Extra restrictions in Orihuela and Elche as hospitality industry hangs by a thread

At

a press conference on Friday the Minister of Health, Ana Barceló, introduced 22 special measures to limit social activities in the four localities of Guadassuar, Orihuela, Onda and Elche, in the fight against Covid 19. The measures came into effect at midnight that same day and will last for the next 14 days. With 152 new cases confirmed by PCR in the last 14 days the cumulative incidence in Orihuela, updated on Friday, was 196.35 per 100,000 inhabitants when the situation is assessed as "worrying" by the Ministry of Health when it reaches 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Among these measures, meetings are limited to a maximum of six people in any group, family or social gathering, both in public and in private, except those people who are already living together. There are also be measures to reduce capacity. For the moment these measures will not affect Orihuela Costa or Torremendo, which belong to the Torrevieja Health Authority.

Some of the measures to be introduced include a maximum of 25 people at outdoor funerals, 15 for indoor events; places of worship are limited to 50% capacity as are theatres and cinemas; Markets are limited to 50% of the usual traders; capacity in shopping centres is limited to 50% and customers will not be allowed to remain in common areas; catering establishments may not exceed 50% of the capacity indoors or on outdoor terraces and they Valencian Hospitals must now close at 11pm with no admittance after have notified the 10pm; gaming and betting establishments will also Ministry that 5.58% close at 11 pm, with no access after 10 pm. of their beds are cur-

Orihuela Councilor for Health, José Galiano, held a press conference to explain that in the last month the city has experienced an "upward trend" in the data that has seen the city go from a privileged situation in the first wave, when it was one of the municipalities in the Valencian Community with the least infections, to have an increasing cumulative incidence.

The Councillor for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde, explained that the measures revolve around capacity restrictions, which will be limited in the hotel industry, social activities and in places of worship. The Councillor for Health produced data showing that, 41% of the outbreaks are in people aged between 15 and 44 years, with just 17% in people over 65 years of age. Almost all are of social origin.

There was no let-up of cases over the weekend with the Valencian Community registering 838 new coronavirus infections confirmed by PCR and antigen tests on Saturday, 364 of which are in the province of Alicante. This was the highest Saturday total since the Generalitat started providing data for this day Between Monday and Friday, 18.5% more cases have been detected than in the same period of the previous week. Despite all this, the Valencian Community continues to have one of the lowest incidences of coronavirus cases in all of Spain. As of October 16, the Community registered 115.09 cases per 100,000 inhabitants reported in the last 14 days (the most reliable period of time to check the evolution of the virus), while the current average in Spain is 280.44.

The vehicle was parked on Calle Río Nacimiento de Campoamor, in Orihuela Costa. Provincial Firefighters took only a matter of minutes to douse the flames but were then required to remain on hand as a blustery wind threatened to blow embers into an adjacent forest.

WHAT NOW for Torrevieja Health Authority’s two new medical centres? Following the formal decision to terminate the contract of Ribera Salud as managers of the Torrevieja Health Authority in October 2021, the major ‘unknown’ is what will happen with the pending investments in the health area.

Barcelo and Dolon

On July 9, the Torrevieja Salud Company presented an investment plan valued at 40 million euros, which included, among other things, the construction of two health centres in Orihuela Costa and Guardamar. That plan was to be applied during the period between 2021 and 2016, in the event that the concessionaire was granted an extension to it’s management, something that for the moment will not happen. But what then happens will happen to those proposed investments? It should now be the case that the Ministry of Health constructs them within their ordinary budgets but is that really likely to happen? Following Tuesday’s announcement of the contract’s termination, Health Minister Ana Barceló met with the PP mayors of the municipalities to be affected, where, as one, they all demanded that the promised investment of 40 million euro still be carried out. The minister said that there is a lot of disparity with that investment plan, although hinting that some of the investments still had to be made during the current concession period; that is, until 2021, but she would not reveal which ones. She said that Health has now commissioned an audit to find out what state the entire health authority adding that, according to the specifications of the current contract, any investments made by the concessionaire must be agreed upon and previously authorised by the Ministry of Health, something that was not done in the case of the two proposed new health centres. The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón said that he has been pointing out since the beginning of the year that the city requires significant investments in health. This was stated to Ximo Puig in January at the meeting they held in Valencia. Dolón called for improvements in health care for the city, mostly for the Hospital, such as new equipment, and the expansion and improvements of the building. But in the city he also urged

a comprehensive reform of the La Loma Health Centre (the oldest in Torrevieja), an expansion of the Acequión health centre (Addictive Behaviour Unit - UCA) and improvements in the rest of the Torrevieja health centres. He also pointed out that Ribera Salud had an investment plan for the coming years budgeted at 20 million euros.

Sáez, has described his meeting with the minister as

In the case of Orihuela, the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, has been demanding for years the construction of a second health centre on the coast. He complained that no response has been received to any of his correspondence sent to the Ministry requesting said facilities. In January, Ribera Salud committed to the construction of the new health centre with an investment of six million euros. In July, Bascuñana, the councillor of Health and representatives of the concessionaire visited the plot that the City Council allocated for the construction of the second health centre. He reiterated that it was not a matter of opportunism. "I have asked the Ministry but still await an answer. The concessionaire has told me that if they retain the management contract, they will build the health centre. I ask the same of the Ministry," he said.

"We will criticise or praise the achievements from 2021 [the year that public management begins]," he pointed out. In terms of investment, he said that the rehabilitation centre, whose expenses in terms of costs are now borne by the council, must be paid by the Ministry

RYANAIR LAST MAN STANDING! By Andrew Atkinson

Eddie Wilson, chief executive of Ryanair DAC

Ryanair - one of the few airlines that is giving a lifeline to ex-pats flying to and from the UK and Spain, via Alicante-Elche airport - say they could be 'the last person standing' after the ongoing COVID-19 crisis has seen passengers severely severed. “I think when this ends we will come back stronger,” said Eddie Wilson, chief executive of Ryanair DAC, speaking on a new podcast, Inside Ryanair. “If you prepare well, and better than your competitors, then you’re going to be in a better position," said Wilson. “We have a strong balance sheet. That allows you to be the last person standing in an apocalyptic scenario," added Wilson. Ryanair owns over 70 per cent of its aircraft, which provided an advantage: "Even when our aircraft are sitting on the ground, we’re not paying expensive leases,” said Wilson. “Most of our competitors – those in long haul for example – could be sitting on the ground still paying lease rates of €1-€1.5m (£910,000£1.4m) a month. “We have been able to deal with our people in flexing their work throughout this winter, on the basis that they can come back full time next summer, rather than going for quick redundancy. “If that makes sense for the people, then it makes sense for us.

travel restrictions. They say that flights and holidays to Malaga and Alicante-Elche airport will be suspended until February 10, 2021.

Quote: 'We may as well all hole up in a cave forever and think this thing (COVID-19) is going to pass. We’re going “Norwegian is gone, easyJet are getting smaller," to have to live with it'. “So, if you’ve got the money, you’ve got the aircraft, you’ve got the people, you’ve got the cost base at the airports, then you are in a much better position than those that are scrambling around, running out of cash, looking for short-term deals all the time, selling their aircraft, firing their people.

said Wilson, on the back of easyJet chief executive Johan Lundgren talking about the coronavirus outbreak.

Ryanair DAC chief executive Wilson also hit out at governments in Dublin and London for adding new travel restrictions. Ireland’s 'Green List', the register of nations from which arrivals to the republic need not quarantine, has this week shrunk to zero. The UK has steadily reduced the number of countries from which travellers can without two Byarrive, Andrew weeks of self-isolation.

"easyJet came into this crisis in a very strong position, thanks to its strong balance sheet and consistent profitability.

“We are closing down the connectivity at the moment and thinking it is going to bounce back. It is not going to bounce back," said Wilson.

"This year will be the first time in its history that easyJet has ever made a full year loss.

“What they risk doing is: 'we will put our aircraft where we can get the best return'.

"I would like to thank everyone at easyJet who has worked tirelessly to manage through this period. I believe that, as a result, and due to our decisive response to the pandemic, we are well positioned for the recovery," said Lundgren.

“People look at vaccines as though it’s going to be a panacea for everything, like it’s going to arrive like an app on your phone.

Jet2 meanwhile has cancelled a number of flights and holidays to Spain and Portugal until early 2021 in the face of ongoing coronavirus

“We may as well all hole up in a cave forever and think this thing is going to pass. “We’re going to have to live with it," said Wilson.

“Everyone wants an instant solution. There isn’t going to be an instant solution.

ALICANTE-ELCHE AIRPORT could be renamed after poet Miguel Hernández

The initiative of provincial cultural groups wants to give more relevance to the poet Miguel Hernández aerodrome losing its name Supporters of the Oriolano poet Miguel Hernández have begun to collect signatures and support across the province so that the AlicanteElche airport bears the name of the writer. The objective, they explain, is to raise the profile of the poet and ensure more recognition that would cross borders, in this case, tourism. The signatures will be presented at the Government Sub-delegation,

where the supporters, including Professor Joan Pamies, will try to open a debate on a social level as the first phase of this project. The initiative proposes maintaining the current name so as not to generate distress by removing the name of the two cities so it would become Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández airport, or similar. "In the United States there are airports named after famous people, so we believe that it is an opportunity to promote the poet and to represent the entire province," according to coordinator Julio Ríos. It is not the first time that the proposal has been made. In 2013 Esquerra Unida suggested it when Aena accepted the proposal of the Elche City Council for the airport enclosure to include the name of the city. However, the proposal at that time was that the poet was the only name to be used, while now what is proposed is to expand it. In the coming days, supporters and cultural groups will launch a proposal in order to be able to collect signatures through WhatsApp, which they hope will have a significant impact on their proposition. The objective is to turn this petition into a public lobby and reach the largest possible number of groups with the aim of highlighting the legacy of the Oriolano poet. The last name change of the airport took place in July 2013. From that date all the signage, both inside the airport and outside, was replaced to include the name of Elche. However to this day, only the acronym ALC continues to appear on tickets and reservations, in reference to Alicante, although the object of that proposal was to gain additional visibility for Elche.

Extra 131,000 euros to repair the historic ROJALES BRIDGE construction management, which is an engineer independent of the City Council, and the Secretariat." They say that it has not yet been approved, but there is going to be an increase. The rehabilitation work of the hydraulic complex, the most significant in the municipality, which is pending inclusion as an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC), is long overdue.

The City Council justifies the increase while the controversial coloured granite used on pavements and pedestrian crossings has turned black a month after being installed The mayor of Rojales, Antonio Pérez, has approved the start of the second modification to the restoration works of the historic, 18th century, hydraulic complex at the Carlos III Bridge. The controversial works, the contract for which was formalised in 2018 and which has seen a change of contractor, will have an extra cost of 131,811 euros of general expenses. With this increase the council now intends to finish the work after almost two years, works that were originally awarded for 659,618 euros, so the increase represents almost 20%, with the final cost now reaching 791,500 euros. The local government justifies this extra cost, which it qualifies due to new needs or unforeseen causes". "The increase is justified, motivated and informed," they say "and is based on reports from municipal engineers, the

The extra cost of the works will be for lighting, automation equipment and urban furniture, such as benches, all of which have still to be installed, although the bridge was reopened to road traffic last August after completing the installation of the new pavement, but that itself was not without controversy due to the colour of the granite material used. However, these "eternal" works have been criticised by the opposition, PADER, which denounces the extra cost of 131,000 euros which it states is for the correction of earlier mistakes. The mayor said that "what PADER intends is that the execution period expires so that the City Council would lose the subsidy of European funds." The mayor refers to the Feder funds from the European Union that will pay for half of the rehabilitation works of this historic hydraulic complex. In the case of the Sillería de Carlos III bridge (built in 1790), it is the oldest in the region as the remaining ones were destroyed by the 1829 earthquake. The City Council decided to open the bridge and its adjoining streets to road and pedestrian traffic at the end of August after almost two years and despite the fact that the works have not yet been completed.

The blind spot

I

have a slight defect. Loath as I am to admit it, I have a blind spot. This blind spot manifests itself in a manner, which might not be all that unusual in men. I can find nothing in the house! ‘A place for everything and everything in its place’ is what I constantly preach. Then I satisfy myself that it isn’t where it should be, before throwing what the sisters might term a little bit of a tantrum. At this stage I hear the dreaded ‘if it had teeth it would bite you’ and lo and behold, the missing item comes into focus at that precise moment. I go to the hot press and all I want is one little jockey underpants. Can’t see one. Cast my eyes up and down shelves … nothing belonging to me there. What a lousy setup! Not even a bloody underpants to be found in a man’s own house. I consider putting back on the worn one, just for spite. Then I see the linen bag; ram one hand in after the other, bringing up nothing but fistfuls of bras … and the other items, Lads. Lose the head and empty all out on the floor. I must have called out at some stage, because, just as I see the layer of nicely folded underpants on the shelf in front of me, Mrs Youcantbeserious arrives on the scene. Bit of humble pie to be eaten … Herself is inside watching ‘Coronation Street’. I take her in a cup of tea and decide to make myself a sandwich. Open fridge. ‘Nothing to make a sandwich with?’ I ask in nice even tone, with just a hint of surprise and disappointment. ‘Well, there is ham, cheese, tomatoes and the carcass of a chicken- is that not enough for you?’ Five minutes later I come in and sit down beside her; cup of tea, on its own, in my hand, hoping she will notice I am sulking! ‘Did you not make the sandwich?’ ‘Nothing to eat in the fridge except a jar of olives that were ‘best before’ 2018, I whimper. The break in Coronation Street arrives and ‘number one’ rises and heads for the kitchen. Then I hear that dreaded icy voice inviting me to ‘come here a minute’. Lads, these are the moments in a marriage that are the bottom half of the “for better or worse” bit. When you see her standing, with the fridge door open, giving you the same look a caterpillar gets, and

pointing at all the things she told you were in the fridge. You resolve to be more careful in future! The fact that anything worth eating was hidden behind the milk and orange juice counts for nothing. I cannot find essentials in the bathroom. As you know, when you need toilet paper- you need toilet paper. How annoying it is to get out of the shower, dry yourself and then no feckin comb. You yell downstairs and nobody pretends to hear you. My hair dries like a furze bush and finally, just as the curses are being responded to, and she is on her way up the stairs, you see the comb in the bathroom, the one on the dressing room table and the one on the bedside locker. ‘My headache wasn’t too bad until I started looking for panadol, anadin or aspro’, I announced pitifully to wife, after she arrived in. Now I am taken gently by the hand and led to the medicine cabinet. She won’t leave it at that- oh no! Every tablet which might cure a headache has to be taken out and lined up on the table for me to have a good look at! I cannot function in the mornings before I have my tea, toast and marmalade Boil the kettle, do the toast – and then the crisis. Don’t believe it … no marmalade AGAIN! I yell word of this catastrophe up the stairs – and don’t even wait for the sleepy reply. Out to car in huff; in to Michael Leonards. ‘Paper and pot of marmalade, please.’ Arrive home, make tea, lavish the toast with marmalade and then put jar in press – beside two other jars of the same! Why, why, would anybody have nothing better to do, than moving someone else’s spectacles? I know where I left my phone – but it’s not there now? My car keys should always be hanging on their hook; the firelighters beside the stove; the phone book beside the phone and I can put my hand on anything I want – because I know, that is where I left it. I am a ‘place for everything and everything in its place’ sort of chappie. Unfortunately there seems to be a saboteur around this house… I am going to relax by the fire now until bedtime and try to rid myself of the stress caused by reliving above. My SLIPPERS, - - Who took my feckin slippers?”!

Three illegal tobacco factories dismantled, one in Albatera The Civil Guard, the National Police and the Tax Agency have dismantled three illegal tobacco factories located in the provinces of Madrid, Murcia and Alicante, which together had a production capacity of about 18,000 cigarettes per minute. The subsequent 38 arrests have now seen the authorities deactivate 23 illegal cigarette factories to date in Spain. The police say they have dismantled a highly specialised organization with a massive logistical capacity that, under the direction of Bulgarians, supplied the national and international black market with up to 14 different brands of counterfeit cigarettes

In raiding the 3 factories hey seized 43,160 kilos of tobacco cuttings and 1,443,000 packs of cigarettes with an estimated value of more than nine million euros. They additionally impounded six vehicles, a tractor unit, two truck-trailers and machinery used to carry out the manufacturing and packaging process. It is suspected that the organization manufactured `Fortuna`, 'Winston', 'L & M` and` Chesterfield`, for the Spanish market, as well as others brands for consumption in other countries across the European Union. By Andrew Atkinson The Santiago de la Ribera Eagle Patrol took to the sky on October 12 in Pilar de la Horadada on the day of their Patron Saint the Holy Virgin of Pilar. "Many thanks to the Pilareña who informed us that if everything went well in Madrid, this beautiful flyby would be carried out by the Eagle Acrobatic Patrol of the Air Force in our town," said a spokesperson from the Ayuntamiento. "On Hispanic day and day of our Patron in Pilar de la Horadada, after the celebration of the National holiday, the Eagle Patrol (Air Force Acrobatic Patrol) based in Santiago de la Ribera, San Javier, Murcia, passed through our town to cross our sky. "Remember, that this gesture of our airmen was not on the agenda and we were hopeful that there was no unforeseen circumstances and we were able to hear the sound of these fighters," said the Ayuntamiento spokesperson.

“Cuéntame habaneras. 2005-2014” published on 60th anniversary of the Contest “Cuéntame Habaneras. 20052014” is the title of a book that was published on Wednesday by the Patronato de Habaneras to mark the 60th anniversary of the International Contest of Habaneras and Polyphony. The book was launched by the town councillor responsible for Habaneras, Antonio Quesada, together with Óscar Albaladejo, the book’s author. Albaladejo has had various contributions, from people such as Antonio Sala, the official chroni-

cler Francisco Sala and José María Andréu Montesinos. The cover was designed by the Oriolano cartoonist Alfonso Ortuño. The book, with a circulation of 1,000 copies, can be had free from the Habaneras Board of Trustees office and at the Torrevieja Town Hall. This work is a continuation of the previous publication "La habanera: history, tradition and roots" which was published on the 50th anniversary.

STUDIO32 Musical Theatre to resume STUDIO32 Musical Theatre company are pleased to announce that they will soon be resuming rehearsals for South Pacific. As with other theatre groups the restrictions placed on us due to the coronavirus have hit us hard. However, there is now light at the end of the tunnel and we are planning to put the show on in March 2021. The company was set up in 2013 with the aim of bringing high quality musical theatre to the area. Why is the group called STUDIO32? Well, the name originates from the rehearsal room used by the company’s first director, Edith Smith, many years ago in the UK. STUDIO32 started with small beginnings but big hopes, and over the years have staged many large scale musicals - “Oklahoma!”, “Fiddler On The Roof”, “Mack and Mabel”, “Chicago” and “Anything Goes” are amongst their big shows. We are very proud of the fact that, to date, we have raised over 35,000€ which has gone to help local Alzheimer support, homeless people, the local music school in San Fulgencio, and more recently the Red Cross for their tremendous work in helping people affected by the floods in Spain last year. All things being equal we should start full rehearsals in January 2021 and we would welcome new members to join our company. So if you have had a yearning to act, sing, dance or help out backstage, why not contact us at info@studiothirtytwo.org . We rehearse at Casa Ventura, San Luis - usually on Wednesdays and Sundays although currently our rehearsals are limited due to COVID restrictions. That said we are positive of a bright future, and look forward to more normality in the new year. For info visit our website www.studiothirtytwo.org

For Bookings and info Mike at info@costa-blanca-greenfees.com quoting reference LEADER or on 966 704 752 or 661 345 931 Mark Western won on the day with 41 points on countback from Trevor. Reg Akehurst and Nigel Price took the next two places both with 39. Well done to Marleen Billen, Terry Field and Liz Robertson on achieving a ‘2’.

Hola! and welcome to Stableford week. Played over three rounds, it would be the player with the highest total at the end of Friday’s game who would win this year’s title.

Friday and it was ‘Judgement Day’. With an outrageous 45 points Mike Mahony took the spoils on the day and, out of nowhere, into the runner’s up spot overall with 112.

Day one and Graham Murray took an early lead with 38 points (just easing out Lindsay Forbes on countback).

His round included a ‘2’ on the par 4 eighth, worth 5 points, but he won nothing as he doesn’t partake in this little side line wager! Marleen Billen took today’s runners up place with 42 points but it was not enough to get her onto the overall leader board.

Three players, Friedel Knebel, Bryan Neal and Petina Murray shared the next three spots each scoring 37 points whilst yours truly got onto the leader board with 36. Collecting a tidy sum Friedel carded the only ‘2’ today.

Following his 41 in round two Trevor Pullyblank posted 40 points to take third place on the day and the overall title with 114. There were two ‘2’s that did count today, one going to Bryan Neal and the other (wait for it)………me! Overall Graham Murray secured the bronze medal with a combined total score of 108.

After Wednesday’s game we saw no less than seven players with a total score of over 70 points. With 74, four players, Graham Murray, Lindsay Forbes, Friedel Knebel and Trevor Pullyblank were sharing the lead.

A very enjoyable week’s competition had by all (well most) and with the Pairs Matchplay just around the corner those that didn’t do quite as well as they would have hoped will have the chance to redeem themselves. Pues hasta la semana que viene

The Orangetree Autumn Shield The Autumn Shield was played at Lo Romero on a blustery autumn morning. The course was set up for the long hitters as the yellow tees were set nearly as far back as the white championship tees. This proved to make the course very long, nearly adding 200 yards to the normal set up. This showed in the scores which proved unusually low for the 16 players who competed on the day. The overall winner who championed over the rest of the field was Peter Curley who came in on the 18th with an overall stableford score of 33 points. The par 3's were also set up with the tees so far back only one out of the four were hit for a closest to the pin. The weather picked up and the wind died down by midday but the course still proved a tricky challenge, but was in tip top condition. Congratulations to Peter, who was presented the shield by the Orangetree captain Stuart Robertson.

SMGS at La Serena. October 14th, 2020 A good turnout for the second golfing day of Mick Roscoe’s captaincy, with 35 members and 4 guests making their way to a course not played for some time. La Serena is a little like Las Ramblas, you either quite like it or hate it (unlike Ramblas where you either love it or say you will never go back - but do!). The 16 holes with water were not enough to deter many from some excellent scoring, with two outstanding returns. Steve Hart’s 42 points just pipped Alan MacDonald’s 41, the latter’s recent stay in the UK clearly having given him time to forget golf and simultaneously improve his game. There are a few of us who maybe could do with adopting the same strategy! Unusually scoring across all three categories was very even, with none of the main prize winners doing worse than 36 points. However, we still had a much contested Abacus. Captain Mick Roscoe was sure he had landed the rather good bottle of Jumilla on offer, but was beaten on countback by first time Abacus winner Anne Reilly. The standout nearest the pin went to Neil Oliver who, on the stroke index one par three, missed a hole in one by no more than a foot. The day’s winners were the following: BRONZE CATEGORY: 3rd Mike Kaylor (36 on CB), 2nd Neil Oliver (36 on CB), and 1st Alan MacDonald with an excellent 41 points. SILVER CATEGORY: 3rd Kyrre Skarsmoen (36 on CB), 2nd Roddy Duncan (36 on CB),

and first, with the day’s best score, Steve Hart with a superb 42 points. GOLD CATEGORY: 3rd Keith Little (37 on CB), 2nd Tony Smale (37 on CB) and 1st Michael Lausch with 38 points. Nearest the pins (sponsored by Mick Roscoe’s Property Shop): Hole 3 Neil Oliver, Hole 9 Yvonne Davies, Hole 15 Dave Rowe, Hole 17 Keith Little. Abacus: Anne Reilly Best Guest Winner: Mike Jeroen Our thanks go to all La Serena staff for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Next week we will be at El Valle. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Mick Roscoe a call on 649 226 955.

Lo Crispin Golf Society at Altorreal On Wednesday 14th. October 31 members and 1 guest played for the Society's 4th. and final 'Major 'of the year, the Nominated Pairs. In this competition players compete in teams of 2 in an 18 hole stableford. In this competition players can choose who to team up with and the best score of each pair at every hole is recorded. The weather was ideal for playing golf and the course

was generally in good condition. What surprised us though and is or should be regarded as not acceptable, is for the course staff to be holatining greens as we were playing them ! We were not warned in advance that this would be happening. Following the game we returned as usual to Lo Crispin Tavern where the friendly and hospitable served us a selection of Tapas. The day's prizewinners were : In 1st. Place and winners of the Nominated Pairs Trophy Pete Childes and Paddy Shea with 39 pts. 2nd Place - Mark Good and

Mike Ellson with 36 pts. 3rd. Place - Brian and Sue Smith with 33 pts. N.T..P. on Par 3s Hole 5 - Sue Smith Hole 8 - Pete Childes Hole 10 - Gordon McGregor Hole 17 - Ronnie Speirs The 2s 'pot' was shared by Ronnie Speirs and Derek Worwick (guest) The Free Game Draw was won by Brian Coultate. Our next game is an individual stableford at Las Ramblas on 28th. October. Steve Harrington (Handicap and Membership Secretary)

Fire Station BW complete league-cup double By Andrew Atkinson Fire Station Black Watch won the division one cup of the Torrevieja pool League cup final in a thrilling nine frame match against Brittania A, gaining a 5-4 victory.

La Marina Golf Society Bonalba Golf Course was the venue for the La Marina Golf Society's game this week, where the members were competing for the Helena and Paolo Trophy. The winner of the Gold Division with 35 points was John Brastock, winning the Silver Division also with 35points was Vic Smith. Therefore, on countback and Winner of the Helena and Paolo Trophy was Vic Smith. The par threes were very tricky this week and we only had one winner, which was Rod Loveday. The two’s pot wasn’t won so there will be a rollover to our next game, which will be at El Plantio. A big thank you to Helena and Paolo owners of the La Marina Sports Club for the day's Sponsorship and the after-game refreshments, they are as always very much appreciated.

Despite Brittania A racing into a 4-1 lead, never say die Fire Station ground out wins to lift the Trophy, to complete a league and cup double. The Torrevieja Team Cup Final, staged at Iglesias Bar, saw Britannia Bar, 'A' Team leading 4-2 up after the singles. Fire Station Black Watch showed great team spirit, coming back to win all three doubles frames to win 5-4. "There were some close games and thanks goes to the Britannia Bar for a well fought final. On Wednesday in the Winter League Vistabella ran away with a 10 – 4 win with 127 shots to 81 against La Siesta 2 with a notable win for Scott Malden and Ann Holland 38 – 7.

La Siesta Blues in Division A Southern League had an away game against San Miguel Bulldogs and found this to be a very difficult game as the home team went well ahead on three rinks, but we managed to gain 2 points for getting draws on the other two thanks to

El Rancho Bowls Club The long awaited league opening matches proved to be played with a rather tricky wind, but we all had good fun even if the results proved to be a little disappointing. But as always we remember that it’s only a game and look forward to our next fixture. Monday found the Raiders entertaining San Luis Vulcans and with several matches close enough to have gone either way. But in the end they won just one rink.

LEAGUE SNIPPETS * Amigos Michelle Lane opened with a 180 in the rearranged Bobcats fixture this week. Peter Ayres ( he of Tin Tin fame ) also recorded a Maxi, unfortunately for him it was in the warm up. Michelle added a MOTM accolade winning all her participating legs. * Gap licensee James Brown was offering free shots to any of the Queens scoring a ton or more. No news to date on how many were downed, but my spy tells me the skirting board resembles a woodworm attack. Apparently James is offering the same " shot for a ton " to El Caps, should they play. Crafty old Brown. * Yet another opening 180, this time from Vycka Bobinas of El Caps, during their Pint Depot visit. ln the same game 6 foot 12 inch Aroldas Klimonis enjoyed 2 x 3 dart combination finishes, pretty hot stuff, but when you consider he's throwing from around 2 foot 6 inches, he has a distinct advantage. Well done to all.

Veteran Graham Todd added a second on D17 in the first single, Jesus Madrid D1 and then Pritchett 100,D20 making it 2-7 in favour of the travelling Beez. An even older veteran (is that possible) Peter Ayres finished his 501 on D14, for victory over Nesbitt, the remaining two matches going Beez way, via Andy Flavell D2 and Suso Madrid D10. The latter just squeezing out the talented Harvey Lane 2x100. MOTM Todd and Jesus Madrid. lt was a first visit to Boris' Bar for the Hub after the home sides venue transfer from Trinity. Some might find the pool table a little too close for comfort when throwing, but otherwise an excellent oche in the upstairs games area.
