Many experts still insist that the only way to prevent a new surge of coronavirus is to entirely avoid gatherings of people from different households. They say that increased social contact during Christmas will likely lead to new outbreaks in January.

Auditors investigate Pilar Aid Grants from 2018 The supervisory body, the Court of Auditors, is examining grants amounting to 132,000 euros that were made to 40 different Associations in 2018 by the Pilar de la Horadada Council.

The spokesman for the current PP council in Pilar de la Horadada, Rufino Lancharro, said that he was not surprised by the findings “because they have left us a pile of things undone, unfinished files, and problems that we are still trying to resolve".

Ice Rink for Torrevieja Port An Andalusian company has installed a large ice skating rink by the Torrevieja port fairgrounds, next to the La Libertad promenades and the Levante dock.

It will begin to operate during the Immaculate Bridge and its activity will continue until after the 3 Kings.

The installation covers an area of around seven hundred square metres.

Although it is a strictly private initiative by the Torrevieja small and medium business association (Apymeco) and the Torrevieja and Comarca Association of Hospitality Companies (AEHTC), it also has municipal support.

2020 UK CAR MANUFACTURING OUTPUT fell -18.2% in October, with 110,179 units leaving factory gates, according to the latest figures issued today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This represented 24,490 fewer cars made than in the same month in 2019 with the impact of coronavirus and fresh lockdowns at home and overseas subduing demand in many key markets.

October’s decline was driven largely by falling exports, particularly to the EU and US, down 19.1% overall and equivalent to a loss of 21,569 vehicles. Shipments to the US fell by -26.0% and to the EU by -25.7%. Major Asian markets fared better, with exports to Japan and China up 57.1% and 9.7% respectively, reflecting less stringent lockdown measures, but this was not enough to offset losses elsewhere. Production for the domestic market also fell, by -13.6% to 18,629 units, with 2,921 fewer cars made for buyers in the UK than a year earlier.

October’s performance rounds off an extremely tough 10 months for UK car makers and suppliers, and production is now down -33.8% since January to 743,003 units – a year on year shortfall of 379,308 units worth some £10.4 billion.1

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “These figures are yet more bad news for an industry battered by Covid, Brexit and, now, the unprecedented challenge of a complete shift to electrified vehicles in under a decade. While the sector has demonstrated its resilience, we need the right conditions to remain competitive both as a manufacturing nation and a progressive market. Yesterday’s Spending Review recognised the need to invest in a green industrial revolution, but this must be at globally competitive levels and equal to the scale of ambition to keep this sector match fit. Above all, we must have a Brexit deal, one with zero tariffs, zero quotas and rules of origin that benefit existing products and the next generation of zero emission cars, as well as a phase in period that allows this transition to be ‘made in Britain’.”

The news comes as the sector eagerly awaits agreement of a UK-EU trade deal and with new figures revealing the incredible cost of trading with WTO tariffs long-term. In the event of ‘no deal’, production losses could cost as much as £55.4 billion over the next five years, and even with a so-called ‘bare-bones’ trade deal agreed, the cost to industry would be some £14.1 billion.2 For the automotive sector, Brexit has always been about damage limitation and, with a mere 35 days left until the end of transition, the sooner new trading terms are agreed and finer details communicated the better.

Normally Guadalest would also have had hordes of people visiting it through the summer but not this year, so a day visit here would give them some support.

There are nine unique museums, a Salt and Pepper shakers museum displaying 20,000 different shakers from around the world. Museum of torture instruments to name just a couple.

You can visit the restored house of the Orduna family which is fascinating as you get an idea how it was to live in ancient times. The exit from the house takes you for a short walk outside behind the old buildings, where again the views are just stunning.

There are many shops selling souvenirs and unusual gifts, giving the chance to purchase a different kind of Christmas gift.

The village is split into two and they join through a 15-foot tunnel in the rocks. It is uphill although not too steep but be aware.

Just here on the right is the white bell tower of Penon de la Alcala which is perched high up on the mountainside.

I do know that it has deeply affected some people here and I feel for all those people that it has caused sadness to.

Another place for a night away or a day trip is Alicante. It doesn’t seem to be having the same problems as Benidorm as it is a city so still many people around, if you want to have the atmosphere of a busier area then Alicante could be for you.

The old town is fascinating to stroll around and imagine how it would have been many years ago to have lived there. There are museums, monuments, and beautiful churches to view amongst the old town.

There are numerous good tapas bars to take lunch either in the back streets or along the beautiful Paseo de la Explanda. There are museums, monuments, and beautiful churches to view amongst the old town.

There are a couple of cafes for coffee and maybe a brandy set amongst centuries old trees. A wondrous setting.

Or wander over to the marina area with its array of small and huge boats sitting bobbing in the water and sit in one of the many cafes and restaurants.

You cannot go to Alicante without visiting the castle set high above the town.

Most places here are functioning, albeit with fewer customers, and most are doing alright in these Covid times.

A visit to Benidorm will show you that we are lucky and that Covid is devastating some areas of tourism, with many places closed and those that are open seeming to shut at 2pm and not reopen for the afternoon. I was told that over half of all restaurants, cafes and bars are now closed.

With borders shut maybe you are thinking that this is not a good time to take a break away, but some might just fancy a change of scenery and a night away, there would be no hussle or bustle of people here. The point is though you would be supporting businesses that are struggling to survive in this hard and difficult time.

Benidorm once a hectic, packed resort which had plenty to offer the hordes that descended on it is now resorted to a few. So if the thought of wandering around the Old Town of Benidorm with bargains to be had in some hotels on the sea front, and a visit to the wonderful restaurant owned by

Lacomba warned that the unrestricted construction in flood plains "has the harmful consequence of hindering the penetration of flood water into the ground while subjecting people and property to the effects of the floods that are an inevitable result".

In the case of Vega Baja, he indicated that something more than a conventional flood defence plan is required. “It is necessary to incorporate new measures that make us more resilient and capable of facing these destructive events with more diverse solutions.”

Killing the Goose but keeping the Cure.

L

ong after the majority of people got too grand to eat goose, it still remained the Christmas bird of choice in our house.

‘Turkey is too dry’ my father would rule and so the greasy goose got his casting vote with no dissenters present. It is sometimes now forgotten as to how popular the goose was in these islands.

In England, in the 1930’s and 1940’s there were massive goose fairs across the country and of course in Ireland, right up until the late 1950’s the goose was second only in popularity to the hen as farmyard fowl. I remember when women (yes, it was woman’s work!) started raising turkeys for the Christmas market, most still kept a few geese for family and local customers.

‘Eaten grass is soon forgotten’ they say, but the eaten goose in our house was never forgotten and I’ll tell you why: goose grease, that’s why! Chunks of goose grease were kept in a 2lb jam-jar in the bottom of the dresser from one year to the next. Needless to add, it smelled like hell, but it became a sort of reassuring stink, because goose grease was a ‘cure’.

It was rubbed in for ‘growing pains’ and all types of bone injuries and bruising. With six boys in our family, the ‘goose jar’ was in big demand – mostly as a result of belts of hurls, falls from trees, bikes and the like. Never mind smelling like a skunk, you rubbed in the goose grease to the affected area and the one sure thing is that it did the job.

I have heard of it being smeared on brown paper and strapped to children’s chests to cure chest ailments. In an age when little was wasted, the wings of the goose were kept and used as a ‘beezam’ to sweep the ashes from around the open hearth.

The old people had a cure for almost everything and whilst many people nowadays might scoff at some of these, I believe that in the balance of nature there is a remedy to counter every fault. Some natural cures have not yet been found and more than that have been lost over the centuries.

The discovery of penicillin in1928 by Alexander Fleming, (by accident), along with constant advances in medical science, has largely eliminated the need to seek old cures.

stance, costing one penny and was used in the water for rinsing clothes – but it cured the sting!

A burn was treated by rubbing a slice of raw potato against it; apparently, the starch neutralises the burn and prevents scarring – the white of the egg was also used. The ‘cure of the thorn’ was always in our house. Thorns in feet and hands were an everyday occurrence.

The cure was made from unsalted butter and had to come from someone ‘with the cure’.

The best tonic for a growing family was young nettles boiled in the Spring and wild garlic was widely sought for a person with a bad chest. There is a plant called ‘Butcher’s Broom’ and this was boiled and eaten in order to dissolve a kidney stone.

Another plant by the name of ‘Plantin’, was boiled as a guaranteed cure for a leg ulcer. When somebody caught a bad flu, the oldest hen in the place was boiled and the soup fed to the patient and this was claimed to restore their strength. For a persistent cough, they made ‘whey’ by boiling butter-milk and then straining away the curds.

What remained resembled dirty green water - to which was added sugar and if trying to drink this tack didn’t kill you, the cough got better!

A snail cured warts – as indeed, so did castor oil. Ear wax is a cure for cold sores. First thing in the morning, you put your finger in your ear and rub the wax on the sore, which will soon disappear.

Somewhat similar was the old cure for sore eyes: ‘Fasting spit’ was applied to the sore eyes, first thing in the morning: A mother would spit on her finger and rub a baby’s eye with it and the sore eyes got better. Honey is one of the oldest cures for sore throat and of course, still popular today.

There was always a variety of cures for an upset tummy. My grandmother would put pepper in warm milk and there must have been merit in this, because I have often seen sufferers look for a glass of peppermint for such ailment.

A piece of clove pushed into a cavity was supposed to ease toothache and cobweb definitely stopped the bleeding from a bad cut or wound. There was nothing sorer than a boil, but a hot bread poultice got rid of the soreness in a couple of days. You could whiten your teeth with soot – believe it or not and cure the hiccups by drinking out of the opposite side of the glass!

After writing all this down for you my hand is aching; don’t know if it’s writer’s cramp or a touch of arthritis: Would any of you happen to know a woman with a goose?

Casa Ventura Christmas Crafts On Monday 7th December there will be a Christmas Craft Fayre to be held at Casa Ventura in San Luis between 11.00 am and 3.00 pm, where the Torrevieja Branch of the RBL will have a stall selling crafts, cakes, chutneys and jams, cards etc., with all proceeds going to the Poppy Appeal.

Thousands of Murcians breach municipal and regional borders A study being carried out by the National Institute of Statistics to analyse mobility in the context of the pandemic, has revealed that thousands of breaches of the municipal and regional borders are taking place in the Region of Murcia and its municipalities, particularly at weekends.

This study reflects that the vast majority of the population is nevertheless complying with the regulations and staying within its municipal boundaries but there are many thousands of other residents who ignore the current decree and regularly breach the confinement.

From the interior to the coast, from the north of the Mar Menor to the south of

the lagoon, from Murcia almost everywhere, from Lorca to Almería, from San Pedro del Pinatar and from San Javier to Pilar de la Horadada. Residents seem to be paying little heed to provincial regulations as they travel over the borders without any real concern.

The Cartagena towns of Cabo de Palos, the municipal stretch of La Manga belonging to Cartagena and the towns south of the Mar Menor greeted about 850 people from other municipalities last Saturday, mainly from San Javier, La Unión and Los Alcazares.

JIMMY Cricket turned back the years reminiscing about being a Blue Coat at Christmas - almost half a century ago.

"As a young Blue Coat in 1972 at Christmas time, at Pontin’s in South Devon - the Camp has long gone - as 'Aunties' so to speak, one of our duties was to take the Campers' children to the local Panto at the Princess Theatre in Torquay," Jimmy told The Leader.

Jimmy, 75, also paid tribute to comedìan, singer, an d TV presenter Des O’Connor f following the death of the late icon in September, aged 88.

“From the moment I saw Des O’Connor playing Buttons in Panto in Belfast over 60 years ago, I knew he was destined for stardom," said Jimmy.

"I was thrilled to have appeared alongside him on his TV chat show in the eighties," said Jimmy.

Jimmy also worked with Freddie 'parrot face' Davies, (featured in The Leader) in Panto at the Princess Theatre in Torquay, who became a Redcoat at Butlins over 60 years ago.

Three years ago a record score of 171 points was set for our ‘Friendly Yellow Peril’. Mike Chapman was a member of that team back then and along with Lindsay Forbes, John Shervell and Joyce McClusky he found himself a winner again, this time with a team score of 154.

Starting with yesterday, Sunday’s game, with a trip to Castellón where they met Villarreal, Elche have a busy December in prospect with six La Liga matches and a Copa del Rey tie programmed to January the 3rd.

They begin the month in 10th place on thirteen points, a tally they share with Athletic Club, Getafe, Eibar and Alavés. It will be interesting to see how things shake out for Almirón's Franjiverdes.

With 150 points myself, Friedel Knebel, AnneMarie Weisheit and John Dobson thought we had done enough to take the spoils but alas it was not to be.

The Stones and Smiths was a match made in heaven.

They came over as strangers and found themselves neighbours who became good friends they took up bowls together and joined the club together and entered the mix rinks as a team, but not this year unfortunately and it seems some sort of injustice to be drawn against each other in the first round draw the Stones were victorious 24 - 6.

Likewise with the other pair Alex and Irene are new to the club and proving very pro active members they were against Don and Jean who are relatively new members and are proving to be a real backbone to both bowling and administration.

However there can only be one winner and Alex and Irene won 21-16.

On Monday saw the ladies singles in play Mo Kidd versus Martha Reynolds and the experience of Mo 25 years bowling and an ex-Spanish international proved just too much for Martha, despite giving a good game lost 21 -9.

Monday night is quiz night and I would like to pose to you all my dilemma of the week, is taking a cribsheet to a game the same as asking Google for the answer.

I know school exams crib sheets were banned but if

The Malaga golfer Azahara Muñoz is asking for help to find her golf clubs, lost on a plane after her travelling to the United States following last weekend’s Andalusia Costa del Sol-Open of Spain, in which she finished sixth.

CHEMIES LOUNGE Glasgow Rangers Supporters Club Poppy Appeal Donation 2020 The supporters gather at The Lounge to watch their favourite team Glasgow Rangers. Earlier in the season Mark and his staff were providing meat pies at half time free of charge.

It was suggested that people partaking of the pies could make a donation the total of which could go towards the 2020 Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Well. I am delighted to report that the pie munchers have done the appeal proud.

The sum of €250 was raised and donated to the Poppy Appeal.

The handover was performed at Chemies Lounge.

Firstly I'd like to thank everyone for supporting Smiling Jacks Golf Society. We had a great turnout of 26 players.

La Finca was in excellent condition with lightning fast greens which gave a few players problems but all had a fantastic day out.

We had some good scoring especially our new golfers.

A mention to Terry J who hit almost every tree on the course, unbelievable.

Nearest the pin in two on the 10th, you were all rubbish, especially me. Nearest the pin on the 6th was Craig singleton. Nearest the pin on the 13th was Gary Myers.

I would like to thank Nick Williams for giving out free golf balls to all our players, they were well needed.

In second place with 30 points was Nick Williams, well done but this month's Smiling Jacks Champion was Mojito Jack with 31 points.

There is a substantial amount of work for the society secretary or handicap secretary.

Many local societies use a platform such as www.societygolfing.co.uk and this has been modified to do the number crunching but the pre-competition work needed to obtain the playing handicap on any given day is still substantial.

I am sure that societies federated to the RFEG (Spanish Golf Federation) will be using this system fully but will the smaller societies operating from local bars be using the system or will they stick with the previous handicap system based on the Congu and EGA methods of calculation?

We will watch this space and provide feedback when known.

ith local darts suspended until at least early January, we at least have the opportunity of watching how the game should be played on Sky or ITV 4.

The most recent offering, "The Ladbrokes Players Championship" once again transmitted from the Ricoh Centre, Coventry.

D16, before whacking in a tasty 160 finish T20, T20, D20 to go 4-6 up.

A further 177, proved insufficient as King completed the eleventh in 11 darts on 81. A 180 and 120 game shot restored MvG's two leg advantage, his opponent refusing to lie down taking two from the next three, to include a maxi. Now 7-7 the Dutch superstar reeled off a 174 and D8, then a 180 and 135 game shot (25, T20, bull) for a 9-7 lead. Two legs required from five ,l couldn't see it going much further, how wrong can you be, King, against the throw achieved a 12 darter on 126, then a 180 and D20 for 9=9.

Now it was basically a best of 3 leg shoot out. A 174 from King was countered by a maxi and D8 from his opponent, the East Anglian replying with During the final van Gerwen constantly irritated Mervyn King with his celebratory fist pumping and trade mark roar

King was visibly irked at MvG's celebratory fist pumping and trade mark roar, during the final, but l'm afraid the days of a gentlemanly nod between opponents after a three figure out or a 10 darter are long gone. Providing it doesn't drift into unprofessional conduct, it's here to stay and part to many of the enjoyment. MvG's advice to King " just concentrate on your own game" doesn't require explanation.

On the point of misconduct the organisers have in place the D.R.A. ( Darts Regulatory Authority ) who have the power to fine, suspend, admonish players for breach of rules / acceptable behaviour etc.

Having previously sat on the DRA l can confirm lt's fairness, with players having the right of appeal.

PDC Unicorn World Youth Championship Prior to the final, Brighton's Joe Davis faced Bradley Brooks, Blackburn, for the best of 11 showdown, winner taking £10,000. Davis won the bull for 1st throw and duly won the first.

The lead was to change four times in the encounter, with little to choose, between both.

Davis hit a 150, converting D16 in the fifth and a 180 D10 in the eighth.

The top 64 players from this years P.D.C.Order of Merit, based on the 23 events played in 2020, vied for the top prize of £100,000.

Brooks a 104 finish in the second, but an important 13 darter in the tenth, making it all square after 10. He continued some decent form closing the 501 on D20 for the trophy. 20 year old Brooks now qualifies for the William Hill Worlds later this month. Davis was compensated with a £5,000 cheque.

More from these two in a year or so.

Making it to the semis were 3 top seeds Peter Wright (no1), Gerwyn Price (2), and Michael van Gerwen (3), Mervyn King (44) taking the fourth spot.

First semi pitched King and Wright in the 1st to 11 best of 21 leg format.

Achieving little in recent times, l was more than surprised, along with a million others, to see the East Anglian, King reeling off the first half a dozen legs without reply.

Thrown in were two 14 darters a 180 and a quite brilliant 174 set up shot.

Wright was uncharacteristically all over the place, finally replying with a 180 and 62 out, adding a 2nd leg in the ninth.

Completing the session, King planted an arrow in D4 for 8-2. The World champion bagged a 180 and D16 in the third session opener, followed by D2 in the second for 8-4, both players missing numerous finishing darts,, Wright seemingly wishing he was back home.

King, recognising his opponent was there for the taking, duly reeled off the next three, for an 11-4 victory. Wright 4x180 and a dodgy 84.1 average, King 3x180, 171 and a 92.45 average.

The second semi was somewhat liveli-

er, Gerwyn Price posting a 180 plus a 104 and 97 out, despite a Michael van Gerwen 180, to lead 3-0. MvG looked a trifle jaded at this point, but managed to reduce the margin to 3-2 at the end of the session.

A 13 dart leg from the World no1 followed, plus two of the next three to take the lead for the 1st time. Setting up an out with a 168 from van Gerwen the advantage appeared to be going his way, until a maximum reply and D10 tied the score at 5 apiece.

The Welshman opened the third session using just 15 darts, then added a further 2 from 3 with 2x180 and 170, MvG closing on D10 for 8-7 to Price at the third break.

Despite a 180 from Price the Dutch master closed the leg on 88, then illustrated his treble switching ability by wacking in a 177, to finish on D8.

An outstanding 13 darts were used in

the next 180,134,131,56, D20 for 3 legs on the trot and only 1 away from victory. This was achieved shortly after as MvG closed on D8 for an 8-11 win and place in the final.

King managed only one leg in the next five on D10 ( plus 180,177 scores ), MvG accumulating 168, 177, 180 and out shots of 72 and 94 and a modest

His achievement earned him £ 52,000, the winner of the event, Phil Taylor, received £ 24,000. ** There were 23 Players events during 2020, 5 in Germany, 18 in the U.K. Most victories? Wright (4wins), Price (4), MvG (3). ** MvG only the 2nd player after Taylor to win a televised tournament more than 5 times.

Thader aim to end Annus Horribilis on a high Y

ear 2020 has been a particularly horrendous one for all of us, but for CD Thader Rojales it has been a double whammy.

Early indications were that on field performances would produce positive results, but then virus related postponements disrupted their rhythm, which unfortunately they have struggled to re-establish.

With only 3 games remaining in this godforsaken year, nine points would be a much-welcomed early Xmas present.

The first of these are on Sun 13th Dec ko 1130am, against Torrellano, then on Weds 16th ko 9pm, Petrelense will be the opponents. Both these matches will be back at the recently resurfaced Moi Gomez Stadium, Rojales.

Although Thader conceded 2 early goals, parity was restored by half time through goals by Lloyd and Linus (pen).

It will be great to be back home, but the club are grateful to Guardamar, Algorfa and Delores football clubs for allowing their training facilities to be used in the interim period. Also, to Benijofar where Preferente matches have been played.

Unfortunately, a 3rd goal by Benferri was enough for them to win the match, despite valiant attempts by Thader to force an equaliser.

Good news in that a maximum of 150 fans will be admitted for these matches, has been announced.

For the ultimate fixture of 2020, Thader must travel to CD Murada on Sat 19th ko tbn.

Then on Sat 28 Nov, Thader travelled to Elche to play Ilicitana. Once again, a fragile defence leaked 3 goals, whilst Quino scored Thader's solitary reply.

The regulations also include a mandatory temperature check on arrival. Supporters will also be told not to excessively sing or shout and to moderate their behaviour - so they do not high-five or hug.

Premier League shareholders’ agreed the regulations are part of a wider plan to show the government that football can safely handle the return of fans.

The hope is some stadiums could have up to 20,000 spectators by the end of the season, especially with a coronavirus vaccine now available.

Premier League executives are hoping that the government will allow them to use pilot matches to increase these numbers in the new year.

Ten Premier League clubs can currently allow 2,000 fans under the tiered system.

The Premier League is understood not to be looking to secure vaccines for its players in the immediate future. However it is looking at ways to support the government’s vaccine plan by enabling football facilities to be used for the inoculation of the public.

Newly promoted Valencia 1st Regional Group 10 CD Montesinos has parted company with manager Jesus Santander in a shock move.

Santander's exit comes on the back of a 3-0 defeat against Orihuela Popular Deportivo and a 3-1 defeat against CF Rafal, that saw the Los Montesinos based injury-hit club drop from top place to fourth in the table.

"CD Montesinos and it's Committee have made the decision to part company with Manager Jesus Santander," said a spokesperson from the club on December 6.

"The Full Monte Supporters Club and it's Committee wish to offer thanks to Jesus Santander and his Management team for all their work and for guiding the club to promotion last season.

"We wish him continued personal and football success in the future," added the spokesperson.

CD Montesinos were promoted from the Valencian 2nd Regional Group 14 last season, after topping the table at the time of the Valencia (FFCV) fixtures postponement in March, amid COVID19 lockdown, returning to the 1st Regional G10 at the first attempt, under Santander.
