ORIHUELA GIVEN 20 DAYS TO AVOID BIN STRIKE he Orihuela government has been given a period of 20 days to meet all of the demands made by its waste disposal operators with regards to problems encountered at both the Polígono Puente Alto industrial estate on the outskirts of Orihuela and at their

T

depot on the Orihuela Costa. At a meeting held last Wednesday attended by 80% of the 140 strong workforce, employees gave a unanimous "yes" to start an indefinite strike at the end of a period of 20 days if the City of Orihuela does not meet with them and, they confirm in writing repairs

and improvements to their unacceptable working conditions as well as the purchase of the new trucks that the council announced months ago. "We are tired of hot air, we want action," said the union spokesmen of CCOO, UGT and CSI-F. Workers have been denouncing the deficiencies suffered at the two depots for several years,

and the deplorable conditions of the facilities in which they are forced to work. In recent months the very same demands have been made personally to the responsible councillor, Dámaso Aparicio, to the head of Human Resources, Rafael Almagro and to the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana. Continued on Page 2

They have each been told of the difficulties that the cleaning workers have to deal with, including vehicles that are in poor condition and continuously break down, the fact that there are more collection routes than the workforce can cope with and vehicles that cannot rest. They have complained about a lack of suitable clothing, as well as safety masks and gloves and that at the point of unloading the vehicles there is a lack of sweepers meaning that operators have to deal with the spills by hand. Special mention is made of the situation in the two depots. In the Polígono Puente Alto in Orihuela, there are no toilets, nor is there water

or electricity. In the case of the Orihuela Costa compound, the workers are confined in two temporary huts, neither of which have electricity. Deposits from the two latrines are disposed of just three meters from the entrance of the depot, so the urine they have to drive through a pool of urine every time they enter or leave the unit. The union representatives have once again demanded an urgent meeting with the mayor "to solve and remedy the problems that we have with our working conditions. We do not ask for money, but labour improvements to which we are entitled as basic human rights." They say that if there is no answer within 20 days, they will request that their operators call an indefinite strike that will not end until they see in writing a solution to their demands.

Arrest warrant issued for sixth person in ‘Love Triangle’ murder TORREVIEJA JUDGE, JUANA LOPEZ HOYOS, has instructed the Guardia Civil to issue a European arrest warrant for a sixth person in connection with the ‘Love Triangle’ murder of Carl Carr, whose body was found in a shallow grave along the AP7 motorway two weeks ago, between Benijófar and Algorfa. The man named in the warrant is identified as Simon, aged 26, an Irishman who returned to his country shortly after being interviewed as a witness during the early stages of the investigation. Simon is also believed to have been a housemate of Dubliner, Mr Carr, at his La Siesta home. He has now been implicated in the death by two witnesses who said that he was seen soaked in bloodstains, as he stood next to the body of the victim, covered with a carpet, in the living room The Civil Guard now considers that he had an active part in the crime leading them to issue the warrant for his arrest in Ireland, for his subsequent extradition to Spain. This would be the sixth arrest for the murder, committed on the morning of September 17. The Civil Guard reported this week that "jealousy" or a "love triangle" led to the brutal beating of Carr with a ‘knuckle-duster’ after he returned with Simon to the La Siesta house, along with three women, following a night of partying. One of the women went home, another went to sleep and the third, 23 year old British model Mily Leonard, had "some kind of sexual relationship" with Carr leading to an argument with Simon. When Simon was ignored he drove to Cabo Roig to find Wayne Walsh after which the pair returned to the house, which is when the fighting is said to have taken place. One woman, who has now been declared a ‘protected witness’, has stated that she was sleeping when she was woken up by loud cries coming from the kitchen.

Terrified by what was happening, she decided to leave the house, sneaking out of the door without being noticed. Once on the street she called a taxi and went home. The taxi driver has since reported that the woman was crying, as though something serious had happened. Information provided by a second ‘protected witness’ said that he called at the La Siesta property at 5am on the morning of the incident. Simon shouted at Wayne not to open the door, however the witness walked into the house to see broken and upturned furniture. Wayne was covered in blood, he said: "Something has happened, Carl is dead." Simon also had bloodstains on his clothing and in the the room there was a body covered by a rug. The protected witness said that he left the house, although Wayne made it clear to him that if he said anything, "he would end up with Carl." He says that he subsequently had a telephone conversation in which Wayne confessed that he had killed Carl because of Mily and that the body had been buried by the two men along with a Spanish friend. It is understood that Wayne Walsh, Mily Leonard and Natalie Edwards are currently being held in custody along with a Spanish man and a fifth woman, another Brit, who have not yet been named. carrying out an inspection of the building it was considered that the joists supporting the structure were badly damaged as a result of which the council was asked to rush the authorisation through. Although surrounded by safety netting the masonry continued to fall, particularly in the recent winds experienced across the area. As such a demolition company was called in on Monday and after they have secured site the building will be finally knocked down in the coming days.

Mercadona to finally abandon plastic bags

people due to the existence of these wells or similar shafts. The mayor has said that those responsible for all wells, shafts or works similar to reservoirs, ponds and boreholes must take appropriate safety measures as soon as possible, to seal, cover, signpost and fence them.

Local Police disrupt Orihuela Plenary Local Police Unions and over 50 supporters stormed into the Orihuela Plenary meeting last Thursday, occupying the seats reserved for members of the public, where they held up banners of protest against the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana (PP), and the Councillor for security Mariola Rocamora, booing other government councillors and applauding the opposition every time they spoke.

Pilar de la Horadada council has justified the purchase of a fire tender stating that, in the event of a fire in the town or surrounding areas, it takes at least 30 minutes for emergency cover to arrive from the Torrevieja Station According to the Councillor for Security, José Tomás Saura, the cost of the new fire truck will be 120,000 euros. It will be operated by Civil Protection volunteers who will thereafter be the first point of call until such time as further assistance can arrive from Torrevieja. The councillor explained that Pilar already had a smaller truck with similar characteristics "but now a larger one is required which will deal with any fire until the firefighters arrive.” He said that during the summer months the municipality does have a fire tender on site from early morning until 9pm at night "but for the rest of the year we need to have our own emergency cover until the firefighters arrive", as the municipality, he added, "has a very extensive municipal area and a large area of ??surrounding forest".

Demolition order rushed through

Such was the disruption caused that the mayor threatened them all with expulsion from the chamber on three separate occasions. Mercadona supermarket has said that it will finally replace all plastic bags in its stores with products made from paper, raffia and other reusable and recyclable bags ensuring a reduction of 3,000 tons of plastic are removed from the packaging in their stores.

The posterscarried slogans such as "the PP does not comply", "Mariola resignation" or "blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah", in reference to the fact that "politicians talk a lot, but do not solve any problems or issues,” despite the many promises that they make.

The replacements will take place between February and April 2019 bringing to an end a process that began in 66 stores located in Valencia, Bizkaia, Barcelona, Cantabria, Illes Balears, Ceuta and Melilla, last year.

The agents eventually left the hall but continued their protest outside with shouts of "Mariola, resign", which could be heard throughout the building.

Customers will now be able to choose to pack their their daily purchases in either of the traditional raffia bag costing 50 cents, a paper bag of 10 cents, or a reusable and recyclable bag which contains between 50% and 70% of recycled plastic, also at a cost of 10 cents. The move sees Mercadona reinforce its commitment to sustainability, a commitment that led it in 2011 to be the first company in its sector to introduce initiatives aimed at reducing the use of single-use plastic bags. The replacement will begin this month in Catalonia, Madrid and Navarra, and will be extended to more than 1,600 stores by the middle of next April. Changes in the Valencian Community will take place during the month of March.

Horadada instructs farmers to seal wells Torrevieja council has rushed through a demolition order after rubble and masonry fell from a four storey building in the centre of the town onto the pavement and road below at the corner of Calle Ramon Galud with Calle Maria Parodi. The property has been in ruin for over ten years but was purchased by a local businessman a little over 12 months ago. On

Following the tragic event that took place in January 13 in Malaga, that claimed the life of the 2-year-old Julen, the mayor, Ignacia Ramos, has raised concerns about the existence of open wells in Pilar de la Horadada. As such he has published instructions on safety measures to be introduced by the owners of wells, soundings, reservoirs, ponds and reservoirs in the area. The purpose is to avoid any danger to

The union representatives of the UGT, SPPLB and CSIF, read a statement in which they said that they have been asking for improvements in working conditions for more than 3 years "but the Human Resources leaders just go round and round in circles without taking any action”. They also complained about the lack of police officers, pointing out that in Orihuela Costa, during holiday periods, there are only two agents to cover an area with more than 100,000 residents and tourists.

How To Trace Your Lost Pension Funds Expats could be missing out on funds for their retirement if they have lost the details of old pension plans. Many people come to us asking about lost pensions. Fortunately, there are several ways we can find them. It’s not always easy to keep track of a pension, especially if you’ve been in more than one scheme or have changed employer throughout your career. Many expats who have worked in the UK before emigrating lose details of what company pensions they have built up because they haven’t told their former employers their overseas address.

Although pension trustees have a duty to keep in touch with members, with an ever mobile workforce it is easy to lose details, or for people to decide it is not worth worrying about. If you think you may have a “Forgotten” pension pot, or indeed a Frozen or Deferred pension, then we may be the people to help you trace this money. We would be happy to discuss your options. MAYOR SPENDS PUBLIC MONEY ON LEADERSHIPPOLL Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, is in trouble again after commissioning a survey with public funds on the effectiveness of his leadership of the Partido Popular. The survey, conducted by the company Sigma Dos, among other questions, asked respondents whether they would give their support to the current alderman if he ran again as the candidate for mayor. The local Spanish press reports that the survey was

carried out over the telephone during December and was paid with money from an allocation that the PP periodically receives from the City of Orihuela. It is therefore considered to be public money, although the municipal group may spend it how they wish. The survey, which many of those consulted consider electoral, was a direct order of Bascuñana at a cost of 6,345.33 euros and, to date, the results have not been released.

The spokesman for the municipal group of the Orihuela PP, Francisco Sáez, said that he had heard of the survey but is not aware of it’s content. He said "I do not want to believe that group money has been used for something about which the councillors have not been consulted, I refuse to believe it because it would be very serious, since such an order with public money must have the agreement of all of us and I have not been consulted.”

Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, is in trouble again.

Commemorating World Cancer Day The Pink ladies and Panthers were at La Zenia Boulevard last Monday 4th February to commemorate World Cancer Day which they did magnificently with the support of the Boulevard management team who provided Tulips for distribution to members of the public. There was also a full days entertainment featuring some of the best entertainers on the coast, once again performing free of charge,

for this very worthwhile cause. They included: Grace Coughlin, Cindy Fitzpatrick, No Limits duo, David John Williams Rod Stewart tribute artist, Tony Jones, Zacuzzi duo, Nigel Burchill Elvis Tribute, Diane Diaz, Alan Scott Neil Diamond tribute, with Sunshine FM supporting the artists and Stevie Spitt presenting the whole day. The Pink Ladies were also promoting the AECC early detection program and booking screening appointments for members of the public as their focus is not only on fund raising but also the importance of early detection, as they know only too well that “Early Detection Saves Lives”.

The group, together with members of the public present, held a minutes silence in honour of those who have survived, are still fighting and of course those who have sadly lost the fight to this heinous disease. There was a total of € 1033,69 raised on the day, ALL of which will once again be donated to the AECC to help fund research in the fight against cancer, and of course to their early detection program. We are so thankful for your support. Maria Wilson

La Nao Victoria to berth in Alicante in March

Agricultural sector appeals to E.U. ASAJA Alicante, together with representatives from the Community’s agricultural sector, travelled to Brussels last week where they called on the European Union to implement a previously agreed protection mechanism that would safeguard the jobs of farmers in the region and slow down or suspend the import of citrus fruits from South Africa

A REPLICA OF THE FIRST SHIP TO SAIL AROUND THE WORLD will be one of the attractions of Alicante’s Puerto de Encuentro 2019 from 28-31 March. Members of the public will be able to visit, and even gain access to the interior of the galleon for free.

Elena Cebrián said that the EU must stop buying Oranges and Lemons from the EU, purchases that are made at the start of local harvests and that, this year alone, resulted in losses of more than 30 million euros in the province which is causing an absolutely ruinous campaign from which not everyone will recover.

The boat will be moored in the race village during the Alicante nautical festival alongside a multitude of other activities held with the aim of offering four days full of fun for everyone who attends.

Following a marathon day of meetings with European commissioners and MEPs Cebrián said that the European Commission has turned its back on us. Both the head of the Agriculture Directorate General, Joao Onofre, and the Trade Commissioner in the European Commission, Cecilia Malmström, were inflexible and rejected that the oranges crisis is due to the agreement with South Africa, and that, in their opinion, there is no reason to request such a clause.

The Race Village will provide a showcase of leisure and activities for all audiences. Sports, workshops, games, concerts, street performances, exhibitions, nautical activities and much more to give life to Alicante Puerto de Encuentro 2019, an event that aims to close the cycle of activities that formed part of the Departure of the Volvo Ocean Race in October 2017.

The Nao Victoria is a replica of the ship which first sailed around the World, enduring the greatest maritime feat of all times. The original Nao Victoria, commanded by Juan Sebastian Elcano, left Seville in 1519 and returned to the same city in 1522, after circumnavigating the globe for the first time in History. This replica was built in Spain in 1991. Previously, a long process of historical research was carried out, directed by Ignacio Fernández Vial, the ship’s designer and builder, to design the shape of the ship and define its characteristics.

Following reports of a missing man by a relative on Sunday the body of a 59 year old male was found in the hamlet of La Murada on Monday. After his abandoned car was found by the side of a local canal, Civil Guard divers found a body submerged below the water near to the treatment plant in the hamlet. Although the corpse did not show signs of violence, a spokesman said that the autopsy will still need to be held in order to determine the cause of death.

THREE MURCIA ANIMAL CHARITIES benefitted last Monday to the tune of €1.500. Cruz Azul in San Javier, APAH in Pilar de la Horadada and Los Infiernos Perrera each received €500 in a presentation at El Valle Golf Resort. The money was raised by El Valle Owners and Visitors as an initiative of the late President, Mr John Slack, ably assisted by the ladies of the "Cat

Committee", by means of a coffee and cake morning, including a bring and buy sale and raffle. The money was originally intended to assist with the problem of feral cats on the resort but, for administrative reasons, it became necessary to involve Murcia Council and the EV Owners voted instead to donate the money to animal charities. The presentation was made by the ladies of the "Cat

Committee" to representatives of the three charities with the EV President, Sr Ernesto Zarco in attendance. Whilst the animals have benefitted this time, the El Valle Golf Society has held an Annual Charity Week every August for some of years, raising tens of thousands of euros for such good causes as Arrixaca Hospital Children’s Ward, Los Samaritanos, DEBRA (Butterfly Children), etc.

Gran Alacant go potty in Agost

The Gran Alacant & La Marina branch of the RBL enjoyed a day trip to Agost. Known as the Pottery Village, Ceramics have been made here for the last two centuries. However our visit was not to one of the still operational potteries, but to the Museo de Cantereria, a museum housed in a former ceramic factory. On our guided tour, we were able to see firsthand an extensive collection of objects for daily use, from the earliest to the present-day. We learned of the process of making the pottery, and lived the experience of entering an “Arab Kiln”. We saw the potters wheels and the enormous outside basins which were used for the decantation of clay. Our thanks go to the Museum guide Jesus, for an excellent informative presentation which to the eternal gratitude of our members, was in English. After the tour, we moved on to a local restaurant, where we were royally wined and dined. The Gran Alacant branch of the Royal British Legion meets on the first Monday of the month, 6pm at in Lounge D, Plaza Mayor, Gran Alacant. CHINESE PARADISE

www.theleader.info

Alicante Province could prove to be a paradise for the Chinese Dragon in the year of the pig.

At the start of 4717, another Chinese New Year, as they celebrate the year of the pig, Alicante’s Chinese community, the fourth largest in the country, is increasingly integrating itself into the province, where they continue to invest in business and in property.

we will see them on the internet and on television,” explained the students, who said they were very comfortable in Alicante, particularly enjoying the mild winter weather and the local Beaches. "As I do not know how to swim, I would like to learn, but at the moment I just sunbathe," says Úrsula.

The sea, seafood and pleasant temperatures are what most attract the Chinese community, over 10,000 now resident, according to the National Institute of Statistics. The Chinese colony, the fourth largest in the country after Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia, is increasingly integrating itself into the local society: the second generation of Chinese students are now at university and are gradually moving out of the bazaars and the Chinese restaurants that brought their parents into the area, and into offices and real estate. “There are also Chinese wine entrepreneurs and engineers who work mostly in Alicante and Elche,” said Lili Pan, a spokesperson for the Intercultural Association, and organiser of the Dragon’s Parade that took place in Elche town centre on Saturday. “The Chinese live very well in the Province, they keep themselves to themselves, although they are now beginning to integrate rather more.” Previously Chinese emigrants preferred to go to the United States, England, Australia and to Canada but they are now beginning to appreciate that Spain is also a good country in which to live and work, especially around Alicante where many are now buying homes.

15

Those who have recently arrived in the area, many attracted by family members already living in Spain, are shocked that money is still in regular use, while in China everything is paid for by mobile phone, from food in the supermarket to the train and the taxi. At the University of Alicante, there are 21 Chinese exchange students aged between 20 and 22, who are studying Spanish. Among them

are Wang Yue, "Ursula" and Liu Enshuo, aka "Saints", from the Canton region, while Wang Quingqing, "Lilia" and Chen Jianying, and are from Sichuan province. This is also the first time they spend the New Year outside their country and on the eve of the celebration they met with more friends from China in a restaurant where they all celebrated. “We miss the celebrations back home, although

However the students were also able to celebrate alongside their country folk with a unique parade throughout Elche town centre, that served far more than simply welcoming in the New Year of the Asian giant. The parade brought the culture and celebration of the eastern country closer to the people of Elche, intensifying their presence in the town. Defying the winds, and after four months of preparation, the Asian community celebrated through the streets of the city centre, following two colourful dragons, fifteen metres long, beating their drums as they paraded for more than 2 hours in their traditional costumes. The parade involved a dozen of the 56 Chinese ethnic groups from all over the country as Asians from all over the Alicante area joined in wearing red scarves. According to the Chinese calendar the year 4717, which is the Year of the pig, is last animal that completes the series of twelve of the Chinese zodiac. It is associated with the planet Saturn, and is attributed to prosperity, desire, strength and fertility. And it’s the year that could prove to be a paradise for the community in the Alicante Province.

HELP ing the Emerald Isle to stay healthy Visitors and staff at the Emerald Isle restaurant can have greater peace of mind in future thanks to the donation of a defibrillator provided by the charity Help at Home Costa Blanca. The 1,200 euro machine was handed to the restaurant’s general manager Gerald Moran by charity president Carmen Perez at a volunteers’ meeting. The restaurant complex plays host to bowls clubs and numerous charity and social events and many hundreds of people go there every week. Three members of the bowls club and five bar staff members will be trained to use the life-saving machine so that vital first hand can be given within seconds to anyone suffering a heart problem. The charity has spent more than 10,000 euros to provide defibrillators in Orihuela Costa police cars and an ambulance.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE 2018/19

Monday is the Discovery Division and the Falcons were at home to Greenlands Sycamores. After a cold start both the weather and the Falcons started to heat up. Apart from one rink the match was very close indeed, with the lead going back and forth a few times. It was anyone’s win. In some rinks it was all down to the last end. In the end the Falcons managed a win on 2 rinks with a draw on another. Winning rinks were: Mark Jukes, Roy Thomson and John Bailey 17 – 15, Wayne Jackson, Les Davies and Mick Kirby 20 – 17 The draw rink was: Margaret Odell, Ron Odell and Bryan Eatough 19 -19. Final result was 79-93, giving the overall shots to Greenlands. Pts for Horadada was 5 and 7 to Greenlands. Very well played. Maybe next week we’ll get that winning result. Friday was the turn of the Horadada Royals to show what they can do at home to the Montemar Toreadors. The sun shone brightly and it was a beautiful warm day for bowling. Unfortunately the result didn’t quite go our way. We were beaten by a better team on the day. With that said we did have 2 winning rinks who finished with quite a good shot difference: Judith Simpson, Alan Miller and Terry Hucknall 35 – 19 John Goddard, Ken Baber and Barry Evans 20 – 10 Very well played to those team members who got us the 4 points. The final shot result actually finished quite close with Horadada getting 95 to Montemar’s 101 giving them 8 points. Keep ‘em bowls a rollin’ Horadada. There’s a few matches left yet to do some damage. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment. Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings. Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659 139 129 for more information.

In the afternoon the Palominos were also at La Siesta playing the Sputniks and put in a good effort coming away with one rink and drawing another. The Mustangs took 3 rinks and battled hard in the other two close run rinks and taking the overall shots by a comfortable 114 to

COUNTRY BOWLS BY JO RICHARDSON The home game against Greenland’s Chestnuts on Monday gave the Flamingos another valuable 10 points. Almost a complete ‘roasting’ which leaves the Flamingos handily placed in second position, albeit with the next two games being away against their nearest rivals. Well done to the following: John Jukes, Derek Jiggins & Geoff Paylor. 18 – 11 Pat Patton, Brian Patton & Dennis Birkett 32 – 18 Sylvia Rennie, Graham Richardson & Jim Rennie. 25 – 10 Lynne Bryce, Pat Ray & Brian Ray. 18 – 16 Pat Emmett, Ray Emmett & Gordon Dixon 20 – 22 On Friday saw the Geckos welcoming El Rancho Broncos for an important match as only one point separated these two teams. The Geckos have been improving each week as the team become more accustomed to the consistency that is required for success in the second division. On Friday morning they excelled. Every rink determined to win and focused on doing just that. The Broncos played well but the Geckos were an unstoppable force and stormed into the lead on every rink. On one rink El Rancho came back strongly and it was nip and tuck for the last few ends, going into

Changes to the rules of golf for 2019 I have recently written two articles of interest in respect of the R&A rules changes for 2019 which were well received by the local golfing population here on the Costa Blanca as the golf authorities had done little by way of information distribution themselves expecting golfers to obatin this years rule book and trawl throught it for such information. I was contactd by an expert on these rule changes called Richard Palmer, to remind golfers of all abilities that for the correct information they should only rely on the information which can be found at www.randa.com and sited the following two examples of where slight wording and interpretation errors may result in problems for golfers: Example 1 - “drop a ball for 2 shot penalty when out of bounds rather then play three from the tee” For clarity this is only applicable if the committee adopts the recommended LOCAL RULE but this will certainly not be implemented in any competition play. Example 2 - “distance for free and penalty drops remain the same but can be measured with any club in the bag except the putter”

THE PLAZA GOLF SOCIETY convened at our home course Villamartin in ideal conditions with 43 players. One in particular didn't take advantage of the conditions and heading off to practice was Colin Fearnley having scored a lowly 15pts.....better luck next time Colin! The 2's pot threw up multiple successes so in no particular order the 8 winners were, Russell Bailey, Chris Baker, Christian Attwood, James Freeman, Ian Bishop, Kevin Lance, Russell Bond and Brian Fenty. Best lady on the day was the very consistent Liz Sully who off her newly revised handicap of 12 still achieved a creditable 30 pts.

In 2018 Dechambeau took three PGA Tour titles in four months, winning the Northern Trust, Dell Technologies Championship and Shriners Hospitals Open. However, he reckons it will take another five years to reach his full potential. His 66 on the Friday in Dubai worried him: “I just didn’t have the right proprioception over shots.” (Proprioception, as we all know, is your awareness of the position and movement of your body) “It’s a lot of hard work with my caddie trying to take account of all the variables: air pressure, firmness values, mph on the speed, putts and ball speed, and spin rates.” Good grief! You wouldn’t want to be the Mad Scientist’s caddie, even for the $100,000 tip.

THE NOISIEST HOLE IN GOLF, the 16th at TPC Scottsdale. The suites and boxes sell out for up to $110,000. The Waste Management Open, formerly the Phoenix Open, is a main fundraising event and Thunderbirds Charities, started in 1932, have raised over $100 million for local causes and distressed people in Arizona. After Rickie Fowler struggled round the soggy course from bunker to lake before finally taking the trophy the most distressed people looked like the players. American golfers really don’t like being rained on. IN 1993 A YOUNG GOLFER gave a clinic in front of a devoted crowd at Jackson Park, a municipal course on Chicago’s South Side where he learned the game. 25 years later, Tiger Woods is back at Jackson Park, and looking to leave his mark. Woods, who won his 80th PGA Tour title at the season-ending Tour Championship, giving him his first victory in over 5 years, is leading the proposed renovation of 18-hole Jackson Park and nine-hole South Shore, two municipal courses at the western edge of Lake Michigan, with views of the Chicago skyline. Under the plans laid out by TGR Design (Woods’s design firm) the two courses will incorporate a 7,341-yard 18-hole championship course and a shorter family course, and include teaching facilities for youngsters. Just one problem, they may have to put a roof on it. Chicago was under 3 feet of snow last week. BRYSON DECHAMBEAU WON his first European Tour title with an 8-under 64 victory at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. England's Matt Wallace finished second with back-to-back birdies. Dechambeau mixed 7 birdies and an eagle to post the lowest 72hole total in the tournament's history, finishing at 24 under.

THE MYGOLFSPY REVIEW of Callaway’s new Apex irons says they have clean, stylish looks while still offering a bit of help and forgiveness. “The regular Apex 19 iron is easy to hit but has a lovely forged, blade-like feel at impact.” Callaway say both Apex models are players distance irons with premium craftsmanship. The soft feel comes from a mild carbon steel body while the ‘urethane microsphere technology’ incorporates more than one million tiny air pockets that absorb unwanted vibration. The Callaway 360 Face Cup design promotes high ball speeds across the face, while the tungsten-infused, multi-material construction allows precise location of the CG position in each iron. Better players (the ones who worry about propriowhatsit) might want to fork out for the Pro model. WORLD NUMBER ONE Justin Rose (38) held off the challenge of Australia’s Adam Scott to win the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines by two shots, with his new Honma equipment. With three bogeys in his opening five holes he recovered to card a threeunder 69 and win on 21 under. Spain’s Jon Rahm, charging up the fairways like an Andalusian bull, fell away to finish in 5th place. "I haven't won a January tournament for a long time, so this feels great," said Justin. All right for him. Some of us would just like to win something, never mind what month it’s in. Our Guest category contained 2 professional golfers who didn't disappoint, both willingly shared their experience and talent with our members which is great to see. Pearse McMurrey from Vistabella playing off scratch came 3rd scoring 31 pts, 2nd was Kevin Lance handicap 7 with 33 pts but 1st was our visiting Pro from Retford GC James Freeman, who shot a gross 65 playing off plus 4 resulting in an fantastic 39 pts, and the top score of the day. Onto our own categories and Silver saw Brian Fenty 3rd with 30pts off 24, the irrepressible Tony Food 2nd with 31 pts off 17 and leading the way was Russell Bond with an excellent 36 pts off 19. Gold saw some regular podium winners with 3 players all recording 34 pts so it all went to countback. Gareth Davies 3rd off 10, Russell Bailey 2nd off 11 but pipping both of these was course specialist Paul Thelwell off 13.....well done to them. ‘Letters from the Canary Islands’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.

He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

THE SOCIAL LAUNDRY Commercial laundries are big business in the Canarian village where I live. There are several that operate seven days a week with their main business being from the hotels in the south of the island, which provide important work for local residents. After all, who do you think washes and irons those blistering white sheets on the beds of all those hotels? It is unlikely to be the hotel staff, and convoys of

21

b y Bar rie Mahoney

large vans trundle from the hotels in the south of the island to our village every day of the year. Walking past the entrances to these laundries, I am greeted with the heady heat and smell of freshly laundered sheets. I keep well away from the areas where used sheets and other bedding arrive for processing! Do you remember the days when laundrettes were a feature of most high streets, or at least within easy access of the town centre? Most seem to have disappeared in recent years, or turned into dry clean only businesses. I have not seen a launderette for many years. For students and those who could not afford an expensive washing machine of their own, laundrettes were a life safer. In the days before a plethora of coffee and betting shops took over the high street, launderettes provided a valuable social experience, as well as somewhere to warm up on a cold day and to meet and chat with other people. Times have moved on, and washing machines are no longer the major, expensive purchase that they once were, and prices for a good, basic model seem to fall each year, and especially during the winter sales. Even so, there are still many The first Social people who have neither the cash, or indeed Laundry opens a home in which to install one.

in Las Palmas

Even for those that live in towns that are fortunate enough to have their own local launderette, this does not answer the problem for those who cannot afford to use them. It is with this problem in mind that the City Council in Las Palmas in Gran Canaria came up with the imaginative idea of a social laundry, which is said to be the first of its kind in Spain. Social laundries already operate in a number of countries. They are created out of necessity and reflect an awareness that society must do whatever it can to help those in need. The homeless, the disabled and those in great financial need, as well as

older people who have nobody to wash their linen and clothes, all benefit from such a service. In Las Palmas, twenty vulnerable families in the city can now use the laundry service to wash and dry their clothes twice a week in large industrial washing machines and driers, completely free of charge. Whilst the scheme is currently a pilot project, the City Council hopes to extend the scheme across the entire city. It is imaginative schemes, such as the one in Las Palmas, that helps to provide a welcome and necessary respite for those in need. I hope that this initiative spreads rapidly and that we see far more social laundries for those that need support. Patti’s Pirates v Patti’s Panthers The long-awaited match between local rivals was a most enjoyable evening with low scores but much banter. The Triples started with a win for the Panthers with Richard Hunt hitting D16, The Pirates came back to win the next with Jeff Ward hitting D2. However, due to a late comer Panthers played with two. The third treble went to Pirates Paul Chick hitting D4. Michelle Lane hitting 118 for Panthers. The doubles all went to Pirates. The first finished by Yvonne Rouffignac D1, the second finished by Jeff Ward D2 and the third by Sid Cross D1. The singles were evenly shared with Harvey Lane D18 beating Ray Hayes (100) in the best encounter of the evening. Yvonne stepped in with a D9, and then Sid Cross with 100 X 2 and D18 for the Pirates. John Lane D7 put in another point for the Panthers and Richard Hunt added another with D20. The evening finished with Pirates Mike Newberry, who entertained us all during the evening hitting with D4. Junction Jaguars v The Ale House Well what can we say, the ladies narrowly missed out to the chaps in our final match of the first half of the season having beaten them this time last year. We took the first triples, Sim’s S19-D4, but then lost the next 4 games on the trot. Both sides were a bit lack lustre apart from a glimmer from Andre Wing with a 140. Luscious Lisa’s 131 and Lithesome Liz’s 100, D1 stopped the rot by nabbing one back against the Caledonian duo of Wee Jimmy Gray (100) and Alan Havelock (140) taking us to 2-4 at the halfway stage. The lads then took the first 3 singles courtesy of Jordan (D8), Alan S15-S15-D18, Andre D6. A poorly Patty Poo (100, 122) so very nearly toppled Alan but you cannae argae with a 3-dart check-oot. Simone was gifted her singles courtesy of an inebriated opponent who shall remain anonymous but who required the support of the wall on every return from the dart board! Then our Wendy fought hard and strong against young Ben Lane and deservedly won with a D1. Wee Jimmy G jigged home with the final leg on D10 against a valiant effort from our Lelly Bear Eagles. Whilst MOTM was awarded to Sim, it should have gone to Denise Green for her spectacular boots! MOTM: Junction Jaguars - Simone De Lacy, The Ale House – Andre Wing,

In the doubles Tony D15, James D6 and Mike D20 took all 3 points in their games. Queen Ali hit 94 and then both James and Phil hit 100. Queen Debbie played well against Phil but his 121 brought his score right down and he took the first singles point. Queen Maggie hit a great 101 and was in front throughout her game, but Tony stole the point from her. Both Queens Marie and Vi were matching their opponents scores but were again pipped to the post. It was the last singles match of the night when Joe Cuyt lost to Queen Rachel that gave the Queens reason to scream and shout and chant in excitement ..... NO whitewash! Pretty much every game came down to the double and the Queens were just unlucky that James´s team hit the double before them on the first 11 games. MOTM: Chemies Loungers - Mike, Pint Depot Queens – Rachel

Peta’s Bar v Hub Hellraisers All 3 trebles went to Peta’s Bar, Paul 100, Viv 100 D1, Sonya D2, Charles 100, 83 and a magnificent 78 checkout D20. Hellraiser Lesley 92. Hellraisers were full of surprises and took the first 2 doubles, Jan on a fabulous checkout 65 D7, Cheryl D1, against Charles 60 and Jim 96. Peta’s Jane and Paul D1 took the last double. Is time now up for Torry? side Hapoel Jerusalem), were hoping to make their debuts at Benidorm.

CD Torrevieja ......................1 TORRY started this hugely important relegation battle against Benidorm, some 2 points and 2 places behind their hosts. As the bottom 3 go down from the Preferente division, this 6 pointer was massive in their cause to avoid a second relegation in 3 seasons, as they lay 2nd to bottom. Since the start of the month, Torry have signed 3 experienced midfielders, who will hopefully be of great assistance to the numerous youth team players that have been drafted into the squad. Brazilian Thales has arrived from his home town club Batatais FC. Thales made his debut last week in the home defeat to UD Ilicitana. Rafa arrives from Intercity Alicante ´B´, and along with Argentinian Suarez (signed from Israeli

This meant that not only did the players have to frantically arrange vans and cars to convey players and management to Benidorm, but yours truly (plus 2 other hardy Torry fans) were left stranded at Nelson Mandela stadium. Benidorm took the lead inside Guillermo Amor Stadium on 15 mins through Borita, which is the way the game remained till half time. Fran doubled the hosts advantage on the hour mark, before Felipe scored for Torry from the penalty spot on 65 mins, to reduce the arrears. Borita notched his brace only 3 mins later, then in time added on, Jaume made it 4-1 to rub salt into Torry´s wounds. This defeat now leaves Torry 5 points from safety, with nothing but a win against Orihuela´s second string team next Sunday at Nelson Mandela stadium, an absolute must if they are to avoid being swept adrift in the relegation dog

Meanwhile the Torry Army has called an EGM which will be held at the Casa Ventura on the 6th March 2019 starting at 7.30.

After such loyal service to the Torry Army the very least that Pat deserves is a good turnout at the EGM and the knowledge that she will be able to hand the mantle over to a replacement volunteer

Work has got underway at the Los Montesinos Municipal stadium last week as part of a 100k investment by the Town Hall. Workmen commenced cutting up the astro turf on the football pitch - 14 years after being laid in 2005 - with a new surface to be put in place by the end of the month. CD Montesinos, who play in the Valencia 1st Regional Group 8, are amongst the sporting groups that will benefit from the investment. "We had a new stand constructed in 2017 and now we are to have a new playing surface which has only been possible with the full support of the Town Council," said a delighted CD Montesinos supporters club president Eddie Cagigao. "They have found the money and willingness to support us and we thank the mayor José Manuel Butron and his team," said Eddie.

San Miguel eye promotion chasing pack - as Monte hit five to ease relegation fears By Andrew Atkinson Photo: Terry Harris

Middlesbrough, Maradona, Montesinos with Timmy in the driving seat Andrew Atkinson talks exclusively to Timmy Leech the former Middlesbrough FC team coach driver who lives in Los Montesinos, Alicante.

The race for promotion - and fight against relegation - in the Valencia 1st Regional Group 8 continued apace with a flurry of goals on Saturday. Racing San Miguel top the table going into Sunday's game against CD Murada - but they are looking over their shoulders at the chasing pack. Santa Pola, Torrellano, Murada, and Hondon Nieves are all on 39 points, tailing San Miguel on 46 points. Hondon Nieves suffered a heavy 5-1 home defeat against Santa Pola to dampen their promotion chase credentials, with Santa Pola CF defeating Callosa Deportivo B 3-1 to boost their promotion hopes. Betis Florida defeated CD Altet 2-0 to ease relegation worries, with CD Montesinos hitting five against San Fulgencio, in a 5-1 goal rout. Montesinos switched their fixture to play at San Miguel stadium in the wake of having a new pitch installed at the Municipal stadium in Los Montesinos. The victory brought relief to relegation fears amongst some supporters - after a woeful run of results - with Montesinos climbing to tenth place, in what remains tight at the bottom. Montesinos' goals from Daniel (2), Vazquinho, Morante and Alex, saw them jump four places in the table, with a game against Monforte CF away next up on February 17.

John Neal was manager at Middlesbrough when I became the first team coach driver in the seventies. John later left the club and joined Chelsea. He was at 'Boro during 1977-81, succeeding Jack Charlton as manager, moving to Chelsea in 1981, when replacing Sir Geoff Hurst. John retired in the 1984-85 season, and was appointed to the Chelsea Board of Directors in 1985. Before he arrived at the club he was at Wrexham, where he took the club into the European Cup Winners Cup in 1972 and 1976. He was a great man who was sadly missed when he left. John died in 2014, aged 82. Ultimately John's departure at 'Boro also lead to my departure soon after. During my time at Middlesbrough I went on to pick up the away teams for three years at the Teesside airport - including Arsenal. And I was lucky enough to pick up Boca Juniors - with then the young Maradona in the team. Argentina international star Maradona was at Boca Juniors during 1981-82, and went on to play for Barcelona and Sevilla. At Boro I began as team coach driver with the youth team - who had players in the calibre of Stan Cummins, David Hodgson and Mark Proctor, who all went on to bigger things. Stan played for Sunderland and Crystal Palace after his time at 'Boro during 1975-79. David, at 'Boro during 1972-82, went on to play at

Liverpool and Sunderland, and Mark played at Nottingham Forest and Sunderland, after his spell at 'Boro during 197881. We had a team which for me was the best youth side 'Boro ever had. My time with the 'Boro senior side was for approximately two years - and I remain close friends with Jim Platt and Billy Ashcroft today. Jim, at the club during 197182, was capped by Northern Timmy Leech - Monte fan. Ireland 23 times. Billy was at the club during 1977-82. Protocol at the club was what went on 'stayed in house' - that's how it was. Tony McAndrew was one joker in the pack when travelling to away games. I recall one joke that was played on me was in Wales. John Mahoney sent me out to check over the pubs during pre season. All the pubs were closed - which he knew - as it was Sunday. I took some 'jib' when I got back - I can remember that as if it happened yesterday! I'm still a big football fan and enjoy watching CD Montesinos play in the Valencia league.
