RED CARPET FOR LOCAL STUDENT

One young lady from Playa Flamenca achieved her dream assignment recently when she found herself on the BAFTA ‘Red Carpet’ and surrounded by stars at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. Lucy Nicole Rogers was there with three other students to cover the awards as part of her BTEC Extended Diploma course in photography Huntingdon College Cambridgeshire. The trip was arranged by College tutor Mark WoodsNunn.

Prior to moving back to the UK to study photography in September Lucy has lived on the Orihuela Costa since the age of 4. She graduated in 2014 from IES Playa Flamenca School with a High School Certificate qualification after which she was accepted into Huntingdon College. After her brief taste of life as a member of the paparazzi Lucy, who is considering press photography as a possible career, said that as the stars arrived it was an absolutely unbelievable adrenaline rush. Continued From Page One She had to work hard amongst a thousand or so other photographers to stand her ground but she knew that she had a job to do, and that was to get great photos. She said that she was particularly pleased with the shots she got of Eddie Redmayne who went on to win the BAFTA and an OSCAR at the 87th Academy Awards in LA last week. "Most of the celebrities were really lovely, especially Dianna Agron, Eddie Redmayne, Jack O'Connell, Tom Hiddleston and Rosamund Pike. They all took their time trying to interact with the fans as they walked past. When Keira Knightley appeared on the carpet everyone was particularly respectful toward her." Eddie Redmayne said that he will be visiting his old University at Cambridge on his return to the UK when he will show off his OSCAR and as such Lucy has sent him her photographs and is hoping she gets the opportunity to meet him in person in Cambridge. Turtor Mr Woods-Nunn said: "Attending such a real life event was invaluable as it gives learners the opportunity to experience the life of a photog-

Monday, 2nd March, 2015 rapher which often requires a great deal of standing around in the cold, concentrating on the subject and not letting others distract you.” "As a result of their doggedness they achieved some great work, particularly as this was their first time at such an event. The whole event went very well, and was a good experience for all concerned. They are a great bunch of students.” Lucy’s brother, 16 year old Aaron, is also studying at the IES Playa Flamenca School. He lives with mother Dawn at La Zenia Beach and is well known in local football circles as the skipper of CDM Cadets. In contact with the Leader, Lucy said that she would like to thank her Art Teacher Consuelo and Tutor Lola at the Playa Flamenca School for all their hard work in putting her on the road to success. She said that the excellent Spanish Education System has provided her with a great platform which she hopes to build on in her future years. Front page image courtesy of Mark Woods-Nunn. ORIHUELA NOW HAS TWICE AS MANY RESIDENT BRITS AS TORREVIEJA Figures Released by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística confirm that Torrevieja will lose it’s ‘big city status’.

The final end of year population figures have now been released by the Spanish statistical institute, the Instituto Nacional de Estadística, which confirms Torrevieja´s worst fear of having lost its big city status, whilst also confirming that nearly double the number of former United Kingdom residents now live in Orihuela than Torrevieja. At the end of 2014, there were officially 91,415 residents registered on the padrón in Torrevieja, of which 46,089 are men and 45,326 are women. The total figure at the end of 2013 was 105,205 residents, which had shown an increase from the 103,720 in 2012. In the case of Orihuela, the end of 2014 total figure was 83,417, of which 41,747 are men and the remaining 41,670 are women. In 2013, the total figure was 91,260, slightly up from the 90,087 at the end of 2012. Both municipalities have suffered a decrease as part of the recent clean up of the data carried out by the institution, who feared that many foreign residents had moved back to their home country, without updating their status in Spain. The result of the imbalance of figures is that the central government was giving more money to those municipalities than they were due, on account of the difference. The problem for Torrevieja is that the municipality now falls below the threshold it had held for some years, and will not only lose funding from government, the per capita amount also decreases. Statistically, both Torrevieja and Orihuela are now on a par, with Torrevieja having to lose council seats to balance out their new found status of equality.

In terms of the population in the Torrevieja, the balance of foreigners has also now decreased, with their now being more Spanish nationals living in the municipality than immigrants. Of the total population, 49,981 are Spanish, whereas 41,434 are foreigners. Those residents from the UK still make up the largest portion, with 7,338 registered residents, with Russia in second place with 4,771. Next in line are the African country groups, with 4,494 residents, followed by the Americas. Rumanians, Bulgarians and Ukrainians are all of similar standing, just ahead of Germany with 1,938 registered residents. As for Orihuela, there are a total of 52,389 Spaniards and 31,028 registered foreigners, of which 13,991 are from the UK, around double the population of Torrevieja, The African nations and Americas are next in line, with just 1,138 Russians, and a similar number of Rumanians and Bulgarians. The German population is almost equal to Torrevieja, with 1,869 living in Orihuela. In overall terms of percentages represented, in Torrevieja the population is made up of 73.89% from Europe, 10.85% from Africa, 9.85% from the Americas, and 5.39% from Asia. In Orihuela, the figure is 83.22% European, 7.69% African, 6.56% from the Americas, and 2.53% from Asia.

LEARNING ENGLISH THROUGH FILM The town hall of Alicante has launched a new initiative to assist English language learners in their quest for better dialogue, by showing feature films in their original voiced language, and offering a debate afterwards. On Tuesday the 3rd of March, the film “The Book Thief” is being shown at the Salón de Actos del Centro 14, telling the story of a courageous and brave young girl named Liesel, who transforms the lives of all the people around her when she is sent to live with a host family in Germany during World War II. For Liesel, the power of words and imagination becomes a way to escape the tumultuous events surrounding both her and everyone she knows and loves. In association with the higher educational language department of the University of Alicante, collaborating with the Youth Council, the film will be shown in English, and at the end the viewers are welcome to partake in a debate about the story they have just enjoyed, also conducted in English. The use of film and stories is not unique in language learning, but for the university to get behind the initiative to help those wishing to improve their English, it will no doubt add to the richness of learning that will allow those taking part to enjoy the values of cultural influences through historic storytelling.

The travelling exhibition is dedicated to the gold bullion ladened frigate Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, which sank in 1804 and was recovered by the Spanish government after winning a lawsuit brought against the salvage company Odyssey in the US courts. It explains the circumstances and historical ramifications of the ship’s fatal explosion, focusing on the archaeological aspect of the assets recovered from the wreck and touching upon the Spanish government’s legal battle to retrieve an important part of their national heritage.

But the noise being heard in the skies of La Petxina was the sound of mini engines flying unmanned vehicles, the main attraction at the European Congress on Mosquito Control, in which the use of drones to control the spread of mosquitoes was the main event.

The announcement was made this week during the fourteenth session of the commission of environmental monitoring of the airport, where the plans were laid out for the homes which work can begin immediately, as well as those where special planning will be required, and budget allocation. The environmental monitoring committee is comprised of representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, the Generalitat Valenciana, AENA and the municipalities of Elche and Alicante. A spokesperson for AENA said that the action “demonstrates the will of AENA to make consistent the quality of life of people with airport management, whilst providing a needed service for the proper development of economic and social activity in nearby areas and its area of influence”.

TRANSFORMING ELCHE’S REFUSE BINS Already the home to an international exhibition of street art along the Vinalopó River, Elche is set to see more colourful creations along the streets, as part of a campaign to offer street artists the opportunity to paint the recycling bins in the city. Proyecto Vibora, or Project Viper, saw the base of the river painted with colourful montages and murals that can be viewed from the high bridges of the city, attracting visitors from around the globe. Now, as part of Proyecto Vibora II, the new recycling bins will also be painted, with a dozen or so artists already involved in the project to transform the dull green containers. Although paining of bins is not unique and has been done in many areas already, the uniqueness of the home of the Vinalopó river project means that the containers in Elche will enhance what is already established as making the city the canvas for such a diverse range of artworks.

GUARDAMAR CASTLE INSTALLS NEW LIGHTING

One of the most iconic buildings in the region, the ancient citadel and Castillo de Guardamar del Segura, enjoys a privileged position dominating much of the Vega Baja, and now the castle also benefits from the installation of new lighting. At a cost of 60.000€ the installation began at the end of last summer. It was heavily subsidized by grants from both the Alicante Provincial Government and the Valencian Generalitat, and now this impressive structure can also be admired deep into the evening and night.

In tandem with the electrical work a council gang was also employed on the castle slopes carrying out maintenance and cleaning tasks so now the whole area is in pristine condition and ready to welcome the hundreds of locals and tourists who are expected to visit the site during the coming months. The mayor, Carmen Verdú, said that the City Council "is committed to the conservation and enhancement of the town’s archaeological heritage. The Castillo is an important feature of the town and helps attract tourists to the area, to which it also adds a great deal of value. "

ALMORA DI’S STICKY MESS to collect all the dropped fruit and cleam up the

The IU in Almoradi has criticized the local council for their delay in pruning many of the orange trees that adorn the town’s streets causing much of the fruit to drop onto the surrounding roads and pavements only to be mashed underfoot, thereby reducing many of the streets to a sticky underfoot mess. The lack of pruning is also creating further problems to many residents, particularly those who live in first floor apartments, as the foliage covers their windows blocking the natural light from streaming into their homes. A spokesmen for the IU said that last year, during the months of December and January, the council had used students in the Employment Gardening Workshop to prune the trees and clean up the streets and wondered why this year had not been done. They demanded that immediate action is now taken

DAYA NUEVA COPS MOBILE AGAIN The Local Police of Daya Nueva will be mobile once again soon, after the municipal government approved an extraordinary expense of 17,000 euro to buy the officers a patrol vehicle. The officers had been without a vehicle for a month, after the lease on their previous car expired and wasn´t renewed. Since then, the officers have been using a vehicle allocated to the Social Services, although that vehicle lacked the mandatory marking, lights and sirens for a police patrol vehicle. The finances were approved by the local government led by the UPDN Mayor, María Teresa Martínez, despite opposition from the Partido Popular, who criticised the move as they considered leasing is a better option than the outright purchase, on account of the risks involved in policing the streets and to save the future costs of repairs. The PP were also critical of the 2015 budget being reduced which would not have allowed for the lease payments to continue, with the assumption being that it was the intention all along to purchase a car.

SUMMERS BAR HELPING ELCHE BENIDORM KIDS GO TO TERRA MITICA CASTING CALL

Summer´s Bar in El Galan held what has been described as an “excellent” charity event last week, with special guest Ricky Valance joining in to help raise thousands to help the Elche Children´s home, for their “Convoy Of Happiness” tour to Terra Mitica in June.

The evening started with a three course meal and superb entertainment from Dan Davy and Richie Alexander with a raffle offering prizes donated by many of bar owner Trev Massey´s friends and fellow local business owners to help the cause. An auction was also one of the highlights of the night, with a generous auction prize donated by Serenity Sailing in Torrevieja seeing great interest and with a lot of bidding from the customers, all wanting to win the day on a chartered yacht, including lunch. The winning bid of 500€ was by regular Kate Sloan who very generously offered the prize to the next highest bidders, Norman & Valerie Rapley,

who in turn matched Kate´s winning bid. She then donated the 500€ direct to the charity, resulting in raising 1000€ for the auction alone. Trev Massey said, “I first spoke to my wife Debbie just 2 months ago and thought we could possibly raise most of the money needed by around June. I have been absolutely overwhelmed by the unending generosity shown by the regulars of Summer´s Bar El Galan, as well as the regulars in our other bar Massey´s Sports & Tapas in Blue Lagoon”. Continuing, “I would also like to thank BMC Removals and the Ladies Bingo Social Circle at Hollywood´s Bar Los Dolses for each donating 200€ and an extra special thank you to Help Vega Baja who invited me to their San Miguel shop to explain more about my plans. After listening to the plans in more detail, they offered to pay for the children´s entrance fee, totalling in excess of 1000€!!!” Summer´s Bar has another charity night planned on the 13th of March, priced at just 11.95€ per person, including a 3 course meal and entertainment by Gemma, Chloe Leigh and Kev Tyler. They are also asking for people to go through their cupboards at home and donate any unwanted items to the charity auction planned for the 16th of March. They are looking for electrical equipment, unwanted presents, books, dvds household goods, in fact anything that is in good condition that you no longer use that will be auctioned off to raise even money for this superb cause.

The producers of the ITV hit comedy Benidorm are once again looking for extras to take part in the next series, set to begin filming at the end of March.

ILLEGAL FIXING The CNMC stock market watchdog has slapped five Spanish energy firms with a combined €32.4 million in fines for gasoline price fixing and other unfair trade practices. Repsol, Cepsa, Disa, Galp and Meroil coordinated prices for gasoline and other fuel products, as well as exchanging inside information and agreeing to a non-aggression pact, the CMNC ruled. Repsol will have to pay the highest amount (€20 million) while Cespa was ordered to pay €10 million.

UNIFORM MISTAKE

You will need to be a permanent resident of the Benidorm area between March and July in order to be available for filming, and have an NIE and Social Security number to take part, although they are not compulsory. Casting will take place in the Hotel Meliá in Benidorm on Wednesday the 4th of March, from 10:00 until 13:30 and from 16:30 to 19:30. The team are looking for people of all ages, including children, and of all nationalities, although “British-looking” is an advantage. BURNING WASTE TIP BACK IN THE NEWS The visit coincided with the arrival of a reply to the denuncia elaborated by Las Ramblas Urbanizacion President , Bob Hammond with the help of C.L.AR.O. Although it has taken since July last year and a reminder, the Guardia Civil environmental branch, SEPRONA, has formally replied that the complaint made was investigated by them and their report was submitted to the criminal court in Orihuela which has accepted to investigate the complaint. Furthermore, SEPRONA, after confirming the facts detailed in the denuncia, have submitted a report to the Environmental Prosecutor in Alicante. Both their action in informing the criminal court in Orihuela and the Environment

The burning waste tip on the border of Orihuela Costa and Pilar, which has been spewing out toxic fumes for the last several years, was back in the news again this week. A team from the National Channel 1 TV was in the area investigating illegal waste tips and thanks to cooperation between C.L.A.R.O. and the action group against illegal waste tips, VERTIVEGA, after filming in La Murada, next to Orihuela city, they came to report on the burning waste tip on the border of Orihuela Costa and Pilar. This illegal waste tip pre-dates the La Murada tip and for many years was used to dump waste of all sorts from all over the area. It is a big financial advantage for those in charge of waste disposal to simply dump whatever they collect wherever they can rather than paying to have it disposed of and treated legally. For perhaps 20 years that was what they were doing

on the Orihuela Costa-Pilar border. Years after they stopped dumping, the process of natural internal combustion resulted in the mountain of rubbish beginning to smoulder and flame and spew toxic gases into the atmosphere. The national TV team were impressed by what they saw and filmed. The mountain of waste, perhaps 20 metres high and covering an area of some 50,000 square metres, the equivalent of 30 football pitches, contains waste of all sorts. Visible are remnants of tyres, plastic and metal and below the surface is decomposed and smouldering domestic waste. It is speculated that dangerous medical waste could also be buried in the depths of the mountain. The publicity which should come at national level from this visit could be most useful in getting the authorities to accept responsibility and decide to do something about this danger to the environment and public health.

Prosecutor in Alicante have been reported to the regional government in Valencia. The reply to the denuncia is formal and authoritative. The complaint is now not only in the hands of the criminal court in Orihuela but also in the hands of the Environmental Prosecutor. There can be every confidence that these proceedings will, with time, lead to a solution to the problem. The political authorities alone have not been willing to accept responsibility for what will be a costly process to remove or make safe the waste tip. But with the court and prosecutor service seized of the matter, there is good reason to hope that a solution will be imposed on them by the courts.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Pancakes, Vicars And Tarts Thankfully, few Canarians have anything to do with pancakes, which are very much a British and American thing. However, despite not having a ‘Pancake Day’ in quite the same way as in the UK, Canarians still enjoy the day, as well as quite a few days before and after, known as ‘Mardi Gras’, which means ‘Fat Tuesday’, or ‘Shrove Tuesday’. It is a time to really let your hair down before the gloomy period of self imposed penitence and repentance, known by Christians as Lent. Mardi Gras is a strange mixture of carnival, culture, tradition and religion, with the odd bit of debauchery thrown in for good measure. I guess this why so many people enjoy it, and its larger excesses are usually forgiven and forgotten. The self-imposed frugality of Lent is, thankfully, demanded far less by the Church nowadays, although for many, it is still a period of self reflection, denial and rededication. As with New Year resolutions, many people decide to “give up something” for Lent. Often, this consists of taking a ‘gentle approach’ by denying oneself certain types of food, such as chocolate, or a biscuit with morning coffee, whilst others may choose to take ‘the big bang approach’ by giving up Facebook, shaving, alcohol or, as one of my friends is insisting upon this year, carbon emissions. The practicality of this last choice has yet to be explained to me. Personally, I much prefer taking the ‘alternative approach’ of having a really good party during ‘Mardi Gras’, and not

worrying too much about the period of self-denial during the following forty days; there’s plenty of time to worry about such things when we are dead. During the week before the beginning of Lent, carnivals take place throughout the world, with some of the brightest, most unusual, biggest and best taking place in Spain and, in particular in the Canary Islands. All of the inhabited islands and most towns have their own versions of carnival, with those in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, as well as in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which are billed as “Second Only to Rio”, offering some of the most spectacular experiences that residents, expats and visitors will never forget. Annoyingly, unlike Christmas, Mardi Gras, Ash Wednesday and Lent can fall anytime between February 3rd and March 9th each year, since Easter is a moveable feast involving a calculation originally determined by the Catholic Church. As a result, Mardi Gras in many countries can hit a wet, cold period, or a deliciously warm one, which is usually the case in the Canary Islands. However, an early Mardi Gras does explain why many of the islands’ young men, who tend to dress up as half naked angels, found the evenings so chilly this year. The party is almost over, and costumes are being packed away as Carnival ends for another year. It grinds to a heady conclusion with a ritual funeral, called ‘The Burial of the Sardine’, in which a huge model of a sardine, accompanied by wailing, slutty widows, which some describe as a huge ‘Vicars and Tarts Party’, but with more dildos and greater blasphemy, is finally laid to rest. Does any of this make sense? Not really, but does it have to? In any case, it is great fun and if you haven't, you should try it sometime. It certainly blows away the winter blues! A TASTE OF SPANISH HISTORY Segovia & Salamanca Alongside the mountains of central Spain and only a fairly short drive from the Capital city of Madrid are three of the most outstanding cities of Spain Travelling to our city centre hotel based in the beautiful Segovia we arrive in time for you to start your explorations by enjoying an evening meal in one of its many restaurants, possibly trying the cochinillo (suckling pig), for which Segovia is famous. Segovia is built on a rock, this city has the appearance of a ship sailing between the mountain ranges. The ships bough formed by the fairytale castle sitting right at the front peak of the rock and overlooking a valley cut out by two rivers, Eresmas and Clamores. This medieval marvel has looked over the valley for centuries. Its rooms are filled with souvenirs of a fascinating past which include some of the most important people in Spanish history. Statutes and paintings which amount to a gallery of who’s who in medieval Spain, fill large grey walled rooms. While the castles location offers magnificent views over the well irrigated landscape which tumbles down to the burbling water of the two rivers. The massive cathedral, situated in the centre of the rock provides the sail for our ship. Sitting alongside a town square where people watching could become addictive, some time should be given to the interior of this stunning building. But even before you reach any of this, you are confronted with the most magnificent entry gate to any city anywhere in the world. The Segovia Roman Aquaduct. This 92 feet high, 2,883 feet long marvel of Roman architecture has stood in its present position, welcoming visitors to the town for over 2,000 years. A sight once seen, never to be forgotten. This is central Spain at its memorable best. After a day of rest and discovery of Segovia, day 3 takes us to Salamanca which orbits round the largest Plaza Mayor in the country.

In spring time storks circle over head and nest in the upper extremities of the attractive buildings which form the borders of a square, which provides a meeting, eating and drinking centre for locals and tourists alike. Uniquely, Salamanca boasts not one, but two universities and again uniquely two cathedrals. The unusual gold coloured stone used to construct the buildings glinting in the late evening sunshine, and taken from a nearby quarry, can be seen from a long way off across the flat planes surrounding the town. Boat rides are offered on the ample waters of the river Tormes which is straddled by a Roman bridge. Reminding us that not only the Romans, but before them the Carthaginians, and after them the Moors and then the Christian Monarchs ruled this land. A day in Salamanca opens the door to ancient Spanish culture mingling with the energy of young Spain. Many young people fill the Plaza Mayor, the streets and the cafes. These are young people who come here from all over the world to study in the world famous universities of a town of great character which has over the centuries, marked its place in history as an outstanding centre of learning. On our way back to the hotel it would be silly to pass by the historic city of Avila without taking a quick stop.

Avila, is famed for almost perfect medieval city walls.

Segovia, where the massive cathedral, situated in the centre of the rock provides the sail for our ship

Avila, is famed for almost perfect medieval city walls. Storks nesting in the turrets of the walls add to the excitement of a visit to the fabulously historical city. Inside the walls once gathered the “Knights of Avila” giving faithful service to the Christian monarchs in their battle against the Muslim Moors. Now cobbled streets lead you past ancient Celtic sculptures to the massive old cathedral. Our final day gives us a short morning visit to Madrid, where the capital city has many different aspects for you to enjoy with time for lunch before making our way back to our original destination. You can travel to all of these cities on an excellent 4 day excursion which is being offered by David’s Coachtrips SL for only 169€. The excursion is based in a 3* Segovia city hotel on a bed and breakfast basis and includes all excursions. Dates 4 days 13-16 April Great Value !!

£3 MILLION MAPPING PROJECT FOR UK ROADS

Department for Transport project with Ordnance Survey will deliver the next generation road mapping for England and Wales. Transport Minister Robert Goodwill has announced that the Department for Transport will contribute £3 million to help create a digital road map that will give the most detailed information yet to councils and emergency services. The new map, developed by Ordnance Survey, has the potential to transform how all levels of government maintain and improve roads by detailing information such as road widths, traffic calming measures and height and weight restrictions. This dataset could also be linked to other information held by government, including planned road works and cycle paths. The information may also be used in satellite navigation systems. It will also help emergency services find the quickest routes when responding to 999 calls. Transport Minister Robert Goodwill said: “This government is backing schemes that will make Britain’s transport system world-class. This mapping project has the potential to substantially improve how we look after our roads. It will help make journeys more efficient and ensure traffic keeps moving. This fund-

ing demonstrates our commitment to funding the technology of the future, which will drive economic growth and create jobs. Neil Ackroyd, Ordnance Survey Acting Chief Executive, said: “We’re pleased to be working with the Local Government Association, GeoPlace and the Local Highways Authorities to create a single, unified highways product for use across both the public and private sector.” The new product will consist of the high quality data submitted by local authorities through the National Street Gazetteer (NSG) com-

bined with Ordnance Survey’s widely-used authoritative and fully maintained geographic roads data, creating a definitive highways network for England and Wales. Local and national government currently use a variety of maps when planning road projects and maintenance. The new mapping system will bring all existing information together, cutting bureaucracy and saving money spent by councils and government on exchanging and comparing different maps. The new digital road map will be added to the Public Sector Mapping Agreement allowing all areas of the public sector to access the data. An entry-level open data version of the road map will also be made available with a full commercial product appearing in the future. Ordnance Survey, working with street data experts GeoPlace, plan to deliver the initial products to the Department for Transport and public sector before the end of March 2015.

MERCEDES CLA SHOOTING BRAKE The CLA Shooting Brake joins the A-, B-, CLA and GLA, as the fifth and final model to be built on Mercedes' MFA platform. The new car completes the small-car range that was one of the first projects instigated by Gorden Wagener when he became the firm's design director in mid-2008. The new CLA bodystyle follows the larger CLS Shooting Brake, which launched two years ago. Mercedes calls its new car ‘a contemporary interpretation of [Mercedes' overall design philosophy] Sensual Purity, and represents the perfect synthesis between the emotionality of a coupé and the intelligence of a shooting brake.' The Shooting Brake features the same high beltline as the CLA sedan, but the extended roofline and tapering rear give the new car a rather different appearance, and we'll have to see the car in the metal to see how harmonious the blend of three typologies - coupé, sedan and wagon - has been. One thing that should be noted that more gently curving DLO does appear to help rectify the limited ingress and egress for rear-seat passengers that afflicts the sedan, and the luggage space is also improved.

OVER 6000 FOLLOWERS FOR GUARDIA CIVIL TRAFICO

The N332 driving information page on Facebook reached a new milestone on Friday, now having more than 6,000 followers. The officers behind the initiative would not only like to thank all the people who have subscribed to their information, but also the press and media who have been supportive in their campaign. Spokesperson for the group, Francisco Morales, himself a serving officer, said, “When we first came up with the idea of providing information to the English speaking expats in our area, we hoped to get maybe a hundred or two hundred followers, we never imagined how popular the page would be”. Now with members from all around Spain, not just the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa area where the officers operate, it is clear that the information is being greatly received. “We also want to thank the press, newspapers, magazines and radio stations for helping us publish our information. Many of them have started to publish our articles, many others are helping spread the word about our newsletter, website and our Facebook page”. “Of course on Facebook we still receive numerous questions from our followers”, Francisco continues, “and we still try to interact and answer as much as we can, but with now 6,000 followers, wow, it´s a lot of work to keep up, but we are grateful to every single one of the followers for reading the articles and asking question, as well as those who share the information with their friends”.

RETAILERS CALL FOR LIMIT TO SUPERSTORE OPENING HOURS The Torrevieja retailers association, APYMECO, are calling on political parties to join in a campaign that would limit the opening hours of large supermarkets, in order to give more opportunities for smaller businesses to compete for trade. Torrevieja has been one of the worst places hit by the growth of large retail outlets, firstly with the creation of the Habaneras shopping centre, which itself then suffered after the opening of the Zenia Boulevard. Many small businesses have closed down, unable to compete with the retail monsters, which is clear by the countless vacant premises on every street of the city centre. The group hope that by ensuring a commitment to control the opening hours of larger stores, shoppers may well return to the smaller outlets and support their local businesses more.

CAMPS REMAINS AS ADOPTED SON

They are still in the process of cataloguing our articles on the website, n332.es, which Francisco also says is a “huge job”, especially as there are so many different topics to cover, but “by focussing on the areas and questions that come up most often, we hope that the information will continue to grow into a valuable resource for anybody driving in Spain”. You can visit the website at www.n332.es, where you can also sign up for their periodic newsletter, and also join the ever growing group of followers on Facebook, just search for N332.

Using their majority in government, the Partido Popular of Torrevieja rejected a motion on Friday tabled by the Los Verdes green party to remove the title of “adopted son” of Torrevieja given to the former president of the region, Francisco Camps.

The spokesperson for the PP, Joaquín Albaladejo, justified the rejection on account of the belief that the motion is driven solely by personal obsession on the part of the greens, as it is the third time the motion has been tabled, and the third time it has been rejected. José Manuel Dolón, the spokesperson for the Los Verdes, says that the reason for the claim is that Camps “is an example of a management period of the Partido Popular splashed by corruption” and that the former mayor, Pedro Hernández Mateo, now in prison, only made the proposal to affirm his own personal political career. The PSOE socialists supported the motion, whereas the alternative APTCE group abstained.

BRITS STILL HEAD THE LIST OF INTERNATIONAL BUYERS OF SPANISH PROPER TY According to the latest data from the College of Registrars, around 13% of all property purchases in Spain in 2014 were made by international buyers, a year on year increase on the 2013 figure of just over 11%, and the fifth consecutive year of growth. Of those international buyers, Brits were, once again, the biggest investors with around 17% of all property transactions registered in 2014. This figure was leaps ahead of other nationalities with the French taking 10% share, the Russians with 7.5% share, followed by

the Belgians (7%), Swedish (6%), Norwegians (4%), Chinese (3.5%), and Romanians (2.5%). The College of Registrars suggests that there will continue to be strong demand for Spanish property from international buyers for the foreseeable future and the strengthening in demand for property in Spain suggests that international buyers are growing in confidence when it comes to the Spanish housing market. Spain is seen not just as an attractive tourist destination but also a great opportunity for investors following the dramatic reduction in property prices since

2007. Average property prices are some 43% off their 2007 highs and are currently considered undervalued. The majority of international buyers come from the Eurozone, so the drop in the value of the Euro does not affect them. However, the Brits have benefitted in recent months due to a strengthening of Sterling against the Euro. Coupled with cheap Euro mortgages, quantitive easing, and Spanish banks returning to their traditional business of lending, there has never been a bigger incentive for international investors to dig deep and buy property in Spain.

SPAIN PROPERTY SALES RISE BY 19.1% IN 2014 ACCORDING TO SPANISH NOTARIES The General Council of (Spanish) Notaries has reported a 19.1% year on year increase in the total number of property transactions. During 2014 364,601 properties were exchanged according to the latest statistics released by the General Council of Notaries. 290,441 apartments were sold in 2014, a year on year increase of 17.3%. There was a reduction in the number of new apartments sold of 9.6% while the number of resale apartments exchanged increased by 23.5%. 74,160 family homes were exchanged, a year on year increase of 26.8%.

Overseas Property Bonanza For The North West Exclusive opportunities to snap up bargain homes abroad will present themselves in the North West next month, when a leading property expo returns to Manchester, said OverseasGuidesCompany.com, who is looking forward to helping visitors to the event buy abroad safely. “A Place in the Sun Live in Manchester is an unmissable event for anyone thinking of purchasing overseas,” said Angelos Koutsoudes, Head of OverseasGuidesCompany.com. “We’ve exhibited at the London and Birmingham shows for several years and believe there is plenty of appetite for owning an overseas home amongst people who live in the North West. “Right now, conditions in Eurozone hotspots, including Spain and France, remain very kind to UK buyers, wherever they are from, thanks to stagnant property prices, and favourable euro mortgage and exchange rates. But locally in the North West, interest should also be fuelled by recovering domestic house prices and the expanding flights network out of local airports. “A leading analyst reported this month that momentum behind house price growth in the UK has shifted to northern cities, who have lagged behind London and the South-east. This should help create a feel good factor in the North of England, and is good news for anyone selling their property to relocate abroad or to buy a holiday home. “Meanwhile, another positive sign is the ever-increasing air traffic at Manchester Airport. Officially the UK’s third busiest airport, Manchester hit the 22 million passenger mark for the first time since 2007, in January 2015, and there are now more than 22 million people living within two hours of Manchester Airport – many of whom who will be in the market for a second home overseas.

ANGELS, ANGELS, ANGELS.......AROUND US AND WAITING TO BE CONTACTED BY YOU Every now and then we need to stand still for a moment, take time out to listen and ask ourselves...what do we want from life? What do we want to achieve? And finally.........How are we going to do it? Christine Quinlan has been here on the Costa Blanca for 10 years and a regular contributor to the Leader and this time Christine has asked those questions above so you can stop and think about your life. Christine is a Angelic Reiki Master and uses many aspects of spirituality in her life and she knows that she can help to answer these questions, but she will have help...from her angels and wants you to know that you can get help too. You are never alone and angels accompany you constantly, even when you are unaware of or don't believe in their presence. The angels want to interact with you more frequently. They'd love to be fully involved with every aspect of your life, yet they cannot help you unless you specifically ask. Like many practices that are good for us, such as meditation and exercise, we benefit by making angel communication a regular part of your life. We needn't wait until a crisis or pressure has hit before asking our angels for help. In fact, it's a good idea to work with your angels in any trying situation before it gets to boiling point. However, if you forget to include your angels in your plans, they will still answer your call for “help” if you get into a jam. There are no limits to what your angels can do in your life. They are very, very powerful beings. Once you invite them into your life, get ready because your life will change in very miraculous ways. If you don't quite yet fully believe in angels, you will know that they are real after asking for and receiving their help two or three times. The Angelic Realm loves you and they see you as you truly are on the inside..as an innocent and perfect child of God. They know that you have made occasional mistakes, just like the rest of us. Yet, angels overlook our errors and see the love and good intentions within our hearts. See yourself and others through the eyes of an angel, and you'll see a beautiful world that is light, bright and hopeful

HOW CAN I CONNECT TO THESE WONDERFUL ANGELS? Christine is holding two workshops in March so come along and meet your angels and connect to their energy.

INTRODUCTION TO YOUR ANGELS is being held on Saturday 14th March at Lotus Yoga Studios, from 12.00 – 4.00 at Lotus Yoga Studios,1st floor, Bahia Las Dunas C.C., between Mercadona and Iceland, La Marina, at a price of 15 euros. All your questions will be answered, and there are many, and lots more on that day and have fun with the energy...and you will get to feel your angel wings

WORKING WITH YOUR ANGELS is being held on Saturday 28th March at the Lotus Yoga Studios, from 12.00 -4.00 at Lotus Yoga Studios, 1st floor, Bahia las Dunas C.C. Between Mercadona and Iceland, La Marina, at a price of 15 euros. You will be able to work with and feel your angels, see them, hear them and use their wonderful energy. BRM was Barbara Doran, Zoe Wilcock & Skip Steve Grey (25/12 ). MAPLES took on the Q Pearls at home and achieved a matched draw; 3 rinks and 115 shots each. How unusual is that?? Maples BRM was Di Lawton, Trevor Vanner & Ian Brewster (28/14) SABA Voyager Div. LS Sputnics came to Greenlands to play the CHESTNUTS and put up a great fight. In the early part of the contest the match was all going to the CHESTNUTS. However, midway we started to lose our way and the end result was 2 rinks to us and 102 shots to their 106. Very close but we only got 4 points !! Our BRM was Ron Stansfield, Charles Langlois & Skip Lin Miller (23/21). WINTER LEAGUE & BERLEEN TROPHY. The BULLS obviously like a good night out treading the boards before a match. However, a fantastic win 8 points to Nil with 61 shots to EI 36. No frustration this week except for EI Leprechauns. BRM by a whisker was Sue Johnson, Steve Hibberd, Mel Brown & Skip Lin Miller (21/10) the other result was 21/12!!. Getting the week under way again were the Flamingos who flew north on Monday, 23 February to take on La Marina Pathfinders in a SABA Discovery league match. It was the Flamingos who were flying high at the end of the game, winning on four rinks as well as the long game. Winning teams were Carole Donnellan, Del Gunning and Karen Kirk 20-13. Sandra McIlroy, Ray Emmett and Peter Dix 22-16. Jean Turner, Dennis Birkett and Peter Whitehall 24-14. Doreen Statham, Pat Emmett and Trish Dix 26-11. Overall shots Flamingos 118 (10 pts) Pathfinders 91 (4 pts). Next up on Thursday, 26 February were the Clarets who entertained Quesada Panthers in a Federated Fours match. It proved to be a one sided match, with Quesada sweeping the board. Overall shots Clarets 39 (0 pts) Panthers 75 (8 pts). I was a bit disheartened until I saw the results from the other two games that were played, with both away teams recording wins with the same score of 8 nil. Funny old games bowls. The final game of the week saw the Ramblers travel to La Siesta on Friday, 27 February to take on the Blues in a CBBA Southern league game. It was honours even at three wins each at the end of the game but the Blues just edged ahead in the long game to take the two extra points and win the match. Well done to Carole Donnellan, Dennis Birkett and Peter Whitehall 32-13. Pat Patton, Billy Price and Brian Patton 18-11. Pat Emmett, Trish Dix and John Palmer 20-14. Overall shots Ramblers 105 (6 pts) Blues 112 (8 pts). www.countrybowlsclub.com You will find the El Rancho and San Miguel BC Reports on page 36.

180´s: Peter Ayres x 2 (Porter House), Pat Abrams, Alex Nikolov, Lee Maiden x 2 (Meerkats), Mike Smith x 2, Del Lister (Breakaways), Shaun Smith, Nick Spicer (Hyenas), Matt Cummins (Pint Depot Kings), Derek Halpin (Evolution), Simone de Lacy (Junction Jaguars) Highest finish: 158 Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars), Nick Spicer (Hub Hyenas) Another break from the league programme this coming Thursday, this time for the KO Pairs qualifying round. Some very strong pairs compete for a semi final place on the 30th April, but this time round no defending champions. Sid Cross and Steph Simpson, last season´s victors are no longer, Cross is pairing with Yvonne Rouffignac and Simpson unable to compete, not a bad team though and in with an outside chance. Ray Harvey once again joins Mark Filer hoping to go one better this year after losing 3-2 in last season´s final. Both Meerkats and Hyenas field strong teams the best of which is Pat Abrams and Lee Maiden who I just make joint favourites with Nick Spicer and John Eyre over the Busters pair. You wouldn’t wish to play Mike Smith and Del Lister first game, they will be straight out of the blocks with some explosive scoring, Smith unlikely to miss any doubles. Plenty of other good teams including former champions Alex Nikolov and Paul Durrant from the Meerkats. Only one team to qualify from each of the four venues, the Hub, Evolution, Porter House and Breakaways. Format best of 3 legs 601. Good luck to all entrants. Back to league matters with Meerkats unbeaten record intact after a good home win to their bogey side Porter House. The visitors underperformed this week and were punished with some sharp finishing from the hosts. Ray Hayes 140 in the first, countered by Pat Abrams 2x100 and D10 for an early lead. Yvonne Rouffignac´s 95 was the only offering in the second leg as Lee Maiden 140, Dave Frew 83,121 and Del Kingsbury D4 made it 2 up for the Kats. Matt Jackson, a real find for the Porters this season, whacked in a 140 in the third, but the

Maiden was flying with 83 and 140 in the second pair with Kingsbury against Sid Cross and Debbie Metcalfe. Cross did the scoring and Metcalfe, no slouch herself, got the winner on D6 with a smile lasting the rest of the evening. Ray Sanderson and Mike Newberry hoped it would be a turning point, but Frew had other ideas throwing 133 and 95, partner Graham Todd finding D16 for a 5-1 half time score. Nikolov ensured the draw with a 2-0 victory over Rouffignac, mustering 2x100 and five 80+ scores, the Porter not quite in her usual groove. An opening ton from Jackson spurred on Maiden in the next who replied with 81 and 100 eventually taking the leg on D10. The Porter showed what he is capable of with 140,100 and a 98 to set up the finish. Maiden´s response was 100,121 wise. EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Rightmove. Monday found The Broncos playing away to The Pioneers at La Siesta, which is always a tough venue, but there were some close rinks despite coming away with just the one point and our newer players are learning a great deal. ESTRELLA DAMM CRIBBAGE By Ron Sheldon 23rd Feb and week 22 and once again there is no change in the top 6 places but the gap is closing on Dorothy’s Magpies who were hammered by Ron’s Nacho’s Voles in 2nd place who had Terry & Elsa best with 3 wins while for the Magpies, Stewart & Jane blobbed this week with a zero score. Of the 28 pointers Richard’s Ospreys slipped up against Alan’s Robins who had George & Nigel maximising on 3 wins while all 3 pairs for the Ospreys could only manage 1 win each. Next on 28 are Brian’s Jaguars who slipped up against Peter’s Galleon running the tide also on 28 points with 2 pairs on 2 wins each while for the Jaguars Shelagh & Basil were best also with 2 wins. Ayliff’s Alpha’s went home happy after their fine win at Da Vinci’s against Paul’s Catorce who had all 3 pairs on 1 win each while Lynda & Jan headed the night with 3 wins for Da Vinci’s. Mick’s Lo Crispin moved up1 place after their 7-2 win against Keith’s E&I Merlins for whom Ted & Mike scored a sorry zero while for The Taverners 2 pairs scored a maximum 3 wins. Brian’s Galea had a crushing victory over my “out of sorts” Falcons and moved up 2 places thanks to 2 pairs with 3 wins each while Barry & Jill attained a zero score for us. Mike’s Peacocks, on a roll with 6 consecutive wins had a close win against Les’s Jays whose best were Ian & John with 2 wins while Mary & Jean F. topped the night with their 3 wins for the Peacocks. Last but not least are Steve’s Steakhouse who let in Jim’s Sharks for their 3rd consecutive win with 2 pairs scoring 2 wins each while Lin & Sandra had a sorry zero score for the Steakhouse.

LO MARABU GOLF SOCIETY

TMGS ENJOY THEIR DAY AT LA MARQUESA

(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Around and about the Golf Courses – Villaitana (Benidorm) The golf resort at Villaitana (Benidorm) is of Jack Nicklaus design and when originally opened to the public some 9 years ago was originally called Real de Faula and consists of the Levante par 72 championship course and the Poniente par 62 course. The Levante course is an attractive course with stunning views over both the mountains and Benidorm to the Mediterranean sea and is a good test of golf. The Poniente on first examination appears unattractive to the competitive and serious golfer because it consists of short par 3 and par 4 holes but again the views are stunning and the course is a little gem and well worth a game. The management of the course is currently under the control of Blue Green Management until 30th April 2015 after which the day to day management will revert to Meliá Hotels International re-integrating all facilities under one single management company. Clearly all existing agreements and price strategies will be reviewed by the new management team and perhaps it may be prudent to take the short trip to Benidorm for a game to plays these courses before the changes take place. Weather Watch We have blue skies forecast for much of the week with just a threat of showers on Wednesday and temperatures start in the mid 20 degree's at the start of the week but fall to the high teen degrees by the end of the week. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. The deals shown in the table are some of the best currently available to you. The Silver Category winners What can one say when 36 golfers turn up at La Marquessa to find the course in good condition and the greens in excellent condition. Yes, there is work being carried out on this hard to find course, but it must be said that the staff are very friendly and bend over backwards to help their patrons. Only 3 of the NTP’s were all won and the recipients of authentic Austrian chocolates which were donated by Olga Haubner and no doubt enjoying the chocolates as I type were Gerd Cromm, Alan Rickers and Roger Nielson. The Best Guests of the day were 2 females and Rose Cox who took 2nd slot with 36 points, but lost out to G. Handeland’s 38 points. The Silver Division players had a very good day andf two players broke their handicaps. Audrey

Mellor’s 33 points took 4th slot, and Sandra Twentyman’s 36 took 3rd and maybe also the Player of the Month title too. Olga Haubner and Roger Nielson shared the top slots with 38 points, but Roger took the main prize due to having the lower handicap. The Gold Division was tight and the a brace of 33’s saw S Sonneson claim 4th spot with Steve Higgins the 3rd slot. Gerd Cromms 34 was enough for 2nd place and John Mellor’s level par of 36 was enough to take home the voucher for a free game of golf at La Marquessa. Photo: Silver Category Winners. Our next game, Wednesday 4th Martch 2015 is at Campoamor, so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966719604.

In assn with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services at Font Del Llop - 26th February By Mike Probert For this month’s meeting a group of 23 players visited the established course at Font del Llop taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. PERITO AND CO LEAD THE WAY AT EUROGOLF SOCIETY On a bright sunny morning the format for this week’s competition was a team game of `yellow peril` played on our home course La Marquesa. With ideal conditions some good scores were expected, as long as team members managed to score double when it was their turn to play the yellow ball. Clearly one team had the winning formula, coming in first place with an impressive score of 148 points, the team of Pino Perito, Joe Ogden, Gordon Bourne and Bev Fairhurst. Close behind, in second place the team of Bob Buckeridge, Mary Sanderson, Gill Gordon and Geoff Evans scoring 146 points. SUCINA GOLF SOCIETY AT LAS RAMBLAS GC A re-visit for our 2nd game this year to Las Ramblas. Definitely a “ quackers “ of a day! A forecast of heavy rain & wind was predicted, but for most of the players, they managed to complete their holes with some sun & wind, albeit cold. The last few groups out were looking at some “ black clouds” for their last few holes and unfortunately experienced some heavy rain & blustery winds The Course was in a good condition and greens playing quite fast. Unfortunately the lament of one duck & his grieving relatives was a sad end to the day. One point in mind also, is the blind spot for groups teeing off,

particularly on holes 2 & 5 whereby they are unable to see other players around the green area. Luckily no injuries were incurred, but provided some amusing tales back at the club house. Presentations of the prizes were made back at Franc y Louise Bar in Sucina. Overall results were:1st Place - Sofie Ekberg, Andres Ekberg, Christine Comber & Colin Comber 65.8pts. 2nd Place - Wayne Harris, George Rowe, Sue Grewer & Phil Robinson (on c/back) -

66.3pts, 3rd Place - Peter Robinson, John Storey, Mike Harding & Gary Smith (on c/back) - 66.3pts Nearest the pins went to: Hole 6 - Ian D White, Hole 10 - George Rowe, Hole 12 John Storey and Hole 14 - Colin Comber Our next meeting is at El Valle on Tuesday 17th March. Format is an Individual Stableford with an addition of team game. Entry Sheet is on the Noticeboard in Franc & Louise Bar, Sucina or contact any Committee Member. It was up the road to Monforte del Cid, that’s near Elche to the well look after course Alenda Golf thankfully the weather had improved to bless our February Away Day, although as we rached the higher ground the wind started to bite. As always the Alenda course was in good condition ,even with its winter coat on. With blustery conditions, the Captain managed to screw his drive right, finishing nearly out of bounds, but managed to get the ball back into play with a superb 8 iron. Stevie Bicks claimed the bottle of Bacardi prize for being closest to Drive-In marker. Winner - James Cleary with Captain, Tony Hall Winner on the day was James Cleary (h/cap 22.8) with 37 stableford points. Ian Connell (h/cap 16.6) was runner up with 35 points. SPORTSMAN G.S. QUESADA @ Alicante Golf Wednesday 25th February 2015 A good turnout of 25 players for the outing at Alicante Golf, taking advantage of the offer from the course of €40 including coffee and toast on arrival. This was taken at a local bar due to the Golf course bar being closed. The course was not in great condition, however, this can be put down to the time of year. The wind was brutal as it has been I'm sure for the last couple of months (Roll on summer) and as always with some tight fairways and long par 3's it proved a test even for the best. The winning score of 29 points was achieved by Steve Fleet. It was a good day on a testing course under very testing conditions, I for one certainly enjoyed being back on the golf course. Due to our large donation of prizes we managed to cover all par 3's NTP albeit only 3 greens were hit. A big thank you to Tracey at the Galleon Bar, Quesada for donating the vino and serving up a cracking Sweet and Sour Chicken & Rice. Our thanks go to prize donations also from Alec Aspden. Winners of the Day : Winner : Steve Fleet 29 points Runner-up : John Kemp 28 points 3rd Place : Gary Strowger 26 points Nearest the Pins : 3rd George Curran 6th Steve Fleet 8th No Winner 12th Dave Smith 15th No Winner 17th No Winner Football Card : Dave Smith Thanks all for a great day, next outing is our bounce game at Font Del Llop Thursday 12th March, (€40 GF & Buggy) book early as places are limited. Then Wednesday 25th March @ La Serena Golf, (€42 GF & Buggy). Fully subscribed, however, the reserve list is open. CHANGING PARTNERS WITH LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY We started the week with a Change Partners which was won with a score of 84 pts by the team of Annemarie Weisheit, Lindsay Forbes, Dave Pulling and Rod Doel. It was the second round of our Medal Championship on Wednesday with the winner of the Ladies and Gents Divisions being the player with the most points from the best 4 of 6 rounds. Six points are awarded for first place, five for second and so on with all players submitting a card receiving at least one point. Prizes were available as usual on the day for the first 3 places in each category. The playing conditions were extremely testing with strong winds blowing and it was no surprise that almost half the field submitted a No Return and that there

were no 2's in the 2's Club. The best of those who managed to complete their rounds were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Benedicte Kruse 76, 2nd Olga Douglas 78, 3rd Barry Holtham 80 Cat 2. 1st Geoff Biggerstaff 76, 2nd Reg Akehurst 79, 3rd Mike Chapman 80 On Friday we played a 6x6x6 and again the strong winds persisted making scoring difficult. The winning team with a score of 81 pts were the team of Lindsay Forbes, Doug Wright, Barry Holtham and Heinz Lei. By Mike Chapman
