PSOE VISION FOR ORIHU ELA
Tel: 96 673 0057
Hundreds of people attended a rousing rally this week that saw the socialist mayoral candidate for the PSOE in Orihuela, Carolina Gracia, present her vision for the future of the municipality, should her party win the elections in May. The La Lonja exhibition centre in Orihuela was the venue where more than 500 members and supporters of the local PSOE attended the presentation, along with the
regional presidential candidate, Ximo Puig, and his former Basque counterpart, Patxi López. Addressing the gathered supporters, López praised “the passion that Carolina has for Orihuela”, because “passion is the best engine to change things”. López also affirmed his belief that the Oriolana candidate is a “referent honest socialist”, and that “socialism has equality and social justice as its trademark”, without corruption or “kneeling”, a socialism that does not take advantage of the crisis to do business. FROM PAGE ONE For his part, the regional presidential candidate for a socialist run Government of Valencia, Ximo Puig, expressed his gratitude to all who “have allowed Orihuela to now be a decent, honest and clean city free from political criminals”. Puig also assured the supporters that “Carolina will have a government of the Generalitat by her side”, because “Orihuela will be at the Palau de la Generalitat” when the Valencian Socialists put an end to “20 years of abuse” and “belittling” of the citizens of this land. Gracia herself expressed her pride in being involved and representing the Socialist Party of Orihuela, having been part of a new wave of politics in “a stained city”, the resulting cleanliness meaning that she is now “feeling increasingly proud”. Gracia continued to describe how the legacy of the Partido Popular rule left then with the remnants of “the worst of legislatures” and “with a crushing debt” that the current socialist led coalition had to deal with. Both the local and Regional government left a “ruined and dismantled City”. Continuing to explain how despite all the difficulties encountered along
Monday, 16th March, 2015 the way, “we fought against resignation, because we could not give up” and allow another government to form, “and we succeeded”, she proclaimed. Gracia then went on to thank “all those who helped us” by voting in the last elections, to “restore dignity and pride that we had been robbed of, allowing s to build a better Orihuela”. Affirming, “Thank you all, thanks for making it possible that Orihuela has changed so much in four years”. The praise then shifted to her own colleagues, the councillors that have accompanied her throughout these four years in municipal government: “Rosa, who has made education its flag; Antonio, who has managed to be a great mayor of Orihuela in recent months; Luis, who has faced difficult terrain for the sports department but still remained a good public service; Victor, who has virtue of his youth and has become the best works council the city has ever had”, concluding her gratuities towards Ana Mas and Antonia Moreno. Finally, Gracia stated her commitment to “continue building a city that generates wealth and prosperity for everyone, a municipality for citizens and equality”, whilst promoting
tourism to support the economy, by encouraging the industry to settle in Orihuela; by valuing the agriculture and food sector, and to achieve a

NEW HEALTH CENTRE NUMBERS Many people who have tried to use the service may already be aware, but a number of telephone numbers for local clinics have changed over recent weeks. At this point, Carolina Gracia recalled that there have been thirty-nine occasions that the PP has promised this improvement since

HORADADA REMEMBERS VICTIMS OF TERRORISM This week saw the eleventh anniversary of the 2004 terrorist attacks in Madrid, when 192 people were killed and thousands still bear the scars of a tragedy that rocked the world. In Pilar de la Horadada, the memorably named plaza Víctimas del Terrorismo saw a concentration gather to mark the tragedy, by holding a minute´s silence in memory of those affected by the attack. The Mayor, José Fidel Ros, said, “Having a plaza named in honour of the victims of terrorism is nothing more than a sad reality that reminds us, not only today March 11, but every day, the pain and tragedy caused in our democracy by terrorist acts.” Carlos Ruiz, a neighbour of Pilar also spoke, saying, “the only mistake that many of the 900 victims of ETA was to love Spain and desire
peace. My only hope is to actually have peace and the terrorists responsible are in jail. For them, and because in Spain we need memory, dignity and justice, we meet here today.” The members of the municipal government, members of local police and some residents attended the minute of silence after which a wreath in memory of the victims was placed “with the same objective of each year, to remember every one of the people who lost their lives and call through our minute of silence in which the values that should be our way of life: freedom, equality, justice, political pluralism and democracy, are not lost to the violence a few”, concluded the Mayor Ros.

THE FORGOTTEN’ PART OF GUARDAMAR DEL SEGURA Among the sea of skips there are even a number of abandoned boats
Guardamar resident Anthony Nicholson wrote to the Leader highlighting the neglect currently being felt in certain parts of Guardamar , areas that were largely being ignored by the City Council, particularly the developed area adjacent to the River Segura which stretches down to The Marina. He describes it as ‘the forgotten’ part of Guardamar del Segura’ and as such, like any responsible citizen, he complained via the council website. He subsequently received a sympathetic reply advising him that the matter would be referred to the relevant council officer. That was two years ago, since when, it would appear that the matter has been largely ignored. Tony says that the main problem is due to the fact that there are many dozens of small plots, all the property of individual owners, which are still available for sale, and now, after a decade of neglect, these individual plots have become uncared for, overgrown and are now only used as sites for the disposal of refuse, machinery, unwanted household goods and other waste equipment. After 10 years of virtual disregard he now says that the time has arrived where the Guardamar Town Hall should order the private land owners to clean up the areas and in some cases repair or install fences and at least make the area look a little more respectable. There are also many other areas of public land in the area that he feels are just as neglected. The largest of these is the vast area opposite MasyMas Supermarket. Why not develop the land and put it to use, he asks, or at the very least just clear and tidy it up. Tony explains ‘You can often find mattresses and other
household items here that have been dumped around its perimeter. There were plans for a Mini Golf Course there ten years ago but still nothing. Other areas of public land are at the junctions of Avinguda del Port / Enginyer Juan Garcia and Perez Hernandez / Enginyer Juan Garcia. These are also overgrown and full of rubbish and surely the Town Council can tidy these up’. ‘The community either side of the Avinguda Del Port has no soul. There is nowhere for neighbours and friends to meet, talk, socialise or eat together. Thankfully we have a MasyMas to shop in but nothing else. This area needs something to attract more visitors and make it vibrant. It needs businesses, retail outlets and restaurants.’ He also asks why the area has never been given Urbanisation Status? Guardamar Sector Sup-7 area seems to have been originally developed with the expansion of The Marina into a Port as its main foundation but this was cancelled with the emergence of the recession. Now it seems unlikely that it will ever materialise and the neighbourhood will continue to decline unless there is investment in an area which But to at least partially satisfy the many local residents and make the area a little more pleasant to live in, the City Council should at the very least mount a cleanup campaign in an area has so much potential and beauty adjacent the forest and beach.

PARENTS FORCED TO COMPENSATE FOR STONE THROW DEATH For the first time in Spain, the Provincial Court of Murcia has condemned the parents of children who threw stones from a bridge onto a road, killing the passenger of a car, and ruled that compensation must be paid by those parents. The Leader reported in July, 2012, how a 59 year old man was killed after being hit by a large stone dropped from a bridge onto the vehicle he was travelling in on the La Manga to Cartagena motorway. The 112 emergency centre received a call from a concerned motorist at 22:38 reporting the presence of a group of children, aged between 10 and 15, on the bridge near the urbanización Los Cármenes, in the Los Belones area, who were seen to be throwing stones at cars on the highway. Nearly a half hour later, at 23:07, they received another call reporting that an object had struck a vehicle and hit one of the occupants of the car. The blue Renault Clio was hit by a large stone weighing around 15 kilos, which hit the front seat passenger, Gilles Philippe Albanese, a French National who was a former glass cleaner, born in Algeria but now living in La Unión. Having smashed through the windscreen, the rock impacted the man´s chest and it is believed that he died instantly due to the impact. The driver managed to bring the car to a controlled stop on the hard shoulder of the motorway. A further witness, who was alerted by the noise the impact made, stated that he thought he saw, “three or four kids, aged ten to fifteen years”, fleeing the scene of the bridge. A group of four boys were identified to the police and were said to have been ejected from a community swimming pool earlier. They had then been witnessed by several people throwing stones from the bridge. The police visited the homes of one of those indicated, a child originally from Murcia who now lives with his parents in Madrid and was on holiday in the area, who then admitted that he was the one who dropped the boulder, identifying two more of his friends, aged 11 and 13. As the principal offender was identified and was just 13 years of age, he fell below the statutory age of criminal liability, which is 14, and could not be prosecuted for his actions, nor could he face any kind of criminal justice. Now, in the ruling issued this week, the parents of three children should compensate the family of the deceased man with more than 163,000 euro. Stone throwing on the roads has become an increasing problem in recent years, but with this ruling clearly stating parental responsibility for the actions of those deemed too young to be prosecuted, the courts hope that the matter will now either start to reduce, or those who share the liability and responsibility will now face the consequences of the actions of those in their care.

IMPROVED ARRANGEMENTS FOR COSTA VOTERS IN MAY LOCAL ELECTIONS CLARO PRESS RELEASE Not only are there difficulties for non-Spanish EU residents to register to vote in local and European Parliament elections. Those who do register, and turn out to vote on the day of the election, may find queues and, as we saw in 2011 in the middle of the day, they may have to wait up to an hour in the midday sun. To avoid a repetition of this situation, C.L.A.R.O. Councillor, Bob Houliston, presented a Motion in the full Council meeting (Plenary) at the end of February. The purpose of the Motion was to increase the number of voting stations and improve their geographic distribution. His Motion stated that in the last 8 years, the number of eligible voters in local elections in Orihuela Costa had doubled – up from just over 4,000 to over 8,000 in 2015. The number of voting stations, however, had not increased from the traditional three – the Playa Flamenca Town Hall, the nearby Civic centre and now the reading point in, for many, far away Calle Cipres in Lomas de Cabo Roig. Moreover, because of the extended nature of Orihuela Costa, some voters have to travel several kilometres to cast their votes. The average number of voters in each of Orihuela Costa’s three voting stations in last year’s European elections was over 2,300, more than the 2,000 maximum fixed by law. In Orihuela city and surrounding villages, the average number of voters per voting station ranges between 850 and 1,200. The solution proposed in the Motion was to have additional voting stations better dispersed in Orihuela Costa. In the debate on the Motion it was obvious that other parties would not vote against such a reasonable and democratic proposal and the Motion was passed unanimously. However, there were a number of grumbles about the procedure and responsibility for making the voting day arrangements. One startling fact which emerged in the debate was that the legal maximum of 2,000 voters per voting station only applies to the number of Spanish voters. The number of non-Spanish EU voters does not count. This is an incredible admission. In Orihuela Costa there are more EU registered voters than Spanish voters. Article 19.1 of the EU Treaty stipulates the rights of EU citizens resident in
another member state to vote and stand as candidates for municipal elections “under the same conditions as nationals of that State.” It is almost certainly a contravention of EU law that a legal maximum on the number of voters per voting station only applies to Spanish nationals. It is also illogical. Spanish voters as well as EU voters have to queue in the same queue to vote and they suffer the same consequences of this unfair provision of Spanish law. C.L.A.R.O. will certainly consider a complaint on the matter to the European Parliament. The fact that the Motion was passed unanimously did not convince C.L.A.R.O. that any action would result, especially since it emerged in the debate that the arrangements for 24 May would already have been agreed at the end of 2014 and that there would be the same traditional 3 voting stations in Orihuela Costa. Therefore, on 11 March, C.L.A.R.O. Councillor Bob Houliston visited the Alicante head of the Electoral Registration Office to check the situation. It was confirmed that in calculating the 2,000 maximum of voters per station, only Spanish voters counted. It was also confirmed that arrangements concerning the number of voting stations and the number of voting tables had been agreed with Orihuela Town Hall in December. However, Bob Houliston was told that if it was too difficult and too late to increase the number of voting stations, it would still be possible to increase the number of voting tables in voting stations which would speed up the voting procedure and reduce and possibly avoid having to queue to vote. However, only 3 to 4 days remained in which to consider a new proposal from OrihuelaTown Hall. The day after Bob Houliston’s discussion in Alicante, the Electoral Registration
Office and Orihuela Town Hall modified the December proposal and added 3 new voting tables in the two voting stations where the highest number of voters will vote: Playa Flamenca Town Hall and Calle Cipress in Lomas de Cabo Roig. This is a small but significant victory and all that is possible for the forthcoming local elections. The Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, will publicise the final detailed arrangements closer to the date of the election. Registered voters will also be informed in due course by post as to which voting station and which voting table they should go to on 24 May. C.L.A.R.O. hopes that with these improved arrangements, voters will be reassured that they should not be confronted with queues and the need to stand in the sun on the day of the election. We will need as big a turnout as possible on 24 May and a vote for those who will defend our interests. A stronger voice for Orihuela Costa in the new Town Council and in the next government in Orihuela is the only way the many improvements we need will be carried out.

THE LADY OF ELCHE MAY RETURN SOON Having opened the exhibition in Madrid in 2014, Carter explained that during the first two years of any archeological exhibition, it is not possible to transfer any part of a display. Although the bust is closely associated with the people of Elche, Carter also explained that “the rest of the country also loves her and wants to see her in the National museum.” Therefore, it is not possible for at least a year “for one part of the 13,000 piece permanent exhibition to move out of respect for visitors going to the newly opened museum and wanting to see the significant funds.” According to Carter, there are between 200 and 300 parts in the display that are more relevant and “cannot move together, they cannot even miss four or five of those pieces at a time”, so to
The director of the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid, Andrew Carter, has said that he considers it “reasonable” that within the next term of four years they will once again approve the relocation of the bust, “Dama de Elche”, for temporary exhibition to be held in the city of Elche, as had already happened in 2006. The statement was made during a visit to Alicante for the premiere of the exhibition of treasures from the Mercedes frigate, which is being held in the Provincial Archaeological Museum of the
Province of Alicante (MARQ). Carter explained he had “recently” met in Madrid with the mayor of Elche, Mercedes Alonso of the PP, who had requested a new temporary transfer of the statue. It is not immediately possible to find a time when this would be suitable, Carter had explained, but during the next term there would be a “reasonable time” to do so.
give the Dama de Elche would create a “hole” in the exhibition. La Dama de Elche is considered the masterpiece of Iberian period and has exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum since 1972, except for the 6-month loan in 2006. It was discovered by chance in the site of La Alcudia in 1897 by a farmer and was sold to a French archaeologist, which led her to the Paris Louvre museum before, in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II, she was moved to Castle Muntadau, near Toulouse. In 1941, negotiations between Spain and the Vichy government allowed her to be moved to Madrid's Museo del Prado, where she remained until 1970, when she was given to her new and current home.

COSTA BLANCA TO SHOW IN ABERDEEN The Costa Blanca Tourist Board has confirmed that a delegation from airport authority AENA will be attending the Routes Europe 2015 trade event which takes place in Aberdeen in April.
It is the first time that Costa Blanca´s airports have been represented at the event, aimed at showing Alicante-Elche airport as a viable option to connect Costa Blanca with the rest of the world. According to the spokesperson for the tourism board, Joaquín Albaladejo, the event is aimed at airlines and airports in order for the travel industry to seek new routes and destinations for their future operations. Albaladejo also said that the tourist board will accompany AENA in order to “present the Costa Blanca to airlines from around world” some of whom have already had meeting arranged to “discuss
the features that make the airport attractive, together with the situation”. In his opinion, the Costa Blanca is in a “proper, sweet and optimal” time to introduce air carriers to the “attractiveness” of the province, the “extraordinary” airport and the details that make Alicante “the province of Spain which probably has the largest number of international residents of various nationalities, which is an element of leverage for air connections of potential users”. Destinations such as Benidorm, Torrevieja, Altea, Denia, Calpe, Alicante and the Playas de Orihuela are all attractive destinations for tourists, and “are part of the potential as sun and beach tourism without forgetting the extraordinary potential of domestic tourism”, offering different types of products: food, health, business, shopping with the advantages that enhance the models of widely accepted tourism, such as hotel and residential, and business opportunities for airlines. RYANAIR TO START OPERA TIONS FROM CASTELLON
After announcing only 6 weeks ago that they were looking at all options, Low Costa Carrier Ryanair have now announced that they will soon be operating regular flights from UK, German and Swedish destinations into Castellon. Sources say that executives of the airline have made several visits to the airport to see the facilities first hand. First opened in March 2011, to date they have only hosted charter flights carrying football teams Villarreal and Barcelona. Castellon is perhaps the most infamous ‘white elephant’ littering the Spanish Landscape after the collapse of the country’s property bubble and the introduction of regular operations by the main budget airline in the world would be a quantum leap for the airport managed by Canadian multinational SNC-Lavalin. They say that their goal is the handling of 250 flights and 35,000 passengers this year which, in order to take advantage of the tourist traffic, they hope they can get underway as early as Easter. The announcement by Ryanair will have a major effect on a number of other airlines which it is understood are also considering the airport’s use The Irish airline has never hidden it’s interest in operating from Castellón, noting the clear tourism potential which they

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Techie Toys for Expats: Stay Smart with DNS As a newly arrived or intending expat, you will be given many pieces of advice; some will be useful, whilst it is best to ignore others. The best piece of advice is, of course, to learn the language, because by doing so you will add a new depth and valuable dimension to your new life in the sun. The second piece of advice that I often hear is to only watch TV and listen to radio in the language of your adopted country. In other words, forget 'Eastenders' and 'Strictly Come Dancing', in favour of some of the endless quiz and reality shows on Spanish television; I think not. I have come to the opinion that to remain in touch with the language and culture of birth is important, which helps to ease some of the lonelier and unsettling aspects of expat life, even if the sun is shining. So, in order to continue to enjoy watching 'Coronation Street' and 'Dr Who', and films in your home language, it is important to be able to watch television from your home country. One of the most frequent questions that I am asked by both would be and newly arrived expats is "Will I still be able to watch British television?" Although not strictly legal, the answer is "Yes, of course you will, and things are getting better all the time." However, you do need to be a little tech savvy to ensure that you are getting the best connection, and that doesn't necessarily mean spending a great deal of money on monthly TV contracts. When we first moved to Spain, the choice was either installing a large and expensive satellite dish, or having a baking tray kind of contraption strapped to the highest point of the building. Both systems worked, but were not always reliable, since providers and connections changed and, indeed, satellites moved to other positions, which required adjustments, upgrades and yet more expense. Over the last few years, things have moved on, and it is now perfectly possible to receive a good television signal from your Internet connection; indeed, it is now the preferred choice for many reasons. Watching television through your Internet connection doesn't mean sitting in front of your laptop all evening. We now have the option of purchasing Internet ready TVs, although my own personal preference is using a computer (in my case a Mac Mini) linked specifically to our main television for only Internet tel-
evision and film viewing. Of course, television programmes from the UK and other countries are blocked, to prevent them from being watched in other countries. However, there are many ways around this. Until recently, my preferred option has been the use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN), which basically tricks the television provider into thinking that you are in your home country. The signal is diverted to your home country and then forwarded back to the sender. Clearly, the downside of this process is that VPN reduces your signal by around 30 per cent, reducing picture quality or producing that maddening buffering, and spinning 'circle of death' that we all hate so much. In many parts of the Canary Islands where I live, and rural Spain, France, Italy and Portugal, Internet signals are very slow offering maybe only 3 to 10mbps. I am fortunate, since I now have a connection called VDSL (Very High Bit Rate DSL), which offers a speed of around 30mbps. Even so, I managed to get a decent signal on a speed of only 10mbps. It is important to shop around and obtain the highest speed possible. Try to request VDSL if a fibre optic connection is unavailable in your area; it is a little more expensive, but well worth it. Secondly, if you can afford it, dump the modem and router provided by your telecoms provider, since most are of the most basic quality and purchase the best, high-speed version modem/router that you can afford. It will be worth it in the long run, since speed is the key to success. My much-preferred option now is Smart DNS, which is simply a case of changing the DNS numbers on your computer or router. It sounds complicated, but isn't and full details of how to do this are given by the company providing the service. Smart DNS has the advantage of maintaining the full strength of your signal, which in areas with low Internet signal strength is highly important, but has the disadvantage of not being secure in the same way as VPN. My best advice is to get both, and then you can use Smart DNS to receive television programmes, access films etc., whilst using VPN for security and to hide your presence if, for instance, you are using your laptop in an Internet cafe to access your bank account. For space reasons, I cannot go into more details in this article, but you can find more information, as well as details about the companies and products that I use, on the Expat Survival section of my website. BRITISH-BUILT NISSANS SCORE AWARDS DOUBLE British manufacturing was the big winner as the Sunderland-built Nissan Qashqai crossover and Note family hatchback scooped top honours in the 2015 Carbuyer Awards. The multi-award winning Qashqai – the original crossover – was crowned Best SUV and 4x4 by the influential motoring website while the equipment laden Note was named the best car for under £150 a month. The models were judged by Carbuyer’s expert panel on the areas of most interest to real new car buyers, including running costs, practicality and reliability. Stuart Milne, Editor of Carbuyer, which gets more than 1.4 million unique visits a month, said: “The Nissan Qashqai is a comfortable SUV but it’s no more expensive to run or harder to drive than a hatchback. “It’s no surprise that the Qashqai is one of Britain’s most popular cars.” Of the Nissan Note, he added: “There are cheaper cars out there but none offers as much space, comfort and equipment as the Nissan Note. And all for less than £150 a month.”
James Wright, Managing Director of Nissan Motor (GB), said: “Both the Note and the Qashqai were designed, developed and built by Nissan here in the UK and so it’s great to have them recognised in this way by one of the nation’s leading motoring websites. “It’s now just over a year since the all-new Qashqai was launched to almost universal acclaim and the fact it’s still making waves, leading the way and winning awards is yet more evidence of what a fantastic car it really is.” For Carbuyer’s full reviews of the Nissan Qashqai and Nissan Note visit www.carbuyer.co.uk

CITIGO AND OCTAVIA ESTATE SHINE AS CARBUYER NAMES ITS TOP CARS OF 2015 FROM SKODA
The SKODA Citigo and Octavia Estate have secured yet more silverware courtesy of car review website CarBuyer. The online giant handed the Best First Car award to the Citigo and bestowed the honour of Best Tax-Exempt Car on the Octavia Estate. In a change to previous years, the CarBuyer judges looked at some of the most requested searches on its site, and chose these as the categories. Having won a number of CarBuyer awards in the past for its best in class models, SKODA also triumphed under the new procedure – reinforcing their overall appeal with buyers. Commenting on the Citigo’s award for Best First Car, CarBuyer Editor Stuart Milne said: “The Citigo is fun, sophisticated and cheap to buy and run. In the closely fought small-car market SKODA's reputation for great customer service sets it apart.” As many newly-qualified drivers have already discovered, the Citigo’s intuitive controls, great visibility and compact dimensions make it the ideal car for first-timers. To highlight this, SKODA is a partner in
the Young Driver programme – a scheme that provides driving lessons for children aged 11 to 17. With access to a fleet of Citigos, The Young Driver programme uses 30 specially designed training facilities across the country to give the next generation of drivers the best possible start to their driving careers. To date, more than 100,000 lessons have been delivered by instructors. At the other end of the size scale, CarBuyer also judged the Octavia Estate to be its Best Tax-Exempt Car, with Editor Stuart Milne saying: “The Octavia Estate is a big car with a massive boot, which makes it all the more incredible that some versions emit so little CO2 that they're free to tax.” A total of six models in the Octavia Estate range have CO2 outputs low enough (Band A – up to 100g/km) under to qualify for zero rated car tax. This includes the generously equipped Octavia SE Business GreenLine III (£21,170) that features Amundsen satellite navigation, acoustic parking sensors and alloy wheels.

GRANADA IN THE SPRING
The city of Granada was the last stronghold in Spain of the Muslim Moorish race who had controlled the Iberian Peninsula for all of 800 years. During their time in Spain they made the city of Cordoba, the largest and, with a population of one million people, the most populated city in the known world. Overlooking the city the Judas trees in bloom
They were educated people who built some of the worlds earliest universities. Under them medical research in particular blossomed. Then disaster, the city of Cordoba fell to the reconquering Christians. This event forced the Moors to move their seat of power to Granada. Determined to maintain the high standards by which they lived, they chose a site on a red coloured hillside to build what was to become one of the most famous Muslim built collection of Palaces in the western world. This was to become known as “The Alhambra Palaces”. The word Alhambra meaning “the red hill”. More Beautiful and ornate palaces are hard to imagine. The palaces were surrounded by beautiful gardens and many fountains. The Nasrid dynasty were the masters of all that they surveyed during the time that they lived
here in Granada. Even today the city enjoys the feel of its powerful Moorish Past. The market area in the centre of the city has the Moorish horse shoe shaped doors. The narrow cobbled streets that you would associate with the Kasbah lead into bright leafy squares with tinkling fountains. The people here are olive skinned with big soft brown eyes. They sing throaty melancholy songs which tell the story of their exotic past. In the caves fiery dancers in flamenco dresses stomp arrogantly, throwing their hands in the air, pained looks on their faces as they stamp, pout and pose to the sounds of strumming Spanish guitars. Viewing points in the heights of the Albaicin, where the old Moorish and Jewish districts merged overlook the Alhambra palaces. Below this point you can see the powerful outline of the mighty cathedral placed there by the Catholic Monarchs Isabel and Ferdinand when their troops finally ended moorish control in Spain with the capture of Granada in the year 1492. They took the city from the Moors, but they couldn’t take the Moors from the city. The spirit of these exotic exciting people still lingers in the streets, palaces, squares and caves of this magnificent city. A summer visit finds the city at its most vibrant. David’s Coachtrips SL offer a great deal. Using a four star city hotel (bed and breakfast) which is close to everywhere you would want to

STERLING TWO FACED, GAINING GROUND AGAINST THE EURO BUT WEAKENING AGAINST THE DOLLAR. Sterling continued its recent trend on Friday, reaching the highest level in eight years against the euro, whilst falling further away against the US dollar following a better-thanexpected US jobs report. Having enjoyed a period of gaining ground against the US dollar, sterling lost over three cents last week and is close to 1.50, a key support level. The week ahead is a quiet week for UK data releases following a very busy week last week. Manufacturing production figures on Wednesday are the first major data release of the week. With dipping
growth seen recently in the UK, a positive reading here could see sterling gain ground. With little important data set to be released from elsewhere, attention will be turned to the US for retail sales and inflation data towards the end of the week. Euro under pressure which is set to continue It was a difficult week for the euro as it remained under pressure after European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi confirmed last Thursday that the ECB will begin purchasing Eurozone government bonds as from today under the new quantitative easing program. The
euro managed to fall even further against its major peers on Friday and hit new multi-year lows as the euro suffered from impressive nonfarm payrolls data from the USA. For the week ahead it is a quieter week for Eurozone data; on Thursday we have industrial production, expected to improve to 0.3%, in comparison to the previous month’s figure of 0%. Other than this release, the euro will have to sit tight and try and ride out the difficult climate that it is currently facing. US Dollar- Up, up and away The US dollar continued to strengthen on Friday against the majority of its peers. The spotlight was on the non-farm employment data, and rightly so as the employment change increased against expectations. Unemployment in the US also dropped to 5.5%, a record low since June 2008. Average hourly earnings were down, but this did not have too much of an impact due to the ‘shock’ figure of the employment change; the US Federal Reserve will still keep a keen eye on this figure leading up to the future interest rate decisions. A quiet start to the week for the US dollar is expected with minimal data releases. Wednesday sees the release of the bank stress test results, which applies a specific market condition to see how banks will cope with that pressure. We can expect a bit of movement on Thursday due to the release of core retail sales figures, and the weekly labour data from the US. On Friday we have inflation figures in the form of a Producer Price Index, as well as consumer confidence data, which has been a very positive figure for the US as of late. US dollar dominant The Canadian dollar had a weak finish to the week as it dropped to levels of almost two-week lows against its US counterpart. This was largely due to Statistics Canada reporting that the trade deficit widened to C$2.45 billion in January from C$1.22 in December. Experts had expected trade balance to swing into a surplus of C$0.3 billion in January. Elsewhere, Friday was a slim day for data realises. The Australian dollar moved up slightly against the US dollar in the anticipation of nonfarm payroll data out of the US. However it then lost this ground following the release, as the outcome was much better than initially expected.

SPRIN G FORWARD WITH 10 SLEEP TIPS When we spring forward to daylight saving time, we lose an hour of sleep. Most of us feel the effect for a few days afterward. Use these 10 sleep tips to help you spring forward easily and sleep better all year long. 1. Gradually Transition Into the Time Change To minimize the impact of the switch to daylight saving time, make gradual adjustments. Go to bed and put your children to bed 15 minutes early, starting several days before the change. Make an extra effort to be well-rested the week before the time change. 2. Give Yourself a Sleep Break After the Time Change If you feel sleepy after the change to daylight saving time, take a short nap in the afternoon -- not too close to bedtime. Avoid sleeping in an hour longer in the mornings. Your internal clock will adjust on its own in several days. 3. Know How Much Sleep You Need Not everyone needs the same amount of sleep to be well-rested, and sleep requirements can change with age. To find your ideal number of hours, sleep without an alarm on weekends and see when you wake up naturally. 4. Keep Regular Sleep Hours Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. This helps your body regulate its sleep pattern and get the most out of the hours you sleep. If possible, wake up at the same time on the weekends, too, which makes Monday mornings easier to bear. You can also see how a nap affects your sleep quality. For some, napping can make night time sleeping harder; but for others, a short nap (20 minutes) can be
revitalizing, without ruining their night's sleep. 5. Get Some Exercise During the Day Even moderate exercise, such as walking, can help you sleep better.
23
Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise, three times a week or more. If you often don't sleep well, try not to exercise too close to bedtime. 6. Avoid Stimulating Substances Alcohol and caffeine (found in coffee, tea, chocolate, and some pain relievers) can interfere with sleep. If you have trouble sleeping, avoid alcohol and caffeine for 4 to 6 hours before bedtime. Smokers should also avoid tobacco, another stimulant, too close to bedtime. 7. Eat Lightly at Night Indigestion from spicy or fatty food or having too much food in your stomach can cause insomnia. For a better night's sleep, eat light, simple foods several hours before bed. If you get hungry, have a snack of easy-to-digest food such as carbohydrates or dairy. Also, avoid too much liquid before bed so that you don't have to wake up to go to the toilet. 8. Relax Before Bed Stress and overstimulation can make it hard to fall asleep. Try to avoid intense television programs or movies before bed. Relax with a soothing, warm bath and curl up with a book instead. Worry boosts production of the stress hormone cortisol, which makes you more alert. If anxiety keeps you awake, write out your schedule for the following day before going to bed, including possible solutions to challenges you may face. If you're worried about hitting a deadline the next day, go to bed early and wake up early to work. Don’t work late into the night. Your mind needs the rest. You may even need less time to finish your work. 9. Create a Sleep-Friendly Environment Try sleep shades, earplugs, a white-noise machine, or all three. Temperature helps, too: 60-75 degrees is considered the most comfortable. Also, you need a comfortable mattress. If you have restless or snoring pets, keep them out of your room, along with all electronics, including your television, computer, DVD player, and stereo. Save your bedroom for sleep, sex, and relaxing. 10. Get Up if You Can't Sleep We've all had those nights when we can't fall asleep or we wake up and can't get our minds to shut down. Avoid watching the clock, which can create more anxiety. If you've been awake more than 20 minutes, get up, go to another room, and do something relaxing to help you get drowsy. Keep the lights low, have some warm milk, read a book, or write about whatever may be on your mind until your eyelids get heavy.

EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB
On Saturday the club rinks final was played, it was a close run battle, though with not a spot of blood spilled. Jim Gracie, Irene Thomson, Malc Sykes and Eddie Thomson came away winners, after a very close match, won with just one wood to spare. Gallant losers were Margaret Odell, Keith Cunningham (substituting for Ron Odell), Sheila Cooper and Carolyn Harris. Sunday found us entertaining the touring club from Milton Campsie, we all had great fun with some good bowls, splendid company all round. On Monday morning The Broncos travel to Country Bowls to play The Flamingos and were not shamed although not bringing away a point. We played some good bowls, but the home team as always, had mat experience, which they used to full advantage. Tuesday brought further club finals with Jane and Stew Hamill competing with Jim Gracie and Carolyn Harris in the mixed pairs. Stewart & Jane won, both playing very well and proving to be the stronger on the day.In the afternoon playing in the mixed trips were John Skipper with June and David Whitworth against Jim Gracie with Irene and Eddie Thomson, who were the successful team after a tough battle. On Thursday the ladies pairs took place with June Whitworth and Jane Hamill competing with Sheila Cooper and Carolyn Harris. June & Jane took the day 14–10, in a match that was very close all the way through. Friday afternoon found The Mustang playing at La Marina against The Dolphins, with very good play all round, coming away with 2 rinks which is always a fair result away from home. Maxine Wright, Gary Newson and Rod Wright 3-34. Richard Needham, David Haynes and David Whitworth 19-10. Sheila Cooper, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris 10-19. Jim Gracie, Irene Thomson and Eddie Thomson 13-16. June Whitworth, Keith Cunningham and Stew Hamill 22-17. Ron Odell, Brian Taylor and Margaret Odell 8-27. By StJohn Broadhurst Three home games last week and the first visitors to the Valle on Monday, 9 March were El Rancho Broncos who were the Flamingos opponents in a SABA Discovery league match. It proved to be an excellent mornings bowling for the Flamingos with a clean sweep to take all the points, which moved the Flamingos up to third in the league. Celebrating the wins were Sandra McIlroy, Ray Emmett and Peter Dix 29-6. Doreen Statham, Pat Emmett and Trish Dix 22-15. Carole Donnellan, Del Gunning and Karen Kirk 21-17. Ben Noke, Dennis Birkett and Peter Whitehall 24-15. Andy White, Les Turner and StJohn Broadhurst 29-13. Pat Patton, Bryan Kirk and Brian Patton 20-9. Overall shots Flamingos 145 (14 pts) Broncos 75 (0 pts). Second visitors to the Valle were San Miguel Choctaws who played the Clarets on Thursday, 12 March in a Federated Fours match. The Choctaws proved too strong for the Clarets who could only manage a draw on one rink thanks to Carole Donnellan, Andy White, Dennis Birkett and Peter Whitehall 15-15. Overall shots Clarets 38 (1 pt) Choctaws 76 (7 pts). And finally on Friday, 13 March the Ramblers welcomed La Marina Sharks to the Valle for the final game of the season in the CBBA Southern league. It proved to be lucky thirteen for the Sharks who won on four rinks as well as the long game. Winning for the Ramblers were Del Gunning, Bryan Kirk and Karen Kirk 20-11. Pat Patton, Billy Price and Brian Patton 18-6. Overall shots Ramblers 75 (4 pts) Sharks 126 (10 pts). It proved to be a tough season for the Ramblers in the top flight but the team made their opponents fight hard for every point and I’m sure they will give a good account of themselves next year in the second division. Also a big thanks to the team captain Peter Dix and his deputy Andy White for their hard work during the season, which is quite often taken for granted. Well done guys.

GREENLANDS BC STATEMENT The owner of Greenlands Bowls Club, would like to refute an alleged message on Facebook, stating that Greenlands is closing on 31 august 2015. This is completely untrue, as Greenlands will be functioning as normal, and continuing to welcome any new bowlers to the club.

EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON PAIRS K.O. CUP QUALIFIERS – 12 MARCH 2015 Que Pasa - Paul Dowington, Ray Harvey, Peter O´Rourke Busters - Simon Williams, Joe Miller, Joe Hawkins Ale House - Pat Abrams, Lee Maiden, Paul Durrant Sporting Life - Del Kingsbury, Alex Nikolov, Graham Todd
Busters Hyenas Meerkats Meerkats
Four qualifiers to compete in semi-finals on 30th April After last week´s disappointing show in the Pairs Meerkats succeeded in getting both their triples through in this week´s qualifier. Pat Abrams & Co. will be a tough draw for any of the other trios, but currently Joe Miller is playing some great darts and if Alex Nikolov, who plays a little hot and cold, carries through this week´s standard of play his team will be contenders. Pairs qualifiers Paul Dowington and Peter O´Rourke added Ray Harvey to their team and also got through from Que Pasa. All in all a strong semi final line up for April 30th. Everyone of the 12 players can play a bit, each team having a player consistently nailing the treble 20. However, as we all know its “scores for show and doubles for dough” which makes one triple slight favourites over the other three. I will let you make your own minds up. This week we are back to league formalities with just four matches to play. Barring broken limbs etc Breakaways will win Division 2, but second spot is very much open. Anyone of the chasing four teams can take runners up with three of them, Kestrels, Jaguars and Tavern all having occupied second place at some time during the season. Kestrels have a two point advantage over the Jaguars, but the Tavern, who are three points behind the Kestrels have a far superior leg difference, which could prove crucial at the finish. Jaguars and Misfits don’t have to play the Breakaways and therefore may well capitalise when their opponents have the pleasure of doing so. Very tight, no favourites on this one. In Division 1 the Hyenas are keeping their fingers crossed hoping the Meerkats drop a point or may be even lose one of the three matches to play before they play each other in the final game of the season. If that happens, it will be bedlam at the Hub with the possibility of the league being decided on leg difference, should the Hyenas win the final game. It has happened before when Rendezvous took the title from Meerkats on leg difference after finishing all square. Whatever happens the Hyenas will be looking for silverware in the shape of the KO cap on 23rd April when they face holders Meerkats at the Porter
LEADER By Paul Durrant
House. Unbeaten in six seasons in Qualifiers for Busters, Paul Dowington, this competition Meerkats will be Peter O´Rourke, Ray Harvey reluctant to let go of the prestigious trophy. If the Hyenas fire on all cylinders they are a real handful, the likes of Nick Spicer, Shaun Smith, Joe Miller and all will take some beating. In the first to seven legs it will be close, my prediction is 7-5 either way. On the same date at Busters Porter House play Pint Depot Kings for the K.O. Plate. Judging by the league table your money would go on the Porters, Kings still looking for a league victory with their only wins coming via the Plate. But with a different format i.e. triples the Kings have several decent players to take on the likes of Peter Ayres, Sid Cross and Ray Hayes etc. Some rallying of troups from Ian Sleath and the game will be close. Back to this week´s triples and the Busters qualifiers of Hyenas Miller, Williams and Hawkins. Despite losing their last game of the “Round Robin” format to Kestrels Alan Preston, Chris Miles and Russ Lyness, their superior leg difference got them through. Preston excelled in the qualifier for the ¨Robin¨ scoring 3 tons plus a double, Miles aiding and abetting with a ton and D4. Both players did the damage in the concluding match defeat of the Hyenas, Lyness coming in with D9. Miles got the first leg on D16 after Miller had scored 2x100 and a 140. A further ton and 123 from Miller in the third also went begging as Lyness took the game on D9. The fancied trio of Sid Cross, Yvonne Rouffignac and Brian Nash won two of their three matches, Cross unlucky not to finish 153, wiring the D18 after T20,T19, but nevertheless accounting for all his team´s winning doubles, including a D6,D4 when requiring 20 points. The Porters 2-0 defeat by Hyenas cost them dearly as both teams had two wins and one defeat.
At the Sporting Life Del Kingsbury´s trio came through unbeaten with wins of 2-1, 2-0 and 2-0. A fine display of arrows from Alex Nikolov in their first match versus Peter Ayres and the Sandersons, Ray and Sue won them the game. A 140,100,121 and D6 followed by 180 and a 140 in the next two legs, Kingsbury taking out 48 on D8 just edged out the Porters who had taken the middle leg via Ayres on D8. Porters went on to win their next two matches the first against Tracey Simpson, Simone de Lacy and Hilda Wilkinson, Ray Sanderson taking out both doubles, Ayres recording 2x100 and 85. Captain Sanderson really went to town in their other victory over Jak Doggatt, Jon Peters and Luke Nicholls, scoring 121,100,140,85, wife Sue taking out the first double, Ayres the winner plus a ton. Kingsbury took out both doubles in their game playing the Evolution triple, both Nikolov and Todd supporting well scoring wise. The Jaguars trio of Simpson, de Lacy and Wilkinson needed to beat the Meerkats qualifying trio Lee Maiden, Paul Durrant, Pat Abrams Meerkats 2-0 to force a count back
in the final match. Kingsbury´s team however proved too strong as Nikolov took the first on D4 after a ton, Todd wrapping things up on D16, Kingsbury taking the doubles back seat but scoring 2x100 and 95. At the Ale House Karl Cooper won the bull against Pat Abrams, but that was all the Misfits won in the first match despite a 133 from Leah Chesworth, plus a couple of 80 pluses from Sonya Cooper and son Karl. Maiden took both doubles on D2 and D10 plus a ton and three 80+ scores. Karl Mallinson, Berney Whipday and Luke Yarnold won their opener against Pat Schofield, Wendy Hayward and Lisa Ivill 20, both doubles going the way of Yarnold, all three scoring well. The Ale House trio went straight back on with high expectations that didn’t materialise; Karl Cooper hitting D16 and D1 supported by some great scoring from Sonya Cooper and Chesworth. A good all round performance from the Meerkats saw off the challenge from the Jaguars, Abrams hitting the centre for throw but Maiden and Durrant doing the scoring and sharing the doubles. The Jaguars stayed on to face the Misfits in the penultimate game, Chesworth winning the bull and taking the first leg on D3, despite some great scoring from Schofield who continued her form in the second with 123 and D8 to level. The Misfits got off to a good start in the decider and kept their lead, Chesworth polishing off D4 for the match. Everything rested on the result of the last match between Meekats and Ale House. A win from Mallinson´s trio would mean a three way tie that included the Misfits. Tons from Maiden and Durrant were wasted as Mallinson nailed the first double, Yarnold opening with a ton in the second. The Kats response was emphatic, a 140 and 98 from Abrams, a ton from Maiden, a 140 and D20 from Durrant. Two 80 pluses from the useful Yarnold just wasn’t enough as Abrams hit a ton, Durrant finding the T20 with 140,100,137 plus the all important D2 for qualification. Finishing School Question: Should you ever consider a two double finish with two darts in your hand? Answer: Yes. The first time I saw the feat in a pro match was Rod Harrington v. Ronnie Baxter in the World Match Play final, Blackpool. Baxter was on a double to win the title, Harrington wanted 125. His first dart found T15 (S15 leaving 110, - T20, bull). Requiring 80, Harrington plumped for two double tops and got them both. His reasoning being the double was easier to hit than the treble. It worked and he went on to win the Match Play title.

TORRY GRAB HARD EARNED POINT CD CASTELLON ..........0 CD TORREVIEJA .........0 Torry made the long journey up to Castellon last Fri night, due to local fiestas on the weekend, and must be satisfied at returning with a useful point. Although currently sitting in 2nd place, Castellon must be favorites for promotion to div 2b. Over 6,000 fans watched this 3rd div battle, inside the impressive Nuevo Castalia Stadium, the vast majority being local fans. Back in October, when Torry won 4 out of 4, Castellon were beaten 1-0 at Vicente Garcia Stadium, but the teams fortunes have since changed dramatically. A 2-2 in their last league outing at Ontinyent, had given Torry hope of stopping a terrible run of results, and this point must further add to their confidence. In all honesty, Torry fought a backs to the wall battle, and had it not been for their ever reliable keep-
er Oscar, they would have been well beaten. A l a r g e l y uneventful 1st half, saw the hosts go close with a long range shot, which just cleared the cross bar. They also had a goal bound effort cleared off the line, and in the dying seconds, struck a header against the post. Oscar came into his own during the 2nd half, when he thwarted wave after wave of attacks, especially late on, as he pulled off a magnificent double save. Burguilos, Cesar, Adrian and Berna were all booked for Torry, whilst Castellon had 2 of their own also shown yellow cards. Torry line up: OSCAR, VICENT, ALEXIS, RUBEN, EDDIE (CESAR 44), BURGUILOS, BORJA, ADRIAN, CORELLA (JUANRA 80), BERNAN (CRISTIAN 85), OBELE

It has been a busy start to 2015 for Rojales NC. Firstly, in early February, they travelled up to Valencia to compete against teams from Madrid and Valencia. They played some outstanding netball with excellent results right up until the final game when they were pipped to the winner's podium by Madrid A in an 11-8 thriller. So far this month they have played against Murcia and both Rojales A and B teams were victorious. And last Sunday they travelled down to La Manga to take on a newly formed team. Rojales pressured La Manga throughout the game and came away with an empathetic win of 52-11. There's still more to come as Rojales will be travelling to Madrid in May when they will be looking for revenge for their earlier defeat; and then on 20 June they will be playing host to the other Spanish Clubs in what should be a very competitive end of season
tournament. If you are interested in playing netball come along to the Norwegian School in Quesada on a Tuesday from 7pm-8.30pm or for further details call Tracey on 679539995. Rojales Netball Club would like to thank Rojales Town Hall for their continued support. Team kits sponsored by Lyndyloo in Spain Bridal wear in La Zenia.
ESTRELLA DAMM CRIBBAGE March 9th and week 24 and those intrepid members of Dorothy’s Magpies still dominate in 1st position by 4 points. Will their luck hold out? This week at Mr Smiths it was Martin & John who saved the day for the Magpies with 3 wins while for Alan’s Robins Louise & Nigel were best with 2 wins. Still in 2nd place are Ron’s Voles after a close win at home to Peter’s Galleon whose pair of Alan & Odette maximised with 3 wins while 2 of the Voles pairs had 2 wins each. In 3rd place on their own are Brian’s Jaguars who just squeezed a win against Paul’s Catorce whose best were Brian & Mary with 2 wins while Shelagh & Basil topped the night with 3 wins. Dropping down 1 place are Richard’s Ospreys who narrowly lost to Ayliff’s Da Vinci’s who had 2 pairs with 2 wins while only Richard & Molly could manage 2 wins for the Ospreys. Over at Lo Crispin Brian’s Galea won 2 of the last 3 games to claim a close win against Mick’s Taverners whose best were Mick & Carol with 2 wins against Dave & Tom for Galea with 3 wins. Meanwhile it was a sad night for my Falcons as we could only provide 2 pairs and subsequently lost 2-7 to a buoyant Les’s Jays who had Jim & John with 3 wins while only Bill and Sue scored 2 for us. Mike’s Peacock’s triumphed against Jim’s Sharks who had Hilary & Peter maximising on 3 wins while 2 pairs for the Peacocks hit back with 2 wins each to win the game. Last but not least at Rojales, Steve’s Steakhouse triumphed against Keith’s Merlins whose 3 pairs had a miserable 1 win each while the Steakhouses 3 pairs looked good with 2 wins each.

ROCKETS GOLF SOCIETY AT ALTORREAL
(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Is this on course behaviour acceptable? When in full flow the worlds best golfers are awesome and provide the viewing public to some wonderful golf and memories. However when things go 'off kilter' we see another side to the mega rich and pampered golfers and whether they should be role models for young golfers or if they are just people earning a living is a debate held in many a clubhouse bar. Although the problem appeared to start with Tiger Woods the continual sight of the worlds best golfers SPITTING their way around a golf course is something I personally don't want to see. Last week in a world championship event in the USA we saw the sight of Rory McIlroy throwing his club into the water on the final hole in temper and in the final round almost did the same thing again after hitting the 'aqua' twice on the final hole. Now I know that a frogman went into the water and retrieved the club which will now be auctioned for worthy cause raising much need money BUT we should not have seen this attitude on the golf course? You will recall that Rory McIlroy 'lost his game' previously when on the verge of marriage to a tennis player and now appears to have done the same again following an legal 'off course' battle with a former manager. Who says that golf psychologists are not needed to keep golfers focused on the right things mentally and to avoid them bringing off course issues onto the course with them. Back to the subject of how to behave on the course the new generation of golfers would be advised to take a leaf from the Jack Nicklaus book of good behaviour who despite being ridiculed as a 'fat kid' when joining the tour when challenging public favourite Arnold Palmer for golfing titles put all this to one side to become not only the best golfer ever to play the game but also a true and modest gentleman on the course. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. 23 players turned out to play this Championship course and for the Silver category it turned out to be just that! No player managed to reach 30 points, Our field is always divided equally into 2 categories by handicap, so the players with mid-teens handicap can find themselves in Gold or Silver, depending on who plays on that particular day, in this case one of our Norwegian members came in disappointed that he had played in the “Silver” category, that was until he found out that he had won the category with just 29 points. Local member Gerd Cromm also had handicap issues, stating that the German Federation had given him a shot back due to severe injuries to his ankle. Well it’s just as well that the handicap secretary didn’t have time to change his handicap, because it would have come straight back down after he returned the best score of the day with 40 points ! Full results: Gold category 1st G.Cromm, 40 points; 2nd N. Spaniol 34 points and 3rd C. Grey 34 points. Silver category: 1st Sverre Sonesen 29 pts. 2nd Alex Goslan 27 pts. 3rd Per Skarnes 26 pts. The N.T.P. winners were: hole 6 Gunnel Thunstrom, hole 9 Karin Alm, she also put her name on the 13th by mistake so no prize here and the difficult 17th went to Steve Higgins. The week was started off with a pleasant Texas Scramble which proved to be a very tight affair with only 0.2 of a shot covering the first 3 teams. The winners with a score of 59.9 were Olga Douglas, Anne Marie Weisheit, Reg Akehurst and Terry Field. The unlucky team just beaten by 0.1 were Alan Douglas, Donna Campbell, Mike Chapman and Brian Dent. Wednesday saw us compete for one of our major trophies, the Caja Murcia Trophy. It was a great day for golf and the winning score from Alan Douglas reflected this when he came in with a superb 42 pts. The photo shows Alan receiving his trophy from Vice President Tom Hardie and Social Secretary Dee Biggerstaff. The veteran bandit Reg Akehurst came up on the rails again for second place with a very good 39 pts. The full results were: 1. Alan Douglas 42 pts, 2. Reg Akehurst 39 pts, 3. Tom Hardie 37 pts, 4. Benedicte Kruse 36 pts. Nearest pin on par 3s. 6. Terry Field, 10. Terry Cullen, 12. John Collins, 14. Benedicte Kruse 2s Club. Tom Hardie, Geoff Biggerstaff and John Collins. On Friday we had an away day at Villamartin. It is always nice to get away to another course and I am sure everyone would be impressed with the greens. Scoring was tough with none of our members beating par. The par 3s were very difficult and there were no 2s in the 2s Club. The results of our Stableford comp. were: 1. Olga Douglas 35 pts, 2. Donna Campbell 34 pts(c/b), 3. Heinz Lei 34 pts, 4. Geoff Biggerstaff 31 pts.

TMGS AT LA FINCA - 11 MARCH Forty golfers turned up on a very bright and sunny morning to find the course in very good condition and it is so apparent that the new Greenkeeper has grabbed this course by the balls and sorting it out. Surprisingly, even though we were 40 strong, it didn’t take too long to get round in a decent time. Only 3 players either achieved or bettered their handicaps and one will be “enjoying” a very nice cut to his handicap. The Two’s Pot was a very healthy 27€ and only one member achieved a 2 and this was Norbert Spaniol at the 13th. Three of the NTP’s were claimed and the recipients of a sleeve of Srixson Soft Feels were guest Ulf Berthag, Joe Dean and Les Wilton. Ulf also won the Best Guest award with 33 points, one point ahead of our German guest Ludwig Mutter on 32 points. The Silver Division was a fairly tight affair and Les Wilton’s 30 points was enough for 4th spot. We had two tying on 31 points and Alan Rickers took the runner-up slot due to the “lower handicap” system we now employ. This meant Alex Goslan came in 3rd. However, a long way in front was Sverre Sonesen with a nice 36 points. The Gold crew didn’t really score much better and it only needed 32
points for Dag Lovas and Andy Mills to take 4th and 3rd. Gerd Cromm’s 36 points was only enough for second spot as Norbert Spaniol’s very tasty 41 points took the spoils and top score of the day. Enjoy your new handicap Norbert! CAFE UNO GOLF SOCIETY 29 members turned out to play at Vistabella Golf. The course was in good condition and the greens were fast, although some of the scores don't reflect this. The final of our 2014 match play tournament was also played today between Ali Rich and Dave Harwood. The match was a close game through to the last couple of holes where Dave managed to win by 2 and 1. Well done to both players in getting through to the final. QUESADA GOLF SUPER LEAGUE ALICANTE GOLF 2ND MARCH 2015 Match 5. This is the last match of another historic season. Once again we are coming to a gripping conclusion. The front runners San Miguel A look as if they will take it in their stride once again. Hot on their heels is The Sportsman Golf Society, but they need to win every single match and take the bonus points to win the league. Is this a step too far? We shall see. Rumours have it that the course is not in its usual excellent condition. This we was to find in as much as the tee boxes needed some urgent maintenance but the greens were still in good condition. The babies, Claptons Golf, were playing San Miguel B,it didn’t seem as though they would be able to lift themselves off of the bottom, although once again they fielded an excellent team. The weather was bright and sunny and we set off at 9.30 on the 1st and 10th. It was soon evident that things were not going the Sportsman’s way but there was still plenty of time to pull the shots back. In the end, as we thought, it was just too much to expect Sportsmans to win every match and be this years winners. As you can see from the results San Miguel A ran away with a clean sweep making them once again the league winners. Congratulations to them and their team and hope for their continued support with the league also San Miguel B, Mini Golf Society and Claptons. Our thanks to Tracy and her staff at The Galleon for an excellent meal after the match. We look forward to seeing all the teams next season. To all the Club Captains please remember the Summer Competition is booked for the 29th June at Font de Llop. We are assured by the management that the course will be in excellent condition for this annual competition. Please remember this is also open to all friends and other golf societies that wish to take part providing they have a current handicap . Last season we had two guests from outside the league societies and look forward to welcoming any other guests that would like to play. Ian, Andy and Mike would like to thank all the teams for their continued support. Information on the league for any new teams that wish to compete in the league starting in October, and for the Supper Competition, please email Ian on:quesadagolfleague@hotmail.com. LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY AT ALICANTE A beautiful morning greeted members and guests on arrival at Alicante golf course. However, for one member it wasn’t such a good start as it took him two hours to locate the course. In defence it was his first trip and, as we all know, the signage isn’t the best. The usual coffee and tostada was provided in a local café as the restaurant was unavailable. The location was quite a sun trap and breakfast was enjoyed while the draw took place. The game was a Stableford competition and, with the exception of one or two players, the scores were below par. The course wasn’t up to its usual standard but it was felt that, once the growing season started in earnest, the works that had been carried out over the last month or so would come to fruition Results Nearest the Pin: Hole 3 Tim Ruse, Hole 6 Barry Thorogood, Hole 12 Barry Martin, Hole 17 Steve Warner Silver Division 35 points Pete Wootton Gold Division 29 points Tim Ruse After the uneventful trip home, everyone enjoyed a buffet supplied by

Paolo and Helen at La Marina Sports Centre. The draw was held for the Annual Matchplay Championship amid much heckling. Good natured of course! Our next game is at Alenda on March 19th with a first tee time of 11.20a.m.
