CLARO - BASED ON HONESTY AND EFFICIENT GOVERNMENT On 17 March, C.L.A.R.O. President Bob Houliston and members of the C.L.A.R.O. Executive Committee presented to the press “C.L.A.R.O. ORIHUELA”, a group of supporters of the C.L.A.R.O. political party from Orihuela city and neighbouring villages (the pedanías). This group, comprising people of different professions and experiences, believes that C.L.A.R.O. has a future, not only in the Orihuela Costa but
also in Orihuela city and neighbouring villages. The political situation in Orihuela has become increasingly confused with division in the Popular Party and fragmentation among parties of the left. Pedro Mancebo has announced that he is standing down from front line politics and his party, Centro Liberal Renovador (CLR), has still not clearly stated that they will contest the local elections in May. New parties are emerging which will further confuse the situation. Continued on Page 2

Continued From Page 1 In this context, C.L.A.R.O’s image and reputation as a nonideological party from neither the left nor the right, formed by those living in Orihuela Costa to correct deficiencies in the political management of the coast and based on principles of honesty and efficient government, has attracted increasing support in Orihuela and surrounding villages. After several months of contact and participation in C.L.A.R.O. open meetings on the coast, an impressive number of influential people publicly announced in the press conference their support for C.L.A.R.O. and their commitment to campaign

said he was convinced that with C.L.A.R.O. Orihuela and C.L.A.R.O. on the coast the party could elect a sufficient number of councillors to ensure that the next government of Orihuela , which will inevitably be another coalition, should be honest and efficient and would run the municipality on a de-centralised basis, close to the people. A decentralised form of government is the only way in which a municipality with such a diverse population and so geographically dispersed could be governed fairly. The Orihuela-based Spanish press gave good and fair coverage to the presentation of

NO MORE SCRAP Spain has become the first EU country to introduce a reuse requirement for escrap following last month's approval of
its transposition of the 2012 WEEE Directive. The law sets a target of 2% for domestic white goods and 3% for small devices such as IT and telecoms equipment to be prepared for reuse from January 2017, increasing to 3% and 4% respectively from August 2018. Larger electrical and electronic equipment outlets must accept very small devices from consumers without levying a charge and without requiring them to purchase another item in return. Officials in Spain expect that this move will stimulate job creation in the repair niche, creating thousands of jobs in a sector that already employs 27% of the entire country´s workforce.

ROJALES MAYOR HELPS WITH RESCUE OF ABANDONED PONY
A pony found tangled in ropes and wandering along the river in Rojales has been rescued with the help of Rojales mayor Antonio Perez. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre at Rojales was alerted to the case on March 1 by a member of the public, who spotted the abandoned pony and untangled her before calling police. In a stroke of luck, Mayor Perez and several councillors were out on a women's solidarity walk in the same area and quickly offered to help find the pony. The pony was eventually located and, after gaining police permission, Sue and Rod Weeding collected the pony and brought her back to their Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, where she will live permanently. We have named her Antonia in honour of the Mayor and for all the help he has given the Rescue Centre. The centre now cares for more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys saved from abuse and neglect. Donations and sponsorships to help continue this important work are gratefully welcomed. Every cent donated or spent in the rescue centre's network of eight charity shops across the Alicante province goes toward the feeding and care of these animals. Donations of furniture, clothing and bric-a-brack to stock the shops are welcome. Please call 652 021 980 for more information about furniture pick-ups
and volunteering. A fund raising event has been organised by Roger Drew from the Campoverde Reef Band for the Rescue Centre on Saturday 21st March at the New Asturias restaurant Punta Prima. Doors open at 7.30pm, tickets â‚Ź5.00 each. There will be a bar, and food is available in the ground floor restaurant. You can reserve your ticket at any of the Easy Horse Care charity shops, at the restaurant or at http://reefband.yolasite.com. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre opens to the public for free on the first Sunday of every month from 1pm to 4pm. The first horse tour begins at 2pm. Carrots and apples welcome. The centre is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga, 59. For more information and details on how to sponsor horses, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net.

PP TRAIL IN THIRD A poll in last Sunday’s El País shows differing fortunes for the two new parties, Podemos and Ciudadanos. The question asked by the pollsters was if you were going to vote today who would you vote for? Podemos remain ahead but slip over five points from 27.7% to 22.5%. The PSOE see more support after two months of heavy falls and rises from 18.3% to 20.2% taking over second place from the Partido Popular who fall from 20.9% to 18.6% and only cling on to third by 0.2% as on 18.4 is the party seeing most growth in support Ciudadanos.

MORE AWARDS AT CAMPOVERDE CANINE CLUB Sponsored by “Design a Right” Established in Spain in July 2000 The Campoverde Canine Club is still going strong teaching dogs (and their owners) in all aspects of obedience, with plenty of fun along the way. The new classes will begin very shortly. The final examinations have taken place at the training ground of the C.C.C. in Campoverde. The results from the Basic Class showed that the winner was Alison MacTavish (all the way from Bonny Scotland) and Magnus, her cross Schnauzer / Terrier. Well done to you both for scoring 108.5 marks out of 110. Patience and perseverance works wonders. Such a shame that you were unable to be at the presentation in person, still, your trophy and certificate will be waiting for you when we meet up for your entry into the Intermediate class. In second place was Neelam Darar and her Cocker Spaniel “Indy”, scoring 106.3 marks. The Intermediate Class was won by Eva Olsson and her flying toy poodle “Polly”. Even at this early stage I have high hopes for Polly especially in the Agility exercises. Scoring a credible 125 / 140 points, Polly just held off the challenge of Tracy Storer and “Charlie” ( 122.7 points) and the class character “Alfie” the Jack Russell and his handler Susan Beckett (121.9 points) The Advanced Class winner was a runaway win for Heather Powell and her G.S.D. “Rebel”. Scoring 133.9 out of 140 was a real achievement for Heather and her somewhat immature and playful dog. It just goes to show what can be done with dedication. The Agility Class covering a total of ten different obstacles was mastered by “Bailey”, handled by his more than competent owner, Pat Frewin. Sometimes it appears that “Bailey” finds that the jumps are all too easy. All jumps were marked on ability and control and to achieve 95 out of 100 marks shows the effort Pat has consistently put into the training exercises. ORIHUELA COSTA ROUNDUP Work on repairing and replacing street signs around the municipality has begun, with the first stage in the surrounding villages nearing completion. Stage two will then bring the contractors to the Orihuela Costa, where there are currently 642 name signs and 704 numbers missing. The final stage will then see the same action take place in the city of Orihuela. The 4-year long contract also requires the company responsible, API Movilidad SL, to maintain and repair the signs during the period of operation. On 26 March, at 11:00 there will be an information presentation offering advice about dealing with plagues of pests, such as cockroaches. Originally aimed at community presidents and administrators, the presentation has now been opened up to anybody and would be of benefit to business owners and individuals alike. Representatives from the Department of Health will be making the presentation in Spanish and it will be translated into English. Although booking is not required, places are limited on a first come, first served basis, but you can reserve a place by contacting the International Residents office on residentes@orihuela.es There has been some confusion over conflicting reports in some Spanish newspapers about “black spots” on the N-332, which included the La Zenia roundabout. The town hall have pointed out that the plans being reported are the exact same plans which have already been submitted and approved, and are just waiting for finances to clear to carry out the work that will change two of the roads into one-way access routes and provide a two-way road around the Consum supermarket. The bike lane project announced in November of last year is continuing around the coastal area, with the 9 kilometre route set for completion before the summer. More than 20 bike parking bays are also being provided along the route which will allow cyclists to leave their bicycle in key locations and walk down to the beaches. On the beaches, the bike lane project continues with the unemploy-
ment group workers, creating 9 kilometres of bike lanes. Requests have been forwarded for a few minor alterations and they will all be ready in the summer. More than 20 parking bays for cycles will be provided on all the different places where cyclists will be able to park and walk to the beach. A giant chess board and pieces will soon be installed in a park area on Calle Rosio, near to the Milona Blancos, with the chess pieces donated by neighbouring associations. As chess has just become part of the Spanish National Curriculum, this will allow generations of all age groups to play the game of strategy together, whilst also having fun. A secure area will also be provided to make sure the pieces remain safely locked away when not in use, and a timetable of availability will be provided once complete. The Orihuela Costa Triathlon will take place once again this year, scheduled for May 17th at the beach of La Glea. It is the third time that the event has been held on the coast of May for the third time. More information and registration can be carried out via the official website of the organisers, tragamillas.org.

YOUTH EMPLOYMENT EXPLAINING SOME OF THE MISTERIES OF DRIVING IN SPAIN EVENT IN TORREVIEJA The International Music Auditorium of Torrevieja will play host to an employment event this month, offering help and advice to the younger generations of the town who are looking for work. Expo Juventud will take place on March 25th and 26th, with 60 exhibitors offering help and advice, as well as training programs, all intending to give hope to the group worst affected by unemployment, the young. Local youth groups and official entities will all come together including the armed forces, medical entities, disabled groups and more, including a special show and presentation including Zumba, body combat, music and more.
Francisco Morales adressing members of ARPO
Having already reached acclaim by sharing help and advice about driving in Spain to their many thousands of followers on Facebook, the administrators of the page have also been giving talks to various associations in order to answer some of the most pressing questions that occur. Recently, N332 gave a presentation to ARPO, the association of retired police officers, who met in the municipal building of Quesada, and were treated to an hour long talk given by Francisco Morales, spokesperson for the N332 Facebook group and Traffic Police Officer posted in Torrevieja. Accompanied by a variety of pictures and videos, the audience were given visual representations of such topics as carrying bikes, parking, overtaking, licensing and more, including the topic that brought a sigh of hope, how to drive on roundabouts. There is no doubt that the presentation revealed a lot of unknown elements of Spanish driving laws, but more importantly reinforced the importance of researching the vari-
ous rules relating to driving, many of which are similar to those in the UK, but many others that differ, some only slightly but others quite significantly. Future talks are now being arranged in collaboration with Orihuela town hall and the Royal British Legion, with many other associations expressing an interest too. There is no doubt that by reaching out to these groups not only provides the vital information about driving, but also shows the Guardia Civil officers in a somewhat different light, as an approachable and informative body willing to try to solve many problems about driving in a theoretical manner before having to deal with them on the roadside.

SWEET CALIFORINA AT ERAS DE LA SAL Torrevieja´s councillors for youths and culture, Rosario Martínez Chazarra and Luis María Pizana, have announced that popular girl band “Sweet California” will be appearing in Torrevieja in April, in a concert that will take place at the Eras de la Sal. Tickets are on sale via ticketmaster.es, and a num-
ber of outlets in Torrevieja, at a cost of 14.50. The group, formed of three girls, Rocio, Sonia and Alba, are Spain´s first girl band to become popular and their music is enjoyed by both girls and boys equally. Alba and Rocio are both is 22 years of age and come from Alicante, whereas Sonia is 23 and comes from Seville. Their first single, “Infatuated” was released in 2013 and became an instant hit. The group have been touring shopping centres and stores promoting their latest collection of music, and have appeared in both Alicante and Murcia in recent weeks.
LIFEGUARDS IN TORREVIEJA FOR EASTER The beaches of Torrevieja will be a little safer this Easter, after it has been agreed that life guards should be provided once again, after they have been absent for the last two years. The councillor for beaches, Francisco Moreno, made the announcement that a 30,000 euro contract procurement process is underway in order to provide life savers this year. Three companies have been invited to tender for the contract, including the Cruz Roja who has worked on the beaches for over 25 years, but are now at risk of being replaced by a private company from this contract and in the future. Moreno explained that the process of awarding the contracts to private companies has meant that there will be other extensions to the normal service, such
as at the end of the summer, into September. Sources suggest however that the total cost of beach surveillance has now risen to 570,000 euro, an increase of 120,000. Orihuela will once again have lifeguards on the beaches at Easter as part of the contract secured with their private operator last year.

SPAIN LAUNCH Adding another major territory to its European rollout agenda, Netflix looks to be negotiating a second-half bow in Spain in either late Summer or Autumn. Sources suggest that Netflix has already closed deals with Hollywood major studios for Spanish rights with a product start-date of Sept. 1. Certainly, a Spain launch would be in line with Netflix’s ambitious announcement this January that it aims to roll out its footprint to 200 countries in the space of two years, while maintaining profitability.
SPAIN DRAIN Spain has outstripped France and Italy to become the world’s biggest wine exporter, exporting 22.8m hectolitres in 2014, a 22% rise on the previous year. Verse on Winter Fuel payment I Wonder Why? I wonder why, as we grow old, They push us further from the fold, 'You've moved abroad', is oft the cry, 'and you want equal treatment! Why?' 'You live in Spain - expect the vote?' Repeated with monotonous note. The government just does not care ‘We have no interest in you there’. Our generation has been the one that's worked so hard but kept its fun, its independence! and is not cowed by Government that lies out loud. Have they not the sense, the wit, to see that we know wrong from 'rit'? We have the weight of law onside, Tho’ their own laws are misapplied. Our politicians are the joke as they point fingers and they poke with fun the citizen abroad whilst they at home parade their fraud.
The old, the frail, need winter heat They’re brushed aside by hearts concrete. 'It’s hot in Spain' says he called Smith, ‘No fuel for you, it stops forthwith'. ‘Protect their benefits is the cry’ Cameron shouts it to the sky Brits in Europe need not apply, We’ll ignore them – they will die. 'All the taxes that they pay we will use our own sweet way' 'So if you're old and feel the cold Then more blankets you must unfold' There is one place that hears our cry, Our plea to Brussels, they’ll say 'aye'. 'You've earned it and you’ve paid your dues, Westminster lies, here’s some good news'. By Roy Parker

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
THAT EUROVISION FEELING It’s that time of the year again; time for the annual Eurovision Song Contest when Eurosceptics and Eurovision haters band together to pour sneering snobbery and scorn upon the UK's song entry, whatever it may be. Listening to the Eurovision haters is actually great fun, particularly since they are truly passionate in their hatred of the song, and the performers, regardless of talent that they may have. Such critics tend to forget that the Eurovision Song Content will capture the attention of citizens of many nations for one enjoyable evening in May. They will add into their argument comments, such as, "We won't win anyway, we never do", or "It's a stitch up", and even "It's nothing like Sandie Shaw", with the supposed killer comment being, “It’s all based on politics". Well really? Now, that's a surprise! Didn't their teachers ever tell them that it’s not winning, but the taking part that is important? The Eurovision Song Contest is, in many ways, rather like Blackpool, Benidorm and Marmite; you either love them or hate them. In my case, I love them all, and particularly Eurovision, which I have watched and enjoyed since childhood. This annual extravaganza taught me a lot about geography, since I would check out the countries represented in the contest in my atlas, and the people and languages represented would always fascinate me. Maybe it also set the seeds of curiosity that eventually led me to live a life outside the UK. Of course, I still remember that old trouper, Katie Boyle, a personifica-
tion of BBC professionalism, as she would make contact with the faceless juries in Rome, Madrid and Paris, whilst dreading those awful words, "nil point". I value the cooperation and friendship that Eurovision stands for. It is refreshing to hear Europeans discussing songs instead of the usual arguments and debates about budgets and unemployment. My usual response to the Eurovision cynics is "If you don't like it, don't listen to it". They seem to miss the point that it is not to be taken too seriously. It is just an evening of cheesy fun, high camp, glitz, and catchy showcase spectaculars. It is rarely about the quality of a song and its music. How could it be with so many countries and languages and cultures represented, and does it matter anyway? If I go into a German, Scandinavian, Irish or Spanish bar and ask "Who likes the Eurovision Song Contest?” the overwhelming response will be positive. If I tried that in a British bar, I guess I would be booed and laughed out of the premises. Yet come the big day, Brits will also head off to bars and parties to watch the event on the big screens, as will their European counterparts. It is almost as if Brits are afraid or unwilling to applaud anything that is remotely European, or maybe being seen to enjoy it. In many ways, the Eurovision Song Contest represents British suspicion of Europe and its institutions. The dislike and distrust of Europe that is now gaining ground in the UK is the result of entrenched insular attitudes of many of its citizens; flames fanned by immigration issues, unemployment and a range of other social issues, which are now finding a political voice. Sadly, I guess that the UK will never be a true and willing partner that is comfortable within Europe and sharing the European dream; negative attitudes towards Eurovision reflect
many of these issues. I am delighted that Australia is taking part in the contest this year. I have many Australian friends who are great fans of the contest, and it is my hope that Aussie enthusiasm and their usual pragmatism will help to lighten some of the more cynical British attitudes. I will be watching the contest, supporting both the UK and Spain, although I am not that bothered who wins the contest. However, I do know that it will be a good evening spent with friends from a range of countries. Personally, I would love to see a Worldwide Song Contest, which would be a refreshing change from viewing the world through the barrel of a gun. UK BUDGET STATEMENT Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne delivered his sixth Budget speech last Wednesday. Below we highlight a few of the Chancellor’s key measures from the spring Budget that will impact on the company car and van sector and wider motor industry. Company car tax Company car benefit-in-kind tax rates will increase by three percentage points in 2019-20, the Budget papers reveal. Rates up to the end of 2018-19 were announced in last year’s Budget. He said: “To encourage a new generation of low emission vehicles we will increase their company car tax more slowly than previously planned, while increasing other rates by 3% in 2019-20.” The Government says it remains committed to reviewing incentives for ultra low emission vehicles in the light of market developments at Budget 2016, to inform decisions on company car tax from 2020-21 onwards. Vehicle Excise Duty from April 1, 2015 for cars registered on or after March 1, 2001 The Chancellor announced a rate of inflation increase for Vehicle Excise Duty rates, but the majority of charges have been held at their 2014-15 levels, notably for lower emission vehicles. Fuel Duty The planned September 1, 2015 0.54p per litre fuel duty increase has been cancelled. In announcing the move, the Chancellor said the 2015 Budget built on the support provided by the government to motorists over the five years of the Parliament. That, he said, equated to a saving of £675 for a typical motorist, £1,400 for a small business with a van, and £21,000 for a haulier. Due to government action on fuel duty since 2011, by the end of 201516 the typical motorist will save £9 each time they fill their tank. Severn River Crossing tolls The cost of crossing the River Severn is to reduce when the Severn River Crossings pass into public ownership post-2018, the Chancellor has announced. The government says it will abolish Category 2 tolls (small goods vehicles and small buses) and include those vehicles in Category 1 tolls (motor cars and motor caravans). It will also abolish VAT on the charges. The Chancellor said the Severn Crossings carrying the M4 and M48 were a vital link for Wales and the measure would “reduce costs for businesses”. He also called it a “a boost for the drivers of white vans”. Current toll fees are: Category 1 (cars and motor caravans) £6.50, Category 2 (small goods vehicles and small buses) £13.10, Category 3 (HGVs and buses) £19.60. The Chancellor’s announcement will mean cars, motor caravans, small goods vehicles and caravans will pay £5.40 based on current charges and HGVs and buses £16.30. Driverless cars The Chancellor committed £100 million for research and development into intelligent mobility, which will focus on enhancing the development of driverless car technology and the systems required to implement and adopt the technology, such as telecommunications. Earlier this year the government announced the launch of driverless car pilot schemes in Greenwich, Bristol, Coventry and Milton Keynes.

‘SAAM STARTS RACING AGAIN AT LOS NAREJOS Mistral and Sirocco
Last Sunday March 15th was the opening day of the SAMM, Sailing Association Mar Menor, Spring 2015 Series racing at Los Narejos on the Mar Menor. A disappointing 5 boats came to the line for the start of the first race which was delayed till 12.30pm due to lack of wind but this was probably because many members had not returned to their Spanish homes. Under the overcast sky, in SE winds of 5 to 8.5 knots the race was very close fought at times but the
final result on corrected time was 1st the Sailfish 18 ‘Sirocco’ crewed by Robert Hudson and Julian Pering, 2nd the Faversham of David Belcher and 3rd the other Sailfish 18 ‘Mistral’ crewed by Mick Burgess and Ernie Foster. The second race started at 2.30pm in similar cold conditions with ‘Sirocco’ and the Faversham again placed first and second and the Hartley 12.2 of Don Clarke third. DO YOU WANT TO MEET YOUR ANGELS AND ARCHANGELS?
The word angel means “Messenger”, Angels bring messages from the Divine mind of our Creator and they are gifts to us from God, sent to help us remember our Divine Nature, to be loving and kind, to discover and polish our talents for a better world and to keep us out of harms way before our time. They also guide us in the areas of relationships, health, career and even finances. They can help calm you, because one person at a time leads to a world of peaceful people, which equates to a world of peace. That's why your angels desire to assist you in any way that will lead to serenity. You aren't bothering them or wasting their time if you ask for “small favours” as they know that minor irritants often add to major stress, so it's their great pleasure to help you with anything that stands in your way.
GUARDIAN ANGELS Guardian angels are assigned to you for your entire life. They have never lived as humans on earth unless they were “incarnated angels” -(ones who takes human form, either briefly or for a lifetime). Regardless of faith, character, or lifestyle, everyone as at least two guardian angels—whether someone listens to them, though, is an entirely different matter. One of your extroverted “nudging” angel pushes you to make choices in keeping with your higher self. She knows your talents and potential and encourages you to shine brightly in all ways. Then the other guardian angel is much quieter in her voice and energy level. She comforts you when you are sad, lonely or disappointed. She hugs you when you don't get the job or home that you desperately wanted and calms you when your Friday-night date doesn't show up. You can have more than two guardian angels – in fact most people I meet have many around them. Those who appreciate angels, attract more of them. It's not that are angels are biased in favour of their fans, it's just that those who are angelically inclined, tend to ask for additional help. This request is always fulfilled, no matter who asks for it All angels really do have wings and a Heavenly appearance, similar to the look of Renaissance paintings reproduced on holiday cards and religious art. They do not use these wings for transportation and they will take your hand and enfold a person in their wings for comfort. The angels say that the only reason they have wings is due to our Western expectations. The original painters of angels mistook their auras of light for wings so they depicted angels with wings in their paintings and now they appear to you this way so that you know that it is them...your angels
THE ARCHANGELS The Archangels oversee the guardian angels. They are usually larger, stronger and more powerful. Depending on your belief system, there are four, seven or an infinite number of archangels. We will meet additional archangels on the near future, almost like discovering new planets or solar systems. Archangels are non-denominational, and they help anyone, regardless of their religious or non-religious background. They are able to be with each one of us, individually and simultaneously because they are
beyond space and time restrictions. Imagine what your life would be like of you could be in many different places at the same time! Well, the angels say that the only reason we don't experience bi-locality is because we believe we can only be in one place at a time. Soon, we'll learn to lift restriction, according to them Know that you can call upon Archangels by mentally asking them to help you. No formal prayers are necessary and the although there are many archangels, I usually highlight Michael, Raphael, Uriel and Gabriel in my workshops WE ARE GOING TO MEET THEM, SEE THEM AND HEAR THEM AT MY NEXT WORKSHOP ON SATURDAY 28TH MARCH......SO COME ALONG AND MEET YOUR ANGELS, CONNECT TO THEM AND HAVE FUN WITH THE ENERGY......AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO FEEL YOUR ANGEL WINGS TOO This workshop called Working with your angels is being held at the Lotus Yoga Studios, 1st Floor, Bahia Las Dunas C.C, behind Mercadona, La Marina on Saturday 28th March from 12.00 – 4.00 at a price of just 15 euros. QUESADA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Spanish Life Properties This week has seen most of the leagues reaching their climax. The Winter League was in top form this week against Monte Mar which with a result of 10-2 gave us the League Title for a back to back win. Our Berleen team had another good win, to end equal on points, but take 2nd place on shot difference. In the SABA leagues, the Pearls were challenging for top spot, where we finished on equal points with San Luis, but came second on shot difference. Our Diamonds came with a strong finish against Emerald Isle Neptunes to finish fourth. In the Southern League the Swallows were away to Monte Mar where we only managed 5 points, which left us in third position in the League. The Swifts were home to La Manga and despite a 14-0 win we were unable to improve our league position. Our Federated Fours Panthers Squad currently in top position in the league, were away to San Luis Blues, only 2 points behind. In what can only be described as horrendous conditions with gale force winds the Panthers managed to get the 4 points needed by 1 shot, to take the Title. Good wishes go to Derek Sale who travels to Cyprus this week to represent Spain in the Four Nations Tournament For people who would like to get into the game of bowls, our club offers a new bowlers coaching programme. La Siesta Bowls Report By Norman Adcroft S.A.B.A. Leagues 16th March saw our final games of the winter season and it was the icing on the cake for the Apollos winning their League by a single point after a nerve wracking last couple of games which went to and fro with the Monte Mar Matadors. Going into the match three points behind the Matadors, the Apollos needed a good points win away against their opponents the La Marina Pathfinders to stand any chance of winning the league. Our Prayers were answered, we had a good mornings bowling and it was nip and tuck on most rinks, however we came out the victors winning 10-4,and shots to us 116–82. Our Winners were, Sheila Chorley, Doug Smith, George Richardson 21-13, Barbara Cooper, John Clarke, Jack Cooper 24-8, Hilary Clarke, Sue Jordan, Jean Cooper 20-13, and Ramsay Sinclair, Jim Hudson, Dave Livesey 18-10. (Thanks to Jim for standing in at the last minute) In contrast the Pioneers finished a disappointing season with an away win at San Miguel. La Siesta took three rinks thanks to Sheila and Roy Millward with Gary Thorpe; Peter and Kathleen Knapp with Jean Hepehi; and Bernadette McDonnell, Sid Gallup and Johnnie Ryder. The Sputniks final match was at home against the already crowned League Winners the Vistabella Drivers and they proved why they are the League winners. That said halfway through it looked a close game with three rinks apiece. Unfortunately the Drivers proved why they are this winter’s champions when they pulled away in the second half. A Hotshot by Doreen Leggett, Mac Maclean and Jim (Birthday boy) Harwood for the Drivers was the final nail in the coffin. Losing 1 rink to 5 and shots 66-142, our only winners preventing a whitewash were; Dawn Taylor, John Taylor and Harold Charleton. The Captains of the Apollos, Pioneers and Golds thank all their squad players who have turned out and contributed to this winters games. Thank You. Our Fed 4’s team had a great game winning away to the Monte Mar Earls winning 8-0. Winners were, Sheila Chorley, Alex Morrice, Pat and Brian Harman, Bernadette McDonnell; Carol and Gary Thorpe, Mike Kelly; and Joy and Brian Gardiner, Irene Mangan, with Jean Cooper. Chicken and Egg 4th March. Chicken Stuart Rolls, Wine Brian Thomason, Eggs Allister Mathieson. (Omelette at last Allister!!) Club Championship results next weeks report.

Ronald "Ron" Cammack b.15.12.33. d.19.03.15. aged 81 years. After ill health marred the last 2 years, Ron passed away peacefully at Torrevieja hospital after a relatively short but hard fight when he finally "ran out of steam". The care he received was wonderful; the nursing staff and doctors looked after him so well he could not have been in better hands. He leaves behind his wife Sheila & in the UK, 2 sons & daughters in law & 4 grandchildren, he was immensely proud of all their varied achievements. To many of the local bowlers he was more recently a loyal supporter of San Luis BC as he used to say "it's not easy watching but I never play a bad shot" Having moved to Spain in 2002 with Sheila they were both introduced to bowls for the first time at Country Bowls late in 2003
and as he had been an active sportsman in his former life, football, basketball & cricket which he even played in his 70's in a match with his older brother and his son (who was captain of the local village team) - bowls was the ideal game: competitive but sociable, just right to fill an odd hour or two - until he got hooked and was playing 5 days a week! He loved his life in Spain and appreciated so many good neighbours & friends, a bonus from being part of the bowling "family". The service to celebrate his life will be held at San Pedro del Pinatar tanatorio crematorio on Wednesday 25th March at 11:00. Please feel free to wear bowling club colours or bright, joyful clothes befitting a celebration.
SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB REPORT – 20.03.15. By Sheila Cammack Another mixed week of results and unexpected events, great wins and near misses. SABA: Klingons home v Q Pearls 91-115, 4pts-10. Colin Jackson, Keith Phillips, Mal Hughes 19-11, Bob White, Pat Coffey, Colin Lindgren 18-16, not a brilliant result but just enough to take top spot in Div A by shot difference over Quesada Pearls. Trekkers home v EI Titans a close win 8-6, shots 95-91. Chris Brooks, Jo & Julian Pering 19-15, Audrey Ford, Peter Cox, Charlie Marigold 19-6, Pat Bird, Les Bedford, Graham Bird 24-9. Unfortunately although the Trekkers finished on same shots as GL Maples, Trekkers lost on shot difference so will be relegated to Div B next season Romulans away v VB Eagles, had a great win 129-72, 13pts-1. Irene Everett, Tony Davies, Vic Slater 22-14, Ros Holmes, Bill Webb, Dave Blackie 17-17, Walter Lang, Mike Smith, Phil Morrachan 28-8, Cas Blay, Ian Ross, Peter Fuller 22-11, Maureen Foulds, Cliff Harris, Bob Foulds 23-9. This secures them 2nd place in Div C so they will move up to join the Trekkers in Div B next season. Vulcans had a good win away v EI Moonrakers, 10pts-4, 115-87. Jim Wright, Dave Tilley, Doug Beattie 30-12, Harry Epsom, Sadie Hubbard, Ray Whatmough, Malcolm Ayton 21-12, Carol Lowry, Phil Gilbert, Keith Lowry 18-9. Winter League home v Bonalba, 9 pts-3, 108-61. Unfortunately this
was not enough to win the winter league title this year, losing out to Quesada by 1 point, ah well hopefully we'll all be back to do it again next year; depending on the vote at the CBBA A.G.M. Winners: Pat Coffey, June Jones, Colin Lindgren, Keith Jones 23-8, Kath Reid, Charlie Marigold, Darren Johnson, Giuseppe Galelli 2020, Pam Lockett, Keith Phillips, Sabrina Marks, Mal Hughes 27-4, Shirley Verity, Jo & Julian Pering, Russell Marks 26-13. No Berleen match this week but the team has done enough to win the Berleen league – fantastic!! well done to everyone who has contributed throughout the season. On Tuesday 17th we played Quesada in the final of the Premier twenty knock out competition. After some very strongly contested games San Luis won 3 disciplines & lost one at home = 6 pts-2 and away we had one win and 3 draws = 5 pts-3 so San Luis win the trophy for 2015, well done to everyone who has been involved in any of the matches, great team work San Luis. Please check the notices re up coming leagues and club internal kangaroo and cocktail leagues Reminder: club AGM Saturday 28th @ 10:00. Club presentation evening Saturday 4th April. The main topic being will the league continue with two divisions or revert back to one. It firstly depends on how many teams wish to partake; over the past few seasons we have see sawed from 14 to 16 teams with the latter just interfering with summer visitors with busy bars for the fortunate ones. A late September start means plenty of visitors still around, the season creeping into late May the start of yet another busy period. 14 teams means a shorter season by 4 weeks, but I have either been approached or heard that there are new teams that wish to enter

our Euronics league. This either means refusal and a waiting list to join or acceptance and 2 divisions; a conundrum that usually resolves itself by the AGM in early September. Should any of our readers/players have a view point I and Derek Kingsbury would welcome any input, preferably by email. The current format has worked reasonably well, but some of the Division 2 teams have missed playing many of the Division 1 sides, even though results in some cases could be a foregone conclusion. There are of course counter arguments to a mix, but the outcome of any league in sport is that there will still be a winner and loser. The changes made this term will hopefully prove successful i.e. moving the KO cup final to its own night, freeing up time at the Presentation. The triples event held in lieu of the change looks to be worthwhile, but the outcome is too more additional weeks of the season, a fact affordable this time because of fewer matches, but necessitating a rethink should we revert to one division with the problems already mentioned. Over to you! In winning this week and chasing sides drawing, Breakaways have won Division 2 with three matches to spare. Second spot however is still up for grabs with it going down to the wire. The top three sides in Division 1 all claimed victory, the top two Hyenas and Meerkats still locking horns for the title. Meerkats have improved their leg difference of late, which will be their safety net should there be a shared title on points. Mike Douglas had the honour of securing victory for Breakaways this week and of course the Division 2 championship. A steady performance from Douglas culminated on D16 in his match against Maggie Nicholls. In the previous leg Mike Snow had made sure of at least a point with a steady performance against Jon Peters going out on D20. Singles of the night went to Bears Del Lister a D4 plus 2x100 and a 135 saw off the challenge from Ken Treble. Ivan Jones enjoyed a little showboating in his pairs with Snowy who had set up the finish with a ton. Jones required 32 for the game and the only way it seems you go these days is D8 followed by another D8 which he accomplished with two. Nice one Ivan. Jak Doggatt just edged Evolution´s man of the match with 3x100 and two game shots. The girls from Pint Depot are now enjoying their best run ever with two draws on the trot, this week´s draw a distinct possibility of victory over the Tavern Drivers. Watch out Sporting Life next week. The Tavern went one up via Ian Brown on D7, quickly erased by Rachael Broadhead on D2, Stu Mitchell´s 121 unused. Tavern took the next two through Paul Birtwhistle and Ron Hindley. Rick Cox and Hindley racked up a ton apiece in the next, the latter making it 1-4. Ms. Reliable Marie Dunne reduced the deficit on D6 with partner Lorraine Cox, for 2-4 at the break. Some great scoring from her Most Royal Debbie Wright at the start of the second half, set up D9 in one dart, over Birtwhistle. Cheryl Sleath made it all square on D2, her victim Ralph Weatherby, who had just returned via ferry from the UK and reports having been suffering from jet lag. Margaret Griffiths got the Queens into a 5-4 lead on D10, her opponent Cox unable to convert some reasonable scoring into a double. Dunne scored her socks off in the next and made sure of a point on D4, a win now very possible with two to play. It was score for score in the 11th, Broadhead versus Hindley, the Driver finally nailing D1 to keep his side in the hunt. So to the 12th leg and Lorraine Cox with throw against Ian Brown, it was tight, Brown getting to the double first and popping in D16 for a deserved point apiece. Hub Hyenas had a blinder entertaining the Kings from Pint Depot in a real high scoring encounter. At 4-3 to Hyenas the boys from the Depot would have expected at least a couple of more singles victories but no, the remaining five went to the Hyenas Joe Miller ensuring both points with a five ton display against Gary Minor. Nick Spicer had earned the draw with a similar display, to include a maximum playing Martyn Bynorth. Dave Wright got the better of Hyenas captain Simon Williams despite three 80+ scores and a 116, 121 from Williams, Wright taking out D16 for the leg. Frankie “W” had a nice 68 out, hitting T20, D4 in his pairs with Matt Cummins. Martyn Bynorth and Gary Minor being the other Depot victors. John Eyre and Joe

Meercats Triples Qualifiers - Derek Kingsbury, Alex Nikolov, Graham Todd Hawkins gave excellent overall performances, winning their respective singles in some style. 20 plus tons for the Hyenas, Miller topping the pile with 7, Matt Cummins ended up with 140 and 3x100, Gary Minor 2x140, 2x100 and Dave Wright 2x100. In this form the final league game and cup final should be a real humdinger between the two Hub outfits. Porter House are nearly home and dry for third place in Division 1. It may all depend on the last game of the season where they entertain Junction Jackals currently in fourth spot. A 121 from Babs Warren, not enough as Sid Cross 100 and Matt Jackson took the first on D20, Ray Hayes making it 2 up on the same double despite a 140 from Ray Harvey. Paul Gurrie D8 pulling one back for Busters. Paul Dowington made it all square on D16, Sid Cross contributing a ton. Harvey gave Busters a deserved lead with 121 and D10 followed by Irene Russell 129 and Mark Filer 100 expecting a 4-2 lead. Jackson foiled their ploy with 121 and D5 for 3 all. Busters were to win only one more leg courtesy of Peter O´Rourke in the 12th and last game against Ray Sanderson who took the middle leg on D12, O´Rourke completing the game on D10. A real tussle between Filer and Peter Ayres left the Porter as victor winning 2-0 both players hitting two tons each. Three ton Paul Hallett was just edged out by Sid Cross who found himself taking out both legs on D1 after some good scoring. The Meerkats victory score line made them look a trifle better than what was seen at the Junction. The Jackals took the first and only leg via Andy Gildea on D4 after a nice 118. Nigel Elvery contributing 115. Some steady throwing from the Kats made it 1-5 at half time, Gildea the Jackals only threat. Pat Abrams taking out 78 in two (T18,D12) plus 135 in the third triple. All six singles went the Kats way, the only single of note Paul Durrant taking out the first of two legs with a 180 and a 102 out (T20,S10,D16) against Mick Jones. Que Pasa Eagles enjoyed a 1-5 half time lead, the highlight of the first half being Stuart Clark´s 160 and 100 in the second triple, plus two 90 odds from Brett Badlove, Gogarty´s Christine Pattison taking out D10. Nice to see John Walker back, his contribution of 6x100, 139 and 4 doubles seriously making a difference to the Eagles, who have still to play the Meerkats on April 9th. Could be a tester for the Kats. Kevin Wood supported Walker with a fine effort of 4 tons and 3 doubles. Kevin Procktor took 2 of 3 against Badlove, John Williams winning the other Gogarty´s leg. Richard Pattison´s 2x100 insufficient against the in-form Wood. Senior Moments 1. Who is the captain putting up a 6 aside team for the 1st leg, a format we haven’t used for over a year! 2. Who is the female that enjoyed a day at the Health Spa unfortunately coming away with a broken toe? So much for healthy living! Any more senior moments?

ESTRELLA DAMM CRIBBAGE Into Week 25 on 16th March and the end of our season closing in fast with only 4 weeks left. As of now its Dorothy’s Magpies hogging the top position still by 4 points & this week against Peter’s Galleon whose 3 pairs managed just 1 win each while Don & Dorothy snorted it with 3 wins. Moving up to 2nd spot are Brian’s Jaguars who put the squeeze on Ron’s Nacho’s Voles whose best were Derrick & Ron with 2 wins leaving the Jaguar’s pair of Brian & Mick best with 3 wins. Hanging on to 4th place are Richard’s Ospreys who flew in with their 3 pairs scoring 2 wins each, dropping Paul’s Catorce 1 place with their 3 pairs all scoring just 1 win each. Ayliff’s Da Vinci’s Alpha maintained their 6th place with a fine win over Alan’s Robins who are clinging on to the basement position after their 3 pairs only scored 1 win each while the Alphas 3 pairs were happy with 2 wins each. Hard on the heels of the Alphas are Brian’s Galea with a fine win over Les’s Jays whose 3 pairs also only scored 1 win each leaving 2 Galea pairs both with 3 wins. Over at Lo Crispin, Mick’s Taverners squeezed my Falcons into our 7th consecutive loss because 2 of their pairs scored 2 wins each while only Barry & myself could match them with 2 wins. Meanwhile at Izzys Bar, Mike’s Peacocks kept up their winning form against Steve’s Steakhouse who had 2 pairs with 2 wins each only bettered by 3 wins for Brian & Kevin for the Steakhouse. Last but not least are Jim’s Siesta Sharks who put the bite on Keith’s Merlins in a close win with 2 pairs from each team scoring 2 wins each.

Spanglish Golf Society In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services At Alenda on 18th March 2015. This was the third meeting of the new year for the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 18 players visited the established course at Alenda taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The weather forecast was for rain but thankfully we avoided this on the but the winds were biting, making scoring difficult and wind cheaters were the order of the day. To speed things up a little under the threat of rain later in the day we played a 2 from 4 team stableford BUT unfortunately 2 players failed to arrive at the course leaving 2 players to play an individual stableford. The winners on the day were as follows: 1st – Team Evans – 82 points 2nd – Team Cawte – 72 points 3rd – Team Probert – 68 points, 4th – Team Howard – 63 points Nearest the Pins – Mike Probert and John Goulder After the game we returned to the Spanglish bar, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their support. Our next fixture is at Font Del Llop on Wednesday 15th April 2015 and visitors and guests are welcome because this is very much a social golfing group rather than a formal golf society. If you are interested in joining the group call Paul Cawte on 966731223 or better still pop into the bar. Lo Crispin Golf Society Alenda 18th March 2015 32 Members travelled to Alenda Golf under dark skies expecting a wet game of Golf for the societies Anniversary trophy event. Despite everybody loading their bags with waterproofs and a fairly cold north wind the day stayed dry except for a few spots of rain for the last few groups. The scores indicated that members found the back nine at Alenda more difficult than the front probably due to tiredness fighting the strong winds. The presentation took place at the evening meal in the Lo Crispin tavern and thanks go to David and his staff for a great evening. The scores for the day: Gold Category 1st Bob Berry 32pts – Winner of the Anniversary trophy 2nd Rod Day 31pts, 3rd Dicky Claeys 27pts, 4th Brian Smith 26pts Silver Category - 1st Paul Flanaghan 29pts c/b, 2nd Janet Candlin 29pts c/b, 3rd Steve Cosgrove 28pts, 4th Steve Harrington 27pts Nearest the pins - Hole 3 Alan Hunt, Hole 5 Bob Berry, Hole 13 Padraig Obrien, Hole 16 Brian Smith, There were no 2’s’ recorded for the day. IN THE BUNKER WITH MICK THE GRIP
Just Try it! MYAKKA PINES Golf Course in Florida is built on open swampland near the Everglades, prime alligator country. "This gator is about 13 ft long," the secretary said. “When they’re sunning themselves on the greens you just have to play through. We advise patrons not to feed them.” Oh really? RAE’S CREEK flows behind the 11th green and in front of the 12th green at Augusta National, in what is known as Amen Corner. The creek is named after Irish landowner John Rae, who built a fortress home there in 1734. Rae’s house was the farthest up the Savannah River from Fort Augusta, and neighbours would use it as a safe haven during Indian attacks. The brook alongside the 13th fairway joins Rae's Creek by the 12th green, falling over a weir beyond the 11th green. Many a golf ball has rolled down the 12th green and into the water here, the lowest point on the course and 160ft below the first tee. Those in the know say Rae’s Creek tugs silently at every putt on the course. NICE TO SEE Padraig Harrington atop the Leader Board again, winning the Honda Classic in a playoff for his first Tour victory since the 2008 PGA Championship. In 2014 he failed to keep full status on the PGA Tour for the first time, and he wrote letters to tournaments asking for a sponsor exemption. Some responded within an hour of his request, giving exemptions to the Valspar Championship, Arnold Palmer Invitational,Valero Texas Open and Shell Houston Open, before the Masters. To those who advised him to return one of the exemptions so as not to be worn out before Augusta Padraig replied: “I won’t turn any down, if I have an invite, I'll go. I appreciate it, and I owe a few people favours.'' But first it was back to Ireland, for a celebratory
Guinness. J.B. HOLMES held a five shot lead entering the final round of the WGC Cadillac at Trump Doral, but lost the tournament by one shot to Dustin Johnson's 9 under 69. Still, Holmes managed to finish one shot ahead of Bubba (Wonder if he said ‘Elementary my dear Watson!’) The new design of the Blue Monster was slated by many players as being too long and with ‘ridiculous’ greens. Johnson said it was ‘great’ (Well he would say that, wouldn’t he?) ADAM SCOTT has reverted to the short putter and tied 4th with a 2 under 70 at Doral. World No. 5 Adam said of the switch: “For guys who had never putted any other way, changing over would probably be a different story, but I’ve been successful with the short putter before, so this may be good for me.” Scott had become so frustrated with his putting that he took to the long putter in February 2011. He finished runner up to Els at the 2012 Open, won the 2013 Masters and last year briefly went to World No. 1. A TIP to make practice less boring. After warming up imagine you are playing each hole of your next round. This will use all the clubs in the bag and prepare you for your next game in a more useful way. (If it’s La Serena imagine a ball retriever as well.) LEE TREVINO, a friend of Tom Watson, commented on the U.S. teams’ criticism after the Ryder Cup. “I was really angry,” he said, “Tom worked his butt off for two years and all they did was show up and play. Anyway, criticism doesn’t sound good from a guy who has been on so many losing teams. If I had a losing record in the Ryder Cup, I'd keep my mouth shut." That’s blown his Christmas card from Mickelson. Until next time: Happy Golfing. Contact Mick for all your regripping and repairs. 638 859475.
CLUB DE GOLF EL PARAISO (ROJALES) LV39 15th March Pro-Am La Marquesa Competition
Happy Days Golf Society By Lubbertus On Tuesday 17th March the Society held the Spring Cup (Pairs Betterball) competition at Saurines Golf Course. The fact the course is desert style golf course contrasted with the fact that it was a very chilly day. However, the good turnout on the day made it feel that the characteristic undulating fairways and greens among desert dunes felt just that bit warmer. And the play itself was very warm with some very good scores. On the day the pair of Ron Hopkins and Dave Butler won the Spring Cup, but only just as both they and the pair Ray Coupleditch and Stan both finished on 44 points. It was only decided because Ron and Dave achieved 23 on the first 9, while Ray and Stan could only achieve 22. It was so close that the third place couple of Pete Hawes and Derek were only 1 point behind the leaders on 43. Kedrick Roades achieved nearest the pin at hole 6, while Fred Noakes achieved this at holes 10 and 18, and this at hole 18 which goes round the huge lake, so no mean feat. Another remarkable achievement was by Steve Dixon who hit the longest drive at hole 5, which by just 5 yards is the second longest hole on the course. However, even this feat failed to get Steve onto the leader’s board. It may sound from this intense competition that the Happy Days Gold Society is for accomplished players only. Nothing could be further from the truth as the society welcomes all comers of whatever level. If you would like to join the group, just pop down to the Marinasol Restaurant at Cabo Roig, by the Thursday Market and speak to Steve, or any of the staff there. They will welcome you with open arms. The Happy Days Golf Society’s next competition is on 31st March 2015 at La Torre Golf course, and all comers are very welcome.
As in previous years Joe Dean (P.G.A. Club Professional at Campoamor and Secretary for club de golf El Paraiso) has entered a team to play in this very prestigious event, Memorial Justo QuesadaJosepina 2015. This is a Pro-Am event where local PGA Professionals amateurs get the chance to play with Miguel Angel Jimenez, Spain’s most flamboyant golf professional. Miguel sponsors a junior circuit across Spain and luckily for us locals, he always attends the event held at La Marquesa as it coincides with the Memorial competition. On Saturday afternoon he gave an exhibition explaining and demonstrating shot making and an insight into the life of a European Tour Player. Sunday morning saw 27 teams of 1 pro and 3 amateur compete for a
feast of prizes including sets of irons, drivers, bags and much more which were all sponsored by Ping. The prizes were presented by Miguel during a fantastic meal provided by the “club house” restaurant; afterwards he made himself available for photographs. Club de Golf El Paraiso will be entering a team next year; the 3 amateurs for the team will be selected from our membership. TORREVIEJA FINALLY GET THEIR MAN CD TORREVIEJA ..........6 CD ACERO ...................1
With Man City coach Pelligrini
Following a disastrous run of 7 games without a win, during the last few days, Torry have finally decided that enough is enough, and parted company with manager Galiana. It had all looked so bright at Muro in mid January when Torry stormed to a superb victory, pushing them up to the dizzy heights of 2nd place in div 3, but 5 straight defeats, then 2 draws, meant the writing was on the wall for the highly animated Galiana. Taking his place is former Horadada boss Antonio Pedreno, who has been on the Torry radar for the best part of 10 years, having managed his former charges at both Segunda B and Tercera levels. Pedreno is best respected as perhaps the most loyal manager in the whole region having first joined ‘The Reds’ in the mid 1990’s. For the majority of his time in charge he has carried out the role without any payment whatsoever, and now, having recently taken early retirement from his job as the manager of a Horadada High Street bank, it is felt that with rather more time on his hands the challenge of steering CD Torrevieja to their former glories was too big an opportunity to forgo.
Pedreno will link up at Torry with a number of his former charges, including favourites Carrasco and Corcoles, both of which he is expected to develop as part of his backroom team. However, all that is in the future with the first task being was to take maximum points off Acero, who sit mid table along with Torry, therefore reducing the 7 points gap between themselves and the last play off slot. And the players set about their task in no uncertain terms. Gone was the fear factor we had seen with Galiani. The players looked comfortable on the ball and if the move needed to be taken back toward goal, that’s where it went. There seemed a new found joy in the Torry play. There was certainly a new found joy up front with 3 strikers taking the game to Acero and the home side were rewarded on 19 mins. Alexis played through Cesar who slid the ball to the side of the advancing keeper. Torry doubled their lead just 10 mins later through a Carrasco header and when they went 3-0 in front just prior to the interval, Brani hammering home a Cristian cross, we were all thinking the 10 year wait for Pedreno was well worth while. And there was no let up by the home side in the 2nd period, a further 3 goals scored, although disappointingly one also conceded, and all of course without the club’s 2 main strikers, Obele and Rafa Gomez, who were both absent through injury. Jorge, Adrian and Cesar with his second were Torrys 2nd half scorers in the 55th, 71st and 90th minutes and although Acero got on the scoresheet with a late scrambled effort from Eixea I think everyone concerned will be delighted with the Torry performance. It was free, it was flowing and it was entertaining and let’s all hope it was a sign of things to come. Next week a trip up the AP7 to Requena where Pedreno will be hoping for nothing less than his 2nde consecutive win against one of the divisions whipping boys.

TORREGOLF.EU At La Serena Wednesday 18th.March A few members did manage to survive St.Patricks Day and turn up to play golf on a day that was predicted to be a complete wash out with rain all day but someone took pity on us and even though it was very cold, yes it is still winter, and though extremely windy some even wearing shorts, we all managed the conditions and the water of La Serena. When ever I looked back during play there were members scanning the edges of a lake being just 1 of 16 that help to make this course a challenge at all times and it has to be said only 4 members managed to break our 30 barrier. Our Stableford competition in just 2 Categories to-day saw the winners as follows: Category 1. 1st. Alan Searle 34 points 2nd. Alan Moody 31 and 3rd. on count back Mick O’Brien 26. Category 2. 1st. After the game some members returned to Tilleys Bar in Mar Azul where we go following games in the South for results, presentation of prizes and also where David Gill is good enough to supply us with snacks. For this we are extremely thankful and would also like to thank all the Staff for their reception and hospitality. Our picture to day, yes it was cold! Shows some of the winners and members outside Tilleys Bar. For more information visit our web site www.torregolf.eu.

Elche CF ........0 Valencia CF....4 The visit of high flying Valencia, just like the trip to Sevilla the week before, was always going to be difficult for Elche and so it proved. An immensely entertaining first half, during which the hosts gave as good as they got, was punctuated by a Valencia opener a minute before the break. Thereafter, and in spite of a bright opening to the second period, Elche were soon two behind and chasing the game as Valencia took complete control. For much of the opening period the game ebbed and flowed as both sides sought to make their mark, twice Los Che thought they'd scored only for an assistant referee's flag to curtail their celebrations. Undeterred, Elche pressed on and, whilst looking very good on the counter, couldn't find a way past the well marshalled visiting defence. At the other end, Feghouli went agonisingly close with a deft, flicked volley that grazed an upright.
An error by Chilean central defender Enzo Roco down the right gifted Valencia possession, a mistake that was to prove costly. Alcácer slung in a deep cross to the far post where Feghouli was on hand to divert it goal-wards, Tyton could only push the ball into the path of André Gomes who made no mistake from four yards out. So close to the interval the goal was tough on Elche and served to demonstrate how top teams punish errors. Valencia weathered an early Elche storm and inside fifteen second half minutes doubled their lead. A precision pass by the excellent Feghouli released goalscorer André Gomes who centred for Paco Alcácer to volley home acrobatically as the Elche back four appealed in vain for offside. They didn't realise it but a bad night for Elche, and Enzo Roco in particular, was just about to get even worse. An identical build up to the second Valencia goal featuring the same players again paid dividends; this time, though, the hapless Roco, under no pressure and in the apparent absence of a shout from goalkeeper Tyton, steered the ball into his own net to gift Valencia their third. Just a couple down, Elche were still playing well enough to take something from the game but that goal, or rather the manner of it, visibly deflated them and was the signal for thousands of locals to head for the exit with a good twenty minutes remaining. Chasing a lost cause and a three goal deficit, 'Mister' Fran Escribá was bold with his changes, sending on forward Herrera and Coro in the vain hope of divine intervention. Instead, it was Valencia who scored the game's fourth and final goal deep into time added on when Otamendi rose unchallenged to power a header past Tyton who stood rooted to the spot. This was a clinical performance by Valencia whose strong third place in the classification really is no fluke. Elche's La Liga survival hopes won't rest on defeats like this and that to Sevilla last week. Moreover, avoiding defeat and, ideally, beating their direct basement rivals – they must still play Cordoba, Deportivo and Levante – will be crucial. Time will tell.
