CABO ROIG WALKWAY REO PENS TO PUBLIC AFTER 20 YEARS

Tel: 96 673 0057

The statement was made in a short council press release on Tuesday morning. It simply said ‘The Town Planning Councillor, Antonio Zapata, has announced that municipal crews have begun to demolish the wall and the fence that has been illegally erected by residents in order to prevent the passage by pedestrians along the seafront of Agua Marina to Cabo Roig.’

According to Zapata, following a two year, legal procedure, litigation through both Elche Courts and the High Court of Justice had finally ruled that the barriers erected by the residents of Bellavista 1 Urbanisation, blocking off the walkway between Cabo Roig and Aguamarina, was illegal, and in accordance with the council statement municipal crews had duly moved in and removed the barriers and gates at both the northern and the southern end of the stretch of the Bellavista 1 walkway. So for the first time in almost 20 years the coastal path was again restored to the public domain, allowing access and world class views to residents and visitors alike. Restoration of the walkway is a victory of course for the residents of Aguamarina, many of whom said they were particularly grateful to the Leader Newspaper and their involvement in the campaign, first highlighted in the newspaper back in 2003. In the last 12 years the story has regularly featured as the front page news item drawing support from all areas of the local political spectrum. The Leader has been instrumental in this campaign since day one, raising the matter on behalf of residents with every council team who have been in power, from the time of the PP rule, through the coalition government and every councillor who held the position of responsibility for the coast.

Monday, 30th March, 2015 In 2010, we covered the story in considerable detail, reporting on a complaint raised by Bob Houliston´s CLARO political group who criticized the “photo opportunities for Mayoress Monica Lorente”, without taking any action against these residents to regain the land. As the PP lost power in the last municipal elections, it was in the manifesto of the group who became the tri-party coalition that replaced the Lorente government, with Bob Houliston being given the post of councillor for the coast, but still no visible action. In early 2013 we also reported on the praise given to repairs of the beach under the management of Pedro Mancebo, who took over the role from Houliston, but still eluding the matter of the walkway, as we reported, “Questions still remain unanswered however regarding the section of the walkway at the northern end of the paseo illegally blocked off by the residents of the Urbanisation Bellavista 1 in Cabo Roig.”

When we reported this in May of last year, we stated how this is the first time some positive action has been made, returning the land to public ownership and use, rather than permitting a handful of residents, who many consider to be selfish and considered themselves above the law, to effectively steal land that doesn´t belong to them, depriving the rest of the community from access and egress to this part of the coast. And now, the campaign has finally come to an end, thus allowing the public to once again stroll along the Orihuela Costa and enjoy the beautiful views of the Mediterranean sea, deprived to them for so long. Ley 106 is the Spanish law that protects the country's coastline. We have all heard about the Costas law not permitting buildings to be built less than 106 metres from the beach. So under the 1988 Ley de Costas, the beach is considered to be public land. From the waterline there should be 106 metres where sports and agricultural facilities can be situated, but

not homes or permanent buildings. The idea is for the coastline to be a free area which everyone can walk along, and relax and enjoy. But until just last week, anyone who had tried walking along that particular stretch of the Orihuela Costa would see that not the case. During the demolition process, attended by representatives from the CLARO Party, as well as the Councillor for the Coast Martina Scheurer, the Town Planning Councillor, Antonio Zapata, was clearly distancing himself from the activity. Speaking to the Leader Zapata said that he didn’t want to inflame the situation any further and although it was necessary for him to be on hand to see the actions carried out he didn’t want to make any further statements at this time. He concuded by saying that after completing the demolition process, the cost of around 2,000 euros, would be passed to Bellavista Urbanisation for payment.

MAIDEN VISIT TO CARTAGENA FOR MV BRITANNIA

Entered into service only two weeks ago, on 14 March, the MV Britannia was in Cartagena last Tuesday where it was paying it’s inaugural visit to the historic city during it’s 2 week maiden cruise around Spain, Italy and France. On board were over 3000 passengers and 1300 crew who were greeted on their arrival by the Mayor, Pilar Barreiro, the Councillor for Tourism, Palazón Carolina and the president of the Port Authority, Antonio Sevilla. The trio were given a brief tour around the liner by first captain Paul Brown. During the visit there was an exchange of gifts between the two parties with the mayor presenting Captain Brown with a city shield while he received a commemorative plaque in return. The mayor said the visit of Britannia was an extremely important landmark in the development of the cruise industry in the region. “This is another massive step forward in establishing Cartagena as a premium destination with P&O Cruises” he said. “Such visits will ensure that this wonderful city continues to play a major part in tourist and cultural events for many thousands of foreign holidaymakers and visitors.” The mayor announced that Britannia will visit the city on another two occasions later in the year when it will bring over 8,000 visitors to Cartagena. The chairman of the Port Authority, Antonio Sevilla, said that the port has managed to improve on the number of cruise ships visiting the city because of

the extensive work carried out by the authority in recent years. He said that all visiting operators receive exceptional treatment while they are in the area which was also confirmed by the Captain. As his 3,600 passengers invaded Cartagena Capt Brown said that the great advantage of visiting such a city was the proximity of the facilities to the port. “Tourists can disembark the ship and be in the centre of the city within a matter of just a few minutes without all the expense of tour buses and taxi’s,” he said. Taking over the honour of flagship of P&O Cruises UK from Oriana, Britannia features a 94 metre (308 ft) Union Flag on her bow, the largest of its kind in the world. She has 15 decks, nine recreation areas, 4 pools and over 1,800 staterooms. The liner also enjoys an on board art collection valued at over 1.4 million euros. During her summer season, Britannia will sail around the Mediterranean, Norwegian fjords, the Baltic, Canary Islands and Atlantic Islands. During the European Winter, the ship will sail 14-night Caribbean itineraries.

OPERATION CAPTURA A convicted killer has been arrested, days after he appeared on a list of Britain’s most wanted fugitives who are believed to be on the run in Spain. Shane Walford, 38, was detained in the Canary Islands by Spanish police. Walford, a former soldier, was jailed in 2010 for the manslaughter of an off-duty fireman. The former boxer was imprisoned for four and a half years and released after serving half of his sentence but was recalled to prison in August 2013 after breaking the terms of his licence.

CITIES RENAMED IN PRANK Cities in Spain are being renamed on Google Maps after their former incarnations as Islamic kingdoms almost a thousand years ago. First to be affected was Algeciras, near Gibraltar, which showed up as Taifa de Algeciras, in reference to its brief existence as a Muslim principality in the early 11th century. Then on Friday Niebla, also in Andalucia, was replaced by Taifa de Niebla, and a Taifa de Albarracín appeared in northern Teruel province. "We ask users to help us by adding information, but, you get this kind of cyber vandalism," SAID A Google spokesperson. It is not known who is behind the spate of renamings.

ALCALÁ DEL JÚCAR CRAFT FAIR AT EASTER WEEKEND

Alcalá del Júcar is a really lovely place to visit - lots of water, lots of old buildings, narrow picturesque streets, and the whole place hidden in the dreary flat plain that you cross when you drive from Alicante to Madrid. And now, for the Easter weekend (2 to 6 April) there's also a craft fair. A real craft fair, with real craft work to be seen on the stalls, made by the people on the stall. Nothing imported, nothing from small factories, all carefully and lovingly made by people who chose this way of life. Amata, the craft association which created and registered the "Artesanía de Autor" label, will be setting up a fair in Alcalá for the second year running. Amata is a craft association dedicated to preserving and enhancing craft work in Spain. Amata inspects workshops, critically examines how goods are made and who makes them, checks that what is on the stall is made by the people on the stall - a guarantee that any visitor to the market will find goods that are original and of good quality. There will be some forty stalls with ceramics, with wooden toys and leather handbags, with painted Tshirts, hand made shoes and sandals, design jewelry in silver, ceramics, wood, silk and recycled materials, puppets and soft toys, even mosaics. Plus there are stalls with food. For younger visitors there are workshops where they can learn how to make their own work piece - a valuable introduction to the idea of doing things for one's self. The workshops are run by people on the stalls, they charge a little money for materials. Then there is a merry-go-round for very young children, a young couple who make thousands of soap bubbles, and wooden table games for children of any age. All is set up in the shade of some high trees at the foot of the hill on which Alcalá del Jucar is built, almost next to the river. What a lovely place to spend a day - there are plenty of restaurants nearby

and the town itself is a delight to visit, with a Roman bridge, three large caves and its own impressive castle; visitors can also enjoy numerous activities such as horse riding, rafting, fishing, climbing and various guided walking tours. One of Spain's many "caminos de Santiago" (the pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostella) passes through the village and for people who don't want to follow a guide nor walk the odd 1,000 kms there are a number of sign-posted local walks. The Market opens on Thursday afternoon at 6 pm; on Friday, Saturday and Sunday opening times are from 11 to 2 in the morning and from 5 till late in the afternoon and evening and on Monday only in the morning from 11 to 2. To get to Alcalá del Júcar follow the main autovia from Alicante to Madrid and turn off just past Almansa; Alcalá del Júcar lies half way between Almansa and Requena. To find the market with your GPS: the address is Callejón La Virgen. More information on the market to be found on the Amata web page (www.amata.es, also in English) or you can ring Elvira (who speaks English) on 639 979 678. For accomodation or excursions you can ring the tourist office on 967 473 090.

ORIHUELA NEWS ROUNDUP FIRE EVACUATION A fire in a warehouse of a pharmaceutical factory in the Orihuela town of Beniel on Friday resulted in nearby homes having to be evacuated for fear of an explosion. Fire crews from Abanilla, Molina de Segura and Murcia attended the scene and managed to bring the fire under control without any reports of injury, although neighbours in the surrounding areas were alarmed by the toxic black smoke that emanated from the location.

Earlier in the week, the socialist councillor for staff, Victor Ruíz, was forced to defend the provision of “bagged” hours to ensure police cover. The head of the PP, Damaso Aparicio, had spoken out to criticise the lack of security during Semana Santa, after holding an extraordinary Public Safety committee meeting convened by the group. According to the government team, their meeting “has been able to verify that all emergency services are ready for Semana Santa” and the Mayor stated that “security is guaranteed at all levels and in all events to be developed throughout the week”.

The PP had claimed that the refusal by the Mayor to include the motion “violated the fundamental right enshrined in Article 23 of the Spanish Constitution”, but as those salaries “can only be changed on the occasion of the annual budgets”; the appeal was rejected with the PP ordered to pay costs.

Now that the adverse weather has apparently eased, the coastal department has resumed work to overhaul and repair the sands and coastal walks on the Orihuela Costa. According to the councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, work is progressing well despite the damage suffered after having already been treated and arranged before the bad weather. The only exception is the small beach of La Caleta, where the last storm has swept all the sand away and left a half-meter area that has been covered with algae. This situation prevented entry for the machinery for removal, so the priority has been given to the rest of the beaches.

POLICE CHOPPER IN EMERGENCY LANDING SCARE A Catalan police helicopter made an emergency landing at the Circuit de Catalunya in Vallès Oriental on Thursday, after the turbine caught fire during a routine flight. The incident occurred at around 11:00 in the morning shortly after takeoff from the Sabadell heliport with three officers on board. The pilot made the emergency landing having realised the problem with the engine, managing to land safely and without injury to those on board who received medical attention shortly after as a precautionary measure.

The Spanish government has vowed to take action against Twitter users who have expressed praise over the Alps plane crash in anti-French and anti-Catalan tweets. The National Police and Guardia Civil are currently investigating a number of accounts.

LOOKING UP Spain’s economy keeps accelerating and may grow 0.8% in the first quarter of this year from the last quarter of 2014, as lower consumer prices drive internal demand, the country’s central bank said Thursday. The eurozone’s fourth-largest economy is likely to grow 2.5% on an annual basis in the first quarter, the Bank of Spain said in a monthly report. The bank also raised its forecast for economic growth this year to 2.8% from 2% previously. In 2016, the central bank said it expects the economy to grow 2.7%.

According to sources the Catalan police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the damage to the turbine, which has been completely burned, whilst the rest of the aircraft has no visible damage. A union spokesperson representing the police said that the government had acquired the helicopter from the TVE television company, and reported that the aircraft had already suffered an accident in Asturias during a stage of Vuelta de España cycling race.

NER VOUS FLYERS REFUSE TO BOARD BARCELONA JET An Airbus airplane on a flight from Barcelona to Munich on Thursday is reported to have made an emergency call to air traffic controllers and decided to return immediately to Barcelona due to a technical problem. Reports of a burning smell on board the A320 aircraft prompted the Captain to make the decision to return, where it landed safely and without incident, as would be a normal, textbook response to such an incident. The passengers were transferred to another aircraft for their journey to Germany, although perhaps coming so soon after the tragedy in the Alps earlier in the week, around a dozen passengers decided not to fly.

Five vehicles were involved in a pile up on the N-332 near Santa Pola on Tuesday evening, with six people suffering injuries, three of them serious. The crash occurred at around 18:30 when a vehicle travelling from El Altet to Santa Pola, with two occupants on board, crashed into the vehicles on the N332, near to the abandoned Rocas Blancas hotel.

The immediate chain of events saw numerous collisions involving a total of four more cars, one of which collided with the wall of a restaurant, resulting in the driver having to be extracted by the attending emergency crews. The initial investigation reveals that a brake problem may have been the cause of the collision, but a full investigation is underway.

NO TURNING BACK THE CLOCKS, GEM URGES NEW GOVERNMENT

An often confusing aspect for drivers in Spain is the appearance of a coloured rectangle on the windscreen of cars. That sticker corresponds to the Inspección Técnica de Vehículos, or ITV for short, which displays that fact that the vehicle has passed a periodic and mandatory test of roadworthiness. There are 3 colours for the ITV sticker, with each colour indicating when the ITV expires. If you have a sticker coloured; Yellow (Your ITV expires in 2014), Red (Your ITV expires in 2015), Green (Your ITV expires in 2016), which then rotate once again through the three colours, so Yellow in 2017, Red in 2018, Green in 2019, etc. You can check that in your sticker, there is a small hole, which informs you the month when your ITV expires. Do I have to display the sticker in my vehicle? Yes, of course. The sticker is placed on the windscreen of cars and is regulated by Royal Decree, which states that “vehicles that have favourably passed the periodic test shall display in a conspicuous place a distinctive, which date indicate they must pass the next inspection”. Anybody who has been for one of these inspections will known that it is much like the equivalent of the

M.O.T. in the U.K., albeit with different qualifying criteria, but on passing the test the vehicle´s documents are updated, and the sticker given to be displayed on the windscreen. Where do I have to display the sticker? As for where the sticker is displayed, that too is dictated by law, and it Is mandatory to place it in the upper right corner of the windscreen as you are looking out, affixed to the inside, so that the sticker can be clearly observed from the outside of the vehicle, where it will subsequently be displayed in the upper left hand side. Can I have several ITV stickers on my windscreen? A common question relating to this sticker is whether old ones have to remain as time goes by. The simple answer being that as the sticker is used to indicate the date of the next required test, then the answer has to be “NO”, only the current and valid sticker should be present. There is a fine for not displaying the sticker correctly, but simply ensuring the sticker is in the right place, and valid, can avoid a lot of undue hassle during routine vehicle checks. “The ITV sticker informs the police that your ITV is ok, so if you do not display the sticker you could be stopped to check if your vehicle has a valid certificate”.

A holidaymaker has been stuck in a Spanish hospital for 11 days – because no NHS beds were available back home. Chris Carr, 62, was in Benidorm with his wife Sally when he was rushed to hospital with a hernia. But when his medical insurance company rang three hospitals near his home in Melksham, Wilts, they were told there were no free beds. The couple's concerned friends rallied round and launched a campaign, putting pressure on the hospitals and getting support from their MP. Chris has now been offered a bed in Bath, Somerset, and will fly home.

LORCA CHURCH REOPENS ROAD SAFETY organisation GEM Motoring Assist is urging the UK government to agree to adopt Single/Double British Summertime (SDST). Experts believe the move, involving an adjustment of the clocks to GMT + 1 in the winter and GMT + 2 in the summer, would prevent 80 deaths and more than 200 serious injuries on the UK’s road each year. GEM chief executive David Williams MBE comments: “There are indisputable safety reasons for adoption of SDST, but also compelling economic arguments. Estimates from the Department for Transport’s own research1suggest the benefits of a move to SDST would amount to nearly £140 million annually, with just a modest £5 million one-off investment in communicating the change. “There is no logic in retaining our current time system, and any reasons we hear for opposing the change are irrelevant and outdated. “GEM, in line with all safety groups, supports a change to SDST, because it will make a significant contribution to reducing deaths and serious injuries on our roads. We therefore call on an incoming government, of any colour, to legislate for this change as a priority. We can then avoid turning the clocks back in October, and save lives in the process.”

Last Sunday the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora la Virgen de El Carmen in Lorca was officially blessed and reopened by José Manuel Lorca Planes, the Bishop of Cartagena, following the completion of repair work almost four years after the devastating earthquakes that brought it so violently to International attention. Throughout its history, the church has undergone lots of renovations and reconstructions due to numerous earthquakes and fires th,e most devastating of which, during the Spanish Civil War in 1936, totally destroyed the church interior.

NEW PUBLIC SAFETY ACT APPROVED The new Public Safety Act was finally approved this week, with the PP and UPN using their majority vote to ensure the bill was passed, despite the rejection of the opposition. The final passing of the bill ends 16 months of parliamentary procedure and changed to the original draft which was presented in November, 2013. Some of the more controversial elements have been removed, with others seeing lower penalties now to be imposed, and a final list of 44 reasons when a fine would be levied, after 19 direct offences were removed from the law. The fine for concentrations which do not have the correct authorisation has been reduced from 600,000 euro to just 300,000 euro, but with a maximum individual liability of 30,000 whenever a “serious disturbance of public safety” takes place. Journalists will not be punished for photographing the police, unless the images “may endanger the personal or family security” of the officers. There are four circumstances which would constitute a “very serious” offence, resulting in a fine of between 30,001 euro and 600,000 euro, which includes, but is not only, unauthorised demonstra-

tions, manufacturing and storage of weapons, holding public performances which have been banned, and projecting beams which could dazzle or distract drivers. Serious offences carry fines from 601 euro and 30,000 euro, and they include such activities as disturbing public safety at public events, serious disturbances outside congress and parliament, impeding barricades, disobedience of authority and refusal to dissolve a demonstration, amongst others. There are also 17 minor offences, which include causing or inciting acts against sexual freedom and indemnity, showing a lack of respect towards security service staff during the course of their duties, occupation of houses and hawking, failure to report the loss or theft of a gun, not having the legally required personal documentation, refusing to give documents to the police, causing damage to public property and scaling buildings or monuments without authority, amongst many others, including the consumption of alcohol in public places when severely disturbing the peace of the public and letting loos ferocious animals and abandoning pets or leaving them in conditions that can endanger life. The law will come into force once published in the official gazette.

POLICE NUMBERS TO INCREASE THIS YEAR The Spanish Government has approved an increase in law enforcement officers in the country, adding 1,374 police posts and 884 positions within the Guardia Civil. This is the largest increase so far during this administrative term which ends this election year.

Within the quota of Guardia Civil officers, 64 will be for student postings, the largest increase in the last year, the remaining being front-line troops. The police force will be boosted by 1,299 front-line officers and 60 executives, representing an increase of over 300% on that promised. The last time such an increase was approved was in 2009, during the socialist government´s administrative term, with an increase of 5,000 officers in 2008, although the financial crisis started to take hold in 2010, resulting in a decline in police numbers, before the 2011 elections saw a new government continue to make cuts, until now, the end of this political term. There will be increases in administrative staffing dealing with such matters as taxation and justice, as well as local government, with the total number of jobs being advertised by the ministry being 11,250, of which 7,416 will be for open recruitment, the remaining 3,834 by internal promotion.

COULD THIS SPELL THE END FOR SPEEDING TICKETS? NEW FORD TECH CAN AUTOMATICALL Y AUTOMATICALLY PREVENT DRIVERS EXCEEDING LIMITS? Ford of Europe is launching a new technology that could help prevent drivers from exceeding speed limits, and potentially from incurring costly speeding penalties ?Intelligent Speed Limiter enables automatic adjustment of maximum vehicle speed to remain within legal limits; camera detects signs, system helps ensure limits are not exceeded ?Ford debuts system on the all-new S-MAX; sports activity vehicle also can detect people in road ahead and automatically apply brakes if driver does not respond to warnings Breaking the speed limit can be costly in terms of fines, and driving bans, as well as playing a significant role in many road accidents. Ford Motor Company is now launching a new technology that could help prevent drivers from exceeding speed limits – both when driving in their own country and abroad. Drivers have for some time been able to set a maximum speed for their vehicle. Now the all-new S-MAX sports activity vehicle – equipped with Intelligent Speed Limiter – can help ensure the maximum speed is automatically adjusted to remain within changing speed limits. “Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in

the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement,” said Stefan Kappes, active safety supervisor, Ford of Europe. “Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit.” Drivers activate Intelligent Speed Limiter via steering wheel controls to set a maximum vehicle speed. The system uses a windscreenmounted camera to monitor road signs and when the speed limit is lower than that maximum set speed, ISL slows the vehicle as required. As the speed limit rises, the system allows the driver to accelerate up to the set speed, providing it does not exceed the new speed limit. Ford has in recent years introduced many technologies to its vehicles that help drivers to park, remain in their driving lane, and avoid lowspeed accidents. Intelligent Speed Limiter for the first time combines current Ford technologies Adjustable Speed Limiter, and Traffic Sign Recognition, which are both already available on models including Focus, all-new Mondeo, and Kuga SUV. Effective at speeds of 20-120mph, Intelligent Speed Limiter ensures smooth deceleration by restricting the fuel supplied to the engine, rather than applying the brakes. Should travelling downhill cause the vehicle to exceed the specified speed an alarm is sounded. Intelligent Speed Limiter also communicates with the onboard navigation system to help accurately maintain the appropriate maximum speed when distances between speed limit signs are greater, for example on long country roads. Drivers can temporarily override the system by firmly depressing the accelerator pedal. Ford’s all-new S-MAX offers further advanced technologies including Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection that can detect people in the road ahead – or that could cross the vehicle’s path – and automatically apply the brakes if the driver does not respond to warnings. “We're not just developing cars at Ford, we're also developing technologies to make driving more convenient, safer, and ultimately help

improve mobility around the world,” said Pim van der Jagt, executive technical leader, Ford Research & Advanced Engineering. “Innovative systems like Intelligent Speed Limiter, Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, and Active Park Assist are making the benefits of semi-autonomous technology accessible to everyone.” Available to order now priced from £24,545, S-MAX also delivers Glare-Free Highbeam headlights that help avoid dazzling vehicles ahead while retaining maximum illumination for other areas. Front Split View Camera makes negotiating junctions easier with a camera located in the grille.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Healthcare for Expats in Spain & the Canary Islands Expats can be a strange lot. A great deal of time is often spent in selecting the right place to live, a new home, kitchen appliances and even thinking about a new job. However, I rarely find that expats give much consideration to that most important of subjects - healthcare. Indeed, along with "How do I get Brit TV?” one of the most popular questions that I am asked, often when it is too late, is "Can I get free healthcare in Spain?” Of course, the answer is a confusing yes, and … no. When I worked as a reporter in the Costa Blanca, I remember interviewing a couple who had retired early and moved to Spain long before the statutory retirement age when the man would have been entitled to free healthcare within the Spanish health system for both he and his wife. They were unhappy that their Spanish doctor had refused them treatment and wanted the newspaper to publish a story condemning the “injustice”, as they saw it, when they were refused treatment. The couple were rather proud of the fact that they would travel back to the UK every six months to collect their "free E111 health certificate", which at that time would allow them to claim free emergency medical treatment in Spain. The couple seemed to be hypochondriacs, so when they were in the UK, they, mother in law and assorted family members would enjoy free UK NHS care, before continuing their

treatment free within the Spanish system when they returned home. Eventually, this state of affairs came to a sticky end, when their Spanish doctor eventually realised what was going on and refused to treat them under the free E111 scheme, which was only ever intended to be reciprocal emergency cover for holidaymakers. The couple were not at all happy and after much complaining, reluctantly opted to take out rather expensive private health cover until he reached the statutory retirement age. I remember listening sympathetically to the story, but with no intention of publishing it. At a time of scarce health resources, I thought it was admirable of the doctor to spot abuse of the system, and to do something about it. Clearly, this was pure abuse of an already overstretched system, and governments of both countries were right to put an end to it. In more recent years, the financial crisis faced by all countries in Europe have forced governments to reassess exactly who qualifies for free or subsidised treatment and who does not. Of course, many have fallen foul of the new rules, leaving some without any health cover at all, and often because they do not understand the newly enforced requirements. In the case of Spain, the message is clear. If you are an expat over the statutory retirement age, you will be entitled to free healthcare, but always check your entitlement with the Department of Health in the UK before you move to Spain. If you are under the statutory retirement age and have a contract of employment, your employers will usually provide free healthcare under the Spanish system, but do check that this is the case. If neither is applicable, you have two options. The first is to purchase private health insurance. This can be expensive, dependent upon any pre-existing conditions and age. Although I have private health insurance, I am not a great fan of private healthcare, and would not wish to rely upon it for everything. It is reassuring to have it for emergency referrals and second opinions, but I am an admirer of both the UK and Spanish Health Services, which would always be my preferred choice in most circumstances. If you are not entitled to free Spanish NHS cover, you can now pur-

chase it within most of the autonomous regions of Spain. It is very good value with cover in the Canary Islands, for instance, now available for 60 euros per month. This does, however, exclude subsidised prescriptions, which have to be paid for in full, and the European health card (EHIC) if you wish to travel to other countries. However, as most expats quickly recognise, most generic drugs are exceptionally good value in Spain, and far cheaper than their equivalents in the UK. In conclusion, if you are not retired, or in full time employment with a contract that includes health insurance, I recommend buying into the Spanish NHS scheme (Convenio Especial), as well as supplementing it with private insurance cover, if you can afford it. It is one of those things that may be irritating, boring and time consuming to arrange, but you will be very grateful for it should the time come to use it. Journey to the land of Christian Kings It was from the kingdom of Aragon where Zaragosa is found that the Christian re-conquest of Spain found its roots. But first on route let’s make a short visit to Teruel. Despite the terrible damage done to this town during the Spanish civil war, it has risen from the ashes to recover the peaceful charm characterised by its narrow streets and delightful buildings. Centred around the Plaza de Torico (meaning small bull), Teruel is the smallest provincial capital in Spain. Street cafes line the sides of the square. From here it is only a short walk to the cathedral and the Mausoleum of the lovers of Teruel whose actual remains can be seen in the church of San Pedro. Zaragosa by comparison is much larger. Sitting on the banks of the longest river in Spain, the river Ebro. Here on the banks of the river the towers and domes of the Basilica de Pilar rise majestically above the city. Zaragosa, despite being larger than Teruel still maintains a relaxed and easy going atmosphere. Streets filled with street cafes and tapas bars spill into squares dominated by attractive buildings. An unexpected sight this far north, is the Aljaferia. A Moorish palace which was built in the 11th century by the Benihud The architecture of the vineyard echoes the shapes of the mountains.

family. This rather special building is open daily to the public. A low cost hop on hop off tourist bus is available. The ticket also gives free entry to many museums. Mini cruises on the river are generally also available. With so much to see and do, it would be difficult not to enjoy time in this active city. A day away from the city takes us to Monasteria de Piedra. An old Moorish castle which was donated by Alfonso the 2nd to the monks of Poblet to help them spread Christianity in the area. The main church and cloisters still stand in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Amongst the normally arid countryside of this area you suddenly find this lush green fertile oasis which surrounds the monastery. Caves, the “mirror lake” the 50 foot high “horsetail waterfall” streams, and rivers make for some very beautiful surroundings. A meal in a local restaurant with panoramic views of the lake add to the pleasure of the experience. Finally. There is no need, when it comes to wine, to introduce you to the famous Rioja name. Logroño, the capital of the Logroño region is also home to some of the finest bodegas in the area. Situated further downstream than Zaragosa, again on the river Ebro, this pleasant little town offers a notable cathedral and is particularly famous for its tapas bars which are found on Calle de Laurel. The highlight of this day though has to be a visit to one of the largest and best known Bodegas in the country. Here on the outskirts of the town we visit a Bodego, which to the background of the Sierras de Cantabria and la Demanda is surrounded by vineyards on all sides. In one room alone

CONTINU ED SUPPOR T FOR PEDRO MANCEBO On Sunday 22nd a group of 230 residents in Orihuela Costa held a lunch meeting to show their support for Pedro Mancebo after his 6 years as a local political leader.

One of the organisers, Escher Bookelaar said “Pedro Mancebo has been the only councillor in the last 4 years that has worked with honesty and integrity for the coast and the city, and despite the unfair criticism, the lies and personal attacks that he has suffered from his political opponents, he has tirelessly continued to try to bring improvements to benefit everyone and make the changes necessary to install an efficient and capable government”. Those in attendance at one long table agreed “that every proposal made by Pedro Mancebo during his time in government and in opposi-

tion made perfect sense and were exactly what all of Orihuela needed, and that he is very clear and reasonable in his approach to needs of the people.” They said “that it was unfortunate that he had to cope with other councillors and parties that were more concerned about their personal interests, ambition and futures and that of their political parties, rather than looking after the interests of Orihuela and the welfare of its residents”. Judith Webb said “Nothing will make us to give up our desire for improvements and changes in Orihuela Costa. We need a leader like Pedro Mancebo who has the proven ability, experience and personality to achieve the services and interests required by the people. We are not going to allow another 4 years of neglect and broken promises from a useless government to be repeated. We pledge our full support for Pedro Mancebo who is a most capable politician and is undoubtedly on our side”. Raymond Kearney finally stated “We fully support and approve of the vision and the

efforts that Pedro has put into the local administration in regards to improving our local economy through the protection and development of tourism and the improvements of green areas and especially in the street cleaning, green waste collection and rubbish removal. We want him to be able to implement the improvements that would be complete now if he had not been removed from the driving seat by the green and socialist government who were jealous of his abilities and progress”. The supporters that were gathered along with their families and friends are determined to back Pedro Mancebo in the next local elections and to make their voice heard and to claim their rights in the Town Hall of Orihuela. They individually and collectively asked Pedro to lead a political project of honest and hard-working people who care about the real concerns of all the citizens and to bring about real and lasting improvements to the whole of the Orihuela community. Pedro Mancebo was unanimously requested to continue to fight for the people and their needs. He was hailed as the only leader capable of realising the demands of the citizens and was asked in very strong and persuasive terms to campaign as a candidate for government in Orihuela. It was emphasised that once all the electorate discern which politicians want personal gain or party power and who is interested in the welfare of the people, there will be a landslide in favour of Pedro Mancebo.

Cloisters of the Monasterio de Piedra 7,000 barrels stretch as far as the eye can see. After theguided tour relax for a moment on the balcony of the bodega sipping a glass of the finest Rioja whilst surrounding by the vineyards which produced the grapes. Lovely !! This new excursion from David’s Coachtrips ticks all the boxes and is centred in a 4* Zaragosa city centre hotel on a B&B basis. All excursions are included as are entries to Monastery, and Bodega. This trip is 5 days May 27-31 for only 262€.

We won’t tell you what you should do. We won’t make decisions for you, and we won’t tell you what we think about the decisions you choose to make. You are the expert on your own life. If you want us to, while we’re talking, we may be able to give you contact details for organisations that specialise in helping with a problem you may have. Suicidal feelings You don’t need to be suicidal to contact us, but if you are feeling suicidal, sharing how you feel could help. We aim to explore suicidal feelings with everyone who contacts us. Most people who contact us are not suicidal. By asking the question, we’re just giving you the space to talk about these feelings if you want to. Ending the conversation You can end the conversation when you’re ready to. Sometimes phone conversations last about an hour, but some are much shorter. But our approach to supporting you stays the same, however, there is no script, and no two conversations are the same, but they usually have similar elements. A fully trained volunteer will always answer. If you phone us, we answer with something like ‘Samaritans, can I help you?’ With text, email, letter and face-to-face visits, how we respond to you depends on what you say. Putting you at ease It takes a lot of courage to ask for help. It can be difficult to talk about what’s troubling you. It’s fine to take your time and start wherever you need to. Saying it out loud or writing it down for the first time can be the first step to confronting the issue. You talk, we listen We listen to you and help you talk through your concerns, worries and troubles. We’ll focus on your thoughts and feelings rather than going into the details of what’s happened. Up to a million Brits moved to Spain for a better life, but after a huge financial crisis, crippling austerity and plummeting property prices, the dream may be over. Figures suggest that 90 thousand Brits resident in Spain left in the last year alone. Director Matt Rudge travels the coast to meet some of the last Brits standing: British business owners struggling to turn a profit, pensioners trapped in negative equity and reliant on the Spanish healthcare system, and young British migrant workers employed in Spanish bars and nightclubs. He meets some ex-pats determined to remain no matter what, and others who are resigned to returning to the UK.

But beneath the surface there are simmering tensions between the Spanish public and British immigrants. It seems the UK is far from the only country debating immigration at times of austerity, but in Spain it’s the Brits who are the immigrants.

Unfortunately these programmes rarely look at both sides of the situation

The golf societies venue for the 26th March 2015 was held at the Vistabella Golf Course. Eighteen or so members teed-off on a fine but rather cold and windy day. CLAPTONS GOLF SOCIETY By Kevin Williams La Peraleja welcomed us for our March Society day. Due to the threat of very bad weather, numbers were a little low. We were lucky the rain stayed away, but the very high winds and cold conditions made for a hard day’s golf, as was reflected in the scores. Everybody was glad to get back to the Clubhouse afterwards. Clair and Dean opened the restaurant and function rooms in March 2014 and business has been brisk in both restaurant and bar. The couple have lived in Spain for 15 years, Clair originally from Cork and Dean from Norwich, but an avid Spurs supporter. They have two children, Eva (2) and Olivia (1) and are supported by general manager Allan who is into rugby union via Ulster plus liking televised darts, particularly Phil Taylor. All are looking forward to two great evenings, each including a complimentary buffet and the ever popular raffle. Several league members have pointed out a growing habit of telling players how to finish during their throw. Whilst unheard of in the UK within organised darts it is quite prevalent in Spain, which I personally found surprising when starting to play league darts here. The actual rule is thus. A player may ask after each dart what is left to the referee (in most cases the chalker) but not how to obtain what is left. It’s the player´s responsibility to know how to finish. The problem we have is many players within our league and others have never played arrows prior to re-location, therefore not having learned the process of combination scoring to leave ideal doubles. The outcome is every Tom Dick and Harry (no finger pointing) shouting out alternative ways of finishing, in some cases the wrong way. If of course Tom shouts out a way of finishing which is incorrect and the thrower achieves the recommendation, the referee will not give the game. In

the case of any 501 match the exact amount of points must be achieved. On the other side of the coin a player will never learn how to count if he or she is constantly told how to finish. Our own league rule 8B states “Players may ask what is scored and what is left to either chalker or designated team member”, it doesn’t refer to how the player may achieve the remaining points. Being told how to finish can be an unfair advantage as the thrower doesn’t need to hesitate to re-calculate thus avoiding an interruption to his rhythm. The habit must be discouraged and will certainly never be permitted at semi and finals evening. Its Mens and Ladies Singles this week, the latter sponsored by the effervescent Alex Nikolov, who is supporting the event for the second season. Alex as many of us know is the multi lingual Bulgarian, some time dart player and full time husband and father to Donna and Natalia respectively. The league appreciates his support and recommend his excellent building qualities. The draw for both events has been kind to many of the league´s top players, as they have been drawn at separate venues. The outcome should be a fantastic semi finals for the girls with a similar outcome for the boys quarter finals both on 30th April at the Celler. Will Pat Abrams and Yvonne Rouffignac retain their respective titles? It wouldn’t surprise me if they did but strong opposition will come from Nick Spicer and Mike Smith for the boys, Pat Schofield and Bliss Wright contesting the girls. The aforementioned of course have to qualify with many opponents quite able and willing to take their place. Should be two very good events! On to League matters and a decent performance from the Pint Depot Kings and Gogarty´s earning both a point this week that has now determined 7th and 8th place in Division 1. The Kings were in fact 3 up through Gary Minor 100,119, Ian Sleath and John Crooks, Matt Cummins contributing a ton. Steve Woods 140, Kevin Procktor 100 and Gail Todd 81,75,85 doing their utmost to get on the score sheet. A nice performance from Cynthia Jevons 81,140 plus the double halted Gogarty´s slide. Steve Woods 126 and John Williams heavy scoring and D8 made it 3-2 with one to play before half time. Gogarty´s Pattisons, Christine and Richard really pounded the treble in an attempt to level, but Minor and Martyn Bynorth were their equals, the latter making it all square on D16. Pattison overcame Bynorth 2-0 for 4-3 followed by a real tussle between Dave Wright and Gail Todd, the Pint Depot man coming out on top winning two of three but both playing exceptional darts. The scoring continued with Procktor taking both legs playing Frankie “W” for 5-4. Cummins was unlucky not to ensure the draw with 140,100,81,83 opponent Williams taking 2 of 3 on D16 and D19, the game including 8 scores of 80+ and three tons. Woods gave a real captain´s performance against Crooks taking the third on D7 along with 125 and 140, to give Gogarty´s the lead for the first time 5-6. Minor, not a bad guy to rely on for a result did what was expected of him against Brian Newton. Minor took the first on D9 and then took out 70 (S10,S20,D20) for the draw and shared points. An excellent result from Que Pasa Kestrels at Breakaways makes them favourites for second spot in Division 2. An early 2-1 lead for Breakaways was reversed after the pairs, making it all square at the break, Gilly Kirby, Michelle Lane and Alan Preston 100,121 excelling. Del Lister for Breakaways ensuring his side stayed in the match. A fine opening singles from Ivan Jones 2x100 and a 62 out gave the hosts a slender advantage, quickly wiped out by Preston and Kirby. Lister 100,95,85 levelled for the Bears. Eddie Martin set up a possible win for the visitors on D9 to leave mister reliable Mike

LEADER By Paul Durrant

The Celler´s management trio Allan, Dean and Clare taking a break. Douglas ensuring the draw and point with an excellent 110 game shot (S20,T20,D15). The Jaguars hope of second spot took a knock as the Ale House continued their recent improvement. A 3-3 half time result would not have concerned Jaguars captain Tracey Simpson, but what followed most certainly did and may well cost the Junction second place. A nice 68 out in the triples plus a D16 out in the pairs from Wendy Hayward to go with Simone de Lacy´s fine efforts in the pairs with Lisa Ivill gave the hosts their three legs. Berney Whipday replied with two doubles, Karl Mallinson adding the third on D3. Unusually the Ale House were to take all six singles, Henrica Portugal D4 taking the first, Owen Attwood giving yet another fine display 85,100,D4 for the visitors fifth. Tony Woods ensured the Alers a point giving licensee Mallinson the glory of victory scoring 90,100 and D19 for the match and both points. Luke Yarnold 80,100,81,D20 continued his superb form leaving Whipday to wrap up the match on D16. Misfits jump two places after their victory over the Pint Depot Queens. It looked like a potential white wash at halfway, the Misfits leading 6-0, Cheryl McGlynn taking two of the doubles, John Ashworth two more, Pete Jones a D12 and Leah Chesworth the sixth on D5. The Queens always seem to get going at half time, but there is absolutely no truth that alcohol plays any part, this week being no exception. Her Reverence Queen Debbie pulled one back in the first single, then Margaret Griffiths enjoyed a fantastic 3 double out, a first for the league. Requiring 40 points super Maggie found D1, then D17 and with her third arrow slotted home D2 bang in the middle of the double. What a finish! McGlynn subdued the euphoria on D11 only for the noise level to increase as Rachael Broadhead hit D11 for the Queens third. Sonya Cooper made it 8 for the hosts, Lorraine Cox taking out an in-form Karl Cooper on D8. Meerkats and Hyenas move one step closer to their end of season show down, both winning fairly comfortably and firing on all cylinders. Pat Abrams and Lee Maiden were outstanding for the Kats, although Abrams had his fur ruffled by Mark Filer in the singles, the match going 3 legs with Filer winning two on D10 and D18 along with 4x100. Maiden´s 3x140, 122, 2x100 plus 4 game shots including a tasty 70 out (S10,D20,D10) an example of his consistency this term. Shirley Roberts showed Alex Nikolov how its done, beating the Bulgarian two of three with 140,100,83,95 plus D8 and D15. Busters gave a better performance than of late, illustrated by their 14 tons or more, highlighted by Filer´s 162 (T20,T20,T14) to leave 32. Hyenas took advantage of a depleted Porter House side gaining a 5-1 advantage by half way. Matt Jackson continues his form with an excellent victory over the outstanding Joe Miller 2-0. Cyril Harrison, John Eyre and Nick Spicer doing most of the damage for the Hyenas. Geoff Harvey aiding and abetting with a couple of doubles and consistent scoring. Brian Nash was the Porters main stay with 2x100,113 and 3 doubles.

es, EBT had built up an 11-point lead over Celta which they lost in Sunday morning’s first match against Levante 1 – 9. Another Catalan team, Comarcal, were now just three points behind EBT. Shaken but not stirred, the Torry men produced their best game, beating Diagonal 7 – 3 and the bottom team Joventut 8 – 2. Despite bowling well and winning 60% of the points in play, Levante’s men saw themselves bitterly relegated to First Division by only one point. LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY COMMITTEE TROPHY The first major trophy of the year was contested at Alenda on a course that is steadily improving. The recent warmer weather has resulted in a greener hue to the fairways. The day was pleasant enough with the threatened rain not appearing. The wind blew but the members were up to the challenge and many 30+ scores were recorded. After the game members returned to La Marina Sports Centre where an amazing paella awaited them. Many thanks to Paolo & Helena for keeping us so well fed! Results: Nearest the Pin Hole 3 Barry Thorogood, Hole 13 Graham Marriner, Hole 15 John Thompson

CLUB DE GOLF EL PARAISO AT LA MARQUESA. 22 members and guests teed it up at this delightful course set in the vale between Ciudad Quesada and Rojales. Showers were forecast but fortunately they didn’t materialise and without the wind of recent days the weather was perfect for golf. The condition of the golf course has really improved over the last few weeks although Hole 17 is still being played from the temporary tee, but the newly constructed, elevated tee should be in play soon, it looks very impressive. Although your first impression might be that this is an easy course, you will find that it is quite tricky, bogeys and double bogeys can appear on your card before you have realised it. This was the case for the winner of our Silver division Norwegian member, Ole Rong, making a double bogey on Hole 17 (it’s only a 117m par 3) but he still managed the best score of the day with his 36 pts. Alex Goslan returned 34 pts. to take 2nd place and Lars Zelman finished 3rd with a credible 30 pts. The Gold category members didn’t score quite so well and it needed only 31 pts. for Martin Simmons to take 3rd place with Ove Cederberg taking 2nd place on lower handicap also on 31 pts. but it was Martin’s wife Hillary who came up with the goods taking 1st place with a very good 33 points playing off 19 handicap. The N.T.P.’s were Hole 5 for any player: no one, Hole 11 Gold category members only: Chris Gray, Hole 15 any player: Martin Simmons, less than 6 inches for a hole in one) Hole 17 Swedish member Lenart Holmberg, all received a very nice bottle on Marques de Caceres Our thanks go to our sponsors for this event; La Marquesa golf and Country club and the Pro-Shop La Marquesa

DAVE ARCHER WINS SJGS PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Do the weather forecasters get paid? We left Torrevieja with a forecast that said it would be 80% precipitation (that’s the correct spelling!) and thunder storms. Well on the journey, no rain, just light cloud, when we arrived, the sun was shining and grown men were taking their clothes off, well waterproofs, exposing shorts. Good job the weather people do not get paid by results. They’d be bankrupt! It was a gorgeous sunny day and sun cream came out, probably for the first time this year.. As always Alicante Golf course was in good condition and played well and despite that the greens had been Hollow Tined the surfaces was good for putting. We played a 2 ball Better Ball Stableford and the scores were surprisingly good and if you did not have 41 points you were not in the prizes, which is what they should be when there are two of you have a crack at each hole. RUBY’S GOLF SOCIETY - BILL GRIGG MEMORIAL This week we held our final round for the Society’s player of the year at Riquelme. This was the 12th and final round of the Individual Stapleford from where we then take the six best scores. Going into the last round two players were tied at the top Dave Archer and Frank Murphy with Barry Beale just a point behind them. We the course in very good condition it was the weather that was not our friend as most of the round was played in the cold and damp the rain was mostly a fine drizzle so everyone was happy to get down the 18th and into the clubhouse. After the top two finished their rounds they were still level as neither player bettered any of their other scores so it went to the seventh best score and the Title went to Dave Archer for the second year running. Also a big well done to our Lady golfer of the year Christine Flanagan who did not play in the final round as she is away. The ladies is there best three scores and in second place was Jo Murphy well done to all the ladies taking part The next Society game will be the ROLL-UP game on Monday, 30th March 2015 at La SERENA. 1st Tee time - 9.20am. There will be NO Payday therefore if anyone wishing to play in this additional game please let me know by email including a buggy if you want one, this will help to ensure you have booked a place and in the confirmation of the Tee times & buggies with the course.

When we set out to Alenda on the Bill Grigg Memorial Trophy day Bill must have been looking down on us favourably, as the weather changed from stormy, wet and windy, to a pleasant calm day with some sunny intervals, which obviously helped the golf as there were some good scores returned. Again the course was in excellent condition which also helped. Nearest the pin on the Par 3's were John Goulder, Michelle Evans, Ray Muttocks and Marc Doherty, nearest the pin in two shot's was Bill Martin and nearest the pin in 3 was Steve Paul. Best front 9 went to Roy Stanley and best back to Ray Muttocks. The Bill Grigg Memorial Trophy went this year to Colin Fear who also won the gold division. Runner up and silver division winner was John Goulder. Back at the Med where John Grigg had laid on a splendid buffet the football card was won by John Goulder and the newsletter competition was won by Ivie Davies. Many thanks to the Med, and John Grigg for supplying the buffet and prizes. Our next outing is a Stapleford Trophy day at Altorreal on the 10th of April any one wishing to join us for this or any other fixture please put your name on the list at the Med or contact us at rubygolf@yahoo.co.uk

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Around and about the Golf Courses - Alenda The Alenda golf course situated in the foothills of the Sierra de las Aguilas mountains and is close to the city of Alicante has always been a favourite of both tourists and local golf societies alike offering a good quality course at competitive price. There is something on offer for all standards of golfer with generous wide fairways for the majority of holes BUT on the back nine there are some serious risk and reward holes that can result in easy birdies or a card destroyer. Those of you that have been here in Spain for more than a few years will remember the old finca style clubhouse at the foot of the hill but a number of years ago this was replaced by large modern clubhouse perched high on the hill overlooking the 9th green next to a covered 14 bay driving range. The course layout was switched at the time of the clubhouse opening moving around the sequence of holes with the original 1st hole now becoming the 9th hole. The only negative addition has been the construction of netting protection on the side of the 2nd hole to prevent damage to recently built properties which encroaches badly on the tee shot, particularly for people with a slice. Is it just me or would you ever consider purchasing a 1st line golf course property and not expect the possibility of the property being hit by stray golf balls! Alenda absorbed many of the costs associated with the 'crisis' and 'IVA Tax' raise but have recently been forced by the financial circumstances to increase their prices. This has given them the opportunity to make changes to the course fabric with new bunkers being sculptured on the 6th,7th, 8th and 9th holes which will make these holes even more challenging. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. A W ELCO ME POINT, BUT NOT ENOUGH SC REQUENA ..............0 CD TORREVIEJA ..........0 Under the guidance of new manager Pedreno, Torry visited lowly Requena on Sunday, still buzzing from that ground breaking 6 goal massacre of CD Acero the week before. And now, with a place in the play offs once again very much in everybody’s thoughts, sitting as they do just 6 pts behind 4th placed Villarreal, a feel good factor was once again very evident throughout the whole squad. It was back in early November that a home score draw with Requena started the rot....it was the beginning of a poor run of form for Torry, one which was to continue until the end of the year, but this new look side appear to have broken loose from the shackles that seemed responsible for the inconsistent form they have suffered for large parts of the current campaign. Admittedly one game doesn’t make a season but what we saw last Sunday was enough to provide the encouragement to the supporters and the confidence to the playing squad going into the game against lowly Requena. And Torry got off to an encouraging start, there was a lot more assurance and expression from the players who worked tirelessly to build on the form shown during Pedreno’s short term in office. With early opportunities falling to Cesar and Carrasco things looked bright during the early part of the game. But unfortunately, despite the

pressure, the visitors had nothing to show, other than hard work and determination, going into the interval. The best that Requena could muster were strong appeals for a penalty when the referee brushed aside their protestations after Alexis had meted out a heavy challenge on striker Soriano. For the most part, however, the running was made by Torry, a fierce drive from Burguillos on the half hour, Cesar unlucky to be adjudged offside with only keeper Juarez to beat, but at half time, the signs were still encouraging as the players trooped off with 45 still to come. Unfortunately though our hopes weren’t replicated in the Torry performance with only the agility of Oscar keeping them in the game, indeed it was one excellent save from top scorer Ubach which certainly rescued a point at the death. There were opportunities, however, and that is perhaps the major difference, but the visitors were let down by poor finishing in a game from which they expected to pick up all 3 pts. Two home games to look forward to next week, both of which are at the Vicente Garcia, the first on Wednesday evening against mid table CF Cullera, kicking off at 8pm and then on Sunday against promotion chasing UD Beniganim, a game that gets underway at 5pm with nothing less than 6 points necessary to keep the Torry season alive.

QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY Last Wednesday the Society traveled south to play one of the exPolaris World course, Saurines which is described as a “desert” course. If you missed the fairways you didn´t end up in sand which is what I thought deserts were supposed to contain, but in grit and if you were more unfortunate in pampas grass with the likelihood of a lost ball. A lot of balls were lost on the day. The course is great if you hit a straight ball but if you don´t it is a real slog. The greens were very challenging, undulating, fast and true and a good test of players putting ability. The big bonus for the 18 hardy souls who turned out was that it did not rain. It was forecast to until 2.00 pm and everyone turned up in their wet weather gear. The rain cleared on the journey down to the course and there wasn´t a spot during play. The strong wind I think kept it away but made conditions difficult. One funny incident worthy of note. Societies are notorious for slow play with their generally aging membership. When our four-ball tee´d off on the 3rd tee there was a snail next to the yellow markers. When we tee´d off on the 4th tee there was again a snail next to the yellow markers. Was it the same snail, surely not. We were a bit slow but definitely moved a bit quicker than at a snails pace. Roy Kavanagh had a bit of bad luck on the day. His driver was sending the ball right all the time on the first nine holes and he couldn´t figure out why and then on the 10th hole he swung and made contact and the club head flew off. The competition was an individual stableford. The winner on the day was Ronnie “The Brave” Spiers who has to be the societies most improved player over the past year. The lessons he has had back home in the land where golf was invented and the new clubs are starting to pay dividends. Me headed the leader-board with 29 points. In second place on

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY By Mike Chapman We started the week with a 4 ball Texas Scramble where we saw a magnificent club record winning score of 53.9 which included 11 birdies. The successful team comprised Terry Field, Geoff Biggerstaff, Rod Doel and Brian Dent. In second place over 5 shots behind with a score of 59.5 which on any other day would be in with a chance of winning were the team of Bryan Neal, Mike Chapman, Alan Douglas and Marleen Billen. With Wednesday being a washout the sun finally shone on Friday for the third round of our Joker Stableford Eclectic competition and it was our current leader Rod Doel who won scoring an excellent 44 pts which must surely extend his lead at the top once all the number crunching has been completed. This included a superb birdie on his Joker hole, the par four 11th, to earn 8 pts. The players in the top four positions who all scored 40 pts or more were as follows: 1st Rod Doel 44 pts 2nd Terry Field 42 pts 3rd Tom Hardie 41 pts 4th Joyce McClusky 40 pts

C/B was big John Dunnion, one of the 2 big Man Utd supporters in the society. In 3rd place again with 29 points was the very steady Irishman David McSweeney and in 4th place “iron” Brian Smith. The “Nearest the Pin” winners were Darryll Wright, David McSweeney and Ronnie Spiers. After the game the members returned to the society base, the Quesada Country Club for a drink or two and a tasty buffet provided by mine hosts Dave and Anita. The next game is on Wednesday 8 April at the course will a lot of water, La Serena. Players have been advised to pack a few extra balls into their golf bags. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the Membership Secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.
