EASTER CELEBRATION SUCCESS
Tel: 96 673 0057
After a bumper weekend around the area, the towns and cities along the coast have started to return to normality, as one of the busiest Easter holidays for some time came to a close. The DGT traffic department had planned for an estimated 13.5 million journeys on the roads during the weekend, an estimated 4.7% increase on the same period last year. The celebrations in Orihuela utilised modern technology this year, with a dedicated website set up offering pic-
tures, videos and guides, as well as route maps and other information which would allow visitors from around the world to research their expectations via www.semanasantaorihuela.com, supporting the status of International Tourist Interest that Orihuela has achieved. Instagram also played a big part this year, with a special hashtag being used to group pictures together. #semanasantaorihuela2015 was the tag to put on pictures, with the tourism department promising to choose the best from the selection and a prize on offer for the winner. Buses were provided from the Orihuela Costa to the city for coastal residents to enjoy the celebrations. The first bus will ran on Maundy Thursday to coincide with the night time solemn parade, the Procesión De La Hermandad Del Silencio. On Good Friday a bus took residents to watch the Procesión General De La Pasión, and on Easter Saturday, a bus took visitors to the Procesión Del Santo Entierro De Cristo. With processions taking place right through the period, it was those on Thursday and Friday that were the most dramatic. The streets of Orihuela were plunged into darkness late at night for the solemn procession on Thursday, with the silence only being broken by the sound of a drum and a horn as the emotion of the respect that the parade represented was felt in the hearts of those watching. Sunday was a day of celebration, as the procession of jubilation took to the streets, accompanied by the noise of beating drums, to bring the fiesta to a close for another year. Not unlike Christmas, for many
Tuesday, 7th April, 2015 Easter is about overindulgence as much as any religious message that it may represent, as chocolate eggs are bought and eaten in abundance, but for those perhaps unable to enjoy the little luxuries, help is also at hand at this time of year. Food collections for the needy have been taking place around the area. In fact, the Hermandad del Silencio y Oración group, from the Orihuela town of el Huerto, collected 280 kilos of food which has been handed over to the Caritas organisation. The members of the brotherhood came up with the idea that all 38 of the bearers carrying the Cristo del Silencio would join in a solidarity drive. Having become established in 1942, this is the first year they have tried such a scheme, but vow to repeat it every year on account of the success. The success of Easter also looks set to be good news for the tourism industry too. Ordinarily, a busy Easter means an even busier summer. The last few years has seen steady growth in the area and this year looks set to break records once again.

NEW REPORTS CRITICAL OF SPAIN TRANSPORT SYSTEMS
The Two paragon’s of Spain’s transport system, the AENA National Airport Authority and AVE High Speed Train Network are both badly underachieving according to recent reports. Only 14 of Spain’s 48 AENA run airports are currently turning in a profit while every single AVE high-speed rail line is making a multi million euro loss with costs “neither beneficial to businesses nor society,” and failing to compensate passenger savings in airline tickets or time spent on the road. The AENA report was made in their submission to the CNMV stock market watchdog following the company’s stock exchange debut that has forced it to become more transparent in its accounts while the AVE report was compiled by the Foundation for the Studies of Applied Economics (Fedea), which conducted an analysis of the major AVE routes. The AENA report says that Madrid’s Adolfo SuárezBarajas International Airport leads the group in terms of revenue although Barcelona’s El Prat generated the highest pre-tax profits, followed by Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife Sur and Gran Canaria. Alicante showed a profit of just over 50 million euro for the year while Murcia/San Javier reported a 0.6 million euro loss, understandable, one would think, in view of the negative press regularly rolled out by the Murcia government as they try to convince the public of the merits of opening Corvera. The airports that reported the biggest losses before taxes last year were those in La Palma, Santiago de Compostela and Vigo. However as they are not part of the AENA network, the little-used Castellón and Ciudad Real airports – both of which have come to be viewed as white elephants because of the huge amounts of public money that local politicians spent on building them, did not feature in the report, neither of course did Corvera for the same sorts of reasons. In terms of earnings before interest and taxes, Madrid-Barajas brought in €567 million followed by El Prat (€510 million) and Palma de Mallorca (€181 million) while four airports ended the year with pre-tax losses of over €10 million: La Palma (-
€18 million); Santiago (-€15 million); Vigo (€10.85 million); and Pamplona (-€10.5 million). Meanwhile the AVE report from the Foundation for the Studies of Applied Economics (Fedea), said that not one AVE high-speed rail line is turning a profit with multi-billion investments made by past and current governments way off track The study looked at traffic on AVE’s four major rail lines: Madrid-Barcelona, Madrid-Andalusia, Madrid-Levante and Madrid-North which, together, carry 70 percent of all high-speed rail passengers. The network covers 2,515 kilometers with, in an election year, the Public Works Ministry recently announcing, an additional 1,200 kilometers connecting eight further provincial capitals, under construction. Only China has more rail lines. However, the number of travelers in Spain who use the high-speed rail service is much lower than in other countries. Researchers determined that there were 11,800 passengers for every kilometer compared with the 158,121 passengers per kilometer in Japan and 61,400 in France. Fedea estimates that Spanish governments – including the current one – have spent more than €40 billion in constructing the rail system, with another €12 billion going to related projects. (Fedea) said that the current demand for train services wasn’t enough to recover the investments made by past and current Spanish governments saying that such huge investments were made purely for “political gain” “Our conclusions put in question the lack of fundamental economic reasons to make such investments in high-speed rail for Spain,” the researchers said.

SYRIA RECRUITS Two young teenagers were arrested early Tuesday in northeastern Spain, the same morning they planned to travel to Syria to fight with Islamist militants there, the Spanish interior ministry said. Police arrested the two, both aged under 16, and another two suspects in a raid in the Mediterranean city of Badalona, about 11 kilometers from Barcelona. The ministry said the teenagers had dropped out of school in Badalona and begun studying at an Islamic center in Morocco. They were due to travel Tuesday morning through Morocco to Turkey and from there onto Syria with the full knowledge of those close to them including their mother, said the ministry.
BENIDORM SHARK WATCH BRITS heading to Benidorm and the Spanish costas for Easter have been warned to watch for sharks. Three were found washed up on the shore of the resort last month. Two sinister-looking threshers and a threemetre bluntnose sixgill shark were caught in fishing nets. But locals think tourism bosses are trying to keep it quiet as thousands of holidaymakers are due to arrive for the holiday. Last year saw a string of spinner shark sightings near Benidorm’s main beach. A local said: “It’s not unusual for sharks to be spotted every now and then. But three in the space of a few days is a worry.

NEW LOW COST FLIGHT ROUTES FOR SPAIN
Norwegian airlines have continued their rapid expansion plan, adding four new routes during the course of last week, including another transatlantic route, namely the addition of weekly (Tuesdays) departures from Copenhagen to Orlando. The exciting news for Spain however is the new route connections to the UK, with flights from Madrid and Málaga to Birmingham International. GERMAN’S LUCKY CASE Officers from the National Police successfully located and retrieved a suitcase that had been left in error at Alicante-Elche airport by a German passenger. The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when the tourist alerted the police to the fact that the suitcase had been misplaced outside the terminal building. The police organized a search and located the suitcase which was resting on a bench outside the second floor of the airport building. What is particularly significant in this particular lucky find is that the case contained 8,000 euro in cash and a laptop computer. The suitcase was successfully delivered to the
relieved owner which, according to the police, had been “carelessly forgotten” by the owner.

FORMBY’ S LOST LO VE LOS Montesinos author Andrew Atkinson is a step closer to getting his book 'Formby's Lost Love' published after a London publisher, Austin Macauley, based in Canary Wharf, has asked for the complete manuscript of 'Formby's Lost Love' following a synopsis submission. "The Austin Macauley board of editors have reported back favourably regarding the initial submission," said Senior Editor Hayley Knight. "We now wish to view the complete manuscript in its final form. 'Formby's Lost Love' tells the previously untold story of school teacher Pat Howson, who was engaged to ukulele legend George Formby in 1961. Formby, who died aged 56, days before their planned wedding in March 1961, bequeathed the majority of his Estate to Pat, equating to over £2m today. In the following decade Religious teacher Pat faced years of Court wranglings over the will; the split of her parents; the death of her mother, and her own untimely death of ovarian cancer, aged 46, in 1971. "I am thrilled to have received notification from Austin Macauley asking for the complete manuscript of 'Formby's Lost Love'," said Andrew, who has a property in Los Montesinos. "It has been 54 years since George Formby and Pat Howson were engaged to be married - thwarted after Britain's ukulele star's fatal heart attack," said Andrew, 57. "I have researched Pat Howson's life story, from being a young girl, to the grave, with in-depth interviews with those who knew her best," said Andrew. A decade after Formby's death Pat was set to enter a Convent and become a nun, to finally escape years of turmoil and hell, after challenges to his will. "Interviews and revelations have been undertaken with Pat Howson's close friends, and her solicitor, who talks about her for the first time in 44 years," said Andrew. "Pat Howson was diagnosed with ovarian cancer - and died six weeks later," said Andrew. "Pat's untold life story is one of sorrow, tears and sadness, having been thrown into the limelight through George Formby," said Andrew. Formby's link to Spain was with his hit: 'The Lancashire Toreador' in 1937. Formby's 'naughty' lyrics included: 'Don Pedro, the big bull-fighting hero, The Lancashire Toreador. 'I met-a charming senor-eta. She said, 'To love you I can never', then kissed me good-bye for ever. That night, as she retired, she locked her bedroom door. 'She started to undress and timidly she looked
round, Said, 'Thank God, I am rid of him for he's homeward bound', But when she pulled the bed clothes down now guess what she found? Why The Lancashire Toreador. 'Don Pedro, the big bull-fighting hero, The Lancashire Toreador. I scare 'em, no mercy ever spare 'em. In the dead of night I ramble, Spanish castle walls I scramble. 'I saw a shadow above a girl in her boudoir. I climbed up her balcony, it started to sway. She shouted, 'Murder! there's a bandit, spare my life, pray'. 'But when my castanets I rattled she said, 'Hooray! It's The Lancashire Toreador'. HEALTHY FOAL BORN AT ROJALES HORSE RESCUE CENTRE Arthur just 4 days old
The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has welcomed a healthy foal into the world, in a happy ending to a terrible case of animal abuse and neglect. The little colt, named Arthur, was born late on March 29 to proud mum Guinevere, one of three terribly thin mares and a stallion rescued from Granada last December. “The owner of these horses was a breeder and because of the financial crisis he literally stopped feeding them. The police prosecuted and then a court order was raised and we were asked to bring them here all the way from Granada,” rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding said. The rescue was a joint operation with Malaga-based rescue charity El Refugio del Burrito, which took at least four donkeys into custody. All animals found at the Granada property were severely malnourished and at least one dead foal was found. “We were very apprehensive about this birth because the mare really was in a terrible condition when she arrived three months ago but, with the good food and nutrition she has received since, little Arthur looks to have arrived safe and well,” Sue
said. “Another of the Granada mares, Morgana, is due to give birth in the next few weeks and we all have our fingers crossed that her birth will go well, too.” Donations and sponsorships to help continue this important work are gratefully welcomed. Every cent donated or spent in the rescue centre’s network of eight charity shops across the Alicante province goes towards the feeding and care of the more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the centre. Donations of furniture, clothing and bric-a-brac to stock the shops are welcome. Please call 652 021 980 for more information about furniture pick-ups and volunteering. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre opens to the public for free on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. The first horse tour begins at 2pm. EHCRC is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. For directions and details on how to sponsor horses, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net

CAMPAIGN TO REMOVE ILLEGAL WASTE TIPS C.L.A.R.O. Councillor Bob Houliston presented a Motion in the full Orihuela council meeting (Plenary) on 25 March calling for a campaign to remove the ugly, illegal waste tips which are widespread throughout Orihuela Costa and elsewhere in the municipality. These tips, which are on public as well as private land, contain everything from builder’s rubble, discarded furniture, sanitary ware, television sets and, in Orihuela Costa, garden waste. It is of course illegal to dump waste and the Town Hall has a clear legal obligation to remove what is dumped. However, over the years, those who dump have not been caught and the Town Hall has been half-hearted in clearing up the mess. Once they are allowed to appear, further rubbish is dumped on top. They grow to an unsightly size and attract vermin. The result is a whole series of eyesores which are offensive to residents, a danger to the environment and present a negative image to tourists and holidaymakers. Bob Houliston’s motion called for a crash programme to clean up these illegal waste tips before the holiday season starts and measures to prevent dumping in the future, including information campaigns, a recycling centre (ecoparque) away from housing and applying the fines provided for in the local by-laws. The motion was presented in a moderate manner not criticising and putting the blame on the current government since the problem goes back many years. In the course of the debate both the government and the opposition Popular Party expressed their support. The only party which opposed was Pedro Mancebo’s Centro Liberal Renovador Party (CLR). They adopted their usual negative and critical attitude, rejecting the proposal simply because it was put forward by C.L.A.R.O. The motion was overwhelmingly approved and it is now up to the government to try and follow up their support by taking measures to clean up these unwelcome, unhealthy eyesores.

CARTAGENA FIESTA SEEKS INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION The council of Cartagena unanimously approved a decision to have the Carthaginians and Romans Fiesta recognised as being of International Tourist Interest.
Therefore, the government team will now notify the Turepaña tourism body of the support, which will see the profile of the annual event raised from being of national to worldwide importance. The fiesta is held each year to commemorate the capture of the city in 209 BC by the Roman troops of Escipion, marking a festive week in which alternate days are devoted to one or the other groups. The wedding of Hannial and Himilce or the day of the Roman Circus, with its gladiators and wild animals, lead into the great parade on Saturday, the big day of the fiesta, when all the troops and legions march through the city. The 2015 date is still to be confirmed, but once it has been set then it is a must for the diary as a unique event to be thrown into the past in an ancient city such as Cartagena, surrounded by historic and military infrastructure and home to roman ruins which can also be visited all year round, including a vast amphitheatre.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
The Scourge of Meetings I am not a great lover of meetings - any meetings. I am sure that this comes from my days as a teacher when endless staff meetings were the order of the day. I remember hours spent discussing sports days, Christmas parties and the colour of paint for classrooms, when I would much rather have been marking pupils' books and planning lessons for the next busy day. This is not to say that sports days and Christmas parties were unimportant, they were, but most issues could have been dealt with efficiently in minutes rather than the three hours often wasted after a busy school day, when most good teachers are exhausted. It was after reading an article in an American management journal, lovingly produced for the American ‘How to be a manager in three easy lessons’ market, that I picked up a valuable nugget of advice that was to guide my future views and actions towards meetings. The theory was that no meeting should last for more than one hour; after all, anything that couldn't be dealt with within one hour was not important enough to discuss anyway. It was true, and I resolved that in my future career as a head teacher, and later as a school inspector, I would follow this guidance whenever possible. This resolute approach to chairing meetings, not surprisingly, met with
some initial resistance. The usual practice of staff drifting in late to meetings, making a cup of coffee, chatting about the day, and complaining about parents and children had to come to an abrupt end. After all, discussions of this kind could continue after our meeting, but never before. My colleagues quickly learned to focus upon a pre-prepared and manageable agenda, which allowed for succinct discussion and to focus upon only what was important. Meetings took place under a strict one-hour rule, agenda items were routinely and efficiently dealt with, leaving time to focus upon what was really important, teaching and learning, as well as going home at a reasonable time. Endless discussions about Christmas parties and sports days became a thing of the past. All this had to come to an abrupt end when I moved to Spain, where community meetings take place to deal with issues that may affect the residents of an apartment block or community area. In theory, it is a good and democratic idea, but once again, I was faced with endless meetings called to resolve such issues as lifts not working, the electric door to the communal garage not opening, and the eccentricity of the electricity supply. Meetings scheduled to start at 7.30pm eventually began at 8.30pm, with participants coming and going, babies crying, as well as texting and answering mobile phones during the meeting. The lack of an agenda, and roaming from one subject to another, as well as the whole procedure taking place in machine gun Spanish, meant that I eventually left the meetings, four hours later, exhausted, bewildered and very angry. Last night we attended a village meeting to discuss a number of issues. We felt it was important to show our faces and share concern about the issues to be discussed; after all, such meetings are an important part of local democracy. Eventually, the meeting started; there were several
angry monologues from local worthies, together with many interruptions and much shouting from a number of residents. After one hour we slipped away quietly to the bar next door to enjoy a pizza and a few drinks, whilst the meeting continued into the early hours of the morning. I am so pleased that I read that article in the American management journal; it has given me many hours of my life back. ILLEGAL WALKWAY Dear Editor, I would like to correct your editorial in last Monday’s Leader:‘THE SELFISH OWNERS WHO CONSIDER THEMSELVES ABOVE THE LAW’ did NOT erect the perimeter fence 20 years ago to cut off the walkway to the general public. It was built in 1985 by the developer when our urbanisation was built on what was then waste land on top of the cliff, indeed for many years the army used the land for exercises. There never was nor ever been a ‘public domain walkway’ along that stretch of cliff .The existing walkway from Campoamore was put in about 15 years ago up to our fence. If, the fence was erected illegally in the last 20 years why has it taken them 20 years to do something about it, are they really that incompetent? The truth is it only came to a head when Agua Marina was built and the developer made wild promises and got the politicians involved, who saw this as an opportunity to generate votes – once started the political bandwagon had to keep going to save face With regard to the latest action taken by the Town Hall the reason Snr Zapata was
distancing himself from the activity and refused to comment any further is he has acted illegal in removing the wall. He has stated that the courts have ruled in favour of the Town Hall on two counts, this is completely false. At the risk of upsetting some of the councillors or local politicians perhaps you could print this correction Regards Brian Honess President Bellavista 1
LOOKING TOWARD THE LOCAL ELECTIONS As a former CLR voter I was dismayed a few months ago to read that Pedro Mancebo was advocating the erection of a statue to the former King Juan Carlos. Juan Carlos' monarchy has been riddled with scandals. His daughter and son-inlaw have been charged with tax and fraud and the former King went on a jolly to Africa with a woman who was not his wife to shoot elephants. He has previous form in killing defenceless animals as he is reported to have shot a drugged tame bear in Russia for a bit of sport. Laughably he was President of the Spanish branch of the World Wildlife
Fund until, by a vote of 94%, the membership removed him. Thankfully he has abdicated in favour of his son but any good he did in introducing democracy to Spain after Franco has been dwarfed by the monster of a monarchy he created. Needless to say, as an opponent of animal cruelty, I shall not be voting for CLR and King Juan Carlos in the forthcoming election. This issue of the Leader only serves to confuse voters further by printing 12 lines on page 6 indicating that Green Party officials are facing corruption charges only to contradict them in what appears to be a half page advertisement for the CLR Party on page 12, albeit with an "explanatory" editor's note at the foot of the article. If I continue to read Leader editorials I will probably be so confused I will end up not voting at all. As the Leader seems to be a supporter of CLR I don't expect this letter to be printed but I'm sending it anyway just to get the matter off my chest. Malcolm Drew (By email) Hi Malcolm The article you read was actually a press release from CLR’S Ray Kearney. I like to think that The Leader offers all parties the opportunity to get their mes-
SPANISH DRIVING LICENCE
So my advise to people who are thinking of changing to a Spanish Driving Licence is to go to the Police Station first and get the necessary certificate with the hope of only needing 1 visit to Trafico. J. Waddington
Being a resident of Spain, and being told that it is now the law, I have applied for a Spanish driving licence. I had my medical and took all the necessary paper work to Trafico only to be told that now I must go to The National Police Station in Orihuela and obtain a "CERTIFICACION DE LA OFFICINA DE EXTRANJERIA, DE QUE ES RESIDENTE LEGAL EN ESPAÑA." (a certificate from the foreign office that I am a legal resident of Spain). Apparently a Residencia Certificate, Padron, Unility Bills and all the other papers I possess do not qualify these days. I hotfooted it to the Police Station to be told that I can only make an appointment for about 10days time and before my appointment must pay my fees at the bank. All this now in place I await to get my certificate and then when Trafico rings me I can return with the piece of paper I was short of and then my application can be processed.
We were always under the impression we could let our dogs run on the beaches from October to March, and have been doing this at La Mata and Guardamar. However, we have now heard of people being fined at La Mata, seems a bit mean especially as no-one is on the beaches and you clean any mess they make, what is the harm! Our dogs love to run on the beach, it's about the only place they can stretch out and have space to play. They never go in the water so that's not a problem. The only other place is Mar Azul, and you can't drive your car in any more, but you can still walk through. A dog friendly beach would be fabulous for our two little dogs, and lots of other dogs too judging by the number I see on the beach in winter time. Barbara Dean

CARRYING GAS CONTAINERS Although the winter months are coming to an end, there is still a chill in the air, and many people in Spain still rely on bottled gas to heat their homes, and many more rely on bottled gas for cooking. Although the gas supply companies will deliver the bottles to your home, many people find it more convenient to pick up their own supply at many of the outlets across the country, exchanging the empty bottles for full ones, but in order to do this, we have to think about the safety and security implications of carrying a potentially lethal canister. Depending on their size and weight, the canisters can be very heavy as they are filled with pressurised gas. At home, care should be taken as to where they are stored, in well ventilated places, away from heat and ignition sources, far away from toxic materials and always in an upright position. In the car, it is equally crucial to take the necessary steps to ensure your safety and the safety of other road users. Spanish law states that you can carry 2 gas bottles in the car, and they must be carried in an upright, vertical position. You must also
take necessary measure to ensure that the canisters are secured in the vehicle and cannot move during the journey. The law also states that when you are carrying gas canisters, it is forbidden to park the vehicle in an underground car park. You should also check with your local supply company for their recommendations for storage and carriage, as gas canisters can pose a major threat if not handled correctly, but are perfectly safe if the advice is followed. Here is the Royal Decree which relates to carrying Gas in the car...
BOOST FOR UK CAR INDUSTRY Britain’s booming car manufacturing industry has received yet another huge boost with three major manufacturers announcing UK investments worth more than £1 billion in the past week. Honda, Jaguar Land Rover and the London Taxi Company have each made announcements of funding to build new vehicle models, amounting to a total of £1.05 billion. The latest announcements, which come on the back of a total of £7 billion committed in 2013 and 2014, are yet more evidence of the continuing renaissance in UK car production. In 2014, more than 1.5 million cars were produced in the UK – an increase of 50% since 2009, and the sector’s best performance since 2007. The latest announcements include: 26 March: Jaguar Land Rover announces £600million new investment into its West Midlands operations, covering Castle Bromwich and Whitley sites. 26 March: Coventry-based London Taxi Company reveals a £250 million investment – as well as the creation of 1,000 jobs – as it prepares for production of a new range of ultra low emission taxis. 31 March: Honda unveils a £200 million spending plan with its Swindon plant to become the global production hub for the next-generation Honda Civic five-door. Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said, “It has been a fantastic week for UK automotive, with more than £1 billion earmarked by vehicle manufacturers for new model production that will drive further growth for the sector. Honda’s decision to build its next generation Honda Civic, a global car in an important and growing segment, here in the UK caps off a record six days - the first time three manufacturers have announced nine-figure investments over such a short period of time.”

GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB
On Tuesday 31 March Greenlands held its annual Club Championships Presentation Dinner Dance at El Prado ,San Miguel. Attendance was in the mid-sixties and most of the prize winners were able to attend. You will recall that the competition winners were announced in last weeks edition. The presentation of trophies was the first order of business for the evening. The trophies are splendid affairs and some of the lady winners of the larger items were struggling to hold them, however, a winner is a winner and all the recipients were suitably posed for their presentation photo with our new President, Chris Dewer. After the formal presentation our retiring President, Steve Westall assisted by Chris made floral presentations to some of the retiring lady members of his long serving committee. Specifically, and in no particular order, Cas Thomas (secretary), Jill Collins (social secretary) & Lynne Greenland (treasurer). Formal thanks were also expressed to Barbara Doran our retiring Membership Secretary's Secretary. After the presentation individual choices for an excellent supper were served with panache and a willing smile by the hard working front-ofhouse staff of El Prado The evening was rounded off by dancing to around midnight to music by 'Diverse'.

MAZARRON BOWLS CLUB Sunday 29th March Mazarron BC played in the President's Cup at home against Indalo BC. Although Mazarron have been flying high with their recent successful results both in the SABA and CBBA Leagues they knew they couldn't take anything for granted against a very experienced club like Indalo. Mazarron has never won the President's Cup in the previous 8yrs it's been played for so, with the
sun shining and nothing to lose, the challenge began. There were certainly some very close drawn games but equally there were two or three very impressive scores achieved by Mazarron in their first win in this competition since it began. The final results gave Mazarron an excellent 5 rinks to 3 win and 171 points to 128.
CARP-R-US CLUB NEWS This week the Clubs anglers fished Round 5 of the Spring series on the River Segurra in Benijofar. In the beginning it was cloudy, but it cleared and was sunny during the day. Considering that the river was flooded there on Monday, it was a surprise to find it three feet down on the morning, exposing mud flats, not making the fishing easy. Winner on the day was Stan Roberts with 3.36kg, second was Steve Fell with 2.26kg, in third place was Steve Collins with 1.36kg and in fourth place was Graham Leadley with 0.94kg. The match on 9th April will be on the Eden canal, and the following weeks venue will be decided at our meeting on Sunday. The next Quiz night is on Tuesday 7th April commencing at 7.30. The cost of entry is 1â‚Ź per person and teams of 6 or less can take part. The next Club meeting is on 19th April with the Committee meeting at 10.30 followed by the General meeting at 11.00. The clubs home is the Bar El Alto La Dolores which is just off the N332 between La Mata and Guardamar near the Repsol garage. Tuesday, 7th April, 2015 ADVERTISING HOTLINE 966 73 0057 www.yourlocalnewspaper.info LEADER MOVING FORWARD WITH COSTA COBRA RFC A GOOD DAY’S SAILING ON THE MAR MENOR
It has been another good week for Costa Cobras RFC with more new players joining the club from U10’s and seniors of different nationalities. We now nearly have enough players for U14’s and seniors to run a 7’s team and all of this in just 8 weeks and all age groups from U10’s to seniors gaining more players on a weekly basis, all of this thanks to the fun day few weeks ago and the hard work all of the members of the club have put in, from parents to players alike, a true family run club back to the good old basic ethics of this great sport. After Easter we are hoping to try and organise some 7’s or maybe even 10-a-side matches against local teams all depending on the number of new players that join in over the next few weeks. This will give the players some valuable experience, as the vast majority have never played rugby before. So come on down and join in and help push the club to the next level, our club members range at the moment from 7-58 year olds and have never played before so just goes to show you are never too young or old to start. We train on Monday and Wednesday from 18.00-
19.30 for the juniors, while the seniors will be training from 20.00-21.30. But over the Easter period we are not training on Monday 6 April, but will be back to normal on Wednesday 8 April. All ages, gender and nationalities are welcome, from beginners to experienced players, the more the merrier, as we are based on the true traditional ethics of the sport. So come along and join the newest rugby team on the Costa Blanca, also team bonding after training in the nearest bar for a drink and chat, just how rugby should be. So get those boots out and come on down to Daya Vieja sports ground and join in the rugby revolution of 2015, with the Rugby World Cup to look forward to as well, get into this great sport. For more information about the club contact myself, Dutch, on 692 767 242 or Robert on 697 286 416. Also I am back down at Zoco market on Sunday again from 09.00-13.30, so come on down and find more out about the club and rugby in the area. Sunday March 29th, the second of the SAMM Spring Series race days, saw 8 boats come to the start line for both races on a lovely sunny and warm day. For the first race the wind was 7kts with stronger gusts and quite marked shifts which made the conditions challenging, especially for the dinghies. Final results on corrected time saw a clean sweep of the top 3 places by the two Sailfish 18’s and the Balaton of the Balaton Group, with the Catamaran 4th. By the second race the wind had increased to 10kts but again with marked shifts and gusts of up to about 18kts. These were perfect conditions for the big Catamaran and unsurprisingly she finished in
LOS NIETOS GOLF SOCIETY AT HACIENDA Thirteen-handicapper Iain Furness kept up his recent run of good form by winning Los Nietos Golf Society's April competition with points to spare. Eighteen members and one guest took part at Hacienda Riquelme and were joined by wives, partners and friends for the presentation dinner at El Fraile bar and restaurant, Los Nietos. Iain, who has seen his handicap tumble in recent months, scored 35 Stableford points to win by five points from 13-handicapper Trevor Beechey, who picked up the prize for nearest the pin on hole five. In third place was Pat Hurley with 23 points from a handicap of 19. Per Stokken won the nearest the pin prize for the 17th hole. Non-swimmer Tom Wall won the Golden Snorkel Trophy for falling ln a pond on the ninth and Peter Crook took the life-saver award for pulling him out. the top spot. Second was the Sailfish 18 ‘Sirocco’ and third, a great performance in the trying conditions, the Laser 2000 ‘Shoestring Dos’. A close look at the results tables will reveal some very close finish times between boats, the smallest gaps being 5, 22 and 36 seconds. This seems to indicate that, in the main, the club handicaps being used are reasonably accurate. A most memorable day, especially for Ingo Wilson and Heinz Lenhard sailing the Laser 2000 ‘Shoestring Tres’ who spent as much time in the water as on it, by capsizing three times during the day. Mens and Ladies Singles Qualifiers to Ccompete in Semi-Finals On 30th April at The Celler (Formerly Decades) All competitions are now at the semi final stage after this week´s preliminary round play off of both Mens and Ladies Singles. Some familiar faces have qualified in the race for individual honours this term, former champion Sonya Cooper joins last year´s runner up Leah Chesworth, whilst current Merit Table champ Simone de Lacy qualifies with fellow Jaguar Pat Schofield in the last four. Not a bad line up and difficult to predict a favourite. Ms. Schofield will certainly be in the running, she has been playing well all season and jointly holds this term´s highest check out on 158 with Nick Spicer. The Mens category is even more difficult to determine the winner. Many will favour current holder Meerkat Pat Abrams, who is just about finding his explosive form of last term. The Kat will be looking for four titles this season, League, Cup, Singles and Triples but there is one man who could prevent him from taking three of these titles, Nick Spicer. He figures in all bar the triples and whilst the League title may look beyond the Hyenas, its not a foregone conclusion. A Spicer/ Abrams final would be really special, but lets not forget Mark Filer of Busters. He has done it all before and can certainly match the Hub duo in the scoring department. Out of the remaining five, Alex Nikolov and John Eyre probably have the best chance of honours, the latter finding some form of late with the Hyenas. I have to make Del Kingsbury, Kelvin Angel and John Lane an outside bet in this field, but the favoured five should not be complacent if drawn against these boys, because on their day…! At Brett Badlove´s Que Pasa venue, every match had a 2-0 result, quite surprising considering the field. Qualifier Simone de Lacy faced fellow Jaguar and team captain Tracy Simpson in the opener and quickly found the desired trebles with some subsequent heavy scoring and no real response from her team mate. D8 concluded the match, de Lacy recording six scores of 80+, Simpson really out of sorts offering little resistance. Lisa Ivill found scoring no problem, but doubles a little elusive, her opponent Michelle Lane found both disciplines comfortably easy scoring 2x100+ plus D6 and D7 for the game. Gilly Kirby struggled to reach her form of late playing last year´s finalist Leah Chesworth who was quickly into her stride with some steady scoring in each of her two winning legs finally going out on D20 and D5. Another all Jaguars tie, Dee Green v. Angie Craggs produced some great scoring from the latter, but the two important doubles came from Green who progressed to face Chesworth for qualification.
Green couldn’t reproduce her earlier form, the Sporting Life girl improving hers to include a couple of tons plus two doubles to put her into the semis in consecutive seasons. De Lacy faced Green in the other qualification spot and straight away showed why she was top girl in 2014 with 125,100,100 and D2 for the first leg. Scoring like that is enough to humble most, Green finding the treble difficult to find. The big scores didn’t materialise in the second but the double did as de Lacy qualified along with Chesworth. At the Ale House current singles champion Yvonne Rouffignac started the defence of her title against an in form Wendy Hayward and quickly found herself one down, Hayward´s second arrow finding D12. The champion soon levelled with some consistent scoring plus her favourite D8, but missed doubles opportunities from both resulted in a battle for D1 which Hayward found first, defeat for the champion and a new name on the coveted trophy. Pat Schofield took two of the three against Kay Hobbis, the latter levelling on D6 to set up a decider. Schofield finished her 501 third leg to set up a juicy encounter with team mate Hayward next round. As expected it was a close encounter, going all three legs, Schofield taking the first on D2 Hayward the next on D20. Winning the bull in the decider gave Schofield an advantage which gave her first poke at the double, duly accomplished for a 2-1 win. Joining the Jaguar is former champion Sonya Cooper, representing the Misfits from Sporting Life, who made short work of Hilda Wilkinson

initely not on this occasion, for a 2-1 result. Pity Clark wasn’t in the other half of the draw, but from Abrams point of view its another good player out of the way. Abrams next opponent was to be fellow Meerkat Lee Maiden who had earlier taken out Ale House captain Berney Whipday, the former rugby league professional from Salford. Whipday ensured it was close taking the middle leg on D6 after Maiden had taken the first with a nice 65 out. A 140 from the Kat was enough to allow a miss or two before taking out the third on D2 for the match. Maiden should have taken the first leg against Abrams, winning the bull and wiring D8 for a 76 out in the first, but Abrams efforts of 2x100 and D8 plus 2x100 and a 60 out in the second enough to give the Meerkat a semi final spot. Joining him will be John Lane from Que Pasa Kestrels who overcame Simon Williams 2-0 and Karl Cooper in a tight three leg tussle, culminating in Lane finding D4 for a final place. At Gogarty´s Kelvin Angel and Alex Nikolov qualified, the former taking out Brian Hobbis and Brett Badlove. Nikolov overcoming Russell Lyness, Paul Dowington and Peter Ayres. Badlove was unlucky not to qualify, top scoring on the night with a 180 plus 135 and 121. Nikolov banging in numerous tons, 2x140 and a fine 110 out, Angel a more modest 140 and 100. Down at the Breakaways club, league vice chairman Del Kingsbury played some decent arrows taking out Misfit George Cain and the inform Joe Miller. Former Meerkat John Eyre joins him after victories over Chris Miles and the larger than life Sid Cross. Eyre was in blistering form beating Miles 2-0 with 2x100,140,3x80+ then taking out D18 and D4. A similar fate awaited Cross, Eyre hitting 140,132,125,100 and D4 twice. Kingsbury´s efforts were a little more subdued, but winning both matches 2-0 along with a tasty 90 out.
Qualifiers Sonya Cooper and Leah Chesworth in the first game winning 2-0 on D17 and D2. So, two Jaguars and two Misfits in the semi finals, all currently playing well but as we know it all gets a little nervy come finals night, who will hold their nerve better over the other three? The Mens final is even more difficult to determine. A solid performance from Pat Abrams saw the Meerkat through after a real scare playing Stuart Clark. Abrams won the bull and posted 121 and 100 setting up D10, achieved second dart. Clark´s response was emphatic, 100,121,121 and D4 to level. Abrams won the deciding bull and declared his intentions with 121 and 100, Clark replying with a ton. It was nip and tuck until the Kat left D8, which is rarely missed and def-
A nice 30+ tons to include a maximum at the Junction venue ended not unexpectedly with two outstanding qualifiers in Nick Spicer and Mark Filer. The in-form Mike Smith failed to qualify going out to Filer 2-1 after beating Cyril Harrison and Karl Mallinson both 2-1. Filer took two of the three against Smith in a real thriller that included a 180 from the Buster. Smith levelled on D10 and his haul of 2x100,120 and 3x80+ would have taken out most players, but not Filer on this occasion. The Buster had earlier beaten young Harvey Lane 2-0, but the youngster didn’t disgrace himself and has a bright future. Joe Hawkins continues his excellent form of late managing 2x100 and a 121 but eventually succumbing to Nick Spicer in a 2-0 defeat. Hawkins had earlier disposed of Kevin Wood with a nice 115 out (T20,S15,D20). Spicer´s last game of the night was against John Williams who gave a really good account of himself, but no match for Spicer who won the game 2-0 to include 2x140 and 3x100 ending the game on D8.

On 27th March 23 members and seven guests assembled at our home course, La Marquesa on a lovely sunny day to play our monthly stableford. Whilst we were playing the greens staff were actually cutting them, which led to a number of "overshoots" when putting. Some players coped with this better than others and some good scores were returned. There was some stiff competition for the award of best guest but Ian Eversfield eventually came through with a score of 35 points. Nearest the pin on the 5th was won by another guest, Kath Kirwin, the 11th was won by Harry Armstrong, the 15th by Malcolm Foskett (who also birdied this difficult hole) , and Tony Wilson was nearest on the 17th. The best front went to Dave Nicholls with a score of 18 and Joe Ogden won the best back with 17 points on countback. Third today with 32 points was Beverley Fairhurst, second was Gordon White with 33 points, but the winner today with a
creditable 36 points was Debbie Weedon. After the match we retired for presentations to the Olde 9th, where Grant also served up a welcome repast. Our next match is also at home on Friday 24th April and guests are welcome.
THE CELTS GOLF SOCIETY AT LA SERENA On a beautiful warm spring day we played our April open competition at La Serena. We had 50 players in all participating on the day. HAPPY DAYS GOLF SOCIETY By Lubbertus On Tuesday 31st March the Society held its match at the beautiful La Torre Golf course. The very large elaborately sculpted bunkers which help to separate the holes, together with three large lakes which come into play on six of the courses holes and the fact that the shorter length of La Torre Golf makes the course more playable for the average to higher-handicap players led to some very good golf being produced On what proved to be a very hot day for the 28 players, Fred Noakes won with 38, 2nd was Roger Liles on 37, with equal 3rd going to Pete Curley and Andy Shuttle on 35. The 2’s went to Steve Dixon at the 3rd hole with Roger Liles at the 15th. Roger completed a very impressive day by also finishing nearest the pin on holes 5 and 11. Not to be outdone, Steve Dixon also got nearest the pin at hole 3, with Simon Sharples nearest at hole 9 and Dai Hughes at hole 15. When the day was over, everyone was relieved to retreat to their spiritual home and “19th hole” at the Marinasol Restaurant in Cabo Roig where cooling shade and a very welcome buffet was provided, and of course a couple of cool refreshing drinks. The Happy Days Golf Society’s next competition is on 14th April at the Alhama Golf Course. If you would like to join Happy Days, or just want to know more, then ask Steve, or any of the staff at the Marinasol Restaurant in Cabo Roig and they would be happy to help. There is always a very warm welcome for all comers.

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF
(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘SMART GOLF’ This article is not about your golfing attire and wearing cashmere sweaters and fancy trousers. We are talking here about how to think your way around the golf course using simple common sense. Too easy? I make no apologies for this because failing to take a common sense approach to golf can have a worse impact than a faulty swing technique. Here are just a few ways in which you can improve this part of your mental approach: Play the first tee shot in your head - When you are driving (carefully) to the course or before you leave the practise area, visualise and play the first tee shot in your mind over and over again because when your face this shot for real you will feel more confident and should see better results. Stick to your game plan - Before you commence play you should have a plan or strategy for each hole and stick to it irrespective of how you are playing, your score, how the opposition are playing or the state of the match. Do not turn one bad shot into two (or more) - Golf is a game or mistakes, you will make them, accept them and do not try miracle shots to recover the situation, accept your punishment and get on with the game. Putting a good score together - When you find yourself in a position where you have a good score going do not get too defensive, trust your swing and stay aggressive. Use your shots - The handicapping system gives you shots because you need them so use them to the best of your ability and do not waste them by attacking pins tight to bunkers or hitting woods out of the rough to low index holes. Play the percentages - Do not attempt shots with a high risk of failure, simply get the ball back into play as safely as possible and get the best score that you can on the hole and get on with the rest of the game. Eliminate your disaster shots - Golf is not about how good your best shots are BUT is about how bad your bad shots are and so identify what these shots are and take lessons to eliminate them. Pay full attention - Each shot needs and deserves your full attention so do not play any shot unless you are ready to play the shot properly. Commit to the shot - Select the club that you feel is correct to play the shot, have no doubts about your selection, be positive and swing with confident controlled aggression. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. The deals shown in the table are some of the best currently available to you.

ALFIES GOLF SOCIETY AT MAR MENOR .....By Tony Hall Mar Menor was the venue this month for 30 Alfies Golf Society members and guests. It was a bright but windy day, clouding over later on, which made scoring difficult. As usual, the course was in good condition. On returning to Alfie’s Bar the golfers had a good chat about the day’s play, while our committee worked hard in the background auditing the scorecards and sorting out the winners. Winner on the day was Kevin McBride with 34 stableford points, and Tony Hall was runner up with 33 points. Nearest the pin in 2 on hole 12 was one of our guests, Mick Hemmings; nearest the pin on hole 17 was won by a new member, Grant Meekins. The longest drive winner was Gordon Cowan. As forecast the weather was just a tad cooler for our visit to the now, very popular La Serena golf course (the one with water on 16 holes). It doesn’t seem so long ago that the future of this course was doomed, poor condition, no one playing there etc. etc. I am pleased to say that the course was in great condition with the greens fooling many players; they looked slow but by heck they were not! Our format for this venue is usually a team event (it takes the pressure of the individual
card!) So for this visit we were competing in a 2 ball better ball Stableford format. It might be expected that the winning score for this format would be around the 45 points mark, actually until the last of our fourteen pairs came in, the best score was 37 points, so everyone in the clubhouse must have been thinking that they stood a chance of a prize, well their dreams were shattered when 3 of the last 4 pairs came in with a 38 and two 41’s. The 38 points was recorded by Vernon Brown playing by himself due to his partner being the only “no show” of the day. A ghost card was drawn from the pack, and low and behold it just happened to be Nick Spicer’s, who had complained about having a very bad day! Well he did manage to add one point to Vernon’s score, which earned him and Vernon 3rd place. The battle for 1st and 2nd places was between 2 of our Scandinavian pairings the winners being decided on lower handicap, Roger Nilsen and Tove Roed lost out to Gunnel Thunstrom and Ove Cederberg, both teams coming home with 41 points. The N.T.P.’s this week were for all players and all were taken, Hole3: Ove Cederberg, Hole 9: Sue Owens, Hole 15: Vernon Brown, Hole 17: Hermes Woerdemann, the lucky winners all took home a very nice bottle of spirits, kindly donated by Vernon Brown. Photo: the winning pair, Ove Cederberg and Gunnel Thunstrom The “2’s” pot is growing nicely; it now stands at €57 after a 2nd week of no one making a 2 on the par 3’s. Surly it will be taken at next week’s venue where we visit La Finca for our club Championship which of course will be MEDAL play, this competition is being sponsored by the club Professional of Campoamor, Joe Dean If you fancy a game next Wednesday at La Finca, just call the Match Secretary on 661524101 or visit our website and reserve your place online www.tmgs.org Our associated Club de golf El Paraiso are playing at El Plantio on the 19th April, for more information visit www.clubdegolfelparaiso.com

By Mike Chapman We started the week on Monday with a Best 2 from 4 with all scores counting on the Par 3's. The weather was ideal for golf however one hole, the par 3 fourteenth proved particularly troublesome for everyone with one team of four failing to score a single point. The winning multinational team with a score of 96 pts were Mike Chapman, Friedel Knebel, Benedicte Kruse and Marleen Billen. On Wednesday we played our usual weekly stableford competition which turned out to be one of the longest rounds of golf ever with at one stage three flights waiting on the tee to play. This played havoc with most players concentration levels but one player not affected by such things was steady eddie Tom Hardie whose routine forged over many years served him well to win Category 1 with a superb 38 pts. Doug Wright was relieved that he didn't call it a day at half way because of the slow play as he managed a birdie 2 at the 14th which was one of only 2 two's in the 2's Club. The top three in each Category were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Tom Hardie 38 pts 2nd Bryan Neal 37 pts 3rd Ken Robertson 35 pts. Cat 2. Geoff Biggerstaff 36 pts 2nd Rod Doel 32 pts 3rd Ulrike Barth 31 pts (c/b). 2's Club: Doug Wright and Ken Robertson On Friday several of our members were representing the Society in the final league game of the season with an outside chance of securing the Vega Baja Premier League Trophy for the second year running. The result will be included in next weeks report. The remainder played a 2 ball better ball at Las Ramblas where it was mainly the Lindsay Forbes show as his teams secured both first and second place. As the lower handicap player of 3 Lindsay was partnered by both Mike Chapman and Brian Townend and it was the latter who originally gave his pairing a two point lead following his birdie at the 5th. Mike pulled one back on the 10th scoring 4 pts to Lindsay's 3 but the game changed on the troublesome 14th with Mike scoring the only 2 pts to give his pairing a 1 pt lead which was maintained to the end of the round. Lindsay's superb scoring throughout kept his teams clear of the remainder of the field with Mike Chapman and Lindsay Forbes taking the honours with a total of 45 pts. Lindsay's partnership with Brian recorded 44 pts to take second with Barry Holtham and Nick Campbell third with 43 pts.

INJURIES SCUPPER DESERVED VICTORY CD TORREVIEJA ..........1 UD BENIGAMIN ............1 If I were to tell you that by 20 first half minutes, Torry had executed no less than 8 serious attempts on goal, I would not be lying. They started where they left off, only 4 days before, in similar rampant form, that saw them tear Cullera apart. How they didn't score at least 5 times before half time is beyond me! Two enforced changes were necessary, as Rafa and Juanra came in for the injured Borja and suspended Vicente. As early as the 2nd min, a superb move involving Cristian, Carrasco and Cesar, saw the latter put in a firm low cross to the far post, where Brani tested Beniganim's keeper Cristian at point blank range. From the next attack, Rafa put Cesar through on goal, but he too failed to beat Cristian. Juanra was next on the act, as his shot was cleared off the line, then Cesar had another shot dealt with by Cristian. A further salvo of shots from Adrian, Jorge and Cesar added to the excitement, but still the scoreboard read '0-0'. Surely Torry would score soon? Well, on 21 mins, when Cesar struck a swerving 25 yard drive, that damned keeper Cristian again had no right to tip it wide. From the corner, Alexis rose majestically, but his header lacked direction. Three mins later, Torry keeper Oscar was called into action for the first time, bravely saving from Olcini, then from the rebound, the same player hit the post. On 35 mins, a well worked move involving Carrasco and Rafa, culminated in a delightful cross to Ferran (on as a sub for less than 2 mins), whose shot hit the keeper before rolling over the line. The combination was repeated on 42 mins, although this time Ferran
shot the wrong side of the post. A minute later, Cesar's assist to Rafa put him through on goal, but alas he shot straight at the keeper. Unfortunately, the sub was then subbed, for Ferran, who had replaced the injured Cristian, lasted only 10 mins, before being replaced by Berna. I've lost count of the number of times this season that Torry have rued 1st half missed chances, and this game was no exception. Beniganim, not surprisingly employed dirty tactics, as 2 of their players were booked in quick succession, but Torry's search to double their goals tally continued. Rafa had the ball in the net after 49 mins, but was adjudged to have handled. All the previous hard work was then undone in a flash, when first an error by Brani, then a terrible defensive clearance by Ruben (who was to leave the field injured soon after), let in Olcina, whose assist gave Quiquin a simple tap in to equalise. Even after 3 mins of stoppage time, we still believed Torry would find the winning goal, but even though Carassco's cross to the far post produced a firm goal bound Cesar header, it was again saved brilliantly by a keeper on top form. With results going their way, this single point was enough to push Torry up to 9th position, some 5 points outside the last play off slot. For the second consecutive away match, Torry have a midday ko. On Sun 12 Apr, they make the long trip to Paterna, hoping that a decent nap on the team coach, will revitalize them enough to produce a much needed 3 points.
ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK CD TORREVIEJA ..........4 CF CULERA ..................1 What a difference a change of manager can make. For the 2nd consecutive home match under the guidance of Pedreno, new look Torry took the game by the scruff of the neck, reducing their opponents to chasing shadows, which they never caught! It's what the fans want, it's what the players want, and most importantly, it's what m a n a g e r Pedreno wants. The man's a breath of fresh air, of which you catch a strong whiff straight from kick off. Gone is the negativity evident during Galiana's regime, replaced by confidence that is oozing throughout the whole CD Torrevieja set up. Ok, so qualification for div 3 playoffs is still a big ask, but thanks to a change of tactics, and how, it has given Torry players, and fans alike, hope - realistic hope. The humiliation endured when Torry were soundly thrashed at Cullera, is now a distant memory, replaced by a promise that Torry fans can now expect exciting, attacking football, designed to entertain, and hopefully yield plenty of match winning points. Having said all that, Torry were slow leaving the blocks, and it was Cullera who created the best opportunities early on. The dangerous Manu shot agonisingly wide, but Torry hit back when Cristian, twice within a minute, suffered similar results. Brani kept up the pressure for Torry, his fierce low drive was well saved, but against the run of play, Cullera took the lead on 32 mins. An assist by Abel was clinically despatched from the edge of the box by Manu, leaving an eerie silence around Vicente Garcia Stadium. Fortunately, it didn't take long for parity to be restored, courtesy of an exquisite pass from Cesar, which the clean shaven Carrasco converted with aplomb. Three mins into the new half, Manu should have scored for the visitors, but surprisingly the skilful striker headed wide at the near post from a corner. Compliments were returned on 55 mins, when Carrasco crossed from the left wing, for top scorer Cesar to firmly head home at the far post. At this point, the game got a bit silly, as bookings for Vicente, Cristian, then Carrasco, were followed by a sending off for Cullera manager Gutierrez for something he said. Enter a Torry rampage. Surging runs from Brani, Cristian, Carrasco and Cesar, tested the resolve of Cullera's defence, especially keeper
Lucas. Man of the match Carrasco expertly squared the ball from the dead ball line, giving Cristian the perfect opportunity to score from close range on 82 mins. Substitute Juanra provided Brani the opportunity to unleash a thunderbolt from fully 25 yards, to complete the revenge mission on 88 mins.
