SPEEDING CAMPAIGN STARTS TODAY
STAFF REPORTER Monday sees the start of the latest week-long campaign to try to make the roads of Spain a little safer, with the DGT turning the attention to traffic police to one of the most dangerous elements of road safety, excessive speed. The campaign will run from Monday 13th, through to Sunday 19th of March with Guardia Civil traffic patrols focusing their attention to those who break the law on
conventional main roads, the location of the majority of fatal crashes where speed is a contributing factor. Recent data reveals that inappropriate speed was present in 22% of fatal accidents and that speed is one of the main factors that results in accidents with the worst consequences. One in four deaths in road based incidents can be attributed to being speed related with speeding causing nearly 500 deaths a year, and 70% of all injuries occurring on conventional roads. All Pegasus equipped helicopters are likely to be taking to the air, and mobile radar traps will be located in strategic locations around the country. During the week-long clamp that ran at around the same time last year, the traffic police checked nearly a million vehicles, half of which were on conventional roads, and reported a staggering 30,000 drivers for breaking the speed limit. In total, the Guardia Civil checked the speed of a total of 921,375 vehicles, of which 30,486, or 3.4%, were reported for not complying with speed limits. During the campaign, five drivers were reported for committing a crime against road safety when driving at a higher speed of eighty kilometres per hour above the permitted limit on this road. One driver was clocked at 237 kilometres per hour and under the influence of alcohol. These drivers could face prison for up to 6 months, or community service, as well as a hefty fine and a ban.
Monday, 13th April, 2015 Meanwhile, during the month of March of this year, there was at least a reduction in the number of serious offences recorded, with a total of 268 drivers across the Valencia region arrested and brought before the courts, representing a decrease of 18.4% compared to the same time last year. In the Alicante province, there were 55 charges for drunk driving and 41 for not having a license, as well as 2 for driving at excessive speed, one for driving at 223 kilometres per hour in a 100 limited zone, the other for driving at 216 kilometres per hour in a 120 kilometre per hour limited section. In the province of Valencia, 113 drivers were charged for driving under the influence of alcohol and 30 drivers did not have a valid license and in Castellón there were 18 drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol and 9 without a valid license. February saw 281 cases brought before the courts across the region, 189 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 92 for driving without a license.

COUR T THROWS OUT ROYAL PATERNITY CASE The paternity suit lodged against King Juan Carlos, the former head of state of Spain, has been dismissed by the Supreme Court investigating the case. Belgian citizen Ingrid Sartiau brought the case to court in September, 2014, after the abdication of the King, as he was immune from having the hearing presented whilst holding the head of state. The case against King Juan Carlos, who still holds the title of King even after his abdication, “completely lacks plausibility or seriousness”, according to the court, and is considered, “false, frivolous and tortuous”. The Supreme Court dismissed the suit by a majority of seven votes against three, therefore now confirming that the case is closed.

MARQ OUTLINES PLANS FOR TEN EXCAVATION SITES
Not everyone appreciates or is even aware of the work that the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ) carry out on local archeological sites with most people thinking that the operation is centred purely on the Alicante museum. However just last week the institution announced details of its annual plan of excavations for 2015 saying that between May and September it will operate ten archaeological sites in the province involving about 120 volunteers from student groups to graduates in History and Archaeology. And not all will be Spanish with many being drawn into the region from universities in the USA, UK and South America. A spokesman for the museum said that the objective is to pursue the investigation of prehistory, Iberian culture, Roman and medieval-modern history at a number of strategic points in the province. The team of archaeologists from Alicante museum sites will operate at Cabezo Pardo and Cabezo de los Ojales in San Isidro, Granja de Rocamora and Albatera; the slopes of the castle in Callosa de Segura; la Cova del Randero in Pedreguer; Cova de l'Or in BeniarrĂŠs; el Penyal d'Ifach in Calpe; la BahĂa de l'Albufereta and el Tossal de Manises in Alicante; l'Illeta dels Banyets in El Campello; Barranco del Juncaret in Mutxamel and la parcela (plot) 604 of the Industrial estate 16 in Monforte del Cid. The Deputy Councillor for Culture, Juan Bautista Rosello, said that the program of archaeological excavations "is considered by professionals as one of the most comprehensive and rigorous in the Region, both for the number of historical periods covered, and for the vast area that it covers". To carry out these tasks the operation will be provided with logistical support from the municipalities of Callosa de Segura, Calpe, Pedreguer and Monforte del Cid as a result of by several bilateral agreements with the local councils and the Provincial government of Alicante. The deputy, aalso went on to thank the work of the many volunteers who will be drafted in to help with these tasks, while also getting hands-on training that will provide them with greater exphat will better equip them in their future
professional activities. Work at the Cabezo Pardo and Cabezo de los Ojales sites in San Isidro will be concentrated above ground while that on the slopes of the Callosa Castle will be concentrated in the lower zones where it is hoped to complete exhumations from the Bronze Age The prehistoric cave la Cova del Randero in Pedreguer will see work continue in the central gallery and the entrance while in the Cova de l'Or (Neolithic) volunteers will attempt to complete the mapping of the entire fissure. The Penyal d'Ifach, one of the most strategic points in the province and this will be the eleventh season of excavations in the Natural Park In the Bay of Alicante the work will consist of underwater exploration and mapping of an Underwater Archaeological Chart, while in the Tossal de Manises the objective will be to locate the West Gate of the old city, located on the side of the reservoir that descends to the sea. Finally, the Barranco del Juncaret will see the archaeological documentation of the few preserved remains of a Roman cistern, while the Industrial area 16 Monforte will see excavations carried out on an adjoining plot discovered an ancient cemetery dating back to Iberian times. Alicante Provincial Council have said that they will allocate a total of 119,500 euros to supplement the archaeological work in order to provide better documentation of the findings. The work will get underway in May, with the collaboration of the CV MARQ Foundation. Also involved will be the Architecture Council of Alicante which will help to coordinate the work and the health and safety aspects of the activities being carried out on the ten different sites.

RAJOY TO STAND Spain's conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said on Monday he will seek re-election in this year's national polls, despite facing criticism after his party was trounced in a key regional vote last month."I'd like to be a candidate again and try and become prime minister again," Rajoy told public radio RNE. This is the first time Rajoy has clearly stated he would be running in November's general election.
ROAD DEATHS UP A total of 248 people died in Spanish road accidents during the first quarter of the year, according to Spain’s DGT national highway agency, the highest number of traffic victims in the period since 2002. The death toll is also up 28 victims from the same quarter last year. DGT Director María Seguí attributed the high number of fatalities to “improvements in the economy” and falls in fuel prices, which he says encourage more people onto the road.

TORREVIEJA CHIEF JUDGE COMPLAINS OF COURTS COLLAPSE The new Chief Judge of Torrevieja, Mariano José Gómez Lozano, has demanded action to put an end to the state of “collapse” that the courts in the town are experiencing, urging the urgent launch of new courts to deal with the backlog of cases. Gómez Lozano has made the urgent request having been appointed to the post of Chief Judge in March, noting that a Royal Decree from June 2010 orders the implementation of two new courts, and yet no action has yet been taken to do so. The Judge also states that there are “no plans” in place for the establishing of the courts, despite him seeing “no reason” why they cannot be implemented. Torrevieja courts are suffering an “immense overload” according to the Judge, which “far exceeds” the workload established by the General Council of the Judiciary. The court of the First Instance is currently operating at 245% above the standard set by the council, whereas the criminal court is operating at 167% above the standard module.

'YES WE CAN' (SÍ SE PUEDE) PRESENTS ITS CANDIDATES IN TORREVIEJA ELECTIONS
CHARITY SWIM DISRUPTED Gibraltar will take action against the captain of a Spanish fishing boat who refused to move his vessel to allow a charity swim to go ahead safely. As hardy swimmers prepared to take to the sea in Catalan Bay, Royal Gibraltar police officers were alerted to several vessels raking the seabed for shellfish. When police ordered the Spanish fishing crews to move on for safety reasons, one captain initially refused and a Spanish guardia civil patrol boat arrived at the scene – leading to a one-hour standoff. The rest of the fishermen, all from the Spanish town of La Línea, moved on but the captain of the boat which did not at first respond to the police order to move, has been reported to a magistrates court.
DRAIN CLEANING IN TORREVIEJA Torrevieja based water supply company Agamed has announced the first disinfection scheme of the year has begun in the city. All municipal water wells and sewage systems will be treated during the course of the campaign which is expected to last for around 2 months.
LACK OF MAINTENANCE PUTTING RESIDENTS AT RISK Fire fighters from Torrevieja were called to assist in knocking down a lamppost in the Torretas area of the town, in order to prevent the installation crashing down onto nearby homes. Residents on calle Cerezo had been concerned about the lack of maintenance to lamp posts and were increasingly worried about the state of this particular light which had become at risk as it was showing extreme signs of rust and corrosion around the base. Other lampposts in the area are in a similar condition, but an inspection had been said to show no imminent danger. It is by far the first time that the public lighting network has been criticised outside the city centre after residents the urbanisations nearby had complained about lack of lighting at night, again due to a lack of maintenance and attention by the contractors employed by the town hall, and a subsequent lack of action by the authorities who are seldom seen in the area, much as can be said about many town hall public services, according to the residents.
La Plaza de la Constitución was the venue chosen by the political party 'Yes you can Torrevieja' to launch its campaign for the upcoming Municipal elections last weekend. The meeting began with a spokesman presenting the manifesto in front of a healthy gathering. Much of it was explained in detail following which reasons were then provided for the need of this new Party. "We have decided to take responsibility and govern for ourselves." A number of candidates attended the event, many of whom introduced themselves to members of the public before taking questions of their own.
Each of the candidates asked for the support of citizens as they went about the collection of signatures that are necessary for them to become a credited party which is able to campaign in the elections. A total of 1,500 signatures are needed, many of which were collected at the launch with tables set out in la Plaza de la Constitución for the purpose. The group announced that they will be carrying out similar events across the whole city in the coming days. The Party called for the elimination of wasteful spending and the boosting of social investments by the Town Council although they didn’t explain quite how this might be achieved..

WORK FINALLY TO START ON LA ZENIA ROUNDABOUT Orihuela´s councillor for urbanism, Antonio Zapata, has approved the final stage for work to be carried out on changing the formation at La Zenia roundabout, creating a network of one-way streets on the current road system, so as to hopefully ease congestion caused by traffic visiting the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre. There will be a pavement area created on part of the roundabout, some car parking places will be prepared and access and egress will be restricted to one way on two of the minor roads which connect to the roundabout. The plans had been submitted and approved by the Alicante roads department before December, but
money for the work had not been released. With this final approval now in place, the work should commence shortly, and is hoped to be completed before the summer, now that the urbanism department has agreed to foot the bill. At the same time, finances have also now been approved to repair the steps to the beach at Aquamarina. This work should also have been completed last year but the same financial restrictions prevented the work from being started until now. That work should start immediately. Finally, work will also start this week on creating the giant chess board on one of the main park areas of the Orihuela Costa.
GRAND CHARITY GALA FOR AFA TORREVIEJA The Municipal Theatre will be the venue for a Grand Charity Gala on 19 April, the beneficiaries of which will be AFA Torrevieja. STARBUCKS FINALLY ARRIVE IN ALICANTE
The American coffee chain Starbucks are finally to have a presence in Alicante, as they open their first public outlet in the city, albeit inside the El Corte Ingles Federico Soto store in late May. The bar will move into the area currently accommodation the travel agency, and will occupy a space of approximately 200 square meters and as well as many popular varieties of coffee, will also accommodate a children's playroom. Currently the only Starbucks outlet in the region is situated inside new terminal at Alicante-Elche airport but if you wish to taste their coffee you will need to be in possession
of a boarding pass. The other closest outlets are all in Valencia, in Manises airport and a number scattered around the city’s shopping centres. The opening of Starbucks in El Corte Inglés de Alicante is the result of an overall agreement between the two companies, and subject to it’s popularity, it could well see space being set aside for the brand in a number of other El Corte Ingles stores nationwide. So, despite many feeling that it is long overdue, one of the most famous cafes in the world is finally arriving in the city of Alicante. Having consolidated its position in Madrid and Barcelona the Starbucks expansion strategy has shifted to the peripheral markets, one of the strongest of which is said to be El Corte Ingles. New President Dimas Gimeno says that his stores remain committed to expanding their leisure and catering operations and the addition of Starbuck’s outlets is an extremely important part of their diversification.

RECORD EASTER FOR HOTELIERS Hoteliers and restaurateurs in the province said they felt "very positive" after the first major holiday period of the year, in which hotel occupancy had actually touched 100% in Benidorm. Hosbec president, Toni Mayor, said that in many other areas the occupation rate was up to 98% and it had been a ‘spectacular week’ for restaurants, cafes and many other hospitality-related businesses, ‘the best Easter in the last 10 years bringing over 40 million euros into the local economy.’ Of the total expenditure, 55-60 percent was in the coastal province of Alicante, which, according to the Minister of Economy, Industry, Tourism and Employment, Maximo Buch, reached an average occupancy of 85 percent, who has expressed "satisfaction" with the results achieved in the number of travelers and overnight stays, an increase of almost a five percent over the same period last year. The Minister said that Easter "is often a barometer of the upcoming summer season, for which we now have high expectations in terms of travelers, overnight stays and tourist spending."
He also praised "the positive impact the occupancy rate has had on employment generation, which will help consolidate the good results already achieved in the province during the first two months of the year, with over 58,500 employed in the tourism industry, 7% more than the same period last year. " Buch made the remarks during his visit to the Escuela de Hostelería de Elche, launched by the local council last March. He praised the school saying that the initiative "is an example of how such training can help create job opportunities, placing them within the leading tourism activities that create employment."

BENEFITS OF BEING ‘ON THE GA ME’
Following a landmark ruling by Barcelona Judge Juan Augustín Maragall, sex workers in Spain are now entitled to a contract by their employer who should also pay their social security contributions. The ruling means that they are now entitled to the same rights as other workers, which also means that they can claim benefits if they are unemployed. Judge Juan Augustín Maragall, sitting in Barcelona, ruled that prostitutes should be given a contract by their employers, who should also pay their social security contributions. The court decision was made after a massage parlour offering sex services was raided by labour inspectors. Three prostitutes were found to be working there without the appropriate employment and as such the judge ruled that the management
had violated the women’s rights. The Company, called Xcenter, will also have to pay backdated national insurance contributions for the prostitutes from 2012. The court has therefore ruled that prostitutes should be given the security of benefits, healthcare, pensions and unemployment payments to help safeguard them from being exploited. Many claim that Spain’s economic crisis has forced more women to sell sex with the industry booming as more women are turning to it – often in desperation. Around 39% of men in Spain admit to having used the services of a prostitute. The decision by the court in Barcelona is not yet final, as it can be appealed to the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia however pimping and trafficking remain illegal.

FINANCIAL TROUBLE FOR RUSSIANS German news sources reported this week that more than a hundred Russians living in Spain have had their bank accounts frozen, on account of them not being able to explain the source of their income. The action was carried out under laws that oblige foreigners to disclose financial information, which came into force in 2010, whereas foreigners have to declare assets and real estate outside Spain if it is worth more than 50,000 euro. The Spanish authorities can freeze the accounts of those who fail to submit documents within a specified period of around three months, as well as issuing a fine of up to 10,000 euro. It is believed that many Russians were too scared to request the required documents from their native country which would testify to the legitimacy of their income for fear of reprisals.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Sunshine, Cactus and Roses I had an interesting email from Joyce, a newly arrived expat, this week. Although I am often asked about issues relating to living and working in Spain and the Canary Islands, this question was unusual in that it asked me about gardening. Joyce and her partner have just moved to the Canary Islands and were wondering what she could grow in the small, but much appreciated, garden at the front of her new home. Joyce was a keen gardener in the UK, yet was now concerned, because she didn't just want to grow cactus, which she thought were the only plants that would grow in the desert-like conditions of the south of Gran Canaria. I am no gardening expert, other than I know what I like and what I don't like. As with most things, I am a firm believer that most problems can be resolved with the aid of a good book, and in this case a good gardening book, a soil test kit, a lot of patience and a bit of common sense should do the trick. The more I thought about the question, the more I realised that I have learned quite a lot about gardening and plants whilst living on this lovely island. Admittedly, I have made many mistakes, with the most common being trying to grow plants that I liked when I lived in the UK. Of course, the plants did not share the same point of view and would have none of it, and quickly shrivelled and died. A combination of soil type, lively winds, dusty dry heat and lack of water were the reasons for many of my failures, and so I began to look for plants that I could see growing in other gardens,
which would also be suitable for our own. Gardening is not as popular a pastime in Spain and the Canary Islands as it is in the UK; I often hear that gardening and the love of plants is a Brit thing. I have also noticed that when Spanish and Canarians move into a new home with a space for a garden, their first reaction is to tile over any remaining ground. Admittedly, it is easier to keep clean, and ornate pots filled with plants can make all the difference. However, as a Brit, I like to see plants growing in the soil, albeit with the aid of a watering system beneath the surface of the soil, with the water supply controlled by a programmable timer to ensure that the plants don't dry out during the very hot, dry days. Our watering system switches on for two minutes, twice a day, during the winter months and for five minutes, twice a day, during the hot, summer months. The periods of hot winds are the worst time for plants, and this is why the choice of plants is so important for any garden. I avoid prickly cactus, not that I don't like them; I do, and many have beautiful, impressive flowers. However, our dog, Bella, tends to run into them when she is over exited or chasing a ball, and a dog with prickly cactus needles in her bottom is not a good idea. Instead, I aim for lush succulents, and cactus without prickles. They are usually good value to buy and provide an interesting variety of shape and colour. Interestingly, roses also survive beautifully in our garden and they flower throughout the year. Unlike in the UK, I never have to spray them for black spot or any other disease that affects roses in many parts of the UK. I cut them back heavily in January each year and give them a granular feed, and they reward us with a beautiful display of blooms throughout the year. Finding good quality roses to buy is not always easy on the island, but the garden centre that I use imports good stock from time to time, and I try to buy the scented varieties. I have also found that lavender is a wonderful asset for a Canarian garden. They grow and flower vigorously, require little attention other than cutting back from time to time, and their heady perfume is
enough to send flies, mosquitoes and other nasty insects heading in another direction. My message to Joyce is to enjoy her Canarian garden, but to work with the soil, the plants and local growing conditions. There are plenty of plants that can be grown very successfully, but I would focus upon succulents, roses and lavender. Also, don't forget to plant Aloe Vera, which is often regarded as a weed and ignored. It is commonly known as the 'First Aid Plant', and for good reason. If you should scratch yourself whilst pruning the roses, breaking a piece off this wonderful plant and rubbing it over the wound, provides a soothing remedy that has been known and used by Canarians for generations. CLARA CAMPOAMOR DEMONSTRATES AGAINST MALE VIOLENCE La Asociación de Mujeres Clara Campoamor were out last weekend demonstrating against male violence. After a number of female deaths at the hands of their male partners and husbands over the holiday weekend the group wanted to show their complete support to the authorities and to the families of the victims as they attempt to come to terms with the appalling brutality that has occurred in recent days. They said that Easter should not be about mourning at the funerals of loved ones noting that at least six women had been abused, five of them killed, during the run up to the holiday weekend. The Ladies of the Association said that they would wear black armbands as a mark of respect to those who had suffered directly and to their families. A spokesperson for the group asked "where preventive measures and aid is coming from, because at the present time both seem to be absent." She bemoaned the fact that this "continues to pass before our eyes and those of society and the public authorities who, including many religious leaders, continue to look the other way." The Association demanded action "to stop this macho terrorism, and to make the eradication of violence a priority for all social, political, legal and economic groups.”

LACK OF RESOURCES STRETCHES LOCAL FIREFIGHTERS TO LIMIT
A lack of available resources is testing rescue services to the limit, with lives potentially at risk due to a number of concurrent incidents leading to the unavailability of fire fighters. On Wednesday of this week three incidents occurred at the same time that forced Elche fire fighters to prioritise their attention. One incident call was to open a home in El Altet where a child had become locked in alone in the third floor apartment. Almost immediately as they responded to this call they were called to attend a vehicle crash on the A-70 motorway when one of the vehicles had caught fire. A call was made to attend a Seat car that had caught fire in Crevillente whilst a fire in a cafe in Santa Pola was also reported with a large amount of smoke coming from the kitchen. All of these incidents meant that there was no further cover available in the area as the crews battled to bring these fires under control and attend the other emergency calls. The provincial fire consortium made arrangements to transfer
resources to Elche, but by the time this had been organised there was no need. The situation is not unique to this area. In Lugo this week a car crashed into a tanker and suffered considerable damage, trapping the car occupants inside. However, the delay in fire fighters being able to attend this crash was a life and death situation that forced the Guardia Civil staff attending the scene to extract the occupants themselves, who were then transferred to hospital, one by helicopter, for emergency treatment. Although the tanker was carrying foodstuff rather than flammable liquid, the situation could still have been a lot worse had it not been for the swift actions of those at the scene. Emergency services have suffered a tremendous amount of cuts in recent years, with both fire and rescue and emergency medical provisions seeing huge cuts from the budgets, many of which some people believe are only just starting to show when the number of emergencies outweigh the number of teams on had to deal with situations which can mean a matter of life or death.

GUARDIA CIVIL OFFICER PRAISED FOR ROA D CLOSURE An off duty Guardia Civil officer managed to avert a major disaster this week, when he successfully blocked a main road minutes before a landslide sent rubble tumbling below. The incident occurred on Monday in the Valencia town of Cortes de Pallรกs, when the officer was driving along the road and noticed a number of small rocks and a quantity of dust. Having driven the route for the last five years the officer was aware of small landslides reported recently and so he quickly stopped his private vehicle and manoeuvred it into position in order to block the road. He then identified himself to the following vehicles as a Guardia Civil officer and explained the reasons for his actions. One of those vehicles was carrying a local councillor who called the municipal service staff to assist at the scene. Within minutes, the land did indeed begin to fall cutting the road off completely and damaging a number of vehicles nearby, as well as electrical equipment. One local resident had to be flown out be air ambulance due to an unrelated medical condition but ambulances were unable to access the area due to the blockage, but the swift actions of the officer no doubt saving lives of people who could well have ended up under the rubble.

KIDS CAUGHT THROWING STONES AT CARS IN MURCIA Officers from the Guardia Civil in Murcia have identified two children who were arrested on suspicion of crimes against road safety creating a serious hazard to motorists, after an investigation identified them as being the two individuals who were throwing stones at cars on the Autovía del Reguerón, near Alcantarilla. The investigation began on the 5th of April when officers were carrying out surveillance as part of the special Eater operation. Officers were alerted by the 112 emergency coordination centre of a group of people throwing stones at cars on the MU-30 in the area of a tunnel. The officers immediately attended the scene and observed numerous stones, a plastic box, a backpack and a fire fighting hose from the tunnel, which were removed from the road by the officers to ensure road safety. A local search revealed that the offenders had entered the tunnel by a hole cut in the external metal fence which surrounded the site, then accessed through an emergency door, and then proceeded to
throw the objects at cars inside the tunnel. As a result of these acts of vandalism, two cars travelling on the highway suffered significant damage, although the occupants were luckily not injured during the incidents. The investigation then led the officers to identify two children as suspects, who now face criminal liability for their actions, along with their parents or custodial guardians, and face criminal prosecution under Article 385 of the Penal Code, punishable by imprisonment of between six months and two years, or a fine and community service. In March of this year, in the first case of its kind in Spain, the courts in Murcia condemned the parents of children who threw stones from a bridge onto a road which killed the 59 year old passenger of a car in 2012, forcing the parents to pay 163,000 euro in compensation to the victim´s family.
KING ADMITS DRIVING FINE Although he didn´t give any details away, King Felipe VI of Spain has been applauded for confirming that nobody is above the law, admitting to having been fined by the Guardia Civil for a traffic offence. It came during a tour of the DGT headquarters in which the King saw the final phase of the Easter operation. Prior to the tour a question was put to him asking if he had ever been fined by the Guardia Civil, to which he simply replied “yes”, before qualifying that the incident happened “many years ago”. The King also sent wishes to the many drivers who were on the roads during the weekend, before thanking the Guardia Civil patrols for their efforts, expressing his “appreciation and affection”, and that of all Spanish men and women of the Guardia Civil Guard and the air assets who are in service on all the country's roads and in the air, especially on a day like today”, continuing to thank those who “put their lives at risk many times, for which many millions of Spaniards feel well served and safer. According to provisional data prior to the close of the count at midnight, the ten-day operation has resulted in 13.9 million journeys, an increase of 7.8% from last year. Sadly, some 25 people lost their lives in the same period, although that count also ended at midnight, but it is hoped that the figure will be less than last year when 37 people were killed over Easter.

REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN SPANISH LICENSE PLATES & REGISTRATION DOCUMENT
Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you maybe exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process which you can do online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. STEP 5: OBTAINING THE SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. The country's Gypsy Secretariat litres per square metre. Foundation and others delivered protest letters to members of Spain's Royal Language Academy, which produces the definitive Spanish dictionary. Foundation spokeswoman Pilar Calon says the campaign attempts to raise awareness of discrimination against gypsies, also known as Roma.
DAWN ARRESTS
Moreover, in Castellón, the province has been the wettest since records began, some 100 years ago, according to data provided by the Spanish Met Office, AEMET. In March of the year 1915, Morella and Vilafranca suffered rainfall of 140.2 litres per square metre. In 1989, this was 162.9 litres per square metre. By contrast, in the data collected up until 25th of this month, they recorded around 320 litres per square metre. In fact, in eleven municipalities in the province of Castellón, rainfall has exceeded 300 litres per square metre. In the province of Valencia, Barx accumulated 271 litres per square metre, Buñol experienced 266.5 square metres and Sagunto saw 199.7 litres per square metre. The good news for those living on the southern side of the region is that the Alicante province has not been quite so wet. Alcoy suffered the most rainfall, but only accumulating 82.6 litres per square metre, followed by Villena with 52 litres per square metre, and Orihuela with 47, Benidorm with 28.8 and Pinoso with 19.6 litres per square metre.
Spain arrested nine people in the northeastern region of Catalonia early on Wednesday as part of an operation against Islamist militants. "The arrested are accused, amongst other crimes, of belonging to a terrorist organisation," a spokeswoman for the Catalan police said. The arrests took place following dawn raids at 17 different properties in the region.
SPAIN BLOCKS MUSIC SITE Spain’s National High Court has blocked Goear.com, a website containing over four million audio files, after a judge accepted an appeal lodged by copyright collecting society AGEDI. The court initially rejected a decision by the country’s culture ministry to declare the streaming site illegal but it eventually accepted AGEDI’s arguments on appeal and ordered operators to block access to the site within 72 hours.

NOW IT’S A CAPITAL PLACE Madrid was not always Spain’s Capital city. In medieval Spain this honour fell to Toledo. It was in June 1561 that Philip II moved the court from Toledo to the fast growing city of Madrid. At that time the city had a population of some 30,000 inhabitants. Philip II had the good fortune to reign over Spain just as the wealth from the recently conquered South American continent was filling the royal coffers. Philip was charged with the task of building a suitable burial place for his father, the notorious Charles V of Austria (1st of Spain), who whilst still in his late fifties had surrendered the crown to his son with this condition attached. A site was chosen at El Escorial (meaning the slag heap), which was from that date on to become the burial place of almost every Spanish king ,queen, royal consort ,and their children both legitimate and illegitimate. The monastery of San Lorenzo built by King Philip at that site still serves as the Royal Burial place .This huge monastery with its 2,000 windows sits in the shadow of the impressive Guadarrama mountain

range. The small town of El Escoral which has sprung up around the monastery, sits amongst green fields. A sense of history fills it cobbled streets. Tasteful architecture continually reminds us of the presence of hundreds of royal personages from earlier, and often more troubled times than our own. Each of these departed royals having left us with a memory of the part they played in the progress towards a modern European nation. A visit to the monastery fills you with wonder at the incredible skills of medieval builders and stone masons. Coming back to Madrid. We find a pleasing combination of old and new in this thriving city which sits right in the heart of Spain. Here you have the Royal Palace which has been home to these many generations of royals. Treasure troves of some of the finest art exhibitions in the world can be found in the Reina Sofia Museum, the Thyssen museum, and undoubtedly one of the most famous museums in the world –The Prado. The naval museum helps us to relive the story of the Spanish Armada, the national Archaeological museum exhibits evidence of mans development in
Spain. Famous statues such as the Cibeles fountain and the gates of Alcala adorn wide sweeping avenues. Parks filled with flowers and trees are to be found throughout the city. The cream of these being the Buen Retiro which is built round a boating lake. Top name shops and top theatre shows are always on offer in Madrid .Eating out is a pleasure with so many good restaurants to choose from. Sitting in the social hub of Madrid’s huge Plaza Mayor with the sounds, sights and smells of a large lively and buzzing Madrid is a memory to cherish forever. Both these fabulous destinations are included in a tremendous value for money excursion. Using a 3* City centre hotel and including an excursion to Escorial for only 188€ for 4 days B&B, May 11-14. FACEBOOK FOR DOCTORS
When a thyroid cancer patient walked into Dr Richard Armstrong's surgery in a very rural part of Michigan in 2008, the general surgeon was able to operate and remove the affected gland. But the cancer spread to the lungs, and that's where things got complicated. "At the beginning it was straightforward‌.but as the cancer progressed, it became more complicated from the point of view of how to progress through the treatment," said Dr Armstrong. The doctor, who has been practising medicine for 34 years, needed specialist health help and advice. But being based in "the middle of the woods", Armstrong's closest endocrine specialist was over 300 miles away. That's when he logged onto Sermo, a sort of "Facebook for doctors". The service, which launched in 2005 in the U.S., allows members
to sign up and chat to each other to find solutions. The company announced the U.K. launch on Wednesday allowing doctors from the U.K. to chat to their U.S. counterparts. "There's a lot of medical knowledge that when shared across borders will benefit the global healthcare system," explained Sermo's CEO Peter Kirk. For Armstrong who joined the service in 2007, Sermo has been "lifechanging" for many of his patients who may not have otherwise had access to specialist expert knowledge. In the case of the thyroid cancer patient, the doctor posted details of the problem. Within the first 24 hours, Armstrong received 40 replies from colleagues across the U.S. Eventually the patient landed in a research program at the University of Michigan and is now a sevenyear survivor of the cancer. Over the last year, 3,500 challenging patient cases were posted by doctors on Sermo. These cases were viewed 700,000 times and received 50,000 comments, the social network claims. Sermo is not the only platform for doctors to share insights. Figure1 allows physicians to post pictures of diseases with fellow doctors posting responses for cures or identification of the condition. Another called SharePractice allows doctors to crowd source answers to medical problems, much like Sermo. Doximity is a professional network, sort of like a LinkedIn for doctors. And as well as the medical-specific social networking sites, doctors are also on LinkedIn and Facebook. The U.K. launch marks Sermo's international expansion. Kirk said that other European markets such as Germany, France, Italy and Spain are next.

The tennis courts at the Campoamor golf club were the venue for a busy weekend of tennis. On the afternoon of Good Friday, the usual mixture of regulars and tennis visitors participated in an American style tournament. After 6 preliminary rounds and some very enjoyable tennis for the 18 participants, the top 2 scoring men and women competed in a one set final. RESULTSMEN:
1st Andy McClaughlin 2nd John Kearns 3rd Terry Allen
21pts 20pts 16pts
WOMEN:
1st Sharron Ward 2nd Jan Mc Claughlin 3rd Helen Coggle
23pts 17pts 15pts
On the toss of a coin, Jan and Andy were drawn together against Sharron and John. The final resulted in a win for Jan and Andy by 6-2, despite some fervent support from the Irish spectators for the runners-up. The winners were also paired together in the last tournament they played at Campoamor, also winning on that occasion. Many thanks to Judith Allen-Classen, for providing refreshments, with all proceeds going towards the Dolores dogs home. On Easter Saturday, the monthly 'world doubles' event took place. This event is organised for 12 of the better players available and involves 5 matches of 8 games with different partners and opponents. It is designed so players get 3 hours of continuous, good quality tennis, the results give players ranking points, hence the name.

Finally my personal thanks to everyone who was able to come & give Ron such a wonderful “send off” & also for all the hugs, emails & cards that I have received, it really has helped to know you're all there. The Fairways began the week at Quesada playing the Blenheims, it was a very close fought game that could have finished in our favour if too many shots had not been dropped on the last end! Winning teams were Beryl Regan, Martin Foulcer & Richard Lee 2212, Lynne Bishop, Dane Howard & Jenny Bowman 22-15. Dave Chaplin, Neil Burrows & Mike Regan finished with a draw 17-17. We had some mixed results from our matches and made some new friends. A big thank you to Mike & Beryl Regan for arranging a great package. Good luck to our club Champions in the Champion of Champions comp next week and finally to all our members that are taking off to spend their summer over the sea, have a safe journey and we look forward to seeing you all back in September, that includes you Russ Hudson, there, you have got your mention!

CERESA CRIBBAGE 6th April and week 28 with only 2 weeks remaining and Dorothy’s Magpies are still leading the way having their 3 pairs with 2 wins each against Paul’s Catorce whose 3 pairs only managed 1 win each. Moving up 2 places into 2nd spot are Richard’s Ospreys who preyed on Peter’s Galleon with a sound win even with Ann & Alan only scoring 1 win while Peter & Odette dimmed to zero success for Catorce. Brian’s Jaguars dropped 1 place in losing closely to Alan’s Robins who had 2 pairs with 2 wins and moved off the bottom place while only Vanessa & Margaret G won 2 for the Jaguars. Also down 1 slot are Ron’s Nacho’s Voles who slipped up against Ayliff’s Da Vinci’s with Lynda & Pat in form with 3 wins leaving Terry & Elsa without a win for the Voles. Another surprise were big winners Keith’s Merlins soaring to 7-2 against Les’s Jays whose pair of Les & Dave were non scorers while for the Merlins even Tony & Keith managed 1 win. Geoff’s Lo Crispin Taverners just missed out in a tight finish against Mike’s Peacocks despite Mike & Sue only scoring 1 win which is better than the nothing scored by John & Brian for the Taverners. A win for a change for Jim’s Sharks who took a bite out of Brian’s Meson Galea in a close finish thanks to Hilary & Ann-Marie with their 3 wins leaving Brian & Geoff for Galea bleeding with a zero. I’ve kept the best till last as my Falcons submitted at the Steakhouse and plummeted to bottom spot after 10 consecutive losses having Bill & Sue on zero (with their house move on their minds) while for Steve’s Steakhouse 2 pairs scored 2 wins each.

LA SIESTA BOWLS CLUB S.A.B.A. Hurricane League 10th April. Due to the funeral of a much loved and popular Member of La Siesta B.C. Sue Worth, who sadly passed away on 6th April, the Wasps fixture against Quesada was reversed to allow members of La Siesta to attend Sue’s funeral service at Rocamar Crematoria San Pedro. The game went ahead at La Siesta in the afternoon after the service and, although a little muted, it was a good result for the Wasps having a great start to our opening game to the season by winning five rinks and the shots to give us a 12-2 victory. Our Winners were Joy Gardiner, Irene Mangan, Jean Cooper 13-12, Beryl Styring, Norman Murphy, Alex Morrice 23-13, Ann and Robert Heath, George Richardson 21-13,

LA MARINA BOWLS CLUB By Bobbie Sims Here we go again...... It's the first week of the new S.A.B.A. summer leagues and we got off to a fantastic start with a great win. LA MARINA PILOTS We were up against the Quesada Lancasters, and came away with 4 wins and 2 draws, which gave us 12 points to 2 and shots of 108-85. Results were, Barbara Forshaw, John Rae and Tom Spencer 17-17. Paul Tregoing, Robert Finlayson and captain Margaret Finlayson 1111, Martin Butler Jim Freeman and John Morgan 20-15, Alan Wilcock, Berni Carr and Brian Duff 20-16, Brian Murray Phil Pape, Ted Winters 18-16. but top of the lot today were Mo Taylor, Mike Brain and Dave Taylor 22-10. LA MARINA PILOTS Our game today was against Greenlands Glosters and it looks like our winning streak is keeping going, the result was an amazing 14 points to nil and shots were 141-87 It was a high scoring game all round, well done everyone, but a special mention must go to Mo Taylor, Mike Surch and Dave Taylor who were behind on the last end, Dave was asked to pick up the jack which he did....and claimed 7 to win the game. Keep flying you Pilots.
EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Easter Sunday provided us with a great start to our week, with the annual Fun Day, which proved to be a good all round get together and raiser of club funds. On what appears to be the start of the warm weather (we hope) we travelled to Emerald Isle Vulcans and though the result may seem poor, losing by 12 points to 2. The result however does not reflect the game, Rob Clark, Dave Haynes and skip Merv Armstrong only lost by 2 shots. Barbara Jones, John Featherstone and Geoff Jones lost by 4 shots as did Sheila Cooper, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris. Margaret & Ron Odell skipped by club newcomer Don Darby were on for a draw, until the last shot of the game gave the opposition a win. On the other two rinks Bob Easthope, John Skipper and Shirley Edwards lost by 25 shots to 8 but this was partially offset by our winning rink of Peter Blackburn with Jane and Stew Hamill, who won by 22 shots to 12. It would appear that the novices are starting to get a grip with away greens and that can only be good for the club. The most important result and the one that went for us was the friendly, Marion Haynes, Ron Edwards and Brian Taylor romped home by 18 shots to 11. A great day and a great time had by one and all. Although the next week is a rest week, due to the Champion of Champions competition, it is a great chance to watch some of the finest bowler in the area and with matches against touring teams on Wednesday and Friday, we all have the chance of great fun. 180´s: Peter Ayres x 2 (Porter House), Pat Abrams x2, Alex Nikolov x2, Lee Maiden x 2, Paul Durrant x2 (Meerkats), Mike Smith x 2, Del Lister (Breakaways), Shaun Smith x 2, Nick Spicer x2 (Hyenas), Mark Filer (Busters), Brett Badlove (Que Pasa Eagles), Matt Cummins (Pint Depot Kings), Derek Halpin (Evolution), Simone de Lacy (Junction Jaguars) Highest finish: 158 Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars), Nick Spicer (Hub Hyenas) Meerkats defeat of Que Pasa´s Eagles this week, ruined the possibility of a Thursday evening showdown with the Hyenas for the coveted League title. The Eagles needed to beat or draw with the Kats to force a last league match encounter with the Hyenas for the championship. It wasn’t to be as a depleted Eagles capitulated to a reasonable Kats´ performance who now retain the league title and currently remain unbeaten with just one game to play. The Kats have beaten Hyenas twice this season but have to lock horns twice more before the season ends, this week in the league where Simon Williams´ side will be doing their upmost to end the Kats unbeaten record. The following week it will be the K.O. Cup Final at the Porter House venue. This game will be very close, the triples format determining a tight result. Both sides have outstanding players but lets face it one or two will wobble a little under pressure and missed doubles will undoubtedly mean defeat. It may well go all the way i.e. 13 legs but I predict a 7-5 result either way. Each side will be expecting their top men to perform, Pat Abrams for the Kats and Nick Spicer for the Hyenas, which no doubt they will having already proved their value throughout the season. Eagles´ Jim Storey and Stuart Clark did their best to prevent a whitewash this week. 7 tons from the duo plus a lone 140 from Brett Badlove was insufficient to prevent a rout. An indifferent start was
punctuated by a ton from Pat Abrams and finishing by Lee Maiden on D15. Three tons from Alex Nikolov and Derek Kingsbury in the next gave Dave Frew the opportunity of a D4 out, Clark scoring a ton. It was soon 0-3, Paul Durrant 121 and Abrams 180,117 and D10 closing the third triple, just 128 from Storey. And so it continued, 0-6 at half time Abrams 100, Durrant and Maiden 100 providing the doubles. Abrams opened the singles against Clark taking out the Eagle 0-2 on D7 and D8 with 4 tons, Clark just 2 tons but certainly not disgraced. Graham Todd and Nikolov added two more legs, both returning 2-0 matches. Durrant faced captain Den Hall in the next and recorded a maximum and a nice 63 out on D18 leaving just two matches for the hosts to record a victory. Storey did his best to get his side on the score sheet recording 4 tons and taking the middle leg of three against Frew, who closed out on D8. Maiden made it 12 for the Kats taking out D16 for the match and a nice 76 out in the first (S16,S20,D20). Hub Hyenas could do no better than win their penultimate match in the hope the next match would be for the title. It didn’t go their way but the consolation of second place after a fine home victory to Busters. Hyenas won all three triples via Joe Miller D10, Nick Spicer 2x100,D10 and John Eyre 100,D10. Julie Hallett and Peter O´Rourke showing some opposition but lacking the chance of a double. Ray Harvey 100 pulled back one for the visitors on D19, well supported by Irene Russell, despite tons from Joe Hawkins and Eyre. Shaun Smith and Geoff Harvey just edged out O´Rourke and Paul Dowington, Smith scoring 100,139 and D10 for 4-1. Spicer 100 paired with Cyril Harrison in the concluding doubles, the latter making it 5-1 against Shirley Roberts and Julie Hallett. Irene Russell 81,100 did her best to upset Miller who was in decent form with a tasty 70 out and D13 for 2-0. O´Rourke was unlucky against Harrison taking the middle leg of three, the Hyena edging out the Buster with a series of high scores. Simon Williams gave a great captain´s performance playing Dowington, taking the first after an 85 and 140 and then opening in the second with 85,100. The Busters response was similar scoring but a definitive 87 out on the bull (S17,S20,bull). No tons in the decider but shared scores of six 80+, Dowington polishing off 71 via S13,S18,D20. Hawkins took the next in good form, plenty of scores plus D20 and D16. In the 11th leg Harvey outscored Spicer to take the first on D4 and hit 140 in the second to take the lead. Spicer somehow levelled on D4 to take it to three. Both traded 80 pluses and tons before Spicer finished the 501 on D20. Smith and Roberts shared four tons in the remaining leg, Roberts unable to close, Smith taking full advantage with D20 and D5 for a 10-2 result. Porters victory over Gogarty´s ensured Ray Sanderson´s side third place in the title race and well deserved. The visitors went 3 up via Peter Ayres D12, Debbie Metcalfe D2 and Yvonne Rouffignac D18. Scores coming from Sanderson 100, Brian Nash 130 and Matt Jackson 100. Elaine Willis D3 pulled one back for Gogarty´s partner Kevin Prockter hitting 117, this despite 2x100 from Ray Hayes. The next went the Porters way, Nash and Rouffignac sharing tons, the latter hitting D4. Ayres wrapped up the first half with 95 and D9 along with the skipper. A 116 from Hayes proved fruitless against Richard Pattison in the opening singles as a 125 and 100 set up D18 for the opening leg. Two more tons from the Gogarty´s man left 56 points which was accomplished in two S16,D20. Debbie Metcalfe gave a good account of herself levelling on D5 with a 135 thrown in, opponent Prockter countering with a 121, but more importantly both winning doubles D16 and D20. Nash D16, D17 and Rouffignac 100,D2 and D1 took the next two against Gail Todd and Cynthia Jevons respectively. Captain Steve Woods couldn’t show his form of late, succumbing to Ayres 100, 2-0 on D20 and D2. Jackson

Hub Hyenas stalwarts Geoff Harvey, Cyril Harrison, Joe Miller
won 2 of 3 against Willis on D16 twice plus 2x100 and a 140. Willis took the middle leg on D17. Tavern Drivers must have thought they were back to winning ways after leading Breakaways 4-2 at half time. Mike Smith was outstanding for Breakaways with 2x140,100 and D8, Del Lister close behind with 100,D10 and plenty of high scores. It was however Rick Cox, Paul Birtwhistle and Rob Hindley who ensured the half time lead for the hosts. John Dursley´s D9 for the Tavern in the third doubles before the break was to be their last as Breakaways showed why they are Division 2 champions winning all six singles. Smith was the highlight of the singles hitting 140 and taking out a nice 70 against Stu Mitchell. Sarah Simpson ensured the draw against Birtwhistle, Lister making it both points for the visitors with a ton and D20. Ivan Jones and Mike Snow both acquitted themselves well, coincidentally winning their matches on D6. Junction Jaguars keep their hopes of second spot alive with a comfortable victory over the Queens. Marie Dunne did her upmost to bring the Queens into the game with some hefty scoring in the games prior to the break, but to no avail as the Jaguars raced to a 0-6 half time lead. Sharon Bugg, Simone de Lacy and Lisa Ivill the main Jaguars, taking 5 of the 6 doubles, Dee Green taking the 6th. De Lacy added a ton to an earlier 140 in her victory over Lorraine Cox. Marie Dunne continued her form in overcoming Bugg on D7, earning the Royal family their first leg of the evening. Pat Schofield, Ivill and Hilda Wilkinson took the next three, leaving the 12th leg to go to Royal Rachael Broadhead on D4 playing Jaguars captain Tracey Simpson. Ale House carry on winning, this week at the expense of the Kestrels who must be favourites for second spot in Division 2 with one match to go. Some decent darts from Chris Miles 123,100 Michelle Lane 100 and John Lane proved insufficient as Ale House continue their unbeaten run. The hosts were 4-2 up at half time, Karl Mallinson taking two of the doubles, Brian Hobbis and Berney Whipday the other two. Mallinson made it 6 legs for the Alers on D20 to leave captain Whipday to hit D5 for the match and two points. Russell Lyness and John Lane were the Kestrels singles winners. A draw at half time looked good news for the Pint Depot Kings seeking their first victory. In fact Matt Cummins made it 4 for the Kings in the opening singles against Steph Simpson, both recording 140, Cummins taking the game 2-0. Dave Wright almost made it 5 after levelling on D10 against Mick Jones who went on to take the third on D20, both players finding the treble. The Jackals took the next two via Nigel Elvery D5, D10 and Phil de Lacy 140 ensuring a point. Keith King got the better of Gary Minor 2-0 for the match, Eddie Fozzard gaining the Kings 5th leg against Andy Gildea. Some good scoring from both sides, the best coming from Minor 2x100,123, Fozzard 125,140 Wright 2x100, Jones 2x140,115. LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY RETAIN THE KAMEELEON TROPHY
Victorious Las Ramblas team with VBPGL Secretary Ivie Davies and Treasurer Ron Nicholson VEGA BAJA PREMIER GOLF LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION 3rd APRIL 2015 at El Plantio Golf Resort The Vega Baja Premier Golf League final fixture of the season was at El Plantio Golf Resort in Alicante and on Good Friday, so how good was it going to be? All eyes were really on two teams La Manga North and Las Ramblas Golf Society, as the results of their respective matches would determine the 2015 Champions. La Manga North were playing their local rivals La Manga Residents Association and a lot was going to depend on the result of this match as La Manga North held a four point advantage over second place Las Ramblas G.S. Las Ramblas who are the holders of the Kameeleon Premier Trophy and were determined to go out and win handsomely enough to retain the trophy. The other results although important for the individual Golf Societies, the main ones were for the title and second place, it was non-playing Captain of La Manga North who was running around in a buggy chivvying up his team, but the team also from La Manga RGA denied Robin and his team by holding them to a draw and taking the three bonus points with a better total points. Mick Brentnall Las Ramblas G.S. Captain took no hostages and his team made sure that the four point deficit would not be the deterrent in retaining the trophy by amassing the days highest point total of the day and with it the bonus points. Paddy’s Point was not going to make it easy, but in this mood Las Ramblas were not going to be beaten. EuroToffs although at the bottom of the table they wanted to finish the season in a flourish and this is what they did by beating a normally strong La Serena team although it was enough to lift them off the bottom. Rockets who know what its like to be at the base of the table finished the season in a very creditable third place by drawing with journey men Don Cayo G.S. but missed out on the bonus points but kept the third spot by one point. La Manga North could only muster 6 league points from the match but with Las Ramblas earning 12 meant they overcame the four point difference and took the trophy by 2 points. What a cracking finale.

TORREGOLF.EU AT ALENDA FRIDAY 3RD.APRIL Once again perfect conditions for playing golf on Friday and Alenda provided us with a course in perfect condition for a full turn out of members and it is obvious many changes have gone on and still going on, e.g. new bunkers going in on the 9th. this will make the Par 5, HCP 14 more difficult. Even though the greens were very slow and caught many out I have to say it didn’t cause too much of a problem because 50% of those playing managed that magic 30+ score for our Stableford Competition with the winners in 3 Categories to-day being, Category 1. 1st. Phil Brigham 37 points 2nd. Max Edwards 36. Category 2. 1st. Dorian Brooksby 36 on c/b from Vince Lannon and Category 3. 1st. Al Warnock 36 points 2nd. Henry Dryden with 35. Nearest the Pin prizes to-day Hole 3. Len Cole. Hole 13 Phil Brigham and Hole 16 Paul Hurrell. The Full Monte, in support of our football team C.D. Montesinos going to Len Cole. MORE SUCCESS FOR LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY By Mike Chapman Las Ramblas Golf Society once again became champions of the Vega Baja Premier Golf League with a victory over Paddy's Point Golf Society in the final game of the season last Friday winning the league by 2 pts. Going into the game we were trailing La Manga North by 4 pts but they could only draw their match against La Manga RGA who also took the bonus points. This meant that our victory by three games to one together with the bonus points was enough to retain the title. A photograph of the team who represented us in the final game is shown above receiving the trophy from League Secretary Ivie Davies. Many congratulations to Captain Mick Brentnall and all the players who contributed to this magnificent achievement. On Monday we played a team counter game where the number of scores to count on a particular hole is not known until reaching the next tee. This makes for a very interesting if sometimes frustrating game. The winning team with a very good score of 93 pts which equates to 5 under par were Geoff Biggerstaff, Peter Dunn, Brian Townend and Mike Chapman. In second place some 9 pts adrift was the team of Lindsay Forbes, Brian Dent, Bryan Neal and 'Albert'. On Wednesday in strong winds we played our usual weekly stableford competition. Unusually it was the Category 2 players who made the most of the difficult conditions with the top three all outscoring the Category One players. It was one of our newest members Marleen Billen who has been threatening to come in with a big score for some time who topped the scoring charts with an excellent 38 pts. The top three in each Category were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Olga Douglas 33 pts (c/b) 2nd Bryan Neal 33pts 3rd Jan Svendsen 31 pts Cat 2. 1st Marleen Billen 38 pts 2nd Barry Holtham 37 pts 3rd Mike Chapman 35pts (on c/b from Rod Doel) 2's Club: Rod Doel and Olga Douglas A report of Friday's game which I am told will include some Easter eggs as prizes will be included in next weeks report.
EUROGOLF MONTHLY MEDAL
On Thu 9th April 47 members assembled at our own course La Marquesa to play the monthly medal game. In deference to our aging membership we also allow the more senior players to play a normal stableford game at the back end of the main competition. So today we had 38 playing in the medal and 9 playing in the fun stableford. The day was breezy to say the least although rain threatened we missed most of it. Nearest the pins today was: hole 5 Sue Gillett, hole 11 Bill Martin, Hole 15 Bob Buckeridge and Hole 17 Ian Pegg. We also have a NTP on the 17th for the fun players but nobody hit the green so we had a card draw for this prize which went to Mike Gillett. Phyllis Venables won the best front 9 with a score of net 36 and Malcolm Foskett did the same on the back nine. Bruce Gordon won the fun competition with 36 points and Tom Corbett came second with 34. The best gross score today was Bill Martin with net 36 who also came third in the Gold Division. Second in this division with net 75 was Bob Buckeridge but Sue Gillett triumphed with the same score and also won the Founders Cup. Third in the Silver division was Gordon Bourne with net 76 and second was Gloria Manning with net 75. The winner of the medal competition was Joe Ogden also with a net 75.

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF
(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘STAYING IN THE PRESENT’ All the golfing psychology books in the world will tell you to play one shot at a time and to forget about the future of the past. Trust me this is easier said than done and staying in the present is one of the hardest things to do in golf BUT it is something that all golfers must attempt to master. Just why is it so difficult? The answer is that during a long game of golf you have a lot of time on your hands to think and if you consider that your mind can change and switch from present to past and then future in an instant then what is it going to do in 5 hours? I bet you that you have regular playing partners who claim to be able to stay in the present at all times and then they say something like “ As I stood on the 5th tee was thinking that this is a birdie hole”. You can see from this statement that the player is already thinking 3 or 4 shots in front and is therefore already in the future. I remind you again that to remain truly in the present a golfer should only be thinking about the next shot to be faced and where and how they are going to hit the ball to the target selected. The player should then hit the shot, find it, ACCEPT the result and then start thinking only about the next shot and then repeat this process of thinking until the ball is in the hole or until he runs out of holes. When you are on the golf course you should never evaluate how you are playing because this automatically means that you are thinking about the past and you must not judge or critique for the same reason. You must at no time keep a mental running score and start thinking about breaking 70,80,90 etc. because this means that you are thinking about both the past and future in an instant. If you start to think about the past and the future there is a danger that you become protective, negative and tight with resulting bad golf. Avoid at all costs getting over excited or disappointed at your golf as a result of the these past or future thoughts and concentrate on your pre-shot routine and playing each shot to the best of your ability. Just why is it so important to stay in the present? The answer is that golf requires a narrow focus on where you want the ball to go and ANYTHING that detracts from this focus damages your ability to perform. As an example in the 1961 US Masters Arnold Palmer walked up the 18th fairway leading the event and a close friend prematurely congratulated him on his win but he hit the ball into a green-side bunker, ultimately took a 6 and lost to Gary Player. The moment his friend congratulated him on his ‘win’ he lost focus on the task at hand and looked forward to the result with disastrous results. The best way to get around the golf course successfully is to simply play each shot at hand until you run out of holes and then add it up. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY AT LA SERENA Last Wednesday the Society traveled south again to play the course with plenty of water, La Serena. The course was in decent condition with the greens found to be in very good condition. Again rain threatened but never materialised but the wind certainly blew and on most holes into your face. There were some red cheeks on the golf course. 20 players took part in a individual stableford competition. One amusing incident worthy of mention. Roy “Lewis Hamilton” Kavanagh did a sharp turn in his buggy and looked round to comment on it to his playing partner in the buggy Mike Brown but there was no Mike Brown there. He had fallen out of the buggy and was rolling down a bank. Fortunately he was shaken but not stirred and fine and dandy after the fall. Players had been reminded to put a few extra balls in their golf bags and needless to say they were needed as quite a few balls were lost to the water. After the game conversation centred on how many balls had individuals lost rather than their scores. The winner on the day was the very experienced “iron” Brian Smith who mastered the course and conditions well and came in with 30 points. In
second place was “Likely Lad” Brian Airey who scored 27 points closely followed in third place by returning member John Featherstone. In 4th place was “Lord” Ian Fogerty. Only 3 out of the 6 “Nearest the Pins” were won and the winners of these were Sue Smith, Paul Flanaghan and Brian Airey. Brian Airey had a good day but almost an even better day when his ball rolled round the cup but wouldn´t drop in for a birdie on a par 3 and the 2´s pot which wasn´t won and is carried forward to the next game. After the game the members returned to the society base, the Quesada Country Club for a drink or two and a tasty buffet provided by mine hosts Dave and Anita. There is a fun Quiz-Night at the Quesada Country Club on Thursday 16 April. The next game is on Wednesday 22 April at Altorreal. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the Membership Secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.
LIMEBAR GOLF SOCIETY LOS ALTOS, ORIHUELA COSTA The golf societies venue for the 8th April 2015 was held at Serena Golf Course. Twenty-five members teed off on a dull and very windy day. The course was in fairly good condition, however with a number of hazards including water and the gusty conditions the scores were fairly low. But this not deter an enjoyable days golf. The competition was in the stapleford format and the scores recorded are as follows. Nearest the pin on the 3rd hole (par 3) was Terry Cullen. Nearest the pin in 2 on the 6th hole (par 4) was Norman Dobson. Nearest the pin in on the 9th hole (par 3) was Dave Everson. Nearest the pin on the 15th hole (par 3) was Kevin Jackson. Nearest the pin on the 17th hole (par 3) was Les Thwaites. Bronze Class in 2nd place was Ken Sutton with 23 points. Bronze Class in 1st place was Dave Railton with 24 points Silver Class 2nd place was Les Thwaites with a score of 25 points.
Silver Class 1st place was Kevin Jackson with a score of 26 points. Gold Class 2nd place was Mike Heighway with a score of 27 points Gold Class 1st place was Terry Cullen with a score of 28 points. Best guest with 22 points was Ian Turley. A very good day of golf in pleasant company, with thanks to the committee for organising the event and the bar staff for providing the meal.
CAFE UNO GOLF SOCIETY This week Thursday 9th April, 17 members and guests of the Cafe Uno golf society played at Alenda. Although the course is undergoing a face lift, it is not interfering with play, and is currently in very good condition. The upgrade will certainly make it a more challenging course in the future. The format of play this week was individual Stableford and the results follow. 1st J.Pedersen - 38pts. 2nd S.Lawrence - 31pts. c/b. 3rd T.Rogers - 31pts. c/b.
Best front 9 - D.Bishop 20pts. Best back 9 - D.Harwood 15pts. c/b. Nearest the pin - S.Lawrence. Nearest the pin in 2 - S.Hamilton. 2's winner - S.Lawrence. Well done to the winners and thanks to Cafe Uno for the after game hospitality. Next week Thursday 16th April we are playing at Altorreal. 1st tee is 11:00. Please arrive 1 hour before. Thanks, Steve Lawrence.

Daya Nueva 2 v. C.D. Oriel "B" 1 Alicante Cadetes 2A Daya started brightly and on five minutes a great run down the right by Marcos saw his fierce shot well saved by the visitors' keeper. Oriel were playing some good football themselves making for an exciting end to end game although the visitors' keeper was by far the busier. As the half wore on the home side began to control the game more and created a couple of good chances but when would a goal come for Daya ? Oriel started to get back into the game and they forced Daya into defending deeply. On twenty eight minutes Oriel took the lead with a good headed goal from a well taken corner. Daya were now up against it as the visitors went searching for a second goal. It was now a question of survival for Daya as they were under constant pressure. On thirty six minutes the home side should have scored when a great run and shot by Angel was parried by the keeper only for Carrido following up to miss an easy chance. Then it was Angel crashing his shot against the underside of the bar, again the follow up by Daya was blasted over by Jose Gregorio ! So 1 - 0 at the break with the home side may be, just may be on the way back into the game. The visitors came out and bossed the second half straight from the whistle. It was difficult to see how Daya were going to get back into the game and a second goal for the visitors would surely end any chance of Daya salvaging anything from the game. Jesus did go close with a powerful header from a Francisco free kick on sixty minutes so all might not be lost for the home side yet ! Now it was Daya looking the more likely to score and they did just that when Angel (the best player on the pitch) buried a great shot from distance after some neat footwork. So 1 - 1 at seventy minutes, could we now dream of a winner ? How the Oriel goal stayed intact in the final ten minutes was beyond belief as Daya threw the kitchen sink at them. With the minutes ticking away Jose's great cross was parried by the keeper but Carlos was on hand to make it 2 - 1 Daya final score. What a great battling win for Daya who were without goal keeper Danni and Diego who has been scoring freely lately. Miguel, Daya's stand in keeper performed well and did not let his side down. Man of the match was Angel, just different class. The lady referee had a good game and was always up with play and stood no nonsense. Daya Dave - Team Sponsor: Segurlab

MURCIANO GUILLERMO LOPEZ WINS MAR MENOR THREE DAY REGATTA Guillermo López, of the Mar Menor Sailing Club took the first trophy of the year following the three Day Mar Menor Optimist Sailing Regatta which took place last Friday, Saturday and Sunday in local waters. He was joined on the podium by the Catalán Arnau Gelpí and Yeray Maqueda, also from Murcia, (CN Los Nietos). The final day, during which only two races were held, was unfortunately spoiled by strong winds which regularly gusted up to 29 knots in intensity. Other results saw Elena Marin-Armero (CN Mar Menor) take her first
victory in Murcian waters from Tania Samper (RCN Torrevieja) and Cristina de Béjar (RCR Alicante) in the Female category while Antonio López (CN Mar Menor) led home the Under 13 races from Alejandro Cerezo and Jorge Javier Garcia, both of RCR Cartagena. A spokesman said that the weather was as expected with the organising committee deciding to limit the final day to just two races because of strong winds but with seven races held overall the results provided worthy winners who were tested in a variety of different conditions.
