HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS JOIN ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE STAFF REPORTER Some 200,000 pilgrims joined in the annual walk to the Santa Faz monastery this week, joining what Regional President of Valencia, Alberto Fabra, described last year as a sign of “unity and strength” as there is nothing that can stop “the will of an entire people”.

In fact, although there were fewer attendees than last year, when some 300,000 pilgrims took the 7.5 kilometre trek, it was anticipated that last year would have been particularly busy on account of the event celebrating its 525th anniversary, it was inevitable in this election year that politicians would see the opportunity to gain support from attendees. The weather at the start of the day was cool, with clouds lining the sky, resulting in less fainting and heat related medical problems than in previous years, as from 7 in the morning the streets surrounding the Cathedral of St. Nicholas filled the streets with people collecting their bamboo rods with a sprig of rosemary protruding from the top, enjoying a blessing, before setting off on the pilgrimage. The politicians began to gather in the town hall square, with key members from all the major political groups being in attendance. The regional secretary of the PSOE, Ximo Puig, and Enric Morera from Compromís and Fernando Llopis from the UPyD, amongst others, all ready to

only serious protests came in the form of a group of workers in Telefónica shirts, an anti-abortion association with an information booth. Bishop Jesús Murgui emphasised that the event was both “unique” and “super special” for Alicante, on account of it “uniting us all” in the 15th century monastery where the holy Santa Faz relic is kept, a linen sheet on which Christ’s face is depicted, with a single tear falling from the right eye. The relic that was brought over from The Vatican in the 15th century by a Franciscan priest, padre Villafranca , and according to popular tradition, is the fabric with which Veronica dried the bleeding face of Jesus on the Way of the Cross. During both the walk and the subsequent cele-

walk in the presence of the PP head, Alberto Fabra, ensuring a balance of political representation. The walk itself seemed quicker this year, with even the mayor, Miguel Valor, passing a joking comment that Bishop Jesús Murgui had switched to “turbo”. In just one hour and 45 minutes the official delegation covered the route between the Cathedral of St. Nicholas and the Monastery of Santa Faz. Almost becoming as traditional as the pilgrimage itself, there are often numerous protests along the route, although this year seemed to offer less than usual in terms of manifestations, with even a noticeable absence, perhaps due to the electioneering, of the traditional banner complaining about cuts in public transport outside the headquarters of Vectalia. One group who did protest was a collective of traders opposed to the construction of an Ikea superstore in Rabasa, Alicante, who decided to take their protest to Santa Faz, albeit in a light-hearted manner. The

brations afterwards, the political infestation continued, with perhaps the most curious element being the PP mayoral candidate Asunción Sánchez Zaplana coordinating pictures with Santa Faz for posting on social networks. As the faithful reached the end of their pilgrimage and headed the monastery square, a mass was held by the Bishop of Orihuela-Alicante and the retired bishop, Rafael Palmero, before the time to rest, as the pilgrims then enjoyed craft stalls and food, visited one of the sideshows, went shopping and enjoyed their day, until a rain storm hit in the afternoon’s proceedings, bringing the whole day to an abrupt and dramatic close for another year.

LEADER TWO OF THE UK’S MOST WANTED FUGITIVES CAPTURED IN 24 HRS ADVERTISING HOTLINE

Two suspected drug traffickers who featured in the Operation Captura fugitive campaign have been arrested in the space of 24 hours. Paul Monk, aged 54, from Romford, Essex was captured on Tuesday morning at his luxury four bedroom villa in Javea, following an operation involving the Guardia Civil and the National Crime Agency. When armed officers swooped Monk was directing workmen that were laying a marble patio around his swimming pool. An imitation firearm with silencer and 125,000 Euros were recovMonk was arrested in Javea ered. On Wednesday morning Jayson McDonald, aged 37, from Acton, was apprehended at an apartment in Amsterdam. McDonald had been hiding in Spain but it is believed he based himself in the Netherlands after officers raided a property in the Coín area of Malaga. Both men are wanted by the Metropolitan Police on suspicion of drugs offences and are currently in custody awaiting extradition proceedings. Dave Allen, Head of the UK International Crime Bureau at the NCA, said: “Our ability to capture two of our most wanted fugitives in different countries within 24 hours demonstrates the NCA’s international reach Monk was allegedly involved in the handover of one kilo of cocaine in Cockfosters, London, in May 2013, and is also linked to the seizure of 24 kilos of cannabis in Colchester in October 2013. McDonald is believed to be a member of a Europe-wide organised crime network responsible for the importation of class A drugs into the UK. The arrests are less than a month after the men were publicised through Operation Captura – the multi-agency initiative between Crimestoppers, the NCA and the Spanish authorites. A total of 68 out of 86 fugitives on the list have now been caught. Shane Walford, aged 38, from Coventry, who went on the run while on licence for manslaughter, was publicised at the same time as Monk and McDonald. He was arrested in Fuerteventura as he attempted to board a flight to Ireland. Lord Ashcroft KCMG PC, the Founder and Chair of Crimestoppers, said: “It is a fantastic result to have three arrests within the first month of the latest appeal. It really is a testament to the hard work carried out by the NCA, Spanish authorities and Crimestoppers to ensure these fugitives are brought to justice. “This should be a warning to the remaining 18 individuals on the Captura list that they cannot hide forever. If the public continue to contact Crimestoppers and give information anonymously, I am confident we will see more arrests in the future.” Information given to Crimestoppers can help locate the fugitives on the Captura list. For those people calling from Spain there is a special freephone Spanish 900 555 111 telephone number which will be answered in the UK by Crimestoppers’ call agents. A translation service is available upon request. People can also pass on information anonymously via the Crimestoppers number 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org

ORIHUELA-ALICANTE BISHOPRIC FAILS TO REMOVE FRANCO SYMBOLS Legislation states that Franco’s body should be removed from ‘The Valley of the Fallen’ and the monument redesignated to recognise all victims of the Civil War and dictatorship

Fifteen Bishoprics, including OrihuelaAlicante, have been reported to the courts for failing to remove symbols of the Franco dictatorship and Spanish Civil war. The Law of Historical Memory, which came into being in 2007, requires all symbols of the period to be removed, something that the Bishoprics have failed to carry out. The Law also requires the graves of Francisco Franco, José Antonio Primo de Rivera and General Queipo de Llano, be moved from their prominent basilica locations and the remains reburied elsewhere. Only the bodies of popes, cardinals or bishops are allowed to be interred on such sites. The denuncia was served by human rights lawyer, Eduardo Ranz, last Tuesday April 14 on the anniversary of the proclamation of the Second Republic. He states that the 15 Bishoprics all offend against the independence of the State Article 589 of the Penal Code. The include the bishoprics and archbishops of Madrid, Córdoba, Segovia, Cuenca, Merida-Badajoz, Coria-Cáceres, Badajoz, Almeria, Cartagena, Valencia , Orihuela-Alicante, Sevilla, Sigüenza-Guadalajara, Zaragoza and Oviedo.

In Madrid, the lawyer lodged his denuncia against the Archdiocese, located in Bailen, in which he requested the removal of the symbols of Franco and the removal of the remains of Franco and Primo de Rivera from the Basilica of the Valley of the Fallen. Ranz also denounced the Archbishop of Seville requiring him to remove the grave of Lieutenant General Gonzalo Queipo de Llano from the Sierra Basilica of La Macarena, citing as precedent a case in Alicante, where the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Socorro removed a plate containing the words 'José Antonio', which was commemorating the founder of the Falange. He says that if he fails to get a response in reasonable time from the courts or from the Bishoprics he will personally travel to Rome and seek an audience with the Pontiff himself. On 11 February, the anniversary of the proclamation of the First Republic, Ranz initially charged 38 mayors for alleged criminal contempt of Article 410 of the Penal Code. This offense carries with it a fine of three to twelve months and a penalty of disqualification from public employment or office for a period of six months to two years.

ROYAL GIFT PONY-TAILED Pablo Iglesias shunned protocol to give King Felipe the complete ‘Game of Thrones’ series when they met for the first time on Wednesday. The king reacted graciously at the MEP meet-up in Brussels, grinning and admitting he had not yet seen the series. Podemos leader Iglesias reportedly gifted the violent series to him so he might ‘better understand the political crisis in Spain’. It was the king’s first visit as monarch to the European Parliament to greet the 54 Spanish MEPs, five of whom are Podemos politicians.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS WITH GEHORADADA GeHoradada is quickly establishing itself locally as the perfect outdoor activity for the whole family, with the most recent event, held in Pilar last week, attracting over 200 enthusiasts to the town from 4 different countries.

COCA-COLA LAYOFFS VOID Spain’s Supreme Court said Wednesday it had upheld a lower court decision to void the layoffs of 1,190 workers at Coca-Cola Co.’s Spanish bottler, saying it infringed on workers’ right to strike as the bottler didn’t present workers with a detailed plan of its decision to close down some of its factories in 2014. The ruling follows a dispute ongoing for more than a year and means workers at four out of 11 bottling plants that were scheduled to close can return to their jobs with back salaries.

Best likened to Orienteering, the activity is a form of ‘Treasure Hunt’ in which, last weekend, the organisers hid over a hundred objects across the entire area. The participants then used a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device to find these objects, called "geocaches" or "caches". A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook (with a pen or pencil). The geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name. After signing the log, the cache must be placed back exactly where the person found it. Geocaching shares many aspects with benchmarking, trigpointing, orienteering, treasure-hunting, letterboxing, and waymarking. The thrill of seeking and finding treasure has long been part of the history and at the weekend in Pilar de la Horadada your could see the enthusiasm and excitement as whole families took part in this stimulating new hobby. With enthusiasts coming from Alicante, Valencia, Murcia, Albacete, Almería, Granada, Malaga, Madrid and Avila, Germany, Belgium and Sweden the GeHoradada 2015 attracted 96 teams who took part alongside 15 people from the departments of Tourism and Youth. During the second edition of geocaching pilareño there was also a assortment of other activities, games, tastings, interviews, dances and novelties which kept the whole family occupied throughout the entire challenge. The Municipality of Pilar de la Horadada has been organising this activity in the area for over two years and it is now beginning to gain attention on the national stage and draw geocachers from Alicante, Murcia and beyond. Councillor for Tourism, Eva Martinez said that the feedback from participants has been very positive, both for the organization and the program of activities, which will now encourage us to organize a "Mega" venture for the next edition IF you want to know more about geHoradada, take a look at the Facebook group: www.facebook.com/events/1615887631988765/

NEW DIFFUSERS REGENERATE MAR MENOR ENVIRONMENT Despite the growing desalination industry there are still many questions to be answered with regard to the environmental impacts mainly generated by the discharge into the sea of the concentrated brine, data regarding the dispersion of such and the effects it has in the marine ecosystem. However University of Alicante (UA) Biologists conclude that the placement of a diffuser mechanism increases the brine mixture with water and avoids possible impacts on the environment with the diffusers recovering marine wealth around desalination and the placement of one such diffuser took place just off the Mar Menor coastline last week. This scientific work has been published in the journal "Water Research" after analyzing eight years of the possible effects of discharges from San Pedro del Pinatar’s desalination plant by lead researcher José Luis Sánchez Lizaso. In operation since 2006, the output of the brine (a pipe 1,293 feet in diameter) was placed on the seabed at a depth of 33 meters and 5km offshore to avoid affecting the seagrass meadows. The study shows that salinity at the closest point to the discharge will be reduced from 49 to 38.5 grams per liter, allowing marine communities return to a state similar to that existing before the desalination. This regeneration process will occur relatively quickly since the process has been completed in several months rather than years. It is estimated that the production of desalinated water aimed at alleviating shortages for human consumption stands at 24.5 million cubic meters per day, of which about 4.2 confined to the shores of the Mediterranean Sea (17 percent of world production). Spain is currently one of the major powers in this field with 7 percent of global capacity, with seven out of ten of its plants in the regions located on the Mediterranean shore. The plant in San Pedro del Pinatar has a production capacity of 130,000 cubic meters per day.

BILINGUAL EDUCTION FREE O NLINE SPANISH INTRODUCED IN COUR SE FO R FO REI GNER S ALMOST 500 SCHOOLS Experts now realize that language training is essential for greater guarantees and access to increasingly demanding labour markets. This is something that the Ministry of Education has also come to realise and, as such, authorities have said that they aim to accelerate the implementation of multilingual education into Valencian schools.

From next year, according to Education Councillor María José Catalá, as the Valencian Region invest more resources into bilingual educational programmes, there will be 477 schools in the Region that will offer lessons using the multilingual model with all schools fulfilling the programme by the year 2020-21. Of those 153 will be in Alicante, 53 in Castellon and 271 in Valencia. There will also be 42 new centers where the amount of multilingual education currently offered, will be doubled. Establishments will be able to choose the courses that they offer in, predominantly, English. They will vary from natural or social sciences, to physical education, and mathematics The councilor said that in order to implement this type of multilingual education it is necessary to have a highly trained teachers, which is why in recent years the teacher training courses in the region have focused on the English language and on new technologies.

The Alicante provincial government has an on-line Spanish course available for foreign residents, with 600 places available for the six-month long course that covers a variety of levels. Although the deadline for registration has passed, it has now been extended until all places are allocated. The course is available via a secure connection to those who successfully enrol, and the good news is that it is totally free, and an officially recognised course provided by the government body. In order to be eligible, you simply have to be a registered resident of the province of Alicante, and have a valid padrón certificate issued within the last six months by your local town hall, such as Orihuela or Torrevieja, for example. The whole course lasts for six months and there are 600 places available, which includes level and progress tests. Each student will receive a course acceptance email, with information and access codes for an interface that is available in 20 different languages, with the tutorials available in Spanish, English,

German, Italian, Dutch and French. There is also technical support available in Spanish, English and French. Students will then have access to the system 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from your PC, smart phone or tablet, with Android, iPhone and iPad all supported, and you can customise the course according to your interests and your progress. Because of the limited number of places available, in order to ensure your place you must take a brief test during the first week after receiving the access codes, and in order to ensure you don´t give up, you must spend at least 10 hours online during the first month of the course. If you spend at least 50 hours learning over the six month duration of the course you will receive a certificate in recognition of your achievement. If you are interested in registering, you can send an application form by email to ciudadanosextranjeros@diputacionalicante.es, or apply directly on the website, www.ciudadanosextranjeros.es

PSOE GAFFE The PSOE has apologised after accidentally voting in parliament for a proposal on abortion that his own party is against. Socialist chief Pedro Sanchez pressed the wrong button during the vote on whether to debate a law requiring minors to get parental permission before getting an abortion. "I deeply regret my error," he said. The move, proposed by the governing Popular Party (PP), passed easily due to its parliamentary majority. Sanchez faced ridicule on social media for the gaffe. Some users drew comparisons with Homer Simpson, the US cartoon character who once avoided a nuclear meltdown by guessing which button to press in an emergency.

WAR ON TERRORISM SPAIN'S foreign affairs minister has suggested setting up an international 'terrorism tribunal' in a bid to fight the spread of Jihad at the Euro-Arab summit meeting in Barcelona last week. ALICANTE TO ATTRACT 15 CRUISE SHIPS TO JUNE

In an attempt to prevent the leakage of tourists to other neighbouring municipalities city tourist chiefs say that they will vigorously promote Alicante during berthing to make the passengers aware of everything that the city offers. They have also recently launched a tourist train that will connect the port with the city moving passengers backwards and forwards between their cruise ship and the town. The aim is to provide easy access to the centre which it is hoped will help to retain the visitors in the area. The train will also provide a tour of the city centre. Itineraries that will be made available to visitors have been designed with two objectives: to give easy access to trade and catering establishments in the city, as well as many local sites of interest. The tourist train will also enable the visitors to be moved around the city with the minimum possible impact on traffic in the urban centre as shown last week by Mayor Miguel Valor when he ‘test rode’ the train, together representatives of Sis Tours, one of the company’s that promotes the initiative. This new service strengthens the position of the Port of Alicante amongst emerging competitors who are all similarly vying for trade from the new brand of ships that are now cruising around the Mediterranean. Similar offensives undertaken by other coastal municipalities in the province, such as Benidorm and Torrevieja, who are

also hoping to attract the revenue from the ships, their berthing fees, and other passenger benefits, has forced Alicante to be more aggressive in the sector to try to keep ahead of the competition. Tourists arriving on cruise ships are considered high value to local economies, the average expenditure of each of which is estimated at 75 euros per person per day. Iin addition to this must also be added the spend of crews, which can also be quite significant. According to the new chairman of the Port Authority, Juan Ferrer, the port of Alicante plans to double the number of cruise passengers during 2015 to 88,000 passengers who will arrive aboard 49 vessels. Last year ended with 34,583 passengers landed on 29 cruises, so the figure expected this year represent a little more than double than numbers previously received. Meanwhile the head of the Spanish Port Agency Spain Jose Llorca said that” the Spain expects the number of visiting cruise ship passengers to exceed the historic level of 8 million as the business benefits from factors such as the depreciation of the euro versus the dollar”. He further added that” the cruise sector is a pillar of his country’s tourism industry”. The Ports of Spain this year’s edition of the cruise industry’s most important event brings together representatives of 24 port authorities and 40 firms in the tourism sector, a larger contingent than in previous years. Apart from Spain’s cultural, historical and gastronomic treasures, the “good infrastructure and the adequate depth” of Spanish ports make the country attractive for cruise lines, he said. Spain is well established as tourism destination, “but we need to renovate constantly and to be creative” to attract more and more cruise passengers, he said. Barcelona and the Balearic Islands still account for 64 percent of the cruise ships that dock in Spain, representing 4.9 million passengers. And last Wednesday, hopefully a sign of things to come, the arrival in Alicante of the cruise liner Britannia with 4300 pasengers on board en route fom Gibraltar to Barcelona.

The most recent cruise liner to dock in Alicante just last Wenesday, Britannia carrying 4,300 passengers and 1400 crew

FALSELY ACCUSED FATHER REUNITED WITH HIS SON A year and a half after 36 year old businessman Michelangelo last had contact with his son, Cristian Miguel Angel, the pair were able to enjoy a long overdue embrace when the 9 year old child finally returned to Torrevieja.

Michelangelo’s ordeal began two and a half years ago back in December 2012 when his former partner and boy’s mother Lissette SC falsely accused him of ill treatment. He was arrested by the Guardia Civil and spent the next 24 hours behind bars, during which time the mother took the opportunity to leave the country with her child. For a long period Lissette completely disappeared.

She left no details of her whereabouts and Michelangelo was unable to make any contact. Only knowing that she was in Italy the father made contact with relatives, before travelling to the country to begin his search. After three trips, one of which resulted in a serious road accident and almost cost him his life, and having spent many thousands of euros in the process, Michelangelo engaged an Italian lawyer who was able to trace the young boy and his mother to Brescia, a few kilometers from Milan. Nearly 16 hours and 1,600 kilometers later Michelangelo finally arrived in Brescia. He said that nothing else mattered at the time, his only wish being to be reunited with his son. Speaking to the Spanish Press he said that when he eventually came across the boy he had been left alone in a park. "I was able to talk to him," recounts the father, "he was wearing a dirty tracksuit", but the child was nevertheless delighted to see him. “He was a little introverted at the time but when he came to realise who I was his feelings were quickly restored”. At first, the boy was "introverted" and told the man "who had told him he was going to abuse." Nevertheless, the child has assured him that "luckily you picked me park '. Cristian, for the moment, and has been able to return to their "old friends" and family who raised him from birth. Now, after another 18 months of court wrangling, Cristian has finally been allowed to return to his former home in Torrevieja and although at this stage it is not known how long the reunion will last both father and son are currently enjoying each other’s company and making up for valuable lost time.

NO COMPENSATION FOR TABARCA DEMOLITIONS The Supreme Court has denied compensation for the demolition of properties on the island of Tabarca because it hasn’t yet been carried out. The Superior Court of Valencia (TSJ) denied the right of compensation to the owners of the bungalows which were erected 20 years ago on protected land, at least until they have been demolished, the judgement says.

MOBSTER HELD One of Italy's most wanted gangsters has been detained on the Costa del Sol in Spain while trying to withdraw money from a post office. Lucio Morrone, known as "Spalluzzella", is described by Spain's Guardia Civil as head of a dangerous clan in the Naples Camorra. He was sentenced to 20 years in jail for drug trafficking and on the run for five years, says Spain's Civil Guard. Morrone was caught in a joint operation involving Spanish and Italian police.

But despite the eviction of the occupants early last year, the Supreme Court is now voicing their doubts that demolition will ever take place. Because of changes to the law which have been introduced since the demolition order was originally made by the Supreme Court (SC) in 2009 The owners say they are claiming "damages for injuries related to the judicial ruling that cancelled their license of occupation. They say they have also lost income as a result of previously anticipated rental and holiday bookings that have been lost since the judgment was made. Now, in a judgment made in December 2014, which was released last week, the Supreme Court have partially rejected the appeal filed by the owners against a decision of the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment stating that they can not claim compensation for damage that has not yet occurred. The properties are located at the junction of la cala Birros and according to the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Environment they were illegally built in an area within the boundaries of one of Tabarca’s protected areas.

TWIN BOYBAND TO VISIT TORREVIEJA Spanish singing duo Gemeliers, formed by real life twin brothers Jesús and Daniel Oviedo, will be appearing in concert in Torrevieja this summer.

Website crypto problems on the Spanish online voting registration website are causing it to generate all manner of security warnings. Attempts to visit the sede.ine.gob.es site – run by Spain's National Statistics Institute and introduced this year for municipal/regional elections –lead to users being confronted with a security warning. However, the warnings vary depending on the operating system and browser a surfer is using. A spokesman said that such website problems are sadly common.

CATHOLIC BASTION More than half of Spaniards admit that they are either "not religious" or are "convinced atheists", according to a new global study that shows the dramatic loss of faith in the traditionally Roman Catholic nation. In fact with one in five Spaniards insisting that they are "convinced atheists" Spain ranks fifth on the global list of adamant non-believers. The study surveyed 63,398 people in 65 countries in a bid to discover global religious trends. Once the bastion of Roman Catholicism, only 37 percent of those polled described themselves as "religious".

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL Having gained success on the Spanish children´s version of The Voice, La Voz Kids, the pair were rocketed to stardom and became the musical sensation for countless teen girls and boys across the country. Not only have their concerts been attended by tens of thousands of people last year, they are also a huge success on social networks such as Twitter, Instagram and You Tube. The Torrevieja concert will take place on August 7th in the Eras de la Sal, although it will start a little late for some of their younger fans, starting at 10pm. Tickets, which are about to go on sale, are priced at around 25 euro, although there is the opportunity for a VIP pass which includes entrance to the sound check, a picture opportunity, and the chance to meet the boys themselves. Ironically for a pair who found fame at the age of 15, anybody under 16 has to be accompanied by an adult, but there are no other restrictions on age, so everybody of any age can enjoy the concert. More details will be released as part of Torrevieja´s summer cultural program, with their spring agenda having only just been published and is available from the tourist information offices.

The lots include cars, all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles, trailers and even armoured vehicles, all at bargain prices of around 25 to 30 euro for a motorbike, little over 100 euro for a car, and just over 600 euro for the armoured SUV´s. One downside is that you have to bid for the vehicles in units of 10, in which the assets have been grouped. Another downside is the fact that all of the vehicles are of high mileage and nearing the end of their healthy working lives, and so the costs of maintenance and repair may well be considerable. You will also have to pay for the removal of the vehicles yourself, if you´re lucky enough to grab one of the bargain lots. The vehicles are located across the entire country and can be inspected by contacting the respective vehicle administration department of the corps. Interested parties need to move quickly though as the deadline for submitting bids is the 22nd of April. Oh, and by the way, the picture is for demonstration purposes only and is not necessarily of the vehicles for sale.

HEADING TO SPAIN

Traffic Officers Stop Truck Driven by Child

BRITISH pensioners are cashing in and heading abroad to make the most of new pension reforms. Buying a holiday home abroad – particularly in Spain – has been identified as ‘one of the main investments’ made by pensioners withdrawing large sums from their savings. Reforms introduced by UK chancellor George Osborne allow people unlimited withdrawals from their pensions after age 55. And while most people are not seeking an immediate payout it seems those that do are spending it overseas.

Officers from the Guardia Civil in Palencia were left surprised when they found an articulated lorry being driven by a 10 year old child. The incident occurred on an industrial estate in Paredes de Nava when officers observed the truck “zigzagging” along the road. Upon requesting that the vehicle stopped, they found the child at the wheel of the truck, accompanied by his 71 year old grandfather, who was in the passenger seat. Details of the man have been sent to the courts where he is facing charges of crimes against road safety, whereas the child will be dealt with through the office that deals with minor offences.

CAR THEFT BREAKERS ARRESTED Officers from the Guardia Civil have arrested three people, two men and a woman, all aged between 22 and 28 and of Spanish nationality, in the town of Agost, on suspicion of their involvement in a number of vehicle thefts from around the Alicante local area. The string of offences are believed to have taken place in towns including Alcoy, Alicante, Santa Pola, Orihuela, San Vicente del Raspeig and Elche, plus Murcia and Cartagena. According to the information just released, the arrests occurred last week in Agost, in a finca which was being used by the group to break down vehicles into component parts. Upon searching the premises, the officers found a warehouse in which the disassembled remains of at least six high end vehicles were recovered, many of the parts prepared and packaged for sale. The detainees were made available to the courts in Novelda.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

THE UNFRIENDLY EXPAT During this UK pre-election period, most of us will come to realise that statistics can be adjusted to mean almost anything to anyone. It was therefore with some cynicism that I read a recent article where the authors claimed that "Nearly one third of British expats have no local friends and refuse to stray beyond the safety of their British friendship groups". The study went on to claim that only one in four expats would describe their social group as mainly British, with one in 10 admitting that their friends were exclusively British. Only 10 per cent of expats claimed to mix mainly with local people, and more than one third couldn't be bothered to learn the language, with a quarter admitting that they were not at all interested in the culture that they found themselves living in. The implied message from the article was, of course, that British expats living overseas are a miserable lot, whilst expats from other countries are so much friendlier and easier to talk to. It all made for rather shocking reading, but then I remembered to add a rather hearty pinch of salt that I usually reserve for some of the more outrageous British tabloids. Integrating into a new community, trying to learn the language, however many mistakes, as well as appreciating the culture, is all part of the adventure and process of settling into a new home, a new community and a new country. Even though technology now means that it is easy to maintain contact with friends and family in the UK, it is local friends and neighbours who will be there to advise and to help in a crisis.

Admittedly, the attitude of the host country and its people also has an impact upon the happiness of the newly arrived expat and will help to determine how quickly expats settle. One survey claims that the vast majority of expats immediately feel at home in New Zealand, with similar responses from expats living in Canada. Again, it is the warmth of the welcome, and a shared language and culture that are the main factors for this result, but the same thing can happen in Spain, France, Italy and Portugal too. So what relevance does all this data have upon the expat contemplating moving to or already living in Spain or another European country? It is true that expat life can sometimes revolve around mixing with and socialising with expats from the same country of origin. Much the same criticism can be said about the Germans, Swedish, Irish and Norwegians who often feel more comfortable and sheltered by their own communities, who are anxious to build their own churches, schools and hospitals, using only their own shops, restaurants and bars. Many British, Irish, German or Norwegian urbanisations that I visited as a reporter in Spain were clearly defended against perceived 'outsiders', including those from the host country. As a newspaper reporter in Spain’s Costa Blanca, I once had the misfortune to report upon the misery of one Spanish couple who were being ostracised by their mainly British neighbours, for being the only Spanish couple living in 'their urbanisation'. When I attempted to discover the reasons for the hostility, a range of complaints were thrown at me, including the couple having meals, drinking and partying late at night, playing loud Spanish music, their untidy garden, as well as parking in the wrong places. On the face of it, most were trivial complaints from a colony of Brits who preferred to be in bed by 10.30pm, and unwilling to adjust to the culture, timing and habits of residents from the host country. Sadly, I later discovered that the Spanish family could stand the unpleasantness no longer and moved away from the area. The expats had missed good opportunities to learn from their

Many expats are uncomfortable straying from their own environment

Spanish neighbours. If they had bothered to learn a little Spanish, much could have been resolved through friendly discussion, as a well as adopting more of a 'live and let live' attitude to their neighbours. It seemed that most of these expats were not happy people, and most would have been much happier living in Bognor Regis than in an expat urbanisation in the Costa Blanca. On a more positive note, my own experiences of British expats is that most are more than happy to mix with their European neighbours, given the opportunity. Often, failure to mix is due to lack of motivation to learn the language, together with traditional British reserve and, unlike the article written around some rather suspect statistics, it has very little to do with a lack of willingness to make friends. PODEMOS STILL EDGE POLLS WITH RULING PP TRAILING THIRD In an opinion poll conducted by Metroscopia just last week, for the fourth month running, Spain’s anti-austerity party Podemos ("We Can") held a narrow lead over the country’s two mainstream parties, the ruling Partido Popular and the opposition Socialist party, PSOE.

Pablo Iglesias, leader of Podemos, poses with candidates for the Madrid Regional elections As such, if a General Election were to be held now Podemos would win by a narrow majority even though the poll shows that it has lost some support in recent months. Podemos took five seats in elections for the European Parliament last May, just a few weeks after its formation, showing just how the austerity-weary Spaniards were turning away from the main establishment parties. The next Municipal elections are due in just 5 weeks time with the next national election expected to take place towards the end of this year. At a political rally last week Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy stressed that the economic turnaround has made the Spain economy one of the fastest growing economies in the euro zone. However many still feel that it has yet to filter down with nearly one in four of working-age people remaining without a job.

VOLKSWAGEN PRESENTS NEW DIGITAL SUPERCAR Volkswagen is expanding its GTI fleet and sending a new supercar onto the digital race circuit. The engine roaring under the bonnet of the GTI Supersport is a 503 HP VR6 TSI coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG). The design of this digital supercar combines the Volkswagen icon with sheer racing design. Following last year’s roadster, another version of the GTI, with its long racing tradition, can now head for the starting line on Gran Turismo®6, exclusively on PlayStation®3. The first impression of this racer already shows that the Supersport is what fans want and is designed for racing. 665 Nm of torque catapult the virtual GTI to 62 mph per hour from a standing start in only 3.6 seconds. At full throttle, the virtual racer reaches a top speed of over 186 mph. The gigantic power output is transferred to the virtual asphalt via 4MOTION all-wheel drive and 20-inch GTI advanced alloy wheels. A glance in the rear view mirror is enough to worry competitors of the Supersport GTI: the basic shape of the body is still reminiscent of GTI ancestors but every pore of this latest GTI offspring exudes racing character. Proportions and body surfaces have been optimised for an extremely low centre of gravity and widespread use of carbon elements makes the new digital supercar a real lightweight with a power-toweight ratio of only 2.5 kg per horsepower. At the broad, powerful front end of the aerodynamically optimised body, prominent features are vertical light modules and generous air intakes with the honeycomb configuration typical of the model. While the broad shoulders at the rear provide the ideal ventilation for the brakes, the prominent roof-edge spoiler and flamboyant diffuser make the Supersport hug the track when fighting for the fastest lap time. Volkswagen’s latest digital creation can be clothed in “Reflex Silver”, “Gran Turismo Red”, “Lapiz Blue” or “Oryx White” and is now available to Gran Turismo 6 players for downloading.

These are just a few of the hundreds of positive recommendations Chris has received over the years - Why take chances! Garage Services. ORIHUEL A COSTA RBL GET A TOUR OF SPAIN’S TRAFFIC L AWS The Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion gathered at the Olympia Restaurant Mil Palmeras last Thursday evening for their regular monthly meeting although with rather more anticipation than is usually the case as the evening’s guest speaker was Francisco Morales, a serving member of the Guardia Civil. Francisco, who is one of a team of five volunteers behind the increasingly popular N332 Website and Facebook page, explained that he was delighted to attend the meeting. After his colleague Mark Nolan had explained the thinking behind the Facebook venture, which had grown from humble beginnings just two short months ago to a reference site with over 10,000 followers, Francisco took to the floor with his presentation on Driving in Spain. He started with background on the Guardia Civil themselves, many of whom are currently serving across the globe alongside the United Nations. He explained that having returned from serving a 12 month tour in a conflict zone himself he joined Trafico in Torrevieja when he quickly became aware of the difficulties faced by expatriate drivers in Spain. His concerns were shared by a number of colleagues so, together, they hit on the idea of the Facebook site. At no stage though did they ever consider just how popular it would become with it now reaching the point where it virtually needs full time attention. Francisco spoke in very general terms about problems experienced by expat drivers as he briefly examined the law and although he wasn’t able to deal with specific problems he did take questions which were

answered by email the following day. Following the presentation the Branch Chairman Keith Carter spoke of the close relationship that had developed between the Guardia Civil and the Royal British Legion in the area, thanking him for his talk and inviting him to attend the Remembrance Day Service in Mil Palmeras. Francisco was then presented with a Certificate of Appreciation together with a number of small souvenirs.

Further information on either project can be obtained by email at: news@n332.es. Further information on the Orihuela Costa Branch of the RBL is at: www.britishlegion.org.uk/counties/spain-north

DOMESTIC AIR TRAFFIC GROWS BY 22% AT EL ALTET Domestic traffic has grown by 22.5 percent at the airport in Alicante-Elche in March, compared to the same month last year, with an additional 107,628 passengers. A HUNDRED DONORS GIVE BLOOD IN HORADADA The Alicante Transfusion Centre was in Pilar de la Horadada last weekend where approximately 100 donors turned up to give blood. Of the donors 19 were giving blood for the very first time. Councillor Elisabet Marcos, who attended the centre herself, said that all expectations had been met with everyone encouraged by the numbers attending although the one disappointment was that 12 people who attended were not allowed to donate. Some of these were British, contributions from whom are still not allowed in Spain for fear of Variant Creutzfeld-Jacob Disease. Brits are still not able to donate if they have spent time either visiting or living in the United Kingdom for a cumulative time of 3 months or more between January 1st, 1980, through to December 31st, 1996. Neither are they allowed to donate blood if they have received a transfusion in any country of the UK, which includes England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Island, but also includes the Channel Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar and the Isle of Man, any time from the 1st January 1980, right up to present day.

Following their contributions all donors were given a small gift by the Department of Health. Everyone was also entered into a raffle, the prizes for which were dinner for two and an all inclusive weekend getaway, presented by local transport company Grupo Caliche. A spokeperson for the Transfusion service said that blood is still in extremely short supply and is currently being used in the province at a rate of approximately 250 units daily. He said that he thought the shortage was simply down to a lack of awareness of current needs and a fear of the procedure.

VALENCIA CHILDHOOD IMMUNIZATION SCHEDULE The Department of Health has given the green light to the new childhood immunization schedule, as published last week in the new calendario de vacunaci贸n infantil

Of the hundred donors 19 were giving blood for the very first time

As a result, all girls aged 12 to 13 are now being offered HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccination as part of the childhood vaccination programme. The vaccine protects against cervical cancer. Because of the sheer numbers of girls involved and to ensure adequate vaccination coverage, the vaccine is currently being given to girls who were born in 2001 and 2002. Next year the programme will be extended to include girls born in 2003 and 2004. The HPV vaccine consists of two injections into the upper arm spaced at least six, and not more than 24 months apart.

IN THE BUNKER WITH ‘MICK THE GRIP’ DAVE PELZ’S BACK GARDEN at Austin, Texas, is laid out like a golf course, with replica holes from TPC Sawgrass and St. Andrew’s. Short game coach Pelz’s students have collected over 20 majors between them, and he has patented more than 70 clubs, including the two ball putter. He pioneered the use of statistics in the 1970s, after working for space agency NASA. Pelz says: “I was taught that it was a drive and a shot to the green and then you putted. But I researched how many shots players hit. They drove the ball, then they would go for the green and miss, then hit a chip or pitch shot or two, then perhaps three putts; they had maybe five short game shots. I worked on that. Players may never conquer the power game, but anyone can conquer the short game with constant practice, even in the back garden.” (He means a Texas back garden.) QUINTA DO LAGO golf resort in Portugal is offering amateurs the chance to improve their chipping and putting at their new “Is Your Short Game Good Enough” clinics. For around £700 the Paul McGinley Golf Academy will give you three days of intense tuition and three rounds of golf on Quinta do Lago’s championship courses. Much better than digging up the garden. WITH A PACKED schedule in 2016 including the Olympics the final member of the U.S. Ryder Cup team will not be chosen until after the PGA Championship, five days before the matches begin. Not a lot of time to build team spirit, and the U.S. team needs all the team spirit it can get.

BALTIMORE BASED CLOTHING GIANT Under Armour’s revenue soared to 3 billion dollars last year. It is now America’s 2nd biggest sportswear retailer behind Nike. “Jordan Spieth has a 10 year contract with us, and he’s just getting started,” they crowed this week. Nike was unavailable for comment. LAST WEEK’S RBC HERITAGE CLASSIC at Hilton Head Island, S. Carolina, is a favourite with Tour players, many of whom enjoy staying with their families at the famous Sea Pines Resort and mingling with the fans. Arnold Palmer won the initial tournament in 1969, and the media gave glowing reports of Pete Dye's superb new links course at Harbour Town. Unfortunately, Pete Dye had thought the tournament would be held at the Ocean Course, not his newly constructed one at Harbour Town, and his wasn’t finished. Dye had to dash over to the course and fill the bunkers with sand, just as Palmer and his opponent were walking up the fairway. Fortunately, neither hit a bunker shot. The media would have had a field day. THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP tees off on May 5th at TPC

Sawgrass, with the ‘Island Green’ 17th that seems to give even the most accurate ball strikers the jitters. The longest putt recorded on the 17th was 59 feet, 9 inches, by Bernhard Langer during the second round of the 2008 tournament. In the 2001 tournament Tiger Woods sank a 60ft downhill putt in the third round, but because it started off the putting surface it didn’t count. It still looked pretty incredible. SPEAKING OF DOWNHILL PUTTS, School of Golf’s Martin Hall says: “Don't rest the putter on the grass at address. Instead, elevate the putter slightly above the grass. That will put some tension in your arms and help to take away the urge to hit the ball hard”. PADRAIG HARRINGTON: “I got through all eight seasons of Breaking Bad on my last China trip. When you’re staying in places like that and you can’t go out to the movies, you just sit in your suite with room service and watch the box. There’s really nothing else to do at some events.” Life is so hard. Until next time, Happy Golfing. Contact Mick for all your regripping and repair requirements. Tel: 638 859 475.

CERESA CRIBBAGE April 13th & our penultimate league game and congratulations are due to Dorothy’s Magpies who have won the league with 1 week to go. This week they hit hard on Peter’s Galleon who had just 2 pairs with 1 win each while 2 pairs scored 2 wins each for the Magpies. Still in 2nd place are Richard’s Ospreys after their close win at Catorce whose best were Phil and Carol with 2 wins, only exceeded by Sue G & Sid with a maximum 3 wins for the Ospreys. Still in with a shout at 3rd place and moving clear of 4th spot are Brian’s Jaguars who had a comfortable win with Basil & Shelagh best on 3 wins while for Nacho’s Voles the zero return was by Ron & Val leaving them in 4th place. Up at Rojales, Steve’s Steakhouse stumbled against a comfortable Mike’s Peacocks with a pleasing return for Ann & Robert with their 3 wins leaving Brian & Les doomed on zero for the Steakhouse. My Falcons had our revenge against Geoff’s Lo Crispin with our 1st win in 11 weeks and a cheer for Bill & Sue on 3 wins for us, leaving John & Stan on zero for the Taverners. Keith’s Merlins had their 2nd successive win thanks to Jan & Brian with their 2 wins while Jim’s Sharks were without their bite this week with Hilary & Ann scoring a miserly zero. Top scorers this week with a super 8-1 are Ayliff’s Da Vinci’s against the unlucky Peter’s Jays whose only success were Sue & Louise leaving Lynda & Pat disappointed for Da Vinci’s with only 2 wins. At Mr Smiths, Geoff’s Jays enjoyed their good win against Brian’s Meson Galea whose pair of Russ & Diane blundered with a zero score while Shirley & Geoff excelled for The Jays with 3 wins.

Week 26 saw the top three teams all win, and with the next five teams all losing, a gap is opening up at the top of the table and the title now looks to be a three horse race. All matches finished with 6-3 results except for a fantastic 8-1 win by The Tavern at home to Bull Flanagan. Coopers Arms had only their fourth win of the season, but their second in two weeks, against Green Baize Minis who are fifth in the league ! In the other results, third placed Bar Pepito had a solid 6-3 win against fourth placed Monos A, Shenanigans Shakers came from 3-0 down against their second team, Shenanigans Movers, to win 6-3, a feat that Monos B also achieved against Mr Sniffs having also been 3-0 down – a night for come backs ! Green Baize Amigos got back to winning ways after two loses in a row, to record a 6-3 win against Rayz Bar to stay at the top of the table but if Bar Pepito win their game in hand, it would mean the top three teams are separated by two points. RESULTS: Green Baize Minis 3-6 Coopers Arms Monos B 6-3 Mr Sniffs Shenanigans Movers 3-6 Shenanigans Shakers Bar Pepito 6-3 Monos A Rayz Bar 3-6 Green Baize Amigos The Tavern 8-1 Bull Flanagan

VISITORS FLOCK TO SAAM OPEN DAY Contrary to popular belief it is not always sunny and warm in Spain and the weather clearly demonstrated this on April 9th, which was cloudy and cold with very strong winds. Despite this, the SAMM Open Day proved extremely popular with over 70 visitors, English, Irish and German. They came from as far afield as Totana, Mazarron and Catral, all about an hour’s drive away; arriving at CTD in Los Narejos to find out about SAMM’s sailing activities, talk to the club members and see their boats. Among them were experienced, but lapsed sailors, keen to take up the sport again, complete novices wanting to ‘test the waters’ and a young girl on holiday with her grandparents. Unfortunately the strong winds prevented some boats being moored on the jetty, so the visitors could only be shown photographs and nobody could be given a trial sail. Everybody left their contact details and will be personally invited for a trial sail when the weather improves.

33

A further Open Day is planned for the autumn. To find out more about SAMM please visit their web site www.sailingmarmenor.com

plenty of smiles. Simon Williams Hyenas finished a comfortable second and well deserved, with Porter House ending third, their highest position to date. In Division 2 Breakaways were comfortable champions, losing just the one match, but taken to a draw on five occasions, this week by Karl Mallinson´s Ale House who have really found their mark of late. Que Pasa Kestrels finish strongly to finish a well deserved second, their tenth victory of the season and a real together side. Well done! Just three more weeks of the season remaining this week both Cup Finals are taking place, the first at Porter House where the Meerkats take on the Hyenas and down at Playa Flamenca in the Busters bar where Pint Depot Kings hope to topple the Porters from Porter House. The following week, April 30th, is reserved for SemiFinals of Mens, Ladies individuals, pairs and triples. The week after, May 7th will finalise all competitions and conclude the 2014-2015 season with the presentation of prizes. Both weeks will be at the Celler venue, formerly Decades and will include a complimentary buffet and the renowned league raffle with prizes valued at around €1,000. A captains notice will be distributed this week advising all players of registration and start times. Both evenings will have an 8.00 p.m. start with players registration opening at 7 p.m. but closing at 7.45 p.m. irrespective of the timing of individual events. Presentation evening will also include the Leader Newspaper Merit Awards for teams, ladies and mens performances which have been contested all season on a weekly basis. On to this week´s darts and the top match Meerkats v. Hyenas. Several players in current form really made it a night to remember. Nearly 50 tons and ton pluses most going the way of the Hyenas included a maximum from cuddly Spice and a wire away from a 144 out from Shaun Smith (after hitting 2 treble 20s). Lee Maiden just missed the bull for a more modest 127 out, but team mate Dave Frew topped the lot with a 142 out on D20. Magnificent! The Kats got off to a lively start via Paul Durrant on an 80 out, Smith hitting a 140 for the Hyenas. Spicer levelled on D16 and then hit a ton in the third, Smith adding two more. But it was Kat Frew who completed the leg on D5 after finding 133 and 121. Frew then partnered Pat Abrams in the first pair, Abrams opening with a 140, Smith a ton. Requiring 142, Frew found T17 first dart, unusual to say the least, then a further T17 and lastly D20 for a super 142 finish. Alex Nikolov made it 3-2 for the Kats plus a 140 followed by Spicer and Joe Hawkins expecting to level after a ton and 180 from the cuddly one. It was however Maiden who closed out for a 4-2 half time lead. Spicer opened the singles against Del Kingsbury in a shared 6 ton thriller, the Hyena coming out on top 2-0. Smith made it all square with 3 tons, opponent Maiden hitting 100 and 2x140. Abrams gave the Kats a slender one leg advantage taking out John Eyre, followed by Durrant winning two legs to nil against Harrison ensuring the draw and more importantly keeping the Kats unbeaten record intact. Nikolov faced Hawkins in the 11th and took the opener on D10 after a 103. A further two tons followed from the Bulgarian, Hawkins finding two of his own plus D16 to level. Two more tons from the Hyena were enough to see off the Nikolov challenge, Hawkins completing the 501 on D1. Frew took the first on D20 in the last match of the evening hoping to take the match for the Kats. Opponent Joe Miller had other ideas and returned 2x100 in the first, 140,100 and D20 in the second and 140,100,D18 in the third for a well deserved draw. Breakaways finished their season as top dogs of

Division 2, with just one defeat, but it so nearly was two as the Ale House went 6-4 up with a real chance of toppling the champions. It was 3 apiece at half time, courtesy of Ivan Jones D18 Sarah Simpson D3 and Paul Lear D4 for the Breakaways. Ian Phillips D4, Kay Hobbis D1 and Karl Mallinson D18 gaining the honours for the Ale House. Kelvin Angel made it 4-3 for the Alers on D16, Mike Douglas 95,100 and D2 making it all square once again. Brian Hobbis had a tidy game finishing on D2 for the Alers fifth leg, followed by Tony Woods ensuring the draw on D2 against a lively Mike Snow. With a win in their sights Mallinson´s men looked a certainty for both points. Enter left the reliable Sarah Simpson to take the 11th on D4 and Jones on D2 for the 12th leg draw and shared points. The Porter House ended the season on a convincing win against the Junction Jackals. A 5-1 half time lead, pointed the way to a heavy Jackals defeat, despite three tons in the second triple from Phil de Lacy, Kenny Wilkinson and Jimmy Gray, in a leg won by Peter Ayres on D14. It went the other way in the third, Matt Jackson hitting 2x100 but Steph Simpson finding D10 for the Jackals only leg of the match. Sid Cross 135,D2, Ray Hayes 100,D8, Ray Sanderson D20 and Ayres D9 taking the Porters total to 5 at the break. Jackson had a comfortable win in the first singles on D10 and D19, similarly Brian Nash 140,95,D9,D20 to take the match and points. Debbie Metcalfe won two of the three against Simpson on D8 and D4 in a game that included a 121 and 90 for the Porter. Nice one Debbie. Ayres gave his usual sound performance with 2x121, D20 and D4, Cross doing a similar job on de Lacy. Captain Ray Sanderson concluded the evening winning two of three on D4 against Nigel Elvery. Finally, Derek Kingsbury and myself have decided this is to be our last season at the helm of the Euronics league. This year is our sixth full session after taking over the Luke Salt league part way through the 2009 season. One or two changes have been implemented, primarily our sponsorship with the Euronics company and Debbie Wright who have been exceptionally generous and supportive during their three years of involvement. The Leader newspaper has also played a major part in the Euronics success by way of informing our players of results within the full page coverage of Euronics darts every week. We introduced the free issue top of the range dart board to ensure every team played on the same quality board week in week out, a new one issued each season. Most recently, in fact for the past two seasons, each bar has been allocated around 9 adverts per season published in the Leader, all part of the participants entry fees. Quite innovative and well received. All in all, I hope the readers of this column, players and bars have enjoyed their six seasons of Thursday evening darts as we both have enjoyed yours for 99% of the time! A report will of course be published to cover the next three weeks of Euronics darts. Over and out!

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY By Mike Chapman Firstly the result of our delayed Easter Egg competition last Friday which took the form of a 2 ball better ball was a win for last years winners and organisers Joyce McClusky and Olga Douglas with a very good score of 44 pts. In second place on 43 pts were Marleen Billen and Ken Robertson. The lucky winners of the booby prize was the pairing of Liz Robertson and Brian Townend with 28 pts. Brian Dent won the prize for nearest the pin on the 6th with Jan Svendsen nearest the pin in two on the 15th. A big thank you to Joyce and Olga for organising the event. We started this week with the ever popular Dusty Bin (3-2-1) competition with three scores counting on the first hole, two on the second and one on the third and so on throughout the round. The winners with a score of 80 pts were the team of Lindsay Forbes, Olga Douglas, Peter Dunn and Paul (guest).

On a cold and very windy day 60 members and guests travelled the short distance to Las Colinas to cheer on Captain, Ian Comaskey, on his final day as the "Head Honcho". The course was in its normal great condition and many thanks go to Ana and her staff for looking after us so well. Ian Comaskey with a massive support headed to the first tee to drive out on his final day. His nerves must have been jangling as he took as many practice swings as he took in the rest of the round, in fact the photographer used up a roll of film before he hit the ball! He then went on to hit his best shot of the year, right down the middle, well done Ian. This was the start of a long day but with so many players they kept up the pace and were not slow, perhaps keeping moving to ward off the cold. Still the chairman was happy for once with no complaints from him about slow play. A quick turn around after the golf and over a hundred members and guests in all of their finery arrived at Las Ramblas for the Captain's dinner and awards night. An excellent venue and meal, many thanks to Sergio and his staff, especially the bar staff who kept the speakers well lubricated with red wine! With so many sponsors there were prizes on every hole, winners on the day as follows: Nearest Captain's Drive - Eddie Simpson 1st - NTP in 3 - Paul Cullen, 2nd - NTP in 3 - John Murphy 3rd - Longest Drive - Michael Clarke, 4th - NTP in 2 - Paul Cullen

Well done to all players who enjoyed a good day's golf. A special thank you to all of our sponsors, too many to mention but Captain Ian will be getting around to thank them personally. On Wednesday it was the 4th round of our Monthly Medal Championship with the top 5 in both the Gent's and Ladies Divisions receiving points ranging from 6 pts for first place to 2 pts for fifth position. All others completing their rounds receiving one point. The player with the most points from the best four of six rounds being crowned champion. On the day prizes are available for the top 3 in each category as normal. Despite the threat of rain in the air we managed to complete our rounds and it was the ladies who took first place in both categories with Benedicte Kruse scoring a magnificent net 68 and Marleen Billen scoring very well again with a net 70. Benedicte will receive the 6 pts in the Ladies Division while John Collins following his excellent net 72 will receive the 6 pts in the Gent's Division. The winners on the day were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Benedicte Kruse 68 Svendsen 73 Cat 2. 1st Marleen Billen 70 Holtham 73

BEALE EDGES OUT GALLARD IN CLOSE FINAL The final of the San Javier Golf Society was played on Wednesday 15th April at Altorreal between two former Captains when Bob Gallard met Barry Beale in a most absorbing contest. Played in just the right spirit of competitiveness and friendship, Bob and Barry fought out a cracking battle with Barry just coming out on top 2&1. Having exchanged a hole apiece on the first two, Barry inched ahead on the 4th and it remained that way until the par 5 9th, which was to provide possibly the decisive moment. Two good drives were almost adjacent and Bob put his second perfectly placed for a wedge to the green. Barry’s second found the rough and having taken a penalty drop still had a daunting 5 iron shot over trees which he hit to the heart of the green. Bob then had what is normally called ‘a Hamlet moment’ having found the bunker and instead of going all square found himself walking off 2 down after 9. It was a long way from over though and after Barry had gone 3 up with 4 to play Bob showed he was not going to go down without a battle and won the next 2 holes, to be 1 down with 2 to play. The par 3 17th saw Barry sink a 4 footer for his par to end the contest after Bob’s par putt had just missed and both players shook hands knowing they had been in a game worthy of the final.

RUBY’S GOLF SOCIETY AT ALTORREAL Today the 10th of April, was our monthly fun day and Altorrreal was our destination, the work that the ground staff are putting in there is obviously paying off as the course was in excellent condition, and with good weather and no wind it was certainly a day for fun golf. Mixing up the scoring with double points on selective holes made for an interesting outcome with the final results, especially as our selection for nearest the pin in three was a shortened hole due to the tee being temporarily positioned on the fairway. This hole was fiercely contested with lots of players on the green for 2 (just like Augusta) but the hole was eventually won by Bill Malcolm. Nearest the pin in two was Ivie Davies who also got nearest on one of the par three's, the other two were

taken by Theresa Wright and Captain Nigel. Best front nine was Theresa and best back nine was Tony Harrison. Buck Taylor won the silver division and Jim McCarthy won the gold division and overall prize. Back at the Med Bar where the food supplied was excellent as usual, the football card was won by Di Davies. Many thanks to Steve at the Med Bar for continuing to support and feed us. Our next outing is at Alicante on the 24th April, any one wishing to join us for this or any other game please put your name down on the list which is displayed in The Med Bar, or e-mail rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk

HAPPY DAYS GOLF SOCIETY By Lubbertus On Tuesday 14th April all the team members were looking forward to a great day’s golf at the amazing Alhama Signature golf course, however, the omens seemed to be conspiring against them. Before they even left there were too few cars to take all those wanting to go, and only the generosity of the Marinasol Restaurant saved the day by offering their transport. Alhama itself is a very long 6,884 meters par 72 course personally designed by Jack Nicklaus. The course weaves between 5 large lakes and 116 challenging bunkers, making it a very challenging course for any player, at whatever level, but the difficulty of the course was compounded on this day by very, very strong winds. These factors, plus being held up for over 20 minutes while some foreign visitors went fishing in one of the lakes to recover lost golf balls conspired to make the day a very slow round. Although the conditions hampered play somewhat John McGregor and Steve Nash finished first on 53 points, with Kevin Barratt and Ken Farrow second with 48 points. Third place was abandoned due to the conditions, however Billy Wilson excelled himself by achieving nearest the pin at both hole 7 and 17. As you can see, playing golf is not always perfect plays on perfect days on idyllic courses with perfect weather. Things can and do go wrong, but that just highlights the fun that the players share. Should you want to join Happy Days Golf Society as a member, or just for some golf playing, then contact Steve, or any member of the staff at the Marinasol Restaurant at Cabo Roig and they would be happy to talk to you. The Happy Days Golf Society’s next competition is on 28th April at Campamor Golf course, so please contact Steve for details.

SPANGLISH GOLF SOCIETY AT FONT DEL LLOP ON 15TH APRIL 2015 In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services This was the fourth meeting of the new year for the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 17 players visited the established course at Font Del Llop taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The weather forecast was for rain and we did get wet for 3-4 holes but later it was pleasant and sunny although the course was busy and the pace of play was very slow. The winners on the day were as follows: 1st – Brian Proctor – 37 points 2nd – Bob Hewitson – 34 points 3rd – Mike Probert – 33 points 4th – Chris Butland – 32 points Nearest the Pins – Mike Probert and Chris Butland

After the game we returned to the Spanglish bar, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their support. Unfortunately less than 50% of the players returned to the bar(disappointingly without prior notification) and we used the prize fund to pay for meals that had been prepared and not used. Our next fixture is at Vistabella on on Wednesday 20th May 2015 and visitors and guests are welcome because this is very much a social golfing group rather than a formal golf society. If you are interested in joining the group call Paul Cawte on 966731223 or better still pop into the bar. Report by Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services on 966 704 752 or 661 345 931 or see us at our web-site at www.costa-blanca-greenfees.com.

IT’S RAFA GO MEZ TO THE RESCU E CD TORREVIEJA ..........1 FC JOVE ESPANOL ......0 BY SANDRA HEATH With just 5 games of the season remaining the Salineros really need to pick up the pace if they want to enhance their chances of reaching the promotion positions. Realistically there is just one playoff place left, that currently occupied by local rivals CD Orihuela, and even that might just be a game or so too far, still 6 points ahead of Torrevieja. But despite being unbeaten in seven their form is not quite good enough, five of those results ending in draws. Nothing less than 3 pts was the message from manager Pedreño going into Sunday evening’s fixture with relegation threatened FC Jove Español. And despite their lowly position the Sanvicenteros have had a couple of decent results themselves of late, including a well earned 3-1 home success against Cullera last weekend, so ‘pushovers’ they will certainly be not. I don’t think that anybody in the crowd was expecting another home game ‘goal glut’. And as expected Jove certainly tried to make a game of it although for the major part of the first period it was Torry that dominated in most areas with a much more disciplined display. The first major opportunity fell to Brani who saw his fierce drive turned around the post by keeper Millan. It was an excellent effort and the Jove keeper did well to turn it away. On 25 minutes it was the head of Carrasco that went close but again Millan was equal to the Torry veteran’s attempt.

Jorge was unlucky when his effort hit the bar on 35 minutes but then the crowd were in raptures when the next attack of the game brought the Torry goal. And it was an excellent build up that did the job bringing the very best as the home side moved the ball through just about every player, from back to front. The result was a little scrappy as the ball deflected into the net off the head of Rafa Gomez, but they all count and the lead was no more than Torry deserved for their open and exciting play. Unfortunately with a goal in the bank the second period saw Torry go off the boil as Jove came much more into the game. Obviously needing the points for reasons of their own the visitors began to take the game to their hosts although without providing too many problems for Oscar in the Torry goal. Indeed it took fully 30 minutes before their first real effort of the game but Oscar once again proved his worth when he saved well from Callero’s shot. Unfortunately the one blot on an otherwise professional display came on 35 minutes when Brani saw red for a foul outside the box on Adrian. Fortunately the resulting effort from Javo sailed harmlessly over the bar. With Orihuela beating Ribarroja 1-0 as we went to press the win has done little for Torry other than keep them on the leaders tails. Still 6 pts from those playoff positions the games are sadly running out. Next weekend Torry face a difficult trip to Novelda but the new found confidence they are currently enjoying under Pedreño is surely worth a goal start.

FRANK CLOSE DOES IT AGAIN BY CARL EAGLE

Following his great win in the Valencian Championships, Emerald Isle's Frank Close continued his winning ways by taking the Men's Singles title at his home club, beating Roy Mercer of Monte Mar 2116. In The Ladies Singles, Mel Highland of Quesada.beat Ann Marie Stevenson, representing Vistabella Club, 21-12. National Champions Keith and June Jones failed in their bid for the Mixed Pairs title this year, losing in an early round to a team from Country Bowls. The title went to John and Jill Albutt who overcame Carl and Ann Eagle in an extra-end decider. This year Calpe's small club were represented and reached the semifinal of the Mixed Rinks. That final was played out by the team of Mel and Colin Highland, Peta Rhodes and President John Muldoon of Quesada who fell to L and D Eldon, P Wardrop and Y Briden from El Cid club in a close-fought final. Mel Highland, who reached three finals, teamed up with newcomer to Quesada, Jaqui Johnston, in the Ladies Pairs but lost to D Lane and S Thompson of Finca Guila by one shot. In the Men's Pairs Keith Jones and Mal Hughes of San Luis club had a convincing victory over the Mazzaron Team of A Benton and M Chambers. Keith's team also won the Mixed Triples when he was joined by June and Colin Jackson. They beat El Cid's team of the Eldons playing with Yvonne Bryden, 32-25. President Jean Cooper presented the trophies and thanked the host club and the many spectators who enjoyed a feast of good bowling under a clear blue sky.
