CLARO CAMPAIGN GETS UNDERWAY
C.L.A.R.O. has presented its list of candidates for the forthcoming local elections in Orihuela on 24 May. There will be 13 parties competing for the votes of the people living in Orihuela, city and coast, more than in any other municipality in the area. Compared to previous years, the political scene in Orihuela is very confused with widespread political division and fragmentation. It is very important in this situation that the voice of Orihuela Costa in the next
government should be strong. Otherwise our interests are going to be forgotten for another 4 years. The C.L.A.R.O. list is very clear. 16 of the 25 candidates are from Orihuela Costa. 10 are non-Spanish EU residents and 6 are Spanish. The 10 nonSpanish Orihuela Costa C.L.A.R.O. candidates include 6 from the U.K., 2 from Sweden, 1 Austrian and 1 from Poland. In the lists of the three other main parties only 1 non-Spanish candidate is from the coast. Continued on Page 2

FROM PAGE ONE The official Popular Party has 1 non-Spanish EU resident from Orihuela Costa in its list of 25. The Socialist Party (PSOE) has none, the new Ciudadanos party, which is really the previous CLR party, has none and the breakaway Popular Party competing in the name of Foro Democratico has none. So much for the interest of the other parties in the future of Orihuela Costa which has a resident population as large as that of Orihuela city. 85% are non-Spanish. As the number of nonSpanish EU residents registered to vote is small, less than 20%, of those eligible, C.L.A.R.O. must attract votes from Orihuela city in order to achieve significant representation in the new Town Council and hopefully in the new government. It is therefore important that, as well as an already established group of enthusiastic supporters in Orihuela, two prominent Orihuela political figures, Asuncion Mayoral and Pablo Vidal have joined the C.L.A.R.O. list. They both served in the outgoing government as members of the CLR-CLARO group. Asuncion Mayoral, like Bob Houliston, was expelled from the group by Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas. Pablo Vidal was a non-elected councillor until the national rules on non-elected councillors were changed.

Working together they were responsible for bringing the street cleaning and rubbish removal service from private sector control to control by the local government. This contract, worth millions of euros, was the source of corruption in Orihuela for many years while in private hands. CLR will not be among the 13 parties contesting the elections on 24 May. Pedro Mancebo and his colleague Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas have effectively destroyed the CLR party. They have concluded that their reputation in the last 4 years has been so damaged that it would not be worthwhile trying again. Pedro Mancebo is on the list of no party. However, the owner of the now defunct CLR party has taken over the Orihuela branch of the new national Citizens Party (Ciudadanos). It will be headed by Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas and the highest positions on its list are occupied by relatives or employees of the owner, a businessman who supports the re-privatization of the multi-million euro street cleaning and rubbish removal service With the presentation of candidates’ lists, the stage is set for an election campaign beginning on 8 May which will be hard fought by a multitude of parties most of which will not reach the minimum of 5% of votes to elect a councillor. In the face of this divided and confusing situation C.L.A.R.O. is convinced that its time has come and that voters will support a party campaigning on the basic of fair, honest and efficient government for all those living in the municipality of Orihuela. CHILDREN DENIED HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BY INFLATED PRICES
APA Playas Orihuela Costa, the group who are calling for a brick built school to replace the portable cabin horror that is currently accommodating the area’s junior school children, have once more taken up arms against the Orihuela Council. This time they are challenging the government to reduce the prices of leisure activities charged in the privately managed CDM Orihuela Costa, the Municipal sports centre located in Playa Flamenca. They say that it is completely unfair that the 1500 children resident on the coast are charged far more to use their local centre than is currently the case for children who join similar clubs or use comparable facilities in Orihuela City, Torrevieja or Pilar de la Horadada. The group have made comparisons with the Palacio del Agua de Orihuela, CMD Pilar de la Horadada and the Centro Deportivo de Torrevieja. They say the disparity in charges is unacceptable and that they discriminate against everybody wishing to pursue a healthy lifestyle on the Orihuela Costa. They say that it is now almost impossible for many people to use the facilities at CDM Orihuela Costa because of the high prices and that the price difference with sports centres in the nearby towns is absolutely disgusting. Prices are such that many parents are transporting their children to Torrevieja and to Pilar de la Horadada because, even including the cost of transport and fuel 2 or 3 times a week, the cost of such facilities in
neighbouring facilities are much cheaper. Unfortunately there are many families however that don’t have the financial means, either to take their children elsewhere or to pay the local prices so they are made to suffer because they are unable to attend the same clubs or activities as their friends and school colleagues. APA Playas Orihuela Costa suggests that this could be up to 35% of all the children resident in the coastal area. These shortcomings of public infrastructure on the coast are a major deficiency in the development of local children. And they also affect many adults of course, many of whom are elderly, who pay their local taxes and who subsequently have the right themselves to enjoy a healthy lifestyle by using local sports facilities without being ‘ripped off’. Indeed by inflating the prices to levels that many people can’t afford, the management of CDM Orihuela Costa are forcing potential users elsewhere. Common sense would suggest that if they brought the prices down to more manageable levels they would, of course, attract many of them back into the local facility and in so doing they would also strengthen all of the neighbourhood activities, clubs and teams.

‘NO TORREVIEJA CAN’T Sí se Puede Torrevieja (Yes Torrevieja Can) has failed to collect the 1500 signatures required to enable it to stand as a political party in the upcoming municipal elections. Having only started the process a little over 10 days ago a spokesman said they had left it rather too late and in accordance with electoral law they will not be able to compete in the elections. He said they were only 300 signatures short of what was needed.

VISITORS FLOCK TO LA MATA NATURAL PARK Almost three-hundred people took part in activities centred around the Natural Park of the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja during the week after Easter. During the period, the participants enjoyed various activities organized by the Park Management, including the campaign "Easter in the Parks" which was arranged by the Ministry of Environment from the Generalitat Valenciana. In amongst the activities the participants were introduced to the mysteries of the Lagunas de la Mata, history dating back to the fifteenth century, by Luís de Santángel, administrator of the salt museum. There was also a gymkhana, various ornithological displays and nest box workshops. And if that were not enough, more than a hundred people attended a presentation which showed the difficulties that are so often encountered by different species of birds when they come to nest in the Natural Park. The main purpose of the events and workshops has been to increase sensitivity and awareness toward nature, environmental education for those people who might otherwise not come into contact with such activities. Organisers were keen to make visitors aware that the park engages in such activities on a regular basis, all year round, in a totally free environment where families can experience nature and the outdoors together. PSOE PROMISE A BETTER FUTURE FOR TORREVIEJA Mayoral candidate Ángel Sáez has said that he will ensure that foreign residents become an integral part of the community.
The PSOE in Torrevieja has laid out their election manifesto, making clear their commitment to foreign residents, in a way that they feel will make up for the lack of commitment shown by the current government for a large portion on municipal tax payers. Spokesperson for the group and mayoral candidate Ángel Sáez said this week how the foreign residents have never been seen as an integral part of the community of Torrevieja residents, a fact that he intends to change, if elected. For example, he says, the foreigners office “does not work”, as it is a centre which coordinates the needs of none Spanish residents, but all that currently happens is that a person will go to that office and make a genuine enquiry about a problem or issue, and will then be sent away to the relevant own hall department. Once that foreigner arrives at their destination, they are then alone to try to deal with the complex Spanish systems alone. The PSOE vow to change that process and when the foreigners office meets a person with a question, a member of the team will personally escort them to the relevant department and offer translations of the process throughout. In addition, the PSOE will appoint a councillor dedicated to international residents. Whereas a role exists at the moment, it is mostly by title only, and the councillor does not truly reflect or respond to the needs of the community, whereas under the PSOE, that post will be dedicated to deal with the problems of foreign residents. If elected, the Mayor himself vows to visit all of the surrounding areas of the municipality on a monthly bases, asking residents for problems and issues so that they can be resolved, a far cry from the current mayor, whom many of the residents outside the city
centre say they have only seen recently during the run up to the elections, and only on posters which have been placed in these areas, the first time an image of Eduardo Dolón appeared, albeit in pictorial form. The lack of police outside the city will also be addressed, with many of those same residents outside the centre commenting how they never see a police patrol and never see police cars other than in the car park of the police station. Similarly, problems of the neglect of the infrastructure will be dealt with, again as countless complaints of lack of street lights and broken fixtures have been promised to be resolved. The PSOE will dedicate time to improving relationships in the gay and lesbian communities, even promoting an international gay pride day, again contrary to the current opinion of Torrevieja being antigay, thanks to the homophobic attitude of the previous may, resulting in a considerable loss in terms of tourism from the so called pink pound. The PSOE also vow to resolve many of the historic problems which the current government are seen to be ignoring, including waste disposal, street cleaning and more, and they believe that their tenure in government will lead to a better future for Torrevieja.

AECC DONATION A great evening of fun was had by all celebrating St George's Day at Captain Morgans Bar in Eagles nest on Thursday. Amongt the entertainment were regular performers at the Bar, the well known JB Brass Band, playing their usual variety of foot tappers and popular music.
Photos Jean Heald The Orihuela Costa and District Branch of The Royal British Legion were at The Emerald Isle on Thursday 23 April to celebrate Saint Georges Day. The day started with a parade by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums leading the way. This was followed by standards of the Branch, the Royal Naval Association, the Royal Marines Association and the Royal Air Force Association. The highlight of the parade was heralded by the Chelsea Pensioners from London who came over especially for the event. All association members then marched to the Emerald Isle. Eddie Coleman the Branch Vice Chairman and organiser of the day welcomed everyone and invited The Counsellor for the coast Martina Scheurer to officially open the event. ROYAL FAMILY ATTENDING MEMORIAL MASS King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will be in Barcelona on Monday, attending a ceremonial memorial mass which will be held at the Sagrada Familia in memory of the victims of the Germanwings crash in the Alps. Members of the Spanish government and other dignitaries will also be attending the afternoon event, as funerals for the victims of the crash continue to be held. The investigation into the course of events that
led to the crash is still ongoing, but it is hoped that the service will offer some comfort to the families of those who perished.
The second purpose of the day was to raise funds for AECC . This is a cause very dear to the Band's hearts as 3 years ago they lost their then Chairman to cancer and over the past few years have had several members receiving treatment or being tested for this dreadful illness and they were delighted to donate 150€ from their fee to the charity. DOCT ORS ACQ UITTED FOR ALIC ANTE BABY THEFT A judge has ordered the provisional dismissal of an investigation into the alleged theft of a baby, which was said to have occurred in Alicante in the 1980s. In his findings the judge said that the participation of the three doctors in the events had not been proven, sources close to the investigation report. This case was filed at the request of the Chief Prosecutor, who received the complaint in 2012, following the examination of DNA taken from the bone remains of a newborn girl exhumed in Alicante cemetery. In investigating the case, the judge took statements
from the three defendants, two gynecologists in a private clinic in the city, where the complainant gave birth and the doctor who signed the death certificate. The case made the doctors the first healthcare professionals in Alicante ever involved in a criminal prosecution for the alleged theft of a baby. The prosecution itself asked the court to archive the case for lack of evidence against the accused. They said that the three defendants could not be prosecuted on the grounds that they could not be attributed to any crime based on the results of various evidence collected. In their statements the three doctors, who are all retired, said they don’t remember anything about the case. Investigations also failed to show that any of them had actually participated in the birth and in the case of pediatrician who had confirmed the death, at that time his physical presence was not actually required in such situations. The mother said that she was told her baby had been born with serious heart problems and as such she was initially moved to a hospital in Madrid where she is said to have undergone a series of tests. Finding that the condition was irreversible, the Madrid doctors stated that the baby was sent back to Alicante. As the case has only been archived and not dismissed, according to the Judicial Police, there is a possibility that it could be reopened in the future should any new evidence come to hand.

SUPERMOTO BROTHERS BACK IN ACTION
The Supermoto racing brothers from Murcia have had a busy start to their 2015 race season. It all kicked off in March at the first round of the Spanish championship at Albaida in Valencia. Last year’s season ended in a career threatening injury for Anthony Ford-Dunn when he crashed and badly broke his arm. After an operation to pin and plate the break, and the winter spent rehabilitating, Anthony decided to race in the SM road class for 2015 to allow his arm to strengthen properly before re-entering the SM open class in 2016, where the off road and jump sections are included. With the decision made to contest the road racing Supermoto class, Anthony showed that he had lost none of his skills or determination to win, and immediately set pole position, followed by two wins in both his races. He didn’t stop there, as he has also competed in the Catalan SM road championship and after 2 rounds he has 3 wins and a 2nd place to his name and a commanding championship lead. Older Brother Mat Ford-Dunn also walked away from last year’s race in Albaida with a broken collar bone, just an hour after Anthony had broken his arm. It was a bad day for the Supermotoland team, but he still had a shot at the SM master 35 championship title for 2014 and used the 6 weeks between races to heal before coming back at the final round of the championship in Alcarras, Catalunya, to fight for the championship title. The pressure was on, as Mat had not even sat on the bike in the 6 weeks since his injury
but in a determined effort he set pole position and then a dominant double race victory to make him the SM Master 35 champion of Spain for the second year running. This year has seen Mat step up to the premier SM Open class and he has wasted no time in finding the extra speed needed to be competitive. With a solid start at Albaida Mat scored 5-55 in his three races to give him 5th overall on the day and just one point short of 4th position. Mat was running as high as 3rd in one of his races but a couple of small crashes knocked him back. The Catalan championship has also seen Mat at his best with a surprising 3rd overall at the first round of the championship and after two rounds he now holds 5th position. For 2015 the Supermotoland team that is sponsored by Murcia based International removals company ‘Advance Moves’ has a new member of the team, in the form of Mats 14 year old son Loris Ford-Dunn, Loris has been learning the ropes in the Youth classes and with limited time on his bike he has started to make good progress. The Supermotoland team next race at Villena in Alicante on Sunday 3rd May for the second round of the Spanish Supermoto championship. The race action all starts at 10.00 hrs and finishes at 15.00 hrs so be sure to be there on time to see some fantastic racing. More information on the forth coming race can be found at www.supermotoland.com or the circuits website at www.chicharrakarts.es

JOBLESS FIGURES UP Spain’s economy may be showing signs of recovery but there was no corresponding improvement in unemployment in Q1 say the latest figures from the National Statistics Institute. Unemployment rose slightly, to 23.78%. Only Greece is worse. Many analysts had expected the jobs market to be more buoyant at this stage of Spain’s economic recovery, which has been boosted by falling oil prices and a weaker euro but some figures point in another direction.

HEALTHY COLT BORN AT ROJALES HORSE RESCUE CENTRE Another severely neglected mare rescued from a Granada breeding yard by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has given birth to a healthy foal. The birth on April 6 came just a week after a second mare from the same rescue operation also gave birth to a healthy colt. Visitors can meet both foals when the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre holds its free monthly open day. The next one is Sunday, May 3.
HUMAN REMAINS The human remains discovered inside a meat grinder found by police in a home in the Madrid satellite town of Majadahonda belong to a tenant who went missing a month ago. The Civil Guard on Thursday confirmed that the blood and tissues are those of Adriana G., a 55-yearold Argentinean woman who was renting out a room from the suspect. An analysis of DNA samples from the grinder matched those provided by the victim’s brother, who flew to Spain from Argentina after filing the complaint that led to the grisly discovery.
Last Wednesday 22nd April 2015 the Provincial Grand Master of Valencia Norman Wheatley presented the keys of a brand new vehicle designed to assist the homeless throughout the Province of Valencia to members of the Red Cross. The presentation took place outside the Red Cross offices situated in Guardamar del Segura. People attending the presentation included local dignitaries such as the Mayoress of Guardamar del Segura Carmen Verdú. Herrminia Palmar, Managing Director of Integration and Social Inclusion & Cooperation of Red Cross in Valencia. Alvaro Prieto, Territorial Director of Social Wellbeing within the Valencian Community. Antonio Navarro, Vice-President of Cruz Roja in Valencia. Adelaida Plaza, President of the Cruz Roja in Guardamar del Segura.
Norman Wheatley was assisted by the presence of the Deputy Provincial Grand Master of Valencia William Russell, the Assistant Grand Master of Valencia Rodney Bignell and Keith Alcock the Provincial Grand Charity Steward of Valencia. The vehicle has been designed to assist the homeless people in the Province of Valencia and is fitted with four showers and equipment to help cover the basic sanitary and social necessities of the homeless in situ. (personal hygiene, alimentation and first auxiliaries) There is no other vehicle of a similar type in the whole of Spain used by Cruz Roja and its specifications and use are completely unique. The vehicle has been financed completely by members of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Valencia. The vehicle will start helping the homeless initially in the Guardamar and Torrevieja vicinities before extending further afield.
Last Saturday, police called at the centre for assistance with a pony found wandering in Heredades. Although the pony was in very good condition, he was taken to the rescue centre while his owner arranges to get him Identichipped, as required by law. “As the pony was well cared for, we are happy to hand him back to his owner when the situation has been sorted out,” Sue said. The centre will also permanently house an adult pony found abandoned and wandering alongside the AP7 Motorway near San Javier last Saturday, April 18. Police tracked down the owner in Almaria using the pony’s Identichip and will now look to pursue a prosecution. The centre is now looking to open a second charity shop in Gran Alacant to help raise funds, adding to a network of eight shops across the Alicante province. Donations of furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to stock any of the rescue centre charity shops are gratefully welcomed. EHCRC is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Travelling Back in Time Visitors often forget that there is much more to the island of Gran Canaria than sunshine and beautiful beaches. Brits, Germans and Scandinavians flock to the Canary Islands in search of the sunshine and warmth that they have been missing during the winter months in their home countries. Desperate to squeeze in as many sunshine hours that they can, many tourists shy away from looking at the islands' ancient past, visiting traditional Canarian villages, exploring the mountain areas and learning more about the islands' ancient past. The same too can be said of many of us who live on the islands. It is often only when visitors arrive that we are reminded that our islands contain many treasures to explore, and forces us away from our daily routines. One such island treasure is the Painted Cave of Galdar (La Cueva Pintada de Galdar), which can be found to the North of Gran Canaria. Galdar was the centre of the rulers of the Guanches, the original inhabitants of Gran Canaria, before the Spanish conquest of the island. In a small cave in the town, the Guanches painted intricate geometric paintings that depicted much of the routine and rituals of their daily lives. In island aboriginal culture, painting the walls of caves was common practice and this is one of the best-preserved examples of
rock art that can be seen anywhere. Following the Spanish conquest in 1478, the Spanish invaders built a new city and the original Guanche settlement disappeared and the painted cave was lost. In 1873, a local man clambered through a narrow gap in the rocks and discovered the cave and the paintings. Word quickly got around and soon many people were visiting the cave where mummified bodies, Guanche pottery and tools were also found. The cave was finally opened to the public about one hundred years later, but this led to an increase in sunlight and humidity, which caused the paintings to deteriorate. In 1982 the island government closed all public access to the caves until a way to preserve this valuable heritage could be found. Many years later, the Ceuva Pintada was once again opened to the public, together with a modern visitor centre that provides helpful background information about the life of the Guanches. Visitors are now able to explore this fascinating Canarian aboriginal village, which is an amazing testimony to an ancient and ancestral civilisation. The Guanches lived in cave houses, and used Stone Age tools to cut and shape the rooms from the soft volcanic rock. They built walls from basalt without the use of mortar, and carved beds and seats from the soft rock. This early human settlement has now been professionally excavated and the entire site is covered to protect the excavations, as well as controlling light and humidity that can cause so much damage.
The Painted Cave of Galdar Visitors can visit the Cueva Pintada, which is recognised as one of the most important archaeological sites in the Canary Islands, and tours are given in several languages. So, if you plan to visit the island, and get tired of the sun and lazing by the pool, just head off to Galdar and invest in a trip through the past. You won't regret it. ORIHUELA TOWN HALL HELPS RESIDENTS WITH DRIVING LECTURE
Members from the N332 road safety Project were invited by the Orihuela Councillor for International Residents, Martina Scheurer, to give a presentation at the Orihuela Costa town hall this week, where residents from various nationalities attended to learn more about driving in Spain. Split into two sessions, the first part in English and the second part translated into German by the International Residents Office head, Heike Schug, with website manager Mark Nolan introducing the idea behind the N332 project and the creation first of the Facebook page by members of the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja, and the subsequent creation of the website by a separate group of professionals to catalogue the information in order to make it easier to find. Francisco Morales, a serving traffic police officer from Torrevieja, who is in charge of coordinating the team from the Guardia Civil, then took the participants through many of the more common questions that have arisen through both Facebook and the website, everything
from driving license renewal, documents you must carry in the car, mobility scooters and microcars, cycles, overtaking and more, including how to spot an unmarked police car. It is the first time a town hall has taken the initiative to invite the group to give a presentation, which was kept brief with the promise of returning to offer more in-depth presentations on key aspects about driving after the summer period, focusing on many more of the specific questions raised. The group can be contacted via the Facebook page, and the website, as well as the International Residents Office offering to forward enquiries on your behalf, should you not have access to Facebook. Although, as the team explained, it is not always possible to respond to individual enquiries, those most frequent questions will form the basis of articles published via the internet and other mediums, to ensure that you questions do get answered in some way.

Pegasus to Focus on Dangerous Roads The DGT has announced that the helicopters equipped with the Pegasus radar equipment will be focussing their attention on roads with high accident rates in the next few months The announcement was made during a working meeting held in A CoruĂąa attended by the chief of the helicopter unig, JesĂşs Guardia, in which all heads of the seven helicopter bases attended, along with pilots and observers from the operational units. During the meeting Guardia said that various matters were discussed, such as monitoring traffic coordination with management centres and ground patrols of the Guardia Civil, and how the focus from the director general of traffic, Maria Segui, was to monitor areas with a known high accident rate. These areas are located in almost all cases on conventional roads, with traffic flowing in both directions and without any kind of separation, where the majority of fatal crashes occur, accounting for around 90% of the total number of casualties. The Pegasus airborne radar speed detectors can operate from a distance as far as 1,000 feet in the air, or 300 metres, and are able to pinpoint speeding vehicles up to a kilometre away, travelling at speeds of up to 360 kilometres per hour. FABRA PROMISES TO ABOLISH INHERITANCE TAX As the economic forecast continues to improve, the president of the Generalitat, Alberto Fabra, pledged that when re elected he will continue to reduce taxes in an effort to provide additional support to large families and to eliminate bureaucratic obstacles that are regularly put in the way of both the public and the local business community. Fabra said that he would abolish inheritance tax for family heirlooms that are less than 350,000 euros
RISK TO GRAN CANARIA Fuel oil, possibly from a fishing vessel that sank off the Canary Islands in mid-April, has reached the west coast of Gran Canaria. The first stains were detected on Wednesday night on Veneguera beach, a popular tourist destination, and some also turned up in a cove located within the Gran Canaria Biosphere Reserve. The Spanish government has raised the emergency level, in acknowledgment of the damage risk to the coastline.
PUBLIC WORKERS Spain’s ambassador in London Federico Trillo and Popular Party (PP) deputy Vicente Martínez Pujalte received more than €429,000 in consulting fees from a private construction firm specializing in public works while they were serving in Congress, tax inspectors have discovered. In separate statements, both Trillo and Pujalte acknowledged that they received money from Collosa for consulting work, but at the same time accused the Tax Agency and the anti-corruption division of leaking taxpayers’ information, which under law should remain confidential.
RAJOY’S TAXING AMNESTY Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Wednesday addressed Congress to defend his government’s 2012 tax amnesty and his party’s refusal to publicize the names of the people who applied for it. Rajoy told Socialist leader Pedro Sánchez that the €124 billion that the state collected through the procedure justifies the move. He also compared it with earlier tax amnesties offered by Socialist governments.
He will also abolish inheritance tax for family heirlooms that are less than 350,000 euros. Proposals for the reduction in tax are aimed at people who earn less than 35,000 euros gross per year, which will mean "a direct tax reduction for 85% of Valencian workers. The reduction will range between 8% and 13%. He made the announcement at a ceremony held at the Hotel Astoria in Valencia last week, although many of the initiatives were explained in detail by the Head of the Economic Bureau of Moncloa, Álvaro Nadal. During his speech Fabra repeated his commitment to lower taxes on at least half a dozen occasions. He also announced further help to those who assist the disabled as well as a reduction in the water treatment levy for large families.
BILLIONS DISCOVERED IN OVERSEAS TAX DECLARATIONS The Spanish tax agency has uncovered billions in undeclared assets being held in various off-shore locations. The director of the Hacienda, Santiago Santiago Menéndez, said this Menéndez week that 20 billion euro has been located in Switzerland, another 4 billion in Andorra and 260 million in Gibraltar. The findings have come about as part of the new obligations to declare overseas assets worth over 50,000 euro, under a scheme called Modelo 720. This year alone, more than 27,500 taxpayers have provided obligatory information about 14.3 billion held abroad. Since the mandatory declaration came into force in 2013, more than 197,000 taxpayers have declare 124.5 billion euro worth of foreign assets in 200 countries, according to Menéndez. Menéndez insisted that the “valuable information” collated from Modelo 720 has enabled more performances and increased the number of tax contributions as a result. A tax amnesty was introduced in 2012 in order to ensure compliance with the rule, which Menéndez says resulted in “very valuable information” and “helped design new verification techniques”, although facing criticism, the director made clear that the tax amnesty exonerated the tax offence, but not the possible appreciation of other crimes. On Tuesday, Menéndez told Congress that the number of individuals being investigated for money laundering after they applied for the 2012 amnesty has increased to 715 from the original 705 that were reported. However, Menéndez refused to answer questions on individual cases, including those of high profile politicians such as the recent case involving Rodrigo Rato, a former senior official with the ruling Partido Popular and ex-IMF chief, suspected of having committed offenses of tax fraud, asset stripping and money laundering.

DEADLINE TO PRODUCE BANK ID EXPIRES THIS WEEK All banks should by now have been in touch with their clients, either by email, text or through a notice placed on internet banking accounts, the purpose of the notice being that accounts may be blocked if proof of identification is not provided by 30 April. In accordance with Spanish legislation the banks are required to collect and digitalize up-to-date identification documents for all account holders. For Spaniards, this means the DNI national identity card; for foreign residents, you are required to produce either your residency card or passport. Whilst, in the majority of cased the residency card or passport will be enough, some customers may also be required to provide additional information regarding their economic activities, said to be part of new requirements to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism. The obligation to keep digital records of clients’ personal data was first introduced in 2010, but the law gave lenders a five-year deadline to complete the task. That deadline expires this coming Thursday so be warned as accounts that do not meet the requirements will be blocked on 1 May. There will be some clients who have not yet been contacted by their bank and can assume that no further action is necessary as their ID is already in the bank’s possession, but it might be worth checking
as the sudden withdrawal of your funds could have a catastrophic effect. However, when the client produces their ID, the account will be re activated again, but after three months, if the account is still blocked it will be transferred to a different category known as “cuentas de orden;” Recovering one’s money at that point could be more complicated and require additional paperwork. It may be prudent, therefore, if you have friends back in UK who may not be aware of the possible embargo on their accounts, to give them a call and advise them to get in touch with their bank. It could save them an awful lot of inconvenience in the future.

FAMILY E-TYPE COMES OUT OF HIDING AFTER 25 YEARS An incredibly original 1973 Jaguar E-Type Series III V12 Manual Roadster, hidden away for more than 25 years, is set to see the light of day once again when it goes under the hammer in Silverstone Auctions’ May Sale. The one family owned car was purchased new by the current owner’s grandfather and registered on the 15th of August 1973. Yet the car was rarely used and spent much of its early life in a garage at the family home in Warwickshire.
In April 1993 ownership passed onto the son of the first owner yet still remained unused in the same garage. The E-Type was however properly immobilised and oil put into the cylinders. The car was given a full service in October 2006 and once again placed into storage. It was passed onto the current owner when his father died in September 2014. The dust covered car will now receive a careful recomissioning at classic car specialists Tolman Motorsports before heading to Silverstone circuit for the auction on May 23rd, with an estimate of between £75,000 and £90,000. Commenting on the car’s amazing history, managing director of Silverstone Auctions, Nick Whale said: “It’s a pleasure to be able to offer this highly original, low mileage E-Type for auction and help find it a loving home with a new owner.” Having been used so little the car has covered just over 7,700 miles from new and remains essentially as delivered from the Coventry factory. All the interior is completely original as is the soft top. The original spare tyre and tool kit is still with the car and it even comes with the last tax disc from 31/10/90. Nick added, “In my opinion the Series III E-Type is one of the best value classic cars on offer. The market has now recognised these wonderful cars and as such we expect a great amount of interest in this fantastically original, low mileage example.” For more information on the car and Silverstone Auctions’ May Sale please visit https://www.silverstoneauctions.com/1973-jaguar-e-typeseries-iii-v12-roadster-5282.

According to new research by leading auto-manufacturer Nissan, one in three people in Europe* have experienced a parking incident in the last five years. The research, conducted by global research agency YouGov, surveyed 9,177 drivers across the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain to identify the causes and effects of parking prangs, found that more than three out of ten drivers (33%) reported damaging their car in the last five years with 16% of those suffering car damage while in the act of parking. Italy's drivers were the most accident-prone with one in two admitting to damaging their cars over the same period - 26% of them doing so while attempting a parking manoeuvre. Conversely, British drivers were the most cautious, with just 10% reporting a parkingrelated incident. In four out of five of the Nations surveyed, reversing proved the most challenging manoeuvre, with the tricky task accounting for 45% of all parking bumps; in Italy a staggering 51% of bumps were caused while in reverse. Drivers of Estate cars should also take heed as parking incidents were highest in this popular class (27%). Spanish drivers narrowly avoided being named the most accident-prone in Europe, coming in a close second behind Italy with one quarter of the country's car accidents having taken place while parking. Germany and France both proved more proficient parkers with parking bumps accounting for 11% and 10% of accidents respectively. To assist unsuspecting motorists and demonstrate how vehicle technology can be a welcomed driver aide, Nissan transformed a car park in Rome to demonstrate the benefits of its Around View Monitor (AVM) and Moving Object Detection technology from its awardwinning Pulsar compact hatchback.
Designed to assist with parking, the intelligent Nissan Around View Monitor system gives the driver a virtual bird's-eye view of their vehicle as they manoeuvre into a space providing a ‘safety net' for drivers. To see how the motorists got on with the technology and some of their extraordinary reactions, watch: http://youtu.be/o6trVdriZcM "Parking is a part of driving not everyone feels comfortable with so we wanted to do everything we could to assist drivers," said Bastien Schupp, Vice President of Marketing for Nissan Europe. "By taking this technology out of the Pulsar and installing it in a car park in Italy we have given drivers the opportunity to see for themselves how Around View Monitor can take the stress out
of parking and help them park with confidence - while also helping to avoid damage to their car." Combining bold design, technical innovations and interior space, the new Pulsar brings a new dimension to the compact hatchback market, offering all the familiar Nissan qualities in a stylish new package. NEW ORIHUELA OFFICE FOR CAMBIEMOS Cambiemos Orihuela published its manifesto last week whilst at the same time opening a new Party HQ, just along from the Town Hall, on Calle Santa Justa, Orihuela, and just this morning, Monday 27 April, the Party presented to the public its candidates for the forthcoming Municipal Elections. Since the formation of Cambiemos Orihuela, a merger of the United Left and the Greens on 21 January, the manifesto has been developed in on-going commissions and assemblies. It defines the party’s political commitment to the people of Orihuela and is an evolving document which recognizes the needs and conditions of the city, which includes public involvement. While this is the framework for the much broader program, “the documents, as Ester Romero, number four on the list of candidates and representative from the coast, stated, “are the result of a participatory democracy. It has never been our intention to produce a rigid, unrealistic program behind closed doors without acknowledging and including ideas and proposals from members of the public. ‘A SET JETTERS GUIDE TO SPAIN: 101 Locations’ is a guide to where 101 of the most important English language films were made in Spain. The book, written in accessible English, covers all of Spain, but was written in Valencia by Bob Yareham who has taught and written in Valencia since 1981. More than 700 English language films have been entirely or partly made in Spain, the non-native English c o u n t r y where most English language films have been made. Set-jetting (cinema tourism) is already very popular in countries like the USA, the UK and New Zealand (where Lord of the Rings was made), and the book aims to promote and ferment this new kind of tourism, for which Spain has such great potential. Cinema tourism (set-jetting) is an undeniable fact; you only need to ask the delighted authorities of New Zealand, where they are still reaping the benefits of visitors attracted by the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Spain has it all; the deserts, the beaches, the forests, mountains, lakes and rivers, and of course that

Many of today’s popular tourist resorts owe their initial prosperity to film makers, who hired entire populations, as well as the more than willing, disciplined Spanish army and police force to produce their epics about Romans, medieval knights or American GIs. In this guide there are 101 films and their locations, (the title is of course a nudge and a wink to the Disney classic about the spotted dogs), and it is hoped that readers will visit these places and share the knowledge that Spain is a lot more than sun, sand and sangria; although that’s all pretty good stuff too. The book is dedicated to the memory of John Cabrera, w h o according to Bob Yareham, did more for the Spanish film industry than they will ever realise.

VALENCIA DESERTS PP Voters in the Valencia region, a bastion of conservatism for two decades, are likely to desert Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy's party in droves in May's regional election, a poll published on Sunday found, in a taste of nationwide politics to come. The Metroscopia poll showed Rajoy's centre-right People's Party (PP) would win the Valencia vote but halve its seats to 28 from 55 in 2011, leaving it short of a majority and unlikely to get sufficient backing from rivals to govern again.

The competition authority said Telefonica had also agreed to offer access to its high-speed internet network to competitors so that they can provide TV content to their subscribers and to make it possible for clients to cut their contract more easily.

SAMM OPEN DAY – BALATON GROUP TRAIL SAILS With the conditions on the SAMM Open Day on April 9th not conducive to sailing, the improvement in the weather, at last, allowed the Balaton Group to take the opportunity to offer the first of the trial sails, to some of the 17 potential new members who had expressed an interest. on April 16th and 17th, in lovely sunny and warm conditions with perfect winds on the Mar Menor, two of the Groups experienced skippers and their crew each provided a morning or afternoon sail of approximately 2 hours duration on one of their three 6 meter day sailers to a mix of novices and people with previous sailing experience. These were a great success with 6 of the 10 people immediately requesting to join the Group. The other 7 people, some of whom have left Spain for a while, will be given their trial sails as soon as they can be arranged. PERFECT RACING WEATHER Eleven boats turned out for the third race day in the SAMM Spring Series, the highest number so far this season, including new member Robert James in his Bosun which is a very old class. The weather was perfect, warm, and sunny with 5 – 7 knot NW winds
The other two team members Vicky Pigneur and Amy Connolly were challenged with improving upon previous best times in their 200m Individual Medley races. Vicky was close to her PB but it was Amy who managed to improved upon her previous time by 19 seconds. This coming weekend it is the turn of the older swimmers in their two day timed control event in the Municipal Pool, Petrer, followed by the Clubs Masters on the 10th May. For more information regarding Torrevieja Swimming Club please contact Rosa 665 454 126, President Felipe on 609 418 776 or Vicki 669 637 015 or by email on info@clubnataciontorrevieja.com
and new race officer Grahame Gannon, on his first day in the job got everybody away for the morning race promptly at 11.40am. The race was being very closely fought when, at the end of lap two, disaster stuck when a marker buoy became adrift forcing the race to be abandoned. Most boats got off to a good start in the afternoon race which was again very hard fought in stronger 10-12 knot winds from ESE. The two Sailfish 18’s were in close, often worryingly close, contact for almost all the race as were the two Laser 2000’s. Eventually, in such very close racing that only,56 seconds separated the first 5 boats, the Catamaran ‘Hamour’ (John Clarke, John Parker, Graham Lewis) triumphed, with the Faversham 14 (Dave Belcher, Kevin Powell) second and Shoestring Tres (Brian Murray, Vernon O’Byrne) third. EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Whilst last week was a break from the league, we had quite a busy week. Having 2 touring team matches, always great fun and the Champion of Champions competition, where although we didn't produce great results, we did put up some good battles. But some of us did this week have a great morning fun in the chicken run on Thursday and Friday brought the return of the Harrier League with a home match against San Luis Hercules. Though we might have expected to take more than 2 rinks, we did have a good match in good company. Jim Gracie, Merv Armstrong and Don Darby 25-11. HORADADA BOWLS CLUB

VCL SOUTH 22ND APRIL 2015 and SABA 24TH APRIL 2015 On Wednesday 22nd, the first game of the VCL didn't go well for Horadada, losing all games to Greenlands Mimosa. The only good news being, the rain that was due never came. Results for the day were: Greenlands Mimosa 12 points and 110 shots Horadada having no points and 54 shots. So all points going to the visiting team, Greenlands Mimosa. A strong team for sure. Friday 24th April, playing our 2nd SABA game, Horadada Hawks had a much better result, playing host to Country Bowls Badgers. Winning on 4 rinks, and narrowly missing out on one more. Our winning rinks were ;- Peter Davis, Fred Trigwell and Roy Thompson 20
- 18. Alan Russell, Tony Burchall and John Bailey 32 - 8. Alf Woodhouse, Bryan Eatough and Terry Hucknall 24 - 9. Yvonne Hurlock, Roy Collins and John Hurlock 22 - 13. The final score being; Hawks 10 points and 121 shots. Badgers 4 points and 97 shots. Well done Horadada Hawks, for a fantastic day’s play. Keep the momentum going. Let’s also try and get these results next Wednesday, when we again play at home, this time to Emerald Isle Barons in our 2nd game of the VCL. HORADADA welcomes new players to the Club. For some of our bowlers it was their first venture into the C of C and all of our entrants managed to progress into the quarter finals, so well done to them. The Hornets came out on top winning three rinks to the Badgers two, with one drawn rink. Picking up the points for the Badgers were Carole Donnellan, Sheila Whitehall and Peter Whitehall 38-13. Pat Patton, Ben Noke and Brian Patton 20-15. Doreen Statham. Andy White and Bryan Kirk 19-19. Overall shots Badgers 105 (5 pts) Hornets 120 (9 pts). For their first game in the VCL the Herons travelled to Quesada on Wednesday, 22 April to take on the Tigers. Overall shots Herons 64 (2 pts) Tigers 105 (10 pts). Final game of the week and another away fixture for the Badgers on Friday, 24 April in the SABA Harrier league, this time at Horadada Hawks. For the Magpies Stewart & Jane maximised with 3 wins and those thoroughbreds, Martin and John failed to score while best for the Ospreys were Ann & Alan with 2 wins. Moving up into 2nd place are Brian’s Jaguars who had a fine win against Ayliff’s Da Vinci’s whose best were Captain Ayliff with John on 2 wins while for the Jaguars Sheila and Basil topped with 3 wins. In 4th spot and just missing out on the prizes are Ron’s Nacho’s Voles who lost out to Alan’s low flying Robins thanks to Alan & Joe with 3 wins for the Robins while Norman & Ken zeroed for the Voles. It was Doom & Gloom for Peter’s Galleon who were stunned by Paul’s Catorce with the night’s highest win having 2 players on 3 wins while Bruce & Harry blobbed for The Galleon. In the wilderness of Lo Crispin, John’s Taverners fell foul to Steve’s Steakhouse who had the improving pair of Les & Brian with 3 wins leaving all 3 Lo Crispin pairs with only 1 win each. While in the Ambience of Izzy’s Bar Mike’s Peacocks ended their good run against my Falcons who were flying high with our 2nd successive win with 2 pairs on 2 wins each while sadly lacking for the Peacocks were Brian & Jean C with their zero score. K.O. Hanicap Plate at Busters. Pint Depot Kings 0-7 Porterhouse Two different cup finals this week but a familiar name on the K.O.Cup Meerkats. The team from the Hub made it seven out of seven when defeating Simon Williams Hyenas, also a Hub side, 7-3 at the Porterhouse venue. Nick Spicer was outstanding for the Hyenas, amassing 5x100,2x125,1x113,1x140 in a fine display of arrows. Unfortunately for Spicer, only Lee Holtham came anywhere near supporting the cuddly one. His efforts of 2x100,2x140, significant but insufficient as strangely Williams selections left several in form players on the sidelines. Del Kingsbury players not as explosive as Spicer nevertheless put in a solid performance with the same 3 players featuring in the final 4 legs, Pat Abrams, Alex Nikolov and Paul Durrant, it proved decisive for Kingsbury who celebrated his seventh cup victory. At the Playa Flamenca venue of Busters, the alternative cup final the Handicap Plate was contested by the Porterhouse and Pint Depot Kings, who have struggled for victories this term, with the exception of the Plate competition. Their opponents the Porters had little trouble this season, finding form, 16 matches unbeaten and their highest league position to date of 3rd. It turned out a one sided affair, disappointing from the Kings point of view considering they have several players who are no slouches, Matt Cummins, Gary Minor, Martin Bynorth and Dave Wright, just to name four. These boys do like a drink however and this week they spent most of the week in Alicante on Matts stag do, hence a below par performance. Fancy organising a wedding during the darts season! Highlight of the match was the two maximums in the same leg by Porters Sid Cross and Peter Ayres, not bad for two old timers. Back to the record breaking cup run of the Meerkats. A D10 from Pat Abrams in the first gave the Kats an early lead, Spicer the only ton scorer in both sides. Spicer repeated his earlier ton in the second, only for Abrams to hit 121 and 140, with Nikolov completing the 701 points on D19 for 2-0.The Bulgarian added a further ton in the third which nudged Spicer into second gear with 100,140 to set up a nice 68 out from the current form man Joe Miller ( S20,S16,D16 ). 2-1 to the Kats, a score to be repeated in the next 3 triples after a total personnel change. Cyril Harrison levelled the overall score on D11, John Eyre
100 and Lee Holtham 140 supporting. The Hyenas should have taken the fifth after 2x100 from Holtham and one from Eyre, but it was Maiden to take the leg on D6 after a ton himself. Another ton from Maiden, but the finishing double from captain Del Kingsbury on D10 made it 4-2 to the Kats. Paul Durrant made it 5 for the Kats on D16 after a 100 and 140 from Abrams. 3 tons from Kats Nikolov and Durrant were countered by a ton from Holtham and a 125 and 113 from Spicer, allowing Holtham to finish the leg on D2, 5-3. A further ton from Spicer in the ninth, was outshone by Abrams 100 and 140 and Durrants 2x140 with Abrams setting up Nikolov for a S9,D16 out and victory. A splendid performance from both outfits, played in a tense but sporting atmosphere. Not much prolific scoring in the K.O. Plate final, but two 180's in the second leg after Peter Ayres had got the Porters off to a flyer with a ton and D16 to take the first, really livened up the game at Busters. Ayres concluded the second leg on D10 with Sid Cross D16 making it 3, the Pint Depot Kings yet to get on the scoreboard, Gary Minor hitting 98, Matt Cummins a ton. Brian Nash made it 4-0 after a fine 94 out ( T18,D20 ), Debbie Metcalfe D16 made it 5, Nash ending the second set of triples on D4 plus a ton for a 6-0 scoreline. Yvonne Rouffignac contributing a 98 and 101. Captain Ray Sanderson included himself and wife Sue in the seventh, plus everyones favourite bloke Peter Ayres. It was in fact Ayres who did most of what was to be the last leg of the final, hitting 2x100 and a nice 56 out ( S16,D20 ) for the victory and handsome Plate. Dave Wright was the Kings only other ton scorer with 120. Whilst a one sided scoreline it was yet again another victory for the Euronics darts as both teams and Handicap Plate Winner s u p p o r t ers Porterhouse enjoyed a great evening. We have a great line up for the semi finals this Thursday 30th April at the Celler venue ( formerly Decades ). In all categories its difficult to call an eventual winner, although Pat Abrams must be favorite to retain his singles title he won in style against John Walker last season. The Meerkat also figures in a strong triple that includes Lee Maiden and Paul Durrant. Hoping to take Abrams singles title will be fellow Meerkats Alex Nikolov and Del Kingsbury, but the formidable Hyenas cuddly duo of Nick Spicer and John Eyre are well capable of

taking the title as is the explosive Mark Filer representing Busters. Outsiders, but not to be underestimated, are Kelvin Angel and John Lane who may well cause a surprise or two. Spicer and Eyre also figure in the pairs and will just start favourites over Paul Dowington and Peter O'Rourke the consistant Busters pairing. The event is expected to be a three cornered "round robin " affair as Mike Smith is unable to partner Del Lister, leaving Brett Badlove and Stuart Clarke an excellent opportunity of making the final. In the Alex Nikolov Building Services sponsored ladies sing l e s Junction Jaguars Pat Scholfield has been the most consistant this season figuring well in the Leader Merit Table Ray Sanderson (Porters) and and starts slight favourite Ian Sleath (Pint Depot Kings) over team mate Simone De Lacy, herself current Merit Table holder who can really find the lipstick when necessary. Leah Chesworth and Sonja Cooper from Sporting Life offer the challenge to the Jaguars, both former finalists and very capable of taking the title themselves. All in all great expectations that will culminate in the following weeks final and presentation once again at the Celler. All players should note, registration will open at 7-00pm and conclude at 745pm, irrespective of individual event start times, A practise board will be available on both evenings. Once again participating bars have been generous in supplying numerous raffle prizes for both evenings as have Euronics and Treasure Chest ( Villa Martin ), who traditionally support our finals and presentation.

PADDY’S POINT GS ANNUAL AWARDS (PT2) After all of the excitement of the presentation of Captain's Day prizes it was time for the annual awards. Proceedings started with President Rory Lee and Secretary Hazel Connor taking to the stage for their speeches. Rory thanked the membership for their continued support over the last year and for their excellent behaviour on the golf courses. Hazel gave a very warming and passionate speech saying how much she enjoys the contact she has with the membership and the friendships she has made, admitting that she still knows nothing about golf (in fact not true she does know the meaning of NTP). Hazel then produced the famous gold envelope and in the style of the Oscars read the nominations for most improved golfer. Janet Bryan was announced as the winner much to the delight of the female membership present. The next presentation from Hazel was to Sean McCarthy in recognition of his hole in one at Alenda in November, Sean was presented with a framed certificate. President, Rory, then announced the winner of the "President's Trophy" which is for the order of merit winner. This is decided over 11 events during the year with the best 8 scores counting. The top 3 were close with only 3 points separating them, but with an excellent end to the year the winner was Terry Fitzgerald. The President then thanked Chairman John Bryan and Vice Chairman Mick Ruttledge for their work in setting up Paddy's Point Golf Society six years ago and their hard work since. Last year was their final year in the posts and in recognition of their service both were presented with honorary life memberships of the society. Life will seem a lot quieter without them! The Chairman then announced his "Clubman of the Year" award to a shocked Mick Ruttledge and thanked him for his many years of hard work. Captain, Ian Comaskey, then returned to the stage to reveal his choice for "Golfer of the Year". The award went to someone who had helped Ian a lot in his year as captain and also in years gone by intro-
ducing him to "etiquette" , he didn't do too badly in the order of merit either! A very popular choice the award went to a very surprised John Bryan. John then made a short speech (unusual for him) thanking everyone for their support over the year, especially the hard working committee. With the presentations complete members and guests returned to Paddy's Point for continued partying through the night. Another great Captain's Day/Night over, can't wait for next year's hangover! Next event; Wednesday 13th May - La Serena for the new captain's drive in Memberships are now due, the new golfing year starts on 1st May. Membership is €10 , you may get fined for late payment so go and see staff at Paddy's Point and pay before the next event Photo: Captain Ian Comaskey presents John Bryan with the golfer of the year trophy.
OPTIMA OPTICA TROPHY - LA MARINA G S Bonalba was the host for the annual Texas Scramble competition for the trophy kindly sponsored by Optica Optima, La Marina. The sun made a welcome guest appearance and the recent winds were absent until the sky clouded over, thunder rumbled and lightening threatened towards the end of the afternoon. The course has responded well to the TLC that has been lavished on it in the last few months and the resultant lush green fairways and well covered greens were a welcome sight after the bare, tight lies of the last few months. The draw was made and the teams set out to do battle with one another after much jovial banter. Most teams beat the weather to the clubhouse but those that didn’t got very wet in just a few minutes. Everyone returned to the La Marina Sports Centre for the prize giving and buffet which was supplied, as usual, by Paulo and Helena. The results of the nearest the pins were Hole 8, Graham Marriner and Hole 11 Barry Martin. There were
no winners on this occasion on Holes 4 and 14. The triumphant four ball to win the trophy was comprised of Roger Honey, Martin Reidy, Barry Thorogood and Pete Wootton who won on C/B. A closely fought contest and commiserations to the r-up. Our next games is at Altorreal on April 30th. First tee time 11.00a.m. An entry sheet is on the notice board in the Social Centre or you can call our Secretary, Alan Craig on 634 347788. A reminder for your diaries. Our next social function is an Auction to be held at the Sports Centre on April 28th, followed by a meal and disco. Contact Elspeth Craig for further information.

BULL FLANAGAN GOLF SOCIETY
For their April meeting 26 society members travelled to the popular and well kept course at Alenda and all players got a big surprise due to many changes being made at the course. Many new bunkers had been installed, trees were being planted and the 9th green was being remodelled. As usual the course was in excellent playing condition and the weather was commensurate to ensuring a good days golf was going to be experienced. After the match all players returned to the Bull Flanagan in Quesada for the prize winner’s presentation where members and guests were able take the opportunity to sample a refreshing drink before having a choice of a free lunch. Only five players managed to get a score greater than 30 points leaving the chasing pack behind on 28 or less and todays winner was the Bill Peters scoring a creditable 36 points. Second and third places went to Keith Smith and Chris Smith scoring 34 and 31 points respectively. Nearest the pin winners on the par three holes were Keith Smith on hole 3, Preston Ives on hole 5, Dave Smith on hole 13 and Terry Sharley on hole 15. Barrie Hopkinson and Anne Stoneham won the football cards and winner of the 28ers draw was Alan Gerenscer. The Captain Mick McGrath assisted the Secretary with the presentation ceremony and made comment on the success of the days event and how well it had been supported and he also thanked Chris and his staff and asked members to show their appreciation in the usual manner for their continued support and excellent service and quality of meals available on match days. The Secretary reflected on another successful society day’s golf and thanked everyone for their attendance and concluded reminding members that the May match would be one week later due to hollow tinning and would be at Alicante.
EL RASO GOLF SOCIETY AT LA MARQUESA On Fri 24th April 24 members and three guests turned at at our home course La Marquesa for our monthly game. The weather was kind and the course was in good condition although the greens were slow.We had three guests playing today and one of them, Malcolm Kinzett turned in a creditable 30 points winning the best guest prize. Nearest the pins were: Hole 5 Alan Venables, Hole 11 Norman Woods and Hole 17 another guest John Purvis. No-one managed to get onto the difficult par 3 15th hole in one. The best front was won by Malcolm Foskett with 19 points whilst the best back went to Beverley Fairhurst also with 19 points after a last hole countback with Phyllis Venables on the same score. Third today with 33 points was Jan Shorley, whilst Joe Curran managed 34 points to come second. The winner however was Marily Eckersall with a very good 36 points. After the game we retired to the olde 9th for prizegiving drinks and a
repast. Our next game is at Roda on 29th May; guests will be made welcome.

CLUB DE GOLF EL PARAISO VISITS EL PLANTIO It’s been some time since we visited this delightful course set just outside of Alicante, it hasn’t been in the best of health in recent years, so we were pleasantly surprised at what we found. It has undergone some changes, new bunker and there and also new trees and plantations, but the real improvement was found in the fairways and greens, all it needed to be perfect was a bit of a haircut, maybe it was because we played on Sunday and the greens staff don’t work at the weekend. Anyway, our members enjoyed it, because most of them had 30 points or more, with just short of 20 entrants we had just one division but awarded prizes to the top 4 places. With several players on 33 points, 4th place went to Lyn McCormack on lower handicap, 3rd place went
to Finnish member, Kari Huopalahti also on 33 points, 2nd place went to our President Arne Hansson and that’s after he complained that someone had played his ball on the 17th and had to go back to the tee for his 3rd shot (still managed to score a point!!) however the winner was the only player to break par and that honour went to Alex Goslan with 37 points. Our nearest the pin winners this week all took home a very nice bottle of Marques de Caceres, they were; Hole 7, Tove Roed, Hole 9 Alex Goslan, Holes 14 && 18 were taken by Gunnel Thunstrom, she could be looking for someone to help her drink them before she goes back to Sweden next week! As usual we removed all of the winner’s cards and drew 3 names for a sleeve of Srixon golf balls; they were Kjell, Johanna and Lars. Photo; The Lucky Winners. Our next competition is at Real Club de Golf Campoamor on the 10th May. This is a “federated” competition, so you must be a member of the Spanish golf Federation to enter, all Federated players are welcome to join us and it’s worth remembering that you must play in 4 “federated” competitions a year to maintain your handicap. Club de Golf El Paraiso are actively recruiting new members, there are many advantages of becoming a member, apart from our fortnightly competitions, our members don’t need to use a green fee agent! All they need to do is to show the caddymaster their “El Paraiso” membership card to obtain generous discounts on most courses on the Costa Blanca
TMGS AT REAL CLUB DE GOLF CAMPOAMOR After a little rainfall over night and dark clouds still over the golf course when we arrived for this week’s Stableford competition, one might have thought that it was going to be another one of those Wednesdays! Well, it turned out to be a bright and almost windless day and with the golf course in pristine condition, just perfect to play this tricky course, with its sloping fairways and difficult to read greens. Having 5 par 3’s there were more than average chances to win a bottle of rioja for the “nearest the pins” the lucky players were; Hole 4 K. Aasebo, Hole 6 John Trehy, Hole 10 Joe Dean, Hole15 Roger Nilsen and Hole 17 Joe Dean. As last week’s “2’s” pot at las Ramblas was taken, there was just €22 in this week’s pot and the only player to take it was Joe Dean, with birdies on both holes 10 and 17. There were just 5 guests this week and the best score came from Irishman, Pat O’Brian with a respectable 29 points. In the silver category , last weeks battle between Sandra Twentyman and Roger Nilsen continued and again Roger taken advantage of having a lower handicap with both players returning 31 points, a good 5 points better, in 2nd place, was Per Skarnes on par with 36 points, but he was just piped at the post with 37 points ,by our Austrian bandit, Olga Haubner, who in recent weeks has been riding solo due to her partner in crime, Irishman Robbie Ray still unable to play, everyone is looking forward to seeing you soon Robbie! The lower handicappers in the Gold category found the scoring a little more difficult and with a number of players on 33 points, Joe Dean having the lowest handicap took 4th place, 3rd place went to that “Nasty Marshal” from Las Ramblas, Arne Hansson with 34 points, but

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY Mike Chapman We started the week with a Change Partners where each player accompanies one of the other team members over 6 holes with the best score of the pair counting towards the teams total. One team finished well clear of the others with 85 pts winning by no less than 7 pts. Tom Hardie was the main contributor with an excellent 36 pts in 14 holes ably assisted by Ulrika Barth, Doug Wright and one of our popular exmembers Peter Jenkinson. On Wednesday we started our usual weekly stableford competition under threatening skies. As a result of the weather conditions a few members decided not to play so there were only sufficient members to have one category with prizes being on offer to the first four positions. Thankfully the clouds soon cleared which enabled us to complete a full 18 holes and three players came in with an excellent 38 pts and had to be separated on a count back. The result was as follows: 1st Lindsay Forbes 38 pts (c/b) 2nd Lee Holtham 38 pts (c/b) 3rd Tom Hardie 38 pts 4th Barry Holtham 34 pts 2's Club: Lindsay Forbes (x2) and Peter Dunn On Friday we played a best 2 from 4 with all scores counting on the Par 3's. The winners who scored an incredible record breaking 15 pts on the Par 3 tenth hole were the team of Geoff Biggerstaff, Olga Douglas, John Collins and Marleen Billen
CAFE UNO GOLF SOCIETY. Steve Lawrence. Thursday 23rd April, 23 members and guests of Cafe Uno Golf Society played at Vistabella.
