NATIONAL BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIP COMES OF AGE The 21st opening ceremony of the National Lawn Bowls Championship was held in beautiful sunshine at San Luis Bowls Club on Saturday afternoon where almost 200 competitors, all resplendent in their club hose, paraded in front of a healthy and supportive crowd, at a venue adorned with the National and Regional flags. The opening ceremony is always a very colourful
affair and this year was no different as each of the 14 represented clubs marched on to the green in turn to be loudly applauded by the considerable number of spectators and guests who were present, before lining up in front of the officials' platform. Despite having the furthest distance to travel, Tenerife had the largest contingent on parade while the only representatives from the Costa del Sol were the two players from Benalmadena Bowls Club who received a particularly warm welcome as they led out the entire procession. Continued From Page One There was an especial welcome for the Umpires, always the beneficiaries of ‘friendly’ boo’s from the players, who tripped onto the rink to the echo’s of ‘Three Blind Mice’. Following the parade of teams John Muldoon, Spain National Director and Vice President of the European Bowls Union, welcomed the bowlers and all of the spectators to the ceremony. He gave thanks to his assistant, Pete Bonsor, and to the members of his committee, all of whom have worked so tirelessly as they have prepared and planned the tournament behind the scenes. He also thanked the sponsors and although there has been no major sponsor this year he was able to give thanks to the many local companies that provided their support. While Spanish Life Properties, CS Bowlswear, Winning Express, Aqua Pool Plaza, de Vere Investments, Ibex Insurance and the Leader Newspaper all provided either monetary or commercial assistance, the two main venues, Quesada and of course San Luis Bowls Club made available their facilities at a much reduced cost to the competition organisers, that in itself a major financial saving. His address was not without criticism, however, as he expressed his disappointment at the Federacion Espanola de Bolos and the lack of financial support provided by them to the sport, and to the National Team in particular. He said there were problems within the organisation but was, nevertheless, extremely confident that Council Member Bob Donnelly would make representations on behalf of Lawn Bowls at the next meeting in Madrid. He then wished all of the competitors a successful tournament, pointing out that it was their skills and exemplary conduct when playing that would make the competition such a memorable event. There were a few words of welcome, particularly to the ‘big spenders’ of Tenerife BC, from the owner of the Casa Ventura, home of San Luis Bowls Club, Vic Slater, after which the National Director invited Carol Grey of Ibex Insurance to roll the first bowl of the 2015 Tournament After all the formalities were over, the competitors retired for some welcome refreshment and a free buffet provided by Vic Slater before leaving to prepare for the start of the Pre National tournament on the following morning. Normally bowlers would go straight into the Nationals Competition proper but with entries down in numbers on previous years the organising committee took the decision to provide an additional opportunity, the Pre National 3 Bowls Open Pairs, which is currently being played using a ‘Round Robin’ format, at the same two venues,

The National Director was particularly critical of the Federacion and their lack of support to Lawn Bowls
until tomorrow, Tuesday, with the National Competition proper getting underway on Wednesday, opening with the Ladies Triples and the Men’s Rinks, For the successful competitors this will be an arduous two weeks, while for those not so lucky there is always the opportunity to renew old acquaintances and to make new friends. The tournament runs from until 23rd May and the greens being used, entry to which is absolutely free, are those at San Luis and Quesada. The two Blue Ribbon events, the Gents and the Ladies Singles, will see both defending champions Pete Bonsor and Anne Allen, get their title defences underway later in the week. Quesada’s Pete Bonsor will play N Birch on Saturday at San Luis while Anne Allen, the first ever Nationals Champion from Horadada Bowls Club, will take on P Robinson on Monday 18th at Quesada. Should Anne come through her first round tie she will certainly have her hands full in the second where she will meet the winner of the Lyn Greenland / Sue Johnston match. One other to watch in the Men’s Competition will be Frank Close, the current Valencian champion, and the recent winner of the Champion of Champions Competition held only a couple of weeks ago. Frank joins the competition at the Preliminary Round stage against B Edwards while the Champion of Champions Ladies Singles title holder, Mel Highland, will meet the winner of the preliminary tie between Lyn Bonsor and Rees. Spectators are more than welcome at all of the venues with play getting underway at 10am and 2pm at each venue and going on until late afternoon or early evening. A complete schedule of play is attached to this article at www.theleader.info
Another chapter closed on a story of lavish expense this week, as the Alicante based film studios, Ciudad de la Luz, was finally put on the market. Bought and paid for by the Regional Government of the Partido Popular, the studios were the location for numerous blockbuster films, although in the background, problems had already set in early on. In 2014, the General Court of the European Union stated 265 million euro in funding provided by the Generalitat Valenciana towards the construction of studios was granted illegally and therefore must now be recovered. The ruling confirmed the previous decision of the European Commission, which ordered the repayment of subsidies in May 2012, also dismissing any claims made by the Valencia government. The initial investigation came about after Pinewood Studios in London complained that the Alicante based studio infringed competition criteria. That investigation concluded that “no private investor would have agreed to invest” in the Ciudad de la Luz under the same terms as those set about by the Valencian Government and funded by public money, which therefore “greatly distorts competition between the major European film studios”. This week, the governing board approved the final specifications for the sale of the complex, and from the moment it is published in the Official Journal of the European Union, there will be 60 days in which potential buyers can submit their bids. The complex is available as a whole, but it is also possible to spilt the development into six separate areas, the sale of which will then take place through public auction. However, not all of the complex will be sold, there are some administration and office blocks which will remain, as well as a shopping and hotel area, which is owned by the company, but not considered part of the film studio complex. The requirements for the award is based on economical advantage, which will be processed by open tender and the contract awarded to the highest bidder. Once the sale is complete, like so many budding young actors, the hopes and dreams of the Ciudad de la Luz for a future in film will die forever, ending the closing chapter of this particular story in a series of expensive investments.

NORTH AFRICAN OVERHAUL FOR PASCUAL FLORES
The 'Pascual Flores' has arrived in Algeciras, Spain’s enclave in North Africa, where it will be put in ‘dry dock’ to undergo hull cleaning and painting. It left Torrevieja last Monday under the command of Captain Manuel Murube Seville, with seven crew, for the journey which lasted two days. In the usual Spanish fashion the schooner was given a ‘send off’ at a press conference held in Torrevieja Town Hall attended by the mayor, Eduardo Dolon, and the ship’s Captain, the Councillor for Culture, Luis Maria Pizana, and the director of the Nao Victoria Foundation which will be carrying out the work, Jose Fernandez de Cabo. The mayor said that the overhaul, at a cost of 18,000 euros, will be the first step in making the schooner a little more active on it’s return to local waters. The work in Algeciras is scheduled to take approximately two months. Once complete it will return to Torrevieja where it will remain under the control of the Nao Victoria Foundation and once again assume its duties as a tourist attraction where it will represent the values, culture and the seafaring history of Torrevieja. The councilor explained that the schooner could also
function as a mobile tourist office for Torrevieja and, in theory, it could promote the city by travelling all over the world. The director of the Nao Victoria Foundation stressed that the Pascual Flores is in good condition and remains a great attractionl for Mediterranean sailors. He said that it is the intention of the Foundation to show it worldwide. However two of Torrevieja’s political parties have criticized the possible new status of the schooner. PSOE spokesman, and candidate for mayor, Angel Saez, said the whole upkeep of the ship has already cost the city far too much from which the citizens are getting very little, if no, benefit. “We have already spent over 5 million euros on it’s upkeep and preservation’ he said, “It is probably worth around 6 million and we need to recover the money it has cost the city, therefore it should be advertised for sale and if somebody wants to buy the boat they should be allowed to do so”. However José Luis Alarcon, number 6 on the Sueña Torrevieja list of candidates for the forthcoming elections, totally rejected the transfer of assets for the schooner which have been going on for 25 years saying that it will be totally irresponsible to continue with such funding ".

ELECTION DAY BUS SERVICE The 2 bus routes which operate on the Orihuela Costa, which do not normally run on weekends between September and June, will be in service to cover Election Day, Sunday the 24th of March. In order to make it easier for coastal residents to reach the polling booths, the services will run to their normal timetable, between 9am and 3pm. In addition the bus service between Entrenaranjos en Torremendo will also be functioning on Sunday 24th of May, as the polling station for the Residents of Entrenaranjos is situated in Torremendo.
AGUAMARINA STAIR CASE Work has finally begun on the stairs to the Aguamarina beach. Last Year the construction collapsed due to the force of the sea that undermined the solid base of the access from the promenade to the beach. The work is costing some 28.000 euro, which has been authorized by the Ministry of Coasts and will now be finished before the summer.
TRIATHLON WEEKEND The Triathlon Playas de Orihuela will take place in Campoamor, La Glea beach on Sunday the 17th of May, starting at 10:30. This spectacular event is open to all to watch and has become a firm fixture on the sporting calendar of the Orihuela Costa.
PSOE CRITICIZE DIRTY PARKS IN ALGORFA Manuel Ros, spokesman for the PSOE in Algorfa, criticized the mayor last week stating that his council teams were only interested in cleaning up local parks and other green areas during the run up to elections. According to Snr Ros, despite regular complaints about their cleanliness, from residents in urban developments such as residential Lo Crispin or those located close to the golf course, it is only in recent weeks that they have seen any improvement to the usual grubby state that they have to suffer. Indeed on many occasions local residents have said they have been so ashamed at the state of their local leisure areas that they have offered to clean up the parks themselves but they have been told not to do so by council authorities. Ros also said that complaints are also common among young families living in the urban area located by the Benejúzar exit, in this case the state of the playground which is often used by small children is disgusting. The Socialists criticize the lack of sanitation in and around the park and that say that many of the facilities in the play-
ground are damaged and that the fence surrounding the area is broken. PP Mayor Antonio Lorenzo said that the allegations are unfounded and that his council team can regularly be seen out cleaning local parks which he says are generally kept in a very good condition. Of course there are occasional problems” he said, “but residents must take responsibility and call the council department when they see them. In that way we can get workmen onto the sites and deal with such matters quickly”.
MINUTE’S SILENCE FOLLOWING CHILD MURDER Torrevieja Council and Ayuntamiento staff held a minutes silence last Monday lunchtime as a mark of respect following the murder earlier in the day of a ten year old child by his mother’s partner. Mayor Dolon sent his sincere condolences to the family confirming that the Social Services would be doing everything they could by way of support to anybody who might have been affected by the tragic events.

SAFETY CONCERNS OVER N332 BRIDGE
A bridge in Guardamar del Segura, on the approaches to the junction of the CV-91 from Orihuela, with the N332, has developed what appears to be a serious crack in its structure. According to the municipal group Esquerra Unida which has warned of the apparent danger involved, the infrastructure supports a section of National-332 road which carries thousands of cars andheavy trucks every week. The crack is visible in both directions and the concern is that in recent weeks it seems to be getting gradually worse. Many residents who have been in contact with the Guardamar Ayuntamiento say there is a distinct possibility that the bridge could collapse. The leftist group warns that these cracks began to appear quite a while ago, "but you can see how they have recently become enlarged," according to spokesman Josep Carmona. “The bridge was built on variable terrain across the Rio Segura and the shifting path of the river has created additional problems for the bridge. It is also the point where the dual carriageway into Torrevieja begins. Carmona also said that this is an area where regular earthquakes occur causing, albeit very slight, movement of the bridge which has added to the structural problems, he would not, however, state that the danger was imminent although he did say that an immediate structural survey should be carried out by engineers from both the Ayuntamiento, which is responsible for the CV 91, and the Highways Agency, who are responsible for the National road.

TEN EXPÀTS FEATURE ON CLARO LIST OF CANDIDATES A correction seems called for in relation to Mr. Kearney’s claim to be an informed commentator, deeply involved in Orihuela politics. For years he has been the personal, loyal and biased mouthpiece for Pedro Mancebo who was head of the Centro Liberal Renovador (CLR) party until CLR gave up politically and decided not to contest the 24 May local elections. Pedro Mancebo then failed to be included in any party’s list of candidates. Interestingly, when Pedro Mancebo announced his retirement from local politics he declared his support for the Popular Party (the official one, not the breakaway PP group of Pepa Ferrando whom he earlier supported for Mayoress). He did not declare his support for the Ciudadanos Party headed by his former political colleague and CLR President, Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas who, with his business boss, cynically took over the local control of an emerging national party when they decided CLR’s reputation had slumped so low that it could not run again as a local Orihuela party. Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas produced one of the fastest turn of coats in political history, resigning one day from his job as councillor and President of CLR to becoming the next day head and chief candidate of Ciudadanos. Mr. Kearney, without a role as personal mouthpiece any longer, offers his comments on Orihuela politics from the same biased position as ever. No doubt in line with Pedro Mancebo’s endorsement, he suggests the new clean Popular Party which is split in two will get as many seats as last time when it was united. Unbiased commentators put their prospects much lower. What has kept Pedro Mancebo and Mr. Kearney going for the last 4 years has been their undisguised hostility to C.L.A.R.O. which they tried relentlessly to destroy. His prediction that C.L.A.R.O., focusing on only one area of the municipality, the coast, will not get a single councillor elected will turn out to be one of his greatest, deliberate errors. In the past two elections in 2007 and 2011 C.L.A.R.O. got half of the votes cast on the coast, more than the two major parties, the PP and Socialists together. There will be
Nearly one hundred CLARO supporters from the Coast and City in Orihuela on 2nd May after presenting their candidates more voters on the coast this time than before. C.L.A.R.O. has worked tirelessly over the past 9 years for Orihuela Costa and is fielding a stronger than ever team from Orihuela Costa, including 6 Brits, 2 Swedes, 1 Austrian and one Polish candidate. Furthermore, this time C.L.A.R.O. has strong support in Orihuela city and surrounding villages, headed by two well known and respected political figures, both like Bob Houliston, expelled from the CLR-CLARO one time alliance of Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas group in order
to curtail their democratic rights. Orihuela politics is a jungle with cut- throated contenders out to secure financial gain – commonly called corruption. It is essential to know who is who in order to vote for a party which will support and defend the interests of Orihuela Costa and Orihuela city too. No one should pay heed to Mr. Kearney’s biased and deliberately distorted political comments. C.L.A.R.O had been the only party that has continuously campaigned for the needs and rights of the people of Orihuela Costa.

UNCERTAIN FUTURE FOR ALICANTE The Professor of Human Geography at the University of Alicante (UA), José Ramón Valero, has warned of an uncertain future for Alicante as more and more men and women leave the area in search of work. Thousands of men and women, who increasingly see little of future for themselves in the region, are either moving overseas or to larger cities in the north, and in so doing they are creating a brain drain that leaves an uncertain future for the province, now facing an unprecedented demographic crisis that will continue to worsen in the coming years. Last year there was a loss of young people in all age groups but it was most pronounced among men over 25 years, particularly in the 30-34 year agegroup. Professor Valero speaks of a "lost generation", the "brain drain" and warns of the consequences that it will bring to the area. Population projections to 2019 show that all regions in the province, except L'Alacantí, will experience a population decrease with a negative migration balance, according to data provided by the Valencian Statistics Institute (IVE). The hardest hit will be the Marina Alta, down 1.10% according to the census. The Vinalopó and L'Alt Vinalopó Mitja also are below the average for the Region and will fall by 0.48% and 0.47%, respectively. The decrease will be less in the Baix Vinalopó (-0.16%), the Marina Baixa (-0.16) and the Baix Segura (-0.04). For Alicante the increase is only 0.05%. Carlos Gomez Gil, director of the Permanent Immigration Observatory and professor at the UA, confirmed that the demographic crisis is deepening and that now the province's future is uncertain, "with indications that generate uneasiness." "Emigration, which has already surpassed that of the 50s and 60s is a "gift" to European countries
like Germany, which benefit from its development, but is very negative for the evolution of local society", he said. Gil speaks of a "perfect demographic storm". He highlights several factors. The first is immigration, which has been the basis of population growth in recent years. "But now, for the first time in many years there is a setback," he warns. This factor is linked with falling birth rates and population replacement as well as the departure of young people from Alicante. "The crisis is very deep, but at the present time we are unable to gauge what will happen.” IVE data shows that of the 14,872 births in 2014, there will be a reduction of more than five hundred this year. However, in 2018 the decline will be 2,000. The fall in birth rates is as a result of the emigration of women from the age group 20-34 years. The Valencian Institute of Statistics project that 12,833 births will be recorded in 2018, which will be 2,039 less than in 2014. This new demographic situation is affecting the economic and social dynamism in the region and significant impacts can already be seen in infrastructure planning, not to mention bars and shops in that have had to close. Places are decreasing in schools, with the subsequent loss of teachers. This impact is also being seen in the universities, with replacement rates falling by up to 10%.

TORREVIEJA TO BECOME EXAM CENTRE FOR RUSSIAN UNI’S
The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, met with Sergey Kravtsov last Tuesday, the President of the Federal Agency for Monitoring, Education and Science in Russia, who was in the area primarily to meet with the city’s Russian residents, of which there are currently 5,300 listed on the electoral register.
He was also in the area to discuss matters education, with a view to establishing Torrevieja as the only city in Spain where Russian students can study and take examinations which will secure them the necessary certified qualifications to enter university in Russia. Kravtskov said that he was extremely impress by the education system in Spain and he had chosen to establish the city of Torrevieja as a ‘centre of excellence’ from a long list of candidates. After the meeting, the party visited the Permanent School of Adults (EPA) in Torrevieja, where they were received by its president, Joaquin Canovas. After inspecting the facilities he said that the school seems most likely to be the centre chosen to conduct these certification exams for those students wishing to enrol in Russian Universities.
COUR T DENIES TOLL ROAD COMPO The Courts have rejected a claim from the company which operates the toll road between Torrevieja and Cartagena for loss of earning equal to over 300 million euro. The company AUSUR filed the complaint against the Ministry of Development after the firm believed they had suffered 315 million euro losses as a result of the widening of the N332 between Guardamar, Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada. The claim totalled 315 million euro for loss of earnings between 2009 and 2048, when their contract ends, but the court rejected the claim as they believe the company were aware of the risk of the widening of the road when they had bid for the contract.

POTATO HEAD GOES VIRAL IN SPAIN 18-year-old Alberto left the Spanish TV series Masterchef Spain in tears two weeks ago. The potato on his dish had three scoops and five blades and was supposed to look like a lions head. In a Lion King-meetsFinding Nemo inspired dish, 18-year-old contestant, Alberto, presented "Lion eats prawn" to universal scorn from the judges. "This is an insult to my intelligence," scoffed judge Pepe Rodriguez, a renowned Spanish chef."Humour is important in cooking, but looking at this… I don’t find it funny at all." "What is this supposed to be? An insult to cooking!" said the jury and sent Alberto home. Meanwhile Alberto is receiving a lot of sympathy online. His potato head is going viral: the hashtag #leoncomegamba is trending and the photo shots keep coming back. And one of the judges, Jordi Cruz, has apologised. "It wasn't my intention to insult anyone," he says

BUZZY ALICANTE Bomberos in Alicante have removed a hive containing swarming bees this week, after 6000 were found to be bothering residents in a town centre street. The removal was the latest in a series of urban hive repatriations, which have seen the hives swarms moved to more appropriate locations. Local farmers are keen to preserve the bees, as their numbers are dwindling due to drought and disease.
LYNX SUCCESS Conservation groups have hailed the birth of two Iberian lynx cubs as a breakthrough in a costly project to save a species that many fear could become the first feline mammal to die out for 2,000 years. The births are believed to be the first in the wild for decades outside Andalusia, where the partly EUfinanced project to save the species was launched 12 years ago, after its numbers had fallen to fewer than 100 in the wild. It is now believed that there are at least 300, and the fact that at least one pair has now bred in the vicinity of Badajoz, in western Spain, suggests that the animal may be re-establishing itself across a wider area.

CAT CULL IN CARTAGENA
PP DISCRIMINATION
Dear Editor, Your piece on the proposed cat cull in Cartagena was not accurate. The letter received by the president of Cuatro Gatos implied that the cats would start to be exterminated unless this very small charity put a plan of full vaccination, etcetera, in place in a month. The Ayuntamiento doesn´t give any money to this charity which makes the situation impossible. The charity has had most of the cats on the colonies neutered with money from Brigitte Bardot´s charities. If the Ayuntamiento starts putting the cats down there will be all hell to pay when they go up against BB´s very large charitable organisation. The Ayuntamiento is currently paying 300,000 euros a year to CATAD which runs the dog pound and is rumoured to put animals down fast. CATAD has not had its contract renewed this year. The money would be better spent with a charity like Cuatro Gatos.
Dear Editor, Since 31 October 2004, I have been a member of the Partido Popular and it is interesting to note that in each election the PP always promises to include foreigners in their candidate lists. In the lead-up to the municipal elections 2015, the foreign press were invited to Alicante, where Jose Ciscar, the President of the PP Alicante and VicePresident of the Comunidad Valenciana, held a press conference at the party headquarters of the PP in Alicante. One reporter asked whether he would take into account the large proportion of the electorate who were foreigners and taxpayers when it came to compiling the election lists. He answered as follows: “I myself was councillor in Moraira, an area with a high percentage of foreigners and I appreciate the problems of foreigners. Therefore, I will make sure that this time every city in the province will place foreigners in good positions on the candidate lists for the PP. I do not know what my predecessors had promised, but when I say this, this is what will happen and foreigners will be placed in respon-

sible positions.” On April 21 when the final lists appeared, I was shocked and distressed to find that in every city in the province no foreigners were placed in good positions on the various lists. Their placements in PP lists, if it occurred at all, were in derisory positions, well down the lists. The way Jose Ciscar transmitted the message to us was so encouraging that everyone believed him that the large population of foreigners would get a just representation at last. But once again it was just more deception. My message to all non-Spaniards to vote during the municipal elections 2015: Do not vote for the PP; this party has no interest what so ever in allowing the ever increasing and large population of resident taxpaying foreigners to participate actively in politics in Spain. After 11 years I have no doubt that this is so and I cannot accept this blatant discrimination against foreigners. Accordingly, I have now resigned from the Partido Popular (PP). NON-RESIDENT TAX FORM, MODELO 210 I wonder if you could ask your readers if anyone has tried to access and fill out the above on-line tax form. It appears I have done everything right except the taxable base amounts? I have used last years figures by dividing the cadastral value by 1.1 and then finding 24.75% of the resulting figure to give me the tax I have to pay. However, when I then try to validate the form to print it off I get and error warning stating that I do not have the figures correct and I don't know where to check the figures I have used. Can anyone who has used this form advise me? I am trying to find the taxable base amount for my 2014 non-resident tax, can you advise me please? James McMahon
CARRIL BICI EN ORIHUELA COSTA It is with surprise, that we read the negative comments regarding part of the
cycling lanes in the press. We fully understand that a complete separate cycling lane always is the best option, but in many streets this is not possible and especially in Cabo Roig the parking spaces had to be taken in consideration. Therefore in the drafting of the project (Servef / Development) the option "shared street" that has the name "ciclocalle" was chosen and will, upon completion, be signposted (indication signal S-860) along with a signal with the inscription "shared walkway". This model has already been in successfully applied and has become common practice for years in different European countries and also in Spain. It is clear that this type of “shared street” requires a coexistence between the car and the bike and also the necessary respect by the car driver in front of the driver of the bike (and vice versa). During my visit in Ghent / Belgium four years ago I could see that this coexistence can work very well, but I understand that this is something new to which we must adjust. INTRODUCING CLARO There are ten Expat Candidates on the CLARO list. Here is Part One of a short introduction to each of them BOB HOULISTON Bob Houliston is a founder member of C.L.A.R.O. Elected President in 2006 and re-elected every year since. Bob first started having holidays in Orihuela Costa during the 1980’s then moved here to live after his retirement in 2002. For 29 years was a European Commission civil servant, serving mainly in Brussels but with spells in New Delhi and Tunisia. 10 years prior to 1973 he was a member of British diplomatic service with postings to Copenhagen and Geneva. He became involved in Orihuela Costa politics due to the injustice of the Orihuela-based political parties siphoning off taxes paid by Orihuela Costa residents to spend essentially on those who could deliver votes to re-elect them. He feels strongly that the people of Orihuela Costa have should exercise their right to vote and that they should receive fair treatment and services from the Orihuela local government.
JAN HOLDEN Jan Holden originates from Birmingham and always lived and worked near Birmingham until she moved to Spain. She was a social worker before she started her long teaching career delivering qualifying social work courses and social care courses. She moved to Spain with her two children in 2000, living firstly in Torrevieja and for the last five years in Orihuela Costa. She became involved in local politics as a direct con-
Part two of this feature will appear on 18 May, in next Monday’s edition of the Leader Newspaper. sequence of the analysing the discrimination shown by the politicians of Orihuela to the people of the Orihuela Costa. She feels very strongly that the Costa should have a fair share of the council budget and that that the people of Orihuela Costa should have the same services and facilities as the people living in Orihuela. KARL FAILONI Karl Failoni comes from Graz, Austria. Prior to moving to Spain he spent forty years in the restaurant business in the UK, working in Birmingham, Manchester and Saddleworth, plus two years in Jersey. He moved to Spain upon retirement and had hoped to enjoy the climate and the culture; however he soon became very active in C.L.A.R.O and local politics. He feels that the coast should have its fair share of amenities and finances without everything being based in Orihuela. He firmly believes that all the people in the Orihuela municipality should be treated equally where ever they live. He wants to see that families living in Orihuela Costa have a positive future with good education and job opportunities. He wants everyone in Orihuela to have their rights respected and to be treated equally. NORAH BOND Norah Bond was born in Kent but lived in Berkshire for many years where she had a large range of business interests. Norah took an active role in the Local Business Partnership in her area and was the secretary of the North Hampshire Federation of Small Businesses. She
retired to Spain 2000, mainly due to health problems. Since living on Orihuela Costa Norah founded Help At Home Costa Blanca and was its first President and she is currently Secretary General of the charity that provides help to those in need in their own homes, of all ages and nationalities. She has been involved with C.L.A.R.O for many years and has been a long standing member of the Executive Committee. She is passionate about the rights of people living on the coast and their requirements for improved social services. HELENE AKERMAN Helene Akerman was born in Sweden but lived for many years in the UK before she moved to Orihuela Costa with her two children when she undertook a work placement as part of her language university course one and a half years ago. She is presently employed in the Scandinavian School teaching Spanish, English and Music. She very quickly became engrossed in local politics and C.L.A.R.O when she realised how neglected Orihuela Costa was in comparison to Orihuela. She passionately believes that all the children of Orihuela Costa should have good educational and leisure opportunities and that there should be career opportunities available here on the coast to ensure that families can grow and prosper. She wants to make sure that Orihuela Costa is a place where families can have a positive future.

VAUXHALL/GM MARKS 90-YEAR ANNIVERSARY GM celebrates 500 million vehicles produced Vauxhall has made ‘a significant contribution’ after 90 years of GM ownership GM & Vauxhall continue to innovate after more than a century in business General Motors has become the first car manufacturer in the world to produce 500 million vehicles, as Vauxhall in the UK – GM’s fourth largest market – celebrated 90 years of ownership by the US company. ‘During 2015, we expect to sell more than 1,000 new vehicles per hour, 24 hours per day,’ said Mary Barra, GM’s CEO. ‘This adds up to nearly ten million vehicles, the most in our history. I look at this extraordinary volume as ten million opportunities to prove what kind of company we are and to say thank you.’ Vauxhall D-Type staff car
The landmark figure came 90 years after General Motors purchased Vauxhall in 1925 in what was the American company’s first overseas acquisition. Luton-based Vauxhall, which is Britain’s oldest surviving car manufacturer, very quickly repaid GM’s investment and to date has sold nearly 14.5 million vehicles in its own right. Like its parent company, which pioneered the automatic transmission, the V-8 engine and the first airbags in a production vehicle, Vauxhall has a long history of innovation too. Just 10 years into GM ownership it produced the DY and DX models, the first British cars with independent front suspension. Two years later the H-type was launched, the first British car to have an integral body and chassis. But perhaps the most significant achievement for Vauxhall is its 112 years of continuous vehicle production, even during both World Wars when it manufactured the D-type Army Staff Car and Churchill Tank respectively from its Kimpton Road plant in Luton. Today, Vauxhall’s Vivaro van is still built on Kimpton Road, with a further five million vehicles produced by the company’s Ellesmere Port plant since it opened in 1964. ‘Vauxhall has made a significant contribution to GM’s success, and we are very proud to be part of its global family,’ said Tim Tozer, Vauxhall’s Chairman and Managing Director.

SIMPLY FORD 2015 SHINES DESPITE SHOWERS
Beaulieu threw open its gates for Simply Ford on Sunday 3rd May 2015, welcoming Fords of all ages, shapes and sizes into the attraction’s parkland. Not even a showery start could put a dampener on the day, with over 900 cars taking part in the event, ranging from highly modified modern examples to immaculate classics. Over 1700 visitors joined the event, now in its sixth year, as it celebrated all vehicles built with a blue oval badge. For 2015, the Ford Transit was a star of the show, with a special display commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of Britain’s favourite van. Judith Maddox, Beaulieu’s Events Manager, said “Simply Ford has got the 2015 calendar of Simply rallies off to a flying start. Always a hugely popular event with owners and spectators alike, due to its welcoming atmosphere, this year saw a wide range of different vehicles on display.” The Transit Van Club’s display spanned the five decade history of this legendary workhorse, as the latest models mixed in with examples of the classic Mk1, rugged Mk2 and streamlined Mk3. A crowd favourite was Tasha Rose’s immaculate 1969 camper van, adorned with one-off Jimi Hendrix-inspired artwork on its pristine panels. Show regulars Ford Heritage supported the celebration with their own Transit Mk1, the oldest example still on Britain’s roads, along with the legendary Transit Supervan 3. This lightweight monster wowed crowds as its raucous V8 engine, mounted in the middle of the van, was started up several times during the day. Almost thirty other clubs showcased their members’ remarkable machines. The Mondeo Mk2 Owners’ Club brought along a range of these once-common family cars, while fast Ford lovers enjoyed the XR Owners’ Club stand, where examples of the XR2, XR3i and XR4 could all be found. Nobody could miss the eye-searing line-up of the Electric Orange ST Club, a crowd favourite featuring no less than nine examples of the performance focused Focus ST, all finished in the same vivid orange hue. Elsewhere in the event, Capris, Escorts and Focuses rubbed shoulders with older Ford models, such as Prefects, Populars, and Anglias. American Fords such as a Galaxie and a V8-powered Econoline ‘dayvan’ contrasted with the British Corsair and Cortinas
Ford Anglia Delux also on show. Beaulieu’s Commercial Director, Stephen Munn, presented the People’s Choice award to Dave Pritchard for his Escort Cosworth. Dave, who had driven down from Wiltshire to attend the event, has spent over £30,000 lovingly upgrading and restoring his Escort over ten years of ownership, including swapping the original turbocharger for an even bigger one to give a total power output of 630bhp. Among the runners up, were Jim Watson with his beautifully presented Ford 100E Popular and Steve Blewitt whose American Ford 300 Custom is believed to be the only example in the UK. Simply Ford will return on Sunday 1st May 2016, for more details visit www.beaulieu.co.uk/beaulieu-events.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Fight Alzheimer’s Learn a Language! I often hear expats complaining about the difficulties of learning Spanish, despite being well aware that their experiences as an expat would be greatly enhanced by making the effort to communicate in the language of their new country. Sadly, many fail in the process, despite their best efforts and sometimes through no fault of their own. Ideally, expats should have a working knowledge of the language before they even set foot in their newly adopted country. How often did we hear during the UK election campaign, for instance, politicians and the public complaining about immigrants arriving in the UK without a working knowledge of the language? This lack of ability to communicate creates barriers, suspicion and resentment, and is one of the many reasons why immigration can become such a divisive issue in any community. Life is not predictable, and for most expats, learning a language is a long and continuing process upon arrival. However, it can be fun and it is a willingness to try that is important. I have often heard, and read reports indicating that learn-
ing a language after the age of fifty is very difficult, although many good teachers will dispute this. Certainly, the quality of teaching, materials used, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn are all part of the ingredients of any learning, be it with others in a group, as an individual, in small group lessons, or simply following a recorded language course. I vividly remember that as a newly arrived expat in Spain, I signed up for a language course funded and promoted by the municipality. I attended the first evening with great enthusiasm until I met the other 39 newly arrived expats in my class. The pointlessness and frustration of trying to learn for an hour in a class of 40 other middle aged people was sad to experience, and is only successful in putting people off learning a new language. Indeed, a few weeks later when I checked what was going on, the class size had reduced to just five people. Maybe this was the overall intention, but it is a very sad and destructive way to promote learning of a language. Despite the difficulties and frustrations when learning a new language, there is also plenty of good news. A recent report claims that using Spanish in everyday situations, as well as regularly attending classes, can help to prevent or delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. The research claims that the first signs of dementia can be delayed by at least five years by learning a language. Expats living in Spain are certainly at an advantage, and are most likely to benefit since those who regularly use the

FLYING THE NEST YOUNG adults in Spain have long been famous for remaining in the family nest longer than their northern European counterparts, but four other EU countries beat them hands down, latest figures from the continent's statistics agency, Eurostat, claim. Whilst Swedes leave home at a much younger age than anywhere else on the continent – at just over 19-anda-half years old – Croatians are on average only a month shy of their 32nd birthdays when they finally stop living with their parents. In Spain, they are just over a month short of turning 28 when they leave home, on average.
SECOND WIND language are even more likely to fight off Alzheimer’s than those who have merely studied a language in isolation in their home country and then fail to use it in day-today situations. Doctors have claimed for many years that thinking activities, such as Sudoku and crosswords help to ward off confusion and memory loss in old age. In addition, specialists claim that those who speak two or more languages have an even stronger chance of retaining their mental faculties. Well, I can take a hint; I’m just off for my Chinese lesson. Spain's anti-austerity party Podemos, whose meteoric rise has upended the country's politics, is seeking a second wind as an internal crisis over strategy hits and polls show its popularity may have peaked. The surprise resignation on Thursday of one of the party's founders, 52-year-old political science professor Juan Carlos Monedero, threw the spotlight on party divisions ahead of regional and local elections on May 24, and a general election later in the year. "There are tensions at the heart of Podemos," Monedero told an online radio station hours before he announced his surprise resignation.

E X PAT S T O PAY F O R U K H E A LT H C A R E Tighter controls within the NHS mean that British expats without the necessary paperwork can no longer expect free medical treatment during trips back to the UK, said OverseasGuidesCompany.com. “Previously, some expats have been able to travel back to the UK to take advantage of free healthcare for certain conditions, without questions over their residency status,” said Elaine Ferguson, Head of the Resource Centre at OverseasGuidesCompany.com. “But forthwith, non-residents of the UK, including British expats who are resident in the European Economic Area (EEA) and who are not UK state pensioners, will have to pay for NHS treatment they receive back in the UK out of their own pocket, unless they have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from their European place of residence or the necessary medical insurance. This excludes treatment in A&E departments and GP surgeries. Similarly, expats resident in a country outside of the EEA will be billed 150 per cent of the NHS nation-
al tariff for any NHS care they receive if they are not covered by suitable medical insurance. “Meanwhile, qualifying UK pensioners living in the EEA, which includes all EU states, have nothing to fear as they are now entitled to the same level of NHS care as pensioners resident in the UK, so long as they are registered for healthcare in Europe with an S1 form. “This clamping down is an example of how the UK’s austerity measures are affecting expats. Times are changing and if you’re not a UK pensioner, you can no longer just nip back to the UK for free healthcare when it suits you – and this should be taken into consideration before relocating abroad. Healthcare should be a key concern of anyone moving abroad, in particular if you are retired or approaching retirement, so now it’s even more important to be satisfied with the standard – and, if applicable, costs - of medical treatment that will be available in your new home.”

He has since returned to the Costas and established his own hearing consultancy, which delivers the same UK standards of care and service, as well as recognised brand names that his clients can depend upon. SERVICES Hill's Hearing Care can offer a complete service, from the initial hearing test, to prescription and fitting of a broad spectrum of hearing aids. Leslie explained that hearing aids differ in accordance with the person's needs, preferences and lifestyle, and that he is dedicated to finding the best possible solution to suit all three. After a very successful club trip to watch the running of the wine horses at Caravaca De La Cruz on Saturday, we have had a quiet week of bowling with just one league match. That being away to La Siesta Hornets, where we had some splendid bowling and good fun, though I was spectating, being my turn to be reserve. Whilst I am sure a minority may feel they didn’t play as well as they would have hoped, certainly one or two were out of position and a few are new players. But overall the play was good and I feel that taking 2 rinks away from home is never a bad result. Marion Haynes, David Haynes and Richard Needham 17-18. No result from the Lancasters for the Monday game. On Wednesday in the Valencian Championship league. The Tigers were at home to Monte Mar Lords. Melanie Highland got off to a good start winning the ladies singles, unfortunately Chris Brazier was not allowed to follow suit in the men’s singles. The pairs, triples and rinks all had close games with the pairs & triples just managing to win by a couple of shots each. The rinks had a draw which resulted in the Tigers winning by 9 points to 3 points for Monte Mar Lords. A steady performance all round. The Lions did not fare so well away against San Luis Falcons, with their only win coming courtesy of Peta Rhodes in the Ladies Singles. On Thursday the Federated bowlers played against a team of Tenerife, who are here in preparation for the Spanish Nationals which start on Sunday. No result of the game. Back to the SABA league & the Blenheims were once again at San Miguel against the Moors. They managed to win 3 rinks but lost out on the overall for a 6 points to 8. Provincial Team
Sponsored by Kameeleon On Saturday 2nd May as part of the 10 year celebrations at Monte Mar, the provincial team played against them. With 8 members of the Provincial squad playing for Monte Mar it was always going to be a tough match and so it proved. The day started by welcoming 5 new players to the Provincial squad – Carole Donnellan, John Simpson, Nigel Baigent, Dennis Birkett & Jacqui Johnston. There were also 4 players who were playing their 6th game who all received a shirt with the provincial badge, sponsored by Gary Mendel of Kameeleon. Sandra Heath, Carol Broomfield, Sandie Thompson & Johnny Raby. The photo shows the new players & the newly badged players. The Provincial Men won on 2 rinks. Mal Parsons, Barry Norris, Nigel Baigent & Mike Edwards 1916. William Holtham John Simpson Brian Harman & Barry Latham 20-10. The Provincial ladies unfortunately only manage to win on 1 rink. Carol Broomfield, Carole Donnellan, Sandra Heath & Val Hignett 20-13. With the result being 3 rinks each it cae down to shots & the Provincial took the honours 105-98. The Provincial would like to thank Monte Mar for the invitation to join their 10 year anniversary celebrations.
A LEGION OF TRAVELLERS The Royal British Legion Legionnaires Bowls Group didn't have room for its members' buckets and spades when it embarked on a (full) coach trip down to Mojacar recently. Instead the selected team from the Group went with their bowls gear and plenty of supporters in preparation for the planned friendly match against the local team there, The Indalo Bowls Club. Unfortunately the result was not as bright for The Legionnaires as the weather, with Indalo coming out the decisive overall winners. The rink results were 3 draws, 4 wins to Indalo and 1 win to the Legionnaires; despite that a most enjoyable weekend was had by all. Particular thanks go to the members of San Luis Bowls Club who made up the numbers and Allan and Dianne Budd for making all the arrangements.
LA MARINA BOWLS CLUB By Bobbie Sims VCL 2015 - Unfortunately not a happy result for our game against Greenlands Jasmine especially as it was the last game before the break for the Nationals....our score of 0 points to 12 and shots of 68-114 does not show how close some of the results could have been, Peter Parsons only lost on the last end at 20-21 , it was a very tight finish, and the rinks pulled back from a poor start to 14-14 with two ends to go and it was only a very good ditch shot from the opposition that closed the game.well done everyone....keep going.
SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB Pat McEwan VCL League - On Wednesday our MAVERICKS made the trip to County Bowls, with San Miguel playing some exceptional bowling. The Pairs and Triples were very tight with both games ending in a draw on the last end, The.Ladies and Gents singles, and the Rinks had good wins and we came away with 10 points to 2. A very good result. The SHERIFFS drew 6-6 playing at home. Well done to both teams. On Friday, in the Southern League the MOORS won 8-6 against Quesada, but the CHRISTIANS had a bad day at San Luis and lost on all rinks. Want to learn to play, or just play for fun - Come and join the WASPS on a Wednesday afternoon. For 5euros you can borrow woods and shoes and get free tuition. Turn up for 1.30, come as you are, no need for whites. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OUR BOWLERS WHO ARE PLAYING IN THE SPANISH NATIONALS. THE 2015 IRISH OPEN at Royal County Down will mark Sergio Garcia’s first appearance in 15 years at the tournament. The Irish Open launched his professional career as a teenager in 1999, when he edged out Angel Cabrera to win his first European Tour title at Druids Glen. Host Rory McIlroy will head an impressive list of contestants, among them fellow compatriots Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell. The Irish Open has a history of repeat winners, among them Faldo and Ballesteros, so defending champion Mikko Ilonen will be hoping to carry on the tradition. Old Tom Morris helped to design some 30 links courses, but Royal County Down is considered to be his finest effort. The club minutes from 1889 show that Mr. Morris was rewarded with £6.50 for his trouble, which would have pleased him as he usually only got a fiver.
THE COBRA FLY Z DRIVER has been named My Golfspy’s most wanted driver for 2015. It features Speed Channel Technology; an engineered trench around the perimeter of the face to increase ball speeds across it. Weight has been removed from key areas to increase the size of the sweetspot, with a low, backward CG to reduce spin and increase launch. My Golfspy reported: ‘FLY Z delivers the ultimate blend of maximum distance and forgiveness. It’s the most complete driver on our list.’ ON JUNE 15th CHAMBERS BAY will welcome the U.S. Open to the Pacific Northwest for the first time in its history. The links style course on Puget Sound, designed by Robert Trent Jones was constructed on a former gravel quarry, and has massive, rolling fairways, towering dunes and undulating greens. The players, some of whom have walked the 7,742 yd. course, have given it mixed reviews, and apparently the organizers are considering placing tee boxes on slopes,
which has brought an outraged response (especially from Ian Poulter, always prone to outraged responses.) The 1st and 18th holes may be either a par 4 or par 5 on the day, depending on the unpredictable wind conditions. Should be fun.

A CHIPPING TIP from Pitch Perfect: Good chippers start with the shaft forward at address. This hinges the wrists and creates the angle required for a solid downward strike. After that they just have to maintain the angle through the swing. Do the same and you’ll make smooth, solid contact every time. (Oh yeah!) RORY WAS IMPRESSIVE in the WGC Cadillac but Danny Willett’s brilliant Match Play debut was just as memorable. 28 year old Willett, from Sheffield, said afterwards he was sorry to have lost the semi final to Gary Woodland but was thrilled to have beaten Jim Furyk in the consolation match playoff and reached the World Top 40. The interviewer, obviously having trouble with Danny’s Yorkshire accent, and not sure whether to say ‘Hard Luck or Well Done!’ just patted him on the back. ‘TOPGOLF’ LOOKS LIKE A CROSS between a bowling alley and sports bar. Players hit golf balls with sensors into huge, coloured holes that act as targets on a green. Add a cocktail bar, loud Top 40 music and a gastropub menu and you have the latest sports craze. Twins Steve and Dave Jolliffe opened the first TopGolf in Watford in
2004. By 2007, they had opened two more in England and three in the United States. In 2011, they sold TopGolf for more than $28 million to private investors including Callaway. Everything has been redesigned to cater for a younger audience, playing pool or video games while awaiting their turn. "You're seeing a whole new group being introduced to the game, who ordinarily wouldn't go anywhere near a golf course,” says Steve Joliffe. To be honest, we probably wouldn’t want them anywhere near it either. Until next time: Happy Golfing. Contact Mick for your regripping and repair requirements. Tel: 638 859 475.

for the first. Two more tons from Spiceman were equalled by Eyre in the second, who closed the leg for one apiece. It was dart for dart in the next, both players rarely missing the 20 bed and always finding the treble, ending with Eyre going ahead on D20. Both Hyenas traded tons in the fourth, plus a couple of real dodgy
MENS SINGLES 3-2 Nick Spicer (Hub Hyenas)
Finals night kicked off with the triples, an all Hub affair, league champions versus runners up. Joe Miller won the bull and started with an 85, the Kats response from Pat Abrams was a 140. Simon Williams and Joe Hawkins 100 supported well, the opposition via Lee Maiden countering with a 95, Abrams yet another 140. It was nip and tuck down to low 3 figures. Paul Durrant hit his best score of the 701 to leave a shot which was tidied up by Maiden on D20. The Kats turned the screw in the second with six 80+ scores, Abrams 125, Maiden 100, the opposition hanging in there but a gap emerging. Durrant once again set up a nice finish for Abrams to game shot on D20. Miller recording the Hyenas only ton. Williams and Miller opened with some decent scoring with what was to be the last leg, Hawkins struggling just a little. Tons from Durrant and Abrams added to five more 80+ left the Hyenas back in three figures territory as Maiden calmly planted D10 second arrow for a convincing 3-0 victory. Hawkins admitted to being a little nervy in his first important final, but the experience will do his unquestionable ability no harm. The mens singles semis followed, with the contestants doing the draw to determine their destiny. Abrams drew Alex Nikolov in the first winning the bull. Both players found the treble 20 surprisingly easy to hit, however only Abrams managed a ton in the first. Doubles opportunities were missed by Nikolov as Abrams took the first on D8 and then opened with 85,140,100 in the second. Just a ton from the likeable Bulgarian as Abrams made it 2-0 on D2. Nikolov managed three 80+ scores in the third, but Abrams stuck with him and concluded the match on D10 for a place in the final. Abrams opponent was to be either John Eyre or Nick Spicer both from the Hub Hyenas. Eyre won the bull and started with some accurate but modest scoring arrows. Spicer´s opening shot of just 11 was followed by 100,140,122 plus D2 Pint Depot Kings, Div 2 Runners Up

Hub Hyenas, Pairs Champs, League, KO Cup, Triples and Singles Runners Up scores, before Spiceman made it all square on D10. Eyre struggled in the decider, probably due to the heat, Spicer taking full advantage of winning the throw to go well into the lead with a 120 (one on the floor) and a 99. The outcome was inevitable as requiring D16, Spicer found the middle of the double for a 3-2 score in what was a very exciting match. A 15 minute break followed before the same two were on the oche again, this time against Paul Dowington and Peter O´Rourke (Busters) in the pairs final. Dowington won the bull and started with a 140, steady scores from Spicer were accompanied by a 121 from Eyre. O´Rourke used two darts to take the opener. Six 80+ scores, three from each team, plus a 132 from Eyre gave Spicer the chance to level on D16. Despite the Hyenas being favourites, the Busters duo gave a real good account of themselves scoring heavily in the third.
LEADER By Paul Durrant
Unfortunately the cuddly duo were on a roll and scores of 99,140,125 were enough for Spiceman to make it 2-1 on D16. Dowington pulled out the stops in the fourth, 81,100,100, partner O´Rourke just struggling to find any consistency. Both Leah and Simone teams made it to the double with Alex together, both unconvincing in their double attempts until Spicer made it 3-1 on D10 to take the title. The Alex Nikolov Building Services Ladies Final followed with Simone de Lacy (Junction Jaguars) facing Leah Chesworth (Sporting Life) for the magnificent Nikolov trophy. De Lacy won the bull, both girls scoring steadily to get to a shot in 18 darts. The Jaguar had first chance of a double and immediately took it for 1-0 on D16. Chesworth enjoyed throw in the second and reeled off four decent scores. De Lacy´s response was explosive 81,81,60,100,100 to leave an out after 15. Chesworth was close to the Jaguar, her last three darts leaving a game shot opportunity, it wasn’t to be however as de Lacy found S10,D5 for 2-0 and the coveted title. It was one of the best Ladies Singles Finals I have witnessed and very enjoyable for the packed Celler audience. Next on before the Presentation were Pat Abrams and Nick Spicer to battle for the Singles title, what a prospect. Spicer won the all important bull and opened with 100,81,120 and 98. Abrams response was 140,100 and scores enough to get first tilt at D14 achieved second arrow for 1-0. Abrams lone score of 81 in the second was totally eclipsed by his opponent´s 140,81,140 plus D16 to level. A 121 from Spicer in the third was the highest from both as requiring 97 the Hyena used just two to finish the 501 on T19,D20 for a 2-1 lead. It was Spicer´s turn to hit just the one high score in the fourth, a ton, as Abrams managed 2 tons and 95 to leave 36, achieved next time on the oche with D9. At two each it was bull up for the decider as Abrams found the semi, Spicer just outside. It proved crucial as the fifth was score for score. Two tons each, three 80+ scores each, but the throw proved vital as Abrams was first to the double securing D8 for victory and the defence of his title. Fantastic conclusion to the Euronics League. The Presentation followed, conducted by Tracey Dodds of Euronics, in the absence of Debbie and Dave Wright currently enjoying life with friends Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel in Barcelona.

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF
(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Chatterbox’ Before we start I had better explain that I am not talking about her in doors (only joking ladies) or the playing partner that just will not shut up. The chatterbox to which I refer is the voice inside your head that you hear when you are thinking or alone. Unfortunately it is the source of negative thoughts and heralds doom, gloom and losing. If you possess an internal golfing chatterbox it usually sounds something like this: “If I go for the green I could get a birdie but if is miss the green I could lose the ball and ruin the rest of the round and waste the long hours of practise but if I don’t go for the green I have lost a good opportunity and my golfing mates will take the mickey and call me a wimp”. Do you recognise this circle of thoughts? I bet you do because we will all have fallen foul of our golfing chatterbox during our golfing lives. Now that you know that it exists you will also realise just how difficult it is to switch off. The only way to overcome the chatterbox is to out talk the negativity by re-affirming the positive aspects of your golf game. Literally speaking start to talk to your self in can’s and not cant’s and stop moaning and groaning and take positive action. As soon as a negative though pops into your head, say STOP to your self and immediately replace the negative thought with a positive one. For example, when faced with a 4ft putt on the 18th hole to win the competition, your chatterbox will say, “I have GOT to hole this putt”, and immediately you will feel stress and muscle tension. Replace that thought with,” I am GOING to hole this putt, and just feel the difference in the impact on your body. Go on give it a try! It will not be easy to change because your chatterbox has staying power and will introduce ‘what if’ thoughts to your conscious mind and feed the fundamental lack of confidence and trust that we have in our abilities. Remember you are not a failure if you do not succeed in anything but you are a success because you try. It is also important to lighten up and not take yourself too seriously because trust me, nothing is that important. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. SAN MIGUEL GOLF SOCIETY AT VILLAMARTIN
The largest turnout of the year so far, 36 members and 12 guests were met with glorious weather and a course with fairways and greens in good condition. An unusually early start meant the 8 returnees recently arrived from a two week trip to the USA had even less time to get over their jet lag than they had probably hoped. However, four of them were in the prizes at the right end of the results, with another chipping in with the Abacus prize of a bottle of wine. Whilst to be applauded for their efforts it was really a day when the ladies took the spotlight, winning 2 of the three category prizes and the best guest, as well as a runners-up position and a nearest the pin. Percentage wise the men took a hell of a beating!! Well done Jenny, Ellen, Marg and Paula! There was one SMGS individual match play competition singles held, with another American traveller Alan MacDonald dragging himself away long enough from following how the SNP are doing in the build up to Thursday’s UK election to beat Captain Phil de Lacy 3 and 2. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Tommy Boyle (29), 3rd Ray Ewins (30), 2nd Ellen Drakesmith (34), and 1st, Jenny Staines with 35 points. Silver Category: 4th Phil de Lacy (31 on CB), 3rd Alan MacDonald (31 on CB), 2nd Mike Jordan (34) and 1st Marg Birtwistle with 35 points.
Gold Category: 4th John Aitchison (33 on CB), 3rd John Osborne (33 on CB), 2nd Barry Roehrig (34), and 1st, with the best score of the day and a welcome return to form, Tony Smale with 37 points. The Abacus was won by Mick Roscoe, perhaps still suffering from that jet lag mentioned! Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Phil de Lacy (6), Mike Fearnehough (9), Marg Birtwistle (13) and Tony Dawson (17). Three best guest prizes today due to the high number attending. 3rd Peter Wells (29), 2nd Bart Winters (32) and 1st, with a productive return to playing with us, Paula Hagart with 33 points. Welcome back Paula! Our thanks go to the staff at Villamartin golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf gettogethers. Next week we will be at Lo Romero.
ALFIES GOLF SOCIETY AT LA RONDA Last Thursday saw 28 golfers from Alfies Golf Society head for El Valle Golf Club. The layout of this course is second to none with many fair challenges, good bunkers, good tee boxes, just enough water to keep you focussed, fast wide fairways and consistent greens, if your ball was above the hole, talk about putting down a marble staircase. No wonder this course is used as part of the European Tour Qualifying School.
The weather played its part; it was perfect for golf, sunny, not too hot with a slight breeze that picked up slightly as the day wore on. This course sorted out the men from the boys as no one broke par (without the help of a generous slope), a real treat to play. Our champion of the day was our President, Ian Connell, with 39 stableford points; second place went to our resident Landlord, Mike Morris, with 37 points. Our Best Guest prize went to Mick Hemmings, who scored an excellent 42 points. The minor prizes went to: Nearest the pin: Ian Ingledew, Nearest the Pin in two shots: Steve Mason, Longest Drive: Sandy Ewen Many thanks to all that attended and to Mike Morris and Anita, from Alfies Bar, for the usual delicious buffet, also to Dana (our Honorary Member) for her help with the Charity Raffle, which is helping the mental health charity MIND and raised €112.00 on the day, and in the absence of our Captain, Dana also presented the prize-winners with their well-earned prizes. Our next fixture is Thursday, 28th May at Hacienda Riquelme and the list is nearly full, so if you wish to play, pop into Alfie’s Bar and get your name on the list, or give our secretary Sandie an email on: alfiesgolfsociety@gmail.com
LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY Summer has suddenly arrived and it was warm humid conditions for our first game of the week on Monday which was a Texas Scramble. The warm weather hasn't slowed Lindsay Forbes down however as he led his team together with Alan Douglas and Mike Green to a gross 63 (net 57.4) to win by over 4 shots. The unlucky runners up on 61.6 were Tom Hardie, Olga Douglas and Ulrike Barth. On Wednesday it was the fifth round of our Medal Championship with points gained from the best 4 of 6 rounds counting to determine who becomes champion. Six points are available for first place down to 2 points for fifth in both Gents and Ladies divisions. Conditions were good and this was reflected in the scores particularly in Category Two with Marleen Billen coming in with an incredible net 65. Prizes were available on the day for the top three in each category as normal. The

CAFE UNO GS By Steve Lawrence. The Society played at Altorreal Murcia. It was a glorious day and the course was in superb condition. It was a shame that many of our players were unable to make it. Winners were as follows:Only one category today. 1st G.Pope - 37pts.2nd D.Stewart - 31pts. 3rd A.Atkinson - 29pts. c/b. Front 9 - S.Hamilton - 18pts. Back 9 - J.Pedersen - 16pts. PEDRENO TAKES ON TORRY REBUILD JOB LA NUCIA ....................0 CD TORREVIEJA ..........1 Torry will be delighted that they are retaining the services of manager Pedreno for next season. The announcement was made by the President last week. This comes on the back of excellent results since his arrival at the club. His Torry record since the opening day 6-1 trouncing of Acero in late March, reads won 4, drawn 4, lost 1. One player who will not feature under Pedreno next season though is Ferran, who has decided to join Icelandic club UMF Leikner. In the reverse fixture with La Nucia, played just before Xmas, Torry edged the visitors at the Nelson Mandela Stadium. Unfortunately, though, the game will be remembered for the bad injury to Sergio, which has seen him sidelined for the remainder of the current season. La Nucia have struggled since losing that game and are now 3rd to bottom in div 3, already condemned to relegation to Preferente football next season. With Torry's faint hopes of play off aspirations also scuppered, following last week’s home draw, it rested with Cesar (9) and Rafa (9), both currently fighting it out for the honour of being top goal scorer, to restore some pride to the team in an otherwise meaningless match and in the early stages it was not only they who struggled. With the absence of Jorge, Alexis and Cristian, all suspended, the visiting defence looked dire as the home side worked up 3 good attacks in the opening minutes of the game. Three decent shots and three dangerous corners but, thankfully, that was as close as they got. It was an awful start from CD Torrevieja. La Nucia’s Anton went close with a near post header on 7 minutes and Oscar kept out what appeared to be a certain goal moments later. Indeed it was a full 17 minutes before Torry had their first attempt on goal, a well worked move that ended with a Rafa half volley that just shaved the upright of La Nucia’s goal.
Another magnificent save was called for by Oscar midway through the half from Corella as the keeper parried to Adrian who cleared the ball upfield. Spurred on by their good fortune, Torry pushed forward, but were able to create little of note in open play despite the best efforts of Rafa, who saw plenty of the ball and had two late efforts comfortably saved by Dani, and as the half time whistle came at least they were now well and truly back in the game. On a warm sunny afternoon it was bizarre to see the ball regularly coming to a halt in deep puddles as the second half got underway. Overwatering the artificial pitch by the groundsman during the interval was probably just a mistake rather than a tactical ploy by the home side. It certainly backfires as Torry picked up the pace. However Torry started the 2nd period in positive fashion with foward Rafa blasting a long-range drive just over dani’s crossbar with two minutes gone. But they enjoyed a major escape on the break when Oscar needlessly gave the ball away. Fortunately he redeemed himself moments later with a fine save from Corella. They were a much better unit as the game wore on and they deservedly took the lead on the hour mark, with Rafa again involved in the move. It was his fierce effort that the keeper pushed round the post for a corner from which the big forward rose above the La Nucia defence to score his 10th goal of the year as he continues his battle with Cesar to finish as the club’s leading scorer. Thereafter Torry controlled the game offering little to the, already relegated home side. Next week the final game of the season at home to Alzira with the club hoping for a bumper crowd with all of the players looking for new contracts. Could be quite a game.

Playa Serena – Roquetas de Mar Back to the Serena Club for a second year for three consecutive days of golf. 331 meters longer than Colinas the course is a real challenge with water, trees and intimidating out of bounds. The Serena staff were helpful and accommodating as usual and after the three days of competition we held our gala dinner and prize presentation at our tour location, the Hesperia Sabinal hotel. Even though the “Ball Room” appeared to be smaller this year music played, wine flowed and tales were told in a convivial atmosphere courtesy of our event organisers, Bryan Hirst & David Pope. There were prizes for all the contestants, and some wives, with the podium places going to :- 4th Brian Layden (85 pts), 3rd Ray Phillips (89), 2nd Dave Margetson (91) This years champion, also on 91 points and after a count back, Captain Geoff Hollingsworth
Our latest competition was held at Altorreal Golf Course which we hadn’t played as a society for a while as members thought the course was a little ‘tired’ What a transformation is taking place. The new owners are obviously investing in the course and the improvements already made are very obvious and the lush green course was a delight to play. The main Stableford competition of the day also housed four matches from the Annual Knockout competition. Congratulations to those that

ABBEY ANGLING MATCH RESULTS Report by A Reid The Eighth Round of the Spring Series was fished at the Embalse Argos. This is one of the better venues for match fishing as the weights below will testify, but as with all of the better venues there’s a price to pay and that is the distance we have to travel, around 135 km about 1.5 hours travelling time each way. Top weight on this visit came from peg Nº 1 Bill Reade. 1st : - Bill Reade with a weight of 47.260 kgs. fishing paste on the pole. 2nd : - Doug Hornblow with a weight of 46.58 kgs. fishing corn on the feeder. 3rd : - Lenny Bolton with a weight 39.880kgs. fishing paste on the pole. All details are available from our website www.abbeyangling.com or from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 965 32 8368. New members are welcome. RODS & REELS - The 3rd round of the Summer Series was fished at Embalse Argos on the 6th of May. The fishing at this venue is excellent, but anglers are reluctant to travel there because of the distance involved.
