THE END OF AN ERA FOR ORIHUELA

STAFF REPORTER As a unique chapter in the history of Orihuela is about to come to a close, it is a time of reflection for those who will be leaving the political battlefield. Whereas some of those staying may well find themselves ousted by a new wave of politicians, there are many who are voluntarily moving away from the front line, as is the case for the current Mayor of the municipality, Monserrate Guillén Sáez, who has opted not to

stand for re-election after four years at the helm. Having fought for the environmental concerns of his hometown of Torremendo, Guillén was already seen as a key player before becoming a full time politician. With his later, more vocal, concerns about the mismanagement of the municipality under the Partido Popular, upon becoming Mayor four years ago, it was inevitable that both those key factors would carry him through this term, the time that Orihuela was not governed by the PP. Continued From Page One Summing up his time as the head of a minority government rocked with its own turmoil, facing two attempts at a political overthrow and experiencing a near fatal heart attack in the process, Guillén is adamant that for him, he has achieved exactly what he intended, as his “stability plan has now been fulfilled”. Guillén himself has reflected on his time at the head of a municipality that had become historically implicated in corruption and scandal, and facing a much needed cleanup, Guillén admits, “I knew it would be very difficult and complicated”, knowledge learnt during his previous eight years as an opposition councillor facing former Mayor, Mónica Lorente. It was upon taking to power that Guillén became more aware of the reality of what he was taking over, as he explained, “we found 30 million euro in drawers, yet the electricity and telephones were cut, there was no fuel to put the police on the streets, it was on that day you realise things had to be done differently. We paid a lot, not only euro 21,500,000 in adjustments, euro 8,500,000 in court cases, which we paid regardless of sentences, plus a whole day clearing outstanding invoices. Today we have sufficient liquidity.” It is also now that things are done differently, with far more control and management than ever before. That itself is not without difficulty, as Guillén explains, “We may have other problems such as the financial controller to put things in place and tell us how to do it. That costs us but the situation occurred because of a lack of specialized staff in different departments”, largely due to the PP´s obsession with “ensuring votes”, rather than doing the job that was needed. Whilst governing in a minority it was extremely difficult to achieve much by means of voting in the plenary sessions, as the majority opposition would mostly object to any motion tabled, irrespective of the value present-

Monday, 18th May, 2015 ed, and facing enforced austerity measures by the central government keen to cap the previous lavish overspend . Guillén admits that, “we were unable to make investments, at least not many”, especially given that “revenues were between 30 and 40% lower than previous years. I do not want to make excuses for the management, but we must take into account other difficulties. It is one thing is to have a corporation that does not support you, but at least do not attempt to torpedo everything you do, and that is what we have had.” Despite the attempts of the coalition to make change, faced with such opposition, Guillén claims that “at the end we have seen what it was. A PP dismembered which was to serve their own interests, with people leaving their party, a totally dismembered CLR, and yet, the PSOE and Los Verdes are in the same place”. With so much corruption seen throughout recent years, and despite his decision to not stand again, Guillén for one has not lost faith in the political system, “No, it´s not politics. I've spent my whole life in policy and politics, and it can be a very nice word when performed honourably.” But if it´s not politics that´s the problem, then it must be something else, “Yes, politicians”, he believes, not all of them, but “when they focus on their own purposes and do not consider the people they represent”, that “is

despicable.” Guillén also believes that with the recent history of mismanagement, having lost the last elections, the PP simply “never wanted to fix it”. He says that “We were very clear that Orihuela needed four years of tranquillity”, away from corruption, as “Orihuela needed those four years and I knew it was the only chance to get this town clean. That has conditioned us all because it would have been easy to leave, but it was worth it and that's what we tried”, but not only that, what the current government has done has been “very important”, because “we can leave it clean and in the honour of those who have ruled.” When faced with critics who say that the last four years resulted in a cessation of growth and advancement of the municipality, Guillén admits that in terms of lack of investment, it is true, but during the last four years, “we have ensured that the model of political corruption no longer exists” and they have not been idle. Faced with ensuring a continuity of services with less money and problems that sometimes occur, “if the streets are not clean enough one day the next day they are, we have not had the eco parque I wanted, that is true. But if the government can open drawers and see that no hidden bills, if there is aren´t any unpleasant surprises, if there is some liquidity”, as is the case in the end of this term, then “we have achieved a lot in just four years.”

ELCHE STUDENTS TO RACE ECO CAR IN ROTTERDAM

Students from Elche University (UHM) were showing off their new Eco car last Tuesday, the 'Datil 15', which they will be entering into the Shell Eco-Marathon this coming weekend on a Rotterdam street circuit. The car is much lighter, has a much improved engine and a boasts a much lower fuel consumption than earlier models. The professor of Mechanical Engineering and Energy of the UMH, Miguel Angel Oliva, said that they fully expect the vehicle to achieve a distance of 2000 km on just one litre of ethanol, a vast improvement on last year’s best attempt which was recorded as 1156km. The car has been built by eight students from the Polytechnic School of Elche, over a nine month period, with the process coordinated by professor Oliva and researcher David Abellan. It is a rebuild of an earlier prototype, weighing just 28kg it is 30% lighter, it features an innotavive front steering arrangement and is 40% more aerodynamically efficient. The total cost of the vehicle is said to be just 6000 euros. The car measures 2.85 metres in length, it is 60 centimeters wide and 50 centimeters high. It is one of the smallest models in its category with a new design that greatly reduces the possibility of tipping, something very important on a street circuit with sharp curves and bends explained Javier Martínez,

one of the students participating in the project. He also explained that the model has a number of other new features such as an aluminum chassis with carbon fibre cover and improvements in the fourstroke engine. In last year's race 'Datil' was ranked third among the vehicles using ethanol as fuel. With the improvements made to the new model the team expects to beat the mark of 2,000 kilometers per litre of fuel and win the category. The competition serves as a platform for students to test vehicles that they have designed and built themselves as they are challenged to drive as far as possible on the equivalent of 1 kWh or 1 litre of fuel. It marks thirty years of technological innovation, outstanding achievements and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, a significant milestone in what is one of the most challenging engineering student competitions, Shell Eco-marathon Europe. This unique event brings together around 200 teams and 3,000 students from across Europe to battle for ultra energy efficiency on the road. The event also features the Shell Energy Lab, packed with attractions around innovation and the future of energy. In 2015, Shell Eco-marathon Europe celebrates its 30th anniversary. The competition takes place from May 21-24, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

SMEAR CAMPAIGN FACEBOOK users in Valencia could face fines or even criminal charges over comments on a page aimed at denouncing what they consider to be arrogant and noncommunity spirited behaviour on the part of the city's police force. the site, Abusos de la Policía Local de Valencia, has been on Facebook since 2011 and exposes frownedupon and borderline illegal attitudes by officers. Local Police reported the page to the council and are pushing for legal action against the page administrators and members.

RECLINING CHARGE Seven hospitals in Catalonia are charging relatives of sick people five euros to use reclining armchairs. One of the seven hospitals, the Hospital de Granollers, has installed 96 reclining armchairs in its 300 rooms and if visitors want to lie down, they have to pay five euros for the privilege of fully reclining the armchair. Special payment machines sell cards which are used to work the chairs and family members can buy tickets per night or in a five night block for €20 in the pilot scheme. Angry relatives have complained that the chairs discriminate against those who cannot afford to pay to use them.

CANCER SUFFERERS BATHE WITH ELCHE SEA LIONS In a pioneering procedure developed using the facilities at Elche’s Rio Safari, forty women affected by breast cancer have been benefitting from therapy with sea lions. The beneficiaries are all members of the Elche Association of Women Affected by Breast Cancer (Amacmec) and so far they have attended the centre’s therapeutic baths on seven occasions, with each of the visits supervised by therapists and trainers. A spokesperson for the project said that the main objective is to reduce the negative psychological symptoms, such as depression and anxiety, from which those affected by the disease inevitably suffer. It also aims to improve other lifestyle aspects such as self-esteem and image as well as quality of life and emotional well-being. Participants were divided into small groups of five to six women per session. On many occasions they were accompanied by their children or their partners who were also able to benefit from the treatment. Each session was divided into three phases: socializa-

tion, relaxation and interaction with the sea lions, allowing the participants to play and carry out relaxation exercises with the mammals, either individually or as a group. The therapies are adjusted to meet the needs of the individual patients. To enable this to happen the therapist receives information on the characteristics of each participant which allows them to focus the therapy on their individual needs According to a Rio Safari occupational therapist with the Maria Galvañ Foundation, the sea lion is a "docile" animal that responds very well to interaction with humans. "It is a very motivating and innovative therapeutic tool

that gets extremely beneficial results" all of which help these women to "improve their emotional well-being while they are having fun and by also raising lots of smiles."

NAVY PATROL SIEZES 40 KILOS OF DRUGS OFF ALICANTE According to a statement issued by the Department of Defence last week, the Spanish Naval Fisheries Patrol Vessel Arnomendi, based in Cartagena, has intercepted a fishing trawler, seven miles from the port of Alicante, on which they discovered between 30 and 40 kilos of "an alleged drug, apparently hashish". Based in Villajoyosa, the trawler was crewed by four men, all of Spanish Nationality. The Arnomendi has been employed as a fisheries inspection and protection vessel since last April 27. It carried out the interception on Tuesday morning and following discovery of the drugs it escorted the trawler, Sana, to Alicante where the boat and its crew were handed over to the authorities.

HOW TO VOTE IN ORIHUELA ’S MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS Voting day on 24 May is fast approaching. Those who are registered to vote should be receiving by post voting cards which confirm that they are on the voters list and informing them at which polling station and at which voting table (mesa) they should vote. There are three polling stations in Orihuela Costa (in the Playa Flamenca Town Hall, the Alameda del Mar Civic Centre and the Reading Point in Calle Cipress, (just behind Aldi) Lomas de Cabo Roig. They cover broadly the following areas respectively: Before voting it is important to know How to Vote because in Spain it is not the same as in other countries and not the same as in the UK. In Spain, voters vote for a party list and the candidates on the list will be elected in strict proportion to the number of votes cast for that party – provided the party receives at least 5% of the total votes cast. Voting consists of going to the polling station specified by your address, WITH IDENTIFICATION, (usually a passport for non-Spanish voters) and choosing a ballot form with the name of the party you wish to vote for and its candidates already printed on the form. These ballot forms or voting lists are available in the voting booths in the polling stations, together with the official envelopes into which the voters list should be placed. Having decided which party to vote for and therefore which list to choose, the voter is simply required to put the voting list in an official envelope, WITHOUT MARKING IT IN ANY WAY and then to place it in the ballot box. Resist the temptation to put a cross or mark on the voting list before placing it in the official envelope. ANY CROSS, TICK OR MARK ON THE VOTING

LIST WILL RESULT IN THE BALLOT BEING DECLARED INVALID To complete the act of voting, place the envelope containing the voting list in the ballot box at the appropriate voting table which is indicated according to the alphabetical order of your name and distinguishes between Spanish and non-Spanish voters. The Spanish voters will also be voting in elections for the Valencia regional assembly on the same day, which non-Spanish residents are not eligible to participate in. At the voting table, an official will check your identity and verify that you are on the voting list. Officially approved versions of the voting lists are also being distributed by the parties contesting the election, sometimes together with the official envelopes. It is quite legitimate to use these lists and envelopes rather than the ones available in the voting booths. If you voted in previous municipal elections you definitely registered to vote this time. Also if you have applied to go on the voters list at the Town Hall or returned the prepaid form to go on the voters list you can

vote. If you have not received a voting card, you can still vote. It may simply be due to a postal error. You should go to the polling station allocated for your area with identity and ask for the voting list to be checked to see if you name is included. There are officials at the entry to the polling stations who will check the official list of voters for you. If you happen to go to the wrong polling station, you will be directed to the right one. If you have to go to this extra trouble, do not be discouraged, your vote is important and may make all the difference to the final result.

ROYAL GIFT The woollen bonnet worn by Princess Charlotte as she made her public debut was a gift from the Spanish mother of the Cambridge's nanny. New parents rushed to copy her look. But Kensington Palace declined to say where the bonnet had come from. It has now emerged that the item was a gift from the mother of Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, the Duchess of Cambridge's livein Spanish nanny As well as the bonnet, purchased from a boutique in San Sebastian, she also purchased several other pieces, including a coat, shoes, pram cover and mattress. The tiny clothes were sent to London around a month and a half ago.

When guards opened the bag, the boy emerged from the suitcase s, saying that his name was Abou, he was eight years old and from the Ivory Coast. The woman, a Moroccan national, was arrested. A Guardia Civil spokesperson said the boy was in a terrible state.

COURTS SUSPENDED DUE T O FAULTY AIRCON Staff in the Orihuela courts have for years been demanding the replacement of the inadequate air conditioning system in the building that they occupy in la Plaza Santa Lucía. Judges, magistrates and clerks continually complain to the authorities about the system’s deficiencies and with the onset of higher than average temperatures, which will undoubtedly increase even more in the coming weeks, and following a meeting of the Magistrates Board a petition has been submitted to the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), expressing their dissatisfaction. The Leader newspaper has reported similar problems with the system in both 2013 and 2014but the staff say they are no further forward. The air-conditioning is totally ineffective and neither are the staff able to open windows so it is not possible. The situation became so bad that the Dean of the court, Judge Joaquina de la Peña, suspended all activity in the building for 2 days last week due to high temperatures as Health and Safety law requires that work be abandoned should the temperature exceed 27 degrees C He said that officials working on the second floor of the buildingand 4 are the most badly affected as they have been without any form of ventilation system for over six months. Last year the solution was to bring in 4 large mobile

aircon units from the Department of Justice. But even they are nowhere near satisfactory as, whilst the units are in operation, the extraction hose needs to be vented through an open window, as a result of which the hot air just flows back in. Added to this is the excessive noise of the devices, so much so that some of the office staff have chosen to switch them off rather than suffer. One worker said that even when they are operating on full power the cool air hardly gets beyond the immediate area of the aircon unit itself. Many of the staff have taken the matter into their own hands by bringing in their own electric fans. But by early afternoon the temperature is still stifling with thermometers exceeding thirty degrees.

MEN THE VICTIMS IN SPAIN According to a new book published by Professor José Muñoz Clares and five of his law students at Murcia University, 69 % of the victims of homicides and murders committed in Spain are men, with women accounting for the remaining 31 percent. However when it comes to the perpetrators of those crimes women commit only 7% with men accounting for the remainder. Knives, razors and other sharp instruments are used in 53% of all cases while just 15% of all murders are committed using fists, hands or feet. Most of the deaths, over 60%, occur at night, with

the remainder being committed during daylight hours or in the very early evening. Of the 370 sample cases that were tried during the past year, 218 murders took place Monday to Friday and the rest, 152, at the weekend. The book, edited by Diego Marin, also deals with cases of suicide, which is the leading cause of violent death in Spain, accounting for 7.6 per cent per 100,000 inhabitants.

POST UK ELECTION BOOST FOR SPANISH PROPERTY

Brits buying an overseas home benefited immediately from the election of the Conservatives to power last week, with the news causing Sterling to bounce back against major currencies and a positive reaction in the UK property market. “Homes in the Eurozone and USA got cheaper again for UK buyers during Friday, as the City realised the Tories would gain power with a majority and Sterling rebounded against the euro and dollar,” said Elaine Ferguson, Head of the Resource Centre at OverseasGuidesCompany.com. “And speaking to people at the A Place in the Sun Live exhibition in London over the weekend, where we received record levels of enquiries for buying property abroad, many people seemed reassured by the election result and were confident about proceeding with their property purchase knowing the UK economy is in a position to maintain growth. The state of the property market affects practically

anyone moving abroad and selling their UK home, so the continuing stability and ongoing house price growth that the new government should bring will benefit these people. “Looking closer at the A Place in the Sun Live exhibition, unsurprisingly Spain appeared to be the most popular destination amongst property-hunters, with France, Portugal, Italy and Florida also favoured. This reflects the findings from our latest Quarterly Index, which shows Spain attracting the highest number of enquiries from prospective buyers across all popular destinations in Q1 2015 and a general uplift in the international property market compared with last year. The exchange rate was also a key topic of conversation at the exhibition, especially given how the rate had moved on the Friday, and shows a growing awareness amongst buyers to send funds overseas in the most efficient way.”

WELCOME HOME Sephardic Jews have now been told that WHEN Spanish lawmakers finally enact a law entitling them to citizenship, if they wish to become Spanish residents they must learn and be tested in basic Spanish if they don't speak one of several Jewish languages rooted in Spanish. They also must pass a current events and culture test about Spain. And they have to establish a modernday link to Spain, donate to a Spanish charity or buy a Spanish property.

BEACH REPAIRS The investment also included the purchase of two 135 hp tractors that have been procured to replace existing equipment which will be used to clean beaches and support general maintenance and landscaping tasks. There are also two new rubbish collection trucks, which will be introduced into service at the beginning of the summer. The procurement of the new equipment will not only modernize the service but it will improve the image and the environmental quality of the town and it will also save money for taxpayers. A municipal spokesman told the Leader that much of the equipment replaced was totally obsolete. Most of the vehicles were over 15 years old and the continually generated heavy expense due to ongoing repairs and service deficiencies. They were very old vehicles, 37 years in the case of one of the tractors, and they were achieving only limited benefits. He said that keeping the city clean and preserving and maintaining the dunes and the other natural areas is absolutely essential if the area is to continue to thrive as a tourist destination. Over a hundred new recycling containers have also been recently obtained by Guardamar bringing the total to over 600 waste disposal containers now distributed across the municipality,

The Department of the Environment has begun to regenerate the town's beaches in Torre de la Horadada following last month’s storms, and in advance of the forthcoming holiday season.. So far they have distributed more than 4,000 cubic meters of new sand with a further 9,000 cubic metres to come. Mayor, Fidel Ros, said that they have this problem every year; there is always a steady loss of sand which needs the Department to carry out a comprehensive regeneration scheme for the coast.

GUARDAMAR BEACH PROPERTIES Guardamar’s Socialist candidate for mayor, José Luis Sáez, is again warning of the safety issues surrounding the state of several properties situated on la Playa Babilonia. We will programme activities in several languages in accordance with the needs of the people of the town. Visits to the various museums of the town will be stimulated and the opening hours revised, above all in the holiday periods. The book resources will be augmented in the different libraries. The opening hours of the library will be extended during examination time. Open air activities will be scheduled in spaces such as the “Malecón del Soto”, “Plaza Blanca” and “Cuevas del Rodeo”.

INTRODUCING CLARO There are ten Expat Candidates on the CLARO list. Here is Part Two of a short introduction to each of them PAUL PICCIO Paul Piccio Hernandez has had a truly international upbringing and has studied, lived and worked in three continents. He finished his Secondary school in New York City and has a degree in International Relations from State University of New York. He finished his Masters Degree in Public Management from Potsdam University in Germany; hence he is fluent in English, Spanish and German. He has been in Spain since 2002 and now has Spanish Citizenship. His interest in politics was rekindled because of his work in PSI Consultants. When helping European residents, he realized that the Local Government was not up to the job in providing services to the community. It took a long time (and for some it took years) for new businesses to get their opening licenses from the local town hall and new residents were given the run around on their application for residencies, NIEs and other paperwork that becomes a hurdle to overcome when normally it should be an easy, straightforward process. He is hoping that the next Local Government will be more sensitive to the needs of the European residents in Orihuela and Orihuela Costa. JIMMY BADAL Jimmy Badal is a British National born in Iran, formerly 'Persia'. He grew up in the predominantly British environment at the BP oil company where his father worked as a civil engineer. He went to England at the age of 15 attending boarding school before going on to University College London for a five

year degree in architecture. His professional years were in Practices in London with a 4 year spell in Tehran and a 6 year spell in Saudi Arabia. Highlights of his career as 'Project Architect' was the American school in Tehran for 5,000 students, a Public Library building in Riyhad housing 3/4 million books and a specialist Hospital for the treatment of childhood Leukaemia in Riyhad. Jimmy and his Danish born wife retired to Orihuela Costa in 2,000. He states that Orihuela Costa is a lovely place to live, however it needs serious political reforms, considerable investment and a fair distribution of the budget. He states that C.L.A.R.O is the only party advocating for Orihuela Costa. BERNADETTE CLARKE Bernadette was born in Dublin and moved to Birmingham at the age of 13. When she was 17 she joined the Red Cross, travelling and serving in several locations throughout Africa, Pakistan and India. Upon returning to the England she had many jobs before becoming the manager of several public houses in the greater Birmingham area. She returned to Dublin for 6 years to care for her dependent mother and after her death she retired to Orihuela Costa 14 years ago. Her interests in local politics developed due to the problems observed on Orihuela Costa, especially with regards to cleanliness. She states that it is time for truth, honesty and an end to corruption in local politics and feels that C.L.A.R.O is the only party that clearly states these basic principles. Bernadette states that it is time for a change for Orihuela Costa, it needs a fair share of the budget and that the needs of its inhabitants are appreciated and met. PAULINA WYSOKINSKA Paulina Wysokinska originates from Waszawa, Poland but immigrat-

ed to Spain 12 years ago to enjoy a better life style for herself and her family in a country with a sunny climate. Paulina works in insurance and as a Community Administrator where her language skills in English, Spanish, Polish and Russian are in high demand. She became involved in local politics and C.L.A.R.O due to the poor school facilities offered in Orihuela Costa and the lack of facilities for children and families. She firmly believes that children are the future of any community and that school and amenities should be available to ensure that children have positive educational opportunities. Her number one priority is that the coast receives a fair budget and has all the proper services to meet the needs of its varied population. PATRICIA HAMER Patricia Hamer lived in Oxfordshire working for the DHSS before retiring and moving to Spain in 2006 due to a health scare. She has been involved in local politics and C.L.A.R.O for many years and has worked hard to increase the participation of the non Spanish population in local politics. She is very concerned with the local environment and feels very strongly about the neglect she sees throughout Orihuela Costa, especially with regard to street cleanliness, the poor state of repair of the roads, and the neglect of parks and gardens. She feels that the town hall shows no concern to the state of the neglect within the various urbanisations and asks “Why do we pay local taxes when nothing gets done?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor, When I read the resignation letter of Mr. Stefan Pokroppa from the Partido Popular (PP) party I was very surprised on the irony of it all. First of all how can Mr. Pokroppa be a member of the Partido Popular "since 31 October 2004" when he was a founding Member of CLARO party in the year 2006 and he was elected Vice President of the CLARO party that same year? He resigned from CLARO only a few months before the local elections of year 2007 and CLARO does not allow anyone to be a member of the party if you are already a member of another political party. I suppose that is the same for all the other political parties. It seems that he hid his affiliation with the PP during that time and I believe it is just not morally correct to be in two political parties at the same time. Second, the reason behind the resignation from the PP of Mr. Pokroppa is that he was "shocked and distressed to find that in every city in the province no foreigners were placed in good positions on the various lists". Therefore, I was aghast and shocked to see his photo supporting the CIUDADANOS when this very party has NO EUROPEAN CANDIDATES on their list of candidates!! Even the PP has one on its list although way down in its list. Thus, it is with GREAT IRONY that a person advocating for the inclusion of European Residents in good positions in the candidate lists of Political parties is in one which does not account the high percentage of European Residents especially in Orihuela and its coast. If you practice what you preach then I believe Mr. Pokroppa should be supporting CLARO because we have 10 EUROPEAN CANDIDATES on our list and well placed in good positions in our line up. Regards, Paul Piccio Hernandez Candidate of CLARO for the coming local elections

REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN SPANISH LICENSE PLATES & REGISTRATION DOCUMENT

Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you maybe exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process which you can do online at www.eurococ.eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. STEP 5: OBTAINING THE SPANISH EQUIVALENT OF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. NEW UE DIRECTIVE MEANS NO ESCAPE FROM FINES

A new European law is about to come into force which allows foreign drivers who commit traffic offences in other countries to be sanctioned for the offences, or face legal proceedings in any member state country. The European Council has adopted a policy for cross-border exchange of information on traffic offences, which must be implemented in most countries across the continent no later than the 6th of May, with the exception of the UK, Ireland and Denmark who have been given a two year extension on implementation. Under the new policy, the exchange of data covers eight traffic offences: speeding, not wearing seat a seatbelt, failure to stop at a red light, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs, not wearing a helmet, driving in a forbidden lane, and illegally using a mobile phone or any other communication devices while driving. Currently there is no mechanism in place to force foreigners to pay fines in none resident countries by means of restraint or seizure, but the change will ensure that there is no escaping the law, or the fines. In Spain, the DGT has been working on implementing a new policy to satisfy the obligation. Together with the administrative proceedings that can be launched against drivers, criminal liability will also be ensured. Travelling at a speed excessively higher than that which is permitted on the road amplifies cases beyond administrative sanctions and it becomes a criminal matter, punishable with imprisonment, withdrawal of license, community service and a fine. A driver who has committed an offence of this type can no longer ignore the criminal liability of legal proceedings being opened. The new directive on cross-border data exchange is a replica of the policy adopted in 2011 by the EU ensuring police cooperation as a legal basis, but the directive was annulled by the courts in 2014, giv-

ing a year for a new legal framework to be implemented. The objective of the new policy remains the same as before, to improve road safety and to ensure equal treatment of all drivers. Ford Anglia Delux Under the new rules, member states can access national vehicle registration data from other countries in order to find those responsible for certain offenses that put road safety at risk. The alleged offender may be contacted with a sample letter included in the policy, but that depends on the member state where the offence took place, as each country has autonomy in deciding to decide how to process the sanctions. Currently, the legislation does not allow states to enforce payment of fines in the event of a driver being resident abroad, but the new directive means that the fine can be collected and judicial proceedings can be opened wherever they live and in whichever country to offence was committed.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

GO 0N, UNZIP A BANANA! I was chatting to a banana grower friend the other day. He was very concerned, because the banana growers of the Canary Islands have recently threatened industrial action. They feel undervalued and underpaid, and they are concerned that with cheaper imports entering the European Union from other countries, their livelihoods are being threatened. Despite the islands’ tourism industry, the growing of fruit and vegetables, and particularly the banana, remain an essential part of the Canary Islands’ economy, which should not be underestimated. Many visitors comment about the fields of polythene sheeting that adorn the sides of many roads in the Canary Islands. As well as protecting soft fruit and vegetables, many such structures shelter bananas from the ravages of the strong Atlantic winds. Our garden is surrounded by several very large and impressive banana plants that brush noisily against the wall in strong winds, which reminds me of the importance of the banana to these islands. I am a great fan of the humble banana, particularly if it is the traditional Canarian variety, as opposed to those huge, tasteless, perfectly shaped objects usually found in most UK supermarkets. The Canarian banana is well worth searching out, and some of the better UK supermarkets now stock them. Although smaller in size, they are full of

flavour and are much sweeter and creamier than the imported bananas from the Caribbean, which are often picked too early, artificially ripened and sprayed with gas to control the ripening process. I am always surprised that bananas are not more popular; after all, they are nature’s energy bar, which is far better for you than one of those expensive sports drinks. Although maybe not as ‘cool’ as a heavily advertised ‘sports drink’, one medium sized banana contains around ten per cent of the daily potassium intake that most adults need. These fresh, creamy fruits from the Canary Islands are cheap and readily available throughout the year. They are rich in calories, with 100 grams of fruit containing around 90 calories, as well as being rich in anti-oxidants, minerals and vitamins. Its flesh is made up of simple sugars, such as sucrose and fructose that instantly replenish the body, and is why they are so popular with athletes. The amount of soluble dietary fibre also means that it is good for the bowels, which means that you can avoid constipation by eating regular supplies of bananas. Now that really must be good news. This humble fruit also contains a generous helping of Vitamin B6, which helps to treat inflammation of the nerves and anaemia, as well as helping to prevent coronary artery disease and stroke. A portion of fruit also contains a dose of Vitamin C, which helps to ward off some of those nasty diseases, magnesium for strengthening bones, and copper for helping in the production of red blood cells. What’s not to like? In short, this wonderful fruit helps to combat depression, cures hang-

overs, helps to protect against kidney cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis and blindness. Bananas are the only raw fruit that can be eaten to relieve stomach ulcers, because they coat the lining of the stomach against corrosive acids. By the way, you can also rub a banana over a mosquito bite to sooth the pain and disinfect the wound and, if you really must, you can use one to clean your shoes. I wish the plants growing over my garden wall would hurry up and give me some fruit. SINGLE PARTY GOVERNMENT OR COALITION FOR ORIHUELA? BY RAY KEARNEY Before last week’s UK elections political commentators predicted that coalition governments were here to stay and single party government was a phenomenon of the past, the UK conservatives have proved all the commentators wrong. The predictions for Orihuela have been exactly the same in relation to coalition governments, the options seemed to be for there to be either a two party right-wing government or a rainbow left of three or four parties? With only 25 seats to fill commentators were convinced that no party would reach the magic figure of 13. Many believe that a strong single party government is needed to correct the devastation caused by the last left-wing coalition government. On the extreme communist left it is likely that either Cambiamos or Ganemos could achieve enough votes and win one seat. If all the communist parties had have joined forces under one banner they could have won as many as 3 seats but divided the maximum they can achieve is 1 seat. Pepa Ferrando’s Foro Demócrata is expected to win 2,500 votes and 2 seats but it is highly unlikely that any other party will want to tarnish their anti-corruption image by joining forces with them. Ciudadanos (C’s) have been openly spreading the rumour that the PP will join forces with her after the election. This is a highly unlikely scenario as the national PP would see it as a total breach of their anti-corruption policy and this would set the PP image back years and is an unthinkable backward step. Ciudadanos (C´s) have an up-and-coming image throughout Spain but in Orihuela this party is now being linked to businessmen of unclear intent. Up to when the lists were submitted and declared it was thought that C´s could get as many as 5 seats but in the last week it seems that they will be extremely lucky to achieve 3,000 votes and 2 seats. A very important factor in this election is that there are 13 different parties contesting the election. The extra parties taking part dilutes the vote for each of the other small parties. 200 votes given to a small

party like PRO or DLP helps eliminate a party like Claro or one of the communist parties. The electoral system used is very mathematical. It favours the large parties, gives seats to the medium sizes parties and eliminates the small parties. 8 of the 13 parties contesting the Orihuela election are small parties that will be eliminated because they will not be able to achieve the required 5% or an estimated minimum of 1,600 votes. The best known of these 8 parties that will be eliminated is Claro. All these votes (about 4,500) from these 8 eliminated parties will be binned but they still form part of the total vote cast in Orihuela. The PSOE should gain extra votes from the villages surrounding Orihuela because they put their supporters into key positions there but if their vote is lower 8,000 they will only receive 7 seats. If at the same time the PP can achieve more than 13,000 votes they could achieve 13 seats which will be an overall majority. The PP has publicly declared that no person charged with corruption can appear on their electoral lists. This will have a tremendous impact on 9,000 traditional PP supporters in Orihuela who voted for the PP in the national elections but not in the last local elections. The predicted number of voters is under 33,000 with blank and spoilt votes about 300. The results will likely be as follows: PP PSOE Ciudadanos Foro Demócrata Cambiamos or Ganemos

10 - 13 seats 7 - 8 seats 2 - 3 seats 1 - 2 seats 0 - 1 seat

NEW TASTIER TOMATOES DEVELOPED IN ALICANTE A group of researchers from the Polytechnic School of Orihuela, of the Miguel Hernández University (UMH), have embarked on a programme to develop new varieties of tomato that can bring back the taste and aroma of the older ones, with an added resistance to the Tomato Mosaic Virus (ToMV), the Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus (TYLCV) and the Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV). Work started in 1998, when UMH researchers launched a programme for the recovery of traditional varieties. According to the researcher Arantxa Alonso, the goal is to make classic tomato varieties, which were appreciated for their organoleptic characteristics (flavour, aroma and texture), once again available to consumers, while ensuring resistance to all viruses affecting the crop and making the process easier for growers to select and extract the seeds from their best plants.

ELCHE HOSPITAL SEES INCREASE IN NUMBER OF TRANSPLANTS

Elche General Hospital is one of the Valencian centers with the highest number of organ donations in the Region, 24 in the last year, leading to the center quickly establishing itself, particularly in the areas of kidney and cornea surgery The hospital first began performing kidney transplants three years ago in 2012, since when it has successful completed a total of 64, of which 23 were performed in the last year. The coordinator of the Transplant Unit, Maria Angeles Casillas, said “This is a particularly high number, considering that we only began the procedure recently. Indeed in the first year the hospital only managed to complete four interventions.” “This type of operation allows patients to recover a quality of life that many of them had previously lost when they became dependant on dialysis treatment. I have spoken to many patients about their daily life ‘before and after’ the procedure and they all give a very emotional testimony to the vast improvement in their lifestyles.” Cornea transplants are another practice that the General Hospital carries out, the implementation of which provides very good results and currently enjoys a healthy rate of donors, which is encouraging news for both those who have lost their vision and the surgeons. Of course there are always significantly more people waiting for an organ transplant than there are suitable donors and one of the roles of the staff in the Transplant Unit is making members of the public aware. In the environment in which they work they regularly come into contact with the families of deceased or dying patients who in such dramatic moments, are reminded that they are able to offer the possibility to other people of a second chance to live. Indeed the success of organ transplants in Spain is attributed mainly to the sensitive way in which these transplant coordinators approach the bereaved families. One member of the unit said that only about 15 percent of families approached in Spain refuse consent for organ donation, a huge drop from the 40 percent who refused in the 1980s and at many hospitals the refusal rate is nearly zero percent. Spain currently boasts 36 donors per million people — equal to 1,682 donors — "far superior" to the European Union figure of 19, health authorities said of figures released from 2014.

MONTE MAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB 10th ANNIVERSARY 2-10 MAY 2015 Saturday 2nd May Invitation: Monte Mar v TCBBA Provincial Team. This fixture was arranged as part of our celebration and features 6 rinks, 3 Ladies and 3 Men’s teams. On this occasion the Monte Mar Ladies beat the Provincial 2 rinks to 1 but the Men lost 2 rinks to 1, so the honours were shared. The Provincial narrowly won the shot difference though. The game was followed by a dinner in the Rincon Restaurant. Following the meal, and a few drinks, the results were announced and Monte Mar raised their glasses to our visitors. Each player on this occasion was given a specially created pin badge as a memento of them being part of our Anniversary Week. Sunday 3rd May Invitation Game: The Annual 4 Nations Tournament In this event 6 teams of rinks from the 4 Nations of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales compete for an overall trophy. The result is based on the total shots gained by each Nation throughout the full-days bowling. On this occasion the England Team won the trophy by attaining a total of 112 shots in their 6 games. Narrowly missing the total by only 3 were Scotland with 109 shots, followed by Ireland with 100 and Wales with 96.Brian Gardiner, the Captain of the Welsh Team presented Arthur Brown, Captain of the afternoon session for England, with the Trophy following a really very closely contested full days bowling. Tuesday 5th May Invitation Game: Monte Mar –v- CBBA President’s Team Again, as part of our celebrations, Monte Mar invited the CBBA President, Jean Cooper, to select a team from the CBBA area to play against Monte Mar. The format was 2 pairs; 2 trips and 2 rinks. After a good morning bowling Monte Mar won both the rinks games, one of the trips and one of the pairs. This gave Monte Mar a win of 4 games to 2 and the overall shots by 103 to 94.

Thursday 7th & Friday 8th May Special two-day event for Monte Mar Entry to this event was open to Bowlers, Social Members, ExMembers and Guests. In all 36 players took part. 12 Teams of 3 were selected and these competed in singles, pairs and trips games over the 2 days. Day 1 was from 10.30am until 4.45pm at which time the Club Owner provided a buffet for all the players and guests. After a second day of bowling under hot Spanish Sun a team emerged as winners. The team of Jan Soars, Wendy Oxley and Tony Finan won 5 of their 6 games and were declared winners. At 7.30pm on the Friday evening 65 club members and guests mustered in the El Rincon Restaurant for our Anniversary Party. Saturday 9th May Charity Fund Raiser and Cake & Bling Sale. Our bowls green was set out as a ‘fun course’ and players paid to our charity fund to ‘have a go’. Various targets and goals were set and each rink had a different challenge. After about 2? hours the sun and the drink took its toll and Barrie Woodfine was declared the winner of the trophy. 140€ was raised for charity. Sunday 10th May Final: The Chairman’s Team v The Captain’s Team. This is an annual event but it was staged this week to coincide with our Anniversary. After all the games were completed the Captain’s side had won 4 and the Chairman’s side 2. The Captain’s side had also won the overall shot difference and so was declared winner. Some of the non-playing Ladies had prepared a substantial buffet for us after the game . Our thanks again go to them. After the meal the Chairman’s wife, Barbara Farrelly, presented Club Captain, Chris Merry, with the trophy. That concluded ten days ‘full on’ bowling, drinking, partying, eating, more drinking, fund raising and even more drinking. We had hosted the 4 Nations; played against two invited sides; had two club competitions and had a fund raising day.

SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB

QUESADA BOWLS CLUB

By Pat McEwan The Opening Ceremony of the Spanish National Competition recently took place at San Luis Bowls Club. The event was poorly attended by both players and spectators, including San Miguel Bowls Club. A lot of organization goes into these competitions for which we must thank all who are involved. It was lovely to meet up with old friends and make new ones. Up to date (Friday) San Miguel have two teams who have reached the semifinals. The mens rinks, Cliff, Noel, Fred and Chris played well, but the ladies triples, Carol, Ann and Mary had a fantastic game against Greenlands. San Miguel were behind, and slowly but surely they started to pick up shots, going into the last end 17 across. After a nail biting time, we were down, when Mary Dyer came in with a superb shot and won the end. The games were played under extreme conditions with exceptionally high temperatures. Well done to both teams and good luck for the semis and finals which will take place at Quesada on Friday and Saturday - COME ALONG AND SUPPORT OUR PLAYERS, your support is really appreciated. Roll up mornings are still taking place, and don't forget the WASPS on Wednesdays, come along at 1.30 and have a game, price 5euros for bowls, shoes and tuition if needed. NEW MEMBERS ALWAYS WELCOME. Further information regarding San Miguel Bowls Club can be had from the President, Eileen Potts Tel. 966730376 or the Secretary, Pat McEwan Tel 966714257.

By Suzi Cooper With the Spanish Nationals being held at the moment there are no league results to report. Quesada is one of the two venues for the National Championships along with San Luis & matches are progressing according to the schedule despite extreme temperatures. We were well represented in the Pre Tournament. Carol Broomfield & Marianne Holtham went out in the quarter final, Mel Highland playing with Mac Roberts from the Costa del Sol lost out in the semi final & Jason Prokopowycz with Derek Sale were the eventual winners. Well done to them all. In the main event we have one Mens rinks team through to the semifinals, William Holtham, John Muldoon, Bill Pain & Pete Bonsor. They will play Ian Kenyons’ Vistabella team. In the Ladies Rinks we have a team in each semifinal. Peta Rhodes, Marianne Holtham, Jacqui Johnston & Lisa Bonsor who will play Lin Millers’ team from Greenlands. Norma Lamberton, Eve Blythe, Carol Broomfield & Diane Riley will play the Indalo team. In the Ladies Triples Peta Rhodes, Jacqui Johnston & Lisa Bonsor made it to the semi final & will play the San Miguel team led by Mary Dyer. The Mens Triples team of John Muldoon, Bill Pain & Pete Bonsor have also made the semi final. We would like to send best wishes to Averil Toozer & Maggie Furness who were both casualties of the heat while playing their rinks matches. We hope that both are now fully recovered. At least with the temperatures back down in the high 20s low 30s bowling will be more comfortable.

Q U ESA DA PAIR TAKE PRE NATIONALS 3-WOOD The Pre Nationals 3 Wood Pairs Event was played at San Luis and Quesada Bows Clubs last week with 36 teams competing for this popular new trophy. The first two days were played over a maximum of 90 minutes or 12 ends with the eight best placed teams progressing to the quarter finals on Day 3. Slightly surprising that neither of last year’s National Pairs winners took the opportunity to use the competition as a National warm up but spectators at the two venues were nevertheless rewarded with a number of exciting games which saw Jason Prokopowycz & Derek Sale, playing on home turf, achieve a narrow victory over Mary Lockley & Mike Edwards in the final. Prokopowycz, currently the Singles Champion at Quesada Bowls Club, and 2013 National Singles Runner Up, Sale, are also paired together in the Nationals

EL PIRATA GOLF SOCIETY – UP AND RUNNING

The golf society began life with a wanted poster, at the beginning of April, in the Bar El Pirata located in Quesada, close to the roundabout and a sand wedge away from the 18th hole. Since its conception we are pleased to announce that we have attracted over 50 members and seem to have golfers joining on a weekly basis. We are looking forward to our inaugural game which is scheduled for the 19th May, keeping it very local, at La Marquesa golf course. Other games have been arranged for the 16th June at Alenda Golf and the 21st July at Las Colinas. All the games have been priced at very reasonable rates. After each game we will meander back to the bar for the prize giving and generally chat of what might have been. Golfers are updated and informed of any news via our web site which seems to make for an enlightened happy crew. If you are interested in joining our happy crew please contact us by email atelpiratagolfsociety@outlook.com or by visiting the bar and leaving your mark and details on the sheet provided. Please try to avoid using an ‘X’ ,as we have so many of these that its becoming difficult to remember who they belong to

Greens Maintenance – The Necessary Evil We just entering that period of the year when the courses hollow tine the greens causing a disruption to golf and producing a poor putting surface for a few weeks but just why do they have to do this to us? The surface of a green, colour, density and speed is a combination of the maintenance of the surface but also, about the maintenance of the root-zone. A healthy grass starts from healthy roots. Soil compaction can be a severe problem resulting in restricted root growth, lack of water infiltration into the soil, loss of resilience, weed invasion, disease problems and decline in turf quality. Hollow Tining is used to prevent damage from an excessive soil compaction. It is also very important to provide the needed drainage, for water infiltration and aeration at the root-zone and is done during the warm season when temperatures favour rapid shoot growth and coverage of the turf openings. The use of sand on greens is essential because it helps to digest the organic matter, enhancing the aeration of the root-zone, speed on greens and better recovery from pitch marks. In order to minimize the disruption to golfers, hollow tinning is usually carried out in 2 consecutive journeys so that the 18 greens are aerated in the same week. The surface smoothness restoration process includes top dressing, drag matting and rolling and greens are normally puttable after 3 days with rolling putting surface within 10 days. There you have it…so when you next question the parentage of the green keepers you will understand the just a little more We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY AT LA MARQUESA

Last Wednesday the Society played the course on its doorstep “La Marquesa”. With a first tee-time of around 10.30 am there was no need to get out of bed too early. There was a big turn-out for this game with 40 players participating in an individual stableford competition split into two divisions and also the second round of the annual eclectic competition, which for 2015, is being held at La Marquesa. The course was in good condition and the playing conditions near perfect with sunshine and only a very light breeze. There were some good scores on the day. In the keenly contested Gold division, three of our members who play regularly at “Font De Lllop” took the honours. Playing golf more often has certainly paid dividends. In first place was John” Robin Hood” King with 35 points closely followed by Brighton boy Victor Dew with 34 points who just pipped chirpy chappie Roy Westlake on C/B. By all accounts Kingy had a big smile on his face when he had a the odd lucky break with a few wayward shots coming back into play off man made objects including a solar panel on a house roof, much to Roys frustration and a shake of the head . Thats golf. Well done John. In the Silver Division

Terry “Evening All” Smith returned to winning ways heading the leader board with 28 points followed by “Bonnie Scotsman” Sergio Spiers with 27 points and in third place our Welsh lassie Glenys Thomas. The best guest was Irishman Joe McCadden. There were winners originating from all corners of Britain. There were only 3 winners of the 6 “Nearest the Pins” up for grabs. These were Roy “Scouse” Kavanagh with two and Bill Acton with one. After the game the members returned to the society base, the Quesada Country Club for a bit of banter and the prize giving over a drink or two and a tasty buffet kindly provided by the new owners of the QCC to whom the society is extremly grateful.b There is a members meeting on Tuesday 19 May at the QCC starting at 11.00 am. The next game is at Roda on Wednesday 27 May. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the Membership Secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.

SAN JAVIER GOLF SOCIETY

A really good day out was had by the society with 20 members including guests, travelling up to Alicante San Juan for breakfast before an early start on the course. The sun was out and it was very warm, no wind and ideal conditions for good scores and this is just what we got. The Society played in 2 categories and Dave Archer scored a very good 39 points to take category 1, followed by Paul Matthews on 37 points and two players scored 36 so it was a high scoring game. The course was in great condition making it a delight to play and category 2 scoring was even better. New member Mark Pollitt scored a magnificent 42 points and 2nd place went to Jo Murphy with an excellent 40 points, again 3rd place was 36 points. The nearest the pin prizes were all won on the day by Frank Murphy, Barry Beale, Dave Archer and Darren Hancock and the 2's pot of 50 euros was won by Mark Pollitt. Congratulations to all winners for scoring so well and to every one else, including our guests who enjoyed the day. The Societys next game is on Wednesday 20th May at La Serena.

ROCKET’S GOLF SOCIETY MEDAL AT ALENDA GOLF COURSE On a very warm May morning we ventured along the AP7 to Monforte del Cid to the delightful Alenda Golf course, they are making some positive alterations to the course and giving it some TLC it is now one of the premier courses in the area. The greens in particular were a pleasure to putt on congratulations to Alenda’s greekeeping staff We welcomed back Ken Hopkins after injury and his scores emphasised the saying “Beware the injured golfer”. We also welcomed guest players and as always they are always welcome to play with Rockets. It certainly had no effect on the members, when the word Medal mentioned, as there was not one moan, so with the glorious sunshine and a lovely golf course it was perfect and some good golf was played. The best score of the day went to the Gold Category winner Ivie Davies with a Nett 73 RESULTS - GOLD CATEGORY - 1st: Ivie Davies Nett 73, 2nd: Seamus Martin Nett 75, 3rd: Ron Chambers Nett 78 SILVER CATEGORY - 1st: Ron Nicholson Nett 75, 2nd: Barney Hickey Nett 76, 3rd: Ken Hopkins Nett 77 NEAREST THE PINS - Hole 3: Andy Drinkall, Hole 5: Barney Hickey, Hole 15: Ivie Davies Longest Drive & Best Guest: Andy Drinkall The day’s golf was enhanced with Lynn’s Chips and Sarnies, thanks to Tony and Jackie at Izzy’s Bar. HAPPY DAYS GOLF SOCIETY On Tuesday 12th May the society went to the Roda Golf Course. The weather was perfect, clear skies, warm sunshine and no breeze to worry about. Combine this with the fact that the Roda course makes you think with its impressive layout the society, perhaps unfairly, decided to play an olds versus youngs game. At least one member tried to use his spiritual age rather than his chronological age, however it made no difference, the olds won, but only by a margin of 1 hole, the result was 4 to the olds and 3 to the youngs with 2 holes halved. On the day the play was fairly even with no-one really standing out. Robin Hanna got nearest the pin at hole 2, Danny Wheatly at hole 7, Fred Noakes at hole 11 and Andy Shuttle at hole 13. However, the day was a day just to prove Mark Twain wrong

By Lubbertus when he said “Golf is a good walk spoiled.” to simply enjoy the game, enjoy a wonderful course and enjoy each other’s company rather than be competitive. To further this spirit of sociability the Society is holding their annual dinner for members and guests on 30th May. Should you want to join Happy Days Golf Society as a member, or just for some golf playing, then contact Steve, or any member of the staff at the Marinasol Restaurant at Cabo Roig and they would be happy to talk to you. The next competition is on 26th May at Font De Lop Golf course, so please contact Steve for details. Because of the distance involved, if you need a seat on the minibus that day please speak to Steve or any member of staff at the Marinasol Restaurant.

CRISTIAN BRACE BRINGS SEASON TO A CLOSE CD TORREVIEJA ..........2 UD ALZIRA ...................2 Fans favourite Cristian bagged a brace in Torry's last game of a roller coaster season, that promised so much, but ultimately saw them finish in a disappointing 10th position. When Torry achieved an excellent 0-3 victory at Alzira in early Jan, everything seemed so rosy for the Salinas men, but a catastrophic slump in form, not only proved costly in terms of promotion, but it also cost manager Galiano his job. Enter Pedreno, who has completely rejuvenated a demoralised squad, giving skilful players like Cristian a chance to prove what he really can do. The game started with Alzira in the ascendancy, as Higon converting a cross from Francesc after only 11 mins, giving his side the lead. When on 40 mins, Palomares headed home a corner by Quique, it

looked as if the season would finish on a low note, but just before the interval, Brani crossed from the right for Cristian to fire home and reduce the arrears. With time ticking away, a well worked move involving Rafa, Cesar and Cristian, resulted in the latter scoring his 2nd, and Torry's equalising goal. Jorge was presented with Torry Army player of the season, and it will be interesting to see who wins the other awards on offer, at Tues nights end of season function. One note of interest, is that Oscar played in every minute of all 42 matches this season. Well done Oscar, you are a credit to your profession. TORRY LINE-UP. Oscar, Vicente, Jorge, Burguillos (Juanra), Edi, Cristian, Brani (Cesar), Borja, Berna, Rafa, Corella (Carrasco)

CD TORREVIEJA NEWS ROUNDUP On the 18th July we will be holding a “Bringa-Brush Painting Party” at the Vicente Garcia to give the club a bit of makeover. We are asking the community for two things - paint and people! We desperately need business or people to donate pots of white or blue paint to enable us to make the stadium look great for the start of next season - anyone who pledges to donate

paint we would like to thank in the newspaper next week. On the day, Hogs in the Costa will be providing a hog roast for volunteers and the club will be providing plenty of refreshments - we just need people to turn up with brushes, rollers, trays etc. People can pledge paint and confirm their intention to help by emailing cdtorreviejaoffi-

By Chris Darwen cial@gmail.com or calling 634 310 735. As part of his “El Trabajadores de Torrevieja” campaign, Chris Darwen has recruited Barrie Crawford as the club’s “Business & Community Development Manager”. Barrie will be fundamental to the growth of the club in the community and brings a wealth of experience and talent to the team.

LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY FOUNDERS TROPHY The Founders Trophy is a recent addition to our calendar but it holds a special place as it is sponsored by founder member, Barry Martin. As normal this was played as an individual Stableford but ‘blind pairs’ were drawn after the game to determine the winners. Alicante GC was the venue for this competition. The course is returning to its usual high standard and the greens were as difficult to read as always. The weather however, was another matter altogether. Unseasonably high temperatures were the order of the day with a number or members struggling with the heat and humidity. The overall scoring did not reflect the conditions and everybody is to be congratulated on completing the round especially Colin Yarnton returning to golf after ill health.. Prize giving took place at La Marina Sports & Social Centre after what is rapidly becoming a feature of our golf days, the buffet, supplied as always by Helena & Paolo. Results: Nearest the Pin: Hole 8Steve Warner, Hole 12 John Brastock, Hole 17 Bill England. Nearest the Pin in 2 shots: Hole 2 Graham Marriner. 3rd place 58 pts Sarah McCabe/Roger Honey 2nd place 59 pts Jimmy Scott/Alan Craig 1st place C/B59 pts Steve Warner/Bill England Our next completion is on Thursday May 28th at Roda GC. First tee time 10.16a.m. Our next social event is a Bingo Quiz to be held at La Marina Sports & Social Centre on Tuesday May 19th , 7.00p.m. for 7.30p.m. Contact Alan or Elspeth on 634 347788 for further information on either of these events.

THE MEMBERS GOLF SOCIETY AT LA FINCA 30 odd members and guest turned up for our monthly visit to this very popular venue. In recent months some improvements have been made to the course, especially the greens, the new green keeper has made a vast difference to them, not so many pitch marks and they are more receptive and the ball now rolls true. Another new change is that the pin position can now be identified by the colour of the flag, red for front, yellow for centre and white for back. Very helpful when you firing into the 18th green that just happens to be 50 + meters long! The tee markers today favoured the boys, as most of them were positioned just behind the “reds”, some female members were not too happy

about that! In general the scoring was good. New member Eamonn Sheridan was probably wishing that he had joined “after” the competition, because 27 points was good enough to win the visitors category and his 34 points wasn’t enough to get into the placing’s in the Gold category. Silver category results went as follows; 4th on lower handicap was Dave Hazel with 31 points, 3rd place went to Alan Rickers on 33 points, your shoulder has recovered then Alan! 2nd place went to Carsten Landaas with 34 points and just 1 point ahead was new Treasurer Alex Goslan to take the top spot. Nice to see that Eddie Miller managed to get into the prises on his last game before he heads off back to blighty for the summer, his 35 points gave him 4th place on higher handicap, one of our steadiest players took 3rd place on lower handicap, well done Vernon Brown. 1st and 2nd places were also decided on lower handicap with both players bettering their handicaps by a point (37 points) but on this occasion Chris Gray had to settle for 2nd because Dave Lethaby has the lower handicap. So the girls have the right to a little moan about the tees, not one female in the prises this week. Photo: the N.T.P. and “2’s” winners The N.T.P.’s this week went to, Hole 3 Kenneth Persson, Hole 6 John Whitaker, Hole 13 Ole Rong and Hole 16 Dave Lethaby The “2’s” pot this week contained just €26 and this had to be shared out between John Whitaker, Alex Goslan and new member Billy Allen Next week sees us visit another favourite, Villamartin, so if you fancy game with a friendly bunch call us on 661 524 101 or visit our website www.tmgs.org

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY - W/E 15 MAY 15 By Mike Chapman We started the week with a Team Counter Game where the number of scores to count towards the total is not known until you reach the next tee which makes for an interesting game especially if you are in the first four ball drawing the numbers out. In superb conditions scoring was good and the winning team with 95 pts were Rod Doel, Dave Pulling, Lindsay Forbes and Annemarie Weisheit. The highlight of

their round was a magnificent eagle by Dave Pulling on the par 5 fourth hole where the pin was located only a few feet from the 20 foot drop running alongside the front of the green. The fixture secretary decided that Wednesday's stableford would be a Hidden Partners with pairs being drawn at the end of the game. The weather conditions were perfect and there were some very good scores however given the format this didn't necessarily mean those with the best scores would be in the prizes when the draw was made and so it proved. The most unlucky players were husband and wife Alan and Olga Douglas who scored 42 and 41 pts respectively but were both drawn with low scoring partners thereby missing out on the prizes but still subject to a severe handicap cut. The highest scoring combinations were as follows: 1st Ulrike Barth and Barry Holtham 73 pts 2nd Yvonne Phipps and Lindsay Forbes 71 pts 3rd Hendrick Oldenziel and Bryan Neal 68 pts There were three 2's in the 2's Club with Ron Phipps scoring two and Alan Douglas one so at least Alan received some compensation for his excellent round. On Friday it was the last tranche of our Match Play Singles group stage with 16 players going through to the knock out stages. There were too many games to mention individually but the biggest winner of the day was Ulrike Barth with a 5 and 4 victory following up her good win on Wednesday. Just my luck that she will be my opponent in the first round of the knock out stage!
