BONSOR AND DANDO TAKE NATIONAL TITLES Photo: Carl Eagle

Players from as far afield as Tenerife and Laura Golf on the Costa del Sol travelled to the Southern Costa Blanca to participate in the 2015 Spanish National Championships. Matches were held at both the San Luis and Quesada Clubs. Following on from the Pre Nationals Open Pairs event the National proper got underway ten days ago during which time there was some amazing bowling; some anticipated results and some that

were totally unexpected. The Ladies rinks was marred by 2 teams having to withdraw in the quarter finals due to ill health on the fateful Thursday when temperatures reached low 40s in the shade. In the semi’s Peta Rhodes, Marianne Holtham, Jacqui Johnston & Lisa Bonsor (Quesada) defeated Sue Johnson, Jan Pocock, Lyn Greenland & Lin Miller (Greenlands) and then Norma Lamberton, Eve Blythe, Carol Broomfield & Diane Riley made it an all Quesada final by defeating Debbie Colquhoun, Gill Atkinson, Jan Dando & Jenny Thompson (Indalo). CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE The final started off as a close affair but the experienced team, skipped by Lisa Bonsor, were the eventual winners by 9 shots. In the Mens rinks both teams comfortably progressed to the final. Cliff Plaisted, Noel Davis, Fred Willshire & Chris Collier (San Miguel) finally losing out to William Holtham, John Muldoon, Bill Pain & Pete Bonsor (Quesada). The Ladies triples final was played between Peta Rhodes, Jacqui Johnston & Lisa Bonsor (Quesada) and Debbie Colquhoun, Gill Atkinson & Jenny Thompson (Indalo). The Quesada ladies took control of this match from the beginning, finally winning by 7 shots. In the Men’s triples, last year’s champions John Muldoon, Bill Pain & Pete Bonsor (Quesada) progressed steadily to the final while Dennis Birkett, Brian Patton & Peter Whitehall (Country Bowls) stormed their way through, winning all tof heir matches by at least 10 shots. The final was a nip & tuck game played at the end of the day. It sounded as though every member of Country Bowls was their cheering their team on. One end changed the course of the game when the Quesada trio were holding 5 and with his final bowl Peter Whitehall trickled off a wing bowl to reduce the score to 1. On the final end the shot changed almost with every bowl but it was the Country Bowls trio who took the title. In the Ladies Pairs the semi-finals were both Quesada v Indalo. In the first of these Peta Rhodes & Lisa Bonsor (Quesada) defeated fellow squad members Debbie Colquhoun & Jan Dando (Indalo). The recent CBBA Champion of Champions finalists Mel Highland & Jacqui Johnston (Quesada) took the honours over Gill Atkinson & Jenny Thompson (Indalo). The final of this game was extremely tight, going down to the wire with the scores at 16 apiece going into the final end. Mel & Jacqui eventually took the silverware by just a single shot.

In the Mens pairs there were some upsets. The favoured pairings of Colin Jackson & Mal Hughes (San Luis) went out in the first round, as did the father & son combination Graham & Robert Cathcart (Tenerife) while the winners of the pretournament pairs Jason Prokopowycz & Derek Sale progressed to the final. In the other side of the draw 2 Costa del Sol teams came through to the semi Terry Morgan & Jeff Pitt (Belplaya) eventually lost to Mac Roberts & Tom Rogers (Lauro Golf). However, in the final, Jason & Derek took the honours. In the Ladies singles last year’s Champion withdrew during her first match due to illness. Her opponent Pauline Robinson (Tenerife) made it to the semi-final before being defeated by 2013 champion Jan Dando (Indalo). In the opposite end of the draw Pat McEwan (San Miguel) took some notable scalps on her way to the semi-final where she lost to Nina McKenzie (Mazarron). The experience of Jan took her through to win the Ladies Singles for the 2nd time in 3 years. Last year’s Mens Singles runner up Mal Hughes (San Luis) went out to Brian Robertson (Mazarron) who was defeated in the next match by Terry Morgan from Bel Playa (Costa del Sol). Terry progressed all the way to the semi-final where he fell to Jason Prokopowycz (Quesada). In the other half of the draw reigning champion Pete Bonsor played steadily throughout to the final. In the final Pete played exhibition standard bowls to win the title for the second year. This year in place of the Player of the Tournament there was a Personality of the Tournament prize. Kevin Reardon of The Leader newspaper presented the award to Mac Roberts (Lauro) who with his doddering, cantankerous style won the hearts of many of the players, officials & spectators. In closing the competition the Outgoing National Director, John Muldoon, paid tribute the organisers, the players and the spectators for what had been a truly wonderful National Tournament.

NEW CAR PARK AND SPORTS CENTRE FOR LA MATA

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dol贸n, has stated this week that a plot of land in La Mata, namely Enclave 7, will soon be converted into an underground car park, thus improving the ability to park vehicles in the town. In addition, the upper level of the plot will see a sports hall constructed on it, covering 1,367 square metres. Dol贸n recalled that in was always in his plans to provide a sports centre for the residents of La Mata who can麓t travel the 2 kilometres to the sports city facilities in Torrevieja. The mayor explained that this new sports hall will not cost anything to build, as selling the plot of land for the car park through an auction of public competition will mean that the income derived from the sale will go to fund the project for construction of the sports hall above. Dol贸n has indicated that the La Mata sports centre will be fully covered, and will feature a main track versatile for all type of sport, including football, handball, basketball, etc., seating for about 500 people and ancillary facilities such as locker rooms, a multipurpose room, toilets and other technical

equipment. Finally, the mayor said that with the countdown for the construction of new sports infrastructure starting, widely demanded by the residents of La Mata, it will allow for the continued expansion of the network of sports facilities in the city of Torrevieja.

ORWELLIAN SPIRIT The son of novelist George Orwell is demanding that the Spanish government resume the restoration of Spanish Civil War trenches, where his father fought with republicans against General Franco's nationalist forces. Speaking on a recent trip to Zaragoza, Richard Blair, 71, said that it was up to the government to keep his father's fighting spirit alive. Orwell almost died when he was shot in the neck during the fighting. He would later write the book Homage to Catalonia about his time fighting for the Workers' Party of Marxist Unification. Orwell would later go on to write classics such as Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm.

VERTIVEGA CALLS FOR CLOSURE OF LANDFILL S I T E Local campaign group, Vertivega, are calling for the closure of the Abanilla Proambiente landfill because of the illegal actions that are allegedly being carried out by staff employed at the site. They say that waste is being dumped in areas that have not been authorized for such use. The group says that they warned of the illegal activities to Seprona, the environmental agency of the Guardia Civil, saying that the site authorities were landfilling in areas where they were not authorized to do so. Their allegations were based on three reports that had been drawn up by Seprona in March following inspections made on the site, since which time the illegal dumping has been taking place. Vertivega say that there has been a breach of the court

order issued on July 19, 2012 and they call for an immediate cessation of all activity on the premises of the landfill whilst SEPRONA Carry out a full investigation. Vertivega is an action group that was born three years ago from the indignation of citizens, associations and other organizations following suspicions of illegal activities carried out in the area of waste management which they say could have disastrous consequences for health, the economy and the environment of the Vega Baja del Segura. AVERAGE NATIONAL SALARIES The average salary in Spain in 2014 stood at 1,634 euros per month, a figure, however, full of contrasts if we look at the differences between regions. The community with the highest salary is the Basque Country, with 1,969 euros whilst the smallest is Extremadura, 1,353 euros, a difference of more than 600 euros per month. The second highest is Madrid (1,927 euros), followed by Navarra (1,753 euros) and Catalonia (1,715 euros). However don’t get too excited because the average salary in the community of Valencia is well below the national average at 1467 euros per month while in neighbouring Murcia it is 1454.

VICE CONSUL ON PARADE IN THE ORIHUELA COSTA Lloyd Milen was the guest speaker at the May meeting of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion held in Mil Palmeras last Thursday evening. Lloyd is, of course, the Vice Consul, at the British Consulate in Alicante. Rather fittingly, although the arrangement had been made some weeks ago, Lloyd had recently assumed the role of RBL (District North Spain) President and his visit to the Orihuela Costa was his first to a local branch since assuming the appointment. However, his presentation to the members focused very much on the role played by the British Consulate in this part of Spain. He spoke of how the Consulate already works closely with the RBL, dealing with those British nationals in need of Legion help and support. He also spoke of his con-

tact within the much wider Spanish Community and how he is continually meeting with Mayors, Councillors and Officials in an effort to promote the integration in Spain of the 160,000 British Nationals registered on local padron’s. He refused to be drawn on questions relating to the forthcoming referendum on EU Membership, and what might happen should the UK pull out, saying that it really was uncharted territory, but he confirmed that governmental policy was very much that the country remains within the Union, albeit on rather different terms. Following his lecture Branch Chairman Keith Carter thanked Lloyd for attending the meeting and concluded by presenting the new President with a Branch Certificate of Appreciation.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

OPEN WIDE! I received an invitation to visit the dentist today. Nothing unusual in that maybe, since I seem to have had a rapid succession of appointments with the dentist since that unfortunate incident with a peanut and excessive turbulence on an internal flight in the Canary Islands last summer. No, this dental appointment is different; it is an invitation to attend a celebration of ten years of the dental practice opening, which fortunately coincided with our arrival in Gran Canaria. At that time I remember tentatively calling into a newly opened surgery in our nearest town to get some details of the dental care that was available. The surgery appeared to be brimming with the latest technology and what seemed to be high tech equipment that was far removed from the small, quaint practice that I usually attended in the UK. I remember being impressed not only with the equipment, but a more sensible regime for appointments, routine cleaning, as well as a clear pricing structure. Indeed, the fees seemed to be about half of those that I paid in the UK. Some years ago, I remember many friends and relatives in the UK commenting that they now had a Spanish dentist, working both in private practice, as well as filling the many gaps in the NHS dental serv-

ice. Even though I was pleased for UK patients, I began to wonder if this would lead to a shortage of dentists in Spain and the Canary Islands, which did seem to be a possibility. Due to changes in the fee structure for dentists in the UK, many dentists were leaving the National Health Service, and provided care for private patients only. This shortage of dentists tempted many newly qualified, as well as established, Spanish dentists to leave Spain in order to fill the acute gaps within the UK’s dental service. This began to cause a problem for Spain’s own dental service, resulting in shortages of qualified dentists. This situation coincided with an excess of dentists being trained in South America, and particularly in Argentina, which had rapidly expanded its dental training programme, as well as developing new dental techniques such as dental implants, resulting in far too many dentists for the country to absorb. This was fortunate, because many newly trained dentists left South America and headed to Spain and the Canary Islands to work in established surgeries, as well as opening their own. My own dentist is also from Argentina and until recently was one of the few dental surgeons in Spain who was sufficiently qualified to deal with dental implants. When I first knew him, he used to work for two days each week in Madrid and three days in Gran Canaria until his own practice became sufficiently well established. Since that time, the dental surgery has grown and rapidly expanded, resulting in much larger premises, as well as a new sister surgery opening in Las Palmas.

The care that we have received has been second to none, and I am grateful that I stumbled across a good dentist during those first heady days of our new life in Gran Canaria. Now that is something to celebrate and it will be so good to visit my dentist for celebratory drinks and nibbles instead of a new crown or a filling! If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander.com or read his latest book, ‘Escape to the Sun’ (ISBN: 9780957544444). CABO ROIG PASEO Dear Editor, Can I just say how pleasant it now is to be able to walk along the paseo at Aguamarina without the need to divert because of the blockage at the Bella Vista Urbanisation. It now opens the Cabo Roig beach and the walkway down to La Zenia to residents and holidaymakers and already, even in advance of the summer rush, the walkway is being used by hundreds of people on a daily basis. I know that over many years the Leader Newspaper was instrumental in applying pressure to the Ayuntamiento to take action and I would very much like to applaud them for ‘sticking at it’ You have helped to make life much more agreeable for me, my wife, and many thousands of others. INFORMED COMMENTATOR In response to Sandpiper’s strong comments about me, in the Leader two weeks ago, I feel bound to say that she,

not me, is the biased writer. I have never been ashamed to write under my own name, and yes, I have supported Pedro Mancebo loyally for the last 6 years using my own name and reputation because I know from personal experience over 14 years that he is an honest politician and a person of high integrity. I personally have been subjected to much vilification from Bob Houliston in the papers and on radio because of my support for this good man. Don’t get me wrong, I can understand Bob, as I have often publicly exposed him for what he is. I believe that because I am not on ANY electoral list for ANY party does qualify me as “informed commentator” whereas prominent Claro member “Sandpiper” has hidden behind a false or assumed name since April 2013. In these last two years she has underhandedly promoted Claro’s Bob Houliston and actively campaigned to separate Orihuela from the Coast. She refers to me as a ¨Biased Mouthpiece¨ but she is deceitful because she is a candidate on the Claro electoral list in position number 5. She appears on Bob’s right hand in all the Claro posters beside the word ¨Honesty¨. It’s interesting her campaign for Coastal independence wasn’t mentioned in last week’s article because she knows that it would lose Claro votes in Orihuela. Sandpiper

last Monday proudly displayed a photo of ¨nearly 100 supporters¨. If you count heads you will count 47 adults and some children. Sandpiper or should I say, Jan Holden, Claro’s No 5, it is clear to see that Honesty is not your strong suit.

The money raised was 604 Euros. The smell of the hog roast cooking tempted people to eat, the children had a great time on the bouncy castle. There were stalls of every description for everyone to browse, a very popular tombola stall and guess the weight of the cake game. There was also a small fashion show and our models did a fabulous job and looked stunning. Our thanks also go out to the hard working staff at Casa Ventura, Patricia Creighton for her sterling work as our MC, Emily Hullman for lending her PA system and last but not least Lisa Marie of Algorfa for the wonderful cake.

Dear Letters' Editor I am writing in response to the letter from Barbara Dean published recently as I feel it important to have the other side to her argument: In reply to Barbara Dean’s letter, the beautiful La Mata and Guardamar beaches should remain dog free and transgressing owners fined. There remains an unseen and harmful health hazard from bacteria even once the evident dog mess has been cleared. All dog owners should be aware of this and thus safe beaches need to be retained. However, and far more horrendous is the power of unleashed dogs to maim. My wife has been attacked twice and now suffers extremely severe panic attacks when dogs are nearby (including when we've been walking on La Mata). My granddaughter has been scarred for life following an attack by one off its leash. Many owners claim, ‘my baby [dog] would never harm anyone’, but many do

and viciously so. It is not just the controlled breeds as we well know. Hence I find Barbara’s letter very selfish. There are plenty of places owners can take their dogs without encroaching on these beaches. Please keep them dog free all year round and continue to fine transgressing owners. Roy Dainty (Professor)

SORRY MARTINA! Who asked for the new crazy cycle lane? I cycle there but I will not use it, holding up traffic, feeling pressured to go fast to clear the route. It’s a quiet road leading into an estate so hardly a priority. Its probably the same people that asked for blue lines at the start for residents (outside a building with offroad parking!) which no one uses, it just blocks 20 or so spaces that could be used for people to park and visit all the bars just round the corner who are finding trade hard enough. If you want to do something useful, retarmac the road from La Zenia to Villamartin Plaza, its more cart track than Carretera and far more important than wasting money on some unwanted paint. "PITT" STOP FOR BRAD IN LOS MONTESINOS? BY ANDREW ATKINSON reporting from Los Montesinos

BRAD Pitt could yet make Alicante based sleepy town Los Montesinos a stopping-off point in the star actor's hectic life schedule - along with Angelina Jolie. Pitt was allegedly photographed in the Vega Baja town of Los Montesinos two years ago, having arrived in Spain by private jet at Murcia, San Javier airport. Sceptics find it hard to believe that the star-struck couple would settle down in Los Montesinos - but they have an affection for Spain - having also visited Madrid and Casares in recent times. Pitt was seen dining with daughters Zahara and Shiloh in Madrid, and Brad and Angelina purchased Spanish artwork from an art Gallery in Casares, following a visit in the province of Malaga, Andalusia, purchashing two paintings, painted on glass, one a 16th Century-style female portrait of Isabella.

Angelina Jolie have visited on more than one occasion.

Pitt starred in the film 'The Councilor' - a crime movie based around drug importers in Spain. And Pitt, who shot scenes filming in Monte Pego, reportedly celebrated a colleagues birthday in Fortuna, Murcia, having been looking at property. Pitt and his family are friends with retired football icon David Beckham and his wife Victoria and their four children, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper. Pitt has told the media that he wanted the former England, Manchester United and Real Madrid star to coach his children football. Beckham was offered to give Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's children Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh and twins Knox and Vivienne personal lessons.

Los Montesinos, near to Guardamar, La Mata and Torrevieja amongst other resorts - has similar scenic views as Casares Costa - a beach side strip of residential urbanisations, bars and restaurants.

And Beckham who played for Preston North End in 1995, while on loan at Deepdale from Manchester United, aged 19, has said that he would like Pitt to play his character, if a film of his career is made.

It is said that Pitt and Jolie are seeking a quiet, relaxing place - such as Los Montesinos - where they were reportedly seen with bodyguards in tow, after driving the short distance from Murcia, to view a huge property worth 1 million plus euros.

As Author of the book: 'David Beckham-In at the Deep End', Prestonborn Andrew Atkinson, who has featured on VivaTVs 'Let's Talk Show' said: "If Brad Pitt does purchase a property in Los Montesinos, and invites David Beckham over, I will gladly speak to him about Becks' days at North End.

Photos of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and their six children were taken in Los Montesinos square, near to the Church, featuring a picturesque bell-tower, when they were in town on vacation - allegedly seeking a property. Pitt and Jolie reportedly took time looking around Los Montesinos, having arrived in two Mercedes S-class cars along with bodyguards. And locals in Los Montesinos have revealed that Brad Pitt and

"David Beckham has always remembered his roots in the game, and his short 'apprenticeship' at Preston North End as a teenager in the old third division." Andrew added: "Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and their family would be a welcome addition to the Vega Baja and Los Montesinos - it would be a perfect 'Pitt-stop' in their hectic life schedule."

BIRDS RAISE THEIR BROOD BENEATH 4X4’S BONNET There’s a new kind of twitter buzz about the Land Cruiser since a pair of robins picked Toyota’s mighty 4?4 as the perfect place to raise their young. The bold birds built their nest in the engine compartment of the car and travelled more than 250 miles before they were discovered. Dave Merchant, from Henley in Somerset, only found the stowaways when he went to check the oil in his Land Cruiser Amazon. The mother bird had been sitting on a clutch of eggs that successfully produced five chicks that are now well on the way to fledging. Dave said: “The fact that I was driving the Land Cruiser around while the robins were nesting and that the birds hatched successfully shows what a good car this is. As soon as I saw the chicks I of course stopped driving the car and I won’t use it again until they have flown the nest.” Dave is a great advocate for Land Cruiser performance and reliability – and now it merits as probably the world’s biggest bird box. He has covered more than 80,000 miles in his vehicle since acquiring it in 2008 and has also chosen a Land Cruiser for his son. Robins are renowned for their fearlessness, territorial behaviour and their sometimes strange nesting choices. Although unusual, this is not the first Toyota to house a bird’s nest: last year a local newspaper in Victoria, Australia, reported on a birds nest in the engine compartment of a RAV4.

HIDDEN VEHICLE HISTORY BUYING ADVICE

In the UK, a warning has been issued by vehicle history check experts HPI, about the hidden administrative risks when buying a used car. The latest survey reveals that a staggering 42% of used car buyers don’t know who legally owns a car that has finance owing on it. The truth is that a vehicle with outstanding finance belongs to the finance house, which has the legal right to repossess that vehicle at anytime, without warning; 1 in 4 cars checked by HPI are subject to outstanding finance. Nearly a quarter of those surveyed (23%) assumed the car belongs to the person named on the vehicle’s Log Book, highlighting the extent of misconception amongst consumers. The good news for consumers buying from a dealer is, that if they later discover the vehicle is on finance and repossessed, they will be protected by Innocent Purchaser Protection (IPP) and will be able to get back their money and buy another car. HPI recommends that you always conduct a vehicle history check BEFORE you buy, it will tell you if the car has outstanding finance against it and enables you to ensure that the finance agreement is concluded before you complete the purchase. In Spain, similar checks can be conducted through the website of the traffic department, the DGT, via www.dgt.es. On the front page of the website, under “Trámites y multas”, you will see a link that reads “Informe del Vehículo”. There are many other useful links too, all which are worthwhile looking into, but it is this “Vehicle report” that we are concentrating on here. The vehicle registry in Spain is managed by the DGT, but the information contained in the database is available to members of the public who have a legitimate reason for requesting the data. If you know the vehicle number plate or chassis number, you can find out such details as the vehicle Ownership, specifications, number of previous owners, administrative status and ITV expiration date.

Your identification by means of a digital certificate needs to be provided in order to obtain the information on record; this might prove a hurdle to none Spanish speakers, but on on-line translator such as Google can help with most of the content. There is a small administration fee for obtaining the information, which can be paid for by credit or debit card. Although that fee is considerably lower than the financial risk of purchasing a car that has a dubious history, or has sanctions in place against it.

LOCAL ARTIST INSPIRED BY TORREVIEJA SWIMMER Local artist Julia Everett-Wragg was so inspired by an action shot of Torrevieja swimmer Zoe Connelly that she saw in The Leader newspaper that she decided to commit the image to a painting. She described the photo as ‘an inspiration’ and it was not too long before she set about applying it to canvas. “I could see the effort required by Zoe in the butterfly stroke and I just had to capture the sheer determination on her face as she pulled herself through the water,” said Juevra, “so just a few weeks ago I set about my task, with the hopeful intention of perhaps, one day, actually meeting Zoe and presenting her with the picture, but I never realised that it would happen quite so quickly.” Just last week, with the painting now complete, Juevra made contact with the Leader in the hope that we could help her to meet up with Zoe with the intention of presenting the finished work to the young swimmer. The email was passed to Zoe’s mother who responded the very next day. “Zoe was absolutely delighted,” said mum Vicki, who incidentally was responsible for taking the initial photograph. “I showed the email to Zoe and she was so excited. She would love to accept the painting and would be really pleased to meet with the artist.” And so, within just a couple of days, arrangements were made for a meeting at the Torrevieja Swimming Pool, the home of Zoe’s parent club,

Club Natacion Torrevieja. The pair met last Tuesday evening, along with mother Vicki, when the presentation was made. Vicki was quite obviously delighted as indeed was the artist Juevra. “I was so pleased to see the genuine show of appreciation from Zoe, it was such a thrill to hand over the painting to her.” Juevra explained that she only took up painting fairly recently whilst on a cruise that offered 12 free art classes on sea days. Before the end of the cruise she had painted 5 watercolour pictures which were exhibited on the final day. On her return to Torrevieja she then joined the U3A painting course. Now having changed to acrylic, Juevra only paints images that inspire her, recent works including a Spanish flamenco dancer, a Spanish friend’s children, a portrait of her husband, a landscape in Peniscola and of course the action painting of 13 year old Zoe. Later that evening the painting was shown to all the club swimmers, many now wanting a painting of their own. But with it now safely hanging in ‘pride of place’ on her bedroom wall Zoe will get back to the real business of competing and with her eyes firmly set on the Spanish National Summer Championships to be held later the year in Barcelona, for which she has already qualified, this young Torrevieja swimmer might be find herself inspired every time she looks up at the painting hanging above her head.

ARMED FORCES DAY IN LA MURADA

The village of La Maurada will host Armed Forces Day on 6 June during which residents will be invited to swear an oath of allegiance to the Spanish flag. Details of the ceremony were announced last week by the Mayor of Orihuela , Monseratte Guillen, along with the Director of the General Air Academy in San Javier, Colonel Sanchez de Lara. This will be the 4th time in the last 4 years that such an event has been organized by the Academy in the

Province of Alicante. The mayor invited all citizens of Orihuela and the district of Vega Baja to take part in the event but he explained that anyone wishing to pledge their allegiance must first submit a request to the Protocol Department at the Orihuela Town Hall, preferably by email to protocolo@orihuela.es mail. The deadline for applications is 29 May. Colonel Sanchez de Lara said that all those participating must, however, be over 18 years of age and have Spanish Nationality. He went on to outline the basic organization of the ceremony as well as confirming that the day would also include a parade and a parachute drop in the village. The event will get underway at 11 am in la avenida San José and will last approximately an hour and a half. The salute will be taken by General Mestre, who rather fittingly was born in La Murada.

FREE WIFI ON BENIDORM BEACHES Visitors and residents of Benidorm will be able to enjoy free WiFi on the beach this summer, in a pilot scheme known as “SmartWiFi”. There will be no cost to the municipality for the scheme, of to the users, who will have to interact by providing information on social networks, probably by simply “liking” a page, or “following” an account. The plan is expected to spread along all of the beaches, but will focus initially on an area from el Torrejó to calle Bilbao, and from the area of the mirador del Castillo. The network should be operational throughout July

and August, once the equipment has been installed. If successful, the network may then be put out to public tender before spreading through the rest of the beaches.

STEM CELLS TO TREAT KNEE OSTEOAR THRITIS Mesenchymal stem cells are capable of producing different specialised cells that are found in skeletal tissues. Spanish researchers at the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) have successfully carried out a clinical trial that shows the effectiveness of treatment with stem cells from healthy donors to treat knee osteoarthritis. The results of the work prove the validity of this therapy as an alternative to conventional treatments that do not regenerate the cartilage. Today, around 30% of the Spanish population over the age of 60 suffer from this type of pain and the annual cost of conventional treatment is around â‚Ź1,500 per patient, according to data from the Spanish Rheumatology Society. The research group at the Cell Therapy Network at the ISCIII designed a clinical trial with 30 patients suffering from chronic knee osteoarthritis unresponsive to conventional treatment. Those who were treated with stem cells did not experience any side effects, and showed considerable pain relief, as well as a clear improvement in the cartilage quality, which was shown through magnetic resonance imaging. The outcome of the work conducted by the Spanish researchers has been published in Transplantation, the leading international scientific journal in the field of transplants and cell therapy. The Cell Therapy Network (TerCel) is a joint project that began its activity in 2003 with the aim of fostering research into cell therapy and transfer scientific progress in this field to the National Health System. TerCel forms part of the Cooperative Health Research Thematic Networks (RETICS) of the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), the main Public Organisation that funds, manages and carries out biomedical research in Spain.

NEW TECHNIQUE IN ALICANTE IMPROVES SURVIVAL RATE FOR BRAIN TUMOURS

Alicante General Hospital has introduced new technology that helps to improve the survival of those patients with malignant brain tumors. It is a microscope that better displays a dyed fluid in the affected area so that neurosurgeons can better distinguish between diseased and healthy tissue during surgery enabling them to be more accurate in their techniques. According to the head of the neurosurgery department, Dr. Pedro Moreno, "the problem we have, particularly with malignant brain tumors, is that when you open the skull it is difficult to distinguish different brain tissue, everything looks similar which requires the surgeon to err on the side of caution. As such there are occasions when not all of the damaged tissue is removed. The new tool provides intraoperative imaging, allowing much better reproduction however it is a very expensive system because of the necessary installation of equipment in the operating theatre which must then be devoted exclusively to this type of intervention. The patient is takes the substance by mouth, four or five hours before surgery, a drug that spreads throughout the cells which are deeply stained. The neurosurgeon is able to see the dye through a special ultraviolet filter, unlike the classic white light that was previously used. The direct consequence of this new technology is an improved rate of

Using the new techniques in Alicante Hospital

survival because the more of the tumor that is removed, the more years the patient is likely to survive. Ten patients have benefited from this technique since March and is expected to use the procedure in another 30-40 before the end of the year. "The Hospital management has made an extraordinary effort. It is an expensive technology, but now that we have it installed Alicante is able to compete with many other hospitals in the Region" he says.

CHILDREN'S HOME - OPEN DAY SUNDAY 31ST MAY The Director of the children's home would like to welcome you to an open day from 11am - 4pm at the Home on Sunday 31st May. This is to give you the opportunity to meet the staff and the children and to see how the money you raise is put to good use. Also, although we have many people out there who organise fund raising events for us, we are in desperate need of some extra volunteers to attend these events to represent the charity and sell raffle tickets, etc. So even if you are only able to give one afternoon/evening a month, and you think this might be something you would be interested in getting involved in, please come along to the open day to see the Home and you can talk to some of the current volunteers who will give you more of an insight into how we work. This is going to be a fun day out, with entertainment and paella provided (see poster above) and we hope to see as many faces old and new as possible. If you would like to attend, please send me an e-mail by return with the names of the people attending to add to the guest list. I will then send you an invite which you will need to take with you on the day. We need to advise the Director the names and numbers, so please do not turn up on the day without an invite. We sincerely hope that you can make it. More information is shown in the poster alongside this article.

FASHION SHOW AT GABBY’S BAR - 1 JUNE On Monday 1 June Gabby’s Bar, Plaza de Europa in Calas Blancas, will be holding a fashion show by Diane Westbrook with proceeds also going to the Elche Children’s Home. SPORTSMAN GS & FRIENDS CUP VALLE DEL ESTE GOLF RESORT – 18th - 21st MAY 2015 The inaugural annual tournament between members of the Sportsman Golf Society and friends was played at Valle Del Este Golf Resort, a total of 12 players took advantage of the great deal obtained by organiser Dave Smith for a 3 night stay which included unlimited golf and half board in the resorts hotel. Well done Dave for organising the trip. The Valle Del Este course is a very challenging course and with its deep ravines and water features, it was an ideal venue for the first of these planned future annual events. The format was a Practice on Day 1 and then individual stableford over the next three rounds with 2 of the 3 rounds counting towards the overall winner. We also had a couple of team games thrown into the mix and each day a nearest the pin and of course a two's sweep. It was a tiring week having played 18 holes each day some players managed 27 holes on the second day and 36 holes on the third day. With the temperatures forecast to be mid 20's for the week it all made for a good trip. As expected there were some serious golf as well as some laughs with a couple of players having stories to tell of lucky shots, regular duals with palm trees and in one instance a chip from the fringe of the green that after 4 attempts and a double hit his playing partners were rolling around the green in laughter. Not to be done by this when the hole was finished the same player was so disgusted that he went back to prove he could chip the ball close. Needless to say he did the same again it

was painful on the abdomen. Not going too mention names tho………… I have to say it’s the first time I have played the course and what a challenge it was, really good golfing holes and the driver can only be used on a handful of them. The scores throughout the stay reflected the difficulty with some seasoned golfers beating themselves up in places. The only criticisms is that the teeing ground was very small and due to heavy usage it was difficult to find a good teeing spot. The buggies are also in need of a good service with brakes that were none existent, other than that we all had a great time. Scores over the trip as follows : Day 1 (Practice round) Day 2 (Competition) 1st Kevin Hall 37 pts 1st Kevin Hall 34 pts 2nd Ian Faulkner 34 pts 2nd Mike Medd 31 pts 2's Ian Faulkner Day 3 (Competition) Day 4 (Competition) 1st Steve Smith 34 pts c/b 1st Mike Medd 36 pts 2nd Dave Smith 34 pts 2nd Ian Faulkner 32 pts 2's John King & Dave Smith 2's No Winners, NTP Mike Medd NTP John King (almost an ace) Overall Winner : Mike Medd 67 pts

T.M.G.S. AT VILLAMARTIN 20/5/15

The forecast for today didn’t look that good, but luckily the rain that was promised, never arrived. That made playing conditions almost perfect, a little overcast with a slight breeze and opps! The greens were hollow tyned last week. It must be said that the new Green Keeper is doing a splendid job because the greens had recovered remarkable well, well enough in fact for the winners of both Categories to need 38 points to bring home the bacon. You know when you reach the ripe old age of 82 you’re chuffed just to be on the golf course, but a certain Tom Jones ( no not him) playing of handicap 28 scored a very credible 35 points to put him in 4th place in the Silver Category, well done Tom. The top 3 places were fought out between 3 of our Scandinavian members , 3rd place went to recently joined member Carsten Landaas with level par 36 points, in 2nd place came Ole Rong with 37 points but the winner Per Skarnes managed a handicap cutting 38 points. In the Gold Category, Mick Kennedy on his 1st game in 6 weeks managed to take 4th place with 34 points, Vernon Brown demonstrated that although he turned 60 a couple of days ago it hasn’t interfered with his golf, his 37 points from handicap of 9 is a credit to you Vernon,2nd & 1st places had to be decided by handicap and Captain John Eyre lost out to new member from Ireland Eamonn Sheridan, now

Eamonn began the day complaining that his handicap was too low, so he’s probably happy to be going home to Ireland to recover from his handicap cut after returning 38 points. His accomplice over the last 2 weeks has been Ken White, who played as a visitor, his score this week outshone last week’s by 9 points, his 36 points was good enough to win the visitors prize. The Secretary did inform him that he would be notifying his home club in Ireland about his performance, to which he replied that’s fine I’m the clubs’, handicap Secretary!! The N.T.P.’S recipients were hole 6, Sandy McGee, hole 9, Tom Jones, hole 13, Captain, John Eyre, hole 17, Mick Kennedy. The “2’s” pot contained €27, this was shared out between Vernon Brown and Chris Bellman, hole 6 and John Eyre hole 9, he missed a 6 footer on hole 13 where he took the N.T.P. Photo: Gold Category Winners. Our next Competition on Wednesday 27th May, takes us on a 2hr. bus journey to the fantastic course, Las Pinaillas (Albacete) and it’s worth every minute. This course bears no resemblance to any of the courses on the Costa Blanca. If you would like to try it for the fantastic price of just €55, this includes, bus, green fee, buggy, comp fee, and a 3 course meal in the club house afterwards. San Miguel Golf Society at Las Ramblas. May 20th

SMGS’s first visit to Las Ramblas for 6 months saw a good turn-out of 37 members and 7 guests to play a stableford competition. A course that it seems players either love or hate, with few remaining indifferent, again proved testing for many, particularly the back nine. Tricky pin positions, generally either at the very front or back of greens, a breeze that got up for the latter part of the round, and trees that some would say are strategically placed, others that they shouldn’t be there, appeared to be the main culprits for many having a tough day. The actual condition of the course couldn’t be faulted though and it seems that, in general, the longer hitters and lower handicappers of the gold category handled the course, which certainly tests a player’s course management, better than those in silver and bronze. Eight of those members playing had played an International League match at Las Ramblas 4 days earlier, drawing two-two with the Falcons of the Celts Golf Club. Interestingly, the four players winning their doubles matches that day came in the leading category prizes, 1st, 2nd and 3rd in Gold and 2nd in Silver. Perhaps a case of horses for courses! One match was held in the SMGS 2015 singles competition, with 2014 title winner and current holder Ken Flaherty losing out to Ellen Drakesmith 3 and 2. The day’s results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Norman Padmore (30 on CB), 3rd Ellen Drakesmith (30 on CB), 2nd Marg Birtwistle (31), swapping positions from last week

with this weeks’s winner Chris Hamblett (33). Silver Category: 4th Noel Bannon (30 on CB), 3rd Peter Reed (31), 2nd Mike Jordan (32) and 1st Glen Rapley with 35 points. Gold Category: 4th Roger Webb (34 on CB), 3rd John Drakesmith (34 on CB), 2nd Robin Eastman (35), and 1st, the only person to play better than their handicap and with by far the best score of the day, course member Brian Staines with a magnificent 41 points. The Abacus was won by Mick Roscoe who, at the time of the writing of this report, is out buying a chainsaw. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Ken Flaherty (6), Paul Kelly (10), Roger Webb (12) and Noel Bannon (14). The best front 9 and not in the prizes was won by John Aitchison (20 on CB) and, highlighting the difference for many between front and back 9 scores, the best back 9 by Barry Roehrig with 15 points Two best guest prizes, with Ian Drakesmith beating Ken Barry on countback. Our thanks go to the staff at Las Ramblas golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable/stressful (delete as appropriate) day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf gettogethers. Next week we will be at La Finca.

LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY FOUNDERS TROPHY

The Founders Trophy is a recent addition to our calendar but it holds a special place as it is sponsored by founder member, Barry Martin. As normal this was played as an individual Stableford but ‘blind pairs’ were drawn after the game to determine the winners. Alicante GC was the venue for this competition. The course is returning to its usual high standard and the greens were as difficult to read as always. The weather however, was another matter altogether. Unseasonably high temperatures were the order of the day with a number or members struggling with the heat and humidity. The overall scoring did not reflect the conditions and everybody is to be congratulated on completing the round especially Colin Yarnton returning to golf after ill health.. Prize giving took place at La Marina Sports &

Social Centre after what is rapidly becoming a feature of our golf days, the buffet, supplied as always by Helena & Paolo. Results: Nearest the Pin: Hole 8Steve Warner, Hole 12 John Brastock, Hole 17 Bill England Nearest the Pin in 2 shots: Hole 2 Graham Marriner 3rd place: 58 pts Sarah McCabe/Roger Honey 2nd place: 59 pts Jimmy Scott/Alan Craig 1st place C/B59 pts Steve Warner/Bill England Our next completion is on Thursday May 28th at Roda GC. First tee time 10.16a.m. Our next social event is a Bingo Quiz to be held at La Marina Sports & Social Centre on Tuesday May 19th , 7.00p.m. for 7.30p.m. Contact Alan or Elspeth on 634 347788 for further information on either of these events.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY W/E 22 MAY 15 by Mike Chapman

In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services at Vistabella on 20th May This was the fifth meeting of the new year for the Spanglish Golf Society and a small group of 12 players visited the established course at Vistabella taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The weather forecast was for possible rain but other than a few spots we had no problems and ended in brilliant sunshine. Today we played a better ball pair team event. The winners on the day were as follows: 1st – Brian Proctor & Jim Speakman – 41 points 2nd – Graham Hall & John Clark – 37 points 3rd – Jack Fanning & Phil Johnson - 34 points Nearest the Pins – Mike Probert After the game we returned to the Spanglish bar, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their support. Our next fixture is at Alicante on Wednesday 17th May 2015 and visitors and guests are welcome. If you are interested in joining the group call Paul Cawte on 966731223 or better still pop into the bar. Report by Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services on 966 704 752 or 661 345 931 or see us at our web-site at www.costa-blanca-greenfees.com.

It was a beautiful sunny day for our first game of the week on Monday which was a 2 ball better ball. There was a good turn out and the clear winners were Ulrike Barth and Mike Chapman with an excellent score of 46 pts. Both players contributed equally with 9 scores each counting towards their total. In second place were guests Mike Hildred and Ian Stones with 42 pts. It was Dougie Wright's Presidents Day on Wednesday which took the form of an individual stableford competition. With a trophy on offer there were some 40 players on the first tee trying to win one of our major prizes. The weather was overcast and windy but thankfully the rain stayed away enabling everyone to complete their rounds despite the efforts of some slow playing non-members delaying our progress. Despite the poor conditions scoring was good with Alan Douglas securing his second trophy of the season with 39 pts. A photograph showing Alan receiving his trophy from our President Doug Wright is shown above. The full result was as follows: 1st Alan Douglas 39 pts 2nd Tom Hardie 37 pts 3rd Ian Stones 36 pts (c/b) 4th Maria Oldenziel 36 pts Nearest the Pin: Hole 6 Peter Dunn, Hole 14 Hendrick Oldenziel, Hole 15 Ken Robertson 2's Club: Peter Dunn, Lindsay Forbes, Terry Cullen, Dave Pulling and Liz Robertson. On Friday it was the start of the knock out stage of our Singles Match Play competition with the last 16 attempting to reach the quarter finals. The eight players going through are Geoff Biggerstaff, Bryan Neal, Rod Doel, Lindsay Forbes, Tom Hardie, Olga Douglas, John Collins and Ulrike Barth. Those not involved in the Match Play competition played an individual stableford which was won with 33 pts by a bruised Terry Field who was hit on the back by a golf ball on the first fairway. The attempt to take Terry out of contention by the culprit Ron Phipps was unsuccessful as he lost on a count back having also scored 33 pts and it cost him a beer in compensation!

IMANYO GOLF PARKINSON’S CHARITY VASE AT FONT DEL Llop

This was the first major competition for our charity Parkinson’s and we were privileged to have a representative from England, Geoff Ham who played and sponsored the vase. The day started with a full English breakfast for the 27 members in Imanyo’s, the format would be singles full handicap stableford, and we incorporated the Jacque Cousteau award with anyone putting the ball in the water would donate a euro to the charity. On arriving at the course we received a friendly greeting from the staff and the course was in great condition. Winner of the Parkinson’s Vase was Judy Evans with an excellent 42 points, runner up was Stuart Barclay 40 points, The Endeavour award went to Ann Adams 4 points. Nearest the pins, hole 3 in one shot Wendy Ralph, hole 7 in two shots (Keep it in the Family) Alan Ralph, hole 10 in three shots Stuart Barclay, hole 15 in four shots Neil Adams

(Birdie) and hole 17 in one shot (Keep it in the Family) Alan Ralph, the Jacque Cousteau award went to Ann Adams who donated an undisclosed sum? The presentation was held at Imanyo’s where hot food and a few tipples were waiting. Thank you to Geoff Ham and Ted Adams for providing and presenting all the prizes. Geoff Ham won the first football card and Wendy Ralph won the second and generously put the money back to the charity. Total raised on the day was €182 with €100 coming from all the balls that went in the water. EL PIRATA GOLF SOCIETY 19TH MAY – INAUGURAL GAME AT LA MARQUESA.

(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Unmentionables’ So what do you call them? The J.Arthur Rank, the Lucy Locket, the socket or the shank. Whatever it is, forget the top, the hook, the slice or the total miss because the shank is the most destructive shot in the golfers armoury. Why is this? Well the answer is simple not only does the shot ruin any chance that you have of having a good golf score on the day but it immediately impacts on your confidence. Everyone that has had a shank will know the feelings that you have as a golfer when you try and play the next shot with an iron club. This affliction is not limited to the amateur because at a British Open Championship at Troon Darren Clarke hit a shank with a 2- iron on the second hole which ended up on the beach and he was leading the tournament at the time. Similarly in the Volvo Masters at Valderrama in 1987 Sandy Lyle shanked his 3rd shot to the notorious 17th hole while also leading the event. He did however go on to win the event after a play-off with Colin Montgomerie. So what causes a shank? Let us remove one misconception before we start. It is stated that a shank is almost a perfect golf shot. What a load of rubbish, there are technical reasons within your swing that causes you to shank the ball. Let me get the technical bit out of the way first. A shank is usually caused because the golfer is standing too far away from the ball and this has the impact of throwing you forward on to your toes during your downswing, especially if you are also throwing your shoulders at the ball and coming over the top. The first thing to do is to stand a little closer to the ball and a simple method is to ensure that your shoulders are over your knees, which in turn are over your shoe laces. Additionally there is a simple practise method, which involves playing a few shots with something under your left toe, a ball or a club shaft will do. This will help you to turn through on your left heel because you can’t fall forward if you put your weight into your heel. To overcome the mental problems cause by the shank you should start by having trust in the technique to overcome the shot and play with a positive intent and commit to all iron shots. It is vital that you start to visualise shots flying onto the green and landing softly. You must stay in the present and forget the bad shots that have happened and you will find that this bad shot disappears as quickly as it arrived. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. ‘What a great day’ not my words but those from a number of the members. Twenty four members met up early morning at the Bar El Pirata for coffee, with brandy and biscuits for some, to start the day off in Spanish fashion. We left the bar to the noise of the crowd, well in truth Sam, our hostess, and some of the regulars on the terrace wishing us luck for our inaugural game. The weather could not have been better with a blue sky, a pleasant temperature and a slight breeze which at times during the morning turned windy. The course was in good condition with good well kept greens. There were some muddy areas around the fairways but, in some cases, this was due to on going works to improve the course. All in all this did not detract from our game. After the game we meandered back to the Bar for a well needed drink and

for some of us to drown our sorrows. Our hostess Sam , with help from her partner and mum provided food which was greatly appreciated. Our semiprofessional photographer, Kristoff, was at hand to record a fantastic day. It was great that wives, girlfriends and partners joined us for the presentation which made for a great atmosphere. The winners on the day were: Gold section: 1st Tom Johnston 29pts, 2nd John Young 28pts (on c\b, 3rd Preston Ives 28pts (on c\b) Silver section: 1st Keith Smith 37pts, 2nd Aileen Johnston 27pts, 3rd Barry Grinsell 26pts. 2’s Brian Leys and Tom Gallego Our next two games have been arranged for the 16th June at Alenda Golf and the 21st July at Las Colinas. RUBY’S GOLF SOCIETY AT THE MED BAR EL RASO

A repeat of the high scores at our last trophy game could never happen, but it did. Handicap cuts in abundance brought a smile to our secretary's face from the results of our trophy game at Alenda. The greens had been hollowtined but although slow were fairly accurate and most of the 23 players we took to Alenda obviously mastered them quickly. Winners on the day were, nearest the pins on the par 3's Andrew Drinkhall x 2, Roy Molyneaux and Colin Fear. Nearest the pin in 2 was John Goulder and nearest the pin in 3 was Colin Fear, longest drive from the ladies was Theresa Wright. Best front nine Roger Guilderson, best back Ray

Muttocks who also won the football card. Silver division winner John Goulder, Gold division and overall winner on the day was Andrew Drinkhall with a massive 41 points. The two's pot was shared today between Colin Fear and Ray Muttocks. Our hosts The Med Bar put on a great spread for us back at El Raso and a great night was had wondering how they would all cope with their new handicaps. Our next game is the Andrew Kelso memorial day which is fully booked. For further details about the society contact us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk

We all returned back to our home base, The Orange Tree Bar and Restaurant in Cabo Roig for the presentation and lovely snacks and drinks. Thanks to Chris, Nigel, Lilly, Hannah, Viv, Brian, Katie and Dawn for providing these and the wonderful welcome also. Winners of this weeks event was Nigel Cawthra, Chris Blown and Martin Lowe. CD TORREVIEJA END OF SEASON ROUNDUP The season started off well enough, unbeaten for the first 4 matches, then a perfect 4 out of 4 victories in October. When Torry recorded a superb 4-2 conquest over Muro in mid January, they deservedly reached the dizzy heights of 2nd place, but a disastrous run of 5 straight defeats, then 2 draws, signalled the end of manager Galiana's short lived reign. Enter Pedreno, and what an amazing initiation it was. A 6 match unbeaten run, commenced with a superb 6-1 thrashing of Acero, as the fans were treated to positive attacking football, the likes of which had been sadly lacking for some while. Although a defeat at Novelda proved near fatal regarding their slender play off aspirations, a 3 match unbeaten run, resulted in a final league div 3 position of 10th. So, what went wrong? After promising so much, Galiana appeared to have lost the support of the Having done his job at Torry, such players, who were conis Pedreno’s dedication and loyalty stantly asked to apply negthat he then went back to his old ative tactics, whilst hardly club Horadada, for the final two endearing himself to the games of the season, and guided fans. Pedreno lifted the them to safety shackles, allowing players

to express themselves, restoring a smile, which sadly had been missing for too long. Unfortunately, goals were in short supply. Apart from top scorer Rafa (10), and Cesar (9), the next highest scorer was shared amongst 5 players, who scored 3 goals each. Even though Spanish referees at this level are infamous at lacking common sense, regarding when and when not to caution or send off a player, discipline was undoubtedly very poor. Key players missed a whopping 22 matches through suspension, as Jorge headed the list with 5. A total of 33 players were named on team sheets, although only 22 actually played, in a season when an unchanged side became a rarity. Having said that, a number of cruel injuries put paid to any form of continuity, none more so than promising youngsters Sergi and Ruben, plus Martin, who was missing for a large chunk of matches. Pedreno is already arranging pre season friendlies, including a provisional one on 23 or 24 July against Hull City, whilst they are taking a summer training break at Campoamor. Hopefully, season 15/16 will see him lead his side to a play off place, whilst continuing to entertain the fans with imaginative attacking football. End of season player awards went to the following: Young player of the year - Ruben Most improved player - Adrian Golden Boot - Rafa Val Lancaster Trophy - Vicente Players player of the year - Rafa Player of the year - Oscar

ELCHE SIGN OFF WITH A WHIMPER .... LEVANTE UD 0 CD ELCHE 0 Elche CF closed out their, at times, turbulent season with a goal-less draw from their dead rubber with near(ish) Valencia neighbours Levante. The fact the match kicked-off two hours before the rest of the games on this the final day of the season tells you all you might have needed to know about it's importance. La Liga safety for both sides was assured a couple of games ago so this was merely an exercise in getting the final fixture out of the way and it showed. Elche were brighter throughout with the lions share of the chances and did more than enough to win it. Instead, profligacy in front of goal was the order of the day and players with the most to prove did the precise opposite. Top scorer and want-away striker Jonathas was absent, suspended, so Christian Herrera was handed the role of leading the line. He did so in almost complete anonymity. Truth be told this was a football match of seemingly unending tedium, particularly during an especially dull first half. Both sides had occasional bursts of energy but moments of excitement in or around either penalty area were few and far between. Barely ten thousand were there to witness the non-spectacle and those who managed to stay away were the lucky ones. The visitors had by far the best of the second half and should have gone ahead on sixty six minutes when Elche born and bred midfielder Aarón Ñíguez was felled inside the box for a clear penalty. Waving away the protestations of regular spot-kick taker David Lombán, the Ilicitano then proceeded to fire a dire dead ball straight at Levante goalkeeper Mariño for the easiest save of his season. His embarrassment was complete just moments later when he was substituted by Coro. Worse was to follow for Elche who, by now, were fashioning some decent chances. Two of the best fell to Herrera who, just a couple of years ago couldn't stop scoring for the Elche B team. Twice clean through and onside he slipped the ball past a post when Mariño's goal presented a far bigger target. Eventually, and not before time, Andaluz

An anguished Aaron Niguez after missing Elche’s penalty referee Melero López blew for time and the Ilicitano's completed their season with an impressive haul of 41 points, one more than last time, and thirteenth place. Manager Fran Escribá, if he stays, now has a rebuilding job to do at Elche. The club survived with ease in the Primera División thanks to the goals of Jonathas and a much improved second half of the campaign. As part of the soap opera behind the scenes, the football club faces a summer transfer embargo and now, having worked wonders during his three seasons directing operations from the Elche bench, Escribá may decide to call time on his Alicante adventure and seek a new challenge. It'll be an interesting summer.

LA MARINA BOWLS CLUB By Bobbie Sims On Saturday 16th May La Marina members were together to play our annual memorial game for our late president and friend, Phil Morris. Phil was our Hon President from 2001-2013, and his wife Joan has dedicated a trophy in his memory which we enjoy playing for each year, on a sunny morning we were together with fun and memories of a man who was highly thought of for all he did for our club over his many years with us. Although there were some trips and some rinks, our runners up this year were Angie Butler, George Furzer, Jimmy Freeman and Bill Jones and winners were Roger Stacey, John Rae and Barry Sadler, as usual a great time was had by all. A big thank you goes to Louisa, the owner of our club who provided a splendid buffet after tha game
