COLLECTIVE CULPABILITY AT THE ORIHUELA COSTA TOWN HALL People are dying! Where is the lifebelt Mr Mayor?
By Clive Irwin I have just seen a man being pulled, unconscious, from the sea by strangers and then dragged across the rocks. HE LOOKED DEAD! The day before, I had witnessed 8 people – men, women and children – being rescued by different individuals, all strangers. They were all, thankfully, conscious when they were helped
ashore; badly shaken, exhausted and within minutes of drowning, but mercifully still alive. On both days, of course, ambulances eventually arrived along the smart costal path, lights flashing. They were either unaware of the correct access route or they had been unable to access the walkway because parked cars had, quite legitimately, blocked the unmarked entrance. Continued on Page 2

Policia Local and then the Guardia Civil hurried around, but were actually able to do very little. Some long minutes later, as the man on Friday lay motionless on the rocks, paramedics performed cardiac massage, applied their charged defibrillator whilst all the while, a swelling, sickening crowd of young and old looked morbidly on. I cannot help wondering……. How you, Mr Orihuela Mayor, would respond , if you had been relaxing on Playa Bosque with your family, only to hear the distant but familiar cries for help from your desperate son, daughter, mother or father? How would you feel, Mr Mayor, if, just as your relative was being swept onto the rocks by a shock, relentless, invisible current, you noticed, too late, a small, distant, rusty sign warning of Danger? FOR THAT IS ALL THAT YOUR TOWNHALL HAS PROVIDED! How would you feel, as bare-footed strangers tracked your inert relative, from the relative safety of the jagged rocks, totally unable to help and in fear of their own lives? Yet they can all see the metal post, a mere 10 metres away from your desperate relative; it has been specifically designed with a large hook on which to hang an emergency lifebelt - but, for any of your unfortunate relatives, Mr Mayor, just as for the man on Friday and for the countless others, there is no salvation - for the lifebelt is missing and has been for many months. I wonder, at that moment, whether, Mr Mayor, you might begin to feel any anger, frustration or even sickness building in the pit of your stomach as you visualised the penny-pinching official who decided that it was just too expensive to replace such life-saving devices between September and June? Or even provide a safety rope, attached from the shore to a buoy? Might it have crossed your mind, Mr Mayor, that the administration really ought to accept some moral responsibil-

ity and to begin to exercise its duty of care to the Townhall’s visitors rather more seriously? Or perhaps, you feel, here on Playa Bosque, things are not that bad? After all, you have found sufficient Townhall funds to be able to afford a tractor-manicure of the beach every night; the income from the rental contract of the Beach Bars flows into your coffers from April until October. And you have even funded rubbish collectors, who walk past the single empty lifebelt post every week, cleaning those parts that your tractor cannot reach; ironically, they even clean the same rocks over which that poor unconscious man was dragged; I doubt he appreciated it. BUT NO LIFEBELT. NO DEFIBRILLATOR.
Ambulances were unable to access the walkway because of parked cars Despite the regular casualties Playa Bosque has absolutely no rescue equipment to hand
NO BUOYANCY AID. NO SAFETY ROPE.
NADA - NOTHING! In fairness, on closer inspection, someone in the Townhall has had the foresight to install 2 emergency access signs. It is unfortunate that they are in the wrong place, as there is no access to the treacherous rocks from here. In fact, there is partial access only to the Lifeguard cabin, which remains locked and unattended between, I believe, the 10 months from September to July. Well, Mr Mayor, I hope you and your family never do find yourselves on Playa Bosque, with one of your siblings on the point of drowning. I hope you It would appear that ambulance staff are not never have to endure the sense of help- aware of the correct routes by which to lessness, or witness a relative or any access many local beaches other drowning human being raising an arm as a last, desperate plea for help, too exhausted, any longer, to cry out loud. I wonder if there is any sense of collective moral culpability or even civic responsibility at your Townhall, Mr Mayor… and I wonder too, how many more tourists have to drown on Playa Bosque before you act….. STILL, AT AT LEAST YOUR BEACH IS CLEAN!

ARRESTS AFTER 5000 DRUMS OF WASTE DISCOVERED
Agents from Murcia’s Guardia Civil have detained 5 employees of an industrial waste company after 1,000 tonnes of waste was found to have been illegally dumped. They have been charged with offense against natural resources and the environment. Investigators from the Service for the Protection of Nature (SEPRONA) of the Guardia Civil, carried out two inspections from which they took samples of the waste buried illegally in the ground and dumped in storm drains. It is estimated that in total the company under investigation, Industriales del Valle de Escombreras-Cartagena, have buried between 4,000 and 5,000 drums of waste. It is thought that the toxicity of some of the drums, poses a risk to the health of both people to the environment. The investigation began last year following a surveillance operation by the Public Safety Unit (USECIC) in la zona industrial del Valle de Escombreras de Cartagena, where the alleged illegal handling of industrial waste was detected by an organisation that should have been dedicated to the treatment and waste management of these products. Once they had ascertained that there was a possible case of environmental crime, SEPRONA began an exhaustive investigation to check for abnormalities that could cause ecological damage to the
environment. These investigations were carried out in conjunction with experts from la Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura, who twice inspected the company premises taking away with them samples, which after analysis, found that large amount of the waste was not being treated properly. Experts have said that there were significant economic benefits to be had from the absence of proper treatment to the waste, ignoring the health and safety measures which saw many of the liquids simply disposed off through the storm drains into the public water system. Having gathered together the necessary evidence, the Civil Guard has arrested five men, all employees of the company, on suspicion of crimes against natural resources and the environment. Those arrested are all Spanish nationals aged between 39 and 65 years and are now awaiting the start of proceedings being brought before the Court of Instruction No. 5 of Cartagena (Murcia).

POSTAL VOTING Following complaints of irregularities by the PSOE and the APTCe, two members of Torrevieja’s Judicial Police have begun to gather information on Postal Voting in the city following the recent Municipal Elections. The protests surround votes cast by members of a local old people’s home who are said to have been influenced by unsupervised visits from members of the PP on the morning that their postal votes were being completed.
CLEANING THE SEA BED A two day diving course was held last weekend for ten members of Orihuela’s Civil Protection Agency with the aim of using the successful students to clean up area’s of the sea bed on the Orihuela Costa during the coming summer months. The first such occasion will take place on 4 July when the divers will remove rubbish from the sea floor in and around the Aguamarina area.
TAXI PROTEST Over 4500 Taxi Drivers in the Community are being ‘invited’ to strike by their leaders for 1 hour on 1 July in protest at the lack of controls that still are enabling illegal taxi’s to extensively operate at El Altet airport. However, the meeting held in Benidorm last Monday was attended by only a handful of drivers so it is not clear just how much influence the vote will have.

SPAIN’S LITTLE ‘PRINCE BRAT’ We’ve had the rumoured affairs of former King Juan Carlos, the ongoing fraud trial of Princess Cristina. Well now it appears that the next generation of Spanish Royals are trying to get in on the act. On the evidence of the tantrum that he threw at a Madrid leisure park last week, Fourth in line to the Spanish throne, Felipe Juan Froilán de Todos los Santos de Marichalar y Borbón, known as Frolián, would seem to have all the signs of growing into yet another spoilt brat Not wanting to stand in a line along with us mere commoners, and suggesting that it was his birthright to do so, the little prince attempted to jump the queue on one of the park’s more popular rides, but as he tried to push in he received a ticking off from a school teacher who was also waiting in line along with his students. According to a report in Spanish newspaper El Economista he promptly declared "I’m fourth in line to Froilan, 4th in line to the Spanish throne
the Spanish throne." The ride attendant then joined in then responding that being fourth in line to the Spanish throne did not mean he could push in line and get on the ride before the other visitors, who had been patiently queuing. It was then that he threw his toys out of the pram making a racist slur at a young Chinese boy who also told him off for not queuing, shouting, "You shut up, you f...ing chino." Spanish media reported that the prince was accompanied by several friends and a security guard. He eventually calmed down and moved away from the ride. Unfortunately, as he continues to build a reputation as a royal bad boy, young Froilán seems to be hitting the headlines on far too many occasions, for the wrong reasons. When he was 6-years-old, he famously kicked one of his female cousins at King Felipe and Queen Letizia’s wed-
ding. After his parents got divorced, his behaviour is then said to have gone downhill. Two and a half years ago he was kicked out of school for failing his end of year exams twice and in 2012 when he was just 14 years of age he shot himself in the foot (literally) while out hunting with his father Jaime de Marichalar. During his last family holiday, he allegedly headbutted his cousin Paul and then tried to stab him with an iron skewer. But as with all rotten and spoiled children however, we can’t really totally blame the children, in this case the young prince as much of the responsibility must surely be put firmly at the feet of his parents.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
John, Paul, George, Ringo and Thor Its always good to hear of new visitors enjoying our wonderful island. However, I guess it is even better to learn about a resident that has been lurking on the island for thousands of years; not the same one, of course, but a family member. No, I am not talking about some ancient drag queen, who is suddenly discovered in an embalmed condition in the cellar of a long forgotten show-bar in Playa del Ingles, but a new species of beetle. Love them or hate them, beetles (not drag queens) are all part of the Canary Islands' package of experiences, alongside cockroaches, millipedes and spiders. This new species of beetle is called Oromia thoracica, not the catchiest name I grant you, but the people who study such things can be a tad boring when it comes to catchy sounding names. It is a blind weevil that lives beneath the depths of the Agaete Valley, to the northwest of Gran Canaria. This area has some of the oldest soil on the island, somewhere between 5 and 23 million years old, but it is hard to be accurate about such matters, which can be irritating for those who like detail. This new beetle, now commonly known as Thor, popped
into the radar in the subsoil in this fertile valley about six years ago. Traps were duly laid, but Thor and his kind are canny creatures that deceived the investigators until recently when five of them fell into a trap following a heavy night out on the town. When they awoke two days later, it was too late, because the scientists had discovered them and, sadly, they were popped into a collecting jar. Now this is the part where it all gets a little personal. What Thor lacks in size, since he is not a big boy at less that five millimetres long, he gains in his extremities that are longer and flatter than his cousins. This is actually a very useful attribute, because it means that Thor and his family can adapt more easily to life in their underground environment and narrow cracks, where headspace is at a bit of a premium. Thor and his family are blind, but are all dressed in rather natty reddish-brown jackets, which is typical of subsoil insects. The clever thing about Thor is his thorax, which extends over his head as a sort of heart shaped shield, perfect for the more romantically inclined mate, which makes him unique from other species, but his opening line of "Love me, love my thorax", can be a little daunting to a potential mate. When it comes to fine dining, forget it, because Thor indulges in the rotting roots of bushes prevalent in the Agaete Valley, which makes him cheap, if not boring, to feed. Still, if you are looking for a cheap night out... Apparently, the underground world of Gran Canaria is still a bit of a mystery, but there are many more surprises in store, to which I am sure many of our visitors will tes-

DRONING ON The latest weapon in the fight against cheating for China's allimportant university entrance exam is a six-propeller drone. The drone flew over two testing centres in Luoyang city in central China's Henan province to scan for any unusual signals being sent to devices smuggled by students taking the annual test. However, a Henan province news website said no such signals were detected on Sunday, the first day of the test. All Chinese high school graduates must take the test, and their scores are the key criterion for which tier of university they can enter.

I am told that a new species is discovered on the island every six days or so, which is an amazing statistic. Meanwhile, I wish Thor and his family well, but he should warn the rest of his species to keep away from the traps that lie in wait in the Agaete Valley. GUARDIA JOINS MED RESCUE MISSION
We see regular reports of British and Italian operations in the Mediterranean as they continue to rescue thousands of North African immigrants who have been trapped on boats run by Libyan smuggling gangs. While British Defence Secretary Michael Fallon slammed the rest of Europe for not doing enough as Italy and Britain bares the brunt of the rescue workload he might well have had a thought for the crew of the Guardia Civil (Servicio Maritimo) vessel Rio Segura
that was busy rescuing 589 immigrants from Italian waters south of the island of Lampedusa The rescue was carried out by the Guardia Civil in conjunction with a vessel from the British Border Force, both of which are deployed on Operation Triton in Italian territorial waters. The 589 immigrants were in two boats, one of a timber construction with about 500 people on board and another rubber dinghy with about 100 people crammed inside. The larger vessel, 30 meters long and 5 meters wide, carried no identification nor was it flying any flag. Transfer of the immigrants to the Rio Segura was carried out by two Guardia dinghy’s together with a much larger British landing craft manned by personnel from the Royal Marines. The immigrants were taken to the Italian port of Reggio Calabria where they were processed, receiving medical examinations, food and a change of clothing.
MENU DEL DIA FOR JUST 4 EUROS A Spanish Ration pack
I am sure that those of you who are former members of the armed forces will look back on operational military rations with mixed emotions. Most popular were the 24 hour packs which were required to provide one man with enough food to last for up to one day, and the ten man pack, a much larger assortment, which was the main pack used for operational purposes, said to provide a daily intake of in excess of 4000 calories for each of its recipients. Compo was the name by which the provisions were popularly known or Ration Composite General Service if you want to be more formal. I remember the steak and kidney pudding and the oatmeal blocks with particular affection, and those quirky little tin openers, and who could forget, of course, the shiny sheets of toilet paper, although I have yet to meet a man, or a woman, who every used them. I personally found the rations very good and always managed to put on some weight when I went away on exercise or manoeuvre with my unit. Quite whether that would be the case with the Spanish Military Ration Pack I don’t know. Squid, which seems to be a regular ingredient, has never been one of my favourite meals. But the packs are quite comprehensive and the military I have spoken to recently feel that they certainly serve the purpose. Unlike the British packs, which are now put together by scientists at the Defence Fuel and Food Services Team down in deepest Bristol, the
Spanish Ration Packs are the responsibility of the Corps of Engineers, so the extra constituents, such as the mandatory water purifying tablets, 3 solid fuel tablets, matches and a small stove for cooking, would come as no surprise, but I can’t say that I was particularly excited by the menu. Designed to provide each of it’s recipient with enough fuel to withstand enemy fire on a full stomach, the dexterity and geometric skills necessary to open some of it’s sachets and cans would be more akin to those you might expect to acquire in order to complete a Tetris challenge. Presumably each also comes with an added extra, a stick of dynamite or a very big mallet. But even once you get in there the selection leaves rather a lot to be desired. With an expiry date deep into 2018, as well as the extras already mentioned, my pack contained a can of pate with black pepper, a can of green beans, one sachet of vegetable soup, a can of squid, peaches in syrup and two sachets containing powder to make an isotonic drink. Not that appetising really, although I have eaten worse in some restaurants and paid a darned sight more than the 4 euro that each pack is purported to cost. But the strange thing is that they are extremely well received! And when it comes to exchanging packs in joint exercises with foreign military (we have all been there at one time or another) the Spanish ration packs are in some (although I wouldn’t say great) demand. Personally give me the good old compo 10 man pack, although I suppose in a desert battlefield scenario the peaches in the Spanish rations would always do a job as camouflage!

NEW DAWN FOR LOCAL POLITICS n one of the most eagerly awaited weekends of the political world, Saturday saw a new picture painted for many local town halls, as coalitions and collaborations were formed, with, in many, the main onus being on removing the Partido Popular from power, and looking to the future of a new political framework. One of the most eagerly anticipated results was in Torrevieja, where the PP lost their absolute majority after over 2 decades. But it was still possible for them to retain power through coalition, with the most likely partners being the Ciudadanos group, as the other main players, the PSOE and Los Verdes, have both been instrumental in the fall from grace of the PP through the filing and awareness of anti-corruption court cases. It was in 1988 that Pedro Ángel Hernández Mateo of the PP came to power as Mayor, replacing Joaquín García Sánchez of the PSOE. The PP then remained in power, under the management of Hernández Mateo, who is now in prison having been found guilty of corruption and facing further charges. Eduardo Dolón Sánchez then took over the office in the last elections of 2011. Now, after 27 years in power, Torrevieja wakes up this morning with a new Mayor, and a new political power at the helm, a coalition of parties who collaborated to free Torrevieja of decades of PP rule. Having received the majority of votes in Saturday´s mayoral election, José Manuel Dolón of the Los Verdes green party is the new mayor of Torrevieja.
I
Torrevieja’s new mayor, José Manuel Dolón of Los Verdes Ciudadanos had played their cards very close to their chest until the last minute, announcing their intentions late on Friday evening, saying that they have “decided to give their vote to the Los Verdes, as 62% of citizens have requested a change and we will facilitate it”. However, councillor Pilar Gómez Magán reiterated that Ciudadanos will not join the government, but would remain in opposition, ·but we will work hard, now there was no other way to do it.” They then stood by their commitment and voted for the green mayor, as did the PSOE, Los Verdes, Sueña Torrevieja, APTCe and IU, giving him 14 votes against the 11 received for Eduardo Dolón, all from his own party members, but not enough to retain power. José Manuel Dolón will now sit in power for the next two years, when the position will rotate and the new head of the PSOE, Fanny Serrano, will take over office for the remaining two years of the administrative period. During his inaugural speech, José Manuel Dolón said that he will “work with all the people who make up the corporation, right or left, as I value all the seats in the plenary hall”. He also said that he will assume the functions of Mayor “with all the humility and simplicity” that he can, since to him, “politics is nothing but a commitment to serve the people and for that I hope to have the cooperation of all the people who form the new administration and the people who are now going to play the opposition, which is an important mission, and with all of you, those who wanted change and those who want to collaborate on this new journey”. He summed up with the statement, “in a few months or a few years we will tell if this change has paid off”, concluding, “let the future be ours”.

AGE CONCERN ANNUAL SUMMER FAIR On Saturday 6th June the Annual Age Concern Summer Fair was held in glorious sunshine. The Fair was well attended with visitors being entertained by the Dayamantes Singing Group and raised the fabulous sum of 3,281.20 Euros. The President of Age Concern, Maureen Payne, thanked all those who had donated prizes for the Grand Raffle and all of the volunteers who helped make the day a success.
For his part, the ousted former mayor, Eduardo Dolón, also appeared at a press conference at the PP headquarters, describing the actions of the Ciudadanos group as a “pantomime”. Eduardo Dolón said that “there has been no time for negotiation”, and stressed that he did not want to “retain power at all costs” but has vowed to return to power soon as “it is impossible” for a hexpartite government to work, on account of their differing opinions and trends. He concluded by saying that he leaves the position feeling “tremendously positive” about the economic situation.
MABS FASHION SHOW SUCCESS
Pilar Gomez Magan and Paqui Parra of Ciudadamos In the wake of the announcement, there was praise aplenty for the new found collaboration. Ciudadanos Torrevieja took to Facebook to praise the decision and comment how their councillors, Pilar Gomez Magan and Paqui Parra, have shown their commitment of regeneration of democracy, transparency, anti-corruption and all that Ciudadanos strive to achieve, congratulating the new mayor and all political groups. José Serna Lorente, another former political critic of the PP and sportsman who is currently competing in South America, commented, “What joy, today my city, Torrevieja... Wakes up with a new government. It's time to open the windows of the city, raise the carpet and breathe in the new air.” Concluding, “Viva Torrevieja! Long live the new corporation! Congratulations to the greens, PSOE, Sueña Torrevieja, Ciudadanos, Apetece and IU for making possible this historic moment.” Meanwhile, in Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana from the Partido Popular has won the Mayoral vote there, replacing the Los Verdes mayor of the previous administration, gaining his 11 votes and so still ruling in a minority. Of the twenty municipalities of the Vega Baja, sixteen had absolute majorities in the vote, the remaining six being left in the air. All areas will now see their governments formed and roles assigned. Other highlights from around the area include votes and agreements made. Across the Valencia region, the PSOE now sit in 226 mayoral roles, the PP in 164. Antonio Pérez of the PSOE is the mayor of Rojales, José Luis Sáez of the PSOE rules in Guardamar, Ignacio Ramos of the PSOE is head of Pilar de la Horadada, Jaime Pérez of the PSOE is mayor of Almoradí, Miguel Ángel Gambín from Ciudadanos is ruling in Cox and Ángel Sáez of the PP will govern San Miguel.
The annual Spring Fashion Show was held last month at Las Claras Centre in Los Narejos, Los Alcazares and was once again a huge success. The atmosphere was tremendous with Wendy Grant playing saxaphone and acting as MC for the day while the models got ready. Zigi introduced the models and described the outfits they were wearing - all were available for sale at the event. A fantastic total of €1328.67 was raised. Evelyn Campbell who organised the event thanked everyone for attending and also thanked all the models and helpers for giving their valuable time freely to make the event so successful. The next fashion event will be in November.

SITE CLEARED FOR TORRY TOWN HALL EXTENSION The Torrevieja Planning Department has put out to tender the demolition of two buildings adjoining the Town Hall at a proposed cost of 450,000 euros. Details of the technical specifications were published on the Town Hall website last week. The whole process is to be completed within eight months although the current mayor, Eduardo Dolon, said that he hoped the successful contractor would conclude the works within a much shorter period of time. The two properties to be demolished were formerly houses occupied by priests from the Inmaculada Concepción church with the plot vacated being used to accommodate a three-story building containing municipal services that are scattered across the town in rented offices. The first phase of the project will consist of the demolition of the existing buildings and the erection of the ground floor of a new building covering an area of more than five hundred square meters.
The project will see the creation of an internal courtyard which could be accessed from the street, connecting both the main building and the old City Hall directly across from the Plaza de la Constitution. A courtyard garden will also be provided by creating a space that could also serve as a waiting room for people who will be using the new administrative facility. The deadline for submission of tenders will be 26 days from the publication of the original notice in the Provincial Gazette, which the mayor expects to appear in the coming days. Eduardo Dolon said that he hopes the works can get underway after the summer as they have already been delayed by over a year because of technical problems.

STREET ART SMARTENS UP ORIHUELA Orihuela councillors Rosa Martinez and Manuel Gallud were out on the streets last week looking at some of the ‘street art’ that has been produced over the last six months by young local artists under the direction of graffiti artist Javier Agulló. Cllr for Employment Manuel Gallud said that the work is "the culmination of an Employment Plan that has been developed by the Town Hall over the last six months and has involved the hiring of 26 people who have been used to smarten up and improve the area around the local sierra, mountain belt surrounding the Fundación Cultural Miguel Hernández. Agulló said that, when performing his work, he was constantly thinking of Migue Hernandez, sitting at the foot of mountains years ago while writing his poems. "I've drawn humbly and my colors represent the ideas that he provided," he added.

DRIVING CLASSIC CARS ON SPANISH ROADS We have been asked by a number of classic car owners and associations about the laws that refer specifically to this type of vehicle and what provisions the drivers must make when driving on Spanish roads. Royal Decree 1247/1995, deals with the reglamento de vehículos históricos, rules for historic vehicles, or classic cars, under article 10 of the Normas de circulación. First and foremost, unless rules are specifically in place for this type of vehicle, classic cars are governed by the same laws and rules as normal vehicles, including the requirement of liability insurance. The rules relating to the technical inspection and registration are also applicable, as per normal vehicles. The period of the technical inspection also remains the same, unless otherwise indicated in the official report. Those vehicles which, on account of their age or constructive characteristics, do not have lights or indicators as are normally required by law, they are not allowed to travel between sunset and sunrise, or in circumstances which would normally require the use of these lights and indicators. Historic vehicles that are not able to exceed the speed of 40 kilometres per hour should drive on the shoulder, if practicable and it is sufficient, or, alternatively, as close as possible to the right outside edge of the roadway, except when overtaking or turning left, manoeuvres which may force other drivers to abruptly change the direction or speed of their vehicles. Historic vehicles are not allowed on the motorway if they are unable to reach a speed of at least 60 kilometres per hour. The Dirección General de Tráfico also reserves the right to prohibit classic cars on certain dates and routes, if they are not able to exceed the speed of 80 kilometres per hour. As for situation when classic cars can travel on the roads as a group,
Annex II of the Reglamento General de Circulación, article 32 of section 3 details Participación de vehículos históricos and refers to the question of group activities. Vehicles categorised as classic cars under Royal Decree 1247/1995, or over 25 years old and in numbers greater than 10, and with a speed of less than 50 kilometres per hour on average, as well as participating in events or demonstrations, rallies, competitions or, in general, any kind of event in which there is established classification on the basis of vehicle movement, either in terms of speed or regularity, will require administrative authorisation.

CELEBRATING NAVAL HISTORY IN CARTAGENA A week of celebrations commemorating el Día de las Fuerzas Armadas, or Armed Forces Day, came to a close at the weekend, with thousands of people having had an insight into some of the duties performed by the Spanish military. Locally, the Orihuela local police arranged a special event in one of the municipality´s smaller villages, but there´s no question that the main highlight was in Cartagena, where there were numerous static displays as the navy opened up some of their ships for the public to visit. The King of Spain, Felipe VI, presided over the main event in Madrid, the first time he did so as King, and also visited Cartagena on Thursday, celebrating the centenary of the Arma de Submarina, and unveiling a commemorative plaque.

RAQUEL LOOKS SET FOR ANOTHER WONDERFUL SUMMER It looks like being another successful summer for Raquel Pena and her amazing Flamenco Dance Troupe. This iconic dancing star’s own performances have mesmerised U.S. Presidents and Britain’s royals over the years and now the amazing troupe of her current dancers, all trained and choreographed personally by Raquel Pena, can be seen performing three times a week at the Rebate Restaurant, and really should not be missed. Believe me; the restaurant is exceedingly fortunate to have been chosen as a place of performance by Raquel Pena. You can see their amazing shows on Wednesday and Sunday lunchtimes and on Friday evenings where their heel work, astonishingly controlled in rhythm, dynamics and sound, often race to tempos that seem to defy the threshold of audible speed This really is a taste of the very best of authentic Spain. POSITIVE TRENDS IN TORREVIEJA AND ORIHUELA PROPERTY SALES The market for second homes on the Alicante coast has started to show a positive trend, especially in the towns of Torrevieja and Orihuela, mainly due to foreign demand, while in Castellon and Valencia a "phase adjustment" has been maintained. The latest report on the housing market along the Valencian coast, prepared by the company Tinsa, concludes that Valencia as a whole "is beginning to wake up," except, that is, in a few certain areas of Alicante, where there is an exceptionally large amount of residual stock. The regional director of Tinsa, Jose Antonio Lopez, said at a press conference last week that the prices in eight locations recorded annual price rises in the first quarter of the year: Jávea (11.2%), the Pobla de Farnals (5.3%), Benidorm (3.6%), Orihuela (1.6%) , Torrevieja (1.4%) and Elche (1%) as well as Benicarlo and Denia, where there has been a very slight increase of 0.5% and 0.2% respectively. As for foreign demand in the province of Alicante, in 2014 the British market grew by 41% over the previous year, 22% Belgian, Swedish 7% and France with 15%, while the Russian market showed a small decline. Also in this area the Chinese market, is beginning to emerge with growth of 63% and 243 transactions in
2014. Orihuela, Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada are among the five municipalities with the most building permits, with the first two places also among the five with the highest number of purchases. Promoter activity has begun to pick up in the Region, and is being especially aimed at foreign buyers who demand high quality housing with a preference for anything on the beachfront. Specifically, Oliva (Valencia), Orihuela, Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja, Torre de la Horadada, Alfas del Pi, Denia, Villajoyosa, Altea, Calpe and Benissa.

BRAINBASHER Three people check into a hotel. They each pay £30 to the manager and then go up to their room. The manager suddenly remembers that the room rate is £25 and gives £5 to the bellboy to return to the three guests. On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that £5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets £2 and gives £1 to each person. Now each person paid £10 and got back £1. So they paid £9 each, totalling £27. The bellboy has £2, totalling £29. Where is the missing £1? Answer below.....
Solution on Page 39
ANSWER TO BRAINBASHER. We have to be careful what we are adding together. Originally, they paid £30, they each received back £1, they now have only paid £27. Of this £27, £25 went to the manager for the room and £2 went to the bellboy.

STR OKE AGES BRAIN BY EIGHT YEARS A stroke occurs when a blockage to the brain's blood supply occurs. Stroke symptoms (for example, loss of arm or leg function or slurred speech) signify a medical emergency because without treatment, blood deprived brain cells quickly become damaged or die resulting in brain injury, serious disability, or death.
Stroke had a similar effect on brain function in both blacks and whites in the study. But previous research has found that rates of memory and thinking problems in older blacks are generally twice that of whites. These new findings show that stroke doesn't account for that racial disparity as people age, and also highlight the importance of stroke prevention, the researchers said.
Well now it is claimed that a stroke robs the brain of nearly eight years, impairing memory and slowing thinking speed, a new study says. University of Michigan researchers analyzed national data from more than 4,900 black and white Americans aged 65 and older who underwent tests of memory and thinking speed between 1998 and 2012. Test results among those who suffered a stroke fell as much as if they had suddenly aged 7.9 years, according to the study in the July issue of the journal Stroke.
"As we search for the key drivers of the known disparities in cognitive [mental] decline between blacks and whites, we focus here on the role of 'health shocks' such as stroke," study author Dr. Deborah Levine, an assistant professor in the University of Michigan medical school, said in a university news release. "Although we found that stroke does not explain the difference, these results show the amount of cognitive aging that stroke brings on, and therefore the importance of stroke prevention to reduce the risk of cognitive decline," she added. Ways to reduce stroke risk include: controlling blood pressure and cholesterol; not smoking; physical activity; and controlling blood sugar in diabetes.

OLDER CHILDREN NEED A BEDTIME ROUTINE, TOO By the time most children start school, parents have established a set bedtime and a bedtime routine. However, that does not mean that all children are getting the quality sleep they should. Older children still need a consistent bedtime and wind-down routine in much the same way as infants and toddlers do. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises: School-aged children should take a few minutes every night to tidy up the bedroom before bed. Middle school-aged children may have a less strict bedtime routine on the weekends, but wake time should not vary by much. Bedtime routines should be flexible, but impose limits on bedtime delays. Gradually give your child more independence over the bedtime routine as the child grows older.

BRITISH CONSUL PRAISES CHARITIES’ More Expats urged to Volunteer Local expat charities are working hard to support both British and Spanish nationals, British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris saw in a daylong visit to the north of Alicante province this week. Mrs Morris spent a morning in the HELP centres in La Xara, and was impressed to see the work that the charity is doing to deliver respite and residential care for those in need. In addition to the work that they do to help British citizens, HELP Marina Alta and other charities also fundraise for their local communities so that all nationalities can benefit. Recently, for example, HELP purchased hospital beds for local GP surgeries and provided funds to Fontilles care
home.
Consul Sarah-Jane Morris and Vice Consul Lloyd Milen with Expat volunteers
Mrs Morris said: “The work that these charities carry out is really fantastic. Not only are HELP Marina Alta supporting British nationals who need help, they are also fundraising for Spanish charities, such as the Fontilles care home. This is partnership in action – Brits supporting each other and also giving something back to the local Spanish community.” She added: “As always, all the local charities are crying out for volunteers, so I would really encourage anyone who has some spare time to get involved. It can be incredibly rewarding work to help others.”
ANNETTE GETS HER JUST DESSERTS

OKLAHOMA YIPPEE!!
Studio 32 have done it again, delighting the audience, with three sell out performances of Oklahoma. The lead roles of Curly and Laurey, were brilliantly portrayed by Rae Daniel andVerity Jo Spencer Hall with exceptional supporting roles from Jenni Hardy -Rooneyas the feisty Aunt Eller, the flirtatious Ado Annie played by Bev McEwan, along withthe talented Mark Lord as Will Parker. Special credit must go to the gifted Mike Oates, who played the pedlar Ali Hakim and to Dan Ullah who played the mysterious sinister Jud Fry. These were well supported by a host of dancing girls, cowboys, farmers wives and girlfriends, all going to make this a truly authentic and fantastic
show. Oklahoma was incredibly produced by Susan Zillah Wilson, backed by a dedicated back stage crew and Studio 32 members . The next production for Studio32,the popular Pantomime Dick Whittington, willbe staged in November, when it is anticipated that another large donation will be made to local charities to add to the 2,000 euros presented this time, to the Alzheimer’s association and San Fulgencio town hall. If you are interested in becoming a member of Studio 32 in any capacity , there will be an open day at Casa Ventura ,San Luis, on Wednesday 17th. June between 4.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m.
KICKING THE HABIT A Catalan sister, buoyed by recent municipal elections that saw the housing activist Ada Colau voted in as Barcelona’s first female mayor, wants to hang up her habit and lead a leftist coalition that could bring the same sort of change to the region in which she lives. The Benedictine nun, Harvard-educated Teresa Forcades, is said to be readying herself to step out of the monastery and into the political ring. “Criticisms are to be expected”, she said. “ I follow somebody called Jesus and he had a lot of that.”
RAJOY’S DECLINING SUPPORT
The Consul spent the rest of the day in the north of Alicante visiting focus groups
Annette English, who with her husband, David, is the official fund-raiser for The Children's Care Home in Elche, was the lucky winner of a Mediterranean cruise at the latest Charity Night at El Alto La Dolores Restaurant in Guardamar. Annette and Dave work tirelessly in a number of roles to support the children in the home. They attend almost all the fund-raisers arranged for their charity, but on this occasion, they had the night off, as the event was in aid of Torrevieja Stroke Support. They truly deserve their prize – made more special by the fact that it was Dave's birthday Torrevieja Stroke Support also benefited from the night, which raised 804 euros, which will go a long way in helping them support stroke victims. On Wednesday, 1st July, WOODY will again be entertaining diners at this Restaurant, and helping to raise funds for The Alzheimers Association (AFA). Woody is one of the most talented and popular entertainers on the Costa Blanca, and tickets to see him sell out very quickly. At just 10 euros, including a 2 course meal, this offers excellent value.

HAH MAR MENOR CHATTERS GROUP INVITE YOU TO …… Have you ever had two different answers to the same question? Or conflicting advice on the same situation? How can you be sure that the info you get is correct? To help you find out the facts the next Speaker at Chatters, on Wednesday 17th June at The Pasty Shack in the Mercadona Precinct, Los Alcazares, will be from The Guardia Civil. This presentation will be about how Expats can enjoy life in Spain, safely, securely and legally, followed by an opportunity to ask your own questions, and make sure the facts are correct. To help us all understand there will be a Translator on hand. Starting at 10.30 for 11am we will have the usual free refreshments followed by Games and a Quiz after which we will hand the floor to the Guest Speaker. Chatters is a monthly Help At Home function designed to help Expats meet new friends and get answers to questions. Everyone is welcome but remember to come early to make sure of your seat.
A MURDER MYS TERY Whatever happened to horrible Rosemary? Somebody dun ‘er in! But who? Newly formed theatre group ACTS will be staging their first production, Cafe Murder, at The Club, Quesada, on Friday 24th July, and tickets for this supper/theatre are already on sale at the venue. Members of ACTS are all experienced actors, some of whom are former members of the much missed Dramatic Licence, and they hope to grow the group into a viable company. They are anxious to attract new members to act, direct or work back stage. All that is needed is the enthusiasm to work as part of a team, and to enjoy taking part in productions....so why not contact Tony Goddard on newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk for more information.
Half of Spain's conservative voters would prefer a different candidate to lead the ruling People's Party (PP) in the upcoming general election, rather than PM Mariano Rajoy according to a poll. When the poll was widened to the general public and not just PP voters, 70% said they would prefer if PP's candidate was not Rajoy, while only 22% of the public said they thought the incumbent prime minister was the right person to lead the PP.
IN CUBA TO STAY Iberia has returned to Cuba "to stay," the Spanish airline's president said after arriving in the country on the carrier's first Madrid-Havana flight in more than two years. Luis Gallego was among 346 passengers aboard the Airbus A340/600, Iberia's largest aircraft, which was chosen for the inaugural flight in response to the traveling public's enthusiastic embrace of the renewal of the route, the airline said. Iberia will operate five flights a week between Madrid and Havana using Airbus A330s.
THE HOLY TRINITY Spain’s El Celler de Can Roca was crowned the world’s best restaurant last week winning praise for the “collective genius” of the three brothers who run it. It was the second time the Girona eatery has topped the World’s 50 Best Restaurant awards in London, after taking the No. 1 spot in 2013. Joan, Jordi and Josep Roca each have their own specialty: The first is head chef, the second creates the desserts, while the third sibling is in charge of the wine. The awards, run by trade magazine Restaurant, lauded the brothers’ combined talents as a “holy trinity.”

CARP-R-US CLUB NEWS This week the Clubs anglers were supposed to have fished the Town Centre area of the river Segura in Murcia. But after receiving written confirmation of this booking from the Federation, it appears that the work has come to a halt and is not finished. This contract was due to be finished in April. So the match had to be moved to El Bosquet as no other venue had been given to us. Due to the heavy rain that fell at the start of the match ,it was decided to abandon it after 45 minutes as the tracks were becoming waterlogged and dangerous to drive on. Next weeks match is a return to the Embalse de Beniarres where 2 weeks ago the average catch per angler was over 13kg each. This venue has a mid way break for a weight in, as the oxygen levels there are always on the low side, and is unsporting to keep the fish in a net for 5 hours. Pegs will be at 8.00am sharp. Fishing 9.00 to 2.00pm. Thanks must go to Steve and Tom from our club and members of the Lime Bar that have done some excellent peg clearing on the Eden. The next Club meeting will be on Sunday the 21st of June with the Committee at 10.30 followed by the General meeting at 11.00am. Also the cost is 1 Euro per person and teams to a maximum of 6 may take part. To any one that is interested, you can now down load the application form for a Valencia Licence from the Clubs web site at www.carp-rus.weebly.com . Info on obtaining Valencia and Murcian licences is also there The Clubs home is at the Bar El Alto La Dolores which is just off the N332 between La Mata and Guardamar. MONTEMAR BOWLS CLUB
By Steve Hibberd
By Sheila Cammack.
This years Tues night premier 20 league saw Greenlands face San Luis in week 1. At home, P Lockley won the singles 21-15, and the trips team of J Giddings, plus J & J Oliver, triumphed 27-16. Over at Casa Ventura, singles was won by S Heath (21-20), the pairing of S Johnson & M Edwards were victorious by 16-14, and finally M Dewar, D Thompson, F Edwards & S Hibberd won 13-11 in the rinks. Therefore, a very pleasing opening day victory was secured by GBC, giving them a score of 10-8, just losing out on overall shots by only 3. The very next morning produced mixed results for our 2 VCL teams. Mimosa were at home to Horadada, and certainly made home advantage count, as they romped to a 10-2 victory. Both ladies and gents singles were won by M Fryatt (21-18), and P Lockley (21-18), respectively. Mr & Mrs Dewar were victorious in the pairs (21-17), but the days special award goes to the rinks team of D Fryatt, D Thompson, J Wray & V Mahomet (29-15), for their hot shot on the 14th end. In complete contrast, it was a seasons first defeat at San Miguel for Jasmines, and how! Playing against the Sheriffs, only M Edwards (2116) in the mens singles, gained points, as the team went down to a 210 defeat. On Fri, Gladiators took a huge step towards survival in SABA trips league A div. At home to lowly San Miguel Christians, these 5 rinks contributed to a vital 11-3 victory: C Thomas, S Stead, B Collins 1919. D Lawton, A Brown, S Westall 20-5. B Doran, J Westall, M Fryatt 20-13. B Miller, L Morris, T Hill 23-11. S Mahomet, L Miller, S Heath 27-13. Just as pleasing was the superb victory achieved by Glosters. 4TH CONSECUTIVE WIN FOR GB&I AT VISTABELLA
This was the fourth year of the Ryder Cup style competition between a Great Britain and Ireland team and European team. The Vistabella course was in very good condition and the greens at a high standard following pre-season maintenance. Each team consisted of 28 players each and the format was a modified matchplay with the winning players scoring a point per hole, and a half for a half, so having a maximum of eighteen points. The first 10 matches were singles match play playing off maximum handicaps and the remaining 9 matches being fourball better ball ? the difference, again a point for winning the hole. The champions would be the team with the best total number of points from both the singles and pairs. It was an early “shot gun” start for the 56 players, with the weather just about perfect for golf, if a tad warm, and the course was set up well, with tricky pin positions for an exciting competition. During the competition all the players were provided with a Bocadillo and water by clubhouse restaurant.
With a new Europe Captain, Phil Smith It was obvious that this year it was going to be a hard fought match; the ten singles matches were all close with GB&I gaining a small lead of just three points 91.5 to 88.5. (5.5 matches to 4.5) The highest score was Martin Oakley (GB&I) with a 13.5 to 4.5 win, followed by Carol Firth (GB&I) 13.0 to 5. So it was all down to the pairings, and the first two matches went GB&I’s way with wins for two of the pairings of Andy Drinkall/Ray Muttocks and Rodney Smith/Mike Smith, But Europe came back with two matches the pairings of Roger Packer/Dennis Hart and Uehara Shigieru/Juan Gabriel making things more respectable for Europe. This made for a nail biting finish. But it all changed in the next five matches with GB&I taking four of them, GB&I’s Captain Ivie Davies among them. The pairings contained Europe’s Captain Phil Smith winning their match with partner Derrie Heywood. The total pairings points score was GB&I 91.5 Europe 70.5 (6 matches to 3)
HAPPY DAYS GOLF SOCIETY By Lubbertus On Tuesday 9th June the society went to The Hacienda Riquelme Golf course for an Absent Friends Pairs Texas Match. The championship standards course, being an 18 holes, par 72, long 6416 yards open course conspired with the very hot weather conditions to test the stamina of the players as much as their golfing skills. But it was a joy for the players offering difficult shots with plenty of bunker hazards, wild grass, olive trees and large lakes to make a hot day very interesting for everyone. On the day the pair of Jack Sheridan and Dave Eadington finished fourth with 74.4 points while pair Steve Dixon and Sophie Eckburge finished just 0.2 points in front with 74.2, how close was that. In second place was the pair Proflus Mistry and Chris Tate who finished on 71.6. However the clear winning pair was Ken Farrow and John McGregor who finished on a very impressive 68.9. The 19th hole was won by Maz and Steve for presenting welcoming refreshment. Happy Days Golf Society Is more than just about golf, it is also about being a social and friendly society. For example the society held a very successful annual dinner for members and guests on the 30th May. To join the Society, or if you just want to learn a little more about them and what they do then contact Steve, or any member of the staff at the Marinasol Restaurant at Cabo Roig and they would be happy to talk to you. The Happy Days Golf Society’s next competition is on 22rd June at El Valle Golf course, so please contact Steve for details.
LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY By Mike Chapman On Saturday we held our Summer Dinner Dance at the Las Ramblas Restaurant where we were well looked after by the Restaurant staff. A really good evening was had by all and many thanks go to all those involved in organising the evening especially Lindsay Forbes, Dee Biggerstaff and Joyce McClusky. We started the week on Monday with a Counter Game where the number of scores needed by each team is not known until you reach the next tee which encourages everyone to play for every point available. The winning team by a clear 8 pts were Dave Pulling, Rod Doel, Ron Phipps and Joyce McClusky. The remaining quarter final game of our Singles Match Play competition was also played which saw Ulrike Barth concede the game to John Collins even though they were level after 18 holes. It must have been John's jovial Geordie banter that ground her and all his other opponents down as he has yet to win a game but finds himself in the semi-final where he will meet Olga Douglas who played extremely well to win against Rod Doel a few days ago. We suggest Olga wears ear plugs when the semi-final takes place! There were only enough players to have one Category on Wednesday for our usual weekly stableford but nevertheless there were some very good scores being returned with Ron Phipps taking top spot with 39 pts on a count back from Brian Green in second. In third place with 38 pts and delighting the handicap secretary was Geoff Biggerstaff who finally receives a long overdue handicap cut. Friedel Knebel was fourth with 35 pts beating Allen McClusky on a count back. There was only one 2 in the 2's Club which was scored by Olga Douglas. On Friday we played a Change Partners which was won by the prematch favourites of Geoff Biggerstaff, Olga and Alan Douglas and Lindsay Forbes with a very good score of 87 pts.
The succesful GB&I team posing with he trophy
So the final score was a win, to GB&I 183 points to Europe 159 points (11? to Europe 7?) who have now won four years in succession. Following a BBQ (thank you Robin) and refreshments on the clubhouse terrace the Vistabella Ryder Cup Trophy was presented to the GB&I Captain Ivie Davies by Golf Manager at Vistabella Golf – Diego Garcia Escolar, he also presented the winning team with individual medals. Thanks to the prize sponsors: Vistabella Golf, Mick
Reeves at Mick the Grip, Quara Group, Marilyn and Simon at La Cosecha Restaurante – Benijofar, Briggita at The Vestry Restaurante – Algorfa, Terry Hewitt at El Tel Golf Products La Manga. Congratulations to all the players for making this competition again such a memorable one and a big thank you to Diego Garcia Escolar – Golf Manager at Vistabella Golf and its very supportive staff for playing their part. The trophy will be displayed in the Vistabella Golf clubhouse, until next year.
PADDY’S POINT GOLF SOCIETY AT LAS COLINAS On Wednesday 10th June 40 players, playing for the McArthur Cup, enjoyed a good day's golf at Las Colinas - our favourite course. The weather was perfect with just enough wind to keep us cool. As always the course was in great condition with the greens running very true and this resulted in some very good scoring. Thank you Ana and staff for your hospitality. Back at Paddy's we enjoyed the food and refreshments - thank you Hazel and all at the pub for looking after our needs. NTP hole 5 - Breege Follard, hole 7 - James Hunter, hole 10 - Elsie Cowie, hole 14 - Elsie Cowie, hole 17 - Mick Rutledge. The two's post was shared by Myra Coull, Marie Fegan, David McBride, Genaro Sanchez and Ollie Teahan. Longest Drive - Steve Hampshire. LIME BAR GOLF SOCIETY, LOS ALTOS.
The venue on the 10th June 2015 was Fond De Lop Golf Cours where twenty-seven members teed off on a very warm and sunny morning. For the majority of the players this was their first visit to the course and hopefully will not be the last. The course was magnificent and in good conditions played well, the only draw back was the greens had recently been ‘hallow tinned’ making putting difficult. The competition was in the stableford format and the scores recorded are as follows. Nearest the pin on the 3rd hole was Steve Cottle, the 8th hole was John MacGregor, 10th hole was Digger, 12th hole (par 3) was Bryan Archer and the 16th hole (par 3) was Arthur Jones.
Bronze Class in 2nd place was Ken Sutton with 30 points. Bronze Class in 1st place was Barry Shawyer with 31 points Silver Class 2nd place was Les Thwaites with a score of 33 points. Silver Class 1st place was Digger with a score of 34 points. Gold Class 2nd place was Arthur Jones with a score of 32 points Gold Class 1st place was Ken Farrow with a score of 39 points. Best guest with 20 points was Bob Sammond. A very good day of golf in pleasant company, with thanks to the committee for organising the event and the bar staff for providing the meal, also to the ladies selling the football draw.

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Around and About the courses - ALTORREAL ’ The pleasant golf course of Altorreal, designed by Dave Thomas, was opened to the pubic in 1994 and is located in foothills close to Molina de Segura and within one hours travelling time from Alicante and San Javier airports. The large clubhouse has an upper veranda giving excellent views of the 9th and 18th holes and is fitted with glass curtains which can be closed to the elements on ‘chilly’ late winter afternoons. The café bar restaurant offers a wide variety of food and beverage at very affordable prices and in addition the facilities include ample covered parking, shower and changing rooms plus a sauna and a golf shop. There has been a change of ownership at Altorreal in the past 12 months and the new owners have made a number of simple but effective changes to the course and buggy paths which will prevent unnecessary 'wear' in the wetter months and currently a number of new tees are being laid to further improve the golfing experience under the guidance of a management team formerly at La Peraleja. This parkland style course consisting of two ‘loops’ starting and finishing close to the clubhouse with a par of 72 of 6,036 metres (6,640 yards) from the yellow tees. Having played this course on many occasions I have come to the conclusion that it is a risk and reward course and you generally get what you deserve, if you play well you will score well and if you play poorly and hit bad shots you will be punished. Given the undulating nature of the course the designer has used the slopes to ensure that you rarely have a flat lie and has combined this with strategically placed bunkers and water features to catch errant shots. For the better players there are a number of good birdie opportunities on this course but danger also lurks so you will also need good course management. The golf course continues to be competitively priced and should be added to any resident or tourist golfers schedule.

HUB SPORTS BAR AND GOLF SOCIETY, VILLAMARTIN Captain´s Day at Las Colinas and what a turn out for Simon Williams “drive in”. It was a full house of members and guests to contest the two competitions, an individual and team Stableford. The day was sponsored by Richard Allen of the ´Pink Link´ transport company based in the U.K. Richard is a regular visitor to the Costa Blanca and of course a Hub Golf Society member. The two main competitions were supplemented by 4 nearest the pins and a 2´s, always popular, particularly this time as it carried a 110€ pot. Phil de Lacy claimed his ´2´ on the 175 yard 5th par 3 with a decent 5 wood, plus an excellent 25 foot putt, with appropriate celebrations to follow. Unfortunately four other players emulated the feat, on the 5th once again, the 10th and two more on the 14th one of which went to a delighted Williams. As expected the team event, best 3 scores of 4, was very close. Three teams were separated by just one point for second spot, the winners Bob Rankin, Sharon Pearson, Nick Spicer and Andrew Perrot being way out in front on 124 points to take the title. Eight players recorded a score of 30 points or more in the individual event but top of the pile was Warren Harris, playing off a 10 handicap managed an excellent 36 points. Richard Connelly won a dinner for two at the Square, Villamartin after guessing the Captain´s ´drive in´ distance which he requested not to be published. Results - Team. 1st Bob Rankin, Sharon Pearson, Nick Spicer, Andrew
Perrot 124 points, 2nd John Eyre, Paul Durrant, Roger Duncan, Jay Jameson 115 points Individuals: 1st Warren Harris 36 pts, 2nd Andrew Perrot 35 pts, 3rd Mike Davies 34 pts, 4th Simon Lee (c/b) 32 pts 2´s Cam McHardy, Simon Williams, Phil de Lacy, Tom Robertson, Jay Jameson Picture shows from L/R Richard Allen, Andrew Perrot, Simon Williams.

AT LA FINCA 10TH JUNE 2015 This week we were back to one of our regular venues La Finca, it must be said that the new Green Keeper is still trying to impress his bosses’ the course is in fantastic condition and this probably contributed to the high scores from our Gold Category, even if the tees were well

back, unfortunately the same couldn’t be said for the Silver Category, there was such a difference in their scores that someone asked if they had played the same course! And surprisingly no one managed to get a “2” so the €23 in the pot will be rolled over to next week’s visit to El Plantio. In the Nearest to the pin competition, one of our Norwegian lady members managed to collect both bottles of wine for being closest on holes 3 and 13. As her twin sister is also a member, it’s sometimes difficult to know for sure which one of them actually won! In this case we were certain that it was Turid or was it Tove? Anyway I’m sure that they would share the bottles as the other twin won last week, Alex Goslan was closest on hole 6 and Finnish member Raymond Maitikainen was closest on hole16. As stated the Silver category scores were well behind that of the big boys in the Gold category. So in 3rd place was Robbie Rae with 30 points only to be beaten by his Austrian partner Olga Haubner on lower handicap and in first place, yes it was that twin again Turid Finne with 34 points. In the Gold category it needed 37 points from Captain, John Eyre to take 3rd place, 2 points ahead of him in 2nd place came Chris Oatley, but way out in front with a massive 43 points (including a blob!) came Norwegian member Dag Lovas and of course for his efforts will also receive the bonus prize of a very nice cut to his handicap. Photo is of the Gold category winners. Our next game is at the much improved El Plantio on the 17th June, so if you fancy trying it out with a friendly group of Europeans give the Secretary a call on 661 524 101 or visit www.tmgs.org you can now also follow us on Facebook/tmgsgolf and Twitter@tmgsgolf

TORRY CONFIRM PRE SEASON GAME WITH CHAMPIONSHIP SIDE HULL CITY By Steve Hibberd At last week’s CD Torrevieja AGM, president Vicente Boix confirmed that Torry would be playing Hull City at Vicente Garcia Stadium on either 26 or 28 Jul. He also stated that friendlies are being arranged against Cartagena, Real Murcia, Hercules, and possibly Elche. The playing squad will be commencing training on 6 Jul, when hopefully some new additions will be in evidence. The top table, consisting of Vicente Boix, Jeff & Di Scott, Grahame Knight and Matilde Serapio, advised the socios in attendance, of any relevant information pertaining to the club. An encouraging point to come from the financial side, is that only 1,500 euros of debt are outstanding, which is a huge improvement on last years figures. A council grant of 70,000 euros has aalso been awarded, but will depend on which party are governing the Torrevieja council, as to whether this amount is actually received. Shirt sponsorship is required for the forthcoming season, and any interested parties are invited to contact club treasurer Jeff Scott. Wi fi has now been installed within the ground, which now boasts a
superb pitch, having been twice reseeded last season. Torry have a regular spot on TV Torrevieja, as well as reports on Exite,TKO and Sunshine radio. Meetings with the mayor have continued throughout the season, resulting in the good relationship which now exists. CD Torrevieja end of season dinner was a tremendous success, enjoyed by all in attendance. Vicente and his board of directors, are confident that in Pedreno, they have the right manager to take Torry into a play off slot in the coming season.

Fifteen teams of four assembled on the tees at La Marquesa, ready for the 08.02 shot gun start to play this week’s game, a Texas Scramble. The early morning started off overcast and as the morning wore on the rain came down. However, most of the field carried on regardless! After the game, players gathered at the Clubhouse for the prize giving. Scores were very close, with the winning team of Bill Martin, Angelika Berndt, Bev Evans and ghost coming in with 65. Second on count back were Tony Stanley, Ian Stewart, Hadge Armstrong and Dave Newton with 65.5 just edging out in third place David Gregson, Dennis Cole, Jean Jackson and Anne Rogers also with 65.5. QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY Last Wednesday the Society traveled to Horadada to play Lo Romero, a popular course with our members, but one which we hadn´t played for a year or so. The course was in good condition although the greens on the back nine hadn´t quite fully recovered from recent hollow-tining and some of the tees likewise after remedial work. The weather was again perfect for golf with bright sunshine and a light breeze. 28 players contested 2 divisions in an individual stableford competition. The winner of the Gold division on the day with 32 points on C/B was Welshman Mike Thomas who has now started to use a driver and it is starting to pay dividends. He did also admit to warming up for this event at a stag weekend at the prestigious Celtic Manor golf complex in his native Wales. In second place was West countryman Ron Perkins with 32 points who took home another bottle of Soberano. In third place was the steady “Iron” Brian Smith with 31 points. In the Silver Division the winner was Scotsman Charlie Wallace with 34 points. He had a knee replacement earlier in the year and it now appears to be helping his balance and swing. Digressing , there were quite a few members out there with knee supports and a few others hobbling along. Perhaps we should re-name the society the “Knackered Kness Golf Society”. In 2nd place with 31 points on C/B was veteran golfer young Trevor Hobbs. In third place again with 31 points was Welsh girl Glenys Thomas who didn´t warm up at Celtic
Manor in advance of this game. Good job she didn´t. The best guest was Greg, sorry Fred Norman with a very creditable 30 points. The nearest the Pin winners were, John Dunnion, Mike Thomas, Janet Candelin, Charlie Wallace and Sheila McSweeney. Again we had winners from the length and breadth of the British Isles and a mixture from both sexes. Janet Candelin got a 2 today and took away 50€ from the 2´s pot which still has a sizeable amount to carry forward to the next game. Recently joined member Mark Goode was the winner of the scratchcard. In the preliminary round of the annual knock-out competition Roy Kavanagh beat Darry Wright. Roy was 3 down with 5 to play but hung on in there and won the last 5 holes after Darryll suffered a melt-down. Well done Roy. After the game the members returned to the society base, the Quesada Country Club for a bit of banter and the prize giving over a drink or two and a tasty buffet kindly laid on. The next game is a Texas Scamble at Font De Llop on Wednesday 24 June. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the Membership Secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.

BUSTERS JUNE GOLF REPORT By Barry Grinsell We had a shorter journey to the course this month for our June singles stable ford game , the outing had twenty six members who competed to play in our competition at the par seventy three Vistabella golf course near Los Montesinos , this challenging course is eleven holes so seven holes are played twice , however from different tee boxes , the course was made a little more tricky on this day with several of the pin positions being tucked away behind bunkers , making the shots into the green a lot more difficult for most of us , we only had one player who made even par but several of our players did score over thirty and with those pin positions that wasn’t easy , the course has two par threes so one of those is played twice , this being the hundred and sixty metre 4/15 hole giving the course just three par threes in total , hopefully in the near future the owners of the course will be going to be make it into eighteen holes which should then have four different par threes ( lets hope they can make them shorter than the existing two which are both over one hundred and sixty metres long ) , but at the end of the day the course was as usual in superb condition , and enjoyed by all . As customary for our presentation today we returned to the Mini Golf bar close to Quesada’s arches where we were welcomed by the bars friendly staff , and treated to some excellent sausage chips with bread and butter , swilled down by most of our players with a couple of pints , onto our presentation , today’s prizes were won by , on the par threes N T P s the fourth hole won by Alan Gifford , the eighth by Lee Barber and Phil Pettican won the fifteenth , they all had a sleeve of three Srixon golf balls , our best front nine was won by Nikki Ead on count back with seventeen points , Lee Barber took the back nine with nineteen points , both player’s received cash prizes , in third place today with thirty four points , winning on count back again with thirty three points was Bill Peters , in second place the runner up was Phil Pettican with thirty four points , and our winner for the day with thirty six points was Alan Gifford , all received cash prizes , well done to all who managed to score over thirty points today . Finally the soccer card today was deservedly won by Brian Jones having selected ‘ Burnley ‘ , Brian is always there to help out so can I say many thanks to him for having the results of the score cards again checked and in order for me when I returned to the bar and not forgetting that he also sells our soccer card prior to the games commencing Next month we look forward to playing at Campo de Golf Alicante .
