RISKING THEIR LIVES FOR A DAY ON THE BEACH

Let us now hope that after all the pomp and ceremony which took place in Orihuela last week, with the swearing in of new Partido Popular mayor Emilio Bascu単ana,

despite barely a mention of the coast in his speech of acceptance, the new leader, will focus at least some of his attention on the Orihuela Costa, which in recent years has been so sadly neglected by a whole string of previous administrations. Continued on Page 2

Still employed as the director of Orihuela’s Department of Health and the Vega Baja hospital, a post that he is expected to relinquish, 56 year old Bascuñana, is also the former chairman of the Provincial Red Cross and listening to some of his early speeches, he seems to be a man of principle. He said that during the next four years he will work with honesty and integrity to improve the situation of all of the residents of Orihuela, so in order to get you off to the easiest possible start, here are just a few areas that you could perhaps consider, all of which would go a long way to endearing you with coastal voters and improving the perception in which Orihuela politicians are held by the general public on the coast. We really aren’t all that interested in the ‘bigger picture’, the General Urban Plan, the millions of euro’s spent on the city’s cultural heritage, or new roads and tunnels built to accommodate the arrival of the high speed train (AVE) network into Orihuela ten years down the line. We simply want a town where the streets are regularly swept, where the rubbish and green waste is collected and the bin areas are kept clean, where residents don’t have to walk on the roads because the sinking and broken pavements are too dangerous, where our beaches are manned by lifeguards throughout the whole of the summer so that the safety of the thousands of visitors who descend on the area, visitors on who our businesses so greatly rely, are not completely abandoned during the early and late summer months. We also want a town where attention is paid to the upkeep of green areas, where we can relax in local parks, where Palm trees are regularly pruned and maintained, where the police actually do their job, rather than continually hassling the small bars and restaurants who are simply trying to make a living. Perhaps a little more attention to illegally parked cars and to unlawful traders might keep them better occupied. Many rural roads are also in dire need of repair, one example being the Carretera de Villamartin from the AP7 bridge by La Zenia Boulevard, through to Los Dolses, its continuation through Villamartin to Calle R Wagner and beyond. Albeit rural, this series of minor roads is the main thoroughfare between San Miguel de la Salinas and La Zenia, carrying thousands of vehicles every day, many of which can regularly be seen veering from side to side in order to avoid the many potholes and tree stumps. And in terms of a serious accident waiting to happen, there is nothing more dangerous than the walk along Calle Cabo Creus from La Regia toward Lomas de Cabo Roig and the Fuente Commercial Centre, shown in the front page image. Quite how there aren’t more serious injuries and deaths amongst the many pedestrians that regularly use the road, both adults and children, en route to and from the beach, and the Cabo Roig bars and restaurants,

The main route between San Miguel de Salinas and La Zenia carries thousands of vehicle every day, many of which can often seen drifting to avoid the pot holes and trees

particularly at night, I am absolutely amazed. Ignored by the outgoing administration, this stretch of roadway is critically in need of a pedestrian footpath and lighting. It was interesting to note ‘like articles’ written in La Verdad and Informacion, two of the more popular Regional Newspapers, last week, where local journalists were demanding similar actions to many of those listed above, but all on behalf of Orihuela City residents. With so little support from the Spanish media it’s perhaps not so surprising, therefore, that the Costa is so regularly ignored. Perhaps they too ought to remember that it is only from the sale of coastal lands, the payment of coastal taxes, the purchase of coastal properties, that their city and it’s infrastructure has been allowed to flourish in recent years, that local pedenias have seen similar investment; lets not forget La Apericida, where, with a population of less than 3,000 inhabitants, a new civic centre was recently built at a cost of €1.2 million in what was widely thought to be nothing more than an exercise in buying votes. And just last September “€320,000 was invested in improving eight parks and gardens in Orihuela city and its surrounds”. The move got a great deal of publicity and was well received by the local population. Another vote winner in the build up to the Municipal elections. The Orihuela Costa, meanwhile, doesn't have a single park worthy of the name. We have absolutely nothing, scandalous to say the very least. One of the most densely populated parts of Orihuela Costa, La Florida, not only doesn’t have a park, but the waste land which is designated as such is not even maintained. So the new investment for parks and gardens in the city and surrounding villages simply adds insult to injury on the Costa. What you must remember is that the Orihuela Costa has the same population as Orihuela city but it has no power to look after itself so now, with the onset

of the summer months, the busiest trading season of the year, it is even more important that the area is no longer allowed to continue its gradual degeneration into an urban slum because of neglect by Orihuela City based bureaucrats. With a regular population of 30,000 people, that grows to over 300,000 during the summer months, positive action needs to be taken by the Orihuela town hall now, so that the area can once again

look like a decent place in which to live, visit and to invest. If you want the coast to continue as a successful source of income, to grow and to thrive like we all know that it can, the remedies and the necessary investment needs to be put in place now. It must be taken care of or it will die and what will happen to your beloved Orihuela city then Mr Mayor. I doubt that it will be all that far behind!

RISKING THEIR LIVES: For many pedestrians this is their only route to the beach and to the Cabo Roig Strip’

LET’S GET THINGS GOING ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA If you find a problem that you would like the Orihuela Costa authorities to deal with you must first of all make sure that they know about it. You can do this by taking a photo of the offending item or issue and sending it, with a short explanation, to the email address: residentes@orihuela.es. We will shortly have a new council in place so let’s make sure that they are fully aware of any problems that need addressing, then they have no excuse!

IBERDROLA FURY AS RESIDENTS IGNORED FOLLOWING ELECTRICAL EXPLOSION AND FIRE

Four properties were plunged into darkness last week as a power distribution box located in Barbero De Sevilla, Sol Golf Fase 2 in Villamartin, suddenly exploded and erupted into flames. Such was the force of the explosion that the locked cabinet in which the power units were located was ripped open and the metal doors blown into the adjacent street. The fire, which occurred last Tuesday, was attended by Bomberas from Torrevieja and Policia Local from Playa Flamenca and since that time the four properties concerned have been without power, and pretty much uninhabitable. One of the residents, Robert Kirkhope, told the Leader that both Iberdrola and insurers Mapfre, have washed their hands of the matter and are refusing to help or to become involved. Electricity provider Iberdrola says that the matter is not of their concern, despite the fact that they provide the four properties with their power, so it would now seem that the occupants have little choice other than to employ and to pay a local electrician if they are to restore the electrical supply to their properties anytime soon. Mr Kirkhope said that he was pleased that nobody was hurt but the real concern amongst the residents now is that there are many other similar distribution

boxes in the urbanisation, all of a similar age and condition, that the reasons for the explosion and fire are not known and that Iberdrola are refusing to carry out any form of investigation into the matter. He said that the doors to the electrical box were ripped off and thrown into the street so forcefully that they would have caused serious injury to anyone who was passing by and there is a distinct concern amongst the residents that this could quite easily happen again. And with the onset of the summer and the ever increasing demand for electricity it is unlikely that this will not be the only occasion reporting such an incident. This is just one more occasion in a long line of incidents reported to this newspaper where, once again, Iberdrola are failing to meet the standards expected of such a multi-national company. It is hardly surprising that their customers continue to look to alternative suppliers elsewhere.

REFORESTATION Redován, Callosa de Segura and Benejúzar councils announced that they will begin a programme of reforestation in the area surrounding the Sierra de Orihuela, but that it will not get underway until October, once the main period of fire risk has passed in the pine forests that are conjointly owned by the three municipalities. Deputy Environment councillor, Javier Sendra, said the councils are "very aware of the problems facing the forested areas of the province that have been hardest hit by drought and pest. The allocated budget for the replanting is thought to be 100,000 euro.

WHALE SIGHTINGS The crew of a Spanish yacht alerted Dénia Coast Guard of the presence of two fin whales that they saw swimming south of the area of Les Rotes. They claimed to have been sailing for about an hour alongside the whales in the Marine Nature Reserve of Cap de Sant Antoni just a few hundred meteres off the denia coast. Fin whales, the world's second largest whale, reaching up to 24 mtrs in length, are regularly seen 15-20 km off the coastline. It is unusual to see them so close the shore.

MURCIA COURT ORDERS CLOSURE OF LANDFILL Murcia’s Supreme Court has finally dismissed Proambiente’s appeal and suspended all activities at their waste sites in Abanilla, Murcia and La Murada to the north of Orihuela. The ruling means that the Murcia company now has three months to close down the sites, currently occupying 37 hectares of a protected mountain range in the Sierra de Abanilla, for a period of at least 30 years. The decision now finally brings to a close a long running court battle, initially lodged by disgraced businessman Angel Fenoll, back in 2011.

Initial complaints were made by residents of the two villages as well as by the local environmental group ‘Ecologists in Action’ who stated that permission had not been given for use of the 37 hectare site by Proambiente. However little progress appeared to be made, until that is, Snr Fenoll was implicated in the Brugal corruption case It was then confirmed that no authorisation had been given for the use of the land and the whole series of court cases was put into effect. With last week’s ruling by the Murcia Supreme court Proambiente are now required to restore the landfill site

to its original condition. However, despite the court decision the company is still functioning on the site with a number of other activities related to waste management where it continues to conduct processing work for a number of Murcia municipalities including the production of biogas, a mixture of different gases produced by the continued breakdown of organic matter found amongst the waste

Over the next 30 years the site must be restored to its original state

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Lavender, Lemonade and Biscuits One of our neighbours, Noelia, called to see us a few days ago, and I was a little taken aback when she pounced upon the lavender growing vigorously in our garden. Noelia excitedly pointed at the plants and told me that she had tried growing lavender on many occasions, but without success and couldn't understand why our plants were full of bloom and giving off a heady perfume, when after all, she only lived a few doors away. I am no gardening expert, so didn't really have a ready answer, but promised to try to grow some cuttings for her. It was a promise that I then immediately regretted, since I have never grown cuttings from lavender before. Gardening and plants have always given me a lot of pleasure, and I have been working quite hard recently to improve our small garden. It has taken a few years to get around to developing it as I would like, mainly because I have been waiting to complete a long awaited extension, which would also mean digging up well established existing trees and shrubs, and a job that I have to admit to putting off. However, the main work has now been done and I can concentrate on developing a garden that is easy to maintain, but also to reflect my love of a few special plants to remind me of our home in the UK, as well as Canarian plants that I know will grow well in the hot, often arid conditions of the south of Gran Canaria where I live. One of the plants that I knew would grow easily in the Canary Islands and Spain is lavender. From my experience in the UK, I knew that

once it is established it is Spanish Lavender growing wild relatively trouble free, along the Camino de Santiago its heady scent wards of some of the nasty insects and it would flower with ease until it grew too 'woody' and would have to be dug up. It was during my research into how to successfully grow cuttings for Noelia, that I discovered that lavender is part of the mint family, and is actually native to the Canary Islands, as well as the South of France, so I am surprised that I do not see more plants growing in gardens and on patios. Its beautiful purple blooms, silver foliage and heady perfume make it an ideal garden plant. Bees love it too, and although some regard it as a short-lived plant, I have had the same plants flowering freely for many years, albeit with the occasional dramatic prune when it starts to look too 'woody'. I also grow lavender in pots on our patio, as well as planted in the garden, and began to wonder why our plants have been so successful, whereas Noelia’s plants died. I suspect it is due to poor drainage, since these plants do best, and produce more scented oil, in dry soil. I use a simple watering system beneath the soil that operates for only two minutes, twice a day, and so the plants never have too much water, and both garden and pot plants are planted in gritty soil to provide good drainage. Noelia also told me that one of the reasons why she wanted to grow lavender was to collect the flower sprigs and to dry them for use in her home. In addition, Noelia wanted to add lavender to freshly made

lemonade to add flavour, as well as adding it to home made biscuits. I am not at all sure about this, because as much as I like the plant, and appreciate its perfume for warding of mosquitoes and other nasty insects, I don't think I would appreciate too much of the perfume indoors, nor am I too keen on Noelia’s idea of drinking or eating the plant. If anyone does try this, do please let me know the outcome, but do only use lavender that has not been treated with garden chemicals. BIKE LANE CONFUSION AS ELDERLY SUFFER IN CABO ROIG Despite the plaudits, most of which were generated themselves, through press releases from the Orihuela Council, the introduction of a new cycle lane down Calle Fuego, opposite the Cabo Roig Medical centre, running alongside the Marinasol Bar and Restaurant is an absolute nonsense and yet another example of the lack of thought put into urban planning on the Orihuela Costa. With parking for the aged and infirm in close proximity to the medical centre already in short supply, the former councillor for Mobility and Transport, Manuel Gallud, has now taken away a further 20 free spaces, forcing many of the sick and elderly who regularly attend the centre a much longer walk. The removal of the spaces comes at the start of the summer and, with the installation of a fairground in the car park directly adjoining the centre, follows the loss of another 20 or so spaces in the area. Having spoken to local residents and bar owners I understand that the new cycle lane is rarely used despite the orchestration of a couple of cyclists in the images used with the press release. Or am I getting confused, as judging by the signs that are still in evidence 2 weeks after the opening of the lane, we can still park in it after all? I suppose it will only be clarified after some poor soul tries to contest the 200 euro fine he got for taking the chance!

Park or Not to Park! Would you take the chance?

COSTA FINALLY GET THEIR LIFEGUARDS Well at long last we seem to have lifeguards on the Orihuela Costa Beaches. They started work on Monday last, 15th June, far too late for some, unfortunately, but at least they will now be with us during the main holiday season, through until the 25th September. They will be allocated according to the size and demand of each beach of course but on Campoamor, where I met up with Carlos Berra (left) and his team, there will be between 4 and 6, starting at 10am and working through until 8pm on all seven days of the week. Each lifeguard will have the usual safety equipment as well as a 2 way radio in the event of needing help. There will also be a number of jet ski’s operating along the coast with the one in the photo above dedicated to the beaches at Cabo Roig, Campoamor and Mil Palmeras.

ALICANTE POLITICIAN CALLS FOR REFERENDUM TO BAN BULLFIGHTING Marisol Moreno, the new councillor for Animal Protection in Alicante, says that she supports a national ban of bullfighting in Spain, and calls for a referendum to ban the activity throughout the municipality. She says that ban is supported by a large number of government councillors, members of the Guanyar Alicante, which is made up by EU, Podemos and politicians from plataformas Ciudadanas. She also states that there is some support from members of the PSOE and Compromís parties and that a council vote would see the municipal government position itself clearly behind the veto. Indeed the new Councillor for Youth and Animal Protection, was out protesting within hours of being sworn in, taking time to attend the protest at the Plaza de Toros in support of the Alliance Platform ‘Animals Feel’. The organization is also calling for the closure of the Bullfighting School in Alicante which teaches the ‘sport’ to children aged between 9 and 16. Moreno said that she believes many of the children are simply "victims" of bullfighting and pressured into attending the school by their parents. And the protests are just beginning with the next demonstration scheduled for 20 June the first day of the San Juan bonfires in the city. The rally will be held in

the Plaza de la Estrella under the title of ‘Bloodless Fires’. Discussion surrounding bullfighting bans are not only being held in Alicante. The new Los Verdes government team in Villena has already said that they will no longer allow bullfights to take place in the town. In Alicante a further motion was passed to ban circuses in the city that use live animals in their shows. Last year, Spain's parliament bestowed cultural-heritage status on bullfighting, making it much harder for further bans beyond that of Catalonia in 2010, and the Canaries in the early 1990s, to take effect. Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, the former Socialist Party prime minister, has said that he is not in favour of prohibition, too, while the currently ruling Partido Popular party has rejected the notion completely. Bullfighting is also enjoyed in some southern parts of France which added La Corrida, as it is known, to its list of “intangible heritage” back in 2011, but subsequently removed any mention of it from their website after outrage from animal rights activists It seems hard to believe that in this socalled civilised age, such a cruel spectacle continues to flourish in Spain. Bullfighting is yet another example of a barbaric ‘sport’ and many people feel that it should have been banned several years ago.

ished but otherwise healthy. He will now be cared for at the rescue centre. “We’re delighted to see the police now acting on public complaints, which even just two years ago wouldn’t have happened,” Sue said. “We are so encouraged by the changes that we’re seeing, there’s a huge movement forward in Spain for animal welfare and these rescues do have a knock on effect because people start to realise that they can’t get away with animal abuse.”

SUMMER MEALS One of the first measures of the new government team in Alicante will be to "ensure" that school dining halls open during July, August and September. City spokesman, Natxo Bellido, said that he will request a report from the departments of Education and Social Action to confirm that allocation and access to school meals for children in need is guaranteed.

NO DRACONIAN MEASURES FOR THE COSTA BLANCA Following the introduction of new rules to clean up the drunken image of Spanish party town Magaluf, a number of establishments in the Valencian Community are suggesting that many of the measures they have brought in are too draconian and not necessary on the Costa Blanca. Hosbec, the association which represents over 200 hoteliers in the region, has said that it has negotiated the inclusion of a clause with the Ministry of Tourism, which allows Costa Blanca’s establishments to impose their own internal rules against disruptive clients, as and when they are necessary, particularly in areas that are private, such as function rooms, swimming pools, gymnasiums or other such locales, enabling them to regulate their own quality standards. Hosbec President Antoni Mayor says that Benidorm registers 11 million overnight stays per year and while there are some "extreme cases" that require some “extreme measures” they can be dealt with "in different ways”. It is not necessary to impose blanket bans on such matters as the consumption of alcohol outdoors. In the event of unruly behavior brought about by drunkenness such individuals can usually be dealt with on a local basis. Unfortunately ‘brand Magaluf’ is being destroyed as a tourist destination by the images of drunken teenagers appearing in the media. Fortunately this is not the case in this part of Spain, so as long as hoteliers are sensible with their treatment of the holidaying public, the Costa Blanca will continue to be the number one holiday destination for many millions of Europeans. TRBL AWARD FOR the OLYMPIA RESTAURANT The Orihuela Costa of the Royal British Legion held their June meeting at the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras last Thursday evening following which a Certificate of Appreciation was presented to restaurant owner Elaina for the help and support she has provided to the organisation since its formation at the beginning of 2008. The photograph shows Elaina receiving the award from Vice President Eddie Coleman. The branch also held a spontaneous collection, initiated during AOB by member Ted Marsh, for the Gurkha Welfare Trust Earthquake Response Fund, created to provide emergency aid to the Gurkha and ex Ghurkha community affected by the earthquake last May. A total of €255 was collected which has already been despatched to TRLB to be added to the initial £50,000 grant awarded by the charity last month. Guest speaker for the evening was local broadcaster and journalist Keith Nicol who presented a short

‘What’s on, in and around the local area’ followed by an overview of cruising (by boat) in and around the Costa Blanca, which was remarkably well received. Keith promised to return to the branch later in the year when he will treat the members to some previously unseen video footage of a dive onto the wreck of the Titanic.

RIGHT OF REPLY Dear Editor, Now that the local elections are completed and ‘the dust is starting to settle,’ I think it appropriate to now respond to Mr. Paul Piccio Hernandez’s letter to the editor, dated May 14. What surprised me mostly about Paul’s letter was the personal nature of the attack. I know Paul and whenever I have met him face to face, he has been charming and friendly. But local politics can be a dirty business and all too often some will resort to gutter fighting to try and enhance their position by being negative about others. The bottom line is that Ciudadanos, a new party to the Orihuela area, has only been campaigning for a matter of weeks and have secured three council places. CLARO, who have been campaigning for the last four years, got nothing. At present Spain has embarked on a journey of political renewal. As a founder member of CLARO, might I suggest that your party does the same. There have been too many strategic mistakes by its leadership during the last eight years plus. You have many loyal and hardworking supporters and they deserve better. When CLARO did get a seat on the council in the previous election, it was only because of what proved to be their shaky alliance with the CLR party. But the fact remains that you have, as a party, failed in your attempt to secure the votes of a substantial part of the 31,028 non-Spanish who are on the Orihuela padron. Personal attacks, 20/20 hindsight and excuses will do you no good. Regards Stefan Pokroppa

MR MAYOR? BUT WHICH ONE Dear Editor, This week's front page news is extremely important but it was surprisingly short of hard relevant facts. Nine times the article addressed "Mr. Mayor" but did not use the mayor's actual name. From the information given, it is addressing the outgoing green mayor Monserrate Guillen and not the new PP mayor Emilio Bascunana. For this reason it is vital to know the date the incident took place? The article says that it "Just" happened and later on it mentioned Friday but no date. Certainly, it was the green party mayor who had total control over our beaches up to Saturday along with Martina Scheurer. Together they have mismanaged and wasted our precious resources and exercised very little control over the very poor lifeguard service that they themselves awarded over the last 2 years. Readers of this article might wrongly blame the current PP mayor who was only elected mayor on Saturday lunchtime for this catastrophic ongoing situa-

tion on our coast whereas this near/drowning event took place before he was elected mayor, maybe the writer of the article, Clive Irwin would like to blame the new mayor for all the problems he has inherited from the redundant left wing government as well. Newspapers should be more fact based and not leave the reader confused. Some additional information that readers might like to know could be; where is Playa Bosque? Is it in La Zenia? What were the weather conditions like at the time? What time of day it was? When does the new lifeguard contract begin? Will the lifeguards be supervised this year? Did the unfortunate swimmer survive or die? What was this man's name, age or nationality? Safety on our beaches is just too important to be written about in this way. Raymond Kearney President of the CLR Supporters Group, Orihuela Costa EDITOR: The incident ocurred on Friday 5th June and the following weekend so Guillen was the incumbent at that time. However, as I write, despite copying the article to the new mayor and the Orihuela Costa Town Hall, the beach is still without a lifebelt.

SAMARITANS IN SPAIN WANT TO SUPPORT DESPERATE YOUNGSTERS. A recent BBC news item reported that filmmaker Andrew Jenkins, 52, from Blaenau Gwent, says he has lost 19 friends to suicide over three decades and has spoken out so that other people might think twice about killing themselves. He now plans to make an educational film about the issue. The piece also quoted Stephen Habgood, chairman of charity Papyrus which is concerned with young people's suicides, who said 75% of people who took their own lives were young men and he expected to see an increase in suicides among middle aged men in the latest Office for National Statistics figures. "It's all caught up with men unwilling to admit they can't cope and are struggling. The recession raises concerns at the pressures it places on men, when their jobs or relationships are at risk as a consequence"

Psychiatrists say mental health problems are increasing in Spain too and the suicide rate is up since the financial crisis began. Certain factors are known to be associated with increased risk of suicide including unemployment (nearly half of those under 30, almost 2 million people, cannot find a job) poverty, family breakdown, bullying and social isolation. The young fear that that they have no future in their own country and either have to move abroad or depend on family members who are themselves in difficulty. According to RTVE ( official broadcaster on Spanish TV) suicide was second to cancer ( 15% of deaths) in the overall 25-34 age group and the leading cause of death in young men (17.8% ). One in three young people who take their lives are intoxicated at the time of death. Among the young , 80% of suicides are male, who feel possibly that they should be the stronger sex and men usually find it much more difficult to open up and talk about their problems. NEW TERM PLANS FOR TORREVIEJA In the wake of the new appointment of José Manuel Dolón of the Los Verdes as the mayor of Torrevieja, ousting the Partido Popular after 27 years, the new government has started to lay out its plans for the future, detailing some of the priorities that they intend to focus on during this first term of a “new Torrevieja”. Primarily, the new government wants to create an era of openness and cleanliness, reaching out to the citizens of the municipality, making the city a vibrant and new destination, with concerns for the environmental impact, and bridging the gaps between the city and the surrounding areas. Some of the changes to the General Plan will be reversed, such as plans to allow the destruction of protected land for the construction of a new DIY store, and the creation of a rubbish tip, also on protected land. Recently, Torrevieja has seen more than 100 changes to the General Plan altering plots of land and their designated use, more than any other municipality in Spain. Concluding the problems with street cleaning and waste disposal is also a priority, partly to finally terminate the illegal contracts that had been allowed to run, and partly to take on board the recommendations of the municipal technicians who had also been ignored in the past. There have been many problems in the past with the relationship between the police and the town hall. Sometimes these have been seemingly petty problems like a street where a councillor lives having the parking restrictions altered, immediately after receiving a parking ticket, to major problems with shifts and shift patterns, which has left the municipality under covered at times, and officers in a vulnerable position. The police have for a long time been trying to open dialogue with the town hall, but had not managed to make any progress. The fact that José Manuel Dolón received a standing ovation in his first presentation to the police this week is indicative perhaps that they can finally see a better future. There has been speculation that the Foreigner´s Office is to close; this has been denied vehemently by the town hall. They say that the office is an integral part of the town hall and they couldn´t close it if they wanted to. But, it is their intention to make it better, providing more staff and better help and communication, especially to foreigners, as they have been neglected in the past. The new government do however accept that there will be no miracle cure for Torrevieja that will solve the problems overnight. Each councillor is now looking at their own departments and seeing what changes can

R E S I D E NTS O F F I C E D E N I E S C LO S U R E

The new head of the PSOE in Torrevieja, Fanny Serrano, gave her first interview to the British press this week, denying the rumours that the International Residents Office is to close. One of the most speculated issues has been the threatened closure of the International Residents Office. This has been vehemently denied. Serrano said, “absolutely not. I couldn´t believe that you asked that question. I think the problem is that the PP think everything is their own. ‘It´s my office, it´s my town hall’, no, it´s not yours, it´s for the citizens. The foreigners office is from the town hall, it´s for all citizens, so you can´t just close it in that way. I can´t understand why somebody would say something like this. It´s incredible!” The plans submitted by the PSOE before the elections to increase the staffing in this office were raised “yes, of course” was the immediate response. When asked about improvements, “we have to study everything”, Serrano replied, “there are other departments which are over represented, so we need several weeks to study each department and make decisions”. As for bridging the gaps between the city and urbanisations, especially that many of the residents in urbanisations feel neglected with a lack of police patrols, street lights failing, and many other problems, the question of how the government will solve that problem was responded by the comment,

Fanny Serrano says there is absolutely no way that the office will close

“we want to stop this separation between Torrevieja central and the surrounding urbanisations. It makes no sense, it is all Torrevieja”. The PSOE planned to have a rolling plan for councillors to visit urbanisations, which “we plan to continue”. But, “we want the neighbours from the urbanisations to come to the town hall, to speak to us, just talk to us, write and tell us what´s happened, because now everything is open, we are not as closed as we used to be”. “Torrevieja is going to be the best city”, a “new Torrevieja, a lively city, but overall, for us, foreigners are very important. We have more than half of the population which is foreign, The PP forgot the foreigners, they only look for you when they need you, every four years, just to vote. We don´t want that, we want an interaction between the foreigners, the Spanish, the government and so on, we want another kind of town”.

One of the first acts by the new mayor was a reduction in his own salary.

be made. They also accept that some departments are grossly overrepresented, and others are falling short, and so they aim collectively to ensure the balance is corrected. It is a new era for the management of the municipality, once which they promise will be free of corruption. In fact, the government has already started to identify lots of issues which were jus “swept under the carpet” by the PP, which they will no deal with. They have vowed to denounce through the courts ever case of corruption that they find. They also aim to be a more personally accountable government. For example, the mobile phone scandal that rocked the previous government could not happen again, as all of the councillors have opted to use their own personal mobile phones, which they will personally pay for, thus ending another extortionate drain on public money. For his part, the mayor has also announced a cut in his salary, as he is retired and has a pension, and so he does not need to drain the public purse any further for his own benefit, that money also being able to be put back into public services.

TRAFFIC POLICE TO GET MOBILE VEHICLE INSPECTION UNITS Traffic police in Spain will soon receive more equipment to help in their enforcement of the law, after two separate contracts were published in the state bulletin for acquisitions. The first contract is valued at 363,000 euro and is for the supply of three mobile units which will be used to check for irregularities in both the vehicles and ITV certificates during routine checks. The mobile inspection units will be able to detect faults in such elements as brakes, tyres, suspension and other vehicle components, with enforced immobilisation an option in the event of faults being detected. The three mobile units will be given to the Guardia Civil and will carry two mechanics in each. It is estimated that 20% of all vehicles on the roads have irregularities with their ITV certificates and inspections and these units will support other technology such as automatic number plate recognition which checks the database for ITV expiration and alerts the central computer of its findings, so that sanctions can be issued. In addition, the DGT has purchased an additional 18 radar cameras, at a cost of 900,000 euro, which will be used for monitoring the road network for speeding vehicles. All of this is in addition to the recent purchase of camouflaged cars with new radar equipment installed, and the continual focus on reducing the problem of speeding on the roads.

HEAT WAVE WARNING SYSTEM IMPLEMENTED he Ministry of Health has launched a meteorological monitoring system for the summer to help prevent and treat health problems as a result of extreme temperatures. The campaign, named “Ola de Calor 2015”, will operate throughout the country with every health department following the same protocols that have been in place since 2004, in order to “prevent, minimize and assess the impacts on the health of the population arising from high temperatures in the community, with particular attention to the possible occurrence of heat waves. “ Across Valencia, there are now 30 identifiable zones where temperature thresholds have been defined, with daily maps indicating the risk factor through the usual series of warning colours, green, yellow, orange and red. Each temperature level is accompanied by a series of protocols and a series of actions required in order to maintain safety in the sun. The heat map, along with other health related information, will be available on the health department´s website, http://cuidatecv.es/en in the Valencia community, as well as on http://www.ceam.es/ceamet/, where the UV index is also available. Meanwhile, the spring season, which is from March to May, has been “very warm” and “very wet” across the Valencia region, with an average temperature of 14.9 degrees and an average of 178.7 litres per square metre of rainfall. The data was presented this week in the climatology press conference held seasonally by the Spanish meteorological office, who also state that in view of the recent data, the summer season, June to August, is 40% likely to be “above normal” temperatures, and in any case will be “hot”. The good news for many is that there is likely to be a continuation of the rainfall throughout the summer, which will hopefully ease the current threat of

The museum is said to have overpaid for its purchases of works of art by as much as 1,500 percent over the market value. It also awarded numerous large contracts without putting them out to public tender, as is required by law; paid hefty amounts to individuals whose relationship to the museum was unclear; and grossly inflated its own attendance figures. Details of the alleged mismanagement that took place under former director Consuelo Ciscar have emerged in a preliminary report analyzing the period between 2009 and 2013. The audit was commissioned by the Valencia regional government, which funds the IVAM. In her statement, Ciscar, said that the gallery underwent several audits by the external auditor Audit Iberica SA, during her tenure, every one of which received a clean bill of health. These audits were subsequently endorsed by the Ministry of Finance with the assertion that there were no relevant breaches. Ciscar says that as soon as she became aware of the content of the report she immediately requested a copy, with-

AIRBUS CRASH Airbus Defence and Space issued an Accident Information Transmission (AIT) confirming that a software issue within the electronic control units (ECUs) of the A400M transport's EuroProp International TP400D6 powerplants led to the loss of aircraft MSN23. The aircraft crashed soon after take-off on its maiden flight from the company's facility in Seville, on 9 May, killing four Airbus personnel and seriously injuring another two.

DEFENCE SALES DOWN drought. Currently, as of the daily data from the 18th of June, most local reservoirs are currently just over half full. In the Segura basin, they are currently at 59.6% of their capacity, with the Pedrera at Torremendo only holding 157 cubic hectometres of its 246 cubic hectometre capacity and Crevillente only holding 5 cubic hectometres of its 13 cubic hectometre capacity.

PRICES FOR VALENCIA GALLERY PURCHASES INFLATED BY UP TO 1500% he former director of the IVAM, Valencia’s premier contemporary art museum, Consuelo Ciscar, has come out in defence of her leadership of the museum, between 2004 and 2014, by responding to the interim report of the General Comptroller of the Generalitat , which has has identified numerous irregularities and administrative failures.

out success, so that she could see the accusations herself and respond more accurately to all the allegations made. Under Ciscar, the IVAM organized a number of controversial shows such as one featuring works by her own son, who goes by the artistic name Rablaci and in 2008, the gallery also purchased 63 photographs for €442,280 from Gao Ping, who was later arrested as the alleged head of a criminal ring that is thought to have laundered between €800 million and €1.2 billion over four years. Earlier in the year the Valencian Goverment hired an expert, Jaime Brihuega, who teaches art history at Madrid’s Complutense University. He was asked to estimate the market value of five randomly selected artworks. His findings ruled that the difference between what was paid and what should have been paid ranged by between 45 and 1,520 percent more. Just last year the deputy Valencia regional premier José Ciscar announced the departure of Ciscar praising her for attracting 1,163,419 visitors to the museum in 2013. The figures lifted IVAM into sixth place in The Economist’s annual list of most-visited world museums. But the real number was closer to 85,000 with the attendance inflated by over a million people. It appears that the figures were inflated by everyone who received free tickets, those attending gallery shows, including fashion and cookery shows, and all of those also attending exhibitions across the country that featured gallery works.

The gallery paid 32,400 euros for Della bestia triunphante’. It was valued by Brihuega at 2000 euro.

um claimed 1,147,637 visitors, when it was really 98,176. In 2011, the 1.1 million reported by Ciscar were actually 109,938. The IVAM’s new management team said in a statement that the irregularities highlighted in the report “represent yet another serious setback for the public purse, and most particularly for IVAM’s depleted budget.” Ciscar, who served for 10 years, stepped down in April of last year in what appeared to be a personal decision, but was really an undercover dismissal. Her husband, Rafael Blasco, a regional deputy for the ruling Popular Party (PP), was standing trial at the time on charges of siphoning off millions of euros from a fund meant for development aid in poor countries. He was ultimately convicted to eight years in prison.

Spain’s Defence sales fell to EUR4.8 billion in 2014 from EUR5.6 billion the previous year, according to the national industry association for defence, aeronautics, and space technology companies (TEDAE). However, these were partly offset by rises in the other subsectors, leaving total income for the industry 5% down on 2013 at EUR9.4 billion. Exports continued to dominate, representing 82% of overall sales, up from a 79% share in 2013. The industry as a whole accounted for 5.5% of the country's industrial GDP.

CRUISING The port of Valencia currently ranks seventh in the number of cruise passengers visiting Spanish ports, with a total of 83,716 passengers (+ 9.57%) from January to May, although the number of actual 35 ships was down 7.89%. In May, by far the busiest month, there were 56,200 cruise passengers, an increase of 35.4%. Meanwhile, Alicante is also showing a May increase of 10.29%.

POLISHED OFF The Guardia Civil is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man who allegedly drank a cleaning product which was mistakenly served up as white wine as white wine in an establishment of the Castellon town of Benicarlo. The incident occurred on Sunday, at 14.47 hours, when agents of the local police received a 112 call from a customer of the bar in the Isabel de Villena square.

MIDSUMMER HOGUERAS CELEBRATIONS ll of last week, many visitors to Torrevieja will have witnessed the apparition of unusual creatures on the streets, and the papier mâché sculptures which will be burnt as part of the Hogueras, Midsummer night celebrations have been put on display. The two main areas of focus to see the creations are Barrio Acequión and Barrio El Calvario, where the streets are dressed in bunting and the artistic creations on display. A variety of events have been running through the weekend and continuing into the week, when the neighbours of the different areas come together to celebrate, in preparation for burning the effigies in a symbol ritual. The event in Torrevieja will culminate on the evening of the 23rd, starting at 9pm, on the Playa del Cura. On the eve of Midsummer, thousands of people normally gather on the beaches to celebrate through the purifying ritual of lighting a bonfire on the beach and (hopefully) jumping over it, finally ending with a dip in the sea, and fireworks on Paseo Juan Aparicio. Aside from the ritualistic element, the celebrations usually continue throughout the night as the partygoers celebrate the seasonal change in one of the most anticipated nocturnal events of the year. However, this is not a unique Torrevieja event, similar events take place across Spain but the main location for the bonfires and party locally is in Alicante, particularly in the San Juan area, the main focus of the event. Alicante celebrates a public holiday for the celebrations, after the event was declared as being of International Tourist Interest in 1983. This festival itself dates back to the times when Alicante farmers celebrated the longest day of the year for the harvesting of crops and the shortest night for the destruction of evil, a tradition which soon spread to Alicante, although the then town hall effectively tried to ban the

A

event before it began, issuing a notice stating, “Do not light bonfires in the streets, or shoot rockets on the night of San Juan”, with a penalty imposed on those who continued. However, in 1881, an oversight by the council meant that the proclamation was not published, and so, taking advantage, the residents of Alicante joined together in neighbourhood groups to create their own street parties. It was in 1928that the celebrations became official in the city of Alicante, founder José María Py urged the city council to give the celebration the same focus and attention as in Valencia, and so from tradition, the event which takes place today was officially born. For its part, Valencia celebrated the event officially from 1932, although there was a break for the Civil War between 1936 and 1939 throughout, and is the ultimate destination for anybody wanting to celebrate the fallas in true style. Valencia becomes awash with party spirit for the five days that conclude on Midsummer, with parades, bonfires and fireworks, much like the other celebrations, but on a much larger scale. Fireworks, bangers, fires and costumes, plus the burning of the models are all part of the event, with music and drinking to accompany the action, you have a choice of locations to celebrate. Maybe start small(er) with Torrevieja, go mid-range in Alicante, or travel to the ultimate party capital for fallas, Valencia.

MY MY LITTLE PONY! Orihuela local police intercepted a Walker on the CV-870 road in the Virgen del Camino and are this week, taking him in for questioning as a result. Not that any laws had been broken by the lone walker, but the fact that it was a four-legged pedestrian and walking unaccompanied raised their suspicions. Once the lone pony was taken into custody, for its own safety, the Asoka municipal animal rescue centre were asked to look after it whilst an investigation was launched to confirm his identity and address. The investigation ultimately revealing that the pony had ran away from the circus to find a home, and had escaped from a travelling fair which was in La Murada 3 months ago. The owner told the police that the pony had escaped and they were unable to find him, and so left him behind to fend for himself in the wilderness of Orihuela. The owner has made subsequent arrangements to return to Orihuela when the two will be reunited, one receiving his beloved pony, the other losing his last ditch attempt to join the free world and now returning to a life on the road with his animal and human companions.

LEGALISATION OF BUILDING WORKS By Martinez de la Casa Architects NEW VALENCIA LAW (LEY 5/2014, L.O.T.U.P) CHANGES THE MINIMUM TIME FROM 4 TO 15 YEARS. This new law which was introduced last year greatly affects the international community in Alicante. Up until now, any building, extension or pool could be legalised or it's description updated in the Title Deeds and afterwards registered in the Land Registry once it was 4 years old (with the exception of protected / special areas / inhabilitating participation quotas in Deeds). The only document needed was an Antiquity Certificate stating the building was over 4 years old. FROM NOW ON THIS PERIOD HAS EXTENDED TO 15 YEARS. Fortunately many of the Land Registries will still register (and thereby legalise) all extensions, pools or buildings done within a minimum of four years BEFORE this new law was established. Please note EVERY LAND REGISTRY NOW HAS DIFFERENT CRITERIAS SO IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ENQUIRE AT YOUR ASSIGNED LAND REGISTRY BEFORE TRYING TO LEGALISE OR UPDATE AN EXTENSION THAT WAS DONE WITHOUT THE CORRECT LICENSE. Therefore, all extensions made in LESS THAN 4 years BEFORE May 2014 cannot be registered until 15 years old. For example Orihuela's Land Registry (#1), is only registering extensions and/or pools in properties with Antiquity Certificates issued before August 20th. The rest of the process remains the same; needing an ANTIQUITY CERTIFICATE done by an Architect, at the Notary to update the Title Deeds (Escritura) with any alterations introduced to the property, such as pools or extensions done with or without a license. In the case of having done an extension or pool without a license, the Antiquity Certificate, sometimes also called “retrospective licence”, is also very useful to guard against possible sanctions/fines, and to prove the building works were done at least four years before this new law being applicable. As a result it's highly recommended to avoid putting off potential buyers, due to the existence of unregistered buildings even if done

with a license, to have your Antiquity Certficate ready. And in the case that registration is not possible, the Antiquity Certificate serves to offer any potential buyer the maximum possible security against Townhall penalties. If for your peace of mind and to have certified that your extension/pool was done before the implementation of this new law, you then wish to have your Antiquity Certificate issued, Martinez de la Casa Architects will arrange an appointment to survey the pool/extension requiring only your NIE and current Title Deeds. Later using satelitte images and software we check the age of the pool/extension (pictured is an example used in the process for Antiquity Certification) and combine this with the measurements and documentation taken during our on-site visit. Martinez de la Casa Architects will enquire on your behalf at the Land Registry to check if registration is allowed with regards to this new law. The Antiquity Certificate is stamped by the Official College of Architects and delivered within 7-10 days. The applicant can then either update and register the Title Deeds, or wait for change of Property Titleholder's at the Notary. Due to the surge in requests for Antiquity Certificates, Martinez de la Casa Arquitects has been able to greately reduce prices in the areas affected by this new law (Alicante), therefore the price of a Pool Antiquity Certificates are now at 190 €+IVA, and for Extensions plus Pool, or for the complete property, we can now offer the Antiquity Certificate at 270 €+IVA. The only condition in Alicante is that the building/pool to certify was built 4 years before the 20th August 2014. If your solicitors are working on your case, ask them to contact us to provide the Antiquity Certificate and we

will make the whole process easier, faster and cheaper for you. Testimonial “Many thanks for undertaking the work on the two certificates which I needed for my villa (Pool Antiquity Certificate & Energy Certification) within the time schedule agreed, at an extremely competitive price and without any communication issues. I would definitely recommend your services to anyone who requires work of this nature undertaking.” Mr A J Pyle of Zurgena Area. Martinez de la Casa Architects has experience in over 300 Antiquity Certificates and is one of the most prominent and respectable practises in the area, providing all types of Certificates and Licenses, amongst other services. They are the Number 1 company in EPC certificates (121€ inc IVA) in Murcia, Almeria, Alicante and likewise Number 1 for Antiquity Certificates. See over 100 reviews of their services or call on 665 810 411 if you want to arrange an appointment to have your Antiquity Certificate done (including free consultation and review of paperwork): www.martinezdelacasa.com. FORMER SAMARITANS PRESIDENT AWARDED B.E.M. By Lubbertus After nearly twenty years living overseas Chris Sumter has just returned to the UK to live in Clevedon having just retired as President of Samaritans in Spain. She had been president for the last four years but has been with the Samaritans 7 years as a Trustee. It came as a huge surprise to Chris to learn she had been nominated for the award of British Empire Medal in this year’s Queens Birthday Honours List. The citation is “For services to the British Community in Spain”. This reflects Chris’s ongoing help and support to people in need, not just her work with the Samaritans. For example she helped and supported survivors of the Boxing Day Tsunami in 2004 while living and working in Thailand. Chris took over as president of Samaritans in Spain from Stephen Ashley four years ago. He had inaugurated what was then called Costa Blanca Samaritans and built a very strong foundation, including all the legal requirements for

setting up the organisation. However, the service needed expanding. When Chris took over from Stephen it was still only operating four hours a day, seven days a week, with just the call centre. One other major obstacle was that it was virtually unknown of outside the Costa Blanca Region. With the help of a dedicated group of volunteers Chris began the process of expanding the organisation, getting its name and service out to the whole of Spain and the Islands. Together they introduced a 24 hour service and opened what is probably the only Samaritans combined call centre, drop-in centre and charity shop. With a massive campaign the Samaritans became a national, not just a local, service and a force to be reckoned with. Visiting English speaking prisoners in Spanish jails and supporting their

families became a very important element of their work. Just before Chris retired and returned to the UK a second drop-in centre was established in Madrid. Chris sees this award not just as recognition for all the work she has done over the years, but also a recognition of the hard work of all those involved in the Samaritans, both in Spain, the UK and around the world. She took the very sound foundations laid by Stephen and the original founders and built a solid framework upon that. Upon retiring she passed on this sound framework to the next generation who will complete the structure. Chris finally retired when she moved to Clevedon, but as all those who know her will attest, we probably haven’t seen the last of her helping others.

SUMMER BREAK FOR GARDENING CLUB The June meeting of the Vega Baja Garden John Howes with his winning marigolds Club was the final one of the season before the summer break. Members enjoyed an informal lunch, and a garden quiz, which had been prepared by Alan Davis, a member of the club. The marigold growing competition was judged by John Howes, an experienced RHS judge. Some months ago, members were given seeds, the aim being to produce the best flowering marigold plant. The winning plant was grown by Terry Sangwine, John commended it for its even and balanced shape and flowers. The meeting ended with the usual raffle of plants. The next meeting will be held after the summer break at Bar Trasgu, Calle Alicante 12, Formentera del Segura, on Monday 7th September at 2.15 for a 2.30 start. If you are interested in gardening and would like to come along to the meeting, please do so, you will be most welcome. EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Tuesday evening found us playing Vistabella in the Premier 20 league and as is normal and you would expect, the home rinks have quite an advantage. Hence the away rinks were lost by 4-0 and the home rinks won by 3-1, with the losing rink being by just the one shot and the overall shots by just 7, a great effort against a strong team. Home: Merv Armstrong 2117. Margaret and Ron Odell 16-17. John Cleal, John Skipper and Jim Gracie 24-15. Bob Easthope, Rob Clark, John Newell and Shirley Edwards 31-4. Away: Jane Hamill 1-21. Sheila Cooper and David Whitworth 14-19. Graham Day, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris 11-30. Terry Buswell, David Haynes, Richard Needham and Stew Hamill 15-17. On Friday we played La Siesta Hornets at home, an occasion we always enjoy, with enjoyment being of the highest priority. There was good bowls all round with El Rancho taking the rinks by 5-1. Sheila Cooper, Malc Sykes and Carolyn Harris 23-18. Bob Easthope, Jim Gracie and David Whitworth 25-19. John Cleal, Rob Clark, Mick Ager 19-16. Terry Buswell, John Newell and Merv Armstrong 15-21. Marion Haynes, Jane Hamill and Stew Hamill 18-16. June Whitworth, Richard Needham and John Skipper 30-7. But always remember that the result is not always an indication of how you have played, it also comes down to your colleagues, your opposition, the luck of the draw and all round luck on the day. For membership details contact Brian Taylor on 965077093 or at briantaylor_es@yahoo.co.uk or Carolyn Harris on 966774316 or at elranchobowls.secretary@gmail.com. Sponsored by Rightmove.

This prestigious 3 day tournament was held at Vistabella B.C. on 1315 June, and played in a 2 wood triples format. Together with good weather and fine organisation, the bowling was of a high standard with some very close results. In the semi-finals was Tony French, Maggie Furness and Martin Foulcer of Vistabella against Sandra Kavanagh, Yvonne Mallaburn and Frank Close of Emerald Isle, which went into the 18th end with one shot between the teams, with the E.I. trio winning the battle. The other semi was an all Vistabella game between

Steve Pearson, Annmarie Stevenson and Ian Kenyon against Beryl Regan, Andy Leggatt and Mike Regan, who struggled against a team who were on top form. The final of Ian’s trio against Frank’s was tooth and nail throughout the game culminating in equal scores after 18 ends, so an extra end was played, which Vistabella managed to hold. An excellent competition, played in a competitive but friendly and sportsmanlike manner, for which thanks must go to everybody taking part.

SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB

COUNTRY BOWLS REPORT

By Pat McEwan Both San Miguel Mavericks and Sheriffs had good wins this week in the VCL. The Mavericks won 10-2 at home against Monte Mar and the Sheriffs won 11-1 away at San Luis. The Christians played Mazarron at home and only managed 4 points. No results received from the Moors or Premier 20. The Australian Pairs started this week playing on Saturday evenings a change in rules - can get a bit confusing but good fun. Anyone wanting to put their names down to be a substitute should see Alan Campbell. The WASPS are still playing on Wednesday afternoons - come along at 1.30, pay 5 euros for hire of shoes and woods and get tuition if needed. An excellent way to make new friends. News flash - Yes, Margaret was definately plastered, I have seen photographic evidence !!!! For more information on San Miguel Bowls Club contact our President Eileen Potts, Telephone 966730376.

By StJohn Broadhurst No let up in the bowling schedule yet and after a busy weekend for two of our trips teams in the President’s Cup at Vistabella over the weekend of 13/15 June it was back to league bowling on Wednesday, 17 June when the Herons entertained Vistabella Vikings in the Valle in a VCL game. Despite some good performances from some of our bowlers the luck didn’t go the Herons way and it was the Vikings who ran out winners in all the disciplines. Overall shots Herons 71 Vikings 106. It was the same story on Thursday, 18 June against Vistabella in the SABA 4 Wood pairs league with the opposition winning both games, with a score of 21-53. The week ended on a high however for the Badgers in their SABA Harrier league match at San Luis on Friday, 19 June against the Hercules. There were close games on five of the six rinks which could have gone either way but in the end it was the Badgers who triumphed, winning five rinks as well as the long game. In triumphant mood this week were Brenda Jiggins, Andy White and Dot Davies 20-17. Ben Noke, John Rimmer and StJohn Broadhurst 23-20. Doreen Statham, Billy Price and Dennis Birkett 15-12. Del Gunning, Bryan Kirk and Karen Kirk 14-12. Carole Donnellan, Sheila Whitehall and Peter Whitehall 25-12. Overall shots Herons 109 (12 pts) Hercules 90 (2 pts).www.countrybowlsclub.com

LA MARINA BOWLS CLUB By Bobbie Sims VCL 2015 - Our game this week against Quesada Lions was a little unusual, both the ladies and men's singles had the same score in reverse, and the trips and rinks were the same score, ( unfortunately not in our favor). Playing our men's singles was Peter Parsons 11-21, and our lady was Janet Parsons 21-11, the pair of Tom Spencer and Alan Castle had a brilliant game against Peta Rhodes and Lisa Bonsor winning by 25-14, trips were Margaret McLaughlin, Mike Smith and Terry Perchard 9-27 and the rinks that followed suit with the same score 9-27,were Barbara Forshaw, Martin Butler, Bill and Bobbie Sims, points totaled out at 4-8 and shots were 75-100. LA MARINA PILOTS A big win for the Pilots today against Vistabella Greeners, points were 10-4 and shots of 99-83, It looks like there were a lot of close games in this match, teams this time were Angie Butler, Berni Carr and John Morgan, 16-13, Peter Bailey, Jack Chorlton and Tom Spencer, 17-19, Mo Taylor, Mike Smith and Dave Taylor, 11-17, Mo Barker, Cliff Rawlingson and Dave O'Sullivan, 18-13, we had two more winning teams with the same shot difference, Loretta Rae, Barry Sadler and Dave Lewis, 18-10 and Carol Smith, John Rae and Margaret Finlayson, 19-11. Well done everyone.

GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB By Steve Hibberd Welcome to Greenlands Bowls club forum. We are situated close to Zocos Sunday market, and a short drive from both Ciudad Quesada and Los Montesinos. The complex also boasts a golf course, set in rural surroundings. Apart from competing in local leagues, where club membership is essential, there is also a Sat morning bottle club, in which the general public can take part alongside members (bowls and shoes can be hired at the club). Last weeks meet was won jointly by Jim McLean and Mike Keating, with Terry Lawton taking 3rd prize. Before I forget, this will be my last contribution as temporary scribe, but club president Chris Dewer will be taking over the reigns until a permanent reporter has been appointed. Therefore, could all team captains send future results over to Chris please. Now onto the more serious stuff! Following a slight blip in proceedings, Jasmines got back to winning ways in the Weds morning VCL. At home to Emerald Isles Dukes, they were victorious in all 5 disciplines, recording an excellent 12-0 result to boot. So, with only 3 games to play, they sit proudly at the top, some 5 point clear, but with hard games still to play, more of the same would be nice. Well done: Cas Thomas (ladies singles) 21-10. Mike Edwards (mens singles) 219. Sheila Stead, Tom Hill 19-10. Sue Johnson, Avril Toozer, Barry Collins 24-16. Sandra Heath, Janet Webb, Florence Edwards, Steve Hibberd 20-13. Our other VCL side (Mimosas) had a rest day, 2 of which kindly marked for the Jasmines. Thanks to Daves Webb and Gidding, for helping us out. Not such a good week for our teams in the other 2 leagues I'm afraid. In Tues Prem 20, week 2, only Dave Webb 21-7 (singles), and Ron Stansfield, Tony Hodges, Allan Brown & Barry Collins 17-16 (rinks) (both at home) won, as the team went down 4-14 against San Miguel. Finally, on to Fri SABA trips league. Gladiators hosted a team from San Miguel, but with only Cas Thomas, Sheila Stead & Barry Collins (I think, as no results received!), plus Sue Johnson, Steve Hibberd & Mike Edwards winning, a 4-10 score was recorded. HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY VILLAMARTIN Mar Menor entertained the golfers from the Hub this week for the Society´s 5th Grand Prix event of the season. The IRM course is a popular venue for the “Hubbers” and will be played once again in October. Always a welcome visitor, P.G.A. member Neil Goodison enjoyed the comfortable layout of Mar Menor and was joined in a formidable four ball of Andy Chequer playing off 3.2, Roger Duncan 5.2, Neil himself off 1.5 and Lee Holtham, a more modest 16. As expected Chequer and Goodison ensured a share of the 2´s pot, both birdying the par 3, 198 yard fourteenth. Dave Lethaby made his stake earlier in the round on the par 3, 168 yard second, ironically “blobbing” the fourteenth. Some good, but not outstanding scores were recorded in the main competitions, Warren Harris making it back to back victories with a 37 point total off 8.9 and Barry Lane also recording the same score off 11.3 to take the visitors title. Goodison was a trifle disappointed with his 31 points, but checking his card makes you feel a little disgruntled as his 8 pars plus 3 birdies are a pipe dream for most of us. The Hub has enjoyed sponsorship from P.J.´s Rentacar for the past 3 seasons, the car rental and airport transfer company pleased to be associated via Ali and Trevor Scammell, regular members of the Society. They are now joined by soon to be married Liz Richardson and Lee Holtham of “Photo Lounge” the popular and zany way of recording your wedding, anniversaries and birthday memories. Regular players themselves they are now sponsoring the seasons nearest the pin competitions. Visit their website THEPHOTOLOUNGE.ES RESULTS: Photo Lounge N.T.P. Hole 7 Barry Lane, Hole 14 Andy

Yes our 1st.visit to this course built within the valley of 2 small mountains way back in 1989 making it one of the oldest here on the Costa’s and while it may look on paper a reasonable easy course to play it does have a few hazards that will catch you out however it has to be said that we had 30 members playing and it was expected there would be some high scores and there were, some 21 members breaking the 30 point barrier for our Stableford Competition. The course was fair to good in condition with greens being perfect but strange to see one hole the Par 4, 13th at 303 mtrs. off the yellow tee reduced by over 100 due to being repaired which looks as if it will be a long time in the making. There was a lot of hollow tinning going on on the fairways and the green keeper was busy on the greens making them look even better than they were. However the results. Category 1. 1st. Eric Garside 35 points 2nd. Con Moore 34 3rd. David Green 33 Category 2. 1st. Peter Kerr 36 points 2nd. Mick O’Brien 33 on c/b 3rd. Brian Coombes. Category 3. 1st. After the game all returned to El Raso Restaurant for the results and FREE Tapas supplied once again by Igor and his team and today as a special treat from the owners some lovely Caviar served on small toasted biscuits…..umm very nice, thank you El Raso. Our next game is at our home course El Plantio, which has been rumoured to have been closed down believe us or not, it is VERY MUCH OPEN for business and we will be here next Wednesday 24th. Following that we are at Vistabella on the 27th. and Font del Llop on the 1st.July and six months of the year have gone. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Around and About the courses - ALICANTE ’ This Seve Ballesteros designed course of 6,333 metres is on the outskirts of Alicante City and close to the San Juan beaches and was opened in 1998 and is unique because the course is a Par 72 consisting of six par 3 holes, six Par 4 holes and six Par 5 holes. On the Par 5 14th hole you actually play over ‘Roman ruins’ and the lake on the 9th hole is in the shape of an ‘S’ for Seve. The large split level clubhouse has excellent restaurant (which is currently closed for renovation) changing and shower facilities and well stocked pro-shop with welcoming and helpful staff. The practise facilities are excellent with a 70 bay driving range, practise bunkers and chipping and putting greens. The course is relatively flat winding between houses and apartments in a typically American style but with some long distances between greens and tees this is not a course for the walking golfers amongst you, hence the inclusion of the buggy in the standard price. The course architect (Seve) has drawn on all of his experience around the globe to produce a golf course that offers a little for everyone with reachable par 5’s,long Par 3’s and strategically well positioned bunkers and water hazards. This is very much a risk and reward course, play positively and well and you will score well BUT play in a negative fashion and badly and this will soon reflect on your scorecard. If you are planning to visit the Costa Blanca and play golf then very simply you MUST build a round of golf at Alicante into your schedule particularly during the summer months when the price including buggy is superb value. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. ANNE MCGRATH PERPETUAL MEMORIAL GOLF COMPETITION The competition was held on the 19th of June 2015 at VISTABELLA GOLF COURSE however due to a mix up by the course administration only 32 players could support the event. Players were helping to raise financial support for the Oncology Department at Torrevieja Hospital and since its inception this annual charity event has raised thousands of euros which has gone to helping the seriously sick and needy. As usual the course was in excellent playing condition and with lots of prizes up for grabs, including a hole in one for 100 euro on Hole 8 sponsored by Mick McGrath, meant players would want to be at their best. Following the competition players were invited back to the Bull Flanagan Bar / Restaurant in Quesada for the prize winner’s presentation, which gave them all an opportunity to sample a refreshing drink, before having a choice of a free lunch sponsored by Chris Stott on behalf of the owners of Bull Flanagan. Todays event winner was the Bryan Andrews with an exceptional score of 42 points and he received the Anne McGrath Perpetual Memorial Trophy and his name would be added to the winners honours list. Second and third places went to Terry Thirkill and Bill Peters scoring 36 and 35 points respectively. Best front 9 went to Bill Maher and best back 9 to John Horton. Nearest the pin winners on the par three holes were Bill Maher on hole 4, Bryan Andrews on hole 8, John Horton on hole 15 but to the relief of Mick McGrath no one managed to get the hole in one . Nearest to the starters drive was Ken Enever and longest drive on hole 3 went to Ton Gijzen. Winners of the football cards were Colin D, Brian A, Gill B, and Debs. Winner of the best par 3s was Ken Enever and best par 5s Brian Ead and winner of the 28ers draw was Graham Hall. Bull Flanagan Golf Society Captain and event mentor Mick McGrath thanked all those who had made the effort to take part in the Anne McGrath Perpetual Memorial Charity event and hoped that everyone had enjoyed

the days golf. Mick also expressed his gratitude to all sponsors for their generous support with a special mention to all those who had assisted in a variety of ways, making this another successful event in memory of his late wife Anne. Society Secretary Bill Fantom on completing all calculations assisted Mick with the presentations. Bill Fantom also reflected on another successful day’s golf and thanked everyone for their attendance and concluded reminding members that the July match would be at Bonalba on 17th July at a cheaper rate. He also informed members that two team from Bull Flanagan had entered a competition at Alicante the previous Tuesday and the team of Ken Enever and Chris Smith carded a creditable 36 points however the team of Brian Smith and Bill Fantom won the competition with a carded score of 46 points and each received a new golf club from Alicante Golf.

LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY AT VISTABELLA 35 intrepid members and guests converged on Vistabella golf course with threatening skies overhead. The weather did not disappoint and the heavens opened before the first golfers left the first tee. The rain fell for nearly the complete round with only a short respite midway. The thunder and lightening were visible in the distance but, despite this, some very good results were returned. Congratulations to Eric who is now looking forward to the inevitable cut. The only knockout match played was between two of our lady members with Sarah McCabe coming from 2 down to beat Elspeth Craig. Some very wet golfers returned to the La Marina Sports Centre for some wonderful tapas, courtesy of Paolo & Helena, a drink or two and many tales of the days experiences. Results: Nearest the Pin; Hole 4 Roy Weallans, Hole 8 Mike Davies, Hole 15 Roy Weallans Gold Division: 33 points Mike Davies Silver Division: 39 points Eric Taylor Best Guest: 27 points Julie Hayward Our next competition is on Thursday June 25th at Lo Romero GC. First tee time 09.44a.m. when we will be contesting the Presidents

Cup. Our next social event is a Summer Dance to be held at La Marina Sports & Social Centre on the evening of June 25th when the presentations will be made to the day’s winners. Contact Alan or Elspeth on 634 347 788 for further information for either of these events.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY By Mike Chapman We started the week with a 6x6x6 with one score counting on the first six holes, two on the second six holes and three on the final six holes. Conditions were superb for golf and the team coming in with an exceptional score of 91 pts to win by 7 pts were Brian Townend, Ulrike Barth, Annemarie Weisheit and Brian Staines. In second on 84 pts were Olga Douglas, Allen McClusky, Maria Oldenziel and 'Albert'. On Wednesday we played for our Captain's Day Trophy which is one of our major competitions and takes the form of a 2 ball better ball. The weather conditions were perfect for golf and there were many strong looking pairings mainly comprising a male/women combination which tend to fair better given the nature of the Las Ramblas course. This proved true yet again with such pairings taking five

of the top six places. The winners with a very good score of 46 pts were Rod Doel and Joyce McClusky who are pictured above with the trophy. There were five teams on 44 pts but it was Allen McClusky and Marleen Billen who took second place beating Lindsay Forbes and Olga Douglas, Geoff Biggerstaff and Maria Oldenziel, Ulrike Barth and Alan Douglas and Mike Chapman and Barry Holtham on the dreaded count back. Other prize winners were: Nearest the Pin: 6th hole Ron Phipps, 15th hole Lee Holtham 2's Club: Barry Holtham and Lindsay Forbes On Friday again in perfect conditions we played a 4 ball Texas Scramble. The winning team who all contributed equally to record an excellent score of 57.2 including eight birdies were Dave Pulling, Rod Doel, Mike Chapman and regular guest Dave Lewis.

PLAYERS COMMIT TO TORRY By Steve Hibberd Firstly, news of 2 pre season friendlies at Vicente Garcia Stadium. On Sat 18 Jul, newly relegated from La Liga, Andalucia based Cordoba will provide a stern test for Pedreno's new look Torry side. But before the match (prov 8.30pm ko), fans are invited to come and help paint the stadium from 10am, where food and drink will be provided. Then on Fri 24 Jul, Hull City will visit as part of their week long trip to the Costa Blanca. Training commences on 13 Jul, when several youngsters will be flying over from UK for trials. Five players have put pen to paper, ensuring another season at the club. Ever present, and last years player of the season, goalkeeper Oscar is one player we did not want to lose, and we haven't. Senor Presidente's son, full back Vicente, will be embarking on his 6th season for us. Another long serving member is club captain Jorge, who is now approaching his 7th season. Midfielder Burguillos is another loyal player, about to enter his 6th season. Finally, the old man of the team, 37 year old Carrasco will turn out for us yet again (if his legs allow him - only joking Carrasco!). Another fans favourite, last seasons golden boot winner, is currently having talks concerning extending his stay. Go on Rafa, you know you want to. Finally, a new scheme entitled the 200 club, offers companies 2 season tickets, and entry into a draw for name and logo shirt, all for 200 euros. STADIUM SPRUCE UP FOR TORRY By Chris Darwen The players maybe having their summer break but they are still working hard behind the scenes at CD Torrevieja. With the coaching team confirmed for next season, attention has turned to the stadium for different reasons. Built in the 1970’s, not much has changed at Estadio Vicente Garcia which is just opposite Sports City. With the last coat of paint being applied nearly a decade ago, club director Chris Darwen and his Business and Community Manager Barrie Crawford are appealing to the local community to support them in their efforts to freshen the ground up. “Nobody can deny that the Vicente Garcia is a beautiful place to watch and play football. I’ve watched a lot of games across the world and not many beat being here on a Sunday evening as the sun sets,” says Chris. "Sadly, the ground itself is looking a little tired and we are

ELCHE PAY UP On a statement on the club website last Friday Elche CF, who finished 13th in the top division, say that they have now settled all their tax liabilities with the Hacienda which has seen their relegation from La Liga to Segunda A and the club say that they have now launched an appeal with the government disciplinary committee for sports (TAD. A spokesman said that the appeal will be heard on Tuesday (23rd June) although when asked on Friday about Elche's statement, La Liga president Javier Tebas suggested the appeal had little chance of success. "The Elche case is a closed case," Tebas told reporters after his organisation's general assembly in Villarreal. If this is indeed the case it will show once again that there absolutely one rule in Spanish football for the rich and powerful and another for the remainder. Should Elche fail in their appeal, Eibar will remain in La Liga after ending the campaign in the bottom three.
