The result is a fresh government ruling in a minority, and the opposition led largely by the PSOE members of the previous government, and so the entire situation has led to an almost complete shake up of the political picture in Orihuela. terms of the ex-pat population, replacing Martina Scheurer in the coastal post. Like Scheurer, Álvarez is at least a resident of the Orihuela Costa, and so lives in the area of her concern. Therefore, she is considered best placed to deal with the problems of one of the largest and most populated areas of the municipality, with the most diverse mixture of residents and problems.
The councillors have all taken up their respective roles already and are now in the transitional period of assessing the work that needs to be done. Meanwhile, the practice of forming the different elements of government is continuing. The Board of Governors will be formed by the councillors Paco Sáez, Rafael Almagro, Mariola Rocamora, Sabina Galindo, Begoña
Cuartero, Dámaso Aparicio, Miguel Ángel Fernández, Sofía Álvarez, amd the Mayor himself, Emilio Bascuñana. On Thursday, it was announced that the Procurement Committee is formed by Fernando Domínguez as President, along with Arturo López and Maria José Ros. Paco Sáez will hold the roles as spokesperson for the Partido Popular.
TEN POINT ACTION PLAN FOR TORREVIEJA he new government of Torrevieja has announced their ten-point action plan of priorities they intend to achieve as they move towards cleaning up the political history of the municipality. Key areas focus on saving money, avoiding corruption and ensuring transparency in government. The councillors now, for example, will no longer use mobile phones paid for by public money. Not only will this avoid scandals that rocked the previous government when some of them were found to be using their mobile illegally, it also helps to solve a long term problem of an incorrectly awarded contract for the supply of the mobile phones. In 2013, whilst in opposition, it was brought to light that the annual bill for the town hall was in the region of 300,000 euro, most of which can now be directed into services for the people of the municipality.
T
The town hall will be dropping charges against officers from the Local Police who were facing a range of offences for protesting during the plenary meetings. The new government feel that their protests about working conditions were a legitimate way of raising awareness of their plight and that the matters of complaint should have been dealt with, rather than filing court proceedings. They will also make a statement against corruption, by removing the names given to some municipal buildings and other titles given to those found guilty in corruption cases. This includes the removal of the title of “adopted son” given to former Valencia President Francisco Camps, and the sports facility named after Infanta Cristina. The town hall will also create an office where residents facing eviction can obtain help and assistance and there will be a minutes silence in all town hall meetings in the event of a case of domestic violence being recorded.
Government spokesperson, Fanny Serrano
Religious events will now be voluntary for town hall members and councillors and will no longer form part of their enforced agenda. The government spokesperson, Fanny Serrano, listed the points in a press conference this week, explaining how the
government intend to achieve all the points of the plan within the first 100 days of government, and so the clock is now ticking to see just how much they can achieve in such as short space of time.

OFFICIAL REPORT REVEALS ‘PASCUAL FLORES’ DEFICIENCIES According to the councilor It’s going to cost a great deal of money to keep this magnificent schooner afloat
The Pascual Flores returned to Torrevieja last Tuesday, two days ahead of schedule, following three weeks in an Algeciras dry dock where it has been undergoing an 18,000 euro programme of maintenance and repairs. Despite the relative young age of this replica ship, construction on which was only finished in 2008 at a cost of over 4.5 million euros, the maintenance report given to Councillor Alejandro Blanco following completion of the work reveals the dramatic extent of its deterioration now said to require major reconstruction as a result of a number of deficiencies which include both water leakage through the hull and loss of engine oil. Current maintenance costs are said to be 300,000 a year with the extra budget now required for the additional work is not yet known. This would be expenditure which the current government had not expected to have to find although it was thought that it might be possible to hold accountable the company that built the ship. The technical report reflects the poor state of the ship that Blanco described as "disastrous". The Councillor said that during its journey back from Algeciras, constant water leaks required operation
of the bilge pump for about 20 minutes in every hour. The schooner is also in need of restoration work to a number of masts and spars which are showing signs of major decay and which in all likelihood will possibly need replacing. The report contrasts with the statements made on the eve of the departure of the schooner to enter dry dock in Algeciras by the director of the 'Nao Victoria Historic Ships Foundation', Jose Fernandez de Cabo, who said that it was "in good condition” and only in need of modest repairs. As a result of the report Councillor Blanco suggested that the future of the schooner in Torrevieja waters may now well be in doubt. He said that the cost to the city, which appeared to have resulted from a lack of maintenance, had already topped 6 million euros and the whole situation would now be subject to a feasibility study by a government team. The councillor also met with the ship's captain, Manuel Murube Seville, who explained first-hand the condition of 'Pascual Flores' during the voyage between Torrevieja and Algeciras. So, for now it is uncertain what the future of this controversial ship might hold. The choices are to invest in it’s repair to re-establish it as a seaworthy boat so that it can go back to sea, to cruise the ‘world’ and promote the city of Torrevieja, or simply retain it in Torrevieja Marina as a museum, either in or out of the water. Either way, whatever the solution that is finally adopted, there will be a need to spend a great deal of additional public money to keep it afloat and avoid this magnificent ship ending up on the seabed.

tlement from crops that were locally produced, with evidence unearthed of terraces, farming tools and many other remains and relics from the period.
The dig is being jointly funded by the museum and the Alicante City Council and following the recent visit of museum director Manuel Olcina it was announced that the site can now be accurately dated back to the Algaric people between 2300BC and 1550BC, a period better known as the Bronze Age.
Excavations first began in the area almost a hundred years ago but they were brought to an end when archaeologists thought that they had stumbled on a burial site. It was only in recent years, by using rather more modern techniques, that historians realised that they had stumbled upon a much larger population of more than a thousand people, part of a much larger settlement formed in the shape of a triangle and taking in southern Alicante, Almeria, and Murcia.
Evidence now shows that during the period the residents were able to change their culture from one of hunting to farming, thereby enabling them to feed a much larger set-

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney PLAYING THE GAME One of the many benefits of living in the Canary Islands is that, as residents, we are entitled to half price travel to the other islands, as well as to the Spanish Peninsular. It is a discount well worth having but, as many residents will already know, the rules keep changing. It's not just a simple matter of a one off application for a certificate to be presented to the airline or shipping company, but a repeated six month document renewal process, where one appears at the Town Hall, presents assorted documents, which vary according to the month and mood of the officiating clerk, and payment of a small fee. If we are fortunate, we escape within an hour or so clutching the precious piece of paper that will give us a healthy discount off our travel costs. On the other hand, we could be there for most of the morning, which is why taking a chair, water and a packet of sandwiches is always highly recommended. In theory of course, all that should be necessary is to enter our National Identity numbers when we make the booking with the airline, which the system should automatically check against the register of residents for a particular municipality. Of course, life is never quite that simple and I still recall a nasty incident at the airport, which resulted in a panic taxi ride from the airport back to my home to collect the precious document, despite the system having confirmed my discount entitlement, and returning to the airport with just minutes to spare before the flight took off. Needless to say, I was not amused, and it was particularly hurtful when the offending clerk could not be bothered to give the document even a cursory look; she just gave me a smirk as I headed through check in. It was just one of those games that are played over here, and on this occasion I had not played the game very well. This incident confirms my long-standing view that nothing is ever quite as it seems, and we sometimes unwittingly pop into an 'Alice in Wonderland' situation with no hope of escape. Just play the game. Of course, some readers will be thinking, "Why doesn't he do it online?" Yes, again, that is possible, in theory, but victims still have to attend the Town Hall to pay the fee. Payment on line? Just forget it and play the game. This time, the counter clerk required a photocopy of the residency
document before she would proceed. I didn't like to point out that they already had all the information required on their systems, since we have been doing the same thing for the last umpteen years. I asked if I could get a copy of the document in the building. The clerk grimaced, pointing to the security guard. "He'll get one for you, if he feels like it," she growled. The security guard seemed to be a very nice man, who actually smiled and nodded, made a small charge before he disappeared upstairs with our residency documents. Experience has taught me that the Spanish love nothing more that reams of paper, and if any important-looking paper is offered to them it is immediately grabbed, whether it is useful or not, and rarely ever seen again. Incidentally, this is the one piece of essential, possibly life saving advice that I give to all would be expats. Never, ever hand over an original document, unless you make several copies first. It is a game of chance that is often played with the newly arrived and over-enthusiastic expat. You will never win; so just accept that once you hand over an original document it is gobbled up into the Spanish bureaucratic system, and that is the last that you will ever see of it. Fortunately, there are very rare exceptions, and on this occasion, the very nice security guard reappeared clutching two crisp
photocopies, as well as willingly returning the original documents. This must be a first! Once we had the photocopies, we queued at the cash machine for a ticket. Panic set in when we realised that we had only three euros and we needed four and that the machine would not accept the new ten euro notes. Fortunately, I also had a twenty euro note and unwilling as I am to plunge notes into machines, this one had the good grace to accept the note, before eventually spewing out two receipts, as well as the correct change. Maybe, just maybe I was winning this particular game. We made our way back to the lady at the issuing desk, who actually smiled and told us that she would be with us in a moment. A smile and a polite greeting at the Town Hall? Now that is a pleasant surprise. The next part of the story may sound politically incorrect, as well as sexist, but frankly I really do not care. I have often maintained that women are far better at multi tasking than men; if you want a job doing well, be it decorating or rodding the drains, possibly at the same time, then get a good woman to do the job. What follows next is a perfect example of what I mean. The smiling lady called us over to her counter. She examined our receipts and attempted to staple them to the precious travel documents. Sadly, the stapler had run out of staples, which is why she performed her party trick. With her right hand she opened the stapler, retrieved a new strip of staples from a packet in her drawer, inserted them into the stapler, stapled both documents at the same time as she was bonking another client’s documents with her left hand, as well as answering their questions. In addition, she answered a telephone call with the receiver trapped somewhere between her neck, ample bosoms and shoulder blade. It was a truly impressive sight that left me speechless. I really should have given her a round of applause, but I restrained myself and we left clutching the precious pieces of paper. A visit to the Town Hall is always so exciting, just as long as we play the game. The accident occurred on the Corona glacier in the Ala-Archa National Park at a height of 4620 meters, when the trio were caught in a snow avalanche. TOE-GATE: JEREZ MAYORESS' TOES BECOME INTERNET SENSATION The new Socialist mayor of Jerez Mamen Sanchez was being sworn in following the recent municipal elections when her toes caught the attention of a local photographer. The new mayoress was wearing open wore heeled sandals with her little toes sticking out at an uncomfortable angle on either side of her shoes leading to speculation about a 'sixth toe' and hundreds of internet memes. But Ms Sanchez took the whole thing in her stride laughing at the fact that she was making the headlines for something as bizarre as her feet. Almost as soon as the inauguration photo had been taken it went viral on social media sites showing her little toes, which were sticking out of the shoes at an extremely uncomfortable angle. Quite a number of social media users then posted photographs of their own little toes with the hashtag International Sticky Out Toe Day, leading others to ask if this could see the birth of a new fashion.

The rest, as they say, is history...with the individual making a quick getaway. Needless to say the note was firmly tucked up in his back pocket as the resident looked helplessly on! paper, regarding the new Torrevieja government. No doubt that young and willing Eduardo Dolon was doing his best for Torrevieja during his short mandate, but his idea of trying to stop his predecessor going to jail didn't help him, plus some lack of transparency with the community, rested him some votes. On the other hand the people in Torrevieja had their own opinions in the past election, and for one reason or another, decided that enough was enough, and a political change was needed, and JM Dolon, the new Mayor, an experienced politician, and a Green man, loved by a lot of people in Torrevieja, must have a chance to do well with his new friends.

S
We have all heard of the great military campaigner “ El Cid”. But how many of us know that he was born in the year 1048 just 2 miles north of the attractive city of Burgos. Later he was to grow up and be educated in that city. It is strange indeed to to walk along streets that were once trodden by a young man who was to become probably the worlds most famous soldier of fortune. Stranger still, is the thought that he never saw the magnificent Gothic cathedral which now dominates the city centre, but which was not constructed until more than a century after his death. This is a city which has seen the presence of notorious warriors like Napoleon Bonaparte, The Duke of Wellington, and many of the Catholic monarchs. A city which has played a major role in the history of Spain . Even the modern day warrior, General Franco used this city as his headquarters in the early stages of the Spanish civil war. What a pleasant surprise therefore to find a beautifully built, well preserved old city, with sturdy old stone walls, an ancient city gate, magnificent cathedral and beautiful tree lined walkways along banks of the river Arlanzon. All this sitting below a medieval castle which sits astride the hilltop overlooking the city Not far away on the North coast of Spain is the Basque city of Bilbao. A rejuvenated city which truly experienced the horrors of the Spanish civil war, but which has “risen from the ashes “ to become a bustling modern city. Parks and walkways line the banks of the river Bilbao. In the “Casco Viejo” hundreds of street cafés line the cobbled streets. A cable car climbs the hillside. Trams and buses compete for space in the busy streets. Here you can also visit one of only 3 Guggenheim museums to be found anywhere
i n the world. This incredible gravity defying structure which houses a unique collection of art and sculptures of America and Europe from the mid 20th century until the present has to be seen to be believed. It is not likely that you will see anything like it again. Now to Logroño and the Rioja wine country. Logroño is a small city which more than anything is famed for its tapa bars. This is a day of indulgence. Because immediately after spending the early part of the day, sightseeing and trying out the tapas, there is a visit to one of the largest and most famous vineyards and bodegas, not just in Rioja country, but in Spain. At the end of an exciting bodega visit, you have the chance to sit on the balcony sipping a glass of Rioja wine whilst surrounded on all sides by the vineyards and mountains of Rioja. Heaven must be like this!! On the homeward journey an overnight stop in the capital city of Madrid puts the icing on the cake. City centre hotels are used in both Burgos and Madrid. Giving you both cities on the doorstep of your hotel. This marvellous 6 day outing is offered by “Davids' Coachtrips SL” for only 299€ B&B and including all day trips /bodega entry. Dates 19-24 July. Reservations can be made online at www.coachtripsonline.com or by calling direct on (0034) 966 78 5910.

INSENSITIVE MAYOR The independent group of Los Montesinos, led by Pilar Paredes, has criticised the salaries of the new town councilwhich she says amounts to 118,651.37 euros. The remuneration is expected to be approved in the plenary dominated by the PSOE. According to Paredes the PSOE mayor will take an annual salary of EUR 36323.28 plus Social Security totalling 48901.15 while two additional PSOE councilors, Rosa Moran and Joaquin Garcia, will each earn 26689.74 euros a year (gross 34875.11) each.
NEXT PSOE PM Despite the fact that Political parties in Spain don’t necessarily put forward the party leader to run for prime minister, Spain's opposition Socialists have named party leader Pedro Sanchez to run for prime minister in the next general election, due by the end of the year. Sanchez, aged 43, took the reins in July last year after a crushing defeat by Podemos causing the previous leader, Socialist veteran Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, to step down.

UNION CONDEMNS STATE OF GUARDIA CIVIL CARS Following the breakdown of a Guardia Patrol car, and the subsequent breakdown of the vehicle that was sent out to recover it’s officers, la Asociación Nueva Coproper (ANC), which represents over 500 regional Guardia officers, has said that the general state of its aging vehicle fleet is deplorable. And neither is the problem limited to the region of Alicante with similar problems arising throughout the whole community on all too frequent occasions. Last week two officers were stranded by the side of the road between Torrevieja and Crevillente when their vehicle from the SUV Unit Public Safety Command (USECIC) shuddered to a halt. Having radioed in for assistance they emptied the vehicle of equipment, including their rifles, and deposited them by the side of the road as they waited to be
picked up. But unfortunately the replacement vehicle also developed mechanical problems whilst en route. ANC claims that there are many other examples of such occurrences caused, for the most part, by the age of the vehicle fleet, including vehicles used to move around prisoners by staff at Villena jail.
TV Ban on Bullfighting Denied
Thanks to the majority votes of the ruling Partido Popular, the culture committee in the Spanish congress has rejected proposals to ban bullfighting broadcasts on television. The motion was proposed by the Izquierda Plural and had the support of all other parliamentary groups. During the debate, the Izquierda Plural were critical of various initiatives implemented by the PPwhich aimed at promoting bullfighting, paying par-
ticular attention to an event which was broadcast on TV in May, at a time when children would be watching television, something which hadn´t been done since 2013. A number of child protection associations have also expressed concerns over the broadcasts and want them at least moving to a time when children would not be watching, on account of the brutal nature of the events and the shocking images portrayed, which they believe are harmful to children.

CLR LOSE ORIHUELA SUMMER COURT CASE The courts in Elche have dismissed a case brought by former Orihuela councillors Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio López-Bas of CLR, brought against the then acting mayor of Orihuela, Antonio Zapata. CLR had complained to the courts that by not having the plenary meeting in August of last year, and by moving it to September, it violated their fundamental rights. However, the judge felt that there was no requirement to hold the meeting in August, especially as this is not a normal working month for the town hall, and so dismissed the case, condemning Pedro Mancebo and Juan Ignacio López-Bas to pay the court costs. The Socialist Party issued a statement about the “absurd attempt by the opposition to discredit and question the reputation of the Socialist councillors”, as their “attitude and leadership of the government was successful and with scrupulous respect for the law”.

Garage and Work shop Inspections Incr e asing Officers from the Guardia Civil carried out 6,548 inspections of car mechanical workshops in 2014, and found a total of 17,070 administrative violations. The information was released this week which details the activities of the law enforcers in collaboration with garage and vehicle maintenance association. Illegal and unlicensed garages are considered a risk on account of some of them endangering road safety, environmental requirements, tax and social security evasion and providing unfair competition to those who operate within the confines of the law. During the month of October last year the Guardia Civil intensified inspections of garages, the result being 238 being forced to shut their doors permanently. Of the infractions identified during the inspections, 61.7% were for non-compliance with environmental regulations, 27.9% were for municipal license deficiencies or breach of industry standards, and the remaining 10.4% were violations of other regulations relating to social security or tax legislation. The Director General of the Guardia Civil pointed out how the number of inspections of these premises has risen from just 61 in 2011, to 6,548 in 2014, resulting in a huge hike in reports from 308 complaints in 2011, to 17,070 in 2014, thus showing the commitment of the body to eradicate the problem. Details of how to ensure that the garage or workshop you use is legal, and the reasons why this is important, can be found on the website, n332.es.

BEACH SECURITY LOCKERS LAUNCHED AT LA ZENIA Last year, Orihuela took a leap into the future, by having the first beach in the world which hosted a secure and automated locker system for bathers. This year, in conjunction with contracted beach facility provider Chiringuitos del Sol, the lockers return once again but this time to a brand new location and offering even more than ever before, part of the ever increasing facilities being installed on the beaches of the municipality, which is no wonder that Orihuela can boast more Blue Flags and accreditations than just about anywhere else. The lockers have an integrated information screen with them, available in a variety of languages, including English, which will guide you through the process of acquiring your locker. Although they were hugely successful in keeping many belongings of many beach goers secure last summer, this year there have been a few changes which makes the service even better. The biggest change has been to the pricing structure. Now, you not only pay for the day, you can book by the hour and even the whole week. The longer you rent a locker the cheaper it is, but at just 1 euro per hour, it´s a bargain already when you consider the risk of losing your belongings. The price for the day is a bargain at just 5 euro, but it´s only 25 euro for the week, to come and go as much as you please. Not only that, just like last year, if you rent a locker you also get free high speed Wi-Fi on the beach. You can also subscribe to the Wi-Fi on its own, if you don´t want a locker.
When you reach the locker unit you simply use the guided process which explains every step on the new and easier to see screen, pay by credit or debit card, or in cash by coins and the system allocates you a locker and number and delivers a small plastic token with a secure barcode on. A simple scan of the barcode on the “magic eye” of the locker will start the process of releasing the locking mechanism, allowing you to securely leave your belongings out of temptations way. Once finished, lock the door and take your taken with you, maybe tied around your wrist with one of the provided bands, and enjoy they day at the beach. The whole process is secure and automated, but whereas computerisation tends to replace workers in many of the factories around the world and such, this system also generates work for local people. On the Orihuela Costa, there is now a full time employee who looks after the lockers and provides support whenever needed. Fluent in both Spanish and English, you can be reassured that, although unlikely, if you do run into problems there is somebody on hand to help. The brains behind the scheme, Jef Van Hyfte who created the idea along with Koen Mortelmans, explained that “we envision expansion next year to have several beaches in the north as in the south of Spain who are hiring mobile lockers. Therefore, we intend to hire more people in the upcoming years”.
Rica, Brazil, Portugal and so on. We now also have a unit in Antwerp subway station in Belgium and we foresee a steady growth, mostly in Spain but also in other countries”.
Jef also explained how the system has received worldwide interest, as they “weekly receive requests from all over the world, the USA, Costa
You can read more about the lockers on their website, mobilelocker.eu, or contact them by email to info@beachlocker.es.

EASYJET HUB FOR BARCELONA Although they have been flying into El Prat airport since 1996 it is only now that British carrier EasyJet is establishing an operations base. The new hub will create 120 new jobs bringing the company’s total payroll in the city to 250 personnel.
INCREASING EXPORTS Spanish exports maintain an upward trend in the first four months of 2015 with growth of 4.9%, 3.6 points higher than in the same period of last year (1.4%). Hence, exports amounted to 81.89 billion euros - the highest figure for the period January-April since records began (1971). The real change was slightly less, 4.4%, since export prices measured using Unit Value Indices (UVIs) grew by 0.5%.
GREEN IMPROVEMENT Research on primary school children in Barcelona suggests a boost in short-term memory from nearby vegetation, due in part to reduction in traffic pollution. Green spaces around city schools improve the mental development of young children, a study has found. The findings may partly be explained by reduced exposure to traffic pollution, experts believe. Other influences could include the psychological effect of having views of fields and trees rather than roads and buildings.

QUESADA BOWLS CLUB SPONSORED BY SPANISH LIFE PROPERTIES By Suzi Cooper Last Tuesday in the 20-20 Quesada played our neighbours Greenlands. We managed 14 points to 4. Home winners were:- Harry Johnston & Colin Highland 28-7, Mark France, Diane Riley, Lisa Bonsor & Pete Bonsor 18-7. Over at Greenlands we had a clean sweep. William Holtham 21-19, George Carnell & Dave Donovan 20-13, Kevin McKenna Nigel Baigent & Joe Riley 19-13, Brian Trinder, Linda Armstrong, Pearl Houghton & John Muldoon 23-11. On Wednesday in the Valencian Championship league the Lions were away to San Luis Falcons where they only managed 2 points thanks to Marianne Holtham, Dave Donovan, Pearl Houghton & Graham Phillips. No result received from the Tigers. On Thursday our Mens Pairs league team played a rearranged match against Greenlands. Unfortunately, they lost both matches & the overall by 8 shots. Friday saw the Lancasters playing a strong Monte Mar Toros. Wins from Liz Richardson, Pete Farrell & Phil Bevan, Mike Lamberton, Brian Trinder & John Northend netted 4 points. Meanwhile the Blenheims were away at San Luis again. This time a much better result. With 4 wins & a draw plus the overall they came away with 11 points. Winning teams – Chris Brazier, Lisa Bonsor & Bill Pain 18-16, Marianne Holtham, Pearl Houghton & Pete Bonsor 24-19, Mel Highland Diane Riley & Jack Martin 23-19, William Holtham, Derek Toozer & Jacqui Johnston 19-16 & gaining the draw Carol Broomfield, Nick Birch & Joe Riley. John Mulddon & Jacqui Johnston also progressed to the next round in the SABA mixed pairs. In last Saturdays chicken drive Stella Jakeman took home the meat voucher & Liz Richardson took the eggs. The chicken drives will continue on Saturday mornings. Starting at 9.30 – all players to check in by 9.15. Non members are welcome to join us subject to paying the required green fee.
The 2015 SABA Summer 3 Day trips competition was held at La Marina from the 20th to 22nd of June. The group winners were Alan Castle, Jan & Peter Parsons who dominated group ‘A’ winning all five game, Arthur Brown, Maggie Furness and Martin Foulcer who were unbeaten in Group ‘C’, Terry Perchard. Mike Smith, and Barbara Forshaw who won all but one game in Group ‘D’ but Group ‘B’ was the cliff hanger going down to the last end with three teams all on 6 points going into the last game but Tom Spencer, Kathy and Jim Manning managed to pull it off on the last end to qualify with a 4 shot advantage over Keith and June Jones and Colin Lindgren. Terry Perchard and Tom Spencer’s teams were too strong for Martin Foulcer’s and Alan Castle’s Teams respectively in the semi finals and this brought us to a final which was probably decided by a bowl played by Terry Perchard which would have been worthy of the title of bowl of the tournament. This converted a 3 shot down situation into a 1 shot up position where it did not look possible to do this. Well done Terry.

By Bobbie Sims SABA TRIPS COMPETITION 2015 This annual event took place at La Marina last weekend, and turned out to be a triumph for the club, after continuously playing strong opposition from many exceptional clubs, 3 of La Marina squads were due to play in the semi finals, our team of Janet and Peter Parsons and Alan Castle were just beaten, so it was a final between two of our teams, runners up after a hard game were Kathy and Jim Manning and Tom Spencer, but taking the title were Barbara Forshaw, Mike Smith and Terry Perchard. I'm sure everyone that entered enjoyed their games and on behalf of the club may I thank Arthur Brown for his tireless efforts organizing the event yet again. Another fine week of bowls confirms my belief that life is pretty good, a good session of bowls in great weather and wonderful company, where the result always comes secondary to the fun, I am always proud of our members’ attitude to sportsmanship and good fun. On Tuesday evening we played a strong team from San Luis in the Premier 20 and although the result was not great, we did play some good bowls and enjoyed the evening, taking just the singles at home and drawing the trips at San Luis. ROCKET’S GOLF SOCIETY ALTORREAL GOLF – 23rd JUNE 2015 It was a down to Murcia, Molinas de Segura to be precise and Altorreal Golf. There has bee a considerable amount of work being done on the course which it is now a venue that should be on the list to ‘must play’. A big “well done”, to the all the course staff at Altorreal. The competition was for the Organisers Trophy but there was a sharp intake of breath when it was announced that the format was Medal, but looking at the scores it did not deter some of the members, with really good playing conditions making a contribution, that coupled with wall to wall sunshine. To prove the point two players came in on Par. No stopping Rockets members. RESULTS: ORGANISER TROPHY WINNER: Graham Knight C/B from Ron Swift GOLD CATEGORY: 1ST Ron Swift 72 Nett, 2nd Ivie Davies 74 Nett, 3rd Seamus Martin 78 points SILVER CATEGORY: 1st Graham Knight 72 Nett, 2nd Geoff Wild 73 Nett, 3rd Ron Nicholson 77 Nett C/B NEAREST PIN: Hole 5: John Evans, 8: Ivie Davies, 17: John Evans LONGEST DRIVE: Rodney Smith The sheer pleasure on Graham Knights face was a delight as this was his first ever golf trophy win. So it was back to Izzy’s Bar for the celebrated munchies, thanks to Lynn, Jackie and Tony for their hospitality and of cause the presentations. Our next game on 14th July is at Vistabella Golf, please be there by 08:15. For a 09:00 first Tee. IN THE BUNKER WITH MICK THE GRIP
SIR NICK FALDO and Tom Watson will make their final Open appearances at St Andrews in July. Six time major champion Faldo plans to bid farewell on the famous Swilkin Bridge spanning the first and 18th fairways, after a career which included three British Opens, one at St. Andrews. He turns 58 on the Saturday of the Championship. On Wednesday 15th he and Watson will be joined by Tiger, Rory and Phil Mickelson in a four hole team event; the Champion Golfers' Challenge. St. Andrews has changed a bit over the years. In the 15th century it was one simple track hacked through the heather. In the 18th century the Old Course consisted of 22 holes, 11 out and 11 back, with golfers playing the same holes out and in, except for the 11th and 22nd. Four short holes were then changed to two long ones, reducing the number from 22 to 18, and establishing today’s standard round of golf. By the 19th century the course had become so popular that golfers playing out began to meet golfers playing in at the same hole, causing disputes and much angry waving of hickory clubs. Tom Morris solved the problem by creating double greens; two holes on each green, with white flags on the outward holes and red on the inward. RICKIE FOWLER silenced the critics who described him as “Overrated” when he played the last six holes at The Players Championship in 6 under par. In the playoff he birdied the island green 17th for the 3rd time that day. Tour players say that the reason so many golf balls hit the drink on the 137 yd. 17th, which would normally need no more than an 8 or 9 iron, is that the stands near the tee and the trees on the bank opposite cause a funnel effect, and as the ball climbs it is hit by a very strong swirling breeze. That’s their story anyway, it didn’t seem to bother Fowler.
DAVID LEADBETTER’S TIP which might help when facing a water hazard is to focus on a target high up behind where you want your ball to go. Seek out anything on the horizon, like a hill or a tree, and visualise your ball soaring towards it then dropping on to your intended target. Worth a try at La Serena, where on average a duck gets hit twice a week (and he’s getting very fed up with it.) IAN POULTER confesses to having a mania for tidiness. Apparently he rearranges everyone’s golf pencils to point in the same direction on the table after a game. In fact his fellow players leave them crooked just to watch him and laugh. He goes round straightening every ornament on his shelves, and insists all the labels on tins in his kitchen face the same way. No wonder his wife happily waves him off to golf. COLIN MONTGOMERIE successfully defended his Senior PGA Championship title in Indiana this month. He won by four shots; his third Seniors major triumph after the 2014 Senior PGA and US Open. He and Bernhard Langer have won four out of the last five Seniors Tour majors between them. Bernhard defended his Seniors Players Championship title last week with a six stroke victory at Belmont Country Club, his fifth major on the over 50 circuit. Monty used to be unpopular on the other side of the pond, but the Americans always love a winner, and he has mellowed with age, so they are actually getting quite fond of him. THE TROPHEE HASSAN Tournament in Agadir is staged on the private course at His Majesty’s palace, and apart from tournament week, the only people allowed on it are his personal friends. Just one fourball was played on the course last year. Is there something his friends aren’t telling him? Until next time: Happy Golfing. Contact Mick for all your regripping and repair requirements. 638 859 475.
LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY
HAPPY DAYS GOLF SOCIETY
By Mike Chapman We started the week with our popular Dusty Bin (3-2-1) game with 3 scores counting on the first hole, two on the second and one on the third and so on throughout the round. The clear winners with a very good score of 87 pts were Olga Douglas, Geoff Biggerstaff, Brian Townend and Mike Chapman who were 5 pts ahead of second placed team comprising Lindsay Forbes, Doug Wright, Ulrike Barth and 'Albert' on 82 pts. On Wednesday we played a Joker Stableford where each player selects one hole on the front and back nine to count for double points prior to the game. Conditions were glorious if a little warm and there were some very good scores being returned particularly from Lindsay Forbes who despite having a two shot penalty for playing the wrong ball and having to declare an unplayable when his ball got stuck up a tree in a birds nest came home with an incredible 46 pts. There will be one confused bird when it returns home. Surprisingly there were no 2's in the 2's Club this week so the money will rollover to our next home game on 8 July. The top three in each Category were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Lindsay Forbes 46 pts 2nd Bryan Neal 44 pts 3rd Jose Maria Buendia 41 pts Cat 2. 1st Mike Chapman 42 pts 2nd Rod Doel 41 pts (c/b) 3rd Joyce McClusky 41 pts On Friday one of the semi-final matches in our Singles Match Play knock out competition was played which saw Geoff Biggerstaff book his place in the final beating competition favourite Lindsay Forbes 4&2. The remaining members played a Best 2 of 4 with all scores counting on the Par 3's. The winners were Annemarie Weisheit, Maria Oldenziel, Barry Holtham and 'Albert' with 98 pts. In second place were Heinz Lei, Hendrick Oldenziel, Marleen Billen and 'Albert' with 97 pts.
By Lubbertus This week’s outing saw the society at El Valle Golf course. On what turned out to be a very hot day, the courses desert themes set a perfect counterbalance to the intense heat. The course encourages accuracy, rather than power, encouraging the intelligent player to focus on his short skills. And this showed in the results. Nearest the pin winner at hole 6 was a new name to the scoreboard, that of Yvonne Heysselberg. The rest of the nearest the pin list was made up of the old stalwarts, Kevin Wenn at the 9th, John McGregor at the 12th and Simon Sharples at the 15th. The overall winners proved that Al Valle certainly lives up to its reputation as an accurate and intelligent course as no fewer than five people shared the top three places with just 2 points separating them. Joint 3rd place was shared between three players all on 37 points each; namely Kedrick Rhodes, another old stalwart, sharing that honour with two more new names to the score card, that of Lena Olesen and Les Christie. In second place, but only on count back was Dale Wood with 39 points. But most impressive of all was that Yvonne Heysselberg was the overall winner also with 39 points. This was doubly impressive considering this was the first time her name appeared on the score card, and then to be winner and nearest the pin on the one day. Wow is the only way to describe that achievement. The society is as much a social group as a golf society. To join the Society, or if you just want to learn a little more about them and what they do then contact Steve, or any member of the staff at the societies “19th hole” at the Marinasol Restaurant, Cabo Roig and they would be very happy to talk to you. The Happy Days Golf Society’s next competition is on 7th July at La Serena Golf course, so please contact Steve for details.

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Around and About the courses - LO ROMERO ’ The course is one of the most ‘natural’ of the courses in the region using the existing terrain which produces holes with a variety of doglegs and steady changes in elevation and was opened in January 2008. The signature hole on the course is the 18th hole with the ‘island’ green simlar to TPC Sawgrass in the USA and home of the 5th major but all of the other holes offer their own unique challenges. The clubhouse is temporary in nature and is in the style of two wooden log cabins and therefore the changing toilet and shower facilities are somewhat limited. There is a café in the main building which offers reasonably priced food and beverage served by ‘cheery’ staff and the adequately stocked pro-shop is contained in a separate wooden building. If you are a visitor or a resident to this area then you simply must play this course which offers excellent value for money for the standard of the course and while the 18th hole takes all the attention when you play this course you will quickly become aware that the other holes are designed to catch you out if you try and take them too lightly. The water hazards are well placed to catch any errant shots and you will be surprised at just how ‘tight’ some of the tee shots with a driver can ‘feel’.The front nine holes are gentle and follow the former plantation land while the back nine are played through the natural pine forest. For the better standard of golfer you will be impressed by the surface of the greens which roll well but more importantly ‘takes’ a good iron shot without damaging the surface. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. SAN MIGUEL GOLF SOCIETY AT LA FINCA - Eclectic 4th Round Thirty-nine members and 5 guests attended SMGS’s monthly visit to La Finca to play a stableford competition and, for members only, the 4th and penultimate round of this season’s Eclectic competition. The course was in superb condition and fully recovered from last month’s scarifying and hollow tining. Although a little windy, again against (as it always seems to be) on the stroke index 18 12th hole which makes it one of the most difficult “easiest holes” we play, as evidenced by it being one of the poorer scored holes within the eclectic competition, conditions were excellent for high scoring. Whilst those in Gold averaged highly, it seems those in the Bronze and Silver categories had something of an off-day with the exceptions of Karen Simpson in Bronze (40 points) and Silver’s Mike Jordan, who had the day’s highest score of 43. Perhaps there was something of a golfing hangover for many from the previous weekend’s away trip to Almerimar. Two doubles matches were held in this year’s SMGS match play competition, with Ivan Hanak and Steve Davis (Dumpers) beating last year’s finalists Les Wilton and Ian Parkinson (Ayoops) 5 and 4, and Darren Hancock and John Osborne (the Wizard and Oz – probably the best and most inventive name for this year’s teams) beating much fancied Scottish duo, with their own rather splendid name of Big Mac and Chips, Alan MacDonald and John Aitchison 1 up. The winners will now play each other in the second semi-final to find out who will meet current Captain Phil de Lacy and partner and former Captain Ken Flaherty in the final. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Les Wilton (26), 3rd John Trehy (29), 2nd Ray Ewins (32), and 1st, with an excellent score, the 2nd best of the day, Karen Simpson with 40 points. Silver Category: 4th Ken Flaherty (31 on CB), 3rd Steve Davis (31 on CB), 2nd Colin Rust (32) and 1st, principally thanks to finally being able to putt after months of trying, Mike Jordan with a superb 43 pts.
Gold Category: 4th Kevin Reeson (36 on CB), 3rd Ivan Hanak (36 0n CB), 2nd Barry Roehrig (36 on CB), and just sneaking ahead of these three, theo Boelhouwer with 37 points. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Steve Davis (3 and 13), Darren Hancock (6, who must like this hole as he achieved the same here last month), and Simon Stephens (16). The Abacus was won by somebody often at the other end of the prizes, Chris Hamblett. Two best guest prizes today, with David Johnston finishing runner-up to a high scoring Simon Stephens, who came in with 39 points. Our thanks go to the staff at La Finca golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next week we will be at Villamartin.
EUROGOLF SOCIETY - Thursday 25 June 2015 On a hot and sultry day, the Eurogolf Society competition this week was a team game of Waltz, at our home course La Marquesa. A warm & sunny day greeted 40 players at Saurines de La Torre (IRM Course) on Tuesday. Nearly all players opting for a buggy. A breeze did pick up which gave the players some much needed respite from the heat. Opting this month for a Team game & Individual Stableford format. chosing a ´best 2 scores ´option. As the results show, some good scores were recorded. John, scoring a massive 42 points as winner of Division 3. Our handicap secretary will have his scissors out this month! Course in good condition but greens recently hollow tined and this made putting difficult. The Pro Shop now positioned in the Bar and is a long way from first tee , so not entirely user friendly as quite a way from where the buggies are kept, so players having walk back and forth to pick up keys, collect/ return buggies and return keys. However, general consensus was that it was a very enjoyable & social day. Presentations of the prizes were held back at Franc y Louise Bar in Sucina. PIE AND PEAS OFF THE MENU FOR REAL SOCIEDAD PIE AND PEAS are off the menu for players of La Liga outfit Real Sociedad - despite boss David Moyes initially pencilling in a pre-season friendly fixture against his former club Preston North End. And instead of tasting Lancashire delicacies such as pie and mushy peas - Real Sociedad players will have to do with a Chinese takeaway! Newly promoted Championship side Preston North End are looking to add another friendly to their pre-season schedule at Deepdale in July - with Real Sociedad now heading to China for a tour. Moyes, who still owns a multi-million pound Mansion in Hoghton, Preston, Lancashire, was in charge at Deepdale during 1998-2002. Moyes moved to Preston in 1993, from Scottish club Hamilton Academical, and became player manager at The Lilywhites, making 143 appearances for the club. In the 1998-99 season Moyes guided Preston to the second division title. And in 2001
Moyes took Preston to the Championship play off final losing 3–0 against Bolton thwarting him of Premier League status. Despite Moyes signing a new five-year contract with the club he left Deepdale in a move to Everton in 2002. Moyes was appointed Manchester United manager in 2013 - replacing Sir Alex Ferguson. Moyes moved to Real Sociedad last November, after his Old Trafford exit, joining the Basque club, six months after his ill-fated reign at United. Moyes has retained close-roots with his beloved Preston North End, and was at Wembley Stadium to watch The Lilywhites' in the League One play-off final 4-0 win against Swindon Town in May. "I had plenty of opportunities before I went to Spain to stay in England, and I had made a decision that I would go and work in Spain," said Moyes. Moyes, 52, added: "I wanted to try something different, wanted to try new culture, work
TORREVIEJA’S EVA GUERRERO CHAMPION OF SPAIN Torrevieja’s Eva Guerrero has added yet another title to those already under her belt during the 2015 tennis season, the National Cadete Championship, which she won in Alicante last weekend. Already ranked in the world’s top 50 within the Under 18 age group, after a slow start, Eva beat Castellon’s Noelua Bouzo in three sets, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Earlier in the day she had already picked up the doubles title along with her partner Paula Arias. Just two weeks ago Eva made her Junior debut at the Roland Garros in Paris where, despite going out in the first round, she picked up her first seven WTA Ranking points.

In third spot was Andy Foden with 1 Carp of 2.68kg and in 4th was Eddie Badcock with1.58kg. The next match on the 2nd July will be Round 6 and will be fished at the Embalse del Ojos in Blanca. Pegs at 8.00am and fishing 9.00 till 2.00. Please note this is different to what I said at the last meeting. I have been informed that there have been quite a few fish caught on the stretch in between Rojales and Guardamar in the range of 400 to 600gram with some quite a lot bigger. If only they would cut the bank between Rojales and Guardamar, things should improve immensely for all of us. The next Quiz night is on Tuesday 30th June commencing at 7.30pm. Teams of 6 or less can take part and the cost of entry is 1€ per person. So come along and have a fun evening. Our next Sunday meeting will be on July 5th, with the Committee meeting at 10.30 followed by the General Meeting at 11.00am. The Clubs home is the Bar El Alto La Dolores which is just off the N332 between Guardamar and La Mata., near the Repsol garage.
