DESALINATION NOW A PRIORITY

With the ongoing controversy surrounding many of the desalination plants in Valencia the new Provincial Government has said that it will look urgently at the possibility of introducing a general plan that will encourage farmers to once again look

at the possibility of using desalinated water to irrigate their plants and their crops. Currently the high price and low quality of desalinated water makes farmers reluctant to use it on their fields so the main emphasis will be placed by the government both to reduce water costs and increase production. The Generalitat says that it wants to look toward introducing "realistic, reasonable and implementable" solutions. New Community President Ximo Puig said, "We must optimize and use these resources much better than is currently the case and we must do so as soon as possible. The costs must almost certainly be reduced, because these are investments that we are making in our future, so we have to ensure that they are very effective. Water is forever.” There are many areas in the Community that are not being used by farmers to cultivate any crops but which could be used if water was more available and better priced. Currently farmers are reluctant to revive many of these fields because the only water available is from desalination plants and priced beyond their means. To try to revive their use, late last year the Consell tried to include these desalination plants into the National Water System which is driven by the central government and which seeks to bring together all the country's water resources. What that would do is to redistribute the high production costs of desalinated water throughout the whole nation with the inevitable result that

Monday, 6th July, 2015 the price of desalinated water would fall making it more affordable to farmers than is presently the case. Currently one such affected desalination plant is in Torrevieja where the infrastructure of the 300 million euro project remains in test mode. Built with the goal of complementing the supply of irrigation to the Tajo-Segura (8,000 hectares) in periods of scarcity it will eventually have the capacity to serve a population of 440,000 people. However the infrastructure is still undergoing testing, eleven years on, and will not begin to produce desalinated water until early next year, when it will operate at half capacity producing just 80 cubic hectometres per year. Facing higher demands and lower reserves for all water users, and with farmers across the area facing increasingly difficult times, the need for reduced water and production costs are clear, but even if the Generalitat does manage to convince the government to include desalinated water into the National Water System it is unlikely that the Torrevieja plant could satisfy the demand on the coast, as it doesn’t yet have sufficient electrical power.

COMMENDATIONS FOR SAN FULGENCIO POLICE OFFICERS

Last Thursday the San Fulgencio mayor, Carlos Ramirez, presented commendations to three of his officers, agents A113, A-142 and A-146. Four weeks ago the trio had foiled an armed robbery at Bar Maya’s in the town, arresting one

individual, seizing a weapon and the vehicle he was driving. During the same presentation the mayor also awarded a Certificate of Long and Meritorious Service to the Chief of the Policia Local on the occasion of 25 years of service to the force.

HAH STILL ROCKING IN RODA AFTER FIVE YEARS

AFA TORREVIEJA RECEIVE DONATION FROM RAWHIDERS MOTOR CYCLE CLUB For the third year running the Costa Blanca Rawhiders motor cycle club have donated money to Torrevieja's Alzheimer charity AFA. They rode into town a week ago and handed €583 to AFA President Mathilde Sanchez, who thanked them again for their generosity and welcomed their offer to raise further funds for the charity. Mathilde also expressed her concern over funding for the Association in view of the recent local change in political power; donations such as this being particularly important unless future funding is guaranteed. After coffee and a tour of the AFA premises near the former railway station the group asked Mathilde if she wanted a ride on one of their powerful motor cycles, she declined, but instead offered to pose on one of them. Photos show Mathilde enjoying the moment and Mathilde, Jennie Mutter and Ann Bissett, AFA volunteers, receiving the money from the Rawhiders.

The sun shone, the volunteers shone, and the stars shone at this year’s Rocking in Roda party. 344 people came along to enjoy the sunshine, and the atmosphere at this very popular SELL OUT event. Compered throughout by the very entertaining ANDY DOVE the show started with KENNY superb as ever on his guitar. Along came VINNIE MACK who soon had everyone swinging, a brilliant singer. Ladies taken care of, now the fabulous VANESSA (Vermeij) who wowed the audience with her amazing performance. Half time, the raffle, 27 prize vouchers, all gifts donated by our local businesses, too numerous to mention, was drawn in 20 minutes! Many thanks for your generosity and support. THE NORTHERNERS (formerly Countryfyde) were next, where ANDY and ROB FRASER did a fantastic job, great music for dancing and singing along to. They had a surprise in store when they introduced Shannon and Molly Moran, The Chippettes who the crowd adored, stars in the making here!

Then, the ever popular SUZYG with Rhianne. What energy this pocket dynamo has. . The guys loved the outfits, and the ladies loved singing and dancing along with you. 5th time SUZYG, many thanks for your support, you are a star. To finish, one of the best bands around, the fantastic STREETERS, magic music, wow, what great talent, and they ROCKED RODA until the evening ended. HAH founder and organiser Lesley said” special thanks to all our fantastic HAH volunteers especially, Jackie S, Carole & Norman, and Angela cakes) Joy and Tom, food, and all the others who work so hard in so many ways to help the community, all the entertainers for their excellent performances, Joy Tom for their catering, Dasi for the ice cream vamn, Ruben and his staff for helping so much with the loan of tables, chairs, and great bar service, and everyone for coming. After expenses, and including raffle, cakes tickets, a whopping 2812.50€ was raised for HAH. Thanks everybody”

LET’S GET THINGS GOING ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA If you find a problem that you would like the Orihuela Costa authorities to deal with you must first of all make sure that they know about it. You can do this by taking a photo of the offending item or issue and sending it, with a short explanation, to the email address:

THE MAN WITH TIME ON HIS HANDS

Javier Galindo is the National Timekeeper You quite probably didn’t notice it but when you woke up last Wednesday morning a second had been added to your timepiece...the reason.....the Earth's rotation is slowing down ... though not that much, so no need to panic. Just enough to require us to add a leap second every now and then. The reason is that a day lasts 86,400 seconds. ... but the mean solar day – the average length of a day, based on how long it takes Earth to rotate – is about 86,400.002 seconds. That's because Earth's rotation is gradually slowing down ever so slightly, due to a kind of braking force caused by the gravitational tug of a battle between Earth, the moon and the sun. Over time, those milliseconds add up until they amount to an extra second. If the Earth rotated at the same speed every day, there'd be about one extra second a year. But it doesn't. Stormy weather, activity in the planet's inner core, and many other geologic and atmospheric factors all come together to occasionally muck up the .002 of an extra second a normal day has. Here in Spain the man responsible for adding that second to our clocks is Javier Galindo, a Captain in the Spanish Navy, and Jefe de la Hora del Real Observatorio de la Armada in San Fernando, Cadiz, where, effectively, he is the National timekeeper. Captain Francisco Javier Galindo Mendoza heads up a team of ten people who, in turn, are responsible for the maintenance and adjustment of the National Atomic clock. They also take care of a display featuring the first watches that were used to

control legal time in Spain. But the timepieces that really matter are situated in a room next door. Half a dozen atomic clocks, the most accurate timepieces in Spain and those that record the legal time. “We added a second to re-establish parity with the solar day" said Galindo. " And as such, 1st July was an exceptionally busy day, with a duration of 86,401 seconds instead of the standard 86,400 seconds." However, the need to introduce leap seconds has been challenged in recent years by the increasing cost and the possibility of it causing failures in some computer systems. So this could be the last time that such a change is made, since the international community is currently debating the abolition of the leap second. The decision will be made in October at an international conference in Geneva, where discussions first began in 2012 at the Radio Communication Assembly. The International Telecommunication Union, the UN agency which oversees the maintenance or abolition of leap seconds, has proposed an alternative. Instead of making this adjustment every few years, they say that every 600 years they could add an hour. There are potential issues with abandoning the leap second. Human beings have always lived by sunrise and sunset; our biology responds to rising and fading light levels. Without leap seconds, or some other adjustment of time, noon in the year 4000 will occur in total darkness, but personally, I for one don’t really care!

ORIHUELA DEBT Now that he has had time to take in the situation following his recent election, the new mayor of Orihuela Emilia Bascunana has revealed that the city has debts amounting to 63 million euro. His financial summary suggests that the situation could of course be much better but the debt is certainly manageable and the city is far from being bankrupt. He said that his job now is to reduce the deficit without there being any noticeable reduction in town hall services.

KING IN MEXICO King Philipe was awarded the “keys to Mexico City” during the Royal’s first state visit to a Latin American country last week. The main aim of the trip was to promote economic ties between the two nations – Spanish investment in its former colony exceeds 49 billion dollars. King Philipe and Queen Letizia were guests at a formal dinner after the ceremony. There are currently more than 5,000 Spanish companies investing in Mexico.

SPANISH SPEAKERS The United States is now the world’s second largest Spanishspeaking country after Mexico, according to a new study published by the prestigious Instituto Cervantes. The report says there are 41 million native Spanish speakers in the US plus a further 11.6 million who are bilingual, mainly the children of Spanishspeaking immigrants. This puts the US ahead of Colombia (48 million) and Spain (46 million) and second only to Mexico (121 million).

NO EARLY ELECTIONS Spanish Prime Minster Mariano Rajoy reiterated his position that he will not call for early general elections, scheduled for next autumn. He told journalists that he would not ratify early elections, which means that general elections would be held on schedule, either in late next November or early December.

ORIHUELA COSTA THE WAY IN BLUE The new mayor and two of his councillors paid a visit to La Glea Beach in Campoamor last Tuesday where they carried out the symbolic act of raising one of the the recently awarded Blue Flags. In all there have been a total of 10 Blue Flags and 5 ‘Q’ Quality Tourism Flags awarded to Orihuela Costa Beaches this year which once again can boast the highest concentration of Blue Flag beaches on the Mediterranean coast, as well as the highest number of “Q” for quality flags in Valencia. All of the beaches have seen a great deal of work carried out on them during the winter months and many are now equipped with brand new wooden walkways, foot showers, toilets and much improved chirunguito bars. There is also the additional availability of free internet and secure beach lockers on some of the playas which can you be rented by the public as a small extra charge. Although the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, has been quite busy since his inauguration the ceremony was the first official act carried out on the Orihuela Costa by the Councillors for Tourism and the Environment, Sofia Alvarez and Miguel Angel Fernandez respectively. Of course Ms Alvarez has also been appointed

the Councillor for the coast and for International residents so we will expect to see much more of her during the coming weeks as she meets and greets many local groups and personalities. The Orihuela Costa beaches receiving the blue flag awards are Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca, Cala Bosque (La Zenia), La Caleta, Cala Capitan, Aquamarina, Barranco Rubio and La Glea addition to the Marinas at Cabo Roig and Yacht Club de Campoamor. In the Community of Valencia the nearest challengers to Orihuela are Valencia and Cullera with 6 blue flags each and Alcala de Xivert, Benicassim, Elche and Torrevieja with five each. In terms of concentration The beaches in receipt of the 'Q' for Quality award from the Institute for Quality Tourism in Spain are Punta Prima, Cala Estaca, Cala Capitan, Mil Palmeras and La Glea. These awards recognise clean water monitoring to ensure the safety of bathers, sanitation, recreational areas and recreational facilities, as well as the environmental protection measures. With a total 0f 678, including 101 for Marinas, Spain has more Blue Flag awards than any other country worldwide.

COST A BLANCA TOURISM SET TO BENEFIT The improvements already seen in the number of inbound tourists this year could well improve further following the tragic developments during recent days in the Middle East and Tunisia as well as the current instability in Greece. These points and more were made last Tuesday to over 200 leisure industry and hotel workers by Antoni Mayor the President of Hosbec, the organisation that represents hoteliers on the Costa Blanca. Snr Mayor was closing the one day conference held at the Hotel Levante Club de Benidorm. “The landscape of the Spanish Tourist Industry could well change overnight” he said, “with data already showing a drop in Greek tourism of 53% and the virtual disappearance of tourist operations in Tunisia and other countries that are currently on alert for fundamentalist attacks.”

He said that he fully expects tourism in Valencia to strengthen, not only in volume but also in profitability, because the rise in demand will create a much more buoyant market. Currently there are more than 20,000 hotel beds on the Costa Blanca that are vacant and pending sales for July and August but these are all expected to go with last minute bookings. Other presentations made at last Tuesday’s conference included Josep Ivars, a professor at the University of Alicante, who spoke on intelligent tourist destinations, Jimmy Pons, Director of ‘Innovation Rumbo’, the commercial

director of the Marsh Group, Sergio Gomez, and the Director of the Alicante Airport, Santiago Martínez-Cava who addressed the audience on good marketing in a global and highly technological economy. Professor Jose Nácher, and Alfredo Bataller, CEO of the Sha Wellness Clinic in L'Alfas del Pi also participated.

WHERE there's muck there's money - a fine! By ANDREW ATKINSON WHERE there's muck - there's money - so the saying goes. But in this case a FINE! And in Spain there is a 'bin' time protocol that can cash-in on those that do not abide by the law - when discarding their rubbish! Believe it or not during the summer months in Spain legislation states that you can't deposit your waste into the rubbish bins until night-time.

ly garden and the staff are so helpful and friendly, Lory is an angel!!! Cannot recommend this bar highly enough for the food and excellent service. “Worth a visit” This is a very nice little Italian place where you always feel welcome when you come, are well taken care of while there and feel satisfied when you leave. They do breakfast, lunch and dinner and everything I´ve had so far has tasted amazing. “Best Home Food Restaurant” Family run restaurant, really nice with a superb service. It offers a variety of cuisines ranging from finger food to traditional cuisine. There are homemade and everything tastes fresh and juicy. So if you want to escape and unwind look no further than L&A Familia – La Florida for a perfect Summer evening. CALL 966 841 835 to reserve your table and let L&A Familia do the rest for you.

Many Municipal street rubbish bins carry 'timetables' as to when you can and cannot - discard your rubbish. After 9pm. Crazy? Well, not really, when you take into account the high summer temperatures, that can bring concerns with rubbish. Disposed food waste can cause a stink - literally - if you are caught by the authorities dumping your waste outside the scheduled hours. Rats, stray cats, other animals and insects, along with maggots, can lead to public health issues - not to mention the dank smell - when temperatures soar, as is the case right now! So, check the rubbish timetables, between 9pm-11pm, in certain areas, with the rubbish waste being collected overnight.

RIGHT OF DEMO A reform of Spaniards’ right to demonstrate has brought condemnation that it will stifle freedom of speech and assembly, and allow police to fine ‘offenders’ without a trial. The Spanish Citizens’ Security Law under the Penal Code came into force on 1st July. It was passed in parliament last December despite all groups except for the ruling conservative PP (Partido Popular) voting against the legislation. The right of immigrants to apply for asylum is also curtailed under the reform.

ARISTOCRAT EXHUMED The remains of a member of a leading Spanish family are to be exhumed to establish whether a Madrid housewife is his illegitimate daughter and therefore entitled to a a share of his estate. It is alleged that José Leoncio Gonzalez de Gregorio y Martí, who died in 2008, fathered the child during a relationship with an underage servant. A Spanish judge has ordered the body to be exhumed following a claim for a share of his estate by Rosario Bermudo Muñoz, 65, who says she is the Duke’s illegitimate daughter.

MORE DISRUPTION EXPECTED FOR JULY HOLIDAY FLIGHTS Spanish Air Traffic Controllers say that they are determined to have more impact on flights into and out of Spain when they next go on strike this coming weekend. They say that last month’s 4 day partial stoppages failed to put any real pressure on Air Traffic Operator ENAIRE so, if their demands are to be taken seriously, they hope that action planned over the two weekend 11/12 and 25/26 July will have more of an effect. But once again the stoppages will only be partial, from 10am – 1pm on the two Saturdays and from 5pm – 8pm on each of the Sundays. Susana Romero, spokesperson for the Union USCA, said that pressure will be applied to flight operations and in view of the fact that they will take place on busy weekends during the holiday season they should cause rather more disruption this time round.

Last month the public air traffic operator ENAIRE and Spain’s Ministry of Public Works failed to respond to controllers’ demands The USCA trade union is still insisting that sanctions be withdrawn for 61 Barcelona air traffic controllers and that another controller, Marco Antonio Enríquez, based in Santiago de Compostela (Galicia), is reinstated. The complaints are related to the turmoil caused around Christmas 2010, when management failed to allocate the appropriate number of controllers leading to massive bank holiday delays, the declaration of a state of alert and the militarisation of the Spanish air traffic control network. Romero said that there has been a lack of willingness to negotiate, despite statements made by Ana Pastor, the Minister of Public Works, so the strikes will go ahead.

Spokesperson for the Union USCA, Susana Romero, says that on this occasion the disruption will extend to holiday flights

TORREVIEJA PROTEST AT TERRORISM DEATHS Staff from Torrevieja Town Hall observed 3 minutes silence on Monday in mourning and in protest of the four simultaneous terrorist attacks which took place on the previous Friday. They included the deaths of 33 holidaymakers from the UK and Ireland in Sousse, Tunisia as well as the atrocities in, Kuwait, France and Somalia which killed numerous other civilians. Those in the photo include the present and the former mayors.

TRAGIC ACCIDENT OF 14 FLOOR DROP A 18 year old girl died after falling 14 floors in Gandia last week. She was one of five friends who were spending a week in the holiday resort in search of sea, sand and fun. The National Police have now launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. Identified as Maria Lamadridit, its thought that the 18 year old was returning at about 8am from a night out with a friend. After failing to gain entry to the flat by knocking on the front door she then tried to climb down from the communal terrace to access the apartment balcony. The concierge of the building Infante, one of the highest in the first line of the beach, who had been talking to her moments earlier, said that she seemed perfectly lucid, certainly not drunk, and had simply lost her footing and fallen to her death.

THE ENCHANTING EXPERIENCE OF CASA MORISCA f you haven’t yet paid a visit to the Carmen del Campillo, the “Casa Morisca" Moroccan Tea gardens just off the N340, to the southwest of Crevillente, then you really do have a treat in store. Described as a ‘Mini Alhambra’ this is one place that adults really must take in during their trip to Spain. Beautiful gardens, so many little nooks and crannies, so many things to see. If you are a resident in this part of Spain the gardens are an experience like no other and one that you will certainly go back to time and time again. At a guess, the gardens cover an area of a couple of acres, around which a leisurely stroll, with a break for ‘must take’ photographs, tea and treats, will take you a couple of hours. It is a little strange when you first arrive at the gates as you will usually have to wait for someone to let you in, but the owners and staff are very welcoming as you are essentially guests in their wonderful home. You are left completely to your own devices and you can roam around the gardens and it’s buildings entirely at your own pace. There is always someone around to help and if you want to take refreshment, at a very reasonable cost, there is a large selection of different teas and tasty snacks and cakes, but you

I

can also choose soft drinks, coffee or very good orange juice At dusk the gardens are lit by Moroccan glass lights and the peacocks call and fly between the buildings. There are many unique rooms to discover and explore, each new one makes it difficult to choose where to have your tea and mini Moroccan treats. The whole experience is truly enchanting. A real hidden gem but not too far away from the tourist packed coastline. A true labour of love where you go to chill out on a balmy summer's evening, to bathe in the wonderful heady scent of jasmine, whilst sipping equally aromatic tea and indulging in some fine Moroccan sweets. Costs might be difficult to work out as entry and menu prices are not displayed, but for a group of four you would expect to pay about 25 euro for drinks and entrance. There is a downside however, it is not too easy to find and it might well take some research to ensure that you don’t have a wasted journey. Last year it was a right turn off the N340 road heading from Crevillente to Albatera at the Cespa Petrol Station. Alternatively of course you could find someone who has been before and ask them to take you along.

Royal British Legion Event At Alfaz del Pi

SPANISH AUTHORS AND WORLD LITERATURE Don Quixote, is perhaps the best known Spanish book with Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616), who wrote it, perhaps the best known Spanish writer abroad. Published during the socalled ‘Golden Age’ of Spanish Literature (sixteenth and seventeenth century), it is one of the most translated books in history. The Golden Age, beginning with the publication of Antonio de Nebrija’s Spanish Grammar’ (1492) and ending with the death of Pedro Calderón de la Barca (1681), also witnessed the release of The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes, and of his Fortunes and Adversities (anonymous, 1554), founding the genre of the picaresque novel and mirroring the Castilian Spanish vernacular of the Renaissance. A little earlier, in 1499, Fernando de Rojas published La Celestina, or Tragicomedy of

Calisto and Melibea. A blend of novel and play, this work marks the end of Medieval literature and the beginning of the Renaissance in Spanish. It has been extremely popular since it was first published, having been read and staged by generations in Spain Latin America. In fact, we owe to Fernando de Rojas the archetype of the procuress, precisely called ‘celestina’ in Spanish after the unforgettable character in his work. Playwrights Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca revolutionised the Spanish theatrical scene in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Prolific and skilled, they wrote lots of plays, some – like Fuenteovejuna or La vida es sueño (Life Is a Dream) – still much staged in the Spanishspeaking world and beyond. Francisco de Quevedo also wrote a picaresque novel, Historia de la vida del Buscón llamado don Pablos (The Life of Paul the Scavenger), as well as some of the finest

metaphysical poetry and political satire. His arch-rival in literature, Luis de Góngora, author of the Fable of Polyphemus and Galatea, is the other major representative of the Spanish Baroque, whose influence can be felt in modern poets like the members of the so-called ‘Generation of 1927’. Nineteenth-century Romanticism is best illustrated by Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, whose Rhymes and Legends influenced late nineteenth-century writers like Juan Ramón Jiménez. A member of the ‘Generation of 1989’, the author of Platero and I (the popular novel about a little donkey), was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1956. The writers in the Generation of 1927 included Federico García Lorca, whose romances – Romancero Gitano (Gypsy Ballads) – and plays – Blood Wedding, Yerma, Bernarda Alba – are among the finest literary creations in Spanish. http://marcaespana.es/en/

MORE MOBILE RADAR LOCATIONS TO BE PUBLISHED

ROAD FATALITIES DECLINE IN FIRST SEMESTER With still a long way to go on the road to zero, fatalities on the roads of Spain declined in the first six months of the year, with 11 fewer deaths than 2014. Tragically, 496 people still lost their lives in the first semester, after an increase last year bucked the trend of thirteen consecutive years of decline. The Director General of the DGT, María Seguí, said this week, “We are at historic lows and now we have to be extremely vigilant. These results place us among the best countries in the world”. Specifically, this year began with two consecutive months of rising deaths on Spanish roads, increasing by 44% in January and 14.5% in February, according to provisional figures provided by the DGT, which accounts for the deaths recorded in the 24 hours after an incident on the intercity roads throughout the country, except Catalonia and the Basque Country. In the first quarter of the year, the death toll showed an increase for the first time since 2002, although in March we saw a decline with 80 deaths, compared to 90 in 2014. The average age of cars involved in fatal incidents in 2015 is 13.6

years, whereas in 2014 the average age was 12.3 years. The age of a vehicle is statistically linked to the risk of death as studies show that the risk of death in passenger cars aged between 10 to 14 years old is 1.6 times higher than those of less than four years; and 2.2 times higher in those aged 15 to 19 years. Spain currently has a rate of 36 deaths per million inhabitants, one of the lowest in the world, but still not low enough. In an attempt to slow vehicles down, from Thursday, the DGT will publish 1,500 locations of mobile radars on the roads, in the hope that the awareness of such speed checking devices will encourage drivers to slow down. Shortly, the laws will change giving more attention to the most vulnerable road users and general maximum speed limits on some roads will reduce as a result. Slowing vehicles down and focussing on the two other main factors in road traffic incidents, alcohol and drugs and distractions, should go further to the road to zero and make the roads safer for all.

Following the success of the pilot scheme launched in Asturias and Castile y Leon, the DGT has announced that from July they will expand the publication of the location of mobile speed detectors on the roads. Specifically, from July, the DGT will publish the periodic locations of 1,200 sections of roads, divided into 50 provinces, detailing the approximate location at any point of any of their 800 mobile radar units. The initiative was announced in February as part of a package of improvements to help manage excessive speed on the roads, by advising drivers of the approximate location so as they may slow down for a longer period than if they only spot the radars at the last moment, thus resulting in a safer flow of traffic for longer periods of time. According to the head of the DGT, María Seguí, “The criteria for locating these radars are the result of applying a method developed and tested in seven provinces and takes into account four parameter; the number of serious incidents, the overall number of incidents irrespective of severity, the information relating to the speed of the road and the road characteristics”.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

GOOD BANK BAD BANK Banks have not had a good press in recent years, and their misdeeds have caught up with many of these seemingly impervious institutions, both in the UK, as well as in Spain. On a local level, I read a rather sad news item last week about a bank manager working in a small town in Gran Canaria who was caught fiddling the books and extracted around 15,000 euros from other people's accounts. Fortunately, he was caught before he inflicted too much damage on more of his customers and the bank, but it serves to remind us all that there are rotten apples in all walks of life and in all countries. This news story coincided with an article about banking in Spain, written by an expat, which made me wonder which country I was living in, since I certainly didn't recognise it. The article proclaimed that Spanish banks were amazing, superb institutions of fidelity, honesty and helpfulness with zero corruption, as opposed to British banks, which were all corrupt, staffed by machines and assisted by hardened crooks as counter staff, although I exaggerate slightly here. The writer seemed to be totally overwhelmed that the bank staff in her branch were always the same people, knew her by name, indeed well enough to be greeted with a kiss and coffee whenever she visited the bank, as well as being on close dinner party terms with the bank manager. I began to wonder whether it was a bar or a bank that the writer was talking about. Alarm bells rang and a vision of the corrupt bank manager working in the small town in Gran Canaria sprang to mind. I use two banks regularly in Spain, and thankfully, I have no such relationship with my bank manager, nor am I ever greeted with a good morning kiss and coffee. I do not know if the bank manager is a man

or a woman, their name, or whether the branch has a manager at all; it really doesn't matter to me. The staff are continually changing, and although they are polite, it is rare that any work in the same branch for more than a few months. No, it is not kisses, coffee or dinner parties that I require from my bank, but a helpful, reliable service that meets my day-to-day needs. I like to use technology, so expect to be given reliable, online banking, together with an app for my iPhone to allow me to check and make transactions whenever I wish. I expect cash machines to work whenever I want one, and that there will be someone to assist me in person when I need help. I am more than happy to use telephone banking, and particularly if they can assist me in English. Yes, whilst I can deal with my bank quite happily in Spanish, I prefer to use my own language in health, legal and financial matters. As for the British bank dimension, I certainly did not recognise that description either, since I have always found my British bank branch to be helpful, despite recently posting two cheques to the UK that were lost in the system. I had assumed that it was the fault of the Spanish postal service, but one cheque did eventually turn up at a credit card centre in London, which was a little surprising, since I had posted it to Newcastle. My only complaint is with the bank's telephone banking service, since I can rarely speak to anyone in their call centre who speaks anything but Punjabi, but that may be my hearing. However, in the bank's defence, my letter of complaint relating to the missing cheque met with a prompt and considered response, together with a nice credit, which paid for dinner out to compensate me for my trouble. So, wherever we live in the World, I suspect that we will find both good and bad banks, with good and bad staff, good and bad systems, and those whose managers give kisses and coffee and throw dinner parties, and those who do not. As with many expats, I am enthusiastic about my life in Spain and the Canary Islands. However, it is impor-

tant to retain a balanced approach to our new lives, and not see everything in the expat garden through rose tinted wine glasses. It is also important to accept that because we have moved countries, life is suddenly not going to be wonderful in every way. Certainly, that is not my experience, and life continues to be one of endless surprises and challenges. Much depends upon our attitude to life, wherever we may live, and I wouldn't have it any other way. CELESTIAL LIGHT AC ADEMY

Penny Wing has been a regular contributor to the Health & Beauty pages in The Leader for many years. She is well known as a wise spiritual teacher and the founder of the Celestial Light Academy here on the Orihuela Costa.

Penny says “The planet is currently undergoing a big shift in energy and this is resulting in all sorts of changes both on a personal and collective level. More and more people are starting to realise that we have invisible helpers around us such as Angels, Ascended Masters and Guides and are looking for ways to connect with them. Just because they are not in a physical body does not mean they are not there!” Penny decided to set up The Celestial Light Academy, an inspirational spiritual centre, so that people could come from Spain or other countries to attend her wide variety of certified Angelic and Spiritual courses. The peaceful atmosphere of the centre and the beautiful weather in Spain makes it an ideal place for people to relax and open up spiritually. There are now two very popular monthly groups held at the Academy – the PINK ANGEL group (an informal two hour session of spiritual discussion and meditation) and the CELESTIAL LIGHT WORKERS group (a more structured session in which people learn how to raise their spiritual awareness) Both of these groups are becoming more and more popular as people are starting to explore their spirituality and discover that there are other like minded people around! Penny also runs her extremely popular Spiritual workshops at the

Academy which cover a vast array of different topics such as Angels, Colour soul therapy, Crystals, Chakras, Auras, Numerology, Ascended Masters, Lemurian healing and much more! If there is a particular workshop you would like Penny to create especially for you and your friends this is also possible. As well as workshops Penny is a Master Teacher of Usui and Angelic Reiki and offers healing sessions as well as attunements for both these wonderful healing modalities. Angel and Oracle card readings are available with many people returning for readings on a regular basis for guidance and support.

The NEW Colour Soul readings using the magical Colour Mirrors bottles are proving to be highly successful in helping people to understand how they can work with colour and change their lives for the better! DROP IN CONSUMER PRICE INDEX The Consumer Price Index (CPI) fell by 0.2% in May year-on-year, according to figures published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This rate matches the figures published by INE at the close of May and is 0.4 percentage points (pp) higher than April. The acceleration in prices has been reflected in the main CPI headings, particularly fresh food and energy products, which are the most volatile elements in the general index. Month-on-month, prices rose 0.5%, particularly in the case of energy and fresh food. Prices of energy products fell by 6.4% year-on-year, 0.8 pp higher than the previous month. The slowdown in the fall is due to fuel moderating its decline by 1.5 points to -7.7%, as a result of the price of fuels and lubricants moderating its fall (7.4% compared with -9.5% the previous month). The year-on-year rise in prices of fresh food increased by 2.1 points in May to 2.3%. This increase is due mainly to fresh fruit, and to a lesser extent pulses and fresh vegetables. Core inflation (excluding more volatile elements in the CPI such as fresh food and energy) increased by 0.2 pp in May to 0.5%. This increase is due to the upward trend of inflation in services, processed food and non-energy industrial goods. The price increase in services rose by 0.3 pp to 0.6%, processed food by 0.2 pp to 0.9%, and non-energy industrial goods from zero to 0.1%. Within the heading of services, the highest inflation rate was in long-distance public transport, which stood at 1.4% following the fall of 1.5% the previous month; telephone services, which moderated its rate of decline by half to -1.7%; and tourism and hotel and catering, whose year-on-year rate increased by 0.5 pp to 1.1%. Prices of non-energy industrial goods increased their annual rate by 0.1 pp in May to 0.1%. The slightly upward trend is a result of clothing and footwear and car prices. Processed food, including drink and tobacco, increased by 0.9% compared with 0.7% the previous month, which is mainly due to the upturn in the price of fresh fruit, which increased by 6% year-on-year, after the fall of 1.2% in April. In monthly terms, the CPI increased by 0.5% in May, compared with a flat figure in May 2014. This increase is a result of the rise in all its components, particularly the most volatile ones, fresh food and energy. The prices of fresh food increased month-on-month by 1.4%, compared with a fall of 0.7% in the same month in 2014, due largely to the upturn in fresh fruit (9% after the rise of 1.6% in May last year). Energy products grew by 1% monthly, 0.8 pp more than in the same month last year. The price of industrial non-energy goods increased by 0.9% on April, 0.2 pp higher than in May 2014, while service prices increased by 0.1% in May on the April figure, compared with a fall of 0.3% in the same month in 2014.

The CPI rose year-on-year in May in all autonomous regions. In seven of them inflation was higher than the national average: the Balearic Islands (0.2%); Catalonia (0.1%); the Basque Country (0%); and the Region of Valencia, La Rioja and the Region of Madrid (-0.1% in all three). Andalusia and Navarre had inflation of -0.2%, the same as the national average; Murcia -0.3%; Aragon, Asturias, Cantabria and Galicia each had a rate of -0.4%; Castile-Leon and Extremadura 0.5% each; the Canary Islands and Castile-La Mancha -0.6%; Melilla -0.7%; and Ceuta -1%. The annual CPI at constant tax rates was -0.2% in May, the same as the general CPI. The INE has also published harmonised CPI figures for May, whose annual rate is -0.3% compared with -0.7% the previous month. Comparing this rate with that estimated by Eurostat for the whole of the Eurozone in April (0.3%), the differential in favour of Spain is down by 0.1 pp, to 0.6 pp.

El Rancho Bowls Club Sponsored by Rightmove. A good week bowls brought us playing against Greenlands in the Premier 20 with the contingent taking all 4 rinks, making full use of the home mat. Whilst at Greenlands the away contingent all played well and came away with a win in the pairs, the overall shots being taken by Greenlands with a one shot advantage. At Home: Ron Odell 21-09. June and David Whitworth 17-11. John Cleal, David Haynes and John Skipper 24-18. Bob Easthope, Marion Haynes, Margaret Odell and John Newell 26-18. Away: Carolyn Harris 11-21. Jim Gracie and Malc Sykes 23-11. Terry Buswell, Sheila Cooper and Malc Elmore 5-23. Keith Longshaw, Peter Blackburn, Brian Taylor and Richard Needham 10-27. On Friday we were entertained by Country Bowls, the league leaders and despite the score it was a close run match. Whilst only coming away with one rink, four of the others were very close till the end, such that we did come away with the overall shots. A good effort by most, with odd bodies not responding to their brains commands, an occasional factor of the ageing process for most of us. June Whitworth, David Haynes and John Skipper 14-16. John Cleal, Margaret Odell and Ron Odell 13-14. Bob Easthope, John Newell and Malc Sykes 919. Jim Gracie, Clive Philips and David Whitworth 29-6. Terry Buswell, Brian Taylor and Richard Needham 13-16. Marion Haynes, Rob Clark and Malc Elmore 13-17. El Rancho Bowls Club is holding an Open day on Saturday 22nd August at 10am. T.M.G.S. AT REAL CLUB DE GOLF CAMPOAMOR

A full start list turned up at this, one of our favourite venues. The forecast was for very high temperatures, luckily we also accompanied with a cooling breeze which helped to maintain the concentration. The course is in very good condition but a little maintenance on the greens earlier this week made putting a little more complicated, they were slow for this course. Today I had the pleasure of playing with that lovely man Vernon Brown, now Vernon is a very steady player consistently playing to his handicap of 8, however his 3rd shot onto the first green should have told him something, his chip from just of the green dug its heels in and came up 30ft short, his first putt didn’t do any better and it took 2 more to get thing into the hole. Vernon, not a happy chappy! I lost count of how many “3 putts” he had, but by the time we reached the 17th it appeared that he had it figured out, finishing with 2 pars. Now the long running saga of the battle between Sandra Twentyman and Roger Nilsen continued this week with Roger just piping her by a couple of points, although she thought that it was much more, a little more practice on the adding up might help Sandra! The “2’s” pot this week grew to a very handsome €61, it being a roll over from last week, this was shared between Joe Dean and homeward bound Chris Oatley, both making their birdies on hole 17. Chris very generously sponsored the N.T.P.’s this week and ended up taking home one of his bottles for being closest on hole 17, Hole 4 Mike O’Regan, Hole 6 Shelia Dean, hole 10 Joe Dean, Hole 15 nada.

Although we did have some new players join the Society today it left only 2 visitors and in this category Glen Lang took the prize with 32 pts. In the Silver category it needed 31 pts. to take 4th place and of course that went to the lady that needs help with the adding up. 3rd place went to local member George Chapman with 32 pts. 2nd place was taken by new member Stephen Matthews 36 pts. but way out in front came Norwegian member Carsten Landaas with 38 pts. another Norwegian member who has just gained membership to the Gold category, Roger Nilsen returned 34 pts. to finish 4th, yet another Norwegian, Hans Arvesen must have thought that he had done enough to win with his 38 pts. sadly it was only good enough for 3rd, Captain John Eyre could have had the same idea but due to his lower handicap he came in 2nd both players scoring 38 pts. therefore the winner this week and with the best score of the day was local member Mike O’Regan with a massive 42 pts. Photo: Silver category winners. Our next game is at La Finca on the 8th July so if you would like to join this friendly group just call the secretary on 661 524 101 or visit our new website www.mgs.org for full details , note for your diary, 2 day golf trip to Las Pinaillas (Albacete) all included €100 again the details are on our site Club de golf El Paraiso are running an official Federation competition at Campoamor on the 12th July you must be federated to play in this one. SPORTSMAN GS, QUESADA Our day at Mar Menor Golf day started for some with a great breakfast served up at the Galleon Bar before we set out on the road to Mar Menor Golf Resort. A turnout of 19 players with one player forgetting he had subscribed to the event. We took advantage of the May & June offer from IRM of €35 for Green Fee & Buggy. The course was in good condition, however, the greens were poor. The weather was hot and when the wind did pick up for once this was welcome. The winning score of 37 points was shot by Nikki Ead who played very well, stating that she played well due to being in a group of good golfers. After the game most of the players headed back for some much needed refreshment and to discuss the ups and downs of the day. A big thank you to Tracey & Steve at the Galleon Bar, Quesada for donating the vino and serving up a cracking Chilli con Carne & Rice. Winners of the Day : Winner : Nikki Ead 37 points Runner-up : Kevin Hall 33 points Nearest the Pins : 2nd Dave Smith, 8th No Winner 14th Nikki Ead, 17th Dave Smith Football Card : John (Birthday Boy) Kemp Thanks all for a great day, next outing is our bounce game at Font Del Llop Thursday 9th July, (€39 GF & Buggy). Saturday the 27th of June saw The Celts celebrate their fourth annual Captains day. What an excellent turnout of 54 members. The day was exceptionally warm with over 30 degrees the order of the day. Our captain arrived bright and early to meet and greet all the players and wish them luck. As the hour neared Eddie took his place on the first tee and smacked his drive down the middle of the fairway. What water, what out of bounds? The course is in fabulous condition and well prepared by Wayne and all his staff. As always the caddy master and starters provided us with the normal courtesy and professionalism that we have become accustomed to, thanks to all at La Serena. When the golf finished the members and their guests adjourned to El Prado restaurant in San Miguel de Salinas, with almost 80 people sitting for the meal. On arrival we were treated to a Cava reception, which was followed by a superb dinner, well done to Juan and Pillar. The night was made complete by the

one and only Jackie Whyte and her various support acts. Jackie selected four volunteers, victims might be a better name, who treated us to a version of the Full Monty. Well done to Camillus, Frank, Denis and John for being good sports. There was a cry from the floor that Denis and John had been practicing the routine. You will have to have a look on facebook to judge for yourselves. On to the scores, the longest drive winner was claimed by Camillus Fitzpatrick by a matter of inches from the other monster hitter Denis. Our nearest the pin winners, were Mark McCluskey, Sue Benning, Alisdair McLean, Martyn Heaney, Chriss Fyffe and Liam Powell. Our visitor’s prize was won by Warren Davies with 27 points. Category 2, 3rd place went to Steve Baron with 36points, 2nd place to Chriss Fyffe 38points and the winner of the category was Larry Brennan with 38 points. Category 1, 3rd place Terry Fitzgerald with 35 points, 2nd went to Sue Owens 38 points and the winner of the cate-

gory was Mike Reeves with 38 points. The gross score was won by Denis McCormack with 31 points. Runner-up on the day with a very fine score of 40 points Harry Lee. Our winner, with a fantastic 42 points our vicecaptain, Bev Ellender. Congratulations Bev on your fine victory. I am sure it was all the more satisfying to share the occasion with your daughter and son in law. I would like to take this opportunity of congratulating all those who supported Eddie’s day and all the winners in particular. We are delighted to welcome new members to our club where we offer a traditional golfing experience at affordable prices. Being a federated member has many advantages for golfers and we are able to play from 20 euro per game. Our next away day is at Los Colinas in the International League (22 euro) per player. (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. ‘Around and About the courses - VISTABELLA ’ The golf course was officially opened on Saturday 26th September 2009 with a competition for invited guests followed by a golf clinic given by course designer and former Ryder Cup player Manuel Pinero. The course has a par of 73 measuring 6,193 metres off the white tees and 5,844 metres off the visitors yellow tees and is set in beautiful and natural surroundings close to the towns of Montesinos and Jacarilla. At present the clubhouse facilities are temporary in nature with modern ‘mobile’ type buildings incorporating the golf shop, changing room and restaurant facilities complete with a covered outer terrace area. The practise area is excellent with 20 bays of which 10 are covered located close to the clubhouse along with a practise putting green and they are currently constructing a much needed practise sand bunker. The golf course currently consists of only 11 holes due a complication over original planning approval with the existing holes being under the planning control of Orihuela and the other 7 holes being under the planning control of Jacarilla and the 'vision' is to have these other holes in place by 2018 at a cost of circa €4m. The course designer has made a wonderful job of this course making the most of the natural terrain while introducing the minimum of water hazards and strategically well positioned bunkers and waste areas. The course is beautiful on the eye with subtle dog legs and changes in elevation and with large undulating greens that will put the utmost strain on the putter if you leave the ball on the wrong part of the green. For the better standard of golfer you will be impressed by the surface of the greens which roll well but more importantly ‘takes’ a good iron shot without damaging the surface. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Some fantastic prizes were up for grabs, courtesy of MUNCHIES restaurant ( V Martin ), this week at the Hubs' latest society event .Richard Kent, Munchies proprietor and keen Hub member was delighted to support the event at the popular Quara course adjacent to the Plaza, where 32 players contested the Hubs sixth Grand Prix event. Warren Harris was unable to continue his recent back to back victories, however he did manage 33pts for a creditable 5th place and eleven valuable G.P. points. Top of the pile was regular visitor and member Peter Hogg returning 36 pts., to include a magnificent 22pt back nine, plus a birdy on the 15th. Highlight of the day occurred in the 2's competition where Kev Adamson claimed his stake of the pot on the 220 yard 6th, par 3 for 4 pts. and then had the audacity to repeat the feat on the 196 yard thirteenth, for 4 additional points, swelling his overall tally to 35pts, one behind Hogg but being edged out of second spot on countback by Paul Durrant. Richard Kent's additional prize of breakfast for 2 for any player birdying the stroke index one, par 5 fourteenth, went unsurprisingly

unclaimed. Richard was joined by wife Anne to present a string of prizes plus the Munchies cup to Peter Hogg. The Kents have been on the Costa Blanca for eleven years, running the successful Munchies establishment to include breakfast, lunch and their famous " Steak Stone " dinners until late. LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY AT SAURINES By Mike Chapman Our first game of the week on Monday was a 2 ball better ball which was played in lovely conditions and with the greens coming back to excellent order after recent maintenance there could be no excuses. Again with this format it was the Lady/Gent combination that took the top two positions with Olga Douglas and Hendrick Oldenziel in first place with a very good score of 46 pts. In second with 44 pts was Annemarie Weisheit and Bryan Neal. The closest runners up both with 40 pts were Dave Pulling/Pete Dunn and Mike Chapman/Alan Douglas. Pete deserved better following his shot of the day scoring a spectacular eagle 2 on the Par 4 second hole. On Wednesday it was our second away day of the year which took us to La Finca at Algorfa and again the format chosen by our organisers was a 2 ball better ball. There was a welcoming breeze to take the edge off the high temperatures and the course was in excellent condition. It was a very close contest with the top four teams all scoring 41 pts and having to be separated on a count back. There were no winners in the 2's Club so we will have a triple rollover next Wednesday. The final placings were as follows:

1st Geoff Biggerstaff and Nick Campbell 2nd Liz Robertson and Bryan Neal 3rd Harry Harris and Allen McClusky 4th Ken Robertson and Janice Holtham. Nearest the Pin winners were: Hole 3 Alan Douglas, Hole 11 Bryan Neal, Hole 13 Olga Douglas After the game we all enjoyed an excellent full English breakfast at nearby Monty's bar where thanks were expressed to Alan and Olga Douglas for their superb organisation despite some late cancellations affecting the draw. Friday saw the second semi final of our Singles Match Play Knockout competition with Olga Douglas breezing through with a 7 & 6 victory over John Collins and will now play Geoff Biggerstaff in the final. The remaining members played a Team Counter game where the number of scores required are not known until the team reaches the next tee. The game was won with an excellent score of 95 pts by Brian Townend, Harry Harris, Brian Dent and 'Albert' who were 7 pts ahead of the second placed team comprising Barry Holtham, Annemarie Weisheit, Maria Oldenziel and 'Albert'.

ORANGE TREE GOLF SOCIETY AT SAURINES Once again this new golf society met for breakfast and instructions at The Orange Tree bar and Restaurant in Cabo Roig before setting of for the golf course. What a pleasure it is to be returning to this wonderful course possibility one of the best one the Costa. What a fantastic job that has been done after the recent work, all though the greens were slow due to excess grass, it is understandable due to the hollow tyning. This course is now again one of the best and must thank all the staff for the excellent service and friendly welcome. Once gathered in the bar the Captain, Fred Noakes, decided on a pairs Texas Scramble competition. We all then set off on a wonderful sunny (and extremely hot) day. Great pleasure was had by all playing with friends. We also welcome numerous members from other societies whom choose to play with us when they society did not have a game. Unfortunately the captain could not play due to an injury, get well soon Fred. We all returned back to our home base, The Orange Tree bar and restaurant in Cabo Roig, for the presentation and a few drinks along

with the excellent snacks. Thanks must go to Chris, Nigel, Lilly, Brian, Katie and Keva for the wonderful service. The winners were Kedric Rhodes and Dave Eadington with a nett 65.7, 2nd were Chris Blown and Simon Sharples with 66.6 and 3rd Andy Shuttle and Peter Hunt with 70.1. NTP´s went to Jim Cooper on the 6th, Roger Lyles on the 10th, Willy and John on the 13th and finally Martin Lowe on the 18th. The next society event is on Tuesday 14th July, all golfers of any standard are welcome to join the regular members and can either place they name upon the start sheet within the restaurant. Or you can either phone the restaurant on 965323235, or email us on orangetree@hotmail.es. TORREVIEJA LAUNCH NEW ‘200 CLUB’ VENTURE At a recent press conference, Pinada Blinds were the first company to join CD Torrevieja's 200 club. It's a scheme where a business buys an entry ticket for 200 euros, which entitles them to 2 season tickets valued at 200 euros. Then on 20 August, at Vicente Garcia stadium, in front of TV cameras, radio, press, as well as entrants and fans, a draw will be made for the lucky business to have their name and logo on all Torry shirts. In addition to this, they will also receive an advertising board in the ground, and a full page advertisement in every match day programme for the season. Other items at the conference, included details of next season match day tickets. The moto of 'este ano si' (this year yes), headed posters displaying ticket prices, which surprising are unchanged from last season. This means that a season ticket in the tribuna (grandstand) is still only 125 euros, whilst general entry stays at 100 euros. Entry on match day, remains at 15 euros in tribuna, 10 in general, 5 for 16-21 year olds, whilst under 16s get in free. Season tickets can be purchased at the Torry Army hut (Mon-Fri 10-12), or at the ground. A new supplier will produce top quality shirts, which will be on sale for only 25 euros. The shop inside the ground (tribunal area) has been refitted, and will be stocked with brand new CD Torrevieja merchandise. Team manager Pedreno spoke of his high expectations for next season, when he hopes to have some players who have been released from div 2b sides, within his ranks. One player not donning the blue and white shirt of Torry is Alexis, for this strong central defender has elected to return to Mexico and play league football out there. Amongst 4 or 5 English lads hopefully attending forthcoming trials, will be Lewis, who last season was on the books of Elche. Pedreno also confirmed that div 2b side Alicante based Hercules, will be visit-

UEFA DICIPLINARY PROCEEDINGS LAUNCHED AGAINST BARCELONA The massive presence of pro-independence flags and the singing of pro Independence songs at the final of the Champions League, held last month in Berlin, look as though they might prove costly to FC Barcelona The club are now the subject of disciplinary proceedings by UEFA which could result in a fine of 60,000 euros or even the partial closure of the Camp Nou when they play their next European game. Meanwhile the former President Joan Laporta remains indignant over UEFA's decision. In a video statement made entirely in Catalan he said "It's regrettable that they've opened disciplinary proceedings against Barça because our fans displayed Esteladas [Catalan pro-independence flags] alongside club flags during the final in Berlin". He believes that the actions of the fans were positive: "Our members were right to exercise their freedom of expression. They expressed the way we feel in Barcelona. Our flag is Barça's flag and the Senyera and the Estelada represent an intimate relationship with Catalonia", he concluded.

Fourteen members of the England Cricket Squad, accompanied by Management, staff and coaches are now back in England having completed a successful 4-day pre-series bonding and training camp last week in the build up to the Ashes series at Desert Springs Resort, Almeria. During the Pre-Ashes Camp the players have become acquainted with their new head coach, Trevor Bayliss, as they prepare for this week’s first Ashes Test. The camp was designed to be a relaxed affair, to provide an opportunity for the players to both work seriously on their fielding skills and fitness levels, whilst at the same time having the opportunity to benefit from the extensive resort facilities with planned bond-

ing activities. With the new coach Trevor Bayliss only arriving from Australia on the previous Thursday, the director of England cricket, Andrew Strauss, considered the camp at Desert Springs Resort to be essential in Bayliss forging bonds with his new charges before the series opener begins in Cardiff on Wednesday. Andrew Strauss, ECB Director of Cricket commented: "To all at Desert Springs, thank you very much for an outstanding camp. The organisation, the attention to detail, and the friendly service were all of the highest order. We hope to see you again soon.” Trevor Bayliss, ECB Head Coach remarked;

"The was my first ever visit to Spain. Desert Springs has outstanding facilities and a beautiful golf course. The resort was the perfect relaxed setting for me to spend some time getting to know the players and thank you to all of the staff for a wonderful stay.” Simon Coaker, Sales & Marketing Manager for The Almanzora Group Ltd. said; "Desert Springs is delighted to have been selected to host the England Pre-Ashes Camp, an event that will allow the Resort to continue to grow in terms of its reputation for quality, a factor of benefit and prestige to the Resort, its members, property owners and the local area."
