NEW LEGISLATION FOR RENTALS

Once again, further restrictions, imposed by the Valencian Government on the letting of property, is about to throw the rental market into confusion, and it could well cost the livelihood of many thousands of peo-

ple living here on the Costa. New legislation now makes it compulsory for all rental tourist accommodation, including Viviendas Turisticas, to register their property in the Registro de Empresas, Establecimientos y Profesiones TurĂsticas (Register for tourist businesses, establishments and professionals). This comes in the light of pressure being placed on the government by the Hotel and Tourism sectors who are insisting that the authorities embark on a campaign to root out illegal renters and rental agencies that are openly operating on the Costa Blanca. They maintain that those who are renting apartments and villas illegally, both individuals and agents, are committing fraud to the Tax Agency, Social Security and to the Treasury and they have asked for more local inspectors to carry out checks throughout the region. The new legislation now means that the job of regulating private property let to tourists is no longer covered by the State Law of Urban Rentals (LAU), and is instead subject to regional government law, much of which aims to restrict private tourist rentals in favour of the much more powerful hotel industry Catalonia has already introduced similar legislation and they are now taking action against illegal internet portals. Hosbec, which represent local hoteliers, is requesting that Valencia does exactly the same.

In many places, owners who wish to rent out their apartments or villas to holidaymakers have to apply for a licence and from 3 July that is now also the case in the Community of Valencia as all properties that are rented commercially (short term or long term), have now to be registered with the authorities. It is recommended by local administrators and lawyers that the registration process should start immediately, because the decree could be enforced at any time, but as with most things in Spain it will be no easy task. The application form (8 pages) is only available in Spanish so to ensure that the documentation is completed and submitted correctly it will almost certainly mean that owners have to engage the services of a legal representative. If you own or manage 2-4 properties, you must register each individual property. If you manage five or more properties, however, then you must register as an ‘Empresa’ (business), rather than as an individual and include your generic inscription number in any rental advertisement or agreement, not individual property registration numbers.

ADVERTISING HOTLINE

Once a property owner has a registration number, it must then be included in all advertising for the property (ie newspapers, websites and other adverts). Failure to include the registration number in your advertising could lead to fines for the owner, advertiser and the managing agent. Fines are set at a minimum of 6,000€ and a maximum of 90,000€ and penalties for businesses can include suspension of trading. Needless to say, both the hotel and nonhotel sectors have applauded the action saying that they will almost certainly help to improve their situation where unregulated villas and apartments have been partly responsible in the average holiday occupancy dropping by four points last year from 70.1% in 2013 to just 66.1%. However David Tornos, President of the Tourist Rental Management Association, says “The passing of this law could deal a death blow to a growing sector that contributes enormously to the economy,” while ASOTUR, the Asociación de Gestores de Viviendas de Uso Turístico, are quoted as saying, “This is an attack on civil liberties, limiting the use of private property and the freedom of tourists to choose how they

want to spend their holidays.” But once again this looks like nothing more than an ailing country clutching at financial straws, a way of striking hard at a form of local tourism that helps to support thousands of small bars, restaurants and businesses, far more than the big ‘all inclusive’ hotels. And what about all those quaint Spanish villages where there are no hotels, but where there are rental properties in abundance. Their regular occupation and the spending power of the tourists who use them, is essential to the wealth of these rural economies without which there would be a great deal more poverty in Spain. But the long and short of it is that you need to comply with the new legislation as a matter of priority so, in simple terms, if you have a property that you currently rent or you are considering renting in the future, you need to be seen to be going through the registration process. Perhaps the first port of call should be your community administrator who will be aware of all the latest, relevant legislation.

BAR KENZ DOES IT AGAIN!

Bar Kenz on San Luis have raised 1300 for Maria and the Pink ladies for the AECC. Their amazing customers raised the money via race nights and the weekly Saturday card bingo. Plus regular customers often donate bags of loose change to add to the funds. The money will go towards the early screening plan for breast, cervical and prostate cancer. To make an appointment phone 602 418 959 or 965 32 9841 between 10 and 1 weekdays.

A passenger from Teeside has been sent a £4,800 bill for causing a diversion of an Alicante bound Jet2 flight from Leeds Bradford Airport. Grant Marshall, who was among a party of 14, refused repeated requests to stop drinking alcohol, using intimidating language and threatening behaviour, the airline said. The pilot was eventually forced

to land at Toulouse, where Marshall was handed over to French police. As well as the costs, Marshall has also been banned from Jet2 flights for life. Jet2 managing director Phil Ward said: “To protect the safety and comfort of our loyal customers and staff, we openly pledged to take actions to stamp out antisocial behaviour on board and that is exactly

what we are doing. Jet2 is a holiday airline, so we want holidaymakers to have a wonderful time from the moment they start their holiday with us. “More than 1,150 passengers were inconvenienced that day by Mr Marshall’s antisocial and unacceptable behaviour. This is why we issued him with this bill for the costs involved. “Most passengers have a fantastic time travelling and of course know how to behave onboard, which is why we need to stop disorderly behaviour from the few like Mr Marshall.” Following this incident, Jet2.com has already received a number of calls from passengers on-board the flight thanking and congratulating the airline on taking this stance.

LET’S GET THINGS GOING ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA If you find a problem that you would like the Orihuela Costa authorities to deal with you must first of all make sure that they know about it. You can do this by taking a photo of the offending item or issue and sending it, with a short explanation, to the email address:

THERAPY WITH SEA LIONS FOR APANEE KIDS

Following on from the pioneering procedures for cancer sufferers developed using the facilities at Elche’s Rio Safari Park, three children from the Association of Parents of Students with Special Educational Needs (APANEE), have been receiving similar therapeutic treatment in Elche with sea lions, where these aquatic mammals act as therapists to the children who are suffering from a wide range of disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, psychomotor retardation, spina bifida and multiple sclerosis. The activity lasted about 30 minutes. During that time, the sea lions were encouraged to swim around the children, touching and nudging them in the process, while the trainer explained everything about the animals. During the process he was also able to simulate interaction between the children and the sea lions. APANEE has been able to benefit from this therapy which has been organized by COCEMFE Alicante within its program of social health care for people with disabilities, which is funded by the Ministry of Health. According to the supporters of the initiative, it is essential to continue to investigate this type of therapy, which not only increases personal autonomy and self-esteem, It will test whether they derive any benefit from contact with these acquatic mammals – under the close supervision of the trained instructors.

APANEE say that they consider it essential to experiment and to invest in this type of therapy for people with disabilities, since the benefits to their social, therapeutic and health levels are exceptional. The procedures and the experience they gain helps to improve the self-esteem of people with disabilities, they encourage communication, socialization and relaxation. The aim is to stimulate the visual, tactile and auditory senses through physical contact with these animals, as well as to improve postural control of people with mobility problems. COCEMFE is an organisation that was formed in 1987 bringing together a number of different bodies, all working together toward the integration of people with physical disabilities and the promotion of their individual associations. Prior to the attendance in the park by APANEE the beneficiaries of the therapy were all members of the Elche Association of Women Affected by Breast Cancer (Amacmec) who have attended the centre’s therapeutic baths on seven occasions, with each of the visits supervised by therapists and trainers. According to a Rio Safari occupational therapist with the Maria Galvañ Foundation, the sea lion is a "docile" animal that responds very well to interaction with humans. "It is a very motivating and innovative therapeutic tool that gets extremely beneficial results" all of which help these patients to "improve their emotional well-being while they are having fun and by also raising lots of smiles."

THATCHER UNDONE Members of Parliament have criticised Madrid's new Left-wing mayoress after it emerged that she is considering scrapping Margaret Thatcher’s name from a square in the city centre. Mrs Carmena is reportedly considering the change after members of Spain’s anti-austerity party Podemos, which formed part of the mayoress’s victorious coalition, called for the removal of Mrs Thatcher’s name. The square was named after Britain’s only female prime minister less than a year ago.

VIRGEN DEL CARMEN IN TORREVIEJA Celebrations conclude with a fireworks display at the port next Thursday night

KIDNAP DEATH A Spanish businessman and his two employees were found dead in a mountainous area of the central state of Aragua, near the place where he was kidnapped a month ago, the Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office said Friday. The bodies of Jaime Carrera, 68, and employees Yorman Acosta and Angel Seijas were found buried Thursday in the town of San Casimiro after a suspect in the case was arrested.

DRUGS SIEZED Spanish police say they seized more than 3 tons of cocaine and broke up a major international drug trafficking gang whose leader lived in luxury in Madrid, posing as a football talent scout. The National Police said the leader, who was not identified, employed a network of Serbian ex-soldiers to bring cocaine in yachts and cargo containers from Latin America to Europe.

Torrevieja got their festivities underway last week in honour of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron saint of fishermen and sailors, with the traditional offering of flowers placed in front of the Monument to the Man of the Sea. The ceremony was carried out by Pedro Angel Carmona and the councillor of fiestas Africa Celdrán, accompanied by Joaquín Albaladejo. Also in attendance were representatives of the security forces and a number of other town councillors. The festivities will last until day 16. The celebrations will conclude next Thursday 16 July with a church Service in the Church Inmaculada Concepcion starting at 7.30 pm followed by a procession with the float

carried by the Costaleros of the Huerto de los Olivos. It will conclude by the port on the Paseo Viste Alegre with a firework display. Earlier in the day, however, if you want to see some fun, from 11.30 am you can watch contestants taking part in the Traditional "cucaña" (greasy pole contest) in the port area. In the best traditions of ‘Its a Knockout’ the 4 metre long pole will be covered in grease and erected in the sea. Later in the week, if you still want to party, Electromar 2015 comes to Torrevieja. It takes place in the Parque Antonio Soria on Saturday evening starting at 6pm. Tickets cost 18 euro and are available at www.electromar2015.com

FORMER SP AIN ALICANTE TO REM O VE SUBSIDIES FROM BULLRING EUROVISION SINGER DIES Within days of the appointment to her current role Moreno was to be found outside city hall demonstrating for a bullfighting ban in the province (Leader edition 554) so the council announcement is hardly surprising.

REPORTER FLEES EGYPT A Spanish reporter who wrote a book on the blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood has said that he had fled Egypt after he was warned that local authorities were planning to arrest him. Ricard Gonzalez, 36, had been working in Egypt since 2011 as a correspondent for Spanish daily El Pais and had also contributed articles for Argentine newspaper La Nacion. He fled Egypt two weeks ago. "Spanish authorities told me there was an imminent risk of being arrested and indicted, and it could be serious. They advised me to leave the country," Gonzalez told AFP in a telephone interview.

The Alicante tripartite government (PSOE, Guanyar and Compromís) are to withdraw all council subsidies and public aid from the City Bullring, thereby fulfilling one of the promises made in their Municipal Election Manifestos. The removal will take place from next year. From 2017, however, the new Councillor for Youth and Animal Protection, Marisol Moreno, has said that the municipality will also prohibit the use of the municipal arena for bullfights, the date on which the current contract with the events company ends.

The measure will also affect the grant made to the Alicante bullfighting school, which teaches the ‘sport’ to children from 9-16 years of age, as well as maintaining the city bullfighting museum. Moreno said that the bullring is a municipal building and that is how it will be operated in the future. “We are currently studying the specifications of the operating agreement, the possible future agreements and the applications to which its future use will be put,"she said. “The aim is that the property will remain as a multipurpose space that can accommodate any venture apart from those involving the torture and killing of animals”.

Jaime Morey, who represented Spain in the 1972 Eurovision song contest, has died at his home in La Paz. Morey, passed away last Tuesday, aged 73, after a long illness. The Alicante born singer finished 10th scoring 83 pts with a song called ‘Amanece’ when the contest was held in Edinburgh in 1972. He had previously tried to represent his country on 3 previous occasions, 1965, 1970 and 1971. He also finished as runner up in the 1964 edition of the Benidorm International Song Festival, with the song 'Las Mañanitas' Morey continued to be popular throughout Spain well into the 1980’s.

COUNCILLOR IMPLEMENTS STUDY TO ALLOW PETS ON LA MATA BEACH The Councillor for Torrevieja Beaches, Javier Manzanares, used the symbolic blue flag raising ceremony at Cala Piteras on Monday, to announce that he was undertaking a study into the establishment of a zone for pet bathing on the beach at La Mata. He said that he was looking at the area close to the old salt pier. He said that the council has a commitment to the members of the public who own pets so he was keen to see such a facility in place; however, once it is authorised, anyone wishing to use the area for their pet would first need to obtain a permit to do so from the departments of Health and Beaches. ity of Torrevieja’s beaches, something that does not go unnoticed by the many bathers who regularly flock to them. He pledged to continue his efforts to increase the quality of beaches and bathing facilities and said that he intended to achieve a greater number of distinctions next year, ‘because everything can be improved.’ Blue flags were also raised on the day at La Mata, Los Locos, El Cura and Los Naufragos. With the media covering the Blue Flag ceremony, residents from Rocio del Mar also used the occasion to express their displeasure, following the authorisation by the Department of Planning, to build six tower blocks on the coastline, three of which are already completed. They say that the construction of the apartment blocks generates a shadow on the beach from mid afternoon when legislation clearly prohibits the erection of such buildings

With a view to raising people's awareness on the need to learn how to coexist by respecting and protecting the environment, at "la Caixa" Foundation the bank run different awareness initiatives and promote environmental protection measures. One such measure is the popular exhibition ‘More than just wood’ which opened last week in Torrevieja. Running through the summer months till 3 September the display is situated in the city fishing port. It was opened last Tuesday by the mayor, José Manuel Dolon, Felipe Pulido, the Commercial Director of CaixaBank in Valencia and Murcia, Francisco Javier Gomez, Curator of the exhibition and the Councilor for Culture, Alejandro Blanco. Forests are the most biologically diverse terrestrial ecosystems in the world. They preserve the heritage of billions of years of evolution. The exhibition takes visitors through a complete tour of the complex forest ecosystem. It demonstrates how a tree works, how humus forms, what is wood, from the humble earthworms, essential for making humus, to the trees, the undisputed protagonists, The exhibition is organized by the Social "la Caixa" in collaboration with the Municipality of Torrevieja, and can be visited in the Port of Torrevieja, until September 3, 2015.

SPAIN POPULATION FALL The population of Spain fell for the third year running in 2014 as people left the crisis-hit country to seek a better future elsewhere. There were 46.4 million residents in the country as of the first of January, a drop of 72,335, or 0.16 percent, from the same time last year, according to figures from the National Statistics Institute recently released. The British community remained Spain's third-largest foreign group even though the number of British nationals living there fell by 2.02 percent to 303,776.

NO CHANGE AS ORIHUELA COSTA SUFFERS INSTANT NEGLECT Despite the new government of Orihuela promising a better future for the Costa, many of the residents are feeling even more neglected than ever before, especially when it comes to one of the longest standing problems on the coast, green waste collections. Although a record number of quality standards may have been recognized on the beaches, it seems unlikely that even those recognitions will continue, as the assessments were done last year, long before the current government took over. During the first official busy weekend of the summer season, many visitors were appalled at the state of the streets, filthier than ever before, making what should be a rich and diverse tourist and investment destination look like a derelict rubbish tip on just about every street and piece of waste ground. One local resident commented that “The lorry that empties our green waste on Monday drove past the pile that was there. Not looking too good for the now council.” Another commented, “we have had 2 large skips parked at the back of our urb for four weeks now and lazy people who can't be bothered to walk to the correct bin have dumped their household waste in them, also builders rubble balustrades etc, our administrator has bombarded the town hall to ask them to empty them but to no avail and as you can imagine they smell terrible, are full of flies and now rats have been seen!” A third commented that “we are being told we can be fined if we put our rubbish in the bins before 6pm at night, but there is nowhere in the bins and the streets are full of rubbish.” The current hot conditions will be drying it out quicker, but it is clear that lot of the garden waste has been there for some time. As is always the case, as one small piece of rubbish is dumped, it soon magnifies as more rubbish is placed on the pile. The problem is historically partly caused by residents who may not

have contacted the town hall for collection, although it appears that residents who are making contact are getting nowhere though, and partly caused by commercial waste which is not being tended to after a spate of fines and legal threats from the last government did ease the problem for a while. It has always been a problem too when domestic tourists from other parts of Spain return to the coast for their holidays, their first actions often being to tend to their gardens, but with the amount of rubbish that is left on the streets the influx of tourists are not seeing the problem is caused by more people being here, all they are seeing is dirty, neglected streets, affecting the lives and lifestyles of the residents and the value of properties as nobody would ever want to buy or live in a place that can so quickly become just short of a slum. Clearly it´s time that the new government start to live up to their promises and make Orihuela better, not just for those in the city, but it´s time to reverse the historic neglect of those who foot the biggest part of the tax bill for the rest, although the obvious fear might be that the PP have always intended to privatise the waste collection service once again, which one way or another will mean higher costs to those who pay the taxes, but would the service be any better? Years of privatisation in Torrevieja says no, but at the current state, could it be any worse? Or is that the real reason for the neglect, to justify privatisation and provide a better than dreadful service?

“It´s time that the new government started to live up to their promises and make Orihuela better for all citizens, and not just those in the city.”

The new left-wing council in Madrid has said it plans to remove all names relating to Gen Francisco Franco's dictatorship in streets and squares. Many streets were renamed under a 2007 "historical memory" law on replacing symbols of Franco's 1939-75 rule. But some 167 streets are still named after regime figures. Although the Madrid council admitted there was "no concrete plan" to start changing street names, she said it would be carried out in co-ordination with local districts and civil society groups.

COURT RULING OVERTURNED A Spanish farmacia that was fined for refusing to sell women morning-after pills has been told that its right to “ideological freedom” was violated by the sanction. The regional health authorities of Andalusia, fined the pharmacy in Seville €3,000 in 2008, because it sold neither the emergency contraceptive morning-after pill nor condoms. Spanish pharmacies are required by law to provide both, with no prescription required. However, the constitutional court has overturned the decision on appeal.

NEW SUPER STRENGTH SATELLITE DISH Satellites Direct of san miguel have released a new satellite dish from portugal. This dish is giving amazing strengths and in some area almost as good as a 1.9 mtr dish. We spoke to NIgel ( the owner ) who explained, ¨ for a while now we have promoted the famaval 1.4 mtr dish ,however we are always looking to improve where ever we can and if possible save clients money. We are amazed at this new dish and the signal we are acheiving. Signals are measured in db gain and for instance on BBC london ( one of the weakest ) you need 6.5db gain for this to work. Although areas are different ,generally with the famaval we were hitting 7.5-8db ,which is enough but obviously the higher the better. The new super strength is getting us 8.5 to 10 db gain , normally we would only expect to get around 10 with a 1.9 mtr dish. So at the fraction of the cost of a 1.9 mtr this sturdy new dish is doing a fantastic job. However ,If people still want the famaval this is still possible for the same price, thats their decision. We also have other exciting things going on with a new receiver that has satellite and android, so basically most of what you put on your phone you can put on this, including movies and series on demand , facebook, google , internet TV , netflix etc etc It has a full web browser and you tube. You can even have a version with a built in hard drive for recording and a air mouse so you just point at the screen. ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

THE SOLIDARITY FRIDGE As a child, I was a fussy eater and vividly remember leaving food on my plate, which would always lead to an abrupt ticking off from my mother. She would inevitably add the comment, "Barrie, if you don't eat it, I will send it to the poor, starving children in Africa who would be glad of it." As annoying as it was at the time, I still remember my mother's words and I am grateful for them; as a result, I hate to see food wasted and thrown away. The World recession has brought into sharp focus the appalling poverty and helpless situation that many people find themselves in, and which many governments are unwilling or unable to rectify. In the UK and many parts of Europe, the lack of basic essentials, such as a warm home, food and clothing are denied to many, and are a sad reflection of a so-called civilised society. In the UK, child poverty and homelessness remain at disgracefully high levels for one of the wealthiest countries in the world. In Spain and the Canary Islands, food banks have become part of the pattern of existence for many people, and it is now a common sight for charity collections of basic food items to be collected from wealthier shoppers during their weekly visit to the supermarket. On this small holiday island, it is a sad reflection of our times that charity food collections are taking place just a few yards from some of the country's most expensive and luxurious hotels; where wealthy holidaymakers enjoy sumptuous quantities of food and five star accommodation. I was very interested to hear of a recent development to help the poor

and needy by the installation of a 'Solidarity Fridge' A Solidarity in one of Spain's cities. The 'Solidarity Fridge' is a Fridge in Murcia large white refrigerator that has been installed in a prominent position on the pavement in the small city of Galdakao, which is near Bilbao. A fence surrounds the fridge to tell people that it is not just an abandoned appliance, but a pioneering project aimed at reducing food wastage. Restaurants and residents are encouraged to place leftover or unused food, which would otherwise be put into a bin, into the fridge and made available to those in need. Any item that is left in the fridge can be taken by anyone, and particularly those in need. There are strict rules in place preventing donors from leaving raw fish, meat, eggs, canned or packaged goods that are past their use by date. Any home cooked food must include a label about when it was made. A typical day might see unopened milk cartons, sandwiches or a left over casserole left in the fridge. This idea came from realising how much edible food local supermarkets were throwing out. Local research led to discovering a similar successful scheme in Berlin, which operates a network of shared fridges. The Spanish city ing from, the idea must seem heaven sent. In addition, reducing food realised that they could make it work for their city too, and so a small wastage in a world where there is widespread hunger and starvation group of volunteers was established to make it happen, as well as must be welcome. The idea of a 'Solidarity Fridge' has now spread to a second Spanish city, Murcia, and enquiries are being received from obtaining agreement, licencing and support from the city authorities. As well as making food available to those in need, the aim of the all over the country, as well as other countries interested in starting Solidarity Fridge is to make use of food that would otherwise end up similar schemes. It just goes to show that the seeds of one thoughtful, in the bin. Anyone is allowed to take food from the fridge, as and simple idea can quickly spread for the benefit of others. when they need it. SAN JAVIER JAZZ FESTIVAL LESSON FROM EX-GRAMMAR SCHOOL PUPIL - JETHRO TULL FAMED MARTIN BARRE BY ANDREW ATKINSON Reporting from the San Javier Jazz Festival GRAMMAR school educated Martin Barre - of Jethro Tull fame - certainly gave a lesson at the 2015 XVIII San Javier Jazz Festival.

'Hola, it's great to be here. We love the weather too and the food. We're really happy', said Barre. Barre, the guitarist of Jethro Tull for over four decades, whose album sales exceed 60 million, has worked alongside some of the world's top stars - including Paul McCartney and Phil Collins. Having been on the same stage as Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, Barre's presence in Spain was one to be devoured. Birmingham born Barre, 68, fronted Jethro Tull's Martin Barre in an open air auditorium, thrilling the Murcia multi-national crowd. Barre, voted 25th best Solo ever in America, and 20th best Solo ever in the United Kingdom, for his playing on 'Aqualung', won a Grammy Award in 1988, playing on the album: ‘Crest of a Knave’. 'I suspect there may be a Jethro Tull t shirt in the audience!', said Barre, who played a mix including The Beatles 'Eleanor Rigby'. 'Jeth to Tully was a Blues Band in the beginning and that's what I'm trying to get back to', said Barre, who also performed 'Crossroads' 'Many years ago Robert Johnson created a benchmark 'Crossroads',' said Barre. 'We have really enjoyed the show. I'm getting a little older. Thank you for a great evening', said Barre, blowing kisses. Barre, who boarded a plane to Italy straight after being on stage in Murcia, performed music from the Jethro Tull years - giving Tull fans and the broader audience the chance to hear tracks - not performed for many years. Barre's band includes Richard Beesley, who has recorded and played with Michael Buble and Mark Ronson and toured with The Stylistics, The Supremes and Temptations.

San Javier 'Dance to the Music'! DEBUTING at the 2015 XVIII San Javier Jazz Festival Larry Graham - recognized as the inventor of the electric bass slap technique fronting Larry Graham & Graham Central Station got the 1,500 crowd dancing to the music! 'San Javier you really love the music...the funk...love that jam!', said Graham, a big influence of the legend Prince. Texas born Larry, the soul and funk, legendary singer-bassist, notably played bass for Sly & The Family Stone during 1967-72. 'Ve came to Spain especially for you, we've been waiting for so long', saidGraham, who became one of Jehovah's Witnesses, and is credited with introducing Prince to the faith. In 1998, Larry Graham recorded a solo album, in collaboration with Prince. The album was co-arranged and co-produced by Prince. 'There's a lot of love out there and we're so happy to be here. We love you. I'm happy about the weather too, in Copenhagen it was raining!', said Larry, who has toured with Prince since the late nineties and has appeared with Prince on the international stage with the 'Purple Rain' icon in recent years. Larry, who told the audience he was influenced by his mother, performed noteworthy songs 'Can't stand the Rain', 'Roller Coaster' and the iconic hit 'Dance to the Music'. 'I want to thank you so much. I was in Sly and The Family Stone and I played Woodstock in front of 500,000 people. We don't have 500,000 here but you know how to Jam. Let's go back in time...let's Dance to the Music!,' said Larry. 'Thank you for letting me be myself again', said Larry, who also had the crowd in raptures to Prince's '1999'.

Her o C op S t ops R una wa y S t olen Truck Officers from the Guardia Civil have recovered a stolen articulated lorry in Salamanca which contained tobacco and stolen goods valued at around 150,000 euro. The officers received a report of a robbery from a service station at Pedrosillo el Ralo at around 05:00 on Tuesday. As a patrol attended the scene the attending officers witnessed a refrigerated lorry fleeing the scene and upon seeing the patrol the truck almost hit one of the patrols. After joining the A-62 in the Valladolid direction it became apparent that the truck driver was aware of officers in pursuit and abandoning the vehicle by jumping from it and fleeing on foot, leaving the truck moving and out of control. Fearing for the safety of other road users a patrol car carried out a maneuver to allow one of the officers to climb into the moving truck, stopping the vehicle before it could cause further incidents. The officers then discovered that the truck had been stolen that morning from an industrial area in Villares de la Reina and was loaded with boxes of cigarettes and other items stolen from another truck that was parked nearby. An investigation is underway to identify the suspects of the robbery.

Distraction Crash Causes Minor Damage A passenger car crashed into the back of a vehicle in Boiro, a municipality in the province of A Coruña in the autonomous community of Galicia, with the Guardia Civil immediately on the scene to ensure everybody was safe. The reason for the prompt attention was that the vehicle that was hit from behind was a liveried Guardia Civil vehicle. The incident occurred at around 15:00 on Tuesday afternoon on Calle Principal, near to the town hall, but as the traffic was moving at walking pace nobody was injured. The initial investigation suggests that the driver of the rear vehicle had become distracted, resulting in the crash. Distractions are one of the three major contributing factors to road traffic incidents, along with inappropriate speed and alcohol and drugs. In this case, everybody involved were lucky.

Pilgrim Flasher Patrol Officers from the local police in Ames have disguised themselves as pilgrims in order to catch an exhibitionist reported for lewd behaviour along the religiously important Camino de Santiago. Responding to complaints from walkers that a male had been seen on numerous occasions “performing obscene gestures and acts of exhibitionism” along the route. Unable to locate or identify the man, the police decided to set a trap by pretending to be pilgrims and in a very short time witnessed hat they had been warned about. The police identified themselves to the man and warned him of the consequences of his actions, and the added seriousness should such actions be performed in the presence of children or those with mental disabilities.

TERRORISM IN SPAIN

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) continue to issue warnings on foreign travel by British Nationals. Currently they still regard Spain as high risk and advise both tourists and foreign nationals who might be resident in Spain to be aware of such risks and keep themselves alert at all times. Experts have not only detected a greater number of references to Spain in online conversations within radical Islamic circles, but the gravity of the violence expressed in these messages is also increasing. As a result they say that there is a

high threat from terrorism. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in those places visited by foreigners. The Spanish authorities take measures to protect visitors, but they stress that you should be vigilant and follow the instructions of the local authorities. There is considered to be a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals, from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. You should be vigilant at this time. The general sense of alarm in Europe and the fact that the

Islamic caliphate recently observed its first anniversary also contributed to Spanish authorities’ decision to increase the terror alert level in the country. In 2015, Spanish police have disrupted a number of groups suspected of recruiting individuals to travel to Syria and Iraq arresting a total of 47 people so far this year for jihadist terrorism. Some of those arrested expressed an intention to carry out attacks in Europe. However Spanish authorities believe that a number of Spanish nationals have successfully travelled to Syria and Iraq.

SEX SLAVE ARRESTS IN LANZAROTE A Spanish woman has been arrested by the National Police in Arrecife (Lanzarote) after she allegedly attempted to enlist a number of young females who she was said to be recruiting as sex slaves for the Mujahideen and the Islamic State.

She tried to convince them to travel to Syria and Iraq where, on arrival, they would be forced to join ISIS terrorists ranks. Much of the activity was carried out over the internet so Police are now focused on establishing the exact number of children with whom she was in contacted, and how many of them have already travelled

to other areas controlled by the Daesh. Counterterrorism sources said that the woman detained was regularly in direct contact with members of the Islamic state in Syria and operating out of the Canary Islands by express order of the 'Caliphate'. The operation is by no means the first against Daesh networks that are attracting women from Spain. Last December, in Ceuta, Melilla, Barcelona and in the Moroccan town of Castillejos three men and four women were arrested, accused of recruiting twelve women which they sent to Syria as sex slaves. And then in February of this year, another network was broken up in Melilla and Catalonia whose primary mission was to seek Muslim adolescents with problems or from dysfunctional families and convince them to migrate to areas controlled by the Daesh. On 7 March in Barcelona airport a woman was detained with her three year old daughter as she attempted to travel to Turkey to join IS making the number arrested so far this year for jihadist terrorism in Spain to 47.

NATO BIG GUNS IN VALENCIA

The largest NATO exercise in over a decade, Trident Juncture, will be taking place this Autumn in Spain, Portugal and Italy. The alliance will be using the opportunity to test new training dynamics and to determine methods by which greater training effectiveness can be integrated into future exercises. The final coordinating conference, involving about 900 military personnel from 20 countries, all experts in different military aspects of land, sea and air, was held in Valencia last week.

Lt. Col. Alfredo Campo said that almost 30,000 troops are expected to take part in the exercise which will take place in multiple locations across the Alliance, lasting for 2 weeks, and getting underway on 28 September. Although the exercise is not focused on any specific danger he added that NATO sees two "threats" right now. One on the southern flank, in the Middle East with jihadism, and another to the east of Europe. As a result NATO troops must be prepared to "cope with any threat" and "ensure the security and freedom of its citizens," he said.

ON YER BIKE! 'BICI-BAR' - OR A QUIET PINT & TAPAS - DOWN AT THE LOCAL By ANDREW ATKINSON 'ONE for the road' was never a good idea - unless you happen to be on a BEER-BIKE! Or is it? Beer-Bikes ('Bici-Bars') have hit the streets in recent years in Quesada and Albacete in Spain with 'cyclists' enjoying a pint or two - as they merrily ride by. Now in Amsterdam 'beer bikes' are set to be banned - after Friends of Amsterdam City set up a petition signed by more than 6,000 people. “The beer bike is a source of annoyance for the residents of the city centre", said a spokesperson for Friends of Amsterdam City. Complaints vary - from having beer thrown at people - to that of being spat on. Not to mention people allegedly urinating in the street! However Beer-Bike owner Ard Karsten said there have only been 24 complaints since January - and the beer bikes have made more than 1,500 trips in Amsterdam. Now 'Bici-Bars' are once again reportedly under review in Amsterdam. In 2010 in Amsterdam Beer-bikes were no longer allowed on the streets after a ruling by a judge.

The mobile, pedal-powered bars can transport between 10 and 20 people. And while peddling 'passengers' can drink as much beer as they want, the designated driver does not drink any alcohol. The Beer-Bar 'BiciBars' - are popular with stag and hen parties. However in 2009 an accident involving a BeerBike in Amsterdam saw three women injured - when the beer bike they had rented for a hen party was too tall for a bike tunnel they tried to enter! Reports state the Beer-Bikes' revellers cause a nuisance - and create a traffic hazard. And in Germany in 2010 a Court ruling issued a clampdown on the "Beer-Bikes" - deeming them dangerous and a nuisance to other road users. Beer-Bikes - which hail from the Netherlands - are also known as

'pedal-pubs'.

In Albacete 'Bicibar Albacete' host birthday and private parties, and promotional events. And in Quesada visitors can hire a BiciBar. Whatever happened to a beer down at the local? I'll always drink to that! One for the road - on a BeerBar? Andrew Atkinson would rather have a beer and tapas down at the local.

BE A LIVE IN C ARER IN THE UK

Live-in Care is a full-time homecare solution where a Carer is required to live with the customer in their own home seven days a week and although they will have breaks Carers are responsible for the customer’s wellbeing the rest of the time. For the customer, Live-in Care means they can stay at home in familiar, relaxed surroundings, supported by someone who undertakes all the duties detailed in an individually designed care plan. It’s the perfect solution for many families. Many carers enjoy this one-to-one personal home care vocation as it allows them to concentrate on one person at a time and unlike other care environments, Live-in Carers have the time to build a relationship and maintain a high standard of care. Whilst care is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding jobs you can have, it’s also demanding, challenging and comes with a huge amount of personal responsibility. Live-in Carers in particular need to truly care for others; it’s a great way to earn a living but the job isn’t about money, it’s about making a difference to others. Spanish based Live-in Carers find that, not only is Live-in Care a rewarding career but it also fits well with their Spanish and UK lifestyles. Many ex-pats will have Live-in Care jobs in the UK for a few weeks at a time to supplement their income whilst maintaining links with family and friends, before returning back to Spain with many reporting a perfect balance between work and rest. Live-in Care placements are very varied with people with lots of different needs. Carers might be particularly interested in supporting

someone that has dementia which can be the most challenging and rewarding placements. Or they might enjoy looking after a young adult – perhaps a student at university that has a spinal injury and needs help with their personal care? The Carer is also there to help them enjoy the great day to day life of being a student! Placements available include a vast range from customers who just want a friend to customers who might have had a stroke, have Parkinson’s, or someone that is coming to the end of their life and wants to die with dignity at home. In each placement it’s the relationship between customer and Carer that makes a real difference. The urgent need for care is often placed upon families when hospital discharge is reliant on having the appropriate level of care and support in place. A Live-in Carer can help with recuperation, convalescence and rehabilitation, working alongside District Nurses and Occupational Therapists when health can be at its most fragile, building confidence and strength, day by day. Carers can also give medical support including catheterisation, convene, PEG and suppositories to name a few. Becoming a Live-in Carer is proving an attraction option for people in Spain that want to make a difference to others. There’s a new recruitment event with Helping Hands Home Care in July at Central Comercial Sophia, La Regia, (Cabo Roig) Orihuela Costa For further information contact 965 32 3667 – 685 406 881 or Email her at susan.edwards@helpinghands.co.uk

Tim Vine’s absence is keenly felt in Not Going Out, but Hugh Dennis’s addition to the cast is a shrewd move – he fills a similar comedy foil/sounding board role for those pub chats. But he has a delicious wryness, too, which softens the blokey stuff that goes on elsewhere. Tonight he’s called on, by a very tortuous route, to help Lee torpedo a surprise

anniversary party that Lucy is hosting for her parents. Her terrifyingly imperious dad (the magnificent Geoffrey Whitehead, who surely should be knighted for services to both television and radio comedy) hates surprises, while her mum just wants some fun. 00:20 Would I Lie to You? Rob Brydon is back in the host’s chair for the seventh series of the comedy panel show. And, as ever, David Mitchell and Lee Mack are the lightning-quick team captains. By Pat McEwan Congratulations to San Miguel Mavericks and San Miguel Sheriffs who both came second in their respective VCL leagues. The Sheriffs only losing top spot by one point!! The Mavericks had their hardest game of the season playing at Quesada and only picked up 2 points, thanks to the pairs game of Pat McEwan and Mick Rogers. The Sheriffs had a good win picking up 10 points. Well done to all who played, especially in such extreme heat!! In the Southern League, the Christians played their last game of the season at home against San Luis Wellingtons losing 10-2. Very well done to Alan and Sheila Booth and Sue Milner for winning 23-10 and hard lines to Ken Hope, Joe Getgood and Alan Dobie who went into the last end one up but dropped two, losing the game by one point. The Moors have done well in the league, but the Christians have had a terrible but enjoyable season. Next year we take it more seriously!! The Australians Pairs finished this week, the winners being Cliff Plaisted, Dave Greenland and Barry Bright. Runners up Ken Hope, Gail Wiltshire and Peter Masters. A friendly competition enjoyed by all. The 2 Wood Triples start on Wednesday morning 9 for 9.30. Contact Noel Davis for further information. Remember the WASPS are still playing Wednesday afternoons, be there for 1.30, for 5 euros you can bowl all afternoon, meet new friends and have an enjoyable time. Shoes, woods and free tuition available if needed. HORADADA BOWLS CLUB By John Bailey On Wednesday, we travelled to San Luis for our last VCL game of this season. It was very hot and made for uncomfortable play, in these conditions. So thanks to all players for managing to complete their games. I hope you were still able to enjoy it. We have not been able to improve our league position during these last few games, and today was no better. Winning the rinks only to gain 2 points, well done Team. Loosing all the other games, gave Sal Luis 10 pts with 99 shots. Horadada having just the 2 pts and 59 shots. My thanks to all those who have played over these games. Why we have not achieved better results, I find difficult to understand. I hope you all enjoy the break, until the start of the winter league. Remember, Club Memberships are due for renewal 1st September 2015. WE WELCOME NEW MEMBERS TO JOIN US AT HORADADA BOWLS CLUB.See our website for info. horadadabowlsclub.com

Vistabella Bowls Report Sponsored by Autos Direct, TV Choice and Venture Fleet. By Lynne Bishop The only way is up! Both of our VCL teams are on the move, the Red Division 2 Vikings have won their league and look forward to the competition of the Division 1 next year. Our Green Division 3 Saxons confirmed their win last week and earned their place in the Division 2 next year. This is a tremendous achievement and we can only say 'Bring it on! ' Thank you and well done to the team Captains/Selectors for their hard work and selections of players and not forgetting the players themselves. The VCL Vikings travelled up to Monte Mar to try to seal their top of the league spot playing the Lords and thank the Lord our nearest contenders for the title the San Miguel Moors didn't get the result they needed from their game to go ahead of us. Winning the points for the Vikings were Lynne Bishop (ladies singles) 21-5. Steve Pearson (men's singles) 21-17. Derek Stevenson, Maggie Furness, Sandra Burrows & Charlie Watkins (rinks) 21-13. Points, Vikings 8 (83) - 4 (80) Lords. Congratulations! In the PREMIER TWENTY it was a matter of 'to play or not to play?' After a lot of deliberations the decision was to play in 40c of heat! Momentarily sitting at the top of the league we were aiming for as many points as possible from our game against San Miguel. The game was incredibly close and resulted in a draw which was only fair. Martin Foulcer playing Singles (H) 21-11. Steve Pearson & Neil Burrows playing Pairs (H) drew 13-13. Triples, Tony French, Les Barber & Brian Dunn (A) 14-14. Rinks, Jenny Chaplin, Beryl Regan, Dave Chaplin & Mike Regan (H) 19-12 and Olwyn Ratcliffe, Sue Norris, Charlie Watkins & Barry Norris (A) also had a draw of 15-15. We did win the long game...just. Points, Vistabella 9 (125) - 9 (122) San Miguel. Two more games to play, fingers crossed! SABA. The Fairways had a bye this week so were hoping to hang onto their 2nd position in the Spitfire league, unfortunately for us San Luis did the business in Friday's game and overtook the Fairways with one point. Congratulations to the Champions, Quesada Blemheims. The Hurricane league Greener's were at Greenlands playing the Glosters, a good win of ten points to end their season. Well done to Leslie Prockter, Avril Kendall & Brian Prockter 24-20. Sheila Cox, Jeff Neves & Mike Cox 19-17. Pauline Rafferty, Sue & Barry Norris 17-15. HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY VILLAMARTIN No pressure for Hub members this week as the Grand Prix made way for a two person team “Texas Scramble”. Chosen venue for this alternative discipline was the Roda course at San Javier. The draw, conducted 24 hours earlier, paired Paul Bradley and Christian Attwood, who were immediately installed as pre-match favourites with a handicap allowance of 6.25 shots. Second favourites, Dave Lethaby and John Stephenson effectively received a handicap worth one shot less than the favourites of 7.0, but not enough to overcome eventual winners Laurie Brain and Ashley Lee, who benefited from a handicap allowance of 9.5 to subtract from a one over gross score of 73. Their efforts of 13 pairs and 2 birdies, debatably eclipsed second placed Lethaby and Stephenson´s efforts of 11 pairs, 2 birdies and a fine eagle on the relatively easy Par 5, 486 yard, 5th, to finish on a level par 72. Favourites Bradley and Attwood finished a creditable 4th with a gross score of 76. Hub´s next event is at Las Colinas for the Society´s 8th Grand Prix event, currently led by Warren Harris. Dave Lethaby´s expectations of retaining the GP title take a blow as he will not be available for the

next four events. Still expect Dave to figure in the top five, but I am afraid No. 1 is out of the question for 2015. Register for Las Colinas (Thursday 23rd July) at the Hub, spaces are limited therefore book early. RESULTS: “Photo Lounge” N.T.P. Hole 7 Brian Fente, Hole 15 Steve Matthews, Hole 18 Chris Attwood Texas Scramble: 1st Laurie Brain and Ashley Lee, gross 73 net 63.5 2nd Dave Lethaby and John Stephenson, gross 72, net 65.0 3rd Warren Harris and Sharon Pearson, gross 78, net 68.5

PADDY’S POINT GOLF SOCIETY AT ALICANTE GC Although our numbers were less than usual it did not stop us having a great day playing on a course in superb condition. Travel by coach gave us the perfect excuse to partake of a few 'refreshments' before leaving for home. Back at the bar we enjoyed a lovely meal and, of course, a few more drinks. Thank you Hazel and all the staff at Paddy's Point for bringing us back to life after a very very hot day. NTP hole 3 - Derek Burgess, hole 8 - Terry Fitzgerald, hole 12 Terry Fitzgerald, hole 15 - Paul Healy, hole - 17 Rory Lee. As

Happy Days Golf Society By Lubbertus The club visited La Serena Golf for its game on 8th July on what proved to be a very hot day with temperatures well over 30 degrees. However the golfers were spared the courses normally prevailing Levante wind which can make play difficult or even easier at some holes, there being no real wind to speak of on the day. The course is shorter than many in the area, but being very flat and open with water in 16 of the 18 holes and huge bunkers at many, the course provides holes suitable for the big hitters and the thinking players. Because of the conditions and the heat, it was decided to play a pairs tournament, the result being that the differing skill requirements of each hole meant that many of the old faithful names appeared on the score sheet with Kedrick Rhodes and Kevin Barratt finishing first with 64.2 and Roddy Bruce and Steve Dixon second on a very close 65.6. Some way behind on 69.2 were Jack Sheridan and Pete Curley, all regularly on the score sheet. However in fourth place appeared a new name, that of Mark Spurway, who with Dale Wood finished very close with a creditable 69.8. The excellent club house at La Serena provided a very welcome respite from the heat and openness of the course, as did the Happy Days Society’s spiritual 19th hole at the Marinasol Restaurant at Cabo Roig where Steve and Maz provided the players with a welcome buffet. The Society’s next match will be at the Mar Menor Golf Course on 21st July 2015. New members or just those seeking more information about a very welcoming golf society where friendship is as important as golf, should contact Steve Dixon, or any of the staff, at the Marinasol Restaurant at Cabo Roig. All comers of all levels are very welcome.

there were no 2's the pot will carried forward to the next outing. Longest Drive - Terry Fitzgerald. Best Guest - Thomas Colton. 3rd place - Patsy Long 33pts, 2nd place - Willie Crangle 37pts, Pub Champion - Terry Fitzgerald 40pts. 17th hole (par 3) was Les Henderson. Bronze Class in 2nd place was Colin Clarke with 27 points. Bronze Class in 1st place was Barry Shawyer with 30 points Silver Class 2nd place was Steve Cottle with a score of 30 points. Silver Class 1st place was Les Thwaites with a score of 37 points. And for those of you that are ‘younger’, just ask your parents. Do you remember those Saturday afternoon matinees at the ‘flicks’ where you went to see your film favourites such as John Wayne, Alan Ladd and Randolph Scott in the good old western movies? Although the films were different, the theme was the same, boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl again and all while fighting the bad guys. Now I want you to use your imagination again. You should consider your golf swing and thoughts to be like a western movie. And the good guys are fighting the bad guys and in this case the ‘girl’ is enjoyment success and satisfaction. Still with me? In terms of your ’swing’, the good guys are the key fundamentals for good golf of posture, grip and alignment and for your ‘swing’ the bad guys are usually too strong a right hand grip, bad posture over the ball, poor alignment, not releasing the club from the top and deceleration of the club head. All of these will cause inconsistent and poor golf resulting in the, slices, hooks, pulls, duffs, thins, shanks and total misses that you see every day on the golf course. In terms of your ‘mind’ the bad guys are negative thoughts, bad attitude, lack of focus, over stating your own abilities, low confidence, poor preparation, anger and fear and the ‘mental’ good guys are a good attitude, positive thoughts, relaxation, calmness, good preparation, goal setting, control of anger, concentration, course strategy and most importantly visualisation. So there it is, your overall golf game is like your favourite western movie, make sure that the good guys beat the bad guys and win the girl, which in this case is success, satisfaction or just plain enjoyment. Will this be easy? The answer is no but do not be scared or afraid because help is at hand and if you contact a suitable coach the ‘sheriff’ will arrive on his Andalusian stallion, complete with silver star to drive the bad guys out of town. Go on you know it makes sense and as they say in the movies “a man has got to do what a man has got to do”. Go ahead and make my day.

Today I was blessed with playing with a Brummy, who when it suits him is a little hard of hearing and a Swede with a dodgy eye who by his own admission doesn’t play his best golf at La Finca. Having started our round from the 10th, due to maintenance being carried out on the front 9, we had hardly reached the 11th fairway when the Brummy began to give the Swede words of encouragement, by the time we had reached the 12th tee the Swede asked if I could translate for the Brummy as he couldn’t understand a word, I replied, just nod or shake your head because he can’t hear you to which the Brummy replied “I heard that”. You can probably imagine what I went through for the

next 4 ? hours and upon reaching the clubhouse all I needed was a couple of paracetamol, seriously though thank you to Alan and Arne for giving me an entertaining day. The new Green Keeper continues to make improvements to this course; his latest work includes putting some shape into the fairways which makes it more pleasing on the eye and more difficult to find the short stuff. His recent improvements on the greens can now be seen, they are fast and true. After having said that you would have thought that the scoring would be poor, especially playing in 37º! Well the truth is that in either category, to win a prize you needed to play to your handicap. Today we welcomed 5 visitors to join us, 1 of which has now become a member, so the runner up in the visitors’ category was Dave Smith with 28pts. While Gary Seddon took 1st place just 1 point better. In the Silver category, the outright winner was Carsten Landaas with 39 points, this provoked a few comments from his fellow Norwegians especially Ole Rong, there seems to be a fierce competition going on between the two of them, with Ole wanting to know what Carsten’s new handicap will be before he plays him again tomorrow. 2nd, 3rd and 4th place were decided by Lower handicap as Mick Kennedy, Alex Goslan and Gunn Handeland all had 36 points. Now when should you impose a penalty for the score cards being returned late? The scorer was waiting for just 4 cards and the group had been seen in the bar, when asked about the cards, Ian Parkinson said that he had left them on the buggy for Les Wilton to bring in, where were they? Still on the buggy and as their scores were not, shall we say going to win a prize they didn’t seem too enthusiastic about going to get them but another member of that 4 ball was keen to get them, Hans Arvesen had scored 38 points and didn’t want to miss out on his prize, well we are a friendly Society so no penalty was awarded. In 2nd place was another new member Steve Matthews with 38 points but higher handicap, 3rd and 4th were also decided by handicap with Chris Gray and Roger Nilsen both returning 36 points. Photo: Silver category winners. Our next Competition is at La Marquesa on the 15th July. This comp will be followed by a meal in the clubhouse restaurant. QUESADA GOLF SUPER LEAGUE SUMMER COMPETITION The organising members of the League arrived at Font del Llop early to a clear warm day. The course, we knew, was in excellent condition. This being the competition’s third year we were once again hoping for some big scores. The players, having paid their green fees, took to the tee at their allotted times and we were all ready for an excellent day’s golf. The number of players were lower than in the past years, nevertheless as the day wore on it was apparent that the scores would be high. In the end it was a close run match with two at 46 and one at 45. The winners could only be separated by the lowest handicaps, as you see from the results below. WINNERS: Barry Roherig/Steve Davis 46 Points (Lowest H/Cap) (SMGS) RUNNERS-UP : Ron Stonehouse/Noel Bannon 46 Points (SMGS) NTP's Par 3's: 3rd : David Gray (Elite Golf Society. 8th : David Gray (Elite Golf Society. 12th : Alistair Kent (SMGS. 16th : Phil de Lacy (SMGS. 17th : Tony Smale (SMGS). TORREVIEJA NEW SIGNINGS TO FACE CORDOBA

Things are starting to take shape at CD Torrevieja, for they have now retained 7 players from last season, and made 4 new signings. In addition to Oscar, Vicente, Jorge, Burguillos and Carrasco, full backs Eddy and Adrian have agreed to wear the famous white and blue shirt for another season. Manager Pedreno has also been busy in the transfer market, bringing in no less than 4 good players. Ex Torry favourite Luis Carlos, joins from Novelda, and will be given more freedom to express his creative ability this time around. A striker has been signed from Horadada, and he's a Brit! Lewis Allen who scored 7 goals for the Reds last season. Pedreno knows Lewis well having played for Horadada under his tenure in his early career before leaving to establish himself on the big stage with Elche. Welcome Lewis, and hopefully you will be given the service to add to the goals scored last season. Left back Edu Mesus arrives from

Huercal Overa CD, who last season reached the playoffs for Segunda B. Finally, a big welcome to Rives, who's a big experienced central defender, having previously played for sides in both Tercera and Segunda B level. On Sat 18 Jul, ko 8pm, Torry have a mouth watering pre season friendly against Cordoba. Cordoba will arrive at Vicente Garcia Stadium having recently been relegated from La Liga, but no doubt will be looking at making a quick return from Segunda A. Entrance for this match will be 10 euros, or only 5 euros for those having previously purchased a 2015/2016 season ticket. This offer will also apply to the friendlies on Fri 24 Jul v Hull City, and Fri 7 Aug v Hercules.

Quesada Golf Society Last Wednesday the Society traveled down to the Mar Menor to play what many consider to be the best of the ex-Polaris World courses, Mar Menor. The course was in excellent condition although the sand in some of the green-side bunkers was quite compact and those who had the mis-fortune to find them experienced difficulty in getting out of them and landing a shot near the pin. The turn-out was dis-appointing with 17 players contesting an individual stableford competition. 7 players had dropped out within a few days of the game. Not sure why but it may have been the high temperatures. It was hot out there on the golf course and during the round litres of water and isotonic drinks were downed. In first place was a canny Scotsman Gordon McGregor who had a superb round and headed the leader board with 38 points. The axe-man Big John will delight in making a sizable cut to his handicap. In second place was Leeds lad Brent Hollings with 33 points. In third place was “chatterbox” Darryll Wright who would have scored more than the 31 points returned if it hadn´t been for the green-side bunkers and his inability to get out of them cleanly. In fourth place was west countryman Ron Perkins with 30 points. The “Nearest the Pin” winners were Darryll Wright, Big John Dunnions son Big Stephen who gets his height from his dad but not his good looks. Stephen almost won a couple more nearest the pins but was just pipped to them on both occasions by fellow Mancunian David Johnson. There were a couple of games in the annual knock-out competition with Lord Ian Fogerty beating Paul Flanaghan with a few holes to go and Big Roy Kavanagh beating David Johnson in a close fought encounter which was decided on the final hole. The presentations were made in the hotel at the golf course after the game after which the weary golfers returned home probably firstly for a dip in the pool followed by more liquid refreshment. The next game is an individual stableford at Las Colinas on Wednesday 22 July. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the Membership Secretary Les Pancott on 966 71 6723.

MAN CITY SQUADS ARRIVE AT PINATAR ARENA EDS and u18 squads are now in Spain as preparations intensify ahead of the new season. Patrick Vieira’s side will be joined by the club’s first and second year scholars for the ten day camp in a move that has benefited players and

management for the past two seasons. Vieira told mcfc.co.uk: “We have chosen to go to Spain because we managed to find one of the best places for pre-season. “Mark Allen and his team have found the Pinatar Arena which has excellent facilities and is able to accommodate two teams – u21s and u18s – so we are going there because we will have everything we need to make sure we have a really good pre-season.” The club’s philosophy of challenging youngsters to play up the age groups, combined with the introduction of the u19 UEFA Youth League, means that many players will switch between the u18s and EDS during the forthcoming season. As a result, Vieira and u18 Head Coach Jason Wilcox have seized the opportunity to base both squads at the same pre-season camp. Added Vieira: “It is working really well because we have players going up and down. The u21s is really an u19 team with some u18s, and they play in the FA Youth Cup with Jason, and they play some u21 and UEFA Youth League with me. “It is really important to make players understand that whether they play with me or Jason, what is important is to perform. “We are one team and it is important for them to understand how close the u18s and u21s are, and for them to get to know each other as well and enjoy the pre-season.” The two teams will have the opportunity to test themselves against local opposition, as well as face each other in an in-house game between City XIs. Following the in-house match on Wednesday 15 July, the u18s will take on Real Murcia on Saturday 18 July, while both teams have a match against Elche scheduled for Tuesday 21 July. Vieira declared: “When you have 10 days of pre-season there is nothing you can think of except hard work. Pre-season is really important because it dictates the season ahead, and you work really hard. “We train twice a day and play games, and it is important for players not to get injured and not miss one day, because that can have an impact on preparation. We need the players to be focused, to concentrate and work hard.” www.mcfc.co.uk
