The parade was held on the main square of San Javier airbase before which His Majesty was greeted by the new president of the Autonomous Community of the Region Murcia, Pedro Antonio Sánchez López. The King then presented the warrants to the New Air Force lieutenants, 87 of which were enlisted into the General and Quartermaster Corps. Of the remainder, 55 were commissioned into the Corps of Engineers with the rest joining the Military and Legal Corps, the Military Music Corps, the Military Health Corps and the Military Intervention Corps. According to the Director of the Air Academy it was a particularly historic day as it was the very first time that engineering students were able to add a military degree in civil engineering and industrial organization in the 72 year life of the academy. A short tribute was paid to those who have given their lives to Spain after which the national flag was paraded by the newly commissioned officers in front of the Royal Couple. Among the other dignitaries present at the ceremony were the Defense Minister, Pedro Morenés Eulate and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Air Force General Francisco Javier Garcia Arnaiz. After a presentation to the king by the Director General of the Air Academy, Colonel Juan Pablo Sanchez de Lara, a prayer of thanksgiving was said by the by the Military Vicar General of the Air Force. There followed a fly past by a formation of four aircraft E-26 piloted by students from the Eagle Patrol Squadron, once again in tribute to those who gave their lives for Spain, and then a second fly past, this time by the Eagle Patrol itself which coincided with a 21 gun salute, and the national anthem.

CHARGES DROPPED FOLLOWING POLICE CRUCIFIXION PROTEST Officers from the Policia Locale who took part in the mock crucifixion outside a third storey window of the Torrevieja Town Hall during last June’s Plenary Meeting have been told that all disciplinary charges have been dropped. Torrevieja magistrate Juan Lopez Hoyo released a statement last week ruling that no further action will be taken as there had been no specific requirement for the demonstrators to actually obtain permission. The protest saw an actor employed you the officers tied to a cross depicting a crucifixion and lifted in a crane outside the Ayuntamiento while a council meeting was in session. The former PP Government led by Eduardo Dolon were keen to follow the prosecution through as they said that the eight officers involved had previously been involved in a number of other peaceful protests so the ruling will come as a huge relief for the officers themselves and for their many supporters who publically applauded the resourcefulness of this particular demonstration. The Public Union CCOO also praised the magistrate’s decision saying that the officers were doing nothing more than peacefully protesting against their working conditions which is their absolute human right. They added that they were delighted at a recent announcement by the new Torrevieja mayor that he is willing to open

dialogue with their representatives with the hope of reaching a mutual agreement. The mayor, meanwhile, announced on Tuesday that he has formed a ‘Working Group’ which will look at the police grievances. He has done this to mitigate as much as possible the situation in this service, "because I understand that it is time to make a voltage drop because tempers are frayed by bitter confrontation that ultimately cannot bring anything good to the service". Dolon said that the group will be made up of the Director General of the Police, a local inspector of and a member of each of the five unions that currently represent the force. He will also join the group from time to time as will the Cllr for Police, in order to keep abreast of developments as well as any negotiations and the agreements reached. He says that he has given the group 3 months to reach agreement. On average the police are between 30 and 40 officers below strength, equivalent to twenty five percent of the workforce, "which causes many problems which can often result in the officers being subjected to unnecessary danger. The mayor said that "the current situation is alarming and unsustainable and must be resolved as a matter of some urgency,” stressing that “efforts should be made to effect full dialogue to overcome conflicts and above all reduce tensions and bring peace, because the situation is more serious than many people would appreciate."

LET’S GET THINGS GOING ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA If you find a problem that you would like the Orihuela Costa authorities to deal with you must first of all make sure that they know about it. You can do this by taking a photo of the offending item or issue and sending it, with a short explanation, to the email address:

residentes@orihuela.es. We will shortly have a new council in place so let’s make sure that they are fully aware of any problems that need addressing, then they have no excuse!

The mayor has now formed a Working Group to look at police grievances

FRENCH DEATH AT PEDREGRUER BULL RUN

French tourists died last Monday after being gored by a bull during the bullrun in Pedreguer just north of Alicante. The tragedy occurred on one of the morning runs during the celebration of the 'Bous Pedreguer' when one of the bulls charged at and gored the man, identified as LO, who was experiencing the event with some friends The confrontation caused serious injuries which were immediately attended to by doctors who were on duty at the event. Unfortunately the man died shortly after the incident. The bullfights planned for later in the week were immediately cancelled as a mark of respect and in mourning. The mayor of Pedreguer expressed his "support and condolences" to the family and friends of the deceased, and reminded residents and visitors wishing to participate in these that they must only do so "responsibly and in accordance with the safety standards ". Meanwhile in Pamplona at the seventh and penultimate ‘Running of the Bulls’ featuring five bulls from the Domingo Hernández Martín farm the run was the fastest of the week taking just two minutes and 12 second. However the ru wasn’t without incident as two participants were seriously gored: one in the leg and another in the abdomen. A third runner was taken to hospital with cuts and bruises.

Spain stages more than 3000 bull running festivals annually and there is perhaps no stranger event than the one held in Denia, the ‘Bous a la mar’ event which is held as part of the celebrations to mark La Santisma Sangre in the town, the veneration of the blood of Christ. Two main bull-related events take place during these days. The first is the running of the young bulls that takes place every day of the week, starting in the higher part of town, a square called La Glorieta, up to the makeshift bullring set up at the village’s port. The bullring is split in half: the first half is the port ground, while the other half of the bullring is actually the sea. This is where the proper Bous a la Mar takes place local youngsters try to make them fall into the sea. Once the bulls are in the water, along with many of the participants, a boat guides them back to the shore. This year, however, the ‘Bous’ was targeted by the animal rights group ‘Pacma’ who maintain that many of the bulls die needlessly by either drowning or of heart attacks during the run, such is the fert that they are subjected to. The group says that such celebrations are inhumane and totally unnecessary and they call for the Alicante authorities to support only those events that are ‘ethical and responsible’. After some minor scuffles involving the group the policia locale were called in to restore order.

DRONES TO BE USED TO MONITOR FIRE HAZARDS Fighting fires this summer in the mountains of Orihuela will undoubtedly intensify according to the Councillor for the Environment, Miguel Angel Fernandez. After the destruction caused by the beetle 'Tomicus destruens' which has left the vast majority of the Orihuela pine forest dry, the possibility of fires completely devastating the region during the summer months is a very real concern. As such the councillor has said that he wants to rent a drone which he will use to monitor the areas of particular concern. The drone of course will be unmanned and will fly over the Sierra de Orihuela ensuring that surveillance is continuous. Where there is evidence of a fire the response will be immediate, the authorities will be alerted and steps will be taken to neutralise any threat. Such actions will be a major step forward and will almost certainly result in far less damage being

caused to the forestation within the local area. Fernandez advocates performing a "continuous monitoring service" in order that we can avoid any disasters. He said that he is convinced that these measures will mitigate many of the problems that are likely to occur in the summer. "We are looking at all the possible ways to collaborate with the Emergency services. It is all about keeping the mountains out of danger. And as they gain in popularity drones are reducing in size and in cost all the time with the most recent models priced as little as 4,000 euros. A small price to pay for the millions lost annually through forest fires during the intense summer season In terms of creating additional firebreaks in the more densely forested areas some work by the regional forestry administration is also underway such as the felling of pines in many areas of the Orihuela mountains.

CAR T AGENA MA YOR RECALLS CITY HISTOR Y A reproduction of Cartagena’s Flag of Independence, first raised in the city in 1873, was again flying high outside the Town Hall as the mayor opened the celebrations marking 142 years since the city first declared itself a ‘Canton’.

events in which milestones could once again be visited and history relived in Cartagena, with the aim of publicizing the city to its many visitors.

At the beginning of the commemoration of a series of historical events yhe mayor said that he wanted to remind residents about it’s past and make them even more conscious of the city’s proud history.

The revolt against the government of the First republic took place on 12 July 1873 but the activists didn’t surrender until 6 months later following the creation of the ‘Canton.’ The city formed a federalist government and was the centre of the Cantonal Revolution as Governmental forces besieged the city for several months.

The mayor raised the flag in front of almost 300 citizens to a background of music provided by the voice of singer David Contreras with "The Cardueli" accompanied on guitar by Borja Baron. He said that this was the first of a series of commemorative

The mayor said that the history of Cartagena should be kept alive and despite the outcome of the 1873 revolt, when many people lost their lives, the people should remember that they come from a stock that was both brave and proud.

NEW AIRPORT PARKING FACILITY OPENS ON TUESDAY The new short-stay, pick-up and drop-off area at AlicanteElche airport will be opened on Tuesday. The improvement work has cost 116,568.48 euro. The new “Exprés” car park will offer 80 places for 15 minutes of free parking and replaces the current open drop-off and collection zones which currently a short stop of 5 minutes but are frequently abused by drivers who leave their vehicles for much longer. However, drivers need to be aware that should you stay longer than 15 minutes in the new zone, you will be charged a fee which is actually higher than if you were to use the traditional airport car park. The new car park will also mean that vehicle movements are recorded, which will please the legal taxi drivers as the information could be used to clamp down on pirate and illegal operators. There is also no other alternative available for dropping off and picking up, thus providing even more control and monitoring of vehicle movements around the terminal building. ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

TWITTER TOWN I have to admit it, but I am not a great lover of Twitter. To be honest, I don't really understand it. I can see the point of Facebook, which as an expat has helped me to keep in contact with friends and family that I have not seen for some time. It is great fun reading lively posts, and viewing amusing photos and videos, although I do find the "I'm all hung over this morning" posts and the "Look what I'm eating now" photos a tad irritating. After all, do we really wish to witness the cause of many a stomach upset? Anyway, my favourite posts are of cats and dogs getting up to all sorts of strange antics. I like dolphins too. Although I use Twitter, in the sense that it is automatically linked to my weekly posts, it is not a format that I understand or like. My main gripe is why on earth would someone willingly restrict themselves to such a pathetic number of characters when the English language is so deliciously rich and colourful? It is impossible to say what you really mean in such a pathetically small number of words. I am always surprised that Stephen Fry, who has grown into something of a 'national treasure', has anything to do with it. Yes, I know that many will disagree, but I am just saying... It was therefore with some surprise that friends in Granada recently alerted me to a news item about the activities in a nearby small Spanish town, Jun, which now uses Twitter as a way of administering the city's public services. Indeed, should you enter this small town, you will be greeted by an obelisk in the centre of a roundabout, deco-

rated with the famous Twitter bird logo. The chief Twitterite of the town, Mayor Jose Antonio Rodriguez Salas, has been experimenting with this form of social media for a number of years and now claims that Twitter has allowed the city authorities to eliminate bureaucracy. Full marks to the Mayor, since he claims that all the paperwork is now done on Twitter, and that all 3,500 residents of Jun should have a Twitter account to join in the fun. So far, he has around 600 converts registered with the Town Hall, which allows them to make doctor's appointments, book rooms at the town hall, report crimes, non-functioning street lamps, as well as tweeting about the quality of school lunches. For those who cannot quite grasp the system, Twitter courses are available, allowing residents to take part in town hall meetings, using tweets of course. Apparently, the town's road sweeper is now something of a celebrity too, because he receives many congratulatory tweets appreciating his work. I do wonder how he feels about jobs that are not so well done, but then again, I am all for instant feedback. The police service is something that concerns me since the Mayor proudly proclaims that he has managed to reduce the police force from four to one police officer; I guess that went down a treat with the union. Presumably, the one remaining officer spends all day replying to tweets... Anyway, do it yourself policing is clearly the way forward in Jun, and relatively easy now that Jun has free Wi-Fi Internet access throughout the town. If you do catch a thief, just send a tweet to the town’s one remaining police officer; he will be far too busy to appear in person, but you will get a nice, but brief, reply. Twitter is free, immediate and efficient, which ticked all of the Mayor's boxes for a quality public service. Twitter itself were also keen to get in on the action when they heard about the way that their service was being used, leading to a visit from Twitter's chief data scientist, who was fascinated by the way that Jun was using social media for the public good. He acknowledged that, as

with all good things, not everyone in Jun is willing to take part, which did come as a bit of a blow. Twitter meanwhile, are looking at how Jun's example could be extended to New York, San Francisco, Chicago and, indeed, the World. Whilst I applaud the Mayor's enthusiasm and the development of technology for the social good, I do have some minor concerns about the lack of real social interaction, confidentiality in the case of medical appointments, the reduction of policing to just one man with a phone, but can see the point of immediate reporting of issues, such as the quality of school lunches, as well as congratulating the street cleaner. As for me, all this talk of Twitter has driven me back to my typewriter. Yes, the World is going quietly mad… If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander.com or read his latest book, ‘Escape to the Sun’ (ISBN: 9780957544444). he Minister of Finance, Vicent Soler, has spoken about the future of the Alicante film production complex Ciudad de la Luz and asked if might be possible to renegotiate its sale by auction with the European Union. The question was raised just one week before the deadline for submission of bids and tenders which closes today, on 20 July. He said that the recent change of Valencian Government should mean something to the EU and they should now take into consideration the fact that the new government has been left with very little time to look at alternative positions. The present administration is "concerned" about the issue, which he referred to as "a terrible state of affairs" inherited from the previous Valencian Government. Decisions involve many millions of euros, most of which is public money, and should not be made in haste.” Of prime importance in the matter "is the Valencian taxpayer." "We must do what we can for the people of Valencia to make sure that they are not penalised further because of the poor decisions and bad management of the previous government," he said. However Soler also said that he has no powers to stop or delay the sale which can only be done by the EU. Once described by director Ridley Scott as the very best studios in the world the Ciudad de la Luz was built in Alicante at a cost to the Valencian public purse of 265 million euro. But following complaints by London’s Pinewood Studios in 2007, who argued that the public money gave the studios an unfair advantage, Brussels ordered that the studio be auctioned off and the money be returned to the people of Valencia. However unlike many of Spains white elephants (Im sure you can all bring a few to mind), according to Francis Ford Coppola, director of the Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now, Ciudad de la Luz still has a great deal of potential . Many other film experts would also seem to agree. One spokesman said the facilities are still first class but the location is not particularly ideal and the management during it’s early days

was absolutely awful. Costs of bringing in film crews were ridiculous with the director of Asterix at the Olympic Games, one of the few major films made at the studio, saying that he was left with a €2.5m hotel bill for the production. On another film, the actors arrived each day by taxi from Valencia, a 200-mile round trip. So in order to keep down costs, the government started subsidising individual productions, thus provoking Pinewood and other studios to appeal to Brussels. One producer said he could put up with the location, which is now far netter connected, had the studios not been run by people who didn’t know anything about cinema. “For example, it was the only film studio in the world that closed at weekends,” said Eva Andújar, a film production coordinator who often worked in Ciudad de la Luz. She also recalled the stratospheric incompetence when director Quentin Tarantino came to visit and the security staff wouldn’t let him in because he didn’t have a pass. The Pulp Fiction director went back to Madrid without seeing the studios. How many unmade films might that decision have cost? But now we can only wait. Soler probably doesn’t expect a reprieve; neither does he expect the sale to reach its initial 265 million euro outlay, but what he is most concerned about is how to keep the studios together, to then generate an economic recovery in the area and to reinvent the region in what is undoubtedly one of the most powerful industries in the world.

Unless there is an unlikely reprieve the tendering process for the auction ends today, Monday

Abducted Child Reunited in Torrevieja B ODYBUILDER AND NURSE ARRESTED IN SPOR T S NUTRITION SCAM

National Police agents have arrested 22 people for buying and distributing doping substances in sports nutrition stores and gyms. Those arrested include prominent bodybuilders and a nurse who was responsible in providing formula’s for the production of original drugs in pharmacies, which were prized for their quality and with an absolutely proven composition. During the operation nine homes were raided, where the police seized about 500,000 doses of illegal drugs. The Internet was also used to obtain the substances, where they bought in small lots by many different foreign suppliers. The investigations began on the island of Ibiza after police became suspicious of the activities of a group of individuals working in the area, related to the distribution of large quantities of anabolic steroids. The first inquiries led the agents to the Community of Valencia, where the product suppliers lived. The information gathered then let the police to those

directly responsible for the receipt and sale of steroids. After identifying the ringleaders further investigations was carried out to determine the composition of the structure of the organization, find out the ways by which they purchased the products and how they were distributed. This information enabled the agents to discover several establishments which were used as direct points of contact with potential customers, as well as a warehouse where they kept most of the doping substances. During the operational phase of the investigation nine homes were searched where agents seized more than 500,000 doses of doping substances, 31 890 euros, several prohibited weapons (a stun gun, several knives and boxing equipment), documentation relating to fraudulent activity and forged prescriptions. 22 people were then arrested simultaneously in Valencia (16), Ibiza (4) and Barcelona (2).

The Guardia Civil has successfully located and returned a child to his mother in Torrevieja after investigators found that the boy had been brought to Spain illegally by his father. The events date back to 2013, when the couple separated. Custody of the child was left to the mother, who took up residency in a village in Italy. The father started a judicial process to obtain custody, but rather than waiting for the judgement, it became apparent that the boy had been taken from his mother´s care when he disappeared whilst playing in a park near his home. Believing they had fled to Spain, the Guardia Civil launched a search and located the boy in a home in the Guadalupe area of Cáceres. Having received the appropriate authority, the child was seized and reunited with his Cuban mother in Torrevieja, where they had lived as a couple before the split, whilst the Spanish father now faces charges of abduction and has been delivered to the courts.

SAMM RAISE 1200 EURO FOR CHARITY A great day was enjoyed by spectators and competitors when the race staged by SAMM, the Sailing Association Mar Menor, on June 17th raised over 1200 for their chosen charity AMMA, Alzheimer Mar Menor Association.

Charity Day Race Winners

The event was a team race; with four teams of three boats, one IOM radio controlled boat, one dinghy and one day boat. The IOM radio controlled yachts opened the proceedings at 11:30, resulting in a very close four lap race. As each team’s IOM boat finished, the dinghy commenced its first lap in ideal conditions. As this finished, it passed a baton to the day boat which did the second lap. Then the dinghy did the third lap till each boat completed four laps. The format was interesting and exciting. As the race progressed, the conditions gradually became more challenging (the Easterly wind force 2-3 at the start built to around 4-5) and the baton passing increasingly difficult, often requiring a number of attempts before success was achieved. For some, this proved to be decisive, as with the increasing wind came swimming, the odd paint exchange and shroud twanging as battens were exchanged. This provided both excitement and anticipation of the result, whilst adding to the ever increasing complexity of keeping track of the race. Despite this, the officials did a great job recording the exchanges and the numerous start and finish times, helped of course, by some computer timing and reporting. No More Baby on Board Signs? A Spanish company is hoping that the traditional “Baby on Board” sign for cars will soon be a thing of the past, as they have patented a new design which they hope will be the future of delicate passenger warnings Patrimi Innovación has designed “Babyled”, an illuminated triangular sign which will warn that a vehicle is carrying a baby by use of LED lighting. Without wires or harmful electrical waves, the device composes of two parts. The first is a pressure mat which is placed in the child seat of the car. The second part is the illuminated triangle which is designed to be stuck to the rear of the vehicle, and is removable. Once the child is placed in the seat, the sensor becomes aware of its presence and so illuminates the sign, switching it back off

once the pressure is eased by the removal of the child. The manufacturer is confident that the device is legal for use in Spain, so much so they state that the product is certified and complies with all current regulations and that it does not contravene any road safety regulations. So much so, the company provide a certificate in the box which they say will allow the driver to present the facts to a law enforcement officer in the event of being stopped or questioned about the device. However, with a price tag of just under 80 euro for Babyled, the more traditional sticker might be the cheaper option, but the manufacturer also says that the batteries and device can last up to 13 years, and therefore the entire childhood from birth.

UGT CRITICIZES CUTS IN MEDICAL STAFF The UGT union said on Tuesday they have learned that, in an effort to cut costs, Torrevieja Hospital and the region’s health centres will not replace many of the doctors and other medical staff when they go on their annual holidays. They say that the situation is unacceptable, that it will increase the workload amongst the other medical staff and it will hinder patient care. Only 30% of specialised care staff and 20% of Pediatric staff will be replaced.

The union said that it has already communicated it’s complaints to the company that manages the health department as "the inefficiencies caused by the lack of coverage are the problem of the company itself and not the medical staff." Torrevieja is a summer resort and the population increases significantly during the summer months. However there are no coherent holiday procedure put in place to cater for this additional influx of people. They say that health is not an economic issue, and should not be treated as such. It is more a matter of life and death.

Electric Cars Among Worst 1st Year Depreciators Fluence, C-Zero and LEAF all lose more than three-quarters of their value Three electric cars are among the worst first year depreciators in a “Bottom 10” released by motor trade valuation market leaders Glass’s. The Renault Fluence, Citroen C-Zero and Nissan LEAF E have all lost more than three-quarters of their value after covering 12,000 miles during the last 12 months. Rupert Pontin, head of valuations at Glass, said: “The motor trade and the used car buying public remain interested in electric cars but are still reticent to actually buy them in numbers – and these depreciation figures reflect that fact. “To be fair, these three EVs are among some of the least attractive on the market – the Fluence and C-Zero both have a ‘last generation’ feel while the LEAF E is on the bottom rung of the LEAF range – but their presence does reflect the fact that the EV sector remains sluggish.” Other models in the list include the lowest-powered, entry level versions of some generally popular but aging models such as the Vauxhall Insignia and Renault Megane. Rupert explained: “There is very little enthusiasm in the market generally for poorly-equipped cars and if those cars are also becoming dated and have an older power unit, it really hits their prospects in the used market.” However, Rupert added, these highly depreciating cars now arguably represented excellent value for money. “It would be difficult to recommend a new Renault Fluence costing more than £22,000 but one that is around £5,000-£6,000 at 12 months old is arguably a good buy for someone looking to try EV motoring.” Five of the bottom ten are listed below: 1. Renault FLUENCE E Z.E. Expression + saloon 4 door auto - (29.05%) 2. Vauxhall MERIVA1.4 16v Expression MPV 5 door (2010 MY) - (31.78%) 3.Chevrolet CRUZE 1.4 4X4 LS station wagon 5 door 1398cc - (32.07%) 4. Citroen C-ZERO E hatchback five door auto - (33.23%) 5. Nissan LEAF E hatchback five door auto - (33.26%) The figure shown in brackets is the percentage retained value after 12 months/12,000 miles. The Renault FLUENCE E Z.E. Expression

HAVANA, CUBA AN OLD LADY WITH CIGAR STUB IN MOUTH PHOTO-SHOOT OPPORTUNITY With Andrew Atkinson itnessing refurbishment work on the USA Embassy in Havana, Cuba, in February, in the wake of severing diplomatic ties after the Cuban Revolution in the 1950's, ANDREW ATKINSON, who has a property in Los Montesinos, Alicante, Spain, gives his view, having deemed life as 'Paradise' in Cuba. With days spent on the beach, with local pelicans, drinking champagne and cocktails. Havana Cigars too. DIPLOMATIC ties between America and Cuba have been re-instated - over 60 years after a crisis that nearly lead to WWIII. It really did - it was that 'close' as history reveals. I was in Cuba this year and Havana remained in a 'time-warp' - in the wake of restrictions imposed by the USA - and the 'Missile Crisis'. I saw refurbishment works being undertaken at the USA Embassy in Havana - that will re-open this month. A Cuban Embassy will also open in Washington. It was formally announced on Wednesday July 1 that the USA and Cuba had reached an agreement to re-establish formal diplomatic relations and open embassies in each other's capitals. In December USA President Barack Obama initiated full diplomatic relations between America and Cuba - with the re-establishment of Embassies. America has lifted certain travel restrictions into Cuba and also allowed for some new economic ties. But there remains huge steps to overcome.

W

President Obama met with Raul Castro in April - a few months after I visited Havana - in Panama. It was the first time the leaders of Cuba and the USA had met in decades. The United States removed Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terror in June, opening a gateway for the diplomatic renewal between the two countries. I witnessed refurbishment work on the USA Embassy in Havana in February, situated on the

Havana waterfront. It formerly housed the American Embassy, prior to the severing of diplomatic ties after the Cuban Revolution in the fifties. The move ends decades of Cold War enmity - in the wake of the failed 'Bay of Pigs' invasion and the Missile Crisis. President Barack Obama's ending the US freeze with Cuba is central to his foreign policy legacy after the Diplomatic relations ceased between the USA and Cuba in 1961 - after Fidel Castro's Revolution. America's economic embargo was initially imposed by President Eisenhower. Fidel Castro visited New York in 1959 in the wake of ousting Fulgencio Batista - a USA backed dictator - based in Havana. President Eisenhower refused to meet Castro. And, returning to Havana, Castro Nationalised all USA interests within Cuba - without compensation. That lead to America breaking diplomatic ties, and imposing a trade embargo. Today calls are being made that the Yankees want their 'interests' back - including hundreds of properties. I cannot see this happening, as many Cuban families now reside in them now. During the Bay of Pigs invasion, at a time when Cuba looked to the Soviet Union as their Ally, it almost lead to WWIII. It's a 'miracle' it didn't - with Nuclear weapons almost launched. Now President Obama believes that the trade embargo on Communist island Cuba - 90 miles south of Florida - is ineffective. President Obama could visit Cuba before he leaves office in 2017, according to a White House spokesperson, having met Raul Castro in April. It was the first meeting between USA and Cuba leaders since 1956. Despite travel and commutations restrictions being significantly eased there are many problems to be ironed out - including discussions on Human Rights. A Cuban trade embargo was installed in 1962. And fierce opposition still remains to lifting it from American Republicans. Another major issue is compensation wanted for the Cuban 'confiscated' American properties in Havana. Raul Castro, who succeeded brother Fidel in 2008, deserves credit - as does President Obama - for their huge task in succeeding the re-opening of Embassies. Along with Diplomats, from both countries. A move in the right direction, taking into account the state of the World right now. My visit to Cuba for me was 'Paradise' - with the people arguably the friendliest you could ever meet - but many are poverty stricken. Others are happy and have a good life - but are not rich, nor wealthy people. That said Cubans receive free University education, and a free health service. However many Cuban workers wait at the roadside, where police can stop vehicles, and instruct the driver to take them to their workplace. Be it in a car - or a truck. I saw people jump into the back of trucks. American Cadillacs and Chevrolets are deemed to

be in a 'time-warp' in Cuba. They are. The Cuban Government will now allow residents to sell their cars, according to the state-run newspaper Granma. The USA trade embargo had put the Cadillacs and 'Chevvies' in a time-warp. Car models include fin-tailed Chevvy Bel-Air and Cadillac Coupe de Ville. Many of the cars are used as taxis for tourists. During my visit to Havana, I had a personal chauffeur. The Cuban car owner was one of the minority - as most Cubans do not own cars and rely on public bus transport. Or other Cubans' transport! The Cuban currency is the Cuc. A qualified Doctor's salary is reportedly little more than 25 Cucs a month. Imagine that in European countries? One memory that will last from my visit to Havana, Cuba, was a little old lady who ran to me - with a Havana cigar stub in her mouth. She wanted a photograph taken of her and me. That done, she wanted payment. And I duly obliged. The Cuban people deserve better, from what have endured over five decades. And from what I saw. For me - and other Europeans - life was 'Paradise' in Cuba. With days spent at the beach, with local pelicans, drinking champagne and cocktails. Havana Cigars too. Let's hope the future bodes well for them. The Cuban people deserve it.

Vistabella Bowls Report Sponsored by Autos Direct, TV Choice and Venture Fleet. By Lynne Bishop Arthur Brown & Barry Norris proudly accepted the VCL league Champions trophies at Monte Mar this week. Arthur Captained the Red league Vikings and Barry Captained the Green league Saxons. Many Congratulations to Greenlands Jasmine who went on to win the North v South playoff. In the Premier Twenty our guys had a real battle on their hands playing San Luis, who have been on our tails all along and unfortunately they got the better of us in this penultimate tie. Going into the final match next week we are now trailing San Luis by two points for the title, we really need to pull out all the stops, results, Singles Martin Foulcer (H) 21-15. Ian Kenyon (A) 21-18. Rinks, Jenny Chaplin, Dave Chaplin, Barry Norris & Mike Regan 20-13 well done. Points, Vistabella 6 (119) - 12 (142) San Luis. Men's Pairs was also the penultimate week with Mike Regan's team just managing to win one point against Quesada ND, shots 36 - 39. Martin Foulcer's team on the other hand scooped up all five points from their match against La Marina TS, shots, 33 - 31. Good luck everyone in your final games. Ending on a sad note, it is with regret to hear that Gordon Gowland, one of our founder members passed away this week, I'm sure we would all like to send his family our condolences, he will be sadly missed.

Monday, 20th July, 2015

It wasn’t a great week on the score sheets, but we have been up against two teams that are able to call on a plethora of strong bowlers, whereas we are a club that believes in bowling for fun and all round fairness in selection. In saying that, we were up against it and our bowlers, particularly our inexperience ones put on a good show and hopefully enjoyed themselves and are even more enthusiastic. Against San Miguel on Tuesday, we lost all the rinks away from home, though were not overwhelmed on any and at home managed just the one rink, where the home mat did not give enough advantage to defeat a strong team. At Home: David Whitworth 12-21. June Whitworth and Shirley Edwards 20-23. Rob Clark, John Clark and John Newell 2512. Terry Buswell, Peter Baldwin, Ron Edwards and Richard Needham 9-22. Away: Malc Sykes 11-21. Jim Gracie and Jane Hamill 10-22. Ann Taylor, Malc Elmore and Jim Taylor 15-24. Peter Blackburn, Keith Longshaw, Graham Day and Stew Hamill 11-21. Thursday evening found us playing a re-arranged match from Tuesday of the previous week and again we had some great representation from some of our inexperienced players and although we lost decisively, we put on a good show with some close losses to accompany our one win. And of course we played in the spirit of the club and had fun. At home: Jane Hamill 17-21. Jim Gracie and Stew Hamill 17-12. Lindsey Phillips, Clive Phillips and Richard Needham 17-23. Peter Blackburn, Ngaio Baldwin, Brian Taylor and John Newell 6-23. Away: David Whitworth 7-21. June Whitworth and Shirley Edwards 9-21. John Cleal, David Haynes and John Skipper 20-23. Ann Taylor, Ron Edwards, Malc Elmore and Jim Taylor 12-30. El Rancho Bowls Club is holding an OPEN DAY on Saturday 22nd August at 10am. For membership details contact Brian Taylor on 965077093 or at briantaylor_es@yahoo.co.uk or Carolyn Harris on 966774316 or at elranchobowls.secretary@gmail.com. Sponsored by Rightmove.

GREENLANDS JASMINE RETAIN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

First congratulations to the winners of the Northern League, El Cid and the Southern winners, Blue Division-Greenlands Jasmine, Red Division-Vistabella Vikings and Green Division-Vistabella Saxons each of whom were presented with their winners trophy at the North v South play off at Monte Mar and many thanks to June Jones for organising all these Leagues in her usual efficient manner during the last three months. And what an exciting play off - no points for overall shots, just points per discipline making a total of 10 points available. The setting was great - sunny and hot but thankfully a good breeze to take the edge off. The ladies' singles went to Sandra Heath

(Greenlands) playing Ros Dingle (El Cid) 21 -12 and the men's to Mike Edwards (Gn) playing Derek Eldon (El Cid) 21 -14 with all players showing their excellent draw bowling skills. The Pairs of Sue Johnson & Steve Hibberd (Gn) played well against Ian Brown & Derek Randal (El Cid) losing 8-19, but what a nail biter in the triples where after 17 ends the score was 17-17, although earlier after 9 ends El Cid were 5 - 11 down and fought back valiantly to equalise on shots. Last end and the ladies from El Cid - Lynne Eldon, Hazel Brown & Yvonne Briden picked up the 1 shot needed to win over Brian Tomlin, Avril Toozer & Mel Brown. The rinks was an equally impressive match. Not

to be outdone it was 14-14 after 16 ends ... El Cid being 5-12 down after 11 ends. Greenlands just pulled away over the last 2 ends winning 17-14 to Sheila Stead, Jan Westall, Florence Edwards & Steve Cantley against Paul Trunchion, Anita Randall, Adrian Lambert & Jack Wardrop. Excellent bowling from everyone played in the true spirit of the game so Greenlands Jasmine won for the second year running, 64 and shots 84-77. Well done! A big thank you to the supporters who applauded all the good bowls (of which there were plenty) which added a great atmosphere to the event, and to Monte Mar for the use of their green and the excellent meal afterwards.

Welcome to this weeks match results, first up is the CBBA Premier 20 encounter with La Siesta on Tuesday. The home teams were the more successful winning 3 out of the four rinks, well done to .......Singles, Sandra Heath, Shots for 21, shots against 14. the Trips, the team of Joan Oliver, Chris Dewar and Jim Oliver were fantastic winners yet again with a score of 20 shots for and 6 against. A close finish in the Fours, but the honours went to Margaret Dewar, Janet Bliss, Florence Edwards and Mike Edwards. score was 14 shots to 12. Away winners in the Pairs were Mary Lockley and Trevor Vanner with a great score of ....22 shots for and 8 shots against, Final scores were as follows: shots for 126, shots against 111, Points for 10, Points against 8. Well done to all the team The VCL north and south match, involved Greenlands Jasmines v El Cid, who, like Greenlands won their league on the last day of the season. In a very competitive match, Sandra Heath won her ladies singles match, before Mike Edwards emulated her, by winning his men’s singles. Although the pairs team of Sue Johnson and Steve Hibbard lost their pairs match, a last end victory by the rinks team of Sheila Stead, Jan Westall, Florence Edwards and Steve Cantley, meant the trophy was heading South. With the pressure off, Brian Tomlin, Avril Toozer and Mel Brown, played out the last end of their trips, only to lose by a solitary shot. Congratulations to all the Jasmines squad, who contributed to a great season, culminating in this 3 - 2 victory over a very strong El Cid team.

By Suzi Cooper Sponsored by Spanish Life Properties With the SABA & VCL leagues having finished there is very little to report this week. Last week in Saturdays chicken drive Martin Richardson took home the meat voucher while Carol Broomfield clocked up the double taking the eggs for the 2nd week running. In the Mens pairs league on Monday Kevin & Derek drew 15-15 while George & Dave won 24-11 for 4 points to 1. We have played 2 20-20 league matches this week but no result sheets received. I do know that on Tuesday against Monte Mar we won all disciplines at home & the rinks away plus the overall for 12points. On Thursday against El Rancho we won all 4 disciplines at home & 3 away for 16 points. There is just 1 match to go. Carol Broomfield & Nigel Baigent progressed to the next round of the SABA Mixed Pairs after a good win. While Peta Rhodes had a really close game to progress in the Ladies Singles. The chicken drive continues each Saturday morning. 9.15 for 9.30 start. Non members welcome subject to paying the relative green fee. On Wednesday we have the first of our evening bowls followed by a 1 plate meal. If you haven’t already got your name down you can still add it up to Tuesday evening. Don’t forget to put your meal choice & also that of your other half if they are not playing. Finally, big hugs to Ruth Birch who is looking like the invisible man after her fall. Hope you are soon feeling better Ruth.

ADVERTISING HOTLINE 966 73 0057 LEADER SAN MIGUEL GOLF SOCIETY

At El Valle. July 15th, 2015. After last week’s medal at La Roda, San Miguel returned to another Murcian course, the Nicklaus designed El Valle located a mere 15 minutes from the region’s capital. Of course hot due to the time of year, it was the humidity that was perhaps even more noticeable, with the usually clearly visible Cartagena hills just a faint discoloration of the horizon’s skyline. Tees and fairways were in their usual good state, but some of the greens seemed not to have recovered well from their recent hollow tining. Sanded bare patches, at times numerous, were present on several, and the occasional pin found close to these when other parts of the green were fine. Is it not permitted for a Grounds man to position a flag away from such an area on a green if it means leaving the A,B,C,D protocol? Answers on a postcard to........ However, a lot of good scores were posted, with 20 of the 25 members playing getting 30 or more points, although only one of the 8 guests.. Most worthy of mention today were the Society’s ladies who dominated the bronze category with the three best scores of the day, well done Marg, Jenny and Mary, and a taking of two of the four nearest the pin prizes by Eva Pettersson. Joost Boelhouwer, our youngest member, also deserves much praise for leading the Gold category winners, showing the oldies just how it is done. The day’s competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Richard Cleary (33), 3rd Marg Birtwistle (37 on CB), 2nd Jenny Staines (37 on CB) and 1st, with the best score of the day, Mary Cleary with 38 points. Silver Category: 4th Alan MacDonald (34 on CB), 3rd Paul Kelsall (34 on CB), 2nd John Aitchison (35 on CB), and 1st, also with 35, Brian Staines. Gold Category: 4th Robin Eastman (34 on CB), 3rd Tony Smale (34 on CB), 2nd Theo Boelhouwer (34 on CB) and 1st, the Society’s youngest member, Theo’s son Joost, with an excellent 36 playing off of 11. The Abacus. After last week’s miss-award of this prize, with Bjorn Pettersson receiving today what he should have done at La Roda, Mike Jordan, the usurping winner then, fought hard to legitimately win it this time around. And did so!! Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Paul Kelsall (6), Theo Boelhouwer (9), and Eva Pettersson, who took both 12 and 15. The two Best Guest(s) prizes went to runner-up Mark Withington (29) and winner William Finn, who scored an excellent 37 points. Our thanks go to the staff at El Valle golf course for their contribution to an excellent day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. FINAL RESULTS FOR SAAM SPRING SERIES The SAMM Spring Series racing is now over and the final point’s total and positions are now calculated. The lead was closely fought all season and the final result shows only 1.25 points separate the top two boats. Congratulations to the Catamaran ‘Hamour’ on their first and Sailfish ‘Sirocco’ on its second. They recorded 5 and 4 race wins respectively during the season and neither was ever positioned lower than sixth. The mixed fleet races using the PY handicap system and the full results

show that the handicaps are now fairly accurate as 5 different boats have won races and 6 boats have achieved a second place. This indicates the results are mostly affected by the experience of the different crews, the tactics and the weather conditions.

Cat and Martin pass the Baton

The Autumn Series is scheduled to start on September 6th at the usual venue, The Centro Tecnico Deportivo at Los Narejos on the Mar Menor. Everybody welcome, have a look at our web site www.sailingmarmenor.com for full details.

CAFE UNO GOLF SOCIETY AT VISTABELLA 18 players turned out today, Thursday 16th July to play at Vistabella golf. The course was in excellent condition and the weather was, to put it mildly, HOT!!! However, we all managed to suffer it and do our best. 4 - 5 hours out in those conditions would only be endured by strong, dedicated sportsmen, playing to win a pack of top grade golf balls and to see their name in the local newspaper report! Those heroes are listed below:Only one category today. 1st P.Buckler - 39pts. 2nd S.Lawrence 34pts. Best front 9 - H.Hunter - 17pts. c/b. Back 9 - J.Chesworth - 17pts. c/b. Nearest the pin in 2 - hole 10 - P.Buckler. Hole 15 - S.Lawrence. Winner of the 2`s competition - H.Hunter. Football card - P.Smith.

Well done to all the winners and thanks to all for the turn out. Next week, Thursday 23rd July we are at Alenda Golf. 1st tee time is 10am. In 2 weeks time on 30th July, we are at Font Del Llop. 1st tee 10am. The sheet is up in the bar. Thanks to Cafe Uno for the hospitality. We welcome our new committee for the year2015, Graham Butterworth (captain), John Pedersen (handicap secretary), Steve Lawrence (secretary). Just a reminder that membership fees are now due. A few places remain for the individual match play knockout, contact John Pedersen to get your name in. Contact numbers and e-mail addresses, diary dates etc, are all on the society website. Steve Lawrence.

Carp-R-Us Thursday the 16th of July saw the Clubs anglers fishing round 8 of the Summer series of matches on the Eden canal in Guardamar. The results of the match were: in first place Andy Foden with 5.76kg, in second place with 2.66kg was Steve Fell, third was Jackie Breslin with 2.32kg and in fourth place was Tom Marshall with 2.20kg- once again this venue did not come up to scratch. TMGS AT LA MARQUESA

Another sweltering day greeted us as we arrived at La Marquesa for this week’s Stableford competition. Surprisingly everyone arrived on time and no one got lost! It’s been well documented that we are a multinational Society, today we welcomed a Dutchman and a couple from Belgium for the first time, the couple are students of our Secretary, who is also the resident pro at Real club de golf Campoamor. The course was in reasonably good condition for such high temperatures, although the greens were a little on the slow side, but good never the less. Yet again I had the pleasure of the company of Vernon Brown, who is sadly retuning to the UK on Friday and the ever present Swede Arne Hansson, Arne is suffering from a few problems with his beloved Jaguar, so he didn’t begin in a good frame of mind, it was left to Vernon and myself to take his mind of it, that’s if we were going to have an enjoyable day’s golf! After a few holes of encouragement he soon found his stride and managed to put a few points on his card. On the other hand our 2 Belgium guests seemed to be having a tremendous time, sometimes husband and wife playing in the same group isn’t the best recipe for good golf, however Patrick soon realised that today was going to be his wife’s day. Ria is very keen to improve her golf and boy did she show it today, she has never played this course before and yet still managed to return a massive score of 48 points! And that was from only 17 holes because she had a no score on 1 hole. Her handicap has dropped by 6 full shots from 33,5 to 27,5, could be something to do with her lessons! Maybe it won’t be so easy for her next week at Villamartin. Did I mention that the score card has already been sent to the Belgium Golf Federation! It’s no surprise then that she won this week’s visitors prize. Our Silver category winners didn’t even come close to her score with the Norwegian trio of Roger Nilsen, 30 pts. Carsten Landaas 31 pts. and Ole Rong 36 pts. taking home the bacon. We did manage to get a couple of Brits into the top 3 of the Gold category, Captain, John Eyre taking 1st place with a 1 better than par 37 pts. Local School teacher Derek “Peter” Sullivan taking 2nd place with level par 36 points, but yet again Hans Arvesen from Norway taking 3rd place with 34 pts. The N.T.P.’s prizes this week were donated by Captain John and handicap sec. Colin Marsden. They went to Captain John on Hole 5, Dag Lovas Hole 11, Arne Hansson Hole 15 and lastly Carsten Landaas on Hole 17, the “2’s” pot was again won today so the €22 was divided between Chris Gray, Dag Lovas and John Eyre. Vernon very generously donated half a dozen bottles of Vodka, so after all of the winning cards had been removed a random draw was made for the Vodka. At this venue we frequently stop behind for the “clubhouse” restaurant menu del dia, it’s well worth giving it a try with incredible quality and value at just, €12, 50 Photo: Silver category winners Next week we visit Villamartin so if you fancy a game just call the Secretary on 661 524 101 or visit our website www.tmgs.org you can also follow us on Facebook/tmgsgolf or via our twitter account @tmgsgolf. Club de golf El Paraiso will also be playing Villamartin on the 26th more info can be found at www.clubdegolfelparaiso.com

BULL FLANAGAN GOLF SOCIETY For their July meeting 20 society members travelled up the motorway to Bonalba to challenge this difficult course which usually sees lower than normal scores. The course was in excellent playing condition and had undergone substantial general improvements. The weather was commensurate to ensuring a good days golf and hopefully this would reflect in the scores returned. After the match all players returned to the Bull Flanagan Bar / Restaurant in Quesada for the prize winner’s presentation where members and guests were able take the opportunity to sample a refreshing drink before having a choice of a sponsored free lunch provided by Chris Stott of the Bull Flanagan. Only two players managed to get a score greater than 30 points leaving the chasing pack behind on 28 or less and todays winner was Terry Thirkill scoring a creditable 33 points. Second and third places went to Brian Ead and Barrie Hopkinson scoring 32 and 28 points respectively. Nearest the pin winners on the par three holes were Mick McGrath on hole 4, Ken Enever on hole 8, and Brian Smith on hole 14. Terry Thirkill won the football cards and winner of the 28ers draw was Fred Hope who after just havin g the cateracts removed managed to record a first on nil points. The Captain Mick McGrath assisted the Secretary with the presentation ceremony and made comment on the success of the days event and how well it had been supported and he also thanked Chris and his staff and asked members to show their appreciation in the usual manner for their continued support and excellent service and quality of meals available on match days. He also advised members that the Anne McGrath Perpetual Memorial competition at Vistabella in June raised for the Oncology Department of Torrevieja Hospital 3,300 - 20

euros and he thanked everyone for their support and contributions. The Secretary reflected on another successful society day’s golf and thanked everyone for their attendance and concluded reminding members that the August match would be at Lo Romero on the 21st and members were to meet at the course but pay the course fee at the bar by Thursday 13 August as final numbers and payment must be paid in advance. The Secretary also advised members of a Silver Wedding Anniversary invitation and stated he would be arranging a variety of fund raisers including a draw for the Alzheimers Society We look forward to seeing you at future events, appreciate your support and if you wish to join the best Society on the Costa Blanca then contact the Secretary Bill Fantom on 635212916.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY Firstly the result of last Friday's final of the Singles Match Play knockout competition saw Olga Douglas continue her supreme progress brushing aside all contenders to become the first winner of our new competition with a 5 & 4 victory over runner up Geoff Biggerstaff. The photograph shows Olga receiving the trophy from Competition Secretary Lindsay Forbes. The remaining members played a 6x6x6 which was won with a score of 82 pts by the team of Rod Doel, Brian Staines, Bryan Neal and Marleen Billen. Our first game of this week was a best 2 of 4 with all scores counting on the Par 5's. The winners with a very good score of 102 were Olga and Alan Douglas together with guests Connah Judson and Reece Burke who were 4 pts clear of Bryan Neal, Reg Akehurst, Nick Campbell and Jenny Staines. On Wednesday we played our normal weekly

LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY AT RODA The recent hot weather has not daunted the spirits of our members and guests and we have continued to have growing support this year. Our trip to Roda was no exception and, whilst there was a pleasant breeze, the expected strong winds failed to materialise and a good golfing day was enjoyed by all. The winners probably enjoyed it the most but, yet again, there were many scores in the 30’s. Congratulations to all those players. Nearest the Pins: Hole 2 Alan Craig, Hole 7 Mike Davies, Hole 11 Colin Hasler Silver Division on C/BElspeth Craig 33 pts Gold Division Barry Thorogood 39 pts As usual we re-assembled at the La Marina Sports & Social Club for after game drinks and presentation by the Captain and to enjoy a buffet provided as always by Paolo and Helena. (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Around and about the courses – Roda Despite improving but difficult financial times Roda will hold their LA FIESTA DEL GOLF for the 3rd consecutive year which will take place from Monday 10th to Sunday 16th of August 2015 The Roda Golf & Beach Resort Fiestas started two years ago as an initiative of the Roda Golf Course Members. The original idea was to organize a fiesta were members and house owners of Roda of all nationalities could get together and organize different activities such as golf, paddle, tennis, karaoke, face painting, jumping bag races for kids, etc. The success was such that friends of friends came (around 5000 people last year) and this has now been “declared officially” the Fiesta of the Resort. This year, with the aim of bringing even more people to the resort, they want to offer the possibility to play 18 holes at Roda Golf Course for only €30 at any time during this week. Buggies are at their usual low season rate of 12€. This means €36 per person shared buggy included or €42 for 1 x Green Fee &buggy However the festive spirit does not finish there, customers will be able to enjoy beer and tapas from just €1 each (during six days, from Tuesday to Sunday) and they will be holding clinics (aimed to beginners) for both adults and juniors for only €5. They will also do a Speed Golf tournament (1 hole). This will be one of the most fun moments of the Fiestas program. The entry for this tournament will be €5 but everybody is welcome to come and watch. The highlight of the Fiesta del Golf will be the 2nd running of the charity tournament “Food Aim” where the registration fee would be €30 + a compulsory donation of a minimum of three non-perishable foods such as: packages of rice, pasta, flour, canned food, oil, sugar, etc. All foods will be given to Cáritas San Javier. This tournament will be open to federated and non-federated players. Real club de golf Campoamor welcomed 26 members and guests for our monthly federated competition. The course was set up competition standards, which basically means that it plays its full length with the flags positioned in competition places on the greens. This is the true test of you handicap. In general day to day play most courses shorten the course so that players get around faster and feel happier with a better score on the card when they have finished. It’s well known that the local courses do not run many “Federated competitions” during the year and now the rules of the Federation are that a player must submit 4 cards annually to maintain his handicap, so to accommodate this necessity Club de golf El Paraiso who are registered with the Federation under LV39 are able to organise official competitions for Federated players. The course is in great condition with no preferred lies necessary and the greens returning to their normal fast conditions

after the recent maintenance. The prizes for the lucky winners included a number of green fee vouchers and Proshop vouchers all sponsored by club de golf El Paraiso. In the 2nd division the winner with the best score of the day went to Lenart Holmberg with 39 points, in 2nd place came local member Rob Ricketts with 34 points which was just 1 point ahead of his nephew Callum Hitcham. 1st division was also close with the Norwegian, Hans Arvesen taking 1st place with 35 points followed by pipe smoking Chris Gray with 33 points which was just a point ahead of John Eyre on 32 points. I caught up with our last group on the par 3 6th tee, Sandra Twentyman said that she has seen parts of the course that she didn’t know existed, as mentioned earlier the course was at its full length and even a few bites on her tuna and cucumber sarnies didn’t give her the strength to reach the green. Our President, Arne Hansson was also in this group and began the day on the desk to book everyone in; he now appreciates the work undertaken by the secretaries of both clubs and Societies. Photo: Winners of the card draw, we remove the winning cards and then draw from the rest for some very decent bottles of wine. Our next competition is on the 26th July at Villamartin everyone is welcome to join us, to find out more visit our website www.clubdegolfelparaiso.com or call the secretary on 661 524 101 or follow us on Facebook/clubdegolfelparaiso or via twitter at @elparaiso14 If you fancy a midweek game, The Member’s Golf Society are playing at Villamartin on the 22nd visit www.tmgs.org

L UIS CARLOS SHINES IN ENTER TAINING FRIENDLY

CD TORREVIEJA 1

CORDOBA CF 3

Football has returned to Vicente Garcia Stadium, after an absence of just over 2 months. Last Saturday's friendly against a strong Cordoba side, treated a healthy sized crowd to spirited and attacking play, culminating in 4 well worked goals (even though 1 was a bit dodgy!). This is this first of 4 very testing home friendlies, as manager Pedreno prepares his squad for another demanding season in tercera division. As expected, the first half line up will be the foundation of Pedreno's, but unlike previous seasons, substitutions were made gradually, and not en masse, allowing for more continuity. Torry started brightly, when Rafa Gomez (yes, he's staying!) forced a good low save, then contrived to produce other well worked moves, which were thwarted at the death. Cordoba's Paul thought he had scored on 18 mins, but was rightly adjudged offside, although the let off was short lived. Just 2 minutes later, a high floated corner was headed home by Florin, but not before Oscar had been clearly fouled in attempting to make a save. Amazingly, the goal stood, much to the disgust of an incensed Torry keeper. On the half hour mark, Martin (injury free and raring to go - welcome back) acrobatically cleared a goal bound effort on the line, with a superb diving header. Five minutes later, Luis Carlos collected the ball on the right wing, cut inside,

beat 3 players, before planting a glorious shot which beat Juan Carlos at his far post, allowing Torry to go in all square at the interval. Last season, Cordoba were gracing the same turf as the likes of Barcelona in the La Liga, and even though they finished bottom, they are a class act. In all honesty, they dominated the 2nd half, and should have scored more. Cruz missed a sitter from only 1 yard out, when his shot was wide of the target. Arturo Shot across the face of goal, failing to find a colleague's touch. Xisco fired home from 15 yards on 62 mins, although Oscar made a valiant attempt, but his push onto the cross bar, bounced over the line. Oscar then made another excellent save on 73 minutes, but from the very next attack, Arturo struck Cordoba's 3rd goal, from the edge of the box. So, all in all, this was an encouraging work out, giving Torry fans the opportunity to view new players such as Cavas, Juanfran, Lewis, Rives, and not forgetting the return of local lad Luis Carlos, plus 4 promising youth players. Next up for Torry is the visit of Elche on Weds 22 Jul, ko 8pm, then Hull under 21s on Fri 24 Jul, ko also 8pm. An away trip to Ontinyent on 22/23 Aug, awaits Torry in the 2015/16 season. This is followed by a home match against Cullera on Sun 30 Aug.

MAN CITY THRASH REAL MURCIA AT PINATAR There was a double header at Pinatar Arena on Saturday where a healthy crowd saw the Man City Development squad thrash a youthful Real Murcia 10-0 while Villarreal beat Real Betis by 2-1. As City came to the midway point of their ten day long pre season campaign in Pinatar Jason Wilcox and Lukas Nmecha were to two Mancunian stars with 5 and 6 goals respectively. In the all Spanish affair Villarreal took the lead on the half hour against Betis through defender Yoel before Rayco levelled the scoreline on the hour mark. Carlos Martinez then put Villarreal back in front with a 20 yard strike to claim victory although Betis probably did enough to earn a draw.

THE END FINALLY IN SIGHT FOR ELCHE When will it all end; a week on Tuesday, 28 July, is the answer because until that day, whatever you might have read elsewhere, Elche CF are still a La Liga Club. It is on that day that Judge Eva Maria Alfageme will deliver her pronouncement, following the club receiving permission to appeal to the Spanish High Court after last week’s decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to enforce the earlier ruling made by Spain’s Professional Football League (LFP), of Administrative Relegation. The Judge has now called Eibar, who would be the beneficiaries of Elche’s relegation, allowing the Basque club to stay in the Primera, Elche and the LFP to meet at noon, Monday 20th July, to testify at a hearing that will determine Elche’s fate. After listening to both bodies on Monday, the Judge will deliberate and announce her ruling the following Tuesday, where all parties will then know for sure where they will be playing their football in the 2015-16 season. If the Judge rules in Elche’s favour, not only would they be able to remain in La Liga, they will also have a two to three year extension to resolve their economic discrepancies. Elche President Juan Anguix says he is still hopeful that Elche will retain their La Liga status

NEW MAN AT THE HELM FOR CD MONTESINOS FC By Andrew Atkinson CD Montesinos FC have parted with their manager of seven years Juampe in a shake up that has seen former Orihuela boss Roberto Cases appointed at the 2nd Regional Group 15 of the Valencia league club. Juampe bid a heartfelt farewell to the Full Monte fans for their support during his tenure at the club, and was saddened that the new committee hadn't renewed his contract. Juampe pointed the finger too at the dressing room, citing some players as being an influence to others. 'The new committee decided not to renew my contract. It was always my intention to stay. But that's football', said Juampe. 'The main condition was that I wanted to make sure that a few of last seasons players, who had made life difficult for me, were not signed by the club. 'I asked last seasons committee to back me, which was not done. This coming season I asked the new committee not to renew these players' contracts, to no avail. 'In my seven years I feel I have improved, year on year. I have given up home time and family time for the club, and attracted new sponsors. 'But this was not taken into consideration by the new committee. 'I feel the best resource the club has is the fans, the 'Full Monte'. I feel they should be valued more by the club...and the town. And by some people connected to the club. 'Where else in Spain does a small club with little resources have supporters like you? Nowhere! I wish the fans and the club all the best in future', said Juampe. 'I always felt the love of the fans of which I'll always be grateful. Some players had a disruptive influence on other players and that made it difficult for me and my management team. Goodbye', said Juampe. A spokesperson was unavailable from the club and Andrew Atkinson will report on regular updates ahead of and during the new campaign.
