NEW SCHOOL FINALLY A REALITY FOR PLAYAS DE ORIHUELA

Valencia’s Ministry of Infrastructure has finally published the bidding process for the building of a new Infant and Junior school to replace the portable cabin structure currently in use at the Colegio Playas de Orihuela.

The building will cost more than 6.63 million euro with a completion time of just 18 months The process, essentially applications to tender, was published in the Official Journal

of the Valencian Region, the DOCV. But interested parties will have to get their skates on as the deadline for the submission of tenders, or at least requests to participate, is 1500 hrs on 30th of June, by which time all documentation must be presented to the Department of Infrastructure.

So after over 13 years in temporary accommodation, by far the longest in the whole of the Valencian region, and after many years of public demonstrations by teachers, parents and members of the public, it now looks as though the new school could soon become a reality.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE A spokesman said that for the opening of tenders it is expected that the technical documentation will be examined on July 8 at 12:30 and the economic documentation on July 30 also at 12.30.

It was only 5 weeks ago that the Governing Board of the Orihuela Council approved the transfer of the building plot for the new junior school from council to regional ownership.

The plot is thought to be the area of land adjacent to the Los Dolses Commercial centre, just across the road from the current school and presently being used as an overspill car park.

Despite the delay, it will draw to a close one of the longest standing school disputes in the area after children have been taught in the temporary accommodation for the last 13 years.

Spokesperson for the School Parent Teachers Association, Yolanda Fernandez Martinez, said “The Board of APA Playas de Orihuela want to thank everyone for the support they have shown with this struggle, Monday after Monday, year after year, that has taken us five years to get to this stage of tender. The Orihuela Costa and District Branch of The Royal British Legion were at the Fun Day at Playa Flamenca Beach on Sunday 24 May which was organised by Eddie Coleman, in aid of Reach Out and The RBL. The day started with a parade by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums leading the way. This was followed by standards of the Branches of the RBL, the Royal Naval Association, the Royal Marines Association and the Royal Air Force Association.

The project will cater for up to 400 children born between 2003 and 2011 and it is being operated by the town’s Social services Department so as to enable parents to reconcile work and family life during the school holidays.

Children who attend the activity centre will play games, learn new crafts and skills and join in with a full range of fun experiences that will transform the centre into a place of holiday as a result of the efforts and contributions of more than 30 teachers and Assistants.

The activities will take place from 1 to July 31 and from 3 to 28 August in the Mediterranean College and it will be managed by a team of highly qualified professionals with extensive experience, and all with formal qualifications.

There will be a number of different options available to parents, getting underway at 8am and lasting through until 6pm. Dining facilities will be available with prices ranging from 50 to 150 €, depending on the hours, and with a 50% single-parent or large families discount.

The registration period will open on June 1 and will run until June 18 inclusive, or until all places have been filled. Those families which are registered on the Pilar de la Horadada padron will have preference when allocating places.

Registration forms are available in the Department of Social Services (Town Hall basement -1), from 9:00 to 13: 00h, from June 1.

NEW AIRPORT PARKING FACILITY Drivers visiting Alicante-Elche airport will face two months of disruption, as work has begun to build a new short-stay car park for dropping off and collecting passengers.

The new “Exprés” car park will offer 80 places for 15 minutes of free parking and is set to replace the current open drop-off and collection zones which currently allow a short stop but are frequently abused by drivers who leave their vehicle for longer.

The new car park will also mean that vehicle movements are recorded, which will please the legal taxi drivers as the information could be used to clamp down on pirate and illegal operators.

The cost of the work is 116,568.48 euro and it should be fully operational by July.

TRAFFICKING RING SMASHED IN JOINT SPAIN/UK OPERATION

In an operation involving Spain’s Police and the British Border Police, 24 people have been arrested, 13 in Spain and 11 in the UK, mostly from the same family, in a human trafficking network originating in Madrid Those arrested were allegedly smuggling Afghan nationals, into several European countries, in exchange for 25,000 euros By using falsified travel documents and accompanied by a "facilitator" the refugees would take a flight from Islamabad (Pakistan), transiting through Spain or Italy, before being transferred from there to other European states.

The investigations began when six illegal Afghans were discovered in Bilbao Airport as traffickers attempted to smuggle them into the country.

National Police Agents soon realized they were closing in on a criminal network that was based in Spain, with a leader of Pakistani origin, who was coordinating activities throughout Europe from Madrid.

He allegedly managed the gang’s logistics, and reinvested the proceeds of his activities in Spanish businesses in order to launder the money illegally obtained.

After recruiting Afghans who each paid 25,000 euros to the operation a facilitator would move groups of between 6 and 12 refugees from Pakistan into Spain or Italy. He would be responsible for handling all travel logistics including airline tickets, fake passports, hotels and any other issues that might arise.

From there the victims would be issued with false documentation with which they would be moved on to their final European destination.

As the investigation progressed, police found that, quite often, the organization used to London Heathrow as airport transit prior to their arrival in Spain, so contact was made with the British Border Police, who proceeded to arrest of 11 people, a Pakistani and 10 Afghans traveling with false passports.

The arrests saw an immediate change of routing by the network which had to immediately reorganize its travel system in order to avoid Heathrow, opting for direct travel from Islamabad to Barcelona.

With this information, the National Police began to identify and locate other members of the organization resulting in the arrest of 13 people, including the leader of the group.

A number of homes and commercial establishments were raided in which 18 forged British and Spanish passports were found, 20 Pakistani passports, fake UK visas, passport pages with exit stamps, computers and mobile phone were seized along with bank documents and cash.

A search was also carried out in a Logrono travel agency, where officers found numerous documents which revealed the existence of more than 170 trafficked trips between April and September 2014 amounting to US $ 4,250,000.

NEW ROUTE The Catalan airline Volotea, which already provides a service to Venice, has launched a new route from Alicante-Elche airport to Asturias. The service will operate twice a week, every Tuesday and Friday. The airline is using a Boeing 717 with capacity for 125 passengers.

AIR CONTROL STRIKE TO AFFECT 800 ALICANTE FLIGHTS The National Union of Air Traffic Controllers called a 4 day strike last week which will take place on 8, 10, 12 and 14 June across the whole of Spain, affecting at the very least, 800 flights carrying in excess of 30,000 passengers in Alicante alone.

This is the first strike called by the Union in 26 years, was done so with it the support of 81% of the vote which took in over 90% of union members.

A spokesman said that the action is being called for two hours each morning, 10-12am, and two hours each afternoon, 6-8pm, across the country, saying this was in response to the sanctions handed down by AENA to 61 air controllers in Barcelona dating back to 2010.

In Alicante Airport, the strikes will affect the 800 scheduled flights (inputs and outputs) and about 30,000 passengers.

The strikes were originally called for last March but were postponed in the wake of the Germanwings air tragedy.

Once again air passengers will be affected by a strike of

air traffic controllers taking place as the summer tourist season begins in the country in earnest, threatening to disrupt the industry that is responsible for generating over 10% of the nation’s economy.

When we made contact with the airport operator AENA, they refused to comment saying only that the matter was being dealt with as a matter of the utmost urgency.

Five years ago, the government called in the army to take over control towers to try to break up a wildcat strike by air traffic controllers over pay and conditions which paralysed airports and stranded thousands of passengers.

IRISH EMBASSY IN MADRID TO HONOUR W.B. YEATS In light of the celebrations taking place world-wide to honour the 150th anniversary of the birth of one of Ireland’s most beloved poets, W. B. Yeats, the Embassy and the Yeats Society in Madrid will be holding an art exhibition “Of this place” which will take place in the Ateneo de Madrid (Sala Prado 19), Calle Prado 19, from 2-14 June (11.30-9pm daily). The exhibition features 32 paintings and sculptures by eight contemporary Irish visual artists inspired by the very landscapes that helped shape Yeats’ poetry.

To complement the art from Ireland, Madrid

designer Sandra Ruiz Bellew will exhibit her “Minnaloushe Poetry in Jewellery” collection, inspired by Yeats’ poetry and the women in his life. There will also be a third exhibition on the life and works of Yeats, “La Vida y Obra de William Butler Yeats”, courtesy of the Irish Embassy.

On Thursday 11 June at 7pm Embassy Staff will be hosting a special evening at the Ateneo to honour the poet with readings, song and music. We hope to see you there.

V I S I T T H E S PA N I S H ENCOURAGING START FOR ELCHE N AV Y I N C A R T A G E N A MULTI ADVENTURE PARK During the first week of it’s operation over 5000 people flocked into the Elche Multiadventure park far exceeding any expectations.

Director Rafael Garrido said he was inundated with compliments from visitors adding that “It's been incredible, during the weekend the park was absolutely full of people, exceeding all of our expectations."

This activity park, which opened last Thursday, has eight circuits of zip lines and rope bridges. It is intended "for the enjoyment of participants of all ages," so much so that, one of the visitors who dared to plunge from the heights was an 80 year old woman. She said that if she lived a little closer to Elche she would use the park more often as she thoroughly enjoyed her day.

The attractions include several circuits of zip lines, classified by age and difficulty, and a TriAction Tower, a unique construction in Spain, more than 20 meters high, intended for all kinds of climbing games which sees users exiting by way of a 200 meter zip line through the park between the palm trees.

There is also a 2000 sq mtr artificial lake and a pier for a relaxing boat ride. The lake enjoys a unique purification system based on a natural salt treatment that filters, cleans and purifies the water. There is also a area chill out intended for holding all kinds of events, an area where visitors can practice archery and a "laser camp '.

The Spanish Navy has organised a series of presentations in Cartagena over two weekends, marking Armed Forces Day 2015.

Cartagena is well known for its militaristic history, with many of its original buildings now open to the public to learn about the heritage as part of its rich culture.

This weekend, the minesweeper “Tambre” was opened up for public visits, along with the rescue ship “Neptuno”, transporter “Martín Posadillo” and patrol boat “Infanta Elena”.

On Friday June 5th and Saturday June 6th, patrol boat “Cazadora”, minesweeper “Turia” and transporter “El Camino Español” will be opened up to visitors, from 4 in the afternoon on Friday and from 10 in the morning on Saturday, closing at half past 8 in the evening on both days.

There are also extra displays in the naval museum which will be open all week as part of the event, with a solemn flag lowering session planned for Friday evening.

Next weekend the patrol boat “Cazadora”, minesweeper “Turia” and transporter “El Camino Español” will be opened to visitors

Given the success of this first week, the intention now is to organize group visits from schools, clubs, businesses and societies during weekday mornings when the park would otherwise be closed. “Such groups will have much more freedom within the park”, said Garrido.

Currently, entrance to the park is absolutely free although visitors will have to pay between 3 and 14 euros for the use of the attractions.

RYANAIR INCREASE PR OFITS BY 66 PERCENT TO 867 MILLION EURO In the financial year ending 31March, Low cost airline Ryanair recorded a net profit of 867 million euros, representing a 66% increase on the previous year, when it recorded just 523 million euros.

The Irish airline justified this improvement with their "the lowest cost model program 'Improving Always' ('Always Getting Better') that has attracted millions of new customers to the brand.

The airline increased its revenue by 12%, to 5.654 million euros, and increased its passengers by 11% to over 90.6 million, up from 81.7 million the previous fiscal year.

Fuel costs were down 1% to 1,992 million euros while handling and airport charges increased by

15%, to EUR 712.8 million. This, the airline said was planned in advance and due to new routes and airport hubs.

Spending was increased in marketing and distribution (+ 21%), to 233.9 million euros, followed by maintenance costs (+ 16%), to 134.9 million euros.

Operating profit stood at 1,042.9 million euros, 58.3% more than in the previous year, when it reached 658.6 million euros.

As a result of their continued success and expansion programme the group has ordered 183 new Boeing B737-800 aircraft due to be delivered by 2018 and 200 further aircraft between 2019-2023. The company expects to make further savings in the next two years amid falling oil prices.

RYANAIR GROUND WORKERS STRIKE IN MA DRID Ryanair’s ground handling staff have called an indefinite strike at the Madrid-Barajas Airport which got underway last Saturday in protest at the working conditions, abuse and threats to which they are subjected by the airline management.

The strike was endorsed by the unions including the CTA, UGT, CCOO and CGT which say that the company intends to cut handlers salaries by between 20% and 30% despite there being no col-

lective agreement.

The unions also say that, despite the declaration of a 66% increase in profits announced just last week, the company is refusing to negotiate on the matter, either with the works council or with the union executive. They say that the conditions that are being affected include a salary reduction as well as changes to shift patterns, holidays and leave.

They are also extremely unhappy about the shortcomings in safety clothing and personal protective equipment which they say is putting their workers at risk. “Poor tools will mean a poor job which will threaten the safety of workers as well as the passengers that they are serving” said a union spokesman.

The workers say that they want to denounce "the current poor organizational structure, the regular harassment of workers, threatening language, and the written penalty notifications they are subjected to while performing their duties".

TWO VENUES SHARE A BIG DAY OF TENNIS ON THE COSTA BLANCA

Friday May 22nd was a busy day of tennis on the Costa. Two visiting groups of players were out visiting and participating at two different venues.

The first group from Abingdon LTC joined in with the regular morning players at the Montepiedra sports centre. Over 3 hours the 16 players competed in mixed doubles sets with winning pairs playing each other and changing partners and the losing pairs doing the same. After the event the only two unbeaten players were Graham Hensby [Abingdon] and Alison Vos [regular attendee], congratulations to them both. Also thanks to Terry Carter the Abbingdon team organizer who brings his old club friends out to visit most years.

A padel tournament was being held at the same time and afterwards both sets of players enjoyed a BBQ at the club.

The afternoon venue was on the courts at the Campoamor golf club. This tournament involved 3 teams consisting of 3 mixed doubles pairs each. Team 1 consisted of a group of players from Lincoln. Team 2 was called North/South and consisted of a group of friends from Northern and Southern England. Team 3 consisted of players from a tennis group in Guardamar with a couple of players from Campoamor. After 3

hours of competitive mixed the result could not have been much closer.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Strawberries, Cheese and the W hite Bottomed Bumble Bee There was a serious clash on the islands last week. No, I am not talking about the forthcoming Spanish elections, but a ferocious clash between two food festivals in the old town of Santa Maria de Guia in the north west of Gran Canaria.

The youngest food festival upstart, the Strawberry Festival, suddenly announced that they would hold their festival on the same day as the well-established Cheese Festival, which is its senior by 35 years.

Well, you can imagine the shock horror of the townspeople, which I guess would be very similar to the indignation felt by the good ladies of the UK's Women's Institute should the date for an upstart dog show be on the same date as their annual jam making competition. Fur and feathers, if not jam and pickles, would fly. In the strawberries and cheese clash, good old-fashioned Canarian common sense would eventually be applied, with the cheese festival being repeated the following week. Cheese and strawberry lovers could therefore enjoy both. What a beautiful combination too!

The Canary Islands know a thing or two about growing strawberries, with the municipality of Valsequillo being one of the few municipalities on the island of Gran Canaria that doesn't reach the coast. As such, the climate is perfect for growing strawberries, with over one million kilos of strawberries grown each year for local consumption, as well

as for export. Well-tried techniques are used to improve the quality and quantity of the crop, including setting garlic plants around the strawberry plants to ward off various insects that could damage the ripening fruit. White bottomed bumblebees are also recruited to pollenate the flowers on the strawberry fields, but please don’t ask me how the bumblebees came to have white bottoms. The result of all this hard work from Canarian farmers, together with a little help from garlic and white bottomed bumble bees is delicious sweet tasting fruit, the like of which I have not tasted since growing up in rural Lincolnshire, and eating strawberries from my parent’s garden.

As much as I enjoy eating strawberries throughout the year, my mind sometimes goes back to those childhood days when strawberries were only available for a few weeks of each year. How I used to look forward to those summer tea times when, I suspect, I enjoyed them even more due to their seasonal scarcity. Maybe, in some ways, the ease of being able to buy strawberries, raspberries and what used to be other delicacies out of their normal growing season has taken the edge off the enjoyment felt when we knew that we could only enjoy them for a few precious weeks.

As far as possible, we only purchase strawberries grown in Valsequillo, or other parts of the island. Sometimes, stocks are low and we are reduced to purchasing fruit from the local supermarket that has been imported from mainland Spain. The punnets of fruit look delicious enough with huge, red juicy fruit that is tempting to the eye, but are nearly always disappointing. Just one bite into the pallid, tasteless, watery flesh always makes me appreciate the qualities of the genuine Canarian strawberry even more.

A recent news article in a UK newspaper proudly boasted that strawberries are now available for 20 weeks a year, which is seen as a huge advance from just six weeks that was common in the 1990s. Now the UK strawberry season stretches from May to October, with any gaps in supply filled with chilled and often tasteless imports from Morocco, Israel, Jordan and, of course, Spain. I am told that strawberries were seen on the shelves of UK supermarkets as late as December for the first time last year. The secret of the UK growers' success is the increasing use of polytunnels - huge flexible plastic greenhouses that stretch for acres across the British countryside, whereas in the 1990s

there were none. Changing climate too has a part to play in the strawberry growers' success with mild winters and record levels of sunlight.

Back to Gran Canaria, and our plentiful supply of sweet, juicy strawberries for most of the year. I am pleased to report that both food festivals were a huge success and that the good people of Santa Maria de Guia can now enjoy both strawberries and cheese without fear of neighbourhood repercussions, and with grateful thanks to the white bottomed bumble bee.

LOST LOVE story of ukulele legend Formby's fiancee, Preston, Lancashire lass Pat Howson, whom the Wigan born star was set to marry, prior to his death of a heart attack.

Britain's biggest star of the 1940s-50s Formby was engaged to Pat in 1961, but died, aged 56, weeks prior to their wedding in March 1961. Religious Education teacher Pat, died, aged 46, from ovarian cancer, in November 1971.

Formby was engaged to Pat, just weeks after Formby's wife Beryl's death in December 1960.

"The final manuscript of 'Formby's Lost Love' has been sent to a London, Canary Wharf based publisher, upon their request, with the hope of a contract for publication," said Andrew.

LEADER GUARDIA CIVIL OFFICER KILLED IN CRASH ADVERTISING HOTLINE

A Guardia Civil traffic officer was killed on Friday when the motorcycle he was riding was in a head-on collision with a van.

The incident occurred in the Altiplano area, between Yecla and Jumilla.

The emergency services were notified that the victim was unconscious, lying in the road and had a weak pulse. Medical staff attended but could do nothing to save the life of the officer who died in the line of duty.

JosĂŠ Fernando Almagro was 42 years of age, married and had three children. He was based in the traffic department of the Guardia Civil in Cieza.

The AP-7 motorway in the Barcelona area of Olèrdola was closed to traffic on Wednesday, as fire fighters tackled a blaze on a truck that was travelling on the road.

Emergency services were forced to stop traffic in both directions at 13:45 whilst they extinguished the flames, reopening one southbound lane 30 minutes later, reopening a second lane at 15:15.

The fire had spread to neighbouring vegetation resulting in four fire crews attending whilst traffic backed up for 3 kilometres.

Aside from this incident, with increased temperatures heading towards the summer, much of the country is on alert for the spread of forest fires, with motorists also asked to be vigilant at all times and not throwing anything from the vehicle, such as a lit cigarette or even rubbish, which can increase the risk of fire.

23:40 The Secret Life of Your House. Natural history documentary in which leading entomologist George McGavin deliberately infests a house with thousands of creatures that we would normally think of as pests.

The experiment gives an insight into the ecology that exists right under our noses, living around us - and frequently off us. Major pest control companies are reporting a near 50 per cent rise in callouts, and the British Pest Control Association has expressed real concerns about the nation’s ability to control infestations. But George takes a different view. He welcomes them as house guests, marvels at them and watches what they would get up to if humans did not intervene.

After introducing this menagerie to the house - including bedbugs, spiders, mice and cockroaches - he sets them loose for a month to study them.

SPANISH WINES: AMONG THE WORLD’S BEST Spain is the world’s third winemaking country with as many as 17 Spanish wineries among the world’s best 100, according to the list published every year by the World Association of Writers and Journalists of Wines and Spirits (WAWWJ). On the 2014 list, Spain is the country with the largest number of wineries and ranks third in terms of winery awards, only behind the USA and France.

The WAWWJ list shows why Spanish wines are in vogue, the international presence of Spanish wineries growing all the time. Data exports from 2014 point in the same direction.

Winery Awards The highest ranking Spanish winery on the list (6th) is González Byass, the recipient of 167 international awards in 2014. It is followed by Codorníu (8th) with 102 awards and Ramón Bilbao (20th) with 90.

Winemaking tradition On the whole, there are 85 quality winemaking regions in Spain certified with Designations of Origin (DO). On the occasion of the inauguration of the Barcelona International Motor Show prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced that the Volkswagen Group will invest 4.2 billion euros in the country, "probably the largest industrial investment ever made in Spain".

At a lunch with executives from leading car manufacturers on the occasion of the 38th Barcelona International Motor Show, the President of the Government highlighted the contribution made by this sector to the Spanish economy. Spain is the leading European manufacturer of industrial vehicles, the second-leading manufacturer of passenger vehicles in the European Union and the ninth worldwide.

Mariano Rajoy added that the sector is a "prime indicator" of the strength of the economy and is presently showing "the sustained reactivation of our entire industrial sector, and hence of the national economy as a whole". The President of the Government pointed out that in the first quarter of the year, the production of vehicles exceeded 714,000 units - 15.5% up on last year - and exports have grown by 12.3%. Moreover, car registrations have now recorded eight straight quarters of growth.

Rajoy underlined that these positive figures translate into the creation of quality jobs - "the main

national goal" - and in the last 12 months, unemployment has fallen in the industrial sector by some 45,700 people, the number of people in work has increased by 142,500, and that almost 10% of the fall in unemployment in the month of April came from the industrial sector.

He thanked the representatives from the automobile sector for having supported the Spanish economy during the crisis through their investments, "when very few people were committing to us".

The PM then announced that the Volkswagen Group, whose Global Vice-President met with him at Moncloa Palace on Thursday, will invest 4.2 billion euros in our country, "probably the largest industrial investment ever made in Spain". This investment will be made between now and 2019 and will be allocated to equipment, facilities and R&D at the SEAT factories in Martorell (Barcelona) and the Volkswagen factories in Navarre.

"This ambitious project not only guarantees the future of these globally cutting-edge factories, but it also represents an unprecedented endorsement of the leadership of the Spanish automotive-supply industry, where this investment will have a major impact in terms of both activity and employment", he pointed out.

The number of foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system stood at 1,607,883 in April, an increase of 2.85% - or 44,540 National Insurance contributors - compared with the previous month. The increase in contributor numbers to the system was the largest for the month of April in the last 10 years.

When compared with 2014, the number of foreign workers has increased by 2.83% - equivalent to 44,262 more NI contributors. This is the first April since 2008 in which the number of foreign workers has increased year-on-year. Previous years saw declines of up to 10.54% (April 2009).

The highest figures for foreign workers correspond to Romania (288,277), Morocco (202,159), China (91,669) and Ecuador (70,666).

These countries are followed by Italy (69,422), Bolivia (57,266), the United Kingdom (56,648) and Colombia (52,222).

Autonomous Regions

When compared with the previous month, the number of foreign NI contributors in April rose in all autonomous regions except the Canary Islands (-0.68%). The largest increases were posted in the Balearic Islands (16.69%), Andalusia (5.92% and Extremadura (2.78%).

Compared with last year, the number of workers increased in all autonomous regions except Galicia (-0.85%) and Ceuta (-2.84%). The regions with the largest increases in foreign workers were the Balearic Islands (7.1%), the Region of Murcia (5.03%) and the Region of Valencia (4.33%).

The figures recorded for April show that 943,114 of the total foreign citizens registered with the Spanish Social Security system are from countries outside of the European Union, while the remaining 664,769 are from EU countries.

The majority of foreign citizens are registered under the General Regime: 1,352,992 in total, a figure that includes the Special System for Agricultural Workers (207,501) and the Special System for Domestic Workers (207,246). This is followed by the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (250,362), the Special Regime for Seamen (4,254) and the Special Regime for Coal Workers (275).

Most economic sectors saw an increase in foreign workers, both in monthly and annual terms.

Of the total foreign citizens in the system in April, 866,138 are men and 741,746 are women.

Spain's economy minister the country's economic growth is likely to pick up speed and could hit 3.5 percent this year.

Luis de Guindos said Monday that indicators point to an acceleration in the economy, which grew by a robust 0.9 percent in the first quarter compared with the previous threemonth period. He said growth in 2015 as a whole would be closer to 3.5 percent than to the government's previous 2.9 percent prediction.

by MumAbroad.com found that 50% of expat mums in Spain, France, Italy and Germany never want to return to their home country. Overall, 62% of mothers ranked the quality of life better in their adoptive countries, but many felt the education system was worse.

Last Wednesday heralded a great set of results for our 2 VCL teams. In div A, our Jasmines took on the might of local rivals Quesada Lions, and came away with a superb 10-2 victory. With Gladiators sunning themselves down Guardamar beach, it was left to Glosters to fly the flag in the SABA trips Hurricane div.

Unfortunately, against a strong Emerald Isles Victors side, even home advantage could not produce a win, as they went down 4 points to 10.

When I closed my report three weeks ago I said I hoped I might have something to write about the Spanish Nationals and indeed here I am absolutely delighted to be able to report that our team of Dennis Birkett, Brian Patton and Peter Whitehall are the Spanish Nationals Men’s Triples Champions for 2015. In an enthralling final at Quesada, cheered on by our loyal band of supporters, they beat Peter Bonsor’s team 13-12. It was nail biting stuff all the way but our brave warriors held on to the end to claim the title. So well done to them and a big thanks to the supporters who cheered them all the way to victory.

It was soon back to normality as the Herons made the long journey to Monte Mar on Wednesday, 27 May to play the Lords in a VCL match.

Once again the Herons found the going tough and could only manage a win in one of the disciplines, so well done Sheila Whitehall, Andy White and Peter Whitehall 20-15. Overall shots Herons 70 (2 pts) Lords 114 (10 pts).

On Friday, 29 May the Badgers had an away game at El Rancho in a SABA Harrier league match. Always a testing green to play on it was honours even at the finish with three wins each but El Rancho took the extra two points with a better shot difference. Our men's Rink team of Tony French, Andy Leggatt, Les Barber & Ian Kenyon successfully made it through to the Semi Final before being defeated by Chris Collier's San Miguel four.

Unfortunately our ladies Rink team had to concede through illness when the temperature hit 40 degrees!

The Hurricane League Greeners traveled to Monte Mar and made it a very worthwhile trip, playing the Torros they won on three rinks with just enough shots to win the long game too.

EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB A couple of weeks break from league matches gave us a good opportunity for some friendly competition, starting with the ladies travelling to Emerald Isle for bowls and lunch. Thirteen of our members played a 'ladies only' friendly game against Emerald Isle and although we did not have the overall win, the whole aim was to gain experience of playing on 'away' greens and have some fun in the process. Our team included a few new members, including two 'rookies', Diane Yates and Ngaio Baldwin. Neither of them had played 18 ends before but both learned a great deal and did very well. Encouraging comments from Emerald Isle players that both did well and have the makings of good bowlers. Everyone enjoyed the day and we joined our hosts for a meal afterwards, (Husbands and partners who came to give their support were relegated to a separate table!). A return match is planned for October.

A 3-2-1 competition was arranged for the 22nd and 25th of may, 2 rounds to be played each day, however this being changed to one round per day caused, as you would expect,

this caused some confliction of diary dates all round.

Therefore the competition is to be re-arranged in the future, I have to say though, that the rounds we did play were great fun and I hope the re-scheduling is successful.

Friday brought us back to league play and we started by entertaining Country Bowls Badgers, we had great fun in a close run match, with both teams taking 3 rinks and El Rancho the overall shots by 130 to 94, a good result and an improving team. Sponsored by Spanish Life Properties Following on from the Nationals there has still been plenty of bowls with SABA & Valencian Championship league games.

On Wednesday in the VCL the Lions did not fare well against Greenlands Jasmines. Only a win in the triples by William Holtham, Derek Toozer & Jacqui Johnston prevented a clean sweep.

No result for the Tigers who I understand did well, but I didn’t receive a result sheet.

On Friday the Lancasters were at home to the La Marina Pilots. Picking up 11 points to 3. Winning teams were Mike Lamberton, Brian Trinder & John Northend 25-19, Dorothy Benson, Abby Benson & Joe Brinton 19-11, Liz Richardson, Peter Farrell & Phil Bevan 24-14, Tina Brinton, Martin Richardson & Peter Bradbury 21-8. The team of Kevin McKenna, Linda Armstrong & Mark France managed a 13 all draw.

CARP-R-US CLUB NEWS This weeks match was the Clubs Pairs Trophy and for the first time it was fished on the Pantana de Benarres and not the Embalse del Argos as in the past.

Beniarres has been one of the best venues in the past, but since last year it has suffered through lack of water. For some considerable time last year the water level was under 14%, but at the moment it is up to 33%.

The winning pair of Anglers was Andy Foden and Jackie Breslin with a combined total of 38.360kg. The individual winner was Andy Foden with 24.60kg, fishing corn on the pole.

Most of the other anglers fished the feeder using maggot and corn. Derek King and Eddie Badcock were in second place.

Next weeks match on the 4th of June will be round 2 of the Summer series and will be fished on the high numbers of the Eden canal, pegs at 8.00 and fishing from 9.00 to 2.00pm.

The next of our Quiz nights will be held at the Club house on Tuesday the 9th of June starting at 7.30pm. The cost is 1 Euro per person and teams of up to 6 can take part in this fun evening, The next Sunday meeting will be on the 7th of June with the Committee at 10.30 followed by the General meeting at 11.00am.

The Clubs home is at the Bar El Alto La Dolores which is to be found just off the N332 between La Mata and Guardamar.

For this month’s meeting a group of 21 players visited the established course at El Valle taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

The course was in excellent condition and the weather was absolutely perfect.

Unfortunately we had some sad news because due to work commitments our Society Captain Dave Bensley has to return back to the UK and in the interim Andy Jones will deputise until November 2015.

QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY AT RODA

Last Wednesday the Society traveled south inland from the Mar Menor to play Roda. The course was in very good condition and the weather perfect for golf. 20 players competed in an Individual Stableford competition. Roy Kavanagh is getting a reputation of being a dangerous driver. Not with his Big Bertha but with a buggy. This time he nearly ran his playing partner Ian Fogerty down braking sharply inches away from him. There were some good scores on the day and some indifferent ones.

The winner on the day with 33 points was the very consistent David McSweeney and he has to be with a handicap of 8. In second place was West countryman Ron Perkins with 31 points who just pipped John “Robin Hood” King on C/B. In 4th place was Derbyshire lad Darryll Wright. The nearest the Pin

winners were, Brian Smith, Ian Fogerty, John King, Charlie Wallace, and ”smokin” Tony Patterson. The 2´s pot was not won again with over 100€. carried forward to the next game.

After the game the members returned to the society base, the Quesada Country Club for a bit of banter and the prize giving over a drink or two and a tasty buffet kindly laid on.

EL RASO GOLF SOCIETY - By John Fairhurst 16 members and 6 guests travelled down to Roda on 29 May for our monthly game. Oh what a shock; a blustery wind combined with a little rain made it very difficult conditions on what is a long and tricky golf course. The final scores reflected this although most players managed to get a little sunshine on the back nine. 6 guests today and Martin Rogers playing his first game with the Society managed to accrue 34 points which, were he a member, he would have won the competition. He was also nearest the pin on Hole 11. No-one managed to get onto the second hole in 1 but Iain Ralph was nearest on hole 7 and Robin Richards won hole 13. The best front with 12 points was won by Dave Nicholls and the best back with a creditable 16 points was won by Jan Shorley on countback. Third today was John Hill with 26 points on countback whilst Iain Ralph came second on his own with 28 points. The winner today was our Captain, Ken Brett,

with 29 points .

After the match we travelled back to the Olde 9th on Quesada where our host Grant provided a very welcome and tasty repast.

After a number of years, La Marina Golf Society returned to Roda for our latest competition.

The course was as testing as many members remembered. It also looks a little ‘behind’ other courses in it’s condition. We understand that this is partly due to the lack of rain that has affected many courses this year.

Within the Stableford competition, some members were playing their matches for the Individual Knockout competition for 2015. Congratulations go to Mick Cook and Pete Wootton and commiserations to the losers from what were very close contests. In fact, a count back situation was needed to ascertain a winner in one match!

Despite the wind getting up, the large numbers of members and guests enjoyed the day including the buffet supplied by Helena & Paolo at La Marina Sports Centre, our 19th hole. It was here that the prizes for the day were presented.

Thursday 28 May, a smaller turnout today for the team game Greensomes Stableford pairs. This was due partly to the course undergoing hollow tining and having to play on temporary greens.

Nevertheless, those who did play enjoyed a day of sunshine and made the best of the situation.

In first place was the pairing of Robin Richards and Gill Gordon with an impressive score of 49 points. With John Hill and Norman Woods beating Sue Gillett and Terry O’Regan into second place with 45 points on c/b.

CLAPTON’S GOLF SOCIETY - MAY MEDAL AT ALENDA

Alenda welcomed us for our May Stapleford Competition and on arrival I was informed the greens had been hollow-tined a few days earlier. This being said, with the fairways in great shape, the green condition did not impact the scoring.

SAN MIGUEL GOLF SOCIETY AT LA FINCA Thirty-nine members and a guest attended SMGS’s monthly visit to La Finca to play a stableford competition. The course had recently been subjected to hollow tining of the greens and scarifying of the fairways and clearly needed more time to recover. However, such complications didn’t impede some players from posting superb scores, most noteworthy Darren Hancock, Mick Cook, Robin Eastman and Noel Bannon, with the former two worthy of special mention, Mick shooting a gross 73 and Darren a best score of the day (and possibly the year so far) gross 71, both playing off a handicap of 6. Spectacular stuff!!

One singles match and one doubles match were held in the annual SMGS match play competitions, with Mike Jordan overcoming Alan MacDonald 4 and 2 in the former, so moving in to the semi-finals of the competition, and Ken Flaherty and Phil de Lacy beating husband and wife team John and Ellen Drakesmith 3 and 2 in the latter.

Prior to today’s round SMGS handed over 250 euros to Stuart Rennie, , as its contribution to funds collected for cancer research on behalf of the Linda Rennie Memorial Trophy, which took place on May 17th. This brings SMGS’s contribution to both local and international charities in the last 2 years to some 4,000 euros, with donations to worthy causes having become an integral part of what our society is about and an indication of our member’s generosity.

Returning to the golf, the day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Brian Mulligan (33 on CB), 3rd Ellen Drakesmith (33 on CB), 2nd John Trehy (33 on CB), and 1st, recently making winning something of a habit, Chris Hamblett with 36 points.

Silver Category: 4th Glen Rapley (34), 3rd Mike Jordan (35), 2nd Ken Flaherty (37) and 1st, with a superb score and the second best of the day, Noel Bannon with 42 points.

Gold Category: 4th Ivan Hanak (36), 3rd Robin Eastman, 2nd Mick Cook with a fantastic 41 points, and 1st, with an even more magnificent 43 points, Darren Hancock.

Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Bjorn Pettersson (3), Darren Hancock (6), Alan MacDonald (13) and Ellen Drakesmith (16).

Nearest the pins in 3 on holes 7 (Gold), 11 (Silver) and 12 (Bronze) were won by Mick Cook, Ken Flaherty and Norman McBride respectively.

The Abacus was won by Jenny Staines.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY By Mike Chapman Firstly congratulations to Alan Douglas for scoring his first hole in one on the Par 3 tenth hole during the Los Hombres game on Sunday.

Our social clubs first game of the week on Monday was a Mulligan with two additional shots allowed on the front nine and a further two on the back nine. It was a welcome return to the winners enclosure for our President Doug Wright who took first spot with an excellent 38 pts. There were three players on 37 pts but with only three prizes on offer the unlucky one missing out was Tom Hardie who was beaten on a count back by both Joyce McClusky who claimed second place ahead of Lindsay Forbes in third.

On Wednesday it was the final round of our Monthly Medal Championship with the winner being the player with the most points from their best 4 of 6 medal rounds. There were 6 points available to the winner on the day, 5 points for second down to 2 points for fifth place in both the Ladies and Gents Division. Olga Douglas was in an unassailable position in the Ladies Division but there were half a dozen in contention for the Gent's top three places. Prizes were also available on the day in both Categories as usual. Conditions were ideal for golf and it was no surprise that there were some good scores being returned with the championship leader board constantly changing. It was Barry Holtham who was triumphant when the final results were confirmed coming home with a net 70 and taking 6 pts for the second time in succession thereby overtaking the long time leader Lindsay Forbes who returned a net 75. However Mike Chapman's net 72

enabled him not only to hold off the challenge of Geoff Biggerstaff, John Collins and Bryan Neal but also tie with Lindsay on 16 pts. It was therefore necessary to decide overall 2nd place on a count back of points secured over the 4 games. With Mike's total being made up of 6, 5 4 and 1 compared to Lindsay's 6, 5, 3 and 2 it was Mike who was awarded second place by virtue of the 4 pts gained on the final day which in itself was won on a count back. Geoff Biggerstaff went through to the semi final with a 4 & 2 victory over Bryan Neal. He will now play Lindsay Forbes who was taken to a third extra hole before defeating Tom Hardie. It was a very close contest with Lindsay making eagles to win holes 7 and 9. The remaining members played a Waltzer (3-21) which was won with a very good score of 88 pts by the team of Ron Phipps, Alan Douglas, Mike Chapman and Allen McClusky.

BULL FLANAGAN GOLF SOCIETY IN ALICANTE For their May meeting 32 society members travelled to Alicante to challenge the Seve Ballesteros designed course of 6 each par 3s, par4s and par 5s.

Many new trees were being planted around the course and this could mean points would be harder to get.

As usual the course was in excellent playing condition and the weather was commensurate to ensuring a good days golf was going to be experienced by all players even if the result did not match the days outing.

After the match all players returned to the Bull Flanagan in Quesada for the prize winner’s presentation where members and guests were able take the opportunity to sample a refreshing drink before having a choice of a free lunch.

Only ten players managed to get a score greater than 30 points leaving the chasing pack behind on 28 or less and todays winner was Martin Collins scoring a creditable 37 points. Second and third places went to Keith Smith and Bill Peters scoring 36 and 35 points respectively. The Captain Mick McGrath assisted the Secretary with the presentation ceremony and made comment on the success of the days event and how well it had been supported and he also thanked Chris and his staff and asked members to show their appreciation in the usual manner for their continued support and excellent service and quality of meals available on match days.

The Secretary reflected on another successful society day’s golf and thanked everyone for their attendance and concluded reminding members that the June match would be the Anne McGrath memorial Perpetual Trophy at Vistabella. Also the Steakhouse will be playing the week before at Marquesa and interested members should get in touch with Brian Smith.

We celebrated our May Open Day with 52 players at La Serena Golf.

The golf course as always was in perfect condition and it is a credit to Wayne and all the staff at La Serena. Thanks are due to the staff in the shop and to Camillus and Phillip who had all the cards prepared in advance and their organisation enabled a smooth running of the event.

The two tee start has enabled us to reduce waiting times and have a full house at the presentation. Our results; NTP's Liam Powell, Eddie Wall, Gordon McCadden, Afrian Skinner, Camillus Fitzpatrick and Denis McCormack. Category 2, winner Roy Sutherland 38, second Bev Ellender 36 and third Noel Geoghegan 35. Category 1, winner Dean McCluskey 37, second Camillus Fitzpatrick 35 and third John O'Brien 34. The gross prize was won by mister consistent himself of the "I am not hitting the ball too well fame" Denis McCormack with 32 points. Runner-up overall, Damian Corvan with 38 and the winner on the day with a fabulous 42 points Terry Lewis, happy new handicap .

We had the presentation of monthly medals which have been sourced from the Trophy Centre in Dublin. A beautiful sterling silev medal.

DAWN START FOR TMGS AT LAS PINAILLAS (ALBACETE) It’s never easy to get up at 6,30 in the morning to play a round of golf! lo and behold for one member it proved to be just a little too early, in fact, the Captain and handicap secretary were in danger of missing out on this fantastic venue after having missed the bus at Playa Flamenca, they drove to the second pick-up point at Ciudad Quesada. A journey of a little more than 2 hours is well worth it when you arrive at this jewel of a course known as Las Pinaillas. This is an annual event, “the Pinaillas Cup” is sponsored by founder member John Whitaker and his wife Marg. The course is always found to be in great condition and the greens can be very tricky to read. After a wonderful day’s golf we enjoyed a superb menu del dia in the clubhouse. Can you believe that all of this for just €55 per person!

Normally the results here are not that high ( due to the tricky green) however 2 players managed to break par easily, in the visitors category 29 points was good enough for Lennart Holmberg to take 2nd place on lower handicap, this was far short of 1st placed T. SKymoen’s 38 points.

Playing for the main trophy, there were several players around the 30points mark, but to take 3rd place with 31points was Sandra Twentyman, just 1point ahead came Glen Gooch, but this came nowhere near the massive 40points scored by Chris Gray, Chris has been in a rich vein of form lately and has graciously decided to return to Erland for a while so that someone else has a chance.

The N.T.P.’s were won by; hole 3 John Hiller, hole7 Alan Rixson,hole12 Kjell Johansson and hole 17 Joe Dean. After removing all of the winner’s cards a draw was made for a free green fee and 4 very good bottles of wine donated by a local bodega.

ALFIES GOLF SOCIETY – La Ronda at Hacienda Riquelme 30 golfers from the Society headed to Hacienda Riquelme and were met with beautiful conditions for a day’s golf. Having had coffees, and collecting their scorecards and buggies, practice was undertaken by the members and guests before they set off on what we all hoped was a good day’s golf. The course was in excellent condition, and the greens were superb, if not a bit firm.

Scoring on the day was average for the year with 34 points being the top score, and with 2 members having this total, the winner was decided on countback.

Our winner on the day was Gordon Cowan, with the runner’s up trophy going to our President, Ian Connell.
