By Nancy Klein Crescendo International Choir had a busy June, giving two concerts and participating in the Armed Forces Day event in the Orihuela Cathedral last Saturday. On June 10th, Crescendo gave a concert at La Siesta Church in Torrevieja. Attendees twere treated to a concert of 15 songs, including popular tunes like Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen and I have a Dream by ABBA along with popular Spanish tunes songs like Besame Mucho and Amapola. More than 300 Euros was raised for the Evangelical Church that holds services there. The following weekend, Crescendo Choir gave a concert for 100 people at Casa Contenta, a tapas bar and restaurant in Rojales. At this concert, the choir also sang 15 different pieces of music, including Let it Be and Imagine by the Beatles, Time to Say Goodbye, The Rhythm of Life and ‘Cross the Wide Missouri. Four Spanish songs were among the group’s repertoire, including La Bella Lola and Clavelitos. Last Saturday, Crescendo International Choir participated in the Orihuela Costa RBL Armed Forces Day service at the 13th Century Orihuela Cathedral. This historic cathedral is called La Santa iglesia Catedral del Salvador y Santa Maria de Orihuela in Spanish. The service was led by Pastor Keith Brown and Father Emilo Sanchez from the cathedral. Parts of the service were conducted in

English and other parts in Spanish. Organised by the Royal British Legion, Orihuela Costa and District Branch, the purpose of the service was to support and pray for the work of those who serve in the British and Spanish Armed Forces, including sailors, soldiers, airmen and here in Spain for the Guardia Civil and National and local police forces. Among the attendees were several members of the scarlet uniformed Chelsea Pensioners, as well as one veteran who participated in the D-Day invasion at Normandy Beach in France. The service included prayers, bible readings and addresses by both ministers as well as the singing of hymns such as Eternal Father Strong to Save and Make Me a Channel of Your Peace. The Royal British Legion Concert Band also played several pieces of music and a solo was performed by Valerie Lynch. Later, people stood for the playing of the Spanish National Anthem and the singing of the National Anthem of the United Kingdom. Finally, both ministers gave a blessing to end the service. All in all, it was a busy year for Crescendo International Choir. The choir starts rehearsals again Monday, September 9 at Sacko’s Bar in Plaza International, in the El Limonar Urbanization in Torrevieja. Newcomers are welcome to join. We especially encourage men to join us. Rehearsal times are from 5:30 to 8 pm on Mondays. The choir’s music director, Irena Oliva, is Spanish, as is our pianist, Antonio Guillen. Is Orihuela Costa’s Civic Centre in danger of collapse?

Monday 1st - Sunday 7th July, 2019 One centre user told me that they simply want an assurance from the council that the building is still safe to use.

It seems ironic that after so long in discussion the Cruz Roja should finally open a part time office on the Orihuela Costa in a building that seems to be in danger of falling down, a building that, despite opening to the public ten years ago, is still, we understand, without a ‘Certificate of Occupation’ and where neither the insurers nor the local government can agree on whose responsibility it is to repair it’s crumbling structure. The fact that they are in situ, however, should provide some confidence to the 15 groups and 200 + users of the centre that, should the building fall down around their ears, there will be at least someone in the proximity who can carry out first aid. I don’t profess to be an expert in buildings and structures but even I, a complete novice in these matters, can see that the Centro Civico Ramon de Campoamor is in urgent need of structural repairs. There are an absolute multitude of cracks wherever you look in the building, in every single room, which I doubt that even the most credulous of us would put down to the foundations settling in, certainly not after a period of ten years. The area directly outside the main door provides all the evidence that anyone should need, a gaping hole of about 3 metres in length, perhaps best described as a sink hole, that has also taken a good part of the pathway and the underbuild with it. But in the event that no action has been carried out by the authorities we can only assume that we shouldn’t be concerned. We know that there have been at least two inspections undertaken by council surveyors in recent months, both of who left the building without providing an explanation or any clarification, so we can only assume they both consider the structure, and the welfare of it’s users, to be secure.

But what we would like to know are the plans that the authorities might have to carry out the necessary renovation, if for nothing other than our peace of mind and that of the groups and the individuals that use the facility and who currently feel they are putting their safety at risk every time they enter the building.

There’s Fun ‘n’ Games down in the Valley The first meeting of the Branch at its new venue proved extremely successful. Following the formal part where the Chairman updated members on recent changes to the Legion line up, members settled into an evening of fun and games. As well as the “normal” darts, table skittles and shove ha’penny (50 cents) there were the more unusual games. One member, George, correctly

guessed the weight of a bottle of whiskey. The “rat down a drain pipe” grew great crowds of participants, as did the “duck shooting gallery” and fairground “grabber” machine. Rhoda, who “downed” the most ducks in the shooting gallery surprised herself at her fantastic shooting ability, beating some members who thought they were “crack shots”!! Our new venue gave us lots of space to display all the various games.

The Branch meets on the third Tuesday of each month (except August) at El Fogon, Hondón de los Frailes 7 p.m.for 7.30 p.m. and visitors and guests are most welcome. A summer party is planned for 18th July and for information on this event and any other Branch matters, please contact our secretary on hondonvalley.secretary@rbl.community or go to our website: www.britishlegion.org.uk/branches/hondon-valley.

On Monday 24th June HELP´s President Christine Baillie made the second presentation by the Charity this year of a cheque for €3000 this time to the Nuns who run Casa Cuna la Anunciacion in Sucina. Received by a very grateful Sister Matilda who runs the project which helps care for mothers and children in the Murcia and Cartagena regions, some of whom come from violent relationships and many who for one reason or another have been disowned by their families. The project runs a day nursery for young children which allows their mothers to work knowing the children are safe and well cared for. The nursing mothers, many of whom come from countries outside Spain, can live in until they find some accommodation of their own are able to leave their babies in the care of the Nuns if they have jobs.

Tranquility Ladies Lodge Reach Out On Friday 21st June a group of Ladies from The Lodge of Tranquility Ladies Masonic presented a new Clothes Washing Machine and Toaster to Extiende La Mano. A previous washing machine, which was located next to the office area, had been grinding on worn bearings for some time and the cost to repair was more than the cost of a new machine. The Ladies arrived in the nick of time and brought some normality back to the office. The Comedor uses toasters every day providing part of the Breakfast meal and these need frequent replacement due to the high useage. After a tour of the facility in Calle Bella Antonia, the photo shows Wendy Sharpe, Past Master of the Lodge with some of the Lodge Ladies receiving a Certificate of thanks from Lynn Young who looks after the Homeless and

Comedor in Reach Out. Our thanks is conveyed to all members of the Lodge for their sterling work and wish them every future success.

Sister Matilda spoke of their hope of moving to new premises which has been donated to them in Yecla near Albacete saying that the donation from HELP will be used to make any repairs needed. Once again the decision to give money to Casa Cuna was made by the membership of HELP after being put forward by one of the charity´s members. It is HELP´s policy to donate money to help others in the Murcia region from money raised by the volunteers during the previous year. If you could give a few hours of your time to helping others please call on 968 570 059 or call in at our office in Los Alcazares. We look forward to hearing from you.

Road Safety in Prisons The General Secretary of Penitentiary Institutions (IIPP), Ángel Luis Ortiz and the General Director of the DGT, Pere Navarro, launched a campaign to bring road safety and driver training to those serving prison sentences. The DVSA also updated its guidance on maintaining roadworthiness to say tyres aged 10 years and older should not be used on the front axles of heavy goods vehicles, as well as buses and coaches. A growing body of evidence includes research, commissioned by the Department for Transport and published last week, which shows ageing tyres suffer corrosion which could cause them to fail. As would be expected in consultations like this, some people think the proposals don´t go far enough, and that older tyres should be banned on all vehicles. Even a car which suffers a loss of control due to a tyre failure becomes a potentially lethal projectile on the road, and any subsequent crash could result in multiple injuries or fatalities in the same way a heavy goods or passenger carrying vehicle could. The advice as to when to replace tyres varies, but many experts believe that they should be replaced earlier than every 10 years, and of course in the event of damage or wear they should be replaced immediately. If your tyres are 5 years old then closer monitoring is recommended. You can check the age of your tyres by a 4-digit code embossed on the side. The code “1413” for example denotes that the tyre was manufactured in week 14 of the year 2013. If you can only find a 3-digit code then these tyres were manufactured before 2000 and should be replaced immediately. UK Considering Old Tyre Ban A consultation period began this week which could result in new laws being rushed through the statutes in the UK, banning tyres more than 10 years old on some vehicles. If the plans get approval, the new laws could come into force as early as next year, and would ban older tyres from heavy goods and passenger carrying vehicles, such as buses and minibuses. The consultation follows a campaign by Frances Molloy, whose son Michael died in a coach crash in 2012. The subsequent enquiry blamed a 19-year-old tyre. Road Safety Minister Michael Ellis said, “There is increasing evidence that age affects the safety of tyres, which is why I think older tyres should not be used on large vehicles.” The consultation, which runs for 10 weeks, asks whether older tyres should be banned on buses, coaches, lorries and minibuses as well as whether this ban should be extended to taxis and private hire vehicles. Following the concert José María Pérez Sánchez presented the guest band with a commemorative plaque for their impeccable participation in the festival. A representative of the Kungälv School then presented the Horadada Musical Union with the flag of Sweden, the badge of the band, as well as a souvenir plaque. The Musical Union Horadada thanked the musicians and dancers of Sweden for their involvement and participation in the festival, as well as for the help and collaboration of the City Council of Pilar de la Horadada.

Lack of police denounced in San Miguel After repeated calls from a homeowner on Friday night the Guardia Civil took 70 minutes to respond to a house robbery in San Miguel, causing the complainants to publically express their concerns over the lack of protection of the 7,000 resident of San Miguel de Salinas at night, a feature that is well known amongst the criminal fraternity.

The mayor added his thanks on behalf of the City Council once again commending the Horadada Musical Union for their contribution to the cultural life of Pilar de la Horadada.

The house was broken into through a window after the robbers gained entry to a first floor balcony. On entering the property they injured one of the dogs and completely ransacked the house stealing, wrecking much of the furniture and stealing jewellery worth 1,000 euros.

The mayor, Eduardo Dolón says that he has tried to please all of the new councillors and especially the socialist group, and, if there are no last minute objections, it should all go through unopposed. There will also be increases in the attendance allowances for those councillors who are not included in the salary scale. Attendance at board meetings, two a month, will increase to 150 euro while the attendance at plenums from 238 to 250. Information commissions will rise from 158 to 175 euros and government boards to 200 euros.

The mayor of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitation Martinez, and the councillor for Police, Ángela Gaona, met with some of the officers last week where, for the fourth consecutive year, agents will patrol the coastal perimeter of the municipality in their endeavours to protect the residents and the holidaymakers using the coastal areas. Martinez explained that this police unit "is a pioneer, and unique in the Region of Murcia, as it attempts to bring the local police closer to the people, offering a more effective, direct and accessible service. In addition, she highlighted the impressive results that these officers have achieved since its implementation four years ago.

Musical Union Horadada celebrates the summer solstice The theft was discovered at about 11pm when one of the family members returned home from the cinema. Although the municipality has a Civil Guard office it is not manned overnight which is also the case with the Local Police so every time a police response is required during silent hours residents have to await the arrival of agents from Torrevieja, located 13 kilometres away.

Torrevieja council salaries increased by 10% The PP and opposition have agreed a 10% salary increase for recently appointed councillors that will mean an income of 3,500 gross euros per month for the councillors running government departments and around 3,100 for the spokesman of the PSOE, Andrés Navarro, and the spokeswoman of VOX, Carolina Vigara. The PP will have 19 advisers, 15 in the government team, and 4 employed by the party. There will also be two further PSOE and one Los Verdes and, Sueña Torrevieja advisers. It is expected that the new rates of payment will be ratified at an extraordinary plenary session to be held on Monday 1 July. Last Saturday at el Parque 30 de Julio, the Horadada Musical Union hosted a festival of bands organized by the Horadada Musical Union, which was attended by a guest band from the Kungälv School in Sweden, the Brazzeriet Metal Ensemble and the Sanna Dancers of Sweden. Among those attending the event, a varied repertoire of music and dance, was the mayor José María Pérez Sánchez, the councillor of Fiestas, Susi Sánchez and a number of other councillors from the Municipal Government. When subterfuges seek to steal your story … Of the more than seven billion (last time I counted) people in the world, amazingly no two of us are the same. Therefore every human is a unique once off creation. We all have our strong points and our weaknesses – but each one of us has our very own story. When somebody tries to steal your story because you did something of value it is sad and does not reflect well on the thief – and people do know. It has happened to me a couple of times during my lifetime, so I’ll give you one example of what I am talking about. In 1994 my good buddy, Joe Bardon and I set out on what was probably my greatest trip of all time. (Ooooppps, sorry Darling … I meant with the exception of our honeymoon!) Joe and I went to the World Cup in America. I still get goose-pimples anytime I see a clip of Chris Hughton’s 11th minute goal when we beat Italy in Giant’s Stadium New York. But this story is not about the soccer. One night Joe and I wandered into a place called ‘Denim & Diamonds’ and I encountered line dancing for the first time. I never tried the dancing, but I could see it was a ‘craze’ and I immediately saw the potential for making a few bob back home. Pamela and I owned a club at the time. There were VCR video teaching tapes on sale there and I bought one of each, brought them home, converted them from American system to our own and the following week we advertised line-dancing classes in the Squash & Leisure Centre in Mullingar. I had two of our gym instructors learn the routine. One of our ‘teachers’ was particular brilliant – as she had a great beat and an ear for music, as well as being a great step-aerobics instructor. She also owned a cowboy hat! If only the customers knew that our girls were only one class ahead of the people they were teaching! We were first with line-dancing and it really took off. Our function room could accommodate a class of 40: We did two classes, three nights a week, at three quid a head. We got loads of free advertising as my ‘Denim & Diamonds’ story was carried in two local papers.

Mayor enthusiastic about new term By Andrew Atkinson EXCLUSIVE LOS Montesinos Mayor José Manuel Butron says the people of the town continue to have confidence in the PSOE - 28 years after first being sworn into office. "Twenty eight years ago I was elected to office for the first time in Los Montesinos - my village - a town where, after segregation from Almoradí, we held the first Municipal elections as a people," Mayor Butron told me. The PSOE success in the 2019 May elections saw José Butron once again retain his position as Mayor. "We govern. The people have given us their confidence. And in the last elections - with much more support," said Mayor

Like I said one of our instructors took to it like a duck to water. Donna (not her real name) had moved to Mulingar with her new partner to start a new life. We put Donna on commission on top of her wages and she was making serious money. ‘Much wants more’, and Donna got greedy. Our top line-dancing teacher and her partner got in with a DJ/Aerobics-teacher/chancer and they secretly came up with a plan to steal the gold. Donna brought home one of our tapes at a time and her DJ friend got it copied. Then Donna disappeared without notice or even a ‘goodbye.’ These things happen and by now line-dancing was being flogged to death all over the country: Anyway, it was only a fringe part of our business. We carried on with our other teacher – and in fact, an enthusiastic pupil came on board as a teacher and did very well. (A footnote here is that Carmel lost two stone weight-wise – illustrating the benefit of dancing exercise). Then one day I was driving along in my little automobile, listening to the radio … when suddenly I recognised the voice; DONNA!! Radio 3 was doing an interview with this “revolutionary” line-dancing teacher who was booked into halls all over Laois and Offaly and was “Ireland’s first Line-dancing teacher!” It gets better … Donna proceeded to tell my story verbatim – only I never got mentioned. She told how she was the one who went to New York and studied the dancing in Denim & Diamonds. (The only trip Donna ever made was from Ballyfermot to Mullingar,) I had to pull my car into the side of the road! It backfired on Donna because several listeners knew the real story – partly through the extensive squash network of the time. Discredited

Butron. The Vega Baja town of Los Montesinos, Alicante, has a population of less than 5,000 people, being Spanish born and foreign residents. Mayor Butron, the only Mayor in Los Montesinos since the town gained Independence, said: "It is a lot of responsibility but we hope not to disappoint - and give our best. "The people of Los Montesinos have given great support." Los Montesinos is a town with ambitions, moving forward, and Mayor Butron said: "I hope to achieve all the goals and challenges that we have raised in this term. We have the desire - and we renew our commitments." Mayor Butron and his Councillors are ready for the challenges ahead, after being elected for the next four years, to serve the community. "We have a great team and we will work to improve the lives of our neighbours - for social justice - and progress for everyone," said Mayor Butron. The seven socialist councillors have taken office, with José Manuel Butrón Sánchez Mayor of Los Montesinos, for the period 2019-2023. "We start a new term with great enthusiasm for the challenges ahead - of which we will achieve - with your participation and support. Thanks for the confidence," said Mayor Butron.

Los Montesinos Mayor José Manuel Butron (centre) and his team of Councillors

On being sworn in as Mayor for the first time 28 years ago, Mayor Butron said: "It remains a very special day. The day I was picking up my wife from the hospital, following the birth of our daughter."

Donna and her conspirators lost any good name they might have had. The point is that Donna had no need to steal my story. She would have done fine without it – because she was very good in her own right. Nobody can rewrite history – because the people always know, or will find out. It is hard to believe that it is 25 years this year since that glorious summer in America - and 25 years since Joe and I wandered into Denim & Diamonds. I wonder if Donna will throw a party to celebrate my foresight. I wonder shall I be invited to celebrate what I launched in 1994. What do you think …?!! Don’t Forget The best thing you can ever give someone is a chance.

North Carolina and Neil Diamond to Benijofar By Andrew Atkinson EXCLUSIVE BENIJOFAR businessman Martin Ronald Dean took a gamble with life as a teenager - and ended up travelling the world - as a Croupier! In Pt 2 of a fascinating story he talks exclusively to Andrew Atkinson. Having sailed the waters of the Martin got Caribbean on the cruiseliner The on well with Sovereign of The Seas, Martin's whirlthe Mafia. wind ventures continued when he met a girl from North Carolina. "It was fantastic! An amazing place to be. I was invited to a wedding while in North Carolina - with 150 guests when I arrived I thought I was at The White House! "A huge building, with stone pillar columns at the entrance of the property. Me, a lad from Salford, Manchester," said Martin, born in Lower Kersal. Martin, who penned his own songs as a teenager, and formed his own band, aged 16, said: "I did karaoke at the wedding - and was told I sounded like Neil Diamond!. "Amazingly, I was listening to the radio one day, and there was a competition to sing Neil Diamond songs - which I entered. I sang 'Hello Again'. And 'Forever in Blue Jeans'. I came second - with the winner being a lady!." Undettered, Martin who went to see Neil Diamond in concert in North Carolina, said: "I wasn't that impressed to be honest. Got bored - went to the bar - and got drunk!." Martin's journey continued after spending six weeks in North Carolina - working on the cruiseliner The Song of America - finding himself in New York: "I stayed at The Marriott Hotel on Times Square, and visited Broadway, while in America," said Martin. And during a spell in Rome, Martin saw one of his favourite groups, The Everly Brothers: "They were supporting Simon & Garfunkel in concert," said Martin. "During the time working on the cruiseliner on the journey from New York to Bermuda, when the ship was not in international

Monday 1st - Sunday 7th July, 2019 waters, playing in the casinos was forbidden. "A journey took three and a half days - meaning the money you could earn, mainly in huge tips, dried up," said Martin, who stayed at Bermuda's capital Hamilton. Martin recalled the time he was a croupier on The Nordic Empress, and Ernie Wise was on board, at the time of his comedy partner Eric Morecambe's untimely death, in May 1984. "A tragic thing happened on that ship. I was dealing blackjack, when Ernie Wise appeared. He wasn't playing at the table, he was walking by with friends," recalled Martin. "One of my colleague dealers inappropriately sang the Morecambe & Wise famous song 'Bring Me Sunshine', and shouted 'maybe I can be your new partner!'. "It was so disrespectful. Nobody spoke to him for weeks. He was 'sent to Coventry'," said Martin. Amongst a tally of stars that Martin has seen, includes legendary singer Cuban-American Gloria Estefan: "I found it somewhat strange that she invited one of the lady croupiers for drinks. "The croupier in question was a stunning looking woman. Beautiful, gorgeous. Gloria Estefan even asked her to babysit her kids! I never did find out why?," said Martin. Manchester United fan Martin also recalls his youth days, when he was more interested in going to watch the United stars training, than going to school. "As a big United fan I have fond lasting memories of watching the players training. A mate of mine knew all the players, and they all knew him, by name! "They didn't know me, by name, but to be with my mate was fantastic. Once we got a lift home from the training by United's captain Bryan Robson! "The players at the time included Martin Buchan, Gordon McQueen, and Lou Macari, a nice man. The manager was 'Big' Ron Atkinson who I remember told my mate to get off the players coach one day. But the players loved him," said Martin. "Martin Buchan was getting boxes of brand new football boots for the players out of his car boot one day and my mate asked him for a pair, in which he was told to 'bugger off'," laughed Martin. Martin, who has met many world stars throughout his career in the casinos, spoke about legendary footballer, iconic Manchester United and Northern Ireland star George Best.

"As a croupier at Albion Sporting Club, Salford, George Best came in one night - 'pi**** out of his head' - and was trying to cheat at the roulette table! "George was living his flamboyant lifestyle image, with a girl on each arm, but in reality he was a complete nightmare," said Martin. Casinos and gambling have their success stories - but on the other side of the coin - losses too: "The biggest loss I can recall was a client losing 'everything'. "It was in Bournemouth - the client had nothing left - so much so he ended up arriving at the casino in his pyjamas!," said Martin. Martin's croupier lifestyle, images that of Mafia movies, of which he revealed an insight: "I had an interview in London and landed a job to work in Moscow, to train Russians how to play roulette and blackjack," said Martin. "I had to learn the Russian language - and came across the Mafia. They loved me, being a Manchester lad," said Martin. "You watch the movies with the Mafia - gun scenes, of which I witnessed - such as placing guns on tables. The Mafia placed a gun on a table - and told me they'd shoot me - if they didn't get blackjack!," said Martin, who lived in Semyonovskaya. "While I was there the Mafia groups comprised of the Government Mafia; Izmailovsky Mafia, Chetzin Mafia, and Malova Mafia. I met the 'main man' Anton, and Lucia. We spoke about Manchester United. The Godfather - lovely people," said Martin. Martin, who worked at the Rendevous Hotel and The Elite, in Moscow, said: "They pulled their guns out all the time. "I was in Moscow for two years. I got on very well with them. The Mafia were nice people."

Costa Beaches get ready for high season The former councillor for beaches, Luisa Boné, has highlighted the improvements that have been made on the coast for people who suffer from reduced mobility but who still wish to use the beach and the sea. There are now four accessible bathing points, located on the beaches at Cala Bosque, La Glea, Barranco Rubio and Cala Capitán. With the arrival of summer and the high season, which will welcome thousands of visitors and holidaymakers to Orihuela Costa these are not the only improvement that they can expect to find. The lifeguard service is now in full operation on 11 beaches, all of which have also been equipped with new lifeguard offices, toilets and well equipped first aid posts. Many of the beach walkways and footbaths have also been refurbished or replaced s have many of the beach bars and the urban furniture. Just last week both Luisa Boné and Emilio Bascuñana, the Orihuela mayor, took part in the traditional ceremony of raising the first blue flag on Campoamor (La Glea) beach, one of 12 that have been awarded to the coast, along with a further 5 Quality Q Flags. The mayor said that he was delighted that Orihuela had been able to maintain its excellent standard on all 11 beaches, at Punta Prima, Cala Bosque, La Caleta, Cala Capitán, Aguamarina, Campoamor, Rubio Ravine, Cala Estaca, Cala Mosca, Cala Cerrada and Mil Palmeras in addition to Campoamor Marina. He stressed that "Orihuela is the municipality in the Valencian Community with the highest number of Blue Flags, and the second most in Spain, something that demonstrates the clear commitment of the city to the coast, ensuring that the municipality continues to be one of the most attractive destinations in the country.” Bascuñana stressed that "Orihuela is the municipality of the Valencian Community with the largest number of Blue Flags, and

the second in Spain, something that demonstrates the clear commitment of our city along the coast, which makes our municipality one of the destinations most attractive tourist ". The mayor was accompanied by councillors Rafael Almagro and Sabina-Goretti Galindo, Luisa Boné and Ángel Noguera, as well as the pedáneo mayor of Campoamor, Raúl Fernández. A similar ceremony took place in Torrevieja on Thursday where mayor Eduardo Dolón, and the councillor for Beaches, Antonio Vidal, raised a flag at Cala Piteras in respect of the accreditation at five beaches, Cala Piteras , Los Náufragos, El Cura, Los Locos and Cabo Cervera. He lamented that a Blue Flag had been lost at La Mata, but said that his team has already begun to work toward its recovery, expecting that in 2020 Torrevieja will have blue and Q quality flags on all its beaches, as it has been the case for many years.

Over 40 people, representing 7 different nationalities, were present in Golf Sun last Monday when the Cabo Roig Business Association held it’s Annual General Meeting. Outgoing President Ray Kearney gave a short report in which he confirmed that the Association was now fully legal after which the elections took place to form the new Executive Committee. Brian Kiernan was elected as the Association President after which he took to the chair. Ciaran Twomey came in as Vice President with Karl Court and Niall Burns then elected as Secretary and Treasurer respectively. Among the number of topics under discussion the most pressing was felt to be that of the illegal traders (manteros) who are operating in the area, seemingly with the approval of the Policia Local. Members reported police presence along the strip but absolutely no enforcement action, despite the increasing numbers and an escalation in the aggression of the manteros toward bar owners and the public. It was recommended that a question on the matter should be tabled at the next Municipal Plenary by representatives of the Association. Other matters discussed included the general cleanliness of the area, the overdue cutting of palm trees and the overnight presence of an ambulance. Mr Kiernan took them all on board and said that any progress or news would be notified to Association members as it was made. DEPRESSION The following is a true story (name changed). Do you identify with these thoughts? ‘The change in you that is brought about by depression is incredibly confusing’, says Roger 'there is no let up, no reprieve, just withdrawal, locking you into the way you feel by isolating you from people who care about you the most.’ Roger noticed changes in the way he felt in his second year of university. As a student, he was used to rising to the challenges of university, however, as his mood sank lower and lower, he began to react very differently to pressure: ‘I have always been hard working but somehow, academic challenges seemed overwhelming. My grades and attendance record remained strong, but I constantly felt I was falling behind and was totally preoccupied with thoughts of failure.’ The real you quickly becomes the old you and all of a sudden you feel deeply uncomfortable with yourself and doubt everything you do. Roger’s friends and family encouraged him to seek help, which started with a trip to the doctor.”I spent hours and hours alone and stopped socialising almost completely. Not knowing who to speak to I turned to the Samaritans. They helped me more than I thought they could. They listened, understood and supported

me through my time of need.’ Samaritans helped Roger when he felt depressed. Although the answer to managing depression is different for each person, he feels having a listening ear helped him understand the way he was feeling and prompted him to take action to improve his mood: A visit to the Doctor also became part of the recovery process. ‘I now have a strategy to cope when I am finding life difficult. I can spot the warning signs and take steps that I know will improve my mood. I don’t have a ‘silver bullet’ or ‘magic panacea’ but I can stop my mood sinking lower and lower.’ Reflecting back on his experience, Roger thinks that having someone to listen to him had a huge impact on his life: ‘I wouldn’t want anyone who was struggling to cope to end up feeling alone or isolated. Torrevieja Pipes and Drums lead the parade to the Cathedral

After they were greeted at the door of the Cathedral by the Chairman of the Orihuela Costa and District Branch of the RBL, a 45 minute service, held in English and Spanish, was conducted by the Chaplain of the Royal British Legion (Spain North), Pastor Keith Brown, along with the Cathedral Asst Dean, Fr. Emilio M Sánchez. Together with D Day veteran Joe (the cat man) Billet, the Chelsea Pensioners marched into the Cathedral accompanied by “Boys of the Old Brigade” played by the band of the Royal British Legion, Spain, following which, to the tune of “The Royal British Legion March,” they were followed by many of the Standards of the RBL Spain, RAFA, RNA, RMA, British and Spanish military veterans.

During the joint denomination service of readings and hymns, conducted in English and Spanish, there was further musical and choral accompaniment by the Royal British Legion Band in Spain, the wonderful Crescendo International Choir, led by Irene Oliva, opera singer Valerie Lynch, who performed a moving solo of Hallelujah and local entertainer and supporter Stevie Spit with his own musical arrangement, specially written for the service, all gaining rapturous applause. Also during the service the Last Post was played by Derek Hayes followed by Piper David Heaney who played the lament ‘Hector the Hero.’ Both Una Cleminson and Cllr Rocamora addressed the congregation during the service with the latter saying how delighted she was that the expatriate community were able to hold the service in the cathedral’s magnificent surrounds. She said how moved she had been during parts of a very emotional and extremely appropriate ceremony. In his sermon, District and Branch Chaplain Keith Brown singled out the Chelsea Pensioners along with Joe Billet, of whom he said “we all owe so much.” He added “This event is a great opportunity to recognise their bravery and their dedication and it is humbling to be among them today.” Following the service a reception was held by the Orihuela Council allowing the guests and attendees to mingle in the impressive cathedral cloisters, where RBL Chairman Una Cleminson told me, “"It was also good to see all the veterans from the many different organisations here in Spain, and their amazing standard bearers." I was delighted to see such a great show of support from them all, who turned in such vast numbers to show how much they value the service our veterans have provided.” The order of service, which was sponsored and produced by the Leader Newspaper, also thanked the efforts of former Councillor for Foreign Residents, Sofia Alvarez, and her assistant Fermin Gonzalez, who were instrumental in putting the event together, and in providing free coach transport to Orihuela and the reception after the event, along with photographer David Stokes, organiser Eddie Coleman and the members of the Orihuela Costa and District Branch.

Mention also to the choir, the singers and musicians who all made the event so memorable, the Crescendo International choir, Valerie Lynch, Stevie Spit and the RBL Concert Band Spain. It was just such a pity that we couldn’t listen to their wonderful performances for longer. Armed Forces Day held once again in the surrounds of the historic Catedral del Salvador y Santa Maria, truly was an especial occasion, which it is hoped will continue to grow in both size and reputation for many years to come. Only one match to report on this week and one left to play. The weather is getting hotter and I’m sure we are all looking forward to a welcome break. On Monday in the Southern League Hurricane Division the Hawks were away to Greenlands Gladiators and try as we did, we couldn’t quite pull it off. They stole our 2nd place in the table by 3 shots. We did, however, manage to win on two rinks and in another we only lost by 1 shot. Our winning rinks were: Janet Jukes, John Goddard and John Bailey 20 – 7, Ken Barber, Mick Kirby and Terry Hucknall 17 -15 The final result was close in shot difference, 76 shots for to 79 against giving us 4 points to 8 against. Well played our winning rinks. Our last match is away to San Luis who are only 6 points behind us so we really need to pull something out the bag to keep our 3rd position or per chance reclaim 2nd from Greenlands. It’s all to play for and we will have a better idea of what we have to do after Monday 1st July as we don’t play till the 8th. Come on Horadada, we can do this. Keep ‘em bowls a rollin’. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment. Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings. Quesada Bowls Club By Dee Stephenson A short report this week as we’re now into the last few matches of the Summer season with just the South Alicante summer league still playing. This week Quesada Blenheims lost their match against the league leaders San Luis Wellingtons. San Luis won 8-4 points and 105-82 shots. The Blenheims are still in 3rd place in the league just 7 points behind second place San Miguel Moors. However, both teams have a game in hand so there’s still a battle to be won for the top places. Unfortunately Quesada Lancasters suffered another defeat, this time against Emerald Isle Victors who won the match 10-2 and 96-68 shots. Quesada Bowls is a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. We Welcome both new and experienced bowlers. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we have our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors and we have free coaching for new members. So come along and see what we have to offer! Contact our membership secretary Angie Goddard newleaf2014@hotmail.co.uk

San Miguel Bowls Club Barry Jones On Monday San Miguel Christians were away to Vistabella Fairways winning 10 - 2 (91 shots to 74. The best winning triple were Tony Sansom, Linda Plaisted and Eddie Cowans, 18 - 11. San Miguel Moors had a bye.

San Luis Bowls Club

Congratulations to all our players who battled through the heat.

San Luis BC WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS.

Wellingtons 24th June, away v Quesada Blenheims, a good result 8-4, 105shots-82. Winners: Bob White, Ann Holland, Ray Pollock 25-16, Jan Pocock, June & Keith Jones 26-13, Brian Pocock, Neil Morrison, Ian Kenyon 26-12.

Anyone who has played against San Luis BC, will know that we are a very friendly club; members know that we are supportive of each other. We are competitive at all league levels, with a strong Winter League presence but still enjoy our bowling and there are also opportunities for “social” bowling.

Hercules home v Emerald Isle Vulcans, a tough day at the office; 2-10, 77shots-99. Winners: Mags Haines, Bill Webb, Derrick Cooper 17-16. 26th June VCLeague WINNERS; North v South Play-off at Monte Mar, SL Falcons v Benitachell. This was obviously going to be a close fought match and so it turned out. With 5 disciplines it just needed 3 wins to take the trophy. Our singles players got off to a good start against strong opponents; Ian Kenyon (v Greg Sperring), drew steadily to build a lead, going on to win 21-16. Ann Holland had a close match (v Mary Cockell); at 19-19 the pressure was on but Ann came through to win 21-19. Unfortunately our trips & rinks were outplayed, leaving just the pairs. Pam Lockett and Scott Malden had a real nip & tuck match, from a slow start, pulling back & fighting so hard right to the end, just losing by 2 shots.

Next season we will have 2 squads in both Division A and Division C on both days. This will give plenty of games for everyone and opportunities for players of all levels of experience. We have an established open and fair selection policy for all divisions. Teams have to be entered in the leagues by the end of August. If you commit to playing for us by joining on 1st August you will have 13 months membership to 31.8.20. We also have 7 months membership available from 1.10.19-30.4.20. Come along & bowl for free on any Sunday morning at 10:00am to try the game….ask at the bar. For further information please contact our Club Captain June Jones – 691 903 773 or Vice-Captain Ian Kenyon – 662 282 103. We look forward to hearing from you.

companionship, I know our rink really enjoyed the occasion.

On Monday morning the Buckskins played their Harrier Division fixture at home against Greenland Glosters, with summer weather well and truly set in.

Gary Dunstone, Ann Taylor and Jim Taylor 16-22. Ngaio Baldwin, Pete Baldwin and Malc Sykes 1516. Dolly Ford, Peter Blackburn and Ron Greenstreet 17-21. Brian Gilham, Marion Haynes and Dave Haynes 15-21. Debbie Ham, Adrian Ham and Keith Longshaw 29-8.

The match was close on all round play, though the Buckskins took just the one rink and the overall shots. But all four losses were close in score and play and certainly all seem to enjoy the bowls and

EASTER SEASON 2019 WINNER ANNOUNCED The SAMM Easter race season was completed on May 26th and totalled 11 races, a number having been lost through bad weather. It was an extremely close fought season with some great sailing from everybody who took part and the final scores reflected this. Using the “Low Score” system gave results of first 42.25 points, with second and third tied on 42.5 points. However, as is normal, the three worse scores of each boat were dropped to give final scores and placing’s of first Mistral with 11.5 points, second Topaz with 22.25 points and third Cuatro with 23.5 points.

The Topaz is owned by Julian Singleton but Mistral is a Balaton Group boat and Cuatro a Shoestring Group boat so are sailed by different people most race days. The results were announced and the trophies presented at SAMM meeting on June 12th. Rob Peck collected the winner’s trophy on behalf of the various Mistral crews and Jack Moss did the same for the Cuatro crews The Late Spring Season is now underway and continues every Sunday until July 14th. Carp R Us The Rio Segura near Bigastro was the venue for Round Seven of the Carp-R-Us Summer Series. The river here is quite deep and fast flowing and, on its day, produces some fairly good fish. Unfortunately, this was not one of those days as only two anglers caught. First was Alan Priest with 4.50kg caught on feeder and maggot and second was Roy Buttress with 0.80kg caught on feeder and pellet. It was good to see large numbers of fry in the margins, lets hope they continue to grow. The Old Course, Lahinch, C. Clare.

THE DUBAI DUTY FREE IRISH OPEN takes place at Lahinch from 4-7th July. Host Paul McGinley, who used to caddy for his father there says: “Everybody falls in love with the place. It’s the sense of real rural Ireland that people are attracted to. The course is close to the village and the idea is to create a festival atmosphere, with live music, people having a few drinks in the streets, a bit of craic, it will be amazing.” They can also watch Europe’s top golfers playing hide and seek among the dunes. On Lahinch’s Old Course two holes especially stand out, the par-5 Klondyke and par-3 Dell, originally designed by Old Tom Morris. The 475-yd. Klondyke requires a blind second shot, a flag man stands atop the dune, signalling to groups behind when it's safe to hit. The 154-yd. Dell has a sunken green surrounded by dunes and a strategically placed rock provides the only hint to finding the flag. The little town of Port Stewart, C. Antrim (pop 7000) will welcome 190,000 fans on 18th July as the 148th Open commences on the Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush. A Park and Ride will be laid on and a new train station has been constructed. There is a local bus to Gold Division winners the course but as the route passes the Old Bushmills Whiskey Distillery it is possible some may not make it to the Open. Graeme McDowell, whose U.S. Open victory at Pebble Beach in 2010 kickstarted the movement to bring the Open back to N. Ireland,

and who was born in Portrush, heaved a huge sigh of relief when he qualified last month. “Sure I’m not that bothered either way,” he said beforehand, trying to hide his lengthening nose. RORY, TIGER and pals may be flying over in their Lear Jets but there was no five star treatment for Open contenders in the old days. Peter Alliss recalls: “For club professionals tournaments were almost an aside. They played on Friday because they had to get back to their pro shop on the Saturday. We all travelled together, and shared rooms. No en-suite for us, you trotted down the corridor to the bathroom with a piece of soap in a tin. We’d play two rounds on the Friday, and drive right through the night. We had to phone the AA beforehand, to find out if any petrol stations were open!” JEONGEUN Lee6 (so called because she is the sixth player called Lee on the LPGA Tour) won the Womens US Open in Charleston with a final round six-under 70. Jeongeun said afterwards: “Some of the KLPGA players are very severely competitive, so I don’t really enjoy playing with them much.” Poor Lee6, It must be nerveracking, having Lees No’s 1-5 breathing down her neck. When Tiger Woods former coach Hank Haney said on TV that if asked to name the winner of the LPGA US Open: “I’d go with Lee, if I didn’t have to give a first name at least I’d get a bunch of them right” it caused an outraged Twitterstorm! sailed through to claim the Gold medal.

Meet Vedam Hariharan Vedam Hariharan, one of the world's leading international cricket coaches, speaks exclusively to Andrew Atkinson in Part 1 of a 2 part interview. VEDAM Hariharan who was at La Manga resort in April with the Glasgow Academy CC in a cricket tournament, played for India in the schools tests against England, Combined Indian Universities against Sri Lanka, and India Under 22. Vedam, nicknamed 'Hari', also played Ranji Trophy cricket (First Class) for the states of Karnataka and Kerala between 1974 and 1990.

Hari, the professional at Glasgow Academy, is an International cricket coach with over 27 years experience, and one of the most experienced and qualified coaches from grass root to First Class level.

Jamie Long, aged 10, stepped into the Final with confidence and with his excellent technique - through intelligent instructions squad, which is where you want them to be."

England u17 and Stoke City u18 goalkeeper Nathan Broome had a net gain - when making his England u17 debut against Hungary at the Pinatar Arena, Murcia, in February. Broome, who returned to Spain in June, when visiting his grandparents on the Costa Blanca, spent time fishing at El Paraiso fishing lake in Guardamar, Alicante (pictured in The Leader). Manchester City prodigy Broome, who moved to Stoke on a free transfer in 2018, was included in England u17s manager Steve Cooper's training squad for the u17s European Championships in May. "It was the first opportunity for our players to be involved in a major tournament, one that has proved to be a vital milestone for players and their development for the future," said Cooper. Broome made his Stoke u23 debut against Newcastle United u23 in April, and u23 manager Kevin Russell said: "Nathan is very young and is getting a good learning experience. "Some of the young players are up and around the first team

PHIL MICKELSON has decided to broadcast his golfing memories on Youtube: anyone interested can curl up with their cocoa to watch his videos entitled “Phireside with Phil.” What next? “Bedtime with Bubba?”

"During this period I also played professional cricket in the UK in the Central Yorkshire league, Bradford league, North Lancashire league, Northern Cricket Union in Ireland and, in 1992, arrived in Scotland to play and coach," Hari told me.

Two of Quesada Fitness Gym's Junior kick boxers fared exceptionally well at the Valencian Championships at Quart de Poblet on June 22, in the light kick category. Curtis Yeates, aged 13, received an accidental kick to the throat from his opponent - leaving him breathless - and, despite bravely wishing to continue, Head Coach, Santiago Lopez retired him, leaving Curtis with the Silver medal, in second place.

Net gain in Spain for England u17 keeper Broome

KEVIN NA WON his third PGA Tour title by four shots at the Charles Schwab Challenge, beginning the final round with a two shot lead and remaining alone at the top of the Sunday leaderboard at Colonial CC. His final hole birdie gave him a four-under 66 and 13-under-par. As Na is known to be one of the slowest players on Tour, it’s possible the other competitors had simply gone to sleep.

Former England u18 Russell, 52, who made 456 career appearances, for Brighton, Leicester, Stoke, Burnley and Bournemouth, said: "Young players need to keep their feet on the floor. "The focus is to work hard - learning the game - with patience. And hopefully they'll get their rewards." First year Scholar Broome, who made his u18 Stoke debut in August, following his release by Manchester City in February 2018, played in The Potters u23 Premier League 2 in the 2018-19 season. Broome has also featured for Stoke City in the Amtzeller Pfingstturnier tournament in Germany.

"I successfully coached in India, the states of Karnataka and Kerala, Ireland, Malaysia (Pahang state and, last winter in Johor state), England, Australia and Scotland," said Hari. "Being self-driven, highly motivated I always try to push boundaries," said Hari, who has a good track record of successfully designing and implementing projects, some of which are unique. "As a people person, I am a team player and have enjoyed working, socialising, learning and understanding different cultures around the world," said Hari. "This has helped me to understand and relate well with the players I coach. "I not only help develop better abled cricketers, but also help raise the participation level of those that are differently abled, by providing them the joys of cricket," said Hari. Hari's playing and coaching experience, coupled with Academic backing, has helped him considerably in understanding how to bridge academics and the coaching environment. Hari, a long-standing Cricket Professional at The Glasgow Academy in the UK, is also the Head Coach at The Glasgow Accies Cricket club. "I have assisted Scottish cricket in their development projects in the west districts," said Hari. *In Part 2 ECB level III coach Hari talks about his coaching roles in Australia, the Karnataka state CA, his coaching Master's Degree, and sports psychology. Mike Probert Talks Golf We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. The deals shown in the table are some of the best available to you until 31 August. Around and About the Courses – Font Del Llop The beautiful golf course that is Font del Llop is a rolling links like golf course played in a valley overlooking the town of ASPE. This golf course is a challenge for all standards of golfer ,especially the first 6 holes which tend to squeeze the golfer a little but then opens up on the back nine. The golf course is relatively new but already the are making plans to improve the course and this work has now started with changes to the par 5 9th hole. The green on this hole is large but undulating which creates a limited number of pin positions and they have decided to lower the green by 6 to 8 feet, flatten the putting surface and raise the green side bunker so it as not so deep and alter the water course of the stream to the left of the green. This work will cost in the region of €100k and the work will take 6 months so to allow for this they have created a good quality provisional green. None of this work should detract from this beautiful and challenging golf course and why not play it now as low season prices are still available until 24/08/19.

Three times Aintree Grand National winning owner Trevor Hemmings has handed the chairmanship reins to his son Craig at Championship club Preston North End. "We have a young and exciting group of players - led by Alex Neil," said Craig Hemmings, eyeing the Premier League. Octogenarian Hemmings snr, 84, worth £850m, as down to earth one can be, wouldn't mind me saying he'd be happier eating fish and chips, on either Benidorm or Blackpool Prom, than eating canapés and drinking champagne. Flat cap wearing, working class grafter Hemmings began a career in bricklaying upon leaving school, going on to build business empires, employing thousands. His racing empire once stood at over 100 horses in training, something that paid off when completing a trio of successes in the world's most famous race in the Grand National. Craig Hemmings, 57, who previously attended Deepdale management meetings on behalf of his father, is seen by Hemmings snr as a winning bet to lead Preston in the higher echelons of world football. "I am delighted to take up the position of chairman at this proud and historic club," said Hemmings jnr, one of three sons. Hemmings snr, involved with Preston for over four decades, took overall charge at Deepdale in recent years. "My family’s connections with Preston North End have been in place for almost five decades," said Craig Hemmings. "My own involvement dates back to the early 1970s - when I first watched Preston North End play," said Craig Hemmings. On his appointment at The Lilywhites, the first club to win the League and FA Cup double in 1888, Craig Hemmings said: "It is a pleasure and a privilege - to continue that involvement." On sitting in at boardroom meetings, Craig Hemmings said: "I have been able to get an understanding of the workings of the club." Manager Alex Neil, 38, who arrived at Preston in 2017, took The Lilywhites to within touching distance of the play offs last season, before petering away towards the end of the campaign. Neil, who won promotion to the Scottish Premier League as a player at Hamilton in 2008, led Hamilton to the SPL as manager in 2014, prior to departing in a move to Norwich City in 2015, going on to take The Canaries to the Premier League. Breeder Hemmings snr, who won the Aintree Grand National with Hedgehunter (2005), Ballabriggs (2011) and Many Clouds in 2015, sees Neil as the man to get Preston past the winning post, and into the Premier League. "In recent seasons we have had a very hard working and dedicated group of staff," said Craig Hemmings.

SCOTT Fitzgerald has pulled out of a super welterweight fight against Brian Rose in July - after sustaining injury while sparring in Spain. “After injuring my hand sparring in Tenerife, and giving it time to rest, I’m still unable to hit anything with it," rued Preston born Fitzgerald, Resort, and at Benidorm's 4-star Marina Hotel. Gascoigne, who spent time jet skiing and mixed with fans in Benidorm, posing for 'selfies' while speaking with punters, relaxed by a private pool during his brief stay, looking fit and healthy in the blistering 30 degrees temperature. Gascoigne, who jokingly spent time fishing - in the swimming pool - was jet skiing at Cabo Roig. "I love sun, sea & jet Ski. YIPPEE!," said Gascoigne, who had been looking forward to being in Spain - on 'my hollies'.

Fitzgerald, who caused a major upset in defeating Anthony Fowler in March, to win the super welterweight belt, is eyeing a return to the ring in September, against British Lonsdale title belt holder Ted Cheeseman. "I want to get the problem sorted then I can be 100% for the British title," said Fitzgerald, who is also suffering a shoulder problem and needs surgery on a finger injury.

Tributes flow in to ex CD Montesinos President Joaquin By Andrew Atkinson TRIBUTES have poured in following the passing of CD Montesinos football club former President and lifelong supporter Joaquin Lorente Garcia. Nicknamed Jaime, and affectionately known as 'Pepe' as owner of Casa Pepe in Los Montesinos, Alicante, Joaquin died on 19 June. The funeral service of Joaquin, father of CD Montesinos midfielder Maccan, took place at the town square Church two days later. Speaking to me, Maccan said: "My father was a great person who has helped with everything he had." CD Montesinos supporters club President Eddie Cagagio arranged flowers for the funeral, on behalf of the Full Monte club. "It is a very sad time and our condolences go out to the family ," Eddie told me. Joaquin was the long term President of CD Montesinos and it was he who kept the club running." "He was very passionate about CD Montesinos, attending all games. He was always upbeat - even during the times when things were not going too well. His passing is certainly the end of an era at CD Montesinos," said Eddie adding that he will always have fond personal memories: "I used to see him regularly during the week in town. His favourite 'tipple' was a brandy glass with one ice - filled with Orujo a drink that, for a few of us, will always be known as a 'Jaime'," said Eddie. CD Montesinos fans, some who donned the club's colours at the funeral, also paid their respects: "Condolences go to Maccan and the family. We will miss him at games," said David Winder. "Jaime was a lovely guy and he will be missed by all who knew him," said club Treasurer Howard Yeats. "Rest In Peace", Jaime. You were a good man, someone who really loved football," said Javi Fernandez.
