Blue Ribbon titles both fall to newcomers Without any major sponsors I think it would be fair to say that there were some doubts going into the Valencian Community Bowls Championship which ended last week with the semi finals and

finals at San Miguel Bowls Club. But all credit to the organising committee chaired by FEB Delegate Bob Donnelly, we have just seen one of the best run bowls tournaments held on the Costa Blanca in recent years. Continued on Page 2

Winners of the Ladies and Gents Singles, Men’s and Ladies Pairs and Mixed Rinks Bowling on home turf, Drew Gerrard dislodged singles favourite Pete Bonsor, a current Spanish International in a dramatic semi final which he won by a single shot, 21-20, on the very last end. Ian Kenyon of Vistabella, meanwhile, overturned on of the country’s most consistent bowlers, Keith Jones, in an equally exciting match. The pair then went on to thrill the crowd on Saturday afternoon in a final in which neither player held more than a 2 shot advantage, and that Drew eventually edged, after 26 ends, when he finally pulled away to win by 21-17. The Ladies Final was an all Monte Mar affair between good friends Sue Kemp and Pauline Woodfine. Unfortunately, Pauline was unable to claw her way back into the game after Sue had established an early lead, which she built on throughout the match. Final score 21-4. Sabrina Marks and June Jones of La Siesta were always on top in their Ladies Pairs final against Lyn Miller and Chris Parsons despite the latter twosome having home advantage. But the San Miguel players did achieve the loudest cheer of the week when they won their first point, trailing at that stage by 20-0 on the 8th end. Sabrina and June ran out comfortable winners by 29-4. The Men’s Pairs was held on the previous day bringMixed Pairs winners

Photo Lynne Bishop of Vistabella Carl Eagle always promised to be of the highest quality encounters of the tournament, and so it proved to be, with some excellent trail shots and pinpoint accuracy by both sides where 6 or 8 woods were within a foot of the jack, and it looked as if there was no possible way to draw another winner. However, it was the San Luis trio who managed to win the battle, despite being behind 7-5 after 6 ends they picked up a 6 on the next end, from which they never looked back, as they continued to widen the gap, with Vistabella conceding after the 16th end when they were losing 11-24. This result in no way reflected the closeness in quality between the two teams. The Mixed Fours Competition saw Jacqui Johnston, Barry Armstrong, Colin and Mel Highland of Quesada facing current holder, Vistabella’s Eric and Lynne Bishop, Charlie Watkins and Ken Cuthbert and this proved to be another nail biting affair. The VB foursome held a narrow advantage through to the 15th end but a late surge from the eventual winners, the team from Quesada, edged them into the lead when it mattered most. Final score 12-9 after the 18 ends. Presentations and the closing ceremony took place in brilliant sunshine on Saturday afternoon after yet another first class event in which the Valencian Delegate thanked the owners, proprietors and marshals at the Emerald Isle, La Siesta and San Miguel Bowls Clubs for their outstanding support. He ended his closing dialogue by then picking out the organising committee of Fred Trigwell, June Jones and Pam Lockett for their sterling efforts in ensuring the continued success of bowls in the community and in particular the 2015 Competition. Going into the final end Bonsor and Pain held a 3 shot advantage only for the VB pair to pick up 4 and take the title 19-18. In the Mixed Pairs we had husband and wife pairing of Lynne and Eric Bishop of VIstabella in another final, this time against Ann Allen and Stuart Denholm of San Miguel. The advantage changed a couple of times with San Miguel 17-15 after 14 ends, but with 3 and 4 to Vistabella on the next two ends they took the lead at a crucial stage. San Miguel picked up 3 on the 17th end, but on the last end Lynne drew an early shot, and despite San Miguel’s best efforts it remained there, to give a 23-20 win to Vistabella. The wall that nobody wants

Tuesday, 13th October, 2015

By Anne Faulkner

Concerns about the wall were brought to the attention of the Town Hall as long ago as 2008.

Recent publicity about a large Wall in the Park in Los Dolses (Article: PSOE Denounce Los Dolses Wall as unsafe) has brought into the public eye an issue which has been around almost since the Wall was built. This wall, constructed during 2000/2001, built of large uneven blocks of stone, varying in height from 3 metres to 8 metres, towers above the trees in the park and is best viewed from the park. Concerns about the wall began to surface and were brought to the attention of the Town Hall as long ago as 2008. A comprehensive survey was carried out at the instigation of the Community of Owners situated above the wall in 2011, having been surprised to be told by the Town Hall, in 2010 and again in 2013, that the 'Wall in the Park' was of a private nature and that they should go to the builder to claim any damage. As the garden walls were understood to be the boundary of the community and the land outside these walls did not comprise part of the Community, the residents where surprised to find that a wall considered by all to be an integral part of the park was being placed very firmly in their

ownership. Locals all refer to this wall as the Wall in the Park, it being very firmly seen from the park, a park approached from C/Algorrobo and a park which is maintained by the Town Hall. The recent publicity has caused concern to owners of the Community who regard it as negative and unwanted, inherantly suggesting that houses above this wall could all be in a precarious situation. Residents are concerned that the bad publicity will give people the impression that all the houses as seen above the wall are in a dangerous position. Users of the park are concerned for the safety of park users. This is a situation which appears to have reached stalemate, the issue being passed around, while it is the PSOE who have claimed responsilitity for the recent denouncement it has been pointed out that this is the third goverment group running the Town Hall to be involved in this issue. Perhaps it will be third time lucky for the residents who live above the wall, and have never claimed to own the Wall, and the users of the park, dogwalkers and children, who walk and play under the Wall in the Park!

Farmers hoping for rain as Costa weathermen forecast more sunshine Crops are struggling to reach maturity because of the lack of rain

While farmers hope for rain, the continuing warm weather is a boost for the local bar and restaurant trade More sun and more rain, that’s the predictions from the weather centre for the next couple of months with not much rain but plenty of sunshine and temperatures remaining around the thirty degree mark well into November. What most businesses have reported as being a good summer looks set to continue with the Brits especially making the most of, reasonably, cheap airfares and a strong pound meaning they have more money to spend on the Costas! Further inland more rain is expected for the weeks approaching Christmas as is the norm for that region but experts have said that they expect, what has already been a long hot summer, to carry on at least until mid to late November. Farmers in the region are hoping the rains come sooner rather than later with crops struggling to reach maturity with the amount of dry days

that the coast has experienced this summer. The hottest July on record didn’t help and with just a few odd hours of rain along the coast farmers are hoping for a good and wet autumn. While farmers may not be happy the businesses of the region are with an increase in footfall and expenditure by visitors reported by all types of business up and down the coast. Traders are expecting that to continue as the weather stays warm and are hoping for a longer season this year which will help through the quitter winter months. Alicante City has reported record visitors this year as has the airport itself with its busiest July ever and hotels all along the Costa Blanca have reported a much better year and many for people from the UK who are flooding back on the back of the weak Euro. Not only has the struggling Euro seen more Brits heading back to Spain but troubles in

Tunisia, Egypt and the knock on effect into places like Turkey have seen many opting for a holiday on the Costa Blanca which has been noticeable not only on the beaches but with busier roads and commercial centres this year. So we need the rain for the farmers and the sun for the visitors…maybe if it could rain just a little, every night, but not for long?

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Viaduct Power Ten years ago, an imaginative project began on the small Canary Island of El Hierro, which many thought would be impossible. It was an experiment that has the potential to be of enormous significance upon the global battle against climate change, and the abandonment of fossil fuels as a source of energy. This project has culminated in El Hierro now being totally self sufficient in energy by using the island’s vast resources of wind and hydropower, involving a wind farm, hydroelectric plant, an efficient pumping system and two reservoirs. One year ago, and before the big switchover, the island’s 10,000 residents had to rely upon regular, and sometimes unreliable, shipments of oil from its larger neighbours. Now, on a typical windy day, more power is generated than required by its residents, and the excess power pumps water from one reservoir to another at a higher elevation of 700 metres. When the wind dies, the water is released to spin turbines to generate electricity. Planning and implementation has been a long and expensive process, costing around 82 million euros, but as the regional government and the island’s inhabitants have been spending millions of euros each year on diesel, the long-term saving will be considerable. It is a project that has received attention from scientists and government specialists from many counties in a bid to resolve energy and pollution issues in their own countries. Ten years on, I am still wondering why, on the neighbouring islands to El Hierro, we still have huge oil tankers feeding the power stations? Why have we not moved towards the El Hierro solution? As I live only a few kilometres from an electricity generating station in Gran

Canaria, I am used to seeing tankers thundering down the small roads several times each day. The costs are enormous; roads are damaged, as well as the sheer inconvenience in shipping oil to the islands from the Spanish Peninsular to be fed into the power stations upon which we all rely.

The island of El Hierro is now totally self sufficient in energy

Despite the success of solar energy, wind and wave power in many parts of the world, I rarely see solar panels on the roofs of businesses and government buildings, let alone residential homes on the island. We enjoy very high levels of sunshine throughout the year, and we have plenty of wind and wave energy surrounding the islands, but these natural resources are wasted. Instead, the oil companies prefer to scour the seas off these beautiful islands for deposits of oil and gas with scant regard to the damage that inevitably occurs to marine life. Fortunately, the price of oil has fallen to make this no longer economically viable, but only for the time being. We do have some wind turbines onshore, which I am rather fond of. After all, I would much rather live next to a wind farm than a nuclear power station or an oil refinery. Remembering the huge anger generated about on-shore wind farms in the UK, I read with interest a study by a team of Spanish and British researchers concerned with using spare space on skyscrapers, motorways and bridges to mount relatively unobtrusive wind turbines. Several test sites were considered, including the Juncal Viaduct in Gran Canaria. Using computer simulations, the researchers discovered that installing just two medium sized turbines between the bridge’s existing pillars would produce power equivalent to 24 small wind tur-

bines, which would be sufficient to meet the average power consumption of 450 to 500 homes on the island. The architect design of this ‘revised’ viaduct is not only impressive, but rather beautiful. Sadly, there are no immediate plans to put these imaginative ideas into practice, but the research into the Juncal Viaduct has shown that, technically, it is possible. All we need now is political will, investment and a willingness to move away from oil, if the powerful oil companies and governments will allow it. The island of El Hierro has already proven that even the wildest dreams are possible, when having the will and determination to succeed. Local agricultural show Pulls in crowds

San Fulgencio saw over 400 people attend the first skills test for tractor drivers at the weekend. There were approximately a dozen drivers who were set a variety of driving tests at the wheel of a tractor with one, sometimes two hitched trailers. They had to drive forwards, in reverse and around a variety of obstacles, in the form of an "S" and "L" and for every fault that they incurred, an extra five seconds was added to their time. Most of the drivers were from the local farmers union and they thoroughly entertained a far greater number of spectators than were perhaps expected. The contest was also attended by Manuel Gomez, the councillor for Agriculture, who told the crowd that the idea for the competition was hatched over breakfast by a gathering of farmers. “To say that it has been a success would be a great understatement as there were many more people on the sidelines than we expected.” He continued “It looks very much as though it has the makings of becoming a massive event bringing together many more farmers from all over the Vega Baja so to say that there will be a second edition of the contest is beyond question” he said. The show, which lasted for over four hours, also featured exhibitions of the latest technology in agricultural machinery. There were also several

parallel activities to the test, with lots of side stalls ranging from clothing and merchandising, to hams, sausages and other fresh foods.

Drug and alcohol abuse program supported by San Fulgencio secondary students

S

an Fulgencio Council has recently completed a "programme for the prevention of drug addiction" in collaboration with the University Miguel Hernandez in Alicante and the Deputation of Alicante which has also provided a lot of the funding. The initiative was introduced through the town’s department of social services. It was a week long programme developed and delivered by University staff that are based in the Uni’s department of psychology of health.

This programme was developed in the institute of secondary education in San Fulgencio in teaching time, in groups of threes and fours students, 14 and 15 years old. In all there were a total of 6 Workshops in each of which there was a total of three groups. Lecturers from the university developed the programme which also

includes a protocol for the prevention of the abuse of alcohol and other addictive behaviour in schools, with the aim of preventing or delaying the use and abuse of the different drugs, all this with special emphasis on the abuse of drugs in the context of leisure. The cost of the course was 994,02 euros, entirely funded by the Deputation of Alicante, thanks to the grant application made by the council within the convening of "grants to municipalities of the province for activities in the area of prevention of drug addiction"

La Marina Beaches, safety first…or not? Officials from San Fulgencio Town Hall are warning locals and holiday makers that they still need to be vigilant when in or near water after figures for the summer covering the region as a whole showed that there were 69 incidents involving drowning of which sixteen were fatal, two of those being children. Not only are the incidents related to swimming pools or beaches but also the Valencian region’s rivers, lakes and ponds. The reminder to take care in the water comes at an appropriate time with warm weather attracting more and more visitors to beaches or generally using swimming pools whether private or public. Advice such as to make sure a life guard is on duty and for parents not to let young children out of their sight when around water clearly need to be repeated following the figures for incidents involving water in the region. Drinking and eating before bathing is also another problem for some swimmers and health authorities are asking people to take care of themselves before entering the water and to abide by the beach flag warning system along the coast. The elderly are also warned to care extra care especially in the extreme temperatures that we are experiencing and to make sure to seek shade whenever possible. Too much heat and exercise have seen a good number of heart attacks among the elderly this year. One problem highlighted by locals was the fact

that the council (LA Marina beach belongs to Elche) have taken away the toilets, tourist information and life guards and as one local stated, ‘the. The beach was packed the other day with people constantly asking where the toilets are.’ This seems to contradict the warnings sent out

from Valencia where it should surely not necessarily be that the summer ends and the end of September and nobody goes to the beach after that? It seems an oddity that in a country with a climate such as it is and when beaches are often used year

round why all of a sudden it is ok to withdraw the lifeguards and facilities and then tell people that is exactly what they need. The debate will continue for sure and I’ll keep a keen eye on how the town hall in Elche (and other coastal towns) reacts to the question.

Fundraising for AECC Torrevieja The group of ladies calling themselves "The Weigh-In Club" recently held another series of events in aid of AECC Torrevieja and again surpassed their previous best figures. Based at Casa Mia in El Chaparral the ladies raised the sum of €1679, mainly by selling home-made cakes and holding a a very profitable raffle, as in previous years. Casa Mia hosted the main event but many other local businesses also provided help by donating prizes. AECC Hospital volunteer Ann Bissett was there to collect the money from Caroline Richardson, and was pleasantly surprised to be told that in addition to the money raised by the Weigh-In Club a lady named Jackie McGee had raised an additional €470 by organising a coffee afternoon at the Bamboo Lounge in Entre Naranjos. Jackie's amount made an outstanding sum of €2149 to be given to AECC for its battle against cancer and its help for those suffering from it. Ann thanked all the ladies and donators for their generosity and hard work, but also reminded the ladies of the need for regular breast cancer and cervical smear checks, which AECC can always provide. Ann also asked the ladies if they could remind the men in their lives to have their checks done too.

A Cappella popularity ensures success for Second Harmony College Since the group Collabro won Britain’s Got Talent in 2014, there has been massive interest in A Cappella (singing without accompaniment, or Barbershop) as people recognise that they don’t need to play an instrument to be a successful musician.

The ladies chorus

This was very obvious at the ‘Harmony College’, held at the Hotel Costa Narejos in Los Alcázares this past weekend, as it was attended by experienced enthusiasts and newcomers from all over Spain and the UK. Organised for the second time by SABS (Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers), the event was supported by Reckless quartet from the UK who have represented the BABS (British Association of Barbershop Singers) on the international stage in the USA twice and will be representing them again in Nashville in 2016. Reckless hold ten gold medals between them! Guests gathered to enjoy a lively course run by this very experienced barbershop quartet who taught a variety of techniques to the Harmony College students to improve both their singing and performance skills. This included three ‘Harmony College Choruses’: the Ladies Chorus, the Men’s Chorus and the Mixed Chorus.

But it wasn’t all hard work! There was a lot of fun, chat and bonding too, and the event culminated in a free public concert which we are happy to say was full to capacity. This was an opportunity to show off what the ‘students’ had learned during the weekend and was appreciated

by everyone. Reckless gave a stunning quartet performance to round off the very successful weekend.

UK’s Private buyers flock to Vauxhall for September deals

Vauxhall sold more cars and vans to private buyers in the crucial plate-change month of September than any other manufacturer, according to figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The Luton-based manufacturer sold 43,848 cars last month, an impressive 6.49 per cent increase on September 2014. It’s the first time Vauxhall has been number one for private buyers in a plate-change month since electronic records began in 1996. Mokka and Zafira Tourer were also number one in retail in their respective segments. Further highlights included the Corsa supermini, Vauxhall’s best-selling model, achieving sales of 15,670, a 25.3 per cent increase on September last year. The Insignia also had a bumper month, leading total sales in its segment. Vauxhall Commercial Vehicles also made strong gains in the CV market showing improved sales across its entire van range from January to September this year, making it the number one manufacturer for retail customers. The van market itself enjoyed strong growth in September with 58,744 light commercial vehicles registered, up 19.5 per cent versus the same month last year. Vauxhall sold 31,038 LCVs in the nine months to September corresponding to a 10.9 per cent market share and a 37.9 per cent increase on the same period last year. That was more than double the rate of increase in the market as a whole, which was up 17.4 per cent with 284,161 units registered. Vauxhall claimed top spot in the retail van charts with 11,425 registrations and an impressive 17.1 per cent market share. The popular Vivaro, built at Vauxhall’s Luton plant, was the stand-out performer, accounting for an 11.01 per cent share of the retail van market. Overall, 20,231 Vivaro units have been sold year-to-date (compared to 13,411 for the same period last year), an increase of 50.8 per cent. This means there have been more Vivaros sold in the first nine months of 2015 than there were in the whole of 2014. “September was a great month for Vauxhall with sales results that we can be truly proud of,” said Rory Harvey, Vauxhall’s Chairman and Managing Director. “Now we focus on finishing the year strongly with New Astra arriving in showrooms this month and OnStar giving us a tremendous lead in the vehicle connectivity arena.”

New Hope Against Secondary Breast Cancer The charity Against Breast Cancer are funding a 4-year project at Oxford University to make new breast cancer treatments that stick to cancerous breast cells that have spread throughout the body; a currently incurable condition termed metastases, or secondary spread. Dr. Weston Struwe of the Glycoprotein Therapeutics Laboratory will make and test novel antibodies for secondary spread that avoid damaging healthy cells whilst targeting the cancerous ones, no matter where they are in the body or how small the tumour. Dr. Struwe explains “We hope to show that specific targeting of metastatic cells can be achieved by engineering antibodies to bind 2 different targets on a cancerous cell instead of only one, and demonstrate that these newly designed antibodies can be stably produced". The new antibodies will ‘see’ 2 different molecules, both present only on the surface of cancerous cells which scientists hope will increase the likelihood of them sticking to the surface of secondary breast cancer cells, even if the target molecules are present at a low concentration on the cell surface. This will also reduce toxicity of the treatment as healthy cells that may display one of the target molecules, are ignored. As a treatment for secondary breast cancer, these antibodies may prevent growth or survival signals being received by the breast cancer cells, or mark them for destruction by the immune system. Current antibody treatments, such as the HER2-binding antibody Herceptin, stick to cancerous cells that have lots of the target molecule present on the cell surface but miss cancerous cells that display fewer molecules. Antibody treatments may also stick to healthy cells with normal levels of the target molecule, such as heart cells that display HER2 which is involved in normal cell growth for repair of heart tissue and requires heart monitoring during Herceptin treatment. Dr. Nicola Winstone, Research Manager at Against Breast Cancer says “If this project proves successful these antibodies will be assessed in future clinical trials and could provide a potent new treatment method for secondary breast cancer that may be applicable to other metastatic cancer types too”. One in five breast cancer cases result in fatal metastases, when breast cancer cells break away from the original tumour site and establish new tumours in bone, lung, liver or brain. Because they look a lot like healthy cells, cancerous cells are not recognized as dangerous by your body, and antibodies made naturally by your immune system do not stick to them. For more information about the charity and how to get involved by volunteering or fundraising, please see the website at Against Breast Cancer Against Breast Cancer Against Breast Cancer is a charity dedicated to funding ground-breaking research to increase survival after a breast cancer diagnosis by focusing on secondary spread, the cause of all breast-cancer related deaths. We fund research that addresses critical gaps in scientific resources and knowledge to help doctors diagnose and treat secondary breast cancer faster and more effectively, and to understand factors that may increase or reduce the risk of secondary spread so that people can make informed diet and lifestyle choices. We have directly funded the collection of, and continue to fund the storage of over 23,000 blood and urine samples, provided annually by over 3,300 women with breast cancer from 56 hospitals across the UK in our Diet & Lifestyle Study, the largest national study of its kind. Researchers can determine differences between women who develop secondary breast cancer and those who do not by studying this collection of biological samples and dietary and lifestyle information provided at the same time.

The town of Baños de Encina with the olive groves in the foreground

Behind Granada you can see the highest mountain range in Spain. The Sierra Nevada. Usually displaying snow covered peaks despite the warm temperatures of southern Spain. Arriving at Baños, late afternoon you are soon settled in a good sized family hotel which offers a panoramic view of the town and its surroundings. The town sits in the shadow of a spectacular Moorish castle which dates back to the tenth century. A windmill and old churches with ancient bells ringing in their towers add to the charm of the surrounding olive groves, which in turn sit beside a large reservoir. For much of the year storks swoop across the blue skies and build nests in the church towers.

Wa l k i n g t h ro u g h t h e shadows of history The juderia is a charming entirely white district of Cordoba, filled with patios and flowers

Narrow cobbled streets lead us between whitewashed houses, which host the famous Cordoban flower filled patios. Numerous museums are to be found in almost every street. The old town centres round one of the most famous buildings in the world. The Mezquita. A curious combination of a magnificent Muslim mosque and e highly decora-

Straddling the river, joining the old town to a newer part of the city is an even earlier relic of ancient Spain. A Roman bridge. Cordoba was used by the Romans as a port. There boats being rowed by an army of slaves to bring men and materials from the ocean and up to the city. Vistabella top of the clubs in Valencian Finals With finalists in five of the seven disciplines Vistabella was the most successful club in this years Valencian Championships. Their first final was the Men Pairs won by Tony French & Ian Kenyon as mentioned last week and over the weekend we had Ian Kenyon in the Men's Singles closely losing to Drew Gerrard of San Miguel, it was Ian's third game of the day! Lynne Bishop, Maggie Furness & Eric Bishop played in the Triples final against San Luis, unfortunately they finished runners up, the Mixed Fours final Lynne Bishop, Charlie Watkins, Ken Cuthbert & Eric Bishop playing Quesada only just missed out on the winners trophy. Lastly on Monday morning it was Lynne & Eric Bishop playing their hearts out in their third consecutive final, the Mixed Pairs against Ann Allen & Stuart Denholm of San Miguel. playing just less than twenty matches from the start of the competition Lynne & Eric were weary but very determined and they got their just desserts to win the Mixed Pairs Trophy for Vistabella. During the quarter final they managed to score a 'Hot Shot'. "Vistabella top club"!! The Tournament was a great success and we would like to thank all the competition Co-ordinators, Referees etc for all their hard work. The Winter league started on Wednesday with a terrific away win at La Siesta, wins on all five rinks from teams skipped by Brian Dunn 14-2. Eric Bishop 22-14. Arthur Brown 24-5. Maggie Furness 19-11 and Ian Kenyon 25-13. Shots, Vistabella 105 (12) - (0) 55 La Siesta. No Berleen this week but thank you to those that played in a friendly. Valencian Titles for San Luis bowlers By Sheila Cammack. So here we are again, up and running with the start of the winter season, after the heat of the summer and the excitement of the Valencian Championships. We were proud to have representatives in the semi finals of the ladies singles; Shirley Verity, men's singles; Keith Jones, men's pairs; Colin Lindgren & Keith Jones & the mixed rinks; Colin Lindgren, Sabrina & Russell Marks & Keith Jones. However the icing on the cake was for June Jones & Sabrina Marks to win through as ladies pairs champions and for June Jones, Colin Lindgren & Keith Jones to become the mixed triples champions. Congratulations to everyone involved from all the clubs for making the championships so good to watch.

A good game with some great performances by Wilkinson, Hayworth and Jevons for the Jaguars and Jan Hassall, Cobbs and Samuels for the Hen's Teeth. Schofield a 1 x 100+, Hayworth had 2 x 100 and finished 3 legs D5, d16, d1; Jevons had 119, 100 and finished 4 legs d7, d13, d1, d7; Wilkinson finished 3 legs d1' d3, d10. El Capitan 9 - Tradewinds Pirates 0 - Oh dear, what happened during this match was that all the Tradewinds players disappeared into the secret hatch door underneath the dart board! Seriously though, obviously this was a disappointing night for the Pirates especially as they came face to face with some old rivals namely Walker, Hall and Bettel previously of Que Pasa Eagles. In spite of the rivalry, this game was lively and friendly with plenty of banter and good humour. Mark Filer formerly of Busters joined El Capitan along with Dutchmen and El Capitan owner Aroldas and son Edmunde

Klimonis. Most games came down to finishing, always a weak point for the Pirates. A Klimonis v Hirst (TP) took the first two legs in the singles with Aroldas and Hurst both scoring 100+. Filer v John Lane in the second saw Lane get the first 140 of the night but not enough to finish with Filer taking both legs. Eddie Klimonis fought hard to beat a strong Harvey Lane with Lane taking the first leg with 2 x 100+ and Eddie got 2 x 100+ and took the second single leg 2 x 1. The doubles saw pretty much of the same results as A Klimonis and John Walker v Badlove and H Lane with the Capitan men steering their ship to a 2 – 0 victory with some impressive scores from H Lane 105 and Walker 110. Second doubles we had Battal and Filer (Capitan) v Michelle Lane and Hirst and yet again some brilliant scoring from both sides and a close game, Filer 1 x 100+and Walker his second 100+ of the night. The final doubles with Hall and Eddie Klimonis (Capitan) v Gilly Kirby and John Lane. Lane took the first leg but Hall and Klimonis finished it off with some great skill and high scores from the duo i.e. Klimonis 2 x 100+ and Hall 1 x 100+. More of the same in the singles with Battel and Walker for Capitan winning their singles and a very close fought final single for Hall and Kirby with 1 x 100+ from Hall and 3 x 100 + from Kirby and 2 – 1 to Hall.

San Miguel Bowls Club - the ultimate hosts That's It! The Valencian Championships have finished for another year. A number of San Miguel players reached the semi finals in various disciplines - Lynne Greenland and Allan Patterson reached the semis in the mixed pairs, but unfortunately lost. Lynne Millar and Chris Parsons reached the final of the ladies pairs, and although played fantastic throughout the whole competition, didn't do it on the day. Stuart Denholm and Ann Allen played extremely well in the final of the mixed pairs. It was an very close game but they were pipped at the post. Drew Gerrard had a superb game against Ian Kenyon in the mens singles. It could have gone either way, but Drew held his nerve and lifted the cup at the presentation. Well done to you all.

The Winter league played their first game away at Greenlands, A couple of rinks were really close and it all depended on the last few ends. San Miguel won 9-3. Good start to the season. The Jaguars and Cougars held a pre-season friendly. The Jaguars won on 4 rinks, and Cougars won on 3. Shots for Jaguars 116. Cougars 91. Good luck for the forthcoming season. Three man advantage ‘tells the tale’. Back 9 secures Perito/Stewart win Vistabella hosted the Hub´s latest soiree, this time a two person ¨Texas Scramble¨, including a three person team when an unnamed Irishman registered twice leaving an odd number. The course is not everyones cup of tea, mainly due to just eleven holes, seven being played twice, but the members found it in very good condition, with the added bonus of the remaining 7 holes scheduled for completion in 2017.

tinued her amazing improvement with an excellent display of putting, leaving the big shots to the well known Geordie, Graeme Jackson. The Newcastle supporter will be striving to improve this event´s 3rd place when at Mar Menor where the Society´s penultimate Grand Prix event takes place. Chatterbox Jackson will attempt a podium finish to improve on his deserved eighth place in the current rankings.

The 25% of combined handicap worked excellently for all 2 person teams, but the concensus was that 10% of combined for the lone 3 person team gave them a distinct advantage. Whatever your viewpoint it proved decisive as the trio of Ben Chadwick, Andy Shaw and Brian Fenty came in with a gross two under par 71 and more importantly with a 4 shot handicap a nett 67 for a one shot win over Troy Norris and Colin Bell. Three shots separated the top three, suggesting all was well with the handicap system.

Surprisingly no 2´s were registered, incurring a “rollover” to the Jack Nicklaus course, the Hub´s next outing.

Record Turnout for Orange Tree at Riquelme

Length is the problem for Busters By Barry Grinsell Busters Golf Society October 2015 report We returned to Bonalba for this months game , I have to say Bonalba was in very good condition , greens consistent , fairways very good ( most bunkers with sufficient sand ) in fact everything about the course was excellent , this being the reason we like to play the course a couple of time a year with Busters if possible , the scoring on Friday didn’t seem so good , as although the conditions were better than they have been for some time with Bonalba and most courses having completed their hollow tining , the pins were often at the back of the greens and in many cases the tee off boxes had also been placed well back , sometimes almost on the white tee off boxes . Onto our winners our NTPs were won by , on hole four and eight Bill Peters , on hole eleven John Rush and hole fourteen was taken by Nikki Ead , all received our customary sleeve of three Srixon golf

balls , the BF9 was won with sixteen points by Barry Grinsell and the BB9 being won by Gordon Barclay with thirteen points both receiving cash prizes , better front and back nines were achieved by our first three places but these are not included for our BBF or BB nines prize money , in third place with twenty eight points was Bill Peters , second place was taken by Brian Ead who tied with our winner John Rush who also had thirty points but was our winner by means of a BB9 , all three had cash prizes . We returned as normal to the Mini Golf bar which is located a few minutes away from Quesada’s arches for our usual plate of sausage , chips with bread and butter taken before and after with a couple of pints of the landlords best . Next month sees us at Alto Real another favourite of many local golf societies .

San Miguel Blues take early lead in Quesada League Match 1. Here we are again the first match of the 2015/2016 season. This year we have six teams with the addition of Club 25 from La Serena and Coopers Arms in Quesada. A warm welcome from the League to both of them and hope they have a good season. The day started bright, hot and sunny and stayed the same all day. Scores were very much up and down through the 18 holes but in the end two teams came in leading the pack. We will see how the scores change next month. After the much needed 19th hole everybody left thinking of next

Firstly I would like to start by correcting some misinformation in the last report published from this golf society. It stated that the green fee was €45 from the IRM group, this was a mistype on my behalf and is in fact incorrect. Myself and the society would like to offer our apologies to the IRM group for any embarrassment this may havef caused. We all met once again for our society day out at The Orange Tree Bar and Restaurant for an excellent breakfast. We had our biggest ever turn out and in fact had to have reserves on our list due to not having enough tee-times and buggies available. Proving once again this society is going from strength to strength, making bit difficult to know how many tee-times to pre-book. Saying all this we set off for Riquelme to play a wonderful course although difficult and long. All our players love this course and is in wonderful condition. The weather for golf was prefect, very little wind and beautiful sunshine, although not to warm. The Captain decided on a four man team playing a 2-3-4 competition. The winners were, as shown in the picture, Ian Ring, Chris Tait, Stuart Robertson and Nigel Cawthra with a score of 108 points. 2nd were Martin Lowe, Willy, Tony Chandler and Mike Newton with 104 points. NTP´s (or should we say the Chris Tait prize) were Chris Tait on the 5th, 7th and 15th with Mike Riley bucking the trend with the 17th. Chris also got a two on the 7th. Making his and the family night a wineful night.. We all returned back to The Orange Tree for snacks and drinks, thanks to Chris, Viv, Nigel, Lilly, Jo, Brian, Michelle, Dean, Hannah, Keva, Gareth, Georgie, Shaun and Lauren for the excellent welcome and service. Another reason why we are growing so fast. The next event is on Tuesday 20th October at El Valle. We all meet at The Orange Tree on the Monday night prior (19th October) between 5 and 6pm to pay the green fee and make the draw etc.. Plus to meet up for a pre game drink with good friends. The list is on the noticeboard within the restaurant and has you can see we are very popular so your name needs to be put down quickly to secure your place. You can also ring the restaurant on 965323235, email on orangetree@hotmail.es or visit the website www.orangetree-caboroig.com where we have a golf section. Everyone is welcome within this friendly golf society, plus the earlier you put your name down the better chance we have of obtaining the right number of tee-times and buggies.

The clubhouse is large in size with an upper veranda giving views over the putting green and the opening and closing holes and excellent bar, restaurant and changing facilities. The course practice facilities are second to none with the golf academy comprising of a 36 bay, 2 tier driving range, 2 putting greens, practice bunker and a 6 hole practice course. This course is most definitely for the lower handicap and longer hitter amongst you although there is no punishing rough for the higher handicap players and ladies they will find themselves ‘thrashing’ away with long irons and fairway metal woods due to the overall length. Dave Thomas has given golfers of all standards something to think about with strategically placed bunkers and water hazards but the majority of the problems arise from the overall length of this 18 hole, par 72 course, which claims to be the longest in Spain at 6,724 metres from the competition tees. Newcomers to the course will be intrigued by the areas of ‘waste’ bunkers that line most fairways. Like many other courses in the region there are a number of water hazards (eight in total) and they are to be avoided at all costs and for the energetic golfers amongst you the course is relatively flat and not too difficult to walk.

Getting ready for the off

In general if you wish to play well on this course you must take the fairway bunkers out of play on the tee shots by playing short or taking them out of play ‘on the fly’ and then keeping the approach shot below the flags because many of the greens are large and undulating and very easy to 3 putt. First hole in one for TMGS comes from a Swedish Guest It was just one of those days’, we haven’t visited this course for more than a year and wow! 43 members and guests turned out to play on this immaculately manicured course. Recognition must go to Jose and his staff for giving us such a warm welcome and presenting the course in great condition. Swedish member Karin Alm had brought a long a few “girl” friends from Sweden as guests. The 7th Hole at Roda is a tricky par 3 surrounded by water, which is where most balls end up, but Mrs. E. Lovden-Persson, one of Karin’s guests totally ignored the water and hit it straight into the hole for hers and the Societies first hole in one. Can you imagine the noise that 4 screaming ladies can make; we heard them from the 10th green. Whilst on the subject of good shots, John Hettrick managed a “2” on the same hole to win the 2’s pot which had been rolled over from the last two weeks, and as his was the only 2, that putt was worth €103. Well done John. Our membership continues to grow with new members coming from most European countries, the latest additions come from Holland and it’s now beginning to show that the Vikings are not having things all their own way, there was even a discussion last week on our Facebook page between a Swede and a Norwegian on who is a Viking. However in the N.T.P.’s competition the Norwegians did send in reinforcements in the form of twin sisters Tove and Turid, I’m told that the only way to tell them apart is that Turid wears earrings and Tove doesn’t anyway Turid was nearest on the 13th, Dutchman Fred Kras couldn’t be beat on hole 11 and John Hettrick took both hole 3 and hole 7. The Swedish ladies dominated the visitors category with the hole in one winner also took 3rd place on 28 pts. Englishman M. Stanton took 2nd place with 29 pts. and winner of this category was Mrs. C. Kinefelt with 31 pts. Argentinian, Claudio Torres bid his farewell before he leaves for Argentina next week with a 4th place 31 pts. Mr. Consistency Mick Kennedy was 3rd with 34 pts. Colin Marsden resumed normality after last week’s relapse at Las Ramblas with level par 36 pts. As I

said earlier the Dutchmen are coming and recent member Fred Kras took 1st place with the best score of the day 37 pts. In the Gold cat-

egory 4 countries were represented and in 4th place was Englishman and Captain John Eyre with 33 points on higher handicap.3rd place went to Dutchman Ger Nicolasen with the lower handicap on the same score. Swedish member Arne Hansson came 2nd on 34 pts. and top of the shop was Norwegian Kjell Aasebo on 35 pts. Our player of the month competition was won by Mick Kennedy. Our next competitions are at 14th La Finca, 21st La Serena and 28th Villamartin.Photo; Gold category winners. Guests from all nationalities are welcome to join us, come along to experience a great atmosphere on and off the course. Brani wonder goal brings crowds to their feet CD Torrevieja ..............2 CF Orihuela .................0

Receiving a pass from fellow Croatian substitute Matej, Torry's playmaker Brani nonchalantly danced past 5 defenders, before unleashing a sweet drive from the edge of the box, giving Orihuela keeper Emilio absolutely no chance. Arriving on 82 mins, Torry's 2nd goal ended the game as a contest, rewarding Pedreno's team for all their endeavour shown. What was so pleasing, was that a goodly crowd of over 700 hopefully liked what they saw, and will frequently return to Vicente Garcia with some friends. Not only was this a first ever div 3 victory over their near neighbours, but it went some way towards restoring pride after last seasons humiliating performances against the men in yellow. Ok, so they've still got a long way to go before a serious challenge at a play off slot can be considered, although certain missing ingredients from their game have returned. Without doubt the defence are showing shape after numerous experimental permutations, no longer relying on Oscar to bail them out, whilst the desire to win is at long last evident throughout the team. How nice to take the lead for a change, as apart from the Muro match, they have been desperate to find an equalizing goal. Vicente provided the opportunity after only 7 mins, when his cross was clearly handled by Franco, giving Cesar the chance to show just how to take a penalty. Cesar should have scored again on 35 mins, but he wastefully blasted over Carrasco's assist. Five minutes later, a well worked move involv-

Imanyo celebrate 2nd edition of José Domingo Garcia Gallud Memorial Cup This is the second time this cup has been played for as the society is twelve months old this month, we are proud that Imanyo bar sponsored the day. As usual we all arrived early at Imanyo’s where the day started with the traditional full English breakfast. The format was full handicap stableford and included four holes that were worth double points, which were needed! On arriving at the course we received a friendly greeting from the staff, the course was in its usual great condition and the weather superb for golf. Last year’s winner, Chris Baillie, was here to defend the cup but just missed out by finishing third only two points behind the eventual winner. Winner of the José Domingo Garcia Gallud Memorial Cup was Eamon Murphy with 36 points, runner up was Judy Evans on 35 points, the Endeavour award went to Ted Adams, but we won’t mention how many points! Best score front 9 was Judy Evans on 21 points and best score back 9 was Eamon Murphy on 20 points, The nearest the pins were won, hole 3 Graham Rumsey, hole 8 John Buckman, holes 12 and 16 were won by “Defending Champion” Chris Baillie, there was no winner on hole 17. The presentation was held at Imanyo’s where Antonio presented the prizes on behalf of his family. Afterwards we finished with the usual good food and drink, thank you to Antonio, Norma and all the staff for looking after us and once again thanks to Harry Goldsmith, our in house photographer. The football card was won by Ronnie King (Chelsea) who donated half back to our Parkinson’s charity.
