The Shattered Jewel R esidents of the Orihuela Costa continue in their demands for action to repair one of Orihuela Costa's top tourist attractions, the coastal walkway, which literally sits "on the edge of a cliff."

The old Cabo Roig promenade, which runs along the edge of cliffs, connecting the region’s beaches from Cala Capitán to La Caleta, continues to deteriorate all too quickly and still with no sign that it is likely to be halted or repaired.

The pathway is becoming increasingly dangerous to pedestrians who are at the mercy of landslips from above as well as a succession of gaping holes. There are parts of the path that are easy walking, but there are also long stretch-

es of loose stone, some areas where you need to climb over boulders, and plenty of ascents and descents where you need to watch every footstep because of the dangerous condition of the "path". Continued on Page 02

Overseas voters who are re-registering to vote or newly applying to use a postal vote in the days running up to the deadlines should seriously consider the option of a proxy, as at that stage there will be reduced time needed to send out, complete, and return a postal vote from overseas. MINORITY COALITION FORMED BY PSOE AND PODEMOS

The election was ‘a gamble that failed’ for the caretaker PM

ad the two parties come to the same arrangement a couple of weeks ago they could have saved the country the need for a General Election but the seeming intransigence of the caretaker Prime Minister has cost taxpayers in the region of 200 million euro while the country is still no further forward.

H

but their tentative governing pact, announced just two days after the election, is at least hopeful.

Despite months of negotiations between the PSOE and Podemas to strike a governing deal following the poll held last April, the two leaders have done this deal less than 48 hours after Sunday’s vote. It is understood that in the terms of the agreement the Podemas leader, Pablo Iglesias, will become deputy Prime Minister.

The emergence of the far right Vox party as a major political force in the country is also likely to hinder any attempts by Mr Sánchez to seek a conciliatory solution to the Catalan crisis.

The election was ‘a gamble that failed’ said The Economist, and while Sánchez’s socialists emerged as the biggest party, they are no closer to being able to form a majority in the country’s fractured parliament than they were before Sunday’s vote. “Much hard bargaining still lies ahead.” The two left-wing parties are still short of a majority in parliament and will need the acquiescence of either conservative or regional parties, including Catalan independence parties, to come to power,

The election exercise also saw the two parties lose seats, 3 and 7 respectively, while it also fuelled the recovery of the Socialists' archrivals on the right, the PP, which regained many of the seats that it lost in April's ballot.

The one other party that also saw a major reshuffle of its political fortunes was Ciudadanos which, seven months ago had 57 seats; now they have just 10, and the party’s leader, Albert Rivera, resigned from politics on Monday. The one local casualty from the C’s was former Orihuela Deputy Mayor Lopez Bas who also lost his seat in congress, a seat that he had held for just 7 months. However, if the caretaker PM is to bring some stability to his government he will now need to enter into talks with the other political groups who supported his successful motion of no-confidence against former PP Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy last summer in the move that saw the Socialist politician take power. Sánchez has said that he is willing to negotiate with all political groups, except those that promote hate speech, in reference to the far-right Vox, one of the big winners of the election.

Hopes are high as Poppy Count gets underway

T

his year the Poppy Appeal is aiming to raise over £50 million to help support serving and ex-serving members of the Armed Forces community and their families. To help reach that target, over 150,000 volunteers were out on the streets, markets and in shopping centres across the UK and many European countries including here in Spain. Although local branches have been busy raising funds for those ‘needy’ ex-servicemen and their dependants since the beginning of the year, their activities have increased dramatically in recent weeks as they set out on their final fundraising ‘efforts’ of the year with the ‘Poppy Appeal’ in the knowledge that all of the monies collected will be used to support cases here in Spain. Currently the members from 28 branches, 12 on the Costa del Sol, and the remainder from the areas that make up Spain District North, predominantly the Costa Blanca, Calida and Almeria, have also been busy during recent weeks, collecting your thousands of donations. With poppies and collection boxes distributed to

over 600 bars, restaurants and other locations across the region, the four local branches mobilised their ‘armies’ of volunteers, in Mid-October. They were active at Alicante airport, as well as pounding the streets at local markets, supermarkets and shops, in addition to many dozens of other venues and collection outlets. Last year the Branches in La Marina/Gran Alacant, Hondón Valley, Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa, raised over 80,000 euro, an amount which they will be hoping to surpass when totals are tallied up in the coming days. On the Orihuela Costa it was boosted by the presence of two Chelsea Pensioners, Wayne Campbell and Skippy Teasdale, who were collecting at La Zenia Boulevard and in the Plaza at Villamartin. Neither of the two venues have been used for some years but the amounts collected in both locations suggest that they will, in future, be important additions to the annual list, as also will all Overseas Supermercados stores who were once again kind enough to allow collectors to sit inside their entrances. In some branches many of the poppy collection tins are still to be emptied and the monies counted, so the final figure for the District will not be released for some time, however the major Orihuela Costa and District count took place yesterday, Sunday’ at the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras. When speaking to the Leader, local appeal organiser Eddie Coleman seemed in buoyant mood. “We have done most of the counting but we still have the banking to do. I hope, nevertheless, that we will have the final figure in the next couple of weeks,” he said. “Our volunteers have been amazing and we raised just under 50,000 euro last year so anywhere approaching that amount will be an excellent achievement. Watch this space!” Spain District North has 16 Branches and all of them arrange regular and varied social events, as well providing support to our beneficiaries. Local Branches meet in Gran Alacant, Hondon Valley, Torrevieja and on the Orihuela Costa. New members are always welcome and you do not need to have an Armed Forces background to enjoy all the Branch has to offer.

Dredging of Guardamar Port will take 3 months The Guardamar Council has started dredging works in the mouth of the new Segura Riverbed where a build-up of sludge, causing a lack of depth, has paralysed fishing and sports activities for weeks. The first step is to prepare an area where the sediment extracted from the Segura can be deposited, understood to be a municipal plot that is located a few meters from the port. Dredging of the area will make the channel navigable again and recover its draft so that fishing

and tourist vessels can once again begin to use the area. The dredging got underway with the arrival of a floating pontoon and other equipment that “will be placed in the river, and will remove the sediment so that it can be deposited in trucks and then dumped in the nearby municipal plot, according to sources in a statement. Although the term of execution of the works is calculated in three months "we will do everything possible so that the deadlines are much shorter and that the economic sectors that operate in the area of the mouth can return to normal," according to the government. The dredging plans to extract about 30,000 cubic meters of sediment that has been accumulated by sandy contributions from the waves, the sea tides and the Segura. The draft is currently just over a meter when it should be between 3 and 3.5 mtrs The cost of the operation is 300,000 euros and will be borne by the Guardamar Council so that there are no procedural delays and the dredging can be carried out as a matter of urgency so as to restore sufficient draft for navigation. The mouth of the Segura is part of a protected area and the sludge removed requires special treatment, as these sediments do not always have the best environmental conditions.

The most useless inventions in the history of [one] mankind Is it only me, or do these following ‘inventions’ really work for you? How many of you can remember when ‘super-glue’ was invented? There was an advert on TV showing a crane lifting a car by a chain attached to a small metal plate which was stuck to the roof of the car with super-glue. I never tried that trick, but I have tried sticking a picture to the wall with it and fixing back the wayward sole of a shoe. The only object that super-glue will stick for me is one finger to another. These little silver milk jugs they give you in hotels and restaurants: Hands up those of you who don’t have to use your napkin to wipe the dribbled milk from the table? They should feck these useless containers in the bin and leave the milk carton on the table. You could now have the grandest head of black, brown, steely-grey, or just a hint of grey in your gorgeous hair; and control the colour through the number of drops of Grecian you combed in daily. I tried it. I wanted that same distinguished appearance of the TV guy – even though I was good enough at the time. They say that dogs grow to resemble their owner … well, thanks to Grecian 2000 I grew to resemble my dog. Brownie, my collie dog and I sported the same type and colour of streaks on the top of our heads. I actually had to dye my hair for a spell until the ‘invention’ grew out of it. I am not much of a cook: The kitchen is not my forte. My culinary skills peaked with the frying pan. Is it just me, or have any of you ever come across a non-stick pan that doesn’t? The worst fall I ever got was when the two feet went from under me whilst mopping the floor of the pub toilet. I like to keep my non-slip tiles clean, you understand. ‘Moss-remover’ – you know the one: ‘Free your yard, patio and driveway from unwanted moss …etc’. I swear before whoever is the patron saint of inventions, that I shook, scattered, sprayed, sprinkled and blew every type of powder and liquid that had the word ‘moss’ written on the label and yet, the driveway continued to be the greenest part of my domain. That was until the brother, Camillus, (who knows everything) advised me to try sprinkling soap powder on the moss. Luckily I had the soap powder, solely because I only washed the one non-iron shirt. It worked for me folks, and if it works for you, don’t forget to buy the brother a pint next time you see him. Turkey tourist tax boost for Spain?

Monday 18th - Sunday 24th November, 2019

A tourist tax in Turkey is certain to benefit Spain

By Andrew Atkinson SPAIN could be set to benefit - after Turkey announced it is to impose a tourist 'tax' on visitors in 2020. British holidaymakers made 2.3 million visits to Turkey in 2018, heading to the beach resorts in Antalya, Alanya, Bodrum and Oludeniz. Now they could be set to return to Spain in the new year - having snubbed Spain in recent years - to get better value for their money. With the euro/pound exchange cur-

rently trading at 1.17€ to £1 British holidaymakers are set to flock back to Spain - aided by Turkey's tourist tax next year. A family of four will face an increase on average of £30 per person, for a two weeks' holiday at a 5 star hotel in Turkey - racking up a whopping £120 hike. Holidaymakers jetting to Turkey next summer will have to dig deeper into their pockets with the announcement of Turkish government's levy. The tax will be imposed for all tourists aged above 12 years-old, determined by hotel classification. The Turkish government hopes to raise as much as £350 million from the tax. A levy was introduced in the Balearic islands of Majorca, Ibiza and Menorca in 2017, of approximately £3.50 per person per night, a move criticised by Hoteliers and tourists. Tourist taxes in the UK have not been ruled out in 2020 - with Oxford and Edinburgh proposing daily tourist taxes. And Birmingham have also looked at a possible hotel levy - to aid costs of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the West Midlands.

747 jet abandoned at Valencia airport By Andrew Atkinson A 747 jumbo jet that has been left idol after being 'abandoned' at Valencia Airport is set to be auctioned - or scrapped. The 747 is amongst two dozen aircraft at Valencia Airport that will go under the hammer - if their owners do not come forward. A Valencia Airport spokesperson said: "The authorities are awaiting owners to come forward. "A set time limit is in place - if aircraft owners do not come forward the planes will be auctioned." Following the situation at Valencia Airport The Leader researched airports - and looks at the largest Industrial airport in Europe at Teruel, Spain's smallest Provincial capital. Commercial flights have never been made there. New, serviceable aircraft are stored in Teruel, reportedly ready to fly - awaiting for financial or legal issues to be formally completed. Aeroplanes are also at Teruel, due to airlines needing to temporarily adjust capacity, cited by fluctuating market conditions. The airport was built to also hold aircraft from all over the world - no longer in service, temporarily or permanently, with a percentage undergoing maintenance. Some aircraft have been scrapped, stripped for parts and spares. Teruel is a high-altitude town in the mountainous Aragon region of eastern Spain. Teruel airport Director Alejandro Ibrahim said: "Since the airport opened we have already welcomed a company testing rocket engines.

Norwegian doomed - Ryanair CEO O’Leary By Andrew Atkinson

According to O’Leary, Norwegian management are reportedly having to seek additional funding, and a restructuring of their debt.

Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary - whose budget airline company made €1.45billion profit in 2018 - says rival carrier Norwegian is doomed. Norwegian became favoured in the European global aviation industry for longhaul low-cost (LHLC) model - cutting fares - in a highly competitive market. Since Norwegian have reportedly switched its strategy from growth to profitability, cutting some long-haul routes, along with management reportedly having to seek additional funding, and a restructuring of debt. On Norwegian’s business model not viable, O’Leary flagged up their recent action in the sale of five Boeing 737-800 aircraft, to a unit of China Aircraft Leasing Group Holdings Limited. Norwegian said in a statement that the sale is in line with the company’s continued strategy of capitalising on the scale built up over the last few years and the changed focus from growth to profitability. “They’re now resorting to selling the aircraft, to raise 50 million bucks, which wouldn’t pay the fuel bill for a week," said O'Leary.

"We have been active in the field of drone research and have a pilot training centre here."

"Norwegian is doomed, the business model doesn’t work and they’re saddled now with enormous debts.

Teruel airport's location has a dry continental climate - ideal conditions for aircraft storage - and is an accessible location between Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia.

"It’s only a matter of time before it goes bust,” O'Leary, reportedly said. O’Leary’s views arrive on the back of air-

lines, including Primera Air and Wow Air, as evidence that the model isn’t viable. “We do not see LHLC as a threat to incumbents and do not expect the model to survive on its own on the trans-Atlantic market,” research notes from analysts Bernstein said, citing rising costs will lead to increased prices. The researcher also reportedly claims that cost advantages enjoyed by the LHLC carriers, that enable low prices, are small. Bernstein also predicts new midsize fuel-efficient aircraft could see the LHLC model successful - where it is easier to operate planes at full capacity - like in Asia. Ryanair chief executive O’Leary could land a reported €99m

(£88m) bonus, within five years. O'Leary's current pay and annual bonus will be halved - to a total maximum €1m a year. O'Leary will have an option to buy 10m shares - at a fixed price of €11.12 a share. If Ryanair, either record €2bn profit, in any one year by 2024, or should the share price rise above €21, the latter profit on O’Leary’s share options would be worth an estimated €99m.

On Monday the Pintos played host to Quesada Diamonds with a rather blustery wind making bowling rather difficult. But both sides played some good bowls, with many close matches, that could have gone either way, we were in good company though and all seemed to enjoy the match. The Pintos came out on top though taking the rinks by 4 to 2 and the overall shots. The Raiders had a Bye. On Friday the Mustangs entertained Quesada Swallows on a sunny morning with a rapidly developing cold wind, which seemed to chill the bones and made the bowls difficult with its changing strength. But both teams kept their spirits high, though some including myself needed an extra jacket to warm up the muscles. We did however have a splendid morning, the Mustangs ended with the upper hand taking the rinks by 4 to 2 and the overall shots by just 3 shots. Ann C Taylor, Denise Morgan and Bob Morgan 21-15. Barbara Jones, Malc Sykes and Bob Taylor 22-14. Diane Yates, Sheila Cox and Richard Lee 38-13. Val Ryder, Mick Cox Henry Ryder 7-34. Sarah Taylor, John Richards and Jim Gracie 8-24. Irene Thomson, Jim Taylor, Eddie Thomson 22-15. Meanwhile the Broncos were away to another Quesada team, the Swans and played well to come away with 2 rinks and we must always remember that whether you win or lose depends as much on your opponents as yourselves. Gaynor John, David Baker and Brian Harris 5-42. Dolly Ford, Sue Ziepe and Marion Haynes 13-19. Janet Wright, Debbie Ham and Steve Ziepe 18-13. Ngaio Baldwin. Pete Baldwin and Ron Greenstreet 16-20. Brian Gilham, Gary Dunstone and David Wright17-13. Peter Blackburn, Paul Durham and Rob Clark 13-21 . For info contact Sheila Cox at: micksheilacox@gmail.com

The Blues (Division B) welcomed Emerald Isle Claymores to La Siesta which resulted with the Blues winning 8-6 (Shots 108-99). Rinks won; Val & Tony Dalton, Pat Reilly (20-12). Pat Harman, Brian Gardiner & Jean Cooper (21-15). Tricia Reilly, Florence & Mike Edward's (19-15). All the other games went very close, with one of the rinks only losing by a single shot. Also, in Division B the Golds were hosted by Montemar Matadors where the Golds played well in defeat and weren't able to pick up any points despite having three of the rinks losing by a marginal amount of only one shot, with another rink battling from being well behind to get within two going into the last end. (Shots 79-109). In the Enterprise Division the Apollos travelled only a few Kilometres down the road to play a local derby against the Trekkers at San Luis which the Apollos gained a 9-5 win (Shots 114-106). Winning rinks; Ramsey Sinclair, Norman Adcroft & George Richardson (24-14). Dave Davies, Tony Dalton & Vic Mahomet (2514). Pat Harman, Brian Gardiner & Jean Cooper (21-12). Pat Reilly’s team were not giving up and wanted the two points, but it ended with both teams having to share the spoils (15-15). An away game for the Pioneers against Greenlands Chestnuts in the Voyager Division which they lost 5-9, Dave Laverick’s team played well with the game finishing (15-15) and having to share the points with the opponents. Both teams showed a good attitude throughout the game, and some of the rinks could have gone either way as it shows on the overall total (Shots 88-89). Rink winners; Alan Carr, Derick Smith & Ros Stockell (19-13). Rod Edgerton, Wendy & Alan Ralph (18-6). Being on a high from last week’s win La Siesta (Winter League) travelled north to play BBC hoping to bring back another win, and with a couple of games going very close, they were unfortunate only to be able to win on one of the rinks 2-10 (Shots 62-100). Well done to rink winners; Sheila Millward, Val Dalton, Trish & Pat Reilly (18-17). Good play by all, there is always next week. If interested in joining this friendly club, just call Jim or Lyn on 690190523 or pop in and talk to the President (George) or Club Captain (Sue).

The twelfth match was a real belter, Sierra 3x100, 125, taking the first leg on D8, Rouffignac 140, 137, levelling on D18. An edgy D5 from Sierra gave the visitors their eighth leg, both players earning MOTM awards. On any other night Wing would have earned the accolade, with 3x100 and five winning doubles, bad luck Mr Wing. Hyenas notched up their sixth consecutive victory this season over hosts the Loungers. A slow start from both, only two tons, the finishing however was sound, Lee Holtham D9, and Paul Durrant D16, D2, giving the Hub a comfortable lead after the triples. Chemies hotshots Graham Robertson 100,140, and Billy Dolling 100 D4, did their upmost to stem the tide in the opening pair, but Holtham and Durrant 2x100, 125, D10, D20, held out for 0-4. Cyril Harrison and Simon Williams 120, DD10, D20 added another without reply. Bob Taylor D16 and Joe Miller D11 made it six to nothing.

At long last this week the Ale House showed the form they are capable of. Their 20+ ton haul was reflected in the score line at the Trinity venue, who themselves found the T20 regularly. lt was, however, the visiting " Lads " who got off to a flyer, taking all three triples via Andre Wing D12, in the first D12 in the third, Ben Lane D20 in the second. Trinity reduced the deficit in the next, Ron Chadwick D7 and Paul Cripwell D19, overcoming Alan Havelock 2x100, 140 and the free scoring Dario Sierra D20, 2-1. Karl Mallinson D5 and Wing 100, D20 made it 0-4 for the Lads. Brian Nash 2x100, 95, D4 and skipper Yvonne Rouffignac D8 got back to within two at the break. Havelock continued his excellent form with a 2-0 bashing of Martin Hastings 153, with 2x100, 95 and D4, D17. Chadwick D8, D20, kept the Pirates in the hunt, only for Christian Boorman 2x100, D1,D3 to ensure at least a draw. Jeff Ward 100 hit D16 for the third leg against

Some tasty Chemies fayre followed before Alex Nikolov wrapped up the match on D10, opponent Jimmy Mackay 116, 100, just failing to take the tie to three legs. Gareth Bevan had the unenviable task of facing an in form Robertson 125, 100, D2, but coped well and enjoying some good fortune hitting 116, 140 plus the winning doubles both on D20. Dolling unusually had trouble this week finding theT20, doubles were however easier as D20 and D5, registered Chemies first leg. Joe Cuyt couldn't get going against Durrant who took both legs D2, D20, for 1-9. Chief host Mark Sommerville added a second point for his side with D10, D19, Miller sitting on a double after 2x100 and a second leg D10. Taylor made it ten for the Hyenas playing Jack Morris 100, with a best of the night 90 out, T18, D18, plus 100, 121. Robertson and Durrant were mentioned in MOTM despatches. The Toppers welcomed back Andy Rutter this week for his first match this season along with side-kick Paul Miller. Andy showed them what they had been missing, taking them to 1-0 lead on D14. Landlord Andy Gildea backed him up in the 2nd triples and Graham Solomons in the 3rd. Rutter was back with some impressive scoring in the first pairs 123, 100, 140 but it was partner Lee Maiden that did the important stuff, D1, D4 this time. The Toppers were swaggering on a 5 - 0 lead when Captain Roger Phipps of HMS Legends poked them in the eye with D15 and D5 to give them something to think about over their mustard chicken. Wishing to make a name for himself on his brief sojourn in Iberia, Rutter counter attacked in his singles against Lofty Les Adams. They both scored superbly, clocking up 10 ton pluses between them, Les achieving an 18 darter but Rutter stealing the show D10, and a 112 out on T20-20-D16. Solomons then dispensed with Steve Monk Dalton on his favourite D16 twice with good scoring from both. Perhaps a little over-confident from things thus far, the Toppers mistakenly took their foot off the pedal and one by one, the Legends came back at them taking the last 4 singles in succession with some great play from new signings - Shana Van Nieuwenhoven and Joeri Molenberghs, both holding previous world rankings. MOTMGraham Solomons and Roger Phipps

Tucked away in the back streets of San Miguel, seven 'Bullies' lurked in wait for the arrival of the Tairas...when they eventually found a parking space. Four drive rounds at least gave them the lay of the land in case they needed a quick getaway. An unimpressive first triples gave the Bullies a head start when Steph Simpson checked out 5-D5 despite a 114 from Pat Schofield to whittle the Tiaras down too. Captain 'Windy' de Lacy evened things up in the next triples with a 117 and a D12 out. The Bullies took the next 5 games in succession, Terry Brindley getting a 180 and Steph Simpson a 174 but all games going down to a finish for both sides with Lesley Eagles getting a 3-darter check-out as the only evidence of the Tiaras efforts in the pairs. A chorizo beany stew was served at the halfway stage- not necessarily the best choice for the flatulent captain of the Tiaras - but none the less well received. Wendy Hayward scooped a 2-1 win over Alan 'Elbow' Charmian 117, D4, D20 but then Elizabeth Cowan, Pat and Lesley were all robbed of further victories, succumbing 2-1 a piece in their singles against John Spencer, Terry and Super Mario Garcia. The last laugh was had by the Tiaras as de Lacy took the final game D2, 20-D20 against Brother Antonio. A total of 27 legs played showed that is was a closely fought contest and could very easily have been a draw. MOTM for the Bullies was awarded to Terry for his 180 and general cuddliness and jointly to Lesley Eagles for her high scoring and Sharon Marshall for playing with her left hand, in a good deal of pain from her broken right arm. The Hellraisers hosted the Pint Depot Queens and knew from previous experience it was going to be a long but enjoyable night. Rachel Broadhead took the first treble for the visitors with a D2 but newbie Ann Taylor pulled it back for the Hellraisers with a convincing D17. Lorraine Cox put the Queens ahead again with D18 and teammate Jeanette Crooks throwing an impressive 106. All the doubles went to the Hellraisers with Cheryl McGlynn throwing 75, 72 and 95 to get the scores down for partner Ann to finish on D1; the youngster Paige McCarthy winning the D1 battle and Jan Hassall checking out on D3. Could the Hellraisers smell success or was that just the delicious pasta bolognaise that Cheryl had prepared? On to the first single and Paige McCarthy threw an impressive 124 and 74 but lost the epic D1 battle to Queen Rachel Broadhead. Undeterred, the Hellraisers kept their cool with Alison Scammell finishing on a D4, then Jan Hassell D13 and Ann Taylor clinched the match with a D1. Cheryl McGlynn and Sue Spiers both delivered D1 finishes after midnight to make it a 9-3 victory for the home team. MOTMs Paige McCarthy and Rachel Broadhead. P.L.L. Capt. Fernando steers Monte in promotion bid By Andrew Atkinson CD Montesinos are set to bounce back to the Valencia 1st Regional G8 at the first attempt under the captaincy of Fernando - but his feet are firmly on the ground. "Amongst my biggest achievements in football was promotion with the club in the 2016-17 season - with it being my home town - and as captain." "In contrast, the biggest disappointment was suffering relegation last season," said Fernando, who has been at the Los Montesinos, Alicante based club since the age of eight. Fernando, 32, who has also tasted promotion during his spell with Torrevieja youth, in the third division, began playing football, aged six. "At the age of eight I joined Los Montesinos," said Fernando, who remained there, until he was 11. Talisman Fernando has also played at CD Montesinos, Almoradi, Elche, Torrevieja and Orihuela, during a career spanning over 2 decades.

"I returned to CD Montesinos, aged 24, eight seasons ago," said Fernando, who says the biggest influence in his career was ex-Monte coach Carlos.

Poor performance from Orihuela Costa Veteranos

This season CD Montesinos are under the helm of coach Jesus Santander, and Photo of Fernando courtesy Fernando said: Full Monte Supporters Club "Hopes are high for the 2019-20 season. Jesus has managed to create a great technical staff, and a very good background staff."

The visitors took advantage of the prevailing wind and eased into a comfortable first half lead. With the score at 1-4 the home team then had a player sent off for a late tackle with most in the ground expecting a yellow to be shown. Some theatrics by the Torrevieja player didn’t help however and a red was produced from the referees pocket.

Monte see themselves at the top of the 2nd Regional table: "We have started well, and we have to continue working hard. The aim is to be as high as possible and see where we are at the end of the season," said the Real Madrid fan. Fernando, who also has interests in motorcycling, tennis and basketball, along with being a general football fanatic, said: "We will not get carried away. Our feet remain firmly on the ground." Fernando, who relaxes away from football, dining with his wife and friends, said: "We aren't shouting from the rooftops." Next week Monte stalwart Dmitry talks exclusively to The Leader.

Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Golf Equipment - Gloves Golf equipment can be expensive and there are certain golfing consumables that you will purchase repeatedly such as golf balls, tee pegs and golf gloves. We have discussed which type of golf balls to use to suit your golf in previous articles but not yet discussed golf gloves. These can be expensive these days and although you can get bargain gloves from outlets such as Decathlon and Sports Direct or from the internet, generally you get what you pay for. Assuming you have paid circa €15 for a golf glove just how do you make it last longer so that you get your monies worth? Here are a few tips: Practice on the range with an older glove. Store the glove flat and in a plastic sleeve when not in use. Take the glove off between shots. Wash the glove in a washing machine with other items of the household wash with a soft detergent. Check the glove for ‘wear markings’ because if the wear pattern is on the palm you could have a problem with your grip or have handle of the incorrect size and if the wear pattern is under the thumb you could be gripping to hard. Just give the above a try and you will find it saves you a few hard earned pennies. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing

There couldn’t have been a closer result in Monday’s ‘best 2 scores from 4 with all counting on the par 3s’. With 100 points and winning on countback were Ron Luffman, Graham Murray, Mike Chapman and Nora Betts. In second place and just losing out on the back 9 it was Nick Campbell, Reg Akehurst, Yvonne Phipps and Hendrick Oldenziel. It went to countback again in Wednesday’s Stableford. Dean Tracey took first place with 36 points beating a very handsome local golf correspondent with a better back nine (and I missed a very short putt on the 18th!) Sorry no ‘photo of Dean available at time of going to print so I’ve included Dick instead. Trevor Pullyblank picked up the bronze medal with 35 points. Just one ‘2’ today which was carded by Pat Cassidy (who went home with more money than the winner!) Well, with so many of the games this week being close, our winners in Friday’s 6x6x6 won by a

country mile! With 87 points it was Alan Douglas, Richard Connock, Jan Svendsen and Albert who beat runners up Olga Douglas, John Drakesmith, John Dobson and Allen McClusky by a clear 10 points. Por ultimo, for anyone thinking of changing their sport, Don Carter once commented, ‘One of the advantages bowls has over golf is that you seldom lose a bowling ball’. Pues hasta la semana que viene

Thader punished for defensive lapses Thader CD................1 FB Redovan CF..........3

This was the game that all Thader fans had been waiting for, but alas it all went pear shaped. During the summer, manager David Saez left Thader to join Redovan, taking a number of players with him. Of those, Miki, Javi, Hector and May were all in the starting line up for this local derby grudge match. Thader meanwhile welcomed back captain Lloyd, Vicente and Victor, although leading scorer Rafa Gomez was still sidelined through injury. To add extra spice to the match, Thader's newly appointed manager Joaquin Mas was making his debut. Following last weeks defeat at Horadada, Thader's board wasted no time in sacking Jon Ortega, whose record of 9 points out of a possible 27 was considered unacceptable. So, 61 year old Joaquin Mas, who had previously managed Cacereno,

Alguena and his home town of Crevillente, was now tasked with lifting his new club up the table. Due to the annual resurfacing of Moi Gomez stadium pitch, this home match (plus the next 3 or 4) was played at the nearby campo cesped artificial. It took less than 2 mins for Gabri to force local keeper Sergio into a spectacular diving save, then from the rebound, he produced another important stop. Shortly afterwards, Victor's long range effort was tipped around the post by his ex colleague Miki. From the resulting corner, Nino headed agonizingly wide, then from the next attack, Rafa tested Miki with a powerful drive. Sergio rode his luck on 25 mins, for he looked to have brought down May in the box, but luckily for the hosts, the ref was not impressed. May was again in the thick of the action on 35 mins, his free kick near the touchline bringing out the best of keeper Sergio. Although Lloyd shot just wide on 40 mins, half time was greeted with a goal less scoreline. Thader meant business in the new half, both Dani and Lloyd coming close to breaking the deadlock in the opening 10 mins. Back came the visitors, first May shot wide, before Gabri tested Sergio, although Edu should have done better with the rebound. A well worked move on 57 mins, resulted in Borja slamming home not only the games opening goal, but his first ever for Thader. It didn't take long for parity to be restored, courtesy of a defensive mix up allowing May to accept an offer of shooting into an open goal.

Worse was to follow, in the form of a 2nd yellow card for the industrious Calderon on the hour mark. This was no surprise, for up till then, 5 Thader players were walking the tightrope of having received bookings. Redovan made good use of having an extra man, but it took 2 calamitous errors by Sergio to gift them the points. The first occurred on 84 mins, when a medium paced daisy cutter beat the custodian at this near post, only for sub Rulo to try his luck some 3 mins later. This time Sergio, in his
