Getting to know the Spanish Traffic Laws
U
nderstanding Spanish Traffic Law has taken a huge leap forward today, with the publication of a new eBook by the N332 Road Safety Group. A team of volunteers have been working on the publication for over a year, translating the official law into English, overseen by Guardia Civil traffic officer, Francisco Morales, who has also added commentary and pictures to the publication to ensure that there is no ambiguity in understanding every single element. Today, the eBook is officially launched to a VIP group in the Quironsalud Hospital in Torrevieja, where the attendees will be presented with a talk about the history and reasoning behind the publication, and
a preview of some of the pages. The publication has already gained the support from three of the main traffic accident associations in Spain, Stop Accidentes, Association for the Prevention of Traffic Accidents (P(A)T), and the FederaciĂłn Europea de VĂctimas de la Carretera, as well as the European Concil on Road Safety keen to support the entire project. With just over 500 pages of text and pictures, the publication, which has been edited by Mark Nolan, who has also been involved in the project since the beginning, some 3 years ago, will be available to download later this week from the N332 website, at n332.es/ebooks. The Reglamento General De CirculaciĂłn, which is the document which has been translated, is one of four main legal documents for driving in Spain, and the most important, as it details the basics, and intricate elements of procedures ranging from drugs and alcohol to children in cars, which includes many of the points that drivers are still confused about, such as who can sit where, how goods are to be carried and stowed, which lane to drive in, who has priority and when, and what the road signs and signals actually mean.
blue lights, taxis having blue number plates, and the introduction of eco stickers. In the first half of 2019 we expect to see other changes such as the regulation of personal mobility vehicles, such as scooters, and stricter controls for speed, and so, with such a frequently changing canvas, the need for ease of updates is crucial in ensuring that the information is always up to date and accurate.
The good news is that thanks to the support from the volunteers and sponsors, this eBook can be downloaded for free, and so you can have your own copy on your mobile phone, tablet, or computer, and can then either read it from cover to cover, or simply refer to it if you have any doubts. There will also be a supporting website launched in the next few weeks, followed by a mobile phone app, as the development in this part of the project continues. Although there may be some disappointment that the publication isn’t being printed, the size alone would make it extremely expensive, but being a digital publication means that it can be updated easily, without having to throw away the original paper copy. Moreover, the website means that these updates can be published instantly. In the second half of this year we have seen changes to the law such as all emergency service vehicles having

Guardamar Beaches a sea of plastic A ccording to Friends of the Wetlands of South Alicante, the sandy beaches next to the mouth of the Rio Segura contain up to 3,000 pieces of plastic per square metre, which have been accumulating for over a decade, while the Consell, CHS and municipalities have "looked the other way." Lots of bright colors, thousands of different shapes, like the sand itself. A layer of micro plastics stretching along the beach, now part of the daily landscape of our coastline and a reflection of the end of the throwaway journey that contains our supermarket lives. In one simple search you can find 3,200 fragments in a single square metre. Just by counting the micro fragments, stoppers, straws, parts of bags, bottles, a multitude of objects, all made of plastic. A lot of the plastic waste is found on the beach of Els Tossals, just north of the mouth of the Segura
River, onto which tons of such waste and packaging remains arrive every year. Not only does it disfigure the landscape, the plastic also affects the trophic chain, the feeding and nutrition, of fish and birds in the sea and on the beach. They waste flows through the old channel, through the hazards of the traditional irrigation system despite the retention barrier which runs in parallel when the river floods, as it did a few days ago. The erosion of the sea turns the water or soft drinks bottles into this multi-coloured mosaic that infiltrates this unique, wild beach, habitat of many vulnerable species, and which become isolated between the sea, the pine forest and the dunes. Sergio Arroyo, spokesman for Friends of the Wetlands of the South of Alicante (AHSA), explains that the plastic tide - floating solids in administrative terminology - began about eight or nine years ago. Initially much of it was agricultu-
ral waste. "But in recent years the use of plastic has become even more widespread, especially since we stopped drinking tap water." Now it has become a landfill at the mouth of the Segura in Guardamar It is not only aesthetic environmental pollution, which is most annoying, it is also the fact that it is toxic and it can now so easily became a public health problem. “Whether that is in the long or short term, we do not know," says recalls Arroyo. In order to manufacture the containers, up to 200 additives are used. Manufacturers themselves recommend that consumers do not reuse bottles, he says. Plastic degrades and can be harmful to health. "The town councils are responsible for the collection of this waste from the areas through which the river passes, but they continue to look the other way, along with the
3
Generalitat and the Hydrographic Confederation (CHS). It is only by opening a debate on this environmental plague, and by making denunciations before the European Union's petitions committee, that we are now making these administrations begin to "move". The first reaction of the CHS was to accuse the traditional farmers, but most of this rubbish is domestic, from the Vega Baja and upstream from Orihuela and from the city of Murcia. The only way to stop this pollutant layer is to ensure that the waste does not end up in the river. Automatic grids have been used for years in other irrigation areas such as farmer’s field, and now need to be installed in the Vega Baja. But municipalities must still be legally responsible for removing the containers and plastics that trap.

of Alicante, a large area of study which delivers a program of events almost daily in the auditorium, and which is now also suspended. It also houses the headquarters and offices of the council and officials attached to the Department of Culture who were moved to this accommodation because of the closure of another municipal building, the Theatre. The mayor said he "expects" that remedial work will begin "as soon as possible in order to find an early solution that causes as little damage as possible."
'Travel to Ancient Egypt' The exhibition 'Travel to Ancient Egypt' opened on Tuesday in Pilar de la Horadada and will run right through the Cristmas holidays until Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at the Casa del Cultura in the town.
Waste transfer plant to operate for twenty years
The exhibition has been put together by Jerónimo Blanco through reproductions and restorations of Egyptian culture, among them the God Sobek, the rites of mummification, the pyramids of Gizeh, the discoveries of the tomb of Tutankhamun, and the world of Cleopatra. Meanwhile the Municipal Ethnological Archaeological Museum Gratiniano Baches in the town played host last week to 60 people from the hamlet of Nonduermas, just a few kilometres south of Murcia City. The visit was hosted by the director, María García. Among all visitors, was the pedáneo council representative Carmen Lopez, who presented a town shield to the Pilar Council.
Meanwhile in Pilar de la Horadada, the council have installed yellow and blue containers for all of their employees and visitors to recycle plastic, bottles and cans, as well as cardboard and paper. The Councillor for the Environment, Antonio Escudero said that "with these small gestures we contribute to the environment and together we collaborate in conserving the natural environment".
C.L.A.R.O. holds 13th Annual General Meeting C.L.A.R.O.s 13th Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place on 13 November. It was well attended and at an important moment, 6 months before the next municipal elections, and, for the first time, elected a female President, Helene Akerman, originally from Sweden.
Torrevieja 7% increase in recycling of glass Ecovidrio manager, Roberto Fuentes, stepped out with Councillor for the Environment, Fanny Serrano, to publicise the positive results obtained from the recycling initiative 'Take note, recycle glass' , which was launched by the non-profit organisation last year in conjunction with the Torrevieja Council. The report shows that 910 tons of glass were recycled during the summer, 7% more than in the same period last year. As a result of the increase the torrevejense municipality has obtained one the 'Green Igloo', an award presented by 'Ecovidrio' for their improvement. This is not a trivial amount according to the councillor but equates to approximately 30 kilos per inhabitant, exceeds the national ratio, and that of the Valencian Community, by about 50%.
The AGM approved a motion on political strategy which commits the party to continue to campaign actively for the priority needs of the coast, an Emergency Services Centre, a Cultural Centre with auditorium and Library, improved services, in particular street cleaning and properly maintained parks and gardens. The Save Cala Mosca campaign should remain the centre piece of CLARO’S environment policy. Given a changing and uncertain political situation, the AGM agreed a policy of wait and see before taking a decision regarding the Orihuela municipal election in May. This policy takes account of the launch of an Orihuela Costa citizen’s movement aiming to contest the coming election. This is potentially an important new factor in Orihuela Costa but at the moment it is not possible to predict its success.
The waste transfer plant that the public company Vaersa is going to build in Dolores is no longer conceived as a "transitory solution" to waste management in the region. It is now said that the plnt will have a lifespan of at least two decades and will, in future, be put to a number of different uses, such as the specialised recovery of waste. The transfer plant would function as such until the region gets its own refuse dump, something that will make it unnecessary to transfer waste to other regions. This is what emerges from the report of the technical committee that has analysed the project submitted by Vaersa. The plant is designed to receive 111,700 tons of waste per year that will later be diverted to landfills in Alicante, Xixona and Elche - the transfer facility is not a landfill. It will serve the municipalities of "Este de la Vega Baja": Algorfa, Almoradí, Benijófar, Catral, Daya Nueva, Daya Vieja, Dolores, Formentera del Segura, Guardamar, Los Montesinos, Rojales, San Fulgencio and Torrevieja.
Organ concerts at Orihuela Cathedral
For the first time, the outgoing Executive Committee was not able to present a consensus list of candidates for election to the new Executive Committee.
Torrevieja closes Cultural Centre Once again the Torrevieja Cultural Centre has been closed, this time because of the failure of the fire alarms. The decision affects hundreds of users of the municipal schools, students, performers and the offices of the Department of Culture The authorities have said that the alarm system in the building would be unable to detect a fire. That is why the City Council ordered the suspension of any activity in the building. The Cultural Centre is located in the neighborhood of La Punta, in the centre of Torrevieja and houses the municipal schools of painting and dance, as well as the headquarters in Torrevieja of the University
A series of free organ concerts will take place in the Orihuela Cathederal on Saturday evenings during the month of December, each starting at 8.30pm. The announcement was made by the Councillor for Culture, Mar Ezcurra, last week. This first cycle of concerts "aims to raise awareness of the great timbral possibilities of an instrument such as the pipe organ", said the councillor. In addition, Ezcurra added that, although it will concentrate on the Christian liturgy, "it is intended to show the audience the vast repertoire that the different composers of classical music have produced for the pipe organ as a solo instrument". Last Saturday, 1 December, the organist was Carlos Rafael Pérez, titular organist of the church of San Miguel in Murcia, on the 8th it will be the Oriolan Santiago Casanova, organist of the S.I. Cathedral and the Sanctuary of Monserrate, who will perform together with the trumpeter Roberto Rabasco, and on the 15th the canon organist of the S.I. Cathedral of Murcia, Alfonso Guillamón. The final concert will take place on December 22 with a didactic concert offered by the violin students of the Suzuki School.

Cabo Roig Front-Line Properties at risk T he Orihuela PSOE Councillor Maria Garcia has said that in March 2017 a report was received in the town hall, which warned of "an erosive phenomenon that affects the walls of the Orihuela Costa coastal cliff face, which represents a potential medium to long term risk" in which it also advised that the only solution would be the introduction of breakwater walls. It can now been seen that not only is the coastal walkway at risk through inclement weather and erosion but so are the frontline properties, many of which sit dangerously close to the edge of the rock face. Although work to shore up the cliff face was executed last year, at a cost of just over 180,000 euros, they could not prevent the damage that was caused during the recent heavy rains, although the mesh did prevent the falling rocks from invading the path. The report states that there "the existence of a structural erosion phenomenon along the entire coastline, affecting the walls of the cliff" which leaves cantilevered the upper layers, something that generates a double potential risk, the collapse of the overhangs, onto users walking below and something that, until now has not been made public, the risk to the properties that are situated above, many of which extend to the very edge of the protection zone of the Costas. In some cases the owners have taken remedial measures themselves, says the report, such as the construction of vertical support walls, “But in others we have been able to verify that the structure is extremely weak as it is only supported on calcareous (chalky) outcrops, which offer little underpinning.”
The situation is not helped, says the report, by swimming pools which are located too close to the cliff or by the garden irrigation systems in some of those properties. In fact, there are several that have water outlets that drain directly onto the cliff. The PSOE unveiled the document after a large block of stone fell onto part of the Cabo Roig walkway with the councillor asking the Department of Urbanism why they had done nothing about it in the 18 months since publication. She said the report states that "the placement of geogrids are able to reinforce the small erosive detachments, but they are not a sufficient or suitable technical solution in the face of the massive erosion that the cliff face is currently facing.” PSOE Councillor Maria Garcia spoke of a 2017 report that warned of the dangers

hilst the party of the Orihuela Costa might not be the force that it once was, CLARO is still alive and well, that is according to Helene Akerman, it’s very first female President who was elected to take the party forward two weeks ago at the 13th Annual General Meeting. But with diminishing support, and with mass resignations threatening to tear the group apart, it seems currently to be a party in turmoil and one can only wonder how much longer it will survive.
AE already provides a better cross section of support than CLARO ever enjoyed, with activists made up from local residents associations, community and trader associations, as well as school parent associations and members of the voting public from a multitude of nationalities. CLARO Board Member Bob Houliston is also an AE campaigner and, together with coordinator Iván Pérez, he has been working for some time on establishing and developing the organisation’s roots. Although the group is not allied to any political party it’s arrival onto the local scene is developed from the outrage and the abandonment felt by coastal residents at the treatment they are receiving from Orihuela’s politicians. Pérez said that the association needs the backing of 1,500 residents on the Orihuela Costa who are prepared to support them with their votes. This will allow AE to formally register their contention prior to the May Municipal elections. Although the movement was only formally launched last weekend the organisers already claim to have accrued 600 promises of votes which they will hopefully add to with a concerted campaign in the New Year. CRIME ON THE COSTA CALIDA The Civil Guard has stopped a 48 year old Spanish bus driver on two separate occasions, for driving while under the influence of drugs. The incidents occurred in October and early November in Torre Pacheco, when, on both occasions, the bus was full of passengers. He now faces a 2,000 euros fine and the loss of 12 driving license points. The Provincial Traffic Office of Murcia, will now request that the driver be submitted to an extraordinary review to determine if it continues to meet the psychophysical aptitudes to drive. Meanwhile, in San Javier the Civil Guard have detained three young people for robbery and arson in an industrial warehouse just outside the town. They have also broken up a gang of youths dedicated to robbing homes in San Pedro del Pinatar. Investigations into the San Javier incident led the Civil Guard to a house in Santiago de la Ribera-San Javier where the search revolved around a missing girl. The suspects fled across the adjacent rooftops, although they were later caught and detained in the vicinity.
Three men, aged 18, 23 and 24 years, all of Spanish nationality and residents of Santiago de la Ribera were detained in custody. Three young people, two of them minors, were also arrested in San Pedro del Pinatar, following a spate of household robberies. Following the arrest of one of the alleged thieves, traced through the analysis of fingerprints left at the scene, a number of other young people were detained, all residents of San Pedro del Pinatar, as the alleged perpetrators of the robbery. However the operation remains open, so the arrest of other members of this juvenile criminal group are not ruled out.
Inside the building, the Guardia located several young people, among them the missing girl, where they also recovered numerous objects stolen from an industrial unit in San Javier that had been robbed and set on fire.

O
nce again, the Poppy Appeal 2018 at the Iceland store in San Javier raised a record amount of â‚Ź3771 which will go towards the total raised by Orihuela Costa and District branch of the Royal British Legion for use in helping members and former members of the Armed Services, based in Spain. Diana and her team, Graham (pictured), Sandy, Patrice, Brian and Sylvia, Walter and Sue, By Diana Michael, Malcolm and Chris, Jo and Dennis, Wiltshire would like to thank all the staff and especially the customers, who donated so generously to achieve the total, which is some â‚Ź400 more than last year. Possibly this was due to the effect from commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of the first World War, but the team thinks that people were just extra generous this year and hopes that this will continue in the years to come. Perhaps people are now beginning to realise that it is not simply the families of the World War soldiers, sailors and airmen who are being helped, but also those who have, or sadly who have not returned from recent conflicts. Japanese Macaques held on Death Row in Guardamar

Given the refusal of the authorities to make any intervention, members of the Great Ape Project and Animalia Animal Protection, with the consent of the owners of the farm, transferred the macaques to another larger cage in the same farm, where at least they are better housed, but which is still insufficient for their stay in captivity.
They add that this situation in which the Japanese macaques have been, since February of this year, is extremely serious and it could easily be avoided if one of the Sanctuaries in Spain that deals with exotic species would take up their case. “At the moment,” they say, “they are on death row and their situation is the sole responsibility of the Consellería.”

Would you want to cope with organising a funeral in Spain W
hen a close friend or a family member dies, the last thing you need is the worry of complex regulations and the red-tape of a Spanish funeral. At such a difficult time could you or your family cope with organising a funeral in Spain? If not you need look no further than PF Samper, a third generation independent family funeral director, based in Pilar de la Horadada. We know that the death of a loved one is a difficult experience, one that all of us are likely to experience during our lifetime, and when mourning the loss of a friend or a family member, the very last thing you want to think about is the planning of a funeral, a fact that is considerately recognised by Francisca, a long time supporter of The Royal British Legion, who has been helping the expat community from her family run business in Pilar for over 20 years. “At PF Samper”, she says, “we aim to provide only the highest level of personal attention as we ease this process for you and your family. We will take expert care and provide due consideration to ensure that your loved one gets an appropriate and caring farewell, whilst making the funeral planning process is as painless as possible”. “We will arrange a dedicated funeral service that will provide you and your family with full value, without compromise, a service that is designed to show respect, whilst still maintaining the dignity,
the values and traditions so cherished by those who we serve”.
Francisca has been providing a dignified service to the expat community for over 20 years
“We will also ensure that every life tribute is distinctive, personal and affordable, in honouring to the full a life that has been lived”. In ensuring a 24 hour service, throughout the entire province of Alicante and North Western Murcia, PF Samper can be providing you with that care and support within an extremely short space of time. Francisca will immediately respond to your call and while you are able to grieve with dignity she will quickly take charge of all the initial arrangements. “If you have a previously organised funeral plan we will closely liaise with your provider but if you are without such an agreement we will make all the initial arrangements for you, and unlike many similar companies here in Spain we will not demand any payment in advance”. The body of the deceased will be prepared to lie in repose in our own private chapel, as detailed arrangements, with either you or your family, can then be left to a more appropriate time. One aspect that Francisca does warn of are the varying conditions applied by different funeral directors and Tanatorias. “Whichever company you use you must always make sure that you are completely satisfied with the costs and the arrangements, and if in any doubt do not sign any papers”.

Ultimately, of course, it’s all about trust and peace of mind, something of which you can be assured when dealing with the multilingual Francisca or her British assistant Eric Nicholls.
Whether the service takes place the following day or a week later,, unlike many other funeral directors, there is no extra charge.
The company has its own private chapel of rest, mortuary and crematorium in Pilar de la Horadada although the service can be organised by PF Samper at any church that the family wishes across the entire province of Alicante and North Western Murcia. Ministers, flowers and transport can also be organised by PF Samper who will also take care of all necessary documentation and certificates. Likewise the arrangements can be made, regard-

Following cremation the urn will be delivered when required, and in the proper traditions of a genuinely family run business, details regarding payment can be made at a later date. Francisca says, “Our job consists of making sure that the families remember the day of the funeral as a very special occasion and that the loved one who has passed away is provided with the esteem and the respect that every person deserves. Though the life is ended we want to make sure that the memory lingers on”.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.
He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

I sometimes write about both homelessness and food aid in the Canary Islands, which surprises some and annoys those who believe that I should somehow focus my time upon extolling the virtues and beauty of these wonderful islands, and act as an unofficial holiday promoter. Since I do not work for the tourism industry or am responsible to the island government, I feel that my time is better spent opening the eyes of those who have been seduced by the island dream to what is really going on behind those glossy brochures and slick television advertisements. Yes, these are wonderful islands to visit, live, work and play, but the unemployment situation is horrendous, particularly for young people, and the lack of affordable housing is at crisis levels, so that we have many residents who are either homeless or relying on food banks to survive. Despite those glossy brochures and ‘all you can eat and drink’ hotel deals in this ‘alternative island universe’, this is not the reality that many people face each day of their lives. The Canary Islands are not alone in this shame. Poorly publicised statistics show that between 2013 and 2017, around 230 homeless people died on the streets of Britain. Between 2017 and 2018, 440

Most Disadvantaged, which is the second of three payments to the Spanish Red Cross and the Spanish Federation of Food Banks in the Canary Islands. The European Aid Fund is jointly funded by the European Union and the Spanish Government and is intended to promote social cohesion, to reinforce inclusion and to contribute to the goal of eradicating poverty. Food aid is given to various institutions to distribute to the population according to different categories, such as those with low incomes, mothers with new babies, unemployed people, as well as those identified as being within the poverty index. In the Canary Islands, the money allocated to the purchase of food amounts to almost 5,300,000 euros divided into three periods throughout the year.
Poverty in the Canary Islands As we prepare for the Christmas festivities, maybe an article about poverty is not what many will expect, but maybe it is the most important time to discuss a subject that we are all aware of, but feel helpless to do anything about. At least in the Canary Islands, we can offer a little good news that should have a positive impact upon many people in need.

people have died, which is almost twice as many in a quarter of the time. How any society can allow this to happen, and how any government can rest easy with these appalling statistics, I do not know. The good news is that in Gran Canaria, the city of Las Palmas has recently created the first day centre for homeless people with an investment of around 700,000 euros from the Canary Islands Development Fund. This building will be accessible for all as it will have an elevator, stairs and bathrooms especially adapted for people with reduced mobility. This refurbishment project began in 2017 with the first phase of demolition of the interior. It is hoped that this new facility will open in February 2019, and will be the first day centre for homeless people in the Canary Islands. The day centre will provide a reception area, medical and administrative offices, training rooms, a hairdressing salon, toilets, and bathrooms adapted for people with reduced mobility, as well as an outdoor area that will be used as a rest area. The first floor will provide a kitchen, a dining room with capacity for 60 people, luggage storage, restrooms and showers for residents, a locker room for staff, offices, a warehouse and a cleaning room. The third floor, which is currently under construction, will see the creation of 34 residential spaces, so that homeless people can spend the night in the new centre. In another welcome move, the Government of the Canary Islands has received 1,787,000 euros from the European Aid Fund for the
The ‘food basket’ contains about fourteen products, such as white rice, cooked beans, UHT milk, olive oil, canned tuna, pasta, tinned tomatoes, biscuits, canned green beans, canned fruit in light syrup, powdered chocolate, infant bottles of fruit and chicken, infant cereals and milk powder. During the early days of the recession, politicians in both Spain and the UK were fond of using placatory phrases, such as “We are all in it together”. Clearly, we are not and never will be. These islands have the potential to be of enormous benefit to all its citizens, and not just the mega hotels and businesses that are often based in other countries and have very little positive impact upon the local economy. It is with this in mind that I read with interest a recent report from the Government of the Canary Islands that the new tourism strategy for the islands between now and 2025 will contain a commitment to the whole of society, and with the aim of increasing the quality of life for all. Let us hope that this really will be the case, and not just empty words. A
full house enjoyed a glass of wine, a huge raffle and music from the Torrevieja Pipes and Drum band for this last meeting of 2018. The Mayor had to join the meeting late after having been called to an unexpected meeting with the Presidente of Valencia but did manage to give the meeting an update on the long standing issue of La Siesta park. It seems there is still no opening in sight as the mayor revealed previous suppliers were suing the council for non payment and until the court case was resolved nothing could happen.
There was an update on the planned new contracts for waste services and the bus service with members invited to attend a council meeting. Residents were told about the registration process for voting next year and advised to ensure they have residency and transfer of UK driving licences before brexit. The mayor, director of parks and local police will meet with NHW Chair Doug Allen and members to inspect the area this week to resolve residents issues and to identify what of the area improvement plan can be completed.
International choir, CORO PILAR are pleased to invite you to join them for their Christmas Concert, on Saturday 15th December at 19:00 at Capilla de Santa Maria del Mar (La Zenia Church), Calle Elcano Zen (Just off the N332). The concert will feature the exceptional soloists AMBER KAY (soprano) and JESUS HERMANDEZ (tenor) and the choir is brilliantly led by their Musical Director ZINOVIY HARVAT and the very talented PHILIP MITCHELL will accompany on the piano, as well as acting as Compère. Come along to get into the festive spirit and join in with some familiar Carols. Tickets are 10₏ and are available from La Ponderosa - The Ecumenical Temple - or on the door on the night.
Coro Pilar wishes you all a very Merry Christmas and would like to thank you for your continued support. Looking forward to seeing you at the concert.

The Panthers then narrowed the gap taking two out of the three pairs as Panthers MOTM Michelle stunned the room taking out a classy 3 dart finish on 59 despite, Kevin for the Fire Station hitting the best score of the night with 138. So, at the break it was 4-2 to the home team. Suddenly the match was much tighter. Two of the singles games turned into marathons. Paul and Angela both took it in turns to miss their doubles with Paul scoring in the wrong bed (not for the first time some said!) before Angela got her D7 at last for the visitors. In the six singles, all games came down to the double and in fairness the Angels were at times sweating slightly as the Queens were firing at the double. Sadly, for the royal ladies, they did not claim a single point in the singles but went home happy enough with 2 points .... Marie & Phil were named players of the match.

On this occasion Vistabella won all the points to remain top of the league. VB 122(12) - 46(0) LS. WINTER LEAGUE. El Rancho Bowls Club The Palominos played their postponed match at home to San Luis Luis Romulans. A good result in taking 10 points. Vulcans, sharing the rinks at two and a draw each and took the overall shots 84-72. A good result all round. Monday morning found the Pintos at Greenlands playing the Maples on a particularly windy day. It was a tough match for the Pintos, coming away with one rink and losing another by just the one shot, but it was worth the challenge. The Raiders entertained San Luis Vulcans in a tough game, though taking just the one rink, two others were close, so not a bad day. In the afternoon the Palominos entertained San Luis Romulans and put on a great show in taking 4 rinks and the shots, which include a ‘hotshot’ for Tony Abbott, Debbie Ham and David Wright, well done! Wednesday brought another re-arranged match, Raiders away at San
A windy and tricky Friday morning found the Mustangs playing host to league leaders Vistabella Lanzadores and took full advantage of the home mat. The Mustangs took the rinks by 4 to 1 and the overall shots by 109 to 64, a good for the home team. Meanwhile the Broncos were playing the Toreadors at Montemar and found the opposition just a little too strong, taking just the one rink, though losing another by just 2 shots. Also the Rangers were at Country Bowls playing the Cubs and conceded one rink, of the others they took one and lost another by just 2 shots. For info contact Sheila Cox at micksheilacox@gmail.com or Brian Taylor on 965 40 77093 or at elranchobowlsclub@gmail.com
Country Bowls Club The Flamingos hosted the San Miguel Pointers on a very windy and trying Monday morning. Patience, luck and the ability to correct were the order of the day and the Pointers showed us they had all this in abundance. We managed one win and one draw giving us three points to the Pointers nine. Winning rink; Dennis Wade, Derek Jiggins and Geoff Paylor on rink 2, 19 – 15. The draw Pat Patton, Les Turner and Phil Warrington rink 5, 16 -16. Well done to the Pointers. On Friday morning Country Bowls Cubs played against El Rancho Rangers in their first home game for a good while. The Cubs stepped out after a team/rink reshuffle with many players playing for the first time in their respective rinks. It was neck and neck at half time and a late surge from Derek Lewis, Sandra McIlroy and Lynne Bryce saw them move to within a point with one end to play. A three secured them a win. Sheena Mallet, Dot Davies and Peter Robins had a strong win as did Chris Stevens, Craig Dyson and Andrew Bryce.
Horadada Bowls Club by Irene Graham Three matches to report on this week and I have a rather larger than usual smile on my face. On Monday in the Discovery division we were at home to La Marina Pathfinders. Four of the rinks cancelled each other out, so the decider (if you like) was left up to the 5th rink. This shows how close a match it was. The final score was 4 points to Horadada and 8 to La marina. The overall shots just going to La Marina by 1 shot. 84 for 85 against. So close but not quite. Our winning rinks were: Margaret Odell, Ron Odell and Bryan Eatough 19 – 8 Irene Graham, Wayne Jackson and Roy Thomson 31 – 6 Tuesday was a rescheduled Monday match again at home, to
by Jo Richardson
Overall score was 8 – 2 with the shots going to Country Bowls resulting in a 10 – 2 win. Well done to the Cubs. The Country Bowls second game of the day saw the Geckos arrive at the club for their afternoon match just in time to see their fellow team mates, the Cubs, win their morning match. This spurred everyone on to push for a good win against a very experienced La Manga Crusaders team. The whole team played excellent bowls and came away with the best result of the season for the Geckos winning 12 – 0 and with a shot difference of 115 – 65 . Well done Country Bowls Geckos! What a fantastic result with both teams romping home with terrific wins. Onwards and upwards. For info please visit www.countrybowlsmurcia.com or check Facebook Country Bowls Club, e-mail grahamandjo7@gmail.com tel 966 19 1552 Montemar Torreadors. Once more this proved to be a very close match with each side winning two rinks and a draw. The overall shots came to Horadada being 98 for and 74 against. This is a great result for us, gaining 7 points to 5 against. At time of writing hopefully moving us up out of relegation. Our winning rinks/draw were: Margaret Odell, Ron Odell, Bryan Eatough 19 – 11 Jan Jukes, Mark Dukes and Barry Evans 26 – 8 Peter Davis, Les Davies and Terry Hucknall 16 -16 Friday in the Southern League we were at home to Quesada Swans and the fact that I am Scottish and it was St Andrews Day made my Super Friday. On this occasion it really was a close match. Rinks winning or losing by 1 shot. At the end of the day Team Horadada came out on top. Winning on 4 rinks and losing by 1 shot on 5th

In the Enterprise Division Quesada Diamonds rescheduled match against San Luis Klingons resulted in a San Luis win of 9 points to 3 and 99-74 shots. And unfortunately on a very cold and windy morning The Diamonds struggled a bit in this weeks match which resulted in another defeat, this time to San Luis Trekkers, who won the match 10-2 points and the shots were 88-72. The Pearls however, had an extremely close game against San Luis Trekkers for their rescheduled match - the score was 6 points each and with a nail biting finish on the last end, San Luis won the shots 81-80 points. And they drew again in another very close match on Monday against San Luis Klingons - 6 points each but this time San Luis won the shots 101 to 91. While in Division B, Quesada Swifts played MonteMar Matadors. A close match resulted in a Quesada win of 7 points to 5 and 99 shots to 90, and was enough to keep them in second place in the league only 5 points behind the leader Mazarron Miners. Unfortunately the Swans playing away, came up against the Horadada Royals playing at their best. Horadada won the game 2 points to 10 and 78100 points. In the Winter league on Wednesday, Quesada had a resounding win against MonteMar. The match ended 12 -0 points and shots were 96 to Quesada and 69 to MonteMar. Its now extremely tight at the top of the table with Quesada only 4 points behind the leaders, Javea and a game in hand against San Miguel who are currently in 2nd place. And finally after a very busy week, in the first round of the Premier 20 Knockout Competition, Quesada won their match against Vistabella 10 points to 6 and 130 shots to 119. This puts them straight into the semi-finals against El CID. Just a reminder that our Saturday morning chicken drive is open to visitors. La Siesta Bowls Club by Rod Edgerton In the Enterprise Division the Apollos entertained Vistabella Albatrosses and had a convincing 103 - 57 victory winning on all rinks thereby picking up 12 points. Good victories for Trish and Pat Reilly with George Richardson 28-8 and Ramsay Sinclair, John Taylor and Alex Morrice 23-4 were highlights in this result. The Voyager Division saw the Sputniks travel to Vistabella Buggies to play the league leaders and Vistabella proved too strong picking up all 12 points. The Sputniks bounced back to form on Thursday beating Greenlands Chestnuts 7-5 on their own rinks. The victory came from 87 shots to 79 with two rinks winning and another drawing. Hilary Clarke, Rod Edgerton and Alan Ralph won 25-7 whilst Ann Edgerton, Ken Stringfellow and John Clarke won 20-19. The Pioneers also played the Chestnuts at home and won 110 shots to 74 picking up 10 points. Best winners for La Siesta came from Doug and Fay Beattie with Norman Adcroft 32-11 and Barbara Cooper, Tony Campbell and Dave Laverick winning 23-14. Our Winter League team entertained Monte Mar and the match finished with the spoils being shared each team picking up 6 points. Thanks to a convincing win from Barbara Cooper, Val Dalton with Mike and Florence Edwards 25-15 La Siesta managed an overall shots score of 94-87. The other winners were Irene and Dave Laverick with Tony Campbell and Jean Cooper 18-15. La Siesta also travelled to Vistabella and unfortunately did not win on any rinks thereby picking up no points. In the Southern League A Division the Blues entertained San Luis Tigers and won on 3 rinks but the overall shots difference was 74 each so La Siesta picked up 7 points with the best winning rinks being Ann and Robert Heath with Jenny Bowman and Dawn and John Taylor with George Richardson both winning by 6 shot margins. The Golds in Division B travelled to Mazarron Miners and lost by 106 shots to 68 winning on the rink of Jo Elkin, Tony Dalton and Vic Mahomet by 19-8 whilst Derek Smith with Bill and Sue Jordan drew 23 shots apiece thereby getting 3 points to the Miners 9. The Silvers in the C Division went to Emerald Isle Outlaws and lost by 109 shots to 64 and won on the rink of Noel and Cath Morrisoe with Sheila Millward picking up 2 points for La Siesta.

San Miguel Golf Society El Valle 28th November After cancelling last week’s gathering at La Torre due to the state of that course after the heavy rain of the previous weekend, a good turnout saw 36 members and 8 guests make their way to the Murcian Nicklaus Trail track of El Valle. And how many of them wished they hadn’t come by day’s end!! The weather was marvellous, the course not set up too long and in good condition, and whilst pin positions were often hidden behind protective bunkers (hard to avoid at this course) they could have been more difficult. So how to explain the generally poor scoring? Only 9 members managed to make 30 points or more (with 15 making 25 or less), Robin Eastman coming top of the pile with 37.

LEADER Alistair finally triumphs @ El Plantio ADVERTISING HOTLINE
Unfortunately two of those who did manage it in Silver division, and where they would have taken the top prizes, were disqualified for signing for incorrect cards.
After several months of finishing in second place in El Plantio 2's Monthly Medal, Alistair Douglas finally managed to reap the benefits of his consistency by winning, albeit only by 0.2 of a shot in a close run contest.
A real pity, but good that the society makes every effort to follow the correct rules of golf. Speaking of which, all those playing were given a copy of a rather neat rules handbook including the changes coming in to effect in January 2019. A lot of reading (and learning) to be done!!

Lo Crispin Golf Society This was a 4Person Texas Scramble at Las Ramblas on 28th. Nov. Given the obvious difficulties associated with playing the Course, a Texas Scramble is a sensible way of playing it. Besides many members enjoy team games! The course was in good condition and the greens were fast and true. The weather was also good, with very little wind. Eight teams took part, which included 3 guests. After the game we returned to the Lo Crispin Tavern for the presentations. The victorious team was comprised of : Ray Moles an adopted Aberdonian (having lived there for many years, and still does,

I think that it is no real secret that neither really liked each other at that time and their attempts at being paired together in the Ryder Cup when ranked 1 and 2 in the world were a disaster. Only last week Mickelsen, fresh from making a fool of himself at the US Open and then criticising the Paris Ryder Cup course for being unfair and giving too much advantage to the the home team, played probably the second best golfer ever to live (after Jack Nicklaus) but a shadow of his former self after health and personal problems in a winner takes $9 million match with $200,000 for nearest the pins and $400,000 side bet's. Is it just me that thinks that this is obscene and making a mockery of the traditions of the game of golf and almost bringing the game into disrupute. Now neither will ever be short of food on the table again but we have a world with homeless sleeping rough and people in work such as nurses still having to use food banks and these two mega millionaires play for circa €10 million. Both have gone down in my estimation and should be ashamed of themselves. orry entered the match at San Vicente Sports Centre against Independent Alicante, the former Segunda side Alicante CF, fresh on the back of 3 consecutive defeats, the most recent of which was the rearranged fixture away at Intercity San Juan, last Wednesday evening. Although they created good chances, the Salineros once again struggled to put the ball in the net, whilst conceding 4 at the other end. This reversal left Torry languishing down in second to bottom place, whereas Independent are riding high up there in 3rd position, albeit, prior to Wednesdays 1-0 success against Villena, with five consecutive draws. For CD Torrevieja, Argentinean Tomy Martinez has arrived to bolster the defence, but still no sign of the promised, and desperately needed, goal scorer. Tomy went straight into the side at No 4 while Revi replaced the disappointing Omar up front. The game itself was certainly an eventful affair with the visitors reduced to 10 midway through the opening period after Juanmi was dismissed for an off the ball incident. Up to that stage there had been little difference in the two sides with both creating decent chances. For the remainder of the half Juanpe was the busier of the two keepers saving well from the effervescent Conesa when he was through
Indep CF Alicante ..........3
As the half came to a close we all thought that parity was about to be restored after a foul on Revi but when the referee pulled out a yellow for Borja’s x-rated challenge it seemed as though the balance was shifting even more toward the home side.
As the 2nd period got underway it was the Alicante debutante Dani who was making all the running for CF Alicante bringing two fine saves from Juanpe in the opening minutes. Indeed all the pressure was coming from the home side with Torry unable to get out of their own half.
CD Torrevieja ...............1
Toti headed over while Adris went close on two occasions before a Conesa shot rebounded off the crossbar to the feet of striker Abdul who won’t score an easier goal all season. However, as so often happens in football, no sooner had Alicante gone in front than the scores were back to level, very much, however, against the run of play, when Revi volleyed home following a rare Torry attack. As the game entered it’s final minutes Sergi brought off another fine save from Juanpe but the spinning ball was deflected into the path of Dani who turned it over the line from close range to restore the Alicante lead. Moments later the score was 3-1 to the home side after Ruben Conesa ran the length of the field to fire home past the unlucky Juanpe, but for whom the margin of the Torry defeat would have been much greater. Then, with the final act of the game, another off the ball incident saw the referee dismiss Torry defender Iñaki, a completely unnecessary foul which will mean a 3 match suspension. With Juanmi also suffering a similar fate this will mean the loss of two key players at a time when the club’s survival is undoubtedly in the balance.

Report and photo by Andrew Atkinson Members of Lancashire cycling clubs, the Preston Wheelers and North Lancs, Blackburn and Hyndburn, are in Spain following in the tracks of the Vuelta. The UK cyclists, based in Guardamar, stopped off in Los Montesinos, Alicante, to take in liquid refreshments in the hot temperatures that returned to the Vega Baja after recent severe storms. Top cycling teams in Spain competed in the 13th edition of the Vuelta Civilista of Alicante province Gran Premio Costa Blanca earlier this year.
The first stage got underway in May, with 18 teams, three being international, competing over three stages. San Fulgencio, Rojales, Formentera del Segura, Almoradi, Dolores, Catral, San Isidro, Granja de Rocamara, Cox, Callosa de Segura, Rafal and Orihuela towns saw streets filled with enthusiastic support during Vuelta.

EL RASO GOLF SOCIETY For the first time in quite a while we held our monthly Stableford competition at Font del Llop. It is a rather challenging course which on the day, with high winds and fast greens, proved even more testing. However, some good scores came in. There are five par threes on this course and the nearest the pins went to hole 3 Alan Caithness, hole 8 Robin Richards, hole 12 Carin Van de Kruijs, hole 16 Bev Fairhurst and hole 17 Alan Caithness. The best front nine with a score of 17 was Alan Caithness, while the back nine was won by David Horne with a score of 18. In third place was Ged McWilliams with 33 pts, second place

Carp R Us Winter Series CARP-R-US started their Winter Series with the long, but usually worthwhile, trip to the Embalse de Argos. This was the first really cold morning of the winter with temperatures around five degrees at the time of the draw, however, most weights were good. The match was won by Alan Smith with 28.05kg caught using a combination of pole and feeder. Second was Terry Screen with 26.70kg and third was Tom Marshall with 13.10kg. Alan, Terry and Tom were fishing the sunny side of the peninsular, so it was good to see Graham Ledley finish with 12.00kg from the colder, shaded side. Further information about the club can be found on its website www.carp-r-us.weebly.comor on our Facebook page Carp-R-Us Fishing Costa Blanca.
