TORREVIEJA CIVIL PROTECTION WALK OUT ‘EN MASSE’
Torrevieja Civil Protection suspends all services The Civil Protection organisation in Torrevieja has suspended all of the security and support services assigned to them,
handing them over to the Civil Guard and Local Police. The actions have been brought about following the imposition of a paid municipal councillor to manage the voluntary public
service. The head of the organisation, Enrique Pizana and his deputy Estela Prieto have announced that they too have resigned from their positions along with
100% of the volunteers, in total 41 individuals, one of the largest groups in the Valencian Community. Continued on Page 02

According to a statement signed by Pizana and Prieto the reasons for adopting this decision "are the lack of sensitivity that has been shown by the Torrevieja council in the appointment of a paid councillor to manage the organisation without any prior consultation or notification. Prieto said "we do not deserve this kind of imposition which had brought about the resignation of every single member of one of the largest and best prepared and trained volunteer organisations in the Community.

We have accumulated hundreds of hours of valuable emergency training that can no longer be used for and by the people of Torrevieja. We all leave the organisation with sad hearts but with our heads held high and our work well done. "

Meanwhile the former chief, Enrique Pizana, said that "we suspend all the services we had assigned , asking for understanding from the local police and the civil guard, who we will not be able to accompany at any future services, events or emergencies.

This group and I say goodbye with our heads held high and wishing good luck to all who follow us". According to the same press release the group is left without any members whatsoever after a decision was made "in block by all staff and volunteers." Therefore, in the opinion of Pizana and Prieto, the best organised body of Civil Protection volunteers in the history of the city has been brought to an end. Many pundits wonder if the decision to disband the local corps is as a result of political motives in that Prieto is closely linked to the local PSOE. Originally nominated as a socialist candidate in the recent municipal elections he resigned his position as a result of the deep internal division in the party ranks. Meanwhile the fact that the head of Civil Protection is remunerated has always been a "tradition" of the Popular Party, however the government is yet to announce just who the individual was going to be although in the most recent plenary it was announced that he or she would receive an annual salary of 19,000 euros.
Earthquake with magnitude of 3.2 epicentre Los Montesinos By Andrew Atkinson Los Montesinos, Alicante, was hit by an earthquake of 3.2 on the Richter scale on Saturday evening that led to hundreds of people within the Vega Baja area turning to social media. The earthquake at 23.13 shook houses in Los Montesinos, Algorfa, San Miguel and surrounding towns - it being the second 'quake to hit the area in recent days. Many worried residents affected contacted me asking if any damage was caused by the tremor. Hundreds of people were enjoying an evening in Los Montesinos town when the tremor began - that lasted a few seconds. The 3.2 earthquake epicentre was west of Los Montesinos. The depth of the epicenter was four kilometers, according to information from the National Geographic Institute. I reported just this week the shocking 6.6 Richter scale earthquake on March 21, 1829, in Torrevieja. A warning that a Tsunami could occur was made by natural disasters expert Ignacio Aguirre, at a conference in Cantabria. "Faced with the brutal devastating capacity of Tsunamis, there must be preparation strategies, before they occur. We must have a knowledge of the real risk that exists," he warned. A Tsunami warning centre, the National Geographic Institute, Spain, issues alerts to the General Directorate of Civil Protection and Emergencies. An early warning system of the Indian Ocean, Caribbean Ocean and Atlantic Northwest and Mediterranean Ocean, was formed - a system in
place, which includes Spain. In 1829 the 6.6 Richter scale magnitude earthquake in Torrevieja also affected Guardamar and Almoradi. 386 people died and 375 were left injured. The earthquake was felt in Los Montesinos, Rojales, Torrevieja, Orihuela-Costa, San Fulgencio, Daya Nueva, and Entre Naranjos. Seismic activity of a small intensity is very frequent in the region where hundreds of microterremotos occur every year, most imperceptible. It is very difficult for an earthquake of less than 2 degrees of magnitude to be felt, something that, however, does occur in the Vega Baja, where the population is especially sensitive to this natural phenomenon.

TSUNAMI WARNING! Although Tsunamis have a very low probability of occurring, areas threatened most are in the south of Spain
By Andrew Atkinson Remembrance of the shocking 6.6 Richter scale earthquake on March 21, 1829, in Torrevieja - that also hit Guardamar and Almoradi leaving 386 people dead - is an indelible memory etched within Spain. Now a warning has been flagged up that a Tsunami could occur made by natural disasters expert Ignacio Aguirre, at a conference in Cantabria.
Monday 15th - Sunday 21st July, 2019 “Knowledge is very important. There are two fundamental strategies in the case of Tsunamis," said Ignacio Aguirre, researcher from the Cantabria Institute of Environmental Hydraulics. 1. The planning of the evacuation prior to its occurrence, which requires risk analysis and mapping. 2. Early warning systems, with protocols, ensuring the information of these alerts reaches the population. Southern Spain and the eastern Mediterranean - Balearics - regularly have seismic activity, although relatively low Richter scale readings. Natural disasters occurred in 1755, 1969 and 2003, the latter in the Balearic Islands. An earthquake measuring 8.5 on the Richter scale hit Portugal, in 1755, setting off Tsunamis in 12 countries, with 50,000 fatalities. A tsunami warning centre, the National Geographic Institute, Spain, issues alerts to the General Directorate of Civil Protection and Emergencies. In 2004 a Tsunami hit Indonesia, leading to working groups being established.
"Faced with the brutal devastating capacity of Tsunamis, there must be preparation strategies, before they occur.
An early warning system of the Indian Ocean, Caribbean Ocean and Atlantic Northwest and Mediterranean Ocean, was formed.
"We must have a knowledge of the real risk that exists. We must map the areas at most risk - and instruct those in power and society in general - so that they are aware, and can save lives.
A system in place, which includes Spain: "Luckily, the Tsunamis have a very low probability of occurring - but - unfortunately, we do not put the necessary attention in the areas that are threatened most, such as the south of Spain," said Ignacio Aguirre.
Almoradi remembering the people who died in the 1829 earthquake, asking that San Emigdio, the patron saint of quakes, protects the region.
In 1829 the 6.6 Richter scale magnitude earthquake in Torrevieja saw houses, with no foundations, and poorly supported wooden beams, demolished. Guardamar Town had to be re-designed. The town that suffered most was Almoradi. In total 2,965 houses were destroyed and 2,396 houses were left unsafe, in the tragic earthquake. 386 people died and 375 were left injured.
A Memorial service is held annually in Almoradi, with inhabitants accompanying San Emigdio - the Patron Saint for earthquakes - to pray, in the everlasting memory of the victims. A 3.6 magnitude earthquake in August, 2008, occurred within the Vega Baja that led to taking San Emigdio out onto the streets. San Emigdio was accompanied by thousands of people from within the region.

First task as new councils get down to work - An increase in their salaries of course! over 10% of the new administrations the salaries of the mayors have been increased by 60%. So much for the economic crisis, particularly if you are a politician in the Vega Baja. Guardamar del Segura is where there has been the largest increase in the salaries of councillors. The mayor, José Luis Sáez (PSOE), has given his full time councillors a pay rise 63% which sees their annual go from 27,000 gross euros per year to 44,000 euros. The mayor himself will only receive 26% more over the next four years, 48,000 euros a year, 10,000 more than in the last mandate that began in 2015. There is a similar story in Pilar de la Horadada where the PSOE has denounced the salaries of the government team which will add 425,000 euros per year to the government wage bill. The PP has an absolute majority of course so it alone has approved the remuneration of 3,700 euros per month for the mayor, José María Pérez, 3,200 for the three full-time councillors and six partial salaries of 2,571 euros per month each. Councillors in opposition, meanwhile, will receive just 500 euros per month which the PSOE claims will establish two categories of councillors, those in 'business class' and the rest who will spend the next 4 years in 'tourist class.'
Algorfa PSOE mayor Manuel Ros has been quite frugal, only awarding himself a 9% pay rise. In a municipality with less than 3,000 residents he will now earn 39,000 pa A little more than a month since the formation of many municipal governments across the region following the elections of May 26 and the post-election pacts, and the most important decisions have now been made, the areas of responsibility of councillors and the salaries that they will receive and in all cases they have been increased. Of course the rises vary enormously across the municipalities but in
In Algorfa, a municipality with less than 3,000 inhabitants, the socialist Manuel Ros will pay himself 39,000 euros gross per year (it was 35,000 in 2011), while councillors serving in the government will receive 28,000 for a full time position, 21,000 euros for the two councillors who will work for 75% of the day and 12,000 for the councillor who will work part time. In Catral, a municipality of 8,600 residents, the salaries of politicians have also invited criticism. Both the mayor, Inma Úbeda (PSOE), and the first deputy mayor, his partner in government, Juan José Vicente, will each receive 35,000 euros a year, 5,000 more than last term, a mouth-watering increase of 15%. The two politicians will change roles mid-term. In Rojales, the pay rises are even greater, with the socialist mayor, Antonio Pérez, deciding to raise councillors salaries by 22% and
Outcry from Muslim Community as mayor puts new Mosque on hold in Pilar The mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, José María Pérez, has suspended applications for the building of religious centres in the municipality, a decision that is said to have angered the local imam of the Islamic community, Jamal Loudy, who has been seeking permisLocal Imam, Jamal Loudy, saays there has been absolutely no consultation with the Muslim Community
sion to build a mosque for his 4,000 members for ten years. José María said that the suspension has been implemented "so that the municipality can seek a global solution in which the Muslim community and the rest of the townsfolk are able to live together." He said that he has held several meetings "with the representatives of the Muslim community in order to seek and to agree a solution among all,” the imam said that he had not been informed of the mayor’s decision. He said that he now anticipates that his followers will mobilise to achieve a solution to the situation for which they have been working for many years, although he did not expand on quite what form the mobilisation would take. He added that he also doubted the legality of the suspension from an administrative point of view. There are currently 4,000 Muslims who are resident in Pilar de la Horadada, 20% of the
those of the spokespersons of the three opposition groups (PP, Pader and Cs ) by no less than 60%. However the mayor himself will not draw a salary, surviving, he says on his income as a pensioner, which is "less than what my councillors are going to earn." The pay rises will mean that seven of his councillors will receive 2,700 gross euros per month (37,800 euros per year in 14 payments), increasing from the 2,200 they charged just over a month ago. The one additional councillor who will work 28 weekly hours will have a salary of 2,200 euros per month. The mayor justifies the increases in that "they are reasonable and fair salaries for the responsibility and work that the councillors have and while the law allows us to raise the salaries up to 3,790 euros per month we have decided on 2,700." In addition, the three opposition spokespersons will see their salaries increased by500 euros per month, going from the 700 to 1,200 for a minimum weekly dedication of 14 hours. In Redován, the opposition of Unidas Podemos has also criticised the increase in municipal salaries and the fees for assistance to collegiate bodies. In a statement they say the rise is 43%, which the government team denies. The spokesman for the PP, Adrián Ballester, said that the mayor, Nely Ruiz, will earn only 200 euros more per month (1,500 to 1,700), 23,800 gross euros a year and three part time councillors will earn 1,300 euros. In Torrevieja there was also controversy after the PP government team announced that they have awarded themselves an increase of 10% (they will charge 3,200 euros a month compared to the 3,000 in the previous mandate while the deputy mayor will earn 3,400 , 200 euros more). And in Benejúzar the deputy mayor, Rosa Ballester, will be paid a salary of 33,189 euros a year, while her partner in the PSOE government, the mayor Miguel López, will not take a salary as he is awaiting approval as a provincial deputy, from which he will earn a sum, rather more substantial. "We have actually reduced salaries by 10%," he announced. municipality’s population. They originate from Morocco, Algeria, Spain and Senegal and they have been attempting to build their own centre of worship in the town for almost a decade. However, Muslim leaders say that the Pilar government has been "dodging" the constitutional rights of the Muslim community to have its own place of worship since 2011 when the PP mayor, Fidel Ros, suddenly changed the General Plan, withdrawing investment of 160,000 euros in the centre. In recent years, between 2015 and 2019, the PSOE mayor Ignacio Ramos created a social forum in which he tried to address the problem by proposing a rented location on a local industrial estate. The councillor of Vecinos del Pilar, Francisco Albaladejo, a member of the former left-wing government team and the forum, and now a councillor in opposition, who worked to reach a solution for four years as a member of the municipal government, believes it is evident that the mayor's intention is to thwart any possibility of the Muslim community in having this religious space "Despite the fact that in the electoral campaign they were promised that the PP would solve the problem.” However, the government responded by saying that this is nonsense. However the local newspaper Diario Informacion reports that the decision translates into a municipal ban ‘sine die’ of accepting the construction of any mosque for the Muslim community, suggesting that the legal restraints would no doubt have been lifted if the proposed religious space were not a mosque.

Torrevieja arrest in 40 million euro prostitution network Conducted by Judge Daniel Barrientos, from the Court of Instruction number 4 of Torrevieja, a prostitution network wirth over 40 million euro, and active across the whole of Europe has been closed down by the National Police with assistance from Europol and Eurojust The operation began in 2016 after the dismantling of a Nigerian prostitution network which resulted in 23 detainees. The organisation was formed mainly by Finnish citizens, several of them based in Torrevieja and Marbella, from which they earned vast sums through a series of prostitution websites. El Grupo de Blanqueo of the Alicante Judicial Police was just one of the three Spanish police units that took part in the operation a macrooperation which, dating back to 2010, has also found crimes of money laundering and the trafficking of human beings for the purpose of sexual exploitation in Nordic countries across Europe.
As a result the police authorities have arrested six people, five of whom have been imprisoned. One of the arrests was made in Torrevieja, two in Marbella and the other four in Finland, Romania and Malta. In addition to the 6 arrests, 16 web sites used by the network have been closed down. Likewise, all of the organisation’s bank accounts have been frozen in Spain, Finland, Malta, Romania, Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Russia, Estonia, Sweden, Panama and the People's Republic of China, together with an embargo on six companies.

Salinas employs security to stop bathing in the pink lagoon
In Finland property to the value of 422,000 euros has been seized, while in Hong Kong more than 1,500,000 euros has been blocked in bank accounts belonging to the criminal group. The investigations carried out in Torrevieja uncovered a criminal network dedicated to the management, maintenance and publicity of women who worked as prostitutes, through a number of different international websites, but mainly in Finland and Sweden, countries where pimping is punishable, according to the Police. The head of the organization was widely known by the Finnish police and had already been arrested for similar acts.
One of many arrests across Spain
The others were known in their immediate environment as "the old Internet pimps." The investigations confirm that some of the websites had been functioning since 2005, but it was not until 2010 when the detainees could be linked to the sexual content of accounts that have now been blocked by the National Police.

A private security guard is now guarding the accesses to the Torrevieja pink lagoon, which hundreds of people visit every week, especially during the summer, many of them with the intention of bathing, now totally prohibited. The Management Company of Las Salinas de Torrevieja has hired private security to prevent visitors from gaining access to the lagoon, which is now only available to photographers on the payment of a fee, and not to bathers The measure has been adopted by the salt company because of the dangers posed by the machinery that performs the extraction of salt, and which passes very close to the area traditionally used to bathe. The watchman shows each of the people who attempt to access this natural space the new rules printed in four languages: Spanish, English, French and German. It is expected that the brochures will soon be also printed in Russian for the large number of visiNormandy. For this and his subsequent wartime service, Joe was awarded the Legion d´Honneur and made a Chevalier of the order. The award ceremony took place at the French Lycee in El Campello, with the medal presented by Colonel Xavier Toutain, the French Defence Attache from the
Embassy in Madrid. Joe was accompanied by his partner Rose Lyon and his son James. His invited guests were Bill Laverick, President of the Royal Air Forces Association, Costa Blanca and his wife Pauline. Colonel Toutain gave a short speech about the history and significance of the Order, created in 1802 by the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and followed with an account of Joe´s military service and the award of numerous campaign stars. Joe replied with a speech of thanks, in which he expressed his love of France, emphasising the warm welcome he had always received from the people of France at D-Day remembrance ceremonies, and particularly this year in Bayeux Cathedral. The medal was then pinned on to Joe who was congratulated by the numerous dignitaries present, both military and civilian, includ-
tors of this nationality who go to the pink lagoon, now known internationally following reports in National Geographic. The leaflets will also publish the sanctions to be applied by the authorities, of between 60 and 600 euros, for disobeying the new rules. The pink lagoon is still one of the main tourist attractions of Torrevieja. "They come in buses that are full, especially the Japanese," says one resident in the area. The spectacular sunsets are another attraction, which you can enjoy without entering the lagoon. The mud bath and its therapeutic benefits were the reason the Japanese architect Toyo Ito built a visitors centre on the site more than a decade ago. The project was stopped because it was located in a public area without a Costas concession - the shores of the lagoons fall under the Costas law. The building was set on fire and is now in ruins, an eyesore that the City Council has not yet addressed.

He is said to have defrauded the Social Security for 7 years of more than 34,600 euros through the collection of the retirement pension (non-contributory) of his deceased mother." The information was passed to the Guardia Civil by a citizen who reported it to the Dolores police station three months ago. At the time he simply reported his suspicions about the fraud that he thought this man was committing.
Simple Solution Offered to N-332 Congestion The Ciudadanos political group believe that they have come up with a temporary solution to solve the congestion on the N-332 in Torrevieja, by adopting a method used around the country during the busiest periods. At times of expected congestion, such as summer, Easter, Christmas, the traffic department often creates temporary lanes using cones and beacons which allows for more traffic to flow in a particular direction, temporarily increasing the number of lanes. As an example, roads leaving from major cities may see additional lanes created exiting the area at the start of a holiday period, and then lanes created inbound for the return. Ciudadanos has submitted a proposal to the national government asking that this method be adopted on the N-332 as it passes Torrevieja, thus doubling the road capacity, albeit on as temporary a basis as needed. Pilar Gómez Magan, representative of the Ciudadanos, stated that with 300,000 inhabitants in the summer, it is an obvious solution to the problem as it could very simply double the capacity of the road. Of course with the summer season already in full swing, the road is already heavily congested and quite whether the solution will be adopted in time remains to be seen, as there would still have to be a considerable risk assessment carried out as although the solution would increase capacity, it would take away a safe area as it would mean utilising the hard shoulder for the entire stretch of road.

They were joined by their 2 main sponsors, Mark Vincent from Vincent Real Estate and Clive Smith from Smart Currency Exchange. The “Camino Girls”, Joan Bennett, Karen Palmer & Heather Meston walked the 116K walk from Sarria to Santiago, which is part of the St James Pilgrimage (Camino de Campostela), as part of their “bucket wish list”. They said it was an amazing experience especially the scenery, spiritual uplifting and the comradery of other pilgrims from all countries who they met on the way. The girls said that it was not all a bed of roses – blisters, sore feet, aching legs but when asked if they would do it again they said “you bet!!” They are already planning to walk another section next year. After getting their “passport” stamped twice a day along the Way, on reaching Santiago they went to the office and received their certificates, which they say is a real honour.
The agents checked that, indeed, the mother had died in May 2011 and that her son had never informed the authorities, which would have meant that the pension would have been removed. It was found that he benefited from his mother's pension from the month after her death until March 2018, when the bank, upon seeing that her identity document had expired, requested that he provide one that was current. When this was not provided, they blocked the account. The total amount of the money defrauded amounted to 34,653 euros, equivalent to 82 months of collection. Last week, after concluding the investigations, the Civil Guard in Dolores arrested the man arrest as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against Social Security. After taking his statement, he was released with the obligation to appear in court at a later date.

La Marina Beaches closed after mystery fish bites children Three Elche beaches were closed on Friday at La Marina, El Pinet de Elche and Rebollo after a two children were bitten by a fish. The children spent the afternoon receiving medical treatment while the fish that caused the injuries has still not been identified. However all three beaches were reopened on Saturday morning with the red flag replaced by yellow while the surveillance of lifeguards and local police officers in the area has been reinforced. The first bite was recorded at 5.30 pm, by the victim a cy year old child who was paddling close to the shore. He was first attended to by the lifeguards at the El Pinet beach station, but later an ambulance was called and he was transferred to the emergency service at the General Hospital of Elche for further treatment of three deep wounds on his right foot. At first, the event was not given too much importance, with bathers assuming it to be an isolated case, so lifeguards decided not to take any further action. However, half an hour later, the fish struck again, also at the same El Pinet beach. On the second occasion the victim was a 10-year-old boy , who also came out of the sea with a bite on one foot. Like the first child, after giving him first aid, the first aid service he was transferred by ambulance to the local hospital. At this point, with two bites in half an hour, the lifeguards and the Local Police of Elche decided to close the El Pinet and two neighbouring beaches of La Marina and Les Pesqueres-El Rebollo The red flag was raised and it remained in situ for the remainder of
the afternoon and evening indicating that the sea was prohibited as a precautionary measure. Lifeguards and agents of the Local Police continued to patrol the shoreline, both in search of the fish that had caused the two bites, and the inform the people who were not aware of the situation.
The councillor for Public Safety, Ramรณn Abad, said that a decision to reopen the beaches would only be made once the bites have been identified and when it is known whether to be a common fish bite, or caused by a fish that could be poisonous. On Saturday morning the beaches were reopened but with extra vigilance.

La Siesta, Alicante, resident John Francis De Veras talks to reporter Andrew Atkinson in Part 2 of an Exclusive interview about his life at ITV's Oxford Circus London studios; sailing to Estepona, Andalusia, on Spain's Costa del Sol, and the heartbreaking story of his Russian wife Reka's passing.
"I was Trevor McDonald's 'Ghofar'
SIR Trevor McDonald was headline news on British television for years literally - being the anchorman for ITV's News at 10. "I was Trevor McDonald's assistant his 'Ghofar' - run, fetch, carry me, during the years of filming the ITV news in London," said John, who worked behind the scenes as a production assistant. "I worked on the production side for 20 years - a lifetime - prior to being made redundant, when I headed for Spain," said John, born in London to
Spanish parents. "The building I worked in had three TV studios - for the midday news, the evening news and News at 10," said John, who started as a junior assistant producer. "All the big worldwide news events would be presented on News at 10 - the most important programme I was involved in - news stories were changing by the hour," said John. John, 79, said: "It was non stop excitement. Andrew Gardener, Reginald Bosenquet and Trevor McDonald were the most famous newscasters. "I worked alongside Trevor McDonald towards the end of my career - from being a very unimportant junior production assistant - but very well paid. "Trevor McDonald - Sir Trevor - was a very nice man. There were many famous big names that came into the studios, including the Royal Family, that included HM The Queen. "At the time it was never a case of thinking that they were special people. the TV programmes that were made. The viewers loved it." John, who lived in Shepherd's Bush, also worked on ITV programme Police 5: "Police 5 was an important programme. I loved it. Shaw Taylor presented Police 5. "It was his idea to present a programme, for viewers to help in crimes committed, in a hope of helping to catch criminals. "Details of criminals on videos, showing the crimes committed," said John. John added: "Since I retired I have travelled throughout Spain, and settled in La Siesta nine years ago, having had no previous fixed abode. "I lived on a boat for years, moving from one harbour to the next, on the Costa del Sol. Having arrived at Estepona harbour I stayed there for a long time. "I sailed from England to Gibraltar, and on to Estepona, where I moored." John added: "I have travelled around England many times - now my life is in Spain of which so many places have changed. "Guardamar, from the place I knew many years ago, is one such place that has changed so much down the years." John, still heartbroken, spoke about meeting a lady, who later became his wife, only to be cruelly taken away from him. "I had the good fortune, good luck in life, to meet a lady, Reka - who I fell in love with - and sailed the seas, from port to port," said John. "We travelled to the Balariec Islands, and eventually arrived in Torrevieja. I was the happiest man alive - up until three years ago when I lost her. "I lost the woman I loved. I suppose that is life. Reka was a lovely lady, born to a Russian mother. She was a wonderful woman," said John. "Reka's passing was due to a combination of Alzheimer's, that was so severe the rest of her body couldn't cope, and she died of a heart attack," said John. ANOTHER TRUE STORY "People say, “You only live once, so make the most of it.” Well, I’m proof that you can get a second chance says Kevin – and I owe it to Samaritans. "Looking back, things had been building up for a long time. Redundancy, relationship breakdowns… it was just one thing after another. "And though I had two lovely sons and some great mates, I didn’t want them to know how low I’d become.
Goodbye letters "Then, one evening, I found myself writing goodbye letters to my friends and family – I really believed they would be better off without me. "The next day I had breakfast with my son and watched as he left the house for work. As far as I was concerned, this would be the last time I would see him. "I left the house, thinking that I would never return. "I found myself looking through the contacts on my mobile, wondering if anyone would miss me. That’s when I came across Samaritans’ number from a

time when I’d called before but hung up, unable to talk. "To this day I don’t know what made me call again, but I’m so glad I did.
Making the call "The volunteer who answered was amazing. I was in a terrible state, but she was calm, understanding and, most importantly, seemed to genuinely care. "I poured my heart out to her and she gently suggested that I walk to the Samaritans Drop In Centre, where I would be safe and there’d be someone to talk to. "She stayed on the line while I did this and, at the Centre, the tears really began to flow. She listened to what I had to say, and talking to her helped me work out what I could do.
Moving on "Over the next few months, I slowly but surely began to put my life back together. Now, nearly three years on, I’ve got a whole new life. Should you identify with any of these issues and want to talk to someone in complete confidence then why not give us a call. We are SAMARITANS IN SPAIN – You Talk We Listen. COUNCIL COLLABORATION A group of young people, aged between 16 and 21 years old, belonging to the JOOP Programme (Jove Oportunitat) designed and organised by the IVAJ (Institut Valencià de la Joventut) and financed by the European Social Fund, recently had the opportunity to visit the EASY HORSE CARE RESCUE CENTRE Foundation, located in the municipality of Rojales. These young people who do not have academic qualifications or work experience, visited as part of this motivational and guidance programme. The boys and girls, together with the Town Council technician and their teacher, were able to see the great work that the Centre carries out by rescuing and caring for 120 horses, ponies and donkeys that have been abandoned and / or mistreated. This programme is a second chance for these young people just like at the Rescue Centre where all the animals have a second chance at life too. Miriam Ferrández, Rojales group teacher affirmed “This visit has helped them to become aware of the importance of caring for and respecting animals, and in some of them, the idea of ??participating as volunteers has been aroused, something that is very positive, given that their profiles are of young people who do not study or work.” One of the participants said “It was very nice to be able to touch the animals and be with them, but at the same time it was very sad to hear their stories and to know that there are people who treat animals like that. Luckily there are places like this where they are helped and are happy again.” And another student said “I've always liked ani-

mals, I do not understand that there are people capable of hurting them or abandoning them. I would like to volunteer here.” EHCRC was very excited that they had chosen to visit the Centre and very encouraged to see how interested the young people were in the animals and how concerned they were about the abuse and neglect that the animals had suffered. Employment is a big issue in the area and EHCRC currently employ three local people but they could do so much more for the local community and the 120 equines in their care as well as for animal welfare in general if the funding was available to employ more people. Rojales council are incredibly supportive and are continuing to pursue possibilities to include EHCRC in Employment and Tourism opportunities. Should funding become available maybe one or more of these young people could end up working at the Centre in the future! On the topic of Tourism, the Rescue Centre is currently number 1 on Trip Advisor’s List of Things To Do in Rojales. https://www.tripadvisor.com Also the Centre is now receiving more visitors from far afield including holiday makers who are on cruises and dock in Alicante and if the date doesn’t coincide with an Open Day then they can easily organise a Private Tour. EHCRC is also now appearing in some in flight magazines like Flybe. If you would like to find out more information on visiting, supporting and donating then check out their website: http://easyhorsecare.net/

Makeover for Orihuela Costa Playgrounds Orihuela council has announced the refurbishment of three parks located in Cabo Roig, La Zenia and Punta Prima, at a cost of 122,000 euros. This renovation will consist of new surfaces, urban furniture, the removal of surrounding vegetation and upgraded playgrounds, as well as adapting the parks for people with disabilities. The project of works for these three areas is currently available for inspection at the Orihuela council website. The calle Mistral de Cabo Roig, the Paseo del Mar en Cala Cerrada, La Zenia and la Avenida del Mar en Punta Prima are the three sites to be renovated. The designs will attempt to meet all the needs of users, both children and adults. For the youngest there will be play equipment to cater for the different age groups, with safety measures that will meet the most stringent of regulations. The plot chosen in Cabo Roig is located down by the Cabo Roig Club and former outdoor cinema. It has a total area of ?? 8,000 square meters for the construction of garden areas, leisure and sports. The area at La Zenia is by the hotel and will occupy an area of ??480 square meters. In addition to the stated improvements, the land will be conditioned and unsuitable shrubs will be replaced by new trees and plants, with an irrigation network. The lighting in the three zones will also be modified.
At present, the three areas are in poor condition. In Calle Mistral, the study considers that much of the vegetation is quite improvable, "with the planting of species such as acacias". In this garden there will need to be an irrigation system and a new floor. In La Zenia, the vegetation is in good condition and there is also a sprinkler irrigation system in place. The playground surface will be completely replaced. Meanwhile, in Punta Prima, artificial grass will be provided for the beds. In La Zenia’s Paseo del Mar, the children's play area will be created as a green area. The works planned will basically be in the conditioning of the soil and the installation of the irrigation system. In addition curbs, playground and pathways will be placed.

Quesada Bowls Club by Dee Stephenson This week our bowlers played the last match of the Summer season. Quesada Lancasters were playing San Luis Wellingtons who were lying in second place in the league. The Wellingtons put up a very strong performance and won the match 9-3 points with the Lancasters winning one rink and drawing on another. The shots were Lancasters 69, Wellingtons 93. This excellent performance by San Luis means they managed to leap-frog San Miguel Moors into first place, winning the league for the second year running. Congratulation San Luis Wellingtons! Meanwhile Quesada Blenheims put up a very strong fight in their match against San Miguel Christians but lost 4-8 with the shots San Miguel 92, Quesada 85. This means that this year, the Blenheims finish the season in a very creditable 3rd place in the league. A great result for the team - well done Blenheims! Thanks to both squads for their hard work and support this season, have a great summer break and see you in October for the Winter leagues. There are still opportunities for the members to play some competitive bowls though with invitation matches throughout the summer. The first is the Greenlands - Quesada friendly, always popular with our members. This event is played over 4 weeks, starting 17th July. Because of the intense heat this year the matches will be played in the evenings starting at 5.30pm. There will be 5 rinks of trips over 18 ends, unless particularly hot and then they will be reduced to 14 ends. And there’s still opportunities for casual players and new members. Quesada Bowls is a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. We welcome both new and experienced bowlers. In addition to league matches and Club competitions we still

The final result being 80 shots for to 106 against giving both teams 6 points each for a draw. The Hawks finished up 3rd in the table. Taking everything into consideration this was not a bad end result for us. Very well played to all of our team and let’s take heart from this and carry on to next season in high spirits.
The last match of the South Alicante Summer League Hurricane Division was played on Monday and the Horadada Hawks were away to San Luis Hercules. We didn’t know what the weather was going to do so we had a bit of everything. Thunder and lightning, rain and finished up with sunshine. The Hawks required 8 points to reclaim 2nd position in the table. In the first few ends of the match, looking across the rinks, it looked highly unlikely that we were going to achieve those points as San Luis were in complete command. As the match progressed the situation started to change. As is the spirit of Horadada we fought to the end and managed a win on 3 of the rinks. Unfortunately the 2 rinks that we lost on was by quite a margin and we didn’t get the overall shots to achieve our target of 8 points. Our winning rinks were:
Les Davies, Wayne Jackson and Roy Thomson 25 – 17
A big fat thank you to our Team Captain Alan Miller for all his efforts in the team selection, not an easy job as we are all well aware so well done Alan. Everybody enjoy the welcome break and we’ll all meet up again in September refreshed. Keep ‘em bowls a rollin’!

Carlos in safe hands at Monte By Andrew Atkinson Leader EXCLUSIVE
CD Montesinos star goalkeeper Carlos is to remain at the Valencia 2nd Regional G8 team - despite interest from other clubs.
Overall, the fishing was not up to standard you expect here but everyone caught and only 3kg separated first from ninth, so it was a good even match.
Shot-stopper Carlos won the CD Montesinos 201819 Steve Harris Trophy players' Player of The Year; and the Manager’s Player of The Year awards.
First was Alan Priest (peg 15) with 6.55kg just pipping Geoff Tempest (peg 23) who had 6.30kg. Equal third was Richard Crawshaw (peg 12) and Sue Boorman (peg 13) with 5.95kg.
"It is great news that Carlos is to continue his career at CD Montesinos - he is a very good goalkeeper.
Carlos put in outstanding performances throughout last season, in what was the club's second season in the Valencia 1st Regional G8, that ended in relegation.
Anyone wishing to join the club should contact Steve Fell either through the website or on 634 379 081.

Around and About the courses – La Marquesa In recent a recent edition we informed our readers that La Marquesa were re-modelling the 10th and 13th greens and that they had put in place two provisional greens of good quality for the summer and into the Autumn months. Well things have changed at pace and now there is some serious restructuring of a number of holes and in turn the layout of the course will be changed with the introduction of a new par 3 hole. Therefore until some time in October 2019 not only will you find provisional greens on the 10th and 13th holes but also on the 8th and 17th holes and you will see the new greens that have been created on the 8th hole and a new par 3 green near the 9th fairway and I understand that the plans are for an island green surrounded by water. We will keep you update of changes as they occur.
Pre-season training is set to get underway this month, with new manager Jesus running the rule over the squad, ahead of the 2019-20 campaign that kicks off in September.
All the players are delighted," CD Montesinos midfielder Maccan told me.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Our week started with the ever popular 3-2-1 Dusty Bin. In second spot with 87 points were myself, Geoff Biggerstaff, Bryan Neal and Petina Murray. Taking the honours, with 90 points were Dave Pulling, Mick Brentnall, Nigel Price and Marleen Billen. Both Dave and Mick were in the record scoring team for this competition (with 96 points) back in 2014. Wednesday’s Stableford competition had the twist of being a ‘Joker’. Each player nominated two holes before starting where the points scored were doubled. Reg Akehurst was obviously still enjoying a sugar high from all that 90th birthday cake he ate last week as he romped home with a very impressive 45 points. (This weeks ‘photo of a very dapper looking man, is the world renowned horse trainer, Reg, taken when he was in his sixties). With 42 points (which I thought would be enough!) I managed 2nd place and Olga Douglas took bronze with 41, on countback from Richard Connock. Four 2’s today with Harry Howard making two of them! The others went to Dave Pulling and Pete Dunn. Friday and it was a 2 ball better ball, with every player being restricted to just 5 clubs and a putter. Having just missed out a couple of days ago I was very pleased to being in the winning team, alongside Liz Robertson, with 46 points. A very close second, with 45, were Richard Connock and Marleen Billen. So, all in all good week for me and a few beer tokens in the bank! Finally, golfer says to caddy, ‘You’ve got to be the worst caddy in the world.’ Caddy replies, ‘I don’t think so. That would be too much of a coincidence.’ By Peter Reffell

Dettori Goodwood memories By Andrew Atkinson, Glorious Goodwood 2019 FRANKIE Dettori will return to Goodwood on Ladies Day, August 1, on the back of riding his 200th winner at the course in May, when successful on the John Gosden trained Terebellum. “I knew I was close in riding my 200th Goodwood winner, when winning on Terebellum - then I had it confirmed,” said Frankie, set to woo the ladies once again at the Sussex track this summer. "My first winner in England was in June 1987. Something I will never forget. It is special," said Dettori, who rode Lizzy Hare to victory at Goodwood in 1987, trained by Luca Cumani.

Last time out a La Manga we had a full field plus guests but only 29 members signed up to play Alicante this week and of those, two were posted as MIA (Missing In Alicante) after failing to make the start line. We assume Gerald and Noel are in the holding pattern at El Plantio awaiting our arrival there next week. Which is a shame, as they missed the chance to play a track in pleasingly good shape for the time of year and in temperatures which have yet to reach their blistering summer peak. Those who did find the course - with or without the aid of Google Maps or a satnav - generally took good advantage of the layout and a couple absolutely revelled in it. In Bronze, Neil Oliver took third with 32 points, followed in second place by Alan Macdonald with 34 points. The division winner for the second week in a row, and with an excellent tally of 41 points was Ralph Tilbrook. Well played, sir.

LaMangaTorre CC switched to playing in Torrevieja, from their base at La Manga resort. Saturday's T20 games will take place at Torrevieja cricket pitch, based at the Polideportivo Sports City Council, Avenida Monge y Bielsa s/n, Torrevieja. ond respectively with 33 and 34 points. At the other end of the scoreboard, Mike Greatorex propped up the field with a few less but after a 12week layoff from the game was oddly happy to leave with the Abacus winner’s wine. However, at the top of the pile and richly deserving a paragraph all to himself, Dave Allardice was our other consecutive week winner with an outstanding score of 42 points. Not only did he trounce the division and leave Ralph wondering how his 41 points still wasn’t enough to snag the overall bragging rights, Dave also took three of the five Nearest the Pin prizes awarded and capped that by making the birdie putt on all three greens. It’s probably fair to assume he won’t be playing off 13 next time out! The other nearies went to John Osborne and Kyrre Skarsmoen and we thank our sponsors for the NTPs and the Abacus, Mick from the Property Shop and Mike from Mike’s IPTV for providing the prizes. Next week we’re at El Plantio and there are still places on the start sheet. To find out more visit our website www.smgs.org or give our Captain, Tony Smal, a call on 639129223. Following El Plantio, we’re at Vistabella and Hacienda Riquelme and we would welcome guests at each event.

John Big Mac McCririck as big in racing as Alex Hurricane Higgins was to snooker
John 'Big Mac' McCririck, who died of lung cancer on July 5, aged 79, was for me, as big in racing as Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins was to snooker. Love him or hate him, John was a larger than life man, eccentric, cigar smoking, king of the racing pundits' world. The 'voice' of the punter - always fighting the punters cause - and he never held back on his punches, leaving those he criticised on the ropes! John, diagnosed with cancer in 2018, could do nothing as the awful disease spread, despite undergoing immunotherapy, that left him terribly weak. Doctors did all they could for John. And he was well aware of his illness. He knew he did not have long to live. A brave man, to the end. After appearing on ITV horseracing shows in the early eighties, prior to Channel 4 taking over the reins, John was THE face of TV racing - for 25 years. I met John at Haydock Park on many, many occasions, where punters, young and old, men, women, children, would request a photo together with him. Something he always obliged. Off camera John became 'Gentleman John', despite many taking a dislike to him, for courting controversy, at times. John departed C4 Racing in 2013, later losing an age discrimination case, made against the station and production company IMG Media Limited. His career all but ended from TV racing broadcasts. Something that hurt him dearly. John is to be cremated, and his ashes scattered at the site of the furlong post at the former Alexandra Park racecourse, 'Ally Pally', London. John leaves behind his wife Jenny, whom racing viewers will fondly remember him calling her the 'Booby'. Rest In Peace John McCririck. A legend of the turf, within the racing world. The punters friend.

COMING SOON - ONLY IN THE LEADER! MARTA Penalver, Spain international female football star, born in San Javier, Murcia, speaks exclusively to Costa Blanca and Costa Calida Leader sports reporter Andrew Atkinson, about her life in Italy where she plays in Serie A football; her dream coming true in representing Spain on the international stage; and from where it all started as a youth back home, playing street football! "Football is what I live for. Something that I am very proud of - and lucky to have my dream life come true," said Marta.
Jesus sets out his stall at CD Montesinos “Montesinos are a very humble club, full of people ready and willing to help - something I never had at Torrevieja,” - new manager Jesus
By Andrew Atkinson JESUS Santander is eyeing a return to the Valencia 1st Regional Group 8 for CD Montesinos, in the wake of suffering from relegation last season. “We are trying to build a side to challenge for promotion," said Jesus, who has spoken to potential players to sign for the Los Montesinos, Alicante, based club. Murcia born Jesus replaces Ruben, appointed manager in November 2018 until the end of the 201819 season, after the departure of Carlos Perez. "We hope to keep a good base of the players we have, and bring in extra quality, to make up a competitive squad," said Jesus, formerly at FC Torrevieja - now CD Torrevieja - in the 2002 season playing in Preferente Division, later promoted to the 3rd Division. Jesus, a youth player at Real Madrid, Malaga and Real Murcia, represented the Community of Valencia at U15 and U17 levels, being Champions of Spain, in their relevant age groups. On Jesus's appointment, CD Montesinos supporters club President Eddie Cagigao told me: "Jesus was involved at Villarreal, before returning to Torrevieja, where he was involved at different levels, before managing Torrevieja CF last season to finish seventh in the 2nd Regional Division." Jesus aims to impose a team at CD Montesinos, in a style to keep the ball, and 'play it around':
SUDUKO SOLUTION
"When we lose the ball I want us to be aggressive -in getting it back. "The quicker we can get it back - the more chance we have of scoring," reasoned Jesus. After the club's drop back into the 2nd Regional, after two season in the 1st Regional, Jesus said: "I know the club, and some of the players, well. "I played with CD Montesinos player German many years ago - and I know some of the local lads here too. "I also know we are a very humble club, full of people ready and willing to help, something I never had in my time at Torrevieja." CD Montesinos supporters have a widespread envied name within the Vega Baja, known as The Full Monte. "I am aware of the support and passion that the Peña Full Monte supporters club bring to the matches - and the work they do outside match days. "A massive boost to a small club like CD Montesinos. I know how privileged the club feels at having such a passionate and loyal fan base,” said Jesus. Looking ahead to the 2019-20 season, Jesus said: "I want to do well. I want to win every game. I also understand that sometimes in football that is simply not possible. "I want to play good football. Make sure my players fight for every ball, and work hard, both during matches and at training. "To give their all for the club. As a manager that’s all I can ask from them." Eddie added: "Jesus hopes to have a squad of 2021 players for pre-season training, due to start the second week of August. "The 2019-20 season kicks off around the 2nd or 3rd week of September. There will be five or six pre-season friendlies, including the “Fred Griggs Trophy”. "Jesus will be bringing in his own back room staff, in assistant manager Ignacio Iannopolo (Nacho), goalkeeping coach, Juan Carlos Linuesa (Juan Carlos), and fitness coach Chema."

Bombshell as Vaz departs Monte for Racing San Miguel By Andrew Atkinson EXCLUSIVE TALISMAN star striker Vazquinho has departed CD Montesinos in a shock move - to arch rivals Racing San Miguel. "Racing San Miguel have signed an informative 'Bomb'," said a spokesperson from Valencia 1st Regional G8 club Racing San Miguel. Brazilian ace Vazquinho, affectionately known as 'Vaz', by supporters of CD Montesinos, returned to the Los Montesinos, Alicante, based outfit in 2014, his third spell at the club, in a move from Sporting Saladar. Family man Vazquinho, married with two children, is a former Player of the Season, and leading goalscorer, at CD Montesinos during his spells at the club. CD Montesinos were relegated from the Valencia 1st Regional G8 in the 2018-19 season, in what was a disappointing campaign, that saw manager Carlos Perez sacked, and caretaker manager Ruben being appointed. The Vega Baja outfit appointed Jesus Santander as the new manager at CD Montesinos this month. Vazquinho - Evanildo Batista Barreira - will be a big loss to CD Montesinos, both on and off the field. Racing San Miguel have been busy during the summer in signing new players - in a bid to reach the Preferente under new manager Willy. "Vazquinho 'the man goal' a player who has been top goalscorer in all the clubs he has played - a historic player for the region. "Vazquinho will bring seniority and experience onto the pitch and in the dressing room at Racing San Miguel - a team with a lot of hunger," said the spokesperson. CD Montesinos Manager Jesus Santander and club President Alfredo both spoke to Vazquinho - and thought they had reached an agreement - but he decided to join local rivals San Miguel," supporters club President Eddie Cagigao told me. "The club would like to thank Vaz for his efforts at CD Montesinos and wish him well at his new club," said Eddie. "Jesus has spoken to all of last season´s players to
see if they wanted to stay - or leave," said Eddie. "A full list of players will be announced soon with new additions to a squad of 21 players for the 2019-20 season. Preferente Division Roundup By Steve Hibberd FFCV have released the schedule for the 2019/20 Preferente division season. The season starts on weekend of 1 September, continuing until the Christmas period, before pausing for a 2 match break on 29 December and 5 January. There then follows another recess on 15 March (Fiesta) and 12 April (Easter), before the season reaches its conclusion on 17 May. End of season play offs commence the following week, with the final match to be played on 14 June. There will be a new cup competition starting next season. Open to clubs in the Preferente division, plus those in Regional division 1 & 2, the
Comunitat cup will presumably be a midweek knock out competition, although FFCV have yet to release details. CFI Alicante have appointed 29 year old Mario Cartagena as their new coach. Looking good for the play offs all last season, CFI suffered heartbreak on the very last day, but must fancy their chances of going one better in the next campaign. CD Thader Rojales are pleased to announce that Manuel Ramirez (aka Mora), has returned to his home town club, following a 3 year stint in England. Mora played for non league teams Cambridge City and Soham Town, but is now keen to return to his roots. On the clubs facebook page, Mora is described as an attacking skillful midfielder, who has the ability to beat a player, as well as having a lethal shot.
