Early on Saturday morning, nine emergency and civil protection vehicles left Orihuela for Valencia, together with the Councillor for Emergencies, Victor Valverde, as well as a City Council truck loaded with essential aid.

This shipment includes cleaning tools and utensils, such as buckets, wheelbarrows, mops, brooms, metal dustpans, rubbish bags and gloves, as well as cleaning products such as bleach and detergent.

Basic necessities including baby wipes, personal hygiene products, razors, shower gels and industrial toilet paper have also been donated. They will meet up with 50 officers from the Orihuela Local Police Force whose agents have been in Paiporta, Algemesi, Albal and Cheste since early on Friday morning.

The main mission of the Orihuela Local Police officers is to regulate traffic in the most affected areas, since roads must be diverted where they are working.

They will also help with the prevention of looting in shops and homes, which is unfortunately prevalent at the time of writing with over 100 people arrested, and also the distribution of supplies to areas that the Local Police all-terrain vehicles can reach.

ORHUELA POLICE PREPARED

The Superintendent of the Orihuela Local Police, Rubn Selma, explained that "we have already experienced the devastation and difficulties that this type of disaster brings and as such we are more prepared to face this type of problem. The agents not only carry their essential police equipment but also their own provisions so as not to be a burden to the authorities in the affected areas. We are going to help, that is our mission, to help and to strengthen, not to add to the difficulties.”

The Local Police of Guardamar del Segura, Almoradi and Pilar de la Horadada have also joined the rescue efforts with a team of 14 agents from Guardamar del Segura, equipped with rescue material and food, deployed to the Advanced Command Post (PMA) in Picanya, together with personnel from other municipalities.

The Local Police of Almoradi has sent a patrol to one of the most affected municipalities, Paiporta, to join the operation, and four agents from Pilar de la Horadada have joined the emergency unit, while Ambumar Sya have provided an Asistencial ambulance, an unassisted ambulance, a VIR vehicle; in addition to human resources: 5 Emergency Health Technicians (TES) and a DUE with a Diploma in Nursing. Meanwhile the support of members from the Local Police and Civil Protection of Torrevieja is centred in the municipality of Montcada where they are assisting with rescue and recovery work.

TRAVELLING BY BUS

Around 40 people left Orihuela on Saturday to join the volunteering and cleaning tasks in the areas of the province of Valencia most affected by the DANA. Thirty-six people, from different points of the province, left on a bus, donated by Bus Siguenza, with the aim of offering help in the cleaning tasks. In addition to cleaning supplies, they also carried warm clothing, non-perishable food and drinking water on the bus.

A further contingent of Civil Protection left on Sunday, with bilge pumps, a generator and personnel specialised in laying hoses and managing accumulated water. There was also a bus load of volunteers from Orihuela to Valencia who will carry out cleaning work.

A bus load of volunteers also left Dolores on Sunday morning to carry out essential tasks such as food distribution, support in cleaning tasks and basic assistance.

In addition, three vans with cleaning supplies, drinking water and non-perishable food were chartered by the Orihuela district of Molins, and sent, full of materials donated by various neighbourhood associations and individuals.

LOCAL COLLECTIONS

While the authorities and working volunteers travel north to Valencia to help wherever they can and organisations like Real Madrid donate huge sums of money to kick start a joint

fundraising campaign initiated by the Real Madrid Foundation and the Red Cross, the people, businesses and organisations of the Vega Baja were also quick to rally round with their offers of support.

Although not quite on the same scale it is just as, if not more important, to those poor people who are currently suffering from the loss of their families, their homes or their livelihoods, because the aid is almost immediate.

Organisations large and small rallied round with Castillo Trans Delivery Point Central storage in Benejuzar, being one of the first, offering it’s facility for the storage of donations and it’s vehicles for their subsequent shipment to the affected areas.

The Oasis Bar in San Luis was a bar that put out an early appeal along with The Helping Hands Clothing and Food Bank and the Unity Bar in El Chaparral, which quickly rounded up 24 bags of clothing, toiletries and food along with E235 in donations.

One individual, David Longworth, simply parked up his car in the Mercadona car park in San Luis, where he too set about collecting donations for the Valencia flood victims. As soon as his car was full, he put it into gear and drove off north.

Torrevieja Council was quick to open up the Municipal Leisure Centre (CMO), as a drop off point situated just behind CARREFOUR, manned by, amongst others, members of The Torry Army. Torrevieja is also accepting donations at the Plaza de la Constitucion in the town centre.

The Orihuela Costa Fiesta Commission set themselves up in front of Primark, in La Zenia Boulevard where they will remain, between 10am and 9pm, for the coming days. They are currently asking for volunteers to help receive the donations.

The Bushwacka in Cabo Roig were collecting donations all weekend, asking for anyone attending any of their events to contribute whatever they could.

The Laundry shop in Playa Flamenca is another that set it self up as a -drop off- point, as did The Royal Oak, which has since moved as least one consignment to the Castillo Trans Delivery Point Central storage in Benejuzar.

KEEP THE DONATIONS COMING

The donations also keep coming into the Hens Teeth in Villamartin but they say that more is still required. With the help of Andy they made two trips to Benejuzar on Friday and they would like to say a big thankyou to Emilio who picked up a big load and has since taken it to Valencia. only to return to pick up more for another trip to Valencia which he made on Saturday.

Big thanks to Andy who contacted us to help out and do another two trips to Benejuzar.

The Big Reds Animal Association has been busy collecting items which they will take north before returning with 12 rescue cats and dogs that they will accommodate in their shelter.

There are further collection points at Dolores Town Hall, the Lower floor in Habaneras shopping centre, Cwtch Tea Rooms and The Card Shop Punta Marina, and in Rojales the Council has a designated drop off point at the indoor market by the town hall.

Collection points are also being manned in Punjabi Paradise 2 Quesada and in The Club Quesada.

Orihuela is gearing up for a memorable Christmas by allocating nearly 900,000 euros for festive preparations. The city has placed four contracts totalling 434,524 euros, alongside two existing tenders: 30,524 euros for the Santa Claus Village and 45,300 euros for the Christmas campaign.

In total, six contracts account for a budget of 510,348 euros, plus an additional 375,000 euros for Christmas lights, making the total expenditure exceed 885,000 euros.

This significant investment aims to avoid the issues faced last year when the festive budget was just 61,000 euros, resulting in minimal lighting and austere festivities.

The new budget includes 375,093 euros for Christmas lights across the entire municipality, ensuring all areas, including the 24 pedanias, are well-lit and festive.

Additional contracts cover the Three Kings parades with a budget of 207,696 euros, 154,940 euros for the city, and 52,756 euros for the coast. As tradition, the Kings will visit the Vega Baja Hospital on January 4 before their official reception in the city.

The coastal parade will have a marine world theme, starting at Playa Flamenca Town Hall and ending at La

Other notable contracts include:

The Christmas Market in the city (60,500 euros) from December 14 to 24.

A Magic Walk (66,550 euros) on December 20 and 21.

The New Year's Eve party (7,260 euros) on December 31.

Santa Claus parades are planned for both the urban center (39,675 euros) and the coast (24,200 euros), featuring goblins, animated characters, stilt walkers, puppeteers, and ladies from Lapland.

On December 23, the Santa Claus float will parade through the city.

On December 20, the coast will see Mama Noel accompany five Christmas queens, representing different reigns, in a parade full of surprises.

The installation of the municipal Nativity scene, a cherished tradition, has a budget of 27,191 euros. This includes 24,771 euros for the city, covering restoration and new pieces, and 2,420 euros for the coast.

The Nativity scenes will be located at the former Orihuela tourist office and Playa Flamenca town hall.

Zenia shopping centre, where 1,000 gifts will be distributed to children.

ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART GROW TETCHIER!

I am home alone for the past week, once again trying to keep a brave face on my temporary isolation. Ok, forget that … the truth is, as any of the Lads will confirm, the first few days of being on your own is sheer and utter bliss!

One mug, one plate … just rinse under the tap between uses: Coffee machine churning it out; air fryer ready for tee (tea?) off, and fridge stocked with goodies: Shoes left wherever I kick them off, trousers on the floor, toilet seat up and bed only ‘straightened’ after I snuggle into it – and not one person tells me I went into town ‘looking like a tramp!’

None of this means that the lines of communication are closed during a separation; far from it; ‘If you were me, where would you find a singlet vest in this house?’ ‘Can this yoke be cooked in the microwave?’. This is a sample of my dispatches. I am always polite, courteous and always say ‘please’ – but I can’t say that I receive a similar kind, sympathetic response - or the type of answer I deserve.

Absence appears to sharpen certain tongues!

Those of you who were paying attention will recall that I recently completed a section of the Camino to raise funds for Irish Hospice

New La Mata Sports Centre to open in November

Torrevieja is gearing up for the grand opening of its newest sports facility, La Mata Sports Centre. Scheduled to open its doors in November, this state-of-the-art centre is set to become a hub for sports and community activities.

Foundation. (Thank you for your sponsorship). There were thirty of us in a diverse group of the greatest bunch of people one could wish to spend time with.

Anyway, you know me and anyone who ever wore a county jersey in hurling or football attracts me like a fly to flypaper. And so I sent Mrs youcantbeserious a Whatsapp Camino photo of myself sandwiched between Cork legend, Niall Geary and Louth great, Patrick Butterly.

Instant reply back - and as I opened it, expecting at least a ‘WOW’. This is what I got instead; ‘White shorts, white shoes, black socks … not a great image!’

Can you believe it? Absence making the mind sharper … and tongue tetchier! I can give you a worse example …

Some years back, when we still owned Paddy’s Point Pub, Mrs Youcantbeserious was on her way to join me in Spain after a twoweek separation. She had been having trouble with a painful foot and I reckoned I had found the cure. My German friends swore by the healing powers of the salt lakes and mud baths outside Torrevieja.

The day after the bride arriving, we had to cancel the first walk in the salt water, due to the fact she was

suffering … how can I say this and protect the sensitivity of the Gorls; wife had ‘Turkish Tummy’ … and couldn’t stir far from that room I told you about where the lid can be either up or down …

So, next morning we head for the salt lake. The salt is so thick and the granules so sharp you have to wear foot protection and wash the salt off skin, clothing and runners with fresh water immediately afterwards. Mrs YCBS did not rinse her runners sufficiently and the following day they were hard as a rock – set like cement.

The good news was that the saltwater treatment seemed to have worked on the faulty foot. Then being me with my big mouth, I couldn’t help myself and put one of my own feet in it. ‘Pity you didn’t come out and sit in the lake the first day you arrived, and you could have cured the other ailment’, sez I!

The instant reply risked leaving me emotionally damaged for life, had I not had a proven record in the relevant department. ‘No, you should have sat in it … when I see what it did to my shoe!’ Ouch …!

I pulled one back however a short time later. I went to Dublin Airport to collect herself. We time it so that I don’t have to park, but instead pick up the passenger at the

“I’m glad that you are back Gertrude. I’ve run out of razor blades, can I borrow your tongue?”

Departure drop-off. I got the ‘just landed’ txt on the M50 and stalled for half an hour before pulling into the agreed pick-up spot. Just then my phone went ‘beep beep’. ‘Waiting for baggage’, said the txt. ‘Me too’, I replied – and drove around the block!

Hard to believe that after all the abuse I begin to miss her after a week.

dab of after shave at the ready for myself.

I guess I’m just an oul softie at heart - but isn’t life great all the same … J.C … since writing the above, I have just put a dent in her new car. If there is a blank space here next week … call the cops!

OCTOGENARIAN ROBBED IN RAFAL

A couple has been arrested by the Callosa de Segura Civil Guard, in collaboration with the Rafal Local Police, for the violent robbery of an 84-year-old woman in Rafal. The incident occurred in early September when the victim was accosted on the street.

The male suspect, under the guise of asking for directions, forcefully removed a gold necklace from the woman's neck. The victim sustained injuries requiring medical attention.

The investigation, launched following a community outcry, led authorities to identify the suspects. It was revealed that the man had an accomplice who acted as a get-

away driver.

On October 18th, both the 39-year-old man and 40-year-old woman, known for their involvement in similar crimes, were apprehended. They have been charged with robbery with violence and are currently awaiting trial.

TORREVIEJA PLAN TO LOCATE CAT COLONIES

Through its Animal Protection Department, the council has been actively sterilising stray cats, with nearly 400 procedures completed between January and October 24.

SECOND COSTA HEALTH CENTRE REMAINS UNCERTAIN

The proposed construction of a second health centre in Orihuela Costa has hit a significant barrier. Despite strong local advocacy, the Ministry of Health has excluded the project from its current roadmap.

Tomas Moreno, President of Unidos por la Costa, has been a vocal advocate for improved healthcare infrastructure in the region.

He has repeatedly highlighted the severe strain on the existing health centre, particularly

during peak seasons when the population swells.

The current facility, located on Calle del Mar in Aguamarina, is ill-equipped to handle the demand, suffering from overcrowding, insufficient resources, and a shortage of medical personnel.

While the 2024 budget earmarked funds for the expansion of the existing centre, progress has been blocked by land-related issues. The Ministry has emphasized that

these obstacles must be resolved before the expansion can proceed.

The political landscape has also influenced the project's trajectory.

The previous administration in Valencia rejected the idea of a second centre due to concerns about insufficient health card holders. However, the current municipal government in Orihuela favours expansion over a new facility.

Nevertheless, both residents and opposition groups contend that both expansion and a second centre are necessary to adequately address the region's healthcare needs.

The situation remains uncertain, with the future of the second health centre hinging on the resolution of land-related issues and the alignment of political priorities.

Meanwhile, the local community continues to urge for decisive action to alleviate the chronic healthcare challenges facing residents of and visitors to Orihuela Costa.

Pastor Keith Brown will be leading Remembrance at the small church, Capilla de las Mil Palmeras, this coming Sunday, which this year, with the demise of the Royal British Legion in Orihuela Costa,is being organised by The Royal Naval Association.

Once again the occasion, which, for many years has been superbly supported by the Pilar de la Horadada Ayuntamiento,is sure to attract a large congregation so,if you intend to be there, please ensure that you are seated no later than 10.30am.

The event will get underway at 10.45 when

veterans, led by The Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, and an array of Military Standards, will march to the church from the Olympia Restaurant,in which everyone is invited to join.

The service will be attended by the Mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, together with a number of his councillors, guests and local dignitaries including the Assistant British Consul, Sara Munsterhejlm.

Once again a large screen will be positioned at the front of the church with the service relayed to the many hundreds of attendees who are unable to get a seat inside.

Government plans for 10 cent increase in price of diesel fuel

As part of the 2025 Budget, the Government plans a 10-cent increase in the price of a litre of diesel from 1 April next year. This measure, would seek to align the price of diesel with that of petrol in Spain.

This move has now been registered in Congress through amendments to the Bill establishing a Complementary Tax to guarantee a minimum global level of taxation. This means that the aim would be to equate the price of diesel to that of petrol, between which there is currently a difference of just over 10-euro cents per litre at the pumps. However, the measure is likely to exclude professionals from the increase.

HISTORICAL

ALICANTE LAGS BEHIND IN SALARIES

Alicante, despite being Spain's fifth-largest economy, struggles with lower-than-average salaries. The province's average monthly contribution base is around €1,864 gross, about €204 less than the national average, and this gap has been widening.

Factors include a high prevalence of precarious employment, a dominant service sector with lowerpaying jobs, and a tourism-driven economy leading to seasonal employment. This salary disparity impacts per capita income, placing Alicante among the lowest in Spain with €19,705.

To address this, the Institute of Economic Studies of the Province of Alicante (Ineca) suggests boosting business productivity and competitiveness, attracting strategic investments, and forming partnerships for economic growth. Addressing these issues effectively could significantly improve it’s economic outlook.

ROUTE FOR U3A WALKING GROUP

The Walking Group had their October trip to the village of Portman. The 10km walk included a visit and a study of the old, disused, fisherman’s cave cottages before continuing on to see the abandoned railway trucks and the remains of a laundry which had dominated the town for many years. The extraction industry was originally started by the Romans but was even-

They advised the victims to deposit their savings into bank accounts supposedly for mortgage loans, but the money disappeared. The total scam was over 40,000 euros. The investigation revealed that the suspects, a father and son, accessed the bank accounts and withdrew the money for leisure activities. The alleged perpetrators, aged 24 to 40 with a history of property crimes, were arrested between October 22 and 25. The stolen bicycle was recovered, and the suspects appeared before the Orihuela Courts.

Misuse of the Horn can Have Serious Consequences

Vehicles which use the roads of Spain must be fitted with an audible warning device by law. That includes bicycles, and electric scooters, and those without face a fine. On motor vehicles the audible warning device normally takes the form of a horn and is integral in the vehicle.

Article 110 of the traffic law details when a horn can be used. Aside from the authorised reasons we will explain, the law is quite clear that “unmotivated or exaggerated use is prohibited”.

Under normal circumstances, acoustic warnings can only be made by drivers of non-priority vehicles, in other words, vehicles not responding to an emergency, in a very limited number of occasions.

The primary role of the audible warning, or horn, is to alert other road users of our presence, and can be used to avoid a possible collision.

On narrow roads where there are often two cars and there are bends that prevent the visibility of traffic in the opposite direction, the horn is usually used to warn of our presence to approaching traffic.

Out of populated areas, to warn the driver of another vehicle of your intention to overtake.

You can sound the horn before overtaking a vehicle to inform the driver of your intention to overtake it, so that the driver is made aware of your intention and remains to the right edge of the road.

To warn of their presence to the other road users, in accordance with the provisions of article 70.

We must never use our horn out of anger or frustration, and remember, the rule is clear when it comes to the risk of a collision, the horn should only be used to avoid a situation, in other words, before it has happened.

To give a working example, if we see a vehicle at a junction through which we have priority, but we think that the vehicle MAY pull out in front of us, perhaps because they haven’t seen us, then that is a justified and correct use of the horn. If, however, that vehicle has already pulled out in front of us, then the use of the horn would not serve for avoidance in any way. Our concentration and actions should be wholly about avoiding a worse situation. Using the horn, could in fact make matters worse.

The reason behind this logic, as neuroscientist Rachelle Summers explained on her social media channel, is that the horn is used to draw attention, it is a distraction in a neurological sense, and so if a driver has entered

into a risky situation, the most important course of action is to get out of that situation safely. If we sound our horn, we are causing a distraction and adding to both the confusion and the elements that the mistaken driver must deal with, thus adding to the confusion

and potential disastrous outcome.

The second neurological reason is that overuse of the horn can reduce the impact being considerably diminished, as the brain becomes accustomed to it, and it no longer serves as the warning it is intended to be.

Waiting on God

What do you do when you are waiting on an answer from God? Do you wait in patience with calm peace, trusting in His timing? Do you “storm the heavens” with your requests day after day? Or even morning, noon and night? Do you beg, plead and bargain with God? Do you do a little of all of these?

In Philippians 4:6-7 we are told: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

What a nice scripture verse that is, comforting, yes? Let´s unpack it a little and delve in to what it is saying.

Firstly, do not be anxious. Why would we be anxious about prayer? But in truth many people are, are they not? Does God hear me? Is He even listening to me? There is another thing right there. Are we just asking or are we asking in prayer? Is there a difference? Do we doubt ourselves when we try to pray? Why? Where does this guilt and doubt come from? In Jeremiah 33: 3 God says “call to me and I will answer you…” and 4 chapters back in Jeremiah 29:13 He promises“You will seekMeand find Me whenyou search for Mewith allyour heart.“

So, are we pleading with an unknown deity or are we searching for God with all our heart? And then there is the “with thanksgiv-

Working behind the scenes

As anyone who has worked in the theatre knows, be it amateur or pro, there is an awful lot more going on behind the scenes than there is on stage! This is no less true for the ADAPT Theatre Group which has a whole team of people who can sew costumes, make props and understand which knobs to turn on complicated sound systems. Of course all our members like to get into the spirit of things and here is a picture of our sound technician Ian (also known to many as Smithy) doing his thing as a pirate for our recent pantomime Peter Pan.

This year’s panto is “Snow White and the 7 guiris” and will be performed on 28th, 29th and 30th November at 7 p.m. and 1st December at 12 midday in the Salon de Actos, Casa de Cultura, c/Alcalde Julio Albaladejo, San Pedro del Pinatar. We are sponsored by the ADAPT Metal

Detecting group and all money raised goes to local charities. Tickets are just 4e and are available from Mail Pinatar, c/Reyes Catolicos, San Pedro del Pinatar and Bar Amigos (open p.m.) or phone Eric on 656 361 098.

As the pantomime is in English and Spanish we would like to encourage you to come along with your Spanish friends and neighbours. To find out more about the Adapt Theatre Group visit: https://adapttheatregroup.wordpress.com/ or phone Eric on 656 361 098

ing” part of that first verse.

Do we thank God for all He has done and is doing in our lives, for all the things that we are blessed with on a daily basis? Did you know that when Jesus cured the 10 Lepers of their disease, only 1 come back to say “Thank You!” Do we honour and respect God with a daily Thank You? Let´s try making our requests to include thanksgiving for that already granted.

And then we come to that lovely passage “And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding” Do you know that peace?

Do you know that Jesus Christ, Son of the living and active God, is The Prince of Peace? Have you spoken to Him? Do you understand that we can only have eternal life through Jesus? And then at end of that scripture, once we offer Him our hearts He “will guard your hearts and your minds.”

What a promise to be able to stand on! God is as real today as He ever has been. We just have to call out to Him and seek Him with all our heart. He does hear and He will answer – though not always in the way we expect… But that´s another day´s article!

Sadly our webpage is down but it is being renovated and will be online again very soon. In the meantime we are still on Facebook.

PRESIDENTE TAKES GOLD AT ALTAONA

San Miguel GS at Altaona (30 October)

“How was it?” I asked as I didn’t play today –“It was luverrrly” was the reply!

Well can’t argue with that – a diverse courselush fairways and greens vs a fair bit of desert-style gravel – Altaona, it’s had a lot of input recently and seems to be on the up. Our second time here and after the furious storms of preceding days a calm, sunny, warm day ensued.

The air was fresh on the outset and the sun returned from behind the clouds. The rain had definitely softened the fairways but not much evidence was left of the recent deluge. 47 eager golfers teed off rather early, not long after sunrise which was very noticeable after the clocks going back at the weekend. The consensus was that the course was in good shape with soft, young greens – not really surprising after the previous days’ rain. Altaona requires a fair amount of accuracy on

the fairways due to the layout and aligning sparsely-vegetated desert rough.

Again, this week some good scoring (and a

SPURS ACADEMYGRADUATE MOVES TO ELCHE

Tottenham Hotspur's academy midfielder Yago Santiago has been sold to Spanish second division side Elche.

The 21-year-old joined Spurs' academy from Celta Vigo in 2019 and showed promise, particularly last season in the Premier League 2 where he scored 8 goals and provided 7 assists in 1700 minutes.

However, despite his impressive performances, Santiago was not given a chance in the first team under new manager Ange Postecoglou.

While some fans may be disappointed, this is a common occurrence in youth academies.

Most players do not make it to the top level of their parent club, and selling them to other clubs for a small fee is a positive outcome.

Santiago's move to Elche provides him with an opportunity to continue his development in his home country and potentially earn a transfer to a bigger club in the future.

The exact terms of the deal, including the transfer fee and any potential sell-on clauses, have not been disclosed.

However, it is likely that Tottenham received a modest fee for the player.

In Premier League 2 Yago averaged a goal or an assist every game.

TWO CELEBRATED JERSEY GOLFERS, Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, started out as young caddies on this 6,120 yd links course, and played here once a week on a Sunday afternoon, although they were actually members of La Moye golf club over on the west of the island. Vardon would go on to claim six Open titles and Ray would win the Open in 1912 and the US Open in 1920.

In 1878 a number of Jersey residents decided to lay out a small course on Grouville Common, a tract of sandy heathland with views of impressive Mont Orgueil castle. The club received its Royal warrant in 1879 from Queen Victoria. This members- only club, steeped in tradition, is known as a place where golf's past and present meet. During WW2 the course was turned into a minefield during the German occupation.

Played along Grouville bay, the 1st tee shot must be placed between the stone walls of Fort Henry, a relic of the Napoleonic wars, on the left of the fairway, and two German gun emplacements on the right, a testing start to the round.

LA MOYE GOLF CLUB

Set spectacularly on sand dunes overlooking St. Ouens Bay, La Moye is an impressive links, measuring 6,797 yds. A great course for seaside golf, but the going is tough when the wind is up. The original course at La Moye was laid out in 1902 by George Boomer, Headmaster of the local school attended by both Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. La Moye attracted members who were turned away by the Royal Jersey golf club, and it was recorded that Royal Jersey members were amused by the La Moye golfers, who, as tradesmen, played in what outdoor clothing they had, usually riding breeches and leather gaiters. The original clubhouse was the Boomers' kitchen. George Boomer's sons were also excellent golfers, George became head professional at

La Moye was damaged to make way for fortifications in the war and the clubhouse was destroyed. The course was renovated during the 1960s under the guidance of Henry Cotton.

Two beautiful courses on a beautiful island where incidentally, I spent my honeymoon, although on that occasion I didn't think I'd better take my clubs.

THE FALDO SERIES, the only global amateur series for boys and girls with handicaps from +4 to 12, was conceived in 1996, after Sir Nick Faldo's sixth major triumph. The non-profit making series consists of 40 events though 30 countries, and was a stepping stone in the careers of Rory McIlroy, Eddie Pepperell and Danny Willett. “We divided the UK into regions, playing on great courses like Royal St.

Faldo's son Matthew who now runs the Series says: “We're all looking forward to The 28th Junior Tour Grand Final on the 12th-14th November at the Al Ain Equestrian Shooting and Golf Club, Abu Dhabi, where 65 of the world’s best young golfers will compete and our 2024 champion will be crowned.”

According to the blurb, spectators attending this year’s DP World Tour Championship, Dubai at Jumeirah Golf Estates, (Nov 14-17th) will have no excuse to be bored. While the top 50 battle it out “spectators can enjoy free swing clinics, the Trick Shot Boys will dazzle with their brilliance, the ladies will be spoiled at pamper stations and the kids will be entertained with glitter face painting. Live music will be provided by the fantastic Greg Pearson, (never heard of him either) and the Red Light

PRESIDENTS CUP AT NEW SIERRA GOLF COURSE

Our annual competition for the Presidents Cup and Fundraiser for the Royal British Legion was a fantastic success.

This was wholly due to the support of all you lovely people, the staff & management of Drivers Bar & Bistro and our representative from the RBL, Bob Smith. Thirty of us teed off on time at 11:40 in quite a stiff cool breeze which morphed into a familiar warm sunny Costa Blanca Day after a couple of hours. The course was in very good condition, save for a couple of fairways on the new back nine, so all in all very conduciveto some pretty impressive scores as reflected in the leaderboard.

Overall winner and recipient of the Presidents Cup was Cheryl Isacc with a stonking 47pts. Many congratulations Cheryl, your name has been added to our Roll of Honour on the website.

Back at Drivers Bar our presentation dinner was preceded with a recitation by Cliff Morton of an "Ode to the Fallen" followed by a moving delivery of "The Last Post" by Ian Gibson whoalso said 'Yorkshire Grace' (lol) before we

tucked in to our delicious meals which were then served.

After dinner Cliff presented the Golf competition prizes and the Presidents Cup in his usual inimitable manner accompanied by much laughterand applause.

A bumper raffle followed which was rounded off with the results of the 'Guess the number of Golf balls in the box' competition (it was 173 by the way). All of which raised a total of e340 for the Royal British legion, great job everyone.

We couldn't have done any of the above without the continued hard work, sponsorship and support of Mags, Pete, Glenys & Alan and their team with special thanks to Chef Ben for such a great event dinner.

Much appreciation also to Brenda & Wayne our volunteer helpers, Pete & Cliff
