FROM PAGE ONE Although the airport was originally built by a private developer it is now owned by the Murcia Regional Government after management company, Aeromur, were unable to finance the final stages, which included the process of obtaining the necessary opening licenses. At a press conference held by Francisco Bernabé, Murcia’s Environmental minister, he said that the inventory provided no surprises and that everything seemed to be as expected. It would now form the basis of the awarding of the management contract to a new operator. The document divides all goods into four categories, ranging from infrastructure and civil works, (airfield, airport terminal and control tower). It also includes the cargo area, ecopark, almost 2000 parking spaces and a number of other multi purpose buildings, covering an area of 100 hectares. The next step to be taken by the regional government will be the development of economic and financial study, the contract for which will be awarded before the end of the month. There are currently 3 companies under consideration, following the award of which there will be a period of three months preparation before tenders for the concession to manage the airport in the future are invited, in early 2016. However, with the demise of the anticipated Paramount Theme Park because of environmental concerns, the throughput of passengers in the region is unlikely to come anywhere close to the numbers that were channelled through San Javier when Polaris World were at the top of their game. Current figures seem to be in the region of half a million passengers a year as opposed to the 3 million that we saw just a few years ago. The maths just don’t add up. According to the Spanish Press, the Murcia Regional Government is adamant that it will have the management plan ready to distribute to interested parties by January 2016. But in view of recent history I can’t believe for one minute they are going to be climbing over each other to submit their tenders. One thing that is certain is that any potential bidders will want a cast iron guarantee that San Javier will close before committing themselves to any Corvera Airport management deal. Regional President Pedro Sanchez says that he already has the agreement from the Prime Minister that San Javier will indeed close but with a General Election just weeks away, and the current government less than assured of being returned to power, it could all still change once again. Now where have I heard that before?

Vivace Classical Choir celebrates its 10th year. As the autumn season approaches, Vivace Musical Director Tom Pargeter is busy preparing plans for the special year ahead. After the great success of Mozart’s “Requiem” last season, Tom wanted something different and challenging for the choir to tackle to celebrate this important anniversary The major work chosen for this season is “The Armed Man” by Karl Jenkins, to be performed towards the end of March 2016. This wonderful work is a modern Mass for Peace, and was written for the millennium, with special thought being given to the war that was then raging in Kosovo. As 2016 approaches, we are still very aware that our world is not at peace. “The Armed Man” is based on a 15th
century poem of the same name, and now, over 500 years later, the words have the same powerful meaning. As a lighter part of the year’s programme, Vivace will be hosting its usual Christmas Carol Evening in San Miguel, when the public is invited to join with the choir in an informal evening of Carols. This year, the choir will also sing a short Christmas Cantata within the evening’s programme. It is a beautiful work “Love Transcending” by the 20th century American composer John W Peterson, which the very much smaller choir sang in their first Christmas concert in 2007. Tom is certain that the many newer members will really enjoy the warmth and spirit of this seasonal item, and those
who sang it first time round are very much looking forward to revisiting it. Starting 10 years ago, with some 16 singers, the choir now has more than 60 members, of many different nationalities. There is always room for some more voices, though, and Tom would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in joining the choir. Music reading is an advantage, but by no means a necessity. Rehearsals are on Thursday evenings at 7.15 – 9.30 in the Casa de Cultura in San Miguel de Salinas. If you are interested in joining this friendly and welcoming choir, for more info contact Tom on: 96 572 0919 - or by email: tomandkaty@tpargeter.com
Cathy still hitting the right notes! Former artiste Cathy Carson was the post-meeting guest as she took to the stage to chat about her life growing up in the entertainment industry. Cathy had the audience enthralled as she covered her 49 year career in a little over 20 minutes, from her early days as a young lass in Lincolnshire, with summer season bookings along the coast, to a tour of the United States when she was just 14 years old. She told how she was offered a contract by CBS Records when she was performing in Philadelphia. However, she felt she was just a little too young so she turned it down, and even today she still wonders what might have been! She returned to the UK to become lead vocalist with the popular band called The Three New Pennies and when it eventually disbanded Cathy continued her career into the
90’s as a soloist. After a break, which included a move to Spain, Cathy once again hit the venues on the Costa Blanca. Now she was well supported by ‘Tubby Hubby’ Keith Brown, but all too soon she once again decided to put her solo career on hold as she took on the post of Musical Director with the Charity singers TAABS, a role that she held until her retirement 3 years ago. And just one final request from the members saw Cathy break into song once again with a couple of her all time favourites which she closed, hopefully not for the last time, to thunderous applause.

Elche and Guardamar Councils call for Municipal Nature Area The clearing of the forest costs more than 500,000 euros every year and this is money that the councils can ill afford.
On Tuesday afternoon, councillors from both Elche and Guardamar had a meeting with the Regional Minister for the Environment, Elena Cebrián, during which the group visited the pine forest (Pinada de Guardamar), a large pine plantation in the area of La Marina, dating from the early 20th century, and which borders both municipalities. Mayor José Luis Sáez, the Councillor for Environment, Silvestre Garcia and members from the Technical Environmental Department spoke of the abandonment and neglect that the area has suffered in recent years. The area has been ignored during which time there have been many fires, mainly during this summer and a lack of attention has now also brought with it the fear that the forest may well be affected by the scourge of Tomicus destruens, the pine weevil. The two councils then jointly requested that the minister advance the status of the park to that of a Municipal Nature Area, an initiative that would help to protect it, ensuring a significant improvement to safeguarding the character of the pine forest in future years. The first tree planting designed to prevent Guardamar from the steady encroachment of sand dunes started in 1900 under Francisco Mira y Botella, a well-known Spanish countryside engineer from Alicante. The majority 800 hectares of
dunes was reforested with pines, palms, cypress and eucalyptus trees. It was primarily established as two large parks, Parque Alfonso XII. and Parque Reina Sofia which continue to attract thousands of visitors into the area every year - for hiking, picnicking in the countryside, for jogging and of course for walking. The municipality has always had a dense pine forest, but in the 8th century it was cut down for the construction of warships, without ever being replanted, that is until the sand dunes began to penetrate toward the northern part of the town of Guardamar in 1896, threatening many of the bordering houses and gardens. This is not the first time such a request has been made by the two councils. During a visit by members of the previous Valencian Government at the beginning of the year the Guardamar council said that they had been making such requests for the last seven years but without any success. They claimed that the upkeep, the cleaning and the clearing of the forest costs more than 500,000 euros every year and this is money that they cannot afford. The forests have needed urgent attention over the years and guardamarencos have had to use this money in the Pinada, rather than spending it on other needs of the municipality.

LOSING EUROPEAN RIGHTS The Spanish PM says he will try to fend off a secession drive by Catalonia region separatists by arguing that breaking away “means abandoning Europe”. Catalonia holds regional elections on September 27 in which separatists are trying to win a majority of representatives in parliament to push their independence drive forward. Mr Rajoy told reporters that his party will counter the effort by arguing Catalans would “lose the rights they have as Europeans and Spaniards”.
ARREST OVER AMERICAN DEATH Spanish police have arrested a man over the disappearance of an American woman missing since April from a famed Christian pilgrimage route in northern Spain, a Spanish security official said. The arrest came as about 300 Spanish officers searched the area where Denise Thiem, 41, was last seen on 5 April in the town of Astorga. Spanish TV showed footage of officers at a small apartment building taking away the suspect, a bearded man who appeared to be in his 30s. He was not identified.
ON YER BIKE Spanish police said they have found the bike worth around €12,000 that was stolen from an Australian rider in the Tour of Spain for sale in a second-hand shop for just €120 euros. Orihuela City Tour attracts 300 people Nearly three hundred people took part in the new theatrical and restaurant route in Orihuela last week. Led by the Councillor for Tourism, Sofia Alvarez, the tour took visitors, including many expats and visitors, around the most interesting historical sites in the city pointing out the very best eateries along the way.
IMPROVING SUPPORT FOR ORIHUELA COSTA
The mayor, Emilio , along with the Councillors forbeach and street cleaning and Urban Solid Waste, Sofia Alvarez and Noelia Grao, took stock of the various actions carried out by the Orihuela Costa council during the months of July and August. Among the most notable initiatives was the increase of ten local police officers, improvements in the accessibility of the steps leading down to the beaches with the installation of double rails, addition pressure for footbaths on local beaches, limiting the bathing area in Cala Captain ensuring greater security for bathers and improvements to the urban transport service. he Councillor for Beaches said that the comparative attendance and interventions by lifeguards on the coast was higher than
last year, "but there have not been any deaths, fortunately" . However, she said that a total of 1293 attendances had been made in comparison to the 1270 made in 2014. In addition, one of the beaches that recorded during the last two months was the Glea, followed by Alvarez said that 739 jellyfish stings had been recorded this year, compared to 692 last season. "Data from the season has been very positive, despite the increase in the number of people that lifeguards assisted, the attention they provided was first class," said Alvarez.. The Councillor for street cleaning and urban solid waste also spoke of improvements made in the area. "We have significantly improved housekeeping on the coast, despite the limited means at our disposal ." She continued "we have made great efforts to see this service is not
diminished especially with the the collection of green waste for which additional equipment has been leased resulting to July, in 20% more tons of cuttings from last year. We are currently still waiting for data to be produced showing results for August and September. The councillor said that the cleaning of beaches had also been improved with a much more efficient, as well as the manual cleaning and emptying bins. Grau said that in Aguamarina she had solved complaints from residents and swimmers who claimed that the area was dirty and full of algae, with it’s removal and cleaning. The mayor said that the council will continue in this line of maintenance with even more improvements to the cleaning of the Orihuela Costa.
"We exceeded our expectations with the number of people attending the event and we now want to improve the information provided by the guides as well as the quality of the audio equipment that we will need in future to cope with such large numbers” said Alvarez. And it was the first time since the Department of Tourism introduced this initiative that we were able to engage with restaurateurs able to provide special and cost effective menu’s for the occasion," added the councillor. Last Saturday’s guided tour was accompanied by the mayor Emilio Bascuñana, and the councillor Rafael Almagro. The tours will continue on a fortnightly basis, more information on which can be obtained from the Tourist Office located in the Orihuela Costa Town Hall in Playa Flamenca

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
It hasn’t quite got to this in Spain
What an Inconvenience! Witnessing a group of scantily-clad angels with wilting wings relieving themselves against a tree in Las Palmas during Carnival, brought home to me that the city has nowhere near enough public toilets. In fact, I would be hard pressed to name one, other than in the bus station and museum. When I say angels, I should point out that it was not the heavenly host who had lost total control of their bladders, but a group of revellers dressed as angels. I suspect that the problem was that it was 3.00 am, and they were full of the local brew, which was being freely distributed during the Parade. Now, I realise that this is not the nicest subject to be taking about, but the fact is that, unlike Paris, Spain has very few public toilets. Indeed, a recent news item made the point that in Madrid, which has over three million residents and over 10 million annual visitors, there are only 25 public toilets (that is, if they are working), leaving many desperate to relieve themselves elsewhere. The few public toilets that are available are often either not working or closed from 9.00pm, which is not a great deal of help, since that is time when most people are just thinking about going out for the evening. Of course, the idea is that the public should use facilities provided in bars and restaurants, which is fine if you stop and stay for yet another drink. Sadly, too many visits to bars for a drink and a pee mean the inevitable repeats itself before too long. Some cafe bars refuse entry to those only wanting to make use of their facilities, which leaves many - usually men - relieving themselves against any available tree, wall and street light. Sadly, strolling around Madrid and other cities late in the evening can be an unsettling experience, with an overpowering stench of urine on many street corners. Sometimes, of course, it is simply bad manners, because the offender cannot be bothered to find an alternative place to go to the toilet. Urinating in public is an offence in Spain, which can lead to a hefty fine. However, the police rarely impose this sanction.
Incidentally, this law also covers spitting in public, which is good to know. There we have it, if you are caught short in Spain, just head to the nearest cafe bar and, hopefully, they will take pity upon you without you having to resort to buying another drink. If you do not want another drink or do not have the cash, head to the local bus station, public library or museum, if it is open. You may even be fortunate enough to find one of those ‘coin in the slot’ loos, which are rare, but can be an interesting and challenging experience. However, do please read the instructions carefully first, which are available in a variety of languages. Alternatively, you could become a bus driver, which would entitle you to free use of the limited public facilities in Madrid. However, if you have a weak bladder, do avoid becoming a taxi driver, since there are no facilities provided and it can be a very long day. SOUR TASTE Officers from the Guardia Civil have arrested five men aged between 29 and 40, all residents of Roquetas de Mar (Almería), for stealing about 10 tons of lemons from a farm in San Miguel de Salinas. The operation was carried out by specialized teams from Almoradi who, in a dawn raid, found 2,600 kilos of lemons which were being transported the men in two vehicles. Further thefts were then discovered at a number of other farms including one in Pilar de la Horadada where lemons to the value of 8000 euros had been stolen.
DEAD CATS RECOVERED Members an animal protection group recovered the dead bodies of 9 cats on Saturday night in a rubbish container adjacent to the derelict chapel in the coastal suburb of El Mojon. The cats were taken to a local veterinary clinic in an effort to establish the cause of death. Animal shelters and Animal Associations in the Vega Baja have asked for the cooperation of both the Pilar council and local citizens so that brutalities like this cannot happen again.

New Air Traffic Control Walkout scheduled for Saturday The main Spanish air traffic controllers’ union USCA (Unión Sindical de Controladores Aéreos), announced through its web site, that new Air Traffic Control walkouts have been scheduled. The union’s national assembly approved the call to strike on September 26 and October 3, between 06.00 and 18.00 CET. This decision has been made because of the refusal to revoke the disciplinary action on the 61 employees as a consequence of the air space closure in 2010, after the judge in charge of the criminal case determined the absence of any kind of accountability, as well as the lack of any kind of agreement regarding the reinstatement of the ATCO unfairly dismissed by ENAIRE, who also refuse to carry out any negotiation with the ATCOs. Therefore USCA have been forced to call a new round of partial strikes following the union´s decision to suspend the industrial action in August so as not to harm the
Spanish tourism industry this summer. The union also requests the reinstatement of Marco Enriquez, the controller who was dismissed in Santiago de Compostela as a consequence of the same events. There were three legal actions taken against the Barcelona ACC ATCOs: the criminal trial, the administrative sanctions and the company disciplinary actions. The first two of have resulted in total absence of accountability against the ATCOs and have been dropped, however, inexplicably ENAIRE has continued to take disciplinary action against its ATCOs for the same events. USCA hopes that ENAIRE and the Government won´t infringe again the right to strike, as they did in June, imposing 70% minimum service, and 80% in July, discriminating against ATCOs from any other essential worker in Spain, and clearly against their colleagues all over Europe.
Government Minister Ana Pastor announcing details of the new route
Madrid to Hong Kong route unveiled The Minister for Public Works, Ana Pastor, has said that the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport was used by almost 31 million passengers in the first eight months of 2015, which is an increase of 12% on the same period of 2014. This upward trend matches the figures recorded at the airports comprising the AENA Network, which were used by some 140.2 million passengers between January and August (up 5.2%). "Spanish airports could well surpass the 200 million passenger mark in 2015", highlighted the Spanish minister (195.9 million in 2014). During her speech at the ceremony held to launch a new
route between Madrid and Hong Kong, Ana Pastor said that Madrid Airport connected to 181 destinations in 64 countries in 2014, while adding that the number of international passengers is posting a significant upward trend with monthly growth figures of 14.5%, 16.2% and 16.3% in June, July and August, respectively. Investments under the AENA Operational Plan at this airport in the period 2012-2015 amount to 479.4 million euros. In 2016, the same plan will be allocated a budget of
195.7 million euros. It is expected that this new route will carry approximately 113,000 passengers per year (return flights) and will lead to the creation of 300 jobs. Furthermore, it will increase direct connectivity with China; help diversify the role played by the Madrid airport - given that it is the leading European airport in terms of offering seats to Latin America - and expand its area of influence; and, finally, strengthen tourism and business ties.

Eduardo Dolon appointed PP Campaign Manager Eduardo Dolon has been appointed as the Campaign Manager for the Alicante Province People's Party for the general election. His appointment was confirmed by the Provincial Executive Committee last Monday.
Dolon said that the main focus of the talks centred on improved cooperation between the two localities in addressing infrastructure and communications, in "developing a regional vision of the issues that both towns have in common, as those which already exist and can be shared, not only with Guardamar, but with the rest of the region". Amongst the items discussed were the Segura river which both consider to be the backbone of the Vega Baja, the joint defense of the coastline together with other municipalities, rail and the AVE shuttle or road connection to El Altet airport.

NEW RENAULT MÉGANE: A DYNAMIC, DESIGN
W
ith its distinctive lighting signature and balanced proportions, New Mégane is first and foremost a Renault. It adopts the brand's design DNA with broad, sculpted shoulders and a front face incorporating the brand's new design identity, including a large, vertical Renault diamond. As a relative of Renault Talisman, New Mégane boasts a specific lighting signature at the front with, C-shaped headlamps whose surround continues into the bumper. At the rear, the new lighting signature, visible by both day and night, goes right across the car to increase the perceived width of the vehicle. "On the highly competitive market of compact saloons, it was vital that New Mégane should stand out right
from the first glance", says exterior designer Franck Le Gall. At 25mm lower in front with track 47mm wider in front and 39mm wider at the rear compared to the third generation Mégane, New Mégane sits squarely on the road. Its proportions are those of a sporty silhouette with a wheelbase 28mm longer and a shorter overhang. Franck goes on: "The precise, taut lines, which draw the whole design towards the front, are part of the side surfaces." In combination with the sculpted shoulders, these lines give New Mégane dynamism and character." Chromed elements emphasise the top of the belt line and enhance the grille, the side badges and door handles. The slim creases on the bonnet, combined with the chrome beading and side air scoops, strengthen the character of the front face. An exclusive GT version, available from launch New Mégane GT has a front bumper redesigned to express a more sporty personality. It incorporates a broader air intake and the new grill has a honeycomb design. At the rear, the design of New Mégane GT is underscored by two chromed tailpipes that echo the air scoops further to the front and frame a spoiler inspired by the world of F1. New Mégane GT has "Renaultsport" badging at the rear, on the wings and at the front. This sports version will be available with new "Iron Blue" paintwork, combined with "Dark Metal" touches at the front and on the body-coloured door mirrors to emphasise its affinity with the world of GT motoring. New Mégane GT also has 18-inch aluminium wheels developed especially for the model by Renaultsport.

Washed up bones thought to be human remains
One hundred days of new Orihuela Government Forensic officers from the Guardia Civil have said that the bones washed up in la cala de la Cueva on Sunday, tied together with a women’s belt, are thought to be human. The remains were discovered during the early afternoon by a diver who was exploring la Cala de la Tía Roqueta. He immediately called to his colleague who had remained on the beach, who in turn summoned the Underwater Operations Group of the Civil
Guard. The divers searched the cove, which is very close to where the discovery occurred and is regularly used as shelter by the homeless, but no additional finds were made. The bones were then handed over to the Coroners Department in Torrevieja where a detailed examination is currently being carried out. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, the body of an 84 year old man was found floating off-
shore at la Playa de Los Náufragos. The lifesaving Urgent Care Service (SAMU) and the Red Cross tried to revive him for nearly an hour, but he was declared dead at the scene. Family members said that the man, a native of Asturias, had been in poor health for some time having previously suffered a heart attack. The body was taken to the Forensic Anatomical Institute in Alicante to determine the causes of death.
African Migrants picked up off Almeria The Civil Guard has rescued 44 African immigrants who were aboard a rubber dinghy seven miles south of the island of Alborán (Almeria). The rescue was carried out by the Civil Guard crew of the maritime Service vessel Río Miño. The inflatable boat was carrying 30 men, 11 women and 3 babies all of whom are thought to be reasonably healthy following their ordeal. Following the arrest of the skipper the migrants were transferred to the flight deck of the Río Miño where they were provided with food and water, and health care by a detachment of nurses. They were all landed later in the day in the port of Almeria where they were turned over to the National Police.
Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana paraded a number of his councillors at a press conference in the Town Hall on Friday to mark the first 100 days of his new PP council. He said that his government team were working hard to fix the situation left by it’s predecessors and already they have had a number of successes which the press were able to see in a video which the council had produced. Amongst the items highlighted was the granting of emergency social assistance and the work on the Coast after the storm that caused so much damage to the beaches. He accepted that many people would have granted the new council a period of ‘settling in’ but now he would expect his team to work even harder than ever to run
their various offices. He said that he was currently drafting the budgets for 2016, concluding the negotiations on the agreement with Adif, the state owned company that manages the railway infrastructure, and preparing ordinances and subsidies that are intended to be approved in plenary before the end of this year. Among its objectives, Bascuñana prioritized issues that are currently pending including the construction of the Health Center in Rabaloche, the completion of the emergency center on the Orihuela Costa and the Civic Center in Aparecida. In closing the press conference the mayor said Orihuela said “I am very proud of my team and Orihuela now finally has a council that is serious and capable of working to achieve everything that our town needs. Ca f f eine a t nigh t r e se ts y our Inner Clock Everyone knows that caffeine can keep you awake, but a new study shows that the world's most popular drug can actually interfere with your body's internal sense of time. "The circadian clock is way beyond 'sleep and wake,' " says Kenneth Wright, a sleep and circadian physiologist at the University of Colorado. "The circadian clock is present in cells throughout our entire body. It's in your fat cells; it's in your muscle cells. It's in your liver, for example, as well as in your brain." And irregularities in the circadian clock have been linked to everything from obesity to cancer. Scientists have had hints that caffeine could alter cellular timekeeping, from studies in bread mold, green algae and sea snails. But Wright wanted to know if it did the same thing in people.
All new and existing clients will still receive the same continued level of exemplary support from the Golden Leaves / MMS team now and going forwards. Millie Munro has been working in a consultancy capacity throughout the last 12 months, helping smooth the business’s journey through this transitional period.
"To our surprise, no one had really tested this question," he says. He and his colleagues got volunteers to do a 49-day sleep study that involved testing saliva for melatonin, a sleep hormone that typically surges at night.
“We are extremely happy to have acquired the MMS business as it has had a reputation for providing a superior standard of client advice and after sales service to its extensive client base. An approach that is in direct harmony with our own well known and impeccable customer service standards. It is the first of many planned acquisitions by us as we move to further consolidate our business footprint in the expatriate marketplace” Barry Floyd – Managing Director of Golden Leaves International. The increased upturn in business throughout the Cost Blanca has necessitated that Golden Leaves International which now incorporated MMS has relocated to new and larger office premises in Javea, situated in the Arenal at Avenida De La Pla 123 – 125, Edificio Caribe, Locale 1 Javea 03730 Alicante. Tel. 0034 966 493 082 Golden Leaves International extend an open invitation to all our recent and any existing MMS clients to visit the new offices, have a cup of tea and meet their new support team in their new Javea home!
The study showed that the amount of caffeine found in a double espresso, if taken three hours before bedtime, delayed the melatonin surge by about 40 minutes, according to a report published online Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine. "We found that caffeine did indeed, in the evening, shift your clock later," Wright says. It was about half the effect the scientists noticed when they instead exposed the volunteers to bright light. "What we're seeing here now," Wright says, "is another way that caffeine impacts our physiology that we didn't know about before in humans." That kind of circadian shift could be enough to make people really struggle to get up at the right time the next day, says John O'Neill, a cell biologist at the Medical Research Council's laboratory of molecular biology, in Cambridge, U.K. Still, it's unclear whether drinking caffeine earlier in the day would mess up your internal clock in a similar way. "I think you could probably make a reasonable guess that caffeine consumed more than about five or six hours before habitual bedtime would not have this effect; but clearly it would need to be tested," says O'Neill. That's the kind of question the researchers hope to answer next. In general, he says, people really need to think about how and when they're using caffeine. "Leading a lifestyle where you're consistently not getting enough sleep, or where your body clock is continually out of sync with the natural world, is bad for you."

HOW TO USE YOUR AGM TO SAVE TIME AND MONEY Community Annual General Meetings can be frustratingly slow if you only meet once a year, for example one AGM to decide whether to ask for quotes for building work, next year´s AGM to decide between the quotes/companies. If you're need certain kinds of decisions made that can involve various (and possibly lengthy) procedures; such as understanding what is causing a particular building defect, getting quotes to compare for the right company, mediation with building work firms, asking your community to build an extension/alteration to your property, Town Hall's requirements for licences etc., then please contact Martinez de la Casa Architects to give assistance. We will do our very best to help at your AGM, with your President or community to get the ball rolling and get the results that you need faster and more efficiently. In order to save time and money, Martinez de la Casa Architects offers their on-site advice service for AGMs, when both the Architect and Surveyor will be present at the AGM and give faster solutions to all owners. The cost of our on-site advice plus survey (if needed) is 84,7 € IVA inc. We offer an instant on-site service for the following: • Building surveys and defect reporting of communal spaces: The
service includes SAME DAY AS AGM building inspection and defect reporting by the Architect, with on-site defects advice and appropriate plan of action. We offer all our experience to advice the AGM answering any questions you may have: costs, suggestions, procedures, information about licences etc. • Renovation of Habitation/Occupation Licences. Normally they have a validity of 5 years (second license for 10 years), so it's quite usual that licences run out of date for all the communities. We give on-site information on Town Hall procedures, cost of registration taxes and latest requirements. Martinez de la Casa Architects has experience in the renovation of over 1000 Habitation Licences. • Advice on licences or Retrospectives Licences: We offer advice at the AGM on licences to do works in communal spaces and we also inform the AGM about Retrospective Licences for extensions done by owners. We can also offer bulk prices for Retrospective Licences in case several owners want to proceed to contract our services as a group. Prices can drop very substantially and be approx. around 220€ plus IVA or even less if a group visit is organised (we do our best to discount as highly as possible). Our company has experience in hundreds of Retrospective Licences
and updating of Escrituras (Title Deeds) in all southern Spain, and we are happy to share our experiences and knowledge with your AGM or President to get things moving faster and in the right way. • Super group discounts also applies to our other services such as Energy performance Certificates, reducing the price from our usual 121€ (IVA inc) to as low as prices 79€ (IVA inc) or less, so why spend more than necessary? If your community or friends and neighbours can help to organise group bookings, even as a mix of services, EPCs, Occupation or Retrospective Licences, then we'll offer you the best rate achievable and the best service to match. Please visit our website to see our ever-growing list of Testimonials (+140) from happy clients, with special recommendations available from our top reputable Lawyers we have as clients. Martinez de la Casa Architects is one of the most prominent and reputable architecture practices in south eastern Spain. The number 1 company in EPC Certificates (121 € IVA inc), number 1 for Habitation Licences (from 98 €+ IVA) and Retrospective Licences (190 € + IVA pools; 270 € +IVA extensions). For all enquiries or to arrange an appointment please call 665 810 411 or visit www. martinezdelacasa.com and we look forward to hearing from you.

The other Men’s semi finished with exactly the same score this time it was 2013 champion Pete Bonsor who beat Colin Lindgren despite Colin leading 12 -10 after 13 ends. The 2013 and 2014 Ladies Champion Peta Rhodes was paired against Sandra Heath but this year Sandra proved just too strong winning 21 – 13, while in the other semi Ann Marie Stevenson met Monte Mar’s Ethel Finan and despite a little wobble after leading 19 -6 Ann Marie finally went through as a 21 -12 winner. The Mixed pairs semi’s saw Quesada’s Carol Broomfield and Nigel Baigent against Vistabella’s Maggie Furness and Richard Lee the game was really tight up to the 14th end with Maggie and Richard leading 16 – 15 but Carol and Nigel then took over to finish 21 – 16 winners, in the other game Judy Carrol and Derek Cooper of San Luis were pitted against Greenlands Marilyn Fryatt and Steve Cantley, Judy and Derek took control early on and ran out 25 – 13 winners.
Jackson Upsets Form Book as he brushes National Champion aside By Arthur Brown The Finals of the SABA Summer Knockout Competition were held at Quesada Bowls Club from Friday 11th to Sunday 13th September. 190 games were scheduled in the Knockout competition prior to the Semi Finals covering 6 different disciplines over a 3 and a half month period. Friday morning saw the Semi Finals of the Men’s Pairs and the Ladies Pairs. All the games were played in a very friendly spirit even though particularly in the two Men’s games the end results produced fairly conclusive wins for the victors. Quesada’s Pete Bonsor and Bill Pain took on John Malden and Keith Lowry representing San Luis, Pete and Bill hit top form and John and Keith were forced to concede after 15 ends. In the other Semi-final Colin Jackson and Colin Lindgren of San Luis took on Emerald Isles Frank Close and Jim Mulloy here again the two Colin’s took charge and Frank and Jim decided enough was enough after 16 ends. The two ladies games were much tighter for the first 11 ends but then in both cases the eventual winners took control and steamed ahead. The La Siesta pair of Beryl Styring and Irene Mangan were up against Vistabella’s Sandra Burrows and Ann Marie Stevenson after 11 ends Sandra & Ann Marie were leading 10 – 8 but lost their way to give Beryl and Irene a 19 – 10 victory. The other game was between Quesada’s Marianne Holtham and Carol Broomfield and Vistabella’s second pair of Beryl Regan and Jenny Bowman here again after 11 ends there was only one shot in it with Marianne and Carol 11 – 10 up but they then took control and finished 24 – 12 winners. The afternoon brought us the Semi-Finals of the Man’s and Ladies singles plus the Semi-Final of the Mixed Pairs. In the singles both the Men’s and Ladies games included the 2014 winners Bill Pain last year’s Men’s champion took on Colin Jackson who had in fact won the title himself in 2011 Colin took control from very early on and despite Bill’s efforts he was unable to prevent Colin winning 21 – 12. Saturday Morning brought us the Semi Finals of the Mixed Triples and once again last year’s winners were involved Monte Mar’s Geraldine and Gordon Fisher with Harry Dobson faced Quesada’s Jacquie Johnson, Peta Rhodes and John Muldoon, this was a really close game with only 2 shots in it going into the last end but Harry and the Fishers picked up another shot to win 22 – 19. The other match pitched Marianne Holtham, Bill Pain and Peter Bonsor against San Miguel’s Ros Stockell, Bob Nesbitt and Drew Gerrard and despite a mini revival from 17 – 2 down the San Miguel trio conceded at 9 -21 after 17 ends. Saturday afternoon brought the start of the finals, in the Mixed Triples final Monte Mar’s Geraldine and Gordon had to bring in Chris Merry in place of Harry Dobson who was not available to play. Quesada’s trio of Marianne, Bill and Pete got off to a flying start leading 14 – 0 after 7 ends and the game ended 21 – 6 in their favour after 15 ends. The Mixed Pairs Final was also played and was a much more competitive affair Judy and Derek led 13 -12 after 13 ends but could only add one more shot after this handing the title to Carol and Nigel to complete a successful afternoon for Quesada. The final day on Sunday was taken up with Men’s and Ladies Pairs in the Morning and Men’s and Ladies Singles in the Afternoon. The Men’s Pairs final was a repeat of last year’s final with the two Colin’s from San Luis taking on Bill and Pete from Quesada and what a cliff hanger it turned out to be, the two Colin’s stormed into 19 – 8 lead after 11 ends but Bill and Pete pegged them back to finish level at 19 all after 18 ends taking us into a tie break end which went to Bill and Pete, phew what a game. The Ladies game was not quite so tight with Beryl and Irene always in control beating Marianne and Carol by 25 – 13. The Singles Finals completed the three days in the Ladies final Ann Marie started well and led 12 – 8 after 11 ends but Sandra then came back to finally run out a 21 – 13 winner in the Men’s Final with most people expecting a closely fought game Colin Jackson shocked us with an outstanding performance which Pete Bonsor was unable to do anything about Colin winning by 21 shots to 7. Presentations were made by Steve Hibberd the CBBA Vice President. Competition organisers Arthur & Barbara Brown would like to thank Quesada Bowls Club for the Use of their Facilities, Sue Cooper and Margaret Smith for a successful raffle, our Semi Final markers, Veronica and Derek Sale and Di and Joe Riley who all also helped out as board turners for the finals plus our markers for the finals Neil and Sandra Burrows, our Umpires Brian Gardiner, Barry Norris and Nigel Baigent and last but not least everyone who took part from start to finish making the SABA Charlie Watkins with the Summer Knockout’s such a successful competition. Premier Twenty Trophy.
San Miguel fail to make the target on Fun Day By Pat McEwan Well done to SM trips team of Ros Stockell, Bob Nesbitt and Drew Gerrard for reaching the SABA semi finals played at Quesada. They had a good game against a home team, but the Quesada team won on the day. The score did not justify the game. The recent Target Bowls Fun Day was a great laugh, some of the targets looked easy, but proved to be more difficult than they looked!!. Winners were - top man Cliff Plaisted, top female Pat McEwan. This was followed by soup and sandwiches at Cheers Bar. Thanks Paul and Janet for a great day. Four San Miguel teams entered the Santa Pola Open this week. Two of which reached the semi
finals, unfortunately they had to play each other. Pat & Dave McEwan, Linda & Cliff Plaisted played against Gail & Fred Willshire, Ken Hope and Dave Greenland. Pat, Linda, Cliff and Dave won, and went into the final against Keith & June Jones, Angie Goodfellow and Colin Lingram, and lost. Fred,s team went into the playoffs for 3rd & 4th place against Country Bowls, and lost. Results were 1st San Luis, 2nd San Miguel, 3rd Country Bowls, 4th San Miguel. Well done all. Remember to check the diary for the Valencian Championships being played at San Miguel, worth watching!. San Miguel green is closed for play until Sunday 4th October, roll up 10.00 for 10.30am

Emerald Isle play host to Valencian Opening Ceremony
The undoubted sporting and social highlight of the Valencian bowling calendar, the Valencian Community Bowls Championship, got underway on Saturday evening with the Opening Ceremony at the Emerald Isle Bowls Club. It was attended by almost 300 bowlers from the 20 or so competing clubs, all of whom, and more, will contest the seven bowling disciplines at the Emerald Isle, La Siesta and San Miguel Bowls Clubs over the next two weeks. I can’t remember the last time that it rained on their parade and for the opening of the 2015 tournament we were once again blessed with bright sunshine as the competitors streamed out onto the magnificent green, as ever resplendent in their club colours. The trooping of the colour it was not, but for many
it just could have been, as everybody taking part in this remarkable spectacle marched onto the rink, bordered by the standards of many European Nations, and proud to be involved in this celebrated display. For many of course they had been through the ceremony many times before but there was a minority who were attending the event for the very first time. Watching the event from the stands were a number of guests, as President of the Emerald Isle, Graham Roberts, welcomed everyone to the venue. A man of few words Graham handed the green over to Pam Lockett who continued in the same vane prior to inviting everyone to stand for the Spanish National anthem. Graham and Competition Secretary Fred Trigwell
The ladies of San Miguel Bowls Club

were then asked to play the opening bowls of the tournament, the results of which suggested that neither will be a threat when the tournament does ge going. The gathering then retired to enjoy a buffet and drinks. The tournament proper got underway on Sunday with the early rounds of both the men’s singles and the ladies pairs at all three clubs, and with competition in all the disciplines taking place all this coming week there will be plenty of good standard

Home advantage not enough for Quesada Sponsored by Spanish Life Properties SUZIE COOPER WRITES ....... The finals of the S.A.B.A knockout competitions were held at Quesada last weekend & we were well represented in the semis & finals. In the Ladies Singles semi final Peta Rhodes lost out to Sandra Heath who went on to win the Final. In the Mens Singles we had 2 semi finalists with Bill Pain & Pete Bonsor. Bill lost to Colin Jackson in the semi then went on to play Pete in the Final. Colin was the eventual winner. Bill & Pete were again in action in the Mens Pairs. They came back from a deficit to force an extra end & take the title. Bill & Pete also featured in the Triples where with Marianne Holtham they took the win. Marianne with Carol Broomfield made it to the Ladies Pairs final but lost out at the final hurdle to Beryl Styring & Irene Mangan. Carol along with Nigel Baigent took the honours in the Mixed Pairs Final. All in all a very good result for the Quesada players. This week saw the start of the Valencian Championships. We wish all our entrants good luck.

Charlie upsets the Quesada applecart buggy Last Wednesday the Society travelled south to the Mar Menor to play the popular Mar Menor golf course. The course was in very condition and the weather hot & sunny with a breeze getting up in the afternoon. There was a good turn-out of 26 keen and eager golfers. The competition was an individual Stableford with 2 divisions. The highlight of the day involved a ¨buggy”. Charlie Wallace was behind the wheel close to a bunker and one of his playing partners Gordon McGregor asked him to move it as it was in the line of his shot into the green. Charlie reversed it towards the bunker and Gordon shouted “hit the brakes”. Charlie hit the brakes but the buggy kept on moving and down a steep bank into the bunker, with Charlie upright in the buggy holding on tightly to the steering wheel. The buggy toppled over onto its side and Charlie got out unscathed. The four Scotsmen in the four-ball then lifted the buggy back onto its wheels and in the process the seat came away and Ronnie Spiers got his hand trapped. See the plasters on his hand on the photo.
Charlie may have had a memory lapse and thought he was behind the wheel of a beach buggy and not a golf buggy. If it had been videoed it would have gone viral on U Tube. The winner was the Italian Stallion Nick Capasso with the highest points score for a long time coming in with 41 points. In 2nd place was Welshman Mike Thomas with a very good score of 35 points. In 3rd place on C/B was scouser big Roy Kavanagh. In the Silver division the winner was Mike Thomas´s better half Glenys Thomas with an excellent 34 points. In second place with 33 points was young Trevor Hobbs with 33 points who just pipped Sergio Spiers on C/B. If Sergio hadn´t injured his hand he may have returned with a sensational score. We will never know. The “Nearest the Pin” winners were Nick Capasso, Terry Rogers, Darryll Wright, Chris Nield and Bert “Put on your dancing shoes” Morl with two. The best guest was Brian Shaw. In the annual knock-out Sergio Spiers beat fellow Scotsman Gordon McGregor. The 2´s pot was shared by 2 players Nick Capasso and Sergio

We started the week on Monday with a Change Partners where each member of a 4 man team partners each of the other players for 6 holes with the best score of the pairing counting towards the teams final score. I was lucky enough to be part of the winning team and despite scoring 14 pts on the first 6 holes only 6 of those scored on holes 1 and 6 appeared on the card as my partner Rod scored 12 points on holes 2 to 5. With Olga scoring a birdie 2 on the 14 th and Reg contributing a few 3 pointers all members of the team played extremely well to record an exceptional total of 90 pts to win by 7 pts. The winning team were Olga Douglas, Reg Akehurst, Rod Doel and Mike Chapman. On Wednesday we played our usual individual stableford competition and the stand out performance came from El Presidente Doug Wright who at long last returned to form with a superb 40 pts to win Category One by 5 pts. It was noted that this performance came in the absence of his buggy partner
and whilst in the company of two of our lady players supporting him throughout the round. It was a close run thing between the other members in a round that was played in superb conditions for golf. The final standings were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Doug Wright 40 pts 2nd Olga Douglas 35 pts 3rd Brian Townend 34 pts Cat 2. 1st Mike Chapman 35 pts 2nd Reg Akehurst 34 pts 3rd Barry Holtham 32 pts 2's Club: Alan Douglas, Doug Wright, Terry Cullen, Brian Dent and Barry Holtham Unfortunately the planned Joker Stableford scheduled for Friday was postponed and replaced by a 4 ball Texas Scramble which is enjoyed by some but loathed by others. There was a somewhat surprise result as the two fancied teams containing the big hitters came up short with first place being taken by the team of Alan and Joyce McClusky, Marleen Billen and Alan Douglas with a good score of 60.2.

Late r eor g for El Plantio Yellow Ball With temperatures slowly returning to an acceptable level making the golf far more comfortable and enjoyable, the Society met for its usual Tuesday Competition, this week we had a Yellow ball comp, everything started out well with the preselection of 5 four ball teams as we had 20 players. However as we called out the teams just before going out one member said that he hadn't heard his name called, we quickly found out why, he had forgotten to put his name on the sheet, so we had a frantic 10 minutes reorganizing the teams into 7 teams of 3. The course is looking quite good at the moment, with the greens having been hollow-tined a few weeks ago and the recent rain contributing to make the course very enjoyable. Two visitors joined us today, Phil Ball & Peter Bowdery, the latter who was over for a visit from Canada, and given the results I think it is safe to say
they thoroughly enjoyed themselves, well played lads. The results this week: Nearest the pin, hole 1 Ben Gadd, hole 6 John O'Brien, 3rd place: Ray Housley, Mel Hope & Mike Davies with 127 pts 2nd place: Martin Rickman, Phil Ball & Peter Bowdrey with 130 pts 1st place: John O'Brien, Lyn Young & Graham Blakeway with 135 pts The next competition is on Tuesday 22nd September at El Plantio. Put your name on the list in the club-house by Sunday, if you would like to play. Please be there by 8:30 as we tee off at 9:00am. New members and visitors are always welcome to join the Society, a special membership price is available for this joining the Society and you can choose to join the par 3 course only or both courses as the Society plays on both. Spiers. After the game, the golfers returned to the Quesada Country Club for the presentations and a well earned drink or two and a hot and cold buffet kindly laid on by mine hosts. The next game is the eagerly awaited Away Day

The clubhouse is of a Mediterranean style incorporating 1,500m2 located close to the 1st and 10th tees and adjacent to the driving range and other practice facilities, and comprises the UNiK CAFÉ and THE GLASS BAR overlooking the 18th green, the golf shop and locker rooms. MATTHEWS ROMPS TO ‘JOHN GOODWIN SHIELD’ WIN Its always a pleasure to visit the 400 hectare grounds of Las Colinas, the Hub´s latest Grand Prix excursion. The 36 player turnout was a fitting tribute for the PJ´s Rentacar sponsored “John Goodwin Shield” competition. John, a former business partner of Alison and Trevor Scammell, sadly passed away in early 2014. He undoubtedly would have been proud to learn his friends and business associates have remembered the larger than life character in such a way. Last year´s winner Rob Wheeler couldn’t repeat his 2014 victory, the winner Steve Matthews, recording a healthy 37 points, three points clear of the field. Best front 9 with 21 points was Dod Frieslick, including consecutive birdies on the short par 3, 7th and the par 4, 8th both 4 pointers. The Scotsman couldn’t maintain the pace however and “faded”, returning 16 points on the back 9. Best incoming 9 came from a one handicapper Kev Harmison, amassing a useful 20 points but taking 4 points from the stroke index one 11th par 5 his only shot hole with a six foot birdie putt. Magnificent effort. As usual everyone entered the 2´s competition and amazingly there were seven, 2 on the 5th, 2 more on the 7th, one on the 10th and 14th, the last a tremendous 3 wood on the 247 yard 17th, followed by a casual 15 foot putt from Ron Temple playing off 9. The Hub´s next outing is at Roda on Thursday 24th September, places are limited but still available. Register at the Hub (Villamartin). Winners “Photo Lounge” N.T.P. Happy Days ‘old guard’ dominate Font del Llop By Lubbertus What a difference a week makes; the last two competitions saw a flood of new names on the score card, but this week was dominated by the old faithful members. Maybe it’s the course at Font Del Llop being in a valley with numerous water courses, ponds and bunkers that brings out the best in these old timers, or perhaps it’s just that it is a great course to enjoy the open air and have fun together with other friends. Whatever the reason the individual scores were very impressive with several players having their name on the scorecard several times. The society played a Pairs Butterball competition which was won by Graham Davies (who also won one of the 2’s) and Dave Naylor (who also won achieved nearest the pin at hole 17 AND one of the 2’s) on 47 points. Very close behind with 46 points was Graham Riley and Kedrick Rhodes. A little way behind them was Dale Wood and Dave Wright on 43 points with Andy Shuttle and Kevin Barratt in fourth
place on count back, also with 43 points. However, Kevin Barratt redeemed himself with a nearest the pin at hole 12, which is over several water features, AND two 2’s. Nearest the pin at hole 3 went to Simon Sharples who also achieved a 2’s win. Hole 8 went to Steve Naish plus a 2’s win, with hole 16 going to Dave Eadington. Kevin Wenn achieved two 2’s wins. The society then decamped to their spiritual 19th hole at the Marinasol Restaurant at Cabo Roig where Steve and Maz provided the players with a welcome buffet. The Society’s next match will be at the Roda Golf Course, a little earlier than usual at 10.00am on 29th September 2015. New members or just those seeking more information about a very welcoming golf society where friendship is as important as golf, should contact Steve Dixon, or any of the staff, at the Marinasol Restaurant at Cabo Roig. All comers of all levels are very welcome.
ORANGE TREE TAKE RECORD FIELD TO SAURINES Once again this newly formed golf society met to play its fortnightly society event. This week we had our biggest ever turn out of members and guests just showing that this little friendly golf society is going from strength to strength. Thank you all for making this society one of the best within Cabo Roig. On arrival at the course we were once again met with lovely weather, even though bad weather was forecasted and in fact did arrive but after we had finished, thus the golfing gods have been shining on us this year. Plus we were once again made very welcome by the staff of one of the best courses on the Costa, unfortunately the green at this course at the moment are slow and distracts from what is a wonderful course generally. Although saying this thanks must still go to the course staff for making the day go smoothly. This time around with the high number of players we decided to play an individual stableford competition. We all returned back to our home base, The Orange Tree Bar and Restaurant in Cabo Roig for the presentation and lovely snacks and drinks. Thanks to Chris, Nigel, Lilly, Brian, Jo, Michelle, Hannah, Viv, Keva, Gareth, Dean, Georgie and Shaun for providing these and the wonderful welcome also. Winners of this weeks event was Andy Shuttle with 38 points on countback, 2nd Simon Sharples and 3rd Roger Lyles with 34pts.
NTP´s went to Simon Sharples (6th), James Hunter (10th), Simon Sharples (14th) and Trevor Rollason (18th). Nobody was more surprised than himself. Simon Sharples made it a special day by also recording 2 two´s making his night very merry with all the wine won. Apologies, but due to the summer months the last society results were never recorded, so to rectify this the winners for Tuesday 25th August were 1st Stuart Robertson and Simon Sharples, 2nd Steve Cardwell and James Hunter, 3rd Nigel Cawthra and Ledric Rhodes. NTP´s went to Roger Lyles and Kedric Rhodes. The next Orange Tree Golf Society event is on the 22nd September. All golfers of any standard are welcome to join us on that day and will be made most welcome into the society. We pay a standard fee of €45 for the game and buggy and collect an additional €2 for prizes. Names can either be placed on the golfers notice board with the restaurant or by phoning the Orange Tree on 965 32 3235 or emailing on orangetree@Hotmail.es All the society dates and venues for 2015 and now also 2016 can be found on the website www.orangetree-caboroig.com All players please meet at The Orange Tree bar and restaurant on the Monday night prior between 5 - 6pm to pay your fee plus know the competition and draw.

Lewis repays Pedreño’s confidence with opening goal Much was expected of both these teams prior to the start of the season but the only sure thing going into Sunday evening’s encounter was that neither of them had won. As such both sides were fully aware that defeat would consign the loser to the basement of div 3. Although Torry were encouraged by the hard fought midweek draw at Villarreal, manager Pedreño knew that nothing less than a decent victory was acceptable to continue the recovery process. The previous match between these 2 clubs last January, resulted in an excellent 4-2 away triumph for Torry, and more of the spirit shown in that encounter was required if their winless start to the season was to be rectified. And that was certainly what we seemed to get as Torry were quickly out of the blocks. Indeed with a more sympathetic referee they could have had a penalty within the opening seconds when Cesar was brought down in the box. However Snr López De La Oliva waved the protestations away showing even at this early stage his no nonsense approach. After a number of lethargic performances Pedreño decided to leave Juanfran and
Juanma on the bench, replacing them with the much busier styles of Burguillos and Lewis and his faith in the player he previously managed at Horadada was repaid when the young Brit found the back of
CD Torrevieja ..............2 Muro CF........................0
the net on 8 minutes. A simple tap in it might have been but it was as important a goal as any the young striker has scored and it could just be the one that kick started the turn around that their season needed. Lewis was again involved on 23 minutes when he tried to lob Edu in the Muro goal to set up Torry’s second but the keeper was a couple of yards outside the box earning a straight red and reducing his side to ten. The visitors just could not suppress Torrevieja’s cutting edge or endeavour, and they were a further goal behind five
minutes later thanks to Carrasco. A ball pulled back from the line by Luis Carlos saw the veteran net from 10 yards to extend the Torry lead by 2-0. The same player should have added to his tally just prior to the break but with the hard work done he hung onto the ball just a few seconds too long and a good opportunity went begging with the interval in sight. We were all hoping for more of the same when the 2nd half got underway and when Muro were reduced to 9 men after Alex Torrella got his marching orders we really should have seen a hatful. Luis Carlos and man of the match Lewis both went close, the latter on more than one occasion, and even Juanfran and Vicente Boix had opportunities to get onto the scoresheet, but despite the home side’s dominance the Muro defence stood firm and, with goalkeeper Oscar reduced to a spectator for virtually all of the 2nd period, Torry had to settle for just the two when it really should have been more. Oscar might just be slightly busier next weekend with Torry travelling to local rivals Novelda. Details of that game will be published on the club website.

That’s more like it! VILLARREAL 'C' 0
CD TORREVIEJA 0 By Steve Hibberd
When I first got a glimpse of last Wednesday’s Torry team sheet, my immediate reaction was, 'you are having a laugh!'. But no, manager Pedreno was deadly serious in his attempt at shock and awe tactics, presumably designed at getting a positive reaction from unacceptable team performances so far. Well it worked, in as much as a first clean sheet was achieved, a good away point was earned, and 2 goals were scored during normal time (shame they were deemed illegal, but hey, the thought was there!). A starting 11 void of Jorge, Oscar, Lewis, Sanchez and Burguillos (all on the bench), plus Adrian and Brani (dropped completely), illustrated that the boss meant business. Having said all that, Torry were completely outplayed during the first 45 mins, a half in which the totally inept Juanma, or Granma, as the mad Irishman (JS) has affectionately christened him, was plain awful, and he wasn't alone. The other Juan, Fran, couldn't stay onside to save his life, leaving hosts keeper Jomo without having to make a save of any note. Meanwhile his opposite number Miguel, making his Torry debut, was kept busy, saving well from Ramon, before Cerem twice shot inches wide of the post. Whether or not Pedreno employed the hairdryer treatment at half time I don't know, but it certainly had the desired effect. Miguel continued where he left off, making an important stop on 53 mins, before Torry came into their own. Juanfran had the ball in the net on the hour mark, harshly adjudged to have handled, although it appeared a defender was the culprit, then from next attack, Cesar 'scored', but he too had his effort chalked off, this time for offside. Late on, both Sanchez and Carrasco deserved better, when their long range efforts went unrewarded, as Pedreno's men at long last, looked more like the Torry we know and love.

Autumn serie s mo v ed t o Dr ain a t Mer cadona This week the Carp-R-Us anglers fished the town section of the River Segura in Murcia city centre. This was Round two of the Clubs Autumn series of matches. The carp that were caught were very small, and it seems this section of the river will still take time to reach its full potential. The results of the match are as follows: In first place was Andy Foden with 3.24kg, second was Dave Bacon with 2.12 kg, third was Tom Marshall with 1.48kg and in fourth place Steve Fell with 1.24kg. The next match on September 24th was to have been fished on the Benijofar stretch of the River Segura, but as there are so few swims available, it has been rescheduled to the Eden canal all being well there. The next of our Quiz nights will be on Tuesday the 29th of
September starting at 7.30pm. The cost is 1 Euro per person and teams of up to 6 can take part. Our next Club meeting will be on Sunday the 4th of October with the Committee at 10.30 followed by the General meeting at 11.00am.
