CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE established a close kinship with many of those who live around him. Not one to sit about, Andrew enjoys an active life, much of which centres around his main hobby, which is cycling. After taking part in a number of Etapes and time trials in the UK he thought it was time to tackle Spain, but he wanted to make something rather more of his efforts, so, why not combine a long ride with a fundraising drive, he thought, which is when he hit on the idea of cycling the 1000 kilometres from Santander to his holiday home in San Pedro. Of course there was no way he was going to attempt such a distance on his own, particularly in a country where they drive on the wrong side of the road, so, with the idea firmly planted in his mind Andrew enlisted the help of Michael, his brother, and friends, Alistair Cathcart and Martin Bain. Whilst training for the journey in the Scottish Highlands, often covering 40 or 50 miles in a day, and having previously used the local knowledge of San Pedro neighbour Brian Tanner to determine the local charities that would benefit, the four set about the task of raising sponsorship and fundraising in Scotland. Brian took on the job in and around San Pedro with very good results and with Andrew raising over £2000 in the UK the team got off to an encouraging start. Together with support driver, Amy Cassels, the party set off from Glasgow on Wednesday 16th September for their drive through the UK to catch the ferry to France on the following morning. This allowed the party both Thursday and Friday to get to Santander with a view of starting their cycle on the Saturday morning. Happily the attempt got underway on time but it was not too long before the group realised, that even at such an early stage, they were facing the two toughest days of their route as they quickly came to understand what ‘hill climbing’ really did mean. With an overnight stop scheduled at the end of each day’s riding the group opted to find hostels rather than pursue the original plan of camping, a decision that they very soon came to appreciate, particularly on the Monday evening when they were grateful for some very good and healthy food in a lovely hotel - this, and a comfy bed for the night, gave them the rest that they needed to carry on the following day. None of the four cyclists had ever attempted a route quite so long but they were experienced

ALMOST THERE. The final few yards enough to know that, with the heat of the Spanish sunshine, nutrition, rehydration and good sleep would be key to completing the route by the following Saturday. The journey for the most part went very well but there was the occasional moment which the team will most certainly remember; an inappropriate diversion by Andrew and Alistair saw the pair cycling the wrong way on a motorway against the traffic. Fortunately there were no police about, unlike the previous day when Andrew was caught using his phone whilst pedalling away. He was stopped by a Guardia Motorcycle cop who promptly issued him with a €40 fine. And so on Saturday afternoon, when the intrepid cyclists finally pulled in to C/Galua San Pedro del Pinatar at the end of a very worthwhile ride. Arriving almost an hour early they caught their welcoming party on the hop, but with Andrew’s partner Alison on lookout she quickly raised the alarm and they were greeted by

Andrew’s response. “It was a thoroughly worthwhile and enjoyable experience and we are delighted to have raised a good sum of money which we will shortly be donating to local charities.” The important thing now of course is collecting the prom-

ised sponsorship for the three very worthy charities, AMMA, local Alzheimer suffers, AIDEMAR, for disabled young adults and the SAMARITANS, who provide a very worthwhile listening ear, all of whom do an excellent job for the communities here in Spain.

Local man killed in Alpine air tragedy

The crash site in Austria

Peter on a recent excursion to San Javier Airbase with The Royal British Legion Briton Peter Harper, a long time resident of Quesada, was tragically killed when both he and his co pilot crashed in heavy turbulence last week as they were flying over the Alps not far from Salzburg. Neither the Sting light aircraft in which they were travelling, nor their bodies, was discovered for two days until it was spotted last Saturday morning by a rescue helicopter after a search had been mounted by Austrian Police. It was discovered at approximately 4,921 feet above sea level which is why it took so long to find. The Czechoslovakian aircraft had just undergone a biennial factory servicing at Breclav in the Czech Republic, from where it had just been picked up by the two owners, both experienced pilots. They were on the first leg of their journey back to Sucina Airfield when the aircraft crashed. Mathias Gr端nwald, a commander of the local

Flachau police, said that 76 year old Peter had lost control of the plane which seemed to have crashed almost vertically at high speed. Both he and his 79 year old co pilot, who jointly owned the aircraft, were killed instantly. The aircraft was identified as a Sting TL 2000, an ultralight aircraft used mainly by leisure flyers. Eyewitnesses came forward to describe how they had seen the doomed aircraft in a tailspin shortly before it hit into the ground. Police said at the time the aircraft ran into a strong turbulence caused by the 'Foehn' - the warm Alpine wind similar to the Mistral in southern France which creates hazardous flying conditions in an instant. Authorities said that passports in the aircraft led to the identities of the men being established. A criminal probe involving police and the Austrian air accident authorities is now underway.

Main Parties ahead Spain's mainstream left and right political parties held a narrow lead over anti-austerity party Podemos, according to a poll published in El Pais on Monday, just three months before a general election expected in December. The Socialists (PSOE) topped the Metroscopia poll, with 24.6 percent of respondents saying they would vote for the party if the elections were held tomorrow, closely followed by the ruling People's Party (PP), with 23.4 percent of the vote. Podemos, lead by political scientist Pablo Iglesias, has surged in opinion polls since its creation last year as voters seek an alternative to traditional parties after an economic crisis left one in four workers out of job. Iglesias' party would win 18.6 percent of the vote, up from 18.1 percent a month earlier, while business-friendly upstart Ciudadanos, which started a national campaign only in January, would take 16.1 percent, the poll showed.

Parents asked "that our elected representatives do not play politics with children aged three to eleven years”, saying that it is totally unacceptable that young Children are not entitled to a school bus. At the same time the president of Ampa complained that the local police sometimes cannot attend the school at the start and the end of the school day because of other commitments and without a single sign in the street warning of the existence of the school those drivers who are not from the local area are totally unaware of the existence of the school. The demonstration was also attended by representatives of both the PSOE and Cambiemos including opposition councillor María Zafra. Cllr Alvarez said that the Orihuela Government are clearly concerned about the matter and they are making strong representations to the Provincial Education Authority to have these new rules changed.

PSOE Denounce Los Dolses Wall as Unsafe

ALVAREZ JOINS IN SCHOOL BUS DEMO

C

ouncillor for Foreign residents, Sofia Alvarez, joined mothers, fathers and members of the Association of Parents of the college of Los Dolses on Wednesday as they demonstrated against the loss of 50% of their school transport fleet. Following their withdrawal at the start of the new school year, 2 of the 4 school buses allocated to the Los Dolses school are no longer available to the children many of whom will now have to endure lengthy walks with their parents for up to four times a day. The new regulations stipulate that a child must live at least 3km from the school before it is entitles to school transport, how-

ever the distance is measured in a straight line which actually pushes the boundary out much further. "Many small children have to cross many roads to get to the school, it is intolerable that the Department has not provided them with the transportation they need," said the municipal official. She explained that the change in regulations affecting school transport has not come from the town hall, but from the Ministry of Education and the local education authorities were no more aware of them than the parents. The following day there were even more demonstrations by parents, this time outside la Colegio Público los Dolses and IES Playa

Flamenca in Calle Nicolas de bussi where they were far more voval as well as being equipped with many more banners which they waved vigorously to passing motorists. “In a street which serves as a through road to Villamartin there are already far too many vehicles passing along,” said the president of the Association of Parents, Txomin Angós, “which have now been added to parents who are having to drive their children to school as a result of the slashing of the bus service. The pavement is far too narrow, just a meter wide, on which they have to crowd together to avoid being hit by cars using the roundabout to turn back down the street while they wait for the school gates to open.”

The PSOE has denounced the poor state of the wall in the public park which is situated in la calle Algarrobo in Los Dolses. The wall is made up of many hundreds of individually quarried stones which are all fixed on top of each other, and which a spokesman from the PSOE says are now beginning to shift and in danger of falling down. He demands that the Orihuela Council takes immediate action to resolve the problem before there is serious injury to a passerby. In the same denuncia the party have also complained to the council about the lack of waste containers, the accumulation of green waste on the pavements, which they say can remain there for many days, and the lack of cleanliness in the general area.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

A Bit of a Do Have you noticed how many British youngsters, as well as the ‘not so young’, like to spend a few days soaked in a muddy field listening to their favourite bands nowadays? It is a pastime that has never really appealed to me since I am not that fond of tents, muddy fields, or having my eardrums shattered. However, I do understand something of the magical atmosphere that draws crowds to such well-established events as Glastonbury and many others that pop up throughout the year in the UK. I guess it is one of those things that you are supposed to do and say you enjoy, although at the time you really wish you had access to a hot bath and decent meal. Of course, the Spanish have been enjoying festivals and fiestas for years, and can celebrate with a vengeance. Frankly, you name it and there is a patron saint, a fiesta or an event that you can use as an excuse to dress up, drink too much and generally have a good time whilst celebrating the wine harvest, the tomato crop or really anything that comes to mind. One really good fun evening is the wine fiesta at Jumilla where one of the highlights over the weekend is the ‘Gran Cabalgata del Vino’ where hundreds of barrels of locally produced wine are poured over the participants. Basically, the tradition is that you turn up wearing white, and you end the evening looking something like a squashed tomato. Showers are kindly provided by the organisers. Mind you, although it is a wine festival, I am not sure that it shows the local brew

in a particularly good light if it is only good enough to pour over the revellers. Just imagine doing that with a good Rioja! Another bit of harmless fun is the ‘Garachio Tyre Burning Fiesta’, which comes courtesy of the Canary Island of Tenerife. Although it is a good headline grabbing title, it has more to do with dried corncobs soaked in petrol, balls of sackcloth, pineapples in wooden barrels, as well as burning tyres. This particular event re-enacts the fury of the Trevejo Volcano that destroyed the port of Garachio in 1706. Fireworks and glowing balls rolling down the slope help to recreate the effect of a The Gran Cabalgata of wine volcanic eruption. Apparently, it which is held in Jumilla is an amazing sight, but does very little to reduce levels of global CO2 emissions. Of course, among all the weird and loony events are those that glorify cruelty to the extreme, including bull running where terrified animals are let loose through some Spanish village streets with ‘brave young men’ running in front them, displaying their ‘bravery and prowess’ to all those who are prepared to witness this appalling act of cruelty. Some would say, fortunately, nine human participants have been gored to death so far this year, and I certainly find it hard to find sympathy for any of them. On a lighter note, one of my favourites is the White Party that is popular at the beginning of Lent, and particularly on the Island of La Palma, although it has now sneaked into the party agenda for a num-

ber of other towns too. At this party, you turn up in white clothes, and unlike the Wine Festival, go home looking even whiter! You just have prepared to be doused in white powder, be it flour or talcum, to have a really good time. Torrevieja launches Municipal Housing Service The new Municipal Housing Office (OMV) will open for business today, Monday 28 September, on the premises of the Department of Urbanismo. The announcement was made last week by councillors Fanny Serrano (PSOE) and Victor Ferrández (EUPV).

already been put in place following these meetings. The councillor said the next target will be to the creation of the Municipal Park Housing, a small pool of five municipally owned properties that can be used to provide accommodation in cases of emergency. There have also been initial contacts with banks to explore ways of acquiring housing at discounted prices to be used as municipal assets, and on 1st October there will be a further meeting with the EIGE which will be held to discuss the public properties held by the Generalitat in Torrevieja and to study their transfer.

The establishment of the OMV in Torrevieja was one of the 10 major points that the new council promised to fulfil in its pre election manifesto last May.

The launch of this office confirmed that "the right to housing is a fundamental objective for the current government team, and one of our priority commitments" said Ferrández who explained the main functions of the office, one of which will be to end to evictions in Torrevieja. The staff will also be required to act as mediators between financial institutions, builders and developers with the families that are affected by a

mortgage or rent that they are unable to afford, provided that the contracts were not made between individuals. The office will accommodate departments from Housing, Social Welfare and Heritage and Citizenship. It will be staffed by four council employees who will also be assisted by the three councilors heading the individual departments. The office will be open to the public Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 1pm. It will be located in the Town Hall on the first floor of the Planning Department. Ferrandez also explained that they have already held meetings with anti eviction platforms and will be implementing many of their concerns and proposals. The Councillor for Housing, Fanny Serrano said that it was "amazing" that Torrevieja, a city with more than 100,000 inhabitants and more than 160,000 homes , does not have any municipal housing, which she described as "the total irresponsibility of 27 years of misgovernment" She confirmed that staff from the planning department are preparing a report which will assess exactly what municipally owned land there is in Torrevieja that could be put to suitable use in support of the new office. She said that she hoped to give details next week.

Alvarez holds Open House The Councillor for International Residents, Sofia Alvarez, met with over a hundred foreign residents of the Orihuela Costa last week, to learn firsthand of their needs and

demands as well as to appraise them of the achievements and the plans she has put in place during her first one hundred days of office.

She said that the Costa’s residents need to be more involved in the area and it was her hope that she could help them to do so.

The Councillor said that she will be holding these meetings on a monthly basis

She will be organising regular municipal activities, many of them social, and sincerely hoped that they would pass on the word to their colleagues and friends. “Already,” she explained, “we have established a municipal group that will help with the collation and reporting of pruning and cleaning information in the area. Their input will help me and the municipal cleaning services to be much more aware of the areas in which we need to concentrate our efforts,” she said. The councillor also said that these meetings will be held on a monthly basis, at which she hopes always to be accompanied by another member of the government team, and where, as well as discussing municipal and resident concerns she will also announce and promote the upcoming activities that will help to further integrate the area’s internat io na l r es i dents.

Fear of reprisals Gardaí are concerned about the possibility of retaliation following the murder of Irish criminal Gary Hutch in Spain. The 34-year-old from Champions Avenue, in Dublin's north innercity, died after he was chased and shot a number of times by a masked gunman at an apartment complex in Miraflores on the Costa del Sol at around 11.30am last Thursday. Gardaí are liaising with Spanish authorities and believe the murder is connected to a disagreement with a criminal gang.

All new Astra in UK Vauxhall showrooms from October T

he new Astra is now on sale, with first cars arriving in Vauxhall showrooms this October after its global debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show. One of the UK’s top-selling and best-loved cars, Astra is a household name for British car buyers with almost three million sold in the UK over the last 36 years, including 50,000 in the last 12 months. More than 25 per cent of British motorists have either owned or driven an Astra, so reaction to a new model will always be felt across the market. New Astra is based on an all-new lightweight vehicle architecture with a new design, powertrains and technology, the Astra is built at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port manufacturing plant in Cheshire. It is the lead plant for the new model. Accounting for 12 per cent of C-Segment sales, key rivals in this fiercely competitive sector include the Ford Focus and the Volkswagen Golf. The Astra has a very diverse customer profile appealing to people from all areas of society, male and female, young and old. The retail/fleet split is 70:30 in favour of company car drivers and fleet decision-makers. Depending on the model and trim level it is up to 200kg lighter than its predecessor. The completely new vehicle architecture plays a major role in the weight reduction. Every component was checked for compact design and lightweight materials. The body shell weight alone was reduced by 20 per cent from 357kg to 280kg. Additional, chassis-related measures resulted in a further 50kg weight loss. The Los Infiernos Perrera is a small dog refuge located in the municipality of Torre Pacheco 10 mins from San Javier Airport and has the mission to receive, care for and re-home abandoned/abused dogs.

It is assisted in this by the charity Caminando Con Ellos (registered with Murcia council nÂş G30881924) and a support group (L.I.P.S) who are multinational volunteers that help in the running of the pound as well as re-homing and fund raising activities. Unsurprisingly there is a continual flow of dogs and L.I.P.S works hard to find suitable homes for all of them in Spain and across the rest of Europe. However until each dog leaves the costs associated with its feeding, medication and veterinary treatment are high so the group is always desperate to raise additional funds. With this aim nine of us volunteers will be doing a freefall skydive on the 11th Oct. at the SkydiveMurcia centre in Ontur near Hellin to raise as much money as possible through sponsorship. Each volunteer is paying for their own skydive so all of the money donated will be used to care for the dogs some of whom can be seen on Facebook by searching for Los Infiernos Perrera Supporters We would of course be very grateful to receive additional sponsorship which can be done by emailing: losinfiernosdogs@hotmail.com Or anyone interested can use either this email address or the Facebook page to follow our activities or arrange a visit to the refuge.

Stick with Spain Catalonia should stick with Spain and avoid disaster, Spain's foreign minister said on Wednesday, becoming the only member of Madrid's centre-right government to debate on television with a secessionist adversary on the heated topic of Catalan independence. The fact that Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo had agreed to participate in the televised debate at all was in itself a "great success" for the separatist camp, argued Oriol Junqueras, head of the leftist Catalan republican party, given the lack of dialogue with Madrid. The sparring match came ahead of yesterday's Catalan regional election which separatists have billed as a proxy vote on independence from Spain - a description rejected by Madrid.

Cheating pollution Seat, the Spanish subsidiary of Volkswagen, installed over 500,000 cars made in Spain with the now infamous software to cheat pollution emission tests, daily newspaper El Pais reports. Volkswagen faces a US criminal investigation and worldwide legal action after admitting that as many as 11 million of its diesel cars are equipped with software capable of fooling official pollution tests. "The Spanish subsidiary of the German group has installed over half a million of the tampered diesel engines into its vehicles since 2009," El Pais wrote citing unnamed sources with ties to the company.

Additional 13 million euros in aid for refugees

Surprise f or Childr en ’s Home a t Liv erpool B and Sho w

The government approved a Royal Decree regulating the direct concession, on an exceptional basis and on humanitarian grounds, of a subsidy to the following NGOs: the Red Cross, the Spanish Commission for Aid to Refugees (Spanish acronym: CEAR), and the Catholic Association Commission for Migration (Spanish acronym: ACCEM), in light of the international humanitarian crisis and the increase in the number of asylum-seekers.

The Liverpool Band Show at Los Rosales on Saturday 19th was resounding success not only for the organisers Lets Rock Shows, but also for the invited charity. Volunteers from Elche Children’s Care Home were there to raise funds with a raffle. The charity was founded by Annette and Dave English after having visited the home where they found children sleeping on mattresses with no heating.

The Vice-President of the Government, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, specified that this subsidy is aimed at taking in and integrating applicants and beneficiaries of international protection in Spain. The aim is to increase the number of complementary places under the network for refugee reception centres (Spanish acronym: CAR) and to finance information services, orientation, social intervention, psychological care, legal aid, translation and interpretation services, initial reception in Spain and action at border posts. Moreover, equipment will be funded together with the adaption of properties allocated as reception centres and for social-healthcare attention at Short-Stay Immigration Centres (CETI) in Ceuta and Melilla.

The home had its government support withdrawn which left the 18 children with no support except the expat community. Annette and Dave, along with numerous volunteers have worked tirelessly fundraising to ensure that the children do not suffer and live as normal a life as possible. There are presently 18 teenagers who were taken into care as their families could not look after them.

Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría remarked that this is an initial subsidy of 13 million euros for 2015 and 2016. The amount of subsidies granted in 2015 exceeds 20.5 million euros, 7.3 million more than in 2014. So far during this term of office, a total figure of 62 million euros has been allocated to this form of subsidy. This initial aid, explained the Vice-President of the Government, "is tied in, above all, to the increase in applicants for international protection in Spain", and has been expedited following the agreements reached to receive people arriving from Libya and Greece. This aid is in addition to the 200 million euros that the parliamentary groups agreed to on 9 September 2015 following the amendment introduced in the Draft Law on the 2016 General State Budget with the aim of increasing the heading allocated for the reception and care of refugees. In relation to this issue, the Vice-President of the Government announced that, in addition to taking on the numbers allocated to Spain by the European Commission, the Inter-ministerial Committee set up to this end on 4 September 2015 is analysing the procedures for the distribution and transfer of refugees being determined by Brussels. The government, she said, is aware that Spain has a very "well established" national asylum system, it is working in collaboration with the regional governments and non-governmental organisations in determining the resources available and on "re-scaling" the transportation protocols so that it will be possible to organise arrivals to ensure "the best reception and integration" of these people.

As Jax Lawson explained to the 200 strong audience at Los Rosales “These children do not have the advantages that our own children and grandchildren have. Without your help they sometimes don’t even have the basics that we take for granted.” Many a tear was shed and a wonderful 540 Euros was raised from the raffle. But the money didn’t stop coming in then. Thanks to an anonymous donor, the fund was raised to a staggering 600 Euros for the night. Elche Children’s Care Home and Lets Rock Shows would like to thank everyone for their generosity. The charity will be holding a sponsored walk in La Mata on October 17th. San Miguel well represented in Valencian Semi’s By Pat McEwan

The Valencians are in full swing and with so many San Miguel entries, its not surprising to see red shirts playing against each other. There have been some shock results with many of the favourites being knocked out in the first rounds. Up to date San Miguel have the following players who have reached the semi finals: Ladies singles - Chris Parsons. Ladies Pairs - Eileen McLaren and Linda Plaisted, Chris Parsons and Lynn Miller. Mens Pairs - Cliff Plaisted and Fred Willshire. Very well done. Next week we have the Mixed Pairs, Mixed

One fantastic result was from Jan Bright, a new bowler, never played anywhere except in roll ups at San Miguel, entered the singles, played at Emerald Isle, and had a great win. Well done Jan (don't forget the winner buys the drinks ha ha) Good luck to all those in the Semi Finals and the next games. the lady on top in Griffin Household

34 members and guests arrived for the early tee time of 9am; unfortunately the peaceful and relaxed atmosphere that we have enjoyed during the low season months has now come to an awakening end. All visitors to Villamartin must play from the 10th tee in high season, and we were greeted by a swarm of people all jostling for their place on the tee, maybe some of them don’t realise that you actually have a tee time and it’s not 1st come 1st served! We eventually got underway a few minutes late and found the course to be in great condition with the greens recovering well from the recent maintenance. This week the Brits far outnumbered the Vikings, although we did get a new member from the Viking fraternity. Visitors are always welcome to join us, and today was no exception with 4, guests joining us two of which are (or were) husband and wife. We all know how important it is to keep the good lady happy; but really, do you have to let her win? Ron Griffin obviously knows which side his bread is buttered, he returned a very credible 36 points only to be out done by his good lady Dee, who managed a point more. Ron, we all hope that it was worth it! In our Silver category 31 points was needed to get you into 4th place which our treasurer, Alex Goslan duly scored, in 3rd place was

I’m not afraid of snakes Ian Parkinson with 32 points, Yorkshire man Mick Kennedy managed level par 36 points to take 2nd place, but it was a rare raid by Viking Per Skarnes that took the loot with the best score of the day, 40 points! The Gold category was a little tighter at the top but 4th place was tied between Dag Lovas and Billy Allen on 32 points, 3rd place went to that lovely man Vernon Brown on 36 points. 2nd and 1st placed had to be decided on lower handicap between Dave Lethaby and new member Gary Turner both with 38 points, but Dave has the lower handicap, so he takes 1st place. The “2’s” pot today was worth around €26, but as no 2’s were recorded this will be carried over to next week’s competition at Las Ramblas. In the N.T.P.’s competition the results were; Hole 6 D. Lethaby, Hole 9 Natalia Allen, Hole 13 Dave Lethaby and hole 17 was Joe Dean. Photo; Gold category winners. In the Bunker with Mick the Grip ROSE HALL, on Jamaica’s Montego Bay, is a world renowned golf course with a grim history. A 6,000 acre sugar plantation in the 19th century, it was the home of Annee Palmer, the infamous “White Witch of Rose Hall” who, according to legend, cruelly abused her slaves; practised voodoo and murdered all three of her husbands. Her spirit is said to haunt the estate. The par 71 course, with 16 of the 18 holes exposed to crashing waves and the tradewinds, is scary enough without a ghostly Annee Palmer drifting across it, but it’s beauty, like Annee’s, is said to be unforgettable.

Without Rory or Justin the International team are going to need Ryder Cup type inspiration to win this one. AFTER BEING PIPPED at the post by America in the Solheim Cup at Baden Wurttemberg, the European ladies could have headed a couple of hours down the road to Munich to drown their sorrows at the Octoberfest, which begins, oddly enough on September 19th. Originally held in October to mark a royal Bavarian marriage it was moved to the warmer nights of September. Suzann Petterson might have cheered up after a Stein of the strong local brew. Alternatively, after two or three she might not have felt quite so apologetic. NOT MANY GRANDFATHERS win on the PGA Tour, but 51 yr. old Davis Love III shot a triumphant 64 at the Wyndham Championship, playing the first six holes in 5 under par, and making two eagles during the round. Love, the 2016 U.S. Ryder Cup team captain who will assist Jay Haas at the Presidents Cup said: ‘It’s fun to still hang in there with the guys.” There’s still hope for us old’uns. BROOKS KOEPKA (25) from Florida, provides a great example of the grounding the European Tour offers. When he turned pro in 2012 he travelled to Europe to compete on the Challenge Tour. His objective: ‘To become a more rounded player.’ “Going to Europe toughened me,” he admits. “Learning to travel, manage my time, handle myself on the course, play links golf. It’s important to be able to perform in different conditions.” European Tour players have to contend with temperatures ranging from the humid Far East to chilly Scotland, while PGA Tour players can spend much more time in their own comfort zone. Unfortunately the PGA tour offers the most ranking points and the biggest prizes, but at least Koepka can cope with whatever most courses throw at him.

THE 2015 PRESIDENTS CUP (Oct. 8th) will be played in Asia for the first time at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club, Incheon, with defending champions America fielding a strong team including Zach Johnson, Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler. Phil Mickelson is making his 21st consecutive appearance in international team competition, Jordan Spieth is making his third. The 2013 Presidents Cup rookie now has a star on his dressing room door. That’s show business. In the other camp Jason Day, although on brilliant form, can’t win the whole thing on his own. Branden Grace and Danny Lee have been good but no cigars and neither Adam Scott nor Charl Schwartzel have made banner headlines this year.

TAYLOR MADE say their best drivers begin with an ‘R’ so I don’t know why they have called their latest release the ‘M1.’ They can’t be aware it sounds to us like a 1960’s road, in other words, clapped out. The new Cobra King LTD driver, on the other hand, sounds much more fun. The first ever see-through driver, featuring a transparent ‘Spaceport’, it has a 16gm removable weight in the head. A key opens the Spaceport so you can see the innards of the clubhead (should you wish to.) Alternatively, you can keep your sandwiches in it. Taylor Made really should keep up. Until next time, happy golfing. Contact Mick for your regripping and repair requirements: 638 859 475.

Spanglish Golf Society In assn with Costa Blanca Green Fee Svcs La Peraleja on 23rd September 2015. For the latest meeting the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 18 players visited the established course at La Peraleja taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The weather was beautiful and despite well publicised fairway problems the course was in generally good condition despite recent hollow tining work. Padmore strolls to Captain’s Cup success That time of year again when the year’s Captain prepares for handover to the new incumbent, but before the act transpires both the Captain’s Day golf competition and Dinner need to take place. For the former an excellent turnout of 52 members and 11 accompanying guests gathered at the SMGS oft frequented course of La Finca to take part in a stableford competition, principally for the Captain’s Day Prize, but also a wide range of additional prizes, several of which were donated by kind sponsors (Mick the Grip, Moneycorp and Golf Hot Spots). A beautiful day and a course in good condition, particularly the greens, now recovered fully from recent hollow tining, led to good scoring. The one outstanding return posted belonged to Norman Padmore, now clearly recovered from knee knack. His 42 points not only won the Captain’s Trophy and the main prize (a wonderful golfing trip for 2 to Valencia donated by Golf Hot Spots), but also stomped on Captain Phil de Lacy’s initial hopes (which could have been embarrassing) of taking his own trophy, although Geoff Giddy would, in the end, have actually just pipped him on count back, both having scored an excellent 39 points. Steve Higgins (Gold), Roger Webb (Silver) and Richard Bland (Bronze) were the only other players to better their handicaps. Pretty much everybody stayed for the prize giving, and special thanks were giving by Phil to all those

who had contributed to making the day such a success. After the ceremony, and a short break to stock up on refreshments/down another Coronation Chicken wrap (kindly supplied by the Captain and Vice Captain’s good ladies), 27 members remained behind for the year’s end AGM, the minutes of which will be posted on SMGS’s website some time soon. The Captain’s dinner takes place this Friday (Sept 25th) at Campoamor Clubhouse. The day’s main competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Karen Simpson (34), 3rd Brian Mulligan (35), 2nd Richard Bland (37), and 1st, with very much the best score of the day, Norman Padmore with a superb 42 points. Silver Category: 4th Mike Jordan (34), 3rd Roger Webb (37), 2nd Captain Phil De Lacy (39 on CB) and 1st, with the same very good score, Geoff Giddy. Gold Category: 4th Mike Frankish (35), 3rd Jack Simpson (36 on CB), 2nd Darren Hancock (36 on CB), and 1st, Steve Higgins with 37 points. Other Results and Prizes: Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Mick (The Grip) Reeves (3), Mike Frankish (6), Steve Higgins (13) and Jacqui Rust (16). Nearest the pin in 3 went to Norman McBride (Hole 10, Bronze), Steve Davis (11, Silver) Ben

It’s Wayne’s World as Celts take on La Ser ena

Last Saturday we celebrated our September Open Day at La Serena. Conditions were ideal for golf with glorious sunshine and a gentle breeze taking the edge of the very high temperature. The course is in fantastic condition with receptive greens, challenging rough and improved bunkers. Thanks again to the hard working greenkeeping staff under the guidance of Wayne the head green keeper. As always the marshalls and clubhouse staff of Paul and John looked after all our needs and we were set for a great day of golf. Thanks to one and all for all their efforts. Our results, on the day were as follows; NTP's Damian Corvan, Bev Ellender, Denis McCormack, Brian Wensley, Mike Sephton and John O'Brien . Category 2, winner Sue Benning 37, second Julian Lopez with 34 and third Martin Fitzpatrick with 33. Category 1, winner Sue Owens 34, second Alan Proudfoot ( I never win a prize when I score 36 plus) 34 and third Damina Corvan 34. The gross prize was won by John O'Brien with 29 points. The destination of the main prizes turned out to be a family affair, with dad, Mark scoring a birdie on the last hole to pip his son Dean. Runner-up overall, Dean McCluskey with 37 and the winner with 38 points Mark McCluskey. All players had their handicaps adjusted by the time they got home, thanks to John in the pro-shop. We also presented the monthly crystal winners,

these competitions seem to be very popular if the scoring is anything to go by. Week one winner Harry Leewith 41 and runner-up Andy Thomas with 39. Our monthly medals were won by John O'Brien with a 71 and Mike Willoughby with a 74. Can I remind team captains to register their team on the federation website for the next match of The International League at Bonalba Golf Club on the 3rd of October. The league is very closely contested with 3 or 4 points separating the top half of the table. This year we have ten teams and with the increasing interest we will look at expanding the league further and creating a second division. The federation have provided a subsidy for all players taking part in the tournament with all green fees costing 22 euro per course. We would like to thank the federation in Valencia for this generous sponsorship. Are you aware to maintain your handicap here in Spain you must play in 4 federated games per year. We always welcome new members and guests and if you would like to play in one of our Open Days why not give me a call? It also counts as one of your official score cards for handicap purposes. Being federated with The Celts club de golf has many advantages, including competitively priced green fees from 20 euro per game and regular federated tournaments. The day’s Best Gross Score was achieved by Jack Simpson with a very respectable 77. The Abacus was won by long hitter (see above)

Team Foxtrot scramble off with Pirata Pot

A good turn out of 22 members and 2 guests met up late morning on the 15th September at Bar El Pirata for coffee and for some a glass of brandy. The venue for the day was the very local La Marquesa Golf for a ‘Texas Scramble’. Our photographer, Kristoff, took a group photograph outside the bar with further photographs taken of each of the four balls on the first tee for distributing to the members. The weather was on the warm side with only a slight breeze. The course itself was not in the best of conditions, but had improved from the previous Sunday, when some of the members had played it. This was recognised by the Golf Club which gave us a discount which offset some of the minor disappointment of some of the members. Overall the members thoroughly enjoyed the day with lots of banter and laughter. The two guests enjoyed it so much that they are now members!!! The winners on the day were: Team F comprising of John Rush, Colin Hilditch, John West and Roger Farrington with a net score 62 Second were: Team B comprising of Ludi Dent, Brian Philpotts, Norman Potter and Richard Heighes with a net score 63 NTP winners were: 5th - John Rush, 11th – John Young, 15th – Russ Burrows (much to his surprise and everyone else's), and the 17th – John Young After the game we returned to the bar for a well deserved drink. As always our hostess Sam provided food which is always appreciated. Our photographer, Kristoff, returned to record the winners and as on previous occasions wives, girlfriends and partners joined us for the presentation which always makes for a great atmosphere. Our next games have been booked for the 29th September at La Torre Golf followed by our game on the 20th October at Font del Llop. If you are interested in joining our happy, friendly crew please contact us by e-mail at elpiratagolfsociety@outlook.com or by visiting the Bar El Pirata, located in Quesada, close to the roundabout, a sand wedge away from the 18th green. The winners in the photo, starting from the left are John West, Colin Hilditch, John Rush and Roger Farrington.

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. AROUND AND ABOUT THE COURSES - FONT DEL LLOP Nestling in a high sided valley close to the town of Aspe is wonderful golf course called Font del Llop, which literally translated from ‘old’ Spanish means Wolf’s watering hole and has been open to the public since 2010. The clubhouse is a wonderfully restored building which used to belong to the land owner and his family and incorporates the proshop, locker rooms, conference rooms, restaurant and a crèche. The course has good practise facilities with a driving range, chipping green and putting green. This course was designed by Blake Stirling and Marco Martin includes five par 5’s and five par 3’s and measures 5,814 metres (6,395 yards) off the yellow tees and 4,800 metres (5,280 yards) from the ladies red tees. The course blends naturally into the local scenery and the main feature of the course is a small river (formerly used in beer production) which runs through the course and which inter-links five ponds positioned to catch any errant shots. Although not overly long by modern standards this course has to be handled and managed well by all standards of golfer, particularly on the opening five holes which are ‘tight’ and which ‘squeeze’ you and my advise would be to put away the driver on these holes and use a small wood or hybrid club and hit the ball ‘where you can see it’ rather than letting loose with the ‘big dog’. After these opening holes the course ‘opens up’ a little to give the golfer some relief and I particularly liked the 491 metre (yellow tees) par 5 9th hole which raises gently up hill but allows you the options of playing ‘right’ or ‘left’ of the water hazard that runs the length of the fairway up to the green. On the back nine holes the course finishes rather uniquely with a sequence of par 5, par 3, par 3 and finally par 5 with the final hole somewhat summarizing all that you have seen over the previous 17 holes. I would strongly advise that whether you are a tourist or a resident you simply must add this course to your playing schedule. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. CHARITY DAY RAISES OVER 1650 EUROS The Royal British Legion and Finca La Castellana Animal Welfare Centre (San Miguel) Charity Day at Vistabella 19th September 2015. Today’s competition was to raise funds for the Royal British Legion and the La Castellana Animal Welfare Centre in San Miguel. When the initial booking was made it was for a maximum of 52 players BUT we were inundated with entries for 100 players resulting in an unprecedented TWO shotgun starts starts at 8.15am and 2.00pm with TWO separate pairs competitions As you can imagine this was somewhat of a logistical nightmare as the afternoon players arrived at the course at approximately the same time as the morning players completed their rounds and there were cards, raffle tickets, meal tickets and money everywhere but with some excellent organisation all went as well as could be expected and all players started within 10 minutes of the allotted start time which was something of a feat considering what was going on! We must say a big thank you to Diego Garcia for presenting the Vistabella course in such excellent condition for our competition given the long hot summer and ultra wet start to September. These days don't work without the efforts of many people and sponsors and we thank the following for their efforts and contributions: The Leader Newspaper, Mike Probert (Costa Blanca Green Fee Services), Las Rosas Bar (San Miguel), Tidy Paws Dog Grooming Salon, Graham Jackson (Just Electrics), Janes Cakes, Eduardo's Pets, Euronics Electrical Shop (Blue Lagoon & Quesada), John Jones, The Junction Bar (El Galan), Orihuela Costa Pools, Albatross Golf Tours, Richie Morgan (No Grow Grass), Danny Wheatley and of course Mick the Grip Reeves. In addition the following golf courses donated vouchers for FREE golf to be auctioned: Altorreal, Alicante, Alenda, Bonalba, El Plantio. Font del Llop, Hacienda Del Alamo, La Peraleja, La Serena, Nike IRM, Roda and Vistabella. Once again a big thank you to you all. Competition 1 (shotgun Start 8.15am) – 56 players The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – N O'Donaghue & P Dreelan – 47 points 2nd – P Durrant & D Leatherby – 42 points 3rd – P Ives & K Smith – 42 points 4th – C Firth & R Greenway – 42 points Strongest Pair – Buck Taylor & Steve Dunhill Nearest Pins – Roy Greenway,Holly Thompson & Dave Gregson 2's Pot (shared) – Sam Currie & Dave Gregson Competition 2 (shotgun Start 2.00pm – 44 players

Billen edges out returnees for Wednesday Stableford Our first game of the week was a two ball better ball which was won with an excellent score of 47 pts by Alan Douglas and Ulrike Barth. Ulrike scored 28pts in 11 holes while Alan provided solid support with the highlight being his superb birdie on the difficult par 4 16th. In second place was the pairing of Rod Doel and Dave Pulling on 44 pts with Rod contributing 31 pts in 13 holes. On Wednesday we played our usual individual stableford competition and it was good to see an increase in our numbers with many returning having escaped the hot humid weather of the last couple of months. Unusually scoring was higher in Category 2 this week with Marleen Billen top scorer with 37 pts edging out the returning Heinz

Lei on 36 pts. Coming up on the rails was ex jockey and trainer Reg Akehurst who took third place on a count back from Mike Chapman and Rod Doel who all had 34 pts. In Category 1 Ken Robertson was in first place on 36 pts with his good lady wife Liz Robertson in second on 32 pts. In third losing out on a count back also on 32 pts was Doug Wright but that was tempered somewhat as he was one of only two players to score a 2 sharing the 2's pot with Terry Cullen. On Friday we played a best 2 of 4 with all scores counting on the Par 5's. The winners were Barry Holtham, Jan Svendsen, Brian Dent and 'Albert' with 95 pts. In second were Liz and Ken Robertson, Mike Chapman and 'Albert' on 92 pts........By Mike Chapman

Torrevieja’s Novelda woes continue. Novelda CF..................3 CD Torrevieja ..............1

This Alicante province local derby has historically gone the way of Novelda. Having said that, Torry were really up for it, recently securing a first win of the season which lifted them up to the dizzy heights of 17th place. Novelda meanwhile, had already notched up 3 victories and a draw, sitting pretty in 6th position. Pedreño would have been hoping that his squad could stay injury free, knowing full well that they would have to be both physically and mentally fit, in order to continue winning ways. Well, he certainly got his wish as both the starting 11, and 5 substitutes, were identical from the victory over Muro. On 18 mins, Lewis cracked a shot from outside

the area, which keeper Alberto pushed behind for a corner. Novelda took the lead on 33 min courtesy of a cross from Javi Salero to Chupe, who headed home past Oscar. Torry came close 5 mins later when Cesar dibbled through the defence, only to be denied at the death by Alberto. Just before half time, Chupe shot against the post, then from the rebound, Javi Salero brought out an excellent save by Oscar.

Following the interval the group huddle failed to have any effect

The teams went into the interval with Torry trailing by the only goal of the game. Substitute Juanma entered the fray for Torry as the 2nd half commenced, but he could do nothing to prevent debutant Javi Salero's cross finding the head of Bangeras, whose goal doubled his teams tally on 49 mins. Carrasco had a good effort well saved by Alberto, then from a corner, Sanchez headed just wide as Torry fought back. Javi Salero certainly made it a debut to remember on 72 mins, when he scored his teams 3rd goal, putting the game out of Torry's reach. A double substitution of Juanfran and Adrian paid instant dividends, for on 83 mins a Juanfran header deserved better, but less than a minute later the pair combined to good effect. A well placed cross by Adrian was converted by Juanfran, giving them the consolation goal they so richly deserved. On Sun 4 Oct ko 6pm, local rivals Crevillente Deportivo visit Vicente Garcia Stadium, for what promises to be another cracking derby.

Over 300€ for Casa Cuna Sucina Our annual event being held at the IRM course Saurines de la Torre, near Roldan, choosing a Match Play format. Although it was not as hot as our last two games, it was still quite warm and the course being in a great condition as usual. The Match Play format seemed to be very interesting for those players that haven't played it before. On an individual basis, some very good scores were returned. In addition, we were raising funds for our 2015 Charity - Casa Cuna Sucina, and to make the event more interesting, we also had additional competitions which players could enter for a nominal price. On the day funds raised for our chosen charity totalled 163€'s through various competitions. Our Members & Guests being very generous. Our Captains Team romping home with a 7-3 win! Well done everyone. The nearest the pin prizes went to: Hole 6 Sharon Seed, Hole 10 Granham Platts & Hole 18 Ann Dyos. No winner on Hole 14. Following this event on Saturday, 19th September, we held our Captains Dinner / Dance. This was held at La Mario's in Sucina. A fantastic evening and an auction was held which raised a further 140€'s for the Charity. Our next game is at Mar Menor on Tuesday, 20th October.

Hookers take early lead in Cadena Sunrise Tenpin League

It’s all - Wright for Captain Nigel at Alenda The season is winding down and Alenda was our monthly Trophy game, but the top players failed to capitalize and allowed the captain to come out on top of this latest fixture. Roundup of the results was as follows; Nearest the pin on the par three's were Mike Thomas, Bill Martin and John Evans, nearest the pin in two was David Crouch and nearest in three was Andrew Drinkall, best Front nine Marc Doherty, best back Andrew Drinkall. Silver division winner was John Goulder but the honors of the day went to the captain Nigel Wright who won the gold division and overall prize. Back at The Med Bar on El Raso our usual excellent buffet was served and the presentation took place and John Goulder also won the football card.

Our next outing is a blind pairs day which is sponsored by Jan and Buck Taylor and is already fully booked, but if you wish to play with this very friendly society please put your name down on the list at The Med Bar, or email us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk
