NHS fundraiser Captain Tom Moore to be knighted There can be few more fitting honours awarded than the knighthood announced by Downing Street for the incredible NHS fundraising feats of WWII veteran Captain Tom Moore. The 100-year-old raised over £33 million for the NHS last month by walking laps of his garden Initially determined to walk 100 laps of his garden in an effort to raise £1000 his efforts quickly caught the imagination of the whole UK and by the time he had achieved his target in the days leading up to his birthday he had already raised over £12 million for NHS charities. The award was recommended by the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, although in recent weeks, the campaign “to knight Sir Tom” was featured by many national newspapers. Mr Johnson described Sir Tom as a "true national treasure" and praised his "fantastic fundraising" which he

said "provided us all with a beacon of light through the fog of coronavirus". He recommended Sir Tom be exceptionally honoured by the Queen, who has approved the award, Number 10 said. An investiture ceremony will take place at a later date. The knighthood comes just weeks after Captain Tom was made an honorary colonel to mark his centenary and his fundraising efforts. He also released a charity single, You'll Never Walk Alone, with singer Michael Ball, which reached number one in the charts, making him the oldest artist ever to have a UK number one single.

PP mayors demand to know why they are not moving to Phase 2 W

ith a united voice, Alicante Province’s four senior mayors, Alicante, (Luis Barcala), Torrevieja (Eduardo Dolón), Benidorm (Toni Pérez) and Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, have come out publicly to ask the Ministry of Health for explanations as to why they have not requested that the Valencian Community pass to Phase 2 of the de-escalation plan, which allows more relief measures for the economy and, therefore, for sectors such as commerce and hospitality. Each mayor made his request separately, but in the end the message is exactly the same: the people want to know for what reasons the move to phase 2 has not been requested? The Alicante PP made the request along with their coalition partner, Ciudadanos, and both have presented an institutional statement for debate in the next plenary session in which they request that the Conselleria de Sanidad" provides daily, updated and quality information on the main data and indicators of the incidence that the covid-19 is having in Alicante". Later, it was the mayor of Torrevieja, the second most important city currently governed by the PP in the province of Alicante. Eduardo Dolón opted to send a letter to the Minister of Health, Ana Barceló, in which he spoke of his great concern about the situation that the productive sectors of the city are going through, especially commerce and hospitality, which have once again seen their expectations cut

short with the decision not to move to Phase II of the de-escalation. The mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, has demanded "to know of the criteria used to determine which territories pass the Phase and who made the decision", since, as he explained, "this opposition is intolerable, this lack of information contrary to the law of transparency, and is certainly not typical of a democratic system”. He said that he wants to know whether the slight increase in the incidence of the virus, or basic reproduction index, from 0.66 to 0.85 in the Valencian Community, announced by Ana Barceló has also occurred in the Vega Baja Health Departments. The four mayors have accused the President of the Valencian Generalitat, Ximo Puig, of "drowning" the province by refusing to move to Phase 2 in the region. The recovery that involved the reopening of shops, hotels and businesses a week ago has been stopped dead in a region that needs help from the Consell and is now only facing obstacles on the part of the Valencian regional government which it is once again abandoning and leaving its inhabitants to their fate.” They all agreed that the decision to change the sanitary areas in the province was taken without any explanation or founded criteria so that situation in the province of Alicante now resembles that of other areas that are more affected by the coronavirus. "It had nothing to do with the health, social or the economic situation of the Vega Baja region" PP spokesman Adrián Ballester said, "the Generalitat is allied with Pedro Sánchez in making a decision that further damages the Vega Baja and which has not been taken into account."

e look forward to seeing our loyal customers once again just as soon as the government restrictions imposed because of COVID-19 have been removed. Until then, please keep safe

Protesters bring cities across Spain to a standstill Santiago Abascal of Vox leads anti government demo

CITY CENTRE STREETS IN MADRID

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of many Spanish cities on Saturday morning calling for the resignation of the Spanish government following their handling of the Coronavirus / Covid-19 pandemic, which has brought the country to a complete standstill for more than two months. Cars travelled in convoy through the streets of Madrid on Saturday, honking horns and flying Spanish flags from their windows. The procession in Madrid, called by the right-wing Vox party, was part of a nationwide protest against the Pedro Sanchez government. Santiago Abascal, the leader of the right wing Vox party, rode at the front of the demonstration on top of a double decker bus. He spoke demonstrators via the EsRadio network, saying “I’m excited to talk to you, and I am not surprised to see so many Spaniards Turning out. We are here to defend our freedom. The threat to the freedom of Spain is being led by an illegitimate government that has now become a criminal government, one that is incapable of protecting its people and is directly responsible for the worst management of this crisis on the whole planet.” “Let us never forget what they have done to us. Have no doubt that we will take them to the courts. They know it and they are afraid of your freedom, which is why they are still trying to intimidate us. Spain will prevail and we will get our normality back. We will recover our hopes and the future for our children.” The protest took place in a festive atmos-

phere, without any incidents, and in an orderly manner. Faced with the impossibility of moving any vehicles, all flying Spanish flags, the protesters sang the Spanish anthem, the Legion anthem and the song "Libre" by Nino Bravo, which was chanted by the majority of the participants. Sizeable demos also took place in Barcelona, Seville, Cordoba, Pamplona, Badajoz, Valladolid, in Castilla y León, Málaga, Marbella and Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the Balearic Islands and in the streets surrounding the Alicante central market.

This was announced by the Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, at a press conference on Friday. Illa has said that on this occasion the Community of Madrid “meets the requirements to make the move at the third time of asking.” The decision by the Valencian government not to seek to move into phase 2 has been heavily criticised by many municipalities with the PP mayors of Benidorm, Alicante, Torrevieja and Orihuela (story page 3) all seeking explanations from the Minister Ana Barcelo as to why the decision was taken without any prior discussions with the towns and cities concerned. With effect from Monday the de-escalation phases by the Autonomous Communities will be as follows: Andalusia. - Malaga and Granada joined phase 1 on Monday the 18th where they remain. The rest of the Andalusian provinces (Almería, Córdoba, Cádiz, Huelva, Jaén and Seville), move to phase 2. Aragon. – Moves to phase 2 on Monday 25. Asturias. - Moves to phase 2 starting on Monday 25. In addition to asking staff for permission to use the toilet, as Ryanair aims to restart 40 percent of its flights from 1 July, it was announced last week that passengers will be required to wear facemasks on board all it’s aircraft.

EASA has said that everyone, passengers and crew, will be expected to wear masks.

Horadada partially reopens Municipal Sports Centre

Ryanair’s Group CEO Michael O’Leary said that he welcomed the European Union’s recommendation on face masks, although he called again on the Irish and UK Government to abandon their unexplainable, ineffective, and unimplementable quarantine restrictions. EasyJet says it too would require the wearing of face masks for all those aboard its aircraft as the airline planned to resume a small number of flights next month with strict safety protocols for passengers and crew alike, one of which will be the removal of the food service on board its planes.

Pilar de la Horadada’s councillor for sports announced that the municipal outdoor sports facilities have now been adapted in line with government regulations and reopened their doors last Saturday, 23 May. For the time being, however, the racket areas and the athletics track are the only areas to reopen for the use of the general public.

The company said it would likely operate domestic flights within the UK and France from 15 June with the only international service being Gatwick to Nice initially. In a 28 page guide issued last week the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has said that everyone, passengers and crew, will be expected to wear masks, however, Jet2 continues to publish the advice of Public Health England (PHE) on its website which advises against using masks outside clinical settings. PHE state that If you’re fit and well, with no symptoms, there’s no evidence that wearing facemasks as a general prevention measure is helpful. The airline had initially scheduled the

Before accessing the facilities, users must disinfect their hands with hydroalcoholic gel. The facilities will be disinfected before and after each use in accordance with current regulations. Training in the racket and athletics areas will be individual, never in pairs, and the locker room, showers, toilets and fountains may not be used. There will be an area to disinfect footwear, markings have been placed on the floor in the waiting areas, and punctuality is required when accessing the facility. The councillor said that they are working to enable the rest of the sports facilities to open as we progress through the phase of de-escalation.

DRIVERS LACK CONFIDENCE IN GOVERNMENT EV OWNERSHIP ADVICE As consumer appetite to reduce emissions grows, EV ownership doubts prevail www.venson.com Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, has confirmed significant investment to support the UK in retaining the physical and environmental benefits of the coronavirus lockdown[1], including promoting the take up of electric vehicles (EVs). However, a survey by Venson Automotive Solutions reveals motorists have little confidence in government bodies when it comes

to advice on buying and owning an EV, with just 2% of car buyers saying that the government would be their go-to information source. The Venson survey showed that buyers favour independent advice from consumer motoring titles offering reviews by unbiased experts (58% use these sites).

they private or company car drivers – have the confidence they need to make the switch and become EV drivers. Independent experts clearly have a big role to play in driving change and supporting manufacturers, as do those friends and family who have already made the transition to electric.”

Manufacturers came in second with 44% of respondents seeking information here, followed by 31% of people seeking information and advice from friends and family who already driven an EV. The survey also revealed that the recent increase in EV appetite has been driven by a desire to reduce emissions (for 47% of respondents), but confidence in the practicalities of ownership remains low. Just 9% of women feel more confident in owning and maintaining an EV, and 18% of men. The Transport Secretary stated that the car industry has been hit severely during the current crisis, but said it is encouraging to see that April’s car sales reported, for the first time, the two most popular models were both electric. Mr Shapps went on to confirm a doubling of the funds available for the on-street residential chargepoint scheme[2], with an additional £10 million now being made available, to encourage more drivers to switch to electric as cars will remain vital for many families. Alison Bell, Marketing Director at Venson Automotive Solutions commented: “It is encouraging to see the government making such an important financial injection to rekindle growth in the motor industry and boost EV take-up at the same time. As we take tentative steps out of lockdown restrictions, the industry needs to collaborate to ensure consumers – be

Slow start on return of Aguamarina Street Market

There were about 15 occupied pitches with traders, generally, saying that they approved of the reorganisation carried out by the Department of Markets in order to comply with the regulations introduced by the Ministry of Health.

The street market in Cabo Roig resumed last Thursday but only for those traders dealing in foodstuffs. However, trading was said to be fairly slow.

Local associations have long been asking for chemical toilets, exclusively for the use of the traders, and it was noted that two have now been installed. It is hoped that they continue to be provided long term.

COVID-19 effects on Operations A backlog of more than four and a half months with over 67,000 patients to undergo surgery With the easing of lockdown and the gradual reduction in coronavirus cases the new crisis facing the regions hospitals is the enormous backlog of operations with the waiting time for surgery now exceeding four and a half months, and a total of 66,973 patients waiting to be called. On March 12, the Ministry of Health ordered the suspension or delay of scheduled surgery, non-preferred outpatient consultations, non-preferred diagnostic tests and scheduled admissions, in order to meet the emergency created by coronavirus.

"Tests are still needed to determine the cause," added O'Neill, who set up a GoFundMe campaign on Thorne's behalf, alongside golfer Mark Roe to help pay for care costs amongst other outgoings. "I have had to bring in a care company to help with the excessively increased care he now needs," said O'Neill. "I have also hired a legal representative, to aid me in getting access to his medical records. "And to gain official answers, as to what exactly is going on. I am failing to see sense in it."

Bankrupt Thorne returned home, but questions have been asked by friend Julie O'Neill about his health.

Bedridden Thorne is unable to answer telephone calls or messages personally to speak to concerned people about his illness.

"I am still trying to obtain medical information and turned to legal help, as I’m not 100% sure exactly what is going on right now," said O'Neill.

Lament for a La Zenia Legend Christy Moore sings that “life is an ocean and love is a boat.” If this be so, don’t we all encounter many boats on the ocean of our lives? Another metaphor is the saying, ‘ships that pass in the night’. Numerous ships pass us in the night, most of which we barely give a second glance, but every so often we encounter a bright, exciting and exceptional liner which crosses our swell and accompanies us on part of our ocean of life. We never forget such a beautiful ship. Tomas O’Brien had that special quality which separated him from the rest of the fleet. He dazzled us with the brightness of his presence: He entertained us with stories, jokes, singing and banter; but most importantly, behind the fun there beat a big heart, caring and always willing to do a good turn for a friend. Tomas died last week. I first met the man when he came to Spain around twenty years ago. We hit it off from the very start – despite the difference of Tomas ‘taking a drink’ (!) whereas I had drank up my quota many years previously. When God was dishing out talent, he seemed to have been a bit overly generous with Tomas. I told him one time that he reminded me of ‘the Gorgeous Gael’, Jack Doyle; because he could sing like a lark, was a sportsman of note, a handsome man and just oozed enough confidence to be anything he wanted to be. Like the other ‘Gorgeous Gael’, if Tomas had a fault, it was that he was too good at everything to concentrate on just one role in life. ‘Paddy’s Point’ had been opened for a year when

Tomas said to me; ‘La Zenia has everything now except Irish newspapers.’ He told me to ‘see about it’ and I replied that I would delegate that project to him. I never thought it would happen, but my friend set about having the Sunday papers flown to Alicante, where he collected the bundles and brought them to sell in the bar. In a short time, there would be a queue waiting for the ‘paper man’ every Sunday morning. Like every good magician, Tomas had a lovely assistant. We remember Ann with great fondness as well. Tomas spent all of Sunday in the bar peddling his papers. We had live entertainment every night – but there was no entertainment to equal Tomas in full flight. The banter with his new buddies was priceless, and I often had a pain in my face from laughing. Once when a ‘tight’ lady complained about the price of the paper in comparison to home. The ‘paper man’ asked; ‘do you think they bleedin’ fly over here on their own?!’ A ‘Dub’ by birth, but of Tipperary stock, Tomas had two strong GAA counties to support – and did we ever hear about it! My greatest moment in that regard was when Westmeath beat Dublin in the 2004 Leinster Senior Football Championship. In 2000, I brought Live GAA coverage to ‘Paddy’s Point’ – another first on the Costa. Sundays were brilliant. Tomas started taking [small] bets on the matches … just to stir things up! It was his show – and he played ‘the lead’ to perfection. In his youth, ‘T’ had played senior hurling for Dublin and soccer for Homefarm F.C. Talk about versatility …! With such a magnetic personality, Tomas could have been the number one salesman on the Costa Blanca – or anywhere else for that matter. He did it for a while, but it bothered him that people were coming out from Ireland and Britain and spending more than they could afford on Spanish properties. That tells us much about the man.

Tomas O’Brien was a very proud Irishman and a fluent Irish speaker. (He also acquired a working proficiency in Spanish) No surprise though that he made as many English, Scottish and Welsh friends as he did of his compatriots. Many of these ex-pats remained close friends up until the end. In recent years I would sometimes meet my good friend in Dublin and we would head for Croke Park together. As soon as we got to our seats, he would look around to see which supporters were near us, then the familiar twinkle came back to his eye as he set about ‘raising hell’ one more time. The other side of Tomas was that he phoned me a few times to ask me to join him in visiting a mutual friend in hospital or to attend a funeral. During all of his life, Tomas O’Brien slipped in and out of his many roles without fuss or fanfare - but always with class and dignity. He did the same one final time last week, when he took his leave of us whilst sleeping in his own bed.

Tomas had that special quality which separated him from the rest of the fleet

It is a sign of how much a person meant to us when we have regrets for not seeing more of that person in recent years. This is how I feel now …

Rojales King Charles lll bridge works resume after COVID-19 stoppage By Andrew Atkinson

19 pandemic lockdown.

Rojales ancient bridge works resumed on May 13 after stoppage caused by the coronavirus COVID-

The Mayor of Rojales, Antonio Pérez, terminated the 700,000 euro repair contract in May 2019,

awarded in January to the company Aitana, due to spiralling costs. The company was engaged to refurbish the hydraulic complex of the historic Charles III Bridge that runs over the Segura River, as well as the dam and the old water wheel. During current works the bridge will be prohibited to use by traffic: "Rojales Ayuntamiento apologise for any inconvenience caused by the works. "It is important to complete the works of the important bridge of which is of historical heritage of our Municipality," said a spokesperson from the town Hall.

"The restoration work should have been completed in April 2009, halted after the contractor reportedly asked for an additional 100,000 euros to purchase high quality granite. "The bridge, a Rojales landmark, and one of the most recognisable images associated with the town, is a very important vehicle and pedestrian thoroughfare. There has been criticisms from some quarters, recommencing the bridge works, citing no notification. Others have applauded their return. No date is announced for completion.

These recreate the ancient Renaissance gardens of Valencia which were widely influenced by Arab culture. As in Renaissance gardens, architectural features have a great importance in l’Albarda; visitors will be transported to ancient times as they wander the

The Pleasures of Breathing Better Alicante is now the city with the lowest pollution in Spain

The absence of traffic during the confinement, the lower movement of goods in local ports and the fact that there has been no assault of the air from the Sahara ensures that the province of Alicante continues to have one of the lowest levels of pollution in the country Perhaps the only positive news of the cruel pandemic is that the levels of air pollution in Alicante have been restored to those of 40 years ago and we are all breathing a little after two months of confinement. The drastic reduction in industrial activity, the lack of traffic, the closure of many factories and with practically everything stopped, the air has been much purer than that inhaled in March, according to a study by Ecologists in Action. Also key has been the lower movement of cargo in our ports and the fact that there has been no invasion of the extremely hot, dry and sometimes dust-laden layer of air from the Sahara. Alicante is the city with the lowest pollution in Spain, followed by València. The decrease in pollution levels is 72%, on average, between its 3 measurement stations, with the NO2 (nitro compounds) reduction being 79% in la Florida station, which is the one that usually reaches the highest levels of this pollutant. The report by Ecologistas en Acción "Effects of the Covid-19 crisis on urban air quality in Spain" prepared from official measurements in 26 cities, concludes that the drastic reduction in traffic continues to translate into an unprecedented improvement of air quality in Spanish cities, well below the legal limits and the WHO recommendations.

For the de-escalation, Ecologistas en Acción proposes maintaining good practices such as proximity shopping, voluntary teleworking and electronic administration, lowering the speed limit on urban roads to 30 kilometres per hour, promoting active pedestrian and bicycle mobility and guaranteeing public transport with new laws. The greatest reductions have occurred in the cities of Alicante (72%) and València (69%), and the smallest in Oviedo (42%) and Zaragoza (45%). Madrid has lowered NO2 levels by 59% and Barcelona by 62%, on average. The measurement networks of cities are very different, so their data cannot be accurately compared. Prevailing rainfall and atmospheric instability during spring have also contributed significantly to improving overall air quality. Last month was the rainiest April since records became available NO2 causes around 7,000 premature deaths each year in Spain, according to the Carlos III Health Institute and the European Environment Agency. It is an irritating gas that aggravates respiratory diseases and reduces resistance to infections. There are many studies that are closely linking the mortality rates of COVID-19 disease with air pollution. What is clear is that the COVID-19 crisis shows that the structural reduction of motorized traffic and changes in mobility patterns are the best tool to reduce air pollution in cities, even taking into account the exceptional nature of the extreme situation we are currently experiencing.

Is the footpath any nearer to completion?

P

rime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has invited the hospitality industry to start preparing now the resumption of their activities to host both national and international tourists.

In a statement from Moncloa Palace on Saturday, Sánchez has defended his intention to return the pulse to the tourism sector, which plays a "fundamental role" in the economy and the creation of jobs in Spain. "There will be a tourist season this summer," said the prime minister, who says that the industry will be revived as he invited bars, restaurants, beach and inland establishments to "prepare to resume their activities in a few days” . Sánchez also encouraged Spaniards to plan their holidays and "take advantage of the wonderful offers nationally", because "there will be some great opportunities toward the end of June and onwards". On foreign tourism, he confirmed the announcement by Minister Teresa Ribera that International visitors will be welcomed into the country from July, and it will be done "in safety", which is why it we have said that foreign tourists "can start to plan their holidays in Spain". "Spain needs tourism but tourism needs security both at its place of origin and at its destination, so we will guarantee that tourists will not run any risk or bring any risks into our country," he said. For Sánchez, “there is no hostility between health and business ; without health there is no business, and that is why this Government will combine firm economic support for the sector with full sanitary guarantees." The Prime Minister had a message for foreign tourists: "Spain will once again be waiting to welcome you into our country from the beginning of July and whoever comes into Spain, will be able to count a country that provides you with sanitary

guarantees and one that is also committed to the sustainability of our planet." "Although we are one step away from victory, we are still in a health emergency, the virus has not disappeared, it is still on the prowl and we have to keep it at bay, it is essential not to relax," said the Prime Minister. "The Spanish people have pushed the virus back, the Spanish people have reversed the curve, and consequently the great wave of the pandemic has now been overcome as all of Spain can firmly start the transition to the new normal," he added.

He added that "the most difficult days are behind us” and in the week of May 11 to 17 the number of those patients who overcame the virus was 13,328 compared to 3,944 new cases. "We have achieved this, and not by chance, but by force of will, discipline and determination", he said, while acknowledging "the overwhelming work" of medical staff and "the sacrifice of all our people” As of Monday, all of Spain will be in either phase 1 or 2 and therefore family and friends can be together once again, shops and terraces will be able to reopen and the streets will regain their vitality. In his call for prudence and responsibility, the Prime Minister emphasised that the same values and discipline will be necessary until a vaccine or a therapeutic remedy is discovered and readily available, and he has urged everyone to observe safety and hygiene measures: maintain interpersonal distance, hand washing, masks and whatever they need to do to keep themselves safe.

The age of the "clients" ranged from 15 to 17 years The Civil Guard in Rojales has detained a 30-yearold man and a 24-year-old woman, for a crime against public health, for the cultivation and trafficking of drugs.

They say that the gang had been active for some time, and whose main customers were minors.

In response to a letter sent last April to the Planning Department of the Orihuela Town Hall, by the Asociación de vecinos Cabo Roig y Lomas, the Department of Transparency has provided access to the file on the situation regarding the CV-941 Bridge over the AP7 motorway at the back of La Regia.

The Orihuela Town Hall last requested the urbanisation developer URBANA SAN MIGUEL, S.A. to present a schedule of deadlines for undertaking the project on 26th of March 2019. The builder acknowledged receipt of the letter a week later.

The building works would then be carried out.

The council said at the time that having far exceeded the time limit to complete the project they would be initiating the procedures to cancel the agreement made with the developer.

However, at this stage, we are unable to confirm just how far into the project the council are.

Having taken advice from a specialist the council said that it intended to cancel the conditions of the contract with the developer, probably through an agreement in the Municipal Plenary, and that the Town Hall would then carry out the works, with its own financing, which would also be comple-

were all found to be in possession of small packets of hashish or marijuana.

The Almoradi Civil Guard, who, after receiving information, concentrated their investigation on the rather excessive movement of people around a Rojales home, near a children’s playground and located above the main post office in the town, next to the route of the river Segura.

In the house the agents found one of the rooms was solely used for the cultivation marijuana, with which they supplied their entire portfolio of clients. They also found material for the care of plants (halogen lamps, fans, electric transformers, etc.) and elements for weighing and distributing the drug (precision scales and containers).

It was found that people were in the house for only a few minutes and when these same people were later identified in the surrounding streets, they

Following their appearance in Court number 2 of Torrevieja, the man was detained in prison while the woman was released on bail.

Over 600 people demonstrated about the delay in building the path over 2 years ago, at which time the mayor promised to speed the process up.

There would then be a need to re design and redact the project and send it to the Ministry of Public Works, for their approval. Once the corresponding budget is assigned, the contract will be put out to tender and awarded to the contract to the winning bidder. Some of these processes can be carried out simultaneously, so the time frame should not be excessively long.

The association confirmed that it is a project of great need, due to the serious risks to the health of pedestrians and motorists. They say that they believe that it is now only a matter of political will and commitment from the Mayor toward the people of the Orihuela Costa, which he has publicly emphasised he supports on many previous occasions.

ALOE VERA - A sunburn soother that can be grown at home Aloe vera is a succulent evergreen perennial plant, with over 500 different species, which store water in their short stemmed leaves, serrated with small teeth. Originating from the Arabian Peninsula, aloe vera grows abundantly in tropical, semi-tropical, and arid climates, making it an ideal plant to grow on the Costa Blanca. To grow aloe vera you need bright, indirect sunlight in a well

drained location, as the plant does not appreciate sustained direct sunlight, which tends to dry out the plant too much, thus turning leaves yellow. Aloe vera plants are hardy, but lack of proper drainage can cause rot and wilting, it being the most common cause of death. Aloe vera require watering deeply, but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry at least 1"-2" deep, between waterings. Never let it sit in water. Mature aloe vera plants often produce offsets, or 'babies', which can easily be removed. Offsets can produce a plethora of new plants. Mature plants occasionally produce a tall flower spike - inflorescence - with dozens of tubular orange, pink yellow or red blossoms appearing, adding another level of interest to the aloe vera. Apart from it's stunning ornimental feature in your garden, it is cultivated for many medicinal uses. Aloe vera's slimy, water-filled 'gel' is widely used in the cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industry, as it contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants, most commonly used rubbed onto skin. Known as a treatment for sores, particularly burns, sunburn and antiaging effects on the skin. It also has strong laxative effects, making it useful to treat constipation. GARDEN FELIX Los Montesinos. NOW RE-OPEN. We look forward to seeing all our loyal and new customers. Keep safe.

Aloe has won over many home gardeners for its hardiness and tolerance of forgetful waterers

Air travel safest form of public transport during Covid-19 - ALA By Andrew Atkinson With commercial flights set to resume in June, the Spanish Airlines Association (ALA) reports that travelling by aeroplane is the safest form of public transport amid Covid-19 - citing atmospheric filtering. All airports, ports and borders have been closed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown since mid-March, with airlines reporting flights are scheduled to return next month. and travel in some regions under social distancing measures being enforced. The announcement of lockdown easing measures, which came into effect on May 13, PMJohnson said: “You can sit in the sun in your local park, you can drive to other destinations,

you can even play sports, but only with members of your own household.” Councils urged the public to keep social distancing, and issued reminders that many facilities, like outdoor pools and public toilets, remain closed. Police were spotted patrolling a number of parks, to ensure people were abiding by the guidance. People are allowed to travel

for exercise, however many tourist hotspots have asked people to stay away, and warned that attractions will remain closed. Coastal towns also issued warnings, reminding people that the majority of beaches are not currently lifeguarded, although sea swimming, paddle boarding, surfing, windsurfing, rowing, kayaking and canoeing are all now permitted as daily exercise in England.

The ALA said aeroplanes use a HighEfficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter system in the cabin, eliminating 99.9% of bacteria and viral and fungal particles in the atmosphere. Torrevieja resident arrested for faking his own kidnap

Large municipalities adopt measures to favour pedestrians Alicante will limit speed on one lane roads in each direction to 30 per hour, and Elche and Orihuela will close more streets to traffic More and more municipalities in the province are expanding measures in favour of pedestrians with the aim of reduction, or even removing road traffic in the post-covid 19, following the recommendation of experts who want to encourage travel on foot or by bicycle. This is the case in the provincial capital, Alicante, which is implementing the so-called "City 30", with speed reductions and far more pedestrianisation in the centre. The Mayor, Luis Barcala, yesterday signed a decree implementing the model on Saturday. "The aim is to promote a more sustainable and safe mobility for people, as this crisis is forcing us to make changes in habits in cities, travelling on foot, by bicycle or in personal mobility vehicles, compared to the highly pollutant motorised private vehicle". The goal, he said, is to apply this measure to 80% of the streets. Since March, the reduction in vehicle mobility in Alicante has reached 78%, according to Traffic, which shows the high degree of compliance with confinement. Elche will also proceed to stop the movement of vehicles on some roads in the centre from next weekend. The measure that was announced on Saturday by the councillor for Sustainable Mobility, Esther Díez, is to introduce wide spaces which will guarantee pedestrian movement during de-escalation, thus ensuring the physical distance required to prevent the spread

of the coronavirus.. On Saturdays and Sundays, from 8am to 11pm, la avenida de Jubalcoi will be pedestrianised; along with la calle Capitán Antonio Mena (the section between la avenida Alcalde Ramón Pastor and la calle Enrique Piré García); la Corredora; la avenida Ausiàs March (between la plaza Barcelona and la avenida de la Libertad); and la calle José García Ferrández (between the intersection of las calles José Bernard Amorós and Pedro Moreno Sastre to la plaza Madrid). Orihuela is introducing a project to close 14 roads in the old town for a good part of the day. The measure is adopted with the consultation of all groups and involves "freeing" 50,000 square metres for pedestrians, avoiding crowds, reducing noise and gaining additional space for terraces and sports. This closures will take place within limited time bands "so as not to hinder traffic or ordinary commerce," explained Mayor Bascuñana. The hours for the pedestrianisation of these streets are from Monday to Thursday from 8pm to 11.30pm and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 11.30pm

Former mayor of Orihuela dies aged 85 The Orihuela City Council has declared a day of official mourning following the death on Monday of D. Manuel Monzón, mayor of Orihuela from 1966 to 1970. Monzón held the Oriolan mayoralty for four years, after which he became president of the Alicante Provincial Council from 1970 to 1975. Although only released early afternoon, Wednesday 20 May will be a day of official

mourning with the flags of the municipal buildings flying at half-staff. "We regret the loss of the Oriolan Manuel Monzón, who will be remembered by the Oriolans for his time as mayor of this city for four years," said the mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, who has conveyed his condolences to relatives on behalf of the Municipal Corporation and the town of Orihuela.

The Civil Guard has arrested a resident of Torrevieja for reporting that he had been kidnapped, in order to gain sympathy from his wife. At 4am last Wednesday morning the man presented himself the Guardia Civil saying that two men, which he thought to be East European, had stopped his vehicle and threatened him with a knife. He was then forced to drive to a secluded location, between La Mata and Guardamar. Once there, the two individuals stole the 800 euros from him, all the time threatening him with the knife, so that he would give them more money.

He told the police that they tied him up, put a bag over his head leaving him in the car, which was owned by a friend, taking the keys and breaking his mobile phone, to prevent him asking ask for help. The investigation was carried out by the Judicial Police but after more than half an hour touring the area and the numerous inconsistencies and contradictions in his statement, he finally broke down and confessed to agents that had invented the whole story to gain sympathy from his wife. Premier League clubs returned to training - in a bid to complete the 2019-20 campaign - ahead of the season restarting, touted as during June, amid COVID-19 lockdown. Championship clubs have been told to hold fire by the EFL - until May 25. The first Premier League steps to return to training went ahead on May 19. Manchester United returned to their Carrington HQ, for their first training session in over two months, on May 20. Players including Angel Gomes, Fred, Harry Maquire, Scott McTominay, Tahith Chong, Phil Jones, Mason Greenwood, Nemanji Matic and

assistant manager Mike Phelan were among the initial pocket of arrivals. Players' arrivals are between staggered times for their first sessions, in small pods. United returned at their Carrington HQ for the first time since March 13. Premier League clubs voted unanimously for players to return to training, with social distance throughout, among UK Government legislation during coronavirus.

FC Barcelona has forecast that it will suffer a drop of about €154m in revenues this season, maybe as much as €260m, while Real Madrid says that they are close to losing €100m of income, even in the best case scenarios, although that figure could eventually reach €230m. Major leagues will also be financially affected with a loss of revenue approaching €4bn and the losses are likely to continue into next year. LaLiga puts the cost of the coronavirus impact at €600 million. A study by KPMG even highlights devaluation in the transfer prices of players of between 13 and 20%, although many people would agree that’s no bad thing. According to a Deutsche Bank report, clubs could earn 30% less this current season with an even greater deficit, as much as 48%, next year. Barça and Madrid, are the two most economically affected clubs in Spain. Without a vaccine, the clubs risk losing 48% of their turnover, which translates to 450 million for the Catalans and 400 million for Madrid. Most of the numbers relate to this season, but losses from the pandemic would continue the following year. To be able to open the stadiums to

the public, although with less capacity, the clubs would lose income of between 4% and 13% due to the lower sale of tickets. There would also be a decrease in advertising and sponsorship. “The television rights would have to be renegotiated with a reduction of at least 20%, since the draw would not be as good if matches are played in empty stadiums; Ticketing revenues, which on average represent 15% of the turnover of the 20 major European clubs, would be completely lost, "says the report. Without a vaccine, clubs would see their income reduced by at least 27%. For Atlético de Madrid the report predicts a decrease in income this year of between 50 and 110 million euros, while the following season would be exposed to a reduction of between 10 and 155 million. One of the most immediate consequences for football, according to The Football Observatory, will be a 28% decrease in the value of the transfer market, which will fall from 32.7 billion to 23.4 billion. In fact, a study by the consultant KPMG says that the transfer price of footballers has already been devalued since February by between 13% and 20% Against this background, Deutsche Bank predicts that the clubs will have to take drastic measures: “They will have to find injections of capital from shareholders, loans or the cashing in of bonds, some will be forced to sell assets and make salary cuts for their staff.”

Man U players showered at home after training, under strict rules, after undergoing tests for COVID-19 at their Carrington HQ on May 17. The Premier League has not announced a date when fixtures will resume. Championship clubs were looking to return to training on May 18, now on hold until May 25.

Having played under the umbrella of the covid-19 safety protocol for a few weeks it is clear that by far the biggest single factor is buggies with single occupancy because most of the local resident golfers are retired and now find it difficult to walk 18 holes and this problem will only get worse as the temperatures rise during the summer months. A number of the courses have responded by reducing the prices for single occupancy buggies and are allowing a buggy to carry two sets of clubs so at least the walker is not pulling or pushing a trolley for 18 holes BUT the feedback from potential clients is that this in many cases still makes golf too expensive for them. Until the air bridge is recommenced, which allows tourist flights between European countries, the courses will be heavily reliant on the local resident golfer and so the courses need to be further proactive in this issue and may need to consider fitting screen partitions within the buggy space to allow the use of shared buggies. the second are delivering their bowls the two skips have been at the other end positioning the jack to the centre line and directing play in general.

Rule 13.1 Possession of the rink will belong to the player or team whose bowl is being played. 13.2 As soon as each bowl has come to rest, possession of the rink will transfer to the opposing player or team after allowing time for marking a toucher as soon as it comes to rest.

With good skips a close relationship is developed with the second, as with the lead, and he will have a good idea of his skills. An understanding or “reading of the head “ is a great advantage for the second as he will have assist with the skip’s delivery after his own. The head is changing all the time now as the opposition will be trying to promote or take out some of your teams bowls. It’s always a disappointment when you see your bowl sitting on the jack nudged out but that’s the game. We need to talk a bit about the rink and possession of it. First something to clarify. Below is an update on the situation at local golf courses:

When the second has played his bowls the lead and second change ends so that the skip can deliver the final three bowls. We need to look at the rule mentioned last week again with a view to its impact at the head end.

It is important now as this also means whilst the player is on the mat the skip has possession of the head and he alone can stand by the jack. The opposing skip must stay back out of the head. The head is defined as any bowls in play or any marked bowl or jack in the ditch. This means that by the rules the opposing skip should step out of the rink onto the bank, but for practical reasons, he normally stands well back so he does not obstruct his opposite number. On the change of the end for delivery of the skip’s bowls the second takes the place of the skip and can come up to the jack to direct play or advise the skip. All other players must, by the rules, stay out of the rink, as mentioned before again, it is normally not practical and they should stay as far

back as possible. However when playing second I have experienced several times that the opposing second has come up to stand alongside me or in a position to obstruct me standing close to the jack whilst giving directions or advice to my skip. When diplomatically asking them to move back they have stated they are entitled to stand 1.5 metres from the jack(as per the rules) in fact a pompous lady “declared” after playing for 40 years and she had always done it. Again, at another club I had the same problem and excuse from an ex member of my club who, after I diplomatically requested him to stand back, quoted the same 1.5 metres and then started to rant that I was spoiling his game. On both occasions I just got on with it and made no complaint, as I was not sure of the rules. But after speaking to one of my club umpires and the club captain I was assured there was no such rule and since doing these takes and reading the rules I can say “THERE IS NO SUCH 1.5 METRE RULE” it is just gamesmanship! If it happens to you, or any other action you think is not correct, talk to your skip and he will sort it out. Don’t let them get away with it. Next week I will do a take on the skip and some other rules. Take care. Vistabella Bowls Club is sponsored by: Venture Fleet Services, TV Choice, Oneway Services, Serenity Insurance, Carpet Heaven. PROMOTION AND RELEGATION IN EFL Quote: 'Strong desire to remain as faithful as possible to the regulations and ensure consistency in the approach adopted in all divisions' EFL chairman, Rick Parry By Andrew Atkinson The English Football League (EFL) has recommended that promotion and relegation should take place - in the Championship, League 1 and League 2 - regardless of whether clubs vote, or have voted, to curtail the campaign. Championship clubs return to training on May 25. The EFL proposal has to be endorsed by the clubs. League 2 clubs have agreed to end the 2019-20 season; League 1 counterparts are to decide whether to continue. Championship clubs, with the exception of Hull

City, are giving the green light to restart fixtures. The majority of clubs have returned to training, with a provisional games' resumption in the third week of June. The EFL said 51% of clubs in League One or the Championship would need to agree to any curtailment of their campaigns. The final table would be decided by an unweighted points-per-game system - and play-offs involving no more than four teams, should take place. The EFL blueprint challenges the declared preference of League 2 clubs, that Stevenage be spared relegation to the National League, confirming Swindon Town, Crewe Alexandra and Plymouth Argyle look set for automatic promotion to League 1. “There is a strong desire to remain as faithful as possible to the regulations and ensure consistency in the approach adopted in all divisions,” said the

If the continuation of the League 1 season commences, twice-weekly coronavirus testing will have to be undertaken - mandatory - under the EFL’s return-to-play protocols.

Championship clubs are undergoing initial mandatory tests at their training grounds, with the option of saving approximately £1,300 a week, by asking players to conduct subsequent swab tests at home, or enlisting backroom staff, to conduct prior to training sessions.

he EFL will return to training from today, May 25, after the UK Government's approval in the midst of the 2019-20 season coming to a halt due to coronavirus lockdown.

At a meeting of the EFL on May 13 fingers were pointed at certain Championship clubs - allegedly breaking protocol rules - with accusations made that some had already returned to training during lockdown. Heated talks flared up with Championship bosses reportedly accusing certain clubs of holding group training sessions - without the EFL’s approval. However, none of the clubs confessed to the accusations of holding private group training sessions before being allowed to do so.

completed, but we are looking forward to getting back," said Neil, who took Norwich City to the Premier League during his time at The Canaries.

At the meeting the EFL reminded clubs that they are not allowed to re-establish group training - until May 25 at the earliest.

"It is approximately eight weeks since we trained. That's the most I remember a player having off - that’s a difficulty in itself," said Neil.

Leeds and WBA are in automatic promotion places, with Fulham, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Preston North End all in the playoff spots.

“With the uncertainty, naturally as a player you switch off. When the season is ongoing and you have big games coming up, mentally you need to prepare for them.

Preston North End are sixth in the table, aiming to bag the overall £100 million promotion package to reach the Premier League.

“Getting players switched back on mentally - along with getting their bodies ready physically - is going to be a tough job.

"After two months of COVID-19 restrictions we are looking forward to getting back," said Deepdale boss Alex Neil, ready to return to training at their Springfields training HQ.

"Especially with the restrictions in the first week or so of training. At present we are being advised there will be no friendlies, leading into games.

Neil said "We were working on the basis of returning to training on May 16, but that, as we all know, has had to be moved due to everything that needed to be put in place."

Meanwhile the The EFL Board met on Wednesday to consider the feedback and subsequent implications of the Divisional Club meetings and has finalised the draft framework that would be adopted into EFL Regulations, in the event a division is to make the decision to curtail its season. Clubs are now required to give the matter further consideration, before the Board formally proposes the appropriate Regulation changes, which will then be voted on by all Clubs.

“However it is good to know when we are back - I hope it is not going to change again," said Neil. "Given the time frame we are really limited of getting the season
