Nutritionists find serious deficiencies in school menus
As canteens reopen for the new school year the Association of Nutritionists has said that the Consell must limit the bidding for school meal contracts, only to those companies that comply with the provision of a healthy meal, whilst at the same time Dietitians are requesting that school
canteens receive regular inspections and audits. With school meals being served from the first day of term, community nutrition professionals belonging to the Official College of Dietitians and Nutritionists are already warning of serious food deficiencies in many school canteens. CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE SCHOOL MENUS Inma Girba, a member of the healthy dining room commission of the Official College of Nutritionists, says that "In the preparation of their menu’s a large number of contractors are using criteria that deviate from healthy eating." She adds that the analysis made by nutritionists in this regard reveals "serious nutritional imbalances." More than half of all Primary students eat in the school dining room and nutritionists warn that the menus do not provide the correct amount of carbohydrates, proteins, fats, water, vitamins and minerals that are required. Luis Cabañas, secretary of the official school of nutritionists, adds that, as a result of all this, more controls are required with the composition of school menus so that they meet minimum nutritional requirements, in which eggs, fresh vegetables and legumes which have "very little content in some menus, with a much lower consumption than desired.” Inma Girba added that following a study carried out in schools throughout the Community they found an excess of pasta, white flour, rice and dairy products and sugar. "All of these dietary imbalances, together with the increase in sedentary lifestyle, contributes to a progressive increase in weight that is accompanied by a
growing amount of tooth decay.” Nutritionists say that the incidence childhood obesity is close to epidemic proportions while Association President, Paula Crespo, says that "The Valencian Community is the third in the country with the highest number of obese children." They therefore emphasise the need for much stricter control by the Public Administration which include regular audits of school dining rooms and the requirement that the tendering for dining services be limited to those companies that meet the requirements of a healthy diet. When approached by the local press many schools and dining room contractors refuse to comment with all of them preferring to attribute the high rates of childhood obesity in the Community to an excessive sedentary lifestyle rather than the food that children receive in dining rooms. One teacher told The Leader that she often watches at the gates as children leave school. “You see them taking cakes, crisps and fizzy drinks from their satchels almost as soon as they are off the school premises.” She added that “during one school excursion last term many of the children complained that they had to walk, as they had become accustomed to going everywhere by car.”

Lifeguards accuse employers of Labour Exploitation Lifeguard Professionals employed in private pools say that they have had enough of the uncertainty and the instability of their situations, in many cases "without a contract and with unacceptably low salaries" The patience of those lifeguards who are employed in the swimming pools of private urbanisations is coming to an end. They say that the increasingly frequent cases of labour exploitation and the "deplorable" conditions in which they have to work has got to stop. Many of the workers and former workers in the sector say that they are not prepared to reveal their identity for fear of reprisals. They say that the trend of the network of private management companies, which has now been followed for several years is to hire people who are younger and vastly inexperienced, the reward for which is to pay them with "miserable" wages, well below the minimum agreement. Whilst a trained worker would charge a minimum of 7.5 euros per hour, the salaries offered to first responders barely exceed 4 euros. A spokesman for the Lifeguards said that they are absolutely infuriated when these amounts are offered to people with qualifications and many years of experience, which they are sad to say are occasionally accepted, because the only alternative is for the lifeguard to be out of work. However, the professional organisation El Colegio de
Administradores de Fincas said that they "have no record" of these situations occurring in any of the urbanisations that are managed by their administrators. They add that their function is to ensure that first responders "have the appropriate licenses and training" and that they are contractually insured, but "what happens in the urbanisations that do not have an authorised and registered property manager" is out of their control. The spokesman for lifeguard professionals said that the actions of such unregistered companies are “intolerable” pointing out that their uncaring actions are reducing the reputation and the effectiveness of a sector that is “in charge of security and assistance to the users of our swimming pools”. But this doesn’t happen only in those urbanisations with only a small communities of owners, but in well-known urbanisations in Alicante, Playa de San Juan, Mutxamel and Santa Pola, where are forced to work much longer hours on tasks for which they are not employed. Some lifeguards have said that they suffered occupational accidents due to the "awful state" of the equipment with which they have to operate, and that the employer "has ignored what has happened"; causing serious problems for the integrity of workers, often leading to threats and insults by users of the pools. In addition, they say that many swimming pools suffer from “a clear lack of maintenance and safety equipment, year after year.” They even claim that many urbanisations choose to "not empty the pools when human faeces are found" This situation has been confirmed by The Federation of Rescue and Lifeguard of the Valencian Community, who warn that "unless the government intervenes through labour inspections and soforth, this scenario will not be resolved."

Minesweeper Turia limps into Cartagena A week after it ran aground about 400 meters off the coast of La Manga, while searching for remains of the plane piloted by Commander Francisco Marín, who died when he crashed into the sea, the Naval Minesweeper 'Turia' was finally towed to the port of Cartagena, where it arrived shortly before midnight on Tuesday. The Maritime Rescue ship 'Mastelero' was responsible for moving the vessel, following the installation of a system of external and internal floats by divers from both the Navy and from the specialised company Ardentia Marine, which finished at around three o'clock in the afternoon. The ship was initially pulled off the rock formation that has been its berth for the last seven days before being towed at a reduced speed by the 'Mastelero', which was accompanied by the patrol boat 'Infanta Cristina'. The 'Turia' entered the Catragena Naval facilities late on Tuesday night, where it will now be inspected, prior to repairs being carried out to approximately ten metres of the damaged hull yhat caused the flooding of several compartments. The ship lost two buoys during the crossing, which forced the journey to Cartagena to be delayed.
The Navy made the first attempt to refloat the vessel on Monday morning, but due to the rough seas, the work was delayed to the following day. The final decision to move the Turia was taken by technicians from the Spanish-Dutch firm in charge of the operation on Tuesday at noon, but the journey was not without setbacks. As the ship travelled around the Islas Hormigas, two of the floats disengaged. That delayed the journey while the problems were resolved after which it continue without further difficulties to the port. The funeral of Commander Francisco Marín, pilot and instructor of the General Air Academy (AGA), was held last Thursday, in the strictest privacy. Many tributes have been paid to the pilot since the fatal accident, with his colleagues at the Academy saying that he will always been remembered. Residents of La Manga have placed a memorial in his honour at kilometre 4, in the Galua, where the incident occurred and Atlético de Madrid held a minute’s in his memory with the players wearing black armands at their last game. Meanwhile, a group of people have launched a request on the change.org platform for Corvera airport to be renamed 'Comandante Francisco Marín'.

With effect from 1 September unaccompanied minors, or those travelling with third parties, must carry with them a travel permit signed by their parents and verified by the authorities..
In addition to their ID or passport, all young people must now have a signed declaration of travel, a form that can be obtained from the Police, the Civil Guard, courts, notaries, town halls or consulates. In July, the Ministry of the Interior issued an instruction to increase the security of young people with which it intends to protect them from kidnap or trafficking as well as increasing the protection of their personal data. The instruction, issued by the Secretary of State for Security, unifies the control systems at the border posts and details the way by which checks must carried out before children can either leave or enter a country. Whilst the Spanish press report that the form and regulations are also accessible on a number of government websites they also state that, In the case of foreign minors residing in Spain, their legal representatives must go to their consular authorities to complete the documentation.
From 1 September 2019, Spanish minors and foreign minors resident in Spain under the age of 18 years old may need written authorisation by a parent or legal guardian if a minor is travelling unaccompanied, with a third party or other circumstances. This is in addition to a valid travel document.

HOW TO MAKE A PENSION LAST A LIFETIME: ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO FINANCIAL SUCCESS IN RETIREMENT Four years ago, the Government brought in a rule change that had dramatic consequences for retirees. The reforms, known as 'pension freedoms', gave savers unprecedented flexibility around how they spend their hardearned cash in retirement.
While this is still an option — and for many people a wise choice — those who feel confident managing their own investments can instead now opt for something called drawdown, where you keep your money invested in shares and funds and take out an income as and when you need it.
But with that freedom comes a huge responsibility to ensure you do not run out of money and end up living on the poverty line in old age.
There is an alternative to managing your own funds, and that is where Seagate Wealth are on hand to help you make the right choices for you and your family.
Before the rule change, most people simply bought an annuity, which is like an insurance policy that guarantees to provide a set income for life.

The Cost of Motorway Tolls A lthough many drivers do pay the fee for travelling on the toll road network in Spain, there are many, many more who choose not to. Some areas have already seen the liberation of these roads, with others promised in the near future, but what is the real impact of allowing us all to save a few euro? As the summer is coming to a close, areas such as the long-suffering N-332 as it passes through Torrevieja will be able to breathe a little once again, as the seasonal influx dies down. As an added bonus, the toll road which circles the town will also be reduced soon, as it is every year, to the discounted winter price. The toll booths at La Zenia on the Orihuela Costa
At the moment, there is no sign of the toll road which serves Zenia Boulevard becoming free, a contentious topic which many believe would solve all of the problems of congestion in one go, but at a cost we may not realise. Parts of the AP-7 to the north of Alicante will become toll free from 1 January, 2020, or at least free for the drivers who choose to use it. The outcome however will be far deeper than the few euro saved on each trip, according to analysis of the economic impact. We must remember that the toll roads are operated by private companies. These companies were involved in the initial investment and construction, and pay for the upkeep. They also pay their dues just like any other business, and ask any business owner of the cost of running their operation, however large or small it may be, and they will tell you in great detail how much they hand over in tax, insurance, running costs, wages, etc.
Although a lot of the money they hand over may seem like a burden to a business, a lot of it comes back to us. As we look at the AP-7 section near Alicante, the overall loss to the state, which ultimately funds us all, will be 150 million euro annually, according to the Valencia Chamber of Commerce. That loss includes social security income, IVA, and even the local taxes we all pay which go direct to the municipalities which the road runs through. According to the accounts presented by the company which runs the section, Aumar (a subsidiary of Abertis), their turnover stands at around 356 million euro annually. Yes, that does mean that drivers are paying a lot of money to use the road, sometimes as much as 37.35 euro per trip in fact, but 43% of their income goes straight out to the state and local administrations. Of the 150 million they hand over, 30 million goes to the municipalities where the road operates through the IBI tax system (colloquially known as Suma in many places, after the name of the agency employed to collect the fees). Villa-real for example receives 180,000 euro for their part, which the town hall can then invest in the municipality as it sees fit (within reason). It is perhaps no surprise that the town hall at Villa-real is not happy. To lose 180,000 euro revenue, on top of what they have already lost through the austere times, will have an impact on the local services they can provide. If the AP-7 around La Zenia were to become free, Orihuela is one of the areas that would lose the revenue that IBI brings in, a small portion maybe, but a contribution from every single driver who passes through the area. It is not only the Chamber of Commerce who are pointing out the “bigger picture” of the financial impact. Seopan, a national association of construction companies and concessionaires, did their own report. They say that the elimination of the tolls, where the contracts end this year, will result in an annual reduction of 450 million to the public coffers. Their figures combine the area north of Alicante, and the Barcelona-
Tarragona section, which expires in 2021, the AP-1 Burgos-Armiñón (free since the end of November 2018), the AP-4 Sevilla-Cádiz, and the AP-2 Zaragoza-Mediterranean. Furthermore, Ineca, the Institute of Economic Studies of Alicante, estimated that the end of the toll would generate an initial social acceptance but medium and long-term budgetary complications, translated into 326 million when the administration assumes all costs. Of course there is a plus side to the individual. When the areas become free of tolls we can drive without paying directly, like drivers looking for a trip to the beach at Dénia saving around 18 euro, for example, or motorists covering the entire region who will see a direct saving of about 37 euro per trip. Then there are the heavy goods vehicles, transporting everything from our online purchases to our food and drink. HGV operators are set to save around 1,900 euro per vehicle per year, although quite whether those saving will be handed down to the consumer remains to be seen (yes, we know it´s extremely doubtful). Either way, the liberation of the toll road network is something that has been demanded for many years, with the apparent reluctance from some town halls to get behind the calls, but now we can perhaps see some of the reasons why. What might seem like a saving in the short term may only be a sticking plaster for the future, as the local authorities would take a hit on income, some of which may well be used to service local roads, and so although the traffic in many areas might decrease, it doesn´t necessarily translate to a brighter future.

Torrevieja to double aid to school transport The Torrevieja council has said that it will double the resources allocated to the 2020 budget for the provision of aid in the free busing for families of students who live less than three kilometres from school. The announcement was made by the Councillor for Education, Ricardo Recuero.
These new points are in addition to those already in use in la Avenida Doctor García Rogel, Avenida de La Vega, Calle del Río, as well as 2 locations on the Orihuela Costa (C / Fuego de Aguamarina, Paseo del Mar in La Zenia), and in the Puente Alto Industrial Estate.
He explained that the current PP government is currently working with the budget allocated by the previous executive in which 897,000 euros is included in transport subsidies. This is help that will be extended in next year’s budget with the intention of benefiting more families.

chairs to move from the road and onto the pavement make it impossible for those with any form of mobility device. This issue is a daily obstacle for resident Julio J. Romero, with reduced mobility and who depends on an electric wheelchair for his movement due to the degenerative disease from which he suffers. He says that the high curbs "are insurmountable,” and that “the planners must believe that the disabled have 4x4 chairs.” The City Council says that it is aware of the situation and it is on the table of projects to resolve.
The current beneficiaries of school transport subsidies are those families who are considered to be in a situation of social emergency, currently 57 families at risk. However, there are many more who find it difficult to pay the 57 euros per month that school transport costs for those who live less than three kilometres. The intention of the new PP government team is to double or almost triple the beneficiaries of these grants, beyond cases of social emergency, with several lines of subsidies for different groups based on the applications received. There are two ways being considered; either to grant aid according to the distance that students have to travel or based on the financial resources of the applicants. "We are studying the methods used by other cities to see what is the most appropriate way to meet the needs of families," says Recuero. Lack of disabled access denounced in La Torre Getting around many of the streets in the Pilareña district of La Torre de la Horadada can be a really difficult task for those who have reduced mobility and who need the use of a wheelchair to get from one place to another. The Councillor for Infrastructure, Rufino Lancharro, insists that a plan is being put in place to resolve many of the problems with the mayor stating that they will be presented in the 2020 budgets. He said that “we must ensure that we do everything we can to make the municipality as a whole much more accessible.”
The Minister for the Environment, Teresa Ribera, has held a meeting with the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Environment of the Region of Murcia, Antonio Luengo, to discuss the problem of the Mar Menor and its situation of environmental deterioration. She said that the Government’s plan to achieve 'zero discharge' in the Mar Menor has been given the green light so that administrations can now begin to act in the recovery of the coastal lagoon through 21 different measures which will cost between 430 and 615 million euros. According to the draft presented last year, Ribera said that the goal of 'zero discharge' has an initial cost of 615 million and an execution period of ten years. She said that the plan will now strengthen the joint action of the administrations to reverse the environmental deterioration of the Mar Menor.
Multi million euro plan to save the Mar Menor Seven new charging points for electric vehicles The Councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, announced that Orihuela has received a subsidy for the installation of 7 charging points for electric vehicles that will be installed around the municipality. The grant, received from the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE), amounts to 38,765 euros, providing that it is matched with a contributon of 8,691 euros from the council, about 20% of the total. The councillor said "With the addition of these new points we encourage the use of electric vehicles in our municipality, thus reducing pollution." Aparicio said they will be installed at Playa Flamenca (C/ Picasso), San Bartolomé (C/ Juan Carlos I), Torremendo (Calle Polideportivo), Desamparados (C/Las Escuelas), La Aparecida (C/ Las tres margaritas), La Murada (C/ Siete de julio), y en el casco de Orihuela, (C/Conchita Martínez Marín).
At a meeting in Madrid Luengo said that he considered it “intolerable that we have been waiting for more than a year to start the most ambitious and necessary package of actions for its definitive recovery,” adding that “one of the first projects to be carried out will be to look at the serious deterioration suffered by the lagoon in the area of Los Urrutias, which has raised the protests of many local residents.”

This is it, folks. Your favourite columnist has hit the bigtime! This will come as no surprise to our 1.37M fans. (Give or take a few!) The big announcement will come in a moment - and the news will hopefully trigger a raise from the editor. YCBS on its own is already worth what you pay for this newspaper.
Truth is we all make mistakes and I have made more than my share. Most turned out OK in the wash, but there are still a few I would have loved a second shot at. That being said, we are all in extremely exalted company when we make mistakes.
After writing four books, and with little more than modest success, we at last find my name in a hardcover book selling all over the world. Read on please …
This unfortunate scribe is not the only writer the publishers got it wrong about. Harry Potter was rejected twelve times before a publisher agreed to accept the book. JK Rowling went on to earn a cool $1BN.
Belgian and world renowned author, Gerd de Ley has penned a number of exceptionally popular books; including, ‘Great American Humour’, ‘African Proverbs’, and ‘Cowboy Wisdom.’ His latest book is called, ‘Irish wit, Wisdom & Humour’. Inside are quotes from GBS, Swift, Wilde, Joyce, Yeats, and many more. It is the ‘many more’ we are talking about here. This is important for those of you who boast about knowing the writer of YCBS. Nestled half way down on P69 of Gerd de Ley’s book is a quote attributed to one Bernie Comaskey. I knew nothing about it until a lady, having purchased the book, wrote me from London. That I knew nothing about it should be good for a hefty lawsuit against the publishers; and this coupled with a meaty increase in my value-added remuneration from ‘The Leader’, could mean that my days of being an impoverished small farmer are numbered.

Donald Trump makes a dozen mistakes every day. He made the mistake recently of assuming he could buy Greenland from Denmark – as if the largest island in the world was as available as a long-horn Texas steer. His naivety on this one probably was influenced by the mistake that Russia made in selling Alaska to America for two cents an acre. We all regard the Dutch as being shrewd business people, but there was nothing shrewd about them when they discovered Australia a hundred years before the British. The Dutch expedition concluded that it was nothing but ‘a useless desert’ – and left it where it was!
To conclude on a less ruinous note: Decca Records turned down the Beetles. I hope the publisher who turned down my book is reading this!!
Nobody died due to those above mistakes. This was far from being the case when Archduke Ferdinand’s driver took a wrong turn and presented his charge at the feet of an assassin. This caused the First World War, and probably the WW2 as well. A big price to pay for one little mistake?

I wonder how did the guy who reduced the lifeboat numbers on the Titanic, because it was unsinkable, feel when she sunk. His answer could have been, ‘anyone can make a mistake.’
The quote in question and attributed to me comes from one of my ‘Don’t Forget’ and it is; “The Less you do, the less mistakes you make.” All I will say here is that Mr de Gey made a mistake in not paying me up front. Ah … OK so, maybe we have oversold ourselves here. All I managed to achieve was one line in the middle of someone else’s book!

Professionals call for extension of Lifeguards As the official summer season is set to come to a close next week, it ends as one of the bleakest for some years, with twice as many drownings in the region compared to last year. Up until the end of August, the official figure stood at 46 people losing their lives as a result of drowning at either the beaches or swimming pools in the area. Moreover, there is now concern amongst professionals that the situation will worsen as lifeguards are systematically withdrawn at the end of the season. The figures, and the warning, have been issued by the Real Federación de Salvamento y Socorrismo group. By the middle of August, the fatality rate already stood at 37 since the start of the season in June, an alarmingly high number, according to the federation´s statistics, but during the latter half of the month the situation escalated with a further 9 people losing their lives. In 2018, the total figure for the region stood at 26 deaths. Moreover, it is the beaches of the Valencia region which have seen the most dramatic increase in the whole of the country, surpassing those that occurred on the Andalucía and Catalan coasts. Most of the drownings in Valencia occurred in this, the Alicante area, specifically on the Costa Blanca, where 20 of the drowning occurred. According to the federation, 73% of cases of drowning occur when there is no surveillance. The most dangerous time slots are those in which the service is not active and there are no lifeguards. This is therefore more worrying when the season closes and the lifeguards are withdrawn, which has prompted the association to urge an extension on the service until mid-October. The federation would like each municipality to look at the services they provide on an individual basis, and focus on the needs of the area, rather than simply contracted supply based on the paper exercise of when the official season starts and ends. “In certain areas, if the season is extended, life-threatening risks could be avoided,” they say.

THREE YEARS TO FIX A FEW POTHOLES
Spain's showgirl Emma rocked as International horse show ends By Andrew Atkinson EXCLUSIVE
Despite claiming that the 150 metre stretch of road running at the side of the AP7, adjacent to the IES PLAYA FLAMENCA, is private property, a gang of workers from the Ayuntamiento was out on Thursday filling in the numerous potholes that the surface has accumulated following many years of neglect.
ONE of Spain's most respected Rocko sits on top of Cowboy, with Emma in showgirls Emma Tytherleigh has Germany. been rocked by the news that the International horse show Gefahrten Des Lichts at Cavalluna Park in Germany has unexpectedly ceased.
Attracting frequent manifestations by members of the public, by CLARO and by the Parents Association of the Secondary School, all of whom regularly demonstrate their concern for the safety of the children, the road has seen absolutely no maintenance in years.
"For financial reasons beyond the company's control our time is rapidly coming to an end at Cavalluna Park," said Emma, who showcased in Spectacular Flamenco shows in the Costa Blanca.
Since the school first opened in the 2016/17 academic year, when it attracted hundreds of additional daily users, the road has been dogged with large craters and potholes. There are no kerbs to the road, which dropped off quite alarmingly at the edges, and the situation as the children made their way to the school entrance could be quite scary with drivers of motorcycles, cars, coaches and other heavy vehicles winding their way along the road, zigzagging around the potholes, in order to avoid the many ruts and depressions and likely damage to their vehicles. Well finally it seems as though the new Council has gone at least part of the way to improving the road by filling in the holes and shoring up the edges, but although it is rather better, it is still in a sorry state. Just about wide enough for a school bus the road is still far too narrow for vehicles to pass with the result that one, if not both of the vehicles, have to drive off the steep edge and on to the dirt. Neither is there any pavement so it can still be quite dangerous for those who arrive and depart on foot, and with children leaving the school en masse, the road is often filled with vehicles travelling in all directions. Residents have said on many occasions that, if it is a private plot, the council must expropriate it as a matter of urgency, and then upgrade the road and its environs to a condition where it is ‘fit for use’ so that the children of the Orihuela Costa have a safe route to and from school and they no longer have to dodge the traffic as they arrive and they leave their classes.
Emma, who is awaiting to see what the future holds, said: "They cannot continue and the new show will not be produced." Emma's beloved dog, Rocko, only arrived in Germany last month, exclusively reported by the Leader, following a trip from Spain, to be trained to perform in the Munich show. The work was completed just prior to the return to school
Rocko had been a star attraction with international trick-rider Emma, notably in Torremendo, Alicante. "We hope to find a solution for the long term, but for now it looks like we are on the road again," said show Director and Artist Emma. A statement from Showplast Munchen (Munich) said: "After two wonderful years, unfortunately we have sad news. "The show 'Companions of Light' (Gefahrten Des Lichts) will not take place at the Show Palace Munich, of which we regret. "We hope to continue with the show, in the near future."

With the hood down, Fred was able to relax in the back of the car, during leisurely cruises around the villages. A Mr Bathe recollected: “I remember the car rides.
After a month they were released and made their way home, via Holland. The reason they were allowed to go, said Fred: “Was our inability to bear arms."

Fred was in Germany in 1914 -starring in a circus with 8ft German giantess, Brunhilde, when war broke out. In 1917, during the height of the Great War, it is claimed negotiations for two German dwarfs both under 2ft - were to be returned to the Fatherland from Britain, in exchange for Fred. The New York Times in September, 1914, reported: “Teddy Bobs was last heard of in Essen. He has an enormous appetite and is expected to aid his country, by reducing Germany’s food bank.” In the Daily Mail in September, 1914, they reported Fred was in Germany, as a member of a touring theatrical company. “With us were a giantess, midgets and a legless

Levante T20 success against LaMangaTorre CC
By Andrew Atkinson LaMangaTorre CC played double-header T20 fixtures against Levante - that ended in defeat in both encounters. In the first T20 game, LaMangaTorre CC scored 113-10 - with C. Hunt being the main batsman, knocking 38 runs, from 18 balls. Levante chased the total, with 6.5 overs remaining. Wickets were taken by LaMangaTorre CC, by Connor Wood and debutee G. Porter.
pneumonia.
In the second game, LaMangaTorre CC collasped, surviving to the 20-overs mark, with a score of 869.
It took eight men to lift him from his hotel bed and convey him to an ambulance, in a fire brigade jump sheet.
Skipper P. Harvery knocked 20 runs, off 44 balls, with C. Hunt managing a run a ball, chalking up 12 runs.
In the ambulance, Fred had to lie with his knees drawn-up - so they could shut the door.
Levante chase the lower total in the 15th over. LaMangaTorre CC's H. James made his mark, returning figures of 1-15, off 4 overs.
The hospital corridor wasn’t wide enough, so he was lifted up the fire escape - by an army of porters - before being tipped onto two connecting beds.
T. Rumi's attacking prowess claimed two wickets, for the loss of 17 runs, and Connor Wood getting a wicket Maiden, in his only over.
Tragically, Fred died on April 15, 1918, aged 29. It was while in Blackburn hospital Fred ate all the Ward's dinner one day, after the food trolley was left at the side of his bed, mistakenly thinking it was for himself! Fred was placed in a solid oak coffin, 9ft long and 20in deep. It took ten men to lower it down into a grave, which involved the excavation of ten tons of soil. Fred Kempster's gravestone, reads: 'Fred a likeable, kind hearted chap who coped well with his affliction - The British Giant'.

Former Donkey Derby jockey Billy Lee By Andrew Atkinson racing correspondent A MAN who boarded a bus in Dublin - with a donkey - could well have been heading to the 'Donkey Derby' in years gone by! A race of the ilk was run at Castledown: The Castledown Donkey Derby. The race came under starters orders for two decades, the nuance and idiosyncrasies of Irish society in rural Ireland. Jockey Billy Lee (inset) competed in the Castledown Donkey Derby, winning the race in 2002, under trainer and Grand National Red Rum fame winner, Tommy Stack. Lee, who rode over hurdles in the early noughties, was successful at Haydock Park on Wanango in a Listed hurdle race. Born in Ballingarry, County Limerick, Lee, who rode in the Castletown Donkey Derby in 1994, has carved out a career within Flat racing. Lee won his first Group 1 on Fiesolana, trained by Willie McCreery, in the Matron Stakes at the inaugural Irish Champions Weekend at Leopardstown in 2014. Lee rode Royal Ascot winner Settle For Bay, trained by David Marnane, in the Royal Hunt Cup
Handicap in 2018; also having been victorious on 2013 Britannia Handicap winner Tumu, trained by Joanna Morgan at Ascot. During August, Lee has returned to the winner's enclosure on a plethora of occasions, including Master Matt at The Curragh; and at Leopardstown on Drakensberg and Miss Jabeam. Lee was also successful at Naas, under 40-1 winner Thou Art Peter; Celtic Beauty and Raven's Cry. And on board One Cool Poet (twice) at Galway.

While we all have our views and opinions on the greatest golfer to ever play the game ,my personal opinion it is Jack Nicklaus not only for his tournament win record but the way in which he handled himself on and off the course so when he speaks you should listen and below are just a few of his famous quotes: The best golfer in the world only wins 20% of the time. Focus on remedies not faults. To be successful you need to manage yourself and the course. The older you get the stronger the wind gets and is always in your face. Air offers less resistance than dirt. Learn the basic fundamentals of the game and stick to them. Golf is a game not a war. Never quit or give up, whatever the situation. Don’t be too proud to take lessons. We all go through tough times. It takes hundreds of good shots to gain confidence and only one bad one to lose it. Don’t shy away from pressure embrace it. Never lose your temper and always keep your head. I am sure that every golfing reader of this article can relate to most of these quotes in someway and apply them to your game.

El Plantio 2 Golf Society The first hole on El Plantio 9-Hole course carries a 17 and 18 Handicap and should, logically, be the easiest hole on the course. However six players had 2 shots each and none were successful in landing on the green. Therefore, the nearest the pin prize was left unclaimed with the other one being claimed by eventual joker competition winner – Alistair Douglas, who, the previous week had achieved a Hole-in-One on the first hole.

Silver cat winners
Maybe they had a hint that they’d find the course in great condition, with greens that were holding but fast and smooth to putt on. These seem to have confounded several members who had become used to slower surfaces during August. The only drawback of a large field is the time it takes to process the results but the staff at the Corner Flag in La Finca plaza looked after us very well. When the numbers had finally been crunched, it was clear that the higher handicappers found it hardest to score on a course that was playing long on most holes. Scores in each division certainly support this theory. In Bronze, Norman Padmore (25) finished fifth, followed home by Sandra Dibble (27), Mike Kaylor (27 on CB) and Ken Flaherty (28). First was deservedly won by Alan Maidment (31) whose sharp-shooting on the par 3s made the difference. Silver division saw Ivan Hanak (30), Norman Cahill (31) and Phil de Lacy (31 on CB) slog it out for the minor placings, with Bjorn Petterson (34) losing out to Rod Wilcox for top spot on countback. The Petterson dynasty also featured in Gold division, with Eva (32) taking fifth behind Darren Hancock (33), Mark Russell-Smith (34) and Barry Roehrig (34 on CB and local knowledge). First place went to Russell Bailey with 35 points … yes, he’s back and clearly still in need of a handicap revision. And a haircut. Brian Taylor was the best guest and also the top scorer on the day with a sub-par 37 points.
Thanks for joining us and congratulations on a very good round of golf. The nearest the pin awards - sponsored by The Property Shop - went to Simon Speak, Brian Taylor and Alan Maidment. Not content with winning on the 13th, Alan went on to double his haul on the 16th hole. That’s just showing off. Charles Jones perhaps likes black baseball caps and red wine which could explain why he was smiling wryly when presented with the Abacus award by sponsor Mike of Mike’s IPTV. Captain Tony Smale didn’t feature in the prizes this week, which is unusual. He’s probably saving himself for a last hurrah on his final Captain’s day at the end of this month. Keeping under the radar, you might say. Next week we’re at La Serena followed by Alenda on 18 September. We already have very full fields for both events but there are still a couple of places available. Book quick if you want to play! As always, to find out more about the Society and our upcoming events, visit our website www.smgs.org or give our Captain, Tony Smale, a call on 639 129 223.

"I'm looking forward to the new season and the opening game against Racing San Miguel," CF Sporting San Fulgencio star Dani told me. Sporting won the race to sign Dani in the summer, with Brazilian striker Vazquinho departing CD Montesinos, in a move to Racing. "There has been a lot of work undertaken during the summer and we aim to take the club forward, starting this season," said Lenny. 'Word has gone round Montesinos, Todo not a bad team' - coach Lenny Lenihan WORLD CUP winner Lenny Lenihan put the brakes on Todo Deportivo football team being the wooden spoon club in recent years - with a pre-season DRAW against San Miguel u19s. "Having conceded over 330 goals in the last three seasons - without winning a game - it underlined the 2-2 result against San Miguel u19s," Todo Deportivo new coach Lenny told me. The Los Montesinos, Alicante based club, in truth, were the laughing stock of the Valencia Regional FA - having won a handful of games

"To get a 2-2 result is huge and I'm really happy with it," said Lenny, 35, who has a UEFA 'B' coaching badge, at the Todo helm, with assistant coach Keith Nichol.

Bad day at the office as CD Thader suffer defeat Next weekend (check CD Thader facebook page for details), Thader are away at Orihuela 'B', for their 3rd Preferente league match of the season.
Thader CD ...................1 UD Rayo Ibense .............3 Following their great start to the season with a victory at University Alicante, Thader were looking forward to impressing in their opening home match against Rayo Ibense, who last season were playing their football in the 3rd division. Rayo started their campaign with a draw against Benferri, but Thader manager Jon Ortega knew that they would be a difficult proposition. A bumper crowd gathered inside Moi Gomez Stadium in great anticipation, but it didn't take long for the bubble to burst. The hosts started brightly, Victor looked to be fouled when through on goal with 5 mins on the clock, but alas the ref was unimpressed. Only 2 mins later, poor defending by Thader allowed Rayo to open the scoring. Failure to clear their lines, resulted in Navarae (complete with face mask which resembled super hero Zorro) latching on to a loose ball, before striking a powerful low drive past keeper Sergio at his near post. It got worse, for on 12 mins, the same man struck a beauty from 20 yards, giving Sergio no chance. Sergio then pulled off a great save on 18 mins, denying Rafa a 3rd Rayo goal. Unfortunately it only delayed the inevitable, for 2 mins later, Rafa's shot took a deflection before nestling in the back of the net. To say that Thader's players looked shell shocked,
is an understatement, but the visitors were good value for their lead, whilst Thader were in complete disarray. Victor did bring off 2 good saves from Rayo keeper Alfredo on 27 and 35 mins, but Thader's cutting edge, in evidence last week, was somehow missing. Just before the interval, Rafa Gomez came close, but a 0-3 deficit at half time was not a scoreline that coach Ortega would have envisaged. Lloyd set the scene in the 2nd half, his 30 yard shot on 50 mins, going straight down the throat of keeper Alfonso. Not to be denied, Thader's captain struck a glorious free kick from distance on 67 mins, which beat the wall before easing inside the top left hand corner. Although the game then degenerated into one of cynical fouls and yellow cards, Lloyd was shooting on sight, coming close on 78 mins, another long range effort which was well saved. From a similar position to which he had scored his goal, Lloyd rattled the upright on 88 mins, before the ball was scrambled to safety. Substitute Cabrera tested Alfredo in time added on, but alas it was too little too late, for a Thader side who need to become more alert in defence, if more defeats are to be averted.

GRAN ALACANT OLDIES WALKING FOOTBALL
SUDUKO SOLUTION
The club celebrated their 100th weekly session on Thursday 29th August. The picture is of the 15 players who took part on the day, plus Barry the founder and Jonathan our mascot. After the game, as usual, we all arrived at Bar Sioux for a wellearned drink, and the bar kindly supplied nibbles for us all. Thank you. We play every Thursday, we do not stop because it is too hot, or too wet, as all games are played indoors at the Gran Alacant indoor sports hall, all well under cover. The club started up over two years ago and weekly sessions see anything up to 20 players each week enjoying the non contact, non tackling, sessions where fitness can be improved week after week, with very little fear of getting hurt, which for the elderly players is very important. Many of our players come and go when they are here on Gran Alacant and we have Brits, Norwegian and Spanish players. All are welcome. We all play for fun, nothing taken too seriously, the idea is for our older players to have fun and get fit. The day after the 100thsession we had a get together at Lounged (one of our sponsors), where Joan laid on a wonderful buffet for us all and Lou was kept busy serving drinks. Around 20 players and families took part and were also entertained in the square by live music. Lots of drinks, lots of food and lots of chat among wonderful friends who players and family have now become. A big thank you all who keep turning up every week to make our club the success that it is.
Is Messi on his way to Spurs? Mauricio Pochettino recently joked that he would like Lionel Messi to join him at Spurs before he retires. Well now, because of a recently publicised clause in the Argentinean’s contract, the possibility is not the distant pipe-dream that many thought it was. Should he wish to do so, it seems that Messi will be allowed to leave Barcelona, the club he has served since the age of 13, on a free transfer next summer, and as a long-time admirer of the Spurs manager the north London Club could be one of his options. Although Messi has a further 12 month option on his contract with Barcelona he has made no secret of the fact that, at the age of 32, he wants to seek a new challenge, and having stated on Thursday that he wouldn’t wish to drop into a minor league, the only options that remain are Italy, France or the possiblity of joining his countryman Pochettino in the Premier League and North London.
