CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Guardamar expat couple get 8 years for smuggling drugs He came back with the 4 bags which were handed to him for later sale. The couple denied knowing they had drugs, which were contained inside the suitcase linings. However, in finding them guilty of smuggling the judges say that they considered the statement to be untrue. The NCA have not publicly revealed how they got the information the Clarkes could be carrying nine kilos of cocaine picked up in St Lucia although Vitor Ananais, who led the operation for the Policia Judiciaria, said “We knew who were looking for and we boarded the cruise ship with a search warrant.” It is thought that they acted following a tip off from Spanish police and the National Crime Agency, who have had the couple under surveillance. Ananais said that he believed they were smuggling the cocaine into UK for dealers who are probably based on the Costa del Sol According to reports in the Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha the pair were already known to police and both have criminal records in the UK. Court papers showed that the pair led a jet-set lifestyle with no obvious way of paying for it.

A friend of the couple, who lived in Guardamar del Segura, refused to be named but was quoted as saying: “In UK they were living in sheltered accommodation but decided to move to Spain about 4 years ago, because that is where all Roger’s family live. We are still all shocked by what has happened. They seemed such a nice normal couple.” Both were regulars at the Med Bar in El Raso where Roger, a former soldier, regularly played in the golf society. Roger and Sue Clarke, who were jailed in Norway in 2010 for trafficking 240kg of cannabis resin on another cruise, went on luxury cruises worth £18,000 in two years before their arrest despite living on just £885 a month. Their 33-night Caribbean cruise began in Tilbury, Essex, on November 5 last year. A fellow passenger said “They seemed just like any other couple — they just really, really enjoyed a drink, but who doesn’t?” he said. “I went ashore with them a couple of times and Roger paid for everything with cash. Even on the boat he would just get wads of cash out of his pocket. But they dodged all the photos, which is so odd for a cruise. Apart from that they were just a lovely couple who were having a good time in the sun.” The couple are now awaiting confirmation of the sentence although their defense lawyer has said already that she is considering an appeal.

From Primary school, children carry an average of 3.2 kilos, a figure that increases to 5 kilos or even more by the time they reach secondary education. To these loaded backpacks they must then add another bag carrying sportswear for at least two days a week. "Carrying more than three kilos behind your back generates bad postural positions that lead to problems and diseases," says the traumatologist at the General Hospital of Alicante, Pedro Gutierrez. "Every week we each see two or three cases in the hospital of children with back pain or problems that we refer to rehabilitation," warned Gutierrez. And, he explains, "any weight we carry on our back forces us to throw the head and torso forward. The more weight and more time that we are carrying that weight further

Physiotherapist Sara San Cristóbal says that scoliosis is so frequent that the clinic is already setting up a specific unit to treat it in children. “They frequently come to physiotherapy because of the weight of the backpacks, but of course there are other influences, like the way that they carry their packs, ”says San Cristóbal. “They must not be too heavy,” she says in recommending that the weight that children carry does not exceed between 10 and 15% of their body weight. In addition, they must be correctly fitted and carried. If it is a conventional backpack, she explains, it is important to adjust it properly to fit the back ensuring that the straps are wide and padded. Do not carry them across one shoulder. A case with wheels might be less harmful, but they must not always be pulled with the same hand otherwise they can produce asymmetries in the back and problems in the wrist, especially if they are being dragged up and down stairs and pavements.” The president of the FAPA Enric Valor considers the weight that children carry as “brutal.” “In the digital age, I cannot understand why they have to transport such a quantity of material every day. Nor do I know why Primary children need so many books,” he says. The Right Way to Wear a Backpack for a Good Fit Always wear both shoulder straps rather than slinging your backpack with one strap on one shoulder. ... Adjust the shoulder straps so the backpack is high on your back and the shoulder straps are comfortable on your shoulders.

Torrevieja effort to contain mosquitoes Las Torretas, Los Balcones and the vicinity of the Acequión neighbourhood are said to be the areas that are currently most affected by swarms of mosquitoes, although huge swarms are also reported in the Park of Nations. Plagues of mosquitoes are also emerging in Alicante City centre - with a further increase expected in the coming weeks. Repeated fumigation within the area is called for - with some Councils already acting in a bid to reduce the mosquitoes presence - in an ever-increasing environmental losing battle. Mosquitoes' adult larvae have increased - following huge water fall and rising temperatures in the area. Torrevieja City Council have taken immediate measures, by spraying larvae and mosquitoes, just weeks after initial action by the Pest Control Department of Works. A spokesperson from the Council for Health and Pest Control says ongoing spraying will be undertaken. Information can be forwarded to the General Registry of the

ollowing the devastating floods in the southern parts of Valencia and Murcia recently, the British Consulate in Alicante wants to ensure that any UK nationals affected are aware of how they can access support. The most important thing is to know that there is help out there. Both the Valencian and Murcian regional governments have announced that financial support is available if your property was affected by the floods. In Valencia, help of up to €4,500 per property was announced on 20 September and people have 15 days from then in which to apply, so it is important to do so as soon as possible. In both Valencia and Murcia you should contact your local town hall to apply for financial assistance, providing details of the state of your property, together with photos and the title deeds of your prop-

erty if possible. Obviously if your house is insured you should contact your insurance company urgently if you haven’t done so already. British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris said: “This has been a terrible few weeks for all those affected by the floods. The Spanish authorities and emergency services, along with the local English-speaking and Spanish charities and associations, have been doing an incredible job in helping and supporting those affected. I want to extend thanks on behalf of the Embassy and Consulate for all they have done and continue to do. “If anyone is struggling to access the support they need then we are here to help. Please contact us by calling us on 965 21 60 22 or by sending us a direct message through facebook.com/britsinspain.”

Six Orihuela schools remain closed While many local municipalities made especial efforts to restore some sense of normality to families by quickly reopening schools following the recent storms there are still six colleges in Orihuela that remain closed and to which students are still unable to return. Five of them are located in the area of El Palmeral, and are the infant and primary schools of ‘Fernando de Loazes’ and ‘Villar Palasí, the Public School of Special Education 'Antonio Sequeros', the infant's school' El Palmeral 'and the School of Art and Design where the facilities and furniture have all been seriously affected. There is also the school 'Our Lady of Monserrate, in the district of Molins, where water also entered the classrooms, reaching more than a meter in height. Municipal employees and college staff are working hard as they attempt to restore normalcy, but in the case of the 'Villar Palasí' there is an aggravating factor because the building’s electrics have been greatly affected and need to be repaired prior to any thoughts of returning the children to the building. Water and mud has also caused a great deal of damage to the furniture and as well as a great deal of other educational material that must be replaced by the Department of Education. Laura Navarro will become the first woman to run the airfield.

"The horses rescued have everything they need and will be continued to be looked after, as long as need be," said Emma.

She joined Aena in 2006 at the Alicante-Elche airport, where she has spent her entire professional career. Navarro also worked in the Maintenance area, where she was responsible for the Maintenance department, between 2011 and 2013.

"Tomas Soler kindly offered his services to help transport horses in the Vega Baja region. And Book A Bale and two other companies donated 170 bales," said Emma.

As the new head of the Management group, Laura has already shown her capabilities across many different areas within the airport operation.

MEP Domènec Ruiz Devesa visits Benejúzar Benejúzar mayor, Miguel López, together with his deputy, Rosa García, accompanied the European MEP when he paid a visit to the town last Saturday. The Alicante politician in Europe visited some of the areas most affected by the floods during which he discussed possible aid and European funds that can be made available to the municipality. Ruiz Devesa was able to see at first hand the damage caused by the floods in the Segura riverbed, La Pilarica, on the southeast slope of the Sierra de Callosa, la Rambla de Rubes and the Las Barracas neighborhood, where he talked to some of the residents who had lost their homes.

During the past 60 years they have shared many interests, golf, fishing, cycling, walking and popular music. Betty spends quite a lot of her relaxation time knitting and stuffing dolls and animals for donations to her chosen charities. Geoff is an avid gardener, not easy in Spain.

Subsequently, the entourage moved to the Town Hall, where the MEP was able to study the General Urban Planning Plan of Benejúzar together with it’s its Emergency Plan, which included many of the flood areas in the municipality. The group also discussed the possibility of opening a industrial centre in the area close to the path of El Secano, located between the CV-91 and the CV-914 in the direction of Almoradí. The site would provide far greater protection from flooding for the companies that are installed there, “as it was seen to be one of the areas that was not been affected by the rains.”

You are always good when you are asleep

It

was W.C Fields who quipped that ‘the only cure for insomnia is loads of sleep’. Leaving all joking aside, not being able to sleep is a terrible affliction and dangerous for your health. Even minimal sleep loss takes a toll on your mood, energy and ability to handle stress. At some time or other, we all cut back on our sleep for various reasons. The time for getting out of bed doesn’t seem as big a deal the night before, as it does in the morning. There is so much fun out there at night and so many interesting things to be doing instead of heading for the leaba. But there is a price to be paid for sleep deficiency. Without enough sleep, your body won’t be able to work, learn, create or communicate at the level close to your true potential. Some bullish commentators will claim that you can train your mind and body to shave an hour’s sleep per night without affecting daytime functioning. This is not so for most of us. Whilst you can get away with less sleep without appearing noticeably sleepy, sacrificing an hour’s sleep every night will impinge on your daytime performance. In a crisis – like when a loved one is dangerously ill or dying, we can summon reserves to keep going for several nights on little shut-eye, but that can only be a temporary situation. The amount of sleep required can vary from person to person. As we age, less will do to keep us going. Those who know and understand these things are pretty definite as to how much sleep the average person requires. A new-born baby sleeps up to eighteen hours. (promises … promises!!) The teenager should be getting near to ten hours and the rest of us, seven to nine hours. Two hours is a big difference there – but I would say nearer to seven is enough. As you can see, the quantity of sleep you get is important, but we must also pay attention to the quality of that same sleep. Going to bed on a full stomach will affect how well you sleep. We must also pay attention to the quality of sleep

Air travel will play havoc with your sleep pattern. Jet-lag is not only in your imagination – as some would tell us. Most people take some time to reset their biological clock. Approximate time cues for adapting are usually around two hours a day at best. Consequently, it can take more than a week to fully adjust after travelling across several time zones. Workers doing shift work can have the same problem when switching to night shift. I heard somebody on the radio state that more than a third of the adult population suffers from insomnia. Too many troubled sleepers – or perhaps that should read ‘wakers’, turn to sleeping pills to help them sleep: Not a good idea at all. Pills should only be taken on doctor’s advice and only for a short time. Sleeping pills are addictive, so that cure can be worse than the disease. Where there is a problem with noise preventing slumber, there are now some very effective ear-muffs on the market; and where light or brightness keeps you awake, it is possible that a comfortable pair of dark eye goggles will do the trick. On the rare occasions when sleep is evading me; rather than continuing to toss and turn, I get up and make a cup of tea. By the time the tea is downed I am ready for a return to the sack and sleep usually arrives quickly at the second time of asking. I don’t really know the best way to put this without paying a price … but can anyone tell me why it is that the snorer will always fall

Turtles released into Mediterranean They were hatched from first eggs-laying in a century in Murcia

By Andrew Atkinson MARINE turtles have been released in the Mediterranean - hatched from the first eggs nest-laying in over a century on a Murcia beach in the wake of the threat of losing them in the Gota Fria storms. The 25 turtles will have a personal 'identification number' placed on their shell, born after the historic spawning of a loggerhead turtle in Calblanque, in July. The El Valle Wildlife Recovery Centre have looked after the quelonios, in facilities in the mountains of Murcia. It is the first nest of turtles in the Region of Murcia in over a century - the last documented nesting was made in La Manga, in the late 19th century. "This unique event has to serve so that society is convinced of the need to protect the Marine environment," said Veterinarian Alicia Gómez de Ramón. "Also, so that the great natural wealth we have in the Region of Murcia is known," she said. A team of Veterinarians, including María José Gens, and Fernando Escribano, met at Calblanque, along with the general director of the Natural Environment, Fulgencio Perona, releasing adult loggerhead turtles, cured in El Valle. Alicia Gómez said additional turtles' eggs will be taken to the Imida tanks, at the Murcian Institute of Agricultural and Food Research and Development, in San Pedro del Pinatar, to start the captive breeding process at the Centre of Marine Resources. In the summer of 2020 the turtles will be released into the Med sea.

The turtles were hatched from eggs in Murcia

Loggerhead turtles have visited the Mediterranean sea, away from their usual spawning places, including the Atlantic, in Florida and Cape Verde. The turtles' breeding season also included nests found for the first time, in Castellón and Ibiza.

Six Orihuela schools remain closed W

In all other schools of the municipality there are some outstanding actions but the courses have been resumed and are relatively back to normal.

hile many local municipalities made especial efforts to restore some sense of normality to families by quickly reopening schools following the recent storms there are still six colleges in Orihuela that remain closed and to which students are still unable to return.

The situation of the 'Villar Palasí' school is especially bad due to the large amount of educational material that the water and mud have ruined. Teachers at the centre have made an appeal through social networks to request as much help as possible with the donation of toys or any other teaching material.

Councillor Vicent Marzá, the Valencian Minister for Education, visited one of the centres and said that the furniture will arrive in Orihuela this week. But first it will be necessary to have everything clean which will not be easy to achieve, because in some schools the humidity has left a smell of sewage that will remain for many days.

The 'Fernando de Loazes school has suffered significant damage, especially in the kitchen and dining room while in the 'Antonio Sequeros' school for children with special needs, the lifts have stopped working. The Orihuela Councillor for Education, Ramón López, explained that "everything possible" is being done to restore normality in the classrooms "which will be completed as soon as possible", but he apologises and insists that, in one of these schools, "there are serious problems which cannot be solved in a few days”.

Educational games, toy vehicles, animals and other dolls, balls, ... and in terms of teaching materials, notebooks, pencils, coloured pencils, markers, brushes, rubbers, pencil sharpeners, glue, plasticine, etc. are all requested. Donations can be made at the school itself located at Avenida Doctor García Rogel, nº5 de Orihuela However the teaching staff say they have little confidence in the response from the administrations involved "but thank and welcome any support that the public want to send us", because they say they have more trust "in the solidarity of the people, than in the response from politicians”.

ASOKA VOLUNTEERS, ORIHUELA The recent storm hit our region hard and as everyone tries to get back to normal, animal rescues across the area are not only cleaning up but trying to cope with the increase in animals displaced, lost or abandoned, by the inclement weather. Asoka Orihuela is one such rescue. They have the responsibility for all abandoned animals in the civic borough of Orihuela City and Costa and they stress they only accept strays from this area. When the storm arrived they were already bursting at the seams and had in their care over 300 dogs, cats and various farm animals. With the rain, came the mud and the exercise areas and warehouses have had to be cleaned several times to get them back to a useable condition. “Now more than ever we need volunteers” said Nick Moore who has volunteered with the rescue for several years. “We had a lot of help immediately after the tragedy and this was amazing but now the work continues. We still have cleaning to do and animals to care for.” Many of the dogs don’t have patios to go out in, so dog walkers are needed to allow these dogs to get some respite from being in a cage all day as they wait for adoption. Email Nick if you can help

The centre is open every morning of the year and they are located in the village of San Bartolome east of Orihuela so if you fancy getting some exercise and helping abandoned dogs get out of their cages please do send Nick an email. They already have some volunteers in various areas if transport is a problem. If you were feeling generous donations can also be made via PayPal using that address. Miller and Cyril Harrison gave the Hyenas a chance of shared spoils with 2-1 and 2-0 victories respectively. The crucial 12th leg looked a certainty after Williams gained the first on D14, but the steady Brindley levelled then planted his second dart in D8 in the third for the leg, match and points.

“Player Spotlight " This weeks spotlight shines on Derek McGauley, originally from Dublin, but any trace of an Emerald lsle tone has long disappeared, replaced by a southern England alternative honed in the leafy suburbs of Epsom and Brighton. The former landlord of the “Star" in Haywards Heath was, in his earlier years, an accomplished rugby star for the famous London lrish fifteen as a " tight head prop " plus numerous outings for lesser known Eastern Suburbs side when residing for a while in Sydney Australia.

El Capitan arrived complete with new signings – Shane Denness and Ginge Lewis – making the reigning champions an even more formidable prospect. So it came as a bit of a surprise when the home side raced to a 3 – 1 lead – good play from both sides with good heavy scoring made for an entertaining contest. One highlight was Lee Maidens 98 finish T20, 10, D14 – everyone stopped for a moment – does it add up? Brain cells whirring – yes it does!

All captains should have in their possession an ‘info pack’ which contains all relevant league details. We have made the pack the most informative to date, the contents covering all aspects of participation. The season now under way, will El Capitan, retain their title and who will be promoted / relegated? Any ideas? A new feature this term will be an ‘ad hoc’ player spotlight, the first, from the Hub Derek McGauley. Forward your spotlight suggestions to Simone. Las Rosas Bullies 7-5 Hub Hyenas Los Rosas Bullies lived up to their name when hosting last season’s runners up Hub Hyenas at the comfortable San Miguel venue. Some indifferent darts from the former champs were punished from the onset. Terry Brindley closed the first leg on D10 after a clever 128 set up from Dave Knighton. A D1 from Simon Williams made it all square ably supported by Del McGauley 100 and Joe Miller 140. A lone ton from the swearing Bulgarian Alex Nikolov and a last dart D12 from Paul Durrant made it 1-2 after the triples. The bully boys exploited the Hub's shortcomings to take all 3 pairs in a game changing effort. Brindley 100, finishing both legs for the first. Scores of 100,100 and 140 to include some incessant dialogue were not enough to prevent Adrian Buitekant D1 D10, securing the second. Mario Garcia made it a pairs clean sweep on D1, D10 despite 2 tons from Miller. At 4-2 down the Hub required 5 singles to get a result, Nikolov obliged with a 2-0 opening match, only for the hosts to ensure a

The next 8 legs went 7 -1 to El Capitan with the very consistent Vycka leading the way with 140 and three tons. The singles were well contested but all went the way of the champions until up stepped Paul Miller to play Arold Klimonis – with form that surprised everyone and him the most - he completed a 2 leg to nil victory including a 180, 140 and a couple of tons. Not to be outdone new man El Cap's Ginge Lewis produced similar scoring in the last leg also hitting 180 & 140 in a comprehensive demolition of home captain Phil de Lacy. On this form El Capitan will be difficult to knock off their perch. Trinity Pirates 8-4 Tipsy Toad Tiaras The Tiaras agreed an early kick-off with the Pirates in the hope of getting through all the matches in a timely manner. With two regulars missing, reserves Tracey Simpson and Elaine Willis were drafted in and gave good account of themselves as did all the regular ladiesformerly known as the Junction Jaguars. The Pirates also had a few sailors missing but the stalwart buccaneers ensured they got their first win. Notable play from Sid Cross with 3 tons and 3 multi-dart finishes and some great scoring and finishing from Paul Chick and Ray Hayes. A rather sexy leg from Jeff Ward in his singles against Pat Schofield just snatched the victory from her grasp. The Ladies managed the highest score of the night with a 140 from de Lacy in the triples and some consistent scoring from Wendy Hayward and Elizabeth Cowan, the Tiaras amassing 8 ton plus scores in total. We rushed to a finish by midnight and the ladies raced for their carriages with not a single crystal slipper left behind.

AJ on the ropes? ANTHONY Joshua said he was disillusioned with boxing, ahead of a return fight against Andy Ruiz jnr in December, after losing his WBA, WBO and IBF world heavyweight titles in June. AJ was stopped inside round seven at New York's Madison Square Garden. "I think the rematch will be the same - as I think he’s found his maker," Paul Butlin, who fought AJ in 2013, his second professional bout, told me. AJ will face Ruiz jnr in a rematch on December 7, in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. Joshua, 29, who suffered his first defeat against Ruiz jnr, said he has lost a bit of passion and been left feeling jaded. "AJ might have underestimated Ruiz jnr the first time - but mentally he will be in a better place - and knows what to expect," said Paul, speaking exclusively to the Leader. AJ's comments come after failing to secure fights with either of the world's two other leading heavyweights, Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury. Promoter Eddie Hearn says AJ should stop feeling sorry for himself: "I think he was disillusioned - because he wanted to fight Deontay Wilder," said Hearn. “He couldn't get that fight and, as he said, he didn't really want to fight Andy Ruiz," said Hearn.

Joshua and Butlin in 2013. Butlin's heart going with a Ruiz jnr stoppage

Joshua faced criticism, following his defeat in New York, having self-confessed he lacked motivation going into the first fight with Ruiz jnr. Joshua also labelled former unified World heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis as a “clown” following criticism. “Anthony Joshua wants to knock Ruiz clean out. He didn't have that feeling last time - Josh wants to take his head off," said Hearn. However Paul, son of Los Montesinos, Alicante based parents Barry and Elaine Butlin, said: "Ruiz jnr will want to carry on with his reign. "I could see him stopping Joshua again - probably faster this time round. Either way, it’s going to be a good fight. "I’m on the fence - but my heart is going with a Ruiz jnr stoppage."

Winner Richard Wood gets a thumbs up in.....let me explain....after landing the fish after about a 15minute fight whilst Dave was in the process of transferring from landing net to keep net he slipped, landing net overturned and fish finished up squashing his keep net but before Dave could re-adjust himself with his landing net the fish had gone.....this definitely lost Dave 1st place overal. But as they say “THATS FISHING”. The October competition will be on Saturday 19th, drawing for pegs will be 9.00 fishing 10.00 to1.00 half hour for lunch then fishing 1.30 till 4.30. Please note that this is a change of date.

Levante make cricket history

Despite two unfortunate withdrawals, eleven members and two guests competed for the September Medal on the last Tuesday of the month.

Third Place, Handicap 10.0, Paddy O'Brien – 59 points

Saturday 21th September This months competition had to be delayed for a week due to the horrendous storms that sweeped the whole of the Costa Blanca, the devestation it left to some of the low lying areas will take months if not years to recover from with people losing everything.....homes, cars, livestock and even family members. Twelve anglers competed in this months competition with the bigger weights being landed on the higher numbers, you can never tell with this venue which bank is going to produce the best results it changes so much as the wind can change direction anytime. The results for September: Richard Woods Peg 14 11.26kgs Jackie Breslin Peg13 10.38kgs Richard King Peg 6 7.42kgs Willy Peg 12 6.90kgs. The winners in our pairs competition were Richard King and Dave Sutton with a combined weight of 13.32 kgs closely folowed by Russell and Willy with 12.16kgs. Pablo, one of the local anglers, has caught a carp weighing 20lbs photo on display at club, NOW its quite possible that this fish was caught by Dave Sutton during the competition but we never got the chance to weigh it

winners cheque for the 1929 Open to his 16 yr. old caddie. Hagen won so often and in such style that he single-handedly ushered in the entry of the playing pro to the socially exclusive world of golf. As Arnold Palmer once said at a dinner honouring Hagen: “If not for you Walter, this dinner tonight would be downstairs in the pro shop, not in the ballroom.”

The Billionaires favourite Carribean course of Bakers Bay was said to have been completely destroyed by Hurricane Dorian

SAD TO HEAR Brian Barnes passed away. A colourful character, who puffed on his pipe and swigged the odd can of beer as he played, he is chiefly remembered for having beaten "Jack Nicklaus" Jack Nicklaus twice in one day during the 1975 Ryder Cup, winning 4&2 in the morning and 2&1 in the afternoon session.

QUOTED AS the ‘Billionaire’s favourite Caribbean course,’ the ultra exclusive Bakers Bay, favourite of Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler, is not looking quite so pristine at the moment, after hurricane Dorian visited the Bahamas.

Justin Rose, who lives on neighbouring island Albany, and Sean Connery, who lives on New Providence, barricaded themselves into their homes and reported slight damage. Sir Sean was said to be shaken not stirred.

The luxury resort was only damaged, not destroyed, but there is no-one to carry out repairs, and the shanty towns that housed the local workers were completely flattened. “We still have a few workers, they are sleeping on the floor in the hotel, their homes are gone,” said Harvey Moss, the ‘Guest Experience Manager.’

WALTER HAGEN liked to live like a millionaire even though golf professionals didn’t earn much. In fact they weren’t even allowed in the clubhouse. At the 1920 Open, Hagen used his hired chauffer-driven Daimler as his dressing room in the car park at Royal Cinque Ports golf club. A big man in every sense, he gave the entire £100

Barnes also won twice on the Champions’ Tour. When he won the Senior British Open at Portrush in 1995 he holed a 60-foot putt for eagle at the old 17th and his Father-in-Law Max Faulkner, another colourful character who won the Open there in 1951, was there to see it. His friend Sky Sports presenter Ewen Murray says: The prizes on the Champions’ Tour in the mid ’90s were $300,000 and once Brian had made his money he decided: “That’ll do me, I’ll go fly fishing.” THIS YEAR IT’S ALL BEEN about ‘Flash Face.’ In order to improve their drivers and fairway woods Callaway employed a $5 million Super Computer which used AI and machine learning. Head of R & D Alan Hocknell said: “To learn more about the performance of the clubface than humans could, we programmed our computer and

then let it interrogate its own answers, with the sole purpose of creating a clubface that got better and better in terms of ball speed performance. It cycled through 15,000 face iterations, learning from each one, before arriving at Flash Face.” Callaway could have physically built 15,000 versions of the driver to arrive at the final design. The computer took around four weeks, as opposed to about 34 years on a laptop. The result; an average of 3-6mph ball speed gain. Callaway obviously think it’s worth it. Their $499 Epic Flash Sub Zero Driver was voted MyGolfspy 2019 Most Wanted driver of the year. As I’ve said before, the time is coming when we just sit in the clubhouse and watch our clubs play each other. Who’s round is it? “THE ZOZO CHALLENGE”: Japan Skins" will see four top golfers from the four continents: Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Hideki Matsuyama in an exhibition event which kicks off Japan’s inaugural PGA Tour Championship at the Narashino Country Club, near Tokyo, on October 21st. Each hole is assigned an increasing value and players need to win a hole outright to take a ‘skin.’ A spokesman called it “ The first in a thrilling series of annual Challenge events that’ are going to thrill audiences around the globe.” Try to keep awake. Until next time: Happy Golfing. Contact Mick for your regripping and repairs. 638 859 475.

Marabu Golf Society at Altorreal 26th Sept in assn with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services

Perhaps the greatest golfer ever, during his professional career, Jack competed in 164 Majors, more than any other player, winning a record 18 while also claiming 73 US PGA tour wins.

For this month’s meeting a group of 33 players visited the established course at Altorreal taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

As an amateur, he played in the Walker Cup and was runner-up in the 1960 US Open, two shots behind Arnold Palmer.

The weather was beautiful and the course in superb condition despite the recent heavy rain.

But Jack’s golfing career will be defined by his 18 Major triumphs:

The winning Scores were as follows:

* Six US Masters: 1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975, 1986.

Gold Division

* Five US PGA Championships: 1963, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1980.

1st – Kim Dixon – 42 pts, 2nd – Alan Templeman – 36 pts

* Four US Opens: 1962, 1967, 1972, 1980.

Silver Division

* Three British Opens: 1966, 1970, 1978.

1st – Colin McDonald – 29 pts, 2nd Bill Fantom – 27 pts

His first British Open win came at Muirfield in 1966 and last two at St. Andrew’s, where in 1970, he beat Doug Sanders in a play-off and in 1978 became the first player to win all three Majors on three separate occasions. Jack, the ‘Golden Bear’, ended his ‘pro’ career at St. Andrew’s in 2005, and he received a ten-minute ovation from the crowd after hitting his final tee-shot 200 yards down the fairway towards the 18th green which saw him sink a 15-foot birdie. Born in Colombus, Ohio on 21 January 1940, Jack played American football, tennis, basketball and baseball at school and was only ten when he got the ‘golfing bug’. Indeed, while still at school, he carded a 51 for the first nine holes at his father’s course, the Scioto Country Club. Club professional, Jack Groat, was so impressed with ‘young’ Jack that he became his life-long coach. His 17th game of golf, saw Jack win the 1962 US Open at Oakmount, collecting $17,500 (€15.600/£14,500). The 2019 Open winner won

Bronze Division $2.2m (€1.96m/£1.88m). Jack won practically every honour in the game, including the Ryder Cup, and when he retired, he joined the Senior PGA Tour, going on to win ten competitions, including eight Majors. Today, Jack heads one of the world’s largest golf course design companies; he’s also a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and organizes the PGA Memorial Tournament. The author of several ‘golf-orientated’ books, his autobiography, ‘Golf My Way’ is one of best instructional golf publications of all time. Jack also owns the Nicklaus Golf Computer Games franchise and his charity work is legendary. Indeed, he received the USA ‘Congressional Gold medal’ in 2014 in recognition of his service to the nation in promoting excellence and good sportsmanship. Happy birthday Jack, champion golfer, the best the sport has ever seen.

1st – Paul Fairbairn – 30 pts, 2nd – Rod Allen – 29 pts Nearest the Pins – Griffin, Dixon, Fanning and Freeman Football Card – Alan Templeman After the game we returned to Broadway Uptown Quesada, which is located at Pueblo Brava, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their continued support. Our next fixture is the interim game at Altorreal on 10th October 2019 followed by the society day at Vistabella on 24th October 2019. Report by Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services on 966 704 752 or 661 345 931 or see us at our web-site at www.costa-blanca-greenfees.com.

Thader struggle as slow start continues Elitei Project CF...........3 Thader CD.................1

For the 3rd consecutive week, Thader´s leaky defence conceded 3 goals, bringing questions as to the chosen formation. They went behind inside Nou Pepico Stadium on 24 minutes, Benja converting a cross by Castillo. Rafa Gomez levelled the scores by half time, his super individual effort got it´s just

rewards. On 50 minutes, a Ruben centre was met by Adrian Gisbert who put his side ahead once more. Although Thader created good chances, a penalty by Castillo on 89 minutes sealed their fate. There were 2 bookings apiece in what turned out to be a

scrappy match. This victory for Eltei Project (ex Elda Industrial) was their first of the season, and Thader´s 3rd defeat. Next week, Sunday 6 October ko 1130, Thader at home to Benidorm.

Todo challenge for Dundee FC prodigy Jordan By Andrew Atkinson Exclusive FORMER Dundee FC youth player Jordan Martin has kick started his career at Todo Deportivo, Los Montesinos Valencia 2nd Regional club. "Leaving Dundee FC is the biggest regret I've got," said former Dark Blues prodigy Jordan, 20, who resides in Vistabella Golf, Alicante. "Joining Todo is a new challenge in my career. Hopefully the club will challenge for promotion this season," said Jordan.

Lester Piggott tutors Gary race- riding in Newmarket.

www.theleader.info

"After my second year I started to lose commitment - due to a lot of travelling - and decided to leave. "The biggest influence at Dundee FC was Leigh Griffiths, who has gone on to play for Scotland and Celtic. First team players included Rab Douglas and Craig Foresyth, under manager Gordon Chisholm." After leaving Dundee FC, Jordan was selected by the Town and Regional Dundee City teams.

Reflecting back, Angus, Arbroath born Jordan said: "After trials for Dundee FC I signed a ‘mini’ pro contract.

Former Arbroath Lads club captain, he joined Portcullis AFC, aged 16, and was nominated Players' Player, and Manager's Player of the Year in his first season - the youngest player at the club to receive the accolade.

"My career kicked on at Dens Park, gaining a lot of experience in the two years I spent there.

"Unfortunately I suffered a bad double leg break and was absent from football for a year," said Jordan.

"Having joined Dundee FC it was the first time in my career I had been properly challenged.

Jordan suffered another double leg break on his comeback - on the same leg - that lead to another year out.

Jordan leaving Dundee FC 'biggest regret'. "During my spell out of football I moved to Spain, had a trial, and signed for Todo," said Jordan. "Joining Todo, under new coach Lenny Lenihan, along with talented players, I want to challenge myself and hopefully help gain success in the league," said Jordan.

El Raso Golf Society On Friday 27 September the Society travelled to Las Ramblas for the monthly Stableford competiton. It was the first time for the majority of us, to have played this interesting and demanding course. We were pleasantly surprised with the excellent condition of the course considering the aftermath of the recent gota fria. A challenging day which was reflected in the scores. The final results were as follows: Winners of N.T.Ps were Russ Todd (5) Arty Crammon (11) Barry Wilson (14). Russ Todd won best front nine with 14 pts and best back nine went to Debbie Weedon 15 pts. In third place Jeff Lynch 26 pts second was Pete Cleaver also with 26 c/b and the winner of the day with 27 pts Arty Crammon. After the game we travelled back to the Olde 9th in Quesada for

presentations and refreshments. Once again, our thanks to Grant and the staff for our welcoming array of sandwiches and snacks.
