PUNTA PRIMA TRAGEDY - THE DEADLY¡ SELFIE!
Photo: Ambumar Sya
Two young Brits fell to their deaths at Punta Prima last week while allegedly taking a selfie photograph. The pair crossed over the safe-
ty barrier guarding the cliff edge when one is said to have lost his footing, grabbing at the other as he fell. Daniel Vivian Mee, 25, died
instantly while his friend Jayden Dolman, 20, died on Thursday morning having been airlifted to Alicante General Hospital.
24-year-old Lewis Higgins, was physically unharmed but was taken to Torrevieja Hospital

All three men are thought to have been on holiday from Bridgwater, Somerset. Eyewitnesses reported that the young men were walking along the promenade, that links Punta Prima with Cabo Roig, taking photos and selfies along the way. Thy stopped to get a "cover" photo with spectacular views of the sea when two of them climbed over the safety railing, an imprudence that cost them their lives. Police are working on the theory one of the men lost his balance and tried to cling on to his pal’s arm in an instinctive life-saving reaction - but instead of recovering his footing unintentionally ended up pulling his friend with him as both then fell from a height of about 7 meters with fatal consequences.
respond to resuscitation procedures. An eyewitness from Northern Ireland, who lives in the area, said she saw the third man on the promenade in a "terrible, state.” She said he was "in hysterics," begging her to help him, and to tell him his two friends were OK. Investigators have since interviewed him and other witnesses as part of their investigation into the accident. A spokesman for the British Consulate in Alicante said: “We are supporting the families of two British men following their deaths in Alicante, and are in contact with the Spanish authorities, and we are also providing assistance to a third British man who was involved in the accident.” As people take bigger and bigger risks for the perfect selfie, the smartphone snaps have become five times more deadly than shark attacks.
The incident occurred at 7.30 pm on Wednesday evening.
According to the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care, between October 2011 and November 2017, at least 259 people died taking selfies around the globe, compared to just 50 people killed by sharks in the same period.
Local police, Civil Guard and units of the Urgent Medical Assistance Service (SAMU) attended the scene, with the paramedics only able to certify the death of Daniel Vivian Mee after he failed to
It says that while women take the most selfies, young men, who are more prone to take risks, make up three quarters of the selfie deaths - in drownings, crashes, falls or shooting accidents.

Flood of Manteros overwhelms Cabo Roig Strip As well as a front page article in Diario Informacion on Wednesday, in which the newspaper was scathing in it’s criticism of the Orihuela Council, the Orihuela Chamber of Commerce has also issued a press release criticising the Municipal Corporation and its lack of action against the “manteros” that are trading illegally on the coast. The Chamber says that it shares the demands of the Orihuela Costa business community in requesting that the City Council and the authorities of the Provincial Council, the Generalitat Valenciana and the Government Subdivision, take appropriate measures to curb such illegal sales in the Oriolan coast and do more to protect the entrepreneurs who contribute to the area’s wealth, against those who occupy irregular spaces in Aguamarina and Cabo Roig. The president of the Chamber, Mario Martinez, said that "we are united by a close relationship with the businessmen of our coast, with whom we maintain a permanent contact". Martinez added that
Monday 8th - Sunday 14th July, 2019 such work is essential "to generate employment and wealth in our municipality, as well as to attract tourists. In addition, the coastal businessmen comply with the law in fiscal matters, they pay their taxes and social security and they also comply with the regulations and the municipal ordinances, while the ‘looky looky men’ do not.” Meanwhile the article in Diario Informacion says that there are in excess of 60 ‘Top Blanket’ sellers who set themselves up on the Aguamarina promenade every evening, preventing pedestrians from passing in front of shops and bars. They state that the Association in the area reports that the sale of drugs has also increased and that, as the Policia Local are completely ineffective in dealing with the matter it must now be put into the hands of the Guardia Civil. The Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa (FAOC) demands that the police must attend the Orihuela Costa more often and seize the illegal products. "The administration is always saying that there are no resources but if there were a continuous patrol every evening, between 7 pm and midnight, the 'top blanket' sales would be eradicated," says its president, Tomás Moreno. "They do a lot of damage to the merchants, not only the small ones, but also to the shopping centre in La Zenia because if someone buys a counterfeit bag in Cabo Roig they will not spend their money in Zenia Boulevard,” he says. The manteros now occupy the entire right bank, next to the service road of the N-332 between Cabo Roig and Campoamor. "It gives the appearance of a third-world aspect, it damages trade, tourism and, above all, the image of Orihuela Costa," says Moreno, who says that "it is now beginning to assume an uncontrollable and unsustainable look."
On the day that Diario Informacion visited the strip that say that they counted over 60 illegal traders
The Cabo Roig businessmen also denounce an added problem, the increase in drug trafficking in the area by some of the manteros. According to a spokesman from the Association of Cabo Roig businessmen, "They can regularly be seen carrying out transactions in sight of everyone. The authori-
ties and the police turn a blind eye to the problem, they do not ask for licenses or identification. They do nothing but chat and pass the time of day with the manteros. They certainly don’t confiscate their illegal stocks and they are often seen leaving the groups of manteros with a handshake or even a ‘high five’." Certainly not the actions of a police force that wants to uphold the law by clamping down on illegal immigration and trade!

Ministry of Health passes Bascuñana file to prosecutor A blow for Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, just 7 weeks into his new term of office, as the Ministry of Health has now passed file evidence to the Provincial Prosecutor's Office of Alicante who will investigate whether he should be formally charged for taking more than 50,000 gross euros a year from the Department of Health, without carrying out any work as an advisor, from 2007 to 2013.

Hospital emergency rooms overloaded
Bascuñana, a family doctor, has always denied that he charged without working, arguing that he carried out counselling tasks and that he even went to a Vega Baja health centre to cover other doctors' leave. But now, this murky affair has finally ended up in the Office of the Prosecutor, since the Ministry itself cannot adopt any type of administrative sanction of its former employee because more than six years since any crime was committed, although up to three commissioned reports conclude and agree that he did charge the public administration without carrying out any work.
Emilio Bascuñana, right, the mayor of Orihuela, welcoming Ximo Puig to the city during a recent visit.
Alicante Council leader, Ana Barceló, has previously said that "this man did not work in any health centre but was receiving his salary from the Department of Health, so now it will be up to other agencies to look as the case and decide whether the facts constitute the embezzlement of public funds.”
Civil Guard investigates violent death in Torremendo village The Civil Guard is investigating the violent death of a 77 year old Belgian who was found dead in his home in the Orihuela hamlet of Torremendo. The body was found by a neighbour on Thursday in the garage of the house located on la carretera de las Canteras.
Civil attended the scene with the latter assuming jurisdiction, collecting samples and gathering evidence. A spokesman said that the man’s high-end Mercedes vehicle is missing so the main hypothesis is that the murder was committed during the vehicle’s theft.
The neighbour was alerted by the garage door which had been open for several days. He decided to look inside, where he found the dead man lying on the floor, the body showing multiple signs of violence.
The victim had been living in the centre of Torremendo for some time where residents, most of them expatriates, elderly, and in search of sun and a peaceful existence, are absolutely shocked by the recent events.
Both the Policia Local and the Guardia

"He didn’t mix with his neighbours very much but he did use the local doctor,” said one of the neighbours, who added that the man had been living in the house for more than a year. In one Torremendo bar over the weekend, there was little talk of anything else. "We knew him by sight, because he used the bar occasionally, he was sociable, he spoke to everyone, but he didn’t mix with the rest of Torremendo's residents," said a client. Another added that "he lived with several parrots and he was known around the area because he played in a number of different venues in the area where foreign people go to dance". One British neighbour, who lives close to the victim's house said that "we did not see or hear anything at all and we did not know him very well because he had not been living here for so long" adding that "he was kind to the neighbours and I hope they find the murderer soon.”
The UGT hospital workers union has warned that the effects of the current heatwave are causing problems in hospitals across the province, singling out the General Hospital of Alicante where many patients are being treated from corridors. Already an additional 30 single rooms have been reopened and the Pharmacy Service in Elche warns of shortages of chronic medication due to high temperatures It is mainly the older people that are suffering especially those who might be suffering from any previous pathology, such as respiratory or circulatory diseases. At one time on Thursday the hospital had as many as 23 patients lying in corridors, an increase of 7 from the previous day and on Friday the situation forced managers to reopen almost thirty of the hundred beds that, like last summer, are closed during the summer months as a result of staff holidays. However the Department of Health is playing down the problems saying "It is true that on Thursday 416 patients attended the General Hospital of Alicante, but it is not exceptional and indeed not much higher than many other days." However, staff contacted by the Spanish press, and who prefer to remain anonymous, say that winter flu peaks at about 350 daily patients while on Thursday the Alicante General exceeded 400. The relatives of the elderly man who spent Wednesday night lying on an old beds in a corridor with oxygen do not share the management’s dismissal of any overcrowding. The Emergency rooms in Elche have also been overrun although the Vinalopó Hospital said that they consider the situation about normal "for these dates"

Pharmacies warn of drug shortages Pharmacies in the Valencian region are warning that approximately 600 commonly used drugs are no longer available through their outlets, an increase of more than 100 in the last three months. As doctors tell of increased bureaucracy and more disorders they say that patients are returning to them time after time in the hope that their original medication has become available once more. There are now about 600 medicines that are no longer available in pharmacies, a hundred more than just three months ago because the manufacturers remain in a price war with the health authorities. Among the popular medicines affected is one that treats high blood pressure, Tevetens plus for which pharmacists warn that they will now have to find a replacement with a similar active ingredient because it is no longer provided by laboratories. However, given that a large number of the population will have to deal with increased blood as

Helen’s Trucks move into Larger Premises
Other drugs no longer available are required to treat hepatitis C, rhinitis, bacterial infections, heart diseases and chest angina. A spokesmen from the Valencian Society of Family and Community Medicine, Aurelio Duque, says that the situation is unacceptable, and it is now beginning to seriously damage the integrated national health system whereby, using their SIP, patients should be able to receive their medicines anywhere in Spain. “And it is not only a problem of shortages”, according to Duque. “Good and reliable old products are lost while new ones are often less effective, and in some cases more expensive. Nothing has been released that is any better than what we already had." The president of the College of Pharmacists of Alicante, Fe Ballesteros, says that there is not always a generic substitute for the missing product, and that there are still misgivings among some patients when the term "generic" is suggested.

Driving each other mad … OK, Class, heads up: This week we shall deal with the intricacies of navigating a motor-propelled vehicle on the road. We will take a look at the different types of drivers you are likely to encounter. Your Irish driver may prove the most difficult to understand. Starting with the art of driving itself, it has to be said that there is very little pleasure in driving nowadays, in comparison to the leisurely ‘spins’ of a couple of generations back. Now it seems as if you have to compete for every inch of space on the road and when you get to where you are going, trying to find a place to park will stress you out more than did the driving. On the road, you will encounter a lot of different types of drivers. It is important that you know what you are dealing with, so let us break it down along racist and sexist lines! (With apologies to the politically correct brigade!) Please remember this is not a scientific study … it is much more accurate! Your typical Spanish driver, both senor and senorita, will never give way to you or slow down to allow you into a stream of traffic. He will only use his indicator as an aggressive tool before cutting in where it is barely safe to do so. If you leave the required space between you and the car in front, he believes it to be his space and he will overtake. Back to a study of our Irish driver. The female of the species is generally more careful and cautious. She is law-abiding and will do you no harm. However, she will not ever smile and give you right of way – lest you might get the impression that she is ‘easy.’ Like we said, the Irish male driver is a peculiar animal and difficult for other nationalities to figure. He sees a car, a 100 metres up the road with a driver wanting to pull out onto the road. Eamonn will slow down to a crawl, give a friendly flicker of his headlights and flamboyantly invite the driver to come in front of him. This invitee could be in a spot of bother if he or she does not acknowledge Eamonn’s generosity of spirit with a radiant smile and exaggerated wave of the hand. Conversely, if the driver up ahead

comes out without the Irishman’s ‘permission’ he/she can expect to be ‘blown off the road!’ An English driver is considerate and courteous to any traffic he can see. But both sexes give scant regard to the car behind. Dave and Dianne have been known to cruise in the overtaking lane and will slow down if they feel the car behind is tail-gating. They will go to any lengths – including creating a traffic-jam, to ensure they can park in the shade in the supermarket car park. The Welshman is ponderous and can get in your way for two reasons. Firstly, he is either singing a happy song or contemplating the fact that he would prefer to be someplace else. The second reason you need to watch Gareth is that there is usually someone sitting in the passenger seat who knows more than he does. Whatever about any of the above; you certainly don’t want to meet a Scotsman on the road. Let the story of Aengus be a warning to you. Mr Smith left London in his shiny new Merc – heading north to spend the weekend in the Scottish Highlands. After crossing the border he always preferred to navigate the quite country roads, and it was on one of these roads – at a bend in the road, to be precise, that Mr Smith encountered Aengus. Aengus was counting sheep on the mountain as he sauntered along in his twenty years old jalopy. Aengus may – or may not have been out a bit too far on the road when he crashed into the Mercedes. The driver, Mr Smith, remained calm and controlled after the incident … stiff upper lip and all. Aengus welcomed the tourist to his country; pointing out how great it is that the English now come in friendship. He produced a bottle of scotch from the back of his car and offered Mr Smith a drink. Mr Smith was too much of a gentleman to say no – and anyway, he was suffering from shock. Aengus kept offering the Englishman another
The expenditure, which will cover salaries for all councillors and their advisers, also includes an allocation for two extra advisers which the opposition party have said that they are also questioning. A breakdown of the council salary scale shows that the mayor, José María Pérez, will earn 3,700 euros (gross) per month, while his three senior councillors will each receive 3,200 euros gross per month, and the remainder 2,571 euros per month. Meanwhile the opposition councillors will receive an allowance of € 500 / month, although the PSOE does not specify how this will be distributed, nor how many councillors will receive it. Neither do they make clear whether this is included in the total of 425,000 euros. What they do say, however, it that the PP government has now established two categories of councillors: "business class" and "tourist class".

drink until half the bottle was gone. ‘Such wonderful hospitality’, crooned Mt Smith, a warm glow spreading all over his body. ‘Now it is your turn to have a swallow, Aengus; join me in a toast to the good relations between our two great nations’. ‘Ach, not yet’, replied the Scotsman; I’d better wait until after the police have left!’ I prefer the train myself … Don’t Forget The fellow who blows his horn the loudest is usually in the biggest fog. FIRING SQUAD John Francis De Veras's parents escaped from Spain - and Franco's firing squad - at the end of the Spanish civil war in 1939. "After the Spanish civil war had finished my father discovered he was on the list of the 'firing squad'," said John. "My parents managed to get to Gibraltar - and on to England," said London born John, 79, who resides in La Siesta, Alicante. The Madrid city government has documented almost 3,000 people executed in the early days of the Franco dictatorship, whose names are engraved on a memorial. The comprehensive study lists 2,934 people condemned to death by the Franco regime - between 1939 and 1944 - as it tried to entrench

its power following the Spanish Civil War. The Spanish civil war started on July 17, 1936, ending on April 1, 1939. Franco died in November 1975. A memorial is at the cemetery of La Almudena, where almost all were executed by firing squad following military show trials. The list includes local Mayors, officials, political leaders and activists, as well as the Thirteen Roses, a group of young women belonging to the Communist Party or the Unified Socialist Youth, executed against the cemetery wall on the morning of August 5, 1939. Cases had already been documented by historians - but the new list identified hundreds of previously unknown, or unnamed, victims. Mauricio Valiente, third deputy of the Madrid mayor, said their memorial would be a show of this recognition, of reparation, and a right to the truth that not only all the victims have, but all the people of Madrid. Fernando Hernández Holgado, a historian from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid who worked on the study, lamented that the victims of Franco’s repression in the city had been 'forgotten' for such a long time. "Almost 80 years have passed since these executions took place in Madrid, almost 80 years, and 40 years of those have been
democracy,” he said. In 2007, the government of Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero passed the Historical Memory Law, which included a state effort to exhume and identify the estimated 115,000 missing victims of the Civil War and dictatorship, believed to be buried in around 2,500 mass graves across Spain. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy defunded the programme in 2012. Mr Valiente said of the forgotten victims: “It is a debt that had to be paid, the right to the truth and to reparation." "After my parents fled Spain, which was an almighty task, they settled in Shepherd's Bush, in London," said John. "I grew up in Shepherd's Bush and my mother and father spoke Spanish to me. I was bilingual," said John. *In Part 2 of a Costa Blanca and Costa Calida Leader exclusive, reporter Andrew Atkinson talks to John Francis De Veras about his life working in London for ITV. John, who formerly lived in Estepona, having sailed to Estepona Harbour, also tells the heartbreaking story of his Russian wife Reka, who died of a heart attack, brought on by Alzheimer's.

British Driver released following Torrevieja cyclists death A 66 year old Russian cyclist was killed on Tuesday in a traffic accident at kilometre 57 of the N-332 variant in Torrevieja, close to the Parque de las Naciones. The accident occurred at around 15.45 in the afternoon and the scene was attended by medical services and Traffic officers from theCivil Guard.
ty, with a daily average flow of approximately 40,000 cars, and where overtaking has been prohibited since 2014, and although it is unusual to see cyclists on this stretch of road it is not prohibited. The fatal accident took place a few meters from the end of a traffic black spot where a number of serious accidents have occurred in the last ten years and where vehicles cannot exceed 70 kilometres per hour. Tuesdays fatality can be added to a long list of recent accidents involving cyclists that has occurred in the province of Alicante. On March 8 a cyclist died in San Fulgencio when he collided with a vehicle on a county road in the municipality. During the past year, 38 cyclists have died on Spanish roads in traffic accidents - four hundred in the last decade - according to statistics from the Traffic Department.
The cyclist was traveling in the direction of Alicante when he was hit by a vehicle, driven by a 33 year old Briton, the impact throwing him several metres from the road. The medical services say that, such were the extent of his injuries, that they could not do anything to save his life. The driver of the car is understood to have fled Cyclists are not normally seen on this stretch of the N332 but they are perthe scene but he reported shortly fectly within their rights to use it. afterwards to the Local Police in Rojales. In a court appearance on Thursday the judge rejected the prosecution request demanding that he be detained, saying that the detainee is a resident in Spain and there is no risk of him fleeing the country. He was subsequently released while the investigation continues. Charges include homicide due to serious negligence and a crime of leaving the scene of the accident. A bad couple of weeks for vulnerable road users The last 2 or 3 weeks have seen a number of incidents involving some of the most vulnerable road users in the Alicante province, with quite a few incidents, two of which proved fatal. An 80-year-old woman was hospitalised in a serious condition on Thursday after her cycle was in collision with a truck on the N-332 in Benidorm. A paramedic ambulance attended and medics carried out advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation manoeuvres in order to stabilise the victim before transferring her to the University of Alicante General Hospital with multiple injuries. On Saturday morning a motorcyclist was killed after a crash on Avenida de Villajoyosa in Alicante. A paramedic ambulance attended that incident but there was nothing the crew could do to save his life. Meanwhile, also on Saturday morning, a 42-year-old man was injured in a collision between a car and a bicycle on the road between San Bartolome and Callosa de Segura. Paramedics attending this incident managed to stabilise the man before transferring him to the Hospital Vega Baja with multiple injuries. Most recently the sad story of the 66 year old Russian cyclist who was killed close to the Parque de las Naciones in Torrevieja. Motorists are clearly still not paying enough attention to cyclists using the road with a recent survey saying that over 40% of motorists dont know how to act in their presence. Council formally breaks Orihuela Costa Sports Centre Contract
Monday 8th - Sunday 14th July, 2019 Orihuela council has now formally rescinded the contract with the UTE Management Company for the Playa Flamenca Municipal Sports Centre (CDM) in the Orihuela Costa. They did it last Friday in an extraordinary Local Government Board. In addition to withdrawing the contract with UTE, the Ayuntamiento is going to initiate a sanctioning process in which they will claim damages of 782,000 euros, in addition to keeping the 50,000 euros bond placed by the company at the start of the contract period. They claim that UTE has breached an agreement to build a multipurpose building of 1,000 square metres which would include a fitness and cardio-fitness, a gym, warehouse and changing rooms. UTE closed the sports facility without any notice on 1 April leaving many dozens of users without the services of an indoor heated pool, paddle tennis courts, football field, basketball and handball courts, gymnastics or tennis, causing a situation that created a great deal of outrage among the residents of Orihuela The gates to the facility still remain locked

Costa. During the intervening period there have been several demonstrations demanding the centre reopening. The City Council says that it will now enter the facilities to check the condition, repair damage and carry out maintenance as well as installing surveillance to avoid further vandalism. It will then put the centre management out once more to tender although there are calls locally for it to be managed publically. Cambiemos spokesman Carlos BernabĂŠ recalled that the sports centre had the highest prices in the area and together with CLARO it defended a joint motion demanding the cancellation of the contract and its immediate reopening "with affordable prices". BernabĂŠ said he feared that the intention of the local government would be to "reprivatise" the CDM "predictably so that Clequali, the company that manages the sports facilities throughout the rest of the municipality, will have the opportunity to take the centre on.

Clarke’s Bar plays host to the On Course Foundation
On 1st of July 12 members of the On Course Foundation arrived for a week of Golf and Entertainment hosted by the proprietors of Playa Flamenca’s Clarke’s Bar, Tommy and Mary, along with the members of the Golf Society. The OCF’s aim is to reignite the futures of wounded Service Personnel and Veterans through golf, many of whom it is actually able to place in employment. Our first pleasure was to have a meet and greet held at the Bar where, we were very fortunate to have four members of the Chelsea Pensioners in attendance. Wayne, Skippy, Dennis and Joe had arrived in Spain a week earlier to celebrate Armed Forces Day with The Royal British Legion. It was a time for both organisations to get the chance to swop stories and experiences. The Charity Golf Day was held at Vistabella on Thursday and we had a fantastic turnout of 72 players. The competition was a team game and the
winners were: Kenny Forest, Andy Haddon, Dan Tranmer OCF and Ian Boswell OCF My thanks on the day go to Vistabella Golf, Albatross Golf, Devere Spain and Mick “The Grip” Reeves for their kind donations. The presentation night was held at the Bar where, we held Raffles and Auctions and were brilliantly entertained by “Just Ollie”. Saturday Night saw the group once more in the Bar for our “Stars in their Eyes” Show. We had 9 great acts and the one that drew the most votes was Justine singing Eva Cassidy. In second place was Ian Boswell as Neil Diamond and third was our own “Quizzy Mando” as Vanilla Ice. A great audience saw a wonderful show compered by the ever young Johhny Zeller. The OCF’s time here continues until Wednesday and the final total of the money raised will not be known until then, however, last years total of 3200 euros has already been passed, so a big thank you
Organisers Bish, Charlie and partners with Course Marshall Benjamin goes to everyone who has supported this great cause. My special thanks go to Mary and Tommy Clarke and all of their team, Quizzy Mando, Roy and Tony Welburn and not least of all, Marie McBride, for all their hard work.
We are already planning next years trip which will coincide with the RBL Armed Forces Day at Orihuela Cathedral toward the end of June.

SMGS at La Manga.
– he who does everything - beat Daz Hancock 8 holes to 6.
This week saw 40 (41) members and 4 (6) guests make the annual pilgrimage to la Manga. There was a sense of anticipation before play started as this course is a favourite of many people. So it was a little disappointing to find the greens were still recovering from their recent hollow-tining and were woolly and slow. There was no excuse for the state of the bunkers, however – they were hard packed, sand less and in many cases very wet. All very strange on a premium golf course. Mind you it’s hard to think of a local course which has good bunkers.
Nearest the pin prizes – sponsored by Mick Roscoe and the Property Shop – went to Matt Taylor, Paul lambert, Phil de Lacy and Norman Cahill. Special mention to Paul Lambert – I measured 207 yards to the pin on my scope on hole 5, the pin was behind a bunker and he hit to about 3 feet – great shot.
The course was playing long and the wind gradually got up during the day to keep the scoring in check. Only two players managed 36 points and some of the other scores don’t bear mentioning. You will be pleased to hear that Alan Mac has recovered remarkably well from his tumble – so well in fact that he was back to his normal scoring (twenty something) after last week’s superb 38 points. We were 3 players light at the start of play after Colin Smith and his two guests went MIA – they finished their round, to a great round of applause, just as we finished the prize giving – no prizes for them however. There were two matches in our match-play league 1 this week – Norman Cahill beat Theo Blowhole 7 holes to 6 and Robin Eastman
Best guest this week was Andy Forrest who came in with a steady 32 points.
Prizes in bronze category this week went to – 4th Sandra Dibble 31, 3rd Mike Kaylor 32, 2nd Ron ‘still Shaky’ Stenhouse, again, with 34 and a very fine 36 from the winner Ralph Tilbrrok. Silver was very close – 4th Norman Cahill 30, 3rd Phil de Lacy 32 losing on countback to Kev Allbright who also remarkably had 32, first was that smash and grab merchant Dave Blackburn 33 who always seems to do well whenever he is here. The lower handicappers in gold produced some very similar scoring 4th Matt Taylor 32, 3rd John Humphries 33, 2nd Greame Forbes 35 and 1st was Dave Alderdice with the best score in the division and
overall – on countback from Ralph. The abacus prize for the last of the runners-up went to John Rose score only on application – kindly sponsored by Mike Kaylor of Mike’s IPTV. SMGS entered two teams in the support Prostate Cancer event at Visabella last Saturday. We donated €455 raised by the members through the “blob tin”. To find out more visit our website smgs.org or give our Captain Tony Smale a call on 639 129 223. Next week we are at Alicante golf and the following weeks at El Plantio and Vistabella.

Quesada Bowls Club by Dee Stephenson We are fast approaching the end of the South Alicante summer league with just one more match to play next week. This week Quesada Blenheims put up a very strong fight in their match against the current league leaders San Miguel Moors. Unfortunately, although the shots were very close San Miguel 88 to Blenheims 80 shots - the Blenheims only won on one rink so the points were 10-2 in favour of San Miguel Moors. This means the points difference between the Blenheims in 3rd place in the league and San Luis Wellingtons in second place has been extended with the Blenheims 11 points behind with just one match left to play next week. In contrast Quesada Lancasters played a very feisty match against San Miguel Christians winning on 3 of the rinks. Unfortunately San Miguel won the shots 97-90 so the overall result was a
draw - 6-6. Meanwhile in the South Alicante Summer knock out competition Quesada's hopes are pinned on Peter Morgan who has made it through to the third round of the Mens Singles, which will be played by 21st July. Good luck Peter! Quesada Bowls is a friendly club with a mixture of competition, league and casual players. We welcome both new and experienced bowlers. Forest and Dundee stalemate in Pinatar’s 1000th game Over 1500 spectators watched Nottingham Forest and Dundee share the spoils in a goalless draw at Pinatar Arena on Tuesday. In the 1000th fixture to be played at the venue both sides showed a great physical ability although the final touches were missing in this pre-season display. It turned out to be a low-key contest between The Reds and their Scottish Championship opponents but it was a useful evening for the new Forest head coach Sabri Lamouchi as he was able to give minutes to the vast majority of his first-team players. Lolley looked the most threatening of the Forest attack and he almost gave The Reds the lead minutes into the second half but he hammered a strike

Monday saw us compete in ‘The Counter Game’. The twist here was that we didn’t know how many of the four scores were to count until reaching the next hole. The ever consistent (but fictional) Albert helped Paul Brown, Joyce McClusky and Benedicte Kruse into 2nd place whilst myself, Bryan Neal, Olga Douglas and Mike Mahony took the glory with 102 points (just 4 points short of our all-time record). Terry Field was not present today as we’d sent him off on a scouting mission looking for new members. Look who he found!!! (John Daly the 1995 British Open winner). Wednesday’s winner of our Stableford was Joyce McClusky with 38 points followed by Paul Brown with 36. The story of the day has to belong to Reg Akehurst, who on the eve of his 90th birthday, took 5th place with 34 points. Is this some sort of record? If anyone knows otherwise please contact us via our website: lasramblasgolfsociety.com
There were two ‘2’s today coming from Richard Connock and Alan Douglas. Friday and it was a 6x6x6. With a terrific 89 points 1st place went to Olga Douglas, Pete Dunn, Mike Chapman and Mike Mahony. Just one point behind them and taking silver were Ken
and Liz Robertson, John Shervell and Harry Howard. Por ultimo, golfer says to caddy, ‘Do you think I can get there with a 5 iron?’ Caddy replies, ‘Eventually sir.’ Pues hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

Ole - Craig's Spain pain - as £25,000 sale Archibald moves to Barca for £1m
Glasgow born Craig, in charge of the national team during 1993-2001, was manager at Clyde when he sold Archibald for a paltry sum. "I sold Steve Archibald from Clyde to Aberdeen in 1978 - for only £25,000 - and he went on to join Barcelona for £1m," said Craig, a non executive director at Scottish Premier League club Aberdeen. Star striker Archibald joined Spanish giants Barca, in a move from Spurs in 1984, making 55 appearances, scoring 24 goals, winning the Spanish League in 1985. Archibald was shipped out on loan to Blackburn Rovers during the 1987-88 season, before leaving Barca in a move to Hibernian in 1988, returning to Spain, when joining Espanyol in 1989. Craig, CBE, Scotland's longest serving national manager, who was also in charge of Preston North End, Motherwell and Aberdeen, said: "Steve Archibald went for £25,000 - moved on for £1m and there was no sell-on clause in those days!".
CRAIG Brown reflected on his managerial career as he notched up another year on celebrating his 79th birthday on July 1, pinpointing the day he sold Steve Archibald for £25,000 - only to make a £1 million move to Barcelona. "Spain are a superb footballing nation, a team Scotland have played at full international, u21 and youth level," former Scotland manager Craig told me in an exclusive interview.
Craig was in charge of the Scotland under 16s team that reached the 1989 World Cup Final against Saudi Arabia, played in front of 88,000 spectators at Hampden Park. Scotland beat Portugal, managed by Carlos Queiroz, in charge at Real Madrid during 2003-04, whose team included Portugal legend Rui Costa and former Barcelona star Luis Figo, in the World Cup u16s semi final. "I remain good friends with Carlos," said Craig.

Enjoyment Under the new system, golfers should feel like they can simply play and enjoy their round – just the same as always. Submission of Scores Player should submit their score as soon as practicable after completing the round to allow for calculation of handicap adjustments ready for their next game. Minimal Number of Scores to Obtain a Handicap To encourage new players to the game it is recommended that the minimum number of holes be submitted to obtain a handicap is 54 in any combination of 9-hole or 18-hole rounds. Course Rating and Slope Rating Course Rating indicates the difficulty of a golf course for a 0-handicap golfer. Slope Rating is relative to the Course Rating, providing strokes needed to play at the same level as the 0-handicap golfer for a specific set of tees. Course and Slope Ratings enable golfers’ handicaps to be portable from course to course, country to country. Basis of Handicap Calculation Averaging the best eight of a player’s most recent 20 scores provides a good indicator of potential ability and prevents from a temporary loss of form to unduly impact on a players handicap. Abnormal Course and Weather Conditions Adjustment Golf isn’t always played in ideal conditions and the new system will allow for adjustments to me made where there is clear evidence the weather elements impacted on a players score and performance Accommodating Local Golfing Cultures It is not the intention of the new system to try to force a change on the way that golf is played around the world or to try and remove the variations therefore the new system attempts to accommodate golf cultural differences and level of competitiveness across the world.

Jesus replaces Ruben at CD Montesinos By Andrew Atkinson Leader Exclusive
It looked odds on at one time that Benidorm CD would voluntarily drop into Regional 1, but luckily for them a massive cash injection has saved the day. They have been taken over by a group of Costa Blanca businesses, and the owners of USA based Philadelphia Fury, who play in NISA (National Association of Independent Soccer). New Redovan boss Rico, has gone back to his old club Thader Rojales, to make 6 new signings. May, Javito, Miki, Paul, Hector and Camarasa, have all decided to follow Rico for pastures new, leaving Thader with a massive task in finding suitable replacements for them.

CD Montesinos have announced a new manager in Jesus Santander - formerly of Torrevieja - in a bid to return to the Valencia 1st Regional G8 after suffering relegation last season. Jesus has replaced Ruben at the Los Montesinos based club, after a topsy turvy time, having replaced Carlos Perez in November - a bold move by the club. Ruben, a former player at CD Montesinos, was thrown in at the deep end as Perez’s successor, on the back of poor results in the club's second season in the 1st Regional. A meeting by the management and committee at the Vega Baja outfit took place at the end of the 2018-19 season - that ultimately led to the departure of Ruben. Former Torrevieja player Perez, who was in his third season at the club, got the bullet after unrest amongst the fans - and a run of defeats -that put the writing on the wall, as CD Montesinos ebbed towards the relegation zone. Ex-player Ruben, who had been in charge of CD Montesinos youth team, was seen as the coach to step up to a senior role at the club. Ruben, born in Los Montesinos, was given the chief coaching position following a management committee meeting on November 21. Perez was axed - just two seasons after CD Montesinos gained

promotion to 1st Regional. Ruben took charge of his first game as CD Montesinos boss against Santa Pola CF last November, the first of 20 games in charge. Injuries and a run of defeats led to CD Montesinos's relegation, learning their fate after the final game of the 2018-19 season against Callosa Deportivo B in May. A spokesman from the club said a full statement on Jesus Santander's appointment will be made soon.
