Corvera airport - A very expensive caprice and a historical fudge?
Despite spending an absolute fortune on the new Murcia International Airport, during the building and opening of which the Murcia Government seemed to lurch from one crisis to another, Corvera
finally opened its doors, just seven years late and at a cost of 265 million euro in mid January. The Murcian government spent far too much on the airport construction in order to replace a perfectly good facility that was not
costing them a penny. The new facility is a great deal further from the coast, and guess what….flights and airport traffic, compared to San Javier, have already fallen by 10%, and doubts are now growing about whether the investment was worth it.
You might remember that on Monday, 14 January at 8:40 pm, a Ryanair Boeing 737 took off for Manchester airport. It was the very last civil flight from San Javier, about 45 kilometres from the city of Murcia. Continued on Page 2

On the ground, in a very modest farewell ceremony, the president of AENA, Maurici Lucena, the General Director of the company, Javier Marín , the government delegate, Diego Conesa and the Air Force Commander watched the aircraft take off in silence. There was no pomp or ceremony. Neither was there a single representative from the Murcia regional government to witness what was the last non-military operation, after half a century of service to the civilian population, during which time the airport has earned billions for the local economy. The following day was very different. On Tuesday, 15 January at 11am, an Army Falcon landed at the Murcia International Airport, located in the town of Corvera, about 22 kilometres from Murcia, but much further from the coast than San Javier. On that occasion there was plenty of ceremonial splendour with the president of the community, Fernando López Miras, and a large part of his government, waiting at the foot of the aircraft pan together with many other dignitaries, including the Minister of Public Works, José Luis Ábalos. As the aircraft steps were lowered, down climbed King Felipe VI, and so the ‘boot licking’ began. The airport was officially open! But now, after four months of doing business, and comparing the activity to that of San Javier, both flights and passengers have fallen dramatically and doubts are growing about whether the investment was worth it. With more than seven years of delay on the originally planned scheduled, a multimillion-dollar litigation with the initial constructor and management company (Sacyr), and a construction cost of more than 265 million euros, the new International airport started operations at the beginning of the year.
signs are beginning to tell. The reasons may be quite simple in that, for some of the coastal destinations, such as Manga del Mar Menor or nearby towns such as Torrevieja (already in Alicante), it may be much more attractive to travel to the AlicanteElche Airport where El Altet is a much larger and better connected airport, owned by AENA and at which the state company invested over 600 million euros last year, to raise its capacity over 20 million passengers, more than four times the capacity of it’s Murcian neighbour. Initial figures indicate that the Corvera site is much less attractive for both traffic and airlines than was its predecessor. In the first four months of operation, Murcia airport processed 232,231 passengers, 17.7% less than the numbers moved by San Javier in the same period of 2018. To be fair, it must be said that the comparison is not entirely exact, because the opening of the new facility didn’t take place until 15 January, but if the first month of the year is excluded, the analysis between February and April shows that traffic decreased by 10.5%, according to statistics published by AENA on its website. The decrease was parallel to that of the flights operated, 18.7% lower in the first quarter. In a highly competitive air market, no company operating under free regime can afford to fly airplanes with empty seats, and Alicante is proving to be a destination that is more in demand by those airlines. Accumulating 3.9 million passengers between January and April, 8.5% more than in the same period last year, it is now beginning to consolidate itself as the major tourist hub of the Spanish southeast coast. But the Murcian authorities continue to insist that their airport can fill a gap in the market despite its proximity to Alicante, and that there is sufficient demand by the public.
Murcia President Lopez Miras said that he was very satisfied. The airport had accomplished something that few other airports in neighbouring communities had not been able to do, bring in the International management company AENA to take over its operation.
The most optimistic estimates talk of four million tourists coming to the region thanks to the infrastructure, which is now connected with the United Kingdom, Ireland, Belgium, Austria, Poland and Norway, with airline companies such as Ryanair, EasyJet and Tuifly.
The airport at Castellón, another multi million euro fiasco, had been trying for years and even now, seven years after it first opened it continues to be without an operator after the termination of its contract with the French company Edeis.
But with Ryanair announcing recently the withdrawal of their winter schedule between Corvera, Luton and the East Midlands, the outlook for the new airport is not as rosy as Murcia’s politicians would have you believe.
Anybody who works in in real estate will tell you that there are three key words that must be considered when planning a property purchase or marking a territory, if you want to have any guarantee of success. They are location, location and location, each of which badly lets down the site at Corvera, and already the
But of course time will tell whether the 265 million invested by the Murcian Government will have been worth it or whether it has been a very expensive caprice and a historical fudge. Would it have been smarter and cheaper to continue trusting San Javier, which did not cost a single euro? For now, the figures point unquestionably to the second.

JOSÉ AIX MAKES BID FOR TOP JOB
Orihuela politics was turned on its head on Friday when Ciudadanos leader, José Aix, said that he is open to negotiations with the PSOE and Cambiemos, over the formation of the new Municipal Council Until the announcement, standing mayor Emilio Bascuñana, was confidently predicting that, despite all the vitriol between the two parties in recent weeks, he would once again be leading the new government in coalition with the C’s. But now José Aix, who, with his 5 council seats, is calling all the shots, says that he is quite prepared to enter into negotiations toward forming a possible 3 party government with PSOE and Cambiemos, which will finally oust the PP leader, Emilio Bascuñana, as mayor. However, the one major disagreement that stands in the way, is the appointment of José Aix as mayor. The man who made the first move, Carlos Bernabé, leader of the tripartite formed by Cambiemos, Claro and Unidas Podemos, wants to appoint Carolina Grace, PSOE, as leader of the coalition, which is something that does not fit in with the plans of C’s that, according to sources, will only enter into any negotiations if the Mayor's Office is promised to José Aix. The PSOE’s Gracia, in her response on Saturday morning, said that the appointment of mayor is ‘not negotiable’ although she is quite happy to enter into talks with both formations to try to reach an agreement. Gracia said that "we want to open a dialogue with serenity and seri-

ousness, based on trust, respect, vision and generosity." But despite the apparent impasse there is still a possibility that some kind of agreement could be reached, maybe similar to the one that took place in Albatera, that saw a mid-term change of mayor between the PSOE and Cs. We have an interesting week ahead! The objective of the discussions, according to Bernabé, is absolutely clear, that Orihuela "does not suffer a mayor who is still involved in a scandal regarding his previous employment, who is arrogant beyond belief, and who leads a party in which the internal divisions are still clear for all to see, so much so that on electoral night there was a clear split between the followers of the current mayor and the party number 3 and PP President, Dámaso Aparicio and his followers, with the two groups choosing to follow the results in different locations. Aparicio was in the PP headquarters in the Plaza Nueva, while Bascuñana and his followers were 250 metres, in his office on la avenida de España. Between the three potential coalition parties they would provide 14 councillors, one above the necessary majority, with 5 from the Cs, the 6 of PSOE and the 3 of Cambiemos-Claro: UP. But as Bernabé submitted in his approach, how likely would it be that the three parties could unite in committing to the values, solidarity and institutions of the municipality for the good of the whole community. When we start to talk about good governance, especially over a period of four years, it is important to ask how they will be able to create an ideology embraced equally by all three parties in which they will be able to pursue the best interest of our society and economy with commitment and in solidarity. This would be easier said than done, especially in such a diversely organised coalition as the one that is being muted.

Flights diverted to Valencia after aircraft crash at Alicante Alicante-Elche airport was closed to air traffic for over 4 hours on Thursday as work was carried out to remove a private jet that, on landing, had skewed across the runway following a problem with the landing gear because of a blowout on a wheel. Take offs and landings were initially suspended at about 2pm causing the cancellation of nine departing flights and the diversion of 28 aircraft to Barcelona, Valencia, Ibiza and Murcia airports, as well as delays to more than 30 additional flights. The two crew, who had flowing in from Amsterdam, and planning to pick up passengers in El Altet, were unharmed. The airport was returned to normal just before 6pm. Accident investigators are suggesting that the accident was caused by a problem with the landing gear because of a blowout on a wheel. The pilot of the private plane was able to control the jet across the runway, although it could only be steered to an
area, traversing the airstrip that forced the airport to close . The security protocol was activated immediately and the incident was attended by firemen, Civil Guard, other emergency services and airport personnel. The closure of the airport surprised many passengers who were already on board and had to be disembarked, as well as many others who were waiting for arrivals in the airport terminal. The private jet had to be removed with the help of a crane, with it’s transference to a safe area that did not affect the landings and take-offs of aircraft taking several hours. The task was eventually completed at 17.40 hours and the airport reopened shortly afterwards. During the almost four hours of air traffic closure, 28 airplanes had to be diverted to València, Barcelona, Ibiza and Murcia. In addition to the 28 diversions, nine flights were cancelled and 33 had their departure from El Altet delayed.

STILL USING YOUR UK FINANCIAL ADVISER? Many people who have retired to Spain and have investments still use their old UK-based financial adviser. This could be for a variety of reasons, from feeling comfortable with the person they have been dealing with for many years, to not knowing any local Spanish-based financial advisers. One of the main problems of continuing with your old adviser is they may not be authorised to give advice here in Spain. They almost certainly will not have the in-depth knowledge of the tax-efficient products available to Spanish tax residents.
Apart from the understanding of the Spanish system, having a local adviser means you can pop in to their office for a chat and be kept up to date with all the various changes that take place. This is especially relevant at the moment with the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. If you are thinking about finding a new Spanish-based financial adviser, then give us a call and see what we can do for you to ensure you live life the way you want. EXPATS ARRESTED IN AIRPORT DRUGS FIND Officers from the Guardia Civil working at Alicante-Elche Airport have arrested two people on the suspicion of offences against public health, after intercepting a massive amount of drugs. The officers became aware of a shipment in January which was sent from Ireland to Torrevieja, via the airport. This shipment contained 5,640 zopiclone tablets; a medicine used lately to hypnotise and commit sexual crimes, as the drug causes psychrotrophic, hypnotic sedative effects, and is known to override the will of the consumer. The packages was intercepted at a control point at the airport, and so failed to reach its destination, but alerted the officers to people of interest.
The body is of a woman, believed to be homeless Shortly afterwards a body appeared floating face down. It was a little further south, in the area of rocky coastline, close to the promenade of Punta Margallo and the Avenida de la Purisima.
This is the first case recorded in 2019 school as normal. They confirm that the actions taken were only as a precautionary measure. Indeed it is understood that the school has adopted the advice and business has now returned to normal. The local health centre and other health centres in Elche have all been notified to report any similar incidents to the Department. Along with the chemoprophylaxis, the heads of the Ministry of Health gave a talk to parents and teachers explaining the protocols to be followed should there be any further concerns.

The case was detected last Saturday, while the boy was traveling with his family and he was quickly admitted to a hospital. It is understood that he has now been moved from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is progressing favorably. The Department of Education have pointed out that it is not a typical disease, and in the case of Elche and its surroundings this is the first case that is recorded in 2019. Last year the health department only registered one similar case. According to Medline Plus, meningitis is inflammation of the thin tissue that surrounds the brain and spinal cord, called the meninx. There are several types of meningitis. The most common is viral meningitis, which occurs when a virus enters your body through your nose or mouth and travels to the brain. Bacterial meningitis is rare, but it can be deadly. It usually starts with bacteria that causes flu-like infections. It can cause a stroke, deafness and brain injuries. It can also damage other organs. Pneumococcal infections and meningococcal infections can cause bacterial meningitis.
Although officers from the Civil Guard and the Local Police carried out resuscitation manoeuvres for more than fifteen minutes, the woman was confirmed dead upon the arrival of medics and an ambulance. Sources report that the woman, believed to be homeless, had been living rough in one of the small abandoned buildings that are on the coastline where she died. NEW TRANSPORT SERVICE TO PROVIDE 37 ELECTRIC BUSES The contract for the new Torrevieja urban transport service is now agreed, although the public is unlikely to see its introduction for another 18 months, according to the acting mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón (Los Verdes), and the councillor for Transport, Javier Manzanares (PSOE). The main improvement that the contract includes, a proposal from the mayor himself, is that the 37 new buses included in the contract are all electric, albeit they will be rather more expensive. Dolón said that the move would be a major improvement, particularly when comparing the principle of sustainability against pollution by fossil fuels. The planned annual fee amounts to 4,291,511 euros. Javier Manzanares recalled that "when we entered the government in 2015 we found a service without a contract and with many deficiencies, so we immediately went to work. Now we have a transport system that will be the envy of many.”
Anyone can get meningitis, but it is more common in people with weak immune systems. Meningitis can get worse very quickly. You should seek medical attention immediately if you develop: a sudden fever, severe headache, stiff neck, nausea, or vomiting. HOMELESS WOMAN DROWNS IN CALA DEL PALANGRE DE TORREVIEJA A woman drowned on Tuesday in the vicinity of Cala del Palangre, between Los Locos beach and Punta Margallo. According to the local press a witness alerted 112 emergency services, about 7.30 pm that he had seen the woman get into the water and swim to the prohibited section of the beach area that is clearly market with buoys. He said that at that point he lost sight of her.
The planned annual fee amounts to 4,291,511 euros.

Vacancy for title of world’s greatest lover ‘Events, my dear boy … events’; so to quote Harold MacMillan, ‘Events’ have blown our column totally off course this week. I was geared to pen a soft environmental article on pollination, the birds and the bees and so on: And then this happened! However, my editor may yet see fit to file this one under ‘birds and bees’! My late uncle always maintained that if you managed a reputation for being an early riser, you could stay in bed all day. The downside for a man having a reputation for great deeds is that when his cover is blown it is much worse for him than for an ordinary man. Go on … don’t you all get pleasure from seeing the mighty fall? You know you do! This is not a racist newspaper and this is not a racist column, but if it just so happens that the imposter is a man of different nationality than our own - well, you have to give the facts as they are! As the logo of the now defunct “Irish Press” said; “The truth in the News.” The degree of pleasure to be extracted from hearing the following news is entirely up to yourself. Frenchmen claim to be the world’s greatest lovers and they carry that aura around with them. You know what I mean … the shirt collar turned up … the swagger … the Eric Cantona strut There is the story of the Frenchman explaining to the Englishman that there are 79 different ways to make love. ‘Cor blimey’, replied Dave, ‘I thought there was only one way.’ ‘And what is zat’, enquired Pierre. Dave told him. (I am no good at sketching!). ‘Sacre bleu’ exclaimed the Frenchman, ‘80’! There is one thing I don’t like about Mr Debouzy’s plan. He is only going to dish out the Viagra to men between the ages of 18 and 40. Have you ever heard the likes of that? Surely this decree is ageist and therefore illegal? Strikes me that the French are in even greater trouble than we thought if that age group needs to be jump-started? God Almighty, it was the opposite problem with us ‘back in the day.’ ‘Take a cold shower and concentrate on hurling’, was the advice we got from the parish priest. Apparently the mayor of Montereau is more than a tad desperate with his last resort proposal. Anyone moving into his town will automatically qualify for a fistful of Viagra. On 16th May, the mayor of the French town of Montereau, south of Paris, issued a decree promising to hand out free Viagra in an effort to halt the fall in the dwindling population of his town. Mayor

First observed in 2006, Armed Forces Day in the United Kingdom is an annual event to commemorate the service of men and women in the British Armed Forces. Here in Spain we hope that the 2019 event will celebrated by representatives from all security forces and veterans, including the Irish Services and the Guardia Civil, National and Local
Police, in order to raise awareness and appreciation of the sacrifices that have been, and are still being made, all over the world, especially by those who are currently on active duty. As well as Una Cleminson there will be 4 Chelsea Pensioners, led by former RMP (SIB) WO1, Wayne Campbell, who are all flying over especially from the Royal Hospital. The event itself will take the form of a short parade, led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, which will start at the Tourist Information Office at 5.15, followed by a service in the Cathedral conducted by District Chaplain Pastor Keith Brown and the Dean. The parade will be the first opportunity for us to see Jack Kemp, the new District Parade Marshall in action as he puts the Branch Standard Bearers through their paces. Music will be provided by The Royal British
Legion Concert Band in Spain, led by David Last, with choral accompaniment from the Crescendo International Choir. This year we hope to have former BBC Symphony Orchestra and BBC Philharmonic Orchestra member, Sam Arthur, who is also a member of the RBL Band, playing the Cathedral organ. Local Entertainer Stevie Spit and Professional Opera Singer Valerie Lynch will also be singing during the service. Local dignitaries attending the event will include local mayors and councillors as well as the Military AttachĂŠ from Madrid and representatives
of the British Consul. On conclusion of the service a reception will be held in the Cathedral cloisters where nibbles can be enjoyed accompanied by music from the Singers of La PasiĂłn de Orihuela. For anyone attending from the Torrevieja or Orihuela Costa areas the local council are providing 3 free buses to and from the Cathedral, more information on which can be had from Eddie Coleman by email at: eddiecoleman44@hotmail.com The event and reception is open to ANYONE wishing to attend.

Twenty Years On Paddy´s Point Today During the month of June Paddy´s Point has a history spanning 20 years, and it has certainly come a long way in that time. The first Irish pub in the area, Paddy´s Point has evolved into a vast pub-restaurant with a great deal to offer residents and holidaymakers alike, and this can very much be attributed to its owners, Hazel and Rory. Hazel Connor, a native of Co. Offaly, has been at the pub since the very first day, in 1999. A year later, Roscommon native Rory Lee joined. He worked his way from bar man to bar manager and in 2008, the two went on to lease Paddy´s Point, eventually buying it in 2012. Rory and Hazel have helped shape the pub into what it is today. You´ll be likely to see Hazel serving food on the terrace, or Rory pulling a pint, and it goes without saying that they are handson in the running of the business. Their ethos also applies to the staff made up pf many familiar faces who regular customers can rely on, safe in the knowledge that they´ll be looked after. General Manager, Marie Chapman, has been a part of the team since 2001. Alan Condron joined as bar manager in 2005, and Eibhlin Curtin in 2007. Many customers will testify that the food is part of the experience at Paddy´s Point. Consistency, quality and familiarity are what the kitchen aim to deliver, and they certainly do. People wanting a ”taste of home” will not be disappointed. Danielle Ruttledge and Anne Clarke opened the pub´s first kitchen in 2008, and they still work there today, ensuring the running of the kitchen is seamless. They have seen the kitchen go from strength to strength, and with resounding demand and a growing work force, the kitchen was renovated in 2013, to keep up with the popularity of its extensive menu. The staff would describe themselves as family, and, sure enough, there are family ties within the team. Danielle and Ann´s sons, Steven and Ryan, ensure that the pints are perfect. Alan´s mother, Marian, helps in the kitchen. Karla McGarvey, one of the floor staff, joined from Co. Donegal. That year saw the arrival of more of the
Monday 3rd - Sunday 9th June, 2019 force, including Emma, James and Gavin. We have also seen the arrival of some new faces in recent years, including Jordan, Caoimhe, Olivia, Dane, Clodagh and Paul, who fit right in, and hopefully will still be part of the team for years to come. Needless to say, the permanence of the team is testament to the love of their job. The immaculate image and cleanliness of the premises can be attributed to Lyn, who has made it sparkle and shine for the past 10 years. The atmosphere in Paddy´s Point is palpable, with customers and

staff alike enjoying being on the sunny terrace. For the sports fans, the pub boasts 20 televisions, both inside and out, showing major sports. GAA, soccer – you name it, we show it. The pub is also home to the Celtic F.C Supporters Club - the biggest of its kind in Europe, outside the UK and Ireland. For the Celtic games, home and away, the pub is a sea of green and white, alive with supporters, music, and cheer. The Club has also been on various trips to see Celtic play, including Barcelona and Valencia. At night, the fun atmosphere continues, with table service on the vast terrace, and some fabulous music. The much-loved Eileen Reid sang from 2007 to 2013, to many fans of her music. Proficient on the Costa Blanca music scene, Paul Cullen, has played weekly since August 2003, and is guaranteed to get everybody dancing! Year after year, the customers return, young and old, for the liveliness, and guaranteed solid service. In the summer months, local magician Graeme Mykal entertains both kids and grown-ups alike with magic tricks and balloon modelling. Paddy´s Point has also won awards – in 2018, they were proud winners of the “Irish Pub with the Best Atmosphere” in the first ever “Irish Pub and Grub Crawl” held on the Orihuela Costa. Pipping 30 other Irish bars to the post, it is an achievement which Rory, Hazel and the staff are extremely proud of. This year they won the food award with “Best Tapa in an Irish Pub”. The atmosphere both inside the pub and out, is one which is hard to replicate, and undoubtedly Irish. It has a personality and charm all of its own. From the décor to the Irish welcome from the staff, “Paddy´s Point lane” is a home from home. Rory and Hazel are keen to pass their hard-working values on, not only to their staff, but to their two daughters. Their eldest daughter, Cloe, likes to work during the school holidays, and ten-year-old Isabel has her very own apron! The small community of La Zenia, and indeed the Orihuela Costa, would definitely not be the same without Paddy´s Point. They are often generous sponsors of charitable events, and their bi-monthly golf society is one of the most successful on the coast, and a guaranteed great day out for all. Paddy´s Point has customers from all over the world – England, Sweden and even as far as Australia! It´s a place to relax, socialise, or just get a good bite to eat and enjoy the sun. At Paddy´s Point, there truly is something for everyone.

SIMON'S STORY

CALL ON 634 325 906
In 2003, Simon noticed changes in the way he was feeling. He had been struggling with depression. Worried about what people might be thinking of him, he avoided going out and meeting his friends. His GP diagnosed him with agoraphobia and referred him to a mental health team. But he was still struggling to cope, Simon explains: As a man, it is still difficult to open up about the way you feel. It isn’t 'manly' to share your feelings. The trouble is, for men who are battling depression, this expectation can be damaging. If you carry on bottling things up, overtime they will overwhelm you. "I spent the best part of a decade feeling alone with the way that I was feeling. I think this is part of the reason why I would feel suicidal. These thoughts and feelings lead me to attempt to take my own life on more than one occasion." He says: "I heard of Samaritans and I knew that they were there to listen. But before I called them, I didn’t realise what a positive impact their support would have on my life. "I explained that I was thinking about taking my own life. He wanted me to walk to the branch to meet face to face. The thought of this was so overwhelming - it took me everything just to leave the front door. "The volunteer remained on the phone with me until I was just a short walk from the front door. I was welcomed with a warm smile, before sitting down to talk about what was making me feel so down and depressed. "Knowing that there is someone there, has improved my quality of life. I no longer feel alone, with nobody to understand. The day I chose to get in touch with Samaritans, I took back some control." Simon says that with hindsight, he should have
reached out to Samaritans sooner. He hopes that by sharing his story, fewer men will suffer in silence: "You can call them on any given day, at any time of day or night." Quesada Bowls Club Report by Dee Stephenson For the past 2 weeks, our league bowlers have enjoyed a break while the Linea Directa Spanish Nationals competition was taking place at The Emerald Isle and Greenlands Bowls Clubs. This year the competition was played as a “round robin” up to the semi finals and finals. QBC entrants in the various disciplines did well in the group rounds. But it was Peter Morgan and Terry Morgan who were victorious, winning the Mens Pairs. Peter Morgan also won the Mens Singles title. Fantastic results - well done Peter and Terry. Meantime, resuming the leagues this week in the gorgeous sunshine, in the South Alicante Summer League Spitfire Division, Quesada Lancasters didnt have a good week. On Monday they played San Luis Wellingtons who won the match 10-2 and shots 99-58. Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club How nice it was to get back to the league matches, this Monday morning, particularly at home to the very friendly Badgers from Country Bowls. I know our trip really enjoyed the match and company; the competition really could have gone either way, though the score line may not infer it. The Buckskins had a successful morning taking the rinks by 4 to 1 and the overall shots 98 to 76. Dolly Ford, Pam Harris and Brian Harris 17-25.
Pairs – John Goddard and John Bailey 20 – 14. Another great result, well played Guys. With the result of the close matches we just managed to achieve the overall shots. The final result was 89 shots for to 87 against giving each team 6 points each for a draw. Our position in the VCL table is not so good. We are second from the bottom but only 1 point behind Montemar who we play on Wednesday. Come on Team let’s move up that table. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides all equipment. Roll-up days are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings. Contact Fred Trigwell on 659139129 for more information. Janet Wright, Ron Greenstreet and Keith Longshaw 20-15. Ngaio Baldwin, Pete Baldwin and Malc Sykes 21-14. Ann Taylor, David Wright and Jim Taylor 20-8. Brian Gilham, Marion Haynes and Dave Haynes 20-14. On Wednesday our VCL team were at Greenlands against a strong team. whilst losing in 4 of the disciplines, the rinks had a good win and Diane Yates lost the ladies singles by just the one shot. One very good race Another great turnout of 17 competitors sailing 10 boats for the SAMM races on May 19th. There was a dead calm when everybody arrived but, as forecast, the wind picked up to 4.5 to 5 knots at the start then built quickly to 6 to 8 knots where it remained for the whole 75 minute (4500 seconds) race. Everybody made a good start and the fastest boat in the fleet, Topaz Duo, soon pulled ahead hotly pursued by two groups, the Laser Radial, Laser 1, Omega and Laser 2000 then a few minutes later the two Sailfish 18’s and the two Gamba’s with the diminutive Sea Hopper bringing up the rear. These two groups had some exciting and tight racing amongst themselves, with boats constantly changing position, as the individual crews tried different tacks to gain the advantage, and lapping within seconds of the rest of the group This order continued for a few laps but eventually a couple of mishaps soon had the fleet spread out all around the course. The about to finish signal was sounded at 4230 seconds and the boats finished in

The corrected times gave the honours to the Sailfish ‘Mistral’ (Julian Pering and Steve Rocks) with the other Sailfish ‘Ginetta’ (Ian Sinclair and Peter Beck) second just 3 seconds behind. A brilliant performance by the two largest boats in the fleet. By the time the 5 minute warning signal was sounded for the second race the wind had increased to 12 gusting 15 knots the maximum for safe sailing for SAMM members, most of who are between 60 and 75 years old. Mike ProBert talks golf (in assN with Costa Blanca Green Fee s vcs)
FOR LAUGHS ON THE LINKS and titters on the tee: two of the best in the business: Bing and Bob.
Pebble Beach Pro Am, and Bob founded the Bob Hope Classic at Palm Springs and the British Bob Hope Classic, held at Moor Park.
"It's been a rough few years.” he said, “ this is going to go a long way towards getting me back to where I want to be, in the top 100, competing against the best.”
Bing Crosby died in 1977, aged 74, after a round of golf in Spain. (What a way to go) His youngest son Nathaniel inherited his passion for the game, winning the US Amateur aged nineteen.
McDowell won the US Open at Pebble Beach in 2010, just one of the outstanding performances on the Monterey Bay course, among them Nicklaus knocking the flag out on the 17th in 1972 with a one iron, and Tiger lapping the field in 2000. The course, celebrating it’s centenary this year and hosting the US Open later this month, is a sacred spot for golfing pilgrims, even more than Augusta, probably because Pebble Beach is a public course, although the $495- $525 greens fees mean it’s usually the same old billionaires bumbling round in buggies. Players will be hoping the weather is kinder than it has been lately, nearly every tournament in America so far this year has been rained on.
Bob died in 2003, aged 100. His golf jokes about President Ford who he called ‘the most dangerous driver since Ben Hur’ are legendary: “There are 51 courses in Palm Springs, and Gerald never decides which one he’s going to play until after his first tee shot." STEPHEN GALLAGHER (45) said after his Hero Indian Open victory: “I’m really proud of this, when you’re my age you’re in the sort of twilight, so it’s a big win for me.” Poor old chap.
Harry Crosby and Leslie Hope were born 26 days apart; Crosby on May 3, 1903 in Washington USA, Hope on May 29 in Eltham, S. London. Bob’s family emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio when he was four. Both became good enough golfers to compete in the Amateur Championship, Bing in 1950 at St Andrews, Bob in 1951 at Royal Porthcawl. "Bing was a two-handicapper at best,” Bob would say, “I was mostly a six. Bing took it seriously, I played it for laughs.” The pair helped put the PGA on the map. Bing founded a Pro Am at Rancho Fe in San Diego, in 1937 which eventually became the
If Stephen’s in the twilight at 45 it’s a wonder the Seniors were able to stagger round the course at Oak Hill, N.Y. for the US Senior PGA, especially as it was wet and windy, and Ken Tanigawa, the 51 yr. old winner, probably needed artificial respiration. What’s Phil Mickelson thinking of, entering the US Open this year at 48? Hope his insurance is paid up. ANOTHER OLD-TIMER, Graeme McDowell (39) ended his near four-year title drought with a 3-under 69 in the Puntacana Championship. Even though the Puntacana, in the Dominican Republic, isn’t exactly the Masters, it’s on the PGA Tour, and was an extremely welcome comeback for McDowell, not least because it brings him back full playing privileges on the US circuit. Once 4th in the world, he entered the tournament outside the world’s top 250.
THE IDEA IS SIMPLE- by improving aerodynamics, you swing at the same speed but the club head travels quicker, equalling more yards. Cobra has designed their King F9 Speedback like a plane's wing, inspired by the world's fastest objects with advanced aerodynamics. Golf Monthly says: ‘With a face 3% thinner and 10% lighter to increase efficiency and with Cobra Connect shot tracking, the stunning yellow Speedback with changeable sole weights and adjustable loft offers performance to match premium drivers without their eye-watering price.’ Bob again: “It's wonderful how you can start out with three strangers in the morning, play 18 holes, and by the time the day is over you have three solid enemies." Until next time: Happy Golfing. Contact Mick for regripping and repairs. 638 859 475.

IN SAFE HANDS Goalkeeper star Hector returning home in Los Montesinos football skills course HECTOR Pizana Pascual is returning home this summer - in staging a Football course - arranged in conjunction with Los Montesinos town hall. "I am delighted to be back home," Los Montesinos born goalkeeper Pizana, 24, told me. Pizana, who finished his graduation with Valencia CF, will be educating boys and girls, born between 2003-13, during June 17-21 in Los Montesinos, Alicante. Pizana's career began at Valencia B in 2013-14, moving to Albacete Balompié, in July 2014, being assigned to the reserves in Tercera División. "I will be on hand in training players to improve their skills, including goalkeeper training," said Pizana, 6' 1", who signed a new three-year deal with Albacete in August 2015, making his first team debut, starting in a 1–2 away defeat against UE Llagostera, for the season's Copa del Rey. In September 2015 Pizana made his Segunda División debut - when sent off after committing a penalty in a 1–1 away draw against CD Mirandés.
Ahead of the Hector 2016–17 season, returns to Pizana was promotLos ed to the first team Montesinos in Segunda División in June. B. In August 2017, Pizana was sent out on loan to CD Guijuelo in the third division, for one year, suffering a serious knee injury in October, which kept him out for the remainder of the season. The termination of his contract with Alba was on 27 July 2018. Pizana, who signed for CDA Navalcarnero in the third tier, on July 29, 2018, said: "I will be fronting questions and answers sessions during the week long footballing course in Los Montesinos. "The football course will also take in tactical, physical, and cognitive skills, working through a comprehensive methodology." Participants will receive a campus uniform football kit and Diploma, with juice refreshments for the 20 euros fee. Bookings are being taken at the Los Montesinos town hall.

Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Playing Golf in High Temperatures Heading into June we can well and truly state that summer has arrived in Spain and while we won’t yet see the extreme high temperatures of July and August there are some simple things that all golfers should do to prevent problems in the summer months ,namely: If possible avoid playing golf in the early afternoon between mid day and 3pm. Always apply sun block to exposed areas of skin and try to wear a hat to avoid sunstroke. Remember that thirst is the last sign of de-hydration not the first Drink plenty of fluid particularly water and sports drinks which replace the minerals that your body loses as you sweat. Avoid drinking alcohol which de-hydrates you more quickly. Try to eat something when playing because you will use energy as your body works hard to keep you cool. If you get the chance on the way around take the opportunity to wait in the shade but don’t hold up play when doing this. Although you may feel weary keep up with the group in front and remember the quicker you play the less time you will be exposed to the sun and high temperatures. If you follow these few simple steps you will avoid problems resulting from playing golf in extreme weather conditions in the hot summer months. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Jubilant Mickey Mouse trainer Tom takes horse Charle Brune to bar - celebrating once in a lifetime wins
In another hard fought battle, the semi-finals saw Primadonnas face Friendly Temps and Gap Ladies face The Dolly Mixtures. Primadonnas were all in fine form and stormed to a 5-0 victory (best of 9) and put their feet up whilst they awaited the outcome of the other match to see who they would face in the finals. Gap ladies managed to meet them with a 5-2 victory under their belt with some great darts thrown by their Dolly Mixture opponents. In the finals, played across 3 boards - 3 pairs, 3 singles, 3 singles – first to 5), the Gap Ladies won all 3 pairs games to give them a 3-0 lead. The Primadonnas were having none of that and took two singles in the next round courtesy of Mitch Halliday and Beaty Powell. Bliss Wright managed a 180 but alas didn’t win her game but teammate Cynthia Jevons got hers to take the Gap to a 4-2 lead going into the final 3 singles, played simultaneously. Gap Lady Simone de Lacy was the quickest to the finish of the 3 pairs, beating Karen Millar 2-0 to put the final nail in the coffin to make it a 5:2 victory for the Ladies in Red. Thanks to everyone who came to lend their support, to Primadonnas and Black Dog ladies for the raffle prizes and to our lovely chalker chappies Ern, Stan and Nigel and all the ladies who volunteered too. It was a great night to end this season on and we all send our love to Geoff Lloyd who we hope to see in October.
AFTER three decades in racing without a winner you'd have thought owner-trainer Tom Shanahan would have pulled the reins in! But patience eventually paid off for Irishman Tom - when his six year old horse Charle Brune won TWICE - in the space of two days. "I called into the bar straight after the second race win," said Tom, 53, who couldn't wait to get to his local to celebrate - with Charle Brune in tow. Tom and Charle Brune nipped into the Horse and Hound Bar Lounge at Dhalla, County Tipperary, near Cashel, after winning at Tipperary. "It was a fantastic surprise to see our neighbour and customer for years, Tom Shanahan, winning at the races with his horse Charle Brune," owner of the bar Maggie Ryan told me. "It is lovely to see someone local having such a great win," said Maggie. Ballinure based Tom, saddled Charle Brune to wins at Wexford, gaining a 23 lengths win in a 2 mile handicap; followed by victory at Tipperary, when gaining an 8 lengths win in a 2 mile handicap, ridden both times by jockey Donagh Meyler. "I used to take Charle Brune out on hunts - to sort his head out," Tom, Gunman at the Premier Harriers, told me. "I arranged with Maggie Ryan at the Horse and Hounds that I was calling in on my way back from Tipperary races - for a few beers," said Tom. "I did tell Maggie I was bringing the horse into the bar! We didn't half have a craic - in what will be a once in a lifetime experience," added Tom. Tom piled praise on his son Bill, credited in playing a key role in the success: "Credit has to go to Bill - the huge amount of work he's put in is fantastic", said Tom, who self labelled his yard a 'Mickey
LaMangaTorre CC 20 runs win against Alfas 1st By Andrew Atkinson LaMangaTorre CC travelled to Benidorm to play Alfas 1st in the first division - both teams having a 100% win rate in the 2019 season. Skipper Wood lost the toss and the visitors were put in first with Wood run out after a mis-field without him facing a ball.. C. Rumi was in at no.3 and looked to building a partnership with other opener, J.Kinsella, keeping up a decent run rate with frequent boundaries. Kinsella took the fight to the bowlers but a fielding adjustment saw the opener try to glide the ball, playing down the wrong line and being bowled out for 32 T. Knowles was out for a golden duck, after which G. Neve went in at 6 and with P. Harvey the two batsmen held their ground, seeing the team to drinks at the 15th over (65/4). The run rate continued after drinks until Harvey fell as he swung for a ball high and wide, nicking it through to the keeper and Walker's 4th wicket. Culshaw, back in the team after a 6 month absence, looked like he hadn't missed a day with some heavy hitting - and some lucky balls landing
safe - seeing him and G. Neve steer it through to the 2nd drinks break at the 30th over (133/5). Culshaw came to end came after good work behind the stumps and then Fletcher was in at 8, looking to continue some big hitting from the T20 the week before. Fletcher helped G. Neve reach his first club 50, but was later bowled out in the 35th over after he was clean bowled, bringing in youngster Connor Wood. Wood was at the wicket for one over, when bowled from a good Yorker. H. James was in at 10 to try help G. Neve in boosting the score up. A good slow ball from W. Ashraf saw G. Neve's eyes light up as he smashed the ball high into the air to cow corner - where a good catch was taken. T. Rumi was in at 11 with instructions to survive the last three overs. A few singles were taken, but the innings ended with Rumi being bowled two balls before the end. "The boys finished with a respectable 170 all out off 39.4 overs. below par on this wicket but anything can happen in cricket," Kieran Wood told me.

Mouse' set up. "Charle Brune has always jumped well - from what is a Mickey Mouse set up," said Tom. Charle Brune won his two races at Wexford on May 22, at 10-1, and at Tipperary on May 23, at 9-4 favourite. Tom, who owns Spotless Drain Cleaning, cleaned up with nice punts, having won prizemoney of 14,275 euros with Charle Brune. Charle Brune carried 11st 10lb in the Tipperary race, racing close up, disputing the lead, going on to beat I'm Serious in an 18 runners field. At Wexford Charle Brune carried 11st 4lb, tracking the leader, going clear four out, easing in the closing stages, beating Soul Season. "It will never happen again. It won't repeat itself. And you have to celebrate the moment," said Tom, set to sell Charle Brune in the sales. "We wish Tom all the best - and thank him for his support. A good night was had by all," added Maggie, owner of the pub for 22 years. Tom Shanahan and Charle Brune at The Horse & Hound Bar Lounge in Dhallah, County Tipperary. After tea LaMangaTorre CC went out to field with openers T. Rumi and H. James bowling some good lines in building early pressure. The third over saw the names in the scorebook as Rumi, got J. Perman to hit the ball to K. Wood at cover, for a catch. A. Alger came in to bat and looked to keep the runs moving, with some nice shots, building a partnership with K. Laundon. H. James got A. Alger to chip the ball straight to T. Rumi at 45, who made no mistake in taking the catch. (53/2 in the 12th over). F. Azfal went in at 4 seeing Alfas to the drinks break. (65/2 off 15 overs). C. Rumi and C. Wood came on to bowl, and were successful in keeping the batsmen down. F. Azfal fell in the 20th over, when clean bowled as C. Wood claimed his first wicket. K. Perman was in at 5, seeing K. Laundun finally give away his wicket as he pulled a shot to P. Harvey at midwicket, for C. Rumis first wicket. (95/4 from 23 overs). Three overs later saw another wicket fall, when P. Harvey forced K. Perman to sky the ball into the air, falling into the hands of J. Kinsella. The runs continued to tick along with A. Hussain and W. Ashraf in the middle. The return of H. James into the attack got A. Hussain to sky the ball to mid-on, where C. Wood took a nice catch. (129/6 of 29 overs). D. Walker came into bat and the runs ticked along once again, with some strong hitting of the ball. The 30 over mark saw Alfas 1st on 130/6. With the game in both teams favour, 41 runs to win, or 3 wickets to win, Alfas 1st lost one of their players early on. C. Wood and T. Rumi bowled in the final 10 overs, keeping it tight. The batsmen kept ticking
the runs, with the 33rd over seeing the wicket of W. Ashraf fall, when T. Rumi bowled a ball slightly wider, making the batsmen stretch and clipping the ball through to the keeper. (143/7). B. Ali was in at 9, but could only watch as C. Wood clean bowled D. Walker at 149/8, in the next over. K. Roper was the last man in, with 21 needed to win from 6 overs. Tight bowling saw the batsmen swing the bat and miss many times. The 36th over, bowled by C. Wood, saw the end of the game as a full toss to K. Roper got the batsmen to chip the ball up to C. Rumi at short cover - making no mistake in taking the catch. LaMangaTorre CC taking a victory by 20 runs. C. Wood finished with figures of 3-21 off 7.5 overs, with G. Neve the pick of the batsmen scoring 63. LaMangaTorre CC took 18 points from the victory, with Alfas claiming 8 points.

PREFERENTE DIVISION ROUNDUP BY STEVE HIBBERD Most of Spanish league football has reached its conclusion, although there still is the small matter of play offs to be decided. As regards the local Alicante region Preferente division, it is now known who will play who in the play offs for promotion to the Tercera division. Champions Intercity Alicante must travel to Utiel to play their first leg, whilst runners up Villajoyosa will need to make a long trip to Castellonense, for their first match. Hercules ´B´ (who just pipped Independent Alicante into the 3rd and final spot) have been rewarded with a home tie against Recambios Colon. For the first time ever, winners of the 4 preferente groups have been included in the Copa de Rey (Spanish FA cup). Alicante Intercity must play Puzol, then winners of Recambios Colon and Denia tie, for the right to play in the preliminary round of the national cup. Aspe (16th), Villena (17th) and Torrevieja (18th), have all been relegated to local Regional div 1, and will be replaced by Torrellano and Murada

CD Thader (plus one other). Which team/s will replace any of those promoted to tercera division (if any, for there is no automatic promotion), will be decided by Valencia FA at a later date. Thader Rojales have parted company with manager Jose Reina and sports director Adrian Pastor by mutual consent. Their 3 seasons in charge have seen the team no lower than 7th place, plus in their first season of 16/17, a play off slot was secured. There are also expected to be changes on the Thader board of directors (including president). Not since 07/08 season have the team played at Tercera division level, a status to which they fully intend to make a return.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Just half a point separated our top three teams in Monday’s Texas Scramble. By a whisker and with a nett score of 59.375 our winners were Ron Phipps, Mike Mahony and Mike Chapman. (Seems like Mike Chapman is mentioned a lot just lately)!

Onto Wednesday and it was round 5 (of 6) for the Club Championship Stableford. John Shervell and Alan Douglas both managed a ‘2’ today but went home empty handed after Reg Akehurst (at the ripe old age of 89) scored a hole in one on the 6th. Now a hole in one is a rare thing indeed but not long afterwards Andy McDonald also managed to get one! This time it was on the tricky 14th. Thanks for the beers boys! Ken Robertson took the honours on the day with a resounding 42 points. Hot on his heels, with 41, was Geoff Biggerstaff and in third place with 38 points was Olga Douglas. It was the ‘counter game’ on Friday and in first place with 96 points (which is 10 less than our record) were John and Ellen Drakesmith, Heinz Lei and the ever faithful ‘Albert’.

On Friday 24 May we travelled the short distance to La Finca, to play the monthly Stableford competition. The wind and fast greens had an impact on the scoring today.
