The ADAPT metal detecting club operates across the South of Alicante and into Murcia. With 32 English-speaking members, due to Spain’s draconian detecting laws on dry land, the club has been pushed toward beach and surf detecting, however, after 14 years ADAPT still continues to prosper.
Members get together on three days a week, all year round, to enjoy the fresh air and breathtaking sunrises, as they travel up to 45 minutes to get to a beach venue. Although every club member is licensed, with a photo ID, due to restrictions with metal detection on any land, the club efforts mainly help to address environmental issues, metal pollution that is invisible to the human eye on the beaches and in the sea.
They also collect the discarded fishing lead weights in the Mar Menor, handing them over to "Association Hippocampus" a project that protects the Sea Horse, which is almost extinct due to the toxicity of the sea.
The amount of metal rubbish on the beaches and in the shallow surf is remarkable. In one month alone, the club picked up 201 pieces of lead from the Mar Menor with their waterproof metal detectors, a figure that is generally repeated every month of the year.

The club works closely with the "Association Hippocampus" on many other environmental projects. In March, after special vetting, members were asked to use their specialist metal detectors on a sensitive project within Los Alcazares military base. Sixty people helped to clear up sections of the base, which included our MD club, scuba divers, a large contingent of Airforce, Army, and Navy volunteers, all helping to clear a massive 2,860 kilos of abandoned rubbish, consisting of metal, plastic, wood, boat parts and spent bullets.
This was all done on one hot day. Everyone was so friendly, and the exercise was all carried out with military precision. The club even had a visit from the Mayor of Los Alcázares who congratulated them on their achievements.
You might also have seen them starring on UK TV Channel 5 ‘Bargain-Loving Brits in the Sun’, recently, after they were filmed by Red Sauce Productions for the popular television programme. They were filmed on La Zenia Beach in 2023 as they searched for discarded metal beneath the sand that was invisible to the naked eye.
Just a few months ago, whilst looking for lead weights in the Mar Menor, one member unearthed a piece of lead in the shape of a female statue. It was definitely not a fishing weight.
As the group has a strong connection with the San Pedro Museum they delivered it to the experts for analysis. The curator was quite excited as the item was thought to date from the pre-Roman period! What a find! It's now being cleaned professionally, and it will soon be displayed in the museum for all to see.
Since then, following interest from the No. 1 UK metal detecting magazine " The Searcher" a published piece appeared in the October 2023 edition of the popular magazine.
The club also sponsors the ADAPT Theatre Group, (ATG), in San Pedro, Murcia, for who they shoulder the cost of putting on their yearly Christmas pantomime. They also help to produce an annual panto which always culminates with three sell-out shows in the San Pedro theatre, all proceeds from which are handed over to local charities, thereby increasing the funds donated by around 500%.
Great things are happening this year, 2024, for the ADAPT metaldetecting club, so if you would like to learn more than please get in touch with the local group leader, Roderick Toms, by email at: r.toms@btinternet.com

RESIDENTS THREATEN MAYOR WITH LEGAL ACTION OVER OR IHUELA COSTA RUBBISH
Residents of Orihuela Costa have been flooding social networks for several weeks with photographs of containers full of rubbish, a situation that is replicated across many different urbanisations. They claim that the coast "is a landfill," while describing a "sad and calamitous" situation which they define as "an attack on public health and hygiene due to the critical failures in the refuse collection service provided by the Orihuela Government."
Tired of the fact that the Council has failed to provide any solutions, AVCRL Asociación de vecinos Cabo Roig y LomasOrihuela Costa (AVCRL) has sent a letter to the mayor, Pepe Vegara, in which they warn of legal action "if within a few weeks, before the start of the summer season, the service is not functioning satisfactorily."
They also attached a hundred photos, all taken within the last two months, showing "the serious deficiencies" with which the service is being provided, especially over bank holidays and weekends, with up to four days of delay in the emptying many of the overflowing containers.
Thus, they argue that "the City of Orihuela is failing to comply with its obligations under the rules regarding waste collection and road cleaning in Orihuela Costa, generating serious public health and hygiene problems."
But, unfortunately, this is not new. This same situation has been denounced on many previous occasions by residents, "but still the Department of Street Cleaning and MSW has failed to adopt measures to provide the service, comply with its obligations, allocate adequate public resources that residents are charged for with their SUMA.”
In April, municipal sources said that "garbage was being collected normally, except for those occasions that were caused by breakdowns of trucks."
Beyond the problems generated by an old fleet, the association's letter points out that "the service is sadly lacking, poorly planned and does not have the necessary human, technical and material resources," noting that this in turn "generates a negative impact on the area and
decreases the income of commercial and tourist operations, causing loss of profits."
AVCRL insists that the ineffectiveness of the council shows "a clear disregard toward the resolutions handed down and a collective and illegal abandonment of this public service."
Without going further, they continue, "many streets of Orihuela Costa, especially in the interior area, are full of rubble at the moment, illegally deposited and without any control, because the councillor of Road Cleaning and RSU has failed to have them cleared away for more than four months, despite the appeals that the residents have been repeatedly made."
The letter asks the mayor to force the authorities and public officials of the Department of Road Cleaning and RSU and the Councillor of Orihuela Costa to provide the service normally. It also requests , in addition information regarding planning for the financial year 2024 and the list of technical and human resources available - and specifically for the summer period - as well as the recruitment plan.
On Thursday the Association also tabled a question at the Orihuela Plenary session where they asked the Councillor for street cleaning, Rocio Ortuño, about the 2.55 million euro emargency allocation promised to the service last September. Her response was to completely evade the question giving only a series of useless ‘sound bites’ that showed either her lack of knowledge about the subject or her unwillingness to work with Orihuela Costa residents in tackling this servious health and hygiene problem.

Elche Courts release five minors accused of a group rape in Dolores
The five young people, aged between 15 and 17 years, who were detained last November after being arrested in Dolores for the group rape of a 15- year-old girl when she was drunk, have been free for just over a week after having a court reject the extension of their confinement.
Four arrested for prostituting a woman at Torrevieja roundabout
Their immediate release has been ordered and the precautionary measure of detention is replaced by an order requiring them not to approach within 200 metres of the girl, either to her place of residence in Dolores or any other place frequented by the victim during the processing of the case.
The Civil Guard has arrested four members of a group accused of trafficking human beings for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
The victim, thought to be of Romanian nationality, tricked into coming to Spain to work as a cook, was forced to engage in prostitution on several roundabouts in Torrevieja to pay back an alleged debt of 3,000 euros contracted with the gang for travel, accommodation and general expenses.
Three of the four detainees were imprisoned in September last year with a fourth person arrested last week at a house in Orihuela Costa.
The court says that the prohibition of approach and communication with the victim is sufficient and it added that reports from Barcelona Toxicology and several expert reports are still pending, so there will still be several months before the investigation is concluded and the trial can be held.

Court of Violence against Women
The UGT has denounced a lack of personnel in the Orihuela Court of Violence against Women. Proof of the high workload, according to the union, is that it dealt with 1,859 cases in 2023. "Not only are they required to deal with criminal declarations and violations of sentences, they also handle divorces, pensions, guardianships and visitation regimes."
In a judicial district serving 234,000 people and 21 municipalities, with high percentages of foreign population, they state that the manpower in the courts needs to be increased.
THE EARTH SHAKES IN CARTAGENA
Cartagena registered two earthquakes during the early hours of Friday morning, according to the National Geographic Institute. The first of them, of 2.2 degrees of magnitude, took place around 2:50 a.m. with an epicenter in the Cartagena district of La Palma at a depth of two kilometers.
Less than two hours later, around 4:50 a.m., a second earthquake was recorded north of Cartagena with a magnitude of 1.6 degrees.
SHORTAGE OF TAXIS ON ORIHUELA COSTA
The problems with the availability of taxi drivers on the Oriola coast still have no solution. On Thursday, the Councilor for Transportation,Víctor Sigüenza, was tackled on the issue during the plenary session. In a question,he was once again reminded that a court ruling requires the Oriolano City Council to create eight new licenses. The writer of the question said that the government team was trying to delay compliance with the judicial resolution while waiting for the Generalitat to activate the Vega Baja Joint Benefit Area, which in practice would mean delegating
municipal responsibility for taxis to the autonomous administration.
The councillor said that he couldn’t be very specific in his response."We're working on it," he said.

With this decision, the former head of the Consell is exonerated from his last judicial procedure 15 years after the first investigation of him, the one known as the 'case of the suits', in 2009. Camps was accused of a crime of influence peddling in ideal competition with the crime of prevarication. Along with him, the Court also acquits the former councillors Alicia de Miguel, Manuel Cervera, and Luis Rosado and the officials of the Generalitat.

Orihuela Council loses lawsuit over Campoamor beach road
It seems that unless the Orihuela Council appeals to the Supreme Court, the road along the front of La Glea beach, next to the mouth of the Nacimiento River in Campoamor, is history.
Prior to the current works that are replacing the pavement with a wooden platform, the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV) had already made a decision regarding the appeal that the Council had filed with the Territorial Coastal Demarcation.
It is unknown when the mayor was notified of the judges' decision, but it is evident that Pepe Vegara's council and his legal team had already considered
the lawsuit lost prior to the work that was started by the Costas two weeks ago to remove the remnants of the tarmac road.
The solution adopted by Costas is the installation of a platform of wooden slats 55 metres long, three wide and three deep. There will also be improved access to the pedestrian walkway through improvements in the pavement, slope and levelling of the sand.
This is an action that the State says is correct because "it does not imply any modification of the drainage capacity of the river since the platform would be left at the level of the natural terrain and anchored to the old buried base of the road to prevent it from being carried away by floods."
So it seems that the complaints of the residents of Campoamor are being ignored. The closure to road traffic of the road following the 2019 Dana caused serious harm to them. While before they could cross from one bank of the river to the other along the beachfront, now drivers are forced to make a detour inland to go through the other road that crosses the promenade under the famous stone bridge, or, when this road is flooded, which is regularly the case, drive onto the N-332 itself.
The court's decision comes at a time when the government team shows some optimism in their relations with Costas. The hope of the local executive is that authorization will soon arrive from them to clear the mouth of the Nacimiento River of weeds. A place that once served as an improvised parking lot for bathers who came to La Glea and which is now completely inaccessible and represents an obvious fire risk for the summer.
Following the court ruling one Campoamor resident said, “I think that seeing the ways in which the Orihuela Council acts and the years and decades it takes to fix, repair, renovate and build any new construction, this, at least, is a solution that will be carried out immediately and effectively and of course it does not depend on the Council. The residents of Campoamor had little hope if we expected the City Council to win this lawsuit. They are clumsy even at litigating.”

The uprooted trees will me moved to other municipal green areas.

I FEEL LIKE THE MISSING GROOM AT MY OWN SILVER ANNIVERSARY PARTY
Ifeel like the missing groom at my own silver anniversary party!
This is a very significant week in the history of La Zenia and the entire Costa Blanca. It is the 25th anniversary of the opening of Paddy’s Point Pub. I opened the door of Costa Blanca’s first Irish Pub on 4th June 1999.
We staged the official opening a month later, when Pamela got off school, but the June 4th opening is the one that is the milestone. But first things first on this rather special occa-
sion, and the most important fact is to congratulate Hazel and Rory on the fantastic job they have done since they purchased the business from me a decade ago.
They have added the best food venue to what was in my time only the best and most popular pub in Spain.
We never wanted anybody but Hazel and Rory to succeed us – and we worked it out with that end in mind. That our faith in this young, hard-working couple was well founded and borne out by results, is a source of immense satisfaction to the Comaskey family.
I am not normally great on remembering dates, but I woke up on the morning of 19th March this year, and that day 25 years came flooding back to me.
Overseen by the genius wood-crafter that was Ronnie Coogan, we loaded a container full of bar furniture, fittings and timber and waved it on its way to Spain.
Part of the cargo was a long wooden sign with the name ‘PADDY’S POINT’ engraved thereon. A couple of days later, Ronnie, my great friend Joe Bardon and I headed off to cross from Rosslare, with a newly purchased American car filled with tools and oozing this great sense of adventure.
Included in my vivid memory of the great challenge is the sad fact that neither Joe nor Ronnie are with us anymore. May God rest them both. We used to have a photo on the bar wall of Ronnie working away on a halffinished counter, in the midst of saw-dust and chaos!
Great friendships were formed through Paddy’s Point and one of the most unlikely was that of Ronnie, with his broad Navan accent, and Englishman, Howard Wrigley, who spoke with his undiluted Leeds dialect. For years afterwards whenever I met either of the two boys, I would be given the price of a pint for the other! I was saddened a couple of weeks back to learn of Howard’s passing. May he too rest in peace. One more link lost to the ‘old’ Paddy’s Point.
There were so many trials and tribulations in getting the pub ready for opening – but we got there; because I set a target and stuck to it. I said that if we waited until we were ‘ready’, we would never open and so I set a deadline of ‘opening the door as promised on 4th June.’
My squash buddy, Oliver Carey asked if he could come and work the bar. Oliver was a brilliant front-of-house man and exceptionally popular in those early days – especially with the ladies. Many is the time I had to ‘save’ him! In the midst of turmoil we got lucky with staff – none more so than the famous Yolanda. Through Yolanda, we sourced a bunch of great third-level students she had worked with in Dublin.
One of these young girls was Hazel, the current co-owner. Hazel also worked for a time as a valued member of Ian’s ‘Comaskey Properties’ staff. (That company also since sold off).
Yolanda moved on and is now general manager of the Hotel Playa de Torrevieja, (formerly Cabo Cervera). Rory came to us a couple of years later and he too showed exceptionally qualities in working his way up the ladder
to being co-owner.
‘Time and tide stands for no man.’ The past is no more than a footnote in history – but I am so proud of what Pamela and I founded in La Zenia. We created an Irish community on the Costa – because people wanted to buy apartments close to an Irish pub. I was the first with live GAA and bringing wellknown music acts out from Ireland. We established the landmark: the landmark is the history … and history cannot be rewritten.
But everybody must live in the present and this is why it is so satisfying for my family to see Paddy’s Point continue to grow and prosper.
Full credit must go to Hazel and Rory for the effort they have put into the business over the past ten years or so.
We made amazing friends from the very beginning – many of whom we cherish to this day. We don’t get invited to the 20th or 25th celebrations, but like Loretta Lynn in ‘Coalminers Daughter’, it is secure in the memory of me and many more of those early ‘pilgrims!’
Great memories indeed!
DON’T FORGET
There’s one thing for which you should be thankful – only you and God have all the facts about yourself.
Full credit must go to Hazel and Rory for the effort they have put into the business over the past ten years or so.

Five of the top 10 municipalities in Spain with the highest immigrant population are in the Alicante province, with an average percentage of 65 percent.
They are Rojales, San Fulgencio, Llíber, El Poble Nou de Benitatxell and Daya Vieja, this is according to data from the General Council of Economists of Spain (CGE).
Rojales was the 3rd highest with 17,389 foreign people, 68.99% of the population.
In 5th is San Fulgencio, with 9,680 foreigners, 67.36% of the total; 7th is Llíber, with 64.25%, 9th place is El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, with 4,926 foreigners, 62.44% of the total; and 10th is Daya Vieja, with 672 foreigners, 61.31%.

from the UK who deal with their shipping containers and onward deliveries. They have just acquired, an EORI Number as of 2020.
EORI stands for“Economic Operators Registration and Identification number”.
Businesses and people wishing to trade must use the EORI number as an identification number in all customs procedures when exchanging information with Customs administrations. This is imperative now, as we there is a lot more paperwork involved in moving to and from Spain and we are on hand to guide you through the paperwork process, including the TOR1 online Government page ( Transfer of Residence, if you are resident in Spain , looking to repatriate your belongings ,to the UK ).
Having one common type of identification number across the EU is more efficient, both for economic operators and customs authorities.
It is also more efficient for statistical purposes and security purposes

Absence of Vegara and Mestre is deafening as Wesenauers needlessly arrested
The Orihuela Local Police and the Seprona Civil Guard arrested Kimberly and Love Wesenauer of the Finca Langostina on Monday as they tried to defend what they consider to be their land,in the face of the judicial rulings that say otherwise. The order was signed by Judge Francisca Isabel Fernández Zapata, head of the Court of First Instance No.4 of Orihuela, when sending the judicial commission to supervise the handing over of the land to the builders of the new estate.
The two young daughterswere arrested and placed in handcuffs as they opposed the forced eviction of a section of the 200-yearold estate that has been surrounded by new tourist housing in the last twenty years.
They were taken to the Civil Guard barracks in Torre de la Horadada.
Three Former Orihuela Councillors Acquitted
The Provincial Court of Alicante has acquitted three former Orihuela councillors, accused of prevarication and fraud for, allegedly, paying almost two million euro in invoices without a contract during the period between 2004 and 2008. The court acquitted them without even holding the trial,as the defence of the former PP councillors Antonio Rodríguez Murcia,Manuel Abadía and José Antonio Aniorte (former councillor for Orihuela Costa),raised the concern that the Prosecutor's Office failed to comply with the procedural deadlines to file an appeal against the initial filing of the case.
As a result of the presentation of anomalies, the trial did not take place.

The Castle of Santa Bárbara in Alicante will be transformed into a medieval time capsule for a weekend, as the iconic fortress plays host to a medieval market for the weekend starting on Friday 7 June.
For three days, this historic space in the Alicante capitalthe most visited in the entire Valencian Community - will fully immerse itself in the Middle Ages with decoration, craft stalls, theatrical performances with characters, traditional games, gastronomy, and live music with instruments of the time.
This is the third edition of this event organized by the Forge of Vulcano, the second with a medieval setting after the success achieved last year and after an inaugural pirate-themed proposal that brought together nearly 20,000 people in 2022. In this sense, the medieval market in the Castle of Santa Bárbara is once again a unique opportunity to enjoy an initiative that combines history, culture, and leisure through the privileged views of the city and the coast offered by Mount Benacantil.

AIRLINES AT ALICANTE AIRPORT TO BENEFIT FROM EXPANSION
Both the Government and Aena feel there is no need for a 2nd runway
It might not be what some people are asking for, but aircraft landing at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernandz Airport will have more space to perform their ground manoeuvres, as the airport authority Aena has put out to tender the construction of a new aircraft taxiway for 17.47 million euro, although the budget also includes other improvements at the airport facilities.
The execution period for this action is 27 months, in order not to interfere with the airport's operations, and the objective is more efficient management of the flight field. The expanded surface where the new taxiway will travel will be paved and the
drainage system will be adapted, and beacons and new mega lighting towers will be installed. The work also includes the adaptation and extension of the fencing and perimeter road of the airport complex and the extension of the current anti-FOD (Foreign Object Damage) barrier in the expanded area.
This action, together with the one that will be tendered soon for the drafting of the terminal expansion project, will provide the airport with the necessary capacity to meet the traffic demand of the coming years, according to Aena, without the need for a second runway.

HOW IS LIFE FOR YOU IN TORREVIEJA?
Leader
of the PSOE in Torrevieja, Barbara Soler.
Torrevieja has had a bit of bad press in the UK recently, and although there are problems, the comments in the mainstream media were a little unfair, but we thought we would ask you.
What do you think about Torrevieja? What do you like? What do you not like? And what would you say to those who could actually
change things for the better?
Although you can say anything, the last question is particularly important, because as a result of the media interest, The Leader has been speaking with Barbara Soler, the head of the PSOE in Torrevieja, and currently opposition councillor, and she would like to know.
Moreover, if your question warrants it, she
would like to raise your concerns with the local government, and not only get answers, but also work towards finding solutions to any real problems that do exist.
So, it’s over to you. Send your questions, comments, criticisms, or praise, to office@theleader.info, and we will compile them over the next couple of weeks, and present them to Barbara in a conversation
LET US HAVE YOUR OPINION OF LIFE IN TORREVIEJA
Email us at: office@theleader.info and let us know what you think.
you will also be able to listen to as a podcast, and read about in The Leader Newspaper.

SHARING CHECKPOINT LOCATIONS IS A SERIOUS OFFENCE
We spoke last week about why you should never warn about checkpoints, and how the DGT are stepping up plans to deal with those who do, but a number of questions have arisen about sharing the information on mobile apps.
The first point we have to make is that if you have a mapping app, Google maps or Tomtom for example, and that app tells you about the location of fixed radar cameras, then that is not a problem. In fact, the DGT wants people to know where fixed speed cameras are located and publish them on their
own website, as these cameras are in high-risk areas, and the idea is to promote safer behaviour in the areas where they are located.
The problems surround the awareness or sharing of temporary locations of checks, or checkpoints, that is not permitted.
Regarding the sharing of information via mobile apps, we can look at Galicia as an example, the autonomous community in which, by far, the most use is made of this type of applications, where prosecutions have already been successful.
Regarding the sanctions they are not fines processed based on the Traffic and Road Safety Law but based on the Citizen Security Law.
The exact amount of the fine received by the administrators of the two sanctioned WhatsApp groups so far, based on what is established by the Law and since these are serious infractions, amount to between 601 and 3,000 euro. The final amount is calculated based on factors such as the damage caused, the profit obtained or the nature of the infringement.
The big question that arises as a result of all of the above is whether any citizen can be sanctioned for the mere fact of being part of a group or apps that warn of the presence of police controls or being a member of the community.
The response from the Guardia Civil is that "they continue to investigate the association and the social media groups" and that, at first, they plan to "go against the administrators", but "later also against those who make the notifications directly”.
As we explained last week, the idea of sanctioning those who share the information is not about the desire to collect fines, but in order to preserve the activities of these checkpoints which could be looking for a dangerous fugitive, a drunk or drugged driver, or the victim of a kidnapping, like the French film we reminded you about last week. Or, one of many other reasons with the single aim of keeping everyone as safe as possible.
"We should not downplay the importance of these warnings, which serve to prevent the Security Forces and Bodies from being able to effectively fight against road crime and also common crime, in the current situation of very specialised and violent crime that uses drug trafficking networks", added the Guardia Civil.

TWENTY YEARS OF SPANGLES HARMONY
ith twenty years of singing harmony together,Spangles is excited to tell you more about their plans to celebrate this momentous event throughout 2024!
The brainchild of Lyn Baines and Anthea Prentice, back in 2004,the chorus continues the ethos of friendship through the love of singing.
As they have said many times,Spangles is more than just a group of girls singing together once a week. Not only do they sing together, but they also play together and look out for each other. With many members living away from their homeland, family and friends,Spangles is their second family.
This year they held a successful Open House and were very happy to welcome several new members.By the end of March, some of them were able to sing in two invitational concerts in Jalón and Calpe, and a Spring Concert in Sucina in April.
“Our new members are amazing and have learned our repertoire in a very short time”said Musical Director,Babs.“We’re so very proud of how well they have grown and become part of our community”.
Afternoon Teas are something Spangles is famous for,so this had to be the choice for the start of their 20th anniversary events.Held on Thursday,23 May at the beautiful Butterfly Garden,Spangles didn’t disappoint. The event was a sell-out,and the afternoon was a huge success.
“We received lots of lovely comments from our guests about the authentic delicious food, the organisation of our event and of course, our singing! We’re all very happy and proud”said Lyn Baines,Chorus Manager.“Every single Spangle contributed to the event and worked

Improvements to La Marina tourist office to cost 275,000 euros
San Fulgencio Council will rebuild the town's tourism office, located in the La Marina Urbanization, which, with the nearby urban centres of Guardamar and Elche, has led to an enormous population growth in the town thanks to the result of numerous international residents.
With the proposed expansion, the built surfaces will be increased by 48.69 m2.The contract has been put out to tender for an amount of 275,057.42 euros.
The tourist office is located in the eastern leg of the building which it shares with a health centre. The two buildings are separated by a porch area common to both at the southeast corner of the plot.
The expansion will be carried out by extending the existing tourist office to the north, providing it with two more
offices,an office area and the adaptation of the existing toilets for people with reduced mobility. The rest of the existing building remains unchanged. The increase in surface area is 48.69 m2 built,an increase that is unimportant compared to the total equipment surface of 5,984.10 m2,as it represents 0.76% of the total surface area of the facility.
The tender is issued after the contracting agreement approved in the ordinary session of the Local Government Board held on December 28,2023 for the drafting of the project, which was carried out by Juan Martínez Arquitecto SLP for 8,819.71.The deadline for submitting offers has already ended,so the Council should award the contract in the coming weeks.

Long overdue facelift for La Marina Tourist Office
I CAN’T DO IT....
BY JOHN MCGREGOR
´It’s the only time I go anywhere these days – I look for ward to it every year…´.
To see everyone again, to relive all those great times is just wonderful…´
´I was so upset last year, I was diagnosed with cancer two days before and they kept me in hospital, so I missed it…´
I´m just back from two weeks in the sunny UK – well, it was some of the time. My wife and I were busy up and down the country seeing all the family like you do, but one of the main purposes of the trip was my RAF reunion, held now every year since 2012 apart from a Covid break. Sorry if I’ve told you this before, but the reunion came as a result of a book * wot I rote in 2010 about my five years serving Her Majesty in the late Sixties, down on the south coast.
After publication I came over to the UK to do some P/R in the area, doing four Waterstones book-signings, a number of newspaper articles and an interview on BBC Radio Solent.
Amazingly some of my old mates (and a few old ladies) heard and read about it, the word went round and as a result we had our first reunion in 2012.
Unbelievably over sixty souls attended. It was expected to be a one-off but it went so well we´ve now had eleven. Although the majority of our members come from various places in the UK some come from the USA, Thailand, France and Spain.
The reunion venue was our old RAF station at Thorney Island, next one along going east from Hayling Island and Portsmouth (the home of that minor branch of the Services, the Royal Navy.)
Thorney closed as an RAF station in 1976 and has since changed military hands several times. It´s now run by the army and so to get onto the island for our reunion at the Sailing Club I need to let the army know in advance who’s coming.
Everyone must bring their own photo ID and let me know beforehand their car details. The barrier we used to have to man on a Sunday afternoon to keep the public out is now a full guardroom protected by spotty Pongos (army bods to you) who have guns and look about fourteen.
My greatest friend in life Martin and I
planned the reunion together in 2011. Very sadly he later died in 2019 but today with a little help from others we have carried on.
Yes, we have steadily lost members but somehow others have joined in over the years to keep the numbers up: two weeks ago forty attended. Food and beverages are laid on and there is a bar to keep everyone happy. The Club is a lovely spot looking over Chichester Harbour, and boats come and go from the club all day.
After a few introductory words of welcome from me, my friend Joe takes over to instigate the raffle and then we go outside for a special tribute to those no longer with us.
This is run by our man for all seasons, Pete.
In his normal Remembrance Day uniform he hoists the Royal Air Force ensign up the flagpole to the RAF march and poppy wreaths with a picture (made by Pete) are laid at the foot for us to remember those who have passed away during the last twelve months. We stand quietly together and with Pete´s words - we remember them. We then return to the clubhouse and get on with our celebration of our great times together as we serviced Her Majesty´s finest – in our case the mighty Hercules transport aircraft.
However… to get personal for a minute, in the last few years I have had a few health concerns: chemotherapy two years ago and then radiotherapy last year for my Prostate Cancer, plus a few other irritating issues, but nothing compared to some people.
I am so lucky to have the wonderful Spanish health service to keep me safe with wonderful treatment. But during some down times I have wondered whether I should go on with running the reunion as it takes some organizing, especially with us living abroad, and exacting travel and costs playing a part. So it was with these thoughts in mind I approached this year´s reunion with some questions in my mind for the future.
As ever the big day of May 11th dawned
sunny and bright. My wife Anne has now helped considerably in the last few years and we arrived early to be greeted gratefully by the army at the barrier.
Apparently their printer had gone down and I dutifully supplied them with a copy of the list of attendees. Our official time is 12 noon to 6 pm, but we got set up by 11.30 with name badges ready and organizing the tables and chairs in the big lounge to our satisfaction.
I was standing outside the main door of the club enjoying the weather and the stunning view, when round the corner from the car park came three of my old friends - early. Two of them I had actually written about in the book as they were both tremendous characters.
Last year I organized a birthday cake and celebration for one named Julian who I´d found out was to be eighty in a few days time. I
gently asked the eldest, Ron, 84, what the reunion meant to him.
He lives in the Midlands and as above told me it’s the only event he leaves home for today. Later I saw him splitting his sides with laughter in a small group. Other relevant heartfelt comments are as above.
So, in conclusion they answered my question fully to a man. I have to keep our reunion going, as long as I have men like these as true friends – good men who want to come every year - and it would be very churlish, if that’s the word to deny them.
Per Ardua Al Astra (RAF motto meaning ´Through Toil To the Skies´).

Lo Crispin Golf Society at El Plantio
On 29th May thirty two members 'teed it up' at El Plantio to compete in an Individual Stableford competition and the Society's 2nd Eclectic of the year. The weather was almost perfect for golf, with just a few occasional breezes. A number of fairways looked like patchwork quilts, with polythene covering great swathes of them. Presumably these polythene patches are there to enable the grass to regrow, having been depleted following the long drought. However,

I for one and others lost balls under these sheets !
Many of the bunkers, as they have been for some time now, were devoid almost of any sand. Some of the tee boxes were also very scruffy. Following the game as usual, we returned to the Lo Crispin Tavern, where we were served Tapas by the helpful and friendly staff.

LAMARINA GOLFSOCIETY
The members of the La Marina Golf Society gathered at the renowned Bonalba golf course this week for their Stapleford competition.
While the players eagerly took to the impeccably maintained course, a sombre note hung in the air as they fondly remembered two cherished members who had recently passed away. Louvain Smith and Roy Wealleans had been loyal and beloved fixtures of the society for many years, and their absence was felt by all. Despite the melancholy undercurrent, the golfers were determined to honour their departed friends by playing a round worthy of their memory.
The Bonalba course itself was in exceptional condition, with only a
minor inconvenience of hollowtined greens failing to dampen the players' spirits or hinder their performance. As the competition unfolded, a new member, Peter Mills, emerged victorious with an impressive score of 37 points, closely followed by another newcomer, James Rolston, who secured second place with 36 pts. Rounding out the top 3 was the seasoned player Garry Garbett, who carded a respectable 35 pts. Adding to the day's excitement, Lesley Cullen managed to claim the nearest the pin accolade on the 8th hole, while Sue Saunders pulled off a remarkable feat, sinking a two on the par 4 9th hole to win the rollover pot. The members gathered at the clubhouse, sharing refreshments and celebrating the day's achievements, all the while keeping the memories of their departed friends close to their hearts.
