C.L.A.R.O and its coalition partner Cambiemos Orihuela presented a motion in Thursday’s Plenary meeting of Orihuela council aimed at finding a solution to the problem of abandoned

urbanisations in Orihuela Costa whose residents, although paying taxes, have, sometimes for decades, received no basic services.

Such is the state of urban planning in Orihuela that there is

no available information on the scale of this problem.

It no doubt affects thousands of property owners in several different urbanisations.

Responsibility for these urbanisations should have been taken over by the Council once

completed by the developer.

But in many cases the town hall has not supervised the completion of the developer’s obligations and has not taken over responsibility for these urbanisations.

The consequence is that the residents have been abandoned to their sorry fate of inadequate basic services for which they pay in full their rates and taxes.

The deficiencies are many. To cite just a few: In Las Ocas, streets are not tarmacked and green areas are not maintained.

In Las Mimosas the streets are similarly not tarmacked and street lighting is insufficient. Mil Palmeras has access difficulties.

And Montezenia where citizen’s anger is most strong, there are problems of security, sewage spills, rat infestation, pathways in dangerous conditions, street lighting which has never been connected and children’s playground areas dangerously neglected.

Since the problems involved in these abandoned urbanisations have been ignored for many years, expectations were that the Popular PartyCiudadanos government would find a way to oppose the motion.

urbanisations in this situation (non-recepcionadas), to seek compliance by developers of outstanding obligations and if this is not possible, the government should provide the financial means to do so with a view to their formal acceptance by the town council and their inclusion in the full range of municipal services.

No doubt C.L.A.R.O.-Cambiemos, the authors of the motion and the citizens groups in the affected urbanisations whose relentless pressure over the years has led to this success, will need to hold the government to their responsibilities and in the meantime to facilitate all manner of specific help to deal with urgent problems in these shamefully abandoned urbanisations.

However, most unexpectedly, the C.L.A.R.OCambiemos motion was approved unanimously in the Plenary meeting of the council.

The sense of the motion was also to change the model of development of Orihuela Town Council and to cease the endless approval of the construction of new housing in Orihuela Costa without ensuring adequate services.

This is a major step forward since it obliges the government to provide complete details of all

No Panto again was the cry! Are we downhearted?

You bet we are!

As the group can’t gain access to a theatre to either rehearse in or put on a panto due to the pandemic, we can only hope that things improve next year when we can again entertain our lovely audiences with some fun and frolics, whilst at the same time being able to donate lots of money to well deserving local causes.

In the meantime, to ensure our Group stays together until we can start rehearsals in a safe manner, lots of social events are going to be planned like the lunch we just enjoyed, the first meeting of our group since lockdown.

The lunch was made even more special with the attendance of one of our best loved members, Joan Waddington, who, unfortunately, due to ill health, is no longer able to tread the boards with us.

Joan was the instigator of our fabulous ‘Oscar Award’ evenings held after each pantomime, so we decided it only fitting to award Joan her very own Oscar for being ‘The Best All Round Pantomime Performer’. It was presented to her by Dee who has taken over the role of Social Secretary that Joan did so well over recent years.

Cámara Orihuela joins Orihuela Costa business in demanding safe corridors Pedro Mancebo calls for “coordination between administrations” and the implementation of controls that guarantee that the virus does not travel British and Irish businessmen are very affected and consider that the imposed quarantine creates unnecessary social alarm in the UK Expat Business Associations on the Orihuela Costa have mobilised to support the Valencian Government in requesting that the Community be exempt from the obligatory quarantine introduced last Sunday by the British Government.

To do this, they have joined forces with the Orihuela Chamber of Commerce in, according to the Chamber Vice President, Pedro Mancebo, an initiative, in which they are trying to contact the United Kingdom's ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliot, and the Community President, Ximo Puig, to explain their position.

The Orihuela Chamber met with businessmen in the Orihuela Costa on Friday where they pledged their absolute support to companies in

this tourist area and also those in the rest of the Vega Baja, managed

by British and Irish businessmen.

The Expat community in the municipality is enormous and its businessmen were the first to raise their voices after the British government's announcement of the 14-day quarantine for travellers arriving into the UK. "All Spanish companies are affected, but today we wanted to be here to show our support for the owners of expat businesses,” said the first vice president of the Orihuela Chamber.

Mancebo was accompanied by board member and local businessman, Raymond Kearney, along with many other coastal businessmen who have shown their outrage at the imposition of the British quarantine.

"They feel very affected and do not understand why such drastic measures are adopted when they have been extremely scrupulous in applying all the safety and health protocols in their activities," said Pedro Mancebo, “especially as the rate of infections is much lower here than in any area of the United Kingdom, so the measure imposed appears not to be a strictly medical decision".

Mancebo asked for "coordination between administrations", as well as that the necessary measures are taken to guarantee the safety of the travelers, with the carrying out of tests and controls of entry and exit by countries.

"In this way we will guarantee that no person who may have COVID-19 leaves our country, but we will also guarantee that no one with the disease comes into our area on holiday," he said.

Discover the cultural and historic heritage of Orihuela The Councillor for Culture, Mar Ezcurra, has announced a program of guided tours around Orihuela museums, that will take place every Saturday during August and September at 11am.

They will have a maximum capacity of 20 people and registrations can be made by phone 672 219 071.

She explained that "In order to publicise our museums and discover the stories they display, we have designed this free guided tour program that will be offered by our cultural guides."

On Saturday September 12, the cultural visit will be to el Museo de la Muralla, where we can enjoy the archaeological site, including the wall and four towers dating from the Almohad period, Arab baths, an

Islamic street and medieval houses, Gothic palace and architectural remains of the Casa del Paso (18th century).

On Saturday, August 8 and September 19, the party will be taken to San Juan de Dios Regional Archaeological Museum, where materials of varied and wide chronology are preserved, ranging from the Paleolithic period up to the beginning of the 19th century. Most of the exhibits are of local or regional origin.

On Saturday, August 22 and September 26, the guided tour will be at la Casa Museo Miguel Hernández, the house where the Oriolan poet Miguel Hernández lived with his family. On Saturdays August 1 and 22, the tour “Orihuela: Legends and Mysteries” will be held, which will begin at 9:00 p.m. from the Pozos de Cremós and will visit the most emblematic sites in the old town until reaching the Puerta de la Olma (next to the Diocesan College Santo Domingo) where famous people will appear from Orihuela's history.

On the 15th and 29th of August, it will be the turn of “Medieval Orihuela”, where many of the most important scenes of the city will be revived. It will depart from the Puerta de la Olma, where Mariano

Fines for not wearing masks in Pilar Both the Local Police and Civil Protection volunteers have been raising the awareness of the necessity for people to wear facemasks in the municipality explaining the benefits of using the mask to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

In recent days, however, there have been 12 sanctions in the town for not complying with the regulations regarding the mandatory use of masks, 3 for street vendors, and 9 for alcohol consumption on the beach.

Meanwhile, the authorities have also made a special appeal to the youth of the town to be aware of the situation and to take seriously the mandatory use of the mask.

As we moan, for different reasons, the loss of the traditional summer break it appears in this period of greed and selfishness some have taken advantage of the chaos and are looking after themselves.

Like a sinking ship everyone is grabbing for a lifeboat.

We have guests who have been visiting us for the past six years, same two weeks at the start of August. They book well in advance, fifteen months before they travel and reserve flights as soon as the airlines have published their schedules.

No difference for this year, with flights booked and paid for and a busy family looking forward to their holiday away from the day to day stresses.

Three weeks to go and out of the blue, EasyJet cancel the flight, and the following one. No reason just cancelled.

Without going into the whys and wherefores, if you have an agreement with a third party to supply you with a service, then it should be met!

Outrage following first bullfight since lockdown Spain held its first bullfight since the coronavirus lockdown in Avila, just a few miles from Madrid. This year, bullfighting has been cancelled in Spain owing to the pandemic.

Footage from the match shows that the bullring was half-empty; several animal activists have also condemned last week's event on grounds of animal cruelty and have urged the government to ban it.

But when is an agreement not an agreement?

It strikes me when the small print drawn up by some clever legal mind is more than often tucked away out of immediate sight, and allows the supplier to cancel for some obscure reason or other.

A report by the London School of Economics has found that Brexit will deliver a "double shock" to the economy, especially the sectors that remained comparatively unaffected during the pandemic. The report also predicts that the industries affected by the pandemic and Brexit will be different and a "simultaneous impact" from both will be felt in a post-Brexit and post-Covid UK.

That doesn’t really make a lot of sense with the ‘staycasions’ fully booked to overflowing and councils trying to keep people away from the popular hotspots, anyway there is also a loss of revenue because the planes are not flying

As such, what has been agreed has no value and cannot be called an agreement.

Of course, there is a safety reason because of the ballooning of Covid 19, not only in Spain but elsewhere, although the Spanish health care has a tighter grip on it than most countries.

Hence our friend, who thought they had an agreement to go on holiday, sit at home wondering when and if they will get their money back from a firm that has had the use of it for close on a year.

The British Government has said the reason for the cancellation of the ‘airbridge’ is that the virus has taken hold in a second and more serious wave. That seems right to me.

There are a lot of words being expanded about the cancellation of the ‘airbridge’ to Spain by the British Government.

Then again I have heard it said that Boris’s team does not want the embarrassment, with several Spanish municipalities banning visitors from the United Kingdom, because they have had enough of the rowdiness of some of the British tourists, who seem to roam the streets, day and night fuelled by booze causing disruption and in some particular cases, damage.

When it was announced it was clearly stated that the situation would be monitored regularly and if things changed health wise, then it would be withdrawn.

No small print there.

The favourite reason put out by the pundits is to stop people spending their money outside of the U.K., so as to bolster the finances of the Boris administration.

Costa Blanca should be exempt from UK quarantine The President of the Valencian government, Ximo Puig, has asked the UK government to exempt travellers from Costa Blanca from the 14-day quarantine rule. Puig said that coronavirus infection rates in Costa Blanca were lower than Britain and all safety measures were being taken. He also said that this move would deal a severe blow to the tourism industry in the region.

WHO: Travel restrictions not the answer The World Health Organisation on Monday said that countries cannot ban international travel indefinitely as economies need to be reopened.

Orihuela introduces a pioneering camera system to control occupancy on its beaches

U3A Social Events team Torrevieja U3A, despite having been at a virtual standstill for the past few months as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic and now also for its annual summer closure, is pleased to announce that its newly formed Social Events team have managed to communicate by various means and have been able to put together a small selection of events for its members to participate in over the coming months. Corona virus permitting that is!!

The councilor for Modernization, Sabina-Goretti Galindo, together with collegues from the beaches and emergencies, were at the Orihuela Costa town hall on Tuesday morning where, they introduced the new camera system that will allow monitoring of occupancy on La Costa beaches.

These state of the art systems don’t shoot images, but instead they detect body temperatures through which the public will be able to find out the occupation in real time of each of the beaches and coves on the Oriolan coast using a heat map.

“These cameras also provide quick action in case safety distances are not being respected and also, in cases where the maximum capacity is exceeded by body temperature,” Galindo explained.

The project, which is part of the "Smart City" strategy for the implementation of intelligent service

systems, is being pioneered in Orihuela at provincial and national level, with the municipality being the first city to implement the service on its beaches.

Councillor Galindo said, "we are modernising the administrative links to what will be our" Smart City ", allowing us to obtain data that allows us to carry out more effective policies and to have safer beaches".

Hidraqua installed the cameras and as its manager Alonso added, “we developed an algorithm that allows us to transform a high definition television image into heat maps that indicate the density of occupation of the beaches. ‘Did I tell you the one about …?’

I

cannot remember if I have told you this before, so I’ll tell you again anyway. The passage of time has a natural degeneration in the brain that means that we reach a stage where we cannot remember things like we used to.

All I am prepared to say about this condition and me, is that the editor has to keep a close eye in order to prevent me sending in the same article every week. But happily I have read somewhere (darned if I can remember where) that the consumption of certain foods will slow the process of memory loss. We will come back to those recommended foods in a moment … hopefully!

Stress is one of the brain’s worst enemies: If not dealt with, it will eventually destroy brain cells and damage the region of the brain involved in the formation of new memories; and to a lesser extent, the retrieval of old ones.

Improving your memory depends on having a healthy brain. This same rule applies to the student studying for an exam, the working professional, or the old newspaper columnist with grey hair trying to enhance the grey matter.

We have a lot of brain cells; millions in fact, and if we accept that stress destroys a portion of them, as does alcohol abuse and chemicals purposely and inadvertently taken into the body, we have to utilise whatever remains to its capacity.

So, how can we hope to improve whatever bit of frazzled brain we have left, I hear you holler. A friend of mine gave me a present of vitamin ‘B’ tablets, with the accompanying advice that they improve the brain and memory. Holy God, I hadn’t realised I was that obvious – and I would have taken offence only I had forgotten something – which I can’t remember now: and I don’t know where I left the tablets.

Not getting enough shut-eye will affect your memory as well, because when you are deprived of sleep your brain does not operate at full capacity.

Creativity and critical thinking skills are first to be compromised. Sleep is critical to learning, because research shows that sleep is necessary for memory consolidation and the key memory-enhancing activity occurs during the deepest stages of sleep.

A bit of good news for those of us with damaged brain cells is that it is all a cod that you cannot teach an old dog new tricks. The human brain has an astonishing ability to adapt and change, even well into old age.

‘Laughter is the best medicine’ we have often been told, and it really is one of the best medicines for the brain. Unlike emotional responses, which are limited to specific areas of the brain, laughter involves multiple regions across the whole brain.

Listening to jokes and working out punch lines activates areas of the brain vital to learning and creativity. So – this spate of Covid WhatsApp ‘funnies’ are not a waste of timer after all!

Humans are social animals and we do not thrive in isolation. I am coming to a bit of good news, folks, so please pay attention.

Research shows that having meaningful relationships (that means with sex, for those of you with total memory loss) are vital not only to emotional health, but brain health as well. A study at the Harvard School of Public Health found that people with the most active social lives (suspect more of the above included here) had the slowest rate of memory decline.

Now that you get the picture, what should you eat when out on all these post-lockdown dinner dates?

Here we get back to those beneficial brain foods I referred to at the top of the piece.

I have often heard that fish is good for the brain and this is certainly true. Fish contains fatty acids which helps the nervous systems, provides iodine and thereby enhances the intellectual capacity.

Popeye was spot on about spinach, because it has been found to be full of lutein, which protects the brain from degeneration. It is also rich in folate, a vitamin that increases the speed of information processing and improves mental performance.

Celery also has components which reduce the negative effects of aging, as well as helping to reduce the release of molecules that cause inflammation of the brain resulting in memory loss. Blueberries prevent diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia because they contain a pigment plant called anthocyanin.

"We thank the President for his presence and his commitment to our Municipality," said Mayor Jose Manuel Butron.

"It is an honour for our people," said the Mayor, who showcased the Vega Baja town's history to President Puig, along with other dignitaries and councillors.

Councillor Ana Belen said: "I had the opportunity to make known first-hand the Los Montesinos project, where the pathways are born, to the President of the Valencian Government Ximo Puig, who is very interested with what happens in the municipalities.

National Court reopens investigation into former King Juan Carlos The judge summons retired police officer and businessman Juan Villalonga to testify

to events that occurred before the abdication of the Juan Carlos as Monarch.

National Court Manuel judge, García Castellón, has agreed on Monday to reopen the so-called ‘pieza Carol’, which saw and audio interview between the retired police commissioner José Manuel Villarejo and businesswoman Corinna Larsen which was filed in 2018.

However, the then investigator, Judge Diego de Egea, sent the part related to the alleged payment of commission for the work to the Prosecutor's Office and, the authorities opened proceedings, which is what has involved the king emeritus in the investigation.

The judge has summoned them both to appear on 7 and 8 September, along with businessman Juan Villalonga, who was a partner of Villarejo in the Cenyt Group, and Rafael Redondo, who also participated in the talks.

In a statement on Monday Judge García Castellón warns that, after analysing various documents recently sent by the Judicial Police, there are "sufficient indications" of a crime. Among these documents, he cites an official letter sent by the Police on January 31, 2019 with two new audios of conversations between Villarejo and Larsen found in the former's home and that, "in police judgment", could "have a criminal appearance". These new files are the main basis for reopening the case.

In these audios it is alleged that the conversation centred on the former king’s ‘supposed’ fortune in Switzerland, as well as land in Marrakech. The businesswoman said that Juan Carlos I charged for

A spokesperson for the department said that it is impossible to guarantee proper interpersonal separation in these parks and to police the maximum capacities allowed.

PSOE increases its lead over the PP by 13 points It is estimated that the PSOE would poll 32.4% of votes if a general election was held now, according to the latest CIS study, which records a fall of 1.8 points for the Partido Popular drop, down to 19.4%. By Andrew Atkinson The Civil Guard have confiscated 13 Roman amphoras which could date to the 1st century - along with a metal anchor from the 18th century, and limestone plaque, inscribed ESTE, in a raid on a Santa Pola frozen fish products store.

The olive growing amphoras were used to transport oil from the Betic zone of the peninsula and shipped in the Portus Ilicitanus, heading to Rome; along with to transport wine and fish sauces.

The items have been transferred to the Santa Pola Sea Museum, for safekeeping and authentication.

The Civil Guard investigation, in collaboration with the Valencian Community Department of Education, Culture and Sport, got underway after the SEPRONA Civil Guard agents carried out a routine inspection on a Santa Pola business.

The historic items were found in the sea while fishing and are of valued heritage, moreso if confirmed that they are Roman amphoras from the 1st century.

The Civil Guard have instructed proceedings for alleged perpetrators of a crime against the historical heritage and crime of reception; acquisition and possession of objects knowing their doubtful or illegal origin.

LOCAL NEWSBITES Monitoring tool to detect coronavirus in Torrevieja waste water In a joint venture with AGAMED, the Torrevieja City Council, has launched the tool COVID-19 CITY SENTINEL, a wastewater monitoring system that identifies the presence of the SARS-CoV virustwo. The technology allows detection of the coronavirus in wastewater and the calculation of its spread. This innovative tool, has been developed by SUEZ Spain, a business group to which Hidraqua, a company owned by AGAMED, belongs.

The analysis of wastewater will enable technicians to anticipate the appearance of possible new outbreaks in the town.

Horadada cookery club During the state of alarm, the Council organised the "Women's Cooking Club" which took place during the months of May and June, encouraging many people to share their culinary experiences.

It was a time to create rich recipes that focused on desserts from the area, with fruits and vegetables from Pilareña gardens, providing healthy tips and providing an opportunity to share culinary experiences with other people.

Street Cleaning increases trucks to collect pruning The pruning collection service in the coastal area has been reinforced with an octopus truck which has been contracted, for an amount of 49,984.00 euros (VAT included), for one year with the option to extend. The new truck will increase the daily collection service of prunings in high season for the entire Orihuela Costa area now providing a service throughout the day.

People are still asked, however, to notify the department in advance of depositing the waste on public roads. Councillor Aparicio also said that "We also appeal to the public in relation to uncontrolled pruning deposits on our streets from neighbouring municipalities and private companies, so any help in this regard would be very useful in helping us to stop the problem.”

Barrier installed in Rio Segura to stop waste reaching Orihuela The Segura Hydrographic Confederation has installed a barrier across the Segura river which is intended to prevent the passage of waste through the Segura channel towards the centre of Orihuela.

The 'anti-waste' chain barrier is located near the Ociopía shopping centre so that, when residues, both plastic and vegetable, accumulate in the area, they will be removed to prevent them entering the urban part of the riverbed.

This task will be the responsibility of the City Council itself. A ramp has also been adapted to allow the access of heavy vehicles to the facility.

Northern Irish paedophile schoolteacher arrested in Cartagena For a year and a half, he sexually abused a sevenyear-old boy, taking advantage of his status as a private teacher in a school in Northern Ireland

The investigation began in August 2018 when National Police officers received a Location Request from the UK authorities.

Identified only as L. O. agents from the National Police have arrested an Irishman in Cartagena who worked as a private tutor in the region, teaching English, music and typing.

Not aware of the tutor’s whereabouts the request was sent to several European countries in the hope that local police could locate and carry out a positive identification.

Prior to his arrival in Spain, however, for over a year and a half, L.O. allegedly sexually assaulted and abused a seven-year-old boy, taking advantage of his status as a teacher at a primary school in Northern Ireland.

It is also understood that he was convicted of committing 12 other sexual crimes in the 1990’s for which he served 18 months in prison as well as being disqualified from teaching in the United Kingdom.

Eventually, thanks to the information provided National Police agents the individual living in Cartagena. They also discovered that in 2004, the detainee was teaching minors in a school in Cartagena and that he was currently giving private classes in English, music and typing, so he was in contact with children on a daily basis.

The investigators quickly provided all the information to the UK authorities so that they could issue a European Arrest Warrant as quickly as possible in order to avoid any possible repetition of electronic products and accessories from well known brands in the telephone sector.

National police raid on warehouse in Cartagena

Agents obtained information concerning the products and where they came, which verified the distribution were counterfeit.

Body of a 63-year-old woman found dead after five days at her home in Elche The body of a 63-year-old woman who is thought to have died four or five days ago, , has been found this afternoon at a home in calle San Agantángelo in Elche .

Neighbours of the dead woman had raised the alarm after experiencing bad smells coming from the house. Residents at the property also claim that they had not seen their neighbour for several days.

Officers who entered the home with the help of firefighters, found the lifeless body of the woman in the bathroom with no apparent signs of violence.

Five crews from the National Police and two fire vehicles attended the scene. Subsequently, a unit of the Scientific Police and funeral services attended the property.

An ambulance from the Basic Life Service also moved to the house, although was not needed in view of what is thought to be the women’s natural death.

It was found the warehouse had a multitude of counterfeit products from well known phone brands, including wireless helmets, USB cables and mobile phone cases.

The unnamed arrested person, aged 62, was responsible for the company, who was detained for an alleged crime against industrial property.

The detainee, a Spanish national, was released after a statement was given to the police agencies.

San Miguel GS Hacienda Riquelme. July 29th, 2020 Numbers a touch down this week as San Miguel visited Hacienda Riquelme, 26 players turning out (up on last year). Another Nicklaus designed course of which one only remembers the holes when standing on their tee, and with thoughts that perhaps they were last seen in El Valle, La Torre, Mar Menor or one of the other ex-Polaris courses.

The amount of bunkers on all tracks helps confuse the mind, causing for some a desire to scream “Where am I”.

The course was set up quite tough, with most pins well back on the greens, so adding metres as the putting surfaces tend to be large and undulated. It was also the case that greens didn’t hold (no pitchmarks needed repairing), and the thickly bladed grass with which they have

been sown made for some slow and uneven ball trails.

The weather conditions were excellent, and the fairways, although somewhat bare in places, allowed for plenty of roll, so it has to be the case that the greens and bunkers (and horrible clumps of off-fairway grass) explain the poor overall scoring.

The newly opened La Finca course was the venue for Alfies Golf Society's July get together. Twenty nine players assembled in the sunshine to do battle on a course that had clearly undergone a lot of work during the lockdown period.

The honours on the day in the Gold Division went to our Vice Captain and Match Secretary Rachel Lee with a score of 38 points. Runner up in this division was our Handicap Secretary Derek Fleet with 33 pts. The Silver Division winner was Paul Skillett with 38 pts, and second was Alan Sullivan with 35 pts. Best guest went to Andy Miller with 31 pts.

The Captain’s chosen charity for this year is the Association of Parents of Students with Special Educational Needs (Apanee) in Torrevieja and so far this season we have raised 1,175 euro.

Wednesday’s individual Stableford also saw the return of our 2’s competition. There were two today, going to Liz Robertson and Graham Murray.

With a lot of players suffering in the heat our overall winner was Liz Robertson with 38 points followed by Mark Western with 37 and there were no fewer than three players on 36.

McCafferty's Golf Society at Villamartin 28th July It was almost unplayable, not the course, but the heat, but 18 brave (stupid) souls withstood both the heat and humidity to play our latest game at Villamartin. The course was in good condition and the greens,a bit quick, but excellent.

All four NTP's were claimed and the following received a sleeve of Srixon Soft Feels for their efforts; John Saunders, Steve Higgins, Mick Phelan, and new member Johnny Grennan.

Two's Pot: Only one 2 was recorded and it is thought that Johnny Grennan was pleased to have joined for he was the only one with the 2 and, therefore, walked away with the pot of 36€, to much derision from a couple of his 'mates'!

In the Silver Division, it only needed 30 points for the Captain, Ernie Wilson to win the CBNC non-award. One point ahead was Big Keith, Keith Crossan with 31 points to claim the Runner-Up brownie.

A full 7 shots ahead,Mick Phelan comfortably took Silver Division. Normally, his 38 pts would have been more than enough to claim top spot.

Gold, where there were only two notable scores and Blue Smith's 29 points wasn't one of them as it was only good enough for the CBNC. The Runner-up was the very steady Darren Hancock, playing off a 6 handicap with 34 points and only

Now, there is an old saying "After the Lord Mayors show" and this most certainly applied to the Happy Golfer of the day. It was a very closerun affair with two players in the mix, both scoring a miserable 19 points, Moose Burke and Andy Brown, who, if you recall, scored a marvellous 41 points at La Manga last week. Well, this was a certain case of "After the Lord Mayors show", for after the countback system was applied and to much applause and general happiness, and with Moose punching the air in delight as Vice-Captain Andy Brown sheepishly walked up to accept the bottle of wine from his Captain.

Next week, Tuesday the 4th of August we are off to the highly rated and, quite possibly, the best course in this area, La Finca.

The week after, the 11th, we are at La Finca again, this time in the Stroke Play series (Maximum of 5 over par).

Usually this is simple because the ball rests 6” down at the bottom of the hole and is clearly holed and has to be retrieved by the player but the current situation is somewhat different because the flag must remain in the hole and the stop in the hole allows the ball to fall less than the diameter of the golf ball and it is easy for the ball to fall into the hole but bounce ball out again.

This question has been raised in many golfing periodicals over recent months and unfortunately this is not good news for the unlucky golf because if a ball goes in down and then out of the hole it is not considered to be holed and will cost you another shot.

I guess that this may be considered unlucky but I guess in these difficult times we are lucky to be playing golf at all.

Remembering La Marina Bowlers Barry Latham and Jack Chorlton Friday 24th July turned out to be a sad day for La Marina Bowls Club, we were informed of the death of 2 our long standing members, BARRY LATHAM and JACK CHORLTON. Thankfully neither of the deaths was attached to this horrendous virus that is so upsetting.

JACK has been a good staunch member of at least 15 years, indeed when I first joined he was the groundsman. He had been struggling with his health for the last couple of years but this year felt he would be up for it.

JACK you will be sadly missed and all at the club send Margaret your wife our deepest sympathies.

Where JACK was known to the club,

BARRY LATHAM was very well known to the whole Bowling Community.

2004/05, organising the National Championships during that period.

He arrived in Spain, having previously been a member of the well-respected Southam United Bowling Club where he produced the club Newsletter.

BARRY was not just a bowler but an active member at committee levels for club and country and he would always have sound advice for all if asked for it.

BARRY was Club Singles Champion in 1995 and 1997 and regularly represented this county of Warwickshire.

He was also a great Newspaper correspondent for La Marina where his sense of humour was always appreciated by the many bowlers who read his column.

He brought his skills to Spain in the early 00’s where he quickly established himself at the very top of the bowling community.

He was an important member of the Spanish National team, travelling as far as New Zealand to represent his adopted country and he eventually took on the mantle of National Director in
