Province exceeds a million cars THE ECONOMIC RECOVERY and the lack of incentives to scrap old cars has increased the number of cars to in the province of Alicante to record highs. Now exceeding one million cars, the roads are congested more than ever before. Not even in the economic boom, when credit flowed unchecked and construction seemed to have no end, did the province have as many cars registered as it does at this time. According to the latest data from the General Directorate of Traffic, after four uninterrupted years of growth, the Alicante car fleet exceeded one million units last year. At the end of November, 1,002,916 cars were on the road, a milestone that until now had only been achieved by Madrid, with 3.7 million cars; Barcelona, with 2.4 million and Valencia, with 1.2 million. However, the total number of vehicles in circulation in the province, including motorcycles, vans, trucks and coaches, is at 1,466,551, the largest number declared by the DGT on its website, which has been in existence since 2008. Although the increase has been generalised in all categories, it is the car that monopolises the greater part of this growth. Specifically, cars and 4x4’s account for 103,497 of the 122,177 vehicles by which the provincial fleet has increased since 2014. And all this has taken place in a period when absolutely nothing has been done to improve the road network across the province. In fact, in the last five years the only significant improvement has been the Benissa variant of
the N-332 and some minor improvements. You would have thought that, with the acquisition of new vehicles, buyers would scrap their old ones. However, that is precisely what is not happening and what has triggered this significant increase in the number of cars in circulation. "The problem is that there is no help for the scrapping of cars, so most choose to sell their old vehicle on the second hand market to get more out of it," said Raul Morales, the spokesman of the car dealers' association Faconauto. Since the removal of the PIVE Plan in 2016, where the scrapping of old cars was encouraged with a 2000 euro grant, the sector has been demanding some kind of measure to encourage the elimination of older vehicles, but without any success and, according to Morales, until such a measure is reintroduced the number of vehicles on our roads along with congestion and pollution, will continue to grow.

ROAD IMPROVEMENTS GET UNDERWAY AROUND ALICANTE AIRPORT
T
he Ministry of Public Works plans to start improvement works in February to the road access system to AlicanteElche airport, once the expropriation process has been completed transferring ownership of the land that connects the N-338 road with the N-332.
Donation to San Jose Orphanage
The improvements will affect a section about five kilometres long that has been waiting for the project to be approved since 2013. In principle, the works should have started last year, following the approval of a 29 million euro budget but the political instability that led to the fall of the Government of Mariano Rajoy, and the realisation that they did not own the land, paralyzed the work which it is hoped will put an end the traffic jams suffered by the almost 14 million passengers who pass every year through the Alicante-Elche airport. The project consists of the improvement of the 4.75 kilometres of the N-338 with the construction of two lanes in each direction and four links. One to the Alicante Trade Fair Institution and the Vía Parque, another to the N-332, a third to the ring road (A-70) and the fourth to the airport entrance roundabout. Despite the airport handling almost 14 million passengers in 2018 there is still little information regarding a planned railway connection, a project that was approved last year, but which still hasn’t received a budget.
CORVERA OPENING - From Page One
At a cost of about 85 million euros, half of the budget of the original Torrellano variant, the intention of Fomento is to build an underground branch of the current commuter line to the terminal. The airport has been waiting for this infrastructure for 18 years, from the year 2000 when it first exceeded six million passengers per year, a figure at which the EU considers that airports must have a connection with the railway. Ecologists say that they have no environmental objections to the rail project.
The airport starts with a forecast of one million passengers per year over 12 routes.
The Smile Charity group donated 500€ worth of Primark vouchers which we had nominated as one of our charities for the shows performed in 2018. Once arriving at the orphanage we were warmly greeted by Manoli (one of the 4 nuns) and the director, we explained who we were, what we did and handed over the proceeds. However all involved at the orphanage were overjoyed at our generousity, as they gave us a guided tour of the orphanage, including meeting some of the children. The residential care these children (11-17yrs) are given is second to none, in a warm and homely environment, the children are taught and gradually brought back into normal living and society. The Orphanage is solely funded by the Government (public Sector) which is not a lot, these days. Unlike some other privately owned orphanages in our area. The Staff are extremely grateful for any donation of any kind. They work extremely hard for the 24 children in the centre just outside of Orihuela and a small centre for the older children in the city itself .
total. “I hope that things get better” he said. “There is no way that I can survive on such meagre pickings.” “But I was lucky, because some of my colleagues didn’t have a single customer. We have no choice other than to have patience.”
The opening ceremony itself, however, didn’t take place until an hour or so later, following the arrival of King Felipe VI. during which he was accompanied by a whole entourage of local politicians and dignitaries, before officially opening the airport. They included the president of the Autonomous Community, Fernando López Miras, and the Minister of Development José Luis Ábalos, as well as the government delegate, Diego Conesa, and the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta. In total, about 500 guests attended the official opening ceremony, while on the airport fringes, dozens of prison officers and local farmers protested against conditions and the expropriation of their land for which many of them still await payment. The president of Aena, Mauruci Lucena, said that "the start-up of the Murcia Region International Airport improves and strengthens the Aena network, which aims to offer the best infrastructure to travellers and airlines." David O'Brien, the Chief Commercial Officer of Ryanair, said that the company was the first to land in the "newest airport facilities in Spain, our 27th destination in the country, where we expect to transport more than 660,000 passengers over the next 12 months”.
Murcia taxi drivers have established daily shifts of 29 vehicles at the terminal with the rate between Murcia and Corvera set at 29 euros. Murcia taxi drivers are the only ones who can park at the rank. There will also be four bus lines that will connect the airport with Murcia, Cartagena, San Pedro and San Javier as well as the urbanisations located in the Mar Menor and Campo de Cartagena. AFTER THE LORD MAYOR’S SHOW The day after the official opening by King Felipe V1 the situation was rather different. Tuesday’s opening day saw 16 scheduled flights while on Wednesday there were just 6. Indeed there were far more sightseers wandering around the facility than aircraft passengers, many more dogs being exercised by their owners than aircraft, a major concern for the business concessions and the many other people who rely on the footfall and traffic for their living. But despite it being such a quiet day, as I waited for staff to serve me in the only cafeteria, it took over 15 minutes to order a cup of coffee. There were similar staff absences at booths belonging to Jet2.com, Murcia local police, Easyjet and Swissport. Ryanair had one employee on duty, while only the airport information point was well covered. María José, a taxi driver from Murcia, had just one pickup all day, from the airport to Santiago de la Ribera, making just 50 euros in
Corvera project 15 years ago there was little enthusiasm for the new airport but after the development ran into financial difficulties and the Murcia Government was forced to save face by investing over 200 million euro of its own money into the project, there was no going back. The airport simply had to be built, almost at any cost, but even now, following a lavish opening ceremony, and in view of their track record with similar projects, the jury is still out on the legitimacy of the Murcia Government decision. We all remember the fanfare surrounding such ambitious schemes as the Paramount Theme Park, the Marina de Cope between Mazarrón and Águilas, scheduled to be the biggest tourist complex in Europe, and Cartagena’s container port at El Gorguel, all multi million euro projects that have either stalled or been totally abandoned. The administration has a less than an impressive record in dealing with such undertakings. Even the arrival of the AVE high-speed rail network has suffered years of delays. Only now in the case of the Murcia International Airport are we about to start finding out whether the decision was right or simply a very costly mistake.

Al Joel takes ‘Tin Pan Alley’ to RBL in Mil Palmeras
The Orihuela Costa Branch of the RBL met on Thursday evening at Mil Palmeras where, following the general meeting, Local performer Al Joel, himself a former serviceman, entertained the members with a selection of numbers from the great American songbook. Al demonstrated just why he is regarded as one of the most sought after crooners in the area as he covered many of the greats including Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Kenny Rogers. Despite his wonderful stylistic voice Al only sings professionally on a few selected occasions during the year, choosing to use his talents mainly in support of charity events, for which he gives his immense vocal abilities absolutely free. IT is hoped that Al will be back at the RBL as one of a host of popular entertainers performing in their outdoor gala concert in Mil Palmeras on Saturday 1 June.

British Embassy welcomes Spanish website for UK Nationals in Spain
A chess set made
On 14 January, the Spanish government launched a new, dedicated section on the Moncloa website to inform UK and Spanish citizens and businesses on how to prepare for when the UK leaves the EU. The new site is available in Spanish and English, and covers areas including residency, healthcare, voting rights and education. We encourage all UK nationals in Spain to visit the site in order to ensure they are prepared for EU exit. The Spanish government message on the website is clear: UK citizens living in Spain for more than 3 months must ensure they are correctly registered with Extranjería (the Central Foreigners Register), to obtain a registration certificate that will be useful in either a deal or no-deal scenario. In the case of an exit with an agreement, the registration certificate will allow you to exercise your
rights as set out under the Withdrawal Agreement. The website also says that in the event of an exit without an agreement, the registration certificate will allow British citizens to continue to live in Spain and obtain any new documents required by the Spanish immigration system. For further information on residency visit our Living In Guide. British Ambassador Simon Manley said: “The launch of this new web resource is an important moment and underlines the shared desire of both the Spanish and British governments to ensure that citizens’ rights are protected. We welcome its arrival and the accompanying assurances by the Spanish government that UK nationals who have chosen to make their home here will have their rights respected. The UK government has constantly reassured EU citizens and their family members living in the UK that they are welcome to stay even in the event of a ‘no deal’. We welcome the fact that the Spanish government is making the same commitment to UK nationals in Spain. We will continue our discussions with our Spanish colleagues on the rights of UK citizens in Spain in order to ensure that all your concerns are addressed.” The British Embassy and Consular network is continuing its programme of outreach events to prepare UK nationals in Spain for EU exit. To find an event visit gov.uk. If there is not an event near you, we will be holding a live Q&A on Facebook in the coming weeks. Join our Brits in Spain Facebook page for further details. We also recommend signing up for alerts from our Living In Guide to ensure you are getting the latest, accurate information.
TESTIMONIAL “Antonio - From start to finish it was utter professionalism. You kept in touch and submitted the finished product at the time you stated. A good deal of Spanish firms could take a lesson from your customer service approach.” Roger Bates

TOO FAT TO DIE At last! We have finally reached the end of the celebratory season and we can get back to something that approaches normal! By normal, I mean eating the things that we should eat and not what we want to eat. The empty box of chocolates and crisp packets are finally confined to the bin, and it is time to be eating healthy meals once again; or is it?
11
b y Bar rie Mahoney
Despite New Year Resolutions to do better, many of us find that our obsessive natures force us into eating more of what we should avoid, to drink more when we should abstain, and that our expensive financial commitment to the gym often results in a visit to the adjacent bar. At risk of depressing readers even more, how about being faced with the idea that if we are too obese, it may not be possible to be cremated when the time comes? Authorities in Spain’s Valencia region are considering a ban on the cremation of bodies that are too fat, simply because the burning process generates too many toxic emissions. Well, I guess it is a fair point, but was not something that I had previously considered. Many of us will be aware of trying to reduce carbon emissions; for example, in the amount of flying that we may do when going on holiday or when using our cars, but have we seriously considered being too fat when we die? According to experts in the cremation process, people who are too fat, or maybe I should be more politically correct and refer to the ‘morbidly obese’, generate a number of serious technical issues, which includes an excessive amount of toxic emissions. Forget fancy diets and Weight Watchers; surely that fact alone is a very persuasive reason to start losing weight? The regional health authority in Valencia has suggested the new measures as part of new rules that are aimed at reducing air pollution from cremation, and particularly the cremation of large bodies. Other measures include a ban on cremating the bodies of people who had received treatment for cancer that used radioactive needles in the process. In addition, a ban on cremating coffins that contain resins, plastics or other elements that could create highly toxic substances is being considered. So, if your preference is for a coffin that
contains lead or zinc, or if you would like to be cremated with your best jewellery or indeed your mobile phone, just forget it. I find this rule quite depressing, since I do not intend leaving my new phone behind for any reason. Readers will be relieved to know that the draft regulations insist that new crematoria have to be built at least 200 metres from homes, health centres, schools, parks and sports facilities. This is a very sensible idea, since the pungent aroma of a permanent barbecue would almost certainly reduce house prices. Well, that is my contribution to healthy living for the New Year, which I am sure will help us all to follow sensible dietary guidance for the year ahead. If we really do feel unable to ‘fight the flab’ I guess the alternative is always burial at sea, but that has its own issues and is a story for another time. The Japanese macaques that we reported on some weeks ago, living in appalling conditions in Guardamar del Segura, are being moved to the United Kingdom, to the Wales Ape & Monkey Sanctuary rescue centre, close to Merthyr Tydfil in the Brecon Beacons. The organizations that have been caring for the five macaques said that, once again, it has been a private animal welfare organisation that has rescued these abandoned primates, insisting on the need for the creation of CITES Rescue Centres in Spain. Animalia Animal Protection and Great Ape Project reported last November 14th the chaotic situation and abandonment in which the five Japanese macaques were living in Guardamar. These animals lived on a private estate that housed a "private collection" of animals of different species. The macaques were living in tiny cages full of excrement which had accumulated over time; all a source of infection and degrading hygienic con-

ARIES (March 21 - April 19) You're still working hard, little Ram. Don't expect anything to be handed to you on a silver platter. You will earn everything you get and guess what? You also get to keep it. With the Sun in Aquarius and a moon in Aries for a few days this week, take a big bite out of a task that you need to wrestle with but haven't been able to wrap your arms around until now. TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) This may be a slightly emotional week for you, but not in the weepy sense, melancholy is the best word to describe how you feel. Contemplation of things related to home life will be on an upswing. This week make an extra special effort to reach out to those you care about. If there are some family or friends you haven't seen since last year, with Sagittarius in Mars, you might get a call for company. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) You may be chattier than usual this week, but there will be some concern centering on finances. This is a great time to do some digging on how to manage or improve your personal relationship with money.
Monday 21st - Sunday 27th January, 2019
Stay on top of topics related to financial investments, particularly real estate or crypto currencies since you may be in a position to do something with that information in the future. CANCER (June 21 - July 22) Although you tend to hide your true intensity, you are less inclined towards trying to lock down relationship or business deals. Instead, flirty encounters, testing your influence in public and social circles continue to be a theme this week. Financially, things improve for you, and this could be a result of increasing favor with peers and bosses as confidence in you grows. LEO (July 23 - August 22) Your lover side has a chance to finish this week in a strong way. If you're looking for love or simply want to see how it can open doors for you in family and social circles, you won't have to try too hard. This week, the door to your love house unlocks and the door begins opening in different ways well into the middle of the year. This means that your charming self not only makes others feel pretty special, but knowing you're capable of putting a smile on another person's face will give you the warm feels too.
VIRGO (August 23 - September 22) You laid the ground work when closing out 2017, and now...well, things have only been continuing to move in a positive direction. The best is yet to come. Last week, your karmic energy was positive, but now that things are moving into innovative Aquarius season, you get more added benefit in financial planning but also in project management. Not only will you feel the energy increasing under your sails, second wind will come often and consistently throughout the week so that you accomplish much more. LIBRA (September 23 - October 22) Like others signs, finances are a theme, but may involve helping others put their own in order. This could be helping a parent navigate some decisions or it could be showing support to a partner who is feeling a little overwhelmed. Business and pleasure mix a little more this week as well. If you work with colleagues whom you don't always have time to talk about work with, scheduling networking and after work happy hours won't be such a bad idea. SCORPIO (October 23 - Nov 21) After a season of shake ups it's no wonder that you're still sensitive when energy isn't stable. This week, matters that affect friends or relatives could give you a reminder of just how far you've come. Financial planning is a great way for you to continue stead progress as you rebuild from the storm of last year. Be sure to take what you feel like you can handle and make investments wisely especially where you spend your time. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 December 21) You have been busy, and things will continue to zip this week. You might have had more than you fair share of

work since the start of the new year. Finding new ways to get things done may be the only way to get things back into a manageable situation. Perhaps check out a productivity app that helps you to keep track of your time. This is at least one place to progress and avoid wasting it on social media. CAPRICORN (December 22 - Jan 19) Rigid thinking won't get you where you need to go, and you are definitely going places. After the Sun in your sign and followed by a New Moon, the energy is in your favour. You can call the shots in your personal and financial matters, but this will require you to think unconventionally. Trying a new approach even if you already know what will work, may be a worthwhile change for you to do because it makes life easier in the long run. AQUARIUS (January 20 - Feb 18) After a spiritual start, it's little wonder why you are in tune with how to manifest what you want. Things continue to work in your favour but this is a key period to seeing the spiritual translate into the physical. You may be playing a supportive role to friends and family this week helping to demonstrate the spiritual and life lessons you've learned. PISCES (February 19 - March 20) Pisces, spiritual laws will apply to you in an interesting way. Reaping what you sow has never been so difficult this past few months and yet, now things are finally starting to bud. There may be more money flowing into you life at towards the end of the week. This can create a happy problem. Squaring away any financial matters and perhaps investing in health related clubs will be part of the wise investments in yourself that you can make.

Horadada Bowls Club On Monday, in the Discovery Division, the Horadada Falcons were away to San Miguel Dalmations. Not a good day at the office I’m afraid, as the Falcons were well beaten by a better side. In saying that we had 1 rink who only lost by 1 shot. That is more soul destroying than losing by much more. Hard lines to Wayne Jackson, Les Davies and Mick Kirby. The final score was all 12 points going to San Miguel. The shots were 55 for to 120 against. Come on Falcons, keep going. We need to move up that table. On Friday, in the Southern League, the Horadada Royals were away to Quesada Swifts. This was a better result for us but again we came
El Rancho Bowls Club The week started with a derby with the Raiders being at home to the Palominos, the Raiders being in general a more experienced side took the rinks by 4-1 and the overall shots. But both sides enjoyed playing their own club members, though as we know it can affect one’s concentration. Barbara Jones, Marion Haynes and Geoff Jones scored a ‘Hotshot’ and are probably justifiably feeling a little smug, well done! In the afternoon the Mustangs, playing in a lighter breeze and getting increasingly warmer, entertained Quesada Rubies and

had a tight match ending with Quesada taking 3 rinks to the Mustangs’ 2, whilst the mustangs took the overall shots by a small margin and hence drawing the match. Friday found the Mustangs at La Marina playing the Ospreys and struggled on the day to overcome the Ospreys strong team and home advantage, coming away without a point, though putting up a good battle on two of the rinks. But such is life with many more fixtures to come. Meanwhile the Broncos were entertaining Quesada Swans and played a good all round match, gaining a well deserved 9 points, in
taking 3 rinks and one draw, with the overall shots by a good margin. Graham Day, Marion Haynes and Dave Haynes 19-6. Chris Ziepe, Pam Harris and Brian Harris 15-15. Ann C Taylor, Denise Morgan and Keith Longshaw 31-7. Val Ryder, Barbara Jones and Geoff Jones 15-22. Suzette Ziepe, Steve Ziepe and John Ziepe 29-17. The Rangers had a bye this week. Without going into too much details the basic rule changes are: Only 3 minutes to search for a lost ball, play ready golf, no penalty for hitting the flag when on the putting green, repairs of spike marks on greens now permitted, grounding a club in a hazard now permitted, grounding of a club in a bunker now allowed BUT not when playing a shot, drop a ball for 2 shot penalty when out of bounds rather than play three from the tee, no penalty for a double hit of the ball, free and penalty drops now taken from knee height, distance for free and penalty drops remain the same but can be meassured with any club in the bag except the putter and an unplayable lie can be taken in a bunker allowing the ball to be dropped out of the bunker for a 2 shot penalty. Every player should be aware and put into practice these new rules. Have you ever thought why there are so many rules and appendices to rules? The reason is that there is always someone ready to bend and twist the existing rules to to their benefit. Just to highlight this there are a number of short videos on facebook showing tournament professionals practising a deliberate double hit when route to the hole is blocked by a tree. There is one last element of the new rules missing here in that the rules refer to the integrity and trust placed on the golfer.

Frosty start for El Plantio2 GS
For the second Tuesday in a row, a frosty golf course delayed play for over one hour, but, when proceedings started for the 15 members for El Plantio 2's Yellow Ball competition, conditions seemed to be ideal. However, only the winning team took full advantage, finishing a full 18 points ahead of second place and a massive 27 in front of the third. Only these teams returned the Yellow Ball, thereby avoiding a 5 point penalty. Nearest the pins: Hole 1 – Mike Davies, Hole 6 – Helen Beddows. Third place – John Wilby, Barry Walthall, Brian Coupe – 108 points. Second place – Ray Housley, Mike Davies, Chris Linathan - 117 points. First place – Alistair Douglas, Lyn Young, Brian Edwards 135 points. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details.

La Marina GS New Year Trophy We met at the well-prepared RODA course on a freezing cold and windy day to play for the first trophy of the New Year. One member was heard to comment that it was the worst weather he has encountered for golf in Spain. However, despite his comment John Lywood managed to score 32 pts and win the Gold div quite comfortably.

Los Nietos Golf Society Iain Furniss writes Los Nietos Golf Society held their first game of 2019 at Lo Romero and not a cloud in the sky! A special mention should be made about the course and it’s excellent condition. As one of the best courses in the area it certainly lived up to its reputation and exceeded our expectations, from the hospitality received in the Clubhouse to the cooperation of the proshop, mobile refreshments and on course Marshalls. It was pleasure to visit and play one of the premier courses in Murcia. The day was well supported by members and guests, with 36 players out in the field but a particular mention goes to the Lady members and guests, Carol, Skye, Paula & Caroline; for the first time in our history the Ladies made up a very competitive 4 ball and from what we hear, had a great day. We welcome our new members Caroline and Duncan Anderton, Paula and Ross Winwood, Jack Wilson and Paul Brimble ……. Welcome all! Round seven of the Carp-R-Us Winter Series was fished at the Embalse de Beniarres. This venue usually produces very good weights in the warmer weather but this was not the case today. Of the nine anglers that made the long trip only three caught fish. First was Jeremy Fardoe with 2.90kg, second was Alan Smith with 1.25kg and third Roy Buttress with 1.05kg. The club membership year started 1stJanuary, so now is a good time to join. FORMER PRESIDENT REMEMBERED San Miguel Golf Society La Serena 16th Jan, 2019 Colin Arkley Trophy
The time of year for SMGS to fondly remember former Captain and President Colin Arkley by playing for a trophy named in his honour. Whilst many current members will not have known Colin, those that have been with the society long enough recall a kind, generous and much liked personality who always had time for everybody. And in what spectacular fashion the trophy was won this time around. Whilst scoring across the board was excellent, with 30 members getting 30 points or more and 7 bettering their handicap, Spencer Andrews (47) somewhat massacred all opposition, winning by 8 points from 2nd placed Russell Bailey (39). In effect Spencer shot an under par round playing off his handicap of 11, an extremely impressive achievement on a course very much complicated by the presence of water on 16 of its 18 holes. With Spencer clearly taking the main prize and Gold Category, Johan Lager and Mike Jordan respectively won the other two divisions of Silver and Bronze with far more humble 37´s. Winning results, by category and in reverse order: Bronze Category: 5th Dave Bishop (32 on CB), 4th Chris Hamblett (32 on CB), 3rd Alan Hill (33), 2nd Mick Roscoe (35) and 1st Mike Jordan with 37. Silver Category: 5th Ivan Hanak (32 on CB), 4th Peter Girenas (33 on CB), 3rd Kyrre Skarsmoen (33 on CB), 2nd Adrian Roberts (33 on CB) and first Johan Lager with 37. Gold Category: 5th Robin Eastman (37 on CB), 4th Hugh Reilly (37

Our week started with a 6x6x6. The fact that we had to start on the tenth tee confused a number of our (shall I say) more senior members but they got there in the end! Anyway, the top two teams both scored 77 points. On countback, the winners were (much to our surprise) Marleen Billen, Hendrick Oldenziel, Reg Akehurst and yours truly. When the results for Wednesday’s Stableford were (eventually) announced in the correct order it was Terry Cullen who took the top spot with 34 points. With 33 points, separated on countback, Reg Akehurst took silver from Pete Dunn in third place. Just three ‘2’s today, Ken Robertson, Terry Cullen and (big drum roll) me! Did you know? The Stableford points system was invented by Dr Frank Stableford and the first competition using this method of scoring was held at Wallasey Golf Club on the 16th May 1932. We ended the week with four teams competing in a ‘Waltzer 1-2-3’. Winning by a comfortable margin, with 83 points, were Dave Pulling, Tom Hardie, John Shervell and (I’m almost too embarrassed to say) me! Pues, hasta la semana que viene.

Hub Hyenas v Hub Hellraisers The eagerly anticipated Hub derby, aka 'the battle of the sexes', went generally as expected. The ladies won hands down in the style stakes with their blonde bobs and chic outfits versus the mens' grey/no hair and migraine inducing yellow shirts. Unfortunately, the same could not be said of the darts and despite over half the games being fought out over doubles, the men won the match 11:1. Lesley was the victorious Hellraiser beating Lee with a D2 and scoring 117 and 83 along the way. An excellent night helped along by Cheryl's super shepherd’s pie and chocolate eclairs! Survival quickly becoming a mammoth task for Torry CD Torrevieja ......................0 Villajoyosa CF.......................3 MONCHO TOOK CHARGE of Torry for the 2nd time this season, hoping to quickly turn fortunes around as his team slipped into the relegation zone for the first time following last week’s heavy defeat. The 6 point deduction seems to have affected the club dramatically, for not only are they on their 3rd manager of the campaign, but there appears to be no discipline whatsoever, either on or off the field. Last week’s 5 goal hammering at Horadada sent repercussions into this first home match of 2019 against Villajoyosa, following the needless sendings off for Micro and captain Guido, meaning that both are serving unnecessary suspensions. Fans were
told that games at Nelson Mandela Stadium would be until the end of the year at the latest, but once again it hosted yet another match, when just across the road, Vicente Garcia Stadium was allowed to slip further into a state of disrepair.
potency up front. Caretaker manager Moncho drafted in six players from his former youth team charges to make up the numbers, with Manu Garrido named in the starting line up while Moi, Armando, Reno, Nano and Aaron all warmed up the bench.
Back in early September, Villajoyosa succumbed to a 0-2 home defeat to a well organised Torry side, since then, however, todays visitors are only 4 points off the promotion spots, whilst their hosts seem to be moving from crisis to crisis.
Despite the dominance of the visitors Torry did have a good opportunity to open the scoring through Paquito but with the interval approaching it was Ivan who gave La Vila a deserved half time lead when he was first to react to a ball that came back off the Torry post from an Antonio free kick.
The game itself was little more than men versus boys with Villajoyosa completely dominating their opponents, almost from the opening whistle. It might have been slightly different, however, had Keeper Dani been dismissed when, as the last defender, he upended Torry forward Paquito when through on goal on the half hour mark, but referee Manresa drew only a yellow, to a sigh of relief from the 26 year old recent signing from Javea. The absence of Micro and Guido, both suspended, and Fran Caballero, was also making a difference to the home side and with regular striker Omar also missing neither was there any real
A penalty ten minutes into the second period doubled Villajoyosa’s lead after Tomi was penalised for an off the ball incident. Beltran sent debutante Eneko the wrong way to effectively seal the points for the visitors. However the home side did make it difficult for their opponents with Manu thwarted on the hour mark following a spectacular save from Dani.
back of the Torry net to make the final scoreline 0-3.
A speculative effort from his own half saw Manu hit La Vila post, on 85 minutes with the keeper finally beaten, but when Obeda spotted Eneko off his line on the stroke of half time, no such bad luck for the visitors as the ball hit the
With Benidorm picking up a point at Callosa, Torry drop a further place in the table to second from bottom. With two defeats and 8 goals conceded in his two games in charge, caretaker manager Moncho now faces a mammoth task to
keep them in Preferente unless he starts picking up points very soon, starting, we would hope with something from next Sunday morning’s trip to mid table Redovan for an 11.30am kick off. However do check the club website if you plan on making the trip. www.clubdeportivotorrevieja.com
Cleopatra dominates Costa Blanca Petanca Final a quest to stop the rot.
Monte President dismisses terrace relegation fears ALARM bells are ringing on the terraces at CD Montesinos following a topsy turvy season in the Valencia 1st Regional Group 8 that sees the Los Montesinos football team in the lower echelons of the table. Despite relegation concerns amongst the fans President Felipe Parades exclusively spoke to me. FELIPE Parades sent a message to the worried CD Montesinos supporters in the wake of relegation fears at the club: I am confident we will stay up. "Recent performances have been disappointing - but that's football," Felipe told me. After a shock home defeat against bottom club CD Altet last week unrest amongst spectators has increased, underlined by the team sitting fifth bottom, going into this weekend's game against Monovar CD.
"Ruben is working well - although the results are not going our way," rued Felipe. "He has been appointed interim manager until the end of the season - then we will look at the situation," said Felipe.
CD Montesinos interim manager Ruben Saez. "I am confident the players will get better in the second half of the season. The key is to keep working hard," said Felipe. Parades has brought in four new players during the last month - something he promised - after the sacking of coach Carlos Perez in November.
CD Montesinos have scored a paltry 18 goals from 16 games, with a meagre 15 points going into the weekend, conceding 24, that has left them tethering in a relegation threatened pack of five clubs, that includes San Fulgencio, Betis Florida, Monforte and CD Altet. Defeats against league leaders Racing San Miguel, CD Murada and CD Altet in recent fixtures has left Monte just out of the relegation spots. "There are 42 points to play for. New players have arrived at the club and hopefully they will bring something to the team," said Felipe.
In fairness Felipe acted on the back of fans' vociferous bellows against Perez after a poor run of results.
Montesinos host Bahia Santa Pola on January 27, followed by games against promotion hopefuls AC Torrellano, Sporting San Fulgencio, Monforte CF and Atletico Catral in February.
Interim manager Ruben Saez was given the coach's position, a prodigy at the Los Montesinos, Alicante based club, in
Asked if he fears the fans' relegation talk, Felipe said: "Relegation? No - I am confident we will stay up."
The 2019 Cabo Roig Petanca Cup took place on Friday morning, a competition between four teams of predominantly expats, Cleopatra, Sphinx, Nefertiti and Tutankhamun and played for on La Caleta on an annual basis. Very much a social occasion, players from the host nation Spain, plus Norway, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Scotland, enjoyed
a morning of fun and sport, accompanied by nibbles and the occasional glass of cava with Teams Cleopatra and Nefertiti meeting in the final. But it was the team named in honour of the ‘Queen of the Nile’ that eventually came out on top with Klaus, Brian, Linda and Monika taking the spoils after a very close disputed contest.
