ÁLVAREZ APPR O A CHES 3 M ONTHS IN OFFICE
Following on from our interview with the new Councillor for International Residents and Beaches recently, the Leader called into the Orihuela Costa office of Sofía Álvarez, late last week as she approaches
her first 3 months in office. The main aim of the visit was to discuss the progress that the councillor, an Orihuela Costa resident herself, feels that she has made, although as we were welcomed into her comfortable office the question was rather pre empted. Continued on Page 2

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 “I hope you can already see some of the improvements we are making on the coast,” she said. “We have far more cleaners out than has previously been the case and everyone should now be able to see that the areas are gradually becoming cleaner. There is still a long way to go but I am reasonably satisfied with the progress we have made.” Only a day earlier the councillor had finally put together a 30 strong team of volunteer wardens, all of whom are international residents, and each of which is responsible for reporting on problems and activities on a small part of the Orihuela Costa. “We all met together for the first time on Wednesday” said Ms Álvarez, “there was plenty to discuss, and everybody seemed happy with the role that they will each now fulfil”. “They are my eyes and ears across the area and they will each report any problem they might find direct to my office. This will allow the town hall to have far more information and to take any necessary action much earlier than has previously been the case.” One aspect they will monitor will be the illegal dumping of ‘green waste’ for which area timetables are to be published in the coming weeks. “The schedules will be clearly displayed around the different areas along with signs notifying residents of the penalties should they fail to comply,
Monday, 7th September, 2015 BE WARNED!. The signs are soon to be posted around the area
which could include a 1500 euro fine.” The councillor was quite clear in her intention to sanction offenders. Álvarez, who employs a team of 12 municipal workers, continued to speak about the cleanliness of the Orihuela Costa saying that much of the team’s efforts currently centre, not surprisingly, on the beaches and their cleanliness, but toward the end of September, as soon as the holiday period begins to wind down, these 12 workers will be used to supplement the many other cleaning and maintenance requirements around the neighbourhood.
They will be employed cleaning and repairing the pavements and the parks as well as pruning the many palm trees that have been neglected for far too long. One area of particular concern discussed was the lack of a pedestrian walkway or street lighting between La Regia and Lomas De Cabo Roig which would now appear to be in hand. The councillor was quite clear to dispel any rumours of EU money being received by the Ayuntamiento but what she did say was that a footpath, a pedestrian bridge across the AP7 Motorway, and street

lighting, will all be put in place by the contractor who is currently building on Lomas de Cabo Roig. The improvements were agreed as part of his receiving planning permission to construct on the site and will be completed within a period of 12-15 months. Other work which local residents might see restarted, rather sooner than expected, could be the Emergency Centre situated in La Zenia. The centre is to accommodate offices for the National and Local Police as well as the Guardia Civil and the Ambulance Services but building work was abandoned on the site some years ago when the developer ran into difficulties. However, Álvarez announced that she will be meeting with Provincial Government Planners and Financiers in late September where the regeneration of the centre will be discussed. One appeal that the councillor did ask the Leader to make was for volunteers who might wish to join in a ‘rubbish collection walk” which will be taking place across the area on 21 October. “I have the coordinators and some volunteers but I still need many more” she said. “Anyone joining the walk will be rewarded with a big party on the Mercadona car park when it is over.” Before that, however, there will also be a “Cultural Walking Tour” around the city of Orihuela specifically for the residents of the Orihuela Costa.

“We have a wonderful city steeped in many hundreds of years of history, which I would like to create a better understanding of by coastal residents. The walk might go some small way toward doing that” she said. It will take place on 12 September from 8-10pm and transport will be provided. More information by email at: residentes@orihuela.es or by calling into the Tourist Office in the Orihuela Costa Town Hall. The councillor confirmed that she is currently working hard on the new budget for the Orihuela Costa which she is convinced will be much improved. “It will specifically include investment for parks and gardens which we hope to start moving on between December and January.” Of course it is still early days for the new government team and although we have seen a greater presence of cleaners during the summer months, and some cleaner streets, we are not aware of whether they were put in place because of the influx of holidaymakers or as a result of the unacceptable level that cleanliness on the Costa had fallen to. But with residents now far more aware of the situation on the coast, the distance that we have fallen behind the city in terms of any development and the investment that is so badly needed, you can rest assured that we will all be watching carefully.

Callosa Council criticises work on AVE Work on the southern entrance to the AVE tunnel crossing the Sierra de Callosa
The town’s three party tripartite council has complained that the works currently being carried out on the AVE high speed train line between San Isidro and Orihuela have directly harmed the National Park, Paraje de la Cueva Ahumada, a protected green site of natural beauty. It says that the work of removing land around the sierra has led to the disappearance of many species of ground nesting birds in the area and even the botanical garden which was re-landscaped just a year ago has been covered by a blanket of dust. A government spokesman said that the work has already caused severe damage, in particular amongst the protected flora and fauna which traditionally accommodated many species of ground nesting birds, especially in the vicinity of the cave. And neither has there been any let up in the work during the summer where a large cloud of dust has covered all access to public space. The constant labours have also had a harmful effect on hikers and walkers that regularly pass through the many country tracks. “The works also generate a great deal of noise, ground movement and even some tremors, which make the birds abandon their nesting areas ," said the area’s councillor Ismael Ballester. The previous government also complained regular-
ly, particularly about the clouds of dust, which, despite the large quantities of water poured on the ground, fail to prevent it from rising up into the air. At this particular part of the site there are hundreds of dump trucks which come and go all day with material from the inside of the mountains. The area where the vehicles join the CV-900, the road to the nearby town of Redovan, is particularly dangerous, as the trucks are continually depositing a great deal of rubble and dirt The tripartite government has now insisted that it has a meeting with officials from the Ministry of Development where they can address the various issues, including the replacement of public spaces and rural tracks and roads in the area of the Cueva Ahumada affected or rural roads, many of which have been badly mangled by the passage of the heavy vehicles. In addition to the disappearance of many important species of birds the council say there has also been a deterioration in areas that were regularly used by members of the public as recently as twelve months ago, in particular the botanical garden which hosted many visitors and where native species of flora and fauna were planted for the enjoyment of future walking tours of the Cueva Ahumada.

Campoverde Canine Club - Class Awards Torrevieja’s ‘Pochi’, 2nd from the right, celebrates Gold with his team mates
Council invest 72,000 euro in R a f a l Fo o t b a l l Stadium Over 72,000 euros has been spent during the summer months on improvements to the ground and the facilities at Rafal Football club. The work includes the replacement of the concrete seating with 400 new plastic seats as well as a cover for the main stand and an electronic scoreboard. It is work that has been required for many years and now we have been able to carry it out," said the delighted Councillor for Works,
Alberto Hidalgo Grin FC Rafal were promoted to the Preferente Division at the end of last season so it is hoped that the improved facilities, together with a higher standard of football, will draw many more supporters to the club as they attempt to build on their previous success. The official presentation of the new sports stadium took place last weekend when the club entertained Callosa Deportiva in a friendly.

stablished in Spain in July 2000 the Campoverde Canine Club is still going strong teaching dogs (and their owners) in all aspects of obedience, with plenty of fun along the way. The new classes will begin very shortly. PLEASE CONTACT THE EMAIL ADDRESS ABOVE . The final examinations have taken place at the training ground of the C.C.C. in Campoverde. The results from the Basic Class showed that the winner was Colin Chatfield and his
little dog Millie. Well done to you both for scoring 108.5 marks out of 110. Patience and perseverance works wonders. The Intermediate Class was won by Angus MacTavish and his dog Magnus. The score of 120.1 shows the effort put in by Angus and his best friend. The Advanced Class was a big disappointment showing no passes in this harder and demanding group. The Agility Class covering a total of ten different obstacles was mastered by “Rebel”, handled by his more than competent owner,
Heather Powell. Sometimes it appears that “Rebel” finds that the jumps are all too easy. All jumps were marked on ability and control and to achieve 95 out of 100 marks shows the effort Heather has consistently put into the training exercises. New classes will start very soon. ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
Boozing Whilst Cruising Judging from some of the expat correspondence that I have read recently, many of the more sober Brits are not too impressed to discover that many of their countrymen are so badly behaved in Spain that British policemen were sent over this season to several resorts to assist the Spanish police. Hailed as a “success” in Mallorca and Ibiza, Benidorm now wants to get in on the act and have British bobbies on the beat there too. It seems that we are now entering a new phase in international relations since we cannot trust Brits to behave well abroad. British officers will now be sent to traditional party hotspots that are popular with young Brits. Apparently, “Seeing a British bobby patrolling the streets or on the beach helps tourists to feel at home,” according to a Valencian regional spokesperson. That may be true, but how many Brits see a bobby patrolling the streets anywhere in the UK nowadays? It’s years since this particular species were last seen patrolling the streets; after all, the weather is just too appalling to go outside. Maybe a holiday to a popular Spanish resort just to see a British bobby in action will become the latest tourist attraction? Do British tourists really need to “feel at home” when on holiday? Surely, the point of going to another country for a holiday is to get away from home? Surely, British tourists are going to try real Spanish food, sample the superb wines, enjoy delicious tapas, traditional music and dancing? Sadly not, since although the TV comedy ‘Benidorm’ is meant to be a parody of Brits abroad, it is so funny, because it is actually true. The last thing a Brit on holiday in Benidorm, Mallorca or
Ibiza wants is to be in a foreign country. Paella? You must be joking; its fish and chips that will really do the trick. A nice Spanish Rioja? Forget it; just hand over a pint of the local (preferably dirt cheap) brew. Tapas? Well, that’s not proper food, is it? As for traditional music and dancing, no way! Lets just get bladdered and head off to the local disco pub.
It seems that we are now entering a new phase in international relations since we cannot trust Brits to behave well abroad.
Sadly, British police abroad will have no powers to arrest, but will serve “to remind British tourists the importance of observing local laws and customs,” according to the rather pompous declaration from the British Embassy. Possibly this explains why two of the British officers sent under the trial scheme this summer were widely criticised in social media for observing local customs a little too much. Swimming with the tourists, taking selfies with holidaymakers, and with one officer reportedly participating in a boozy night out was maybe not the right way to start a new assignment as an ambassador and good example to fellow Brits. One interesting aspect of the Benidorm scheme will be a system of exchange with officers from Spain’s National Police going to areas of Britain where there are more Spanish nationals. What an excellent idea, which should mean one or two policemen on the beat. I have every respect for Spain’s National Police, who are mostly very professional and well trained, but they are not to be argued with. It will be most interesting to see how they deal with offenders in the more notorious parts of Britain. Meanwhile, readers will be pleased to hear that the latest crime wave to hit the streets of Benidorm, that of illegally riding mobility scooters, is going to be tackled more seriously in future. After all, being run down by a perfectly healthy, but inebriated teenager riding a mobility scooter may not the best way to start a holiday in the sun. In true ‘Benidorm Madge’ fashion, ‘boozing whilst cruising’ on such a vehicle will be frowned upon and ‘booze filled’ races will be crossing the line. In seems that the town has more than its fair share of disabled
Brits visiting with over 500 mobility scooters on the resort’s streets every day. These ‘booze bikes’ will now be banned for people under the age of 55 with no physical disability, with fines of 36 to 65 euros for those who ignore the ban. Madge certainly has a lot to answer for. Three thousand swimmers helped by Torrevieja Red Cross Figures released by the Red Cross last week, the organisation that provides the lifeguard service to all of Torrevieja’s beaches, say that their attendants have provided assistance to over 300 swimmers during the summer. The mayor, José Manuel Dolon, celebrated the figures during a visit to Los Locos in which he was accompanied by the Councillor for Beaches, Javier Manzanares. He said that the city were privileged to have an international organisation such as the Red Cross carrying out this important service which, during his tenure of office, he would not wish to be privatised. Dolon said that "the Red Cross, which is the world's largest humanitarian organization, will continue monitoring Torrevieja’s beaches." However, he also added that despite the excellent service they provided, “everything can still be improved." The summer assessment was carried out by the
president of the local branch of the Red Cross, Bibiano Jose Vera, in conjunction with Councillor Ferrández, They both said that activity during the summer had been "quiet", but that the assistance provided by the Red Cross to 3,000 people, of which 260 were physical rescues from the sea, had been immensely important. These figures are lower than in other years "because people are becoming more aware of the rules, the methods of prevention, signs, warning flags and of course the state of the sea." As for the deaths from drowning during the summer period, Vera said there had been just one on the beach of El Cura and and another at La Mata. However, following the announcement two further deaths occurred last week, a woman of 75 years on the beach at La Mata, and a man aged 78 years who was drowned on Monday while enjoying a swim at the beach Acequión.
Pylon on a green area in Los Montesinos.
Complaints by Defensa de la Huerta over Power Lines on Green Areas The anti-corruption platform Defensa de la Huerta has once again highlighted the presence of electrical pylons and power lines on sites that are designated as green areas. Last Tuesday the Association Secretary, Moses Cruz, issued a statement which focussed on a playground in the urbanization of Lo Crispin in Algorfa which is crossed by electric power lines but he says that this is not the only case in Vega Baja, there are many more. Cruz claimed that such situations also exists in Los Montesinos where Defensa de
la Huerta has identified another on el Parque Comunidad Valenciana located in la urbanización La Herrada. He says there are two pylons where the electricity cables cross facilities that are used for physical exercise and as a children’s playground. In Ciudad Quesada in Rojales Cruz said that his organisation were concerned about green areas and swings where
a pylon in a public park is not even fenced. He said that many abandoned construction sites, which were in development at the height of the construction boom, also have pylons and electric cables in place and that many of them, such as Albatera Golf, built in 2003 which included the construction of 1,500 villas and a golf course in the mountains, has been left in a dangerous state.

Spain and UK in accord at La Moncloa In a joint appearance at La Moncloa Palace on Friday the Prime Ministers of Spain and the United Kingdom, Mariano Rajoy and David Cameron, seemed to be very much in harmony in everything they said, with the main topics of discussion being EU Membership, the Migrant crisis and the Economic recovery. Both agreed that the granting of asylum is a moral duty with Cameron emphasising that the current situation is the biggest challenge facing countries across Europe today, with more than 220,000 people detected crossing the Mediterranean to Europe in the first 6 months of this year. He said that Britain has a moral responsibility to help these refugees as the country has done throughout it’s history. When asked about the provision of additional financial aid for the refugees Cameron said: "Today I can announce that we will provide a further £100 million, taking our total contribution to over £1 billion pounds. That is the UK's largest ever response to a humanitarian crisis," Cameron said. "£60 million of this additional funding will go to help Syrians still in Syria. The rest will go to neighboring countries, to Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon, where Syrian refugees now account for one quarter of the population." Cameron also won Spain's support for his campaign
for European Union reforms before a British referendum on membership, with his counterpart saying that a British EU exit would be "unthinkable". Cameron said that he wants Britain to remain in a reformed EU and is confident he can get changes such as tighter restrictions on migrants' access to welfare - that would allow him to recommend a 'yes' vote in the referendum, which he has promised by the end of 2017. In principle, Rajoy said that Spain would "do everything in its power for things to go well" in the renegotiations, after "very positive" talks with his fellow conservative leader. When the joint news conference turned to economic matters Cameron and Rajoy agreed that both countries are starting to see the benefits of those difficult decisions made 2 or 3 years ago. In the UK a job-led recovery has created more than a 1,000 jobs a day while Spain is set to grow by more than 3% this year – the fastest of any major economy in the Eurozone – and is now registering record-high job creation. Cameron concluded “We both want to finish the job, driving economic growth that will bring financial security and peace of mind for our hard-working people. And we want to use our valuable trading relationship – now worth over £45 billion every year - to help our businesses succeed.”
Very much in harmony, the two PM’s strolling through La Moncloa Gardens on Friday

Order Books Open for VW’s new Family Touran Volkswagen has announced prices and specifications and opened the order books for the all-new Touran. Redesigned from the ground up and built on Volkswagen’s advanced MQB platform, the new Touran – priced from £22,240 – delivers a sharper, sleeker look, dramatically reduced running costs and a host of new innovations to make life on board safer and easier for everyone. First shown at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the new Touran is 130mm longer than the model it replaces. Much of this is in the wheelbase, which, at 2,791mm, is 113mm longer than the previous model – further increasing usable interior space. All models are equipped with a seven-seat layout that features a new fold-flat system. The seats in the second and third rows, plus the front passenger seat backrest (from SE trim up) can be folded in a matter of seconds, creating a level continuous floor for easy loading. With the second and third row seats folded, the Touran has a cargo capacity of 1,857 litres and has the largest luggage compartment in its class. 47 storage compartments also ensure that life’s essentials gadgets can be carried safety and securely.
The new Touran launches with five engines (two petrol and three diesel) that are up to 19 per cent more efficient than the units they replace. All are Euro6 compliant and have power outputs ranging from 110 to 190 PS. The petrol line-up consists of a 1.2-litre 110 PS TSI with a six-speed manual gearbox and a 1.4-litre 150 PS that is offered with a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG gearbox. With its highest ever equipment count, the new Touran offers buyers the ultimate in family transportation. Highlights on the entry-level S include automatic post-collision braking and pre-crash systems, seven airbags, 6.5-inch Composition Media system with DAB and Bluetooth, air conditioning, roof rails and seven seats. Connectivity is also taken to a new level with numerous features that allow owners to take advantage of real-time information delivered straight to the infotainment display. These include Car-Net ‘Guide and Inform’ and Car-Net ‘App-Connect’ that seamlessly integrates CarPlay (Apple) and Android Auto (Google) and MirrorLink.

Caring for the Vision of the smallest members of the family being able to see clearly can be confusing in a busy classroom. Poor eyesight can cause learning and behavioural problems, which might be blamed on other things. This is especially true for young children, who may find it difficult to explain the difficulties they are having with their eyesight. They may not even be aware they have a problem at all. And of course, the sooner vision problems are detected, the better the outcome. Conditions such as squint and amblyopia (‘lazy eye’) can be treated more effectively if they are picked up early and referred to a Specialist. And that could make a huge difference to your child.”
S
tudies show that at least 20% of children have unidentified visual problems, which is why ophthalmologists recommend regular eye tests for children from an early age until 18. Global optical group Specsavers Opticas are advising that before the school year begins, all children should have an eye test to ensure that any problems are identified and rectified before they start to affect their lives. This is crucial as in the early stages of learning more than 80% of the learning process relies on vision. “Most very young children have their eyesight assessed as part of their routine developmental checks. While these are very important, it is recommended to have a thorough, complete eye test by a qualified optician. So we recommend that your child should have their first eye test at an early age.” explains Francisco Manuel Jurado, Director of Specsavers Opticas in Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja. “Testing before your son or daughter goes into full-time education means that any problems they may have are identified early, setting them up for a happy and fulfilling school life. That’s because not
As part of their commitment to children’s eye sight, Specsavers Opticas in Torrevieja and Guardamar del Segura have been supporting Fundación Arcos del Castillo for over a year, by providing free eye tests and glasses for children in their care. To date they have been able to provide many free eye tests for children from the charity’s centres in Elche and Murcia, and supplied over 50 pairs of free glasses. The charity explains; "This help is crucial for the young people we help in our centres, as the majority come from families who are unable to afford glasses, and each year the number of visual problems amongst these vulnerable children is increasing." Francisco adds “Specsavers is a company which is concerned about providing support for our communities by improving their eye health and to do this we believe it’s important to collaborate with non-profit organizations such as this and take notice of what’s happening in our communities. We should all be aware of the amazing work that can be done by working together and committing our skills and resources to a good cause.” Specsavers support the Fundación Arcos del Castillo

Child Accident Seminar at the Music Palace The Music Palace hosted an interesting presentation last week on the subject of accident prevention and first aid for infants and children by pediatric nurse Lola Celdrán Ballester. It was organized by the support group for breastfeeding of Torrevieja, Lactatorre. Sra Ballester detailed the latest safety recommendations aimed at preventing home accidents, such as falls, burns, cuts and grazes, animal bites, choking or drowning. She said that effective prevention drastically reduces the number of accidents. In addition, she also explained in detail the main lines of action if the accident occurs finally, with special emphasis on cardiopulmonary resuscitation in infants and children. The talk, which included active participation by parents and their children, ended with a section dedicated to road safety, where the latest recommendations of the Directorate General of Traffic aimed at children travelling in cars generated many questions from the audience. Toward the end of the talk, a children's play area with toys and activities, including crafts and face painting, was made available to everyone attending the seminar. The Lactatorre association is made up of volunteer mothers. The group meets every Friday at 1800 hrs in the cultural centre Virgen del Carmen. Those seeking more information should contact Lactatorre on 645 63 24 26, or by email at lactatorre@gmail.com, www.facebook.com/lactatorre Facebook page or the website http: //lactatorre.wordpress. com

8th Madrid ‘Adapted’ Open Golf Championship El Encino Golf Hotel will host the Madrid ‘Adapted’ Open Golf Championship on 19 and 20 September, which this year celebrates its eighth anniversary. The tournament will be sponsored by John Deere with the collaboration of the Coca-Cola Foundation Mahou-San Miguel, Renault Retail Group, Fresh Shop and Lenovo. The event will be held over 36 holes and will be divided into three categories: - Open: maximum handicap 14.4, Scratch Medal Play. - Category 2: handicaps between 14.5 and 24.4, Medal Play Handicap. - Category 3: handicaps from 24.5, Stableford. The Madrid Golf Federation established the ‘Adapted’ Golf Committee in 2005, although the first Open tournament was not held until three years later. Initially it focused on attracting players with intellectual disabilities having their integration into the sport as the main objective. It gradually included disabled players until now when any golfer with any sort of disability is welcomed. Currently, the Madrid region sponsors seven schools for students with intellectual disabilities and three for the disabled, where there are 120 players that take part. 52 players took part in the seventh edition of Open, the tournament's most successful national tournament, a figure that it expects to exceed this year. And the sport is now represented overseas as last July, Alberto Nunez, Eduardo Vegas, Felipe Herranz and Jose Martinez traveled to Scotland to compete in the World Golf Championship Adapted pairs.

Phipps and Percival ease to Las Ramblas two-ball win BY Mike Chapman Our Monday team game was a two ball better ball. It was a close run competition with some excellent scoring. 39 was a popular number but 43, 44 and 45 were the top scores. In 3rd slot on 43 was Lindsay Forbes and Rod Doel. Second berth was taken by Geoff Biggerstaff and Tom Hardie with 44 points but the winners on the day were the "2 Ronnies" - Ron Percival and Ron Phipps - who came in with an excellent 45 points. On Wednesday we played our weekly Stableford competition and although the temperature had dipped a lit-
tle humidity was still high making it tough going. There were still only enough players to have one category but numbers should be returning to more normal levels next week. It was close at the top with a count back being required to settle first and second both with 36 pts and third and fourth both with 35 pts. The result was as follows: 1st Brian Townend 36 pts (c/b) 2nd Bryan Neal 36 pts 3rd Barry Holtham 35 pts (c/b) 4th Rod Doel 35 pts 2's Club: Olga and Alan Douglas, Peter Dunn Our Friday game was a 6x6x6 and again it was necessary for the winners to be decided by means of a back
9 count back. The winners with 85 pts were Geoff Biggerstaff, Tom Hardie, John Collins and 'Albert' who edged out second placed team Lindsay Forbes, Alan Douglas, Marleen Billen and Rachel Leckey. Finally the handicap secretary would like remind all members that "If the handicap committee considers a player's exact handicap is too high and does not reflect his/her current playing ability, the committee MUST reduce the exact handicap to a figure it considers appropriate. this reduction shall not be less than one whole stroke". The annual handicap review will take place in October.
IT’S HAPPY DAYS IN BENIDORM By Lubbertus This week, the society where scheduled for some well deserved R & R in Benidorm, but for a variety of reasons this could not take place, so instead they descended once more on Campoamor Golf course, to play for the Marinasol Trophy. Campoamor Golf course seems to bring out the best in the members of the society; their visit there in April bought some impressive results, likewise their last visit there two weeks ago when they played for the Presidents Cup. And this visit did the same. Perhaps it’s just the ideal golf course that draws out the best in the players, who knows, but the society played some remarkable golf again with impressive results. As two weeks ago, it is good to see some new names appearing on the score card, along with the old stalwarts. Kevin Wenn won the Marinasol Trophy on the day, but only on countback with newcomer Graham Davies when both finished on 39 points. The Butterball winners were Kevin Wenn, again, with another newcomer Graham Riley with 46 points. Nearest the pin went to another newcomer, Roddy Bruce at hole 4; hole 6 went to Dave Naylor; holes 10 and 17 going to Dave Wright, with another newcomer, Martin Lowe, being nearest the pin at hole 15. The “2’s” competition went to Dave Wright, from his nearest the pins at holes 10 and 17, together with another newcomer, Graham Riley. The society’s next competition will be on 15th September at the Font De Lop Golf course. Because of the distance involved, if you need transport please speak to Steve or any member of staff at the Marinasol Restaurant at Cabo Roig who will gladly assist you. If you really want to see a great golf society in action, or just want to find out more, why not pop along to the Marinasol Restaurant and talk to Steve or any member of staff there, they would be more than happy to talk to you.

Viking raid as TMGS divert to La Marquesa This was supposed to be our monthly visit to Campoamor, however we were informed on Monday that Campoamor would be undertaking some serious maintenance on the greens so an alternative venue was found by our Secretary which turned out to be La Marquesa. It must be said that although the greens at La Marquesa had also suffered from the long hot summer this was reflected in the low green fee that we paid. Many thanks to Pascual and Antonio for their help at such short notice. The forecast was for thunderstorms and rain but as frequently happens in this area we had nothing but humidity. Normally we can expect a few phones calls asking for directions but it appears that after a few visits our members can remember the way to the course and everyone turned up BEFORE time, the committee thank you for that as it does help with the smooth running of the day. The scoring was expectedly a little on the low side, with the high humidity and very tricky greens playing their part, that is except for our new Swedish member who seemed to be able to sink putts from everywhere. Viking and Ships Captain, Ole Rong left his long ship tied up at an
oil platform in the North Sea and invaded the Costa Blanca with a few shipmates in the guise of member Kjell Aasebo and family member H. Rong and “Fredrik”. On Ole’s last raid (a month ago) he cleaned up taking home a number for prizes, well today he came up against an arch enemy in the guise of new “Swedish” member Lasse Hagstrom, it seems that the embers of the conflict of between the two countries of a couple of hundred years ago are still smouldering, not to be out done Irishman Chris Gray, last week’s winner also figured in the frame. The results for the Gold category were as follows; 1st place Lasses Hagstrom 35 pts. 2nd place Ole Rong and 3rd place Chris Gray. While this was going on in the Gold category the Brits made a strong showing in the Silver category with Midlanders John Hillier 31 pts. and Alan Rickers 33 pts. taking 3rd and 2nd places respectfully that left Yorkshire man Mick Kennedy to take top spot with 34 pts. in the “2’s” pot this week there were just 2 winners and yes you could have bet on who they were, Ole Rong and Lasse Hagstrom. Rember “Fredrik” yes he could turn out to be another Viking raider because he took top spot in the visi-
Tommy Taylor get’s his ‘Va Va Voom’ with Quesada Last Wednesday the Society travelled inland from Elche to play the “Good Value for Money” course Alenda. The course was generally in decent condition with the greens being a little on the slow side. Again the weather forecast leading up to the day were not too promising with rain expected but it never materialised with conditions being good with sunshine and a slight breeze. The competition was a “chosen” pairs with players choosing their partner and the score determined by totalling the best 9 scores on each partners scorecard. The results were quite close with some of the more favoured pairings surprisingly not ending up on the podium. The winners on the day with 45 points was Tom Taylor ( not the ex-West Ham player) and “Rock & Roller” Bert Morl. In second place with 44 points was the Little & Large partnership of Gordon McGregor and Mick Rowan who was absolutely chuffed on making his his podium finish and getting among the prizes. In 3rd place with 42 points was the husband
& wife partnership of young Trevor Hobbs and Annie “ throw your clubs” Hobbs who pipped the Welsh husband & wife partnership of Mike & Glenys Thomas on C/B. “Nearest the Pin” winners were John Dunnion, Gordon McGregor, Brian Airey and Tom Taylor. Tom had an excellent day as he also had a 2 on one of the par 3´s and went home with an extra 50€ in his pocket. Well done Tom. After the game, the golfers returned to the Quesada Country Club for the presentations and a well earned drink or two and a hot and cold buffet kindly laid on by mine hosts. There is a members meeting at the Quesada Country Club on Tuesday 8 September at 11.00 am. The next game is an Individual Stableford competition at Mar Menor on Wednesday 16 September. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact Les Pancott on 966 71 6723.

La Finca (Algorfa) played host to the ever expanding Hub Society, in their eleventh Grand Prix event of the season. The 11.00 am start must have been a little early for stalwart and recently married Tony Flood. As many will know the first tee is adjacent to the restaurant and bar, not of course in striking distance, unless you are Floody, he of the oil rigs. His opening drive came off the toe of the club narrowly avoiding the trees protecting the bar. The 100 m.p.h. Titleist missile made a 6 inch hole in one of the chairs around a table being cleaned by a startled then angry waiter. Needless to say apologies all round, no physical harm only embarrassment for the new groom. Most of the 35 playing contingent fair to say, performed better than Floody´s opener. Only one point separated the top four, with Christian Attwood top of the pile with 36 points, but an incredible 23 point back nine, including 5 pars and a birdie, plus a double bogey 18th, to prove he is human. Dexter O´Dea, the hard drinking, cigar smoking Irishman equalled Attwood´s effort but lost out on countback, however, consolation was 2 nearest the pins, his second to 2 feet on the 18th (3 shots). O´Dea´s 9 pars and 2 birdies was only second best of the day, that accolade went to Ben Chadwick who notched up 11 pars and a lone birdie. The Hub´s next event is this coming Sunday the 13th September at the prestigious Las Colinas complex, for the John Goodwin Shield sponsored by PJ´s Rentacar. RESULTS: “Photo Lounge” N.T.P. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE All of the golf courses on the Costa Blanca operate a seasonal pricing strategy with high and low season prices where the prices are at there highest or lowest point. Roughly speaking the high season months are March,April,May September,October and November although there is some slight overlap of these periods by courses that operate a third medium season period. The bad news for both resident and tourist golfers alike is that the summer low season period is quickly coming to an end and after 21/09/15 only a few courses such as El Plantio,Las Colinas,La Peraleja and Vistabella will still have low season prices available. Golfers also have to be aware of which courses are hollow tining or recovering from such work and may find playing options with low prices limited. Once we are in the Autumn high season period the prices increase significantly to reflect tourist demand and only Altorreal,Bonalba,La Serena,La Peraleja,La Marquesa and Vistabella will have prices less than €50 per person including a shared buggy at peak tee times. So why not fill your boots now and take advantage of the 'last of the summer wine' offers which we have listed below. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. JAVEA’S SLEDGERS & SHANKERS TAKE INAUGURAL ALICANTE CUP FROM SAN MIGUEL
Twenty-three members and 8 guests made their way to Alicante Golf for what was quite an important day of the society’s year, with the final round of the 2014/15 Order of Merit, the final of this year’s singles match play, and the first of what is to become an annual event, i.e. a match play competition against the Sledgers and Shankers Society from the Javea area playing for the consensually named Alicante Cup kindly donated by Alicante Golf Club. A normal weekly stableford competition was thrown in for good measure! The course was in excellent condition, although the greens very slow, and the weather finally somewhat cooler than of late. Taking things as listed above, Robin Eastman, having had an excellent year, confirmed his long held position of Order of Merit leader to win the main prize, with Barry Roehrig taking the runners-up place ahead of Mike Jordan in 3rd, who just managed to hold off the long time competition from Tony Smale. The singles match play final saw Mike Jordan (16) take on John Osborne (6) for the trophy. With full handicap difference being taken in to account John had to concede ten shot holes to Mike, which led to a very balanced and close fought match. All square after 9 and with never more than one in it until the 16th, when John went two up, Mike managed to take the last 2 holes to force a play-off. With the first extra hole halved, both decided to make a mess of the 2nd, with John making a lesser mess to finally take the trophy at the 20th hole. Well done John!! Thanks should go to the President and his wife for accompanying the pair to the very end, and to all those waiting back at the bar for hanging on for the day’s delayed presentation ceremony. Amongst those waiting were the 16 players who took part in the match
held between SMGS and SAS. With SMGS’s former Captain and continuing member Steve Davis being the common link, with Steve turning out for his more recently joined society, it was agreed by all that the match was held in the very best of spirits, keenly contested, and that the challenge should most definitely be repeated. SAS took the inaugural Alicante Cup 2.5 to 1.5. Congratulations to them and we look forward to taking it off them next year!!! And last, but not least, to the day’s stableford competition results which were, by category and in reverse order: Silver Category: 4th Marg Birtwistle (33 on CB), 3rd Norman McBride (34), 2nd Ray Ewings with a very good 38, and 1st, appearing to have recovered pretty well from a recent operation, Mr Treasurer Keith Stevenson with the day’s best score of 39 points. Gold Category: 4th Mike Frankish (32), 3rd John Osborne (34 on CB), 2nd Barry Roehrig (34) and 1st, Ivan Hanak playing to his handicap with 36 points. The Abacus was won by Mick Roscoe. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Taff (the Slice) of SAS (3), Keith Wraithmell (6), Brian Page, also of Sas (8), Taff again (12), Darren Hancock (15) and Barry Roehrig (17). Two best guest prizes, with Mike Boyle (36) beating Keith Lockyer on CB. Our thanks go to the staff at Alicante golf course for their contribution to an excellent day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next Wednesday, Sept 9th, we will be at Villamartin.

Out of sorts Torry draw a blank at Saguntino No need to panic just yet, but 3 games into the new season, Torry are definitely NOT firing on all cylinders! Manager Pedreno cannot be accused of lacking imagination, for he made 5 changes from last weeks dramatic last gasp draw against Borriol. Out went Adrian, Burguillas, Cavas, Juanma and Luis Carlos, whilst Carrasco, Eddy, Brani, Matej and Lewis returned to the starting line up. Surprisingly, there wasn't even space on the bench for Adrian and Luis Carlos, but hey I'm not the manager! Expectations are high regarding prolific goal scorer Juanfran, but unfortunately he seems to have lost the knack of putting the ball away. Saguntino is always a tough place to grind out a result, as last season 0-0 draw proved, and this time around was no exception. The first 15 or so minutes were a pretty dull affair, as both sides were involved in a game of chess, with neither prepared to make the killer move! In fact, the first shot on target didn't arrive until 17 mins, with Oscar easily gathering a tame shot from the hosts Trilles. Quintero became the first of many Torry players to pick up a booking, as frustration was clearly
showing. A peach of a cross field pass by Lewis found Juanfran on 26 mins, but alas he blasted over, and a great opportunity to open the scoring was lost. Less than 3 mins later, the same player was
Athletic Saguntino......1 CD Torrevieja ...............0
guilty of an even worse miss, shooting wide with the goal at his mercy. Carrasco saw yellow, later to prove costly, for a nothing challenge. As the tempo increased, both sides became more adventurous. Gamez tried his luck from long range, just missing the target, then on 34 mins he did put the ball in the net, but luckily for Pedreno's men, the effort was ruled out for a push. Shortly afterwards, Brani beat 2 players, looked to go all the way, but brave keeper Adri dived at his feet to avert the danger. Sloppy defending presented Nestor with a chipped shot,
which thankfully eased over Oscars outstretched arm, and the cross bar on 39 mins. Saguntino took the lead on 50 mins, when an accurate far post cross from the left was side footed home by an unmarked Gamez. Sub Cesar initiated Torry's best move of the 2nd half, beating 3 players before watching his goal bound shot well saved, then from the rebound, Brani had his shot acrobatically cleared off the line by a defender. Disaster struck on 64 mins, when Carrasco harshly picked up a 2nd yellow, leading to the walk of shame. Down to 10 men, Torry defended stoutly. Apart from a vital Oscar punch off the line, Saguntino never really looked like increasing their lead, as the game meandered to a conclusion. Second half bookings for Lewis, Juanfran and Matej, plus a solitary yellow card for the hosts, were probably justified, in a match which was best described as scrappy. On Sunday 13 September, ko 6pm, Torry have a golden opportunity to put things right, when Alzira visit Vicente Garcia Stadium.
