In addition there were a further thirty municipal cleaning staff and vehicles used to scrub up the adjacent areas on Thursday morning as the ‘partied out’ revellers, many in traditional costume, made their way home, after a night of loud music and dance. Despite cancellation of the event last year Mariola Rocamora, the councillor for festivities, having spent several hours with local organisers, gave her approval to the event saying that it met with all legal requirements. “The company commissioned to organise the festival has all the necessary permits as well as liability insurance, fire cover, private insurance and cover for any emergency that might possibly arise” she said. And so, as scheduled, in front of a specially erected mobile stage, the doors were opened at 10pm on Wednesday night. As the music increased in volume so did the number of the partygoers, with numbers quickly surpassing the anticipated attendance. This year glass bottles were banned from the event as a result of which there were far fewer problems than have been the case in the past. Although medical staff were on hand throughout the night, apart from a number of revellers suffering from alcohol intoxication and, as a result of the dimmed lighting and the current methods of dance, rather more struggling with ankle sprains, there was little to trouble the emergency services and
Monday, 10th August, 2015 for the most part, the night passed with little incident. Mariola Rocamora said that the site had been surrounded by security fencing which confined the celebrants to the allocated area, one of the main objectives being to keep them away from the beach and the Campoamor residential areas. But despite the lack of incident, and, other than a great deal of noise, the less than anticipated inconvenience to local residents, the night passed off with a reasonable degree of success. As I walked around the area at 7.30 the following morning those many partygoers remaining were still in a cheerful mood as they drifted away while the municipal staff cleared up the tons of rubbish that they had left behind. But not all local residents feel that such 'Macrobotellóns' are good for the Orihuela Costa, especially two such events within such a short space of time, the second being planned for La Zenia Boulevard this coming Wednesday. Roman Jimenez says that the Orihuela Costa is a town lacking many facilities. There are not enough pólice, there is no library, despite it’s 30 000 residents, and only one SAMU ambulance on call during the summer. So it is with a great deal of apprehension that he looks ahead to the La Zenia Music Festival which more than 10,000 youngsters are expected to attend. The event will be held on the main La Zenia Boulevard car park starting at 7pm in the evening and last through to 7am on Thursday morning so Jimenez feels that the already chaotic traffic system will become even more overburdened by the arriving partygoers. He says that there will be accidents and the people of Orihuela Costa will undoubtedly be without their one SAMU ambulance overnight, so obviously not a good night to fall ill!
LET’S GET THINGS GOING ON THE ORIHUELA COSTA
If you find a problem that you would like the Orihuela Costa authorities to deal with you must first of all make sure that they know about it. You can do this by taking a photo of the offending item and sending it, with a short explanation, to email address:
residentes@orihuela.es. We now have a new councillor for the coast, Sofia Alvarez, who lives amongst us on the Orihuela Costa, so let’s make sure that everyone is fully aware of any problems that need addressing, then there is no excuse!
The Policia Locale are overstretched already as is the coastal infrastructure that will not be able to cope with the additional 10,000 people expected to flock into the area. “And what are the residents of the Orihuela Costa expected to gain from such events?” he asks. “Nothing at all. So my advice to everyone is to stay indoors an Wednesday night and do not drive.” Jimenez says that the company organising the event is only 6 months old and does not have

the expertise to handle such a major concert. Similarly he says that he fully expects many of the revellers to be high on drugs or intoxicated with alcohol and the police to have their hands completely full. “I have no confidence in this Town Hall which constantly chooses to forget that residents of Orihuela Costa are also human beings with needs of their own and that we pay the taxes that keep the councillors and the municipal staff in jobs.”

He warns, “Be careful on the day because I feel that the risks will be high but I do hope that I am wrong.” A warning most certainly to heed, but in view of the lack of reported problems that arose at last week’s Campoamor Party I would like to think that those attending Carnaval Xairo next Wednesday night will enjoy themselves but will also respect the wishes of the local residents. Unions criticise lack of Hospital Care Plan Nursing staff will find themselves under particular pressure in the coming weeks
Another major medical union, Convergencia Estatal de MĂŠdicos y de EnfermerĂa (CEMSATSE), has criticised the management company at Torrevieja Hospital for what they say is a "total lack of foresight" of the health facility’s planners and Human Resources staff when organising mediacal and nursing cover for the anticipated increase in patients that the hospital will inevitably meet during the holiday period. Despite the warnings given by their representatives at least thirty beds generally used for unscheduled surgeries have been closed and as such places are currently far more limited than they should be for those many patients who might need to use the facility. "There would appear to be no contingency plan for increased admissions, nor have additional staff been taken on to cover the most basic needs and few measures that have been taken are both been late and inadequate, with the constant addition and removal of just a handful of beds for convenience", said a CEMSATSE spokesperson. The situation is especially demanding in the Maternal and Child units where it is difficult to forecast the number of beds that are needed at any given time. The union says that its members have warned Human Resources about such a situation on sever-
al occasions, where services such as ER, ICU, Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Surgery must be adequately staffed. They say that they remember the chaos last year when there was no replacement cover made for emergency room staff who were absent on holiday. That situation was further aggravated by staff leave, and lack of cover, in the maternity unit where currently the service is again undermanned despite the additional workload. On some nights there are as few as 2 doctors, two nurses and an auxiliary, on duty in the Accident and Emergency Department who are unable to deal with all the patients they are expected to treat, particularly when many of them are a life or death situation and in need of surgical resuscitation. CEMSATSE added that it is only the tolerance of patients and the integrity of the medical professionals that ensures the situation does not spiral completely out of control. They say that management must urgently take into account their requests so that such demanding situations in the hospital are avoided and the staff can provide the sort of service that the general public deserve and of which the hospital can be proud.

Fill your lungs with Torrevieja Pipes and Drums
Spain asks for Gibraltar discussions The State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ignacio Ybáñez, has told the United Kingdom that Spain's is ready to re-launch the ad-hoc regional cooperation mechanism in Gibraltar. ?This mechanism would be implemented through a series of informal meetings at a technical level to exchange information and best practices in an attempt to improve regional cooperation on issues of mutual interest, and not to get involved in issues of sovereignty or jurisdiction. The implementation of this mechanism would offer an opportunity to improve trust and understanding in an endeavour to improve neighbourly relations.
The talks would include participation from Spain and the United Kingdom, as well as from the local authorities in Gibraltar, the Regional Government of Andalusia and the Association of Councils of Gibraltar. The European Commission would be invited to take part as an observer. The re-launch of this mechanism comes within the framework of the new institutional panorama subsequent to the latest regional and local elections, following the constitution of the Regional Government of Andalusia and the various local councils, and after electing a new president of the Association of Councils of Gibraltar.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Barrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
The Robinson Crusoe Experience Islands have always fascinated me, and I also love a good story, which is probably why one in particular sticks in my mind. That book is Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, which was first published in 1719. It is the story of a castaway who spends thirty years on a remote tropical island. It is hardly a carefree holiday for the poor man, since Crusoe has to contend with mutineers, captives and cannibals before he is finally rescued. The exact location of Robinson's Crusoe's island has always been a bit of a mystery, with many saying that the story is based on an island off Chile, some refer to Fiji, whilst others believe that a tiny Canary Island was the setting. I have even read an account that claims it was based in Cornwall. Initially, readers thought that the book was an autobiography, but it was later discovered that the story was based on the life of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway, who lived for four years on the Pacific Island called ‘Más a Tierra', which is now part of Chile. To add to the confusion, the country's tourism chiefs cleverly changed the name to Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966. No doubt Defoe intended the book to be just a good story and not an exact account of a real life incident, and so I guess the location is really one based within the reader's imagination.
Personally, I like to think it is the Island of La Graciosa, a small Canary island, just a short ferry ride off the coast of the island of Lanzarote. Most of the island's current visitors are those from neighbouring Canary Islands and Spanish holidaymakers. La Graciosa, and 'Gracious' it certainly is, is a small, volcanic island, and one of the very few places where there are no tarmac roads, just white sandy tracks; to use the old cliché, it is just like stepping back in time. The island and nearby islets form part of the Chinijo Archipelago Marine Reserve, which is the largest marine reserve in Europe, as well as being an area of exceptional landscape value and beauty. Motor vehicles are strictly prohibited on La Graciosa, other than a few special purpose vehicles. The island has a small community of around 700 people living there, supplemented by a steady stream of day-trippers. There are few shops, and even fewer restaurants. Indeed, in typical post World Financial Crash fashion, only bank closed several years ago. It is not an island to visit if your main interest is shopping and nightlife. However, if you like visiting beautiful deserted beaches, walking, cycling and admiring breath-taking views, this little treasure could be just the thing to help blow away the stress accumulated from the outside world. I doubt that many will find their ‘Man Friday’ on the island, since the
The Island of La Graciosa, thought by some to be that featured in Robinson Crusoe
nightlife is pretty poor, and the cannibals left long ago. However, if you do visit one day, I am certain that it will be a visit to remember. Now, do please keep all this information quiet, because the island really is a well-kept secret, and we don't want too many to know about it, do we? Meanwhile, do dig out that old copy of Robinson Crusoe.

El Mojon Association demand beach improvements
The Association of El Mojon Residents wants the Pilar de la Horadada Council to take steps to address some of the shortcomings of El Mojon beach that separates the municipality pilareño and the Murcia town of San Pedro del Pinatar which they say are both urgent and long overdue. The group, chaired by Nicolas Navarro, presented a formal list of demands to the council. It was generated as a result of discussions with both full time residents of the resort and property owners who holiday in the village during the summer. Many of the requirements are as a result, they say, of the state of the beach, which
demands is for the installation of a temporary bridge to facilitate the transition of holidaymakers to the bathing area. The association believes that the current condition of the beach does not meet the necessary conditions necessary for the enjoyment of visitors; they say in the letter that "it is in an especially poor state, with abundant algae that is not collected, stagnant water that causes nasty odours and mosquito infestations." They also ask that two footpaths, recently withdrawn, are both reinstated. Another complaint raised is in respect of the litter bins which they ask to be relocated in other

Navarro insists is in an extremely poor condition. Much of the beach is now missing following earlier storms so one of the
parts of the municipality so that smells are gone. Navarro said that the additional influx of summer residents also justifies an increased police presence and a better cleaning schedule by municipal staff.
In Spain, 40% of non-EU cruise passengers do not recover the VAT on their purchases because there is no way to deal with the refund right at the port, according to international Tax Free operator Global Blue. This points to the big business involved in this market which brought in some 1.5 billion Euros to Spain last year. These non-EU tourists who, before leaving Spain, must have their receipts – known as Tax Free Forms – stamped in order to get a tax refund, find that they cannot easily process them in the port facilities but must go to the airport, where there are queues and insufficient information provided. Because of this, up to one in four non-EU cruiser passengers return home without the tax refund, i.e. twice as many as other non-EU tourists. For Global Blue, which processes more than 35 million tax refunds every year, overcoming administrative
obstacles like this one would help make Spain a really attractive destination for the more profitable cruise passengers. Providing a shopping experience that meets their expectations will help add not only volume but also quality to Spain’s tourism. In this area, data from Global Blue shows that non-EU visitors are the 'candy' for the tourism industry because of their high spending level. Specifically, they brought 1.5 billion Euros to the country last year, with Asians being the most profitable with an average ticket purchase of approximately 1,000 Euros, followed by the Russians with 535 Euros. At the time when technology rules, Global Blue is making a firm move to digitize and facilitate the VAT refund process, as happens in other European countries. www.tourism-review.com

Council promise to resolve deficiencies with Coastal cleaning
T
he Federation of Orihuela Costa (FAOC) met last Friday with the mayor of Beaches and international residents, Sofia Alvarez, and the new Head of Urban Cleanliness, Noelia Grao, putting to them the many complaints that are repeatedly brought up by the residents of the coast.
In a statement the spokesman of the group, Thomas Moreno, said that they wanted to highlight "the sorry state of neglect and filth that residents and holidaymakers have to regularly endure in the area," and to make the point they handed over a report listing 45 proposals that are needed to improve Cabo Roig, Campoamor and Aguamarina.
een as bmself h r i h yo ma for Theecking ch
Many of the grievances revolve around the lack of cleanliness, “but there are other demands,” he said, from the thousands of people who either reside permanently on the coast or the tourists who choose it as a destination for their holidays. Speaking about the lack of cleanliness Moreno said that "dirt prevails throughout the area, especially near the large stores run by the Chinese" where rubbish is left lying around, and where the pavements and roads are always filthy in the absence of the necessary water pressure cleaning. " “That same lack of cleanliness is evident in other areas, which need to be cleaned far more often than is presently the case, and where the rubbish bins also need to be thoroughly cleaned to avoid foul odors, especially with the summer heat." He also criticised the lack of regular fumigation, pests, mosquitoes, cockroaches and rodents which are attracted by the rubbish lying around in the streets and which pose health problems to local residents. The question of pruning the area’s palm trees was also raised with Moreno saying that regular attention to the palms “leaves much to be desired, and as they have failed to adequately treat the infestation of el picudo o el barrenillo de los pinos (the weevil and borer pines), the council is responsible for the death of many trees."
There does seem to be more of a presence of cleaning equipment on the coast than there has been for some while. He also cited the many complaints registered by the association about noise and litter in parks and along promenades, and the insufficient number of police officers, which result in daily criticism from residents.
The Association also warned that the coastal footpath at Cala Capitan still inoperative for the third consecutive year where there is a "very real landslide hazard and risk to users," although Councillor Alvarez explained that improvements will be address when the summer season ends.
Similarly he said that the cleaning and better maintenance of approaches to beaches could be improved, while he warned about the poor condition of many footbaths on the beaches themselves and the fact that they are often inoperative. He also told the councillors about the large amoung of broken glass, plastic and garbage that accumulates in the rocky coastal fronts like Aguamarina.
The federation spokesman maintained that the Orihuela Coast "continues to suffer from a huge lack of investment in infrastructure" and that it is necessary to address the pavements and road surfaces in many streets, inadequate lighting 'and road traffic markings which has not been renewed for many years as a result of which zebra crossings and junctions are invisible with the risks to both pedestrians and to road traffic.”
The councillor for Urban Cleanliness, Noelia Grao, said that since coming to power she has increased the number of cleaning staff working on the beaches by ten people and she is aware that the current PP government wants to find a model of management which will, in future, pay more attention to the needs of residents the coast.
Celebrating 8 years in Quesada
I
t is hard to believe that it has been 8 years since Mulberry’s was first featured on TV. Since appearing on the hit BBC series Living in the Sun, Mulberry’s has built up a fantastic reputation. The restaurant’s loyal clientele has grown year on year and it is not difficult to see why. The incredibly popular restaurant, just a stone’s throw from the famous ‘Arches’ in Quesada, offers a stylish and relaxed dining experience. Its intimate bistro atmosphere offers diners the option to eat in the Parisian style dining room, or on the ambient lit terrace. The menu is also impressive. Diners can tantalise their taste buds with something different with imaginative and innovative dishes on offer, combining new and stimulating international flavours – and each dish is as delicious as the next. Mulberry´s is one of the very few restaurants in the region to make fresh food to order, using high quality locally and internationally sourced ingredients. With the open plan kitchen you can even watch the chefs as they prepare your food to the highest standards. Menus are constantly evolving and feature starters such as Mediterranean brochettes, or their sweet chilli chicken salad with toasted nuts and fresh coriander. Main courses include El Burrito Grande, mixed poppers and char grilled chicken or vegetable wrapped in a flour tortilla, served with rice and homemade salsa, sour cream and salad. Another thing Mulberry´s really prides themselves on are their steaks, offering sirloin and rump steaks, cooked to your liking and served with homemade chips or mash, seasonal fresh vegetables and a selection of sauces. We also recommend the lamb and the selection of fresh fish, also
the pizzas are certainly worth a mention, as you can make up your own from a huge selection of toppings. Also on offer is a great selection of vegetarian dishes, including a lovely Thai vegetable curry. With the warmth of the friendly staff, the affordable prices and the great atmosphere, Mulberry’s really is a rare find. Mulberry´s II is now open in Urb La Marina – they have just celebrated 2 years in La Marina- with the same fantastic menu as the original Mulberry´s I in Ciudad Quesada. Hail devastates crops in 11 Alicante towns
T
HE HAIL STORMS seen last weekend left a trail of destruction to the north of Alicante, inland from Benidorm, where, according to la asociación Jóvenes Agricultores (the Young Farmers association), 70% of its members’ crops of grapes, almonds, olives and summer fruits, were destroyed, in eleven municipalities. They described the situation as serious even before the latest devastation saying that local farmers had already been punished by the widespread lack of rain over the past two years, the problems of low prices and their increased operating costs. Most of the damage was caused by the egg-sized hail in a period of just ten minutes also effecting damage to cars, the agricultural infrastructure,
machinery, warehouse buildings, property and many other smaller plantations, particularly at the Beneixama epicentre. Other villages and towns where the agriculture sector was badly affected included the municipalities of Villena, Camp de Mirra, Alfafara, Agres, Bocairent, Muro de Alcoi, Alcocer de Planes, Gaianes and Planes. There was also a short and intense storm a week earlier in Villena, El Pinos, El Mañán (Monóvar) and Biar after which the Union estimated a 30% loss in local olive and almond groves grove as well as an unquantified loss of fruit. Eladio Aniorte, a spokesman for Asaja, the Young Farmers Union, said that what is more
worrying is the damage caused you young plants, which will inevitably lead to future declines in the coming seasons. He said that the situation in the areas concerned is "as bleak as he can ever remember". "This is one of the most aggressive hail-storms in memory and my members now desperately need assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture. A large number of farmers are inadequately insured because of the high cost of premiums and now there are far too many who are left without any support to deal with their terrible losses."
Cleaning up the villages A total of 104 unemployed residents formerly working in the agricultural sector have recently completed a project involving cleaning
and clearing up the rubbish in rural villages and green areas within the municipality. Councillor for Employment, Victor Valverde, said they had been employed thanks to a subsidy, 353,800 euros from the Valencian Government. He says that some of the work was carried out on the coast....in which case Councillor, if they have done an equally good job in the villages, I would suggest you’ve been robbed!

Pitt and Jolie to purchase entire island of Gaia, Greece for $4.7m - thwarting Los Montesinos move? By ANDREW ATKINSON BRAD Pitt and Angelina Jolie are reportedly planning to purchase the entire island of Gaia in Greece - for $4.7m - that could thwart a possible house purchase in Spain. *SkyNews initially reported in 2013 that Hollywood star actors Pitt and Jolie visited Los Montesinos, Alicante, having boarded a private jet to fly to Murcia airport, and were driven to the Vega Baja small town to look at property. There are other, far less important areas where they could be making savings if they really want to.”

As a result Los Montesinos was certainly put on the 'world map'. Pitt and Jolie had allegedly been looking at a multi-million euro property - set in acres of land - on the outskirts of the town. The owner of BarCharley, situated in Los Montesinos square, overlooked by the Church and picturesque bell tower, told me that Spain's national television network, TVE, had been in contact with him. "I received a call from TVE asking if I had seen Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie," he said. "Unfortunately I haven't seen them," he added Despite no sightings of Pitt and Jolie, talk continues unabatedly, with one resident telling me that Brad Pitt was looking to purchase land to build a house at La Marquesa.

Spain could be heading for constitutional tension after Catalonian President, Artur Mas, signed a decree on Monday clearing the way for elections on the September 27 – ahead of a Spanish general election due by the end of the year. Separatist leaders, who include Mas, say if they make up a majority after the poll then they will launch a bid for independence. Meanwhile during a speech in Madrid Prime Minister Rajoy lambasted the plans for a vote saying that he would not allow anyone to break up Spain or to derail the economic recovery. “Nobody is going to turn the citizens of Catalonia into foreigners in their own country,” he said.

Family left high and dry by Goldcar K elly Harbour and her family were left stranded by hire car company Goldcar for 5 days as a result of being given a faulty car by their staff at Murcia Airport.
A 900 euro deposit and 102 euro for a full tank of fuel (whatever happened to those falling oil prices) gave them just 4 days of trouble free motoring following which a fault cropped up with the airconditioning system, not ideal in the current heat.
Goldcar’s answer was for the family to return the car to Murcia but, holidaying over an hour’s drive from the airport, and with two young children, one autistic, and of course without any form of airconditioning that particular solution was far from reasonable so the Harbour family declined the offer and soldiered on with the existing car, but the problems were not to end there! Four more days elapsed and the car developed a major oil leak. Once again the Goldcar staff told Kelly to return the car to Murcia Airport. “They really didn’t care about the predicament we were in” she said. “They simply refused to offer any further help”. “Fortunately my Spanish speaking husband then got involved but Goldcar’s only resolution was to send a tow truck, for which we would have to pay a further 110 euro.” On looking at the car the Grua employee agreed with our diagnosis but wouldn’t take the car as Kelly and her husband refused to make the payment. They did, however, drive the car themselves to a local garage. Kelly continues “ the mechanic condemned the car and said it was not fit for purpose, it was dangerous to drive and he would not let it back on the road! He said exactly the same to Goldcar and what did they do? Nothing! They told us again to get a taxi back to the airport to get another car at a cost of 100 euro. Had we done so I have no doubt that the company would have then charged us for another full tank of petrol at 102 euro for the new car.”
Hearing of their plight The Leader then spoke to staff at the Spanish Headquarters in Madrid following which Goldcar called the family offering to pay for a taxi to Murcia Airport for them to pick up another car. However, as they were leaving Spain on the following day they decided to decline the offer. Goldcar then offered to pay for a taxi to take the family back to the airport to meet their flight, which they of course accepted. In addition they also contacted Kelly confirming that the car was indeed faulty, offering to refund the left over fuel and the remaining days car hire charge.
MOTHER JAILED A Spanish woman who threw her newborn baby out of a window has been jailed for 4 years after being found guilty of attempted murder. The 37-yearold had secretly given birth to the baby girl on Christmas Eve in a flat she shared with her parents. A Madrid court heard that the woman, who has a “moderate mental disability”, cut the umbilical cord and tossed it out of the ground-floor window onto a courtyard, a fall of around six feet. The woman was discovered covered in blood and was taken to hospital. Some hours later, her mother found the baby on the courtyard floor and called the emergency services.
PP BACK IN FRONT
“As we were unable to get back to Murcia Airport we were left stranded without a car, no way of getting back to our villa, no way of getting to the shops to get supplies.”
Kelly says “ I guess I am going have to accept this as I doubt I will get any further, despite them leaving us stranded for 5 days, and spoiling our holiday. I think they should be compensating me for that too as well as the phone calls I had to make. One thing is for sure, I have let everyone know that I will not be booking with them again!
Needless to say the Harbour family are extremely disappointed at the service provided by Goldcar and have vowed never to use the company again. Follow up emails sent to the office were ignored leaving the family without any form of transport for the remainder of their holiday.
The Leader will continue to follow up Kelly’s complaint with Goldcar in the hope that they will do the decent thing. So come on Goldcar, you completely ruined the families holiday that they had worked for the last year to afford so, at the very least, they should be offered some form of financial compensation.
“My husband told Goldcar that we had no means of getting to the airport but they simply didn't care. They said that this was the only option.”

The ruling conservative Popular Party has taken a clear lead over rivals in a fragmented political landscape 4 months before a general election but looks set to fall far short of a majority to govern alone. ‘Spicy Bites’ A welcome new addition to
THE CITRUS CENTRE
SWEEPING THE ORIHUELA COSTA CLEAN Dear Editor, First of all I would welcome the new Councillor to the position. Could I suggest that they set up an automatic reply as with this no one knows if their email has been received. Most people on the Costa are quite understandably very cynical of all politicians on the Orihuela council. Unfortunately our new councillor has started like her predecessors by blaming the other parties. She says in the Leader "It is something that has got gradually worse over the last 4 years". It has always been bad with Orihuela Costa being treated like second class citizens. She also makes much of living on the Costa, Monica Lorente, also claimed this and she was an absolute disgrace and lucky not to be in jail. Again the same PP party as our new councillor. It is early days but it is not necessary to submit photos to show, anyone can spend 5 minutes on the Costa to see it is filthy, with no facilities for old or young. Building has been allowed to start again with absolutely no thought about the woefully inadequate infrastructure. Around La Zenia Boulevard is a nightmare. Everything can be improved however corrupt politicians totally disregarded the entire area. Time will tell. Regards, Ian Fairburn BY EMAIL

RENEWAL OF EUROPEAN DRIVING LICENSES
YARIS HYBRID: Double the choice with new Active and Sport from Toyota
EU driving licenses are valid for driving throughout the Spanish territory. The renewal of EU driving licenses requires the holder to undergo psychometric aptitude tests and be legally resident in Spain.
Owning a new Toyota Hybrid becomes easier than ever before with two new models joining the Yaris Hybrid line-up. The addition of Active and Sport versions means there’s now a hybrid in all four grades in Toyota’s top-selling supermini range. Active becomes the new entry point to Toyota’s clean, efficient and super-smooth hybrid technology. The five-door hatch
comes equipped with dual-zone climate control, trip computer, power front windows and a split-folding rear seats. What also comes as standard is the quiet and refined Toyota hybrid experience together with 75g/km CO2 emissions and official combined cycle fuel economy of 85.6mpg. The low emissions mean no annual road tax (VED) to pay and, for London drivers, exemption from the congestion charge. The Sport cuts a sharper dash with rear privacy glass, 16-inch alloy wheels, rear spoiler and a rear pillar treatment that creates a floating roof effect. Other key features include climate control, power windows all round and
the Toyota Touch 2 multimedia system with DAB radio, Bluetooth, touchscreen control and rear view camera. An optional Skyview panoramic roof can also be specified (£550). Using the larger alloy wheel brings a modest change in the benchmark figures to 82g/km and 78.5mpg but Yaris Hybrid Sport retains the benefit of zero road tax. Pricing and launch offers The new Yaris Hybrid Active is launched with an on-the-road price tag of £14,995, including a special £300 introductory customer saving. Yaris Hybrid Sport is priced at £16,695. Both models are made highly affordable with attractive AccessToyota PCP deals. The new Active model is available through an AccessToyota PCP arrangement at 4.9 per cent APR. The Yaris Hybrid Sport can be obtained with £900 finance deposit allowance and nought per cent APR.

One of the world’s most popular capitals MADRID WAS NOT ALWAYS SPAIN’S CAPITAL CITY. In medieval Spain this honour fell to Toledo. It was in June 1561 that Philip II moved the court from Toledo to the fast growing city of Madrid. At that time the city had a population of some 30,000 inhabitants. Philip II had the good fortune to reign over Spain just as the wealth from the recently conquered south American continent was filling the royal coffers. Philip was charged with the task of building a suitable burial place for his father. The notorious Charles V of Austria (1st of Spain). Who whilst still in his late fifties had surrendered the crown to his son with this condition attached. A site was chosen at El Escorial (meaning the slag heap), which was from that date on to become the burial place of almost every Spanish king ,queen, royal consort ,and their children both legitimate and illegitimate. The monastery of San Lorenzo built by King Philip at that site still serves as the Royal Burial place .This huge monastery with its 2,000 windows sits in the shadow of the impressive Guadarrama mountain range. The small town of El Escoral which has sprung up around the monastery, sits amongst
green fields. A sense of history fills it cobbled streets. Tasteful architecture continually reminds us of the presence of hundreds of royal personages from earlier, and often more troubled times than our own. Each of these departedroyals having left us with a memory of the part they played in the progress towards a modern European nation. A visit to the monastery fills you with wonder at the incredible skills of medieval builders and stone masons. Coming back to Madrid. We find a pleasing combination of old and new in this thriving city which sits right in the heart of Spain. Here you have the RoyalPalace which has been home to these many generations of royals. Treasure troves of some of the finest art exhibitions in the world can be found in the ReinaSofiaMuseum, the Thyssen museum, and undoubtedly one of the most famous museums in the world –The Prado. The naval museum helps us to relive the story of the Spanish Armada, the national Archaeological museum exhibits evidence of mans development in Spain. Famous statues such as the Cibeles fountain and the gates of Alcala adorn wide Spain’s Royal burial site - EL ESCORIAL
sweeping avenues. Parks filled with flowers and trees are to be found throughout the city. The cream of these being the Buen Retiro which is built round a boating lake. .And of course Real Madrid, arguably the most successful club team in football history have their ground here. BUILDING COLLAPSE A four-storey apartment building in Madrid has collapsed just hours after firefighters evacuated residents. Occupants heard creaking at 4am and reported cracks in the 1960s building in Carabanchel. No injuries have been reported but some are being treated for panic attacks. Emergency services said that the poor condition of the foundations was to blame for the cracks.
SUITCASE DEATH A Moroccan man is said to have suffocated after stowing away in a suitcase for a ferry crossing to Almeria in Spain. The 27-year-old was found in the boot of a car, which arrived from Melilla – a Spanish enclave in North Africa. The owner of the vehicle, the dead man’s brother, has been arrested, according to government officials. He reportedly raised the alarm about the stowaway’s condition when the ferry docked. Emergency services were unable to revive him. The death in Almeria comes as Europe faces a migrant crisis. Many are fleeing poverty and violence in the Middle East and Africa.

So far not so good for new Orihuela government The long hot summer should soon be over but as far as Orihuela Costa is concerned, the performance of the new government can only be described as “so far not so good”. First of all the streets were filled for several weeks with rotting and stinking uncollected garden waste. And where there is waste other waste is always added leaving the streets a disgraceful mess and Orihuela Costa with a dreadful image in the eyes of the thousands of holidaymakers. Since we no longer have a Councillor for the Coast or an assistant, no solution was provided until the Mayor and the councillor in Orihuela city responsible for street cleaning came themselves and ordered additional equipment and manpower. The Mayor said Orihuela Costa would not have its own councillor since there were no serious problems and the services could be administered from the city. He promised we would be treated the same as Orihuela city or the surrounding villages who happen to have kept their own councillor. In the last week we have seen that this was an empty promise. The Councillor for Infrastructure has announced plans for urban improvements for up to €800,000. Ready for October, would be improvements in central areas of the city. Several surrounding villages would see works for improvements, notably putting electrical cables undergrounds. Nothing of any significance for Orihuela Costa which might benefit from clearing the dry river beds before autumn rains could produce flooding – essentially annual maintenance rather than improvements. The Mayor received a
delegation from the coast recently which complained that in some of the original urbanisations, no urban improvement of any significance had been carried out in the last 40 years The Mayor also said on one of his first visits to the coast that administrative services would be modernised and it would no longer be necessary to travel the 30 kilometres from the coast to the city for certain administrative purposes. Instead, we have had a collapse in the administrative services of Playa Flamenca with personnel on holiday, long queues for those who spend the summer here trying to sort out problems and pay local taxes. Most shocking are the lengthy procedures for those who are buying properties in Orihuela Costa and need an NIE number from the national police department in Playa Flamenca to complete the transaction and open bank accounts. In Orihuela Costa this procedure can take a month to complete whereas in nearby cities like Elche the procedure can take only a day or two. Consultancy firms are offering to carry out the procedure outside of Orihuela Costa for €50 when it should cost €9. The Town Hall of Orihuela seems to be totally ignorant of and unconcerned about the administrative needs of the increasing number of those who are again investing in properties on the coast, providing employment in construction and related sectors and producing valuable income for the Town Hall. And try telephoning the Playa Flamenca office of the Town Hall. It could take hours to get through to the department you want, if they are not away on holiday!

Press Release
CLARO say that as thousands flow into the area on holiday the frequency of the local bus service has been reduced Finally, at the end of May, before the holiday season began, the local Orihuela Costa bus service frequency was reduced from once every hour to once every hour and a half. Some flimsy sheets of paper were put up at bus stops to announce the new timetable but these have too often blown away or been removed. No official announcement was made of this substantial reduction in local services either by the outgoing government who introduced the measure or the new government, whose Councillor for Transport provides
the press with fancy ideas of future improvements but without acknowledging the deterioration in the present service. The timing of this reduction in the service could not be worse. There are thousands of additional residents in Orihuela Costa during the summer. The local bus is small and too often those who have not seen the flimsy sheet announcing the new timetable have to wait an extra half hour for the bus they want and if it is full then they have to wait another hour and a half. What kind of service is this?

Market traders and street vendors clash in Torrevieja
SPAIN TO BUY DRONES Spain is to buy four Reaper surveillance drones making it the fifth European nation to equip itself with the US-made devices. The defence ministry's budget for 2016, which was presented in parliament on Tuesday, sets aside 25 million euros ($27 million) to buy the reconnaissance drones and two ground stations.
PICASSO SIEZED A painting by Pablo Picasso which is considered to be a Spanish national treasure has been found on a yacht linked to a billionaire scion of the Botín Santander banking family in Corsica, just months after a court in Madrid upheld an earlier decision to block a sale overseas. The Head of a Young Woman is said to be worth about €25m (£17.6m) and was seized in Calvi by French customs officers who said that the painting was on its way to Switzerland. They intervened last week after the work “drew the attention of French officials”. They had been tipped off that the painting was on the island.
The market traders say that the illegal vendors are mainly those displaced by the police from del paseo Juan Aparicio two years ago. The police were called in on Friday to deal with a clash between market traders and street vendors at the weekly Torreveija Market. The clash occurred on la calle Maestro Casanovas when market stall holders, who pay a fee for the use of their market pitch, confronted a group of street vendors who had set out their wares directly in front. The illegal traders, most of sub Saharan origin, are those largely displaced by the authorities from del paseo de Juan Aparicio en 2013. A spokesman complained about the lack of management staff walking around the market and moving on those traders who were trading illegally. “We pay for our market pitch up to 100 euros per metre, we are here come rain or shine and yet these people are allowed to wander onto the market and set themselves up without any sort of a challenge. It’s totally out of order.” On Friday, scuffles broke out when a group of Market Traders confronted a number of illegal traders, in an attempt to move them on. However the fracas was quickly broken up with the arrival of the Policia Locale. The spokesman said “We are simply asking for a better police presence or market management, someone walking around the market and moving these people on. We feel, for the loyalty we show to Torrevieja and for the prices that we are paying to trade legally, that we should be provided with at least that.” The City Council wants to relocate the market to a site at the fairground adjacent to Avenida Delfina Viudes in September, when a new bus line has been introduced.
Breakwater to be extended by 80 mtrs in La Torre
Work carried out earlier in the year on the breakwater at Torre de la Horadada which protects the Paseo del Sardinero is to be extended at the end of the holiday period. The present infrastructure includes about 270 meters of stone barrier from the quarry at Cabezo Gordo, the same type of stone that has been used at both the Marina and the pier of Playa del Puerto. The gaps between the stones are filled with concrete. The council have now announced that they will extend the barrier by a further 80 metres, work that will be carried out in October and November. Mayor Ignacio Ramos says that this will complete
the work on a problem dating back to the year 2000 when the town council first requested the project be carried out by the Provincial Coastal Service. The problems have been compounded over the years by storms, particularly those since 2008, during which time the Coastal Service initially built a 30 meter stretch of wall at the Playa del Puerto. Further repairs, including a 60 meter stretch in the same area, were completed in 2014. The work was further extended earlier this year and now, with the announcement of the additional stretch of breakwater, this should pretty much protect the whole of that section form further erosion.

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. The Benefits of Professsional Coaching If you visit any driving range you will see high handicap golfers giving other high handicap golfers golf tips and coaching. If there one piece of advice that I can give to you its is “never take advise from someone no better than yourself” and instead take proper instruction from qualified coaches with a good reputation. We are fortunate on the Costa Blanca to have access to some excellent coaches but usually for reasons of perceived costs or benefits many golfers shy away from taking lessons. We at the LEADER in conjunction with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services are going to give you the opportunity to receive first class coaching from Challenge Tour Professional Jordan Gibb and his colleague Ryan Boal using some of the latest coaching techniques, including 'stack & tilt' and 'eyeline'. A 'tour strike clinic' will be held at Vistabella on Sunday 6th September 2015 from 10am to 1pm introducing coaching techniques that re-define how golf is taught while mastering the three fundamentals of hitting great golf shots. The cost of the day is €59 per person including a bacon roll, coffee and welcome pack on arrival and is limited to 16 people maximum and reservations will be on a first come first served basis and contact Ryan (634188534) or Jordan (642887480) to reserve a place. This golf clinic day is being run in association with the LEADER poppy appeal golf day also being held at Vistabella on 19th September 2015 and Ryan and Jordan will be making a contribution to the poppy appeal from the proceeds of the clinic day. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card
Rogers is Cafe Uno’s ‘Golden Boy’ Café Uno Golf Society. By Steve Lawrence. 27 members and guests from Café Uno Golf Society played at Font Del Llop golf course near Aspe recently. This course although in excellent condition, is not always the favourite of some of our higher handicappers. It is a long course with some very challenging holes, so it's not for the faint hearted golfer. We had a mixture of mid-summer weather today, comfortably warm, warm and humid, followed by very hot and humid, topped off with a cracking thunder storm and rain for about ten minutes. Then we got hot and dry again and longing to reach the eighteenth hole, where within sight was the nineteenth hole where cool pints of lager were awaiting. You need to keep your fluids up in this weather you know! Anyway, some good scores came in in our two categories and were as follows:-
Gold Category. 1st R.Rogers - 36pts. 2nd A.Rich - 31pts. Best front 9 - G.Benson 17pts. Best back 9 - T.Rogers 16pts.c/b. Nearest the pin - T.Rogers. Nearest the pin in 2 - L.George. Winners of the 2's competition G.Benson and N.Padmore. Best guest was P.Hodson. Thanks to all for a good turn out today, and thanks to café Uno for the hospitality. Third place enough to keep Adamson at the top Photo shows L/R Paul Durrant, Ian Carmichael, Christian Attwood, Kev Adamson
A visit to La Finca is always a pleasure to most, the membership from the Hub (Villamartin) no exception, particularly as the course is even better now that new green staff are making their mark on the excellent Algorfa layout. A reasonable contingent of 30 players contested the ninth round of the Society´s Grand Prix competition, playing the usual Stableford format. Some superb 9 hole scores were recorded by several guests, namely Adrian Shaw son of member Andy, who birdied the 7th, 8th and stroke index one 9th for an outgoing 21 points with a “blob” on the 2nd and the 6th. Not unsurprisingly he couldn’t keep the charge going, but still managed a creditable 36 points. Shaw´s 21 points was however eclipsed by Ian Carmichael on the front 9 with a two on the Par 3 6th, for a 22 point total plus Shaun Hixon making 22 points this time on the back 9 to include two birdies. He must have been pleased with himself as a lowly 8 points on the front 9 gave him a respectable 30 point total. The 2´s competition was very interesting, four players sharing the pot Shaun Hixon making sure of his share with one on the 13th and another on
the 16th. Scores from the members was a little more subdued, the Committee´s handicap system severely hampering outstanding scoring. Best 9 came from Christian Attwood with a back 9 of 18 points, including a no score on the difficult 17th. Attwood, now seemingly fully recovered from his recent severe bout of sea sickness, took first place and 15 points to move in to the Grand Prix´s top ten with 6 events to play. Kev Adamson currently leads the table. The Hub´s next outing is this coming Thursday (13th August) at La Torre Saurines for a two man better ball competition. All are welcome, register at the Hub, Villamartin. RESULTS “Photo Lounge” N.T.P. TMGS back to their roots T.M.G.S. 3rd Anniversary at Campoamor 5/8/15 To celebrate our 3rd Anniversary we again returned to where it all began, Real club de golf Campoamor to play for the “Anniversary Shield”. We played just a few days after the annual competition in honour of the “Conde de Barcelona” this prestigious competition demands that the course plays at its most difficult, well it was certainly that when it came to the greens. They had not been watered since Thursday evening last week, which in this heat meant that they resembled the greens of the US Open. Although they were irrigated as normal from Sunday evening, some burnt patches were still evident, but the ball did roll true, happy to say that by the time that you read this they should be back to normal. Why should I be writing this, well we had no fewer than 5 players play better than par, yes ok, albeit by a shot or 2, that is until we come to the winner of the Silver Category. In recent week’s I have written about the “Vikings” that make up our Norwegian members and a couple of weeks ago I mentioned that the “Pirate raiders” had pushed off in their long boats heading up the North sea to the oil platforms, well it appears that I overlooked one of them, don’t really know how that happened, as he has frequently been in the frame, so much so that he even won the “Player of the Month” prize for July. This Viking will be pushing off in his long boat to take him and his contraband back home to Norway, at least until late October. That will give the rest of the membership a chance to win 1 or 2 prizes. It must be said that this guy has reduced his E.G.A. handicap by a full 6 stokes during the last 3 months. Haven’t guessed who he is yet? Ok let me enlighten you. Here are the results for the Silver Category. 4th place Mick Kennedy on lower handicap with 34 pts. 3rd place Per Arne Skarnes 35 pts. 2nd place and with 38 pts. must have thought that he had won, John Hillier but in 1st place with an incredible score of 46 pts. YES 46 pts. was that Viking, Carsten Landaas and of course is this year’s winner of the Anniversary Shield. Scores in the Gold Category were also good with Alan Rixson taking 4th
place with 34 pts. 3rd place went to school teacher Derek “Peter” Sullivan 36 pts.; new member Stephen Ross took 2nd place with 37 pts. losing out on lower handicap to our Captain John Eyre. The best of just a few visitors this week was Fredrik Bjorling also with 37 pts. N.T.P.’s this week, Hole 4 Paul Aston, Hole 6 Mick Kennedy, Hole 10 Stephen Ross, Hole 15 Andy Skinner and Hole 17 Dag Lovas. During the presentation the members enjoyed hot and cold tapas provided by the club. As in recent events after all winning cards had been removed, we did a card draw where almost every-
one went home with a prize. Many thanks go to the members that generously donated the various prizes. Photos: Carsten Landaas and all of the day’s winners. Our next event is at La Finca on the 12th August, Note for your diary 2 day golf trip to Las Pinaillas (Albacete) golf, buggy, hotel presentation meal all for just €100 everyone is welcome to join us for this event, you can find the full info and more at www.tmgs.org or call the secretary on 661 524 101 visit us at Facebook/tmgsgolf or tweet us at @tmgsgolf

Don’t forget the scissors Mr Neal! Las Ramblas Golf Society play three times weekly on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Las Ramblas G.C. with a tranche of prebooked T-Times starting at 8-18 am. We are an international group with members from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Switzerland and of course a bunch of "Brits". Once a month we have a "Social" at a neighboring restaurant and often times with non golfers joining in we top 70, sometimes 80 attendees. More details at www.lasramblassocialclub.com Our first team game of the week on Monday 3/8 was a 4 ball Texas Scramble - 10% of combined handicaps for a 4 player team, 17.5% for a team of 3, 4 drives each for a 4 man team or 5 each in a 3 playesr team. Numbers were down again at this time of year but the winners with a net score of 15 under par (57) were the so called "dream team" of Lindsay Forbes, Rod (Driver) Doel, Geoff (18) Biggerstaff and Bryan Neal. With 7 birdies on the front 9 and 2 more on the back, no shots were dropped and there was only one 5 on the card, 3's and 4's on all holes except the par 5 third where all the team had a ten foot attempt to secure the birdie and all putts just shaved the hole. Wednesday was our singles Stableford competition and with numbers still down in the August heat we had just the one prize category rather than the normal two (118 and 19 - 36). We also hold a 2's competition on Wednesdays and today there were 7 two's in total sharing the "pot". Elizabeth Robertson, Ken Robertson and Geoff Biggerstaff had one each but Dave Pulling and guest Jamie Conway doubled their share by scoring two two's in their rounds. The result: In 4th place on a back 9 count back was Geoff Biggerstaff with a crafty 36 points, 3rd was Pete Dunn also on 36 points and in second place was "back 9" Joyce McClusky with 37 points. The winner with 40 points was handicap secretary Bryan Neal - cut point 8!! Friday's game was a novelty Red Tees for all. Teams of 4 played off the ladies tees, ladies were given 3 shots to their handicaps and the scoring was all 4 on tees 1,9,10 and 18 and best 2 of 4 on the rest. In second position was team Geoff Biggerstaff, Road Doel, Alan Douglas and Peter Dunn with 110 points - why they didn't get a lady player allocated to their team is a bit of a mystery and maybe that was the reason team Brian Townsend, Allan McClusky, Joyce McClusky and Bryan Neal won the day with 112 points. The 2nd mystery of Friday was why "Back 9" Joyce only contributed 3 points on the last 9 holes?? Bryan K. Neal

‘In form’ Marg posts best score of the day at Villamartin Continuing to maintain a high turnout, 34 members and 6 guests made their way to Villamartin for SMGS’s monthly visit to this popular venue. Whilst greens were relatively slow, as they seem to be at most tracks at the moment, the course was in excellent condition. Accompanied by raucous parakeets which seem to be thriving around the course and which seem to be enjoying the hot and humid temperatures, scores were very decent with 6 players bettering their handicaps, with special mention going to Marg Birtwistle for the best score of the day and a further demonstration of a return to form.
on count back, Captain Phil de Lacy. Gold Category: 4th Steve Higgins (33), 3rd new granddad Bjorn Pettersson (35), 2nd Darren Hancock (36), and 1st, as last month, blob tin/football card specialist Tony Smale with 38 points. Best front 9 and not in the prizes went to Mick Cook with 19 points, best back nine to John Osborne with 17. The Abacus was won by John Parker, with the true winner defaulting on a very good bottle of wine by departing early.
The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following:
Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Joost Boelhouwer (6), Tony Smale (9), Mick Cook (13) and Joost’s dad Theo with a superb shot on 17.
Bronze Category: 4th Phil Birtwistle (32), 3rd Ian Parkinson (34), 2nd Norman Padmore (38), and 1st, once again in the winner’s circle and the day’s best score, Marg Birtwistle with 39 points.
The two best guest prizes went to Alan Ewing (32), just beaten in to 2nd place by winner Ian Hardy with 33.
Silver Category: 4th new grand mum Eva Pettersson (35), 3rd Ken Flaherty (37), 2nd John Aitchison (38) and 1st, also with 38 and winning
Our thanks go to the staff at Villamartin golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging
‘Hot scor es’ keep pace with summer temperatur es as La Marina’s Thoroughgood wins again The record breaking hot spell shows no signs of abating yet but neither do the ’hot scores’ being recorded by our members! The high points totals achieved by many of the day’s players were over 30 and more than a few were 36 or more. The course was in really good condition but, like many courses at this time of the year, the greens were slower. Green keepers like to protect them from the blazing sun. Fortunately members are wise enough to protect themselves and an enjoyable round was had by all. The high temperatures meant that members were even more appreciative of the buffet and cold drinks awaiting them at La Marina Sports Centre and we thank Paolo and Helena for their kind hospitality After a few weeks rollover the 2’s competition was finally one by Alan Craig. It was a close call as he

Our latest venture took us to the evergreen and great course, Alenda, where we played a challenge match against Claptons. 26 players attended, with 3 four balls from each team competing for the challenge trophy, which was kindly donated by Bill Martin (a member of both society's) What a great day we had the competition was intense but friendly and Claptons just came out on top with only 3 points between the teams, so well done Claptons and we look forward to the return match in the future. Back at The Med Bar on El Raso we enjoyed a nice buffet and the presentation took place, Other winners on the day were, nearest the pins on the par 3's G Strowther B Martin (2) and B Abbott, nearest the pin in two was Bill Martin, nearest in three was G Strowther. Runner up was G Strowther and although Claptons seem to have cleaned up, the winner on the day with a fine 38 points was our very own Michelle Evans. WATER ‘ON TAP’ AND MUCH ‘Tit for Tat’ as Murcia start charging APPRECIATED AT ALTORREAL pensioners for fishing licenses This week saw the first round of the two heats for the Clubs knock out Trophy, held at the El Bosquet complex. These are 4 hour matches fished from 9.00 to 1.00pm. The qualifiers from this heat are: Dave Hoare with 5.72kg, Pete Kerr with 4.14 kg and Jackie Breslin with 3.46kg. There will not be a heat next week the 13th August, but round 2 will be on Thursday the 20th with the final on the 27th of this month. There has been an ongoing problem with Anglers trying to get free Pensioners fishing licences in MURCIA. The Club has phoned the Hunting and Fishing department of the Medio Ambiente who are the department responsible for the issue of licences to find out from the horses mouth what is going on. Their reply was: “As the Valencia government has started charging Pensioners living in Murcia for the Valencia licences, we are now charging Pensioners living in the Valencia region for Murcia licences.” The cost of a 5 year Murcia licence is about 76€. Residents of Murcia who are Pensionistas will continue to receive free fishing licences in Murcia- this is until further notice. The next Quiz night will be on Tuesday the 11th of August starting at 7.30pm. Cost is 1€ per person and teams of up to 6 can take partOur next Sunday meeting will be on the 16th of August with the Committee at 10.30 followed by the General meeting at11.00. The Clubs home is at the Bar El Alto La Dolores which is situated just off a roundabout on the N332 between La Mata and Guardamar. Last Wednesday the Society travelled inland from the City of Murcia to play Altorreal which offers golf societies value for money deals. The course was in good condition and a very thoughtful gesture made by the management of the course was to provide chilled bottles of water not only to start with but a couple of times more during the round. A very nice meaningful and well appreciated touch. The turn out was low as it generally is in August as many members return to the UK for cooler weather and some prefer not to play in the intense heat. However, there are still quite a few “mad dogs” & Englishmen & Scotsman” around who don´t let the weather put them off a round of golf. The competition was an individual stableford with 18 members contesting it accompanied by 2 guests who were a bit younger than the rest and played off handicaps of scratch and 3. In first place was recently joined member, young “Rock & Roller” Bert Morl who did well on the dance floor today and came in with 31 points pipping, on
C/B, Bonnie Scotsman Charlie Wallace who´s golf is improving since he had a new knee. In third place on 29 points was Mancunian and Man United fanatic Big John Dunnion with 29 points. In fourth place with 28 points was the effervescent and sometimes too talkative Darryll Wright. The nearest the Pins were won by Kenny McKinnon who had 2, Gordon McGregor, Chris Nield, Bert Morl and Tony Patterson. The two guests Richard Giles and Kenny McKinnon came in with 33 and 32 respectively. In the annual knockout competition John Dunnion beat Iron Brian Smith. There was no winner of the 2´s so the pot is carried forward to the next game. For a bit of fun, one of the four-balls played a pairs better-ball, England v Scotland and the Scottish pairing of Gordon McGregor and his son-in-law Kenny McKinnon beat the English pairing of Darryll Wright and Richard Giles 2 and 1 in a close encounter. I think the score when England play Scotland in the World Cup qualifiers will be a different. The weary golfers returned to the Quesada Country Club for the presentations and a well earned beer or two and a hot and cold buffet kindly laid on by mine hosts. There is a members meeting at the Quesada Country Club on Tuesday 11 August starting at 11.00 am. The next game is an individual stableford for the Summer Cup at Roda on Wednesday 19 August. Anyone in the Quesada area looking to join a very friendly golf society and play golf once a fortnight at a wide variety of courses at very reasonable cost, should contact the Membership Secretary Les Pancott on 966716723.
Blinston debut’s at Lo Romero with a win 16 members of the El Raso Golf Society travelled to Lo Romero on 31 July to play our monthly game.
We
have not played this venue for a couple of years and what a nice surprise. Not crowded and in good condition it was a pleasure to play this challenging course.
Attendance was severely
depleted because of the time of year and members in UK. Nearest the pins was won by; Hole 5 Dave Blinston, Hole 7 Dave Nicholls, Hole 12 Debbie Weedon and Hole 15 Harry Armstrong. Best front today was won by Joy Gray with 18 points and best back by Debbie Weedon with 19 points. Second overall today with 35 points was Tony Wilson and the winner with a splendid 36 points was new member Dave Blinston. After the game we retired to the Olde 9th for repast and refreshments.
Our
next game is at Las Colinas on 31 August. John

Pre Season sees Real Murcia take to Dragon Boat
Real Murcia are currently pre season training at Pinatar Arena prior to getting their Segunda B season underway with a trip to Marbella on 23 August. The club finished at runners up last season but with only one automatic promotion sport they were unable to convert their second place playoff position into promotion to Segunda A. This coming season, new coach
Jose Manuel Aira, a former La Coruna player, who has arrived from managing Racing de Ferrol, says he eyes are firmly placed on finishing the season as champions, anything less will be unthinkable. Well at this stage he certainly has the squad buzzing and amongst his varied pre season training activities the players took to the water last week t the Centre of Marine
Activities in San Pedro del Pinatar. They tried their hand in a Dragon boat, courtesy of Daniel Perez, Councillor the for Sports in San Javier, and with the cooperation of AD Pinatarense. Whilst their performance can best be described as ‘adequate’ the councillor said that we wish them rather more success on the football field.
