DOCTORS SAY THEY WILL DEFY SPANISH GOVERNMENT

From 1 September, doctors working in the public health service in the region of Valencia who object to the removal of free healthcare services for undocumented immigrants will have to attend

to such patients in their own time and without using public facilities, the regional commissioner for health, Nela Garcia, said last week. The announcement comes after the Spanish government said that they will be insisting that some 150,000 immigrants who do not have residency papers will no longer have access to the free medical treatment they have been entitled to on the public health system and that they will be required to contribute 710 € per year if they want any type of healthcare whilst in the country. Over-65s will have to pay double, although pregnant women, minors and those with refugee status will continue to receive free care. So far a total of 77 doctors in the Valencia health system have signed up as conscientious objectors to the new policy. They say that they will continue to offer treatment to any-

one requiring it, at no cost, despite Garcia’s announcement. García said the regional government accepts the concept of conscientious objection but insisted that doctors who wish to continue to provide free healthcare will have to do so out of their own pockets and in their own installations. Andalusia, Asturias and the Basque Country, run by the Socialists; the Canary Islands, controlled by the Canarian Coalition and the Socialists; and CiU Catalan nationalist bloc-run Catalonia have all warned of the dangers that the central government's measure could involve and have pledged to go on guaranteeing healthcare to those people affected. They say that they consider the Government measures to be cruel, harsh and inhuman. So far 900 GP's in the provinces have also signed a petition stating that they Continued on Page 2

Continued from Page One would not be willing to turn anyone away that needed healthcare just because they were not registered with the system. Catalonia has said it will guarantee all outpatient treatment, but is looking into ways to also treat patients who have to be hospitalized whilst Andalusia says it will not rule out appealing to the Constitutional Court if the government legally forces it to start charging. The regions in question account for about half of all the illegal immigrants in Spain. However in Murcia the Ministry of Health has said that immigrants that are not paying into the Spanish social security system but who are suffering from chronic diseases such as cancer or aids will still receive treatment after September 1st when their health cards will become invalid. They will still be able to receive treatment through the accident and emergency departments throughout the Region but they will also be forced to contribute to their health care by paying something into the system. The amount that the regional government is going to require from illegal immigrants or immigrants that find themselves in a situation that they are neither receiving free health care due to reciprocal agreements with their own countries or are not paying into the Spanish system, has yet to be decided. Andalusia, Asturias, the Basque Country, the Canary Islands and Catalonia have voiced objections to the central government's imposition of the removal of free healthcare, warning of the possible dangers to public health as a result.

WORKING FOR EMAUS CHILDREN Cris Jonson and C a t h r y n Glennon of E M A U S Children’s Homes Charity came into the Exite Radio studio a couple of weeks ago to let us know about their new role as the charity’s fund raising cocoordinators in the Costa Blanca South area. They started by telling us about how they became involved, purely by chance as it happens. Cris, a musician, was asked to teach music to the children at the home in Elche by the current coordinators Annette and Dave English. The pair visited the home and ever since then they have become more and more involved with the children and the staff. Recently, with the help of some wonderful volunteers, they redecorated the accommodation and dining room and have managed to secure some very generous sponsorship. Cris and Cathryn told us about the tremendous work that has been done by Annette and Dave to bring the home from its dismal state to the current level of warmth and kindness and without their help over the past 8 years, who knows what condition it would currently be in.

Virtually everything that the home receives is from Ex-Pats. There is no funding from either the National or the Valencian Government, who withdrew funding 12 months ago. The children rely 100% on donations and it would not be wrong to say that 99% of those donations are from the British community here in Spain. Cathryn went on to talk about `The Monday Club’. This was her idea to help those children who have nowhere to go to during the summer months. Cris and Cathryn teach music on a Monday and after the lesson take between 3 and 6 children out for the evening. The venues visited so far have ranged from the house of a lady (Trudy) who allows them to use the pool and orders in pizza, icecream etc; to cinema and bowling visits. The funding for these evenings comes from individuals like Trudy and Robert, who have funded a night for the children to visit the cinema. They finished by telling us that the kindness shown by people is overwhelming, especially considering the current economic climate and politely asked that the support be continued. For items to be donated please telephone:- Cris Jonson on 647 149 777. For monetary donations please use the PayPal Account:elchechildrenshome@gmail.com Current Needs: Obviously we will accept any donations. However, there are certain items that we need at the moment and as my teachers always used to say, “don’t ask, don’t get”. We still need the following items: Toiletries for all ages (0-18 years), Shaving Razors, Female Hygiene Products, Rice, Pasta, Meat, Nit Cream/Shampoo, Toilet Paper. These can all be left in the Leader/Exite radio Offices and we will pass them on. Due to the fantastic amount of quality clothing that has been donated recently we now need storage items for these clothes. Therefore:- Chests of Drawers, Bedside Cabinets, Small/Portable Wardrobes.

EMAUS DONATIONS UPDATE The EMAUS Childrens Homes have received many wonderful donations over the past 8 years and these donations are still coming in to this day. Thank you to all who have donated anything at all to the cause of the children. Special thanks to those listed who have helped recently:Dave, Emma, Nigel, Steve, Lorraine and Janet for helping us to paint the accommodation and dining room of the home. Members of RODS and REELS & ABBEY ANGLERS fishing clubs visited the children’s home in Elche and donated 30 new pillows and shower heads/hoses. They also

handed over 300 euro (pictured) to allow the staff to buy each child a new pair of shoes. Many thanks also go to them for their donation of the paint and accessories to carry out the task of painting the home and their ongoing support. Niara, James, Tony, Steve and Manuel. Icelands – La Marina for their donation and ongoing help and support. Robert of Solar Guard &Trudy, for their donations to `The Monday Club’

FOLLOWING RED CARD ROY Working in the presence of the greats is not unusual for us at The Leader, after all, being the best is what sets us aside. But, when a wealth of other people are behind one of our team, it is no accident that he gains a following from Many of the biggest names in the UK media. Already, “Red Card” Roy McDonough has been featured extensively in the Daily Mirror, Birmingham Post, Sunday Mercury, Colchester Evening Gazette, Southend Evening Echo, Essex County Standard and a 3-page spread in a national football magazine called Backpass, a 6-page spread in

Colchester United´s matchday magazine against Portsmouth and full pages in ALL Southend United matchday programmes this season. Why, because that is how keen the football fraternity are to hear about the life of one of football's most notorious players, who accumulated more red cards than anybody else in the history of the game and whose story is now out in print in bookstores across the UK and already becoming a top seller on retail website Amazon. On the subject of being a “top seller”, that animal competitiveness of a professional footballer is precisely why Roy has now transferred his strategy from the football field to that of the ‘home

sector’ and has successfully managed to match up hundreds of clients with the property of their dreams and desires, with The Leader Property. Now though, Roy is leaving the property world in the hands of his team here in Spain, whilst he pops over to the UK to carry on his book promotion, and no doubt pick up a few more potential property buyers at the same time. If you want to catch up with Roy in his brief UK tour, he will be on Talk Sport with Alan Brazil on the 7th September, as well as B.B.C Essex at lunchtime on that same day. With more interviews lined up with the Daily Mail, Sunday People, Sky Sports and Soccer A.M. the Telegraph and the Guardian, not to mention the fact he will be appearing on West Midlands radio whilst also carrying out book signings at Waterstone´s in Southend and Colchester high street shops, during the first two weeks of September. Finally, Roy will also be appearing for two nights at Southend United and Colchester United football clubs, with John Motson, launching the book at Southend with further launches at Birmingham City Football Club and Walsall Football club

coming up. Again, both of these clubs are featuring the book already in their matchday programmes this season. So you can easily see why we are in the presence of greatness, but you can be too. Whether you're looking to buy or sell your property, then you know can trust The Leader in the field of property sales, and trust that the only red card Roy will be holding these days in the one that says “Sold”, as he looks after you in the same way he looked after his team and fellow players on the football field..

Ex-Pat Stories To Feature On UK Radio Samantha Pidoux

We all chose to leave the life we had and start again here in Spain and however different our reasons for doing so, those reasons have long been a talking point amongst us ex-pats and those further afield, with the European media fascinated by the mass migration to the warmer climes of Spain. The latest interest has come from one journalist from Lincoln who has spent the last four weeks on the Costa Blanca interviewing ex-pats about the highs and lows of life in Spain for a special series to air on Siren FM, a community radio station for Lincolnshire, originating from the University of Lincoln. Samantha Pidoux is a learning

advisor for the Lincoln School of Journalism and after spending many a summer visiting her Grandmother who lives in Moraira, she pitched the idea to her colleagues at Siren FM about doing a series on ex-pats who had moved to the Costa Blanca, how their life had turned out and how the recession had hit them. “The brief was to find stories about Brits living here, the positives and negatives and seek out the communities of ex-pats (which one of my interviewees called 'Costa England') and see if they are living the Spanish dream or if the recession has meant they are cutting their loses and moving back.” The 28 year-old has spoken with 8 different people across the region

from religious groups to those working in education and business, including the deputy Mayoress of Teluada and Moraira Sylvia Tattnel. Despite the ups and downs it seems everyone moved for the same thing – a better way of life. “The sunshine it seems, is a mega pull and they would not give that up.” The work throughout August was the culmination of weeks of hard work and research prior to her trip and the stories will be broadcast on Siren FM and possibly on Euronet, an online radio station. So no matter how hard life may get, it seems for many of you, as long as the sun shines in Spain, it makes everything slightly more bearable.

BACK TO SCHOOL COSTS RISE Summer is coming to an end and thoughts are turning to the new school year about to start and for families in the region, back to school is a costly business with the average expenditure forecast for the return to school of Valencian families between 300 and 700 . That's according to a survey of around 200 families made by the Valencian Association of Consumers and Users (AVACU). The figures are marked by the increase of VAT on different items, which will cause an increase in the expenditure of families with school-age children, according to a statement from the association. In the case of private schools, for more than 39% of families disbursement stands at around 700€ and 1,000€. Furthermore, over 83% said that the VAT increase will mean a significant increase in the costs of the return to school, and that the tax rate in school supplies increases to 21%, to which must be added the increase on clothing, uniforms and footwear. With respect to the item with the highest payout represented in both public and charter schools, about 50% said that textbooks were the biggest expense followed the canteen and lunch payments. In the case of private school, the largest bill corresponds obviously to the monthly payment of attending the school, followed by the text books. The increases mean that one in three school-age children have serious difficulties in getting the necessary school textbooks ready to take back to school this month, given the economic situation of many families and the inability to bear the expense. This has been confirmed to Efe presidents of the Spanish Confederation of Association of Parents of Students (CEAPA ) and the Association Giner, Jesus Maria Sanchez and Jose Luis Pazos, respectively, who have made a rough estimate of what can happen in the academic year 2012-2013 given the large number of families who “are not even in receipt of dole and living on the 450€.” Pazos, who is president of the association in Madrid, recalled that precisely in the Community of Madrid this figure (450€) approaches the average spending a family with two children has to spend for the new course text books and curriculum material. The spokesman stressed that the price of books has gone up this year by an average of 2.39% which

is attached to the VAT increase from 4 to 21% in the case of school supplies, essential use in classrooms. According to a study inside the book trade 2011, prepared by the Federation of Publishing Guilds of Spain and made public last Monday, the average expenditure per pupil in Spain last year was 111.12€ which ranges from 130,07€ euros on average for a primary school student and 70.81€ for a child enrolled in kindergarten. According to this figure of 111.12€ average expenditure, Pazos said it is “not real” and follows a study by the publishers moved to Madrid “to justify the amount that the regional government granted aid to families in the purchase of textbooks.” Both CEAPA president and President of Association Giner agree that this course the AMPA of the different colleges, public and private schools will be forced to promote alternatives such as flea markets or borrowing books from the families themselves. AVACU has also launched a series of recommendations to address the return to school, recommending that books are re-used and passed down and it is suggested you contact the school's parent association to see if it is possible to exchange or donate books. They also advise that you should contact the Department of Education and the municipalities for aid for the purchase of books, school meals or transportation, and not be swayed by advertising deals and discounts, but compare and carefully consider the fine print and buy depending on the value.

Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few'. His words truly describe a heroic episode that we should never forget. This special Church Service, starts at 11 am and is open to anyone who wishes to remember those who gave their lives or were involved in this significant part of history that helped secure the freedoms, many of us take for granted today."

‘NO CASE’ AS BARRERA IS DECLARED ‘INNOCENT’ “It has cost me 4 years of my life, fighting every day, not sleeping and suffering every day by day, night by night.” That is how Manuel Barrera describes his life since October 2008 when he was arrested and accused of embezzling public funds. At the time Barrera was an elected councillor in the San Fulgencio Ayuntamiento, representing his party AIM. He was accused of taking 11,000€ that was missing from the council coffers in relation to the summer fiestas. Barrera constantly denied any wrongdoing but he was soon vilified and his two fellow AIM councillors, Brits Mark Lewis and Mick Blake, soon changed alliances and distanced themselves from their leader. On 19th June 2012 he received notice from the courts that there was no case to answer and he would not stand trial for appropriation of public funds. Barrera was, at last, cleared of the charge he had so vehemently denied for all these years. “Why had it taken so long?” He asks, believing the answer lies with the administration at the time, particularly with Mayoress Trinidad Martinez, who wanted him out of politics and to make sure he couldn't stand in the next elections, “They all made false denuncias against me” says Barrera, “but there is still 4000€ missing from the fiesta money, why are the prosecutors not continuing their investigations and looking at where that money went.” The money was collected by Barrera's fellow councillor who said he handed it to Barrera, a claim he denies. “The Town Hall received the same letter I had saying there is no case against me, they had 5 days to respond or protest the findings but no one put an objection in. Why doesn't the new Mayor Carlos Ramirez Sasano go to the court to ask where the missing 4000€ is?” It was not the only charge against Barrera. He was also accused of accepting a bribe from alleged property developers of 5000€ after video footage was leaked of him receiving the cash from businessmen in a Valencia restaurant. The claims hit the headlines and resulted in the whole government team of San Fulgencio, except for Lewis and Blake, being arrested with Barrera claiming he was set up. They were all later released but Barrera believes it has all been a big elaborate scandal against him to soil his reputation and to throw him out of politics. “I have spent the last 4 years fighting to clear my name and on 12th December 2011 I had my first hit. But first I have to go back a bit. On 29th March 2011 the no. 3 judge of Orihuela issued a letter from corruption prosecutor for Alicante Felipe Briones, saying I was still under investigation and they wanted to formerly accuse me of taking the bribe. When they communicated that to me with my lawyer we didn't agree and we made our allegations and we wrote 8 pages explaining our case and everything. Why was everyone else free and

I'm accused when I'm the victim?” Barrera explains that a 550 page case document was sent to the Elche High Court from Orihuela saying he needed to be tried by a jury but when the case was looked in to

and the papers read it was decided that Barrera would not stand trial and he received notice from the President of the High Court in December last year. “There was no case against me, if they accused me again it would have to be in Valencia as that is where it happened, there is no crime in Alicante province, the 5000€ was not proved to be a bribe, they were not from Alicante or San Fulgencio, so why was it a bribe? They are a supposed group of businessmen it is only people working from the Town Hall trying to make my reputation disappear.” It was a welcome Christmas present for the accused who said he was finally able to breathe and relax a little. He wanted to shout the news from the rooftops but it is only now he has made public the news saying “In Spain we have a saying, 'don't sell the skin of the bear until you kill it'.” For him the fight continues. The prosecutor once again appealed but the papers are all now being sent to Valencia where Barrera hopes to receive greater acceptance of his innocence. “At the moment the accusation in Orihuela has been cleared but I want to now clear my name in Valencia also and prove I have no political interest there. In my personal opinion it is not 100% closed but I hope it will be by Autumn/Winter.” It has been a long slog for Manuel Barrera who says he spent the first year trying to tell everyone of his innocence but soon realised no one believed him and silenced himself. He says he was forced to stay indoors and shop elsewhere away from his home in urbanisation La Marina, with El Mundo newspaper reporting at the time that Barrera was 'afraid to go outside' due to “harassment and persecution to him and his family” from the head of the Local Police at the time. Now, speaking from his home to the Leader, the very first English newspaper to interview Barrera back in May 2005, he says his job the last 4 years has been simply defending himself, spending he believes, around 22,000€ on lawyers and barristers fees “only to recover my innocence...but the bigger scandal is coming to them.”

HELP FOR FAMILIES FROM TORREVIEJA’S EDUCATION DEPARTMENT BY EVA TEJEDOR On Friday, the Municipal Council and opposition parties approved a motion urging the Government to take charge of the improvement works and hasten the speed of renovation works at the IES La Laguna, institute. The council also announced that works are well advanced on the Acequión school saying "the intention of the construction company is to finish in August next year, so that the center can be operational during 2013-2014." Meanwhile, the council are awaiting budget approval to continue upgrades and classroom improvements to Immaculate College. School transport is a big issue of concern for many families in Torrevieja. Once again the municipality has plans to subsidize the school bus system although they have to wait until school resumes on September 7 to find out the actual needs and requirements and to design bus routes accordingly. Although Torrevieja has one of the largest multicultural spreads of students speaking different first languages, the council noted that the system is able to cope with the special requirements at the moment and that while it is true that in some schools the problem is greater than others, they expect no problems in this area. Of major concern to many parents were last year’s strikes against education cuts that were mainly focused on cutting teacher numbers and support. Dani Plaza, the Councilor for Education stated, "The rise of ratios (student to teacher) will not affect anything in Torrevieja, at least at Primary level, which is what begins now. At the moment there is a classroom ratio of 23 students, not reaching the 30 maximum which is the same as last year." High school rations are expected to around the 30-33 students mark, but well short of the maximum of 42, One change to the school dining program is that there is a possibility of allowing children to stay in school at lunchtime with their own ‘lunch-boxes’. Once again, the council is awaiting clarification on this

matter as the issue of staff to monitor those not using the dinning rooms is another budget factor that must be figured in. Plaza said "It will be September when we take action ... we're excited to see what they decide to do, then see how we can help families in need and how we can provide in the centers." Daniel Plaza noted that they are still "waiting" becuase of a lack of decision-making by regional institutions to find out how budgets and staffing will affect education, He added "yes there is a ‘cushion of money’ in the city to help families, for dining and transportation aid, Remember that we are the only city in the Valencian Community to offer this additional aid.” Torrevieja’s Councillor for Education, Daniel Plaza

BANK DIRECTORS' WAGES FIXED The Spanish government has announced that they will be fixing the maximum wage those directors of banks that have received public help to rescue their troubled financial institution at 600,000 per annum. Those that are unlucky or lucky enough to work for banks that have been intervened by the state will see their wages set at a maximum of 300,000 € per annum. This fixed wage limit has been set as an incentive to try and encourage those in charge of the financial institutions to try and get themselves into a position where they can repay their debts to the state. Once the total debt is repaid the limitations on wages will be lifted.

Our commitment to providing the highest quality products, coupled with a customer service which is second-to-none has made us the market leader here in your area.

but it only works best with UPVC profile. Imagine all the noise from busy roads and loud neighbours gone. Turn your home in to a comfortable and quiet place where you can enjoy the things you do.

We believe our customers deserve the best and we can now offer you complete peace-of-mind when choosing the supplier for your new Windows, Doors, Conservatories or Glass Curtains. Here at THE LEADER HOME IMPROVEMENTS, we offer both aluminium and uPVC products which allows us to always provide a solution which suits all budgets. Currently we have some GREAT OFFERS on uPVC installations, and if you order your new windows and doors today. So why choose uPVC? uPVC offers a number of characteristics. These include: Warmer & Drier In a typical Spanish home, more than 50% of heat loss can come from inadequate aluminium or timber windows. With our high quality UPVC double glazed windows you can cut down that heat loss to an absolute minimum whilst also cutting down those ever-increasing power bills and keeping your place warm and dry. Many Spanish

www.yourlocalnewspaper.info

homes also suffer from mould and moisture as a result of condensation. All our products are made from high quality, German designed UPVC profile, and unlike aluminium or timber it does not conduct heat or cold. There is an effective drainage system that allows water to escape easily. Combined with our 28mm insulated double glazed units the condensation can be decreased up to 5 times. Secure Home security provides a great benefit – peace of mind. To feel safe at home is very important to every home-owner. That is why we are including a Multi-Point Locking System in every window and door that we install. Our UPVC sliding and Tilt & Turn windows also benefit from key-locking handles. Our UPVC doors also incorporate a 7-Point locking system for added protection. Quieter Are you tired of that loud noise from outside? Does it prevent you from sleeping at night? With our UPVC windows, you can silence the noise from the outside by 80% (compared to single glazing). Double glazing is a powerful barrier against noise,

Designed for Convenience & Style The core of every Tilt&Turn window is its hightech internal hardware. It enables effortless turning and tilting of the window sash with a single handle operation. Turn the handle through 90° and the window 'tilts' inwards, hinged at the bottom with a stay at the top to allow a free flow of air for draught-free ventilation. Turn the handle a further 90° and the window 'turns' fully inwards, hung on to the side for maximum ventilation, more fresh air and ease of cleaning. Our Sliding Windows are very popular for their convenience. Sliders are recommended everywhere where inward or outward opening windows are not desired. When the sash is open it slides in to the window and does not take any space inside or outside the living area. This means you can use the area next to the window for anything you like. The new modern locking mechanism ensures smooth operation, and as a result you can easily open sliders with only one hand. Outstanding Warm Windows quality insures there will be no gaps left when the window is closed, so you can enjoy the maximum noise reduction. The result is a dry, mould free and healthy home. FINALLY THE CHOICE IS CLEAR!

Dr Ken and Mrs Susie Wildey, Mosa Trajectum “We were looking for two key things in our new windows; good quality and good service. We are pleased with both – and for us, with limited Spanish, the benefit of having all communications in English was an added bonus! All contacts (eg texts/emails) were dealt with speedily – so communication rated an ‘A’ plus. We would recommend ‘the Choice is Clear’ for good quality at a fair price:- having seen our windows fitted, our neighbours are already planning to upgrade their flimsier windows with a higher quality specification from ‘the Choice is Clear…” Mr & Mrs Hepton, Benijofar, Alicante

‘We are extremely happy with the service provided by your company. Both the products and service received were second to none’

LÍNEA DIRECTA ADVISES YOU HOW TO ACT IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT Línea Directa Insurance advises you of the steps to follow in case of a road accident in Spain. Call the emergency number: 112. They will co-ordinate the procedure and will ask you in detail about the circumstances of the accident. Remain calm at all times. Switch on the emergency lights and if the state of the vehicle permits, remove the vehicle from the road, in order to avoid delays and further accidents, to the extent possible. Signal the accident location. Before stepping out of the car, put on your high-visibility jacket, which is compulsory, and place the emergency triangles correctly. The first must be placed about 50 metres behind the car in the direction of the traffic, and the second about 100m. If someone is seriously injured, never try to move them, except if in danger of fire or imminent explosion. Cover the injured person, keep them calm and wait for the emergency services to arrive. If the circumstances of the location allow, always fill in the European accident report, which is an essential document for speeding up the procedures and handling between the insurance companies. If you have any doubt about how to do this, don’t hesitate to call your insurance company.

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING As many a driver goes about the daily routine of travelling from A to B, we can all accept that we don´t always drive within the confines of the law. Whether it´s that sneaky 5 kilometres an hour over the limit or not fully coming to a halt at the “STOP” sign, or even the occasional acknowledgement that we know we are doing something seriously wrong, but it´s ok because there are no Guardia about. Well, it might be time to think again! As you go about your journey, your vigilance may be somewhat tuned in to watching for the green and white vehicles, with men and women from the Tráfico department of the Guardia Civil, waiting to catch us out and, some might say, earn a quick few euro off the back of our driving infractions. IN fact, although the data is never officially released, it is believed that traffic violations bring in over 400 million euro in revenue. But where does our own surveillance end? Do we ever consider that Big Brother is watching, but not from the roadside, or the unmarked car, but from above, in one of 18 helicopters that are operated by the DGT traffic department, in seven bases across Spain, with the single aim of patrolling the road network to catch us out. In 2011, these helicopters conducted a total of 5,729.50 hours of flying times, mostly during the day, with only 107.04 of those being conducted at night. During their operations, they filed reports for traffic violations against 7,680 vehicles, for offences from crossing white lines, to using a mobile phone whilst driving. But, as is the case with everything technological, things are evolving. Later this year, the helicopters will also be fitted with a new speed monitoring system, “Project Pegasus”, a radar system in which the DGT has been working on since 2006. Having chosen the target vehicle, the system fires a laser pulse every three seconds that it obtains a path through its various changes of position. By adding the time variable, the system obtains the average speed of an error ratio between 0 and 1%. So, as well as your alertness of road level inspections, keep an eye out for these yellow and blue buzzards that might be flying above you. Of course, if you drive within the letter of the law, you have nothing to worry about, but if you don´t, just remember that Big Brother IS watching.

to spend on their children, and want them to look good. Many children that I see here are dressed in fashionable, and I assume expensive, designer clothes and so a designer cut and style is the next obvious step. After all, the family dog goes to the pet parlour for a cut and trim, so who can begrudge Carlos or Maria from having the best possible hair styling in a place that understands children, which is also a happy and non-threatening place to visit? Seeing this wonderland for children, complete with a vast array of drinks, ice creams, sweets and designer accessories, made me think back to my own childhood and the times that I dreaded going for a haircut at the barbers in the Lincolnshire village where I lived. How I hated visiting Potter’s, with its heavy door, dark wood panelled walls and strange smells. The queues of grumpy, smelly old men, many of whom were smoking cigarettes or pipes, sat on wooden benches waiting their turn for a shave or haircut. The heady, sickly smell of Brylcreem, combined with tobacco smoke made for a heady, vomit-inducing mix for a young child. It was always a mixed blessing when my turn finally came, and I was beckoned forward and strapped into what look like a dentist’s chair and shrouded in a huge white sheet. Mr Potter continued talking to the smelly, grumpy old men whilst he operated, cut

and fiddled with my hair with his enormous pair of scissors and comb. Mr Potter was probably a very nice man, but as he never spoke to me, I really cannot say for sure. The final insult was the thick globule of that ghastly, sticky Brylcreem ladled out of its white pot into my hair before I escaped from the chair and was directed to a bench to wait until someone came to collect me. The strange thing is that I cannot remember being taken or collected; I just remember being there. It is a memory that haunts me to this day and one of the reasons why, as soon as I became responsible for my own hairdressing actions, I refused to set foot in another barber’s shop, and much preferred unisex salons. Well, at least they had no Brylcreem on the premises! This was until a few weeks ago when my own delightful hairdresser was on holiday and I needed a quick cut. I foolishly entered a barber’s shop in the town where I live. As I walked inside the dark panelled shop, memories came flooding back of troubled times long gone. Along the walls were seated a similar group of miserable looking old men sitting on wooden benches waiting their turn that I

remembered so well. Two ‘dentists’ chairs filled the far side of the room, whilst two barbers in white coats cut, poked and prodded their victims' hair with large scissors. I made my excuses and swiftly fled to the nearest bar for a coffee and brandy. Thinking about the new kid’s salon in Las Palmas, with Carlos sitting in the fire engine and Maria on the horse eating sweets and listening to music that they liked, made me realise just how lucky they were. If I had been them, I would have chosen the shocking pink sports car! ‘Mike Probert talks Golf Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Doomsday Has Arrived By the time you have read this article I guess that you will have already tried to fill the freezer and petrol tank only to discover the impact of the vast increase in IVA (VAT) imposed by the Spanish Government on a country already on it’s knees and probably just to pay for the mistakes made by politician’s in previous years. More importantly you will now also discover the FULL impact of the tax increases on that most treasured possession – YOUR GOLF!!!Some of the course have been a little slow in providing new price information simply because they have been challenging the increases and hoping for a U-turn by officials BUT as their thinking is along the lines of “if you can afford a hobby such as golf you can afford to pay a little more for the privilege” you can forget any chance of that happening. The courses have all handled the situation in numerous way but congratulations go to Altorreal, La Peraleja and Las Ramblas who have made NO INCREASES in their prices. I am sure that the biggest impact will be a narrower selection of courses and when things have settled down a little some of the course may have to have a little re-think on their pricing strategy BUT only time will tell. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. The deals shown in the table are some of the best currently available to you.

SAN JAVIER GS - EL VALLE The El Valle golf course is always a treat to play so with return there this week to play a Team joker format and a great day was had by all the course was in great condition and the second cut off the fairway was not the place to end up just long enough to make find the ball a bit tricky. Then we had one player go in the water with one leg up to is knee and played the last 6 holes with a soggy foot for the in depth story ask Mr Gallard next time you see him on course. In my four ball we had one player who took more shots on the green then it took him to get on there when he tree putted we all cheered, But a day everyone enjoyed with good banter. It was a win for the golden oldies winning by 6 Points our captain was once again on the winning team I think people will start talking soon but he also had the help from the only lady playing on the day well done Joan. DOUG MADDISON MEMORIAL TROPHY- TORRE GOLF SOCIETY Donated by Barratt Homes in Spain - ALICANTE GOLF It was a welcome return to Alicante Golf for this annual event, it could be said a warm welcome but that would be and understatement as it was hot, hot, hot, in 2010 it rained and we politely asked Doug if he could have a word up there for better weather, he did but is now somewhat over doing it! But we will not be asking for as change if this is Dougie’s track record we could get floods It was good to see a good turnout for this competition and there were perhaps among the prizes should have been loads of ice as it was really hot Alicante Golf, laid on breakfast Spanish style to equip us for the golf ahead, but I wish they had supplied some big fans around the course, to keep us cool as well as strong. From the score board the heat affected a majority of the players; with the few hardy ones scoring well (must have been drinking the water dry from the water fountains around the course). Tony Chandler “Mr Consistent” won in 2010 and was second last year and was up there again coming in third with another 30+ points The results were: 1st: Ivie Davies 39 points 2nd: David Jones 34 points, 3rd: Tony Chandler 33 points There were three Nearest The Pins but only two were won, in fact only three players got onto the greens of Hole 3 and 17. So the prizes were shared around the one other that got on the green and other winners. NT Pins; Hole 3. David Jones Hole 6: Non Hole 12: Robert Scott Ivie Davies will be having a handicap cut of 0.9 shots now 13.6 Exact

Handicap Thank you to Marife and Madeline for their assistance as always with a smile and Rafa for having the course in good playing condition as always. Our next game is 3rd September at El Plantio. If you wish to play, guests are always welcome or require more information on The Torre Golf Society then contact the Secretary Ivie Davies either by email golfdavies@gmail.com or telephone 669 211 410 The photo below shows Vince Lannon presenting the Doug Maddison Trophy to Ivie Davies

HAPPY DAYS G.S. AT RODA We met at Roda for our Presidents (Steve) Trophy game, the course was in perfect condition, what a lesson to some of our local courses, and the greenkeepers. We played a pairs Texas and as expected our Capt (Chris Blown) scooped the pot, although with our favourite "oldie" Dave "the master" Naylor to guide him, the result was never in doubt. Results as follows, 1st. Chris Blown and Dave Naylor,(63.25) Steve Dixon & Jeff Luke (66.50) 3rd Fred Noakes & Ronnie Mac (67) 4th Kedrick Rhodes & Ken Farrow (68.25) N.T.Ps. hole 2/13 Chris Blown, 7,Dave Naylor, 11, Fred Noakes. We returned to Marinasol restaurant (cabo roig) for the presentation by our President (Steve Dixon) where we all (over 50) enjoyed the subsided Bar B Q. which was cooked to perfection by Dave, Alan & Ramon, & served by the lovely front of house ladies, Paige, Hanna, Charlie, Claire, Janine, Jane & beth. We would like to thank Steve who provided a bottle of wine for every member and also the good music by Terry Jay ( a good bloke, plays golf as well ) Next Game 11th sept, Payments at Marinasol on mon 10th at 5-6.30p.m. We said good bye to Dominic and his family, (he is back in oct ) this will give us time to save up to pay his winnings. Happy Golfing Robin (the scribe) Adams.

Gathering at Alfies Bar at 07:45 cleared away some cobwebs, but the general talk was the weather. A nice breeze and, the temperature staying around 30, would be just right. So, off to Roda GC went 14 members and 5 guests to contest our August meeting. On arrival, we were informed that the tee times had been moved and, we were starting 20 minutes later than published! Never mind, the signs were good, as the temp hadn't risen and there was still a nice wind blowing across the course. As usual we had two 'nearest to the pin' holes, holes 7 and 13 were chosen, and when the markers were brought in at the end of the day, Bob Owens, one of our guests, collected the prize for the 7th and, much to his surprise, Brian Brown was the winner on the 13th. The 18th was picked for the longest drive and, after several good attempts at 'getting it out there', Tony Hall stepped up and blew everybody away. The overall scoring was good and very close but with 35 points, Ian Connell took the runner’s up spot with Michael "the barman" Morris claiming this month’s Trophy with 36 points. As we had 5 guests this month, a prize was given to the best score amongst them and, playing off a 5 handicap and scoring 36 points, Steve Mason was awarded the prize. Everybody agreed that the course was in great condition, a credit to the course staff. Congratulations to the winners, our thanks to Costa Blanca Green Fees for organising the day and, to Alfies Bar for the after match buffet. Our next meeting will be at Saurines de la Torre on Thursday, 27th September, and it is Captain’s Day, the final of the Eclectic Competition and our AGM at

Alfies after the match, so get your names down for the golf and, stay afterwards and have your say at the AGM. Photo of the Winners: Ian Connell, Bob Owens, Steve Mason, Brian Brown, Michael Morris, Tony Hall

In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services At Las Colinas 30th August 2012. For this month’s meeting a group of 33 players visited the established course at Las Colinas taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The weather was superb and the course was in good condition but due to hollow tining we had to play the back nine holes twice BUT to make things interesting we played the second circuit from the BLACK COMPETITION TEES which made scoring difficult on the day. There were some good scores on the day with the winners as follows: 1st – Gavin Parke - 36 points, 2nd – Dave Mason - 35 points 3rd – Mike Probert - 32 points, 4th – Ian Allison – 32 points 5th – Julie Blinston – 31 points Best Front 9 – D Bensley - 20 points, Best Back 9 – J Coffman - 16 points Nearest Pins – M Probert (3),Gavin Parke (2) and Dave Mason After the game we returned to the Lo Marabu, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation. SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB By Janet Thomas AUSTRALIAN PAIRS Sunday saw the final of the internal Australian Pairs competition. It was played between the winners of Group A, Cyril Medley, Linda Plaisted and Tony Sansom and the Group B winners, Joe Dear, Eileen Potts and Jack Jackson. It was very close in the first half of the game and then Jack’s team picked up two threes to lead by 10-5. In the end, however, it was Tony’s team who went from strength to strength, managing to win all but one of the remaining ends and coming out eventual winners at 17 shots to 11. Congratulations to all and many thanks to the Sunday morning players who stayed behind to watch the presentation of medals. CASA MANUEL SUMMER PETANCA Cup Tournament semi-finals by Sue Ward What a fantastic week it was for petanca on the Orihuela Costa. The weather may be hot and humid but the petanca players had to keep their cool and play their socks off (what are socks?) to win a place in the finals of the Summer League Cup Tournament. If anyone wanted to know why the summer league was dubbed 'the friendly games' then they only had to be at the 2 semi-finals that took place this week. They were played with good humour, amusing banter and willing spirits. First to play on Monday were Laguna Vista Diablos vs Peacocks1. All was level after the 4 triples, leaving all to play for in the deciding doubles. Nervous tension began to creep in to both sides, both teams dropping points, however Laguna Vista Diablos managed to scrape through with a 4 - 3 win. In true petanca spirit both teams descended upon the bar afterwards. A very good end to a very good evening. A woollen doll was presented by Peacocks to Laguna Vista Diablos to be played for every time these 2 teams meet. Wednesday saw the other nail biting, thrilling semi at Via park 2 between Los Bandidos and Amapolas. These 2 teams last met only 2 weeks ago in the league and Amapolas had a comfortable 6 - 1 win, would tonight be any different.. Oh Yes!! After the closely fought triples Amapolas were 3 - 1 up, then came the 3 doubles... and Los bandidos won the 1st 13 - 4 and then the 2nd 13 - 3, the gap had closed so the result rested on the last doubles match. It was 21.00 hrs, the street lights were on, darkness had fallen, the coche was barely visible but still the 2 pairs played on surrounded by hordes of excited spectators and a score of 12 - 12. Both sides took the lead and then lost it. Unfortunately there had to be a winner and the cookie didn't crumble Los bandidos's way, their last ball just - only just - failing to reach its target. Amapolas won 4 games to 3. Well done to them. The overwhelming consenus was that the 5 games were well worthy of a grand final let alone a semi. The final will be played on Wednesday 26th September 2012 at Restaurant El Altos de Dolores where it is hoped that all summer league players will attend. Good luck to both teams. Sue Ward

Lucky Santa Pola cling on CD El Campello ................2 BY KEVIN RENDALL Fifteen seconds into this, their first game of the 2012/13 season, Santa Pola opened the scoring and it's just as well they made the most of the celebrations because thereafter, and for most of the first half, they were put under the Campello cosh. A streaky second shortly before the break saw the visitors go in at the break with an undeserved couple-nil lead before the home side pulled one back soon after the break. A clear-cut El Campello penalty restored parity, leaving a well below par Santa Pola with twenty five minutes to survive in order to snatch a point. Just for good measure, two ill-disciplined visitors were sent off following perfectly good refereeing decisions. With no hint of what was to follow, Santa Pola won the toss and kicked-off, immediately, Chiqui fed Botella down the right and, breaking two half-hearted tackles, he surged forward to plant a low shot beneath a startled Roberto in the Campello goal. To their great credit, El Campello reorganised quickly and soon had their guests on the back foot, with blonde striker Kiril causing the Santa Pola back four one or two anxious moments. For all their possession and territorial dominance - play was almost exclusively confined to the Santa Pola half - El Campello lacked both composure and penetration and visiting goalkeeper Pepitiu was barely tested. From early on in the encounter, crunching tackles seemed to be the order of the day, especially in the midfield battle zone, with one, between 'Pola full back Dani and opposing winger Manu, leaving the former hobbling. He wouldn't reappear for the second half. Elsewhere on the pitch, tempers were slowly rising with with words - they didn't seem too friendly exchanged between David and Wata. It's normal to contest a decision but outright stupidity to continue arguing vociferously having just been yellow carded. This indisciplined approach cost Santa Pola their first dismissal when Carlos was sent off on half an hour for refusing to take no for an answer. With half-time approaching and with it the opportunity to cool down a rapidly over-heating encounter, Santa Pola doubled their lead completely against the run of play. With Campello arms raised in anticipation of an offside flag, Adrian looked surprised at being allowed to continue and finished with aplomb from a similar position to that from which his colleague Botella had scored earlier. Half-time 0-2 The goal El Campello deserved arrived seven minutes

Santa Pola CF .................... 2 after the restart and was the pick of the bunch. The lively Kiril beat Monsa down the left with an impressive turn of speed before sending a low flat cross into the Santa Pola penalty area, where, unmarked, Forner smashed home first time. A brilliant one handed Pepitiu save denied El Campello a second when Felix Prieto looked odds on to score shortly after. The miss would prove to be just a stay of execution. When El Campello broke, they did so with swarms of yellow shirts charging forward, on one such occasion, a hopelessly outnumbered Cristian had no option but to scythe down Campello substitute Garcia. As the last man, his sanction was obvious; a straight red and a penalty. Felix Prieto then atoned for his earlier miss by sending Pepitiu the wrong way from the spot to level things. Somehow, a short-handed Santa Pola survived the Campello onslaught and six minutes of stoppage time to claim their first point of the campaign. Full-time 2-2 Truth be told though they were far from impressive and former Algueña coach Antonio Cano, appointed by Santa Pola during the summer, looks to have his work cut out with his new charges, a squad that bears only a passing resemblance to last year's group. ABBEY ANGLING MATCH FISHING NEWS The 2nd round of the Winter League was fished this week on the 28th August. With the water now going down it is leaving over a metre and half of soft gungy mud making access to the waters edge messy and quite difficult. With no wind on the water the fish were reluctant to feed, everyone was praying for the wind to get up and right on queue at 1.15pm the wind started to blow with a vengeance which prompted the fish to start to feed, but the weights were not great.

SUNWORLD MASTERS DARTS - WEEK 10 Week 10 and last of the Sunworld Masters championship rounds. It was academic really, Sam Salt needed not to turn up with Mark Farmer winning all 11 of his matches, a feat he had achieved just the once, Salt did turn up and won 8 with Farmer managing a poor 5. So its Salt´s title along with the Sunworld Masters accolade not forgetting an emphatic 13 leg advantage over his old adversary Farmer. In fact just to rub it in, when they squared up to each other for the last time Farmer although winning the bull couldn’t match Salt´s consistency on the 20 bed. Scores of 60,60,60,140,140 and 41 out (S1,D20) in two for a reasonable 17 darter and an 8-2 personal record against Farmer, was a clear indication of who has the bragging rights. It wasn’t vintage Salt by any means, some of his legs were lets say, less than satisfactory, but when he had to perform he did, the mark of a true master. Another score to settle was that of third place between James Brown and Dave Wharton. The 2 point cushion Brown enjoyed from week 9 meant that Wharton had to win 3 more legs than his opponent to achieve a very creditable third spot. They played each other early in the evening with Brown winning the bull. A slow start from both livened up when Brown registered 2x85 and a ton only for Wharton to score 2x140, the latter leaving 58 which he nailed next visit on S18,D20. This meant one more win than Brown would result in a tie. It wasn’t to be with both players losing more legs than they should have, Brown losing 5 to Wharton´s 6, leaving Brown 3 legs clear and a deserved third place. Wharton consoled himself with yet another victory over the Masters champion, his third in four weeks in a 4 ton leg, Wharton pegging out on D8. There weren’t too many other legs of note, but one worth mentioning was the Terry Hagenaars, Brown match. The Dutchman hit 121, 180 with Brown scoring 140, 2x100 sandwiching a score of just one point (2 darts coming out of treble 20). That gave Hagenaars first opportunity of a shot which he converted with S18,S18,D20 for a fine 76 out. Paul Austin couldn’t

reproduce last week´s player of the week performance, but sometimes your opponent doesn’t give you the opportunity as in the match Wharton v. Austin, Wharton winning the bull. 2x140 and a 58 out (S18,0,D20) and an 18 dart leg meant Austin needed to go out in 15 darts. Quite possible for Austin but one leg is a real killer, necessitating winning the throw to maximise opportunity. Once again only 3 maximums (McGivern, Brown and Hagenaars) but a hefty 36x140. Least darts came from Brown and Wharton (18 darts) and Brian Donkin (17 darts). A fine 120 out (S20,T20,D20) courtesy of Mick McGivern was the highest finish of the week. Player of the week this week has just one nomination his 6x140 and a 19 and 17 dart leg and the title of Sunworld Masters Champion by a clear 13 points makes Sam Salt my player of the week.
