FRENCH AND RUSSIAN TOURISTS FLOCK TO TORREVIEJA Pizana confirmed that British and Scandinavian tourism once again remained the most important to the city.

Torrevieja’s Councillor for Tourism, Luis María Pizana, appeared at a press conference last week where he took stock of the July and August tourist figures published by the city. The figures showed the number of visitors and consultations there had been at the municipal tourism offices, and were based on

increases in energy and water consumption, solid waste generation and of course hotel occupancy. He said that results were fairly stable, maintaining the levels enjoyed in recent summers despite a serious downturn in the economic conditions, together with the significant decline in the purchasing power and the recov-

ery of tourism in North Africa. Despite the doubts there had been a satisfactory tourism demand, once again highlighting the many attractions and underlining Torrevieja as a tourist destination. Whilst Pizana confirmed the importance of British and Scandinavian tourism to the city, which once again remain the most important in tourist numbers during this summer, he said there had also been a marked increase in the numbers of French and Russian tourists which, in turn, has resulted in an increase in the average expenditure from international tourists. He said that one of the reasons of Torrevieja’s success had been the commitment of the City to participate alongside the Costa Blanca at the many different international tourism fairs, especially in the emerging markets of northern Europe. He also considered important the familiarisation trips to the city of a number of Tour Operators from Russia and Poland to see first hand the city’s many cultural and gastronomic

attractions. Torrevieja had done well to maintain hotel occupancy levels during the months of July and August, at an average of over 80%, with peak weekends 90100%, alongside similar destinations in the province as Javea, Denia and Calpe.

ELDERLY BRIT FOUND DEAD ALONE A 70 year old man, said to be of British nationality, was found dead in his home at calle Londres on the Orihuela Costa urbanizaci贸n El Mirador de los Altos on Tuesday night, after the fire service were called to assist in gaining access to his home, following complaints from neighbours that the television had been heard constantly for some days and there was a strange smell emanating from within. A Russian neighbour had noted unusual noises, including what sounded like shouts and screams from the property, but was unable to understand the language being spoken. Some days later, with the noise of the television failing to subside, the neighbour called the local police, who attended the home, but were unable to raise a response. They in turn called for the fire service to gain access, at which point the lifeless body of the resident was found in the bath, naked and badly decomposed, having apparently died some days earlier. The television was also found to be on with the volume turned up. It is an ever increasing situation that elderly people are left alone and die without any assistance or having been missed. In The Leader last

year we reported how this phenomenon seems to be growing with more and more elderly people become isolated from the community, often following the loss of a partner, and without friends or family nearby.

DENUNCIA BY TELEPHONE ‘RIP OFF’ If you can afford the cost of the telephone call the Director General of Police has initiated a multi language system to enable tourists to make denuncias by telephone during the summer tourist months. The system is available in English, French , German and Italian. However, a member of staff at the Leader used the service two weeks ago. She was put on hold for 6 minutes at the end of which time she was cut off without ceremony. When her bill came through the cost for the ‘non service’ was 22 euro. I appreciate the country is in financial difficult but how can the Police defend such charges, I wonder. I will be passing this information to the authorities for their comment of course. It will be interesting to hear their explanation. I wonder if there are any other readers that have used the service. I would be keen to hear their thoughts. For your information the number is 902-102112 and it will remain open in English until October. The line is manned by Policia Nacional between 9.00 and 21.00 and is operational 7 days a week.

UNATTENDED CANDLE CAUSES HOUSE FIRE A 65 year old Irish resident of San Luis in Torrevieja had a lucky escape on Tuesday, when an unattended candle caused a fire to the property on avenida Robleda. The fire caught hold at around 01:00 in the morning in the property that does not have electricity, but in inhabited. The homeowner and surrounding neighbours were evicted whilst fire fighters brought the blaze under control, which was declared safe at around 02:20,Official sources have confirmed that there were no injuries.

12,000 ILLEGAL HOMES IN ORIHUELA Following data collected in the first aerial survey of the Orihuela municipality, as reported was to happen in The Leader previously, it has now been revealed that Orihuela has 12,000 properties which can be classed as “illegal”, and not properly registered with the planning department, and therefore prevented the town hall from collecting property tax worth hundreds of thousands of euro. The PSOE councillor for planning, Antonia Moreno, revealed the startling statistics this week, which she also states makes, “urban planning very difficult”, and that, "There are houses, for instance, on the Orihuela Costa not paying IBI (property tax) and should have paid more than 800 euro per year, simply because of the location". She continued to explain that, "there are citizens who live in first or second line of the beach and pay nothing, but take advantage of the services funded by those who do pay their taxes." The town hall undertook the project of photographing all properties across the municipality from the air, using the skills of a specialist company, which then allowed them to audit exactly what properties

and facilities were actually registered with the planning department, including the amount of space a property may take up, whether there are swimming pools or winter gardens attached, as well as enabling the town hall to give the most accurate impression of the consideration of urban planning than it has ever had. Now, the town hall can start the process to claim for both taxes which are due now, as well as claiming tax for previous years. As previously reported from a press conference launching the 300,000 euro scheme, the town hall would be able to claim retrospective tax for the last 4 years, and this audit would bring property status up to date, rather than the listing values from 1994, which is what the tax valuation had been set at. The evidence collated will also allow for properties to be re-classified into taxable brackets, making a fairer system for all property owners across the entire municipality, albeit at an increase in cost to the individual property owners. Antonia Moreno continued to explain that the collection of IBI from those properties not currently registered, and therefore "have not paid" could exceed several hundred thousand euro, but another problem with these homes is their status on the Plan General de Ordenación Urbana (PGOU), made the properties vulnerable, as the information on record, and “collided with reality, especially in the districts". The councillor also questioned why some of these properties have been allowed to remain, when it is clear that they should have been demolished, and yet not a single demolition order had been issued in the last 25 years. She concluded that once the inspection and collation of data is finished, then the town hall would intend to raise a complaint through the courts against any individual who may have ignored the illegality of these homes.

10,000 FRUITS FOR AECC

Almost 10,000 euro was donated to the AECC cancer charity last week; the culmination of months of hard work, organisation and tireless fundraising by the local community of San Fulgencio. Sarah Bavington from urbanisation La Marina has been instrumental in organising a series of fundraising events from a golf day, sponsored hair grow and an auction, culminating in a charity football match against the San Fulgencio local police in July. The match was the idea of Paul 'Doc' Docherty who was diagnosed with cancer towards the end of 2011. Whilst receiving treatment at Torrevieja Hospital, Paul became aware of the tremendous work that the AECC does and decided to throw his support

behind the charity. As a keen footballer he came up with the idea of a charity football match and not just any match, one against a police team. With the support from the councillor for the urbanisations and the Town Hall the idea grew momentum and even resulted in the auction of an official signed Messi framed photo. Sarah said the golf day raised 700€, the Messi photo was auctioned for 560€, an auction at Ananda's bar raised 1,400€, a sponsored hair grow raised 1,200€ and Zodiacs bar donated 665€. It was a fantastic result and effort which saw the whole community come together to support the cause and Maria Wilson, President of Torrevieja Office of AECC wishes to sincerely thank everyone involved for their efforts and donation.

The Show Group Torrevieja has lost their home of twenty years and is now searching for a new rehearsal venue. It is with great sadness that the Show Group has had to say farewell to the homely comfort of Los Arcos where they have rehearsed and performed throughout their long history. The Show Group Torrevieja is one of the oldest theatre groups in Torrevieja and during their twenty year history they have been entertaining residents and tourists with their energy packed shows. During their long existence The Show Group have performed well loved musicals, pantomimes, original musical comedies, murder mysteries and several variety shows and have also raised well over 50,000€ for local charities. The Show Group are proud of their fund raising record and the money they have been able to give to a wide range of local charities. The group members nominate different charities to support every year and then work hard to produce live shows and entertainment that will raise much needed cash for their chosen causes. Over the years money has been

raised for all sections of the local population. The group want to find a new venue in Torrevieja that they can make their new home. They need a venue for their twice weekly rehearsals and maybe even for their performances so that they can continue enchanting and entertaining audiences for the forthcoming years. ENGLISH TEACHERS WANTED. AMFA in the centre of Torrevieja require volunteers to assist teaching basic English to Spanish disabled, unemployed over 17 year olds, mainly for use in the workplace. The ability to speak Spanish, although some would be an advantage, is not necessarily a must, due to the use of computer translation aids. The classes are every Monday and Tuesday 10.30 until 12.30.This is a new initiative, that could be of great benefit to AMFA with their very limited staffing resources. They also need a computer for use in the tutorials, if anyone has a reliable unused one to donate it would be appreciated. There is also a possibility in the future for further volunteers with basic Spanish speaking abilities to assist in the Torrevieja ADL centre helping adults seeking employment, learn work related English speaking skills. CRAZY PAVEMENT COMPENSATION PAID Torrevieja town hall has agreed to pay compensation to a driver who claimed that his vehicle tyres had suffered damage from being in collision with newly installed pavement features on the main Caballero de Rodas street.

The Vega Baja Garden Club met on 3rd September at its usual venue, Los Rosales Restaurant, Campo de Guardamar. Chris Hughes of Lawns in Spain gave a most interesting talk on the common mistakes that many people make, trying to grow good green lawns here on the Costa Blanca. He illustrated his talk with samples of different types of grass and addressed six basic problems with cultivating a lawn. He explained how it is possible to achieve success, through careful choice of the type of

grass, and proper preparation of the ground, without having to use large volumes of water, and at an ongoing economic cost. More information can be found on his website: www.lawnsinspain.com . Members questions were answered and various plants provided by the Club were raffled. The next meeting, on 1st October, at 13.45 for a prompt 14.00 start, will include a talk by John Donovan on growing tomatoes, a general Gardening Question and Answer session, and the Club's AGM, when feedback will be received on last season's programme, and officers to serve on the committee to progress this season's programme will be elected. Incredibly, the report states that the town hall admits that these elements of “improvements” to the streets of the city, “do not meet the mandatory

rules” regarding pavements and kerb stones. The whole development of these streets has been entangled in a political and financial mess, after what some claim to have been inferior work started to crumble, but the contractor disappearing and refusing to carry out repairs. Although designed to look pleasing, the intermittent raised kerb stones were a nightmare to many a driver and pedestrian alike, with many people witnessing those who stumbled over them, unaware of the dangers and with absolutely no consideration for people with impaired vision, as those able sighted street users clearly struggled to see them as it is. The town hall has now agreed to pay 200 euro compensation to the Madrid resident in compensation for the damage to his tyres, which may well now open up the proverbial flood gates for claims from other drivers who may have been subject to similar damage, as well as pedestrians who could have suffered potentially serious or fatal injuries if they were to trip and fall into the path of a car, for which the town hall would now clearly have accepted responsibility.

COR VERA AIRPOR T TO BEGIN OPS The President of the Murcia region, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, has said this week that the new International Airport of Murcia, based in Corvera, will begin operations ,”soon”, because the infrastructure, “is already finished”. He continued to state that once the final calibration flights are complete, then the airport will be immediately available as an operational airfield, with airlines theoretically able to land and take off, “within a few months”. The politician was speaking on a Spanish radio station and made comment that this project, "is not work to be built in a matter of months", nor is any kind of delay as dramatic as might be thought, as in fact, the work actually started in 2007, whereas now, some five years later, the airport is, “nearly completed”. He also pointed out that despite speculation of the investment being done on something of a whim, the whole concept of the airport first began conception in the 60´s, when the Chamber of Commerce first made demands for an airport of this stature, and has developed ever since, in order to “meet the demands of the region”. He also pointed out that there was an eight year gap in development, when the PSOE government halted the project, but negotiations are still ongoing with relation to the possible closure of San Javier to passenger traffic with the AENA airport authority. He of course accepted that Murcia is already served by an airport at San Javier, with around 1.5 million passengers, but the airport has many operational limitations, due to the fact that passenger traffic shares air and ground space with military operations. The minister

believes that that the priority for San Javier ought to be with military developments rather than commercial, with the growth of the success of the air academy there and the benefits already recognised through the military field. Because of these limitations, it is impossible to provide an adequate service to passengers from San Javier. For example, in order to fly to Murcia from the capital, Madrid, a passenger would, “have to get up at 4 in the morning and take a plane leaving at 6 am to Murcia, and then there are no more planes until the afternoon to returning to Madrid”. Therefore, the president regrets that Murcia San Javier is, “not an airport that can respond to the interests of Murcia”, when 80% of passenger would be forced to fly to neighbouring Alicante. The need for a bigger, more suitable airport is clear and the path is still open for the launch of Corvera.

RE-DEDICATION OF THE LA SIESTA GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE A rededication service was held at La Siesta Parish Evangelist Church, Garden of Remembrance on Tuesday 4 September. The Service given by the Reverend Chris Scargill, was attended by members of the various British Legions from the area, the standards were carried by Torrevieja Royal British Legion, the Royal Air Force Association and The Royal Marines Association. The Service was to dedicate and hallow the ground around the Garden of Remembrance where a new pathway had been laid to allow access to wheelchair users and others with similar disabilities. Pam Brooks who was one of the

founder members of the branch and a wheelchair user herself, was chosen to cut the ribbon and the last post was played by John Atkins. The day ended with an excellent meal at Portico Mar which was attended by 80 people The Royal British Legion would like to thank people for their donations especially the Royal Airforce Association for their donation of 250 euro, and the Royal Naval Association also for their donation of 250 euro. May we sincerely apologise to the Royal Naval Association who did not attend due to an oversight in the invitations. The Chairman wishes to apologise for this error.

We will be offering a wide range of fun, informative and business training courses throughout the next few months, from photography and pet care and using computers for business, such as Facebook, Twitter, Augmented Reality and more. But the first batch of courses are with our very popular, native Spanish teacher, who will be running courses to suit all levels, from beginners to business people, and everyone in between, in small groups in our purpose built training suite in our offices at La Zenia. Too much of a good thing? “Ooo, lovely! 45 degrees in the shade!” exclaimed our friend, vigorously tapping our outside thermometer, as we were desperately trying to keep cool during yet another heat wave. High temperatures such as this are great if you are on holiday, have nothing to do but drink refreshing liquids in the shade of a palm tree, or can sit in an airconditioned room all day. However, all this can get a bit much for normal dayto-day activities, if such extreme temperatures continue for too long. Admittedly, these high temperatures are unusual in the Canary Islands, and often only last for a few days as the hot winds are blown from the Sahara. ophthalmic surgeon tells me often accompany the hot winds. Don't misunderstand me, I am not suffering from the usual Brit disease of endlessly complaining about the weather; I left that little bundle of misery back in the UK many years ago, but merely pointing out that adjustments to extreme temperatures do take getting used to. It has been a strange year on an island that rarely sees such wide variations in temperature. A few months ago, temperatures on the island plunged to around 10 degrees, which some of our elderly neighbours told me was the coldest for 30 years, yet a few days ago temperatures were in excess of 45 degrees, and higher in parts of the south of the island. During spells of high temperatures, medical alerts are issued by the islands’ government and, unlike some holidaymakers who attempt to go trekking during periods of excessive heat, often with disastrous consequences, most people attempt to follow the Canarian way of doing things. Such changes in day-to-day living include getting up early to complete necessary physical activities and household chores before it gets too hot, having a siesta during the hottest part of the day (a sensible idea at any time of the year anyway), not taking the dog for a walk during the heat of the day, drinking lots of fluids (not alcohol!), as well as shopping in one of the many air

conditioned shopping centres late into the evening. Visitors to the island often ask me about our energy bills and are envious when I tell them that we have no central heating, other than switching on a fan heater occasionally during the coldest parts of the year, or maybe the negligible expense of lighting a few candles on a really chilly evening, remembering that it is all relative to what you are normally used to. However, the flip side of the coin does mean that many homes on the island now have air conditioning units installed, and these are now used much more frequently now than in previous years, when they were a rare sight in all but the most expensive properties. These units are expensive to run, and mean that what is not spent on heating during the winter months tends to be spent on air conditioning during the summer; so we do not escape high energy bills completely. Island living means that many of us spend most of our time outdoors. Other than periods of very low or excessively high temperatures, we tend to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner outdoors and, again, with just a few candles for company, which also helps to reduce overall energy consumption.

“What about lack of water?” is another question that would be expats and visitors often anxiously ask. Despite the lack of regular rainfall, sometimes occurring only for a few days in February in the south of the island, I have not known a time when we cannot use hosepipes to wash our cars, hose our patios or to water the plants in the garden. Underground reservoirs, as well as occasional rainfall in the mountain areas, together with an endless supply of water from the desalination plants, means that this is never an issue. After all, we are surrounded by the stuff. As for washing the car? No, it is far too hot for that. I’m off for a siesta! ‘Mike Probert talks Golf Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Golf Course Condition If you play golf here on the Costa’s during the long summer months you will find courses in excellent condition with green grass and fast greens, Unfortunately there is a price to pay for the good condition of the courses and this usually shows itself in the early weeks of September when many of our local courses look the worse for wear and just why is this? The last week in August and first week in September are used by courses to hollow tine the greens and it takes 15-20 days for the greens to recover from this work. In addition to this due to the lack of rain during the summer months the courses pay huge amounts of money for water to be pumped onto their courses but unfortunately the quality of this water varies and in particular the salt levels in the water and falling night time temperatures can cause problems particularly on the greens. The result is that the greens, while putting reasonably well can look brown and patchy and at present Bonalba is an example of this problem. The problem can also appear as similar problems on fairways and fringes of greens as currently seen at Altorreal and La Peraleja at present. The courses will repair themselves in a few short weeks and all they need is some respite from the searing heat and more than anything else, natural rain water. Take another look at the courses towards the end of September and you will really see the difference. Dave was one of our first members to join the society, played for many years until his wife Sheila died couple of years ago.He also was a popular player with the Gogarty's darts team.Our sincere condolences go to his family at this sad time. NEW SEASON UNDERWAY FOR EUROGOLF SOCIETY The first game of the Eurogolf 2012 season took place on 6 September with 45 members taking part. A lower number than normal due to members still being on holiday and the fact that it was temporary greens. The competition was a Texas Scramble and fortunately the weather had cooled down for us. The winning team with a score of 60.9 was: T Stanley, M Eckersall, F Gentilli, Ghost. Second place with a score of 61.4 was D Weedon, C Stanley, J Pohl, A Marshall. The Captain wished everyone a good season and advised that his chosen charity for this year would be HAH Costa Blanca. September the 5th members of Boxers Golf Society took on the tricky Aguilon course near San Juan de los Terreros in an individual Stapleford competition. The course looked good and the greens are beginning to come back into shape. On the day we played only two groups, so some of us in division two had to play with the big boys in division one. One of the big boys, Brian Mayhew, showed us how to play Aguilon by scoring 43 points, and this off a low handicap. (even lower as I write.) This made him the clear winner of group one and overall winner on the day. Roy Bishop was runner up in the group with a creditable 35 points whilst Peter Dawson was third with 33 points. In group two Adrian Ball took the honours on count back with 33 points from John Kinch also on 33points. Pam Partridge was third with 25 points. Nearest the pin prizes were won by Brian Mayhew on the 4th, Derek Leonard on the 7th and Brian again on the 10th. 2s were made by Brian Mayhew and Adrian Ball. Dates for the Diary: The Autumn trophy is up for grabs at Roda on September the 20th. This is our Captain, Anthony Hammond’s penultimate competition in the hot seat and members are asked to give him their full support in appreciation of his endeavours on their behalf throughout the year. Saturday 1st September 2012 Today we played on one of our sister courses Villa Martin, an old championship that has seen better days, parts of the course are just worn out and like all the courses in the area it really needs some prolonged rain to soften the ground and encourage some new growth. We played an individual medal format today from the yellow tee plates which are almost back on the white tee area's so it was a long test for all our players. Two players, Barry Roehrig and Brian Bevan returned the best score of net 73, so a countback of the last nine hole was needed to decide the winner. Following the countback Barry was awarded first place and Brian second place. In third place was Jack Simpson with a net 76 and fourth place was taken by John Stabler with a net 77. Our nearest the pin winners were Brian Bevan on the 6th hole, Barry Roehrig on the 13th, Peter Yarwood on the 13th and Dave Friedman on the 17th. In our two's competition two were scored today by Barry Roehrig and Brian Bevan on the 9th hole, unfortunately for them hole number 17 was drawn from the hat so its our first rollover for several weeks. Our best dressed golfer today was our newest member David Gray. David had a very tough start to his round losing two balls on the first hole and then nearly losing his buggie as it rolled down the bank of the first fairway and he had to chase it to stop it running into the tree's!! The Hubbers once again made the 25 minute journey to one of the area´s most popular courses Roda. Rarely do you hear of any criticism of this track and this visit was no exception. The last meeting before the imminent IVA increases coincided with a very hot and humid atmosphere with little wind. Much the same as any summer outing. ALBATROSS GOLF LEAGUE Hacienda Del Alamo 28th August Round 6 of the Albatross Golf League was played at this great course which as usual was in excellent condition. Ten teams of 4 made there way down to Hacienda and boy was it hot! I think most people agreed that in 3 years of the league running this was the hottest weather we had played in. The scoring was pretty hot as well with new boys Bocados Restaurant breezing to victory with 130 points (22 under) and Team Shaky 2nd with 122pts just edging out Katie Reillys by a point. With 3 rounds left Team Shaky are not making a move to catch early leaders Ebony & Ivory. Don’t forget best 6 results from 9 so now most the teams are looking to drop their poorer rounds. Worth noting that Breakaways have only played in 5 events so have a full score still to count. TMGS AT LA FINCA - 5 SEPTEMBER A very nice and pleasant warm day saw 23 members and 3 guests take part in a Stableford competition at La Finca which was in decent condition with the exception of the greens, which in all fairness, is the same for many of the golf courses this time of the year. We just have to accept that twice a year, some greens might not be the type we are used to and prefer. The days scoring wasn’t exceptional either, except for the visitors that didn’t appear to be bothered about the greens, especially Aaron Clinton who came in with 42 points and was heard to say that he is used to putting on ploughed fields, being Irish! Aaron played off of 9 and his name has been noted for his next visit where the Handicap Secretary will, undoubtedly, wield the sword. The Silver Division was won by Mick “I can’t hit 36 points” Kennedy with a very reasonable 35 points and followed up in 2nd place by Bill Whylie who just edged out Pauline Johnson on a countback, both scoring 32 points. The Gold Division was a little tighter with Captain Alan Rickers taking 1st place with a creditable 34 points, just one point ahead of Paula Hagart on 33 poins who took 2nd place on another countback, pushing Steve Higgins into 3rd place with both scoring 33 points. The Society continues to grow an considering we have

really only been going for some 5 weeks we have 52 fully paid up members and must be the fastest growing society in this area. SAN LUIS BOWLS REPORT Not a great deal to report on the bowls front, but many congratulations to June Jones, Colin Lindgren and Keith Jones on winning the Greenlands 3 day competition this week. The Come and Go League has two more weeks to run. All members are welcome. In preparation for the coming season, the Winter League has another practice session on Tuesday, 11the September. The Southern League teams have a practice run on Monday, 15th October – please see notice boards for details. There are further dates for your diary – Friday, 5th October is the Draw for the Club Championships, preceded by Fun bowling 1.30-2.00, Draw at 4.30, followed by a barbecue at 5.30. On Saturday, November 3rd, there is a mobile casino evening – see Social notice board. The Christmas party is booked at Casa Ventura for Saturday, 15th December. There are two touring teams booked for Sunday, 14th October and Sunday, 11th November. Please look on the notice boards for details. EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB On 1st September we had our return game with Indalo, at their place. The coach left the Emerald Isle at 10am with Bowlers and their Guests, arriving at Indalo at around 12.30pm to refreshments and drinks before the game started. Heavy storms and fires around the area had left the ground and greens under water, then covered in ash. Only two days hard work by their Club members enabled the game to take place under ideal bowling conditions on the match day, not too hot with a nice gentle breeze. As Club Captain for the day, I did tell the Indalo team that due to upsets early on in the year we had to re-form and reorganise, and we therefore felt it was a good idea to let them look after the Trophy for the next year, provided they kept it well polished and under twenty-four hour surveillance! Well, they did keep it as we only had one winning rink, thanks to Bill Hawthorn, Les Bath, Ann McDowell and Maureen Jeffs, the final results of both home and away games being 4 1/2 rinks to Emerald Isle, 11 1/2 rinks to Indalo. After our game (score line 115-178) we enjoyed a very good BBQ meal followed by Trifle or Apple Pie & Ice Cream followed by Card Bingo and a Raffle. Shame about the score line but lovely people - just one big, happy family - and we look forward to seeing them all again next year. We arrived home at around 9.45pm, tired and a little disappointed, after a good, enjoyable day. Bill Allen.

VALENCIA FEDERATION V SPAIN AT VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB Vistabella Bowls were very pleased to greet and to entertain the Spanish bowls squad last weekend, 1st & 2nd September 2012, when they competed against Federation teams as part of their training and in preparation for the forthcoming World Championships in Adelaide, Australia in November. The National squad were guests of a Valencian Select. The fixture was held at Vistabella over two days, and because there was so much interest from the Valencian bowlers 20 different players were used on each day. Conditions were ideal, as it was much cooler than the oppressive heat we have had recently. All matches were played very competitively, and although the National squad won quite convincingly overall, the Valencian men drew all four of their sessions. However, the main winner was the camaraderie that was created, so much so, that the National Manager would like to make it an annual event. Our thanks to all at Vistabella, who provided all the food and drink, for making us welcome, and to the Umpires and Markers, who did their work so efficiently. John Muldoon, national director of bowls for spain, said “it was a very good weekend – Vistabella bowls are strong front runners for 2013” Fred Roberts, team manager of the Spanish national squad quoted “the organization by Vistabella was excellent and a credit to bowls in Spain. I hope the event at the club goes from strength to strength. GREENLANDS BOWLS REPORT

Yet again the sun shone for us over all 3 days of the Greenland's Open Triples competition. We would like to thank the companies that supported us, they were, Sporting Arbitrage, Ibex Insurance, Quesada Gold Centre and SPN Funeral Plans. 24 teams met and enjoyed the each other's company in what was a very close fought contest. The winners were June Jones, Colin Armitage and Keith Jones who did not lose a game the whole way through the competition and thoroughly deserved their trophies, but a very valiant Greenland's team of Gail Watson, Bill Sims and Fred Willshire were the runners up, and the only team that beat them were, ........... the winners, TWICE ! A special thank you goes to Jill Collins and Helen Langois for organising such a brilliant raffle, to Hayley and staff for our buffet and all the helpers who worked behind the scenes to make the club look as good as it does. Bobbie Sims also deserves a big thank you from all who took part and from Greenlands Bowls Club, without people like this these events would not happen.Thank you.

Debbie of Euronics in Blue Lagoon The Euronics Thursday Dart League (formerly Imperial Pools) convened for their A.G.M. recently at the Rendezvous Bar and despite the major change in sponsorship, there were only minor changes to the Rules. The league which has enjoyed continued success since being taken over by the existing committee of 4 years, once again unanimously voted in the same committee of Paul Durrant, Derek Kingsbury, Steph Simpson and Linda Cross. The chairman expected the league championship to be as close in the coming season as the 2011-2012 one, where the outcome was only determined on the last game of the season. Several transfers have taken place during the close season, resulting in Gogarty´s looking like favourites for the title, with current champions the Meerkats and previous champions the Bulls possibly looking at only runners up. Busters, Breakaways and the Hub Hyenas will all have a part to play in deciding the championship. The chairman concluded his report by thanking Mr. Patrick Spratt of Imperial Pools for their support in sponsoring the league for the past 3 years which has sadly come to an amicable conclusion. The chairman acknowledged the valuable contribution Imperial Pools had made to the league and wished the company continued success. To replace such a sponsor was a difficult task the chairman explained, however after some lengthy discussion with Ms. Debbie Mackleston of Euronics – Blue Lagoon her company has taken on the role of league sponsor for the coming season. The white goods and electrical company would be a perfect partner for the league, with league members enjoying the best deals around says Ms. Mackleston. Supporting Euronics will be Sunworld, the property sales and management outfit based in Los Dolses. Vic Cooper a keen player himself discussed the possibility of sponsoring with the chairman who accepted Sunworld´s sponsorship of the K.O. Cup. Similarly league members wishing to rent, buy or sell property are encouraged to visit Sunworld´s offices for some great offers. Minor rule changes were implemented, with only one change proposed by Derek Kingsbury, who wished the K.O. Cup format to be changed from the existing best of 7, 1001 6 a side team game to a best of 9 triples 701. Kingsbury explained the team game, whilst a leveller, enabling teams in a low league position to compete against the best, it was time for a change and also make the final a more exciting event. A vote was taken and the new format was passed unanimously. The chairman discussed the league accounts, which were in a healthy position, despite once again distributing a top quality bristle dartboard to each participating team, free of charge. The accounts were passed unanimously. The Breeze Bar (San Miguel) wished to join the league. The chairman had visited the venue and explained the bar had an extensive new games room, ideal for the darts league. Breeze Bar was unanimously elected to the league. The meeting concluded at 12 noon after 1 1/2 hours of convivial discussion. This weeks match was once again fished on the town stretch of the River Segura in Murcia- full access to all the pegs there is still very difficult but not beyond reach. The results were as follows: in first place was Stuart Thompson with 13.34kilos, second was Dennis Pick with 11.16 kilos, third was Barry Homer with 8.00 kilos and in fourth place was Ian Dalzell with 7.94kilos. The next match on Thursday the 13th of September will be fished at the Eden Canal. Points of interest- the British record as of the 31st of July 2012 for the Crucian Carp was 4lb 9 ozs for the Sunfish 14oz 2dr. And for the Bleak was 4oz 9dr. The next Quiz night will be on Tuesday the 11th of September starting at 7.30pm. The cost is just 1 Euro per person and teams of up to 6 or less may take part; a raffle will be held but no Buffet will be available. However the Bar is open for food. The final Club meeting for September will be on Sunday the 16th with the Committee at 10.00 and the General meeting at 11.00. This is because there are 5 Sundays in September this year. ABBEY ANGLING MATCH FISHING By Terry Screen This week’s 3rd round match of the Winter League was fished at Eden Stretch on the River Segura on the 4th September. Fishing this water now makes you feel like one of Major Wingate’s Chindits hacking your way to the pegs, as the reeds are now so thick and high. It seems that only a few of the Anglers have the inclination to go down to the river in there own time and clear some of the pegs out. THADER LEAVE EMPTY HANDED DESPITE TWO GOAL LEAD Almoradi .......3 Thader .......2 The first local derby and it should set the scene. From the first corner Adriano had a good chance for the visitors but shot wide. A good opening run by Quino was repeated at the other end by Pedro, again no finish but good, attacking football. Almoradi were playing the long ball game (shades of Wimbledon). A long cross ball found Juan who shot across Dani to make it 1-0 to the visitors. Both sides were missing passes although the game was very watchable. With the long ball the lino needs to be aware of the offside but he seems to be unable to keep up. Up to now the ref has managed to give a yellow every 7 mins. Pomers then had to leave the field with, what looks like, a hamstring injury which could have a long term affect. A spec ball by Marcos was hit wide then the other end by Pablo. Pazos had made some good saves to keep Thader in front and then with a good run Juan beat the off side and fired Thader into a 2-0 lead. Due to an injury to the lino Almoradi got on level terms through Pedro and Malbo in time added on and, despite trailing for much of the half, it was the home side who went in with their tails up. Early in the 2nd period Adrian was unlucky not to spring the offside trap but both linos have been found wanting with their calls. The problem seemed to be that Thader were playing too close to each other and that made for a lack of space. Almoradi were moving the ball with much more authority and Thader were called upon to defend well to keep them at bay. The Thader defence was opened up again but Pedro shots wide, however moments later he was allowed to break free and clinically makes it three . Thader were now physically wilting and running out of ideas. As last Sunday the opposition seem to be quicker and fitter. Alberto needs to work on this in training and to encourage his forwards to cause more problems up front. Late in that game Thader squander to chances to rescue a point but missed them both. Two seasons ago I named this ref the whistler and he has not changed (whoops, welcome to a new season) Next week at home. CORDOBA .......0 ELCHE .......1 Yes, four wins from four games now mean that since Almeria lost 3 – 0 at Sabadell Elche really are clear top of league division 2A, with a maximum 12 points: ten goals for, and four against, and this was the first clean sheet this season! Other notable local results were Real Murcia losing for the first time 3 – 2 at Recreativo Huelva, but at the Rico Perez in Alicante the beleaguered coach Juan Mandia staved off calls for his head by Hercules beating Girona 2 -1 for their first points to move them off the bottom. Elche went to Fortress Archangel in front of a goodsized almost partisan crowd of 10,695, although the faithful 200 travelling fans were well-rewarded for their long trip. Cordoba hadn’t been beaten at home for almost a full year (they have now) since Deportivo won there last October. Oh, and if you like your stats, in the last 15 matches between the teams at The Archangel, Cordoba have won six, five were drawn, and Elche have won four. Make that five now… For the Illicitanos left back and dead ball specialist Albacar was back for an otherwise unchanged Elche team. They kicked off in their unfamiliar blue and red away kit because Cordoba, like near Andalucian neighbours Real Betis play in green and white stripes. It didn’t appear to make the slightest difference as the Illicitanos swept into an early lead after only nine min-

utes. New boy this season Fidel, as usual working well down the left crossed for Coro in space. His shot was parried by Alberto in the Cordoba goal, leaving new striker Carles Gil to acrobatically score his third this season and take him to joint top of the 2A goalscoring charts (known as the ‘Pichichi’ in Spain). Twenty minutes later he was taken off injured, replaced by this year’s supersub, ex-regular hardworking midfielder Mantecon. This enforced move took the edge off the Illicitanos’ attack, but stifled the home side’s attempts to redress the scoreline. With Elche’s dynamic new full back Suarez temporarily off the field boot- changing, his man Platino just failed to connect at the far post, and that was the last real chance Cordoba were to enjoy during the first half – or the match. The second half continued in the same vein, with Cordoba having slightly more possession, but the Illicitanos looking more dangerous on the counter attack. Excellent new Elche coach Fran Escriba sensibly rang the changes with wide left/midfielder Palanca replacing Fidel on 63 minutes and Berenger again substituting for Albacar with 15 minutes left; after 4 minutes injury time the game ended 0 -1 to Elche, efficiently retaining their top place. took a few weeks to get going last year. So: two points clear of second place Villarreal, the Illicitanos are going so well it’s almost worrying. On a rare foray into the Horadada box, Saurin forced Alex Sarria into a superb save, low down with his left foot with just a couple of minutes of normal time remaining. Normally at this point in a match, tension on the field transmits itself to those watching and a sense of urgency takes over, today, though, not a bit of it and the few who bothered to make the effort remained largely subdued. Subdued that was until Alfonso broke the deadlock, and Horadada hearts, deep into time added on. Horadada captain Campillo, a man as rugged as a West Country farmer, had marshalled his defensive troops brilliantly all game, yet one moment of hesitancy late in the game was to cost them dear. Failure to adequately clear a loose ball in their own box was seized upon by the lurking Alfonso who lashed in the winner from close range to secure all three points, two of which definitely weren't deserved, for Santa Pola. The result was tough on Horadada who more than matched Santa Pola for work rate and enterprise, a point apiece would have been a much fairer result. Next week, Santa Pola head west to take on an Alcoyano B aide who pipped them to the third play-off place last season and Horadada entertain Pinoso at the Ikomar.

Up until that moment, the visitors looked really good value for a point out of a game from which, for long periods, the only clear-cut winner appeared to be the sweltering temperature. Santa Pola probably shaded the first half with Horadada well on top during the second period in a game of few chances. In the end a single goal was enough for the hosts, who, whilst considerably better than last week at Campello, still seem to be something of a work in progress. A disappointing crowd of barely two hundred people weren't given much at all to cheer as both sides worked hard, to little effect, to create openings. Ten minutes in, Botella picked up the ball just inside the Horadada half and went on a surging run before letting fly from the edge of the box, a fine save then followed as Alex Sarria saw the shot all the way to turn it round his post for a corner. At the other end, the eye catching Robles helped himself to a rare stray pass by Chiqui, and really should have done far better than slap his shot into the side-netting from close range. Thus, the first half pattern was set. On a playing surface that, unusually for Santa Pola, didn't appear to have had a very good summer, poor finishing undermined the sterling efforts of both sets of hard working mid-fielders. Arrazola snatched at a Chiqui corner, producing nothing but an embarrassing air shot before Alfonso exhibited poor technique, for him anyway, to smash the loose ball well over. The second noteworthy save of the half saw Pepitiu get down well to deny Titi who took advantage of poor Santa Pola defending to send in a well placed snap shot. Half-time, honours even and no goals.

Alfonso battles with Javi Ruiz A positive statement of attacking intent by Horadada coach Antonio Pedreño saw him make a triple substitution with less than ten minutes of the second half played. On came defender Eloy with forwards Vardan and the live-wire Ensa replacing Samu and Jose Maria. The changes energised Horadada who then embarked upon their best spell of the match, forcing the Santa Pola back four to look sharp on a couple of occasions. For their part, Santa Pola looked somewhat lethargic as the mid-day heat began to take it's toll. Botella, clearly flagging, was hauled off along with Mario Lopez as Pola coach Antonio Ruvira sent on the fresh legs of Saurin and May.
