Continued from page 1 At the hearing, the prosecution asked for a sentence of three years in prison for negligent homicide, while the private prosecutor is insisting on four years. The defense, however, is calling for an acquittal. Unusually there are two defendants in the case, Vicente C. C. R. and Amparo N.R. Julia died two years after the accident having never regained consciousness. La plataforma ‘Stop Accidentes’ were at the trial lending moral support to the parents of the deceased girl. Accompanied by her mother and her Aunt, Julia was being taken to a relative’s house where all were to enjoy
lunch and an afternoon dip in the pool. The first defendant, Vicente, is charged with driving the motorcycle that hit the child whilst under the influence of alcohol. The prosecution said that the bike had neither insurance nor ITV and following the accident the driver is said to have fled the scene although he did hand himself into the authorities two hours later. The second to be prosecuted is the aunt of the girl who is charged with manslaughter through gross negligence. She is said to have pushed the pram across the road, allegedly without due care and attention, and in so doing failing to ensure that there were no approaching vehicles. As well as the respective prison terms, both the prosecution and private prosecution have requested the withdrawal of the driving license for the same period of the sentence. The fatal accident occurred on August 3, 2007 when the mother and her aunt, Amparo NR, set out to cross the CV914 in Almoradí. It was the aunt who was pushing the pram containing the baby.
According to the account given by the parent, the accused started to cross the road as the motorcycle approached at speed. The bike hit the child who was thrown about 30 feet up into the air. It is said that the driver then fled the scene whilst the baby was transported to the Vega Baja Hospital. Shortly after being found to be in a serious condition the child was transferred to the General Hospital of Alicante where she spent the next two years in a coma from which she never recovered. As a result of the serious injuries sustained in the accident Julkia eventually died on December 29, 2009. The President of La plataforma ‘Stop Accidentes’ in Valencia said that at no time following the accident or during the trial had either defendant apologized to the parents of Julia.
Around 1.7 million flying passengers did not claim their rightful compensation from airlines last year, saving the airlines from paying some 400 million euro in payments due to cancellations and delays. Originally formed in Potsdam, the capital city of the German federal state of Brandenburg, the website refund.me was the brainchild of former TV host and journalist Eve Büchner, who started the company in August last year after a friend pointed out the European legislation that allows inconvenienced passengers to claim, but Eve realised that access to enforcing the regulations and gaining compensation was far from simple. Now the site has expanded into Spain and hopes to go some way to closing the gap in what airlines are managing to avoid paying. Eve explains, “It works really quickly. Users just have to key in their flight number and departure date and the high-tech system checks whether they’re entitled to compensation according to EU Regulation 261/2004”. EC Regulation 261/2004 established common rules on compensation and assistance to passengers in the event of denied boarding, flight cancellations, or long delays of flights. But the system goes beyond just offering advice, Eve continued, “It then generates an EU compliant claim form with all the required details. If the claim is enforced successfully, the airline will pay compensation of up to €600. On average a claim takes two-to-four months from start to finish, and our success rate is approaching 90 per cent.” It is perhaps obvious that airlines would shy away from encouraging claims against them, but as it is a law which benefits consumers, it can´t be ignored. With a potential of 400 million euro left unclaimed last year, the growth of the site is testament to the success already achieved by the company, and those they have already successfully helped.

SPAIN TO CHANGE ITS PLANNING LAWS BUT CAN THEY GET IT RIGHT THIS TIME?
The Spanish government in Madrid has published proposed changes to its national Land Law (Ley de Suelo) aimed at reinvigorating the countries ailing property market. The homeowners association, AUAN, has formally submitted suggested modifications in order to address some of the gaps and injustices which they believe have caused such a loss of confidence in the Andalucian real estate market. The groups suggested revisions include protecting the fundamental right to enjoy a property acquired in good faith and steps to be put in place to ensure that compensa-
tion is paid up front before a property is demolished. They further suggest that individuals should have the right to be compensated by public authorities when they are found to be at fault. It is also suggested that the supply of public services should not be denied to properties currently categorised as outside of an urban area. According to Mrs Hillen, "We have many members whose properties are earmarked to become urban. They can easily be connected to existing public services but are not permitted to do so because of the wording of existing legislation. Thus, some homeowners are forced to wait years to connect to a pylon across the road causing needless hardship which benefits nobody. We are suggesting that the government recognise the reality of rural life as it is on the ground and allows the law to reflect that reality.” In this vein, the group also calls for a clarification in the law regarding the illegal division of rural land for the cre-
ation of building plots, an act which, currently, is never proscribed from prosecution. “In a large number of cases these plots are now occupied by dwellings giving rise to the strange situation where the house is so old that its existence cannot be challenged but the plot can be called into question at any time, with very messy legal implications”, said Mrs Hillen. Other suggestions made by the group also call for the true reflection of the planning and legal situation of properties in the Land Registry, a requirement to inform third-party purchasers of any legal action against their property in order that they may represent their interests in court and improved transparency in the planning process. The national Land Law (Ley de Suelo) takes precedence over regional laws and any regional legislation must reflect any changes made to it. President of AUAN Maura Hillen said "There have been over forty amendments to regional and national laws in the last (10) years to try and deal with problems, including the latest Decree, but nothing has been of much help to our members, most of whom are British families who invested
their life savings in a Spanish property in good faith, only to find themselves in a legal limbo due to the confusion and ineffectiveness of different authorities and government departments. "Because the Junta de Andalucía has consistently failed to provide adequate measures to address the problems, we sincerely hope that the central government in Madrid will consider our suggestions and be willing to take the necessary steps to restore some confidence in the housing sector, and lift the threat of homelessness from the shoulders of thousands of investors who bought property here in good faith."

THE FINAL STEPS TO SAVE CALA MOSCA As the consultation period to potentially save the only green area of Orihuela Costa came to a close, there was still no halting the enthusiasm of those spearheading the campaign. At a press conference held at the CLARO offices on Friday, around 1,000 questionnaires had been completed by concerned residents, wanting to ensure that the full impact of allowing building projects on this plot of land was completed in full, as not only is this an area of beauty for views of the sea, but also plays host to two environmental elements that are currently under protected status, under European legislation, the flower, Helianthemum caputfelis, and a snail, Tudorella mauritanica. CLARO had already petitioned the European parliament to ensure that the environmental impact study was carried out, at that time supported by some 7,000 signatures. Although this time there were just 1,000, equating to around 3% of the population of the coast, those who submitted their views were as passionate as the campaign organisers, who had already highlighted flaws in the way this stage was to be carried out, with the majority of residents on the coast being unable to either understand or complete the questions on the form provided. As the boxes of documents were collected together to be delivered to the Playa Flamenca town hall, a visit to Cala Mosca was undertaken, where, in the midst of the land in question, a table had been set up to raise awareness with passersby. The plants and the snails, as well as other valuable creatures, may not realise the value of the presence of this group of people on their land, that they were there with the aim of saving their environment, but as humans often fail to take responsibility for how our lifestyles destroy the planet on which we live, at least those who completed the forms have now done all they can to try to protect this unique area, before the natural environment of the Orihuela Costa is replaced by more, and some say unnecessary, buildings.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.
FLOAT LIKE A B UTTERFLY, STING LIKE A BEE As a child growing up in fenland Lincolnshire, I always seemed to be attacked by wasps, yet only once by a bumblebee, which had the misfortune to be squashed, as I was performing a dramatic handstand on our lawn. I also well remember one of my parents’ friends dying from the effects of a wasp sting, which to an impressionable child didn't exactly endear me to any insect with a sting. As I grew older, I began to develop a greater respect for bees, as opposed to wasps. I learned that bees very rarely attack unless provoked. However, my hatred of wasps continued to be fuelled as I grew older by the sight of my partner frantically trying to escape a swarm of angry wasps that had been disturbed by his enthusiastic attempts to trim our fast growing hedge with an electric hedge trimmer. Those wasps were certainly angry and expressed their displeasure upon my partner with a vengeance; I have never seen him move so quickly as he did that morning. Since living in Spain’s Costa Blanca and the Canary Islands, I have never seen a wasp. I began to believe the myth that there are none of these evil insects on the Islands. However, I now understand that I am incorrect in this assumption and, to the contrary, wasps have been singled out as a major threat to native butterfly populations on the
Canary Islands. Although reportedly only living in the Western Islands, due to higher humidity levels, wasps are now spreading to the whole archipelago. As for the humble bee, I had not seen any in our garden until recently when, thanks to a huge and beautiful lavender plant that a friend gave us, is now home to many bees. Yes, I have learned to keep away from them, but also learned to be grateful to the honey bees on these Islands, and for the beautiful Canary Islands’ honey that they produce, as well as their generous contribution to the much loved honey rum, also produced on the island. Local honey certainly has a special and unique flavour, unlike any of the supermarket offerings that I have previously bought in the UK. I have also learned that the Canary Islands bee is unique to these Islands. The UK bee is striped yellow and black, with a white tip on the abdomen, whereas bees living in the Canary Islands have no yellow bands, and they are just plain old black and white. For an island that is rich in colour, culture and diversity, this is something of an anomaly! As for wasps, the Government in the Canary Islands is trying hard to control the damage that these insects cause to the beehives on the islands, and is working with beekeepers to locate and restrict the damage that they cause. As a child, I often used to ask what was the point of wasps? Apart from being given the unconvincing answer of how important they were in clearing away rotting fruit, I remained cynical about their purpose in the greater scheme of things. However, I have recently discov-

ered that a particular species of wasp living in the Canary Islands, commonly known as the Ensign wasp, is actually rather useful. This wasp, which looks a bit like a black spider is relatively harmless to humans, but is a parasite of cockroaches. The females of the species lay their eggs inside the egg cases of cockroaches and the wasp larvae eat the cockroach eggs. I know that many readers of my ‘Twitters’ are not too keen on my cockroach stories, but this Twitter does have a happy ending. So, if you happen to see an Ensign wasp in the Canary Islands, just welcome it with open arms! AROUND ORIHUELA AND THE COSTA The municipal council has received budgetary authorisation to start the modernisation work on the Avenida La Zenia, with a value of under 200,000 euro, the work has been put to a number of companies to provide the highest level of service and quality for the price, including removing obstructions, such as bollards which have prevented car doors from opening and have risked damage to vehicles, as well as other aesthetic improvements in an extensive project that may have to be completed in two stages, one before the summer, which would renovate one carriageway, then the work would continue after the high season. The national Spanish road network authority has this week declined a proposal by the council to relocate the bus stop on the La Zenia roundabout, in order to reduce the congestion and risk to pedestrians when buses stop for loading and unloading and taking up one of the through lanes of the roundabout. With no immediate solution obvious, the councillor for the coast and transport has held an emergency meeting with the bus operator, at which it was proposed to create a turning circle on the cross roads of Avenida de la Playa and Calle del Carmen, which would allow buses to swing round safely and then use the existing bus stop without blocking the main road.
The relocating of the popular Playa Flamenca market, which operates on a Saturday morning, has been put on hold temporarily, as the site which was selected to host the traders has been deemed as unsuitable, as this particular market can only be held on public roads which the town hall has jurisdiction. The site where the market was to move to is private land, and would therefore deem the market as being an illegal occupation, should it have been placed there. The coastal councillors are now looking to find a suitable street that can host the 1.8 kilometres of stalls, is on a public road and provides suitable access to all. In the meantime, the municipal council has said that they will now repair the toilets on the Saturday market site, as well as providing toilets for the Thursday market to avoid the use of green areas by people needing to relieve themselves.
Work on assessing accessibility and pedestrians crossing roads has also now been approved, with investigations looking at creating zebra crossings near the church, Zenia Boulevard and La Regia, so as to ensure a safer passage of pedestrians through traffic. A temporary though unofficial footpath along the Cliffside of Aguamarina has been brought to the forefront of coastal discussions this week, with the town hall now looking at making the walkway official, by removing part of a wall that obstructs pedestrians, and then providing a proper walkway, with handrails, so that the populr route which has become a cut through for a number of residents and visitors will be able to be used without risk or threat in the future. During the summer months, it is normal practice for officers from the Protecci贸n Civil to be on active duty on the Orihuela Costa, but this year their coverage requirement has been brought to the coast 3 months earlier than normal, with a crew and emergency fire tender being based in the coastal station during the morning, being actively used on fire prevention duties, rather than just emergency response, carrying routine patrols around the area on alert for the risk of forest fires.
Fire crews from Torrevieja attended a vehicle fire at Dehesa de Campoamor on Wednesday, when a car, said to be a Renault Megane, was reported to be on fire, and was attended by fire tenders and the police, who were able to extinguish the blaze, but the vehicle was totally destroyed as a result of the fire. The Mayor of Orihuela, Monseratte Guill茅n, has this week made an agreement between the social welfare department of the municipal governments, and the principal banks in the area, to all work together to find a solution to avoid evicting vulnerable people from their homes, if they find it difficult to maintain the mortgage repayments. The municipality now has 22 homes available through a social fund, at a nominal rent to the tenants, which they hope will be the basis of a future agreement with all of the banks to ensure the welfare of residents across the municipality.

REDUCING EMISSIONS THROUGH GREEN VEHICLES
The mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén, who is also responsible for Public Safety, last week added two new electric scooters to the fleet of local police vehicles. These two bikes, which cost about 3,700 euro each, have a range of 60 kilometres and can reach a speed of 65 kilometres per hour. They have a two year warranty and charging the battery takes between four to five hours. They also have LED lights and

have additional energy-saving features that increase the range of the vehicle. "Perhaps they are a little more expensive than normal combustion bikes, but the savings in greenhouse gas emissions and fuel make it worthwhile," said the mayor. He added that he had already acquired, by "leasing", two hybrid cars and an electric truck for parks maintenance Another initiative aimed at reducing pollution is the signing of an agreement with Repsol to promote the use of LPG (liquid petroleum from reducing emissions). This agreement, which was signed by representatives of Guillén and energy firm, will adapt 14 vehicles from the city fleet to use LPG, which will be achieved by further reducing emissions. "This is the commitment of the City Council in terms of energy efficiency and clean energy," said the mayor. Meanwhile, neighbouring Torrevieja the Partido Popular council has also sprung green shoots, with an electric vehicle going into service as part of the fumigation resource team, ironic that the eco-qualities of a vehicle would be promoted when it´s sole purpose is to destroy smaller elements of the environment, such as mosquitoes, fleas, cockroaches and rats, all of which may be a nuisance to the human race, but all of which play their own unique role in balancing the ecosystem that feeds and waters our planet and helps us to breath. The first 100% electric vehicle added to the Torrevieja fleet is the first of two which will be put into service for a contracted period of two years, although extendible by another two, and is equipped with an open back for the transport of tools, has two seats, a battery life of 24 hours operation after 4 hours charging, and reaches a maximum speed of 60 kilometres per hour, more than 30 times the average speed of a mosquito,

which on average flies at under 2 kilometres per hour. In other environmental news, a research boat has been in the waters off the coast of Torrevieja this week, as part of the ALNITAK association of marine biologists and conservationists, looking particularly at the life of Loggerhead Turtles, but also collating data on other marine activities. The ship is on a two week mission in the area with the aim of deepening the knowledge of food, diving patterns and sensory biology of sea turtles in order to prevent longline hook and other injuries which are affecting the long term wellbeing of these marine creatures off the Costa Blanca. Law enforcers have also been acting on green issues, and with the ongoing assistance of the public, officers from the Guardia Civil in Murcia have stepped up a campaign to prevent animal abductions from farms, and have arrested two people thought to be responsible for the theft of more than 50 animals from a single farm in Totana, and have recovered 16 stolen sheep which have been returned to their rightful owners.

SMOKERS AT RISK FRO M SIGHT LOSS
A LOCAL optician is warning smokers of the risks that the habit poses to their vision. Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe vision loss for people over the age of 55 in the western world. AMD is a degenerative retinal eye disease that causes progressive loss of central vision. AMD affects the macula – the part of the retina responsible for clear vision needed for daily activities such as reading or driving.1 According to the World Health Organisation the only established modifiable risk factor is smoking. People who smoke more than double their risk of developing AMD yet this is not widely known. ‘Awareness of blindness from smoking is worryingly low’, Colin Evans from Specsavers Opticas in Torrevieja explains; ‘When you inhale a cigarette, approximately 4,000 chemicals such as nicotine, tar, arsenic and ammonia enter your bloodstream and travel throughout your body. Many of these are poisonous to the delicate tissues of the eye, damaging the macula and ultimately leading to loss of vision.’ Mr. Evans warns: ‘As well as the early onset of AMD, smokers also have a higher likelihood of developing cataracts, a common causes of blindness and visual impairment. In addition, tobacco
smoking can lead to damage of the optic nerve, causing further vision impairment.’ In January 2012, just a year after the smoking ban came into force in Spain the National Committee for the Prevention of Tobacco (CNPT) and the Commission for the Tobacco Market estimated that 600,000 Spanish individuals had given up smoking and estimated that the consumption of tobacco in Spain fell by 17% as a result. Mr. Evans says: ‘This is excellent news for the nation’s health and eye sight. Other countries that have adopted the smoking ban have seen really positive health benefits as a result and it is hoped that this trend will continue in Spain. In 2010 the BBC reported that the number of emergency hospital admissions for heart attacks in England has fallen since the smoking ban was introduced three years ago, saving the NHS almost £8.5 million a year.’ Specsavers Opticas expects to see similar health benefits following the smoking ban in Spain and is encouraging smokers to take a positive step in safeguarding their eye sight by giving up. If a smoker has concerns, a thorough eye test can identify whether their eyes have any of the signs of AMD. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest Specsavers and book a free eye test.
Researchers from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid have developed a platform for treating Parkinson patients from their own home, by providing cognitive stimulation exercises through the Digital Terrestrial Television network. This tool, known as “EsCoTDT”, would mean that 115,500 patients with Parkinson's in Spain could benefit from treatment through the cognitive stimulation therapy at any time without having to leave the house, attend appointments, or have their normal day to day activities interrupted, and would also offer a considerable reduction in costs to health care service providers. Doctor Rafael Matesanz, director of the Spanish transplant organisation, ONT, has played down the announcement of half a million euro of cuts to his department, saying that the funding reduction from the Spanish government would not directly affect patients who require transplant operations. But he acknowledged that no public funded sector can avoid the funding axe, stating that “What has declined is an important grant for the training of professionals. But we have seen that with the availability we have, we can continue what we were doing well so far”, explaining that instead of running 20 training programs, the association will simply on ly offer 18 places in the future.

SHO W ME A SIGN A frequent complaint from residents of the Orihuela Costa, which has been highlighted on a number of occasions and has been bolstered by some politicians using the matter to gain favor, is the lack of street name signs, some of which have been stolen or damaged, others which have apparently never been put in place. With recent announcements of the night time ambulances being withdrawn, “how will ambulances from other areas find us, if we have no street signs?” was a common criticism, although modern ambulances are often fitted with state of
the art equipment that can pinpoint locations more accurately than delays whilst drivers read a street sign. After all, how else can a helicopter successfully rescue climbers from a mountain top who have no idea of their location, but they were able to be found from the triangulation and GPS data that their mobile phones provided? None the less, the matter is one of concern, and one which the town hall has sought to address. Since taking over the role of councilor for the coast, only a short time ago, Martina Scheurer has attempted to rectify the matter, first with a meeting of urbanization administrators, then with a meeting of urbanization presidents, who collectively represent every single person living on the coast. Having put the solution to those groups, the councilor said “tell us where the street signs are missing and we will replace them”. And yet, despite the account that the problem is a major concern to the coast, only two actually responded to the call for information. Still not content and certainly not ready to give up, still convinced that there is a matter that needs resolving, the next stage of data collection has been launched this week. A team of four technicians, in two vehicles, are now setting about
driving every single street and road across the Orihuela Costa, checking every junction, every street and recording where signs are missing. Needless to say there is a cost involved in this, one which could have easily been avoided, if those who others say are complaining actually came forward with the facts in the first place. But, don´t let any of this put you off. Don´t think that you can now leave it to somebody else or that it´s no longer your problem. Who knows if the technicians will be able to find all of the
streets, especially if they´re not sign posted. Your information is still needed and still very much wanted. It is a simple question of information at this time, according to Martina Scheurer, “If we know how many street signs we need, we can allocate a budget and get them replaced, but at the moment, we have no idea, it could be one or one thousand, we just don´t know. So if you are one of the people who have ever made a complaint, make it now and get your sign post registered on the list of those missing. How long will this take? “We don´t know”, explained Martina, “they will finish when they finish”, but there is no time like the present. You can even report missing, duplicated, broken, or incorrect, in fact anything that you think might be wrong, and you can do it anonymously, if you prefer. The simplest way is to contact the International Residents Office of the town hall, either by phone or by email, or just pop in and tell them in person, but please remember that this campaign is currently about “name” signs only, not traffic or information signs, they will come at a later date, but there´s nothing stopping you reporting them. It is just if the problem is that nobody knows how to get around, it´s your chance to put Orihuela Costa on the map, almost literally, by providing the information to a group of people so desperate to satisfy the critics of this particular perceived problem at least.

FOOD COLLECTION FOR CARITAS IN PILAR The mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, José Fidel Ros, along with a number of local councillors, were among the first to make donations last week at
the Herbolario Emperatriz, where a campaign has been launched to collect food, which will be donated to Caritas.
As he thanked the manager of the shop, Juana Sanchez, for his generosity the mayor said that "these initiatives are very important to help those most in need." The event was attended by the local priest, Francisco Morato, and the delegate of Caritas in Pilar de la Horadada, Pepa Sánchez. Both reminded the gathering of just how important help can be as they specifically asked for food such as sugar, flour, milk or canned tomatoes. The Pilar Council has agreed to collaborate with the initiative and it encourages other institutions to do likewise, "because we can help many people", said Councillor of Commerce, Aurelio Samper. Non perishable food for delivery to Caritas, may be handed into the store during normal business hours where you will be given a small gift as a reward for your support.

CENTRAL BANK POLICY REMAINS DRIVING FORCE ACROSS MARKETS
Market Commentary 12th April It has been a relatively calm week for the financial markets. The main focus was of the minutes released in the US, detailing the Fed’s continuing asset purchases, and in particular that the Fed is trying to get across to the market that it should expect asset purchase to vary depending how the outlook for the US economy develops. This “taping off” guidance is a slightly tweak to existing policy guidance, the line before Wednesday’s minutes was that Quantative Easing would come to an end when labour markets improved substantially. By suggesting varying the $40bn per month in agency MBS and $45bn per month in Treasuries, policy is better defined than some vague notion of “substantial” improvement. Japanese monetary policy is also front and centre in the markets outlook at the moment. The Yen has declined significantly across the markets after the original Quantative Easing decision was announced last week. To recap, the announcement represents Quantative Easing on a completely different scale to previous policy by the Bank of Japan. Almost $1.5 trn Dollars will be pumped into the Japanese economy within two years. In spite of the huge scale of asset purchase, the new Bank of Japan governor Harauhiko Kuroda suggested yesterday that the two per cent inflation target will be pursued flexibly. In central bank parlance that means they are willing to embark on more easing if necessary. We move further into the unknown. Sterling was little changed, set for a second weekly gain versus the dollar, as an industry report showed house prices in the U.K. rose to a five-year high last month. The average cost of a home in England and Wales gained 0.2 percent on the month to 230,078 pounds ($354,000), Acadametrics Ltd. and LSL
On Wednesday the Bank of England release the minutes from this month’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting Property Services Plc said today. Excluding the capital, prices fell 0.1 percent. The pound traded at $1.5382 as of 7:36 a.m. London time, after rising to $1.5412 yesterday, the highest since Feb. 20. It has climbed 0.3 percent this week. Sterling was at 85.15 pence per euro. The Euro fell versus all but two of its 16 major peers amid concern that the region’s debt crisis was escalating as European ministers meet in Dublin to discuss Cyprus, Greece and Slovenia. The 17-nation currency pared a weekly advance versus the dollar after Germany’s Handelsblatt newspaper reported a discussion on direct bank recapitalization from Europe’s bailout fund was “going in circles.” The dollar was set for a weekly decline versus most of its counterparts before a report that economists said will show U.S. retail sales stalled in March. The euro fell 0.2 percent to $1.3072 at 9:27 a.m. London time
after strengthening to $1.3138 yesterday, the most since Feb. 28. Next week on Wednesday sees the Bank of England minutes from this month’s Monetary Policy Committee meeting released, with focus remaining on the vote for further asset purchases. Recent votes on Quantative Easing resulted in a 6-3 split in favour of keeping easing on hold. Any move towards 5-4 would indicate further easing next month and probably drag Sterling lower against its major trading partners. JOINT PILOT FOR EXCHANGE OF TAX INFORMATION The Governments of Spain, Germany, UK, France and Italy have agreed to work together on a pilot instrument for multilateral exchange, automatic and standardized tax information. So notified last week by letter to the European Commissioner for Taxation, Customs, Anti-fraud and Audit, Algirdas Semeta, the finance ministers of the five countries, including Cristobal Montoro. The letter, signed jointly, emphasizes that "the pilot project will not only catch and deter tax evaders but also provide a broader pattern multilateral agreement." In fact, the five countries will invite other EU Member States to join the project and "expect Europe to spearhead the promotion of a global system of automatic exchange of information." In this sense, value the action plan to combat fraud and tax evasion, announced recently by the European Commission. The pilot project is now reported will be based on the exchange model called FATCA. In 2010, the U.S. government promoted a set of rules that are forcing financial institutions worldwide to report foreign accounts of persons and entities in that country. These standards were included in a Tax Compliance Act of foreign accounts (FATCA, in English). Spain, Germany, UK, France and Italy set a common negotiating position with the United States since mid-2012 reached an intergovernmental agreement model, which has been the basis for bilateral agreements of the five countries with the United States. In the case of Spain, the agreement with the U.S. FATCA has already been signed and is awaiting its next signature, once authorized by the Council of Ministers.
by taxpayers in Spain. Treasury notes that all residents in Spain are required to report by 30 April the assets and rights located abroad, the amount exceeding 50,000 euros. Furthermore, in the letter sent to the Commissioner for Taxation, the five countries urge the further implementation of the directive on administrative cooperation and mutual assistance, which makes it obligatory exchange of information, and the effective implementation of the "most favored nation clause." This clause permits a state to benefit from the agreements reached with a third party for another country which has signed an information exchange agreement.
The model FATCA, the U.S. is also negotiating, in turn, with many other countries of the planet, fixed the transmission of information from financial institutions of these countries to the tax authorities, information that may be used by third countries. At the same time, the model minimizes the burdens of tax compliance for these entities. Declaration of goods abroad, this month The Ministry of Finance and Public Administration believes that export the "FATCA exchange model" to other countries and territories would be a breakthrough. Also, would contrast information on assets and rights located abroad that since this year is mandatory declaration

MABS MAZARRON CELEBRATE WITH RACE NIGHT IS A HIT ST GEORGE IN PLAYA FLAMENCA
Close to 90 people attended MABS Cancer Support Group’s Race Night at The Clubhouse, Camposol on Tuesday, 2 April. MABS Mazarrón was pleased to welcome their regular supporters and some new faces at the event. The night started with a presentation to Martine Shindler, who single-handedly raised 1135€ for MABS Mazarrón in last year’s Race for Life, receiving loud cheers and applause from the audience for this awesome achievement. Then, the races began; slowly at first but, as the night progressed, the atmosphere grew more intense and everyone got into the racing spirit. A welcome interval to recharge their glasses also meant that they could enjoy a light-hearted game of ‘Play Your Cards Right’, resulting in six lucky winners of luxury prizes and a further winner taking home 80€ from the Forecast Trimester Game. After the interval, the excitement increased, with the throng growing even louder as a betting frenzy began with the horses being auctioned to hopeful owners. MABS Mazarrón thanks everyone who attended and all the volunteers who helped in making the night such a fantastic success, raising 735€. EVEN MR GRUMPY WAS CONVER TED Dear Editor I thought it was about time I wrote in to give some well deserved credit to some helpful people and say welcome to La Zenia to the girls at Spanish Insurance. I have been insuring with Lisa for years now. She first impressed me with the prices and more so when I got to meet her, the fact that she really seemed to know what she was talking about was like a breath of fresh air. It was a refreshing change to have someone explain how things worked here in Spain and its great to see the other gall's in the offices are following in her footsteps by providing such happy helpful advice. What's even better is that they are now on my door step. I took my grumpy old friend into the La Zenia office. It takes a lot to impress him but he was amazed when sweet CharlieRose explained to him, very nicely may I add, that really he was an old fool for insuring his rather old banger fully comp when he only really needed to be paying for the cheapest insurance. So thank you for making my grumpy old friend not so grumpy! I can only sing Lisa and the rest of the girls in the offices praises for their swift responses when I have needed them over the years. They have always done what they said they would do and looked after me without fail year in year out. Nothing has been too much for them. My advice to anyone needing any insurance is to go see the gall's in either Quesada or La Zenia. I'm sure you will find them as helpful as I have over the years! Keep up the good work gall's and thank you for all your help over the years. Sincerely Mr Brian King Campoamor
GREENS ON THE BALL Dear Editor At the last vote I voted for Pedro Mancebo. Since then last year the refuse collection was abysmal, and the
green rubbish was nonexistent same as the road cleaning, of which there was NONE during the months of July and August. Pedro stated there was a cleaning rota for certain days. The residents were talking about No cleaning for months not weeks. Since Pedro leaving, and Bob and the Green Party taking control, the green clearance has been superb. The road and refuse cleaning has been better than ever. AND THE BEST has been the noise control over the pubs and cafe's. There has been NO CONTROL despite hundreds of denuncias (see the P.S.O.E ) news magazine some year or so ago. WHY? Pedro who do you think is going to vote for you? The tourists? DEFINATELY NOT the RESIDENTS who pay for the infrastructure. The next election neither me, my wife, my daughter or my son will vote for C.L.R. again Eddy Hamlet La Florida ED; Why dont you go along to the regular Q&A Sessions that the CLR hold in La Regia where you will be able to ask Pedro the questions yourself? But whoever you vote for do make sure that you at least cast it, otherwise the Costa will continue to be largely ignored by the city!

TR AGIC DEA TH IN BENIJOFAR Following the news of the tragedy in Benijófar, we have been inundated with messages of shock and expression of how the community has been devastated by the tragedy. Here are a few of those messages... .....We are so shocked at this sad news. We have used this vet in Benijofar several times over the last couple of years and could not fault the service - always so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We too are praying for this lovely family and for the children who have lost both their mother and father. Christine Andrews ......Like all I am very shocked. I am from Belgium and have 2 dogs and 1 cat. During the contact I had with him and his family, I saw love. Panic is here playing, sorry I say it on my Flemish way. Panic is a bad and strange think in our live in stress situations. He and his family took good care about our animals. What can we do here to help or support them?? The family was living from this clinic for animals. I am very sad for the whole family... Ana Rits
Dear Leader, I saw your article this week giving us news updates, entitled “News from Orihuela Costa the town hall informs you”. I just wanted to say that I think this is brilliant and I hope it continues. I especially liked the fiesta calendar. I get one sent to me every three months from Torrevieja and this is the first time I have seen anything like this covering us on the Orihuela Costa, and the news part was also very useful to keep up to date. My only complaint is I still can´t understand the recycling service schedule. Mrs M Baines, La Regia ED; Thank you for your kind words, although we can´t take full credit as is was actually an ini-

We are all in shock my heart goes out to you (the daughter) and to your brother. We are all praying for you both, try to keep strong with much love x Terri .......OMG, he was a wonderful vet and his family were so caring and loving, every time you went into the vets you would get a warm welcome. We are deeply saddened by this event. Tracey ........Our Condolences go out to his 2 beautiful children that have
now lost both Mother & Father. He was a good Vet that was held in high regard throughout the local community of Benijofar in Alicante. Whatever the circumstances were that led to him to committing this terrible crime we will possibly never know. We knew the family very well and appeared a very close loving family that spent their lives caring for sick & stray animals. His wife will be deeply missed by us all. David Pearce ........I hope everyone will respect the family, at this sad time. Nobody can imagine the pain that is around all of them at this time. We are praying for you, stay strong.
machines. The greyhound racing industry is brutal, with injuries, euthanasia, drug abuse and competing gambling gangs and cartels all wanting to suck off these beautiful dogs. Its nice to see a syndicate actually give a damn about the dog for a change. Aaron Cross .....Given the huge number of unwanted and abused galgos in Spain that need taking care of, importing a greyhound from Manchester to Spain is ridiculous. Haven't these retired "racing enthusiasts" made enough money out of greyhounds to begin giving something back to the dogs who are in desperate need? Rufus Lelévrier

Well, here are two more happy stories about doggies on the CB. In recent years I have found many dogs lost in the area of La Plana, Jávea, some without chips. 100% returned to delighted owners.
.....Commercial dog racing funded and controlled by the gambling industry - is dependent on inherent cruel practices for its financial viability. The culling of healthy puppies that fail to chase the mechanical lure or are too slow to 'make the grade'. The destruction of dogs that sustain treatable but 'career ending' injuries on the dangerously configured tracks designed purely for the spectator. The destruction of healthy greyhounds deemed no longer suitable as a 'betting product' - too old or slow - if no retirement home can be found. In 2010 the UK racing industry failed to account for over 10,000 greyhounds bred for British racing - despite much of the data collected by them via the GBGB 'Retirement Forms'. Amy is just one of the lucky ones.

ROUND AND ABOUT TORREVIEJA The five thousand square metres of pine forest destroyed by fire in La Mata will take a decade to recover. Around 70 trees were destroyed when fire took hold at the historic Molino del Agua park, believed to have been started in three separate locations, a similar pattern to a number of similar arson attacks across the area in recent years. CCTV footage of the area is being viewed by the police in an attempt to identify to potential perpetrators of what could so easily have been a fatal fire outbreak.
Nine internationally renowned athletes from Lithuania have been training at Torrevieja´s sports city this week, the latest in an increasing number of international sports performers who are looking to the facilities of Torrevieja to assist in their training regime. They follow on from a group of young Duth athletes who have been using the facilities at the start of the month, and may well lead to more use of the sports complex that is often standing vacant.
The Habaneras shopping centre in Torrevieja has launched a new dance competition for young people, aimed at finding the best dancers between the ages of 4 and 16. Registration is open now for the “Factor H” competition, which will then be held in the mall from the 25th of May until the 6th of July, with groups split into three, aged 4 to 7, aged 8 to 12 and then from 13 to 16, with applicants having to submit a video of themselves dancing, either as a solo performer or a group, with judges choosing the entrants for the first gala showcase on the 25th of May.
The Local Police of Guardamar have expanded their vehicle fleet, with the acquisition of a new 4x4 vehicle which will allow them to patrol in harder to reach areas. The principle aim will be allow the police to patrol the 12 kilometres of beaches better, as well as the rural green areas, allowing for better fire prevention duties to be carried out. Guardamar police now have four normal patrol cars, four motorcycles, two quads and this four wheeled drive utility vehicle. The Izquierda Unida of Almoradí has registered a motion to allocate 5% of the town hall budget to create an employment platform that would provide work to residents who are unemployed, performing contracted tasks such as maintenance and cleaning of recreational areas. The group argues that with more than 3,000 unemployed people in the town, combined with the overall deterioration of public facilities, by finding a solution to mix those looking for work with work that needs completing is a solution that would benefit every resident in the area as people need to, “work to survive”.
Work has started this week to remove the fencing around the entrance to the old harbour of Torrevieja, with around 50 metres set to be removed to widen the entrance from the main coastal road, in the first stage of the remodelling of this once popular area. The fence alongside the historic Mar La Marina is the first section to be removed, which will make an open space opposite the old casino, much as it was prior to the installation of the wall in the 1960´s. In its busier days, the area played host to countless tourists who would arrive by coach to the seaside city, and once a thriving part of the centre of commerce for the fishing, and boat building industries.
The manager of the market at El Olivo has said that he intends to claim compensation if the market is closed. His legal representative says that the Catral government team has not yet notified the facility of closure but having made significant investments, if the market is closed down is will destroy the livliehood of many local people and would be completely unjustified. As such the "citizens will have to pay." The lawyers also criticize the Guardia Civil for their constant harassment, actions which they say are disproportionate and unmotivated. They say that Moroccan traders feel coerced and persecuted by them. Two officers from the Marine Unit of the local police in Santa Pola rescued two fishermen on Wednesday after their boat sank in a in a cove on the coast of Santa Pola. The men are understood to have been fishing aboard a boat, about 3.5 meters long, equipped with a small motor. The two fishermen, 40 and 50 years old, have been transferred to the Hospital General Universitario de Elche with symptoms of hypothermia. According to the police officers, the boat capsized as the two fishermen came to gather in their fishing net. Neither man was equipped with a lifejacket and they were unable to swim ashore, as one of them claimed not to know how to swim. They chose to sit on the hull of the boat and call for help. Fortunately a passing resident spotted the fishermen and alerted the 112 emergency services.

Tuesday 9th April 2013 Stableford Driving up to El Plantio Kenny told me that last Sunday at La Finca Frank and he had finished joined second and after count back he won, so equalizing their match, 1-1. On our arrival at the course it was again sunny, a few clouds and the wind picking up when we started our game, just enough to add a bit of uncertainty to our otherwise flawless style of golf. With 18 players again we went out in 6 groups of three, my company to my delight on the 2nd Lyn Y and Kenny R. For sure you can imagine my expectations to see the master at work. We did start well with 3 for 3 at the 2nd and 4 for 2 at the 3rd. Then suddenly it all went slightly wrong, while Lyn and I scored regularly but nothing spectacular Kenny apparently lost his touch. Possibly a bit too casual his tee shots were off the mark and his putting brilliance was gone, so with growing disappointment he continued the round and two pars at the last holes came too late to save his card. I did feel sorry for him but at the same time I couldn’t ignore feeling relieved that an off day can happen to good players as well. Starting our second half we saw Frank standing at the 6th tee, thumbs up as he just had scored a very good NTP at the 4th, only a few inches from the hole. Clearly Frank had taken the lead again in the April match with Kenny, 2-1. At the presentation the NTPs went to Frank Stanhope on the 4th – almost impossible to beat – and to good old – guns on fire – Gordon Wayne on the 9th hole. A tie for third place with 35 points so after count back George S missed out – bad luck, George – and finishing in third we saw John O’Brien, hcp 10. A tie again for second and first – this time with 36 points – so after the count back second place went to Frank Stanhope, hcp 10 and first place to Ray Housley, hcp 8. Both had one blob so both will receive a minor cut. Anyway well done, you all! Keep the chainsaw in play, be it only just. Next Tuesday’s competition 16th April at El Plantio will be another individual game, Joker this time. Beware that from now on the Tuesday competition will have an early start so put your name down by the Sunday before and make sure to be there on Tuesday on time well before 09.00 (any other day will remain 09.30). See you all in good health! Visitors are welcome, contact Ian Henderson, tel 966716616 or mobile 636116230.
TOURIST GOLFERS BEWARE!! After one of the longest and coldest winters on record back in the UK many tourist golfers can’t wait to head for the sun here in Spain to relax, have fun and play some golf on courses not covered by frost, snow and water. You obviously deserve to pamper yourself after the winter you have had BUT in this relaxed mood don’t forget that there is always someone around to take advantage and separate you from your hard earned cash .I am aware of an increase in break in thefts while people sleep safely in their beds targeting visitors to the area. Don’t for one minute think that this makes this a bad area to visit because I am sure it is no different to anywhere else in the world given the economic crisis. All that I remind you to do is to be vigilant don’t leave those expensive clubs in display in the back of the car and to close and lock all windows, doors and all important window blinds when you go out or to bed and keep an eye out for anyone loitering near your car or accommodation. Too simple I know but very true. If you just keep your wits sharp you will not spend countless hours of your well earned holiday in the Guardia Civil offices filling out crime and claim forms We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. TORREVIEJA GOLF SOCIETY At Altorreal on 8th April. At last it is a pleasure to report that we enjoyed a warm and sunny day for golf for our first visit for 4 years to the Dave Thomas designed course at Altorreal located a few kilometres north of Murcia just off the A30 Albacete highway. This venue used to feature regularly on our rota but in recent years we have tended to use those courses in the area where the travel time is less. Currently the course is offering a very competitively priced green fee and buggy deal and whilst its overall condition could be better, it is an excellent lay out and a challenging test of golf. On the day we decided to play a 4 ball team Stableford “waltz” and in a very close competition the order of the winning teams was determined on count back on points scored over the last 9 holes. The winning scores were: 1st David Banton, Ron Beales, Roy Hills and Lyn Hills with 74 points. 2nd Tom Clarke, Roy Welburn, Charlie Rodgers and Steve Hartshorne with 74 points. The team of Sonny Edling, Yvonne Fogelin, John Saunders and Paul Buckler also finished with a score of 74 points but unluckily missed out on the main prizes on this occasion. Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Tom Clarke, Sonny Edling, Roy Welburn and Sykes Beaumont with the 2’s competition being won exclusively by Tom Clarke. The football card draw was won by Roy Hills. Next week on 15th April we will be playing our President’s Putter Competition at Peraleja with a 2 tee start commencing at 9.00 am with lunch being provided on conclusion of play. Members should check their tee times on the web site. Contact: Geoff Walters, Secretary, Tel 966 763 369 or email geofwalt@telefonica.net
FAIRWAYZ GOLF SOCIETY 24 members turned out on this glorious day to play at Altorreal near Murcia. The course was in superb condition, however, i think there was something wrong with the cups, as each time i putted it spat my ball out further from the hole than i was originally. That's why you won't see my name in the winners list. All that said, it was a good day with good company with some people coming in with good scores. The results were as follows:Gold Category. 1st - Alex Duchart 30pts. 2nd - Gerry Williams 28pts. Best front 9 - Peter Jones 16pts. Best back 9 - Tony Macmillan 15pts. Nearest the pin in 3 - Tony Macmillan. Nearest the pin - No winners. Silver Category. 1st - Barry wood 28pts. 2nd - Phil Bowditch 28pts. Best front 9 - Steven Cleaver 18pts. Best back 9 - Dave Titchen 14pts. Nearest the pin in 3 - No winners. Nearest the pin - No winners. 2 ball competition. - No winners. Thanks to all the members for their company today. The next game is at Alenda on 18th April, 1st tee is at 9:50am. The following game is also at Alenda on 25th April at 9:50 1st tee time. The second game is to play for the Pedro cup, in remembrance of a dear departed friend. Please be at the course 1 hour prior to 1st tee time. Thanks to Tony Macmillan for his organisation, and to Fairwayz Sports Bar for the after game hospitality. New members and guests always welcome, Please contact either Tony Macmillan on 966785781, or Steve Lawrence on 966 63 7449 for further information about our society. Steve Lawrence.

TMGS MATCH AT LA FINCA
KAMEELEON PREMIER DIVISION 12th MARCH The Vega Baja Premier Golf League the second round series of matches for the Premier Division continued at El Plantio Golf, Alicante, and it was a warm sunny 23 degrees. It was the turn of leaders Claptons G.S. to sit this one out and wait to see what their rivals do, and for the other Club 25 GOLF to see if they could strengthen their grip on top spot when they took on second place Las Ramblas who were just six points behind It was Club 25 GOLF who found Las Ramblas in a determined mood with the duo’s of Tom Hardie/Pete Yarwood and John Wheeler/Geoff Biggerstaff winning their matches and Mick Brentnall/Carol Wheeler making a draw, which gave then the bonus points to eliminate the deficit and now are equal in all departments to Club 25 GOLF. The other Club 25 SERENA gave a depleted seven man La Manga a lesson winning the match to move them into third spot and only eight points adrift from the leaders. RESULTS Las Ramblas GS 2.5 (37.5 holes) Club 25 GOLF GS 1.5 (34.5 holes) La Manga North GS 1 (30.5 holes) Club 25 Serena GS 3 (41.5 holes) Bonus points went to Las Ramblas G S, Club 25 Serena G S.
Vistabella Golf – 9th April 2013 It’s was back to our “home” course Vistabella Golf and even before the hollow tinning starts, its greens are in beautiful putting condition, we were also joined by two European Challenge Tour players, Luke Goddard and Sam Menzies who are preparing themselves for the coming season, and what better way than with St James’s! There seems to be a sight on the courses when we play, last time out it was a snake, this time it was Les Yates stripping off to play a shot from the water, did not want to wet his St James’s shirt you understand! As well as the Stableford competition there were two knockout games being played 1 singles and 1 double. It was “Mr Steady” Alan Moody who took first and Ivie Davies second in the Golf Category but both failed in the knockout matches, Alan Moody beaten by Arthur Williams one up and Ivie Davies/Alan Barratt beaten by Rodney Smith/Les Yates by the same score. Gold Category: 1st: Alan Moody 33 points 2nd: Ivie Davies 31 points C/B, 3rd: Les Yates 31 points Silver Category: 1st: Ron “Rocket” Nicholson 31 points 2nd: Malcolm Woods 29 points, 3rd: Ken Hopkins 25 points There were only two Par 3 greens hit for Nearest the Pins Nearest The Pin: Hole 8: Arthur Williams. Oh the joys of teeing off late and in the warmth of the Spanish sun. Today was the Club Championship on a track that, to many excels any other course in the area. And today was Medal Play and it has to be said that, normally, the attendances for the pure game of golf is lower than normal, however, today we had a full house of 36 players. It was evident that the earlier tee times escaped the wind that was to pick up during the day, but not that it deterred anyone and, in fact, the overall winners came from those earlier tee times. As is our norm, we split the attendees into two groups and it has to be said that although only one player played to his handicap, the scoring, for Medal Play was good. The Silver Division was won by one of our Scandinavian members, Per Skarnes with a credible net 75 with George Chapman 2 shots behind in 2nd place and in 3rd place with the same 77 as George, but losing on the countback system. The Gold Division was just as tight with only 3 shots separating the top three and it was our Hungarian member, Alex “The Bruiser” Alfody that had the best score of the day with a level m72 nett par who won the day. In second place was (and I promised I’d not call him Quack Quack again) Richard Wale with a score of 74, pushing Steve Higgins into 3rd place with a score of 75. Best Visitors on the day were Mr B Green with a net score of 73 and A Own with 78. At the end of the day, Alex Alfody secured the title of Club Champion with his net score of 72, the runner up prize going to Richard Wale and 3rd spot to Steve Higgins. Our next game, Wednesday 17th April 2013 , see’s us at the Villamartin golf course, so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966 71 9604. We also run small matches on Friday’s and if you fancy a fun knock around, contact Steve Higgins on 968 97 8188.

Las Ramblas are now in contention, and they take on Claptons who are holding the bottom spot and will want to make a point, while joint leaders Club 25 Golf play similar named Club 25 Serena who also wish to make a point to close the gap. Whatever you say about the VBPGL things are always close and not predictable, determination is the name of the game! So watch this space. The next round in May is at Mar Menor Golf Resort, where the 2011 PGA EuroPro Tour Champs Final was played, so it will not be easy for any of the teams. It’s the turn of La Manga to see what the others do. April 5th was the first anniversary of Busters Golf Society , as we first played as a new society at Alto Real golf course we decided to purchase a trophy to play for every April at the course , the trophy has aptly been named Busters Alto Real Trophy . Although the weather forecast had predicted rain the first drops did not fall until our final four had left the eighteenth green , and even the heavy rain held off until we were safely seated in the Mini Golf bar in Quesada . The course was still recovering from the battering it had received from the recent bad weather and hollow tining but was still in reasonable condition , however I have to say that the greens staff need to mark out area’s that are still recovering and make them GUR . The turnout for the event totalled twenty five player’s , although the elements were kind they did not did not seem to aid our scoring with our best score being 37 points . Our nearest the pins were on the 5th hole Eamon.Gargan , on the 8th Simon Smith , the 10th Barry Grinsell and on the 17th Nikki Ead each receiving a sleeve of 3 Callaway golf balls , best front nine was Simon Smith with 19 points , best back nine Dave Pretty also 19 points both received a shoe bag which was kindly donated by Keith Smith , our best guest was won by Norman Wood with 37 points receiving cash and a sleeve of 3 Callaway balls , in third place was Alan Gifford by means of handicap with 31 points he received a cash prize , our runner up was Preston Ives with 34 points also receiving a cash prize , our winner for the day was Paul Cogan who receive cash , a voucher from Alto real and is the first holder of our Trophy , well done Paul and all of our players. Finally I would like to thank the staff at the Mini Golf Bar for looking after us on our return. Next Month on the 3rd of May we look forward to playing at Vistabella. Barry Grinsell Secretary

RUNNING WILD AT THE 36TH PARIS MARATHON Five stalwarts from Running Wild A.C., Los Dolses, lined up along with the 40,000 entrants from 112 different countries, on the Champs Élysées Ave., prepared for the 8:45 am start. A brisk north wind took the edge off the expected “April in Paris” conditions & the huge numbers of runners involved inevitably affected the “real” finishing times. The 42.2K race took it´s toll but all 5 Running Wild members, supporting the Orihuela Ladybirds´ fund-raising for the Felix Mantilla Skin Foundation, completed the course among the 33,000 finishers. Their finishing order was :- Ingrid Patursson (VW 2) in 4:06:39 ; Howard Bednall (VM 2) in 4:48:42 ; Helen Giles (SW) in 5:03:36 ; Julia Skinner (VW 1) in 5:41:34 & Jim Gavin (VM 4) in 6:03:05. All are to be congratulated for their achievements. Next event for the Club will be the Orihuela 5K, Charity Run for the AECC, on Saturday, 20th., April at 7pm, where a good turn-out is anticipated.

EL RASO GOLF SOCIETY AT ALENDO GC. On Friday the 5th April El Raso Golf Society played it’s monthly stableford competition at Alenda Golf Club. There was a slightly smaller field than usual with 24 members and 2 guests, but miraculously on this occasion everyone arrived without getting lost along the way! Thankfully the rain that was forecast also held off and everyone completed their round without getting wet. Pity the same couldn’t be said for their golf balls! As usual Alenda made for a good test of golf, as reflected in the scoring. The nearest the pins were David Gray hole 3, Marylyn Eckersall (beware the ill golfer) holes 5 and 13, and Bev Fairhurst on hole 16. The best front nine holes was won by David Gray with 19 points, and the best back nine went to Marylyn Eckersall also with a score of 19. Third place overall went to John Fairhusrst with 33 points and second place went on count back to Will York also with a score of 33 . The overall winner with a score of 35 points was Terry Sharley, showing no ill-effects from his recent “trip” to Benidorm. Our old friend the Garden Gnome was duly presented to Joy Gray who
snatched the handsome chap on count back from one very relieved member - mentioning no names Bev! As usual we de-camped to our spiritual home and clubhouse aka Claptons Bar, where we again enjoyed a very welcome and tasty post match meal. Our next event will be on the 3rd May at Vistabella Golf Club. Any enquiries about El Raso Golf Society can be made by contacting the Secretary on 966719711. GOOD FINISH FOR TRAGAMILLAS IN SPANISH ELITE DUATHLON Last Saturday the Spanish National Duathlon was held in the Valencian town of Canet de Berenguer. Fausto López, Jesus Vicea, Alberto Plaza, Alberto Lara, Sergio Gomez and Christopher Vera made up the Club Tragamillas team from Orihuela. With three of the athletes under 20 years of age their finishing position of 22nd from 65 starters was a credit to all of the young athletes. They had hoped to do rather better and felt they were disadvantaged by their very early start. This, added to the fact that much of the run and the bike segment was done in the rain and very strong winds, deprived them of a top ten finish. However a club spokesman said that the result was satisfactory given the youth of the squad which gives a great deal of hope for the future.

SHARKS DEADLY BITE ON TIGERS
ESTRELLA DAMM CRIB LEAGUE
(Los Squalos 14 - Tigers 10) This was a game that the Torrevieja Tigers had to win to keep their title hopes alive as the title will depend on their final game next week against Catagena and other results if Murcia win. This defeat has put a large dent in those ambitions and they came to the game having won 5 on the bounce. However, the young Squalos of San Javier showed great courage and youthful confidence to show it was not going to be an easy game. They tackled the larger players with great effect and moved the ball quickly to their speedy wingers, thus stretching the opposition and sapping their energy. While the visitors had the advantage in the scrums, the Squalos had the edge in the lineouts. Using their weight advantage, the Tigers put the Squalos under pressure in the early scrums. However, after a high speed attack, it was No.8, Alejandro, who kicked a penalty. A quickly taken penalty by his opposite number, Jacobo, took advantage of a retreating defence to score unconverted try. Five minutes later, Alejandro kicked his second penalty and two minutes after that from a scum he added a try to give Los Squalos the lead by 11 points to 5 before substitute, Miguel, was shown a red Card. But the fourteen man Squalos retained their lead at the interval. After the restart, tensions on both sides became more obvious and several players had to be replaced on both teams. A Tigers forward squandered a scoring opportunity and Alejandro added to their disappointment by kicking a long range penalty to open up a nine point gap. In the dieing minutes of the game the visitors adopted more forward orientated tactics to drive towards the try line. They got their reward when big centre, Raphael forced his way through a very tried defence. It was too little too late but the overall cutting edge was won at scrum half, where Fran was quicker and stronger for Los Squalos. Final score Los Squalos 14 - Tigers 10. The photo shows No.8, Alejandro being lifted high to win win the ball
April 8th and week 28 with just 2 weeks remaining and Margaret’s La Siesta are still on top. With 4 points clear over Brian’s Ebony & Ivory Jaguars, they only need to win 1 more match to claim the title – but watch this space. This week The Sharks went to the Ebony and Ivory to take on Keith’s Merlins and came away with a decent win and for the Sharks, Andy and Joe reigned supreme with 3 wins while for the Merlins, Les and Ted went down the suff without a win. Just hanging on to the 2nd spot are Brian’s Ebony & Ivory Jaguars who went over to Bar Meson Galea with high hopes but left after feeling the force of Ayliff’s revived team who had john and Ayliff maximising with 3 wins while for the Jaguars the 3 pairs could only manage 1 win each. Pushing the Jaguars hard and on equal points but with an inferior differential are Val’s Voles from Bar Virgo on their 7th consecutive win and had Ron and Jean on top form with 3 wins while their opponents, Dorothy’s Izzys Bar Magpies who in contrast have lost their last 7, had Martin and John best with 2 wins. Up at The Sportsman John’s “B” team lost their way against a fighting Catorce Lions who had all 3 pairs in there with 2 wins each while for the Sportsman Bruce and Tony dipped their headlights to score a disastrous nothing. Over at TJ’s, Sue’s Jays were entertaining Steve’s marauding Sportsman “B” who won the last 3 legs to clinch the win with 2 pairs gaining 2 wins each while for the Jays only Val and Bernie could match them with their 2 wins. Down at Hoggies Bar, Richard’s Ospreys had an unexpected win against their stablemates the Kestrels led by Russell who was expecting more from his team but saw Brian and Pat fading into the distance without a win, while for the Ospreys all 3 pairs dominated with 2 wins each. Also at home in Hoggies Bar, my Falcons team scraped a win in a last gasp finish against John’s Catorce Lions who had newish members Mick and Carol flying high with 3 wins while for the Falcons we had 2 pairs with 2 wins each. Finally in Izzys Bar, Mary’s Peacocks felt at home against Derek’s Bar Virgo Robins in a close match with the Peacocks just squeezing home with the help of 2 pairs on 2 wins each while for the Robins only Alan and Joe could keep up with their 2 wins.
ABBEY ANGLING MATCH FISHING By Terry Screen We fished the 3rd round of the Spring Series once again at the Embalsa de Pedrera on the 9th April, as most of the other venues are still flooded. The bridge between Benijofar and Rojales which normally only holds a trickle of water through the gully is flooded bank to bank with approx four foot of water. The levels on the Pedrera have been dropping over the last couple of months, but rose about three inches during the match, work has also broken out were the water runs in to the lake and no one knows what is happening at the moment, we will have to wait and see what the outcome will be. Fishing has now begun to improve with the warmer weather arriving, and the best double weight figure so far this year taken on hemp and tares. This week’s match also incorporated the Inter club Round Town News 5th round match which was won by Abbey Angling with 22 points and Rods & Reels with 20 points. With just one match left to fish Abbey are in the lead. 1st Ian (The Wizard) Dalzell with 16.780kg fishing the feeder and waggler using hemp and tares, 2nd Bob (The Major) Rafferty with 11.880kg fishing the feeder using maggots, 3rd Richard (The Lion heart) King with 11.420kg fishing the feeder using corn All details are available on the web site www.abbeyangling.com or from the match secretary Terry Screen on 965 32 8368

EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON K.O. SINGLES QUALIFYING ROUND. LADIES: Rendezvous Board No 1. Leah Chesworth (Madigans). Jane Kelly( Breeze Bar) Board No 2. Shirley Roberts (Busters). Babs Warren ( Busters) MEN: Hub. Mark Todd (Gogartys). Ali O'keef ( Gogartys). Gogartys. Alex Nikolov (Meerkats). Bill Warburton (Gogartys) Breeze Bar. James Brown (Gogartys). Phil Waller ( Bulls) Madigans. Terry Haganaars ( Bulls). Joe Miller ( Hyenas). Not too many fireworks at the Hub venue this week for the qualifying K.O. Singles round. A decent field was unable to rise to the occasion however, not surprisingly two of the favourites qualified, one of them by the skin of his teeth. Ali O'Keef must have wondered where his recent good form had disappeared to. An unconvincing victory over Mike Snow 2-1, although he did finish off the Breakaways man with a fine 76 game shot ( S20,S16,D20), was not the O'Keef we have been used to seeing over the past few months. The experienced Snow had darts at a double to overcome the Gopher but didn't take a perfect opportunity to oust the popular Cork man. His next challenger Tomas Piwcjyk the young Meerkat of Polish origin, didn't fair much better, missing vital double opportunities, consequently losing 2-0. There was some consolation for the youngster however, an excellent 180 in the second leg, forced O'Keef to reply with a 140. It gave the Meerkat a chance to take his opponent to a decider, but it wasn't to be and O'Keef now finds himself where expect in the last 8. Team mate Mark Todd fared better, qualifying without dropping a leg, taking care of the Hawkins family, firstly father Rob with a fine 106 out ( T20,S6,D20), credit to Hawkins though, he stuck in there but could only muster a lone ton in the two legs. Junior Hawkins, or Jake as he is better known also fell to Todd, by the same score and just needed to be a little more consistent on his semis to have put pressure on the Gogartys man. He showed signs of what he can do earlier, when despatching Jay Sharp 2-1 and then Dave Wright 2-1, with a creditable 63 game shot ( S17,S14,D16) and several tons. Next time hopefully. Todd was a touch too strong winning the match on D10. The sole Bulls represen-
tative Martin Hastings fell at the first hurdle to young Piwcjyk 2-1. At Gogartys, Big Bill Warburton the Gogartys captain, enjoyed the slight advantage of a home draw, totally negated by the fact he had to organise the evening. All credit to the big man he qualified by taking out the very useful Hub man, Lee Holtham in a tight 2-1 match after Holtham had missed D12 for the match. Holtham paid for the miss with Big Bill taking out 64 ( T8,D20). In the other half of the draw, the fancied Alex Nikolov had the misfortune of facing team mate John Eyre. As expected the match was close, Nickolov took the first on T20,D12. Eyre replied with T20,D5, but winning the bull for the throw in the third, Nikolov just managed to reach the double first for an excellent victory over the dangerous Eyre. Nickolovs next opponent Ray Harvey ( Busters) was just as tough. Harvey won the bull and started off with 85, Nickolov replied with 140, a 100 and 81 followed from Harvey, but both players found their finishing a little rusty, eventually Nickolov found D10. Both players flexed their throwing arm in a high scoring second leg, to leave both requiring a double, Nickolov hit it first for a 2-0 and qualification. Warburton found himself against one of his own players for the other qualifying place, Kevin Fitzpatrick. A close game followed, both highs and lows, but Big Bill triumphed finishing off D9 in each leg for 2-0. With only 2 to qualify from each venue, Madigans was to be a grave yard for some of Euronics league best. The much fancied Gopher, Paul Easton quickly despatched league vice chairman Derek Kingsbury 20 both via D10 with 3 tons thrown in, not unexpected. His next opponent Hyena Joe Miller was a little tougher. Miller hit 100,140 in the first, but it was Easton who found the double first on D5. In the second Miller continued his high scoring with 100,125 and finally D10 for one apiece. Easton couldn't quite find his usual touch and Miller took full advantage nailing D17 for the match and semi finals night. Reigning champ Terry Hagenaars was in the other half of the draw and opended up with a 140 against Misfit Karl Cooper who replied with a ton and then casually planted his dart in D10 to go one up. Two tons from the champ and D10 was the Bulls mans response for 1-1. An indifferent decider ended on D20 for the Hag to go through. Preventing Hagenaars proceeding further was next in line Graham Dunning who had earlier despatched fellow Bull man 2-0. Dunnings only response to the powerful scoring of the Flying Dutchman was a single ton against a barrage of high scoring including 3x100, 1x140 a D2 and D20 for the match and a real chance of defending his title.
There was some cracking darts down at Breeze Bar with yet another Gogartys man making the semi's, James Brown. Accompanying him is Phil Waller representing the Rendezvous Bulls. Brown recorded a fine record of 4x100, 1x121 and 2x140 during the evening whilst Wallers scores although slightly less 2x100, 125 and 140 also included a great 99 out. Last seasons finalist Busters Mark Filer fell to Brown in the semi final, but his scores definitely stand up to scrutiny 3x100, 1x139 and 3x140 plus a 79 game shot to boot. John Bowden, playing on his own turf was unlucky not to qualify, but still acquitted himself well scoring 2x100, 2x140 and a 89 game shot. Down a the Rendezvous the Ladies played on two boards to determine the four semi finalists for May. The hot news is the 2012 and 2011 champions Amanda Skinner and Sonya Cooper are both out. Skinner fell foul to Jane Kelly of the Breeze Bar in the first round 2-1 who then went on to beat Simone De Lacy 2-0, the victor over Diane Voyce in the first round. A name now featuring regularly, Leah Chesworth, figured well on the same board, taking first Zoe James 2-0 and then her possible future mother in law Sonya Cooper 2-1. On board 2 the Busters pair of Shirley Roberts and Babs Warren avoided each other to qualify for the semi finals in May. Warren will be hoping to go one better this time after losing out to Amanda Skinner last season. Warren took out one of the favourites Tracey Simpson 2-0 on D4 and D18 after she had disposed of Sarah Simpson 2-0 in the first round. Meanwhile Shirley Roberts faced Debbie Mackleston, she of Euronics fame. The league sponsor scored well as usual, but couldn't match the finishing of Roberts. A D10 first leg was followed by a S14,S14,Bull for a 2-0 result. Her next opponent Lorraine Cox really put the pressure on with scores of 83,121,66,83 but couldn't nail the precious double. Roberts did on D3 and when requiring 50, didn't risk the Bull, but used two darts finishing on S10,D20 for 2-0. Should be a great semi's night on May 9th at Breakaways for both Gogartys Ladies Singles and the Mens singles and pairs. Everyone welcome, so support your favourite player and enjoy some complimentary fayre courtsey of Sarah Simpson and Jay Sharp. Same magnificent raffle prizes will also be on offer via the generosity of Euronics ( Blue Lagoon ) and Treasure Chest ( Villa Martin ) and participating bars within the Euronics league. Listen to darts chit chat on Exite Radio 89.2FM or 93.1FM live on Saturday between 3 and 4pm. Paul Durrant, League Chairman.

COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB REPORT .......
LEADER
by Lynne Bishop
By Jackie Breslin Good news, people are actually reading these reports and the feed back has been good, in as much not everyone agrees with what I say, “ Why was my game not mentioned?, better than the ones you picked out”,,,,,,,,,,,,in your opinion, but that’s good and it may prove that the ones I highlighted as interesting might end up being damp squids, and I get a lot of “ I told you so” I could have been really controversial and named my semi finals choices in all disciplines, that would have caused some discussion and some choice adjectives, most of which could not be published. Moving on to this years triples here are some of my thoughts on this years draw. Ladies Triples : Last years winners cannot defend the title due to all 3 changing clubs, however Gina Streeter, Sally Cordell have joined forces with Shelia Cammack and have been drawn against 3 dark horses from Tenerife so this result is very unpredictable. I like the look of the game between Kate Morris’s triple from Costa Del Sol and the Lynn Greenland three, also appealing is the tie involving current International Yvonne Bryden and Deidre Leeming, who skipped the 2011 winning rinks team. The 2011 Triples winners, namely, June Jones, Pam Locket and Ann Holland have moved clubs but have stayed together and play Ann Allen’s triple.
QUESADA BOWLS CLUB ByDoug Beattie The SABA Harrier league got under way this week & well done to Quesada Comets who had a convincing win against La Siesta Hornets as they won 14-0 & 118 shots to 83 on Monday 8th April Unfortunately we did not manage to keep the momentum going on Fri when we played Quesada Lancasters so it was a bit of a needle match but the Comets just got beat 8-6 by the Lancasters so well done to all. Quesada Bowling Club Committee & Members pass on there condolences to the family of Viv Zelin of La Marina Bowling Club who passed away last week may she rest in peace. Quesada ran a 2 day competition to replace the Miralgo & there was a decent turn out considering it was put together at short notice A big hand to Jackie Breslin for organizing it all & well done to Brian Robertson & his team for their win in the final & for donating their prize money to the Childrens Home in Elche, a very kind gesture. Can all Club Captains please ensure there reports are emailed in as soon after the Game as possible so they can be included in our report to the Leader which is sent off no later than 6pm on the Friday prior to publication.
The Gremlins got into last weeks report and as you all missed it so much I have submitted some of it again along with this weeks match reports. LA SIESTA BOWLS CLUB By Norman Adcroft Easter Bonnet 1st April. On Easter Monday we held a fun day at the club which was open to all but with the bowling taking a little twist! Out went the regulated rules we’re all used to, and in came the less formal method of Crown Green Bowling. We played a 3-2-1 game, and with about 14 teams playing on an undivided full green, quite a few collisions between woods occurred which added to the spirit and ambience of the game. After the ‘game’ a raffle to aid Club funds was held, and a best Easter Bonnet competition judged by William Jordan Page, Sue and Bill Jordan’s Grandson, which was won by Bernie Mc Donnell for the Ladies and Gary Thorpe for the Men. Thanks to Sue Jordan and Margaret Hunter for organising a great day, and Lyn and Jim for the superb Hot Cross Buns. Harrier League Hornets and Wasps. Monday 8th April. Not the best start the Hornets had hoped for playing an afternoon away game at Quesada against the Comets. Losing on all rinks the result was 14-0 to the Comets, with them taking the shots 118-83. The result though does not represent the games played, most games being very close right up to the end. Better luck on Friday Hornets. The Wasps had a better day playing a morning home game 12-2 against El Rancho winning five out of six rinks and taking the shots 119-69. Winners were, Barbara Cooper, Dave Eccles, Jack Cooper 20-13, Anne Heath, Robert Heath, Steve Pond 30-4, Joy Gardiner, Sue Jordan, Jean Cooper 20-13, Yo, Brian Gardiner, George Richardson, 20-13, Jean Murphy, John Ball, Dave Livesey, 15-12. Chicken and Eggs 10th April. Chicken, Eric Picton, Wine, Brian Thomason, Eggs, Dave Wade. VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB Wk Commencing 8th April Monday saw the start of the new SABA Leagues with the Vistabella Greeners playing their game at home to Quesada Lancasters. The Lancasters proved to be tough opposition and only two of our rinks managed to produce a win. Peter Cadwell, Gordon Gowland and John Eustace and Ken Savage, Audrey Sinclair and Allan Sinclair were our two winning teams. Friday produced a big improvement with a visit to San Luis to face their Mosquitoes the Greeners won by 10 points to 4 and 99 shots to 92. Winning rinks were Sheila Cox, Pauline Rafferty and Pat Rafferty, Ken Savage, Audrey Sinclair and Allan Sinclair, Lesley Prockter, Brian Pointon and Diane Hudson and Peter Cadwell, Mike Cox and Russ Hudson. The Fairways had started their games a week earlier with a visit to Monte Mar and went down 6 points to 8 in a very tight game only losing by 8 shots overall, our three winning teams were Ann Rudkin, Martin Foulcer and John Rudkin, Stuart Allman, Les Barber and Richard Lee and Olwyn Ratcliffe, Mac Maclean and Brian Dunn. The Fairways also produced a much stronger performance on Friday beating La Marina Pilots by 11 points to 3 and 112 shots to 95. Winning performances came from Ann Rudkin, Martin Foulcer and John Rudkin, Stuart Allman, Les Barber and Richard Lee, Beryl Regan, Bill Corbishley and Mike Regan and Sandra Burrows, Neil Burrows and Jenny Bowman backed up by a draw for Gail Watson, Ian Kenyon and Fred Willshire. During the week the club also paid a visit to Almeria Province and played three matches two against the strong Indalo Side and one against Almeria Bowls Club. The two games against Indalo were close fought matches with each team winning on three rinks each time, with very close shot counts on both days but over the two games Indalo won by 3 shots. Our final game at Almeria Bowls club was much more successful where we won on 4 of the 6 rinks with a shot advantage of 114 to 91. EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB ......... On Saturday, 6 April, the Emerald Isle held their annual Les McCracken Trophy Match against seven invited Clubs. Les was one of the founding members of the Emerald Isle Bowls Club and was elected President. Unfortunately he passed away just two years later, hence the Trophy in memory of him. After rain on Friday night, we crossed our fingers for a dry day on Saturday and as it turned out we had blue sky but a chilly wind. After four hours bowling, 7 x 4 ends, at the end of the game we all sat down to a drinks, bowls of soup and tasty baguettes, after which the winners were announced. With +18 shots, Marilyn Shatwell, Elwyn Moris, Peter Jarrold & Roy Rawlings took the Trophy. Runners up with +12 shots were Barbara Collins, Mike Petty, Gerald Shatwell and Brian Duff. Well done the Isle, and thanks to everyone involved. On Sunday, 7th, we had our monthly Chicken & Egg match, again played in sunshine with the usual rules applying. The Spider came first with Sheila Howcroft winning a bottle of Ponche. The main prizes were as follows: Outright winner - Sandra Kavanagh, runners up - Brian Duff and Christine Pickup. Lowest scoring lady was Lin Harris and the losing

man can't give his name as he writes this column. In any case, I've now completed the set! A special thank you goes to Marina Sol Bar & Restaurant for donating the prize of a meal for two for the winner. On Monday, 8th, the Vulcans started their short season with a home game against Horadada Hawks. Again the sun came out and gave us a beautiful morning to roll the first jack. The Vulcans opened up with a good win on four of the six rinks, giving us a 10 points to 4 win with a shot difference of 104 to 88. Unfortunately, as Vulcans Captain, I announced the final result before the 'friendly' game had finished and made my apologies immediately afterwards for my lack of foresight it certainly won't happen again! Our best winning rink was 27 shots to 8 attained by Sandra & Brian Kavanagh and John Wood. The Victors visited Country Bowls Foxes on the same day and, like all foxes around the world, were very hard to catch - and so it proved but with three wins each it came down to shot difference. The Foxes came out on top with 107 shots to 89 giving them 8 points to EI's 6. We'll have to think about putting the traps out when they visit us for the return match, won't we?
EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB Our first fixture of this year’s Hurricane League was at La Siesta against The Wasps and yes, shorts were the better idea. We started well, but in the end The Wasps took advantage of the home mat and overcame our resistance on 5 of the rinks and had a good shots advantage. But it was a good morning in good company and Wasps deserve their win. Irene Thomson, Richard Needham and Alex Morrice 4-30. Maxine Wright, Mick Ager and Rod Wright 13-20. Brian Taylor, Ron Edwards and Eddie Thomson 12-15. John Cleal, Sue Rainbow and Dave Whitworth 18-13. Janet Gardner, Rob Clark and Jim Rainbow 13-20. TORRY TRIUMPH IN EPIC BASEMENT BATTLE CATARROJA CF ..............1 FC TORREVIEJA .............3 Back in late November, Torry hammered rock bottom Catarroja for 6, in their first ever match at Nelson Mandela Stadium. That day Catarroja were simply awful, but in this return fixture inside Estadio Mundial 82, they made the visitors work hard for these much needed, nay vital, 3 points. Although Jorge & Villanueva were suspended, Torry welcomed back Rafa to stiffen up the defence. Joserra's men came out with all guns blazing. Luis Carlos, then Koeman, forced Catarroja's keeper to make important saves, before the latter blazed inches over the bar following a determined solo run. They had a real let off midway through the half, however, when a fierce drive hit the underside of the bar, as the hosts grew in confidence. But on the half hour mark, Torry were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position. Even though the wall blocked the shot, it fell nicely for
Luis Carlos, who coolly put his side one up. Things got better when Dani scored directly from a free kick out on the right wing, as Torry doubled their advantage. But back came the hosts, who thought they had scored when Tur dropped the ball into the net, but thankfully the ref adjudged that he had been fouled. Twice in dying 1st half mins, Gasch found himself in great goal scoring positions, but both times he shot straight at a relieved Catarroja keeper. On 53 mins, the deficit was cut when Catarroja scored, then straight from the restart, Gasch did at last find the net, restoring the visitor’s 2 goal cushion. Only a last ditch save from the home keeper denied Koeman a goal he so richly deserved, as both sides were giving their all. A Catarroja thunderbolt just shaved the bar, then Luis Carlos also hit the woodwork. Torry finished strongly, with Gasch seeing his drive blocked, Manu shooting into the side netting, and Koeman having a strong appeal for a penalty denied. Next up for Torry are playoff contenders La Nucia, who visit Nelson Mandela Stadium on Sun 21 Apr, ko 5pm.

MIL PALMERAS AT THE TORREVIEJA CUP Last weekend saw CF Mil Palmeras enter the prestigious Torrevieja cup Semana Santa which took place at the Ciudad Deporte in Torrevieja from Thursday 28th until Sunday 31st March. After a meal served up at the Abbey Tavern the clubs main sponsor it was off to the inscription and age check at the habaneras shopping centre where all players received a tournament tee shirt and the it moved on to Torrevieja town hall where 4 members of every team were invited onto the stage to sing a team song and wave a flag of their country if origin
where Mil Palmeras were given the St george cross as we obviously have English players in our ranks. Friday and Saturday saw the football start and both Mil Palmeras teams were drawn in tough groups against opposition from Madrid and Elche. After four rounds of games neither team managed to progress from their group but it was great experience for all the players and at the fiesta on Saturday evening Mil Palmeras did win the animation song and managed to not go home empty handed.

POW STUNS ROMANIAN WITH SECOND ROUND KO Moving steadily along whilst quietly plying his trade, it surely won’t be very much longer before the unassuming Ricky Pow really does emerge onto the international boxing stage. After Friday night in Daya Nueva, where he knocked out the experienced Romanian Mihai Macovei in two comfortable rounds, commentators from around the world are beginning to wake up to the talent and the undoubted potential that this young brit enjoys. Having lost narrowly to the likes of current European Light middleweight champion Alexander Abraham, who is now undefeated in 25, the opponent on Friday night was Mihai Macovei, the Romanian number 3, who was expected to serve up a stiff test for the 26 year old Pow in what was hoped to be a final eliminator for the vacant WBC Mundial Hispanic title, a title that would lift ‘the Prince’ as he has been dubbed, into the top 20 light heavyweights in the world. Pointing to a decent professional career of 20 professional fights against some quality opposition, Alberto Gonzalez, Ricky’s trainer and manager, told the Leader last week that Macovei would be no pushover for Ricky and he expected to see his fighter gain both good experience and ring time against Friday’s opponent. In front of officials from the WBC it was important that his charge got off to a good start as Macovei himself was known to be quick out of the blocks but in the event, and despite his reputation, the Romanian offered little threat. Pow bossed the fight from the opening exchanges as he kept the 37 year old at bay with a series of combinations and as the left jab opened Macovei up Pow hurt the Romanian on more than one occasion in the opening round. Growing in confidence the 2nd got underway with Pow inflicting
The Hispanic title would lift Ricky into the world’s top 20 heavy punishment on his opponent and when the same combination had the visitor down mid way through the round the writing was already on the wall. Unfortunately as Macovei got back to his feet following the knock down he seemed to turn awkwardly on his knee which immediately saw him drop back to the canvas. Following the count the ringside doctor confirmed that the Romanian
had badly twisted his knee. “It was a genuine, if somewhat unfortunate, injury,” he said. “The knee was very badly swollen within minutes of the boxer returning to his dressing room.” If Macovei wasn’t impressed with Ricky Pow going into the fight, I'm willing to bet that he is now following the quickest defeat of his boxing career and one that cannot have failed to impress Pow’s steadily growing following of fans and admirers. In the evening’s other contests Torrevieja’s Magomed Azuev stopped Romania’s Viorel Boltoc in the opening round of his fight to record the 3rd win of his fledgling career while in the eagerly anticipated ‘Feminino’ contest Andrea from Daya Nueva beat her Torrevieja opponent Rosi ‘La Chana’ on points. Following his win it now seems likely that Pow will meet Spain’s light heavyweight champion Gabriela Campillo for the vacant WBC Mundial Hispanic title later in the year. But if the fight is to attract the media attention it really needs it will most likely take place in Campillo’s home city of Madrid. And Campillo really is a quality opponent. Having fought all over the world, including Texas and the famous Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, the Spaniard has boxed for a number of European and World titles. As such Pow will most certainly need to raise his game. With this in mind WBC official Jamie Parry told the Leader that Pow would quite likely have one more fight before he meets Campillo. “We need to see him in action against one more suitable opponent and then we will let him loose on Campillo” he said.
