SPAIN TO INTRODUCE TAX ON SUNSHINE

There are few places in Europe that get as much sunshine as Spain, a benefit that has propelled the country to the forefront in both tourism and in the development of solar energy. Indeed there is so much electricity gathered from the sun that much of it is now being exported. But how long for you might wonder as it seems a dark cloud is now gathering over many of the country’s small-

est collectors. Just last week Spain announced that it is about to tax sunshine. Many experts agree that the proposal is simply to shore up the country’s heavily subsidized energy industry. The government has announced that it is to introduce a new tax on electricity generated from solar power or any other renewable on site resources. The tax is the subject of a new bill that is going through parliament, albeit at this stage only as a draft proposal which is currently being reviewed by industry regulator CNE. Continued on Page 2

Jose Donoso, the managing director of Spain’s solar lobby group UNEF, is outraged, saying “The decree is an attack on market freedom as it aims to prevent people from competing with established utilities. It’s as though they are charging you when you turn off your electric heaters and start to use a wood burning stove.” This extraordinary move will make self-generated solar power more expensive than electricity taken from the grid, rendering such systems uneconomical. Information suggests that the new tax will apply to all installations of 100 kW or less. Domestic systems with less than 10kW would have to pay 27 per cent more, according to the lobby group. Payback time for domestic solar systems would be extended to almost 35 years from about 12 years that the solar power industry currently estimates. The government says that the country currently produces far more power through solar generation than it needs with total capacity exceeding peak demand by up to 60%. This latest move, seemingly aimed at limiting the growth of rooftop solar installations, will knock the industry back years. The Spanish Wind Energy Association (AEE) said the changes in their current form are retroactive, discriminatory and arbitrary and would have a profound impact on the industry. "AEE considers that if the regulation is passed as it currently stands, the impact would be out of proportion and the sector could suffer a torrent of finan-

Tuesday, 20th August, 2013 cial problems, manufacturing plants closures and job destruction," it said in a statement recently. However the Minister of Industry, José Manuel Soria López, says that the levy is justified because those grid-connected consumers, who produce their own power through a solar installation, can also benefit from the back-up provided by the power system. Jose Donoso, however, suggests that the government is keen to control the growth on solar power because of the impact it is having on the national system. “This is a blatant attack on market freedom,” he said. Consumers already pay gridaccess fees that are enough to support the power network.” Environmental group Greenpeace has come down firmly on the side of solar power urging the government to scrap the bill, saying politicians have been cajoled by Spain’s biggest utilities. The government could control growth with a quota system limiting installations to as much as 400 megawatts a year, a level that wouldn’t affect the system, according to UNEF. “We’re not asking for subsidies, just that the new fee is scrapped,” Donoso said. “Such a tax doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world.” Don’t think the cunning of Spain’s politicians and capitalists will go unnoticed in other parts of the world either. So if there is a lesson here, it would seem that whenever there is a profit to be made, watch out for the underhanded ability of government and large corporations to work in cahoots, at the inevitable expense of the ordinary man in the street.

‘THE CAMPOVERDE STORY’. BY VAL THUNEM There was a new arrival on the Costa Blanca this week. This arrival came in the form of a unique book called ‘The Campoverde Story’. Why a book on Campoverde? The reason being that until the 1960s there was no such place as Campoverde. The land was part of rural area where very small pine trees and scrub grew and the place inhabited mainly by rabbits. Where is Campoverde? Drive along the N-332 between Torrevieja and Cartagena and turn left at Pilar de la Horadada. After going through this small town keep straight on until the road turns into the CV925. After 5km lies the village of Campoverde. Why write a book a b o u t Campoverde? B e c a u s e Campoverde is a gem of a place! This delightful village is very international and self-contained with its services. Apart from the usual businesses, it has its own branch of the local Ayuntamiento, a medical centre, a dentist, two chemists and two vets’ practices. It also has, among its residents, people who lived in Campoverde when there was nothing there except three houses. It has taken two years for the research to be completed which has included interviewing many of the pioneers of many nationalities, both in Campoverde and its nearest neighbour, Pilar de la Horadada. The timing of this book has been crucial as many of the original residents have either left Spain or have died. The majority of the remainder are now in their later years, so it was essential to interview them

while their memories were still clear and vivid. This unique book, complete with photographs, includes the history of Campoverde, stories of some of the residents, anecdotes and also has the highs and the lows from the earliest times to the present. This edition, a paperback with over 2 0 0

pages, h a s b e e n p u b lished in English by ‘uncafe taller grafico’ in Pilar de la Horadada. It is now being translated into Spanish with the Spanish edition being available as soon as possible. This is not a book that can be found on bookshelves of shops. Because of the high cost of printing, the author, Val Thunem, wishes to keep the sale price as low as possible. In order to do this she is selling the book herself from the front terrace of Matilde’s the newsagents in Campoverde every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings from 10am until noon. Orders can be placed by sending an email to campoverdestory@hotmail.com at a cost of 10€ plus package and posting.

RO ADSIDE PROSTITUTION AND LOCAL T OURISM

The Association of Promoters and Builders in Torrevieja and on the Vega Baja (Procosta) denounced last week what they say is the "deplorable image" created by the presence of prostitutes on the region’s streets. They demanded the urgent introduction of new legislation for fining anyone who uses their services. In a press release made public last week the group has demanded that the City Council urgently put in place appropriate measures to "eradicate prostitution from the streets." They say that while local business people are striving every day to improve the image of this part of the Costa Blanca their work is quickly undone by the prostitutes and the people who use them. The association, chaired by Antonio Navarro, said that the Torrevieja Council has already made some efforts, through the Local Police Group (Udipo), to identify many of the girls who work on the streets but beyond that there has been little action. Navarro asked that traffic control cameras at roundabouts and main intersections be used to

monitor their activity and once identified the police should then act. He also said that the fact that they could be caught and identified on camera would also deter many ‘would be’ users of employing the prostitutes services. The police, however, say that they do not possess the manpower to curb the presence and subsequent activities of prostitutes on the streets, particularly in the areas where they are known to be where they are prevalent, along the avenida de las Cortes Valencianas, the CV-90 or the Ronda Ricardo Lafuente and local streets. In the press release Procosta suggest that Torrevieja should follow the examples of big cities like Barcelona where the problem has been almost eradicated through harsh sanctions, where clients can face fines of between 1,000 and 1,200 euros, increasing the amount by 300 euros if found to occur within 200 feet of a school. What the organization don’t make clear, however, is what they consider the alternative to be to prostitutes selling their services along the side of the road.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.

THE CYNICAL EXPAT The definition of ‘cynicism’ appears to have changed over the years. I have always understood the definition to be ‘a sneering faultfinder’, yet later definitions appear to embrace the overall discontent of modern society. It is currently a definition that refers to the belief that people are motivated by self-interest, because they are distrustful of human integrity or sincerity. Cynics are therefore distrustful of the motives of others, and are contemptuous of the human race as a whole. I find this view to be both depressing, disappointing and a likely cause of mass suicide. Spending much of my life working with children and young people was always refreshing and exciting, because children have no understanding of cynicism. It does not come naturally to them. It is learned and spreads like a systemic poison from their elders, as they grow older. Of course, at the right time and in the right place, cynicism can be amusing. Recently reading a couple of books by Paul O’Grady, of Lily Savage fame, there is a healthy dose of cynicism, laced with a tad of realism, but with a generous dollop of hope for the future of the human race, as well as a positive view of the human spirit. Cynicism is closely linked to sarcasm, which I also detest, and fully agree that it is the “lowest form of wit’. It is not clever and rarely amusing. However, have you noticed that many weaker comedians, as well as many Internet blogs and posts seem to thrive entirely on cynicism and sarcasm nowadays? I suspect that much of this is because it is easier to vocalise one’s true feelings and frustrations about the nature of society, the recession, government and general woes, and cynicism is a simple way for the less articulate to be shrilly heard, and to let off

steam. So, I guess in that sense, it does have a kind of purpose. If you truly want to witness cynicism at its very best and loudest, the best place for it to be enjoyed is to be sitting in the haze of a British bar for expats in Spain. There you will quickly hear pure hatred, bigotry and cynicism at its delicious best, mostly fed and nurtured by regular readings of the Daily Hate. Most decent people will wince at the opinions raised about the European Union, the government (any government), race, religion, hanging and flogging, Muslims, the cabbage pickers of Lincolnshire, Prince Charles and, above all, Spain. I never cease to be amazed by the “my glass is half empty” brigade, where the country that has become their home in the sun is often the brunt of the “they do it better in Wigan brigade”. Does Spain really owe them a living in the sun? Many expats are angry that the value of their property (if they own one) has fallen, the sun doesn't shine as much and it is too cold, or the sun shines much more and it is too hot. Many go on to express their feelings about the health service (that they have not paid into), together with a lack of pork pies and “real bacon”, as they put it. Many Brit expats refuse to learn the language, or even make an attempt at it, will only use a British tradesman, because they will be “ripped off by the Spanish” and will only visit a private British doctor if they are sick. If the truth be known, most expats will get a far better job done at a lower price by a Spanish tradesman, or better care provided by their local health centre. In addition, many simply do not understand the euro and what it stands for, and are bitterly upset when the euro gains in value against the pound. They still call the UK “home” and generally refuse to commit to expat life, other than to spend endless starlit nights in Brit bars. The cynical expat then wonders why it has all gone so badly wrong, they have to pack their bags and return from where they came. Once back in the UK, the failed expat can now eat as many pork pies and as much bacon as their cho-

lesterol intake will allow, yet will continue to moan bitterly, but this time it will be about the UK, the health service, the government and how much better things were in Spain, where the sun shone. If only they had not left... The message is clear. Be positive, make the most of new opportunities or challenges that present themselves, and above all, try to put something back. I have met so many fulfilled and happy expats in Spain, and this appears to be their secret. We all have bad and frustrating days from time to time, but even these can be exciting and provide a lesson to be learned, or how to do it better next time, and this is the true essence of expat life. As we are currently learning, many Brits are not good Europeans. However, if we really do want to make a success of expat life, let us look on the positive side, count our many blessings, adopt a “my glass is half full” attitude and, finally, cut out the moaning, sarcasm and cynicism. Most of us really do not want to hear it. T ORREVIEJA CLAMPDO WN MO VES PROBLEMS ALONG THE CO AST

The problem with the illegal sale of counterfeit goods has not disappeared; it is just the location that has changed. Following the crackdown by the Guardia Civil and Policia Locale in Torrevieja the vendors, most of whom originate from the sub sahara, have simply moved a few kilometers, either up or down the coast to the beaches of Los Locos and La Mata, coastal towns of Vega Baja and even into the neighboring region of Murcia Originally many residents were skeptical about the effectiveness of the police crackdown in Torrevieja which began during the second week of July, particularly when they saw images and media reports of the violence between the vendors and the police. But four weeks on the local police joint patrols, coordinated by the Civil Guard, say that their deployment was well worthwhile as there have been no recent cases in the town, particularly in the areas where the vendors formerly concentrated their efforts, los paseos de Juan Aparicio, Libertad and Vista Alegre. However, away from these areas, and the main tourist establishments of the city, there are still dozens of commercial and catering establishments which have begun to see an increase with the same hawking problems. The most significant difficulties would now seem to occur every Friday with the opening of the market, one of the largest in the Valencian Community, as many Senegalese vendors attempt to display their wares in the same places as licensed traders, all of whom pay municipal fees to

attend the Torrevieja market every week. Last week there were quite a number of situations of tension between the market traders and the illegal "street vendors" in front of their pitches. Local police were only able to provide two two agents, so it was necessary for reinforcements to be provided by the Civil Guard. It was only on their intervention that the situation was calmed and the area cleared. The Torrevieja crackdown has also seen the "illegal street vendors" move into areas that are relatively new to them such as the beaches in Los Locos and La Mata, where they now appear to be present through the entire day and late into the night. It would now seem that the towns and districts of Guardamar del Segura, the Orihuela Costa, particularly Cabo Roig strip, Pilar de la Horadada and even Lo Pagan and San Javier are also seeing increases in the numbers of illegal vendors and whilst the majority of these ‘lookie lookie’ men would appear to be of sub-Saharan origin these particular areas also suffer from a relatively large number of Chinese hawkers who seem to specialize in the sale of copied CD’s and DVD’s. In Cabo Roig last Friday evening, a parade of bars and restaurants about a kilometre long, the only police presence was from two local agents who appeared to have no interest in making arrests or confiscating the mountain of illegal products from upwards of twenty vendors, their mission appeared only to be one of moving them on.

YOUR MESSAGES CAN WAIT Addressing the popular ‘whatsapp’ or any other application on a mobile device while walking in public is an obvious danger for pedestrians. This is the message that the San Javier City Council is keen to impart on its residents with a series of posters have been placed throughout the municipality. Jose Miguel Luengo, the councilor of Public services, is promoting the initiative that he hopes will have a great impact on the public. He explains that the aim is "to warn pedestrians of the dangers they face while reading or writing messages on a mobile device without paying necessary attention to the environment and to the traffic.” "This is a relatively new problem, so at this stage we simply intend to raise awareness to members of the public and make it more evident among the population with these posters," he said. He further clarified that the posters are not an enforcement action, nor are they punishable. Luengo, a civil engineering graduate, said that although Spain has still to carry out any kind of study into the problem, the United States has shown that 7 percent of all road acci-

dents are caused through misuse of mobile phones or by trips and falls that occur whilst they are in use. Experts say the danger to a pedestrian who is distracted by a phone, either reading messages, listening to music or just talking, is four times greater. According to a study

in the American city of Seattle, 23 percent of all pedestrians use mobile devices while on the move, a figure that is easily extrapolated to any city in Spain.

TOURISM EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS

Despite fears caused by the financial crisis affecting most families, tourism figures for the first half of August have exceeded all expectations and now look likely to beat last year's recent record for foreign tourist arrivals. In particular, the British, Germans and French have enjoyed the Spanish sun once again, with the majority taking holidays in the Canary and Balearic Islands, as well as

Catalonia. Part of the reason is thought to be a return to closer shores, spurned by conflicts in countries like Egypt, which has seen a huge drop in tourism as a result of the problems there. Although international tourism has increased, it is not the same for the domestic market, despite how the busy roads might seem, largely blamed on low employment rates and Spanish families still living through the financially trying times. Ramón Estalella, secretary gener-

al of the Spanish Confederación Española de Hoteles, or CEHAT for short, said in a statement that, “The expectations are being met and in general, and hotels are full”, then explaining how August the 15th is a key date when hotels aim for full occupancy. “The first half of July, remember, was quite week, but in the middle of last month reservations became encouraging”, he continued, “Balearic and Canary Islands are having a particularly good season. Entrepreneurs and experts agree that it is more than likely this year that tourism will exceed the 15.5 million foreign tourists in July and August 2012. And at the end of the year, it is expected that figures will show a record of 59 million visitors, more than 2007, the best year on record so far.

STILL WAITING FOR ACCIDENT COMPENSATION

Tuesday marks the anniversary of the Spanair Flight 5022, a scheduled passenger flight from Madrid-Barajas Airport to Gran Canaria, which crashed just after takeoff from runway 36L of Barajas Airport at 14:24 CEST, on the 20th of August, 2008. Still, five years after the tragedy that took the lives of 154 people, although 18 miraculously survived, relatives of those involved have still not yet received any financial compensation for their losses. Now, an association set up to defend the rights of those involved, are preparing civil proceedings against the insurance company, Mapfre, who insured the now none operational airline, in order for the families facing awards lower than had they have been involved in a car accident on the road. Mapfre has already announced an offer of 12.7 million euro, which works out at an average of 74,000 euro per passenger. Faced with this offer, the victims claim that Mapfre should be held liable for the incident, and be required to pay compensation, rights established in international law, and should be to cover one hundred percent of the damage claims. Complications in the case have arisen since criminal charges against two mechanics were dropped by the

courts in Madrid, transferring the responsibility of liability to the aircraft manufacturer, Boeing, the aircraft being a McDonnell Douglas MD-82, registration EC-HFP. On the 2nd of August, the Government approved a plausible decree regulating the care that victims of air accidents and their families should receive, also announcing a similar provision for the victims of railway accidents. This legislation is not thought to go far enough though, as many believe it may be necessary to legislate also for compensation, since the amount of a financial award should also serve as a deterrent. Making those who may be forced to face the consequences of compensation following an accident invest in safety first, rather than paying out. Otherwise, with no threat of financial deterrent, it could be the theoretical case that airlines earn more money by avoiding such investments, although their inhibition could lead to accidents. Either way, it is clear that accountability is one thing that must be assigned correctly, but that is little in terms of peace of mind to those having suffered a fight following their tragic loss five years ago, no doubt highlighted by more recent disasters where others now may face a similar wait.

NEW PLANES FOR VUELING The company International Airlines Group, or IAG, has ordered 62 new short-haul Airbus 320 aircraft, for use by their subsidiary company, Vueling, which will allow the airline to replace some of its current fleet of A320´s and expand their business. Technical aircraft fans might be interested to know that the order comprises of 30 aircraft of the A320ceo type, and 32 of them are A320neo´s, all to be delivered between 2015 and 2020, with a reservation order for another possible 58 additional options.

In addition, IAG has secured another 100 options for the A320neo aircraft, that could be used by any of the airlines in the group, British Airways, Iberia or Vueling, which would replace the current fleet. IAG Chief Executive, Willie Walsh, has argued that the order, which is subject to approval by the shareholders of IAG, demonstrates the benefits that the merger provides to all group airlines. Walsh has argued that the new aircraft will allow Vueling to continue the expansion of its business, profitably focus on growth markets, and replace part of its aging fleet with modern, more fuel-efficient aircraft.

THINGS TO DO THIS AUGUST WEEK Having seen the busy weekend just gone, the busiest in the summer holiday calendar in fact, a number of domestic tourists have started to return home, marking the official climb down of summer, and a slowdown of events. That said, there is still plenty to keep those of us still here entertained, so here is our pick of the best in culture for the week ahead. The theatrical tours of Orihuela are still continuing, which you may have read about a few weeks ago in The Leader, and becoming increasingly popular. This type of tour, with an actor playing the role of a character from history, guiding you round the sights of the city, are starting to spread even further, with many historic landmarks offering similar excursions, but Orihuela is a must, at least for a start, as it is so steeped in history. On the Orihuela Costa, we still have Zumba Classes taking place on various beaches, which are going to be missed by the many attending, once they come to a close, but there is still plenty of time to take part, if you haven´t tried it yet. The Zenia Boulevard shopping centre has a packed line-up too, with everything from music and dance to magic and trip back in

time, to the Superfunky 70´s on Thursday. Also on a Thursday, if you are in Torrevieja, you could pop into the ever popular Tracy´s Bar and Grill, just off the CV905 near El Limonar, where you can join in with their Rock and Roll Bingo on a Thursday from 2, played just like a normal bingo game, but with music replacing the numbers. Fun, excitement and plenty of laughs are always the result, as it´s not as easy as you might think, but the constantly changing prizes are well worth the effort. Torrevieja also has another musical event this week, the XI Festival Internacional de Bandas de Música, Ciudad de Torrevieja, which will see a variety of “big bands” parade through the evening streets, before performing concerts in the municipal theatre. Torrevieja still has a great range of activities for the kids, from craft workshops to music, they will still be entertained, as well as a puppet show, but this is specifically for the over 12 years of age, with no upper limit to the pleasure. Santa Pola has a rather unusual sporting fixture at the weekend, with their Run to the Sun, a dawn race through the streets of the town, starting at 07:30 in the morning, finishing once the 6 kilometres are complete. Santa Pola is also playing host to a book fair all week, which will no doubt become a fixture for the history books itself in the future, as books are becoming replaced by their digital counterparts. This week, for our weekly recommended trip out, we are going to head south. Not too far from Cartagena is the Murcian town of Bolnuevo. Situated off the Mazarrón coast, with not many more than 1,000 residents, the town itself doesn´t have too much to offer in terms of places to visit, but the remnants of its fishing past can still be seen dotted amongst the more modern architecture, the town does have one unique element that fills visitors with awe and inspiration, and is now the feature of many a holiday photo album. At the foot of the Sierra de las Moreras, which itself is the protected home to mulberry trees, and the home of a number of duck species, some of which are in sever danger of extinction, the lower hillside at Bolnuevo has become eroded and now takes the nickname of Las Gredas, or La Ciudad Encantada, which we would translate to “Enchanted City”, a description that is both fitting and almost inadequate, when the mushroom shaped rock formations tower above the

many visitors who visit on a regular basis. In fact, come November, the area takes on a different form of enchantment, with a pilgrimage that has taken place since the sixteenth century, when, on the 17th of November, in the year 1585, the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception, saved the people from a raid by Barbary Pirates from North Africa, the alleged evidence of which can still be seen, in the form of a recently restored standard left behind by those fleeing the land of the Spanish empire. Once the stunning views of the rocks have been absorbed, there are a number of small bars and restaurants in which to partake in a light refreshment or two, or maybe just enjoy the local beaches. Mazarrón itself, to the north of Bolnuevo, or Puerto de Mazarrón to the east, both have a number of shopping centres if you fancy a bit of retail therapy, whereas to the west, there are numerous nudist beaches available, all clearly signposted, should you wish to free yourself from the shackles of clothing and retail and simply enjoy a natural afternoon in the sun.

TORREVIEJA NEWS ROUNDUP As the last summer tourists came destined for the coast prior to Thursday´s holiday, Torrevieja became the scene of complete gridlock the night before, with police and traffic managers helpless in trying to ease the flow caused by the volume of traffic traveling on the overstretched arterial road network. The three main routes into the city of Torrevieja, the N332 on the coast and the CV905 and CV95 from inland areas, all ground to a halt on Wednesday evening, as the usual concentrations of traffic were exaggerated by the increase in those on local trips such as visiting areas like the Zenia Boulevard.

The opposition PSOE in Torrevieja, with the support of the Los Verdes, along with countless complaints from residents, has denounced the state of the streets on the municipality, and the lack of cleaning and rubbish collection, which they say seems to get worse as you move away from the centre of the city. Dora Fernández from the PSOE said that the company carrying out the work “is clearly overwhelmed and unable to fulfill their contract, not just during the summer, but throughout the year”, and blames the government team for allowing this to continue, “When what we should do is demand that the city clean without excuses”. Overflowing dustbins, plagues of rats, smell and piles of rubbish left next to bins are all commonplace on the streets of the municipality, which makes Torrevieja “so dirty that some days it is closer to being a landfill than a paradise by the sea”.

The Young Socialists of Torrevieja have arranged a direct action campaign to tackle beach cleanliness in Torrevieja, by organizing a number of visits to the beach whereas their members go about reminding tourists, visitors and residents alike of the importance of keeping the beaches clean. In particular, they want to raise awareness of the environmental damage that cigarette butts, chewing gum and other materials can cause to the natural environment, by pointing out that “the story of Torrevieja is closely tied to its natural heritage and it is everyone's job to protect and conserve it”. Some 30 of Torrevieja´s 160 Local Police officers are enjoying the summer off work, at a time when the city is at its busiest, all thanks to the working time agreements implemented a few months ago by the previous councillor in charge of their management. Although the situation seemed to have more resolution after councillor Agustina Esteve took over the role, they still lack complete agreement over working hours, according to one union representing the officers.

THREE TEN STORY BLOCKS FOR ROCÍO DEL MAR Torrevieja City Council has authorized the construction of three towers blocks, each of ten stories high, in a beachfront location on urbansiation Rocio del Mar. The plans were made public last week by Los Verdes. The news came as a surprise to hundreds of local owners, many of whom say that they had been given assurances by the original builder, Gomendio, that any further apartments constructed on the site would be no more than 4 stories high. They were told that the agreement was even included in the General Plan. The current developer is understood to be TM who have announced that building work will start shortly, however they were not available for comment when contacted by the local Spanish press.

LACK OF PLANNING ON THE ORIHU ELA COSTA Anyone who looks at the street map of Orihuela Costa can’t help but notice how unplanned, disjointed and haphazard the growth of this area has been. It is a fact that this area has grown without any coordination, without any overall consideration about the transportation requirements of the population and without any regard for the overall needs of a population of 33,227 residents and several times that many annual visitors. People who have visited one of the many designated New Towns found in the United Kingdom have seen the glaring differences between the planned rapid urban growth of these locations and the disorganised expansion of Orihuela Costa. All New Towns had excellent planned road systems, with good access roads to different districts / urbanisations, excellent roads leading to the town centre, designated bus lanes plus great links to the neighbouring towns and cities. The roads system was planned before the various housing estates were built. This seems to be totally the opposite of Orihuela Costa where huge urbanisations were built that required access onto former village or country lanes. No one in the planning office appears to have questioned the effects of thousands of inhabitants poring onto

narrow, inappropriate roads. Nobody seems to have had the common sense to stop the headlong rush into construction and looked at the insertion of ring roads, dual carriageways or throughways. Further New Towns had excellent, well signposted and direct systems of footpaths and cycle ways linking all parts of the town and its various estates and amenities. Again these were planned before the builders started construction of the thousands of houses. Unlike Orihuela Costa where many services are constantly being promised but there is still no system of completed walkways or cycle routes. How hard would it have been to insert traffic free footpaths and cycle routes over what had effectively been open fields? Orihuela Costa is divided and segmented by two major roads and the canal. In recent years the N332 has been widened to cope a little better with the enormous increase in traffic created by the vast urbanisations and the huge influx of holiday makers. However this road widening resulted in many homeowners who live to the west of the N332 having no pedestrian access to the coast or the beaches. Surely any town planner should have understood the effects of the widening and the erection of the central barriers and should

have advocated for sufficient crossing bridges or underpasses to meet the needs of residents. The AP7 snakes its way through Orihuela Costa creating a barrier and further dividing the area. There are few vehicle crossing points and even less footpaths over this motorway. The promised footpath from Los Dolces to Zenia Boulevard still has to be commenced. How many pedestrians struggle over the road bridge on the hard shoulder near the AP7 tollbooth laden down with shopping whilst traffic whizzes past. Why have the needs and safety of pedestrians been so totally ignored?

Surely if there were sufficient councillors from Orihuela Costa more effective planning decisions would be made. Sandpiper The population of Orihuela Costa need to ensure their voice is heard and the only way to achieve this is to ensure that residents are on the electoral register and make sure they vote in local elections.

ORIHUELA NEWS ROUNDUP

The councillor for health in Orihuela, Luis Galiano, has reported that the Department of Health in Torrevieja has halved the time that medical care will be afforded in the clinic at Torremendo. The councillor says that the area has 2,000 registered residents, of which 1,100 have health cards, and reported that in June the intention was for a temporary reduction due to the summer months, “but we now know that the situation is final”, he explained. From now on, patients will be dealt with from 8:30 until 11:30, rather than closing at 3pm, as previous, which the councillor has blamed on the department in Torrevieja, looking to “save money from whatever”. A campaign against the reduction has already gained 723 signatures, with the Orihuela town hall stating that they would “support you, whatever it takes”. The Orihuela council approved a grant of 50,000 euro this week, all to go towards helping purchasing school supplies for students in the second cycle of primary education during the next year. In addition, the mayor, Monserrate Guillén, also said that a sum of 22,800 euro has been allocated towards health related community based projects, including awards towards projects for cancer, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, home care and more.

The department of beaches and international residents, responsible for matters relating to the Orihuela Costa, has completed the purchase of 65 additional waste containers to be placed in strategic locations across the area. There will be an extra 50 of the containers which have a single opening at the top, the typical green coloured bins used for community waste, as well as 15 of the larger sized bins, which typically have a foot press to open the doors at the top. The majority have already been sited on the streets of Campoamor, Aguamarina, Mil Palmeras and Cabo Roig, with the rest following as soon as they are delivered. In total, the purchase price of these containers is 20,276 euro.

The dramatized tours organized by the Department of Culture in Orihuela city have far surpassed the number of anticipated visitors, with one date alone, the 8th of August, seeing 38 adults and 16 children, some from as far away as Barcelona and Madrid, as well as more local visitors, being taken around by a costumed guide. As a result of the popularity, the department has had to increase the maximum number of people per route 50, in order to meet the demands. Reservations must be made in advance, through the tourism department, who are already looking at expanding the service even further.

Orihuela Town Hall has signed a collaboration agreement with the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Alicante, the MARQ, with the town hall purchasing 2,200 tickets, worth 3,300 euro, to be used by school children of the municipality to visit the institution and an exhibition related to the archaeology of the capital of the region, along with local heritage pieces.

The Spanish National American Football team have been training in Orihuela this week, with 45 members of the team and technicians, as well as their family members, having stayed at the Palacio de Tudemir hotel, whilst training at the Los Arcos sports centre in the city in preparation for the European championships to be held in Milan.

“ALL WASHED UP” Local police from Orihuela were called to assist in an unusual occurrence on Thursday, when a sail boat ran aground on the beach at Punta Prima. The incident occurred at around 2pm, when the 112 emergency coordination centre received a call reporting the incident. The police requested the use of flares by the boat, in order for them to locate the vessel, whilst rescuers on jet skis also attended, as well as a patrol from the maritime rescue service. The boat was refloated and taken just a few kilometres sough to the Cabo Roig Marina.

Alarming ‘flash for cash’ system on the rise BY NICK IRELAND FLASH FOR cash is on the rise in the UK and now spreading throughout Europe. For years we have had criminals bumping into our cars, waving you down on the motorway to convince you to stop for a flat tire and then sneaking into your car to steel your valuables. This latest tactic is either as an insurance scam or to get you to pass over cash at the scene of the collision. Motorists are being warned about a dangerous new tactic being employed by criminals running ‘crash for cash’ fraud rings. The idea is very easy. They flash their headlights to entice innocent drivers into the path of a deliberate collision at junctions or whilst exiting petrol stations. This new tactic has emerged as a worrying trend since the turn of the year. As Police, insurers and authorities clamp down on the traditional modus operandi of roundabout rear-end accidents, automotive antifraud investigation specialist, APU, has identified the new, more com-

plex, method. Dubbed ‘flash for crash’ by APU’s unique team of former-Police officers and forensic data investigators, the new tactic makes it harder for an innocent party to prove fault in the event of a legal dispute. Some 380 false insurance claims are made daily in the UK alone, costing the motor industry £1.7m a year and pushing up insurance premiums. “It is yet another example of how criminal gangs are becoming more sophisticated and attempting to stay one step ahead of suspicion,” says Neil Thomas, APU’s Director of Investigative Services and former Detective Inspector of West Midlands Police. “The adoption of flashing headlights and beckoning the driver results in a ‘your word against mine’ situation when it comes to apportioning blame. By appearing to offer the right of way, the criminal simply continues his journey into a collision, holding the victim at fault for turning across him which, of course, cannot be denied under law.” In the more traditional rear-end shunt, criminals deliberately cause accidents by braking sharply in front of victims for no reason. They often also remove brake lights in order to reduce the victim’s reaction time. The latest tactic sees cars lying in wait for victims to exit from shops, car parks or fuel stations. The fraudster flashes their headlights, offering the victim a right of way to join a main road, but then speeds up to ensure their car is hit side-on. The Insurance Fraud Bureau is currently investigating 49 rings,

responsible for around £66m in false claims. In the five years since its inception, APU has been instrumental in the successful conclusion of some of the biggest motor fraud cases ever prosecuted in the UK, including the sentencing of fraudster Masi Naqshbandi, who was jailed for seven years and three months for staging 260 fake accidents over a 15-month period, netting around £6.5 million in false insurance claims. Thomas said that, while motorists should be vigilant for any suspicious activity on the road, they should, at all times, maintain their concentration on the basic rules of safe driving. APU is uniquely staffed by former Police officers and forensic data analysts who marry innovative technology and real-world police processes to identify fraudulent activity, protect insurer liability and help reduce insurance premiums. APU is part of the Automotive & Insurance Solutions Group plc.

DON’T FORGET YOUR SUNGLASSES HOT sunshine, sandy beaches and a sparkling sea are all recipes for a great summer, but can cause problems for your eyes. The experts from Specsavers Opticas have released the following advice for keeping your eyes in top condition this summer.

www.yourlocalnewspaper.info

17

LOOK YOUR VERY BEST THIS SUMMER WITH MEDAESTHETICS

1. Protect your eyes from the sun Phil Morgan, Store Director of Specsavers Benidorm, says: ‘Excessive exposure to UV rays causes a painful irritation to the cornea at the front of the eye. In extreme circumstances this can lead to cancer of the cornea, age related macular degeneration, cataracts and even blindness.’ Everyone should wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from the sun. Check sunglasses comply with UNE-EN 1836:2006 + A1:2008 or bear the CE kite mark and are marked UV 400. If you already have sunglasses and aren’t sure if they offer the right protection, take them into your local Specsavers to be UV tested. Look for styles which are large, or wraparound to minimise light entering the eyes from the side. 2. Be careful of sand and small objects getting into your eye It is easy for sand or small objects to get into your eye when you’re enjoying swimming and spending time on the beach. If this happens take the following steps: Try not to rub your eyes as this could scratch the cornea Do not rinse your eyes with running water, the eye will water to flush out the object naturally If it is still painful and you think the object is still in your eye, go to your nearest opticians who will try to locate and remove the object If this does not help you, the Optometrist will refer you to the specialist in the nearest hospital, who will take out the object and prescribe you an ointment to heal any damage caused 3. Don’t wait until you return home to seek advice It is not advisable to wait until you go home to consult the experts. Even something like an eye infection can become serious if it is not suitably treated, so don’t be afraid to go into an optician and ask for help, many speak English. John Fisher from the UK was on holiday in Denia in October 2012 when one windy day he felt like something was blown into his eye. Suffering a large amount of discomfort he washed his eye with running water to try to rinse out the object, to no avail. Over the next few hours his vision started to deteriorate, so he decided to ask advice from Specsavers in Benidorm. The Specsavers’ team quickly saw that there was something seriously wrong and identified that Mr. Fisher had a very aggressive infection. They believed it was caused from something that scratched his eye causing a cut, which later became infected through contact with water. They referred him to the local hospital and stressed that he must seek help or risk permanent vision loss. Their concern and well explained advice made him overcome his nerves and go to the hospital and as a result he got almost 90% of his vision back. 4. Travel with contact lenses and glasses Using glasses as well as contact lenses are advised whilst on holiday, so don’t leave them at home. Swimming in contact lenses is not recommended, and plane travel and bright sunlight can make eyes dry and uncomfortable for contact lens wearers. Make sure you have enough lenses and cleaning solution for the duration of your trip and take eye drops if you suffer from dry eyes. Specsavers Opticas currently has five stores on the Costa Blanca; Calpe, Javea, Benidorm, Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja, which are offering free eye tests and great 2for1 deals including sunglasses. To find your nearest store and book a test visit www.specsavers.es

“THE KNOWLEDGE” IT’S NEVER TOO LATE! The Leader’s very own football reporter John McGregor had great cause for celebration recently when he passed his final exam in English Literature at the Open University and thus earned his English degree after five years hard study. John said ‘At the age of sixteen I unexpectedly failed ‘O’ level English Literature, which meant I couldn’t go on take ‘A’ levels and subsequently went off to join the RAF, whereas all my three siblings went on successfully to college. I have no complaints whatsoever about my life and how it’s turned out and after taking an early retirement to Spain some years ago I began to write and study to keep my brain active. In 2007 I started an Arts course at the OU which covered a great deal: history, art, music, literature and more, and I became hooked. I eventually decided to go for my degree, so I am now John McGregor B.A. To anyone considering such a move I would say ‘Do it’: the whole exercise has brought me great satisfaction and interest, as well as a sense of achievement.’ John’s second book ‘A Flock of Female Friends’ is coming out shortly, The Leader will have all the details.

POOLSIDE ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE RBL BY TAABS Colin with Keith Carter

The Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion met at the Olimpia Restaurant, Mil Palmeras last Thursday evening to say farewell to one of its founder members, Colin Middleton, who is now spending rather more of his retirement in UK. As such, Colin, who has been a committee member since the branch was originally established back in 2008, having served as Vice Chairman, Welfare Chairman, Treasurer and Merchandising Secretary, has finally transferred his membership back to England. However, as he will still be holidaying on the Costa Blanca, Colin will no doubt retain his close links with the Orihuela Costa for which he has been such an important part. The photograph shows Chairman, Keith Carter, presenting a small gift to Colin on behalf of the Branch Membership. After the business part of the meeting was completed the members retired poolside where they were entertained by TAABS, the

Torrevieja Association of Amateur Balladeers Singers, with Cathy Carson. The group are always well received at the Olimpia and as they sang many old favourites the audience was increased by a large number of holidaymakers who were eating or drinking at the venue. As the show was brought to its conclusion a surprise presentation was made to the RBL, a small Teddy Bear, which was recently handed in a local charity shop operated on behalf of the Butterfly Children. The bear was unusual in that it bore the RBL badge and logo on it’s chest so the gift was felt to be most appropriate. TAABS have been performing and raising money for a variety of charities in the area for over a decade. Their performances are usually given absolutely free and if you would like either to join them or to take advantage of their excellent services to help raise funds at your charity, club or institution, you should contact them through Cathy by email at cathy-carson@hotmail.com TAABS have raised many thousands of euros for local charities

Vera returns on Sunday the 25th of August

Adam Hills is back with a new series of 15 to 1

Yorkshire seems to be getting a little more of the action at the moment, following on from the reality show focussing on buses, this week we see Channel 4 launch Educating Yorkshire. Filmed at Thornhill Community Academy near Dewsbury, this brand new eight-part series captures every detail of life in the school from playground hijinks and inspirational lessons to life-changing programmes, viewers will be treated to a host of comedy sketches featuring some interesting celebrities. Kicking things off is the return of Fifteen to One, back on screens after ten years. With Adam Hills at the helm, we’ll see fifteen celebrities go head to head as they battle it out to win the notoriously tough quiz show. There’ll then be an 80s makeover of Cats Does Countdown and Alan Carr will welcome some 80’s sparkle into the studio in a special Chatty Man. The programming will end with a documentary throwback to 80s music show Rewind: The Tube, which will look at the programme’s rise and fall, the social context that it existed in and also feature a host of stars looking back at their contributions. Royal fans will be keen to know that the Duke of Cambridge has given his first interview since the birth of Prince George, to be screened on ITV next month in the documentary ‘Prince William’s Passion: New Father, New Hope’, or at least that´s the title at the moment. In the interview with Jane Treays, Prince William shares his joy at becoming a father, talks about his hopes for his new family and his passion for wildlife conservation as well as his love of Africa. Drama fans need to prepare to switch to ITV 1, as Vera returns on Sunday the 25th of August, as

D.C.I. Vera Stanhope investigates the brutal murder of young physiotherapist, Lizzie Faulkner (Eva Quinn), gunned down at a luxury country retreat. For D.S Joe Ashworth, the case brings him face to face with a part of his past he would rather forget. The four part series promises a roller coaster of drama and emotion, inspired by the bestselling novels and characters created by acclaimed crime writer Ann Cleeves, Oscar nominated and awardwinning actress Brenda Blethyn reprises her lead role as Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope alongside actor and filmmaker David Leon who plays Vera’s trusty sidekick and surrogate son Detective Sergeant Joe Ashworth. BBC Children’s TV has launched the Mobile Ap CBeebies Playtime

Over on the BBC, Joe Godwin, Director, BBC Children’s TV said, “Technology is firmly embedded in children’s lives and has opened up opportunities to inform, educate and entertain them in new ways”, explaining why the channel aimed at the youngest audience members has launched CBeebies Playtime, a mobile app for Android, iOS and Kindle Fire devices in the UK. Finally, Channel 5 is getting bigger, with the announcement of Supersize Season, with 6 brand new documentaries exploring a range of weight related subjects. From Britain’s Biggest Man, 41 year old Keith Martin, bed bound for the past decade and weighing almost 70 stone, Keith is eating himself to death. He desperately needs help, as well as an in-depth look at the controversial and astonishing world of ‘gainers’, a group of obese women who are determined to be as big as possible, amongst other subjects. IN THE BUNKER WITH MICK THE GRIP COLORADO GOLF CLUB, USA, where the European ladies will be hoping to retain the Solheim Cup this weekend. By the time you read this it will be death or glory. I WAS GOING to show the picture of 77 year old Gary Player in the altogether which recently graced the front page of the ESPN fitness magazine, but I thought you might be having your breakfasts. Even so, he can still do 1000 situps a day, lift weights and then enjoy a round of golf so who am I to knock him. TOM WATSON took time off from the British Open to visit Gleneagles, site of the 2014 Ryder Cup. He laughingly recounted his efforts at espionage. Tim Finchem and Keith Waters of the European Tour denied an impending PGA Tour takeover. (They would, wouldn’t they.) Last year five European Tour events were cancelled and Waters was expressing concern over lower ranked players earning their tour cards for 2013. We will doubtless hear more on the subject. JUST WHEN we thought drivers couldn’t get any more adjustable, along comes the Taylor Made SLDR, (Slider) which features an adjustable, sliding weight system which launches the ball higher and longer. The key to the leap in distance is a lower and more forward centre of gravity, which they say promotes lower spin and faster ball

speed. Using TaylorMade’s movable weight technology, SLDR features a blue, 20-gram weight that slides on a 21 point track located on the front of the sole. This shifts the clubhead’s CG horizontally towards either the heel, to promote a draw, or the toe, to promote a fade, promoting a shot dispersion range of up to 30 yards. In addition, the Loft Sleeve Technology allows easy adjustment of the loft, with 12 positions of loft change. JUSTIN ROSE, the first Englishman to win a major in 17 years and the first to win the U.S. Open in 43 years has gone from 25th place to 1st in the Race to Dubai rankings. The 32 year old was last year’s runner up at Jumeirah and set a new Earth Course record of 62. Justin learned the game with his father at his home course, Hartley Wintney, Hampshire. “I had a good grounding in golf etiquette there, and all the do’s and don’ts,” he remembers, “the secretary used to give me a rollicking for having my hat on in the club house, stuff like that,.” Quite right too, Standards boy, Standards! A GOOD PRACTICE DRILL Graeme McDowell uses in sand is to draw a square around the ball about four inches wide. The object is to remove the sand from that box and splash it on the green. The key to controlling the distance the ball goes is to control the amount of sand you take, this drill does that perfectly. It also helps to contact the sand in the same place, and is easy to set up. BRANDT SNEDEKER won the Canadian Open last month after Hunter Mahan, who was leading by two strokes, left to be with his wife as she gave birth to a daughter, Zoe Olivia, in a Texas hospital. Snedeker, who won by three strokes, said: "Baby Zoe will be getting a nice gift from me, if not for her I probably wouldn’t have won.”

We started another hot week off on Monday with a 6x6x6 which was won with a score of 88 pts by the team of Nick & Donna Campbell, Phil Herrington & the very useful "Albert" On Wednesday we played a Singles Stableford. There was a salutory lesson to us all when one of our members was disqualified for having a wrong gross score on the card. The points total was in fact correct which is why the error was not spotted before the card was signed but unfortunately the rules of golf are clear that the gross score on the card must be correct or disqualification follows. The results for the day were: Cat1. 1. Tom Hardie 37 pts (c/b), 2. Phil Herrington 37 pts, 3. Brian Townend 36 pts. Cat2. 1. Mike Chapman 38 pts, 2. Allen McClusky 36 pts (c/b), 3. Roger Tunstall 36 pts. 2s Club. Brian Townend, Mike Chapman, Rod Doel, John Collins & Pete Dunn. On Friday we played a Two Ball Texas Scramble which was won by Pete Dunn & Ron Phipps with a score of 63.5. Runners up with 65.75 were Phil Herrington & Brian Humphreyson. Finally all in the Society were saddened to hear of the sudden death recently of one of our ex members Barry Shearman who was very well known in golfing circles in the Costa Blanca area. Our condolences to all of his family. Doug Wright.

UPDATE ON LA TERCIA A few weeks ago I reported upon the concerns regarding the closure of the 9 hole course at La Tercia where there the aqua driving range and the majority of the clubhouse had been closed and the course was generally in a poor state of maintenance. There has been no official announcement issued by the course management but I have been informed by a concerned resident on the complex that the course will officially close within days and will keep you informed of any changes as they happen. On a ‘lighter’ note a new book has been published for the avid golfer with information on the following elements of playing golf: How to properly line up your fourth putt. How to hit a Maxfli ball from the rough when you just hit a Titleist from the tee. How to get more distance off the shank. When to give the Captain the finger. Proper excuses for drinking beer before 9:00 a.m. How to find that ball that everyone else saw go in the water. How to relax when you are hitting five off the tee. SAN MIGUEL GOLF SOCIETY VISIT ALENDA

As most of us well know, during what is always the hottest month of the year many residents from the slightly inland areas of Murcia, Crevillente, Elche etc migrate to the coast where the sea breeze does help a little. So, what does San Miguel Golf Society decide to do? – a nice warm day’s golf near Elche at Alenda! Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great course and always in fine condition…..but it was as hot as hell ! Teeing off immediately behind another society of “mad Brits” and being the last four-ball

in our group meant it wasn’t going to be the fastest game on record. It wasn’t long before I found myself trying to play from one shady spot up to the next mature tree which wasn’t always the best approach from a scoring point of view. Unfortunately when the fairway was lined with a number of trees, I often ran out of shots before reaching the green!! Thankfully Alenda is quite well off for shady spots and whereas my day’s course management helped me collect the “Abacus” award,

it also helped keep me alive to tell the tale! Having guzzled over 2 litres of non-alcoholic water during the round, the bar in the clubhouse was a positive, and very welcome, oasis. But, it does seem I was in the minority as some great scores were recorded including a particularly obscene one which cracked the 40 barrier! NTP’s went to Captain Steve Davis (hole 3), John Osborne (hole 5), Theo Boelhouwer (hole 13) and Norman Padmore (hole 16). Tim Goldsmith (34) and Paul Trig (33) took the top two visitors’ prizes. Silver division’s top two prize-winners were Mick Roscoe who still carded 35 off his new handicap and an incredible 41 from Chris Hamblett. Gold’s top two were Alan MacDonald with 33 and John Osborne with 36…….well done to all. You can keep up to date with all society matters by visiting www.smgs.org or simply give Baz a buzz on 966 731 033 to get all the details of future weekly meetings – visitors are always made very welcome.

LIME BAR GOLF SOCIETY, LOS ALTOS The golf societies venue for the 14th August 2013 was held at the Mar Menor Golf Course. About twenty-six players took place in very hot sunshine, the course was in good condition considering the continuous dry weather. The competition was the ‘The Lime Bar Open’ played in Stroke Play format and the scores recorded are as follows. Nearest the Pin on the 2nd Hole (par 3) was Tony Jones. Nearest the Pin on the 11th hole (par 4) in two shots was Dave Latham. Nearest the pin on the 17th hole (par 3) was Dave Cahill. Best guest was Derek Mountfield with a score of 75 net playing under a 7 handicap. 4th place with a score of 72 net was Mick Slater. 3rd place with a score of 71 net was Paul Abbott. 2nd place with a score of 70 net was Dave Latham 1st place with a score of 67 net was Dave Cahill A very good day in pleasant company, thank you to Captain Mick

LEADER

FAIRWAYZ GOLF SOCIETY. By Steve Lawrence. Today we played at Altorreal near Murcia. We played a team yellow ball game and an individual Stableford game which was very enjoyable. The yellow ball game was where each team member took in turns to play a hole with the yellow ball, which if the player managed to score on that hole without losing the yellow ball, doubled that score. Each team recorded the best 2 scores on each hole, alongside the individual scores of each player, it sounds a bit confusing but certainly made you concentrate. Once the yellow ball was lost, the double score bonus ceased. Several yellow balls were lost in the event, to which no cost was afforded to the guilty team member. I have to put my hand up and say, that I was that man who lost the ball in our team, and the only way I could have retrieved it would have been with a Scuba set! Another incident during play which I feel compelled to mention, is that a certain member, no names mentioned, but his initials are PB? and he has grey hair and a moustache, bowed legs, and used to work for the constabulary, had a very senior moment! While waiting on one of the tees for his turn to tee off, he stood his driver up against a rubbish bin and stood aside. After his 3 colleagues had teed off, he promptly picked up his driver and put it back into his golf bag and merrily drove off up the fairway in the buggy. Halfway up the fairway he asked his partner, "Did you see where my ball went?" then he realised that he had never hit his ball off the tee! Say no more! The results were as follows:1st - Steve Hamilton 31pts. c/b. 2nd - Dave Titchen 31pts. c/b. Best front 9 - Graham Lawrence 20pts. Best back 9 - Stuart Taylor 16pts. No winners of nearest the pin. Nearest the pin in 3 - Tony Macmillan. No 2 ball winner. Winning Yellow ball team with 101 pts:Dave Rae. John Saunders. Gerry Williams. Harry Hunter. Well done to all the teams. The game next week is at Vistabella, followed the week after at Alenda. Details are on our website diary. Please be at the courses one hour prior to 1st tee time.

Slater for organising the event and mentioning Mick’s wife Angie who helps considerably behind the scenes. Also thanks to the Staff at The Lime Bar and ladies for a most enjoyable meal. Anyone wishing Join our friendly society just need to phone Mick on 659 866 468.

HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY VILLAMARTIN Another good turnout for the Hub Golf Society, this time at the excellent La Finca course, Algorfa, to play a two man Texas Scramble. Not unsurprisingly, birdie opportunities were in abundance, however, only six materialised and that with two shots at each opportunity. Regular visitor Micky Pimm was drawn with Greg Pow, a formidable team, both big and accurate hitters from the tee, but their short game let them down. A steady round, which could have been so much better ensured second spot behind the man of the moment Graeme Jackson and partner Steve Morris. The two were out in 38 (two over) and back in for 36 (level). Both dovetailed well, essential in a Scramble, to record a gross 74 nett 69.7 and the winners prizes, by six shots. Next outing for the Hubbers is at Roda on Thursday 22nd August. All are welcome to register at the Hub, Villamartin. Results PJ´s Rent a Car N.T.P´s: Hole 3 Dave Lethaby, Hole 13 Dave Robson, Hole 16 Dave Lethaby 4th Place: John Brown & Shaun Smith

LA ZENIA GOLF SOCIETY By Lucas Secretary Another good turn oui at El Valle on Thursday with 4 guests joining us for the day. El Valle was looking in good condition, and the weather hot again but a nice cool breeze blowing in some areas of the course, which was a welcome, glad my playing partner found a buggy with the split screen. We played normal full handicap stableford with 4 n/t/p's plus the usual twos pot which had rolled over from last week. Chris Blown was in fine form winning two of the n/t/p's one which was only 3 niches from the pin, this was the par 4 n/t/p in two. Man of the match being his first game as a member was Nick Brown playing off 12, came in with 40 pt's and a two's winner. Welcome to the society Nick and your new handicap. So Winner was Nick Brown with 40 pt's, N/T/P's No 1 In 2 Chris Blown, No 6 Mike Smith, No 12 Steve Dixon, No 16 in 3 Chris Blown, Two's pot shared by 3 Chris Blown ( if he had missed this one, there would have been the few jokes going round ) Jeff Luke and Nick Brown. TMGS MATCH REPORT, LA FINCA It’s relentless, the heat of August. It’s the same every year so why on earth are we so surprised to be wilting in 34 degrees? Despite the heat, it was apparent that those that braved it thoroughly enjoyed the delights of La Finca where the fairways and greens were, as usual, of a high standard and where we even witnessed the delivery of ‘new sand’ into the bunkers. I heard only one complaint of the day and that came from “unnamed” (the pro from Campoamor) who insisted that next time he would choose whom he played with and that the ABBA rejects (commonly known as Dork and Dildo) would be far down on the list. One must not ‘mickey take’ out of the Scandinavians…they threaten us with retribution and a re-occurrence of the Vikings invading England. The results on the day were a reflection upon the hot conditions and only two members achieved or bettered their handicaps and for a change all 4 NTP’s were won and they were won by Arnie Hansson, Roger Nilsen (Dork and Dildo), Ernie Wilson and Alan Rixson. We had 4 guests and the best was Mr Peter Bull with 34 points. The Silver Division was a fairly close affair except for the winner, Robbie Rae, who was obviously (NOT) missing his partner Olga who came home with 36 points with Roger Nilsen in 2nd place with 33 points and that left Ernie Wilson and Mick Kennedy to fight out 3rd and 4th on the countback with 31 points. The Gold lads didn’t fare much better and the battle of the ‘Hunters’ was won by James who beat Kenny with James taking 3rd place with 34 points. The runner-up was John Eyre with a nice 35 points but not

La Marina Baldricks Golf Society Alenda - Captain’s Day A hot and sunny day greeted us at Alenda for Captain’s Day and unusually for Alenda, no one got lost on the way. For this event Bill went for a format new to most members: Front 9 stroke play and Back 9 Stableford, with the Stableford score being deducted from the stroke play and the lowest total being the winner. There was a really good turn out of members and guests today, though 2 late withdrawals, of which I was one, dropped us down to 22 starters. The course as is the norm at Alenda was in great condition and this led to some decent golf being played. Because of the scoring system and some confusion on how to manage it, a big picture of the golf was hard to define, so a lot of the individual scores remain a mystery. However winners did emerge from the confusion and as usual the cream came to the top. Div 1 winner was John Harle with 24 points and 2nd was John Haigh with 26 points. Div 2 winner was John Morgan 27 points, 2nd Andy Giles 29 points. It actually turned out to be a John Harle benefit day today as he

VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel Well what have we got left to report all the leagues have finished and now we are left looking forward to when they start up again in October. That is of course if we forget that our Competition Secretary Peter Wright has as usual being doing a great job in organizing a number of internal competitions not least of all the 2 wood pairs competition that reaches its climax next week when current favourites Richard Lee and Martin Foulcer take on Peter Wright and his partner Ian Kenyon. What can the rest of us say except sock it to them Peter. A number of our other internal competitions kick back into life in the first week in September not to mention our open 3 2 1 competition which is scheduled for the 31st August to 2nd September. Peter has also been busy and club members should be aware that the entry forms for all the clubs 2013 – 14 internal competitions are now up on the notice board. Congratulations go to Beryl Regan and Gail Watson who have reached the Semi Finals of the SABA Ladies Pairs Summer Knockout Competition and the rest of us are holding our breath to see who they play as their next opponents will be either Jenny Bowman and Pat Harman or Barbara Brown and Maggie Furness who both entered as Vistabella members which guarantees a Vistabella presence in the final. Maggie has also already qualified for the Ladies Singles Semis with a very tight victory over Gail Watson just to underline the strength of the Vistabella ladies. Just a reminder to anyone looking for a new club Vistabella is probably the most friendly club on the Costas and as results show we are on the up, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to get in at reduced rates just ring 966 107 846 it may be the most sensible thing you have ever done in your life.

SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB PREPARES FOR EUROS

The European Bowls Championships is fast approaching and San Miguel Bowls Club are very proud – along side Emerald Isle Bowls Club to be hosting the 2013 European Championships which are to be held in Spain for the first time. Work is under way at the club to impress the European visitors. All reas of where work is needed have been identified by the committee and now they are busy ticking things of the list. The trolleys have been updated and are now in excellent condition. The seat benches have been refurbished or replaced with new ones. The ditch liners have been replaced to fall within the modern development requirements for a holding service. The club still plan further work in August and are starting a project to improve the viewing facilities plus the general painting of the walls etc. They are also looking to add an extra scoreboard which will show the countries that are competing plus the score as the matches will be “set play.” Both clubs are working incredibly hard to be hosts for the European Championships and their pride in attaining the honour of hosts, is reflected in the sheer hard work each committee, is putting into the European Championships. The Leader will keep you posted on how each host club is getting along as the Championships draw near.

GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB By Steve Hibberd On Friday 30 August at 6pm, Greenlands Bowls club will be holding a race night. Tickets costing only 6 euros include a scrummy BBQ, and can be purchased from the bar at GBC, or by contacting John O'Brien/Helen Langlois. Please support your club, and make this event a night to remember. Jim Oliver has asked me to remind everyone that the Saturday roll up continues to thrive, despite the rise in weather temperatures. Last weeks meeting was won by Tom Hill. Runners up were Steve Hibberd, Ken Toy and Charles Langlois. The winner of the wooden spoon, as usual shall remain nameless, but I will give you a clue in that he's in the final of the forthcoming club 2 wood singles, and he's not the noisy one!! (Only joking Phil). Saturday roll up club meet at 9.30 for 10am. Come along members old and new, to enjoy a stress free Saturday morning bowling. If Saturday doesn't suit you, why not try the 'come and go league' on Tuesday and Thursday mornings?

The penultimate match in the Greenlands v Quesada friendlies(?), once again went the way of GBC. Played at Quesada, the visitors won on 5 of the 7 rinks played, with a shots difference of QBC - 97, GBC - 134. Heather Meston, Jim Oliver & Brian Miller, were the nights best winners. So, next Thursdays final match in the series (5pm start at Greenlands), leaves the home side 190 shots to the good. Heard about the bloke who rang up his local bowling club, and asked, "is that the local bowling club"? "It depends where you're calling from", came the reply. (Ok, I know it's not the best, but I've got to pad out the report with something!!).

TORRY WRAP UP FRIENDLIES IN STYLE Last week, Torry played out the final 2 of 6 pre season friendlies, saving the best till last by winning both of them. Going into the home game against preferente league side CD Cox, definite signs of improvement had been evident, as new players were being recruited on a weekly basis. A nice touch to allow free entry, probably because it clashed with England giving Scotland a lesson in how to play football, saw just over 150 loyal fans soak up the atmosphere inside Nelson Mandela Stadium, for hopefully the last time in a while. It took only 6 mins for Torry to take the lead, courtesy of an error by the visiting keeper, allowing Carrasco to make no mistake with his accurate shot. Dani came to his sides rescue with a vital goal line clearance, then his colleague Gasch missed 2 great goal scoring opportunities, as Torry finished the half one goal to the good. As with previous friendlies, the game died somewhat in the 2nd half, leaving Eric needing to brush up on his shooting skills, for he was guilty of squandering a couple of super opportunities, as Torry at last kept a clean sheet. Thader (Rojales) was the venue for Torry's final

warm up match. They took the lead on 25 mins, when a nasty foul on Pastor, resulted in Alberto confidently dispatching the spot kick. A superb double goal line clearance on the stroke of half time, involving firstly Torry keeper Carlos parrying a fierce drive, then Alexis coolly heading away, preserved the visitors narrow advantage. On the hour mark, a long range Dani blockbuster brought out an excellent save from the Thader keeper. Next it was Gasch to test the host custodian, but his 75th min drive was similarly dealt with. Thader launched an assault on goal, their fearsome effort just skimming the cross bar, as the locals refused to accept defeat. Had it not been for a fine save by sub keeper Carrion, Thader would have earned a share of the spoils, but as it was, a decent defensive display, saw Torry shut out their opponents once again. Unlike the referee against Cox, who incidentally officiated without linesmen and kept the cards in his pocket, this arbitro lacked discretion in booking 6 players (3 apiece). On Sun 25 Aug, ko 6.30 pm, Torry start a new div 3 season, when La Nucia are the visitors to Vicente Garcia Stadium.

ELCHE - RAYO OF SUNSHINE LAST NIGHT At eight pm on Monday

BY JOHN evening evening our very MCGREGOR own Elche football club made their long-awaited return to the top tier of Spanish football, La Liga, to be playing some of the world’s greatest teams like Real Madrid and Barcelona this season. The Illicitanos are actually playing Rayo Vallecano, a minor Madrid club somewhat dwarfed in size and power by their near neighbours Athletico and Real Madrid. Rayo are no mugs, they came eighth in La Liga last year, regularly punch above their weight, and will prove a stern test for Elche. In the City of Palms we will have to wait until next Saturday evening at 7pm to receive our first La Liga guests Real Sociedad at the mighty (re-furbished especially) Martinez Valero stadium in Elche, first built for the 1982 World Cup. Question: are Elche ready for such an emotional roller-coaster and true test of their footballing credentials? Well...as a supporter of the club for over ten years I would have to say no, but you can never

tell in football, can you? We clearly needed new, and classier blood to survive, which has taken some time to acquire, and Elche are still wheeling and dealing now. This week saw the confused arrival of an exciting, experienced, Columbian midfielder called Carlos ‘The Rock’ Sanchez, who played for his country midweek against the USA in Barcelona. Somehow Carlos missed his return flight, causing some local consternation, but is now hopefully installed at Elche for three years. He arrives together with another new signing this week, midfielder Javi Marquez, who joins on a year’s loan from Mallorca. Marquez was highly thought of in Spain two years ago, but struggled last year with an injury, although appears all clear now. The two newbies join an exciting new squad with several key players from last year, like goalkeeper Herrera, full backs Albacar and Suarez, midfielders Carles Gil and Fidel, and last year’s leading goalscorer Coro. Whatever happens this season, it’s going to be exciting – watch this space… Mucho Elche!

KIKO TAKES WORLD JUNIOR TITLE Two fights ago, three-time European junior featherweight champion Kiko Martinez got knocked out by Carl Frampton in the ninth round. Now, after pulling an upset in Atlantic City on Saturday night, he holds a world title. The former Daya Nueva fighter Martinez outgunned 26 year old Columbian Jonathan Romero and knocked him out in the sixth round to win the world junior featherweight title in unexpected fashion on the undercard of the Daniel Geale-Darren

Barker middleweight title fight at the Revel CasinoHotel. Romero and Martinez went right at each other in the first round. There was no getting-to-know-you at all. But Martinez, in particular, was super-aggressive and winging hard shots, which eventually caught up to Romero, who took a beating and was a bloody mess when the fight was finally stopped in the sixth round.

ABBEY ANGLING MATCH FISHING This week we fished the 9th and penultimate round of the Summer Series on the river Segura at Murcia on the 13th August. The pegs are now in urgent need of work doing on them, the reeds are closing in and some of the stands are beginning to tilt into the water also the river must have recently had extra water in as under the bridge is partly flooded. It was Bleak, Bleak and more Bleak as the river is teaming with them and the paste anglers were struggling to get their bait to the bottom of the water without it being stripped on the way down.
