THE LEADER CATCHES UP WITH MATEO Having already set itself up as one of the most popular comedy shows of current times, ITV´s Benidorm will return to our screens in January, for the sixth series, with a
seventh due to be filmed in the spring. This weekend, with our exclusive access, The Leader joined one of the shows biggest stars, Jake Canuso, who plays Spanish barman Mateo, as he was signing copies of his 2014 calendar at Morgan Tavern, otherwise known as Neptune´s in the show. Early in the day, the queues had already started to form, as young and not so young, male
and female, started to gather for a chat with their TV hero, with clicks and flashes of cameras a plenty, as the personally signed calendars were quickly snapped up. Speaking before the event, Jake explained how the people of Benidorm have, “taken us into their hearts”, continuing, “It´s so lovely that everywhere we go people want to stop us and chat, or take photographs, Continued on Page 2

ARE YOU STILL ON THE PADRON?
An ongoing campaign by the National Statistics Institute of Spain has resulted in Orihuela town hall urging residents to consider the validity of their status on the Padrón. In particular, residents who may have registered some time ago, but had no reason to request a copy of their status certificate, or who may be new to the area, or anybody in doubt, is asked to make contact with the town hall to check, so as genuine residents don´t get removed as part of the natural cleanup of the data by the National Institute. According to Martina Schreurer, the Councillor for the Coast and International Residents explained to The Leader that if you have made official contact with the office within two years, moved municipalities or bought a large purchase such as a car, it is likely that your status is already proven by the natural process. You may have been to the town hall to collect an up to date certificate, in which case you are confirmed, but if you have been dormant in official procedures, you may need to update your status. Accurate numbers of residents on the padrón are important, as those figures dictate the administrative size of a municipality and, therefore, the amount of budget allocated per person by regional and central governments. With 95,000 residents in Orihuela, and growing, the municipality is just 5,000 away from the next level of financial allocation, which would boost the available funds for services in the
municipality, but a cynic might suggest that it is no wonder that the central records office are trying to keep a close eye on hoping the figure doesn´t pass the 100,000 mark. Martina Schreurer continued to explain that “sadly, people pass away, some move back to their own country, others just have no involvement with the town hall”, that is why the INE have a duty to flush out the figures periodically, to ensure as accurate picture as possible. If you are in the position of having to check or reregister, then it is also an ideal opportunity to check your voting records. Whilst expats are not eligible to vote in national elections to choose the government of the country, we are eligible and able to vote at a local, municipal and regional level. Whatever your political leanings at home, you have the right to choose who runs your local government here, so if you think the government team are doing a good job, you are able to ensure they carry on with a mark from your pen. Equally, if you think they are not performing, you have the same right to vote against them, and possibly change the political canvas. It is your right, subject to certain conditions, so you should take the opportunity to get involved. By not waiting until the mad rush of election time, you can check the process now and then be prepared to make your mark and play your own part in the future of where you live.

TORREVIEJA NEWS ROUNDUP
The Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja are celebrating after a rundown public area in the La Torreta II urbanization was cleaned up days after they highlighted how neglected it had become since the official photo shoot declaring the park area open. However, the councillor for parks and gardens, Carmen Gómez Candel, says that the work was already planned and commenced the day before the complaint was raises, saying that the greens should come to them direct to complain, to allow them to “quickly and efficiently to the needs of the citizens”. The area was officially opened 5 years ago, since which the residents claim to have seen “little or no” maintenance.
The councillor for town planning in Torrevieja, Francisco Moreno, has ordered the demolition of an illegal structure on the outskirts of the town, following a case highlighted by the Los Verdes party, seven years after it was built, despite warnings of the illegality at the time of construction. The structure in question is a roundabout on the main “Old Alicante Road”, situated between the Lidl supermarket and Las Lagunas college. The company that built it, building firm Jost, are now bankrupt, so the 41,000 euro to take back the illegally used land and return the road to normal will be funded by the town hall. Jost had previously worked on numerous projects, both privately and on behalf of the town hall. Francisco Moreno is also the Councillor for beaches in Torrevieja, and this week announced that work has already begun on places barriers across the canal del Acequión, to prevent marine vegetation from reaching the beaches, as it grows
on the natural channel from the Salinas to the sea. Recent weeks have seen mass protests over the state of Torrevieja´s beaches on the south side, with both the city council and salt manufacturing
Marine vegetation is forming on a number of beaches company, NCAST working together now the summer season is coming to an end.
Residents of the Torreta Florida urbanization have denounced the public drainage system, as they say that whenever rainfall exceeds 10 litres per square metre, the pumping stations are unable to cope and localised flooding occurs. A similar situation happens in the Doña Ines area, where extensive works have tried to resolve the problems, none of which has yet to be successful, such as drainage channels along the CV095 road and even a water passage under the N332, some of which have eased the situation, but homes and roadways still flood in any high capacity rain fall. Torrevieja Council is not enforcing the extension to staff working hours, as approved by the governing board in June, which would lengthen their working week by 30 minutes, in order to meet the 37.5 hours mandated by central government in 2012, requiring them to complete 1,664 hours per year, to reduce the deficit and avoid further public employment contracts, and includes a pay freeze. Of the 600 staff who work for the town hall, the only documented evidence of compliance is from the Local Police, although their working hours approval has been the subject of discussion for some time.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.
TRAVEL INSURANCE ARE YOU COVERED? Listening to recent revelations in the UK about staff at one of the UK’s major banks currently dealing with claims for the mis-selling of personal protection insurance did not surprise me. Reportedly, staff were told to automatically decline claims on their first presentation, on the basis that most people fail to pursue the issue further. This reminded me of a recent problem that I had with a major bank in Spain. For many years I have had a gold credit card, issued by my Spanish bank, which I rarely use. When the time came for its renewal I considered cancelling it to avoid the hefty annual charge, and I discussed this with a member of staff at my local branch. Needless to say, I was advised to keep the card on the basis that it provided me with valuable additional services, such as travel and accidental damage insurance. As I also take out an annual travel insurance policy to cover my partner and myself during our visits to the UK and elsewhere, the bank suggested that I no longer needed this as I was duplicating the cover with that already provided by the gold card, assuming that I used it to book the tickets. To me, it made good financial sense to accept my bank’s advice to continue with the card, and to not renew the travel insurance policy. A few months later, I booked flights and hotel accommodation with my gold card for my partner and myself to visit the UK. My partner had a heart attack and was hospitalised, and we were subsequently warned not to fly because of his condition. I contacted my bank and
was told to contact the insurance company, with whom I also insure my car. I submitted a claim for about 900 euros for the refund of flights and some of the hotel accommodation that had been paid for in advance, and which I assumed were covered by the credit card insurance. I couldn't have been more wrong. My claim was declined on the grounds that it was my partner who was taken ill and not myself. This was despite the fact that we have a joint credit card on the same account. This seemed a ridiculous situation and I can image many circumstances where flights are booked for husband, wife and possibly children, yet if another member of the party was taken ill there would be no cover. I complained and raised a number of salient points in a letter written in both Spanish and English and sent it to the bank’s head office for further consideration, which again was quickly declined. On this occasion, I had the distinct feeling that because I was an expat living in Spain, I was not being treated in the same way as a Spanish citizen. Discrimination of any kind always makes me angry and so I wrote another, stronger letter in Spanish, threatening to close my bank account, credit card, as well as home and car insurance with the company. I sent this to the bank branch, customer service department, as well as to their Chief Executive at their head office as well as the insurance company. All letters were sent by signed for post, with additional copies sent by fax (which the Spanish still adore) and email, which are usually ignored. It is a process that I call the ‘scatter gun’ approach to complaints, which usually works for me. Two days later I received a phone call from the insurance company to tell me that my claim had been reconsidered and that the company had decided to make an ex gratia payment for the full amount. Although it was a victory for me, I would have preferred the payment to be made to me as a matter of right, based upon the conditions of the policy and not simply because I was able to shout loud enough to make

a point. I have learned a valuable lesson; I will no longer trust the free insurance offered with my credit card; indeed, it will be cancelled later in the year and I will be looking for a travel insurance policy with its conditions written clearly in English. I would be interested to hear from other readers who have had similar claims on their credit card insurance denied, as well as positive experiences with both credit cards and travel insurance. I will place any information about this issue on the expat section of my website, which may be of help to other readers. Meanwhile, when making a complaint against a bank or insurance company in Spain, my advice is never to take no for an answer. TRAIN EXPROPRIATION COMPENSATION DOUBLED
Following the recent announcement that a tender contract has been prepared for the creation of a draft study of the viability of a train line along the Mediterranean coast, that included a feasibility study of the railway connection of Torrevieja, a campaign championed by the Los Verdes and numerous campaigners in the city, the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, was quick to jump on board with his plans for the development. Dolón stated that three locations had been identified as potential sites where he would like an interchange to be built, where trains, buses and taxis all meet, to provide a transport hub for the coast. However, Dolón wasn´t prepared to say where these sites were, at least not for the moment. There is no doubt to the benefits that a train link to Torrevieja would bring, but there are questions over the impact it would have on the local environment. The sites in Torrevieja are unlikely to be vacant plots immediately, unless one is the originally proposed location of the fairground and market place, again recently announced as no longer being used for that purpose, despite the money spent already and even buses being diverted to cover the market that never had and never will exist. The allocation of land for the interchange could possibly mean demolition of buildings already there, which may explain part of the reason for the Mayor not wishing to aggravate property owners too soon. The line where the trains will run will undoubtedly mean that land will have to be con-
sumed by the project, whether that land be natural, agricultural or residential would remain to be seen, but the train would have to run somewhere. This is where we now have some good news, at least if you are one of those who might lose land, or if you want to gamble and try and invest now, before the train starts to roll. The Regional High court has ruled this week on a case brought by the owner of nine farms affected by the AVE high speed train between Caudete and Villena, setting the “fair price” at double that which was originally awarded. The ruling, issued by the litigation department, annuls that established in December 2011 by a judge in Alicante, which estimated compensation at around 320,000 euro for the nine plots, now stating that the fair value of the land should have been set at 715 786 euro. The court considers that the unit price of land, both irrigated and rain-fed, should be set at 12 euro per square metre, well above that established by Alicante which valued rain-fed land at 4.11 euro per square meter and 6.02 euro per square metre for irrigated plots. The increase was partly based on the argument that although the train line only cut through parts of the land, the surrounding area was also affected and the “productive surface generated a demerit”. The Central Government and the railway infrastructure company ADIF have the right to appeal the decision.

A THIRD OF POR TACABIN CLASSROOMS TO BE ELIMINATED The regional minister for education, culture and sport, María José Català, has confirmed that 35% of existing prefabricated classrooms, or portacabins, currently being used by schools across the region, will be removed by the end of the 2013 to 2014 school year. The statement was made as the minister was underlying the government´s intention to meet their “stated objective” which the President of the Generalitat, Alberto Fabra, made at the beginning of his mandate. In July 2011, the region had 929 temporary classrooms and in the last two years have eliminated 187, including those which have been taken away from schools who still had a need for them of course, such as was the case on the Orihuela Costa at the end of 2011, as we reported that “This meant even more kids crammed into the existing blocks and an overall lack of basic facilities conducive to an educational environment”. However, the number is to be added the 142 to be removed upon completion of the works of the five centres that are being built, including the school in
Torrevieja, set to open in a matter of weeks. Therefore, by the end of the school year, 329 prefabricated classrooms will be removed, one in three, according to the ministry. The opening of these centres will mean that 5,600 students in the region will start their next academic year in proper schools, but by the calculations given by the ministry, that must presumably also mean that over 10,000 look set to continue to be crammed into unsuitable, “temporary” accommodation, as has been the case for entire generations in certain areas of the region.
MUCH MALIGNED STINGRAYS Following your article about Stingrays in last weeks Costa Blanca Leader, I took this photo on Higuericas beach at Pilar. My wife was sitting in the water about a metre out with a friends young grandson when they saw what they thought was a black plastic bag floating towards her. It wasn't until it got to about a metre away from them did she realise that it was a 'fish' of some kind. She then called me over. Standing in the water and walking backwards it appeared to follow me for a couple of minutes then as more people started to come into the water it turned and made out to sea and then disappeared as quickly as it came in. I then emailed a friend of mine who is a marine biologist in Fiji and his reply was 'did I swim with it'. As you
said in your article they are normally friendly and only aggressive if they feel threatened. He also told me that when he was working in the Cayman Islands they have Stingray City where you can swim with and feed the stingrays. Ian Catt Campoverde

MAN DIES BULL FIGHTING RETURNS TO SPANISH TV TRAPPED From the 1st of September, bull fighting will return to Spanish TV, with José Antonio Morante de la Puebla, who is recovering from a revenge attack by a bull, and Alejandro Talavante taking to the ring after a break from television screens for over a year. In a statement, the broadcaster says that the return is “part of the philosophy of the RTVE Corporation to recognise the national fiesta in response to its cultural, economic and social development in Spain”. The return of the bulls to TVE is possible through an agreement reached last year with the Mesa del Toro, which involves the transfer of rights to broadcast the tournaments, “This means that bullfighters, and livestock and businessman José María Garzón transfer their broadcasting
rights to facilitate transmission via TVE, who only face the costs necessary for the technical deployment for retransmission”, explains TVE. After a 5 year break, it was September, 2012, when bull fighting was last seen on TV, with an average audience of 1.2 million viewers and a 12.7% audience share. In context, last weekend, the biggest audience watching Spanish television chose Antena 3, with 3.6 million people tuning in to watch the Formula 1, a record 35.5% of the audience share. In the UK last week, just over 2 million viewers watched Sam Evans take victory in the Big Brother final on Channel 5, whereas 6.9 million people saw Peter Capaldi announced as the next Doctor Who. On Friday, 7.6 million people tuned in to see Tina argue with David in Coronation Street.

IN LIFT
A 51 year old man died at the weekend inside of a lift of a building on calle Poeta Altet in Valencia, having believed to have suffered a stroke after being stuck for three hours. A friend and roommate of the victim believes that the man left the apartment home at around 4 in the afternoon on Saturday, in order to take his dog down to the street level for exercise. The next known interaction was some 30 minutes later when a girl tried to use the lift, only to find it wasn´t working. Some three hours later, engineers attended and found the lift was on the ground floor, but the doors were stuck closed, but through the glass they could see the body of a male, who was on the ground, along with a dog. The emergency services were called at around 19:30 and fire, police and ambulance crews all attended, with fire fighters having to prize the doors open. Medics checked for vital signs of life, but could only confirm that the man had died. Police sources have confirmed that the death was due to natural causes. Neighbours report that they heard no sounds of alarms, dog barking or other calls for help.

LEADER PROSECUTOR SEEKS PRISON FOR KILLER KENNEL OWNERS ADVERTISING HOTLINE
The Prosecutor of Cádiz has requested a year in prison for the director, the manager and the two veterinarians who operate the kennels of Puerto Real, accused of crimes of animal cruelty, for sacrificing animals in their facility in order to save costs. They have also asked for a three year disqualification period prohibiting them from being active in any profession, trade or business that is related to the animals. The El Refugio animal protection group had asked for an 18 month prison sentence, after an investigation into the centre revealed that they routinely administered the drug Mioflex, for which the “animal literally dies from drowning and are aware of it”. In the prosecution case notes, the explanation states that “the practice of such sacrifices are so cruel and painful and were ordered by the defendants in the exercise of their powers of leadership and management in order to reduce costs, since the price of medicines that are used in an ethical and regulated euthanasia is considerably higher”. Both senior members of staff were aware, according to the prosecution, that “such practices were performed by veterinarians from the centre”, with the intention of obtaining “a greater benefit”, but with a “lack of sensitivity” to the animals. Nacho Paunero, president of El Refugio, has very much applauded the decision of the prosecutor, as it represents “a step forward in protecting animals” and this case is yet another first for Spain in which animal abusers are brought to justice. HIP HO P PAR TY IN ORIHU ELA On the 7th of September, Orihuela will play host to a rather unique festival, specifically aimed at younger members of the community, as their encore to summer before returning to school or college. The councillor for young people has announced a cultural festival, under the name ‘Hip-Hop’, which, in conjunction with Vega Sound 2013, will bring some of the best in ‘street’ music, art and culture together at the Los Huertos exhibition ground. As well as popular musical shows from the likes of Capaz Fernández from Málaga, Sharif from Zaragoza, Wol from Sevilla and local performers such as El Grupo, Bastian Trama and GNC 91 NAK, amongst others, there will be a graffiti are exhibition, a street soccer tournament and a lot more to satisfy not only the young, but the young at heart. Starting at noon on Saturday the 7th, the party is set to continue well into the early hours. However, realising that Los Huertos is about 30 minutes from the coast on a good day, the councillor for the coast has said that there may be the possibility of a bus being arranged, allowing attendees to leave their scooters at home, or, perhaps more importantly, meaning mum and dad´s taxi might be able to take the night off, and the youngsters can be set free to enjoy the party without hindrance. A bus is only a possibility at this time, depending on the number of people interested, but if there are enough, the town hall for the coast are more than willing to try to do their bit to take coastal residents to

CARNIVAL TIME IN HONDÓN DE LOS FRAILES
A group from Neighbourhood Watch once again took part in the village carnival at Hondón de los Frailes last weekend. This carnival full of colour, music and dance, is seen locally as a real fun event and this year was no exception. SELF GOVERNING TOWNS OR SATELLITE URBANISATIONS? PART TWO OF TWO The definition of satellite is something that is separated from or on the periphery of something else but is nevertheless dependent on or controlled by it. Satellite towns are geographically separate but politically or economically dependent on another. Both these definitions are applicable to Orihuela Costa which is totally divided from Orihuela by two other local authorities. All political and economic decisions affecting the Costa are made by councillors located some 30 kilometres distance, the majority of whom have no connection at all to the economy, daily life or people residing on the coast. This fact has resulted in the coast being neglected over many years in the provision of services normally provided by the council in all Spanish towns. This neglect is in spite of the coast having a population of 33,227 only 706 people fewer than Orihuela City and being a major, if not the largest contributor to the coffers of Orihuela Town Hall. No where is it easier to recognise the lack of spending on the coast than to compare its non existent facilities with those services provided in small, independent local towns. One of the small-
er independent local authorities close to Orihuela Costa is Los Montesinos with a population less than 5,500 people. This town has evidently spent revenue gained from the building boom and from local taxes on improving the facilities available to inhabitants. Further it has used its political influence within the Valencian Comunidad to ensure that services and infrastructure paid for by Valencia are provided within the town. No where this is more clearly illustrated than the excellent schools situated within Montesinos. Any visitor to Montesinos must be impressed by the well maintained, landscaped park and play area just behind the high street. An amenity well used by residents with children and adults alike who want to relax in very pleasant surroundings. On the other side of the main road is another park / play area. Further within a very short distance there is considerable, easily accessible open land, especially on the eastern shore of the Salina. In front of the Town Hall / Third Age Centre is a large, open, paved area, with another paved plaza just over the road, facing the church. This small town has a clearly defined centre where fiestas and outdoor events take place. This provision of well tended open spaces is in stark contrast to the
neglected state of many Los Montesinos of the parks on Orihuela Town Hall Costa. The Casa de Cultura / Music Union is situated just off the through road. This excellent facility is a very well used venue not only by the many Montesinos societies but also by many expat groups who have nowhere to perform on Orihuela Costa. It is strange that a town as tiny as Los Montesinos should boast such a grand well equipped cultural facility whilst the coast has nothing. Further there are no plans prepared for the construction of a cultural centre for the coast. Montesinos has a modern Town Hall, centrally located where all the administrative functions relating to the town are undertaken. Councillors actually reside in the town and have taken a keen interest in serving the needs of the local population. This is not true of the councillors responsi-
ble for Orihuela Costa! Sandpiper The population of Orihuela Costa need to ensure their voice is heard and the only way to achieve this is to ensure that residents are on the electoral register and make sure they vote in local elections.
ORIHUELA NEWS ROUNDUP The Playa Flamenca town hall is now in possession of numerous “Vado Permanente” signs, which are licenses authorizing a clear passage through gates, drives and roadways, into and out of properties. Anybody with an existing sign will now have to take it to the town hall in order to be issued with a replacement, and anybody who has made a recent application may now be able to collect theirs, if the application was approved. Once issued, the new signs, which feature a bar code and unique number, will be the only type recognized as valid across the municipality.
volunteers are cataloging the books, with an aim to have the facility opened in time for the Spanish and English courses at the end of September, into October. The department is still looking for more volunteers, perhaps from those who were vocal about the need for a library on the coast before this community initiative was announced. Information from the census of street names conducted prior to the summer has now been compiled, resulting in the town hall of Orihuela being able to prepare a tender document for replacing and maintaining street signs in the municipality, with immediate attention given to streets with no name, with signs made from durable and theft-proof materials, wherever possible. Orihuela town hall will shortly be starting work on the North underpass of the N332, near to the Playa Flamenca town hall, in order to improve pedestrian access and safety. The narrow pavement on one side of the road will be removed, to enable the other side do be doubled in width, thus providing a safer passage for pedestrians, which will then be continued up the hill, along the road and to a zebra crossing in order to pass through the traffic flow.
The councilor for the coast of Orihuela, Martina Schreurer, has announced approval of the final stage in the project for creating a “Reading Point” on the Orihuela Costa, with the acquisition of a computer, complete with software for operating a library lending service, which will ultimately be available via the internet, and the budget to purchase shelves and furniture being cleared. Within a couple of weeks, that furniture will be in place, whilst the three
cone shaped ashtrays, specifically designed for beach use, in an attempt to try to reduce the number of cigarette ends left in the sand.
The Spanish National Beach Volleyball competition will take place on the Orihuela Costa for the firt time in history, with around 500 competitors and their entourage descending on the area, for the tournament that will run from the 5th to the 8th of September. The televised event is expected to raise the profile of the coat, whilst also increasing tourism and the environment, and the games can be watched free of charge. In a proactive attempt to keep the beaches cleaner this summer, staff from the Orihuela council have been patrolling the beaches, trying to encourage responsible waste disposal, such as using dustbins and taking rubbish home. They have also been issuing
The transport department of Orihuela town hall has almost completed a project, in which they intend to ask for feedback on the public transport network such as buses. The aim is to look at both the existing routes and potential new ones, to see if any improvements can be made without extra cost. The questionnaire will be available in a number of languages and via the official town hall website, once launched. The tourism department of Orihuela has been overwhelmed by the response to the guided tours of the city, which have been conducted in both Spanish and English, some with a costumed and theatrical guide, and have now been extended to offer “bolt on” additions such as transport and meals. The tour places have been occupied by numerous different nationalities, all keen to learn a little about the culture rich city of Orihuela.

EGYPT THREAT TO SPANISH ECONOMY The repulsion of images of violence in Egypt are considerably disturbing for civilised society of comprehend, but the crisis may have a far reaching economic impact, as the European Union has banned the sale of weapons to the African country. Despite the financial crisis in Spain, one sector which has still been heavily funded is that of the military and weapons, but the Military Airbus factory in Seville will be getting edgy now as Spain had brokered a deal in January to sell Egypt 6 of the Casa C-295 transport aircraft, for delivery in Autumn, which has now been paralysed by the ban. The Casa C-295 is a medium tactical transport aircraft developed in the nineties, before it was encompassed in the European aerospace giant EADS. The Spanish Air Force themselves has 13 units in service. Egypt commissioned their first C-295 in 2010, and this latest order would bring their fleet up to a total of 12 by 2014, which would have meant that there would be 121 of these aircraft flying for 17 different countries, the cost of each aircraft being 20 million euro. Airbus closed the deal with Egypt to deliver the third batch of aircraft, as well as

On Wednesday the interministerial committee met to review the licenses already granted. Spanish law is very strict in terms of export of arms and dual-use material. Their argument is that the aircraft are not used for attacking, but for troop transport and material, and can be used in maritime surveillance missions as well as medical evacuation. They are, therefore, not necessarily “weapons” and the sale should con-
tinue. There is however no civilian version of the aircraft. They decided to suspend the order for “precautionary” reasons. Egypt is one of Spain´s best customers when it comes to military spending. In addition to the 50 million euro paid in 2012 for the two C-295´s, domestic enterprises exported materials worth around 42 million euro in the same year, with the Spanish government having approved a total of 46 licenses for military export to the African country.

DIY TO BRING MORE TRAFFIC CHAOS The hundreds of thousands of drivers who have sat in summer queues on the N332 in Torrevieja may be somewhat concerned to learn that traffic is soon to get a lot worse, as Torrevieja town hall is to reclassify land near the salt factory, to enable the construction of a new 32,000 square metre DIY retail store.
The multinational Kingfisher Group, which includes B&Q and ScrewFix, amongst the 6 brands they represent, plans to build a Brico Depot store on the plot near the cemetery, on the west side of the N332, to compliment their store already thriving in Elche. The site is centric to other DIY stores, such as Brico King (previously named Ardy), who have already struggled since the opening of Akí in the Habaneras centre, who in turn have suffered since Leroy Merlin opened at Zenia Boulevard. The area is in a prime location to the road network, assuming traffic was able to flow along it, with the link road used by trucks to collect salt from the Salinas for worldwide distribution. The site is included in the 1986 General Plan, part of 132,000 square metres devoted to industrial activity, where larger vehicles would take up less road space, but the modification reduces that area and provides 16,000 square metres of land for a store built on two floors. The change in the plan will also call for 10% of the land to be converted to “green” land, for parks and gardens, but will require final approval.

NEW 170MPH VAUXHALL TAKES BOW AT FRANKFURT By Nick Ir eland With a top speed of 170mph and power output of 325PS, the new Insignia VXR SuperSport remains the UK’s fastest car you can buy under £30,000! Now benefiting from a raft of design and chassis revisions which have been made across the entire Insignia range, the new Insignia VXR SuperSport will receive its world premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show (September 12-22). As before, the SuperSport is available as either a Hatch or Sports Tourer, but externally both models have received a re-styled front and rear, with signature VXR design elements such as distinctive ‘saber-tooth’ detailing at the front and the tailpipe trim integrated into the rear valence. The SuperSport’s adaptive all-wheel-drive chassis has also been improved, with around 60 per cent of the car’s rear suspension components receiving revisions, while the car’s front HiPerStruts – which prevent geometry changes during
hard cornering – remain an innovative feature in this class. Complementing this, are modifications to the ESP software for even more precise handling and control of understeer, and upgrades to the damper software as part of the SuperSport’s FlexRide adaptive damping system. In addition, NVH (Noise Vibration Harshness) behaviour has been fine-tuned to achieve greater refinement for occupants, enhancing the SuperSport’s credentials as one of the UK’s best-value performance saloon cars. With six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel-drive, the new Insignia VXR SuperSport reaches 60mph from zero in just 5.9 seconds (6.1 seconds for Sports Tourer) and on to a top speed of 170mph. Its drivetrain incorporates an electronically controlled 4x4 system, operating on Haldex principles and an electronic limited-slip differential. It constantly adapts to prevailing road conditions and varies torque distribution seamlessly between the front and rear axles, as well as between the rear wheels. Other important changes to the Insignia VXR SuperSport range include an all-new instrument panel and central console design, which incorporates optional Bluetooth-operated internet connectivity, an 8-inch touchscreen, 3D navigation and voice control. DAB is standard across the SuperSport range. News on the new model in LHD mode under the Opel banner to follow from the Frankfurt show.

They rehearse every Friday April/May. Rehearsals for this term begin on
The annual fiesta to celebrate Pilar de la Horadada’s separation from Orihuela commenced on 22nd August with the inauguration of the new village square in Campoverde by the Mayor, Don José Fidel Ros Samper. On 23rd August the celebrations continued with a musical evening in the new square. The event started with Pilar’s own choir, Coro Horadada, singing several songs in Spanish. Before the Campoverde choir, Coro Pilar, took the stage their Musical Director, Zinoviy Harvat on accordion, his son Nazariy on flute, accompanied by Aurelio Martinez Lopez on keyboard entertained the large audience with a variety of musical pieces. Zinoviy then changed his accordion for his baton and Coro Pilar took the stage opening with Paul Simon’s ‘The Sound of Silence’ this was followed by ‘El Condor Pasa’ better known as ‘If I Could’, words again by Paul Simon. The Choir then sang ‘Sierra Madre’, a German song which was arranged by Zinoviy, followed by three Spanish songs, ‘La Paloma’, ‘Sin Ti’
and ‘Solamente Una Vez’ which were very well received by the audience. The closing number was a rousing rendition of an American gospel song ‘Heaven’. A good time was had by everyone and the festivities carried on until the early hours of the morning, the Spanish certainly know how to party. The Choir would like to thank our Musical Director, Zinoviy Harvat, his son, Nazariy who accompanied us so well on his flute and Aurelio Martinez Lopez who, for the first time and we hope not the last, accompanied the choir on the keyboard. SO METHING FOR THE W EEKEND SIR?
Since the early to mid 90´s, when the term Metrosexual was coined, a neologism, derived from the words metropolitan and heterosexual, male body grooming has become second nature to many, even forming a now natural part of everyday routines. According to over 10,000 people surveyed by grooming product company Gillette, 82% of the Spanish male population is now shaved, cut or trimmed, in terms of body hair. Of the 3,500 men and 7,000 women, Spain now comes in second place when it comes to ‘bodystyling’, as it has become known, second only to Italy where 85% of men sculpt their body hair. Both the Italian and Spanish men are way ahead of the Brits and French though, where only 59% and 52% respectively partake in some kind
of torso trimming treatment, although the groomed areas also spread to ‘other’ areas. Spanish men are growing in their belief that trimming is the preferred option though, beating all other countries, as 92% of those questioned think that men should shave their body. It´s not only men who think this is a good idea though, because as well as those surveyed, some of the women classed as the world´s sexiest babes have been championing the trimmed look too, with Rafael Nadal, Brad Pitt and Cristiano Ronaldo all making the top of the charts when it comes to men and their bodies desired by lots of beautiful women.

SMOKING TO BE BANNED AT BUS STOPS
Whilst the government of Madrid are considering allowing smoking in the new casino being planned, as the financial gains far outweigh the risks to life, they say, the Health Council of the Principality of Asturias has released the draft “Comprehensive Care on Drugs Act”, which goes far the opposite way, seeking to protect citizens from tobacco smoke. One of the main changes is the prohibition of smoking in all “covered shelters that are waiting areas for the purpose of road transport”, which means bus stops primarily, as well as other confined and public spaces, with some onus on schools and children, all of which have been welcomed by the National Committee for Smoking Prevention. Francisco Camarelles, spokesperson for the committee, says, “Any exposure to in the environment to tobacco
smoke is harmful. All efforts to avoid exposure and also create social awareness is very positive”. According to Camarelles, the law is “perfect”, and “everything that represents an improvement is always welcome”. Adding that “This will also serve to help smokers become aware that smoking may harm the health of other people too”. However, spokesperson for the IU political group, Manuel González Orviz, said that the new rules are an example of the “harassment and persecution” that smokers are subjected to. Another element of the act is the prohibition of the consumption of alcohol by anybody under the age of 18, which brings the region in line with the rest of Spain, whereas local children were able to drink from the very young age of 16.

HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY VILLAMARTIN
By Paul Durrant The very enjoyable Roda course entertained the Hubbers last week, with the usual members, but a very welcome glut of guests, so much so that guest prizes were extended down to fourth place. Suffice to say the course was in its usual fine condition under the excellent guidance of Jose Antonio Hernandez Ballesteros and staff. Just the five birdies, but a reasonable 91 pars was a fair reflection on the assorted abilities on show. Gary Davies enjoyed one of the birdies on the par 3, 157 metres, 13th watched enviably by both sons, Harry and Oliver. It contributed to a 19 point back 9 but only 3rd place on countback. Another birdie boy was Cliff Smith, his on the 18th, 486 metre, par 5. His reward, 4 points and a 21 point back 9 but no podium. Gary Gates repeated the effort for a 21 point back 9 and similar-
ly no podium. Best of the guests was veteran John Stevenson with 22 points on the way in and a 37 point total for the PJ´s Rentacar best guest award. Everyone seemed to save their best golf for the returning 9, Seamus McGeehan, Paul Durrant and Dave Lethaby all recording 20 points, with all three members making up the winners rostrum. Results: PJ´s Rent a Car best guest: 4th Andy Lock 35pts, 3rd Gary Davies 36pts, 2nd Kevin Keelan 36pts, st John Stevenson 37pts. N.T.P: Hole 7 Cam McHardy, Hole 11 Seamus McGeehan, Hole 15 Seamus McGeehan Hub Grand Prix: 3rd Paul Durrant 33pts, 2nd Seamus McGeehan 33pts, 1st Dave Lethaby 35pts.
TMGS MATCH REPORT; 28TH AUGUST 2013. Many, if not all of us, would have got out of bed, looked outside and seen that it had been raining and in most areas still was raining and maybe wondering if we were in for a wet round of golf. However, it was pleasing that the rain in Spain did fall on the plain and not on the golf course at Villamartin, which was our venue for the day. It is fair to say that in general, the course is in good condition, with the exception of the tee boxes that need some more TLC. It was pleasing to see some nice scores being entered and it sure pleased John “Scissor-hand” Hagart who rubbed his hands in delight with the 3 imminent cuts to handicaps, especially to the overall top scorer “The Silver Fox”, George Smith who won the Silver Division with 39 points and a long way back in 2nd place with 33 points was Kate Helm with Andy Skinner and “The Don” Peter Mason claiming 3rd and 4th places with 32 points. The Gold Division scores were a bit tighter and it was Janet Mason who took home the bacon with 38 points, pushing Steve Higgins into 2nd place on 37 points. Third place was taken by the “Hippy” Richard Wale on 36 points and 4th spot went to Paula Haggart on 35 points. The Best Visitor of the day was R. Abbot with 36 points and 3 of the four NTP’s were claimed by Roger Nilsen, Andy Skinner and Steve Higgins. Photo is of the Gold Category winners. Our next game, Wednesday 4th September 2013 see’s us at El Valle,
so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs.org or call the Match Secretary on 966 71 9604. We also run small matches on Friday’s and if you fancy a fun knock around, contact Steve Higgins on 968978188.
FAIRWAYZ GOLF SOCIETY .......... By Steve Lawrence. If I was a duck I would be quacking my head off today, paddling in the mud and holding my head up to feel the rain on my beak!! But I'm not, I am an average handicap golfer who prefers to play golf in my shorts and polo shirt, with the sun on my back. Unfortunately today, the one day of the week I play golf, the heavens opened and we got a good soaking. Well only on the last 4 holes really, and I know we need some rain, but why on a Thursday for heavens sake! There's 6 other whole days in the week that it can rain! I'm not whingeing, I just couldn't think of anything else to write about really. A good number of members and guests turned out today, Thursday 29th August, to play at Alenda golf. The course was it's usual superb condition, only the damp on the ground and the rain that came later held up the run of the ball. Some good and bad scores were posted today. The prize winners were as follows:-
Gold Category. 1st Alex Duchart - 37pts. 2nd Bob McShane - 31pts. Best front 9 Steve Hamilton. Best back 9 - Steve Ashurst. Nearest the pin - Dave Harwood. Nearest the pin in 2 - Alex Duchart. Silver Category. 1st Dave Titchen - 33pts. 2nd Tony Macmillan - 28pts. Best front 9 Bill Howie. Best back 9 - Phil Bowditch. Nearest the pin - Stuart Taylor. Nearest the pin in 2 - Graham Butterworth. 2 ball winners were:- Dave Harwood; Colin Pepperday; Alex Duchart. Thanks to all members and guests for a good turn out. Next week 5th Sept, we are scheduled to play at Altorreal, however this may change. Players will be notified of any changes. The following week we are playing at Alicante golf.

SMGS AT LA FINCA La Finca was the venue for the last round of this season’s eclectic Stableford competition which has given society members five chances to achieve their best possible score on each of La Finca’s holes! The theoretical card that’s produced after each round certainly takes on an uncanny collection of 3 pointers with the leading few even having a smattering of four pointers!! The leaders after four rounds were already in possession of point tallies up in the low 50’s. It’s a very close fought affair this year and the worthy winner will be unveiled on Captain’s Night on the 28th of next month along with the other special competition prize-winners. Just imagine if our sadistic handicap secretary decided to cut the winners on their final eclectic cards – they could lose about 5 or 6 shots at one mighty slash! ……that would rather take the shine off winning!! Anyway, maybe we shouldn’t give him any crazy ideas. The area got a quick, but pretty thorough, soaking early on Wednesday morning which cooled things down a fraction but also helped to slow the greens down with the dampness clinging on to the longer than usual grass for most of the day. A bit of rumbling thunder in the background and a few darkish clouds appearing now and again meant brollies were kept at the ready but luckily they didn’t have to be used. With nobody managing to stay on the 3rd green, only three NTP’s were claimed and the prizes went to Phil Birtwistle (Hole 6), Chris Hamblett (Hole 13) and Theo Boelhouwer (Hole 16). Winners of the day’s Stableford competition were: SILVER – Captain Steve Davis in 3rd with 38pts (C/B), 2nd was Gary Miller also with 38 (C/B) and winner was John Aitchison with a commendable 40 pts. GOLD – 3rd was John Osborne (34), 2nd was Steve Fleet (38) and top of the gold shop was Ken Flaherty, just back from holiday, with 39 pts. Congratulations to all concerned. Please keep checking in on www.smgs.org as the Wednesday meetings are filling up fast and getting extra tee times is becoming a difficult task. Alternatively you can always give Baz a quick buzz on 966 731 033 and he’ll be delighted to keep you updated….don’t forget visitors are always made very welcome.

‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. CLOSURE OF LA TERCIA A few weeks ago I reported upon the concerns regarding the closure of the 9 hole course at La Tercia where there the aqua driving range and the majority of the clubhouse had been closed and the course was generally in a poor state of maintenance. There had been no official announcement issued by the course management regarding the situation. I have tried, without success to obtain any form of response from the company who managed La Tercia. However having visited the course it is very clearly closed and according to local residents has been so for two weeks. The question is whether this is just a sign of hard economic times, poor management, standard and quality of courses or just a sign of the over development in recent years. I guess we will never know but following hard on the heels of Mosa Trajectum we will have to hope that there are no more closures of this type although with 18 courses in Murcia alone we still have plenty to choose from but maybe it will focus the remaining courses on customer care and value for money. HOLLOW TINING Following on from last week remember that the following courses are hollow tining this week: Aguilon, El Plantio, Font Del Llop, La Finca. La Manga North, La Marquesa, La Serena, La Torre, Las Colinas, Las Ramblas, Saurines, Villaitana Poniente and Villamartin. ROCKETS GOLF SOCIETY - DOUG MADDISON TROPHY LAS COLINAS GOLF – 26th August 2013 This was the fourth year that the Doug Maddison Trophy was played for and the second time at Las Colinas. 20 members and guests played a medal for the above trophy. As you can imagine there were lots of UGHs OH’s which is called moaning when it was announced this year the competition would that the format was a medal. But there must have been something extra in the Las Colinas beverages as the scores returned were more that on par than if we had played a Stableford game. And you cannot keep the “Arfur” out of the frame adding two Nearest The Pins and Les Yates was not going to be out done either! Taking Nearest the Pins twice and getting the same nett score but his back 9 perfomance must have been poorer. Les, Check what Arfur is on!,. The course in good condition with the weather was a few degrees cooler thanks to a lovely breeze. The results were as follows. Gold Category: 1st Larry Lambe 72 - Doug Maddison Trophy, 2nd Arthur Williams 74 C/B, 3rd Les Yates 74, 4th Alan Barratt 78, 5th Peter Root 79 Silver Category: 1st Mick Hithersay 76: 2nd Ron Nicholson 77: 3rd Ken Hopkins 74. 4th Malcolm Wood 80, 4th Geoff Wild 82 Nearest The Pin: Hole: Ron Swift: Hole 10 & 15: Arthur Williams: 7 & 17 Les Yates Longest Drive: Alan Clifford. In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services By Mike Probert at Villamartin 29th August 2013. For this month’s society meeting a group of 34 players visited the established course at Villamartin taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The previous evening we had a terrible thunderstorm bringing back memories of our only cancelled fixture in 7 years on the same course in February this year. The weather was pleasant with slightly lower temperatures than normal although there was a hint on thunder at one point on the back nine. The course was in reasonably good condition but a few of the tee box positions had seen better days and should have been moved by the greens staff. The winning scores were as follows: 1st: Dave Mason – 36 pts, 2nd: Dave Bensley – 36 pts, 3rd:Tom Kendrick – 36 pts, 4th – Gavin Parke – 35 pts, Best Front 9: Steve Rhodes – 23 pts, Best Back 9:Ron Kerry – 20 pts Dog of a Day Trophy – Martin Jones, Best Guest:Will Hobbs – 30 pts NTP: Dave Blinston, Steve Rhodes, Dave Mason and Gavin Parke. After the game we returned to the Lo Marabu, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation. GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB BY STEVE HIBBERD
This years summer club knockout competitions reached a conclusion last week. First up was the 2 wood singles championship, in which Phil Lockley emerged triumphant against Terry Lemon, a contest which was competently marked by John O'Brien. Then it was the ladies invitation pairs, featuring Sandra Heath/Brian Pocock against Jeannie Clements/Steve Cantley, and what a humdinger it turned out to be! It's fair to say that right up to the last end, it could have gone either way, but 1 shot on the last end meant that 2013 champions are Sandra & Brian. Another competition to become resolved, was the final of the change partners league (what do some of these bowlers get up to?). Tony French & Lin Miller emerged champions, whilst Hilda Cork & Brian Miller took the runners up slot. On the subject of internal leagues, don't forget that the new Tues & Thurs leagues start on 17 & 19 Sep respectively, of which the entry lists are filling up nicely. Jim Oliver, joint organiser of the Saturday club, has sent me details of last weeks get together, and I quote: "Yet another ladies winner, with top prize going to Joan Oliver (brandy), who narrowly beat Charles Langlois (beer) into 2nd place on count back. Winners of the wine were Dave Dudding and Michael Keating, who really wanted the duty free brandy, as he is off back to Ireland for a few months. The wooden spoon winner will be named this week, as it was good to see Jim McLean back on his feet, although still a bit wobbly, hence the spoon. Look forward to seeing everyone again next Saturday".

SAN MIGUEL PREPARATION ON TRACK FOR EUROS The European Bowls Championships arrives in Spain this month for the first time ever and San Miguel Bowls Club are hard at work making the final preparations for the tournament, as co hosts with Emerald Isle Bowls Club. Later this month our European guests will arrive and all areas of where work is needed have been identified by the committee and now they are busy ticking the final things of the list. The trolleys have been updated and are now in excellent condition. The seat benches have been refurbished or replaced with new ones. The ditch liners have been replaced to fall within the modern development requirements for a holding service. The project to improve the viewing facilities plus the general painting of the walls etc is now well in hand. They are also looking to add an extra scoreboard which will show the countries that are competing plus the score as the matches will be “set play.” San Miguel Bowls Club and Emerald Isle Bowls Club are now looking forward to the end of the month. After months of meetings and preparations, the month of the European Championships has arrived and all of their hard work will be made truly worthwhile as the European guests arrive and the tournament begins.

ELCHE: IT’S GETTING EXCITING! BY JOHN MCGREGOR
UD ALMERIA...............2 ELCHE CF ......................2
Following last week’s capture of Carlos ‘The Rock’ Sanchez to solidify Elche’s previously lightweight midfield, this week the Illicitanos signed the 20 year-old Ghanian striker Richmond Boakye from Juventus on a one-year loan. The big, prolific striker is just want Elche need, and he began this local derby between fellow promotees to La Liga on the Elche bench. Otherwise the Franjiverdes started with the blend of old and new that drew last week with Real Sociedad. Sound Elche goalkeeper Manu Herrera was soon in action, pushing a fierce shot wide, but it didn’t take Almeria long to open the scoring: ten minutes had gone when top scorer Soriano glanced his header into the corner, following a long, accurate cross from the right. Elche looked lively and on the half-hour Fidel’s cross was clearly handled by Pellerano. Cool Hand Luke, Elche’s penalty-taker Edu Albacar duly slotted it wide of Estaban in the Almeria goal to put the Illicitanos’ level. Following a great Herrera save the rebound was put back in, but fortunately ruled offside, this immediately countered by Elche sweeping up to the other end and from a wide, inswinging Albacar free kick last season’s top scorer Coro’s header was gratefully gathered by Estaban: 1 – 1 at half time. Only two minutes had gone in the second half when Almeria went ahead again. This time the home side won a penalty as the Franjiverdes new right back Sapurano handled inside the box, and it was Verza’s turn to slot in his penalty to make it 2 – 1. With halfan-hour left Moral was taken off for Boakye to make his debut, soon being clearly fouled by Dubarbier who was sent off for his second foul. Coro’s quicksilver run took him clear but Estaban rushed out to smother the ball, and substitute Aaron put his shot just wide as the visitors went for the equaliser against the ten men, but despite pressure and chances there was no success. Just when it looked like that would be the final result the match moved into time added on, in the 94th minute Herrera launched a huge kick downfield. Coro received it, controlled the ball, slipping it to Boakye who with his back to goal swivelled round to crack the ball into the corner of the Almeria net to huge travelling delight from the debut
striker, the team and the considerable number of noisy, rewarded Elche supporters who had made the short trip down the coast to support their newly-promoted team. A 2 – 2 draw looked the right result although it will be Almeria who will feel the most frustrated by the result. It was an excellent result for Elche, and bodes well for survival in La Liga, as it has taken time for Elche coach Fran Escriba to acquire the blend of skill and experience needed to survive. It’s early days, but it would seem in the City of Palms there is much to be excited about. The bookings are coming thick and fast, particularly in defence which will ultimately mean suspensions: let’s hope this doesn’t happen to the Illicitanos later as has happened crucially in the past to cause grief, i.e. no decent substitutes to come in and play well enough to ensure adequate results. Due to the internationals next week Elche don’t play again until Monday September 16th at 20.00 against old friends Valladolid. With two points from the first three games this will be valuable time for the new players to get used to each other and hopefully blend into a team which can consolidate their new position in the top flight of Spanish football. Mucho Elche!

Congratulations were extended to Gogarty´s (La Zenia) who won the league title on the last match of the season and also the very last leg. POINT APIECE IN FOUR GOAL THRILLER CD LLOSA..................2 FC TORREVIJA......2 Torry visited Llosa, the place where ex Man City legend Bert Trautman recently passed away, last Sunday afternoon, for their first away match of the season. Manager Anselmo made 2 changes to the starting line up from the previous match, bringing back suspension served Vicente, plus striker Obele, whilst new loan signing Dani Lucas was one of the substitutes. Llosa had the first clear chance of the day, but fortunately they failed to trouble Carrion in Torry's goal. On 14 mins, a Torry attack broke down, then Llosa went straight up the other end and scored. Three minutes later, they were level. Carrasco's volley was brilliantly saved, then from the corner, Valeolivas firmly headed home at the far post. Torry were in control, as the home side looked jittery in defence, the best chance being when Valeolivas picked up a clearance on the edge of the box, but shot wide. Llosa nearly scored when Vicente gifted the ball to an opponent close to goal, but luckily nothing came of it. Early in the 2nd half, a terrible mix up in Torry's goal mouth, led to the ball being squeezed home at the 4th attempt. Within minutes it was all square again, this time Carrasco made something out of nothing, by smashing home a half chance. Gasch, Pastor and Dani Lucas (making his Torry debut), all came on as subs, as the game ended in a hard fought draw. On Sat 7 Sep, ko 7pm, Torry welcome La Liga side Elche to Vicente Garcia Stadium, for a benefit match. Then on Sun 8 Sep new boys Torre Levante arrive for another home div 3 match.
ALMORADI TAME REDS ALMORADI 3 HORADADA 0 Horadada only looked a shadow of their former selves as they found themselves a goal behind within 30 seconds of the new season getting underway and on this form they are an awful long way from anything like the side that won the Preferente last season. Facing last seasons runners up, now managed by former fitness coach Paco, the Reds were 3 down by the interval. It was only after the side had been reshuffled during the ht interval that they made any sort of impression but with Almoradi starting in blistering form it was far too little and too late for Horadada.
