BACK TO SCHOOL WITH A BANG
As the gloomy faces of children marks the return to school for the next academic year, the unfair imbalance of investment becomes even clearer to see than ever before, with some 7,489 students in primary education in Orihuela, and 6,271 in Torrevieja. With cuts affecting education across the whole country, we
are aware of the limited budget available to the regional education authority, under the control of the Partido Popular, and, for whatever the reason, we are already aware that PP run Torrevieja has benefitted from being one of the few municipalities to receive a hefty amount of money, whereas in Orihuela, the local government which is led by a bi-party coalition of the PSOE and Los Verdes have not been so lucky, with many students returning to portacabin classrooms, where entire generations have spent the most important part of their early learning experiences.
In his usual start of term announcement the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dol贸n from the PP, said that he was particularly delighted at the continued reduction in class sizes which once again would be well below the Ministry of Education recommendation of 30 students per class, as the average number of pupils in classrooms in Torrevieja is 25 pupils per teacher. Dol贸n made his statement about class sizes whilst visiting the C.P. Acequi贸n school, on their first day back in term, when he said that the current class size in Torrevieja averContinued on Page 2

Continued from Page One aged just 25 students per class and although one or two schools are slightly higher than he would like, with Gratiniano Baches having 28.11 and La Purísima with 30.11, Ciudad de Oviedo has just 18.93 pupils per class. Over in Orihuela however, the story is the exact opposite. Councillor for education in the municipality, Rosa Martínez of the PSOE, is far from satisfied that students returning to the portacabin school of the Virgen del Camino, are crammed together into class sizes of 42 pupils per teacher, on a 300 square metre site, with no playground, library and three portacabins, which Martínez says doesn´t even comply with the “legal regulations”, although rehabilitated would mean the school could “accommodate more children of the municipality who could attend school with dignity”, although the remodelling would cost 240,000 euro, which is the direct responsibility of the regional government, the same source who are funding the renewal of schools in Torrevieja. It is a similar situation on the Orihuela Costa, at the IES Playa Flamenca, where physical conditions are particularly bleak for the students and staff who have to work in the facility, let alone the fact that the school facilities are grossly inadequate to facilitate learning, even worse when it rains, as the school is on the bank of a water flow down to the sea. Rosa Martinez, Councillor for Education in Orihuela, where, in the Virgen del Camino school, the classes are crammed with 42 students. conditions are worse than what many would like prisoners to be served in, where there is no room for exercise, and hardly enough room to eat, although that is more than the public college of el Manjón, which has no dining room at all. Orihuela currently has a total of 7 schools which have some level of work outstanding, whether that be repairs or the completion of the construction, the regional department of education are still not prepared to provide any kind of information as to when work may actually continue, persistently ignoring requests from the local government team. In July of this year, the Orihuela Mayor, Monserrate Guillén, met with the Regional Secretary of Education in Valencia, Rafael Carbonell, after the regional head finally
gave in to the demands for a meeting, but time was still wasted as there was “still no news of the agreement after two years of broken promises”. The local council team did emphasise the “urgent need for the classrooms to be rehabilitated as soon as possible in order to provide adequate facilities to the students who attend the centres daily”, using theSecondary School in Playa Flamenca and the classrooms of the Virgen del Camino to emphasise their case which has still not been resolved by the regional administration. Of course it´s not just the local area affected by cuts in education, tighter rules for scholarships, increasing tuition fees and the ongoing debate about educational reform. As a direct result of their ongoing battle with the national government, teachers across Spain have called for a day of industrial action to take place in October and November. The Plataforma Estatal por la Escuela Pública, an organisation composed of parents, students and teaching unions, has
announced a general strike on the 24th of October, on which day they hope to bring together widespread support for the education sector from all levels of society. Prior to the strike, there is expected to be concentrations in from of all schools and universities, as well as a call for signatures in support of education, the results of which will be presented to the President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, on the 17th of October. After the October strike, the platform intends to launch on a “Green March” from across the country, culminating in an event at the Government buildings in Madrid, with a second general strike already planned for November. Last year, peaceful protests formed a key part of highlighting the believed inadequacies of the government. Quite what will happen this year remains to be seen, but as the national education minister, José Ignacio Wert, saying live on TV that the protests were, “like a birthday party” compared to those in Chile and Mexico, it is quite obvious that the lack of respect shown by the government lead will be seen by those who care about education as yet another insult by the Rajoy government.
Once a sufficient timeframe for renewing the Vado Permanete licenses across the Orihuela municipality has expired, those home owners who have not updated their signs to the latest version, and those who carry fake or erroneous signs, will face sanctions from the town hall. As previously reported, both the Playa Flamenca and Orihuela City town halls have a number of new signs awaiting collection, which will replace those that are no out of date. A total of 1,600 locations have been identified as potentially having the right to display the new sign, but they must be collected from the town hall in exchange for your old one. At the end of this month, action will start to be taken against those who fail to display the correct and valid signs, with a fine of 100 euro and the withdrawal of the rights that the license brings. The councillor for licensing, Antonio Zapata, has said that the process of cleaning the registry has proven difficult, with numerous duplications so two totally different residents could have the same number on their license, others that have the wrong names and a complex task of correcting the data to make it more manageable. Letters were sent out to those residents believed to be entitled to display the sign, inviting them to collect their replacement. This has proven a success already, with 1,300 already collected, although there are still a number of signs, some 300, still to be assigned, and a potentially greater number of old signs incorrectly displayed. The councillor explained that the license can cost between 90 and 150 euro per year, as the streets are divided into different categories. Whenever a vehicle crosses the pavement to access a garage or parking place, the Vado Permanete is required. It is necessary that those who have a license are abreast of their payments under current regulations”.

ORIHUELA FLOOD RISK AS RIO SEGURA CLEAN UP DELAYED ONCE AGAIN
In an area known for it’s regular sufferance of the weather phenomenon ‘gota fría’ where severe storms are expected to batter the city in short bursts, once again Orihuela has failed in its preparation for the anticipated arrival as the summer is expected to give way to a cloudy autumn in the coming days. Although a large quantity of rainfall has already occurred local weather experts predict that it will undoubtedly continue throughout September. In Orihuela the risk of flooding is multiplied along the path of the River Segura, but particularly at the entrance to the city where there are areas that are completely overrun by reeds, mud and sludge. The same problem occurs every year as during the summer the reeds are allowed to grow and multiply on both river banks with no one doing anything to stop or control them. And then with the arrival of the first rains of the autumn they spring into life doubling
and sometimes trebling in size within just a few days. In no time at all they are allowed to completely overrun and clog up the main river channel into Orihuela. This problem is a constant which is allowed to be repeated by the CHS, the government agency responsible for the segura basin, year after year. And the same situation has been allowed to develop once again this year with the agency now rushing workmen into the area at the very last moment to clear the riverbed before the arrival of the anticipated rainy season, which has already got underway this year during the months of August and September, but thankfully, without incident. Now that the work is underway it will continue through to Rojales and along the banks through a number of other ‘black spots’ and nearby towns throughout the Vega Baja and into the region of

MELENDI TO PERFORM AT PILAR FIESTA
Spanish pop singer Melendi will be Pilar’s star turn at the town fiesta being held on 8 October. The announcement was made last Wednesday at a press conference chaired by Cllr Asunción Sánchez. She said that the 32 year old former racing driver, best known for the song ‘Magic Alonso, will perform on October 8 at 23.00 hours in the truck parking lot behind the sports centre. However, unlike his appearance in Torrevieja,
when the town hall paid the promoter 21,778 euro from the municipal funds for the privilege, Sánchez says that his appearance at their fiesta will be “without paying” the artist with public money. Instead, the “council only provide collaboration and transfer of land for the concert”. The poster for the fiesta was chosen from 19 entries submitted by 12 different artists. The winner was David Quesada Conesa . The program of events for the fiesta gets under way on 28 September with the election and coronation of queens and ends on 19 October with the parade of floats. Other artistes that will be performing during the fiesta period will include Golden 70 Live, Fifth Chord, Da Igual and Garçon and of course Melendi who’s song "Con la luna llena" was also chosen as the official theme for the 2004 Vuelta de Espana. Tickets for all the shows will be available from the Town Hall.

FIGHT TO SAVE TORRE DE LA HORADADA BEACHES Conscious of the dramatic loss of sand, the constant appearance of stones and a reduction in the length of the beach along the beaches of Puerto, Las Villas, El Mojon and the Higuericas in Torre de la Horadada the Pilar municipality has been working for several months on a revolutionary new project with the University of Alicante. Fidel Ros, the mayor of PIlar said that the results of a study carried out by the university, which it is said will provide solutions to project the beaches, should be available in the next few weeks. The project includes several proposals such as the installation of dikes or jetties which it is hoped will stabilize each of the beaches and recover much of the width that they originally had, returning to the state they were in 50 years ago. The popular mayor said that once the results of the environmental study are known he will knock on every door to ensure the town gets the funding that it needs in order to regenerate this coastal area.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.
THE SILLY SEASON AND THE SAVAGE ISLANDS For expats living in Spain, the current diplomatic spats between Spain and the UK about Gibraltar are uncomfortable, and potentially worrying. The previously very good relations between Madrid and London have been overshadowed by an often-heated dispute over territory that has lingered for many years. Many observers claim that the current territorial arguments are due to political and economic tensions in both countries, political and financial scandals in Spain, all embraced in the heady mix of the August ‘Silly Season’. Whatever the reasons, frosty relations between countries are always unwelcome news for expats. Recent news reports of another, and similar dispute, this time between Spain and Portugal, relating to Portugal’s Savage Islands, are both interesting and relevant at this particular time. Although vaguely aware of the Savage Islands, I was not aware of any international hostilities until recently. Little public and media attention has been given to this issue, which has troubling international dimensions. It appears that Spain has quietly lodged an appeal with the United Nations to have the islands, which are Portugal's southernmost territory, reclassified as rocks and not islands. This is not merely a question of semantics, because the main purpose is to reduce Portugal’s exclusive economic zone, which is currently the largest in Europe, and a move that would allow Spanish fishing vessels based in the Canary Islands to fish closer to the Portuguese island of Madeira. The Savage Islands are located between Spain’s Canary Islands and
Portugal’s Madeira, which allows Portugal's territorial waters to reach within 40 nautical miles of the Spanish territory. In terms of distance, the Savage Islands are closer to the Canary Islands than Madeira. The Savage Islands have been a Portuguese territory since 1438, unlike the Canary Islands that were colonised by the Spanish. Humans had never been known to set foot in the Savage Islands before the Portuguese discovered it. Interestingly, the islands also have a reputation as the treasure islands of pirates, and there are many stories of hunting for treasure. According to a number of documents, serious digs have been attempted in recent years to recover the hidden treasure, but nothing was found. In more recent times, in 1938, the Permanent Commission of International Maritime Law gave sovereignty of the Savage Islands to Portugal and in 1959, the World Wildlife Fund became interested in the islands and signed a contract with the owner, Luís Rocha Machado. However, in 1971 the Portuguese government intervened and acquired the islands, converting them into a nature reserve. In 1978, the Savage Islands became part of the Madeira Nature Park, which is one of the oldest nature reserves in Portugal, and in 2002, part of the nature reserve was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A small team of wardens currently inhabits the islands. Over the years, the Portuguese navy has seized a number of Spanish fishing vessels for breaching their territorial waters. In Spain and the Canary Islands, fishermen firmly believe that these islands should be reclassified as rocks. Although the Spanish Government publicly states that they do not have an issue over the sovereignty of the Savage Islands, their reclassification would effectively remove 700 years of Portugal's sovereign rights to the islands. Portugal is currently responding to Spain’s actions with its own sub-

mission to the United Nations that contests Spanish claims. In order to underline the point regarding sovereignty, the President of Portugal, Cavaco Silva, recently paid a surprise visit to the islands where he was the first Portuguese head of state to spend a night on the islands, admittedly in the relative comfort of a frigate parked nearby. The United Nations is expected to issue a verdict on the Savage Islands in 2015. It will be interesting to see if the UN supports the claims of an unpopular Spanish Government towards the Savage Islands, which some claim are similar to the diversionary tactics of the Gibraltar issue. TORREVIEJA HOTEL SECTOR REPORTS IMPROVED FIGURES Last Thursday morning a special session was held by representatives of Commerce and Catering. It was chaired by the Mayor of Torrevieja , Eduardo Dolon. The meeting was called in order to address the results of the summer season as well as to confirm the schedule of activities planned for this next quarter of 2013. It was agreed that the commercial sector experienced a significant turnaround compared to previous summers, mainly due to the growth of tourists leading to an increase in sales . It was said that in general , the summer , for both traders and restaurateurs had been good. Most hotels had achieved an occupation figure of at least 88% which had resulted from a significant increase in French tourism as well as positive figures reported from the British, Scandinavian and Russian markets. The Mayor said that he hoped to receive a formal reply from Valencia within the next few days on the liberalization of trading hours in Torrevieja in order to prevent the loss of competitiveness to their Orihuela neighbor who had already obtained this permission. A number of new activities were announced beginning on 21 September along the Paseo Vista Alegre , with a day of "Street Tennis" which would be attended by Juan Carlos Ferrero. This would coincide with a Sports Gala expected to involve some 400 children aged between 4 to 16 years. In addition there would be raffled gifts and tickets to the 'Valencia Open 500 ATP World Tour ' 2013 . A local trade Outlet will be held from 9-13 October, a Traditional Beer Festival on 18 and 19 October and an Associations Day on 20 October. The mayor added that a Christmas Market would also be held in the pedestrianised area of Torrevieja, the dates of which would be announced soon.

VEGA BAJA AND REGIO NAL NEWS ROUNDUP The mayor had failed to pay the mandatory parking fee
The pileup caused queues of over 4 kilometres Drivers on the A-70 motorway near Alicante faced hefty delays on Thursday, after a multiple pileup caused queues of over 4 kilometres, with the police diverting vehicles via the toll road to ease congestion. The incident happened 750 metres from the exit to the Madrid extension, with the worst vehicle affected being a small van which became crushed between two articulated trucks. The driver of that vehicle was rushed to hospital in a serious condition, with the traffic taking over three hours to ease. The Panoramis cinema in Alicante reopened on Friday, after the centre was shut down in February of last year. Eight screens will be showing the latest blockbusters, with the revival of the facility that has created 25 jobs in the provincial capital. The town hall of Callosa de Segura has announced the launch of a 40 hour language course for teaching German to young people. A press release states that among the 5,000 languages in the world, German is still one of the most important. So important in these times of deep crisis mainly for young people, having knowledge of German improves your chances of working in German companies both at home and in other parts of the world. The Cruz Roja of Guardamar visited 100 local schools this week, as part of the celebrations for International First Aid Day, recognised this year on the 14th of September, giving presentations on the importance of knowing basic, but crucial, life saving techniques. Preventing accidents and dealing with the immediacy of an incident were all presented to the children who joined in with a variety of practical exercises. The beach rescue service for Elche, DYA, dealt with more than 2,000 emergencies during the two summer months, some 600 fewer than last year, when the figure was 2,900. The most common assistance was for jellyfish stings with 1,928 people being treated, another 272 for a variety of injuries and 22 having suffered concussion. The teams also carried out 17 rescues, transferred 37 people to hospital by ambulance, and treated 21 for the effects of heat stroke. The busiest beach for the life guards was at Arenales del Sol, where 1,256 interactions were recorded.
The Mayor of Guardamar has faced criticism this week, after his own car was spotted parked in a pay-and-display parking zone at Guardamar, but without the mandatory parking fee having been paid. The implementation of the paid parking scheme has met with protest and controversy since it was launched, to which this incident will no doubt add to the embarrassment of the council team, although they did explain that the Mayor was inspecting the beach area of El Moncayo as they had received notices of a number of dead animals, especially fish, in the mouth of the Segura river. The PSOE opposition group in Jumilla has announced this week that not only has the PP Mayor lost the paramedic ambulance that serves the municipality, he has finally answered the question as to its whereabouts, with the simple answer, “I don´t know”. Acquired in 2007, the ambulance served some 800 emergencies per year on average, but since Enrique Jiménez took over as mayor, nobody had seen the 100,000 euro ambulance, prompting repeated questions from other groups, which they say had been met with “lies and deception”, until this latest admittance this week. Emergencies are still being dealt with however, as a private ambulance has been seen operating in its place. The mayor says he doesn’t know where the 100,000 euro ambulance is

REFLECTIONS ON SNOW WHITE. The Rojales Pantomime group suddenly found themselves without a venue to rehearse in this week. Due to unforeseen circumstances the Quesada Cultural Centre has had to cancel the auditorium whilst maintenance work is carried out. Fortunately for the Group, the bar and restaurant Reflections on urbanisation San Luis stepped in and offered the group a rehearsal space. The group hope to be back in Quesada next Tuesday (17th Sep). They also wish to thank Reflections for their generosity. The pantomime group send apologies to anybody who turned up at the culture centre to join their rehearsals. The group would still be interested in anybody who wishes to join the chorus for their next production, which is Snow White. Snow White promises to be the Fairest of all the pantos, with plenty of slapstick and toe tapping tunes. Come and take a bite of the apple, we can promise you definitely won’t fall asleep.

CONSTRUCTION WITHOUT CONSCIENCE - PAR T 1 Anyone driving around the urbanisations of Orihuela Costa will notice that a forest of cranes again peppers the skyline. It appears that the brakes have come off the construction industry and there is another mad scrabble to build on any piece of vacant land. Several major builders have large scale projects all intent on cramming as many housing units as possible onto the small plots of land. How many times has the Spanish building industry gone through these boom / bust cycles, especially here on the coast? In spite of have the huge number of bankrupt building sites with their degrading, over grown and half completed housing projects there seems to be another mad dash into trying to revive the local economy with fresh construction developments. There are reported to still be over a million unsold housing units in the Valencian Community resulting from the last crash of the housing sector. The last devastating collapse of the housing market not only resulted in sky high unemployment locally and in Spain in general but also was the major contributor to many banks failing and having to bailed out by the European Community. However, even through the present crisis is still not over, banks are clearly lending again to the housing sector here on the coast.
The uni-nature of industry predominant in many Spanish towns means that during recessions whole communities are left without work. The collapse of the building industry along the coast affected towns like Almoradi where there was a dependence on the furniture industry that had kept very busy the building boom. Any town that depended indirectly on the booming housing market suffered dreadful unemployment during the property crash. Any brain dead chimpanzee could predict that any economy that depends on unlimited sales of new homes is built on foundations of quick sand! One needs to question where are the unlimited supply of purchasers? However, this is not the most important question that should be asked. More importantly by far is the question what are the work aspirations of these house buyers? The economy of the Orihuela Costa is very limited. House building and construction suffers frequent and devastating collapses throwing huge numbers of workers out of work and on present evidence out of their homes too. Articles in the Spanish press indicates that large numbers of former construction workers and their families have been forced to return to their parental homes as they have used up all their unemployment entitlements. Further many immigrant workers have
Despite thousands of empty properties there seems to be another mad scrabble to build on any piece of vacant land
been forced to leave Spain due the lack of work. What is evident from any analysis of Orihuela Costa is that the Councillors based in Orihuela city have totally ignored the employment requirements of potential Costa residents. How can any planning authority approve unlimited construction of dwellings without due consideration to the economic needs of individuals who will inhabit these homes? Is it believed that these homes will just be used as holiday accommodation? Does the planning authority really believe
that there is unlimited money available to purchase expensive holiday homes, especially in time of recession? What we are witnessing is construction without a conscience. Sandpiper The population of Orihuela Costa need to ensure their voice is heard and the only way to achieve this is to ensure that residents are on the electoral register and make sure they vote in local elections.
ORIHUELA AND THE COSTA NEWS ROUNDUP The Orihuela Costa will be launching a survey to find out what bus users want from their public transport network, with the aim of improving the service within the current budget of 220,000 euro per year. The Tuesday bus to Orihuela for example is now under threat, as passenger numbers are barely existent, so the 1,000 euro per month spent on that link, which last week carried just one passenger, could well be put to better use elsewhere. The questionnaire will be available on the Orihuela town hall website and from the town hall, with all bus users asked to give their opinion for suggestions of improving the service.
The second mayor of Orihuela, Antonia Moreno, has announced that the registration period for financial assistance for parents of young students of Orihuela will open until October the 10th. A 12,000 euro budget has been approved for the assistance, with the hope of offering up to 300 euro for those familes who are struggling through the financial crisis, but the final amount per student cannot be determined until the number of approved applicants has been collated. Last year the families received 74 euro as their share towards sending their children to school in Orihuela. A contract valued at 146.100,24 euro has been awarded this week, which will see a private company carry out a detailed audit of energy consumption in the municipality of Orihuela, which will be completed in a period of not longer than 6 months. The aim is to look at all elements of energy and money saving measures, both in terms of renewing antiquated systems, looking at municipal buildings and seeing how much could be saved off the 5 million euro annual electricity bill that the municipality pays each year. The implementation of the energy audit should allow savings up to 20% in five years, which can be 50% within a decade. As part of the “Coastal Cleanup Campaign this year, in which volunteers are rewarded with a free portion of a giant paella for assisting in cleaning the beaches of the coast, the day has now been turned into an event that will see an multimedia cinematic information display inside a 360 degree projected spherical cinema, advice and information points on both the environment and energy, and an eco-market offering handmade and ecological goods and products. Volunteers still need to register to ensure enough food to go round, which can be done at the town hall, with social and community groups from inland areas already signing up to join their coastal neighbours in what will be a community driven exercise of information and assistance to benefit all.
Battery collection contr’s have been distributed around the area
Councillor for the coast of Orihuela, Martina Schreurer, has revealed that since taking the office responsible for the coast, her department has spent some 300,000 euro on improvements in the area. This expense covers such small items as replacing missing handrails, to larger projects such as beach access walkways and the purchasing of additional rubbish bins. The councillor intends to provide a detailed statement on the projects soon.
The Department of Environment has distributed battery collection containers in local primary schools around the area, in an initiative with the Ecopilas foundation who are responsible for both providing the containers, as well as collecting the batteries for recycling or disposal in a correct and environmentally friendly manner. The review period for which the claims for rights of closing the public walkway near the Bella Vista urbanisation has closed, with all claims having been rejected. The town hall planning department are now able to pursue the case to the next stage which they hope will ultimately recover the public land for use of the citizens of the municipality, albeit through a long drawn out legal process.

TRAIN CRASH JUDGE SUMMONS TRACK SAFETY MANAGERS
The Judge presiding over the investigation into the Santiago train crash in July, Luis Aláez, has called five people from track operators ADIF to testify in the case, as well as requesting information relating to the identities of those who were responsible for track safety on the line where 79 people lost their lives and more than a hundred were injured. In a report issued on Tuesday, the judge stated that, in view of the chart submitted by ADIF, it is possible to consider “reckless potential perpetrators of deadly and harmful results”, calling the Director of Traffic Safety, Manuel B.G., and the
Northwest Area Manager for Traffic Safety, Fernando R.S., who are required to attend court on September the 18th. In addition to those managers, the judge has also called for three others to attend on September the 19th, José Antonio G.D., the head of Area Inspections and Traffic Safety-Northwest, and two inspectors, Carlos A.G. and Roberto S.A. Although it is not unusual in such a high profile case for senior managers to be called to testify, the Judge is also requesting information as to the identity of all persons who have had positions of responsibility for rail safety, and at all levels of management.

CHILDREN AT GREATER RISK IN CARS Coinciding with this week´s crackdown on wearing seatbelts and child restraints in cars, the DGT traffic department have published some startling statistics about children in cars. According to the traffic experts, wearing a seatbelt in the front of a car reduces the risk to those involved in an accident by between 40% and 60%, whereas travelling in the back and wearing a seatbelt reduces the risk by up to 75%. So far this year 79 of the 643 people killed on the roads were not wearing a seat belt, bearing in mind that a proportion of the 643 overall death count will also include road users not in cars, such as pedestrians and motorcyclists. However, a child who is not properly restrained in a car is five times more likely to die in a crash than one who is correctly seated and belted in. That figure is then amplified when the DGT also state that 80% of all children travelling in cars are not properly and legally restrained. The campaign on seatbelt wearing will be running all this week, with many local police forces joiing the Guardia Civil in carrying out checks of vehicle users.

ITV CHECKS MOST EXPENSIVE IN VALENCIA Just about everybody in Spain has heard of the Inspección Técnica de Vehículos, or ITV, whether from simply seeing the signs and perhaps assuming associations with a UK television channel, or perhaps from actually having to take our vehicle for what is the equivalent to the MOT test in the UK. Those of us living near the borders of the Valencia and Murcia regions may also be aware of the price difference between the two areas, but what we might not know is just how much that difference actually is. The FACUA consumer association, which is the consumer association the national government have been trying to close down, has conducted a comparative survey in the seventeen autonomous communities, which has revealed that in Valencia, there is a difference of up to 144% for diesel powered passenger cars, and up to 208% in the cost of inspections for motorcycles and mopeds. The findings were revealed in a press conference, in which spokesperson Rubén Sánchez stated that the cost for a petrol or diesel car to be checked in Extremadura was 25.93 euro, whereas a diesel in Valencia would set the driver back 63.23 euro. The average increase to passenger cars up to 2012 is 2.6%, according to Sánchez, who added that at these rates, which are set be the individual regions, with the exception of Madrid where the service has been deregulated and liberalized, we must add the increases set by the central government. The group say that there are different management models for the service in Spain, which result in different rates and tariffs being put on the end user. Some municipalities apply IVA, whereas others do not, which leads to a fragmented service across the country, which could be better managed and fairer if it were structured in a better way.

TAKE THE FEAR OUT OF DENTISTRY WITH GERHARD NAGEL read on Facebook this week that a friend needed a visit to the dentist. The stress and worry that the possibility of the impending meeting raised comments like “my stomach is churning” and “wish me luck”, to which the considerate readers obviously replied. But, once the appointment was over, the work had been done, the “patient” had returned alive, well and free from the pain that had prompted the initial concern. Some of us may have had a bad experience in the past, but most of us simply fear the dentist as that is a more natural reaction that enjoying the treatment, although it is usually without justification. Modern dentistry has changed. Just ask anybody who has had work done recently. Ask if there was actually anything “real” to fear. The answer is invariably “no”. Modern dentist offer a warm and welcoming environment and with the most modern precision equipment, that as soon as you walk into a dentist´s office, you feel comfortable, welcome and your fears are eased.
I
The Gerhard Nagel clinic at La Zenia is one such place. Having been established on the Costa Blanca since 1997, and one of the first practices in the country to offer high quality cosmetic dentistry, the experience and knowledge of the team behind the surgery has grown since their initial opening, keeping up to date with the most modern practices and equipment, to ensure that they have always maintained the highest standards of dental care available, with the overall aim of looking after your oral wellbeing, whether it be cosmetic or restorative. Their expertise in building smiles changes lives; quite literally, as they use their artistic approach to fully assess every individual mouth, from every conceivable angle, to ensure that any work carried out fits your own facial features. Even a language barrier is not a problem, as the staff speak a host of languages, including English, Spanish and German, which has enabled them to build up a big international clientele. Isabel, will help you arrange an appointment. If anyone has an emergency, the staff will do their utmost to fit you in that same day. The clinic has its own laboratory, so work such as repairs to dentures or moulding of teeth, are done very quickly. They also have a panoramic Xray machine, which enables them to get a very accurate picture of your whole mouth. The clinic is used to dealing with holiday makers too, and will do fillings and bridges etc. at the drop of a hat. Specialist services, such as teeth whitening or cosmetic surgery, are also available. Children are welcome to come for check ups and pain free treatment. The clinic prides itself on prompt service. No more long waits for something you need now. However, with all of this said, with the reality of an open mind that tells us there is nothing to fear, even if you still have doubts, or if you have a phobia about visiting the dentist, Nagel’s
can, in special situations, bring in a qualified anaesthetist, who will knock you out completely, to enable the dentist to do the necessary work. When you come to, you will be ready to go home. The anaesthetist will remain present throughout the whole operation.
Booking is recommended, but not always necessary. The opening times are 9am to 3pm. Phone 966 73 0058 or 607 821 433.

ORIHUELA ROAD TO REOPEN IN TWO MONTHS Councillor for town planning in Orihuela, Antonio Zapata, has announced that railway infrastructure company ADIF, and the building firm Sacyr, plan to open the underpass at the Bigastro end of Orihuela within two months, returning the traffic flow to one of the main routes into and out of the city. Initially, they plan to open a single lane in each direction, which had previously been impossible due to “technical reasons”, as ADIF-Sacyr failed to comply in part with expectations, said Zapata. “ With the reopening of the middle of Following the death of former Los Montesinos based Carls Bar owner 'Shimmy', local poet John Stevens has penned a poem in his memory. As you may well be aware, Carls Bar held a Christmas Party this summer in aid of the Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association (AFA) raising 300 euros. Shimmy died suddenly, soon after retiring from Carls Bar, as did former customer Alistair Watt. Carls Bar is now in the hands of the 'Mad Chef' Martin and Tricia. the underpass and one lane in each direction, it will resolve, in part, the traffic problems created by the railway works”, he continued, explaining that the other two lanes will have to remain closed to allow the work to complete. “ADIF and Sacyr have understood the demands of the City Council to improve the mobility of Orihuela”, continued Zapata, before stating that technicians working on site insist that at the beginning of 2015 they will be “completely in compliance with established timetable for implementation”. The staff organized so much fun And plenty of games to be won With food supplied by the 'Mad Chef' I like to call him the 'food ref' With food and drink piled up so high A Christmas Party? INCORRECT PARKING SIGNS TO FACE SANCTIONS IOnce a sufficient timeframe for renewing the Vado Permanete licenses across the Orihuela municipality has expired, those home owners who have not updated their signs to the latest version, and those who carry fake or erroneous signs, will face sanctions from the town hall. This has proven a success already, with 1,300 already collected, although there are still a number of signs, some
300, still to be assigned, and a potentially greater number of old signs incorrectly displayed. The councillor explained that the license can cost between 90 and 150 euro per year, as the streets are divided into different categories. Whenever a vehicle crosses the pavement to access a garage or parking place, the Vado Permanete is required. It is necessary that those who have a license are abreast of their payments under current regulations”, he concluded.

GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT!
Unlucky for some? Maybe, but one famous singer will be celebrating his good fortune on Friday the 13th, as Randy Jones, perhaps more commonly known as The Cowboy from the Village People, celebrated his 61st birthday. That news is on top of the fiesta he´s been enjoying after marrying his partner of three decades, Will Gregga. But The Cowboy is probably not the only one in the village in party spirits, as Victor Willis, aka The Cop, who happened to write most of their hits, including the global phenomenon that is YMCA, which is featured in the latest fun packed film, Despicable Me 2, as well as Go West and In The Navy, will be able to enjoy the results of a 1978 copyright law which gives “termination rights” after a period of 35 years, meaning that the creator of the works of art will once again hold the rights to those iconic songs. Hopefully that party celebration will be more civilised than some from the past with Willis having a string of troubles, rehab and recovery, and even an appearance on America´s Most Wanted on an assault charge. Willis, incidentally, is the first prominent artist to claim the rights under the legislation, but no doubt not the last, as many a 70´s performer zips up their boots and goes back to their roots... YEAH! Although that was 1981.
ENROLMENT FOR THEATRE WORKSHOP UNDERWAY Enrolment got underway last Thursday for the Municipal Theatre Workshop following a contribution from the Orihuela Department of Culture of 13,000 euros. NAKED MUMS WIN BOOTY
A group of women from Montserrat in Valencia, who last year raised money to subsidise their children´s school bus by posing naked in a calendar, have yet another reason to celebrate this week. Spokesperson for the group of mothers, Silvia Lucas, confirmed this week that they have now won 25,000 euro by taking part in a television game show. Silvia continued to say that they haven´t stopped campaigning and fundraising yet, but they are planning further industrial action to demand that the Department of Education bring solution to the lack of public transportation for their children, but the women have ruled out a return to nudity. The problems arose when new rules withdrew free transport for children living within a 3 kilometre radius of the school, but as many of these students live on various developments, the topography means that many of them live 6 kilometres away, due to the roads traversing the topography, but their homes still fall within the 3 kilometre boundary. With 25,000 euro from the game show, and hopes to raise funds through the Christmas lottery, this group of mothers hopes to pay for transport throughout the entire academic course.
GREASE, THE MUSICAL, COMING TO TORREVIEJA Councillor for Culture, Luis María Pizana, together with producer, Gonzalo Perez, and the two main stars, Javier Arroyo and Martha Arteta, attended a press conference earlier in the week to announce details of the seven forthcoming performances of the musical Grease at the Torrevieja’s Teatro Municipal. The Musical is a spectacular new production, featuring ambitious new staging which has been created for the 40th anniversary of the Broadway premiere. The producers have also included eight new musical numbers that were left out of the film despite appearing in the script of the original musical. The production will last a little over two hours during which time it will feature on stage 40 artists, singers, dancers and musicians. In all six trailers will be required to transport the material necessary for the production which will include large high resolution screens, 70 moving lights, a multitude of special effects, costumes and scenery along with a team of over 100 production staff and performers. But none of it will come cheap with the tickets for the musical priced at between 45 and 49 euros taking place from Thursday 17 to Sunday 20 October. Details of the performances are: Thursday October 17, 20:30 pm, Friday18 October, 18:00 and 21:30 hours, Saturday October 19, 18:00 and 21:00, Sunday October 20, 17:00 to 20:30. Later in the month, on 26 October, the company Opera 2001 will be performing La Traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, at the same venue. The performance will begin at 8pm with seats costing from 25 to 35 euros. The production will consist of 45 singers supported by a 45 piece orchestra. One new innovation will be a screen above the stage offering simultaneous subtitles of the storyline. Director Luis Miguel Lainz said that he expects the 700 seat theatre to be a complete out. Opera 2001 are regular visitors to Torrevieja having last visited the city during the spring when they presented Nabucco. They are the leading opera production company in Spain with audiences of more than half million people in their 20 year history.

ROCKETS’S GOLF SOCIETY VISTABELLA GOLF – 10th SEPTEMBER 2013 It was back to our “Home” course and as we have come to expect it was in really good conditiuon despite the fact that the greens had been recently tined and it had suffered from heavy raqin the week before. 24 members and guests played in this Stableford individual competition and there had been players practicing or playing more frequently as 30+ points were the norm. Our ‘Arfur’ must be on something as this is the second competition that he has excelled, we also saw him giggling at the “Keep off the Grass” sign. Five of the top scorers came in with 30 or more points and ‘Arfur’ being the highest with 39 points and a massive cut and that may also mean his other enhancing activities!! Arfur gave all the credit to his Garmin GPS watch as shown in the picture. He also got cut by 1.2 shots and Ron scratched his head when calculating how many it should be! Gold Category: 1st Merv Williams 34, 2nd Malcolm Anderson 30, 3rd Liam Folley 29, 4th Ivie Davies 28 Silver Category: 1st Arthur Williams 39, 2nd Ron Chambers 36, 3rd Mick Hithersay 33, 4th Ron Nicholson 25 Nearest The Pin: Hole 4: Malcolm Anderson: Hole 8: Ken Lindsay: Hole 15: Ron Chambers Longest Drive: Tony Harrison Best Guest: Tony Harrison All the players went back to Izzy’s Bar for our favourite munchies, and Roxy’s Izzy Chips, all followed by “Rocket” Ron presenting the prizes, as always a bloomin’ good turnout for both the Izzy chips and golf. Many thanks as always to Tony, Jackie and Roxy. It is the start of the Vega Baja Premier Golf League on Friday 20th September at Altorreal Golf, Molinas de Segura – Rockets are playing La Manga North from the 10th Tee at 10:32 The next “away” game is at Alicante Golf - 24th September with a first Tee of 09:30 but get there early, as there is a “Breakfast” included, this will be the Ray Battiste Memorial Trophy. Paddy's Point Golf Society "Chairman's Putter"
This was our first visit to Villamartin this year, the course was in reasonable condition apart from the temporary green on the 18th hole which can only be described as a joke. The game was sponsored by Pete Hutchinson and James Toft so we were playing for the Tofthutch trophy. Our thanks go to Pete for the lovely trophies that were up for grabs; unfortunately I was not one of the lucky winners. Our format for the day was a Texas scramble which was enjoyed by all. I would like to welcome our newest member to the society Trevor Hayman I hope you enjoyed your day. Results were as follows: Nearest the pins: hole 6 bill England, hole 9 Louvain smith, hole 13 Trevor Hayman, hole 17 Vic Smith. The winning team with 47 points was Barry Thorogood, Bill England, Trevor Hayman, and Colin Hicks. Well done to all. Our next game is at the beautiful Alicante course where you are assured of a warm welcome. 36 players travelled to Las Colinas in trepidation due to the forcast of storms in the area but they did not materialise and we played in wonderful sunshine throughout. In fact the wonderful weather caught some players out (including the author) as they forgot their sunscreen and ended up with very red heads. Unfortunately Las Colinas had done maintainance work on the greens the previous week but looking through the majority of the scores it didn't trouble the majority of players, maybe just me! After golf we returned to Paddy's Point for the presentation after a hearty meal provided by Hazel and her staff, many thanks to all who worked hard for a great day out. NTP 5 - Pierce Kelly, NTP 7 - Joe Adam (just missing out on a hole in one.), NTP 10 - Elsie Cowie, NTP 14 - Baz Mordle, NTP 17 - Davy McBride. The 2s pot was shared by Joe Adam, Bill Gladman and Colm McLoughlin. Longest drive - Paul McCormack, Best Guest - Colm McLoughlin. 1st - Peter Riley - 39 points, 2nd - Joe Adam - 38 points, 3rd - Rory Lee - 36 points Future events: Wednesday 9th October @ Riquelme for the "Seve Trophy. Saturday 20th October @ Font de Lop, Chairman's v Captain's challenge match. LA ZENIA GS By Eric Lewis A very good turn out at Saurines de la Torre on Thursday, played in some very good golfing weather. A bit of sun and a gentle breeze, to cool us down. Saurines was again looking in great shape, except the green could have do with a little cut. Needed that little bit extra with the putter, as if you were playing on winter greens. On form Mo Flint won the day with a score of 41pt's and no blobs. A mention for Nigel Cotton who as been struggling over the months but came with 37pt's on count back. No wonder the handicap secretary was looking happy the axe was out to reduce their handicap's. We retuned back to Gogarty's for the presentations. Thanks to James and his staff, once again for their service and great buffet. Results of the day : Winner Mo Flint, n/t/p's No 6 Jack Todd, not to be out done No 18 dad Mark Todd, Three winners of the two's pot Mark Todd, Stuart White, and Barry O'Finney, the last two being new members. BUSTERS GOLF SOCIETY By Barry Grinsell On Friday 6th September we played our monthly stable ford at Alicante golf course , what a pleasure it was to play on this Seve designed course again , the staff were as usual pleasant and courteous , and congratulations to the greens staff for keeping this course in tip top condition , the greens were receptive and care was required when reading the contours which made the putting very tricky if you were the wrong side of the pin . Our first tee off time was 10:40 preceded by breakfast which was part of the offer being given by the club , 22 players teed off on time which is the norm for Alicante , the strong prevailing winds , which always seemed to be against us didn’t help our scores with 35 points being the best score of the day , however one of our players , Chris Ives managed to get the societies first eagle since we formed Busters some eighteen months ago , this was achieved on the par 5 fourth hole well done Chris , one of our players said he had had an eagle but we had to advise him that eagles on the Mini Golf novelty putting course don’t count , the results for this months competition were nearest the pins , on hole three Dave pretty hole six Barry Grinsell holes eight and twelve Alan Gifford no NTP on hole fifteen and on hole seventeen Neil Metcalf each NTP received a sleeve of three Callaway golf balls , in third place with a score of thirty one points was Chris Ives runner up with thirty four points was Bill Fantom and our winner on the day with thirty five points was Dave Pretty , our winners all received cash prizes , the football card this week was won by Chris Soane . After the game we all returned to the Mini Golf bar for our presentation and snacks which were provided by the bar , this was the second visit this week to the bar for most of us as we had our six monthly social outing there on Wednesday , congratulations are in order for the first class meal we received there also the excellent organisation of the night goes to Colin Edwards who along with the staff made it all happen , many thanks to all concerned . Next month see’s us playing at Alto Real , an old favourite of ours .

HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY A much improved La Serena hosted the visiting Hub golf society. The course, previously devoid of routine maintenance a couple of years ago is now being returned to its former glory. Ongoing work on the greens is now paying off handsomely as is the extensive attention to detail on fairways and paths. 2014 should see the course back to its best and on many societies must play list. A two person yellow ball competition took the place of the usual G.P. event, which now has only two rounds to play with five players in contention for top spot. 3 teams lost the yellow ball on only the second hole, one of them still managing to make the top three John Eyre and Paul Durrant. An eagerly anticipated draw to determine teams was conducted, with many crossing fingers in the hope of drawing the form man Declan O´Dea. The Hub´s captain Simon Williams must have crossed everything as he was the lucky man. As expected O´Dea playing off a valid but in my eyes a dodgy 10 (he gave up the game for 6 years and only recently restarted) used the double scoring yellow ball to his team´s advantage on the first 9, a couple of 6 points and an 8 point birdie on the par 5, 7th gave the boys a 47 point front 9. The back 9 wasn’t quite as memorable as Williams lost the yellow on the 14th, however they still amassed a creditable 42 points for an 89 point total. This gave them a 22 point cushion over the Smiths, Anthony and

SMGS VISIT VILLAMARTIN GOLF COURSE
The Villamartin course, which is one of the favourites with our members, had just had its late summer session of hollow-tining so all eighteen pin positions were very accessible on the front few feet of each green. In fact the 18th had a temporary green which, for the big hitters, if the corner was cut at the correct angle was reachable from the tee. I’m hardly a big hitter yet I was left with no more than a 30 mtr flick onto the green and a couple of putts to record my SIX with the second ball……yes, it was one of those days! Add to these pin placements the fact that most of the yellow blocks were further forward than normal and the suspicions of rather a highscoring day become forefront in your mind! Those suspicions are fully confirmed when several hours later you discover that NOT ONE of the dozen prize-winners carded less than 36 points ….. including quite a few obscene totals in the forties!!
NTP’s were claimed by Ray Harris, Colin Miles, Phil de Lacy & Geoff Giddey. The three top visitors were 3rd Roger Webb (38 C/B), 2nd Arthur O’Rourke (38 C/B) and top slot for the second week running was the lovely Amy Fleet who can look forward to her second cut in as many weeks after her tally of 39 points (There’s not many of us that can shoot 3 times our age! (Maybe some of us could on a bad medal day – but definitely not in Stableford!) The big field on the day justified three divisions with the winners in the bronze category being Norman McBribe in 3rd (36). John Parker in 2nd (42) and an unbelievable 47 points from bronze winner, Mick Roscoe, ensures Barry’s scalpel is going to need re-sharpening after this week. The silver category saw all three top scores in the 40’s with 3rd place going to Norman Padmore (40), 2nd to Ray Harris (41) and 1st to Capt Steve Davis with a very healthy 43 !! Gold division’s scores were a little more down-to-earth with Stevie Fleet in 3rd only managing 2 less than his daughter (37 C/B), Ken Flaherty took 2nd (37 C/B) leaving Graham Cockayne in 1st with his 38. All in all a tremendous day’s scoring, congratulations to all the prize-winners. Don’t forget to keep tuned in to all society matters by visiting www.smgs.org or simply give Baz a buzz on 966 731 033 to find out about the venues for our forthcoming Wednesday meetings at which visitors are always made very welcome.
HAPPY DAYS CATRAL GS
HAPPY DAYS GS
A good week with 22 members turning up. We played at Alenda and the course was once again superb, with fairways and greens in excellent condition. It`s always a pleasure to play this course, well done to the Caddymaster and his staff. We played our usual stapleford format, with some very good scores coming in. Our handicap secretary came in with an impressive 41points, which will make him a single figure golfer. Well done John! Guest player Tom Burrage playing off 5 showed us our to hit a golf ball, with the longest drive and nearest the pin holes well done Tom. The weather took its toll on a few of us on the latter holes, but a great day out regardless. The results on the day were: Winner John Lees, 41 Pts, Winner Front Nine Jim Wise 19pts, Winner back nine Charlie Forest 19pts Nearest the Pins Winners: Hole, 3 Jim Wise. Hole, 5 Tom Burrage. Hole, 13 Jim Wise. Hole, 16 TomBurrage. Longest Drive, Hole 9 Tom Burrage. Nearest the Pin, Second Shot Steve Ashurst. A happy band of 22 players (small for us) arrived at Peraleja, (one of the most friendly and helpful of clubs) for our pairs better ball comps, although one of our players didn't realise it was a pairs comp until the presentation after the match!!! The course is still improving, although the bunkers still need some attention. The results as follows. 1st. Roddy Bruce / Ken Farrow (42) 2nd. Kedrick Rhodes / Dave Naylor (41) 3rd. Steve Naish /Dave Eadington (41) 4th. Ronnie Mac / Billy Wilson (38) . N.T.Ps 2nd. Dave Naylor. 7th.Kevin Wenn. 9/16. Steve (Iron Man) Naish. 12th Kedric Rhodes. We had 2 Twos, Bob (the Dambuster) Oliver, and Steve (Ironman) Naish. It has to be said that Steve needed a wine box to carry all his prizes home, is a CUT on the way ?? What a great day out, we returned to Marinasol Bar/Restaurant (Cabo Roig) for our presentation where we were given copious amounts of sandwiches and some very tasty herby roast potatoes, thanks to Chef NigelCawthra, thanks also to Maz and her lovely ladies for looking after us so well (as always). Plenty of anticipation now for our 3-4 day trip to Benidorm, 23rd to 26th sept, lots of our members (who are not on tour) will be joining us on 25th sep, at Bonalba golf for the day. It should be fun. Thank you must go to Kevin Wenn for organising this trip, can't wait for B, day. Until then "Happy golfing". Robin (the Scribe) Adams.

POSTCARD FROM IBIZA As most local golf courses are recovering from recent hollow tining I have taken the opportunity to take a short holiday on the beautiful island of Ibiza which is just a 35 minute flight from Alicante. I made the decision to go to the only resort I know which is St Antonio and what a mistake that has been with most people being under the age of 25 walking around drunk and half naked and deciding to party under my hotel window every night until 7am after which the street cleaners move in at 7.30am and I have forgoten what sleep actually is. Trust me if you visit this island stay at Sant Euraria on the opposite coast which I absolutely beautiful and peaceful. While here i have conducted some golfing business which is difficult because there is only one golf resort on the island with a 6000 metre 18 hole course and a shorter 9 hole course. Both courses look beautiful and put me in mind of Las Ramblas (but greener) but the price is a staggering 90 euros to walk and 40 euros for a buggy so the next time you are asked to pay 36 euros to play La Peraleja.including buggy but with a few dodgy fairways think on because prices could be worse! We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number, below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. EUROGOLF, LA MARQUESA
A quiet start to the season with 37 members taking part in what was the first medal of the season on 12 September 2013 at our home course of La Marquesa Golf Course. Conditions were good, although the greens were still a bit woolly from being dressed last week. Low numbers are partly due to members still not returned from summer vacation and some of our older members opted to take advantage of the spare tee times and play a Stableford game instead. Our clubhouse is under new management and hopefully will be up and running for next week’s games. Thanks to Stevie’s Bar for their hospitality. T.M. GOLF SOCIETY - LA FINCA G.C.
Today, 40 members and guests enjoyed the delights of La Finca golf course and although there was a threat of rain, we were lucky in that it held back, but the humidity was of a high volume; however this isn’t a report about the weather but of the golf. It is fair to say that some of the greens were true and others not so much, but it was the same for everyone and 1 guest, John “Ozzy” Osborne came home with 37 points to claim the top spot and the Best Guest prize of the day. The Silver Division was a strange affair with 31 points enough for 1st through to 4th places and the winner on countback was Ray Cadman, pushing Ray Ewins into 2nd place and Ernie Wilson 3rd. The Gold boys faired a bit better and it took 35 points for Brian Staines to claim 3rd spot, one point behind John Eyre and the winner,
Captain Mick Kennedy both on 36 points. All four NTP’s were won by Jim Fleming, Chris Oatley, Ernie Wilson and Arne Hansen. FAIRWAYZ GOLF SOCIETY. 26 players from Fairwayz golf society turned out for a day at Alicante Golf course on Thursday 12th September. The prize money went to Colin Pepperday. Some score cards handed in were quite respectable considering the challenge that the Alicante course presents. The results of the prize winners were as follows:Gold Category. 1st - Peter Jones 33pts. 2nd - Steve Ashurst 32pts. Best front 9 - Steve Lawrence 17pts. Best back 9 - Geoff Branton 17pts. LAS RAMBLAS G.S.
CLARKES BAR G.S.
By Doug Wright It was back to Vistabella on Monday as the greens were still closed at Las Ramblas. We again enjoyed the course and it took a guest, Danny who is Brian Dent's son-in-law, to show us the way with a good score of 34 pts. playing off 6. The prize winners were; 1. Danny ? 34 pts, 2. John Collins (31 pts), 3. Mike Mahony 31 pts, 4. Mike Chapman 27 pts. Back at Las Ramblas on Wednesday we played a Stableford. The newly reopened greens were somewhat bumpy and slow, so no one beat par. The results were as follows: Cat1. 1. Phil Herrington 34 pts, 2. Steve Baker (Guest) 32 pts, 3. Peter Perry (Guest) 32 pts. Cat2. 1. Barry Holtham 34 pts, 2. Ken Meridith 31 pts, 3. John Robertson 31 pts. I did not play on Friday, so I am not sure of the team game format. However I do know that it was won with a score of 86 pts. by the team of Geoff Biggerstaff, Rod Doel, Ken Meridith & Peter Perry (guest).
This week we played our weekly stableford competition at Vistabella golf club on a warm and, at first, still day making for good scoring conditions. The greens had recovered well from the hollow tining although they were a little firm and slower than normal which caught 1 or 2 players out at first, the fairways were in their usual excellent condition. The results on the day were: Nearest the pin on hole 4 and hole 10 in 2 was Tommy Clarke Nearest the pin on hole 8 was John Porter Longest Drive on hole 18 was Dave Adams who was over the moon as he had never won longest drive before. Winner with 41 points was Charlie Rodgers and a visit from the handicap axeman Runner up with 36 points (on count back better back 9) was John Porter who just beat Tommy Clarke. Next week we have the last in our eclectic series at La Serena. Meet at the bar at 08:00.

LEADER
GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB By Steve Hibberd Greenlands Bowls Club recently held their twice annual open trips tournament, sponsored by S p o r t i n g Arbitrage and The Leader Newspaper. Played in perfect weather conditions, some top class bowling was on view. Thirty two teams each played 7 games over 3 days, with the winners of the 4 groups qualifying for the semi final stage. On rink 2, Eve Blythe, Lisa & Pete Bonsor, beat Kath Reid, Mel Hughes & Guiseppi G, whilst on rink 3, Graham Norris, Wendy & Barry Latham, beat William Holtham, Graham Phillips & Jason P. The final on rink 4, was won by Pete Bonsor's team, leaving Barry's La Marina based side having to settle for the runners up spot. Social sec Jill Collins has arranged a pre season fun day at Hotel Costa Blanca Resort, Quesada. Tickets are still available for the function on Tues 17 Sep at 4pm. There's entertainment by Woody, crazy golf, use of the swimming pool, plus a succulent 3 course meal and drink, all for only 14.50 euros.
On Fri 20 Sep, 10 for 1030, there will be an open forum at GBC, followed by team selection meetings. At 1130 the 3 SABA league teams elect their captain, vice & selector, followed by the 3 Southern league teams at midday, then it's the Winter league's turn at 1230. Unfortunately rain stopped play during Saturdays bottle club meeting, with only 6 ends being bowled, leaving 30+ bowlers disappointed but grateful for the abandonment, as the wet stuff lasted all day! So, there was this little old man who boarded the bus with a bowling wood in each of his front pockets. He sits down next to a beautiful young lady, and she can't help but glance quizzically at the man and his bulging pockets. It's an uneasy few minutes before finally, the little old man can take no more. "Bowling balls", he nods reassuringly. The lady seems a little shocked, and stares on. Moments later, she says, "Does it hurt as much as tennis elbow?". The top pic, by Carl Eagle, shows Winners Pete and Lisa Bonsor with Eve Blythe pictured sitting in the splendid, new stand at Greenlands Bowls Club after winning the Triples Competition held there last week. Runners Up Graham Norris, Wendy Latham & Barry Latham are shown in the bottom photo..
VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel Once again Vistabella have had one of those weeks we will try to remember for some time. Last weekend we completed all our internal summer competitions which are sponsored by Jennifer Cunningham and following some closely contested games we congratulate all the winners Richard Lee won the Men’s Singles competition which is played in the Sets format as is the Ladies Singles which was won by Gail Watson. Winners of the Australian Pairs were Les Barber and Andy Leggatt this was played on Saturday morning in the pouring rain and next year we are considering renaming it as the Platypus Duck Pairs. Martin Foulcer, Andy Leggatt and Jenny Bowman triumphed in the 3 -2 1 tournament. Thanks go once again to Peter Wright for his great work in organising these competitions and making sure that everyone knows when they need to turn up. Things were a bit calmer for the rest of the week but on Friday 13th Lucky for some, our Four Wood Pairs team headed by Ian Kenyon opened up the SABA Finals Weekend by whitewashing the much
fancied team from Quesada. Ian’s Team had won
Division 1 and faced Pete Bonsor’s Quesada team who won Division 2 no one would have predicted the end result which was a win on all three rinks for Vistabella, Martin Foulcer and Pat Rafferty won 18 – 13, Ian Kenyon and Fred Willshire won 16 – 13 and Les Barber and Arthur Brown won 15 – 14. As we said some weeks ago who says Vistabella can’t win major competitions. We have a number of our other members playing in the SABA Finals over this weekend so let’s hope for another upbeat report next week.
QUESADA 3 WOOD DRAWN PAIRS By Peta Rhodes On the 4th, 5th and 6th of September, an internal competition was held at Quesada Bowling Club. The Competition was a complete success, and everyone had fun and enjoyed it. It was a 3 wood drawn pairs and there were some surprising teams that came through to the quarter-finals. The quarter-finalists were Fred Roberts and Mike Lamberton, Ronnie Cairns and Ruth Bitch, Barry Armstrong and Brian Trinder, and John Northend And Kevin Mckenna. Both games were very close and held the crowds attention to the very last wood. The finalist were Fred and Mike, against Ronnie and Ruth. Fred and Mike had a good start, and kept Ronnie and Ruth at bay, but they got a good lead and did not let Ronnie and Ruth overtake them. So Fred and Mike were over the moon, as Fred was a sub for Harry Rhodes, who unfortunatly had to pull out at the last moment, and Mike who is 82 years old can still show the youngsters that there's life in the old dog yet. I must just say that I was really impressed with an virtually unknown bowler, as he bowled consistently well through out the comp, and that was Kevin Mckenna. Well done Kevin, I want to see more of you.

OBELE MISSES PROVE COSTLY FOR TORRY MURO CF..........................3 FC TORREVIEJA......1
Some confusion regarding kick off time but having arrived an hour early we were hoping that a run of 4 straight defeats against Muro could be overturned in the glorious late afternoon sun. Indeed the sunshine helped to draw a decent crowd which saw Torry make just one change from the side that took maximum points on Monday against Torre Levante, Carrasco replaced in midfield by Burguillos.. But it was the Torry fans that enjoyed the best of their sides opening exchanges as Obele should have opened the scoring for the visitors in the 2nd minute of the game. Played through by Dani Lucas the Cameroon forward hit his shot straight at the keeper when it would have been easier to score. The same player again went close 5 minutes later when a shot from close range shaved the outside of the post. As the home side got into the game they too made early chances the best of which brought a brave save from Carrion at the feet of Muro striker Pablo. A 3rd opportunity fell to Obele on the half hour when a cross from wide saw him again miss the target. As both sides played attractive football a mix up in the Torry defence just prior to the half time interval let in Raul who made no mistake from an acute angle so the visitors went into the break, rather unjustly, a goal behind. Things failed to get and better in the 2nd period for Torry who, after a decent performance by the defence, started to look hesitant at the back in the wake of a number of good Muro attacks, from one of which, ten minutes into the half, Muro extended their lead despite a late diving tackle from Vicente. As Obele continued to miss chances Muro
extended their lead on the hour mark through Mario when the substitute latched onto a Carrion save and although substitute Pastor pulled one back for the visitors in the final minutes of the game Torry could make no further impression on their hosts. Next Sunday Torry at home to CD Utiel in a 6pm kick off. FC TORREVIEJA - 1 CF TORRE LEVANTE - 0 Unbeaten Torry left it late to dispense with div 3 new boys Torre Levante, in this rearranged fixture. In front of a very poor crowd, this lack lustre match had a draw written all over it, until centre back Rafa headed home from a corner deep into stoppage time. Torry just about deserved their first victory of the new campaign, but a lack of goal scoring opportunities must be a concern for manager Anselmo, who now has to find a replacement for striker Eric, recently signed by rivals La Nucia. Torre Levante almost took the lead on 12 mins, but the woodwork came to Torry's rescue following a fierce long range drive. Shortly afterwards, Torry keeper Carrion came off his line and spread himself well to block a goal bound shot. He then repeated the feat on 21 mins, as the visitors took control of the match. Alberto shot wide on 29 mins, but Torry never really got going in a mediocre half, which passed by without much really happening. Although Burguillos, Pastor and Gasch were brought on for the 2nd half, Torry couldn't quite find a formula to unlock the visitors defence. Obele came closest to breaking the deadlock for Torry, but his firm header sailed over the bar. Carrion performed well, pulling off a quality save, then watched as a shot across his goal narrowly missed the target. But it was left to Rafa to achieve hero status, as he was mobbed by relieved team mates following his dramatic match winning goal.

ELCHE’S BIG NIGHT OUT! Tonight at 8pm Elche are home to old
BY JOHN adversaries Valladolid from Castile and MCGREGOR Lyon region. After Elche beating the visitors in the semi-finals of the play-offs two years ago (subsequently losing on away goals to Granada in the final) Valladolid were themselves promoted the following year, and now the two meet in La Liga. The guests are one point ahead of Elche with three from three games, courtesy of their one win against Getafe, but with two losses, the Illicitanos have two points from two draws and one loss. It has been a busy and sometimes frustrating close season for Elche, trying to attract the necessary class and experience to the City of Palms, to try and ensure the Franjiverdes stay in La Liga after 24 years away in Spain’s Second Division. It would appear with the ten new signings there is decent cover in all key positions now, and it is hoped that team spirit and close understandings are being practised while the useful International break has been here. On that subject Elche now have international players on their books, all from different countries: Richmond Boakye from Ghana, Columbian Carlos ‘The Rock’ Sanchez, Miroslav Stevanovic from Bosnia, Panamanian Jairo Jimenez and now Carles Gil on his second year’s loan from Valencia has played for Spain’s under 21 team. This experience can only be good for Elche, although not all can expect to be in Elche’s expected line up tonight. In goal last year’s stalwart Manu Herrera should start, with the big solid pairing in front of him of David Lomban and Alberto Botia, plus Edu Albacar at left back. Following a mammoth seven-match suspension incurred against Barcelona ‘B’ on May 10th, the Argentinian Damian Suarez is at last available again to contest right back with the new Romanian Christian Sapunaru, and the four man midfield is expected as Ruben Perez, Carles Gil, Carlos Sanchez and Chavez Fidel, with Boakye and Ferran Corominas (Coro) upfront This gives vast potential from the bench to give sound Elche coach Fran Escriba more options should he need them. The scene is set perfectly for Elche to achieve their first win in La Liga, which would put the Illicitanos into mid-table respectability. In two week’s time on Wednesday 25th September mighty Real Madrid come to town, with normal entrance prices already hiked to well over €100. With Gareth Bale, Christiano Ronaldo and all on show it would be nice to have some points already, to prove Elche can play, and survive in La Liga. Mucho Elche!
JAVI SPOT ON FOR REDS THE EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE The Euronics Darts League 2013-14 campaign gets under way this week albeit with a few changes. Three new teams Que Pasa (Villamartin), The Tavern (Villamartin) and the Porterhouse (Rioja Centre) have entered this season´s foray. Out of the three, Ray Sanderson´s Porterhouse have the best chance of a top five finish, having formed a new team after leaving PB´s Pirates. Some new signings and just narrowly missing out on winning the Hattons League Plate will have given his side a taste for success. An
excellent draw in the league against previous winners the Meerkats, was a realisation that silverware might be just around the corner. Ironically their first match is against fellow newcomers Que Pasa. Owner Brett Badlove really means business, his newly refurbished bar and brand new dart throw, which I must say is one of the best in the league, will entertain many an arrow thrower into the early hours. The third addition to the league is the Tavern, situated two doors away from the Hub´s Meerkats and Hyenas. Being in such close proximity it was inevitable captains Sean Farrell and Derek Kingsbury would arrange a pre-season friendly. The Hub hosted the match which was a first for the newly formed Tavern side. The outcome, a win for the Kats, with the Tavern not too far behind and far from disgraced. The Taverners have also gone to the expense of a new throw in their expansive bar, emulating their close neighbours. Whats new in the league? Well first, Hub proprietor Simon Williams has generously supplied new shirts for both his sides. Red for the Hyenas and black for

the Meerkats. The eye catching designs were created by new signing for the Kats Patrick Abrams who just happens to enjoy graphic design in his spare time as an IT expert. Pretty good they are too. Secondly for the first time in the league´s history, the Rendezvous Bar will not be competing for spoils. Former winners and runners up on at least four occasions, the Bulls will be a glaring omission. Last season´s champions Gogarty´s have splintered their side this term with a number of players opting out to play elsewhere, but with Gail Todd taking over the reins from Bill Warburton, the Gophers will be hoping to reproduce some of the form that took them to the narrowest of victories over the Bulls. League sponsor Debbie Wright (formerly Mackleston) joins new husband Dave down at the delights of the Pint Depot, not however in the same side I might add. The Sleaths have done the same, Cheryl joining Debbie in the Queens and Ian joining Dave in the Kings. Wonder who will be wearing long faces after their match on the second week of the season. Exite Radio will continue to cover the Euronics League on Saturday afternoons between 3 and 4 pm with Kevin Reardon finding out all the latest gossip from league chairman Paul Durrant. The programme will feature performances of the week from all matches to include teams and individuals not forgetting news from the professional circuit. Exite Radio 89.2FM or 93.1FM.
After their convincing 5-0 victory last weekend at home to Mutxamel, UD Horadada turned in another first class performance on Sunday morning when they took all three points in an entertaining 2-0 win against local rivals Santa Pola. Abraham and Javi Luis got the goals with the 2nd coming from the penalty spot. Benidorm remain the only team in Preferente with maximum points after the first 3 games. Next Sunday Horadada entertain Aspe at the Ikomar Stadium.
