UP TO 85% OF SPANISH AIRPORTS LOSING MONEY

AENA have registered a decline of 4.6% in the number of passengers travelling through their airports in the first six months of the year, with 70.14 million passengers. The reduction has produced an accumulated debt of 166 million euros. We all know the story of Castell贸n airport which is currently costing 3,600 euros a

day to keep closed. It was reported last week that last week that the company currently running the site with no aircraft, Aerocas, spent 368,865 euros in 2011 on personnel costs , despite having just seven employees. In addition they also spent more than 5 million euros on advertising, promotion and public relations. So how many more similar cases are there amongst the fifty-two airports in Spain especially as there are more than 20 major towns or cities that have two, sometimes even three airports within a comfortable sixty minute drive

To put this into some sort of perspective, Spain is the European country with the most airports per head of population. With its 46 million people, 17 autonomous communities divided into 50 provinces, without counting Ceuta or Melilla, Spain has fifty-two airports. Germany, with almost twice the population, 81 million people, has just 19. A report written by the Foundation for Applied Economic Studies ( Fedea ) based on public data, states that only eight of the fortyseven airports managed by Continued on Page 2

AENA are profitable : Fuerteventura, Alicante , Ibiza , Palma de Mallorca, Seville, Valencia , Lanzarote and Malaga, with the airports in Palma , Ibiza and Menorca , the most popular tourist destinations in Spain, accounting for the largest number of July passengers in Julytheir history. The Madrid- Barajas airport with 545 daily flights and 26.7 million passengers between January and July, was the sixth busiest in Europe in the number flights. In the ninth position was Barcelona- El Prat, with 20.24 million passengers and 170,108 flights. However the Minister of Development, Ana Pastor, revealed last February in the House of Representatives that the debt of AENA , the public company which manages 90 percent of Spanish airports, amounted to 14 billion euros. The report says that more than half of Spain’s airports have another airfield within 130 miles,Girona , Barcelona , Reus , Valladolid , Salamanca , Alicante , Murcia , Granada and Malaga. Indeed in many cases , such as Galicia, passen-

Tuesday, 24th September, 2013 gers can choose from three: Santiago de Compostela , Coruña and Vigo, all of which are less than a 90 minute drive. Huesca airport, which invested 60 million euro in order to to accommodate 160,000 passengers a year, processed just 2,781 passengers in 2011. It has had no regular flights since last year. The airport Ciudad Real was opened two years ago, but will be inactive when Spanair leaves in October. Staff at Lleida say that the airlines do not want to fly there , and it currently has just one return flight to Mallorca. Valladolid Airport recorded 192,785 passengers, a decrease of 12.5 percent from 2011, while the León had 26,948 passengers, down 28.1 percent. Murcia’s Corvera International airport was built in 2007 with a guarantee of 200 million euros from the regional government. However despite there being no current plans to open the site Murcia’s president, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, defended its construction saying last week that San Javier airport is not an airport that can respond to the interests of Murcia. He said that flying from Madrid to Murcia, for example, is an adventure because you have to get up at four o'clock to book in. Other airports that failed to register any significant passenger numbers include Cordova (8,442 travellers), Albacete (8415) and Vitoria with just 48 passengers per day.

STILL NO DATE FOR TORREVIEJA DESALINATION PLANT

Nine years in the making, an investment of 300 million euros and still no opening date for the Flagship Torrevieja Desalination Plant. One of the largest regional investments of recent years, constructed by the Zapatero government to replace the water from the Ebro transfer and nothing to indicate that it will ever be fully productive. However the Ministry of the Environment insists the plant will soon be operational just as soon as it has resolved the two remaining problems that currently stand in it’s way; an adequate energy supply and customers who wish to purchase it’s water. They Ministry say that it is already producing desalinated water for irrigation, which will increase depending on the needs of users, although they refuse to specify by whom it is currently being used. To produce water at full capacity the plant still requires an electrical substation, which the Ministry acknowledges is currently under construction. According to sources, at this time the plant receives power from a substation in San Miguel de Salinas through two lines of medium voltage.

But the biggest problem is that Acuamed, the company responsible for the operation of the plant, say they have no customers. Indeed the president of the Central Union of Irrigation TajoSegura, José Manuel Claver, said the water is of poor quality not suitable for many crops. He also says the irrigation water currently being produced is far too expensive. Farmers are currently able to purchase a cubic meter of water for 0.14 euros through the transfer system currently in place while the same cubic metre from the plant will cost 0.50 euros plus tax and despite current grants it is still too expensive. Similarly the municipalities that make up la Mancomunidad de Canales del Taibilla (MCT), the Organisation of Channels Taibilla of Alicante and Murcia, say that they will not buy the water from the Torrevieja plant. They also say that the problem is the high cost, which calculations suggest will be 35 % more than the price currently being paid. Just last week Acuamed met with the mayors of Alicante, Elche, Murcia, Lorca and Cartagena as well as representatives of local farmers the Ministry in an effort to reach a settlement.

ALL ABOARD THE TRAIN TO ORIHUELA?

Not wishing to miss out on a unique opportunity, the bipartite government team of Orihuela commissioned their own study into the possible extension of the planned "Tren de la Costa" viability project, in order to ensure as much as they can that the end of the line is not at Torrevieja, but that Orihuela is also included in any future rail expansion plans. Deputy Mayor, Antonia Moreno, confirmed that the town hall has paid 2,500 euro for their additional

documentation, who has said that the document will shortly be presented to Government and the Generalitat Valenciana, whilst also denying that the project will only feature Torrevieja. The proposal was first tabled in August, with the Ministry of Development issuing a tender for writing an informative study of the "Tren de la Costa", an ambitious project that would run between Valencia and Alicante with a budget of 1.3 million euro, with a viability study looking into the Torrevieja extension, for which 243,000 euro was allocated, with an element to also include the Alicante-Elche international airport. The respective Mayors of both Orihuela and Torrevieja, Monserrate GuillĂŠn of the Los Verdes and Eduardo Dolon of the PP, may have to work closer together to extend the plans though, which may well go even further down the line, seeking to not only extend the rail route beyond Torrevieja, but extending the line to Pilar de la Horadada. Torrevieja town hall has taken on the overall representation of the area, as they see themselves as the most important location beyond Alicante. JoaquĂn Albaladejo, spokesperson for Torrevieja town hall, said that he was suspicious of Orihuela's intentions, stating that the feasibility study is for "Torrevieja and not Orihuela Costa", continuing, "Torrevieja is the main focus of tourist arrivals to the Vega Baja region". Albaladejo also pointed out that the Torrevieja team has already identified three sites for the station, although still not prepared to say where, which could become an interchange for trains, buses and taxis.

MAN KILLED BY ALICANTE TRAIN

A man was killed when he was hit by a train in Alicante on Sunday after he attempted to cross the track with a group of friends as they went fishing. The track was closed for 24 hours while accident investigators attended the scene. He died just 20 metres from a sign forbidding pedestrians from crossing the track. An engaged couple were both killed at the same spot a year ago prior to which, in

2002, three hikers died, a 12 year old child, her 50 year old mother and a man of 65 years, while participating in a night walk with a group of 154 people from Elche. The victim was identified as a 59 year old male resident of El Campello. He died at approximately 11.30 am on Sunday morning on a straight stretch of single track near the San Gabriel station. The train was travelling toward Elche. The driver said never saw the dead man but felt and heard the blow as the train killed him instantly National Police, Local Police, Fire and Samu ambulance services were all called to the scene but could do nothing other than collect evidence and remove the body. The stretch of track was closed for about 2 hours while investigations were carried out. During the two hours that the service was cut, Renfe established a bus transfer service between the resorts of Alicante and Torrellano All indications are that the man was returning from fishing when crossing the track. It is an area that is frequented by swimmers and fishermen who regularly use it as a crossing point despite the history of fatalities and the large adjacent warning sign.

SPANGLES PERFORM IN LA MANGA Current Spanish Barbershop Champions, Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus, were delighted to be invited by the Owners’ Club of La Manga to entertain at their English Afternoon Tea Party fundraising event on 11 September. The sun shone, encouraging a good attendance and Spangles were in fine form, treating the audience to a variety of uptune songs and ballads, from John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ to a Beach Boys’ Medley. In the interval tea, delicious cakes and scones with cream and jam were served, instigating the usual debate about whether you should apply cream or jam first to the scones. All the delicious cakes were made and donated by the La Manga Owners’ Club members and were on sale to help boost the fundraising. The whole event was organised by Tricia Brister and her team, raising 335ÿ for El Buen Samaritano charity, which provides around 300 meals per day for people who are facing hardship

and are unable to support themselves. In the current time of crisis in Spain, this is a much-needed and worthy charity. “We’ve had a fantastic time and are so pleased to have helped raise money for a great local charity” remarked Spangles Musical Director, Gail Grainger. “We had a warm reception from a very appreciative audience and we sold out of our supply of Spangles ‘Pure Gold’ CDs that we had brought along to the event. We hope that we can come back again to La Manga in the near future.”

LEND ME YOUR EYES BACK FOR THIRD YEAR

The patio of la biblioteca was the venue last week for a preparatory meeting of representatives of the various working groups for the project "Lend me your eyes". It was attended by Fernando and Carmen Muñoz Guardiola the director and the coordinator of the group. This valuable service is provided by a number of volunteers, who read newspapers, magazines and books to those who are blind, who cannot read or have poor sight. And while in the UK we have had such programs as ‘Newspapers for the Blind’, made popular by Lions, Rotary, Ladies Circle and Round Table Clubs back in the seventies, this charitable concept is virtually brand new to Spain having been around for just 2 years. It was decided that the principle venues to be used in the next campaign will be Residencias de La Loma, administered by the Carmelite Sisters, Los Jardines de Clara and a new addition this year, Mar de Levante en la Playa del Cura, as well as a number of private homes. The Director was delighted to announce that there are currently in excess of a hundred volunteer readers who have applied to join the project but this year only eight will be required. This year the project will also be launched by Age Concern, the association of British residents, which, according to a spokesman, has many needy patients who suffer from dementia and Alzheimer's As such the campaign is now seeking British and Irish readers who will be willing to join the campaign by offering a few hours a week to this extremely needy cause. They should call 695 075 626 or contact staff at the Municipal Public Library. The readings will begin on Wednesday, September 25, in both the mornings and afternoons.

ONLY 17% OF TORREVIEJA POPULATION IN WORK Figures released last week by the Social Security Office show that despite being one of the fastest growing municipalities in Spain the number of actual workers registered in the town is less than 19,000, just 17% of the population. The neighbouring municipality of Orihuela fares only little better, with a population of 92 087 people ,it registers the percentage of Social Security members as 20.2% while the percentage of the working population registered on the Social Security list in Benidorm, a benchmark tourist town, is 36.5% Torrevieja lives up to its reputation as a preferred destination for those wishing to retire, with 26 % of the census composed of those aged over 65 years.

TORREVIEJA POLICE FEEL THE PINCH Despite numerous internal conflicts and disputes, the Local Police of Torrevieja has significantly reduced the overtime expenditure, with a 60% saving in the last four years. A new series of rotas had been one of the biggest issues of late, as well as conflicts with the town hall and the councillors responsible for their management. But it's not only in overtime where figures are reducing, this week saw four of their police patrol vehicles disappear from the parking lot in front of the station, three cars and a multi-use vehicle used by the GRO team to tackle the illegal street sellers. The reason for their removal was an expired lease, with a new contract not coming into operation until October. The Local Police of Torrevieja had already lost three vehicles earlier in the year, now totalling a reduction of six patrol cars and the GRO vehicle. There is no reduction in services anticipated however, with some officers now patrolling on foot, others using municipal vehicles such as the tow-truck to sanction parking offences, and it is not anticipated that there will be further embarrassment to the town hall after the former councillor for the police, Eduardo Gil Rebollo, commandeered charity donated vehicles for police use. It is possible however that the police start to use vehicles which have been left unclaimed from the municipal pound, two vehicles already having been acquired in this way, as was also the case in Orihuela.

IRENE DANCES ON FOR RAQUEL Having raised many thousands of euros for a variety of worthy concerns Raquel Peña truly is a remarkable woman. A model at just four years of age she grew up to be a world-renowned ballet and flamenco dancer. Along with her film director father the family fled from their native Holland to Spain as the war began to take hold in Europe. But with the conditions under Franco proving little better the family moved to New York where Raquel’s career took off as a 4 year old model. When she was just 10 years of age her love of dancing saw her awarded a coveted scholarship to the Metropolitan Opera's Ballet School which saw her training with some of the biggest names in the world of dance and then aged 17 she met the man who was to become her husband, Fernando Sirvent, who became one of Spain's foremost classical guitarists; she married at 18 and had her daughter just a year later. Despite moving in the highest political circles in Washington, dancing for President Nixon and Senator Robert Kennedy the family moved back to Spain and Raquel set up a studio in the family house at Campoverde. Another difficult time followed as Fernando was diagnosed with Alzheimer's with Raquel nursing him until his death 17 years later. As the dance school went from strength to strength it was no surprise when in 1998 Raquel established a dance company and school at Pilar de la Horadada. One of her brightest young dancers

Truly an amazing young talent, at just 13 years of age, she captivated over 200 diners and along with Luciana Ibañez, Sara Martinez and Paula Garcia, the quartet performed two marvellous routines, first traditional and then classical flamenco. The performance of Irene was especially significant as the youngster has a serious health problems that must be seen to urgently. CONSTRUCTION WITHOUT CONSCIENCE - PAR T 2 All local residents living along Orihuela Costa will be all too aware that the construction industry is again seeing a reemergence with large building sites springing up on vacant land throughout the region. Some of these building projects are very large and all are high density, so it is a reasonable proposition to envisage that the resident population of the coast will increase if these properties are successfully sold. I seriously question whether the planning authority based thirty kilometres away in Orihuela have really analysed the consequences of an increase in residents living on the Costa. Simple calculations demonstrate that any increase in the Orihuela Costa population will put additional strains on the inadequate infrastructure and limited council services available on the coast. Take for example the effects of thirty additional families with school age children. Just thirty five additional children would require one extra classroom and school teacher. Where would you accommodate additional classrooms? Already primary schools are so full that half the areas’ school children are forced to be taught in sub standard portacabins. An extra seventy primary school children would require a further two tem-

porary classrooms. If these were erected on the existing Los Dolces portacabins site valuable playground space would be lost. The situation is even worst when we consider an increase of seventy secondary school children. The present prefabricated Instituto is already over crowded with virtually no playground space or sports facilities. On the present site it would be impossible to erect even one additional classroom. Simple mathematics determines number of additional classrooms required if more families choose to make Orihuela Costa there home! Looking at the other end of the age spectrum what effects would an increase in retired residents have? Well it is a well known fact that there are virtually no services for older people on Orihuela Costa. However it is a certainty that the huge influx of retired residents that moved here during the late 1990’s are ageing and with time will become increasingly immobile and dependent. They will require care services, day care and even residential care, all services that are conspicuous by there absence. Many people will die here and require burial but they will be unable to be interred in the municipality they lived in as there is no cemetery on the Costa and there are absolutely no plans or intentions by the Orihuela based councillors to provide one! For the major-

More properties but without the supporting services

ity of retirees residing on Orihuela Costa when they immigrated to Spain they had every intention to be permanent residents. The majority of residents have no second home in their country of origin; they sold up their belongings and made what they believed to be a total commitment to live out their remaining days in Spain. Consequently there is a desperate need to provide essential service for the older population already living here and this need will be magnified many times if the number of older people increases. It is totally irresponsible that the Orihuela based Planning Authority give permissions to construc-

tors to build thousands of additional homes without planning, providing and financing the services people require when live in them. As long as Orihuela Costa fails to have adequate political representation on the council we will continue to witness construction without a conscience. Sandpiper The population of Orihuela Costa need to ensure their voice is heard and the only way to achieve this is to ensure that residents are on the electoral register and make sure they vote in local elections.

ORIHUELA AND THE COSTA NEWS ROUNDUP This weekend marked Orihuela's commitment to the international environmental event, "Car Free Day", with an exhibition of electric bikes and scooters on Saturday, and a pledge presented by the councillor for the environment, Manuel Gallud , for the development of a better infrastructure for cyclists and those wishing to enjoy the benefits of an ecofriendly lifestyle. The town hall are also looking at developing a network of bike rentals, from various points in Orihuela. Carolina Gracia

The Councillor for Tourism for Orihuela, Rosa Martinez, announced the intention for the municipal council to recognise World Tourism Day, which is the 27th of September, under the umbrella title of "Tourism and water. Protecting our Common Future", with a three hour guided tour from Plaza del Carmen, which will take in various water based attractions of the city of Orihuela.

Rosa Martinez

The Department of Public Works, through the local Employment and Development agency, has organised a workshop aimed at giving unemployed residents of the municipality the opportunity to obtain a food handling course certificate, thus giving them the opportunity to obtain a skill that may lead to an improved chance of securing employment in the future.

Youth Councillor, Carolina Gracia, announced the launch of a new line of grants for young entrepreneurs, whose foundation has been approved by the Local Government team and are available on the website, orihuelajoven.es. With a proposed amount of 20,000 euro in the 2014 budget, 11,000 more than in the first edition, the grants are available to those young people who would need assistance to try and start their own business, as well as removing barriers for grants to companies who employ young people, the largest sector suffering through the financial crisis.

The department of commerce has opened up registration for businesses interested in joining the "Outlet" commercial event, which is set to take place in Orihuela on the 3rd to thr 6th of October. Businesses interested in having a stand at the event should contact their department immediately. Sunday marked the "Beach Cleanup" day on the Orihuela Costa, with countless volunteers coming from around the municipality to assist in clearing away the remains of summer, and preparing the beaches for a stable winter. The town hall had arranged a free paella for those taking part, as well as a range of environmental activities put on by the environmental department, including presentations in a dome cinema and an eco-craft market.

MEP INSPECTS CALA MOSCA

Euro-MP for the Los Verdes-Ale group, Iñaki Irazabalbeitia, visited the infamous Cala Mosca this week, to inspect the area of undeveloped land with a view to representing the area in the European Parliament. Irazabalbeitia said that he was unaware of the importance of the land, and the presence of a number of protected species of flora and fauna, to which he has suggested that the town hall act in order to raise funds for environmental development and care of the area, "Combining private and public interests", for an area that should be "left as an example of what was there before the urbanized coast for future generations". The town hall has recently implemented a plan to block traffic access on the site, blocking off both ends to prevent the damage caused by vehicles driving through the area. Whilst in the area, the MEP also visited the illegal garbage dump at La Murada,. The mayor of Orihuela, Monserrate Guillén, accompanied Irazabalbeitia during his stay in Orihuela and asked him to respond and support initiatives from the City Council put in place to protect the environment of Orihuela and the coast, which received a positive impression.

TORREVIEJA BUSINESSES FREE TO SET OWN HOURS The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs of the Generalitat has granted announced that all businesses in Torrevieja will have complete freedom to set their own opening times from 1 October. The permission will be for an indefinite duration. The Councillor of Commerce, Agustina Esteve, announced the resolution on Wednesday saying that the decision had been positive because Torrevieja was an established tourist area and it was currently being penalized after similar permission had previously been granted to the neighboring municipality of Orihuela. The two cities would now be able to compete for trade on an even basis. Torrevieja has a high number of second homes, tourist accommodation, many areas of cultural interest or some extremely important cultural events, one that springs to particular mind is the International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony. Therefore, from 1 October, Torrevieja establish-

ments, regardless of the size of the sales floor and whether or not they are independent traders or members of a franchise, will have complete freedom to decide their own opening times.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.

CARE FOR ELDERLY EXPATS In their haste to move to the sun, many expats ignore the facts relating to getting old and the possibility of becoming infirm. There are now several generations of expats, who found themselves in a good financial position following the rapid rise in UK houses prices a decade or so ago, and others who managed to retire early on good pensions. Added to this were the advantages of exchange rates, which worked heavily in favour of British expats, meaning that those fortunate enough to be receiving an early pension, or in receipt of a private income, could maintain a much better standard of living in Spain and France than in the UK. If we are fortunate, we get old, and for some expats this means returning to their countries of origin where perhaps they have maintained a second home, could be cared for by relatives or return to the UK care system and take advantage of retirement, care homes and sheltered accommodation. Other expats prefer to remain in their chosen country, taking advantage of the warm climate, which for many has eased conditions, such as arthritis, rheumatism and other age related conditions. However, the problems begin once one partner dies, or health issues become serious. What happens next for an elderly or infirm expat living in Spain? It is still the custom and tradition for many Spanish families to look after their own. In many ways, this is one of the favourable characteristics of Spanish people and their culture. Generalisation is always

dangerous, but traditionally the Spanish see it as their duty to look after the elderly and sick members of their families. It is still often the case that upon marriage, the young couple will continue to live in the family home, maybe in an apartment converted from a garage or in a newly built extension. As the family grows, grandparents tend to help to look after their grandchildren. Later in life, it is the young couple, now middle aged, who move into the main dwelling, with the elderly folk moving into the converted apartment built originally for the youngsters. It is a tradition that usually works well, and although this model of care is rapidly changing, particularly in Spanish cities and due to the pressures of modern living, it is still the pattern of life in rural Spain and in the Canary Islands. As a result of care being provided by the family, unlike in the UK, residential homes for the elderly are largely unnecessary and unavailable. There are very few in the Canary Islands, and the ones that do exist are mostly run by religious orders of nuns, and cater mainly for the local Canarian population and not for elderly expats. As a newspaper reporter in the Costa Blanca, I remember visiting a new privately built and operated residential home, designed and marketed specifically for the expat population. It offered a high standard of care in several languages. A clever entrepreneur had spotted a market opportunity, which came as a great relief to many of the resident expats that I interviewed at the time. However, such a development was unique in the area at the time and I was aware of a long waiting list for a place. I am unaware of similar accommodation for the elderly expat being available in the Canary Islands; for example, most care is provided through the islands’ social services, which is now greatly reduced due

966 73 0057

By Bar rie Mahoney

to budgetary reductions. Other care is provided privately in homes through a variety of carers, registered or otherwise. Sadly, such services are often transitory, and not available on a long-term basis, which is important if the elderly expat comes to rely upon such services in their home. Overall, it is not a good position, and I suspect that this issue will become more serious as the expat population in many countries becomes older and more frail. If any readers have more information about residential homes for the elderly in their areas, which are specific to the expat population, do please let me know. I will post any useful information on the Expat Survival section of my website. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF

IN THE BUNKER WITH ‘MICK THE GRIP’ THE ISLAND GREEN at East Lake, Atlanta, scene of this weekend’s Tour Championship, and the FedEx Cup Final. By now we will know the outcome, weather permitting. Going into the weekend it was still anybody’s tournament.

THE BIENNIAL Presidents Cup, in which America plays the World minus Europe, is scheduled for October 3rd at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio, known as ‘Jack’s Place.’ In 2011, at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Australia, the U.S. won by four points, so the World is out for revenge. Australia’s Adam Scott and Jason Day will be high on the Captain’s list, with Els, Scwartzel and Cabrera close behind. The U.S.A. Captain can pick from an impressive list of recent winners, among them Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Zach Johnson. America will have been heartened by their decisive victory over Great Britain and Ireland in the Walker Cup on September 8th. At Long Island they regained the cup by winning the top amateurs’ event 17 points to 9. This was their 35th win since the biennial competion started in 1922. Britain and Ireland have won only 8 times. (It shows Europe does come in useful sometimes.) JIM FURYK became only the sixth player ever to shoot 59 on the PGA Tour at the BMW Championship. But spare a thought for Polish pro golfer Pawel Japol, who’s opening round of 109 in the Kharkov Cup, Ukraine, left him 45 shots off the lead. He started on the 10th, was one over after three holes, but then dropped 18 shots in four holes. A ten on the next was followed by two triple bogeys, leading to his fin-

ish of 37 over par. We all have our off days. Gold cat winners THE PGA NATIONAL RUSSIA course outside Moscow held it’s grand opening this month, and aims to host European Tour competitions when it’s luxury 250-room hotel is completed. Apart from the “Dunes” course, St. Petersburg, and the Pestovo Golf and Yacht club on a 16th century royal estate outside Moscow Russia isn’t big on golf courses yet. (Must be something to do with the weather.) AVAILABLE FROM October: TaylorMade’s new SpeedBlade irons, “Our most complete iron ever” according to T.M. Featuring the same Speed Pocket as the Rocketbladez, but widened and lengthened to give more clubface area toward the toe and heel, the SpeedBlade also features their Inverted Cone Technology (bigger sweet spot on off centre hits.) With an internal slot which allows for more flex and rebound Taylor Made say they have created their fastest face yet in the Speedblade. (Warp Factor 10 blades next?) DURING HIS illustrious career Arnold Palmer has won seven Majors, collected four Masters’ green jackets, and raised millions of dollars for charity, in particular the Arnold Palmer Medical Centre for children. Happy Birthday Arnold, 84 this month. HARRY SCOTT, from New Jersey, U.S.A. played a round of golf in every American state last year, from Maine to Alaska. This year he played a round of golf on six continents in six days. Starting in Australia and finishing in S. America his trip commenced with an 8.a.m. tee time at the Bonville Golf Resort, NSW, followed by a three hour drive north to Brisbane, where he caught a flight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He played the Glenmarie Golf Club then headed for Egypt and the first tee at the Dreamland Golf Resort, Cairo. Next stop London for a morning round at Stoke Park Country Club in Buckinghamshire, where those classic scenes for "Goldfinger" were shot. From there it was off to Nassau, Bahamas, for a round at the Ocean Club, which left South America: the Junko Golf Club near Caracas, Venezuela. And so to bed. "It's something to do," said 79 year old Scott, “It's fun, and I've got time on my hands.” And cash, obviously. Until next time, happy golfing. YOU WERE WARNED! Over the last few weeks I have made you aware via this golf column of the arrival of the ‘high season’ period for golf prices, well as they used to say in Dads Army,” we are all doomed” and “they don’t like it up em”, because the high season period will be here in full force as from 1st October 2013.The difference between high and low season periods can be up to €20 per person on some courses. SABA SUMMER KNOCKOUT FINALS

The Finals of the SABA Summer Knockout Competition, incorporating the playoff of the Men’s Four Wood Pairs Leagues, were held at Country Bowls Club from Friday 13th to Monday 16th September. Some 250 bowlers entered the Knockout competitions covering 6 different disciplines. This meant that over 200 matches were played in the Preliminary and 1st rounds alone, this year’s competitions were sponsored by Indigo Car Hire who arrange car hire both in the UK and in Spain, see their advert in the Leader and don’t forget to mention SABA to ensure a great deal. Friday Morning saw the playoff of the Men’s Four Wood Pairs between Ian Kenyon’s team from Vistabella and Pete Bonsor’s team from Quesada. The end result was something of a surprise as Vistabella ran out winners on all three rinks Martin Foulcer and Pat Rafferty beat Harry Rhodes and Pete Bonsor 18 – 13 Ian Kenyon and Fred Willshire won 16 -13 against Graham Phillips and Brian Robinson Jr. While Les Barber and Arthur Brown completed the story with a 15 -14 win over Derek Toozer and Bill Pain. Friday afternoon saw the start of the Semi Finals of the Knockout Competition this covered the Mixed Triples discipline. Once again this had a strong Quesada presence with three of their teams involved, Peta Rhodes Nigel Baigent and Derek Toozer faced Cas Blay, Harry Rhodes And Jack Martin, Derek and co. led all the way to win 19 – 11 while in the other semi Pete and Lisa Bonsor assisted by Bill Pain proved just too strong for Greenlands Jeannie Clements and Sue and Vic Mahomet winning 19 – 14. Saturday Morning saw the semi’s of the Mixed Pairs and the Ladies Singles The Pairs once again was dominated by Quesada Teams with Lisa and Peter Bonsor producing a comfortable 18 – 7 win against La Siesta’s Joy Gardiner and Dave Eccles and Deidre Leeming and Bill Pain running out 20 – 11 winners against Vistabella’s Beryl and Mike Regan. The Ladies Singles Semi’s proved to be much tighter affairs Vistabella’s Maggie Furness took on Mazarron’s Julie Cooper, Maggie shot off into the lead on end 1 only to be slowly hauled back and by end 7 it was 6 all after this there was never much in it Maggie slowly crept ahead again to lead 19 – 15 after 19 ends but then Julie took control and finally ran out 21 – 19 winner. In the other battle Peta Rhodes took on San Luis June Jones last year’s winner,.Peta shot off into an early 10 – 1 lead but June steadily fought back to lead 19 – 18 after 19 ends Peta then got her act together and sealed a 21 – 19 victory. The afternoon featured the Men’s and Ladies Pairs Semi’s In the Ladies Pairs San Miguel’s Ann Eagle and Sabrina Marks had a tough game against Sandra Heath and Lynn Greenland

from Greenlands the Greenlands pair held a 7 nil lead after 4 ends only to see it disappear on the 5th end after this it was nip and tuck with Ann and Sabrina just sneaking it 21 – 19. Vistabella produced the teams for the other semi with Barbara Brown and Maggie Furness taking on Gail Watson and Beryl Regan, Barbara and Maggie lead all the way and despite a late fight back from Gail and Beryl they went through as 20 – 16 winners. Pete Bonsor and Bill Pain were once again involved in the Men’s Pairs and despite a really close game against Greenlands Vic Mahomet and Ken Parker, a magic last wood from Bill sealed a 17 – 15 Winners of the two singles victory. In the other game home competitions, Pete Bonsor team Steve Pearson and Peter and Peta Rhodes Whitehall were always too strong for Vistabella’s Martin Foulcer and Brian Harman as the 24 – 11 score line shows. Sunday Morning saw the last of the Semi Finals with the Men’s Singles, this time it was San Luis who produced 3 of the 4 Semi Finalists but that man Pete Bonsor provided the main threat to them Pete took on Colin Lindgren and try as he might Colin was unable to take the tie with Pete winning 21 – 15. The next semi pitched Last Year’s winner Keith Jones against Colin Jackson and despite a late comeback by Colin Keith took it 21 – 19. Sunday afternoon saw the start of the Finals The Men’s Pairs which looked as if it would be a really tight affair turned out to be a simple victory for Pete Bonsor and Bill Pain with Country Bowls Steve Pearson and Peter Whitehall not being able to find it on the day as Pete and Bill won 19 – 5. The Ladies Final was however a cliff hanger, Barbara Brown and Maggie Furness took an early lead at 10 – 3 after 10 ends but Ann Eagle and Sabrina Marks slowly fought back to lead 14 -10 after 15 ends then on the 16th end things swung again as Barbara and Maggie picked up a 5 with the San Miguel pair taking 1 on the 17th they were tied at 15 all going into the last but Barbara and Maggie held their nerve to pick up 2 shots and to take the title 17 -15. Monday saw the final 4 Finals with Pete Bonsor involved in 3 of them. We kicked off with the Mixed Trips which unfortunately proved to be a very one sided affair as Peta Rhodes, Nigel Baigent and Derek Toozer were completely unable to cope with the power of Lisa and Pete Bonsor and Bill Pain so they conceded after 12 ends at 19 -1 down. Lisa, Pete and Bill were then involved in a real shock ending in the Mixed Pairs Final Lisa and Pete faced Bill and Deidre Leeming and looked to have everything sewn up leading 18 – 13 with two ends to play only to drop a 2 on the 17th and a disastrous 6 on the last end to hand the title to Deidre and Bill 21 – 18. The two Singles finals completed the day and the weekend in the Ladies Final things were tight for most of the way Julie Cooper took a slight early lead but Peta Rhodes was always in touch and after 21 ends it was 15 all but despite Julie picking up a 3 on the next end Peta finally took the title with a 21 – 18 win. The Men’s Final between Keith Jones and Pete Bonsor was also a very tight affair, Keith led 9 3 after 8 ends but then Pete found his rhythm and raced into a 17 -9 lead, Keith came back and was only 17 – 18 down after 22 ends Pete then took control and took the title 21 – 17 Phew what a day. SABA Co-Ordinator Arthur Brown and his wife Barbara who organised the event would like to thank Umpires and Markers, spectators for their support, Country Bowls helpers and not least of all to everyone who entered the these competitions for making them such a success.

EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB On Tuesday, 17 September, EI had their monthly visit from Bob and his Highjackers. It's always a good, friendly, competitive game played in the right spirit and this game was no different. After two high-scoring rinks and four very close rinks, we finished all square with three winning rinks each. However, Bob went home a very happy chappie with a shot difference of 109 to the Highjackers against 78 to the Isle. Don't celebrate for too long Bob, our next meeting is on 8 October - you'll need to keep a clear head!

Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel After the excitement of the 4 Wood Pairs Men taking the Title on the Friday, the SABA Finals weekend continued on Saturday and Sunday for Vistabella. On Saturday Mike and Beryl Regan faced a tough task against Quesada’s Bill Pain and Deidre Leeming and despite a valiant effort they lost 20 -11 to the eventual winners of the title. Maggie Furness faced Julie Cooper of Mazarron in the Ladies Singles Semi, Maggie took the lead on end 1 with a 4 only to be slowly hauled back and by end 7 it was 6 all after this there was never much in it but Julie finally triumphed 21 – 19. In the afternoon Maggie teamed up with Barbara Brown to take on Our own Gail Watson and Beryl Regan and this time Maggie and Barbara prevailed to go on to the Final with a 20 -16 win. Also on Saturday Martin Foulcer and Brian Harman took on Country Bowls Steve Pearson and Peter Whitehall in the Men’s Pairs Semi Final but this time the home team were too strong and ran out 24 -11 winners. On Sunday Barbara and Maggie faced the very strong San Miguel team of Ann Eagle and Sabrina Marks who won the title in 2011. Barbara and Maggie took an early lead only to see it slowly disappear and after 15 ends they were 14 – 10 down but a 5 on the 16th end put them back in the game and despite conceding 1 on the 17th a 2 on the final end saw them crowned SABA Ladies Pairs Champions. The full significance of this is perhaps that they were the only non-Quesada SABA Knockout Champions all weekend. Next week the Valencians let’s hope for some more good news.

MONTE MAR BOWLS CLUB (Sponsored by Super Valu) Sunday 15th September 2013 - Gentlemen Versus the Ladies In this annual event six teams of men play against six teams of ladies and after six ends the men move up a rink whilst the ladies remain. Tuesday, 24th September, 2013 ADVERTISING HOTLINE 966 73 0057 LEADER EUROPEAN TEAM BOWLS GETS UNDERWAY SUNDAY The Spàin team, Janet, Graham, Lynn and Peter, go into the tournament as one of the favourites

The opening ceremony of the Ninth European Team Bowls Championship will open in a blaze of glory at the Emerald Isle Bowls club on Sunday morning at 9am. Dubbed amongst bowlers as ‘The friendly Games’ this most prestigious of tournaments will see 16 teams, vying to lift one of the most significant trophies in the world of lawn bowls. The fact that Spain has been chosen to host the games shows just how much the sport has developed here and as the host nation, this year, Spain is one of the favourites to lift the crown. The Spain team will consist of Peter Bonsor (Quesada), Lynn Greenland (Greenlands), Graham Cathcart (Tenerife) and the current National Ladies Champion, Janet Dando (Indalo). All are extremely experienced bowlers and have represented their adopted nation on tournaments all over the world. They will meet teams representing the nations of Cyprus, England,

Germany, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Ireland, Israel, Jersey, Netherlands, Portugal, Scotland, Switzerland, Turkey and Wales. There will also be a Presidents Select team which will make the number of entries up to the convenient number of 16. Two bowlers from Spain have been selected to play in that team, Lynda Hall from Marbella and a former Spain International bowler, Barry Latham of La Marina Bowls Club. The games will be played at both the Emerald Isle and San Miguel Bowls Clubs starting on Sunday morning and running through to 4 October. Admission is free to both of these venues and spectators are encouraged to go along and support their team. GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB Greenlands Bowls Club recently held an open forum, which was very well attended and enthusiastically received. Amongst the agenda, were the following selection appointments: Winter League: Captain: Hilda Cork. Vice Captain: Mike Veale. Selector: Steve Cantley. Southern League: Oaks: Captain: Dave Greenland. Vice Captain: Brian Pocock. Selector: Jan Westall. Elms: Captain: Allan Brown. Vice Captain: Marilyn Fryatt. Selector: Penny Tomkins. Cedars: Captain: Dave Thompson. Vice Captain: Dave Webb. Selector: Chris Dewar. SABA League: Maples: Captain: Steve Hibberd. Vice Captain: Marilyn Fryatt. Selector: Averil Toozer. Sycamores: Captain: Ted Upham. Vice Captain: Penny Tomkins. Selector: Allan Brown. Chestnuts: Captain: Chris Dewar. Vice Captain: Alun Hewitt. Selector: Dave Webb. One of the best turn outs for a while (34), played their part in a high scoring Saturday bottle club. Winner Di Lawton, surprisingly opted for the beer instead of the brandy (being teetotal, she probably thought it was 'sin alcohol'), as the star prize went to runner up Dave Webb. Terry Lawton & Steve Hibberd left with the wine, but the wooden

spoon prize nearly caused a fight, when 3 bowlers squabbled for it. Not even a countback could separate them, so they kindly decided to donate the 70 percent prize to next weeks winners. A super 'welcome back' function, was recently held at Restaurant Corazon, Hotel Costa Blanca Resort. Woody provided the musical entertainment, Tom Hill a light hearted quiz, John O'Brien gave lessons in how NOT to play crazy golf, all topped off with a superb 3 course meal. Special thanks go out to Jill Collins for organising such a pleasant evening. I'll tell you what, it appears that nothing's sacred at GBC nowadays! My on the spot stool pigeon, has reliably informed me that a certain member was spotted playing his favourite sport recently, wearing one Reebok, and one Umbro sock. I know PL is good, but never realised that 2 companies had fought for the honour of his sponsorship! Historical evidence has been found that William Tell and his family were avid bowlers (known as lawn bowling at the time). However, all the league records were unfortunately lost to antiquity. Therefore, we'll never know for whom the Tells bowled.

180s: Joe Miller (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury (Meerkats) No real surprises in the first week of the new Euronics darts season, with the exception of the Porterhouse´s match against newcomers Que Pasa Eagles. I expect Porterhouse (formerly Pirates) to improve on last year´s performances and anticipate a decent top half finish, it must therefore have been a little surprising to come up against the Eagles, whom my spy tells me have a good all round experienced team of arrowmen. Their star player John Walker, certainly flexed his muscles on their opening match, scoring 135,130 and 120 in his doubles. My informer also predicts a top three finish for Brett Badlove´s Eagles who no slouch himself on the oche, polishing off the match on D10. Val Viney top scored for Porterhouse with 121. Eagle, Stuart Clark contributed to his side´s success with a useful 120 and 84 game shot showboating on T20,D9,D3. Kevin Wood 140 and Jim Storey 123 put the finishing touches to an impressive opening game of the season. Porterhouse captain Ray Sanderson will be looking for a better result in his next match, a difficult visit to Busters at Playa Flamenca, who themselves opened up with a comfortable away win at Villamartin´s Tavern bar. The match was lost for newcomers the Tavern in the first half where they could only muster one leg. 15 at the break is a mountain to climb. However two singles wins in the remaining six gave them some creditability and they will only improve. Taverner Ivan Jones finished his singles on 66 (S16,50) after earlier hitting a 140. Daniel Kaul was the other winner in his first ever competitive match. Babs Warren starred for Busters with 100,123 and 140 although she was the victim to Ivan Jones 66 out. Will Drummond´s 116 set up the match winning double for the visitors. Both sides from the Hub had good opening wins, the Hyenas had a tough task when they grappled with the Bears from Breakaways although they had built a 2-4 advantage at the break. Missing a cou-

long silver mane, who wrapped up the match with a 125 and D10. Hyena Joe Miller hit a maximum, 140 and a 93 out (T19,D18) in his legs with Shaun Smith adding 2x140. The Bears Mike Snow 140 and Cyril Harrison 105 did their best to overhaul a strong Hyenas outfit. Meerkats also managed a 180 through captain Derek Kingsbury´s first throw in his singles against PB´s proprietor Phil Batt, it did however take a further five sets of arrows to achieve his second 180 points. A decent 14 tons or over from the Kats was too much for the Pirates who could only muster a lone win from Michelle Lane in her singles against Graham Todd requiring 71, she hit S19,S20,D16 to raise the roof from both sides. Kats newcomers Patrick Abrams 3x100 and Lee Maiden 3x100, 135, performed well as did stalwarts John Eyre 100,125,140 and Alex Nikolov with four game shots. Pirate Brian Mears 118 wasn’t enough to take out Eyre in the last but one single. League champions Gogarty´s opened their account with a fine away victory to Madigans (Los Dolses). Poor old Ernie Wilson was pulling the remainder of his hair out as the bars delivery of his favourite draft beer hadn’t arrived by match time. It obviously had a serious effect on the amiable gent as he didn’t figure in any of his side´s victories. The Gophers held a 2-4 lead at half time, courtesy of a ton from Cynthia Jevons and a fine doubles victory from the Pattersons, Richard and Christine over Karl Cooper and Leah Chesworth, who were probably more concerned about where their delivery was. Elaine Willis kicked off her Gogarty´s career with a singles victory on D10 after a 104. Ron Young, Pete James and Karl Cooper replied for Madigans to level at 5 apiece. Brian Newton and Kevin Procktor took the last two legs for the champions. New faces all round when the Pint Depot Queens entertained the Hunks who had made the laborious trek from Hattons bar. Queen Ann (O´Keeffe) banged in D1 for the first leg to the home side. That was their only leg until half time, although some decent contributions from Debbie Wright, Cheryl Sleath and Rachel Broadhead wasn’t quite enough to prevent a 1-5 half time scoreline. Slippery Steph Simpson won his singles on 16 (S11,S3,D1) against Queen Ann and then Rod Buller just back from sunny Essex faced the might of Queen Marie (Dunne). Scores of 77,93,65 and 80 from the royal one left the Essex man bewildered. Needing 19, Queen Marie threw S17 and D1 for an excellent second leg. Dave Arlett wrapped up the match for the Hunks with a 140 and D2 against new bride Queen Debbie, who must have had other matters on her mind. A good win for the Hunks who will be looking for some sort of silverware this year. Regrettably Derek Kingsbury (Results Co-ordinator) has had to implement Rule 12. The match Hattons Honeys v. Pint Depot Kings has been awarded to the Honeys due to the result not being forwarded by Friday 10 a.m. Listen to darts chit chat with Kevin Reardon and Paul Durrant on Exite Radio 89.2 and 93.1FM on Saturday afternoons between 3 and 4 p.m. Paul Durrant, League Chairman

By Terry Screen We fished the 4th round of the Winter League at Nancy’s this week on the 17th September. The morning are now closing in rapidly and it is not getting light until 7.15am making it difficult to see to peg the water and to check the pegs are safe and fishable. There was a good turn out with only two dry nets, but work parties are desperately needed to create some more pegs to enable us to accommodate all the anglers. The Medio Ambiente has done no clearing of the banks so far this year as the allocat-

ed money has apparently been used elsewhere. The pegs below the boom are still the pegs to draw as once again they produced the winning weight. 1st Ian (The Wizard) Dalzell with 18.540kg fishing the feeder using maggot, 2nd Stan (The Man) Roberts with 17.600kg fishing the pole using bread and maggot, 3rd Bill (The Master) Reade with 14.770kg fishing the feeder using Maggot All details are available on our website www.abbeyangling.com or from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 965 32 8368

ELCHE HAVE REAL PROBLEMS BY JOHN MCGREGOR

CA OSASUNA...............2 ELCHE CF ......................1

The reality of life in the fast lane is steadily kicking in for Elche, emphasised by this defeat by the bottom club in La Liga, Osasuna from Navarra who began the match with no points at all after four defeats with ten goals conceded. With three draws from the first four games everyone connected with the Illicitanos were hoping for a first win, but it wasn’t to be. Following the goalless home draw with Valladolid on Monday evening Elche made one change to the starting line up where the Bosnian international Stevanovic began in place of Javi Marquez in midfield, arguably the Franjiverdes at full strength. The first goal came early on the quarter hour as Damian Suarez failed to clear on the edge of the area, the ball running loose to Armenteros whose low shot to the far post eluded Herrera, and put the Illicitanos on the back foot for the rest of the game. Fidel on the left and Stevanovic on the right were working well but their crosses were not finding Boakye or Coro, and the first half finished 1 – 0. Within three minutes of the re-start it was all over as a chipped through ball found Oriel Riera, who despite the attention of centre backs Botia and Lomban controlled the ball, turned and slotted in the second: 2 – 0 and the home side looking comfortable. As ever, positive Elche coach Fran Escriba rang the changes on the hour with Del Moral, a striker, replacing Stevanovic, a midfielder, and three minutes later a direct midfield swap Javi Marquez for Carlos Sanchez. Well, Elche improved a little and Boakye had a shot miles wide but the Franjiverdes looked unable to mount a serious attack. In the 86th minute a cross from Fidel was clearly handled by Bertran, and up stepped Elche full back Edu Albacar. I cannot recall him missing a penalty, and he duly slotted in this one to give Elche some final moments of hope, and Osasuna some panicky ones, but no 94th minute Boakye equalisers as per the Almeria game two weeks ago: Elche tamely

lost 2 – 1 to the most abject team in the league. On Wednesday evening this week the dream of all green and whiteblooded Elche supporters comes true after 24 years when the great Real Madrid, Christiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and all come to the City of Palms to play in a La Liga game. If there’s ever a good time to play Real Madrid, I can think of better ones, but hey, this is football, and anything can happen. Whatever does happen, Elche are playing Spain’s greatest team historically by merit, the Franjiverdes promoted back up to the big league after a phenomenal season ending as record Champions of the Second Division - and no-one can ever take that achievement away. But that was then, and this is now. The new recruits especially must play their part and blend in with the old guard: it’s about 50/50 at the moment in terms of numbers. New players like Richmond Boakye, Carlos Sanchez and Ruben Perez must do better if Elche are to stop the rot and get some confident performances together. Several seasons ago Elche had a nasty habit of losing their first half-a-dozen opening fixtures, firing their manger and playing catch-up, which they always managed to do for the rest of the season to finish averagely. I hope it gets better before that happens: Escriba is the man who delivered Elche back to the promised land, and deserves more. A Real’ test is coming on Wednsday... Mucho Elche! Elche’s Ghanaian striker Boakye

DANI LUCAS TO THE RESCUE FC TORREVIJA......1 CD UTIEL....................0 If you like something a bit different from a football match, then come along to Vicente Garcia Stadium. With Torry leading from a 54th min penalty by Dani Lucas, a somewhat bizarre 4 sending offs took place. These 4 dismissals were so unusual, in as much as none of them were for incidents on the field of play. With time running out and emotions high, a visiting substitute gave a few choice words to a linesman as he was warming up, and was promptly dispatched down the tunnel by a no nonsense ref. Next it was Torry's defender Valdeolivas turn to upset our sensitive arbitro. Having been substituted, he too expressed verbal expletives to the match officials, and although sitting in the comfort of the dugout, was given a 2nd yellow card for his misdemeanours. Not wanting to be left out of the action, a bemused Torry delegate was given his marching orders for holding on to the match ball. Finally, Utiel's manager joined in the circus, as he too was sent packing for another latin verbal outburst. Oh, and yes there was plenty of action on the pitch as well. From as early as the 2nd min, Torry gave notice of their desire to attack, when Gasch fired just wide of the post. Obele should have scored 6 mins later, but as at Muro the week before, he shot straight at the keeper when through on goal. As Torry dominated play, Gasch brought out a fine save from keeper Gerado, then from the resultant corner, Obele headed over. But it was Utiel who almost snatched a goal just before the interval, as Priento missed a sitter from close range. Torry were quite rightly awarded the penalty for hand ball, which Dani Lucas confidently dispatched. Midway through the 2nd half, Utiel had a blinding effort strike the post before bouncing to safety, as the game sprung into action. A goalmouth scramble resulted in the ball squirming the wrong side of the post, much to the relief of an over worked Torry keeper Carrion. Pastor embarked on a penetrating run, culminating in his shot being pushed aside for the first of 4 successive corners, as Torry got back into the game. Utiel somehow contrived to hit both posts from another threatening assault on goal, then from the next attack headed narrowly wide. When on 87 mins, Carrasco was unfairly shown a yellow card for supposedly 'diving' in the Utiel box, which in my opinion was a cast iron penalty, all hell broke loose, resulting in the afore mentioned sequence of events to take place. On Sun 29 Sep, ko 6pm, Torry visit local rivals Orihuela for another div 3 encounter, for which Torry Army will be running a coach to.
