Ever a continual problem facing those who consider a harmless game of bingo nothing more than a “bit of fun”, with licensing and laws on gambling ignored by some, the British Legion in Spain has taken the bold step of attempting to protect their own interests, by effectively banning bingo. A statement reads that, “After discussions with the Legion's Spanish solicitor”, the association has reminded Branch Committees that bingo is not allowed in Spain, unless the correct permits have been obtained from the local town hall. They also remind members that failure to obtain a license “could result in a not inconsiderable fine”. For fear of the obvious embarrassment a respectable and charitable organisation like the British Legion would face should a case come to light, the association has said that the responsibility would lay directly with the Branch Committees themselves, should an infraction be found, and in no way using the funds which are collected to help those in need. It is likely that other associations take a similar stance, as all too often blind eyes are turned down to the laws of a country, until such time as the legislation is enforced, and therefore, in this case, prevention is the only cure to avoid the clickety-click of fines and prosecution.

MAYOR PAYS TRIBUTE TO CHILD RESCUERS The mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, Fidel Ros, paid homage last week to police officers and civilians who saved the life of a 7 year old child last December after he had fallen into an open well. The incident occurred just 2 days before Christmas when two agents together with a member of the public, Soufyane Boudene, heard a child sobbing in the courtyard of a house. They saw that a small boy had fallen down a pit and was clinging to a pipe. In his citation the mayor said that, together with help from the police officers, Boudene did not hesitate to enter the pit in order to rescue the child, despite the risk to his life. The presentation to the officers and Boudene took place on the feast of the patron saint of the police, San Miguel Arcángel. The ceremony was attended by the mayor, Luis Fidel Ros, the head of the Local Police, Jose Antonio Hernandez, and the Security councillor, Francisco Lancharro.

Following on from the audit of the registrants on the padrón in Orihuela and the coast, the Police in Playa Flamenca have now received a batch of letters which they will attempt to deliver personally. Of the 13,000 anomalies identified, a large number of people have already presented themselves and confirmed their status, one way or another, and it is now up to the police to attempt to hand deliver the letters to those who have not yet responded. It is important for the town hall to maintain as high a number of residents listed on the padrón as possible, as this directly affects the amount of funding from the regional and national governments. Orihuela currently has “large city” status, but would lose that should the figure drop as much as was originally at risk. Similarly, for the municipality to go over 100,000 residents, they would automatically obtain the next level status, which would give even more money to spend on public services and facilities. The police will attempt to deliver the letters three times, all of which will be recorded, before the final stage of removal will commence. In this matter, the police are operating in a manner to assist both the town hall and the individual, to ensure that you are properly registered. Therefore, there is nothing to fear from the police turning up at your door to deliver the letter; they are simply following the protocol of trying their best to confirm the nationally audited statistics.

REPRIEVE FOR TORREVIEJA COUNCIL EMPLOYEES TOLD TO RETURN SALARY OVERPAYMENT

The overpayment mainly affected lower paid employees in the gardens and maintenance departments

Some 175 Torrevieja council employees who have been receiving an overpayment of 12.84 euro a month in their pay packets for the last 39 months were this week told that they must pay it back into the municipal coffers. The overpayment came about after the City accountants failed to apply a 5% cut to the salaries of over 30% of the 600 council officials in line with new government policy. This isn´t the first time the Torrevieja council have ignored instructions from the National Government. In August we reported that, “Torrevieja Council is not enforcing the extension to staff working hours, as approved by the governing board in June, which would lengthen their working week by 30 minutes, in order to meet the 37.5 hours mandated by central government in 2012, requiring them to complete 1,664 hours per year, to reduce the deficit and avoid further public employment contracts, and includes a pay freeze.”

Most of those involved in this claim for money back belong to the gardens, parks and municipal works department. Those affected have all received a brief communication distributed by the city personnel department informing them that the cut will be made in just one instalment to be taken in December despite the fact that the matter has not been previously discussed. The instant reduction of 600 euro in a month´s pay packet may be a bitter pill to swallow, especially given that matters relating to the recent mobile phone scandal are still raw, with a number of the hierarchy of the town hall using their municipal funded mobile phones to allegedly call prostitutes, game lines, friends, family and whilst on trips abroad. Daniel Plaza, the Councillor for Education and Sport resigned from his post as a result of that scandal. Widely recognised as a servant of the people of Torrevieja, Graham Knight, reportedly clocked up a 1,120 euro mobile phone bill in just 2 days. Councillor for

Infrastructure, Javier Montoro, spent 415 euro in a two month period making personal calls to his partner, although he was one of the first to admit the mistake and return the money, but the socialist group of Torrevieja estimated some 6,000 euro of the 25,000 per month mobile phone bill was being paid for such “abuses” as these. With many of the employees affected being on the very lowest salary band, their wages only narrowly exceeding the thousand euro mark, the decision to take out the overpayment in December would have meant a very unhappy Christmas for the workers of the municipality.

However, in a last minute reprieve, Joaquín Albaladejo of the ruling PP team expressed his “outrage” that neither he, nor the mayor Eduardo Dolón, had been advised of the situation in advance, subsequently cancelling the immediate refund instruction. Although the money will still have to be returned, it is hoped that a more suitable solution to the problem can be found.

August was only the second losing month of the year so far and Mr Murray was far from surprised. “Traditionally we haven’t done too well in August.

Football is one of our strongest areas and naturally the form hasn’t settled down as yet. We always, always stress that the sports betting advices pay in the longer term – they’re by definition volatile, unlike our arbitrage facility but will definitely outperform that return over any sensible protracted period.” Results certainly seem to justify the company’s confidence as Mr Murray explained that since January 2011, anyone following the sports betting advices, placing the bets themselves and adhering to the carefully crafted staking plan would have seen their original capital increase by almost 300% “Sticking to the staking plan is crucial”, adds Mr Murray, “our advices are proofed to the national UK press and a firm of chartered accountants, so we advocate transparency but those results

and returns are all intrinsically linked to the staking plan explained to everyone that joins Winning Express”.

TORREVIEJA NEWS ROUNDUP

José Serna, spokesperson for the UPyD political group, is criticizing the town hall for what he has described as the “disproportionate” amount of money spent on developing the official website of the town hall, Torrevieja.es. Serna believes that the 600,000 euro budget for the creation of the municipal website has not led to the creation of online services for the citizens of the town, but has created nothing more than an “unattractive compendium of links to PDF files and other websites”. The adult education centre in Torrevieja is reporting a considerable increase in interest from young people looking to obtain further education, as they seek to better themselves and try to secure a path to employment during these testing times. Many adult education centres have been closing down around the area, but Torrevieja is one of the principal centres that is continuing to thrive.

A total of 60 unemployed people from Torrevieja have successfully completed a training course that would give them the first step on the ladder of obtaining work in the kitchen and hospitality section. Sadly, as the summer season closure means more workers are also laid off, they may have to wait until things pick up again at Christmas, but they will at least have a certificate that will further their chances of success. In a situation that is becoming increasingly regular, Torrevieja town hall has once again received criticism from the Ombudsman, this time for failing to take sufficient measures prevent the collapse of a listed building in Los Balcones. The Ombudsman notes that although the city of Torrevieja has ordered the owner to take emergency measures to avoid the danger of the building collapsing, they failed in their duty of conservation by allowing it to get into the state that it has.

The alleged perpetrator of the shooting that killed the notary Juan José Martínez Román in October 2009, whilst committing a robbery in Torrevieja, did not hesitate to recognize all offences listed in the case, prompting a total of 55 years in prison. The prime suspect in the case has also claimed total responsibility, stating that none of the other people who stand accused are guilty of the crime.

PREGANT BRITON DIES AT GIRONA AIRPORT A young British woman died yesterday in Girona airport after she became dizzy and lost consciousness. The 21 year old, who was pregnant, was travelling to Birmingham with her family. A spokesman for the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) said that an ambulance was called at 15.24 which arrived at the terminal at 15.38, a time considered "within the standard" in such emergencies, although an official from the union UGT denounced the time as excessive, saying that his members would have responded much quicker had the airport healthcare facility not been shut down a year ago. The body of the girl is currently at the Institute of Legal Medicine of Girona where an autopsy will be carried out to reveal the cause of death.

MADRID FLIGHT IN ROME EMERGENCY LANDING An Alitalia Airbus A320, operating on flight AZ-63 from Madrid to Rome Fiumicino, made an emergency landing on Monday with the right hand landing gear still retracted in the aircraft. The plane, with 151 people on board, decided to fly over the airport in order for ground staff to confirm what the cockpit indicators were telling the pilots, that the landing gear was not properly deployed. This situation was confirmed and the crew subsequently prepared for an emergency landing with the right hand main gear remaining retracted due to the right main gear doors not opening. The aircraft landed on runway 16L about 50 minutes after aborting the first approach and 25 minutes after the low approach, before the aircraft came to a stop and was evacuated by using the emergency slides. Luckily there were no injuries as the crew performed a “text book” emergency procedure. Meanwhile, reports indicate that an American military aircraft made an emergency landing on the island of Mallorca, displaying signs of having been shot at. No further details of this incident are available, due to the sensitivity of military operations. The incident did not cause delays to commercial flights.

The European wide air traffic controllers strike planned for Thursday the 10th of October has been called off, after an agreement to enter into dialogue between the controllers and European managers. Following a meeting on Friday, Volker Dick, president of the ATCEUC, said, “It seems that now the EC is finally ready to listen”, and so it was unanimously decided to postpone all industrial action. “During the ATCEUC committee meeting we were given assurances by the European Commission that together with the Performance Review Board (PRB) they are willing to really discuss the safety issues and our views on their unrealistic cost efficiency targets”, said Dick. “ATCEUC has decided to give a new opportunity for dialogue and expects that the EC takes this opportunity to effectively listen to social partners,” said Dick. “In the forthcoming days, ATCEUC expects to achieve a real and effective social dialogue where our concerns and proposals will really be taken on board.” However, should those talks break down, Dick also maintained that the 14,000 controllers throughout Europe are fully ready to take further action in the next few weeks, including those that have been now postponed.

NUMEROUS INJURIES IN TRAIN CRASH NEAR LORCA

A commuter train smashed into a truck that was on the railway line on the Lorca to Águilas route on Thursday afternoon, in the Pulpí area, resulting in at leat 15 people being injured. Pictures from the scene shows fire damage to the front of the train, and the truck completely destroyed after the train, with some 70 people on board, pushed the vehicle around one hundred metres along the track as it attempted to stop. According to the emergency services, seven of the injured have been rushed by ambulance to hospital, including the drivers of both vehicles.

MORE DISSATISFACTION WITH GARDEN WASTE COLLECTION One of the few council services that the residents of Orihuela Costa receive is the daily collection of rubbish. However, no where is there more controversy and dissatisfaction than in garbage and garden waste collection services. Whilst some parts of Orihuela Costa receive a first class service and the large metal and green bins are emptied with regularity other areas receive what only can be described as a sub standard, second class rubbish collection service. If you drive through the municipality on any day of the week you will find large mounds of rubbish piled by the side of the garbage containers waiting collection. In many areas these mounds grow, often overflowing across the roads, pavements and accesses to people’s homes. Small uncollected rubbish mounds often start to grow as local residents add their own contributions to it. Consequently life is made a misery for the poor unfortunate house owner who is unlucky enough to live near it. Garden and green rubbish has not been collected since August in most parts of the coast leaving misery for residents. The fault for these unsightly, street rubbish tips lies firmly with the Orihuela Council and their sub agents the rubbish collectors. There is no central waste disposal centre where bulky items

or garden waste can be taken, facilities that are common in most UK towns and cities. There are few containers for disposing of garden waste; the few areas that are lucky enough to have a garden waste container located near by will usually find that it is rarely emptied and huge piles of garden waste flood across roads and pavements. As this gigantic compost heap ferments in the heat of a Spanish day the smell of decay, plagues of flies and cockroaches invade local homes. However, one can not ignore the role played by local householders. There are so many thoughtless people who have no consideration for their fellow residents. Many people seem to be happy to dump their waste in front of someone else’s home, as long as it not in front of their own front door. Once garden waste has been discarded by the side of the rubbish bins it seems that it becomes open season and everyone starts adding their own contribution to the ever growing pile. Worst is when residents ignore the garbage bins entirely and start adding all type of bagged household rubbish onto the growing mounds. Once these have been torn and ransacked by local wildlife the smell becomes intolerable. Many people have complained that they have seen mice and rats in these disgusting rubbish tips which clearly constitute health hazards.

Huge rubbish tip unmoved since August

Driving around Orihuela I have never witnessed the same degree of rubbish piles by the side of the standard garbage containers and any pile that does accrue isn’t left uncollected for weeks at a time. One needs to question why Orihuela Costa doesn’t receive the same standard of rubbish disposal. All residents pay for an equal rubbish collection service. Is this another case where the coast is blatantly discriminated against? If Orihuela Costa had more councillors then their collective voice couldn’t be indefinitely ignored.

All Orihuela Costa residents need to vote to ensure that the population of 33,227 receive services equal to Orihuela City. Sandpiper The population of Orihuela Costa need to ensure their voice is heard and the only way to achieve this is to ensure that residents are on the padron and the electoral register and they vote in local elections.

ORIHUELA AND THE COSTA NEWS ROUNDUP Orihuela town hall has now commenced a survey by which the company SkyBus will collate data to ascertain if the budget for bus services on the Orihuela Costa can be better allocated. SkyBus are experts in creating “Transport on Demand” networks, which has proven particularly successful in Málaga for example, whereas a standard but streamlined route can provide braches to local areas as and when required. The town hall is therefore keen to know if more people would use the bus and why they would use it. The Councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, explained that the town hall “can´t spend more money, but they can spend the existing budgets better”. The form is available in Spanish, English and German and can be completed online in a matter of minutes, at the website www.orihuelabus.es.

Spanish man. The police arrested him on suspicion of robbery with violence and intimidation. The Department of Beaches has opened a complaint against a company that owns a pipeline that burst of Friday, causing a large amount of water to spill onto the beach at La Glea. As a result of the flooding, municipal workers had to intervene to recover the beach, some of whom followed the path of the water to identify and rectify the fault themselves. The matter has also been reported to the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS) and the Provincial Coastal Management to take appropriate action. Similar to other municipal councils, Orihuela town hall has announced the imminent clampdown on illegal advertising hoardings, or billboards, which have been popping up along the roadsides of the Orihuela Costa. The infrastructure department has advised that the majority of these hoardings do not meet the minimum legal requirements, such as identification of the owner of the board, a reference or check number, many lack liability insurance and some have been erected, illegally, on public land. Although the town hall is currently prepared to assist those billboard owners who want to legalise their structures, after a warning period, One of dozens of hoardings with questionable planning permission

Orihuela local police have arrested a man who is suspected of attacking and robbing a 29 year old British woman last Tuesday while she was withdrawing money from a cash dispenser at a bank in Aguamarina. The woman reported that a man had become aggressive towards her and she surrendered to him for fear of her safety. As a passer-by helped the woman, the robber fled the scene. Having provided a detailed description of the man to the police officers later identified a suspect who matched that description fully. He was confirmed to be a 52 year old, none native

they will take action to remove the signs and may well send the bill for doing so to the owner or advertiser who appears on the boards.

The thieves took flight with 6 chickens Orihuela Local Police arrested three men, aged between 20 and 32, for allegedly stealing six chickens from a farm in Fortuna. The incident occurred on Sunday, when officers were alerted by a member of the public who had witnessed the theft and was following the vehicle, losing sight of it in the La Matanza area of Orihuela. Minutes later, officers observed a vehicle that matched the description of the one given, therefore deciding to stop the vehicle and examine the contents. The officers found chickens in the vehicle, as well as several branches of marijuana and pruning shears. The chickens were returned to their owner. The deadline for families to apply for financial assistance with subsidy from the town hall is Thursday the 11th of October. The government team has once again set aside funds to help those of low income to subsidise things such as school books, and are eager to offer a share of that budget to those who qualify. If you are finding it difficult to cope with the increasing costs of schooling, you should contact the town hall immediately where they will guide you, in confidence, through the application and qualifying process.

LÍNEA DIRECTA’s MEDICAL TREATMENT GUARANTEES QUALITY FIVE THOUSAND CAUGHT NOT WEARING SEATBELTS Figures released by the DGT traffic department reveal that during the recent clampdown on seatbelt wearing enforced by the Guardia Civil, half a million vehicles were checked, resulting in 5,288 vehicle occupants found not wearing a seatbelt, a staggering 318 being children who were travelling in the vehicles without any restraint, 63 of whom were in the front of the vehicles, 255 on the back seat. According to a spokesperson from the DGT, “there is still a stronghold of drivers who ignore both the messages sent on the benefits of using a seatbelt as well as the legal obligation to do so, endangering their own life and that of others”. Continuing “despite the repetitive message that the seat belt halves the risk of death in an accident, it also reduces the severity of the injuries and prevents the occupant from being ejected from the vehicle on impact”. With checks made from on the ground and in the air, the campaign has been seen as a success, albeit the DGT have no intention of relaxing their keenness to enforce the law through the traffic department of the Guardia Civil.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.

A HOME IN THE SUN Recently billed as a “storm raging” about “the shocking”, but some would say accurate, portrayal of the seedier side of life in Gran Canaria, gave quite a few of us a good laugh recently. Indignation and denial from the tourist board was the immediate reaction to the recent Spanish television programme broadcast, which was, according to the programme makers, intended to give an honest portrayal of the places that it visits - warts and all. However, I suspect that sensationalism rather than honesty was the most important thing on the producer’s mind during filming. From sordid accounts of sex workers plying their trade to tourists, to swingers, drugs and rum drinking youngsters intent on forcing their charms on unsuspecting tourists reminded me of similar antics reportedly taking place in Ibiza and Majorca, as well as Blackpool, Brighton and Rhyl. Well, it is all the stuff of good, seedy, summer television isn't it? Gran Canaria is a very popular holiday destination that appeals to many different age and interest groups. The island’s long established ‘live and let live’ attitude is one of the key factors in this island paradise that appeals to so many, and is the reason why many moved to this island. As long as it doesn't hurt anyone else, anything goes, within reason, of course. Naturally, this view of life irritates and shocks some people, but I suspect that it titivates more than it offends the majority. There are few cities in Europe, including the UK, that doesn't have sex workers, legal or otherwise; indeed, I suspect that a city that is drug, alcohol and swinger free is unique in Europe. The tourist board of Gran Canaria, as well as some of its citizens, are said to be shocked by the recent revelations, fearing that the negative

publicity will undermine the recent hard work that has gone into promoting the island as an international tourist destination. As a firm believer in the saying that there is no such thing as bad publicity, I suspect that after a little fuss and hot air being blown by local politicians and priests, they have nothing to worry about in the long term. On a more serious note, I recently received a request from a ‘television company’ asking me to participate in their offering for would be expats. Most readers will remember good quality programmes, such as “A Place in the Sun” aimed at helping would be expats to fulfil their dreams of expat life. However, an endless and tedious succession of dubious ‘copycat’ programmes such as “Overseas Builders from Hell” and “Overseas Homes from Hell”, which delighted in publicising and exaggerating the demise of the expat who actually had the courage to fulfil a long held desire and dream of moving to another country. Of course, such programmes often fulfil that well-known and unfortunate British trait of knocking the successful, as well as the envy and jealousy of those who have something that they do not. Such programmes are rarely worthy of airtime, and are usually low budget affairs made by one-off television companies established specifically for the purpose. Although they are often promoted under the respectable guise of BBC, ITV, Channel 4 etc, in reality they are nothing of the kind. The programme’s ‘researchers’ usually do little more than contact local publications and businesses in their target area, asking for a list of likely people who would be willing to contribute to their programme. Most people are initially flattered by the request and will happily participate in such programmes, only to be embarrassed by the time that the programme is aired. I know several people who have contributed to such programmes, and who have later been horrified by the way that their contribution has been edited, or simply ignored, because it failed the sensationalism test that was considered essential to give the negative spin that the programme makers desired. In my own case, careful questioning of the researcher, as well as the programme’s producer, revealed that they were looking to sensationalise the negative aspects of moving abroad, with a focus upon the possibility of losing everything should the euro collapse, yet another

slant on the ‘land grab’ situation in Spain, as well as the collapse of the Spanish building industry. Needless to say, I declined their offer. So if you are an expat in Spain, do be wary if you receive a phone call from someone in the UK who begins the conversation with “I’m from the BBC/ITV/Sky etc.” On a cold, wet, winter’s evening in the UK, I firmly believe that most people prefer a good news story, as well as something to feed their hopes and dreams of a life in the sun. DECLINE IN TEENAGE PREGNANCIES With many blaming the financial crisis, whilst others believe it is as a direct result of the withdrawal of grants, the actual reason has yet to be concluded, but teenage pregnancies have almost halved in the last year. During the past year, the number of young people under the age of 19 who became pregnant has dropped, with figures also revealing that 45.3% of those who fell pregnant having an abortion, although terminations are also reportedly on the decline overall. In total, during 2012, 2,289 under 19 year olds

became pregnant, compared to 2,534 in the previous year. Referring back to the times before the crisis, the figure has dropped by around 1,000 compared to the year 2008. The balance provided this week by the Department of Health shows that a decline has been maintained over the last five years for mothers between the ages of 15 and 19. As for abortions, in 2008 there were 1,625 terminations, with the data for 2012 showing a decline to 1,252. Overall in the Valencia region, there were 35,361 births, a drop of 14,177, which is attributed to the decline in foreigners relocating to the region.

TORREVIEJA LADIES DARTS ORGANISATION ....... Ladies Blind Pairs This week, the Ladies of the League gathered at El Balcon, in Los Balconies, for their first get together in order to start and get the Winter season under way. Thanks go to Fernando, our Host for the evening, and also because he kindly carried out a small refurbishment, and realigned the second dartboard into a more manageable position for our games. All the names went into the hat and the Blind Draw was made. Reaching the quarter Finals: Shirley Ward & Ann McGivern beat Marylyn Jackson & Kim Fickle, Noreen Dobbs & Thelma Storey beat Pam Taylor & Ann Bartlett, Julie Musa & Laima Klimoniene beat Brenda Knowles & Lin Cousins and Jackie Tomkinson & Shirley Stephenson beat Ann Wharton & Caroline Shepherd. several games above and beyond the call of duty! Further thanks to Sheila Clements and her team El Balcon Chicas, for running the Raffle and donating the Raffle Prizes. Finally, thanks go to Ann McGivern for collecting all the money, Jackie Tomkinson for the helping with the Draw, and Fernando for the excellent buffet during the evening. Kylie & Max Burgazzi: Our Best Wishes go out to Kylie and Max who have now moved back to the U.K. You are already missed by your Team Captain Ann McGivern, but especially the League, who will miss you next year at our Presentation evening. You both did so well by providing the “Professional Touch” and playing appropriate music for all the presentations made at our 10th Anniversary Dinner this year. I am sure everyone in the League will join me in wishing Good Luck and Best Wishes to you both. Dave’s Babes: With the departure of Kylie and another team member, Dave’s Babes are now looking for an addition couple of Lady players to join them for the new season. 180s: Joe Miller (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury, Patrick Abrams (Meerkats) Highest finish: Will Drummond (Busters) 116 The Hunks entertained current champions Gogarty´s and trounced the visitors from La Zenia. Although officially champions the Gophers side is a shadow of the all conquering outfit of last season. That said, from what I hear Gail Todd is doing a grand job for the Gophers and they will soon be back to winning ways. Rob Hawkins once again showed the other Hunks how its done on the board, with yet another fine performance including a couple of ton pluses. Captain McCulloch or Stewart as he is sometimes known secured both points for his team in the 8th leg. A spirited performance earlier in the match from the Pattersons (Richard and Christine) winning their doubles against Dave Arlett and Kenny Wilkinson, couldn’t however be repeated and their winning leg was their only victory of the evening. John Linton weighed in with a ton as did Cynthia Jevons but not enough to prevent a landslide win from the Hunks who will definitely determine where the championship goes this season. The Tavern and Honeys shared the points down at the Villamartin Plaza, but only just through saviour Tracey Simpson in the very last leg to salvage a point for the visitors. Some decent arrows were

thrown by the away side particularly the De Lacys, Phil 130,121 with Simone contributing a ton. Ray Green 100 and Simpson 100 supported well. The Tavern have the basis of a good outfit, but have the usual problem of team members periodically returning to the UK. Sean Farrell and Ivan Jones 100,116 were the main stay for the Taverners. Sitting at the top of the table the Meerkats did a demolition job on the Kings from Pint Depot and to date have lost just the one leg. To be fair the Kings had numerous opportunities of winning legs but couldn’t convert the all important double. A win was a fair result for the home side but maximum legs for Derek Kingsbury´s side flattered a little and the Kings went home knowing they should have done better. Some super darts were thrown by Kats newcomer Patrick Abrams his tally for the evening was 3x140,4x100 and 3 game shots and believe it or not he is still practising. A super performance from the graphic designer. Lee Maiden confined by the skipper to just two playing legs still managed a 121,100 and a double in the last leg of the evening. Dave Wright probably illustrated the way it was for the Kings earlier in the triples. A fine ton was followed by the new groom requiring 86. What does he go and do bust and leave John Eyre to convert D10. That’s the way it was for the visitors but they will only get better. Porterhouse registered their first win against their former venue PB´s. Another game of missed doubles but some decent darts thrown by both sides inbetween. Michelle Lane who seems to be featuring on a regular basis, took out Porter´s captain Ray Sanderson for the Pirates only victory. Porter´s Peter Ayres was the home side´s star hitting four game shots and 2x125 in his winning single. Ray Hayes had a nice 83 out (T17,S16,D8) and a 140. Phil Batts 100 wasn’t enough to beat Sue Sanderson whilst Yvonne Rouffignac 140 and Val Viney won the third doubles for 6-0 at half time. The Queens had the unenviable task of taking on unbeaten Hyenas at the Pint Depot (El Galan). A tasty 119 from Lorraine Cox wasn’t enough as Andy Brooker took out D16 for a 0-1 lead. Cox continued her scoring in the next but Simon Williams 100, Brooker 100 and Shaun Smith D7 continued the Hyenas winning ways. Some formidable scoring from Ann O´Keeffe and Marie Dunne resulted in a win against an incredulous Williams 118 and Geoff Harvey. Two decent singles wins from the Queens courtesy of Vi Turner and Cox D4 beating no other than Joe Miller were the highlights for the Queens, whilst new signing golf supremo Dave Lethaby was the victim to Vi Turner. Rachael Broadhead who left all her housework until next week put in a great performance after utilising all her spare time practising. Nice quote from Ms. Wright ¨are they as bad as us or were we as good as them¨. Nice one Debbie. Que Pasa Eagles enjoy a 100% record after an excellent performance by their star player John Walker. 3x140 and 3x100, plus a couple of game shots was his contribution, plus further 140s from team mates Den Hall and Jim Storey to give the Bears a difficult time. Del Lister and Cyril Harrison gave a good performance in the pairs for the home side to make it level at half time. It already looks like the Eagles and

Kats will remain close to the top with the Hunks, Hyenas and Busters chasing glory themselves. Busters stay close to the top after their visit to the Madigans bar. Leah Chesworth 100 and Karl Cooper 140 figured for the home side but showing the way was visitor Mark Filer 2x121,125,102,100 and Paul Dowington 140,100. To top that Will Drummond hit the league´s highest finish to date with a superb 116 out. Fairly modest you may think but players are only playing one leg per category. I think 116 will be beaten, but nevertheless an excellent performance. An editorial glitch reduced last week´s report by 50% and of all teams to omit it was league sponsors Debbie Wright´s Pint Depot Queens against their fellow Kings. Briefly husband Dave performed well 137, assisted by Gary Minor and Eddie Fozzard to go 5-1 up at half time. Ann O´Keeffe starred for the Queens winning her singles and getting another double in the pairs. The Taverners Ivan Jones had a 93 out (T20,T7,D6) supported by some good throwing from Sean Farrell hitting three game shots. Former singles champion Sam Salt and Hub barman extraordinaire is still illuminating the dart board in the Federation League and for that matter wherever else he plays. But did you know he is not a bad footballer either. He recently turned out for the Hub in a round robin charity soccer tournament at Playa Flamenca and was voted player of the tournament. His efforts were not enough however as the Hub lost the play off to South Yorkshire Police 2-1, who are current holders. The event raised 4,000 euros. Not content with his soccer contribution, Sam along with Simon Williams and Tony Forby are abstaining from alcohol during the month of October to raise money for a very worthwhile cause The Macmillan Centre Support Group. How these three can manage not to drink for a whole month in what they are calling ¨OC-SOBER¨ I don’t know but they are expecting to raise four figures and are already well on their way to their target. Anyone interested in supporting the boys can do so via Facebook or direct to the Hub at Villamartin. Exite Radio are this season sponsoring a player of the year (girls and boys) and a team of the year, based on weekly performances. Nominees will all be given points with a player/team of the week given three points. Top scoring categories at the end of the season will receive awards. Nominations: Team of the Week: Honeys, Meerkats, Porterhouse. Player of the Week. Girls - Lorraine Cox, Tracey Simpson, Simone De Lacy. Boys - Mark Filer, John Walker, Pat Abrams, Peter Ayres. Continued from Page One These results ensured that the overall team table saw Spain finish 3rd, behind champions England and Scotland, deservedly earning themselves another bronze medal. During the championships, it was announced that John Muldoon, director of lawn bowls in Spain, had been elected to the post of Junior Vice President of the European Bowls Union. This means that in 4 years time, John will be President, which will possibly see a return of the championships to Spain. He was delighted with the outcome of the 2013 European team championships, in which Team Spain's results were better than one could have hoped for. Thanks were given to the management of Pat Metcalfe, Derek Toozer and Fred Roberts, and also to the organising committee of Bob Donnelly, Deidre Leeming and Jackie Breslin, who have supported him in the running of this event. Finally, he expressed gratitude to both Emerald Isles and San Miguel bowls club for all their hard work (especially Mel O'Dell and Brian Allen), which had gone towards making this such a successful tournament, and to the grassroots bowlers of Spain for

966 73 0057

their valued support at the championships. On behalf of Emerald Isle, President Geoff Farrington gave a large vote of thanks to the committee and other helpers, the bar and catering staff, plus maintenance man Marcos, who kept the green in pristine condition. He also thanked both players and umpires, for the excellent entertainment provided over the week, and hoped that his club would be given the opportunity to host this competition again in the future. Spokesman for San Miguel, Brian Allen, said what a tremendous experience it had been to have all the different countries playing on their green, and went on to thank all their members who gave up their valuable time in getting the club ready to hold the championships. Brian also acknowledged how hard the staff of Cheers bar had worked throughout the tournament. At the start of the tournament, it was stated that these were to be known as the ‘Friendly Games’, and although the competition was fierce, the matches were conducted in a very fair and amiable manner. Whilst some of the better known teams from UK, Channel Islands, and of course Spain, were competing hard for

Monday, 7th October, 2013 honours, many lesser known nations in the bowling world were also on view. I spoke to Mirko Limmer from Beerwalde, East Germany, who told me that his country has only 20 members. Although this is the 9th European championships, it was only the 3rd time for Germany, who are based at the country's sole club, Su Lobichau. Spare a thought for the tournaments basement club Turkey, for their members have to travel over 6 hours to reach the nearest green, allegedly practicing on half a football pitch, with many of them learning to bowl using the internet. Having said that, their ladies certainly got my vote for being the smartest, and fittest, team in the competition! Then there's the Isle of Man, who like Germany, only have 1 green, and are void of local competition, plus Switzerland who use a curling rink, which is drained to play bowls in the summer. So, the next time we have a moan about the occasional run (or 2!) in a green, let's count our lucky stars that we are considerably better off than some of our European cousins. Listen to Kevin Reardon’ report of the tournament on Exite Radio, 93.1FM, this morning just after 12 noon.

GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB By Steve Hibberd

By Bob Donnelly This competition from Sept. 21st – 28th was played in the same format as last year, with the Northern clubs playing the earlier rounds at Benitachell and the Southern at Vistabella, with the semi-finalists from each section playing to the Final at Montemar. There was some fine bowling in all the rounds, and, as last year, the honours were equally shared between the North and the South. The Triples was an all Northern affairs between Bert Mc. Lean, Tony and Maggie Lawley of Benitachell against Pat Vaughan, Tony James and Charlie Speedie of Finca Guila. Whilst the earlier ends were closely contested, the Benitachell trio gradually gained control, and, in the end, had a comfortable win. This was not the case in the Fours Final where the team of Jo and Jules Pering, with Val And Chris Collier of San Miguel, were equally matched against Colin Jackson, Colin Lindgren with June and Keith Jones of San Luis.

Every end was closely contested, and there was never more than a few points separating them until the final end, where the San Luis four tried their best to overcome the small difference, but, to no avail, as the San Miguel four hung on to clinch the title. Many thanks to all the venue clubs for allowing the use of their greens, the Umpires for showing their usual efficiency, and for the Organisers to ensure that everything went smoothly. Next year these Championships will return to the normal two week period, with increased disciplines, and, with the newly introduced Valencian Federation membership of â‚Ź15, it is hoped to increase the number of members, who will join the Federation, specifically to play in this type of competition. Congratulations of the highest order go out to our treasurer extraordinaire, none other than Lynne Greenland. During the recent European team bowls championships, our Lynne not only did her adopted country Spain proud, but once again flew the Greenlands Bowls Club flag with pride. Alongside Jan Dando, she won gold in the ladies pairs, having beaten a host of top nations along the way. In the mixed fours, they were joined by Pete Bonsor and Graham Cathcart, a combination which performed well on their way to a bronze medal. Finally, enough points were earned to be rewarded with another bronze, this time in the overall team category. Well done Lynne (any chance of forking out for some new trolleys the club desperately needs - go on, you know you want to!). Jim Oliver writes: "A record 44 bowlers turned out for last weeks Sat bottle club, with all rinks being used. No doubt the numbers were boosted by 8 visitors from the honest town of Musselburgh, Scotland, who were on a mixed golf and bowling package tour organised by Greenlands. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves, their company was appreciated by all, and I'm unhappy to announce that they nearly won a top prize for their valiant efforts. As a token of their appreciation for the warm welcome shown by us, they each donated a bottle of spirits for future prizes. The winner of the top prize was Chris Dewar, beating Tom Hill into 2nd spot by 1 shot. Runners up were Jim McLean & Jean Giddings, with Eileen Merrick grabbing the wooden spoon, although she has been away in the UK for 4 months - see you on the winners rostrum soon. Congrats to you all, and see you next Sat. During my reign as club scribe, I fortunately haven't needed to report a bereavement of one of our members, that was until now. Having been a member for over 11 years, Shirley Turner played both internal and external league matches, as well as supporting many club social events. Prior to joining Greenlands, Shirley and her husband Brian ran the bar at La Siesta BC. During my first year in the game, I was fortunate enough to have had the pleasure of bowling in the same team as this lovely lady. Regretfully, Shirley suffered a stroke 2 years ago, and recently she passed away at her home in Crawley, Sussex. RIP Shirley Turner. Week 5 and 30th September brought in some unexpected results with La Siesta Sharks being knocked off its perch leaving Izzys Magpies to take over. Starting with the top place, Dorothy’s Magpies overcame Steve’s Steakhouse in a close finish with Sandra and Tracy best for the Steakhouse with 2 wins while for the Magpies, Stewart and Jane topped it with 3 wins leaving Martin and John (those skilful crib players) winning nothing. At Catorce, John’s “B” team also just missed out in a close match against Brian’s Jaguars who had 2 pairs with 2 wins, while for Catorce only 1 pair could match them with 2 wins. At Tracy’s my Falcons, without mine and Gill’s help, went 5-0 up and then only won 1 more against Ayliff’s Galea “A” whose 3 pairs scored 1 win each, while for the Falcons it was the turn of Bill and Sue to win 3 games. Also in Tracy’s, Richard’s Ospreys reversed their fixture with Jim’s Sharks while the new bowls carpet is being laid and Dennis and Joe proved best for the Sharks with 2 wins while for the Ospreys, Phil and Jay excelled with 3 wins. Sue’s Jays went to town at Izzys Bar against Mary’s Peacocks who are still waiting for their first win and it was Mary and Jean who blobbed again (but only just) leaving Sue and Maggie for the Jays to lord it with their 3 wins. Keith’s Merlins at Ebony & Ivory are also still seeking their first win and came very close against Derek’s Robins who were blessed with those 2 ladies, Gladys and Jackie with their 3 wins while for the Merlins, Keith and June were best with 2 wins. Over at Meson Galea, Brian’s “B” team took 2 of the last 3 for a fine win against Peter’s Sportsman who had Peter and Frank struggling without a win leaving Russ and Diane of Galea to boss it with their 3 wins. Last but not least, at the Tropical King, Val’s Voles (oh dear) slumped against John’s Catorce “A” who had Brian and Mary on form with 3 wins and moved into 2nd equal place, while for the Voles only Ken and Norman had any idea with their 2 wins. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. Courtesy Costs Nothing A few weeks ago I witnessed an event on the golf course which made me squirm in embarrassment and disgust. My society were playing one of the more established courses in the area and on the 3rd hole the players hit the ball right and left and on looking for the ball went to the ball on the right and dropped off the player with clubs to play and keep up with play while the other player went to the left to find his ball which was behind a line of trees and required to be played down the left hand side of the fairway. He drove the buggy down the left hand rough, played his 3rd shot and then drove back across the fairway but past ‘buggy this way markers’ which he hadn’t seen on his travels down the left hand rough, He was approached by a course marshal who instead of correcting him in the error of his ways screamed at the player “Are you blind or can’t you read”. Fortunately the golfer to whom he was speaking is calm and benign and apologised for his error however I know of many players of a more fiery nature that could have acted rather differently. Just why did the course marshal think that he could talk to the paying client in this manner? For sure this golfer will not return to this course in the near future and all for a little courtesy and respect that costs nothing. Is it just me or are most course marshals like grumpy old men carrying the world on their shoulders. Most able bodied retired golfers would love the chance of a part time job of this type involved in a game that they love in the sun. I suppose that with all the pressures we face in the world today we lose track of the really important things in life. As well as the normal monthly prizes, thanks to sponsors, there were many additional prizes up for grabs on the day. La Finca is personally one of my favourite courses out here in Spain and one I never tire of playing. Even off the yellows it is a long course with many holes demanding an accurate tee shot. On to the match and as last month, scoring was on the whole good with most players registering 30 stableford points or more. Prize winners were:-

LO CRISPIN G.S. Alenda Golf Course 02.10.13 For a change this week instead of our usual Stableford, we played a team game 6x6x6 medal. This format requires one person to score on the first 6 holes, 2 persons to score on the next six holes and 3 to score on the last six holes. Each team was carefully grouped so as to have a fairly even handicap and everyone thought on starting out that there would be no pressure with four people to help. Not so, especially on the last six holes and when you saw your ball heading for one of the ravines or into the scrub and you knew that you have to continue playing as your score was needed, then it gets difficult. Most teams grasped the concept of how to mark the card, but on some cards there was enough writing to fill an encyclopaedia, but we got there in the end. The ten teams managed magnificently in the sultry temperatures of late summer and everyone was glad to get into the air conditioned clubhouse for a little respite. This week we had the privilege of having a member of the PGA playing with us, Paul Lovell. It was nice to watch and see how this game should be played it looks easy when done properly. Onto the results: 1st Martin Collins, Dicky Claeys, Chris Nield and Geoff Dowsett 134 2nd Malcolm Morrison, Padraig O'Brien, Norman Potter and Stan Earl 136, 3rd Margaret O'Brien, Paul Flanaghan, Alain Crain and Gordon Cobb 141........NTPs: Peter Morris hole 5, Brian Smith (in 2) hole 7, hole 14 proved unreachable in 3 and Paul Carter hole 16. CLARKES BAR G.S. This week we travelled to the Seve designed course at Peraleja for our weekly stableford competition. Once again the work being done on the fairways showed a marked improvement in their condition but unfortunately the failure of the water pump after hollow tining meant that the greens had many bare patches, that had been seeded and sanded, and very bumpy surfaces making putting very awkward. Hopefully the work done will lead to a rapid recovery and the greens will be restored to their usual high standard. Nevertheless the scoring on the day was good considering the above and the results were as follows: Nearest the pin on hole 9 was Robert Conley Nearest the pin oh hole 16 and nearest the par 4 11th in 2 was John Porter Longest Drive on hole 18 was Robert Wardrop. Winner with 36 points was John Porter Runner up with 34 point was Robert Conley. Next week we are at Vistabella first tee at 09:00, meet at the bar at 08:00 A date for your diary is Thu 7 November when we will be having our Poppy Day Appeal competition at Peraleja sponsored by Mick the Grip please make every effort to attend.

LA ZENIA GOLF SOCIETY AT EL VALLE Another good turn out for us at El Valle, on Thursday. We are now playing three times a week to accommodate the demand. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. To arrange at game just contact Mo or me ( Eric ) in the usual way. A bit disappointed with El Valle on Thursday as all the greens had been white sanded, the putting at to be a little careful. And the bunkers were not at their best. Again this extended hot Weather was with us again, a light breeze was a welcome. We played at two courses the other being Riquelme, playing the normal full handicap stableford, a

two's pot, and two n/t/p's on both courses. Results were n/t/p's No 5 at Riquelme John Clayton, No 17 at Riquelme Jeff Luke, No 6 at El Valle Steve Cardwell, No 12 at El Valle Marcia Langdon. Two's pot shared by 4 John Clayton, Gerry Hickey, Mark Todd, and M Cleary. Winner on the day M Cleary with 37 pt's on C/B. The raffle was won by Dave Morrison. kindly sponsored by James at Gogarty's We retuned back to Gogarty's for the presentations. Thanks to James and his staff, once again for their service and great. LAS RAMBLAS G. S. We started the week off with a Medalford. This is a competition which is a combination of Medal on the front 9 and Stableford on the back 9 with the Stableford points taken away from the Medal. The winner with 18 was Phil Herrington and in second and third, separated by a count back, were Terry Field & Benedicte Kruse both with 20. Scoring was very good in Wednesday's Singles Stableford with Terry Field, playing off 2, coming in with a superb 40 pts. The most profitable shot of the day came from Rod Doel who got the only two in the 2s Club on the Par 3 10th following a very favourable bounce off either a tree or the fence to the right of the green which meant his ball ended up close to the pin. We all need a bit of luck sometime! The full results were: Cat1. 1. Terry Field 40 pts, 2. Lindsay Forbes 39 pts, 3. Barbara Hitchings 37 pts. Cat2. 1. Allen McClusky 38 pts, 2. Rod Doel 36 pts, 3. . Our competition on Tuesday 1st October was a Medal/Ford, the front nine played as a medal game and the back nine as a Stableford. This is a challenging game in as much as most members get the scoring wrong, myself included. The weather was superb, I think Spain has forgotten that its supposed to Autumn, it was like playing a golf match in August with the temperature in excess of 30 c. Tuesday also marked the last Competition of the year to qualify for points in the Consistency Cup. Some excellent scores were recorded which made Ian very happy, you could almost hear his chainsaw buzzing ready to cut the handicaps. The results this week were: Nearest the pin: Hole 5 John O'Brien, Hole 9 Ian Henderson This weeks winner was:1st Place John O'Brien H/cap 7 with a net score of 5 pts, 2nd Place Ray Housely H/cap 8 with a net score of 6 pts, 3rd Place Martin Rickman H/cap 8 with a net score of 9 pts The consistency cup results were: Winner John O'Brien 57 pts, Runner up Kenny Reddington 54 pts El Plantio 2 Golf Society play every Tuesday, visitors are most welcome, either put your name on the sheet in the clubhouse or telephone Ian Henderson on 966 716 616 or 636 116 230 John O'Brien

GREAT FIRST HOME WIN FOR ELCHE BY JOHN MCGREGOR

ELCHE CF ........................2 ESPANYOL .......................1

Before this match Espanyol were riding high in seventh place, and Elche, despite last week’s first La Liga win away at Celta Vigo were fourth from the bottom. It never looked like that during this exciting match, as Elche took the game to this sound senior side firmly announcing their intentions to stay in this mighty league. 23,683 watched the match on Saturday afternoon, including some 2,000 noisy fans who had travelled down from Barcelona – and then had a long, miserable journey home. After scoring last week’s winner Javi Marquez rightly retained his place in Elche’s midfield alongside the classy Ruben Perez, with Fidel and Carles Gil wide and Coro and Manu del Moral up front. Edu Albacar, injured during last week’s win was well-substituted then by Cisma and that sound situation stayed the same for this game, otherwise the defence as expected. It took a little while for Elche to settle, but the Franjiverdes soon began to build exciting attacks, and Moral, Marquez and Coro all went close, when five minutes before half time Cisma’s throw in just inside the half-way line found Carles Gil’s head, and a quick flick forward sent Coro on his way. Real name Corominas used to play for Espanyol and you’d have thought they’d have known you mustn’t give him an inch he’s so fast (ask Real’s Sergio Ramos): Elche’s top scorer last year left two defenders for dead and as goalkeeper Casilla came out pushed it wide into the corner of the net. Half time 1 – 0 - and Elche deserved it. Espanyol began to raise their game in the second half, and on the hour the visitors brought on Mohican-haired Thievy for Stuani. After seemingly sensibly substituting Moral with Sanchez, instead Elche began to look more vulnerable at the back as mistakes crept in. The Illicitanos survived a few nasty moments, but then a mixup halfway through the half let the lively Thievy to equalise from close in, cue the visiting fans delight high in the upper

tier. Elche could have folded as Espanyol went for the winner with several close efforts but as the Illicitanos showed against Real Madrid ten days ago there is a terrific spirit running through the team and chances came and went at both ends. With a quarter-of-an-hour left Fidel set Carles Gil free down the left. The Valencian Spanish under-21 star is playing so well, and cut in to the by-line, beating his man to find Coro in the box, still with a lot to do. With his usual lightning reactions Coro went round his man and slotted the ball low into the corner for his second goal, and Elche’s winner. Espanyol were unravelling as their control went, and so did their captain Sanchez, sent off for a second yellow. After the last home refereeing fiasco against Real Madrid Senor Gomez handled this game perfectly, always trying to let the game run wherever possible, a welcome relief. After numerous second half stoppages, a worrying one of which saw Coro off on a stretcher, there were four minutes of extra time, but Elche were by now fully back in control and finally the home fans gave their heroes a standing ovation, welcoming and recording that important first home win of the season. The international break now will give Elche the opportunity to get the injuries treated ready for Real Betis in two week’s time. In the meantime, the boys in green and white deserve our congratulations for a great performance to deservedly take them half-way up the table. Mucho Elche!

LARGE HOME CROWD CHEER ON RACING PLAYAS C. F. Racing Playas de Orihuela ...2 Ath Crevillente C. F. .......................1 First home game of the season saw local side Racing entertain Crevillente in front of a

large home crowd. Both side where coming off the back of opening day victories last weekend. Racing got off to a dream start when Said Boulkab saw his effort go into the visitors net to put Racing 1 - 0 up in the first minute. Nico Garcia for Racing was causing havoc for the Crevillente defence and he was awarded a free kick just out side the area after being brought down. Racings Glen Lawton took the free kick which curled round the Crevillente keeper on 5 minutes to take a 2 - 0 advantage. Racing totally dominated the game with amazing control of the ball and movement off the ball when in possession. It took 24 minutes for Crevillente to finally have an attack on the Racing goal and to their credit they converted their first oppotunity to bring the

score 2 - 1. Injury to Said Boulkab saw him replaced by Gudmundur Gudmundsson who within a minute with some amazing ball control and skill struck an inch perfect shot into the Crevillente net and put Racing into a half time lead 3 - 1. Second half saw the Racing players stop Crevillente playing the ball out from the back by pushing up and pressuring the defence. 47 minutes Glen Lawton got the reward by doing this and gaining possession of the ball deep in the visitors half and adding a second goal for himself and now Racing were in cruise control. With the incredible Their football was just unplayable for Crevillente who became spectators to the silky smooth fast passing and movement from the Racing players. Sam Broadway got himself onto the score sheet when his strike on goal smashed the net to put Racing 5 - 1 up and give the points to Racing despite in the final 5 minutes Crevillente being awarded a consolation penalty to end the game 5 - 2 to the leagues new boys Racing. CONFIDENT WIN FOR FC TORRY FC TORREVIJA......2 PATERNA CF ..........0 First half goals from Rafa and Pastor helped Torrevieja to victory over Paterna and closed of the gap with the Tercera’s top four. Rafa was on target with a simple tap in after the goal was opened up by Obele and then we saw a bullet of a shot from the edge of the box from Pastor which doubled the Torry lead less than midway through the opening half. The visitors had hardly been in the game and with 4 points from their last 2 outings the home side went into this fixture in a confident mood. The recently promoted Paterna, however, were only a shadow of the side that we would expect from their 7th place league position. With Obele once again preferred to Rafa Gomez up front it was a cautious start with little of note during the opening few minutes but as the home side began to find their feet the football began to flow and the chances began to emerge. On 16 minutes Pastor fed through Obele who’s shot was turned around the post by Angel. Torry threw everything forward for the corner and were rewarded with the opening goal when Obele flicked the ball on to Rafa who had a simple tap in at the near post. Buoyed by their early success Torry pushed forward and just 2 minutes later they had doubled their lead with Pastors drive from the edge of the box. Dani Lucas then went close from a tight angle, before Pastor was blatantly pulled down in the box on 25 minutes. As the assistant confirmed the foul it was incredible to see the referee wave play on. What had seemed a clear cut decision had been over ruled for reasons known only to himself. Torry continued to dominate and really could have had the game sewn up by the interval but as they trooped off at half time it had been a decent performance that we all thought would surely bring more goals during the second period. As is often the case though the 2nd period proved to be a completely different affair as Torry sat back on their lead. Paterna went close through Jorge and Jara and Carrion pulled off one absolutely fabulous save from Nacho late in the game. However, a fair result which sees Torry in good form going into two games in 7 days. On Weds they travel to lowly Villarreal who are currently struggling just above the zone and then next Sunday they are once again at home, a real test though in a 6pm ko, against 3rd placed Jove Espanol.

HORADADA IN 7TH HEAVEN In the Preferente it was goals galore for Horadada who thumped El Campello by 7-0. Goals from Abraham (3), Titi (2) and Robles (2) saw the Reds achieve their best result for years lifting them into the playoff places for the first time this season. Almoradi were surprisingly beaten 3-2 by Crevillente while 2nd placed Thader were held to a 2-2 home draw by 4th placed Aspe
