BUDGET APPROVED FOR ORIHUELA SCHOOL The enforced cessation of work to build a new secondary school on the Orihuela Costa has officially been lifted by the regional government, according to a statement by the Orihuela Partido Popular. In a meeting in Alicante attended by local PP leaders Pepa Ferrando and David Costa, accompanied by the former mayor or the munici-

pality, M贸nica Lorente, the Regional directorate of education confirmed that the work to complete the new school can now be put to tender, following the bankruptcy of the original building firm, which will mean that it is only a matter of time before students being educated in inferior and crammed portacabins will be relocated to a new, state of the art, educational building. The education department stated that this work is included in the regional budgets for 2014, announced by the president of the Generalitat, Continued on Page 2

Continued from Page One Alberto Fabra. Pepa Ferrando from the PP said that this announcement guarantees the funds to resume construction of the institute of the coast after months of cessation of work, and that the next stage is to tender the work in order for companies to bid to complete the project. Ferrando also stated that the 2014 regional budget also includes funding for the Virgen del Camino School. In their statement, Ferrando also pointed out that the party are still working on the issues that are “important to the citizens”, whilst emphasising that as the reason for their insistence on locally funding the Rabaloche Health Centre construction, which is also the responsibility at a regional level, and how the schools are important because “now is the time for education”, whilst emphasising the commitments of the Generalitat Valenciana. As reported on numerous previous occasions, the local government team have been trying to get answers as to when the funding would be granted and the projects completed, but their requests have been all but ignored by the regional board. However, the local PP group consider that the bipartite team had “left these issues to one side “, and so they have “taken the reins from the opposition to get ahead with their goals in education”.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT AXE PASSES FIRST HURDLE The President President of FEMP, FEMP, who is also the Partido Popular´s serving mayor of Santander, Santander, Íñigo de la Ser na

The intentions of the Spanish government to bring the hatchet to local authorities has passed its first landmark step this week, with the approval of the Federación Española de Municipios y Provincias, or FEMP, the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, but with the rejection of the political opposition groups, with the plan to reorganise the skills, services, templates and salaries in the municipalities, with the intention of saving 7 billion euro between the entry into law and the end of the legislature. The draft bill on rationalization and sustainability of the local administration met with considerable opposition, when it was proposed that many smaller administrations would be

swallowed up, thus removing the local control and administration, but saving in terms of contracted rates for services shared by larger areas, as well as salary savings from the removal of smaller council members. Principal opposition arguments saw the reduction in the political apparatus as expansion of services as leading the way towards privatisation, with other regions objecting to being absorbed into a political field that may have gone against their own independence. However, for the past year, the Government has been in negotiations with FEMP, representing the institutions concerned, although it should also be pointed out that the majority members of the federation are also serving politicians from the Partido Popular who are pushing for the reform. The President of FEMP, who is

also the Partido Popular´s serving mayor of Santander, Íñigo de la Serna, as well as the mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella, also of the Partido Popular and wife of a former President of the Government from 1996 to 2004, José María Aznar, attended parliament to show their support for the reforms, which will result in the removal of thousands of local council positions, but claims to maintain the services, in fact improving them for some of the smaller areas, capping wages for councillors and the number of people who can be hired, as well demanding full transparency and supervised accounts of all future local governments. The government had sought an agreement with the PSOE on the reform in the first months of the legislature, but those talks were abandoned in January, because, according to the PP, the socialist members refused to reduce the number of councillors and were not prepared to negotiate on that fundamental factor of the change. According to the PSOE, they are against the reforms because they are adamant that pooling municipal services would reduce the quality and provision of services, with a detriment that would be felt at ground level.

BODY OF UNKNOWN SOLDIER EXHUMED Almost coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the Batalla del Levante, when in July, 1938, a fierce battle was fought as a result of the offensive by Francoist troops to capture Valencia and Levante, Valencia until then having been the capital of the Republic and was one of the main ports of Republican Spain, the body of an unknown soldier was this week exhumed from his grave in El Toro, a municipality in Castellón, Valencia, along with several rounds of ammunition still found at his side, with his knapsack and several uniform buttons still intact. According to archaeologists, the body is of a young man whose skeletal remains have appeared almost completely facing upwards and with arms folded toward his head. Archaeologist Miguel Mezquida, the director of the operation, explained that “the man was located very quickly and has now been completely removed”, which has been of “great satisfaction, for the team and for volunteers and residents of El Toro that have been guiding us in finding and dimensioning of the area”. The remains were found in Puntal de Magañá where, Mezquida says, “there are likely to be many more remains of soldiers killed during the Civil War”. Following the discovery, the team from GRMH Valencia, following the protocol of the Law of Historical Memory, with the approval of both the Guardia Civil and the Judicial Police, who were at the scene to attest that the body belonged a soldier and thus be able to proceed with the exhumation. During the day on Friday, the team extended the site slightly and discovered more bones, which they believe could belong to another skeleton.

WE NEED YOUR HELP T O FEED THE NEEDY

In a tear- jerking and desperate presentation in Almoradí this week, the Cruz Roja announced that they had run out of money to help them deliver food to the needy, as the demand for assistance has exhausted their funds. The President of the local Cruz Roja group, José Naranjo, revealed that they have been serving more than 200 families, twice per week, but this has left them with no more resources to continue. Naranjo said with regret that for the first time this year, "we had to tell people who have come looking for help that there is no food”. In addition to the Cruz Roja, the Cáritas charity are also serving around 200 families and the Department of Social Welfare has asked if they can assist in providing assistance, whilst hopefully avoiding a duplication of claims. In our provincial capital of Alicante, the Cruz Roja had 542 registered families under their care during 2012, and with that figure, the association estimated a rise to 650 for 2013. However, in the first six months of the year, they had already surpassed that figure, with 708 families regis-

tered as regularly needing handouts. Cáritas had already revealed some 3 million people in Spain are living below the poverty line, with around 300 euro per month for their entire family. But that figure didn´t include homeless in this area, whom the Valencian Institute of Statistics revealed to be around 3,000 people, but that figure was a 2008 estimate, so likely to be well below the current reality. Nationally, there are an estimated 23,000 homeless people in Spain, according to a 2012 survey by the National Statistics Institute. With all of these harrowing figures in mind, The Leader and Exite Radio has decided to bring forward our annual collection of food for the needy, and we have decided to launch this year´s campaign immediately. As in previous years, we are now asking for your help. After every campaign so far we have been overwhelmed by your generosity, so we hope that you will once again join us in trying to help those in need. From now on, our offices in Los Dolces will be a central collection point for food, with other drop off points added in the coming

weeks, and we are looking for dry food, tins, cans, packets, cartons, in fact anything that has a long use-by date, all of which will go directly to those in need. Again, as in previous years, we are also asking for help for the extended family too, with dog and cat food welcome, so as those families with pets are also able to keep their trusty friends with them through the crisis. We will be collecting the items from now through to Christmas and will then distribute the food to local charities along the Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja and the immediately surrounding areas, so you are sure that every item you donate will go directly to help somebody in need. A cliché it may be, this kind of campaign really is summed up by three simple words, because no matter how much or how little you can give, and we all know there are many people struggling through the hardships of life, in this case, it really is true to say that “Every little helps”.

SPAIN NATIONAL NEWS Amnesty International, the Association of Gay and Lesbian (ACEGAL) and other social institutions explained the actions to be undertaken following the death of businessman Juan Andrés Benítez, who died last May in police custody. Having being detained following an altercation, the forensic examination revealed that Benítez had broken a tooth, cheekbone, nose and eyebrows, had injuries on the lips, a knock on the head and on the front right of the face as well as a fracture of the right metacarpal . Also had lesions in the arms, legs, knees and lower back. The autopsy states that all those injuries are compatible with “punching or kicking”, however it has not yet been confirmed whether the injuries were caused my himself, in the incident the police were called to, or whilst being restrained.

The Spanish traffic department are intending to launch a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of older cars, by focussing on the safety benefits included in new vehicles. Meanwhile, they have also provided an additional 70 million euro into the “Plan PIVE 3”, which provides subsidy to car owners who trade in an older car for a new one. Responding to a question in parliament from UPyD representative Rosa Díez, the Spanish government has revealed that a total of 2,529 retired Guardia Civil officers are in possession of “Type B” firearms licenses, which allows these former officers to hold and use pistols and revolvers. The government has also admitted that there is no requirement for these holders of weapons to submit to target practice and assessment, in the same way that active officers have to prove their capability at least every two years, or annually in the case of officers holding administrative roles. Levert, mixed with a melodic European influence. The new songs on the album show a definite step forward in style. "The whole purpose of putting the new songs on the album is to show people that we're not just banking off the old songs, which have been re-recorded anyway" says Keith Wilder. Based in the UK and the USA the band love the spontaneity of playing live and are currently touring worldwide. So what more could you ask for? Well how about a support act including one of Britain’s best loved comedians, Mick Miller. Mick combines his acting with his cabaret performances, his after dinner comedy and cruise work. He is very much in demand with the major cruise lines as he is happy working to American as well as British audiences, which makes him the perfect comedian. He flies many thousands of miles entertaining thousands of people every year, and he loves doing it. Heatwave are currently touring with Alexander O’Neal as well as Aswad and Rose Royce. LITTER, LITTER EVERYWHERE! Orihuela Costa should be a beautiful, tranquil place to live or to enjoy a holiday home near the coast. It has the basics for an idyllic environment, miles of varied coastline, sandy, picturesque beaches, great, sunny weather, blue skies and blue / grey sea. Many home owners have also contributed to greening the environment by planting palms, different varieties of trees and typical, flowering Mediterranean plants. Some of the urbanisations also have landscaped gardens that contrast with the white houses with their coloured roof tiles. What a shame this potentially pleasant environment is spoiled and disgraced by the low level of cleanliness and the proliferation of litter marring virtually every urbanisation and open space. The pearl of Orihuela Costa must be the coastline and beaches. The hoards of holiday makers that flood to region during the summer months flock to the beaches daily during their vacations. These tourists, who contribute greatly to the economy of Orihuela, must feel disgusted by the inadequate litter facilities encountered on the beaches throughout the locality. Every day during the peak tourist months beach litter bins overflow, bags of rubbish pile up by the side of the inadequate number of receptacles and even a small gust of wind results in paper and plastics

being blown about. Surely those responsible for refuge collection must have some idea that additional receptacles are required during the busy summer months and the cost of providing these must surely be cheaper than cleaning up mountains of rubbish in flimsy plastic bags. The parts of the unfinished coastal walkway that are serviceable are similarly disfigured by overfull litter bins, discarded cigarette butts and chewing gum, not to mention dog mess that thoughtless owners fail to clean up. Litter from the Thursday morning market regularly gets blown about often ending up caught in the rocks and vegetation alongside the beach. The cleaning service that cleans up the roads where the market takes place totally fails to clean up the paper and plastics that flown onto the rocks. Parks and open spaces are also disfigured by litter. Many of the barrancos and undeveloped open spaces are covered in litter of every description. Virtually every road has litter along the gutters; wild verges are full of every type of rubbish imaginable. The N332 is strewn with rubbish along its length as it transverses Orihuela Costa giving a dreadful image to resident, motorist and visitor alike. Basically the whole area is one large litter tip and the occasional street cleaning service totally fails to make an impact on improving the dreadful mess.

Recently there was an imitative by Orihuela Town Hall for the Costa residents to participate in cleaning up the beaches in exchange for a plate of paella! This only proves that this service is needed and should be provided as part of the on going environment cleaning service. It amazes me that after the large Saturday market at Playa Flamenca that the street cleaners come out in force and in fact excellently clean the roads where the market is held, but it totally fails to clean the surrounding streets that also get strewn with market rubbish. What puzzles me is why these same street cleaners are not working daily to keep the environment clean and litter free. The contrast in cleanliness of Orihuela City and the coast is striking. Road sweepers are out in

force daily ensuring the city is a litter free environment. It should be noted that Orihuela Costa residents pay more rates than those living in Orihuela City yet they receive a second class street cleaning service. As long as Costa residents fail to vote and return a sufficient number of councillors from our area the region will continue to be discriminated against. Sandpiper The population of Orihuela Costa need to ensure their voice is heard and the only way to achieve this is to ensure that residents are on the padron and the electoral register and they vote in local elections.

ORIHUEL A AND THE COST A NEWS R OUNDUP Work has commenced on clearing and cleaning a run-down park area of La Florida, which will shortly see town hall workers replacing some of the old and damaged features, such as football goal posts, as well as adding new elements such as fitness equipment and a ping pong table. In addition, the children´s play area will be renewed with safety flooring and fenced off, and an area specifically for dogs will be built, also fenced off, creating a multi-use area for leisure in this previously neglected area.

The campaign to sterilise cats in one area of the Orihuela Costa has continued since its launch, with over 30 felines now having been captured and transported by the Little Pod foundation, taken to an officially appointed vet for treatment, then returned to their homes without the future risk of population increases. The councillor for the cost, Martina Schreurer, once again prised the work of both the Little Pod Foundation and the vets of Asoka, for their invaluable assistance in the campaign. Street cleaning teams have commenced their major pre-winter clean of areas immediately around waste bins in the municipality and the Orihuela Costa, using jet washes to ensure the locations are thoroughly cleaned, in a job that will cover every dustbin in the municipality. The bins themselves will not be cleaned during this campaign, as that takes specialist equipment which is only available at certain times, but the operation will reduce smells, spoils, stains and unsightly marks on the roads and pavements near to residential areas.

The councillor for Town Planning, Antonio Zapata, has announced an agreement with the SUMA collection company to provide six inspectors who will focus on conducting a campaign of consolidating records to identify and correct municipal records, with a view to ensuring that all properties in the municipality are paying the required amount of tax for municipal services. In particular, the team will be looking at some of the villages around the municipality, where it is believed that a number of unregistered properties may be located, thus not paying any contribution to the municipal coffers, and a number of them are not paying an amount which is justifiable for the size of the property. So far this year the town hall has already identified 970 properties where no tax is being paid, which the inspectors believe will rise to 1,400 in the first quarter of 2014, although the end figure may identify double that number of properties who are not paying their tax. With an estimated 168.76 euro average per year due on each of those properties, that equates to potential revenue of between a quarter and a half a million euro per year that has not yet been collected. The Councillor of Culture, Antonia Moreno, announced that the ninth edition of Mercadearte held last Sunday in Orihuela was a huge success, having been visited by around 4,000 people, all enjoying around 100 stalls of artisan displays along the streets of the city, showing how the event has grown in strength since the inauguration in 2010, when there were just 32 exhibitors.

The conference on employment opportunities for workers of Orihuela has proved a huge success, with many of the municipality´s unemployed workers seeking help and advice on retraining in order to improve their chances of gaining employment. The councillor for employment, Manuel Gallud, praised the values of education and training, as it was revealed that up to half of the job seekers in the municipality may lack sufficient qualifications to be seen as a viable asset in the restrictive job market. In his opening speech, Gallud spoke of tough times but also of hope and the commitment of the town hall to do anything in their power to try to help the citizens of Orihuela in which it is important to recognise “the value of workers, the value of future generations, their education and training”. Part time auxiliary workers for the municipal cleaning department will see changes to their working hours implemented. Normally the staff are used to cover holidays, sickness and other extra activities, but now they will be used to extend the waste collection and cleaning into the weekend, especially focusing on commercial centres, which become particularly busy at these leisure rich times, but for which no cleaning provision had previously been provided.

MORE ROAD SPEED TRAPS PROMISED IN 2014 The Director General of the Spanish traffic department, María Seguí of the DGT, has appeared before a Congressional Committee to explain the budget for next year. The first explanation was that there will not be an increase in the number of fixed camera locations, but whilst detailing intentions to sanction more drivers for using mobile phones and speeding, Seguí explained that “The evolution is towards mobile cameras that allow us to manage secondary roads more effectively”, as these are the roads where most casualties occur. The commission spokesperson, Carlos Corcuera of the PSOE, asked about the increase in cameras, to which Seguí responded that “the network of fixed cameras is fairly well structured”, continuing to explain the intentions for the network to remain as it is. However, with a focus on mobile radars, the obvious questions became directed towards airborne speed traps, the infamous “Pegasus” helicopter based system, which may well see a greater increase in use.

From a total of 847 million euro that the DGT expects to receive in 2014, an increase of 0.2% on the 2013 budget, a total of 54% corresponds to taxes, whereas 45% will be obtained through fines and sanctions, meaning that the target for the Guardia Civil to take from motorists in the next year equates to nearly 400 million euro. “Our aim is the more efficient collection of penalties, preventing injustices, such as to violations by foreigners, but there is no desire or any guidelines that we require the issuing of more sanctions”, Seguí stated. As part of the overall budget, 103 million will be dedicated to investment, an increase of 2%, which will not only create more focused awareness campaigns, part of it will fund a new national database of accidents, the purchase of more mobile radar kits, replacing existing radars, and towards the renewal of the fleet of helicopters. The budget also includes 1.5 million euro towards research, the first time funds have been dedicated in this manner, which Seguí considers to be “a milestone in the management of the body”, as well as dedicating 450,000 euro in grants to accident associations.

MOTORISTS INSTALL CAMERAS TO COMBAT CRASH FOR CASH CLAIMS BY NICK IRELAND Motorists are catching on and installing video cameras in their cars to combat ‘crash for cash’ fraud claims. The devices, known as ‘dash-cams, record the view through the windscreen and capture events before, during and after a collision. The recorded footage can also be used by defendants against accusations of lane-hogging or tailgating on motorways following new fixed penalty legislation which came into force in the UK in August and could be an invaluable video record to have if you happen to be accused of using a mobile phone or speeding, when you have not, by Trafico! They are a difficult item to find in store but readily available on line however help is at hand as UK motoring accessory giant Halfords has introduced new range of in-car camera products in response to this growing demand, making the technology that has been widely used by the emergency services for many years, accessible to all motorists who want to film their journeys for protection. The insurance fraud bureau estimates around 30,000 ‘crash for cash’ incidents take place in the UK every year, costing insurers around £350 million and pushing up premiums for honest, innocent drivers by around £44 each. A new tactic that is being used by increasingly bold fraudsters has also emerged this year. As previously reported in the Leader, they flash their headlights to give victims the impression they are being allowed to join a main road but then accelerate in order to hit the unsuspecting driver side-on. Halfords in-car technology manager Alec James said: “Following an incident, people are often reluctant to admit guilt and risk losing their no claims discount. In addition, the surge in fraudulent so-called ‘crash for cash’ claims is causing genuine concern among innocent drivers. The range of recording devices we now offer means that we can provide drivers with the means to produce evidence of how an incident occurred and who is at fault should the need arise.” The three Nextbase in-car cameras range in price from £69.99 for the Nextbase 202 Lite to £99.99 for the Nextbase 302G Deluxe and £149.99 for the Nextbase 402G Professional. The new in-car cameras are available in stores as well as on line at www.halfords.com

THE LAUNCH OF THE RBL POPPY APPEAL www.britishlegion.org.uk/counties/spain-north This year Benidorm hosted the annual Launch of the Poppy Appeal in eastern Spain. The area around the Rincon de Loix thronged with residents and holiday makers of all nationalities. The parade consisted of Standards from many Legion Branches, together with other military organisations, two Chelsea Pensioners – here in Spain for this occasion - a contingent of Dutch Veterans and Spanish paratroopers, all led by the colourful Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. Also marching were Legion members and friends making this a truly International event. A stage had been erected in the Rincon with chairs for the hundreds who heard from Mr Paul Rodwell, British Consul in Alicante and District President, Mr Chris Wyatt, District Chairman, Mr Robin Hargrave, District Poppy Appeal Co-ordinator, Snr Agustin Navarro, Mayor of Benidorm and his Deputy Gema Amor. The playing of The Last Post and Reveille, by Bugler Ian Royle res-

onated around the Rincon – an emotional part of the proceedings when everyone remembered all those who had died or had been injured whilst serving their country. Paul Rodwell said “At a time when the British Consulate in Alicante focuses increasingly on the most vulnerable, it is of paramount importance that key charities are able to do likewise. Welfare is at the heart of The Royal British Legion and I am pleased as Consul and President of District North, that it continues to help brave men and women from our armed forces and their dependants. The constant growth in the Poppy Appeal which we are launching here today is testimony to the hard work of all the volunteers who collect the funds and the extraordinary generosity of those that live in and visit the Costa Blanca. Thank you all.” Chris Wyatt gave the background to the setting up of The Legion in 1921, the poppy being chosen as the emblem of the Charity because it was the one flower that had bloomed so prolifically among the battlefields. Chris said “The Legion spends over £1.7 million pounds a week on those who we look after, which is why I ask you to dig deep to fill our boxes with money Wear your Poppy with Pride and by doing so, make a difference to someone’s life. Here in Spain we support our beneficiaries in a vast number of ways, provision of stair lifts, mobility aids, hearing aids and then we give immediate needs grants to cover food and payment of bills like electricity – just a few of the ways we can give support.” The Mayor of Benidorm Snr Agustin Navarro welcomed everyone. “This is a town that maintains the best ties of friendship with the people from the UK. My congratulations and that of all our town for this day of remembrance and my request that your generosity is important to those who, in defence of the most important values of our society, stained many fields with blood and that sprouted so many poppies.” There then followed a presentation by Chris Wyatt to Snr Navarro of a plaque in recognition of the help and support shown by the Benidorm Ayuntamiento. Without this vital support the Launch in Benidorm could not have taken place. Check the Legion website for details of Remembrance Services and Branches in the area where poppies are available.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.

ESCAPE TO THE SUN I have recently been putting the finishing touches to my latest book for expats. Whilst reading it through for one last time before it is sent to the publishers, I realised that it was not written in quite the same buoyant tones as my earlier publications. It was written during a year of relative turmoil in the Canary Islands and Spain, as well as across the world. Increased concerns about unemployment levels of around one third of the working population in the islands for much of the year, the increasing impact of the banking crisis upon ordinary people, bankruptcies and home repossessions have all led to increasing uncertainty for both the local and expat population of the islands and much of Europe. The political situation has not been good either, with political uncertainties, scandals and ‘in-fighting’ within the ruling Partido Popular (Conservative) party, affecting the popularity and possible tenure of the Spanish Prime Minister. Even the once highly popular Spanish Royal family has come in for considerable criticism for unwise financial dealings from the usually acquiescent and respectful Spanish media. As I write this, the old chestnut surrounding the status of Gibraltar has raised its ugly head once again. Most observers agree that this is a regular ploy by both the Spanish and UK Governments during periods of internal discontent and unrest to focus the attention of the media and general population upon issues other than the economy, unemployment and unpopularity of the government. However, such issues are unsettling for both businesses and expats alike, and can cause needless concern and anxiety for all.

Building sites that were once identified as areas for smart new development for expat homes, shopping centres and offices remain silent, sale boards of both completed, as well as incomplete, properties abound. Many Spanish people have left the country for work elsewhere in Europe and beyond. In most towns and cities, there is an abundance of empty shops, bars, offices and homes, and the once bustling Costas are no longer the bustling areas that they once were. Looking back, it should not have come as such a surprise. Spain's economy, as well as that in many other countries, grew far too quickly to sustain, and the people behind the system grew both greedy and complacent. The bubble had to burst eventually, together with its disastrous consequences. The unpopular truth for political and economic commentators is that, despite support from the European Union, Spain is nowhere near a lost cause. In the last two years, Spanish manufacturers that traditionally focused upon home consumption have turned their attention to the global market. As a result, exports have reached a record high. Even the most jingoistic of commentators are beginning to realise that Spain has the capacity, ability and wherewithal to rectify its econom-

ic problems, and is not another Greece or Portugal as was popular opinion a short time ago. The European Union is not a popular concept in the UK. I doubt it ever will be, and there is a possibility that the UK may leave it in the future, or be part of some other formation that will accommodate its unique and distorted perspective of the continent, and ease it finally and painfully from the days of Empire to a modern state working within and being a true part of a united Europe. However, as it currently stands, the EU has been a true blessing, for it has provided the opportunity for anyone to live and work in any other EU country, without visas and work permits, which was unimaginable forty years ago. So where does this leave the expat in Europe? Well, it is true that there is now greater uncertainty about the future than I have known for many years. However, I am and always have been an optimist and I have little time for the cynical “my glass is half empty” brigade that appears to be the most damaging part of the modern current psyche. People will always have dreams and passions, for that is the true essence of the human condition. For some, this may mean a larger home, a new car, or climbing a mountain. For many others, like myself, it is the dream of a new life, new experiences, new cultures, the opportunity to experience, taste and smell the excitement in a place that is of our own choosing and not merely based upon an accident of birth. For many, the dreams will be of a less stressful life, an opportunity to be challenged by new experiences, new and exciting work opportunities, a place where there is a high quality of life in which a young family may grow. For others, it may be the dream of a carefree, long, happy and healthy retirement, but for all it is an ‘Escape to the Sun’. AROMATHERAPY AND OUR HANDS BY PENNY WING

Most of us women look after our faces and some of us work out at the gym in an effort to look younger but if you don’t look after your hands they will give your age away! Essential oils can help to keep your hands looking their best. You can add a few drops of your favourite oil to your regular hand cream or better still make a cream from scratch. Oils good for dry hands include Rose, Geranium, Sandalwood and Patchouli. Oils for neglected hands include Rose, Lemon, Geranium or Patchouli. If you have a cut or graze you could use the following anti septic oils such as Lavender, Rosemary, Lemon or Lime. Nails To have good strong healthy nails you have to attend not only to the part of the nail that we cut (the free edge), but also to the nail bed or cuticle. Many physical conditions show up in the nails as ridges or thickening, including arthritic and rheumatoid conditions in which the nails thicken and become distorted. Oils to stimulate strong, healthy nail growth include Lemon, Lavender, Grapefruit or Rosemary. As an alternative you could massage the nails with a carrier oil such as Almond or Grapeseed. If you want to soften your cuticles make up the following blend: 5ml Jojoba oil, 5 drops Carrot oil and 2 drops of Eucalyptus Peppermint and massage well into the cuticle every day. If you are unfortunate to get a nail infection make up the following blend and massage around the nail bed three times a day: 10 drops of Tea Tree, 5 drops of Lavender in 15 ml of vegetable oil. Oil Safety Lemon – do not use on skin before sunbathing, may cause irritation, use in moderation. Patchouli – overuse can cause a loss of appetite, insomnia and nervous attacks. TAKE THE FEAR OUT OF DENTISTRY WITH GERHARD NAGEL I read on Facebook this week that a friend needed a visit to the dentist. The stress and worry that the possibility of the impending meeting raised comments like “my stomach is churning” and “wish me luck”, to which the considerate readers obviously replied. But, once the appointment was over, the work had been done, the “patient” had returned alive, well and free from the pain that had prompted the initial concern. Some of us may have had a bad experience in the past, but most of us simply fear the dentist as that is a more natural reaction that enjoying the treatment, although it is usually without justification. Modern dentistry has changed. Just ask anybody who has had work done recently. Ask if there was actually anything “real” to fear. The answer is invariably “no”. Modern dentist offer a warm and welcoming environment and with the most modern precision equipment, that as soon as you walk into a dentist´s office, you feel comfortable, welcome and your fears are eased. The Gerhard Nagel clinic at La Zenia is one such place. Having been established on the Costa Blanca since 1997, and one of the first practices in the country to offer high quality cosmetic dentistry, the experience and knowledge of the team behind the surgery has grown since their initial opening, keeping up to date with the most modern practices and equipment, to ensure that they have always maintained the highest standards of dental care available, with the overall aim of looking after your oral wellbeing, whether it be cosmetic or restorative. Their expertise in building smiles changes lives; quite literally, as they use their artistic approach to fully assess every individual mouth, from every conceivable angle, to ensure that any work carried out fits your own facial features. Even a language barrier is not a problem, as the staff speak a host of languages, including English, Spanish and German, which has enabled them to build up a big international clientele. Isabel, will help you arrange an appointment. If anyone has an emergency, the

staff will do their utmost to fit you in that same day. The clinic has its own laboratory, so work such as repairs to dentures or moulding of teeth, are done very quickly. They also have a panoramic X-ray machine, which enables them to get a very accurate picture of your whole mouth. The clinic is used to dealing with holiday makers too, and will do fillings and bridges etc. at the drop of a hat. Specialist services, such as teeth whitening or cosmetic surgery, are also available. Children are welcome to come for check ups and pain free treatment. The clinic prides itself on prompt service. No more long waits for something you need now. However, with all of this said, with the reality of an open mind that tells us there is nothing to fear, even if you still have doubts, or if you have a phobia about visiting the dentist, Nagel’s can, in special situations, bring in a qualified anaesthetist, who will knock you out completely, to enable the dentist to do the necessary work. When you come to, you will be ready to go home. The anaesthetist will remain present throughout the whole operation.

Booking is recommended, but not always necessary. The opening times are 9am to 3pm. Phone 966 73 0058 or 607 821 433.

ABBEY ANGLING MATCH FISHING

By Terry Screen We fished this week’s 7th round match of the Winter League on the river Segura at Murcia on the 15th October. Although it was probably passable under the bridge, fortunately we managed to peg everyone below the bridge and the water had a steady flow but is still a funny colour and not fishing to its potential for the time of year with anglers struggling for bites. To make matters worse we were half way through the match when a large track machine turned up to begin cutting the weeds down, after a bit of arm waving and shouting the Police turned up and after examining all our paperwork, which they found to be in order they advised the weed cutters to wait until the match was finished before they began. I was talking to the driver of the cutter after the match and he said the machine was going through to Rojales and Guardamar as well. 1st Stan (The Man) Roberts with 13.540kgs fishing the pole using bread 2nd Doug (The Welsh Gold miner) Hornblow with 12.970kgs fishing the pole using pellet 3rd Terry (Swing em) Screen with 11.770kgs fishing the feeder using bread All details are available on our website www.abbeyangling.com or from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 965 32 8368

180s: Joe Miller (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury, Patrick Abrams (Meerkats), Sid Cross (Hattons Hunks), Mark Filer (Busters) Highest finish: John Eyre (Meerkats) 100 Busters continue their move to the top, taking over second spot from the Eagles after their draw to the Hyenas, their highest position since joining the league 3 years ago. They pose a real threat to the Meerkats, Eagles and Hyenas. The top four all remain unbeaten but how long will it last? A predictable finish for the top match of the week, an excellent home draw for the Hyenas, although Que Pasa will look upon the match as a point lost, considering they were 6-4 up with 2 to play. All credit though to the Hyenas and particularly Lee Holtham who saved the match and a point with a fine display of darts under pressure, against a formidable opponent in Jim Storey. 2 tons, 2x80 pluses and finally 2 darts to take out D12, was just what captain Simon Williams ordered from his last man. The game was level at half time and then Eagles Kevin Wood and John Walker, opened a two leg advantage for the visitors. Shaun Smith´s 85,140,81 wasn’t enough as Wood replied with 125 and 85 setting up the double which was converted first attempt. Walker did the same on D14 against an out of sorts Andy Brooker. In times of crisis and at 3-5 down who better to turn to than the ¨Needle¨ Joe Miller to redress the situation. Opponent Den Hall had the throw but just couldn’t shrug off the Needle who won the point after 85,90,100 and D16. 4-5. Recent signing Cyril Harrison missed numerous opportunities which allowed a steady performance from Jim Waddell to gain the draw for the Eagles. In a real nail biter anoth-

er new Hyena Martin Lewis just edged out Stuart Clark to set up the Holtham, Storey finale. Both teams remain unbeaten although the Eagles have relinquished their 100% record but will still be looking for honours next May. Top of the table Meerkats made the very short journey to the Tavern who are now settling down in their first foray into league darts. Their excellent throw is matched by the superb and plentiful half time cuisine that even Meerkat Alex Nikolov couldn’t polish off. Unfortunately the Taverners couldn’t match the quality of the chef´s fayre and found themselves 0-6 down at half time. The home side faced a very strong Meerkat 6 man singles with current hot shot Patrick Abrams on first. The Meerkat was straight in to his prolific scoring mode with 140 and 2x100. His unfazed opponent Del Lister just plodded on and on until Abrams was near collapse trying to hit a double. Lister, realising the Meerkat was never going to finish planted his perfectly aimed arrow into D6 for an unexpected victory. Lee Maiden reversed the trend against Sean Farrell for the match hitting 100 and D18 before John Eyre succumbed to Taverner Ivan Jones. Nikolov had the pleasure of taking on Tilly Gariaa next and showed no sympathy hitting 100,124 and D7 against the popular licensee. Mike Snow, taking over as captain next week, showed how its done taking the last single and third leg for his side. The Meerkats remain top with 100% record whilst the Taverners remain mid table. Porterhouse entertained the Kings from Pint Depot hoping to narrow the gap on the top four and narrow they did with just the one point however, from a spirited effort against a determined Pint Depot. A high scoring match ended with shared spoils and handshakes all round. Porterhouse outscored the visitors in the first but developed double trouble when it mattered. Eddie Fozzard got the Kings off the hook with D4 to take the first leg. The next three went the Porters way via Peter Ayres D5 and Ray Hayes D18 and D8. Fozzard paired with Matt Cummins in the second doubles and really blitzed the treble, Fozzard ending the leg on D6. Ayres figured prominently in the sixth leg hitting 100,60 and 73 out (T19,D8) for a 4-2 half time lead and the expectancy of both points. Not so, Ian Sleath faced an in form Yvonne Rouffignac and registered an 81 followed by a 140. Despite some decent replies from the Porter, King Ian planted his arrow in D9 for the victory. Ray Sanderson D10 played his usual captain´s role to take out D10 for 5-3. Fozzard figured once again in a high scoring match with Ray Hayes, both scoring tons in a tight match. Fozzard finished the leg on D4 and Cummins made it 5 apiece against the sprightly Ayres. Brian Nash ensured a point for the Porters despite some great scoring from Gary Minor. It was left to Sue Sanderson to take both points against John Broadhead, but splitting the 11s is not a good thing to do when the pressure is on and the Kings took full advantage with D9 for shared points. Nash recorded a fine maximum, unfortunately it was in practice, but nevertheless shows he can do it. I expect to see it next week Mr. Nash! The Royal family, or the Pint Depot Queens if you prefer, were looking for their first point of the season against La Zenia´s Gogarty´s, masterminded this season by Gail Todd. The recently married Debbie and Dave Wright are currently donning their finery at the Infinity Pool

Bar, Marine Bay Sands, Singapore and are emailing their scores appropriately. They however didn’t help too much, as two legs were all the Queens could muster and they remain firmly bottom. Yet again double opportunities were missed with Gogarty´s grateful of the chance to leap two places up the table. The Queens found themselves 1-5 down at the break with the Royals only point coming from the sometimes steady hand of Marie Dunne D5. This leg was probably the best of the night with great scoring from Queen Lynn Fozzard and Gogarty´s Elaine Willis and Brian Newton. Kevin Prockter enjoyed a superb third double scoring 98,81 and D8 for 1-5 despite Queen Ann Griffiths 109. Dunne continued her form against the aptly named Bliss Wright with a win on D1, Wright not converting her high scoring into the all important double. Captain Gail Todd ensured the point for the visitors, John Linton gaining both points with a victory over Lynn Fozzard. The remaining legs all went Gogarty´s way for this season´s second triumph for the La Zenia outfit. Busters second place is well deserved, they remain unbeaten with several players enjoying superb consistency. Their main man Mark Filer was at it again this week scoring a maximum plus 4x100. He was ably supported by Ray Harvey 100,132, Paul Dowinton 125, Will Drummond 100 and captain Shirley Roberts (Mark´s other half) 127,128. A convincing win leaving the Hunks in sixth place, but moving Busters into a threatening position, for those aspiring to silverware. Honeys made the journey to the Los Dolses Madigans bar and came away with a precious point. Ashley McCulloch made her debut for mum´s team (Julie) and duly recorded a 127. Phil De Lacy not to be outdone recorded 2x100 and a fine 78 out (T20,D9). Tracey Simpson ensured the match by setting up a D7 finish with a 112. The Hunks play the Honeys on Halloween, you couldn’t plan it could you, the theme being Witches and Devils. Havent a clue who is who but should be a great night. The Breakaways Bears enjoyed a totally unsympathetic victory over the Pirates leaving them pointless but not however bottom, just on leg difference. The Bears opened with a winning team game Mike Smith 100 and John Lane 121 top scoring. Lane 100 paired with better half Michelle who finished their doubles with a three dart out. Susan Wiles enjoyed three game shots, while Jay Sharp had an excellent singles, 2x100 and D16. Mel Dawson hit the highest score of the night with a 132, plus a D5 single. We wish the Lane family well after spending all day on Thursday last at hospital after their son had broken a collar bone skateboarding of all things. Michelle, teach him to play darts, it’s a lot safer! A good win for the Bears who move up one place. Exite Radio Nominations this week: Team OT Week: Hyenas, Pint Depot Kings, Busters Player OT Wk. Girls – Shirley Roberts, Susan Wiles, Cynthia Jevons Boys - Mark Filer, Lee Holtham, Pat Abrams, Alex Nikolov, Eddie Fozzard, Phil De Lacy. EMERALD ISLE BOWLS CLUB After the successful European Championships, a big thank you to the many people who worked very hard for weeks before, and during, and also to the 'Controller' up above who gave us beautiful weather. England went away with the Cup, Spain and Scotland with Medals and thank you to all the Countries who made the journey, contributing towards the huge success of the event. A huge crowd saw the closing ceremony and, for some, the lure of the swimming pool proved too good to miss and they took the plunge, fully clothed!

SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB WINTER LEAGUE Wednesday 16th October, was an early start for the Winter league, playing their first away game of the season, at Finca Guila. It was a relatively nervous encounter, after the poor result we had there, the previous year, but we all seemed in good spirits and up for the challenge that lie ahead. In summer like conditions, indeed hot conditions for mid October, the games got under way, and were all very close in the early stages, but then, San Miguel started to move forward on three of the rinks, leaving the other two rinks fighting, against tough opposition, for any of the points. In the end,

By Bill Allen

On 15 October the Highjackers visited us for our monthly 'battle'. All eight rinks were used and two rinks were very close with only one shot difference. However, the final result was victory for the Highjackers with a shot difference of 147 to EI's 132. Liz Page, Trevor Culpin and yours truly (Bill Allen) won the money so I've decided to buy a boat - well, I need something to play with in the bath! Bryan, Dave & Ken won for the Highjackers. As usual, we all enjoyed the game and good company. by Janet Thomas

San Miguel shots were 105 to Finca Guila's 65, giving us an 8-4 victory, against strong opposition. We all shared a lovely meal afterwards, so a good day in all, was had by everyone, and well done! Many thanks for our travelling supporters. SOUTHERN LEAGUE JAGUARS played away to MONTEMAR MATADOR Unfortunately we lost 6-8 in our first game of the season but I am sure we will turn it around next week. Any info on San Miguel Bowls Club please contact club president Eileen Potts 966 73 0376

EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB A good day to start the new season and a little rust in the joints to clear, but although playing reasonably well at home with all the rinks close for the Raiders, we were beaten by 5 rinks to 1. But the company provided by Vistabella Conquistadors was as always great and we did show good promise for the forthcoming season. Terry Buswell, Richard Needham and Shirley Edwards 13-15. Barbara Jones, Mick Ager and Carolyn Harris 11-18. John Cleal, Mike Barnett and John Featherstone 15-11. Graham Day, Ron Edwards and Geoff Wright 14-21. Edward Elsam, Graham Hicks and Geoff Jones 18-19. Maxine

Wright, Malc Elmore and Malc Sykes 14-17. The Mustangs were away to Horadada Royals and put up a good performance in taking 2 rinks and drawing a third, never a bad result away from home. Christine Wildman, John Newell and Mike Smith 21-21. Irene Thomson, Jim Gracie and Stewart Hamill 10-23. June Whitworth, Merv Armstrong and John Donovan 24-15. Marianne Holtham, Roy Wildman and David Whitworth 21-18. Anne Stone, Alec Morrice and Irene Mangan 12-19. Brian Taylor, Beryl Styring and Les Styring 14-16. Sponsored by Caser. DOUBLE WIN FOR FORD-DUNN BROTHERS IN ALICANTE Both the Ford-Dunn brothers were in dominant form at last weekends 4th round of the Spanish Supermoto championship held at Villena, Alicante. The British brothers who live in Murcia had been training hard over the summer to make sure they were in top form for the final rounds of the season, and it showed with both qualifying in 2nd posn in their respective classes giving them each a front row starting position. Anthony was the first to race in the prestigious SM Open class and secured the overall win for the day by taking a win and two second positions from his three races, beating the reigning Spanish champion Francesca Cucharera and former Spanish champion Israel Escalera. Anthony’s last race was gripping as he fought through to 2nd position after a bad start that gave him enough points to take the overall victory. Next out was older brother Mat who was racing in the SM Master 35 class. Mat finished a close 2nd in his first race and knew that to take the overall win and maintain his championship lead then a win in the 2nd race was the only option. Before Mat had even lined up on the grid for the second race he was in trouble as the toll of racing in 30 degrees of heat on a rough track had given him chronic cramps in his arms and legs that made racing impossible. The start of the race was

delayed slightly whilst mat was fed salt on the grid until the cramps subsided and racing could start. Once the race started Mat found himself in third position with some work to do to get to the front, but he did just that with an outstanding effort that saw him dive down the inside of the leader to take the lead and the win on the last corner of the last lap. The 2-1 result gave him the overall win and both brothers stood on the top step of the podium at the end of the days racing. Team Sponsor Shane Stratton from Stratton Motorsports had flown in to watch the days racing and was delighted with the double victory and the possibility of clinching the SM Master championship at the forth coming Albaida race. With Mat now holding a 20 point lead in the SM Master 35 Spanish championship, he now has it all to play for in the final round of the Spanish championship to be held at Albaida, Alicante on the 2nd and 3rd November. The Supermotoland Team and their sponsors, Advance Moves International Removals and Stratton Motorsports, will welcome anyone attending the event to support the brothers in their final race of the season to take championship honors. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. GOLF SOCIETY HANDICAPS Having lived and played golf here on the Costa Blanca for 10 years the biggest common theme amongst golf societies is handicaps. Due to the fact that the golf courses here in Spain don’t offer full memberships that include social events, handicapping and competitions there is a dearth of golf societies here on the Costa Blanca with hard working organisers trying to please up to 50 people with differing views and those society members with the biggest mouths and loudest voices are the least likely to actually assist in the operation and function of the society in any way. The most contentious of issues nearly always revolves around society handicaps. Unfortunately as the Spanish Golf Federation show little to no interest in the matter golf handicap secretaries are left to try and operate a system fair to all. The problem in this are is that many members cross pollinate across golf societies and many have a different handicap with each giving the handicap secretary an almost impossible task. I recently had a heated discussion with a society member trying to play off a handicap 5 shots higher than his lowest with another group and he felt aggrieved when we would not play ball. Now there really is no long terms solution to this problem without the honesty and integrity of the players and when in such circumstances it is the responsibility of the player to notify the handicap secretary and to play off his lowest handicap with any other group or society. Seems too much like common sense! Well common sense is not too common it seems. The deals shown in the table are some of the best currently available to you. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number, below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. IN THE BUNKER WITH MICK THE GRIP

A BIRDS EYE VIEW of Velaa Private Island in the Indian Ocean. The Velaa Golf Academy, in collaboration with Jose Maria Olazabal, is being created in the Maldives, offering comprehensive golf tuition and the last word in luxury. This ‘Vacation of a Lifetime’ has been dreamed up by ‘Troon Golf,’ a Company which provides “incomparable golf experiences across the globe.” (They created Las Colinas incidentally.) The Academy is scheduled to open this year, if the island hasn’t sunk beneath the Indian Ocean. THE ‘EUROPEAN BEST FATHER & SON’ Golf Championship takes place at Valle del Este, Almeria, from 28th October to 3rd November. The 54 hole 2 ball better ball Stableford is competed for by fathers and sons with a maximum handicap of 24. The defending champions from last year are Graham Ruth (54) and his son James (27) from Devon. The pair snatched the British Father & Son Scratch Championship in a dramatic sudden death playoff and gained automatic entry to the European Final at the Lumine Golf Resort, Barcelona, where they won both handicap and scratch titles. There is no age limit, the youngest son last year was aged 10 and the oldest Dad aged 90! (Not a pair, presumably.) WAGGLING IS GOOD ! It’s official. Apparently standing still over the ball makes

you stiffen up and think too much, but the waggling motion with the wrists while keeping the hands steady and moving the clubhead back and forth allows the player to loosen up and develop a rhythm. Jason Duffner, a noted waggler, learned the technique by watching film footage of Ben Hogan. In those days players waggled their hickory clubs to try to compensate for the torque (twist) in the shaft. Clubs now have less torque but a waggle gives the player time to settle down. I’ll give it a go! THE SEVE TROPHY at St. Nom La Breteche in France saw Great Britain and Ireland defeated 15 – 13 by Continental Europe. There were some mutterings that top British players were conspicuous by their absence, but some would say the Seve trophy is more about testing future Ryder Cup players, building teams and future careers. Europe's top pros have to be thinking about the final weeks of the Race to Dubai in Turkey, the Middle East and China. They have become leading competitors and winners on the PGA Tour largely because Seve Ballesteros helped demolish the barriers. The pros are making the most of his legacy and, just like the great Spaniard, thrilling European fans along the way. It may be the best way to honour Seve’s memory. BRITAIN’S DAVID LYNN charged up the

leaderboard with a final round 63 to win the Portugal Masters at the Algarve’s Oceanico Victoria Course. Miguel Angel Jimenez, however, probably had just as big a smile on his face, after winning 100 bottles of wine for sinking an ace on the 168 yd 8th hole with his trusty 7 iron. TIGER WOODS winning putt in the Presidents Cup sealed the U.S. victory over the Internationals at Muirfield Village. After the rainsoaked foursomes and singles matches victors and vanquished alike were glad to get off the course and head for the clubhouse; another wet tournament in a soggy season. At least the Americans are getting to know what British golfers have to put up with. WHEN IT’S WET in the USA and Britain where do the world’s top golfers go for an October break? Bermuda, naturally. Padraig Harrington, Adam Scott, Justin Rose and Jason Dufner teed up last week at the Port Royal Golf Course for 36 holes and a $1.35 million purse. Some break, it beats a Kit Kat! Could I just mention that any loose change dropped into the poppy boxes in the month ahead would be much appreciated and will go, as always, to a very worthy cause. Until next time, happy golfing. Contact Mick for all your gripping and repair requirements. 638 859 475.

HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY VILLAMARTIN

Quotation of the week “I believe that the majority of high handicap golfers could use their shots more effectively than they do” – Bob Rotella.

Hacienda Riquelme was the chosen venue for the Hub Society´s latest event. The Nicklaus design course boasts a number of excellent holes, including the 18th, a tough 408m Par 4, necessitating avoiding the long fairway lake, which also protects the green to the left for an approach shot. Just a handful of pars for the Hubbers on that one. Strangely enough it was noted, 7 of the most difficult stroke indexes were on the front 9, instead of the usual split between the two 9s. That said, the course was enjoyed by both member hubbers and guests, although the average pars per player were much lower than usual. Birdies were even in shorter supply, just the four courtesy of Trevor Scammell on the not too difficult Par 4, 10th, Dave Lethaby on the 336m Par 4, 8th, John Eyre, an exquisite 2 on the 188m 5th and lastly an enormous putt, again on the 10th to convert the birdie by guest Matt Heywood. The Hubbers Grand Prix concludes at the next event with two players vying for top spot, Trevor Scammell and Paul

Durrant with two more looking at third place, John Eyre and Cam McHardy. Last year´s runner up Sam Salt looks like he will have to settle for fifth spot. The Hub´s next event takes place at Serena on Sunday November 3rd. Guests are welcome to register at the Hub (Villamartin). Results: N:T.P. POW TITLE HOPES DASHED WITH SURPRISE DEFEAT

B

arcelona’s Emmanuel Feuzeu is the new WBC Latino light heavyweight champion of the world. He won the title by beating local fighter Ricky Pow with a ninth round TKO in Dolores on Saturday night. But the contest was not without controversy as, going into the penultimate round of this ten round contest, Pow seemed to be shaping toward a deserved win, but with barely 10 seconds of the round remaining he was caught with a sharp left which seemed to stop the British fighter in his tracks. As Pow then clung onto the ropes, the only time he had looked under any difficulty, Feuzeu came in for the kill, but had seemingly run out of time. The bell rang and despite looking groggy Pow walked back to his corner. With a full minute to recover we were all caught unawares, however, when the referee walked over to Pow and waved him out. As Feuzeu was lifted off his feet in celebration by his cornermen both Pow and his trainer Alberto were in total disbelief. Pow had quickly shaken off any ill effects and was more than ready to continue. Whilst he had been stunned by Feuzeu’s short onslaught he was by no means hurt. The large crowd then made their feelings known to the match referee as the Cameroon boxer celebrated his success. It was clearly a premature stoppage with the official jumping in far too early and quite probably one that he now regrets. Feuzeu told the Leader that he had travelled down to the Costa Blanca fully expecting to take the crown home. “I have been working very hard for many weeks and I have watched Pow on UTube. I am strong and I am fit and I was always confident that I had enough to win the title. Pow was a good opponent. Although I don’t know him he fought a good and fair contest and I wish him well in the future.” The two evenly matched fighters spent the early rounds weighing each other up. A couple of early lefts from Pow rocked the Cameroon but as the pair traded blows through to the dramatic end they were difficult to put any distance between. Going into the ninth I had scored 4 of the rounds to Pow and just one to Feuzeu so the young Brit looked to be in good shape as he continued with his front foot strategy. Then just the one lapse, a powerful left hook from the visitor and the whole nature of the evening was turned on it’s head. Pow was clearly disappointed and after bravely taking the plaudits of his many fans he quickly retired to the dressing room to lick his wounds. Feuzeu meanwhile continued to take the applause from his

Feuzeu celebrating with a young admirer

new found admirers. In the evenings other contests the Croatian heavyweight Ivo Andelic was clearly delighted with his scrappy victory over Torrevieja’s Magomed Azuev ‘King’ Moja. With a major disadvantage in weight, Moja spent a large proportion of the fight attempting to spoil his opponents tactics, but the 30 year old Swiss based fighter had more than enough firepower to end the Russsian’s four fight unbeaten record. At super featherweight Armenia’s Mikael Mkrtchyan was a surprising winner over 24 year old Eder Berreta from Peru while the popular Feliks Kleins was in the ring for the first time in two years to earn a deserved points victory over Valencia’s Fran Gonzalez in the welterweight division.

TORRY DOMINATION COUNTS FOR NOTHING PINOSO CF......................3 FC TORREVIEJA.........2 In the 5 away matches that Torry have completed, a massive 13 goals have been conceded, which is in stark contrast to the zero that have been let in at home. To make matters worse, this was lowly Pinoso's first win of the season, which begs the question - should Torry take a more defensive approach when on foreign soil? For long periods of this match, Torry were in complete control, taking the lead in the 9th min. Gomez found Carrasco, allowing the little man time to slot the ball home with ease. A glorious assist by Dani Lucas found Carrasco in a 1 on 1 situation with the keeper, but this time he screwed the ball wide of the far post. Carrasco then returned the favour, but a powerful Dani Lucas shot was well saved. Just after the half hour mark it all went pear shaped, as the home side fought back with 2 sucker punch goals. The normally reliable Carrion fumbled a simple cross field shot allowing Javo to tap the ball home, then 4 mins later the same man put his side ahead. As in the first half, Torry continued to dominate play after the restart, creating no less than 6 excellent goal scoring opportunities. Both Gomez and Gasch were guilty of missing open goals, Pastor had a 'goal' ruled out for offside, and Alberto intelligently lobbed the keeper, whose finger tip save allowed a defender to clear the ball off the line. They were then severely punished on 79 mins, as Javo broke clear to score his hat trick, giving his side a commanding lead. With 7 mins remaining, Rafa headed home an Alberto free kick, but unfortunately all those missed chances came back to haunt the visitors. Alexis, Rafa & Gasch were booked, edging them closer to suspensions, as the penalty points continue to mount. Next Sunday at 5pm, Torry host Novelda at Vicente Garcia Stadium, well aware that they havenow quite a few very useful ex Torry players within their ranks.

CLARKES GOLF SOCIETY This week we traveled to La Serena for our weekly stableford competition on a surprisingly warm and calm day. The course was in its usual excellent condition with good receptive and true greens for those that found them. Not surprisingly the breeze got up and strengthened as the round progressed making life a little more testing as it was predominantly a cross wind, thus the scores were a little disappointing with only the top 5 players beating 30 points and 3 players getting 20 points or less. Never the less an enjoyable day was had by all and we returned to the bar for refreshments and the presentations. Results were: Nearest the pin on hole 9 was Alan Pickin Nearest the pin on hole 17 was Roy Welburn Nearest the pin in 2 on the par 4 10th was Kenny Taylor Longest drive on hole 18 was Tommy Clarke. Winner with 35 points was Kenny Taylor Runner up with 32 points was Tommy Clarke. Next week we are at Altorreal meet at the bar at 08:00am on Thursday 24th Oct. Don't forget our Poppy Day Appeal day at Peraleja on Thu 7 Nov sponsored by Mick the Grip.
