SILENCE FALLS ON MIL PALMERAS Silence fell among three hundred people on Sunday who were gathered around the Garden of Remembrance at the Capilla de las Mil Palmeras in the diocese of Pilar de la Horadada, to remember fallen military, comrades, family and friends. Poppy-filled wreaths were laid at the base of the cross standing in the memorial garden and with seven-deep crowds surrounding the site on all sides Pipe Major Barry Waddington and the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, led off a parade featuring former servicemen, women and a large number of local dignitaries. And it was not only members of the Expatriate Community who came out in force. The Service was attended by many representatives of the three main towns covered by the Branch, including the mayor
of Pilar de la Horadada, José Fidel Ros, and representatives of Orihuela Council, each bringing with them a sizeable delegation from their own communities. Paul Rodwell, the British Consul from Alicante, together with the Chairman of District North, Chris Wyatt, was also in attendance. The Rev Terry Baxter, was officiating at his first Orihuela Costa service while, 16 year old Rebecca Holt attracted tumultuous applause following her magnificent solo performance of the Les Miserables classic ‘Bring him home.’ Piper Alex Hunter played the ‘Lament to the fallen’. Exactly on the 11th hour, following the ‘sounding’ of the Last Post by Derek Hayes, everyone was united, standing shoulder to shoulder, for the two minute's silence, a time to reflect on the memories of friends, family and colleagues who had suffered or died in conflict in the service of their many nations. wreaths British Consul Paul Rodwell said he felt privileged to lay a poppy garland on behalf of the British Government. Keith Carter, chairman of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion, said the event was a great success with lots of residents coming out to show their support. He said "It has been a truly glorious day." The Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion was formed in January 2008, and yesterday in Mil Palmeras it celebrated the 6th, and to date most successful, Remembrance Sunday in it’s relatively short history.

THE SAMARITANS IN SPAIN It seems incredible that a service employing 21,000 volunteers in 210 locations could have grown from so small a beginning. Just 60 years ago on 2nd November 1953 Dr Chad Vara picked up that first phone call. He was, in his own words, "a man willing to listen, with a base and an emergency telephone.. Since that time the Samaritans have grown and changed with the times. Samaritans in Spain began as an idea by Steven Ashley. The project began in Sept 2005 and culminated in the launch of the Costa Blanca Samaritans service in Spain in July 2008. The first branch opened in Benissa, for 3 evenings a week. This was followed by the opening of the 2nd branch in Villamartin in January 2009. In March 2009 the service increased their opening hours to five evenings a week and this was further increased in January 2010 to seven evenings a week. In mid 2012 the service became centralised in VillaMartin, and in February 2013 the Samaritans moved to a joint centre of call centre, drop-in centre and charity shop at Punta Marina. From January 2013, the service increased to a full 24 hours a
day service, 365 days a year. The service now also offers email support, mail support, prison visiting, two monthly drop-in centres one at the office for the Urbanisations in San Fulgencio in San Fulgencio on the third Thursday of each month from 10am to 1pm, and also one at the library in Benijófar on the second Tuesday of each month from 10:30am to 1pm. And of course there is the drop-in centre at the Samaritans charity and call centre at Punta Marina, Punta Prima, near Torrevieja. This is open for dropins between 10am and 2pm Monday to Saturday. If you would like to help there are many ways to do this. You can volunteer to be trained and become a listener by filling out an application form at the drop-in centre, by filling out the application form on the website Samaritansinspain.com, or by sending an email to joinus@costablancasamaritans.com You can also contribute items to the charity shop at Punta Marina. If you are a business and would like to support us in some way, please contact info@costablancasamaritans.com , which is also the address for further information. Further information can also be found at the website samaritansinspain.com and by searching on Facebook for Samaritans in Spain. If you need help or support the 24hr helpline is available on 902 88 35 35, and email support is available through pat@costablancasamaritans.com, or by dropping in to one of the drop-in centres.

HAVE A GO HEROES TACKLE ROBBERS IN CABO ROIG Resident, Phil Devall, saw the intruders hiding behind an aircon unit.
Two would-be robbers were arrested last Wednesday morning by a joint task force of the Guardia Civil and Policia Locale after they had been tackled and penned in by four residents of Aldeas de Aguamarina in Cabo Roig. The attempted robbery took place on the urbanisation late on Tuesday night but as a couple were arriving home from a night out with friends they saw movement on the roof of a property which, following the death of its owner, was known to be empty. The couple reported the suspected movement to other community residents who immediately went to inspect the property themselves. They were able to recruit additional assistance en route. The youngest member of the, by now 4 residents, then climbed onto the roof of the property and after close inspection confirmed that a roof panel had been forced
and entry gained. At that point the emergency services were called on 112. An English speaking operator took the call and assistance was immediately despatched with officers of the Policia Locale arriving at the urbanisation within 3 minutes of the call being made. The information was passed to the Policia Locale who were joined by two members of the Guardia Civil moments later. Having scaled and entered the building two arrests were then made by the officers. The alleged robbers, both said to be of Spanish origin, and thought to be aged 25 and 20, were immediately cuffed and pulled up onto the roof and then dropped down onto the pavement below where they were held by the community residents. They were subsequently taken to the Guardia Civil station in Torre de la Horadada where they remain in custody. On gaining entry to the property the police recovered a large tool-
bag full of door locks, over 20 keys, pliers, mole grips, screwdrivers, hammers, jemmy bars and gloves although the two accused insisted that they were only looking for somewhere to sleep. A police spokesman suggested that the alleged robbers had probably intended to use the property as a base on the urbanisation from where they would carry out further break ins at thie oen leisure. They had all the trademark equipment including a large bunch of door keys and the locks which they probably intended to change. Residents of urbanisations that have vacant and rental properties of their own are therefore recommended to keep a careful eye on movements around those properties and to report any suspicious movements to the police. One of the alleged robbers was apparently well known to police in the Orihuela Costa area.

INFORMATIVE TALK ON PADRON AND VOTING THIS WEEK With the European elections looming, followed not long after by the municipal votes, attention naturally turns to the rights of citizens, especially those who reside in a country other than their native land. There has been a lot of speculation and inaccurate information about the rights of voters in Spain, as well as the need for residencia, or registration on the padrón. To try to resolve some of the issues relating from confusion caused, sometimes intentionally by those trying to “muddy the waters” but often by the sheer perceived complexity of the administration of Spain, official bodies in Spain have been trying to do what they can to provide the accurate information. The British Consulate and charity groups have been warning for some time that British citizens who are resident in Spain must register on the Padrón at their local town halls in order to qualify for a variety of benefits, including getting help from social services, for example. Other difficulties facing British Nationals include those who have received hospital treatment and are ready to be discharged but have no one to look after them, people who desperately need residential care but are ineligible as they failed to register on the Padrón, and others who failed to register for their social security cards and thus lack entitlement to any healthcare. The Consulate explains that “When you decide to live abroad you are also choosing to rely on the services of the country you live in. If you fail to register your name, you are putting yourself at huge risk of being unable to get future help when you most need it”. Anette Skou of the Foreigners Department in Mijas says, “In most cases where social services are powerless to help it is because the
British nationals involved have not registered on the Padrón. We urge all British residents in Spain to REGISTER ON THE PADRÓN – YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE”. In order to try to clear up some of the confusion locally, the foreigner´s department of the province of Alicante has been collaborating with local town halls to provide informative workshops for ex-pat residents. Last week, one such event was held in Torrevieja, with people from all nationalities attending the event, this week, it is the turn of Orihuela. On Thursday, the 14th of November, at 10:30, the Civic Centre Alameda del Mar on the Orihuela Costa will play host to an informative chat by distinguished professor of the Faculty of Law of the University of Alicante, an expert on EU law Rafael Agulló, which will feature simultaneous translation into English, as it is the mother tongue of most Europeans living in Orihuela Costa and it is also a widely known language. The talk is free, although space is limited, so early attendance is recommended, and will cover aspects of the legal requirements, the paperwork to follow, in order to guarantee that foreigners maintain their voting rights, and do not find out on Election Day that they cannot exercise this right. An information leaflet will be available in a number of different languages.

AR DIAMANTE BEACH SPA & CONVENTION CENTRE IS BEST IN EUROPE To be awarded any accolade brings great joy to everyone, whether as an individual, or as a business striving to be the best in their field. But the AR Diamante Beach Spa & Convention Centre, located in the Alicante town of Calpe has not only been presented with an award for their level of service delivery, they have been awarded with the envious title of Best Hotel in Europe for business meetings, granted by the Condé Nast Johansens Awards for Excellence. This award, which saw stiff competition from hotels in Italy and Portugal, strengthens their position as a destination for business meetings and a versatile hotelier, in which tourism holidays and weekend getaways are also of great importance. The centre offers a range of different sized meeting rooms, capable of dealing with the largest and smallest of groups, with their Gran Salón Leonardo da Vinci capable of holding 1,000 people, being the jewel in their crown of function rooms. AS for accommodation, with 285 double rooms, 9 of which are adaptable to form an entire suite, and the location of just a few minutes from the beach, whatever the need for a first class hotel, the AR Diamante Beach Spa & Convention Centre has proven that they are the best, not only because they believe in quality service, but because others do so too.

TORREVIEJA NEWS ROUNDUP The High Court of Valencia has received the formal transfer notice from the Supreme Court of the ratification of the sentence to three years imprisonment imposed by former mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hern谩ndez Mateo. From the moment the document was received, the court may now order the execution of the prison sentence, once they have finalized the conditions to the correctional institutions he will be sent, dependant on certain characteristics that the courts decide are suitable for him to serve the time incarcerated having been found guilty in November 2012 by the High Court of Valencia to three years in prison and seven in disqualification for the manipulated of the bidding process in the award of a waste disposal contract, a decision supported throughout the judicial appeals process. European residents of Torrevieja attended a conference this week in which the official advisers from Alicante offered information and advice on both the padr贸n and voting rights in the European elections. There will be another conference on the 14th of November on the Orihuela Costa. Registration has now opened for participation in the Carrera Torrevieja Xtrem Running Alicante race, specifically designed for those who like more of a challenge than simply running through the streets, which will take place on the 1st of December. The race will start at 11:00 at the Hombre Del Mar monument, featuring some 15 obstacles along the 6 kilometre route. Entries are accepted between now and the 29th of November, and can be done via the website, www.grupobrotons.com, with a 13 and 16 euro fee payable, depending on your status, which increases on the day of the event. Once the serious racers have set off, there will also be a junior version which starts at 12:30.
On Friday the 8th of November, the Tourist Office on Paseo Vista Alegre in Torrevieja played host to a number of officials from various consumer help groups, with the Mayor of the city, Eduardo Dol贸n, offering information which the town hall hope would help to raise issues that affect consumers in order to create protocols and collaboration among municipalities. The tourist information point itself was the site of a number of complainants the previous Friday, as it was closed for the holiday, when Torrevieja was being visited by tourists from across Spain and other countries, looking to seek information as to what they could do on a city claiming to be of touristic interest. Others also complained about the lack of signs, both relating to the closure on the holiday, and the regular opening hours of the facility. A Local Police action group has once again launched a special campaign aimed at policing young people of Torrevieja, providing workshops, presentations and assistance on subjects such as drugs, violent youth groups, bullying, internet and new technology risks and have this year added gender violence to their portfolio. The unit was launched nine years ago with a primary objective of continuing to increase security in secondary schools, both inside and outside, offering clear and simple advice and solutions to problems as well as seeking to clarify the doubts that arise.

LA REGIA IMPROVEMENTS MOVE AHEAD NEW FOOTBRIDGE over N-332 in Cabo Roig to be in place early 2014 - Martina Scheurer Councillor for the Coast, Beaches and International Residents of Orihuela, Martina Scheurer, announced the immediate construction of the footbridge to go over the N332 road at La Regia. Scheurer has said that the work will be completed in early 2014, at a cost of 231,900 euro. At the same time, the councillor was also able to offer full details of the proposed development of the parkland at La Regia, with two very clear objectives, the control and passage of water which naturally runs through the area in the event of rain, and the need to make the area more attractive and useful for residents after years of neglect. The lower part of the area, nearest to the N-332, will be completely cleared, which includes the removal of the current sports pitch, which notoriously floods during the rainy season. As plans have been submitted, it transpires that this particular piece of land is currently subject to a legal battle over ownership, and so, the town hall must wait for a court decision to clarify whether the land is in fact owned by the municipality, or the property developer who built the urbanisation many years ago. That said, one element that the town hall can and intend to carry out is the installation of trunks which will control the flow of water from its natural route, directing it away from the land, fixtures and fittings, to provide a clear route through towards the sea. The next park of the parkland, from the footpath up to Calle Caliza, forms the most exciting part of the development program. The water flow will be maintained again from the higher ground, but this area will feature a dog agility and training park, fenced off and in its own area, and the site itself will be surrounded by an American style walking and running track, which will not only provide a circuit around the plot, there will also be various health and fitness points surrounding the route. In addition, within the central area, there will be another track built, on more rough and mound like ground, which is designed to be used by cyclists looking to partake in lighter mountain biking activities. In the third section of the land, beyond Calle Caliza, a new multipurpose sports facility will be constructed, on the higher ground so as to minimise the risk of damage from this weather affected area, just beyond the current children´s play area, which will also be completely regenerated. As the footpaths meander through this area, those walking through their coastal created countryside park will be able to enjoy a variety of plants and flowers, all native to the area, but some at considerable risk, which will be planted in key points to nurture their natural development in an area which has also become somewhat depleted of the native flora.
However, although these plans sound somewhat idyllic, and will be welcomed by the countless residents and businesses, but there is one major hurdle that would have to be leaped, if the plans are to become a reality. Because of the amount of work involved in this project, the budget required is considerable. Therefore, in order to get clearance, the project has to go to the full plenary meeting and the majority of votes would decide if it will be approved or not. We know through recent months that the Partido Popular, although in opposition, hold the majority of votes, and have actively vetoed every proposal suggested, in what is believed an attempt to force the government out, but this park project contains elements that they have wanted for some time. In fact, the project contains elements suggested by all political groups, the PP, CLARO, CLR, PSOE and Los Verdes, and should, therefore, meet with approval without question. It is a lot of money to spend, and the question as to where that money is coming form is of course a valuable one, but it is to come directly from the money earned by selling plots of land on the coast. In other words, this is money from the coast, for the coast, so any arguments that the political opposition levy that all the money from the coastal sales goes to the city are clearly void, in this case. However, the allegations of lack of coastal investment have been a claim for many years before this
government, with the PP, along with CLARO now arguing that the government team are still continuing the legacy of their neglect, but it would only seem fair to question their intentions for the money from coastal land sales. A considerable amount of money has already been diverted by the Partido Popular majority vote to the health centre at Rabaloche, which nobody could question is in need of a new building, but the investment liability is with the Valencian government, not the local municipality. Valencia already has a massive debt that it owes to Orihuela, so by funding this project exacerbates that position. Calls for investment in a library on the coast have echoed through recent campaigns, but in reality, on the one hand the government team are investing a minimum amount on a trial “Reading Point to test if a huge investment would be viable, and on the other, the PP have announced their intention to use their majority vote to divert money from the sale of the coastal plots to finish building a civil centre in the small Orihuela village of La Aparecida, claiming that as the 1,350,000 euro is now available from the sale, they could finish that project immediately. To complete a building in a village of little over 2,500 residents might well be a project worth considering, but not when criticism is being levied to a lack of investment on the coast, nor when the complaints that the money from the sale of coastal plots is not being invested back on the coast. Therefore, with a project that will improve the coastal area, with a maximum budget of 350,000 euro, containing elements asked for by all political groups, with money from the coast being spent on the coast, it seems like this project presentation will be the easiest for the government team to pass, but we shall have to wait and see if that is the case when it comes to the plenary.

How locally elected councillors choose to allocate limited revenue, especially in times of recession, is usually influenced by the strength and effectiveness of the advocacy and complaining done by a local community. Local councillors are especially sensitive to how the local press highlights issues, especially if the issue is raised by an area that voted for them in the local government elections. Issues that make headlines in important local publications will normally result in councillors taking decisions to spend money to stop the degree of bad publicity being generated, especially if they or their political party is being criticised. The problem for Orihuela Costa is that 24 out of 25 of the locally elected councillors do not read or understand the many English language newspapers that highlight issues of fundamental concern to the large expat community living on the coast. Whilst the many publications produced by the English language press on the Costas do excellent work in highlighting issues affecting the huge international community and all residents living along the coast these newspapers do little or nothing to influence politicians who only read Spanish language newspapers, listen to Spanish language radio or watch Spanish language television. Consequently the English press covers valid concerns raised by resi-
dents which generate a substantial amount of public support; however these concerns are not read and noted by those who have the power and resources to rectify the problems. The negative reports in the English language press about poor garbage collection services can easily be ignored, sidelined and marginalised by Spanish speaking councillors who have no insight into the disgust felt by all Orihuela Costa residents. One of the most fundamental issues for Orihuela Costa is that many of its international residents fail to make their legitimate complaints about the poor level of services heard. Many residents who have moved to Spain feel that they have no rights to complain about the poor level of services provided by Orihuela and its Councillors. Many expat residents feel that Orihuela Costa is typical of all Spanish Local Authorities and that all other local government areas suffer the same high degree of deprivation. However this is totally untrue. No other town or village along the Costa Blanca is so totally deprived of public services as Orihuela Costa. No other town is as chronically understaffed in every department of local government provision as Orihuela Costa. No other area has such a total lack of basic local government services that affects every age group living in the locality as Orihuela Costa. There is no other area with a population of more than 33,000 people that lacks the provision of a cemetery anywhere along the coast! Until the residents of Orihuela Costa ensure that
A neglected park in Los Filipinos
their legitimate complaints are heard, recognised as being valid and acted upon all the residents living on Orihuela Costa will continue to be discriminated against. Money from local taxes raised from the coast will continue to feather bed the residents living in Orihuela City who enjoy a far higher quality of public services than is appropriate from the taxes they actually pay. Why should the international community subsidize people living 30 kilometres away? Make your voice heard! Register your intention
to vote and ensure you use your vote in the next local election. This is your right! You have rights in Spain; make sure you exercise them for the good of your local community. Sandpiper The population of Orihuela Costa need to ensure their voice is heard and the only way to achieve this is to ensure that residents are on the padron and the electoral register and they vote in local elections.
ORIHUELA AND THE COSTA NEWS ROUNDUP The Reading Point for the Orihuela Costa is now taking shape, with the shelves now installed and the volunteers all eagerly coming together to get all of the books stacked on them. With thousands of books already catalogued into their electronic system, every step of this project is met with excitement of those involved, although more volunteers are still welcome. Situated in the Centro Municipal de Orihuela Costa, located on Calle Ciprés, the building is just around 400 metres from the bus stop which drops off at the Aldi supermarket, and also with ample car parking for those who choose to drive, it is within easy reach of the entire coastal area. Other plans are also being set in motion to provide aesthetic improvements to the grounds and car park, such as benches and other furniture, which the councillor for the coast, Martina Schreurer, hopes will also mean that the unit become a focal meeting point for the entire community who can chose to partake in the organised activities, or just take advantage of being able to use these municipal facilities.
Still facing criticism over green waste collection, the Orihuela town hall has provided clear data as to the cost to each household, which is currently 5.80€ for a detached property and 1.35€ for all others, per month. That is of course those properties which pay and doesn´t include the 20,000 coastal properties who do not yet contribute to the collection service. Any resident can check if they are a contributor by looking at their Aquagest bill and seeing if the word “Podas” is listed. If it is, that is your contribution to the green waste collection, if there is no record on your bill, then you do not yet pay for the service.
Martina Schreurer has also explained why the town hall does not have a pruning treatment plant on the coast, which is another request and criticism levied by Bob Houliston of CLARO, explaining that this type of activity requires a specific plot of land for the purpose of treating the waste, and the Orihuela Costa does not have such classified land under the General Plan, which would mean that if the town hall were to embark on such a scheme, it would be an illegal activity. The Planning Department of Orihuela, with the assistance of the Local Police, has suspended the construction of an illegal petrol filling station in El Palmeral. The station is attached to a previous one which closed down and has been stopped as it does not have a license for building or operating, and is in infringement of three cases of urban planning regulations. The Councillor responsible for planning, Antonio Zapata, confirmed that his department will continue “firm” action with offenders, who cannot continually “mock the law”.
Although it is still early in terms of promoting the event, the coastal councillor has said that her team are still actively intending to provide a Christmas Market on the coast, although there are numerous administrative elements that must be satisfied, especially as there were complaints over previous coastal events not being correctly administered, although they were well received by the residents.
The Councillor for Tourism, Rosa Martínez, has announced that a new tourist information centre which opened in late July in La Zenia Boulevard shopping centre shall become a permanent fixture in the centre, as “it is a strategic point for providing information of culture and heritage” of Orihuela. The tourism department has revealed that the information point in the shopping centre has been more active than the traditional coastal office, and so it shows the need for the continued cooperation between the retail and touristic elements.
Famed Spanish painter, Fernando Sánchez y Juan, born in Elche in 1943, has donated a work of art to the City of Orihuela, following an exhibition of his art through October. The painting, Naturaleza Muerta VII, has a value of 395 euro, but will now become an asset of the municipality of Orihuela for all to enjoy in the future.

LIGHTING UP TIME Based on data presented by the European Union, the Interior Ministry of Spain has issued a recommendation that drivers of cars which are not fitted with automatic “Daytime Lights”, should use dipped headlights during the day, as it may reduce road fatalities by up to 10%. The use of lights during the day is already mandatory on all roads in some European Union countries, whereas in others it is mandatory only on certain roads and in certain seasons. Since February 2011, it was mandatory across Europe for all new cars to be fitted with “Daytime Lights”, low power, LED´s, which increases visibility of vehicles. As daylight reduces during the winter months, and weather conditions can cause increased visibility problems, the fact that a dark car which has lights on can be seen up to 170 meters before the one without lights, means that the government considers this to be of considerable benefit to road safety during the winter. Therefore, the advice issued, which has been accompanied by a radio and TV campaign, says that since the country is in the reduced daylight time of year, the Traffic Department advises all drivers who do not have Daytime Lights installed, should have their headlights on during the day when driving by road. In order to clarify their reasons, the campaign also states that the objective of this road safety measure is not to illuminate the way in which you are driving, but to make your vehicle more visible for other road users, both drivers of other vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists. Last year in Spain, 70% of injury causing accidents on interurban roads in Spain occurred during the day, the percentage rising to 73% in the case of urban roads. In addition, two out of three people who are killed in traffic accidents, died during the day.

I´M 98 YEARS OLD, CAN I RENT A CAR? NO PROBLEM WITH INDIGO CAR HIRE Expats who have chosen to live in Spain for their retirement often return to the UK on a regular basis for various reasons. Shopping trips, visiting the family, and avoiding the long hot summer are some of them. Another is to spend Christmas with the family and especially the grandchildren. As the years go on, a problem that many have faced in renting a car in the UK for their trip so that they can get around is the upper age limit that many car hire companies impose. Indigo Car Hire are pleased to say that they can offer good value car rental up to and including 98 years of age!! Even better, there is no extra charge. Many car hire companies have an upper age limit of 75, and as people are living longer, healthier lives, especially out here in the sun, this can be very frustrating. At Indigo, they believe that drivers over 75 are often more reliable, have less accidents, and so are more than happy to have them as customers. They also accept most debit cards, and they can offer free one-way hire. That means that you can rent your car from one airport as you land, and drop it off at another when you are ready to return to Spain. Therefore you can visit friends and family all over the UK Christmas is an extremely busy time of year for car hire. Not only therefore is availability limited as the Festive season approaches due to sheer volume of demand, but as availability decreases, prices can soar. Cherie Walker, Reservations Manager for Indigo Car Hire, tells us: “Leaving the booking your car hire until the last minute can result in charges of up to 200 pounds for a small car for one week, or even being told that there is nothing available. I have worked in the car hire industry for over 9 years and the same applies every year- car hire at most major airports will be booked up by the end of November.”
She adds-“To get the best deal, it is advisable to book as early as possible. Also, if customers contact us directly for a quote on 00 44 113 2899281, or email sales@indigocarhire.co.uk with their requirements we may be able to locate them even better prices than on the website at www.indigocarhire.co.uk. I would most certainly advise all our clients not to leave it to chance but rather to book their car hire as soon as they have booked their flights and know their dates and times. We deal with lots of suppliers and will make every effort to obtain the best price possible for all our customers. “ Imagine not being able to rent a car to get around while you are in the UK at Christmas! SEVEN HUNDRED WOMEN KILLED IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CASES A total of 700 women have been murdered in Spain in the last decade in crimes which have been attributed to gender violence, with 600,000 women said to suffer each year, but only a quarter of cases are reported, according to the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas. In 2003, when records began to be collated with a new outlook on violence towards women, 71 were killed, 62 of whom were Spanish. The youngest was less than 17 years of age, whereas 27 of the women were in their 30´s, the largest age group affected. In over half of the cases recorded, the acts of violence were conducted by their male partner. Statistics were revised in 2006, taking other elements into account. In 2012, the last whole year for which data is available, the figure was the lowest since 2013, although there was still a tragic 52 domestic related killings. So far this year there has been 42 officially recorded deaths, with an additional 4 cases awaiting confirmation that they could be classed as domestic abuse. Of course the victims are not only those who are killed, one survey reveals that 840,000 children are affected by violence between their parents, with over half a million directly abused. This year, some 37 children have become orphaned as a direct result of a domestic violence related death. Amnesty International are heading a campaign called “16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence”, which starts on the 25th of November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ends on the 10th of December, which is Human Rights Day, in the hope of raising awareness about gender-based violence as a human rights issue at the local, national, regional and international level.

RYANAIR JET IN FIRE EMERGENCY LANDING A Ryanair Boeing 737, flying from Tangier in Morocco to Dusseldorf in Germany, is reported to have been forced to make an emergency landing in Spain´s San Pablo de Sevilla airport, after reports of a fire in the cabin of the aircraft. According to information from the 112 emergency coordination centre and air authority AENA, the notice was received at around 20:50, when the flight crew of FR2355, with aircraft registration number EI-DPF, reported smoke in the cabin. The full emergency protocol was initiated at the airport, with National and Local police joining fire services and medics to await the arrival of the flight, but upon landing the situation was declared as under control. The aircraft conducted a normal landing and taxied to an apron at the airport where 180 passengers were taken off the aircraft. Other flights at the airport have not been affected.

TORREVIEJA UPYD CALLS FOR HELP FOR PEOPLE WITH PROPERTY TAX DEBTS
The Unión Progreso y Democracia group of Torrevieja, the UPyD, believes that the City Council should engage more effectively with the problem of foreclosures, and that the town hall should not penalise any citizen who has lost their home by means of a debt to the City through tax increase in the value of urban land. Instead, the UPyD want to regulate those evicted who continue to pay municipal debts related to foreclosed property, as there are currently hundreds of citizens in Torrevieja who have suffered this kind of problem, and now fear tax bills which keep piling up on a property that is no longer theirs. The local coordinator for UPD, José Serna, commented, “in a city like Torrevieja, with a large number of foreclosures, it is necessary that the City take action on the matter because of the helplessness of many citizens”. The foreclosure rate in Torrevieja is the highest in Spain, for that reason Serna believes that “the number of homeless people without resources and with a debt owed to the city is growing”. The UPyD is now asking that the City Council start the process of drafting and approving of regulations for those citizens who can prove they are facing mortgage payment problems, and have asked that Torrevieja allocate a portion of the 2014 budget in order to cover assistance in these cases, which they also call to be retroactively implemented to 2008.
Monday, 11th November, 2013 ADVERTISING HOTLINE 966 73 0057 LEADER TEARS SHED OVER INDIAN ONION CRISIS It might be unusual to imagine how a simple commodity of everyday life can suddenly become a luxury item, but in India, the humble onion has become just that. For many, the price of onions is now so high, a key ingredient in many a dish is being omitted. Food experts and chefs are offering alternative recipes so that families might be able to find alternatives. Accusations of people hoarding onion stocks are constant, with the price reaching over 100 Rupees per kilo, little over a pound or a euro, per kilo. The Competition Commission of India is investigating if cartelisation is making the commodity expensive, having monitored the onion market for some time. Although still under scrutiny, a study last year by the Commission showed “clear imperfections, including cartelisation and hoarding, which impact the price of onions”, concluding that “Results of seasonal indices, correlations, daily, monthly arrivals, their prices, etc, indicated existence of anti-competitive elements in the onion markets”. The Indian government says incessant rains have destroyed crops in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Odisha, normally rich in supply. But the humble onion may go beyond the apparent,
as is now seems that there could be another hidden skin the war on prices, as food and supplies is also a political tool, where parties battle over promises and losses, with price and demand key to life itself. As Indian tourists celebrate dining on onions whilst eating abroad, back home the picture is a very different one, but with expectations that the situation may ease in a matter of days, the time to send supplies has not yet been reached, but if there is no change, the tears of diners may be real, whereas the rest of the world may start to realise that the onion is craved in other parts of the globe.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Bar rie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
The Feuding Expat
Recent emails from correspondents in France and Portugal, as well as Spain, have made me question how friendly expats really are towards each other? Personally and very fortunately, I have experienced nothing but help and support from other expats during my time living and working in Spain and the Canary Islands. Our British and Irish expats were lifesavers to us during those early months when we were living in the Costa Blanca, and who have remained some of our closest and dearest friends. From being given a bed for a few nights by our new and very generous neighbours, when we discovered that we had no water or electricity in our new home, to Christmas dinners kindly delivered by other neighbours when I had a particularly bad case of flu; I have very little to complain about from fellow expats. However, not everything in the expat garden is quite as rosy. I am well aware of the worries and concerns that many expats have when; for example, planning a dinner party or having friends around for the evening. Considerations such as “Who has fallen out with whom?”, “Who is not speaking to whom?” and “Who has recently slept with whom and does his /her partner know?” are all important considerations for the proficient hostess to ponder over when preparing her paella. Such considerations can override such usual considerations, such as “Is she still vegetarian?” and “He is on a celeriac diet, what the hell can I give him to eat?” pale into blissful insignificance. Of course, such sensitivities have to be taken account of in our home countries too, but they are much more acute within a small expat community and, particularly, within a small island expat community. Acute hostilities do exist between individuals and groups of expats. The “we are all in it together” is fine for a time, but when one expat
appears to be increasing in social standing, doing better than his peers, gaining preferential employment opportunities, or has the audacity to buy a new car or install a Jacuzzi, then all hell can break loose. There are few things worse than a jealous expat. There tend to be enclaves of particular nationalities in all popular expat areas, with the British and Irish sticking together, the Germans, the Norwegians and French all claiming their own particular ‘areas’, and often complete with their own schools, churches and even hospitals. Unhealthy as this may seem, it is understandable, because it gives a degree of protection in language, culture and behaviour that acts as a buffer against a sometimes hostile world, which is usually based upon a lack of understanding of local culture, laws and language. There is also the ‘Expat Pecking Order’ to consider. This can be a vicious beast in disguise, which one has to watch for. Expats are usually immediately interrogated upon arrival by their peers, such as to where you come from, the number of years that you have spent in your ‘new’ country, whether or not you speak the language and, most importantly, what you do or what have you done for employment in your home country? This final question is, of course, the main indicator as to your placing in the social order of your new group of ‘friends’. It is fine if you are a pensioner, but watch out if you say that you are unemployed. Top of the heap, of course, are those who speak the language, have knowledge of local culture, laws and traditions, those who are sleeping with a native, closely followed by those who had prestigious jobs in their home country, and whether or not you are perceived to “have money”. Of course, those who do not speak the language are forced to socialise together, whether or not they like it and it is those who are the most vulnerable when ‘fallings out’ and arguments take place. I have heard horrific accounts from several expats whose main reason for returning ‘home’ was that they found their fellow expats to be quite unbearable, and they were lonely because of lack of friends speaking in their own tongue. Expat feuds can be avoided; for example, I quickly discovered, and particularly as a newspaper reporter, not to take sides on particular
issues, such as animal welfare and, of course, local politics. Believe me, for all their good intentions, there is nothing worse than a group of animal welfare expats in dispute with another group of animal welfare expats; it is a bomb just waiting to explode. Despite the wellmeaning intentions of both sides, both groups seem totally incapable of seeing the merits and good intentions of another. My best advice for the intending expat is, above all, learn the language before you arrive and, if possible, develop interests so that you can take part in local activities that involve the native population. In doing this, you will widen your involvement with the local community that you have opted to live amongst and develop a wider circle of friends, and rely less upon the local expat population. Mind you, there is still nothing quite like a few drinks and a good gossip with someone who speaks the same language and shares the same sense of humour. TAKE THE FEAR OUT OF DENTISTRY WITH GERHARD NAGEL I read on Facebook this week that a friend needed a visit to the dentist. The stress and worry that the possibility of the impending meeting raised comments like “my stomach is churning” and “wish me luck”, to which the considerate readers obviously replied. But, once the appointment was over, the work had been done, the “patient” had returned alive, well and free from the pain that had prompted the initial concern. Some of us may have had a bad experience in the past, but most of us simply fear the dentist as that is a more natural reaction that enjoying the treatment, although it is usually without justification. Modern dentistry has changed. Just ask anybody who has had work done recently. Ask if there was actually anything “real” to fear. The answer is invariably “no”. Modern dentist offer a warm and welcoming environment and with the most modern precision equipment, that as soon as you walk into a dentist´s office, you feel comfortable, welcome and your fears are eased. The Gerhard Nagel clinic at La Zenia is one such place. Having been established on the Costa Blanca since 1997, and one of the first practices in the country to offer high quality cosmetic dentistry, the experience and knowledge of the team behind the surgery has grown since their initial opening,
keeping up to date with the most modern practices and equipment, to ensure that they have always maintained the highest standards of dental care available, with the overall aim of looking after your oral wellbeing, whether it be cosmetic or restorative. Their expertise in building smiles changes lives; quite literally, as they use their artistic approach to fully assess every individual mouth, from every conceivable angle, to ensure that any work carried out fits your own facial features. Even a language barrier is not a problem, as the staff speak a host of languages, including English, Spanish and German, which has enabled them to build up a big international clientele. Isabel, will help you arrange an appointment. If anyone has an emergency, the staff will do their utmost to fit you in that same day. The clinic has its own laboratory, so work such as repairs to dentures or moulding of teeth, are done very quickly. They also have a panoramic X-ray machine, which enables them to get a very accurate picture of your whole mouth. The clinic is used to dealing with holiday makers too, and will do fillings and bridges etc. at the drop of a hat. Specialist services, such as teeth whitening or cosmetic surgery, are also available. Children are welcome to come for check ups and pain free treatment. The clinic prides itself on prompt service. No more long waits for something you need now. However, with all of this said, with the reality of an open mind that tells us there is nothing to fear, even if you still have doubts, or if you have a phobia about visiting the dentist, Nagel’s can, in special situations, bring in a qualified anaesthetist, who will knock you out completely, to enable the dentist to do the necessary work. When you come to, you will be ready to go home. The anaesthetist will remain present throughout the whole operation.
Booking is recommended, but not always necessary. The opening times are 9am to 3pm. Phone 966 73 0058 or 607 821 433.

BY Ron Sheldon Week 9 and just the 1 big score with Derek’s Robins halting Dorothy’s charge at the top with that 7-2 beating but still leaving the Magpies in top spot. For the Magpies only Don & Dorothy won their 2 games leaving those skilful crib wizards pair of Martin and John clueless with zero wins. For the Robins, Louise & Nigel had 3 wins. Steve’s Steakhouse moved up into 2nd place with their close win over Keith’s Merlins who are still stuck in bottom place with only 1 win. For the Merlins only Ted & Michael managed 2 wins while 2 of the Steakhouse pairs scored 2 wins each. At the Sportsman John’s team had 2 pairs notching up 2 wins each forthe win against Brian’s Jaguars from Ebony & Ivory whose pair of Vanessa & Margaret G failed to score leaving them in 14th place. At Catorce, another close game, with Ayliff’s Galea “A” taking the last 3 games for their win with 2 pairs winning 2 games each while John’s home team had just John & Carole with 2 wins. Back down at Tracy’s, Richard’s Ospreys dropped a position in losing out to Sue’s Jays who had 2 pairs with 2 wins each while for the Ospreys only Phil & Jay showed promise with 2 wins. At Meson Galea, Brian’s “B” team, even with winning the last 2 games still missed out against John’s Lo Crispin who had 2 pairs with 2 wins which matched the 2 pairs from Galea whose pair of Brian & Barbara blobbed to zero. At The Tropical King Val’s Voles just missed out against my Falcons who had 2 pairs with 2 wins each while Ron & Norman scored 3 wins for the Voles but Val & Elsa didn’t score at all. Finally at La Siesta, Jim’s Sharks took on Mary’s Peacocks and forced a close win with 2 pairs scoring 2 wins each while for the Peacocks only Mary & Mike managed 2 wins.

180s: Joe Miller (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury, Patrick Abrams, Paul Durrant (Meerkats), Sid Cross (Hattons Hunks), Mark Filer (Busters) Highest finish: Alex Nikolov (Meerkats) 141 Cup holders Hub Meerkats got their required 7 legs without reply against a Tavern side not quite living up to expectations. Although a new side to league darts the Tavern still have several experienced players showing, but only Del Lister 2x100 and Ivan Jones showed any resistance to a strong Kats outfit. Sean Farrell gave glimpses of what he is capable of but the Taverners were always chasing the cup holders. Alan Ostrowski nailed the final D10 for the match after scoring a ton. Captain Derek Kingsbury contributed a 121 in the same leg to set up Ostrowski´s finish. The damage had already been done however, in the earlier legs. A very strong Kats triple of Alex Nikolov, Patrick Abrams and John Eyre, blitzed the opposition´s trio of Del Lister, Ivan Jones and Justin Hepburn. Two doubles from Nikolov and the other from Abrams plus numerous high scores gave the visitors a
0-3 lead. Mike Snow, Sean Farrell and Steph Ralphs featured next for the hosts against Paul Durrant, Lee Maiden and Graham Todd. Try as he might, Snow just couldn’t get going with Farrell doing most of the scoring but not enough against the Kats second string. Durrant took out 51 (S19,D16) Maiden D8 and substitute Eddie Bendelow finishing on D10 for 0-6. The break followed prematurely as Nikolov hadn’t eaten that day, for some delicious Tavern grub including a “to die for” chilli onions. The break over it was left to the likeable Ostrowski to wrap up the game. The match was played with plenty of banter which was probably the reason Ivan Jones wasn’t concentrating when left 178 points in the first triple. His first dart found the treble 20 as did the second. All eyes were now fixed on the 18 bed to leave the hosts on D20, but where did the last arrow go? Straight in the treble 20 for a magnificent 180, a bust and a bewildered Jones expecting rapturous applause but getting numerous groans. Gogarty´s returned to Que Pasa, scene of their famous league victory two weeks ago, this time for a place in the KO Cup quarter finals. The hosts kicked off with a strong trio of John Walker, Kevin Wood and Jim Storey expecting to take all 3 legs available. Walker and Storey opened up with tons, but Richard Patterson consistently scoring 80 pluses and Cynthia Jevons S9,D20, caused an early upset for 0-1. Walker, playing some great darts of late, pegged a 123 Jevons replying with 83. Some further good scoring followed, but it was Walker who had first shot at a double, succeeding with D8. 1-1. Storey 100 and Walker 140,D1 made it 2-1 despite a 90 from Jevons. Captain Gail Todd showed the way in the fourth hitting 85,125, Ernie Wilson completing the leg on D15 for 2 apiece. Stuart Clark 100 top scored for Que Pasa. At all square after 4 legs, Todd must have thought the victory was in her grasp, not so, as the Eagles reeled off the next 5 legs. Todd continued her form with more 80 pluses, but it was Den Hall 100,D12 and Eddie Klimonis 85,125 and D1, who did the damage for 4-2. Klimonis added a further ton in the 7th, Jevons countering with 95 leaving Hall to finish on D14. John Linton fired a 121 in the 8th, Klimonis replied with 123 leaving Walker to peg D10. Joe Cuyt got the all important 7th leg on D16. Porterhouse visited the Hunks at Hattons expecting a close game and eventually it was. After two sets of triples however the visitors were surprisingly 6-0 down even though Ray Hayes 2x100, Brian Nash 100 and Peter Ayres 116 were doing their bit in the scoring department. Joe Hawkins D2,D9, Kenny Wilkinson D10, Sid Cross 2x100, Rob Hawkins 137 and Steph Simpson 125 and a great 76 out (S20,S16,D20) did all the damage for 6-0. The Porters are never beaten and with a smart team change from captain Ray Sanderson his side took all three legs in the third triple, Hayes 100,D10, Ayres D10 and Nash D18 the victors. Simpson contributing 2x100 but to no avail. Further tons in the 10th leg from Cross and Simpson were not utilised leaving captain Sanderson to convert D20 for a 6-4 score line, what a
come back. Ayres got the Porters going in the 11th with a ton and the distinct possibility of the match going all the way a reality. Steady scoring from the Hunks, Cross 100 setting up Hawkins senior to face D20 for the match, which he duly accomplished second dart. Hunk Simpson was nominated his team´s man of the match for his excellent scoring and finishing contribution. The Queens of Pint Depot made the journey to Playa Flamenca and the formidable Busters bar anticipating a tough match. It was for them, but not for the high flying hosts. Queen Lorraine Cox once again played her usual high standard with good scoring and a D10 to level the match early in the game. Marie Dunne 105 and Cox 101 were the main contributors for the Queens on the night. Busters Shirley Roberts 125, Mark Filer 100, Paul Dowinton 137 and Ray Harvey 2x100 being the difference between the two sides. Down at the Pint Depot the Kings had the pleasure of a visit from the Honeys, a local derby if ever there was. Simone de Lacy opened up the Honeys account to take an early lead. Eddie Fozzard levelled with a little showboating. Requiring 100 he had the audacity to go for two bulls eyes. His first dart found one, but then nerves got the better of him and his second dart luckily found a single 20 leaving D15 which he duly planted. Julie McCulloch and Phil de Lacy added the two other Honeys legs, leaving Frankie Wurrock to seal the 7th leg and match. The Kings recorded a pretty fair 10 tons, Gary Minor 3x100, Matt Cummins 2x100, Fozzard 119,123, Martin Bynorth 117,120 and Ian Sleath top scoring with 138. Tracey Simpson 100 and Simone´s husband Phil 140 were the visitors main scorers. In the re-arranged game from Halloween, Porterhouse just edged out the Tavern and now take over 6th spot in the league. Peter Ayres was in top form with 3x100 and a couple of game shots. Unfortunately his joke telling hasn’t improved however he somehow still makes you laugh. Don’t know how you do it Peter. Ray Sanderson hit three game shots, whilst wife Sue hit D10 in the team game and 110 in her singles. Tavener Del Lister was his team´s man of the match with a 121 and 3 game shots. 2 former Euronics players are doing well in the current Federation Rankings Tournament. Sam Salt 10x140, 16 wins and Mark Farmer 9x140,1x180,a132 game shot and 17 wins are currently third and joint top respectively in the rankings, albeit after only one round. Darren Sanderson joins Farmer at the top with 2x180,14x140 and a 14 darter. Dave Wharton tops the game shot league with 3 big ones, 111,112 and 126. Listen to darts chit chat with Kevin Reardon and Paul Durrant on Exite Radio 89.2 and 93.1FM on Saturday aft between 3 and 4 p.m. Paul Durrant, League Chairman

EL PLANTIO 2 GOLF SOCIETY Tuesday 5th November 2013 Yellow Ball Some confusion when we arrived at the clubhouse, was Mel going to be there yes or no! It would spoil the draw for the Yellow Ball made up the day before so Gordon A was in rather a state. Mel did show up however so in time we started with 15 players on the holes 8 to 3 (I hope you haven’t lost me by now). My team today included Ian H and Frank S, so with two bandito’s nothing could go wrong, I thought. Having started at the 9th more confusion as we reached the 1st and couldn’t find the marker for the NTP as was announced earlier. Two holes later we saw Gordon who explained that the marker was with someone else, so in the end he decided to have the 7th as the hole for an NTP, nice! At the 3rd Ian had the Yellow Ball and his tee shot flew just over the pond only to hit a red stake and the ball dropped back into the water. After a missed put from short range with the second ball it was a blob on the card and “no point”. Fortunately I was able to compensate the damage on the 5th when a very long put resulted in a birdie, 2 for 8! However my tee shot at the 7th hit the blue lining on the other side and the ball rolled back in the water. The same happened on the 3rd, this time with the Yellow Ball flying over the pond to the right, hitting a tree and rolling back. In short an adventurous round especially when Ian couldn’t buy a birdie, missing the hole several times by less than an inch. Anyway we did enjoy the day and back on the terrace I told the others that I had been going round with two very subdued bandito’s. At the presentation the confusion continued when the NTPs were announced for Gordon Abba at the 5th and for a certain Henry (Charles) Mellor at the 7th hole, whom turned out to be Charlie Stewart, claiming that it was about the third time in two years that he had been able to reach the green at the 7th! Third place with a score of 123 was for Martin Rickman, Gordon Wayne and the same Henry (Charles) Mellor, while second with a score 125 was – much to our own surprise – for us, Ian Henderson, Frank Stanhope and yours truly. The winners today with 130 were John O’Brien, Rodger Marshall and Owen. My round with 36 Stableford and two blobs will most certainly result in a nice cut, the first in many weeks. Next Tues 12th November at El Plantio will be a surprise, to be decided. Put your name down by the Sunday before and make sure to be there on Tuesday on time well before 09.00. Visitors are welcome, contact Ian Henderson, tel 966 71 6616 or mobile 636 116 230.
ALFIES GOLF SOCIETY 34 members and guests from Alfie's Golf Society headed out to Mar Menor for our October monthly meeting. Slightly overcast but the sun soon came out - a totally different tale to the last time we were here in April when we all got a proper soaking! Mar Menor is not a long course but nevertheless still provides a stern test for golfers of all abilities as an erratic drive or approach shot will almost always find one of the many bunkers around the course, not forgetting the water around 'Amen Corner' on 13, 14 and 15. The course itself was, in my opinion, in very good condition and the greens in particular, which got quicker as they dried later in the day, although in a lot of the bunkers the sand was compacted, probably due to the heavy recent rains, not ground staff neglect. Onto the match and although several players said they struggled with the pace of the greens, around a third of the field registered 30+ stableford points or more. Nearest the pins on 2nd and 17th went to Jim Gilbert and James Cleary, with Sam Cobley taking the longest drive prize. Mick Scott finished 2nd

with 36 points, and Gary McGregor taking home the monthly trophy with 37 points. Congratulations to Gary on his first monthly prize of the year. Frank Kendrick would have won the event with 38 points, but Alfie's rules stipulate new members have to submit 3 cards to qualify for monthly prizes, and this was Frank's second. Mick “the Grip” Reeves came along to Alfie’s Bar after the match, and we presented him with a €100 donation to this year’s British Legion Poppy Appeal. €145 was also raised on the sale of Mick’s Poppy Appeal raffle tickets, the draw being held late November. The usual thanks to Anita at Alfie's for the post match buffet, and to Mike Probert from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services for arranging the day. November 28th sees us at Villamartin GC, which is also the final round of the Eclectic Cup. Only 3 places are available out of a maximum 36, so if you want to play, please call in at the bar to see myself or contact Sandie via email – alfiesgolfsociety@gmail.com.
HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY The Hub Golf Society enjoyed their final event of the season at the La Serena course, the day sponsored by PJ´s RentaCars. This is the second year PJs have supported the Hub, with new owners Trevor and Alison Scammell also participating in the Society throughout the season. It also meant the culmination of the Society´s Grand Prix, which runs concurrently at each of the season´s events, members opting for their best 8 scores of 12 designated events. Of the three GP contenders vying for top spot, only one John Eyre, made this week´s podium and that was fourth place. Unusually for Serena all tee boxes were placed at the appropriate coloured plates, bringing many of the numerous water hazards into play at this much improved course. The many lakes consumed a large amount of balls, but the Hubbers still managed 6 birdies, two of which went to Dave Cranston on the 307m, Par 4, 10th and the 167m Par 3, 17th. Those two four pointers contributed to an excellent 22pt back 9 and 36pt total for the top guest prize. In the Grand Prix, Trevor Scammell and Paul Durrant the two other contenders for the title went out last, accompanied by Eyre, to determine this year´s champion. Scammell had to finish at least 3rd with Durrant more than two places behind to win the event. Eyre had lesser chances of winning, but the possibility was there however, the combinations for victory are too complicated to print. The outcome was a 5th place tie for Durrant and Scammell and a 4th place for Eyre, leaving organiser Durrant in 1st place, handicap secretary Scammell in 2nd and Spurs supporter Eyre in 3rd. A dodgy winning trio if ever there was one. A Hub winter league is anticipated for December to February, everyone interested should register their intent at the Hub, Villamartin. Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Prober Probertt of Costa Blanca Green Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run competitions. Purchase of Golf Equipment The manufacture of heads, shafts and grips for most major brands of golf clubs are concentrated on a few factories in Asia where the are made for literally ‘pennies’. Unfortunately by the time they hit the outlets the selling prices are usually multiplied many fold to a price that the end customer considers to be unacceptable, As a result many golfers turn to the internet in an attempt to find a ‘bargain’ and this is where the saying Caveat Emptor (buyer beware) has never been more true because the market has been flooded with copy imitations of major brand clubs which are difficult to distinguish from the real thing. Just how do you protect yourself from falling foul of these pirates? The answer on many occasions lies in the shaft or grip used and you can also check the serial number on the club via the brand name manufacturer. If all else fails deal with a local respectable trader or remember that if it looks too good to be true it probably is. Leader Christmas Competition Due to the continued success of the LEADER golf events as usual we will finish the 2013 season with our annual festive Christmas competition which will be held at the beautiful Vistabella course on Saturday 14th December 2013.The final competition of the year will be a stableford competition played over 18 holes starting from 8.15am.The cost of the competition is only €29 per person including a shared buggy and there will be numerous prizes for the winners. I would recommend that you complete the entry forms earlier rather than later because this is a popular event and already there are only 15 buggies remaining which we will have to allocate on a first come first served basis so enter now to avoid disappointment. FORD-DUNN IS SPANISH CHAMPION Mat Ford-Dunn, Ford-Dunn, SM Master 35 Supermoto Champion of Spain
The final Supermoto race of the year was held at Albaida, Alicante, over the weekend and produced some dramatic racing as all of the Spanish championship titles were up for grabs. The Ford-Dunn brothers from Murcia have been in devastating form lately, with older brother Mat going into the last round with a 20 point lead in the SM Master 35 championship. Mat was taking no chances in both of his races, he knew that finishing 3rd in each race would be enough to win him the championship title. The Racing was close with the top 3 riders all capable of winning the championship battling for the lead. The battle went down to the last corner of the last lap when the rider in 2nd position crashed causing Mat who was right behind him to stall his bike as he desperately tried to avoid the fallen rider. The large crowd at the race fell silent as the race commentator went into overdrive describing the frantic action below him as both riders desperately tried to re-start their bikes. But it was Mat who kept his cool and fired his bike up first and raced to the finish line to take 2nd position in the race and give him a points lead that the others could not better, making him Spanish Champion for 2013. Anthony Ford-Dunn was racing in the premier, SM Open championship with the championship title already out of his grasp due to him
missing the first two races of the season his aim was to secure 4th position in the title standings. Fresh from his wins at the previous Spanish and Catalan championship rounds Anthony was in great form but the dusty low grip dirt section was favouring his competitors on the KTM machinery and he was struggling for grip on his Supermotoland Honda. He battled hard and was one of three riders that fought for the win in each of his three races. He managed an impressive 3rd, 2nd and 3rd positions that gave him 3rd overall for the days racing and secured him 4th overall in the 2013 SM Open Spanish championship. A great days racing as he stood on the podium with the reigning Spanish Champion Francesco Cucharrera who had just secured his 5th Spanish Championship title The Brothers and their sponsors ‘Advance Moves International removals’ and ‘Stratton Motorsports’ would like to thank the many race fans and supporters that turned up to the event and experienced a great days racing culminating in both Ford-Dunn Brothers finishing 2nd and 3rd on the podium and Mat clinching the SM Master 35 championship.
VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB
GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB
Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel & TV Choice The Albatrosses travelled to Monte Mar last Monday to face the Toreadors and gave them a mauling, with a 12 – 2 win by 116 shots to 74. Wins came from, Martin Foulcer, Les Barber and Ian Kenyon, Gail Watson, Stuart Allman and Fred Willshire, Sheila Cox, Dane Howard and Richard Lee, Sandra Burrows, Neil Burrows and Mike Regan and Tony French, Barbara and Arthur Brown. The Eagles were not quite so successful on their trip to La Siesta losing 10 – 4 to the Sputniks and by 132 shots to 81. Our 4 points came from Ken Savage, Jim Dempsey and Jim Harwood and Mo Foulcer, Jim Marshall and Diane Hudson. On Tuesday we proved once again that Vistabella can hold their own with the big boys. We took on San Miguel in the CBBA 20/20 knockout competition and thanks to wins away from Gail Watson and Fred Willshire in the pairs and wins at home from Maggie Furness in the singles, Stuart Allman and Richard Lee in the pairs topped off by a storming performance from Tony French, Tom Furness and Allan (Walk on water) Sinclair we took the tie on shot difference by 148 shots to 141. We now have to face Javier Green in the next round another tough assignment as demonstrated by our Winter League game the following day. Yes, on Wednesday our Winter League game was away to Javier Green and despite reports that they were not having a good season so far this quickly became hard to believe when we saw the strength of the team we were facing and so it proved. We lost on three rinks, drew on one and only Gail Watson, Mike Cox, Maggie Furness and Fred Willshire were able to produce a win, Sheila Cox, Barbara Brown, Les Barber and Arthur Brown drew to give us 3 points to Javier’s 9 as we lost the shots by 102 to 79. Friday’s Southern League game for the Lanzadores was at home to fellow league leaders San Luis Lions and as expected we had a tough battle. We managed to win on 3 of the 6 rinks but unfortunately lost the overall shots by 107 to 75 which meant an 8 – 6 points victory for San Luis. Our winning trips were Beryl Regan, Stuart Allman and Richard Lee, Tony French, Ian Kenyon and Mike Regan and Gail Watson, Mike Cox and Fred Willshire. The Conquistadors had a bye this week so were able to stay at home and relax. Plenty of action again next week let’s hope for some more good results.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE RESULTS AND TABLES FOR FRIDAY 8th NOVEMBER
By Janet Thomas SABA San Miguel Pulsars played away to San Luis not a good day we were on all 6 rinks at one point, then after about the 10th ends the wheels fell off and we only managed to win on 1 rink. Meteors played at home to Emerald Isle Titans this was a very close game, some rinks were very close but we made up on two rinks to get the overall. Shots for 129 shots against 98 Points for 10 points against 4. WINTER LEAGUE SOUTHERN LEAGUE 6th November, saw the winter league travelling North in convoy, to our good friends at Bonalba. After the previous year, playing in very bleak and windy conditions, the weather could not have been more opposite, with lovely hot sunshine, it could have been glorious June, not Christmas just around the corner! Anyway, the games got underway, and from the start, three of the rinks took the lead, never to look back, and winning convincingly. The two other games were much closer, and very nip-andtuck. However Sabrina's rink picked 6 shots up on the 16th end, which finally gave them the victory, but unfortunately the other rink lost on the last end, after quite a battle. So finally the score finished at 10-2 with San Miguel gaining the aggregate. A light lunch was served after the match, on the patio, with everyone enjoying the sunshine and company. SOUTHERN LEAGUE Jaguars played at home to La Marina Sharks This was a good game played against very good bowlers we managed a win on 2 rinks and a draw on 1 rink, but we got the overall shots which gave us 7 points and La Marina 7 points, overall shots for 96 against 89. ELCHE IT’S TOUGH IN THE MIDDLE! ELCHE CF ...0 VILLARREAL ..1 GETAFE ....1 ELCHE CF ....1 It’s been a hard five days for Elche, but a
BY JOHN valuable away point counts for a lot in these MCGREGOR early stages of the season. On Monday
with Ghananian striker Boakye upfront, Manu now injured until the New Year. Only twenty minutes had gone when Getafe scored, the ball not cleared by Elche’s defence and Pedro Leon hitting a long shot just inside Herrera’s post: but that apart the Illicitanos were holding the Madrid side well. In the second half, as though sensing they had little to fear from Getafe the Franjiverdes got forward more, and began to create good chances. Midway through the half Aaron burst down the left, flashed his cross over and there was striker Boakye at the near post to steer his header beautifully wide of Moya to deservedly drag Elche level. With ten minutes to go Javi Marquez retired in favour of Stevanovic, the Bosnian international coming on for his first league appearance: he was immediately booked for diving, not an auspicious start. Fidel also came on for Aaron but with little impact, and the match fizzled out with a draw a fair result. If you asked almost every Elche supporter at the start of the season if after thirteen games would it be acceptable if the club were mid-table with fourteen points, the answer would be a resounding ‘yes’ . So with three wins, five draws and five defeats behind them and with some strong La Liga teams below we must all be happy. With the international break coming next week it will give the injuries time to heal and more work done on the training ground as coach Fran Escriba strives to find his strongest side - and he has plenty of options to choose from. A hard week, yes, but our local boys are doing OK… Mucho Elche!
evening fourth-placed Villarreal came to the City of Palms, and although the Illicitanos didn’t deserve to win, they didn’t deserve to lose either. Strangely for the first time for ages quicksilver Coro didn’t start upfront, coming on halfway through the second half, his replacement Aaron. In the first half Manu del Moral flashed his header against the bar which could have put Elche ahead, but Villarreal had their moments too, looking especially dangerous on the break. They are a very competent side with few weaknesses and for the Franjiverdes to hold them, stop them from scoring, and make chances against them was an excellent performance. Half-way through the second half centreback and defensive rock David Lomban had to go off injured and on came one of last season’s heroes Peligrin to replace him – and he played well. But… it happens to every team. At 90 minutes gone, with everyone was settling for a goalless draw the normally-excellent Damian Suarez missed his man on the half-way line who set off at speed for goal. From the byline the winger slipped it inside and it took two touches, one a miscue until it was pushed past Herrera: ultimate despair and frustration for everyone connected with Elche to Boakye celebrates his 60th minute equaliser lose like that in the final on Saturday evening at Getafe minute. www.elchecf.com That was Monday evening. On Saturday the Illicitanos were in the capital to take on fifth-placed Getafe, another sound La Liga side. Lomban was still out injured, so the experienced Peligrin continued to ably deputise, as Cisma did at left back for Albacar. A major frustration for Elche on Monday was left winger Fidel, seeing much of the ball but doing so little with it. Subsequently he lost his place to Javi Marquez, returning to boost the midfield with Ruben Perez and Carlos Sanchez,
CF Mil Palmeras Football Roundup CF Mil Palmeras 0 - 5 CD Cox Sponsored by Sunshine FM This team need to learn quickly about there positional sense because the fight and determination is there in abundance but they are being let down by not knowing where to be and when. After a very slow start we got going and were unlucky to go 1 down when aaron made a great save only for the rebound to be tapped in when the attacker was clearly yards offside. All players are giving so much but the jump from 6 a side to 8 a side on a much bigger pitch from last year is proving a hard task to adapt to. But nevertheless there is enough promise to work with and I'm sure we can improve in the weeks to come. Man of the match Aaron made some great saves dispite the result. Vamos Toros!! SUDOKU SOLUTION
TOP OF THE TABLE CLASH ENDS ALL SQUARE FC TORREVIEJA.........1 CD ELDENSE.................1 Eldense arrived at the Vicente Garcia on Sunday evening having conceded just 3 goals in their dozen Tercera outings, boasting by far the meanest defence in the whole of the 4th level of Spanish Football. They were also undefeated, having won 9 of this season’s fixtures, dropping points only to Pinoso, Jove and Novelda. Torrevieja on the other hand, had conceded a hatful of goals on the road but were still to let one in at home......so there was something to give by at least one of the sides, supporters of the Torrevejense just hoped that it would be the visitors that would buckle first. And despite the occasion being a ‘Club Day’, “no freebies here folks,” a healthy crowd turned up at the Vicente Garcia to cheer their heroes on. Surprising news in the managers selection, with Obele and Dani Lucas returning from injury but both left out of the starting line up, nevertheless the game got off to a lively start and with Eldense’s Adriane going into the referees notebook for a cynical challenge in the opening seconds of the game it seemed as though the visitors had alraedy set out their stall. But it was the home side that took the early initiative and with a little more composure from Pastor we could have seen Torry in front as early as the 6th minute, but with time to pick his spot the striker blasted over from close range having been fed in by Alberto. Entertaining football it was but neither team was able to create anything of note during the following half hour, both defences living up to their miserly reputations. The home side were clearly missing the midfield influence of the suspended Carrasco and as the visitors shaded the middle of the park every one of the Torry players had to be on his toes. Approaching the half time interval however the Eldense defence was finally breached. An exquisite through ball from Rafa despatched Alberto on a run down the left. He brought the ball infield as the Eldense defence dropped off and when Alberto Macia was drawn off his line the Torry forward slipped the ball under the advancing keeper. Moments later the home side could have doubled their lead but Micro fluffed a reasonably easy effort and so as the half time whistle blew it was the home side that were in the ascendency. The second period continued in a similar manner with neither side giving very much away. Eldense in particular defended well and were difficult to knock off the ball and it was they who created the first opportunity of the half when Carrion was called into action to save from Petu at close range. Gasch replaced Pastor on the hour mark to be followed off the bench by Obele and Dani Lucas but the visitors continued to resist the Torry pressure. Then on 83 minutes Adriane levelled the scoreline through a crowded area. A corner was hit hard to the near post by Petu. Although it was parried away by Carrion it fell kindly to the feet of the Eldense forward who stabbed it in through a melee of legs. Quite probably just reward to a side that worked hard for each other through the entire game. There followed 5 minutes of added time in which both sides created additional chances but with no addition to the scoreline a draw was perhaps a fair result. Next Sunday Torrevieja travel to Ribarroja for a 12 o clock lunchtime kick off
