ORIHUELA’S DEPUTY MAYOR STANDS DOWN Accompanied by a delegation of party colleagues, the first deputy mayor of Orihuela and councillor for infrastructure, culture and communication, Antonia Moreno of the socialist PSOE group, announced her resignation from the government team of the municipality this week. In her opening speech, Moreno said, “I have summoned you today because I announce that at the end of December, and for strictly personal reasons, I will present my resignation as councillor for Orihuela, and therefore give notice for the order to replace me with another companion”. As the leading figure of the PSOE in Orihuela, Moreno has courted controversy herself during her time of service, not least facing criticism from both Pedro Mancebo and Bob Houliston over what they believe was her decision to improve one particular street

in Orihuela city, a street that was in repair and a street that a number of other council members also reside. Commenting on her departure, Mancebo told The Leader, “She has left for personal reasons but she always had a personal agenda. Her projects were personal, everything she did was personal, she was a very charismatic person, but only looked after herself”. In her speech, Moreno continued, “I think after eight years committed to Orihuela, the time to give way to other partners and facilitate the maturity of new leaders and voices leading projects for Orihuela residents has arrived”. Indeed, it was in the most recent plenary meeting that the socialists still expressed their frustration at the childish, bullying antics of some of the other council members, who had in the past resorted to extremely personal insults towards Moreno, in actions that would be unacceptable in the school yard, though some consider acceptable from those elected to govern. In fact, in the most recent recognition of World Children’s day, the plenary hall was given up to the younger residents of the municipality, who behaved far better than some of the politicians who resort to inhumane tactics rather than a balanced and mature approach. The 5th of December this year marked the eighth anniversary of the formation of the PSOE in Orihuela, during which time Moreno has served in one capacity or another. Moreno had informed her party leaders that she had no intention to stand in the next elections, but this now premature, though “very conscious” decision seems like the right time to move on, “I informed the National leadership of my party and my local colleagues last March of my intention not to stand. I appreciate their discretion and attempts to change my mind, but I know that it is a decision I made with no return to serenity and conviction”. Although Moreno´s departure will leave a “charismatic” hole in the political management team, as the PSOE has been largely stable in this administration, the other member will simply move up the list to make way for a more junior colleague to join the

government team. Currently, Victor Luiz, who works as an advisor, is number 8 on their election list, so the natural progression will be for him to join the government team. As for the competencies of the departments, they were already removed some time ago, at her request, so that she could refocus on her career in education. The confirmation of who will take the place as first deputy Mayor, and who will lead the PSOE in the future are both outstanding, although one possible contender is Antonio Zapata, another senior member of the PSOE. Whereas speculation over her departure is expected, Moreno re-emphasised that the decision was “purely personal” in her closing address. She then concluded by thanking everybody involved in Orihuela, especially those who have “taught me so much”. As for the immediate future, facing questions, Moreno confirmed that the bipartite government will “continue until the end of term unless that a censure motion prevents it”, before also showing her support for her local, regional and national colleagues, with the belief that the PSOE is a strong team to run for election in 2015.

Clearly excited by the prospect, around 14 children from the Los Dolces school took to the stage, song sheets in hand, to entertain the audience at the switching on ceremony of the Orihuela Costa Christmas lights on Thursday.

Prior to the entertainment, a fair crowd had gathered, as the government team, comprised of Martina Scheurer from the Los Verdes, along with Antonio Zapata and Carolina Gracia of the PSOE, with Pedro Mancebo from CLR and Bob Houliston from CLARO all supporting the event, with a noticeable obvious absence of any representative from the PP, the spectacle centre became surrounded by the residents and visitors keen to enjoy the illuminating event. Immediately after the speeches, before the government members dashed off to the city for a similar event there, the honour of pressing the button to switch on the lights was given to one very lucky little girl, the delight obvious on her face, as the Orihuela Costa gave off a sudden glow, with the spirit of Christmas joy abundant. As the singers then sang, the lights emitted their glow; the pride on the faces of the internationally representative parents echoed the warmth of the event, officially marking the start of the Christmas season.

TWO HOURS TO RESPOND TO EMERGENCY CALL

Local police and residents had to wait for two hours for an ambulance to respond to an emergency call on Saturday morning when a 77 year old German lady collapsed in a diabetic coma in the La Florida area of the Orihuela Costa. The delay occurred, it is said, because of confusion over the address, which was recorded as being la calle Acuario, of which there are two in the region. It is understood however, that at the time of the call an ambulance was not available to respond. When the vehicle finally arrived it was manned only by auxiliary staff who had to be

helped by local residents. The incident occurred at about 10:45 on Saturday when a neighbor noticed through a window that the German lady was lying unconscious inside her lounge. It was initially thought that she had died but on gaining access through the window firefighters found her to be unconscious but still breathing. The fire service officers again called the emergency coordination centre but it was 12.45 before there was any response. This was a matter highlighted by The Leader in March, after we got unofficial advice of the withdrawal of the Orihuela Costa emergency ambulance, which we then followed up in

June, when the announcement to slash public ambulance services even further was discovered. Numerous experts warned then of the potentially life threatening situation that the time bomb of cuts was creating, even highlighting how, “response times are increased by both distance and the potential complexity of access”, as the health secretary for the PSPV-PSOE in the province of Alicante, Miguel Mauri, denounced “the reduction in hours of ambulance service”, which, he said, will motivate “extended delays”, which, in his view, “means the difference between life and death.

CONVICTED MAYOR TO LOSE WEAPONS LICENSE It was revealed this week that two weeks after the Supreme Court confirmed the validity of the three year prison sentence handed down to the former mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernández Mateo, the Guardia Civil have wrote to the courts to request the revoking of his firearms and weapons license. Sentenced to three years in prison in 2012 for rigging a 100 million euro contract, Hernández Mateo used the appeals process to challenge his conviction, a challenge which failed, although he still remains free whilst a clemency request is considered. The document requesting the revocation was dated the 5th of November, requesting the withdrawal of the rights under the “Type E” weapons license held by Hernández Mateo, which qualified him to have up to 12 weapons in his possession, including the likes of hunting rifles, shotguns, compressed air and gas powered guns, machetes and knives. The licenses are granted for a periods of 5 years, although, in

the case of those over 60, they should be certified every 2 years, as would be the case here. The former mayor is waiting for the courts to meet to resolve his request for the suspension of his prison sentence, after nearly 2,500 signatories joined the petition for clemency, whereas, currently, almost 4,500 individuals have signed to indicate their desire to see him serve the prison term.

MAJOR DRUG HAUL IN ALICANTE The Guardia Civil have broken up a South American smuggling ring operating in Alicante and Valencia, which has been bringing drugs into Spain as well as a number of other European countries. A total of 43 arrests have so far been made, 14 in Alicante and Valencia, where more than 62 kgs of cocaine has been seized together with 1.2 million fake US dollars. Have said that the cocaine entered Spain by a number of different methods: using people as "mules", concealed in shipping containers, hidden in planes or even by the postal services. Those arrested include suspects from Spain, Columbia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Romania, Morocco, Argentina, Peru and one American The investigation got underway in October 2012, when officers began their investigation into the movements of a number of people of Colombian origin who were living in Alicante, Guadalajara and Madrid. The police believed that they were engaged in smuggling large quantities of cocaine into the country from South America. Although the main route of the drug was into Spain, the group is understood to have been operating in a number of other European countries simultaneously, information that was shared by the Guardia Civil and a number of other European police forces. The gang leaders, living in Colombia, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Peru and Ecuador, were responsible for obtaining the drug, and then arranging it’s movement into to Spain. On payment the "mules" travelled from Spain to South America from where they returned with the drugs concealed hidden in bags and suitcases or impregnated in their clothing. The payments were

often made in counterfeit U.S. dollars. The profits from the activities were sent to Colombia by money transfer, using the identities of Colombian nationals, known as “smurfs”, many without their knowledge. One of the main organisers, who is now in police custody, was previously linked to the murder and dismemberment of two Colombian nationals in Argentina in 2008. Within Spain the Guardia have made 14 house searches in the provinces of Alicante, Murcia, Badajoz, Madrid, Guadalajara, Toledo, Zaragoza, Valencia, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In the process they have seized more than 62 kilograms of cocaine, 32,000 euros in cash, more than 1.2 million U.S. dollars in counterfeit paper currency, bearer cheques with a total value of 175,533 euros, two firearms with ammunition, as well as counterfeit identification documents and passports.

VALENCIA FORMULA 1 UNDER THE MICROSCOPE etails have come to light this week that reveal how hosting the Formula 1 racing in Valencia will cost the regional government 300 million euro in five years, which has added to the upset of those workers of the now closed Ràdio Televisió Valenciana (RTVV) televiosion channel, as the figure is the equivalent that would have secured their positions of work for four years.

D

The EUPV has published a copy of the contract on their website, as they feel it is of great importance to show how business was conducted under the PP regional team. The tens of thousands of people who have downloaded the document seem to agree with transparency too. A purpose built race circuit was created on the public streets, which would allow the roads to be quickly converted from their day to day operation to a circuit which hosts the racing cars. This 90 million euro cost was considered something of a waste considering that there is already a racetrack at Cheste, just a few kilometres away. On the plus side, there were some 75 people employed for the purpose of assembling the elements on the city streets, their wages paid for the 5 year period adding to the overall cost though, and then add to those costs the 115 million euro apparently given to Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, tax free, the overall amount is estimated at 300 million euro of public money. Along with the immediate financial implications detailed above, the contract was also clearly aimed at ensuring the sport providers were protected, although that protection would be at the expense of the public accounts, as the contract, originally signed in 2007, required the Generalitat to assume all losses. Ignacio Blanco says that Francisco Camps used the contracted company Valmor as a “front” for the payment of fees for the Formula 1 events, and set up a triangular netwok of businesses where the only loss would be to the public purse, with those running the event never losing out. “The government of (Francisco) Camps is responsible for contracts with Ecclestone and Valmor, and the government of (Alberto) Fabra bought the Valmor company assuming all debts, so both are responsible for the ruinous business F1 has been for Valencia”, concluded Blanco.

The sporting event was held in Valencia, at the Palau de la Generalitat, under an agreement by the former regional President, Francisco Camps. The contract was from 2008 to 2012, but it was cancelled last year due to the financial situation. Spokesperson for the EUPV, Ignacio Blanco, said that “After six years it was time that Valencia knew the content of this controversial contract that has been hidden by the PP Although their success through the sumand were lucrative contracts signed mer was clear, the latest batch of touristic year after year”, continuing to state guided walks through Orihuela have that the agreement is a “symbol of exceeded all forecasts, with the first walk an era of waste, big events, which was launched for this weekend Pharaonic projects that we all pay oversubscribed, leaving 125 people unable for, and the opacity that have disto attend. tinguished the PP governments, especially under the baton of This information has been released by the councillor for tourism, Rosa Martínez, who says that a Camps”.

ORIHUELA TOURS A HIT WITH PUBLIC total of 153 people registered to attend the “Sweet Steps” tour, visiting traditional sweet factories, including a convent where the nuns hold a vow of silence, but with only 28 places available, the councillor is now trying to create more options for those left disappointed. Other routes Will include the traditional Christmas belén and even a guided tour of the Orihuela Costa. Info is available from the town hall.

POLICE PROTEST IN TORREVIEJA Around 30 officers from Torrevieja´s Local Police force protested outside the town hall this week, owning to what they have called a “breach of the agreement reached” by the government team of their working rotas agreed some 5 months ago. The spokesperson for the group, supported by the CCOO union, José Joaquín Lucas, explained that agreements on training has also been ignored and the officers feel that their working rights and conditions are being severely affected by a “lack of respect”. They do recognise that there had been some improvement following the removal of the previous councillor for the police, but they also say that “the bottom line is the same”. The operating hours and working conditions have been under discussion for some time, with recent reported problems resulting in times with no police cover on the streets at all, extended shifts, holiday and sickness vacancies in disarray and a general mismanagement of the service. The officers are calling for further dialogue in order for agreements to be both reached and then adhered to.

HIGH SKATES FOR COSTA As part of their third anniversary celebrations, the CDM sports centre on the Orihuela Costa has been holding a variety of event this week, and on Friday, the grounds were turned into something unique for the coast, a purpose built skate park. Councillor for the coast, Martina Scheurer, told The Leader that she attended the event with some interest, saying, “I have paid especial attention to the skating as I would like to install a small skating area on the Orihuela Costa”. Recognising the importance of the younger generation, Scheurer continued, “Something has to be done as well for our youngsters, not only for the very small ones, but the elder ones as well”.

feel like whatever they tried to do, they would fail, although as the majority group in parliament, their votes could always win any notion, either in support or objection. Despite this, the government team still manage to continue to govern, although through a “manipulation of the law”, according to Houliston, still in a legal capacity. This week, another discreet step towards the future was taken, as Bob Houliston announced that his CLARO party would be standing in the next elections as an independent group, publicly severing the alliance in the future. As for the PP, although they say they have learnt their lessons, the proverbial proof of the pudding is in the eating, with many of the voters still supporting them as a group, there are also many who feel that their previous neglectful attitude is so endemic, they would never change. The obvious questions being what they have done for the

Since then, Bob Houliston, the CLARO head, has maintained a stance that the errors of the PP that cost them the last election, namely the neglect of the coastal zone, had been both a wakeup call to the group, and served as lessons that they have learnt and intend to rectify. For that reason, Houliston effectively became their additional member, supporting their decisions all the way. But the obvious question is how far? When the switch towards supporting the PP was first made, the credibility of Houliston suffered a tremendous blow, with many then believing he had sold out, and that he had contested his seat in government based on a lie, as he was particularly vocal about his opposition to the PP, with many not understanding how or why that might have changed. Similarly, Houliston´s alliance with Pedro Mancebo and his CLR party was short lived after the elections, when, despite them joining forces to take their place on the elected bench, internal differences soon became too much. Since the time that CLARO signed their pact with the PP, they fully intended to overthrow the government and take over, but with every attempt failing, with even their own party having to regroup and back down after the regional PP failed to support the bid for former mayor, Mónica Lorente, to lead the party into a censure motion. It started to

coast during this current period in opposition, whilst holding that majority power. A recently highlighted question has come about over the insistence of the PP to push for 1,350,000 euro from the sale of public land on the coast be spent finishing a Civic Centre in the small inland village of La Aparecida, home to around 2,500 residents. At the same time, Bob Houliston is insisting that his party, with an agreement with the PP,

LEADER

want to build a multi-purpose auditorium on the coast. Although both these projects may be exciting developments for the future, the question of priorities is an obvious one, especially why the PP are seemingly pushing so hard for work in a village where just over 2% of the population live, rather than the coastal project where well over 30% reside. That question was put to Bob Houliston by Mark Nolan on Exite Radio this week, to which the surprise reply was simply, “That one tiny village is where the councillor Mr Aniote lives”, José Aniote being the former councillor for the coast under the PP government. These things collectively could show how the allegiance seemingly didn´t actually work, nor will it ever be a viable option for the benefit and the excitement surrounding the initial amalgamation, that of ensuring the interests of the Orihuela Costa. This opinion of future confusion is also conveyed in a press release from the CLR supporters group, they accuse CLARO of a “missed opportunity” during their annual general meeting held last week, by criticising the inner structure of their once aligned group, “As usual there was no opportunity for the rank and file to select and vote for individuals from within the party. No individuals were nominated or seconded, no choices were given, there was the usual “take it or leave it” attitude from their president who presented the same executive committee as last year to the members. He chose the executive himself and then required the party faithful to re-elect the committee en masse, which like last year, they did”. The CLR Supporters Group continue, “Mr. Houliston promised in 2011 that he would not seek re-election in 2015 because he would be 78 years of age by then, so surely this AGM would have been the perfect time to install a new CLARO president”. Indeed we also know of another high profile member who made the decision to dedicate her previously charitable life to politics, Nora Bond, previously from Help at Home, but her voice also seemingly now quieter than when she first made the statement of her political future. It remains abundantly clear at the moment that the residing government team are here to stay, it is also clear that the team in office are carrying on with their joint manifestoes with the same vigour and conviction in which they started. As for what all of this means in the future, well that is entirely up to the people who choose to elect them, assuming you are eligible and registered to vote. If the PP have proven the errors of their ways, they may just gain enough support to win the next election. The similar could also be said of the two groups still working together in government, the PSOE and Los Verdes. If the actions of the bipartite are proven of benefit to the voters, then those voters may well offer the same support as before. Should a similar situation arise of forming another coalition, only time will tell as to whether that option becomes viable once more, or if either the socialists or greens have gained enough support to win outright. But of the smaller groups, CLARO and CLR, whilst both still offer an alternative, the question of the likelihood that they can gain enough support to gain a seat is in clear doubt, but with time to build and boost their profiles, the floor remains open for what is undoubtedly going to be the most hotly contested election in the history of the municipality, once voting day arrives in 2015.

CRACKS AND ALLEGIANCES IN THE ORIHUELA POLITICAL FIELD

lthough it may seem like a lifetime away, the issue of locally elected councils is still a hot topic, as the time to choose one´s representative will be here sooner than we might think. In Orihuela, the government team has been persistently rocked since day one of this administration, with a three or four party coalition becoming decimated to two groups, operating in minority government of 9 councillors, as internal differences and battles saw casualty after casualty, although, despite that, the inner core remaining stable throughout, under the management of the mayor, Montseratte Guillén. The latest departure of a high profile PSOE councillor may not have rocked the ship this time, the same couldn´t be said when CLARO councillor Bob Houliston resigned from his post, siding with his previous arch enemies, the Partido Popular.

he councillor for urban planning, Antonio Zapata, has announced that the consultation period granted over the controversial reclamation of public land at the Bella Vista urbanisation has now closed. The town hall had begun legal proceedings to claim back the public land that a number of home owners had extended their gardens onto, thus closing a public walkway. Those property owners illegally occupying the land now have one final course of action, to file an appeal with the courts, or the town hall will be able to begin the physical destruction of their properties in order to reopen the route to the public. The Councillor for the Coast, Martina Scheurer, has confirmed this week that the new “Reading Point” on the Orihuela Costa will open as promised on the 13th of December, with a special event welcoming visitors to have a look around and get to know the venue located on Calle Cipres, near to the Aldi supermarket. After the inauguration, the initial opening hours are likely to be from 14:00 to 19:00 on Tuesday and Thursday, which the town hall hope may be extendable in the future, but they are still keen to add to their volunteer pool to enable the community based feature to succeed and grow.

ice rink which is currently on the site, and will open on the 20th of December, until the 23rd. The town hall has also said that in addition to the market stalls, a variety of entertainment elements and activities for children will also be provided. The Orihuela Costa infrastructure has become the victim of vandalism to waste collection bins, with a total of 19 containers destroyed by fire this year so far, and another 3 going “missing in action”. It is believed that the fires have all been started deliberately, the latest attack only this week, which is the fifth such burning incident since the start of November. Apart from the safety concerns that this action holds, there is also a social inconvenience as the bins are no available, and financial implications as the town hall will have to spend more public money on replacing the units. The Councillor for Tourism, Rosa Martínez, this week announced that her department has been busy creating another tourist guide book for the historic city, municipality and coast, the difference with this one being that it is specifically designed for children. Available in both Spanish and English, the guide aims to provide a source of learning for young people, aimed at those of around 10 years of age, through various games and activities, as well as resources of information, which are also “a teaching tool”, according to the councillor, to enrich the visits of the younger generation. Railway infrastructure company ADIF announced the opening this week of the road that runs under the railway line at the CV-95 route into and out of Orihuela. The road had been closed to traffic as part of the high speed train work being carried out on the lines overhead. Work will still continue in the area, so only one lane in each direction is available initially, but this will be a welcome relief to one of the main arterial routes of Orihuela.

The coastal department has also confirmed that a Christmas gifts and craft market will be held on the Orihuela Costa, situated on the car park alongside the Zenia Boulevard shopping centre, adjacent to the

er studies are also available, all starting in January, but registration is now open, with more information, as always, available from the town hall.

The councillor for youth in Orihuela, Carolina Gracia, has announced a new series of courses aimed at providing young unemployed people with additional tools to provide further opportunities to find work, with languages and computers leading the way in the opportunities. Courses in English, Chinese and Russian are amongst those available, as well as a course in sign language. Web design and general comput-

The Orihuela Government team has approved the payment of 3,882 euro for the life insurance policy of 137 workers who operate collecting solid waste. In addition 20,700 euro has been approved for the Senior Centre of Virgen de Monserrate, 15,380 euro for the complete replacement of lighting in the La Florida urbanisation of the coast and 9,000 euro towards the municipal Animal Protection Centre. The government has also approved the allocation of 10,884 euro for social welfare, from which 50 struggling individuals will benefit, as well as other payments such as nursery vouchers and other aid requests. Councillor for sports, Luis Galiano, and the director of Quirón Grupo Hospitalario, Dr Rafael Jiménez, have announced that this hospital will conduct 500 medical examinations on children enrolled in the municipal sports school, which is around 80 more than last year, the first year that the hospital took responsibility. The hospital will also provide a variety of medical equipment as part of the collaboration, which Dr. Jimenez says brings the institutions and citizens as “close together” as they can be.

LEARNING THE LINGO PART 3 The issues of learning the language are clearly different for younger residents. Children are immersed in Spanish when attending state schools. Although often there is little or no recognition that Spanish needs to be taught as a foreign language to ensure that new immigrant learners are able to really participate in the learning and school environment. Many newly arrived youngsters are placed in a classroom and spoken at in a language they have absolutely no comprehension of without any attempt to teach them even the basic rudiments of the language. Many children waste substantial parts of their school years because they were never introduced to the language before being placed in a classroom where a sink or swim philosophy is employed. This poor teaching experience has resulted in many expat children failing to reach their educational potential and leaving school with no qualifications and a high degree of dissatisfaction. Language is not learnt by osmosis, we don’t pick it up though our senses, it needs to be taught and taught effectively. Any person who is engaged in either education or employment should make the effort to learn the language. Their life styles and needs will bring them into contact with Spanish people much more frequently than their retired, expat counterparts. Further, for these individuals their learning ability should be greater than their aged, expat neighbours. Any parent with children at school will need the language to discuss their child’s progress with teachers and also to enrol their children in available extracurricular activities. Parents of school age children will have far more opportunities to practice their language skills than many retired expats have, they can chat with Spanish parents at the school gates or even with their child’s Spanish friends. Employment opportunities are greatly improved if an individual is bi-lingual. The majority of businesses at Zenia Boulevard are Spanish owned, however the overwhelming numbers of customers come from the expat community or are tourists, many visiting from outside Spain. Workers need the ability to communicate effectively with their employers and to operate within a Spanish company but the ability to communicate well with customers is also vital. All types of employment opportunities are considerably widened if one is proficient in the Spanish language; someone with good office and administration skills who is also bi-lingual has considerable advantages over someone who speaks just Spanish, especially here along Orihuela Costa. Where on Orihuela Costa are the language classes addressing the needs of work aged immigrants? It is abundantly evident that a population that is 80% non Spanish need considerable help learning the language in order to participate fully in life in Spain. People who hope to enter the employment market need a far

95% unused Adult Education College more rigorous language course than individuals who only deal with Spanish bureaucracy. Language courses are required at all levels and these by right should be provided by the Orihuela councillors who are keen to collect our local taxes and spend them on grandiose projects n Orihuela and the small villages. The Orihuela Costa adult education college sits empty for 95% of the week whilst money is squandered on expensive cultural events that are frequently staged in Orihuela. Orihuela Costa will continue to be discriminated against until it returns a sufficient number of elected councillors who actually live on the coast, who really know the area and the needs of its multi-cultural population and who will advocate for the benefit all sectors of the coastal community. This will only happen if residents ensure they are registered to vote in local elections and use their vote on polling day.

RIOJA CHARITY FUN DAY A ROARING SUCCESS ver 300 people turned up at the Rioja Centre on a bright and sunny Saturday 23rd November with two things in mind - to have a good time and to raise money for some local good causes.

O

And everyone concerned agreed that both objectives were achieved in good measure. With a stunning array of local stars - Celine Deanes, Dan Davy, Nick Gold and Paul Michael to name but a few - the masses were royally entertained throughout the day, while eight different charities had stalls, selling new and second hand goods, some Christmas items and, of course, enticing the public into entering tombolas and raffles. In all 1992,29€ was raised with 827,90€ going to the main charity of the day - the AECC with all their efforts organised by Maria and her Pink Ladies. Maria was on hand to open and close the day with rousing speeches urging everyone to dig deep - which they quite obviously did. Special thanks must go to the many volunteers who turned up on the day to man the stalls and to help raise the cash - without these dedicated people charities simply would not exist. The organisers at cc Rioja are now planning their next event and hope to run two or even three similar ones next year - so look out for details.

MORE AIRBORNE SPEED CHECKS FOR CHRISTMAS It was in March that the first ever airborne speed detection system became operational, the infamous Pegasus. Since which time the helicopter based system has caught many a motorist off guard, capable of snapping speeding vehicles up to a kilometre away. Initially, the DGT traffic department installed Pegasus on just 1 of their 19 helicopters, with a super powerful zoom, that can target and photograph vehicles travelling at any speed up to 360 kilometres per hour. Now, with an investment of over a million euro, there will be more eyes in the sky in time for Christmas. Another 4 helicopters will now be fitted with radar cameras capable of measuring vehicle speeds from the air, at a cost of around 640,000 euro, as well as also acquiring an MX15 radar camera, at a cost of just over EUR 605,000. These new devices will be in the air in time for one of the biggest road movement operations outside of summer, the Christmas and New Year period. The DGT say that they intend to use the aircraft during these special operations, when they will monitor sections with high accident rates in particular. The effectiveness of Pegasus was proven in the first active weekend of launch, when, for a 24 hour in-air period during Easter, 522 vehicles were monitored from the air, 16% of which were caught speeding, the average ratio for roadside tests normally yields just 3.49% of speeders, making Pegasus 5 times more effective. In addition, the number of vehicles monitored was also much higher than is possible from the ground.

CHRISTMAS DECORATION COMPETITION Dear Friends and Neighbours of Doña Pepa; As you all know, every year we hold a Christmas decoration competition and my company usually presents the winner with a voucher for 100€ to spend in a garden centre. This year is different: I would like to be able to help those who ..due to the economic crisis or because of a disability.........are less well off than ourselves. It is the time of year when we ought to be more sensitive to those who have nothing than to what we may need.....Christmas is coming and many people are not able to put a plate of hot food on the table. Last Thursday I attended the meeting of the Almoradi Rotary Club and they are organising an event at the Cortés Theatre in Almoradi for children. It will be a charity show, educational and full of values. the entrance costs only 5€ per person and this money will be destined for the "Food Bank" that in turn will distribute it through associations that reach out to those without resources. The aim is ensure that all the families in our community, our province, have something to eat on those days so special as Christmas. But further-

more, I have arranged with the Rotary Club of Almoradí to distribute 5€ to each handicapped child of the "ADA" association. In this way disadvantaged children can enjoy the fantastic piece of theatre and in turn the money will go to the Food Bank in order to help not once but twice.....I, Francisco Lidón, will donate on behalf of my company Lidón and Associates 100€ and I do hope that all of you can also contribute so that everyone can eat this Christmastime. The show will be on the 13th December at 7pm in the Cortés Theatre in Almoradí and is called "Violeta and Pantagruel" by he company Jácara Teatro. If you would like to go you can reserve your tickets at the theatre itself. At my office Lidón and Associates, next to the Lizarrán Tapas Bar you can leave your donations to be paid to enable the handicapped children to have an unforgettable day and then that money will also go to make sure that nobody goes without a meal this Christmas. Between us all we can help. Please think of them............Thank yooouuuu.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ By Bar rie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

The Expat Voice So what do you think about democracy and your right to vote? Sorry, but I can see you yawning already, but that cross in the box is important and many have struggled for years, and continue to give their lives, for the right to put a cross on the ballot paper every four or five years. I was chatting to George the other day. Regular ‘Twitter’ readers will be familiar with my friend, George. Without doubt, he is the most boring and irritating friend that I know; he finds fault with everything and everyone. However, I continue to have dinner with him from time to time, as I find that he stimulates my argumentative juices and his distorted view of the expat world can be refreshing, and occasionally illuminating. We were on the subject of voting in the forthcoming European elections. “I don’t bother to vote any more,” George announced as he was shoving a large piece of steak into his mouth. “There’s no point, and it never makes any difference.” I sighed. I toyed with the vegetarian lasagne on my plate, determined not to let George rile me so early in the evening. He was not a bad man, but he really was not an asset as an expat, and would be far better moving back to Preston, where he could get all the Brit sausages, pork pies and bacon that he loved so much. “Don’t you think it is your democratic duty, George? After all, the right to vote has cost many people their lives and much suffering in the past. You have only to think of Emily Pankhurst...” My earnest words fell on deaf ears and I let George continue with his anti-democratic protestations. I was wasting my breath. My mind wandered to a recent news report about a 93-year-old British Expat,

Harry Schindler, who is living in Italy. He recently took the British Government to court for not allowing him to vote in British elections, even though he has been living in Italy for the last 30 years. He has been battling in the courts for the right to have his vote restored for the last 12 years. I do not share Harry’s views. Personally, I could not get out of the UK quick enough to start my new life in Spain, and continuing to vote in UK elections was the last thing on my mind at the time. I did, however, exercise my right to vote in both local and General Elections in the UK for about four years after I had left. Even though all expats are entitled to vote for 15 years after they have left the UK, I felt that I had no right to vote after I had left the country. Over time, I have become increasingly unaware of many British issues, and I have to confess that when I do return occasionally to the UK, I feel like a visitor returning to a foreign country. I know that many expats will disagree with me. Certainly, many expats intend to return to the UK in time, whilst others will comment that British Government policy has a direct impact upon their family, pensions and finances, even though they are no longer living in the

country, and therefore they have a right to vote. I respect their views, but would much prefer that I have full voting rights in my adopted country, Spain and the Canary Islands. As it stands, I am entitled to vote in the European elections, as well as municipal elections in the Canary Islands. However, I have no right to vote in Spanish national or in the regional Canarian Government elections, as I am not a Spanish citizen. However, my home is in the Canary Islands, and I pay my share of local and national Spanish taxes, so being deprived of a vote seems just a little unreasonable, particularly after living in Spain for a lengthy period of time. Back to the Harry Schinder story. The courts threw out Harry’s claim that was aimed to change a British law that says that expats can no longer vote in the country after living abroad for more than fifteen years. Schindler has not taken out Italian citizenship, which means that he too cannot participate in the country’s elections. Harry is determined to fight on and intends to take the matter to the European Court of Human Rights, because he believes that British law breaches the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states everyone has the right to participate in the government of their country. To me, this is precisely the point. I really would like the opportunity to vote in the government of the country where I live, work and pay taxes, but do not share Harry’s wish of being able to vote in the elections of a country that I am no longer part of. Does it matter? Well, without labouring the point too heavily, I believe that it does. Most expats contribute greatly to the local economy, as well as the society that they have become part of. Surely an appropriate gesture would be recognition that, after a period of time, we can use our democratic voices in our adopted countries. “Yes, George. I know that that Farage fellow enjoys a drink and a smoke, but personally, I really would rather not have dinner with him.” At this point, I remembered my mother’s wise words of never to talk about religion, politics, sex or vegetarianism at the dinner table. “How about a nice dessert, George?” If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites: www.barriemahoney.com and www.thecanaryislander. com or read his latest book, ‘’Expat Survival’ (ISBN: 978 147 913 0481) © Barrie Mahoney

EXCLUSIVE TREATMENT OF FUNGAL NAIL INFECTION

What to do with Fungal nail infection! Here is the innovation from the USA exlusive with Dr. Raik Wagner. What is fungal nail infection? This condition is also known as onychomycosis,

and often occurs as a result of nail trauma, be it through a single blow or through repetitive trauma such as running, high heels or restrictive footwear. This common condition is caused by dermatophytes/spores getting into the nail, upon which it feeds, leading to discolouration and thickening of

the nail plate. The nails are often difficult to cut and unsightly. If the onychomycosis is not treated quickly or efficiently the nail bed may become permanently damaged and the infection may spread to other toenails. Infection is unusual in children but as one gets older the chance of catching a fungal nail infection increases. The statistics are: Between 40 to 60 years old 15% of the population will acquire it. Between 60 to 70 years old over 30%. Over 70 years old there is about 50% infection rate Also people with low immunity, diabetes and HIV are more at risk of catching onychomycosis Fungal nail infection treatment To treat onychomycosis using the state of the art Fotona Nd:YAG Laser. The treatment involves passing laser light over the infected nails and surrounding tissue safely killing the parasitic fungi. The procedure painlessly heats the nail plate imperceptibly at first but feels warmer towards the end of each nail treatment. No anaesthesia is required for this procedure and your daily routine will remain unaffected. It provides the most patient-friendly and least-invasive onychomycosis treatment. Laser light also eliminates monotonous applications of often ineffective topical anti-fungal paints and lacquers, and also negates the taking of prescribed oral anti-fungal medication and attendant possible systemic side-effects such as liver and kidney damage. Fungal nail infection - posttreatment Toenail growth is slow (approximately 1mm per month, compared to fingernails which grow three times more quickly) and therefore it will be several months before any improvement is seen. A follow-up appointment will be required 4-6 months after the final treatment and progress will be monitored by photographic comparison.

Fungal nail infection - after care treatment In order to prevent reinfection it is important to adhere diligently to a prophylactic regime of antifungal treatment. Nail infection is secondary to toecleft disease, and therefore any evidence of interdigital infection must be dealt with quickly and efficiently. Antifungal foot creams must be applied to the skin as per instruction, and a light dusting of antifungal foot powder can be applied to footwear, hosiery and skin. The advantage of Laser therapy: It is safety and painless No anesthetic necessary No side effects, and cheaper then using over lots of years special nail vanish or tablets No wounds on the nail or the skin around the laser only goes directly into the nail It’s been recommended to wash your socks with Sagrotan and to disinfect your shoes and shower with Sagrotan as well. For more information please make your appointment with Dr. Wagner on 965 326 688.

180s: Joe Miller, Shaun Smith (Hyenas), Derek Kingsbury, Patrick Abrams, Paul Durrant (Meerkats), Sid Cross x2 (Hattons Hunks), Mark Filer (Busters), Mike Smith (Breakaways Bears) Highest finish: Alex Nikolov (Meerkats) 141 The anticipated live KO Cup draw at Exite Radio didn’t materialise as expected due to inclement weather affecting radio antennae. So it was down to Hattons bar, accompanied by the larger than life Sid Cross to conduct the draw as it appears at the foot of this column. The Hunk did an outstanding job in ensuring one of the top three will not be in the semi-final draw. Que Pasa entertain cup holders Hub Meerkats who haven’t lost a cup tie in four seasons. Ironically both sides meet each other the following week in a league match. Would both captains take a win apiece, I doubt it, should be very interesting and will a different name appear on the cup next May? Back to this week´s hot league news and guess what, the Pirates of PB´s have won their first match at the expense of the Pint Depot Queens, who now find themselves bottom of the pile. It was a very close affair, down to the last leg in fact, featuring Rachael Broadhead throwing first against Pirate Brian Mears. Both players found themselves on the double, but it was the Pirate who claimed D2 and the match for the visitors. The Lanes, Michelle and John had done most of the earlier damage for the Pirates, bagging two doubles each. The Kirbys, Terry and Gilly claiming one a piece. The hosts were 0-4 down after Michelle Lane had notched D16 initially requiring 56 for a nice little out. The tide turned in the 5th, Queen Marie Dunne hitting D8 apparently celebrating with an Irish expletive. The female

Lane made it 1-5 on D12 at half time, which gave the Royals the opportunity to re-group and plan their comeback. It didn’t work out that way as they went further behind via John Lane´s 140 and D18, which ensured at least the Pirates first point. Dunne, with the throw, had the task of facing an in-form Michelle Lane in the next. Some great scores followed by both as did the Irish expletives as Dunne this time pegged out on D11. A further 3 legs went the Royals way, Lorraine Cox D2, Vi Turner 107,D9 and Cheryl Sleath D1 to make the score 5-6, with it all to play for. It was left to Mears to gain the last leg, match and both points for the jubilant Pirates. Table toppers Meerkats journeyed down to La Zenia´s cosy Gogarty´s bar knowing their hosts had won their previous three league matches. The Kats got away to a flyer, Pat Abrams 2x100 and John Eyre 100, just edging out Kevin Procktor´s 100 and Ernie Wilson´s 95. Graham Todd made it 0-1 on D8. Much the same in the second Abrams scoring 2 tons, Alex Nikolov hitting S10,D16, after John Linton came back at the Kats with 85 and 81. Lee Maiden D12 made it 0-3. Abrams was at it again in the first pairs joining captain Derek Kingsbury. A ton followed by a 118 to set up D12 was missed by Kingsbury, leaving his partner to polish off the 24 points in one dart. Paul Durrant 140,D5 made it 0-5. In the next Nikolov 121 and 97 to leave 38 pegging out next throw with opponent Linton sitting on a shot after hitting a ton, 0-6. The visitors now fully fed during the break had the outstanding Abrams on first expecting to wrap up both points after one singles. Linton had his own ideas and with both players registering a ton the Gopher reversed the trend hitting D20. Captain Gail Todd was next to line up to Durrant for the Kats. Some inconsistent scoring from the Gophers skipper enabled her opponent to get to D20 first after 2x100 and take the opportunity first dart. A high scoring third single featuring Steve Woods and John Eyre necessitated the latter to finish a little flamboyantly using three darts S4,T18,bull for a 108 out. Gerard McGranaghan´s 133 wasn’t enough to unsettle Nikolov who needed two darts to finish 53 (S13,D20). Kevin Procktor 100 gained the Gophers second leg playing Todd 95, Procktor finally nailing D1. Kingsbury made it 2-10 on D5. Gophers current star Cynthia Jevons, despite being present, was unable to play due to a shoulder injury, mirroring the keep fit injury sustained by Misfit Sonya Cooper. Delving a little further I found the injury was due not to keep fit, but to undressing for bed. Needless to say with so many ears present she now has many willing volunteers on hand. Que Pasa flexed their muscles against the Pint Depot Kings in preparation for the next two matches. The game was in fact a lot closer than the score suggests. A decent tally of 23 tons was scored on the evening but surprisingly the Kings gained the majority, 12, indicating that finishing was the difference between the two. The Kings will certainly be a handful for Hattons Hunks in the cup next week particularly as they are at home. John Walker D16 opened the scoring for Que Pasa, Ian Sleath 128,D18 levelling for the Kings, supported by some consistent scoring from Frankie Wurrorck including a 119. Eddie Klimonis polished off a 100 game shot in the third, despite some heavy scoring from Gary Minor 140 and Matt Cummins 118. Eddie Fozzard and Dave

Wright faced Klimonis and Jim Waddell in the first doubles, the latter hitting D20 for the leg. Walker made it 4-1 on D16. Minor D1 and Sleath reduced the deficit at half time. Klimonis D10 edged out Wright in the first single, Kevin Griffiths D10 pulling one back for the hosts. The Eagles reeled off the remaining four singles, Waddell D8 winning the match for Que Pasa. Minor had a great evening scoring 2x100,140 as did Fozzard 140,125,100. The home side´s Walker made a significant contribution with 3x100,125,130 and 140, Klimonis adding 100,135. Porterhouse continue their winning ways after their trip to the Hunks of Hattons. Some fine throwing from Porter Ray Hayes 100,121 contributed to the 32 points remaining for Sue Sanderson to hit the double 16. Hunk Steph Simpson 121 and the double levelled for the hosts, Peter Ayres recording a 116 in the same leg. Brian Nash and Ray Sanderson recorded tons in the next to leave Nash 60 which was duly finished in three darts. Consecutive 97s from Ayres in the first doubles gave partner Hayes the opportunity to finish D4, even though Jake Hawkins had recorded a ton. A 140 from captain Sanderson and a ton from Yvonne Rouffignac wasn’t quite enough as Sid Cross 132 set up Joe Hawkins D2 for the leg. Nash D7 made it 2-4 at the break for the visitors. Hayes had the throw against Jake Hawkins after the interval and hit 3x100 and D8 to increase the Porters lead. Simpson D9 saw off the challenge from Rouffignac, only for Nash 140 and D6 to beat Cross and ensure the draw and the point. Rob Hawkins D10 reduced the score line only for Ayres to find the all important double to take the match. Keith King 140,100 and eventually D1 took the 12th leg for Hattons and a 5-7 result. Ray Hayes was deemed man of the match. The Honeys gave a spirited performance when they visited Busters. The De Laceys top scored for Hattons with Phil scoring 116,100 and wife Simone hitting 121. It wasn’t enough however, as Paul Dowinton 3x100, Peter O´Rourke 100,115,120 and Julie Hallett 131,133 blasted the treble giving them 9 legs of the 12 available. Breakaways move two places in the right direction after a comfortable home win versus Madigans. The Celts Club de Golf. Our November open at La Serena was played in challenging conditions. The course was excellent and the greens very fast. Not only did we have to cope with the subtle slopes but the wind was blowing so hard that it too had to be taken into account on all putts. We only had one player breaking standard scratch, an indication of the difficulties that we had to cope with. The nearest the pin winners were, Brian Toal, Eddie Wall, Wim Schmitz, Denis McCormack and John O'Brien. Unfortunately nobody managed to reach the eight green in two to claim that prize, something down to the wind. We had two categories today and the prize winners were, Category two, third, Adrian Skinner,30 pts. Second, Julian Lopez 34 pts. and the winner, Wim Schmitz with 38 points Our gross prize went to John O'Brien with 25 pts. Category one, third, Alan Woods 32 pts. Second, Geoff Ellender 34 pts. and the winner Andy Currie with 36 pts. We also presented our monthly crystal winners on the day with week one and two won by Dermot Carroll, week three, Dave Kirk and week four Logan Nayager. Our Fourball matchplay prizes were awarded to runner's up Mark McCluskey and Harry Lee. The winners were John O'Brien and Ritchie Heaton. Our club champion prize went to CVamillus Fitzpatrick winning a closely contested final, beating John O'Brien on the last hole. Congratulations to all our winners and to those who participated in our various competitions. We have our final open of the year at La Serena on the 21st of December, a team event. It is followed by our general meeting, presentation and Christmas party at Bar Rocajuna. We are always looking for new members and all levels are catered for, contact John on 615 466 398.

The Price of Success This week I had the good fortune to play with Jack Clarke who is very talented professional on the ALPS (Ecco) tour at the beautiful Font Del Llop. Jack has an impressive CV including graduating from the Faldo Academy and playing for England as an amateur with a plus 4 handicap. He is a beautiful and long striker of the golf ball with a good touch around the greens but finished only 65th on this year’s order of merit which is effectively the 3rd division of tournament professional golf. On the ALPS tour the top 'pot' for which they play is 50,000 euros with the 10th player winning 2,000 euro's but with an average cost of 400 euro's per week to play the tour it doesn't take a genius to see he will be lucky to break even at the end of the year. It just shows how good the other players are on the challenge tour and full PGA tour. The next time you see the likes of Henrik Stenson winning 20 million euros in two events spare a thoughts for talented players such a Jack just trying to survive! Leader Christmas Competition As reported last week due to overwhelming demand this years LEADER Christmas Competition to be held at Vistabella on Saturday is now FULLY BOOKED and you will find a copy of the start sheet in this weeks issue of the newspaper. WINTER LEAGUE played against Vistabella, and like all games in the Winter League, home or away, we knew it would be a good competitive game. After nine ends, three games were very close and one rink from each side looked in control of their game. This continued until the latter part of the game, and with one rink left still playing the last end to determine the outcome, which was finally clinched by Vistabella by their skips last wood. The final score was 8-4 to San Miguel. Six of the Winter League squad played a competitive friendly trips game on rink one, with the losers knowing the bar bill was at stake, the game could have gone either way with Lee Sinclairs trip just winning 15-13. Well done everyone.

HORADADA BOWLS CLUB

GREENLANDS

After being remiss last week and not getting our report in on time this report is going in early and covers two Mondays and the middle Friday. Monday 25th November gave us a home game against Monte Mar Matadors. Unfortunately our trend at home matches continued with a 95 to 115 defeat with a total of 5 points. Our points were accumulated by Marion Rosamund, Roy Collins and Ann Allen 19 – 13,John Goddard, Dave Allen and Alan Pugh 21 – 20 and Fred Semper, Alf Woodhouse and Roy Thompson who drew 20 – 20.With a bit more luck we could have won a further 2 more points as Vince Skeel, Fred Trigwell and Terry Hucknall went into the last end level with Fred trailing the jack twice only for it to go to an opponent’s wood each time. Ah well that’s bowls. On Monday 2nd December we travelled to Emerald Isle Moonrakers but only managed 4 points in a 96 to 107 defeat. Our winning rinks were Vince Skeel, Dave Allen and Barry Evans 17 – 12 and Alf Woodhouse, Roy Collins and Roy Thompson 28 – 15.Three of our other rinks gave a good account of themselves but just failed at the last hurdle. A much better report for the home game of 29th November against high flyers Vistabella Lanzadores when we gained 8 points in a 107 to 100 win. Congratulations to our winning rinks of Rose Guppy, Ann Allen and Alan Pugh 17 – 16,Yuonne Hurlock, John Simpson and John Hurlock 22 – 8 and John Wilson, Len Chance and Mick Blunt 25 – 13. We have 3 games left till the end of the year[1 on Monday and 2 on Friday] so lets make every effort to pick up as many points in the leagues as possible. We will have had our Xmas “do” by the time this goes to print so lets hope everyone enjoyed themselves and have recovered by our game on the Monday.

Sponsored by Totus and Dragon Insurance The week started well, with 2 of our 3 SABA league teams recording fine victories. In the top division, Maples ended a recent barren run, when they narrowly defeated high flying San Luis Klingons. Winning on 3 rinks, they also won on O/S by 9, to take the match 8-6. Proud of you: D Lawton, G & C Chapman 19-10. P & M Lockley, I Brewster 23-14. S Mahomet, S Hibberd, A Goodfellow 34-11. Chestnuts seem to have gone bonkers!! Without a win all season until last week, they once again recorded an emphatic victory (12-2) over close rivals, Quesada Diamonds. Get in there: J Thompson, A Butterworth, J Wray 28-9. H & C Langlois, N Cork 26-13. J McLean, J & D Webb 18-15. S Hewett, E Merrick, H Cork 1816. B Norris, D Thompson, C Dewar 22-13. Sycamores came a cropper at Vistabella against their Albatrosses, when they went down 14-0. It had to come eventually, but our winter leaguers probably didn't expect to lose their unbeaten record, by being on the receiving end of a 12-0 thumping at Monte Mar. Not all doom and gloom though, for the Berleen team of M Gray, D Watt, G Chapman & Watt, earned an 18-13 victory. Cedars team captain Dave Thompson, recently told me how he was concerned how his team had yet to win a match this season, then Wham, Bam, what's going on Dave? Congrats to all concerned, for a magnificent 14-0 triumph over La Manga Crusaders. Ce, dar can do it: J Webb, J Thompson, G Inwood 20-9. H Meston, D Thompson, J Wray 21-12. S Hewett, J Redfern, A Goodfellow 26-12. B Norris, E Thomas, D Webb 19-11. J McClean, E Merrick, C Dewar 27-12. P Wray, M Hirst, M Kilby 28-6. An overall shot deficit of only 14, denied Elms a much needed victory. Against Quesada Swallows, they won an equal number of rinks, but unfortunately lost by 6 points to 8. Well done you lot: P Lockley, J Reeves, M Edwards 16-15. D Lawton, D Watt, D Dudding 17-8. D Fryatt, G Watt, J Wilcock 17-16. Over at La Siesta, Oaks took on Blues, but it was the home side who gained maximum points. Totus and Dragon Insurance Challenge, meets Saturday at 9.30 for 10, and is open to all non members. Terry Lawton won last time out, and was closely followed by Jim Reeves (33), Jim McLean (29) & John O'Brien (26). John's partner Heather, made her contribution to the day - the wooden spoon! The Pioneer’s rounded off their pre-Christmas games with a very good win over San Luis Vulcan’s. Pat Baylis, Bernadette McDonnell and Mike Kelly 28-3, Gill and Ron Sheldon with Ivan Goodsell 29-7, George Seaman, Bert Bell and Dave Livesey 27-12 and Hilary and John Clarke with Carol Thorpe all made a major contribution to the overall shots while Shelia and Roy Millward, with Terry Baylis, and Gary Thorpe with Norman and Jean Murphy kept our losses minimal losing only by 2 and 5 respectively. The net effect was a very convincing win 10-4 and shots135-62. Well done every Pioneer. The Sputniks had a day to forget playing an afternoon game away to La Marina Pathfinders being outplayed across the board. On the up side there were a couple of close matches and some results did not compliment the competitive nature of the match. Still, to lose on all rinks and come away 0-14 losers is hard. Thanks to Mick for standing in at the 11th hour and for Ken who came off his sick bed so as not to let the team down. The Winter League 4th Dec. A trip up to Finca Guila on a sunny day and we managed to win on 2 rinks, Bernadette McDonnell, Bill Jordan, Carol Thorpe, Mike, Kelly 16-11, Carol Broomfield, Norman Murphy, Sue Jordan, Pat Harman 16-12. Points to Finca Guila 8-4 as were the shots 94-62. Thank you to Steve Pond for standing in the last minute. Chicken and Egg Winners 4th Dec. ELCHE DRAW AWAY IN COPA DEL REY VILLAREAL ..2 ELCHE CF ...2 The Copa del Rey (the King’s Cup) is the

BY JOHN Spanish equivalent of the FA Cup in MCGREGOR England, but lacks a lot of credibility here,

in that the bigger clubs use it to test out their reserves in matches they can afford to lose, in comparison to the more important bread and butter of the leagues they are in. This was most certainly the case for Elche on Friday night, providing a useful break from a difficult pre-seasonal schedule against some of the top La Liga teams. This Friday evening match at a famous Spanish venue, El Madrigal was against a top Spanish side, Villarreal, who are currently fifth, and only just behind the biggies. No 2 goalkeeper Tono started this match for the first time this season, with Suarez and Botia from the usual back four linking up with able deputies Pelegrin and Cisma. Rivera was given another start in midfield alongside Carlos Sanchez, aided by first-teamers Carles Gil, Fidel and Coro supporting Boakye up front. Villarreal were on the offensive from the start and Tono and his defence were getting plenty of practice before Giovanni scored for the home side after 22 minutes. It wasn’t all one way though, Tono’s opposite number Juan Carlos also pulled off good saves from Peligrin and Suarez, but it stayed 1 – 0 at Boakye was replaced with 10 minutes left
